I’m IMPORTANT

I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”

The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

he Kiwanis Club of Keyport is a driving force in the community and a strong supporter of local Key Clubs and Scouts. They do local service projects and participate globally through Kiwanis International. Keyport Kiwanis members came together once more for their annual Fish Fry held at the Town and Country Inn in Keyport on March 5.

Left to right: Keyport Kiwanis Club President Mike Ellithorpe joins MAST Key Club general member Jacqueline Plumaker, Lieutenant Governor Division 8 Adam Rubin, MAST Key Club Vice President Daniel McCormack, MAST Key Club Bulletin Editor Danielle Ciaurro, and general member Alexandra Gordon before the start of the Kiwanis Fish Fry on March 5, 2014 at the Town and Country Inn, Keyport.

Over 550 meals were served which included take-out orders. Members of the Keyport Kiwanis Club cooked the meal. Volunteers from MAST and Keyport High School Key Clubs helped to serve the guests. Members of Boy Scout Troop#364 also assisted with setting up and serving, said Keyport Kiwanis Club President Mike Ellithorpe. An approximate count on the number of guests who attended including the volunteers was 575 to 600. President Ellithorpe said, “Overall, I feel this was a success. We raised funds for helping the community, while providing the service of a traditional Ash Wednesday Fish dinner.” He added, “The money raised from the Fish Fry and Chicken Fry will fund Keyport Kiwanis’ service activities to support the local community and sponsor Youth organizations like Troop 364 and the Key Clubs of Keyport, Keansburg, MAST and Matawan.” Keyport Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Chicken Fry on April 28 at the Town and Country Inn.

embers of the North Centerville Volunteer Fire Company welcomed over 150 guests to a “wearin’ of the green” St. Patrick’s Day Dance on March 15, 2014. From tiny hats atop heads to shamrocks painted on faces to green beaded necklaces and of course a variety of green shirts – this event was all about the Green! Throughout the evening, DJ Brendan kept the music going by alternating well-known Irish songs with music from the 1970s to present. The music was even greater through the use of a full screen on the dance floor that displayed videos of groups who sang the songs. Several members of the North Centerville Fire Company arrived early to cook the traditional corned beef and cabbage,

and later in the evening the members served guests the meal, along with Irish Soda bread. About 30 members helped with the event. Captain Joe Sarro said he appreciated the generous donations from Tony of Poole Avenue Bar and Liquors as well as Mark of Park East. He explained that the St. Patrick’s Day Dance was one of several fundraisers being held so North Centerville Fire Company could build a 9/11 Memorial, which he hopes will be completed by late 2015. Upcoming fundraisers for the 9/11 Memorial Fund will be a Comedy Night on May 31 and a Halloween Party on October 25. Classic Film Series Offers Big Screen Look at

Oscar-Winning Epics

L

ast year, movie chain Cinemark took over Hazlet’s Rave Cinemas, it then incorporated the local theater into its Classic Series. Each week, movie fans can see a beloved film from yesteryear. This was all made possible with the advent of the more cost-efficient digital presentation. The April and May movie schedule kicks off with the TCM documentary, And the Oscar Goes to…, which recently premiered on the cable film channel. It showcases the highlights and controversies from the Academy Awards’ 85 year history. There are accompanying segments from numerous Oscar telecasts and film clips. Also, interviews with past winners like George Clooney and Tom Hanks are included. It airs Sunday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 16. Next, is the religious epic The Ten Commandments (1956). Directed by Cecil B. DeMille, it tells the story of Moses (Charlton Heston) when he defied the Pharaoh Rameses II (Yul Brynner) and led the Hebrew people to freedom. Known for technical tricks like the burning bush, and parting of the Red Sea, the film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1957. There will be a special showing for Good Friday on April 18 at 2:00 p.m. It also airs Sunday, April 20 and Wednesday, April 23. Russell Crowe starrer Gladiator (2000) follows. Helmed by Ridley Scott, it tells the tale of the decorated Roman General Maximus, who is betrayed by Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Enslaved and forced to perform in the Colosseum, Maximus fights to win over the people so he may avenge his family. The gladiatorial drama was nominated for a slew of awards upon its release, and won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. It airs Sunday, April 27 and Wednesday, April 30.

The next film stars Charlton Heston, and also takes place in an arena. It is Ben-Hur (1959), which recounts a friendship that sours, between Roman tribune Messala (Stephen Boyd) and a Jew named Ben-Hur, played by Heston. Following an altercation, Ben-Hur is exiled and imprisoned by Messala. After many years, Ben-Hur gains his freedom and Roman citizenship, and returns to his home in Jerusalem. A final showdown with Messala culminates in a dazzling chariot race. Ben-Hur was the first to win 11 Academy Awards, which included Best Picture and Best Director for William Wyler. It airs Sunday, May 4 and Wednesday, May 7. Another film that won Best Picture, Best Director and nine Academy Awards was James Cameron’s Titanic (1997). It is a romanticized tale set around the maiden voyage and sinking of the legendary ocean liner. Titanic focuses on the love that develops between First Class passenger Rose (Kate Winslet) and penniless artist Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio). It also features dazzling special effects to recreate the majestic ship and its demise. It airs Sunday, May 11 and Wednesday, May 14. Finally, is Spartacus (1960) starring Kirk Douglass and directed by Stanley Kubrick. A slave is forced to be a gladiator, but instead becomes a symbol of rebellion. He ultimately leads a slave revolt against the Romans. The historical epic won four Academy Awards. It airs Sunday, May 18 and Wednesday, May 21. Show times are 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, and 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Tickets are regularly priced, with matinees costing $7.75 and evening shows $10.75. Child, student, senior, and military tickets are $6.75. Each series also offers a bundle package of $30 for access to every film.

t may be one of the shortest St. Patrick’s Day parades, but it certainly isn’t lacking in fun. Hosted by Washington Engine Fire Department in Matawan, the fourth annual festivities featured fire departments from Matawan and surrounding towns as well as the Jersey City Firefighters Emerald City Pine n’ Drums. A traditional corned beef dinner and drinks at the fire department bar followed the parade, which took all of five minutes as green-wearing residents lined Jackson Street. Last year the shortest parade faced a friendly challenge from Freehold, whose residents said their parade distance was shorter. According to Google Maps, while Freehold’s distance is half the distance it takes Matawan marchers to walk from Spring Street to Church Street, the time to walk Freehold’s parade is longer. Regardless of distance or time, Matawan’s record-paced parade will be back again next year.

Pain management tips from local physical therapists STORY KAITLYN ANNESS Dr. Leaonord Samaribba and Dr. John Scifaldi speak at the Matawan Public Library about how physical therapy can help arthritis sufferers.

SERVICES:

B

y the year 2030, it’s estimated that 67 million Americans over the age of 18 will suffer with some form of arthritis, according to the Center for Disease Control. But Dr. Leonard Somaribba and Dr. John Scafidi of ProForm Physical Therapy in Aberdeen said there’s more to do than simply cope. “There are definitely things people can do for the pain besides just live with it,” Scafidi said. Arthritis progresses in stages, as the space between the bones and joints narrow. Muscles support the joints, but muscle tightness adds stress on the joints and ligaments, causing pain. Arthritis sufferers can opt for surgery or cortisone steroid shots, both proven effective, but Somaribba and Scafidi said physical therapy can both loosen the muscles and positively impact joints. Arthritis has many causes, including genetics, previous injury and high-impact athletics. Physical therapy should target the arthritis. Both Scafidi and Somaribba said they use low-load exercise with higher repetition, which promotes circulation and healing. Patients with arthritis in the knees can also benefit from custom bracing which stabilizes the knee and helps to increase the space between bones and joints gradually. “If we can control how the knee cap glides when you bend and extend the knee, it will reduce pain significantly,” Somaribba said. The doctors recommend aquatic exercise, cycling with a full range of motion, tailored home exercises and proper footwear to combat the daily pain of arthritis. ProForm Physical Therapy is often seen at community athletic events, helping athletes properly stretch and prepare for community races, soccer tournaments and more. “We try to stay as active as possible in the community,” Somaribba said. Alcohol Kills Over 80,000 Per Year WRITTEN BY DR. LISA GOLDING GRANADO OF IMMEDIATE CARE MEDICAL WALK-IN

A

pril is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to focus on the effects of alcoholism and all of the related issues. Binge drinking is the most common type of overindulgent alcohol consumption, classified as four drinks in a short period of time for women and five drinks in a short amount of time for men. According to the CDC, one in every six adults binge drinks and over 80,000 deaths per year are attributed to binge drinking. Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for young adults, leading to more deaths than drug abuse. It is said that someone who takes their first drink around the age of 15 is more likely to develop alcoholism than someone who starts after the legal age of 21. It is important to know the effects that binge drinking has on your body, aside from just impaired judgment. Impaired judgment can lead to an increased risk for sexual assault and sexually transmitted infections.  Heart disease, stroke and breast cancer, the leading causes of death among women, are all at an increased risk due to binge drinking. Women who drink during pregnancy can also harm their unborn child with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, which will have a life-long effect. Alcoholism can be prevented. Avoid binge drinking, and do what you can to help those around you avoid binge drinking as well. If you are pregnant, avoid drinking all together. It’s important to seek help from a healthcare provider for excessive drinking behavior. If you, or anyone you know, suffers from alcohol or drug abuse, call Immediate Care Medical Walk-in of Hazlet today to find out about our 10-point toxicology screening as well as our Drug and Alcohol Awareness program at 732.264.5500.

Educating Leaders STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN

his class teaches seniors how to become leaders, develop character traits for leaving high school and helping out the community. It is not about being the smartest, but an overall good person. The advisor is Mr. Justin Bloss, a world history teacher at MRHS. Bloss said that a big part of the class, which he calls “the apprenticeship”, was the community service projects done by the students. They can see the hard work they have done and how it affected so many people. He also thanked another teacher at the school, Mr. Michael Wells, for bringing the program to the school.

Matawan Regional High School (MRHS) is taking another step in education. This year, a new class for seniors with two teacher recommendations and a written essay on what an effective leader is, was introduced. It is called Civic Leadership Program.

However, if upcoming seniors think that they can just take the class and get an easy A, they better think twice. “It’s not just reaching out to my 23 civic leaders, it’s to give them the resources, tools and have them reach out to other kids in the school,” said Bloss.

Keyport’s 9th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The 9th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held on March 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Hundreds of people lined the streets of Keyport that day showing off their Irish Pride! The Grand Marshall was Cliff Moore and Deputy Grand Marshal was Patti Higgins Piney. Bands played at McDonaghs Pub on West Front Street for everyone’s listening pleasure. A special thank you to the following sponsors: McDonagh’s Pub, Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative, and the Keyport Fire Department. In its ninth year, this one fact remained, everyone was Irish at the Keyport St. Patrick’s Day Parade!

Making Waves With Healthy Snacking WaveBar brings vegetables and sweets together in one perfect snack.

STORY KAITLYN ANNESS

W

hat if you could have the taste of dessert with a serving of vegetables? Heaven, right? No, it’s Wave Bar. But definitely close enough. Created in Holmdel by Rick and Monica Guarnaccia, Wave Bar is the vegan way to get kids and adults alike a healthy serving of fruits and vegetables daily. Using no refined sugar, non-GMO ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup packed with 5 different vegetables and assorted fruits, the small startup is on its way to cornering the great-tasting health food market. “We’ve been spending a lot of time developing a third flavor, we started out with just two just to test the waters and see how people reacted to a granola bar with vegetables in it,” Rick said. Good news for the Guarnaccia’s, people reacted well. What started as a family recipe in their own Holmdel kitchen has grown to shelves in stores all over the Tri-State area with no signs of stopping. “We really wanted to start small. In a lot of the demos, we validated the con-

24

cept and parents loved the idea. When kids like it too, it’s a homerun,” Rick said. Now, Rick said people are looking for something sweeter. And as the two current flavors of Wave Bars hit more and more shelves, Rick and Monica are working to create a third. With chocolate, of course. “We debated a little bit, since we’re promoting healthy snacking, doing something with chocolate. But we’re working on a way to keep the core essence of the product the same, and the sugar low and natural.” The health conscience family continues to look for prime ingredients while injecting their customer’s love of chocolate into the bar. “People are always going to eat sweet, but if you can eat something with a nutritional benefit its obviously better,” Rick said. “It’s a lot of work to make sure we check all the boxes. We’ve been putting thought into what the marketing around it should be, how we should phrase it. In essence, we’re still a natural food company.”

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Wave Bar can be seen in Monmouth County stories such as Dearborn Market, Delicious Orchards, Cracked Olive Market and Sickles Market. Soon it will be seen on the shelves of Whole Foods, an achievement the Guarnaccias likened to the Holy Grail. And as the company expands rapidly, Rick said they are learning every step of the way. Wave Bar is now lining up a distributor, getting into more stores and actively doing small demos to keep the buzz going around the delicious granola bar. “Ideally, you pick up a couple of customers who become brand ambassadors,” Rick said. “There is nothing like our bar on the market.” The biggest challenge now? Breaking into school systems. Rick said while local faculty have loved the bar, often food decisions are outsourced to large companies in school districts. And Wave Bar just isn’t big enough…yet. “There’s a lot for us to be proud and excited about. We’re a small family-owned business, trying to get kids and adults to snack healthier.”

Matawan Regional High School Faculty that participated in the charity game against students.

What is a great way for students and teachers to settle differences and raise money for charity? How about a game of basketball? Matawan Regional High School, in Matawan, proudly hosted the Relay for Life Students vs. Teachers basketball game on February 19. Sixteen students, a mix of juniors and seniors, battled 12 teachers over a regular game of basketball. The crowd enjoyed watching the game, one section cheering the students and other cheering for the teachers. After four exciting quarters of basketball, the teachers just managed to defeat the students 53 to 52 in an amazing game for a great charity.

CLIFFWOOD VFW Host Patriots Pen & Voice of Democracy Compassion Integrity Expertise Extraordinary pediatric homecare Our service enables medically fragile children to be cared for in their home environment. • Highly trained pediatric nurses • Medicaid Provider STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN

On January 17, the VFW Post 4745 in Cliffwood proudly hosted the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy winners’ celebration. The Patriots Pen encourages middle school students to write about their view of democracy. The Voice of Democracy follows the same views, but focuses on high school students. It is a great way to show that students care about the democracy and freedom of our country. After many essays were written, members of the VFW post blindly judged three of the best for both the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy. Each of the six finalists received a prize for their phenomenal work. All of the finalists came from Matawan Aberdeen Middle School, for Patriot’s Pen and Matawan Regional High School, for Voice of Democracy. The Patriot’s Pen’s theme was “What Patriotism Means to Me.” In third place was Danae Hughes, she received $100.00 dollars. Second place was James Nicholas, who received $150.00 dollars. First place went to Anthony Fosu. He was awarded $250.00 dollars. Anthony read his essay to everyone in attendance including his family and his teachers. He decided to give the Wounded Warrior Foundation 10 percent of his award. The Voice of Democracy theme was “Why I’m Optimistic About our Nation’s Future.” Third place was Anatasiya Osnovia, she received 100.00. In second place was Nicole Florento, receiving 200.00. Not only in first place in VFW Post 4745, but first in VFW District 6 in Monmouth County and advanced to the VFW NJ State Finals was Sean Aiken. He was awarded $300.00. He also read his essay to the attendees.

Memorial Mustangs Flooded with Pride 2nd Annual Basketball Tournament

M

emorial Mustangs Flooded with Pride 2nd annual Basketball Tournament was held on March 1, 2014 at Memorial School gym in Union Beach, NJ. The all-day tournament was put together to help aide the athletic department of Memorial School after Superstorm Sandy. Michael Fanning, 41, an alumnus of the grammar school and long-time resident of Union Beach came up with the idea with help of Henry Arlequin (athletic director) and fellow alumni Christine Fredricks.

Michael is a self-proclaimed “un-handyman”, he says, “I wanted to give back to the community that helped raise me with the power of sports. I looked around after the devastation, and knowing I am not good with my hands to help rebuild things, I would try and get a bunch of 30 to 40-yearold, out of shape ex-athletes to come to together for a day of basketball, fun and prizes. Then go out for a drink to talk about how good we used to be at sports.” The first year the tournament had over 50 players, about 200 people came through the doors to watch, donate and take part

in door prizes. The glory days of basketball collected over $7,000.00, and that went to help the athletic department in all aspects, from getting fields back in shape to buying equipment. This year, they were brought back to Memorial School gym, 2013 was held at Holy Family School due to the displacement from Superstorm Sandy. Memorial Mustangs Flooded with Pride Basketball Tournament had over 60 basketball players partake in the games and giveaways, which included a TV, Kindle Fire, hotel stays and varies donated giveaways. Teams were made up of all basketball abilities; an all-girls team of former teammates from high school and college players, family members, one team had three sets of brothers and another team of friends from the neighborhood that played together on the playground since they were in 2nd grade. This year’s donations topped $3,000.00, in which a portion will be set aside for a scholarship going to the male and female scholar athlete of the year.

It was many years ago that Ezra Karkus & Benjamin Kantor began the Keyport law firm, establishing what would be long lasting and deep roots in Keyport Borough.

Larry Kantor, son of the firm’s originator Benjamin, and Gary Linderoth have been working together since 1986. As a general law practice, the firm deals with everything from family law to criminal law. Linderoth said the firm commonly represents several generations of families, cultivating relationships and remaining a reliable service in the Bayshore area.

Now, 75 years later, the law firm has evolved into Kantor & Linderoth and sits comfortably on West Front Street.

Keyport Law Firm’s Deep Roots Are a Testament to Borough’s Strength

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

“Our roots are very deep here,” Linderoth said. The Kantor & Linderoth Office was once owned by NJ Natural Gas, which used it primarily for more than a dozen typists to type customer bills. When computers began to do that work, Kantor bought the building and the firm has found a home there ever since. “You feel like you know the town and the town knows you,” Kantor said. “We’ve seen Keyport change a lot.” In recent years, the town’s biggest evolution has come as a result of Superstorm Sandy. For Kantor & Linderoth, it meant a busy time representing their existing clients for insurance claims. But when Sandy’s devastation was fully realized, many of the firm’s clients simply moved. “A lot of our clients no longer live here. Now, our practice is turning back to where it was before. So its exciting to get back to normal,” Linderoth said. Linderoth, one of the original founders of what is now the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative, said just like many Keyport business owners his firm was able to ride out the storm and help make Keyport strong once again. But as Keyport moves forward, both Kantor and Linderoth are fond of its rich past. “The history of Keyport is undersold,” Kantor said, recalling his grandfather and father taking the ferry from Perth Amboy to Keyport to buy horses to make furniture deliveries. Keyport, Kantor said, was once the gateway to Monmouth County for many visitors. Both Kantor and Linderoth intend to continue serving Keyport and its surrounding towns diligently, working with Keyport residents and business owners to help Keyport evolve while remembering its history. “You can rely on us to do a good, solid job. That’s why we’ve been here so long,” Linderoth said. Kantor and Linderoth can be reached at 732.264.9300 or online at kantorandlinderoth.lawoffice.com.
