KEYPORT KIWANIS FISH FRY BRINGS THE BAYSHORE TOGETHER
The Kiwanis Club of Keyport is a driving force in the community and a strong supporter of local Key Clubs and Scouts. They do local service projects and participate globally through Kiwanis International. Keyport Kiwanis members came together once more for their annual Fish Fry held at the Town and Country Inn in Keyport on February 18, 2015. Over 440 meals were served which included take-out orders. Members of the Keyport Kiwanis Club cooked the meal. Volunteers from MAST, Matawan, Keansburg, Keyport High School Key Clubs helped to serve the guests. Members of Boy Scout Troop#364 also assisted with setting up and serving. Event Chairperson Martin Ciaurro said, “The annual Fish Fry was a great success. We were concerned about the turnout with the cold weather and potential for snow, but once again had a “full house” of supporting community guests who attended. What I find to be the most exciting part of community events we sponsor, such as the Fish and Chicken Fry, is the community not only comes for a “night out”, but truly understands the meaning of what we are trying to accomplish; serving children of the world by helping in the eradication of diseases worldwide, support young adults with college scholarship aid, and sponsor many local functions that directly impact the community. Keyport Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Chicken Fry on April 13, 2015 at the Town and Country Inn in Keyport, and the Club hopes to have a great turnout as always. Make sure you check out the Keyport Kiwanis Club at www.keyportkiwanis.org for upcoming events.

A New Image for Radiology: What is Interventional Radiology? If you or a loved one become sick, understanding the world of health care and all of the procedures available for diagnosis, treatment, and recovery can sometimes feel confusing. How do you know what is best for you? How do you choose? Take comfort in knowing that patients have more options than ever when it comes to their medical care. One such area is Interventional Radiology, a specialty that offers minimally invasive options for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Using imaging tools like CT, MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray to guide them, interventional radiologists are able to successfully diagnose and treat many conditions that may have previously required more invasive surgery. David Wirtshafter, M.D., an interventional radiologist at Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital, and chairman of radiology at Bayshore, discusses a little bit about the benefits of interventional radiology procedures as well as common treatment options available to the community. “Thanks to advances in technology, many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures can now be done using minimally invasive image-guided techniques avoiding large incisions, scarring and long recovery times as a result of traditional surgery” says Dr. Wirtshafter. “Having general anesthesia is a big fear for many patients undergoing any procedure. In our procedures, general anesthesia is rarely used and many can be performed safely and painlessly using local anesthesia only. Many Interventional procedures are performed as outpatients with short recovery periods and little downtime.” At Riverview and Bayshore, the team of board certified fellowship trained interventional radiologists are skilled in techniques to address a wide spectrum of disease entities. Cancer diagnosis and therapy, vascular disease, gastrointestinal diseases and women’s health such as uterine fibroid embolization are just a few of the areas where intervenional radiologists can have a major impact on one’s health. “When a patient comes to Riverview or Bayshore for their interventional procedure they can take comfort in knowing they will be cared for by highly skilled doctors and a dedicated team of nurses and technologists focused on treating each patient’s unique situation. Our goal is to deliver the highest level of expert care quickly, effectively and most importantly, safely,” says Dr. Wirtshafter. Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Hospital have just opened new state-of-the-art vascular and interventional suites providing the newest technologies and the highest level of patient safety and comfort. To learn more about the interventional radiology suite and capabilities available at Riverview and Bayshore, please visit RiverviewMedicalCenter.com or BayshoreHospital.org, or call 800.560.9990.

Young Keyport Resident Makes
Community Service a Priority
K
eyport resident Sophia Murillo is a fifteen-yearold freshman at St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel. She loves to sing and perform on stage. A desire to improve on these two talents led her to audition for an intense theater program at the Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Musical Theatre Conservatory in Millburn, New Jersey. As one of a select group of students, she attended classes in musical theater performance, acting, dance, and improvisation. The fiveweek program ended with a concert performance by the students. Fifteen-year-old Keyport resident Sophia Murillo
Sophia chose to continue working in theater and auditioned for an All Star Program for the top youth performers in New Jersey through the Paper Mill’s Children’s Theatre on Tour Company. Theatre School Director Mickey McNany noted that the outreach program includes 10 hours of community service during which students share the gift of their talents with school children, seniors and special needs centers throughout the community. “It is my extreme pleasure to work with students like Sophia, and we feel very lucky to have her as a member of our outreach program,” said McNany. As a member of the Children’s Theatre on Tour Program, Sophia prepared for 20 weeks to perform

the stage production of Peter Pan. She played the role of Mrs. Darling, Wendy’s and the children’s mother. The theater group toured for two weeks in February during which time they visited the Livingston Library; Horizon School, which is for children with multiple and severe disabilities; and a hospital visit to the Cerebral Palsy Center in Belleville, New Jersey.
High School Musical, which will be held at St. John Vianney High School on March 12 and 15 at 8:00 p.m. “I am super excited! It is an exceptional honor as a freshman in this school to be named as the lead role in the play. I am pleased to be part of the show which has such a talented cast; and to work with the Director Mrs. Rachel Ryan, who has been a lot of fun,” shared Sophia.
Another community service Sophia provided was to the Keyport Daisy Girl Scout Troop#186. “The Girl Scout theme of the month was “Brave,” so I spoke on transitioning from an athlete, who played competitive soccer, to a singer/ actress,” said Sophia. “I spoke of the difficult roads and the work it takes, but also how I always stayed brave and determined in order to get where I am today. I sang some Disney songs for the girls, answered questions, and played piano as I taught them how to vocalize. We had a great time singing, dancing and talking. In return, they earned a Brave Petal.” Scout Leader Christine DeSimas said the girls were excited to meet Sophia, their resident star. “The girls were all quiet when she sang two beautiful songs to them. They listened as she told them her story about following her dream and made the girls believe that they can too. We were all inspired by her words and kindness as she let some of them show her their talents too. At the end of our meeting, the girls couldn’t be happier when Sophia accepted our invitation to join in our Girl Scout Shark song. We are looking forward to seeing her on stage in March.”
This talented, community-oriented teen explained why she chooses to share her talents with others. “Doing community work is a real treasure. You can never give back enough, and the excitement the children have on their faces is priceless. I especially love performing for the disabled, because of the thrill the kids get, but also because of the assurance that the parents get knowing someone cares about their children. I take these occasions as life lessons and it motivates me to do better and give more. When I reflect on this, I think anyone at any time can be in the same shoes and we should never judge someone for something that is beyond their control. Bringing hope to someone is the best medicine you can provide.”
Sophia has been named the lead role of Gabriella Montez in Disney’s ABOVE: Sophia with Keyport Daisy Girl Scout Troop#186 where she was invited to sing and speak with the scouts about being brave and pursuing their dreams.

Mom, This One’s for You… A fter all you’ve done for your children and family, after all the sleepless nights and endless stress it’s time for you take time out for yourself. To get YOU back. Mommy-makeovers refer to a host of different procedures that can help give you back your pre-maternity jeans bod. Board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Said A. Samra, Dr. Asaad H. Samra, Dr. Munjal P. Patel and Dr. Salem Samra comprise Samra Plastic Surgery with offices in Holmdel and Old Bridge. Our plastic surgeons very commonly see women coming in requesting things to be nipped and tucked to turn back the hands of time and undo the havoc of pregnancy. Among the popular procedures for these women, are tummy-tuck (or abdominoplasty), breast lift (with or without implants) and liposuction.
“Few things can make as much impact on a person’s life as a tummy-tuck can,” says Dr. Asaad H. Samra. ”We are directly targeting the skin and fat of the abdomen that is resistant to diet and exercise. It’s simply an area that they can’t make better themselves.” A tummy-tuck refers to a surgery in which the lower abdominal skin and fat are removed, the “six-pack” muscles are tightened to bring in the waist, and the remaining skin “tucked” to give back those svelte curves. The procedure typically takes about two hours under general anesthesia, and the patient goes home the same day.
A breast lift repositions the nipple and areola higher on the breast mound. It can be done with or without implants depending on whether or not more volume or fullness of the breast is desired. A breast lift takes approximately an hour and a half under general anesthesia and is also an outpatient procedure. When done in conjunction with implants, the implant is usually placed under the pectoral muscle and can be filled with either saline or silicone. Liposuction describes a surgery in which unwanted fat is literally sucked out from stab incisions. Liposuction can be done with or without an energy source to treat the fat before removing it. Laserassisted liposuction, as an example, uses laser to melt fat and encourage skintightening. Once the laser has been used, then the treated fat is suctioned out as in traditional liposuction. A compression garment (or girdle) is commonly used for at least two weeks to help control swelling and bruising, and helps speed up getting your final result. These procedures can be done alone or in combination. “We commonly combine a breast lift with a tummy-tuck. That way there is only one recovery period,” says Dr. Samra. Prospective patients need to be evaluated during a consultation to make sure these surgeries are appropriate for them. Also, occasionally candidates are asked to see their primary care doctor to make sure it is safe for them to have the
surgery medically cleared. For those not ready to take the plunge into the operating room, there are nonsurgical options available for facial and body concerns. Botox is still one of the most commonly performed procedures to date and is used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles typically around the eyes and upper face. Additionally, Ultherapy is an FDAapproved treatment to lift in the face and neck using ultrasound energy. Hate that muffin-top and extra-love handles? Well, now we can actually painlessly melt that fat. What’s The Puffiness About? Inflammation is inevitable, especially when you are consuming the Standard American Diet (SAD). Eating the wrong foods for your body can cause a whirlwind of health issues. People are carrying around more inflammation than fat. The “Puffy” look is apparently “In.” Once you rid yourself of the inflammatory foods you can then start dropping weight. Everyone is a bio-individual and one food may inflame one person, but not the next. It really is trial and error. Who said this was easy? If it were it wouldn’t we be the healthiest country? Learn your body! That is the biggest take away from any weight loss program. Here are just a few of the foods that cause inflammation.

Local Worship Houses Host Boy Scout Troop 66 for Scout Sunday & Scout Sabbath
Radiant, Elegant, Natural Smiles
The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. Scout Sabbath is normally held the Saturday following Scout Sunday. The Scout Sunday and Scout Sabbath tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a “Scout is Reverent” and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their “Duty to God”. These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers who have earned religious emblems during the past year are recognized on this weekend.

On Sunday, February 9, the Matawan Methodist Church hosted the troop for Scout Sunday. Several Scouts performed readings and Pastor Federico A. Quezada spoke of how helpful the Boy Scouts have been to their Chartering organization and the various service projects they have undertaken. Troop Committee Member Mike Morizio spoke during the service to thank the church for allowing the Troop to be a part of their community. In addition to being the Troops sponsoring organization, the church provides the Scouts with meeting space, a place to hold ceremonies, and an opportunity for Scouts to participate in service projects and develop leadership skills. Troop 66 was founded in 1957 in Matawan, NJ and provides an active year round outdoor program for boys in 5th grade and above. Scoutmaster Bob Shea has lead the Troop for over 30 years and, along with his Assistant Scoutmasters, reinforces the ideals put forth in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Troop 66 gives back to the local community by conducting food drives, participating in civic events, volunteering at municipal events and completing Eagle projects to assist local organizations and clubs. Troop 66 meets weekly on Wednesday evenings during the school year from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Matawan United Methodist Church. The Church is located on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Church Street in Matawan. Masterpiece With Friends
Pinot’s Palette, an upscale “paint and sip” franchise opened in Red Bank in January 2015. Franchisees Rich Barton, Dorothy Fadell and Fred Fadell, natives of Staten Island, say feedback from the local community has been incredibly positive. Guests often say that coming to paint is so relaxing and fun; it’s their therapy! Since opening its doors in Houston in 2009, Pinot’s Palette has become the most innovative and creative place to connect with friends, wind down, share a drink and socialize. As a pioneer and leader in the paint-and-sip industry, Pinot’s Palette has put a spin on the traditional girls’ night out, date night and corporate team-building by creating a social experience that is delivered in the form of a two- to three-hour painting class where guests enjoy their favorite wine, beer or soft drinks from the bar
and snacks brought from home or from any of the fantastic local restaurants and stores. Pinot’s Palette is no-experience-required art event that focuses on fun and not precision. Pinot’s Palette provides the paint, paintbrushes and easels and their local, trained artists guide guests step-by-step through the featured painting of the night. Guests are pleasantly surprised by how simple it is to create a beautiful work of art – and many come back to create more pieces! Honing in on the recent trend of customization, Pinot’s Palette allows guests to tailor their experience by letting them to choose which specific painting they would like to recreate from an online schedule. Guests can also choose to have a private party to celebrate a bridal show-
er, bachelorette, birthday or just to have a private girls’ night out. Pinot’s Palette also offers fun events for kids from birthday parties to Girl Scouts, school trips and sports team get-togethers. When having a private party, the guest chooses the painting for the event from a library of more than 500 pieces! With more than 80 studios open across the country and more locations coming soon, Pinot’s Palette has become the hot spot to share a drink and socialize. Whether guests want to de-stress, connect with new friends or make new ones, or just tap into their creative energy, Pinot’s Palette is the perfect night out. At Steal BINGO, which is a variation of standard BINGO, groups of 8 to 16 sit at various tables and play independent rounds of BINGO among themselves. Each attendee brings a wrapped gift worth about $10 and puts it in the center of the table. The group then plays any style BINGO game — from straight BINGO to postage stamp — and whoever wins chooses a gift to unwrap, shows the table and keeps it — for the moment. Once all the presents are opened, the table plays to steal. Whatever you win is yours to keep unless the subsequent winner steals it from you. The next Steal BINGO, proceeds from which will be shared with 3 Hearts 4 Paws local animal rescue, will be held at the Keyport First Aid Building on April 11, 2015. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door. There is also a gift auction.

hen you walk into Plaza Laundry at Airport Plaza in Hazlet, you can’t help but notice the artwork that adorns the walls. Not your normal laundromat for sure, but owner Lisa Varandas orchestrated it to be that way. Ms. Varandas explained, “I wanted to make the laundromat unique and reflective of me and my personality. I wanted the decor of the laundromat to be special and feel inviting, just like if you were at home.”
Laundry is a chore many customers don’t enjoy, so Lisa has strived to make the Laundromat a fun, friendly, and unique environment. Lisa Varandas opened Plaza Laundry in September 2011, where she works on premise six days a week to ensure the highest level of cleanliness and service to her customers. Plaza Laundry is a self-service coinoperated Laundromat with full time attendants to assist customers, also providing an outstanding wash and fold laundry service, where customers can save time by having the attendants wash, dry, and fold their clothes for them. Plaza Laundry offers commercial wash and fold. They also offer drop-off dry cleaning and suede/leather cleaning. Plaza Laundry is open every day from 6:30 a.m. to to 9:30 p.m. (last wash 8:00 p,m,). For more information, go to www.plazalaundrynj.com, call 732.335.3737 or visit them at Airport Plaza, located at 1368 HWY 36 in Hazlet today!
The artwork is a family affair, as most of the paintings were done by Lisa’s father, George Schael (age 85), who also helps with machine maintenance and Lisa’s mother, Pat, who enjoys helping with wash and fold. On display, an assortment of several oil paintings, a 36-inch wall carving, along with a huge tile mosaic made out of individual pieces of tile – all done by George. “My customers are in awe of the talent of my father and they comment how unusual it is to see this in a laundromat,” explained Ms. Varandas. “My fathers’ art along with other handcrafted pieces brings the laundromat to a whole new level.” Aside from admiring the art, there are many other things
