Waves of Support Event in Sea Bright Raises Funds and Awareness Shore area business professionals gathered on the Sea Bright oceanfront last month to celebrate the Jersey Shore and help local communities at Waves of Support, a local fund raising effort conceived and organized by Red Bank’s Navesink Business Group and Jersey Promise. This event would not have been possible without the committee: Marie Barbero, VP Valley National Bank; Andrea Guttadauro, WRAT; Robert Lowe, NBG President and Ocean First Bank; Donna Beriont, DNB Events - New Jersey; Mary Ellen Landolfi, The Write Room; Sherilyn Przelomski, Business Enhancement Services and Training; John Bruzzese, Freehold Network for Success; Steve Catania, The Cheese Cave; Paul Barlo, Barlo and Associates;Tania Lisitski, Primerica; Kristen Rankin, Solari Creative; Chef Pete Cruz, Windows on the Water; Larry Meluso, Director of Catering for Windows on the Water; Ken Scaggs, CEO Kerr Agency; Bill Donnelly, Oak and Apple Partners; Sue Patterson, Ultrasonic Mobile Cleaning; Clem Lisitski, Primerica (Photo Credit: More than a Memory Photography & Videography)
More than 250 attendees enjoyed a festive evening of networking and celebration at Sea Bright’s Windows on the Water, on Ocean Avenue. Guests enjoyed samplings of menu offerings from the Red Bank Flavour Restaurants, as well as music from XPLOSIVE Entertainment, as well as Jersey Shore musicians Brian Kirk and Gary Philips. WRAT Radio Personality Robyn Lane made an appearance to acknowledge donors and event sponsors. The evening raised $16,000 that will go directly to communities that continue to recover from the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will also support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monmouth County.
“We’re thrilled that so many Monmouth and Ocean county business professionals came out to celebrate and support our shore communities,” said Navesink Business Group spokesperson Robert Lowe. The evening brought together many regional business and tourism organizations including the Monmouth-Ocean Development Council, Jersey Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau, Red Bank and Seaside Heights Rotary Clubs, Freehold Network for Success, Eatontown Industrial Park Association, and the Northern Monmouth, Eastern Monmouth Area, Jersey Shore, Brick and Manasquan Chambers of Commerce. NBG’s Waves of Support initiative will continue with a third event that will take
place just before the start of summer. Details on this event will be announced on their website at www.NavesinkBusinessGroup.com. The Navesink Business Group is a network of business professionals based in Red Bank, New Jersey. Established in 2006, they share ideas and platforms that promote new business opportunities. As a business consortium, they believe in giving back to the community and focus their efforts on local assistance. Established in 2013, Jersey Promise was created to specifically help people and businesses in Central New Jersey restore and gain the confidence that was lost as a result of the disaster of Super Storm Sandy. 13th Annual Business Expo Held at The Reception Center at St. Clement The Matawan-Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce held their 13th annual Spring Business Expo, and drew quite a crowd in late March. Despite a cold night with a good possibility of snow, the Chamber organizers were quite pleased with the outcome of 150 residents and professionals attending the event. The 52 exhibitors, including 42 businesses and 10 non-profit organizations offered a wide range of products and services for both residential and commercial needs generating a great deal of interest among the attendees.
Business owners, representatives and professionals visiting the exhibitors’ tables were able to network and make new connections while the residents were able to meet and get to know the names and faces of the businesses that work within their community and support the local economy.
The room was full of energy as the crowds moved around taking in all that was available to them. HAZLET RECREATION DELIGHTS YOUTH WITH EGG HUNT AND MAGIC SHOW
H
azlet Recreation held their annual Eggstravaganza on April 19 at Veterans Memorial Park Ballfield. Hundreds of township children from age three to eight attended the free event gathering the plastic eggs and searching for the special egg that would get them a prize. Former Recreation Director and current Township Committeewoman Barbara Ronchetti said many years ago the event was held at the Beers Street playground. The Eggstravaganza has been ongoing for well over 35 years. In attendance were part-time Recreation Director Kathy Viscardi, the Township Committee members and employees, and the Recreation staff. Assisting with the event were the Raritan High School Wrestling and Football teams, as well as members of R.A.I.N.E. The Easter Egg Hunt portion was divided into three-year-olds only; four-year-olds; five and six-

year-olds; and lastly seven and eight-year-olds. The race for all of the groups was fast and furious but most everyone was smiling and proudly carrying their baskets of eggs at the end. The Easter Bunny was of course on hand to greet the children and pose for parents who wanted to take pictures. The entire event was free. Not long after the egg hunt, children and their parents were welcomed to Cullen Center for a Magic Show showcasing Kevin C. Carr of Curriers Magical Mania. A former Ringling Brothers clown, he presented a family-oriented show that was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Magic tricks, audience participation, juggling, and making the little ones laugh filled the 45-minute portion of the afternoon. A visit from the Easter Bunny, a surprise-filled Eggstravaganza, and an awesome Magic Show – what could be better! Great job Hazlet Recreation!

Matawan Easter Egg Hunt STORY KATIE FRIEDMAN
I
t was a gorgeous day on April 12 in New Jersey. The sun was shining, the wind had a gentle breeze; the perfect day for kids to attend the Matawan Easter Egg Hunt at the Matawan Community Center. At 11:00 a.m., children, ages one to nine, ran across a lawn covered with Easter eggs. Each colorful egg had delicious candy inside, but if a child found a gold egg they won a gift card to The Hobby Shop in Aberdeen. Children also got to meet the Easter Bunny and see a fire
truck. Walgreens played a huge part for the event, giving away a basket filled with candy and pool toys to last for summer. Deirdre Ring, director of the Department for Recreation in Matawan, was overjoyed by the events success and thanks every single person who volunteered. “We love doing it for the kids, they get a kick out of it, and it’s a really nice festive event.”

SNEEZING Season is Here
WRITTEN BY DR. LISA GOLDING GRANADO
A
lthough we have lived in a “polar vortex” for much of this winter, spring has sprung and the dreadful allergy season is upon us. The most important thing to do when it comes to allergies is manage your symptoms before they start, then continue to fight them throughout the season. Allergies can develop to both indoor and outdoor allergens. Some of the most common allergens include: pollen, animal and
pet dander, mold and dust. Symptoms typically include sneezing, coughing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sinus pressure and headache, but may also include post-nasal drip and wheezing. Although avoiding allergens can sometimes be impossible, it is important to try and do so. Avoid outdoor activities when the pollen count is high and on very windy days, keep windows in the car and home closed using your air conditioning instead. Use humidifiers and air purifiers when you can. If you do have to be outside, try to shower when you go back indoors. In order to avoid allergens, you have to know what your allergies are. We at Immediate Care can help you do that with our Allergy Clinic. A simple scratch test, or allergy skin test, can be performed to identify exactly which allergen is triggering your symptoms. Our allergy symptom evaluation also includes: pulmonary function testing. With these results you can take all the necessary steps to make sure you avoid the runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing and sinus congestion. Our allergy clinic offers a quick and easy way to test you for most allergens. From there we will be able to help you build the best plan to fight your allergy symptoms. If you have any questions please call us at Immediate Care Medical Walk-In, Hazlet at 732.264.5500.

DEARBORN MARKET SPRING
TEA PARTY & EGG HUNT
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Dearborn Market hosted a Spring Tea Party in their Garden Center on April 12 and welcomed a special guest - the Mad Hatter! Parents and children enjoyed free mini cupcakes, scones, and tea from The Republic of Tea. For a small fee, each child was able to decorate three sugar cookies. Free face painting was available, and once outdoors they could visit the Spring Petting Zoo, which had ducks, bunnies, baby chicks, and lambs. The five-hour event included an Egg Hunt at which children could search for the Golden Egg and win a garden party for themselves and seven friends. Three time slots were available to accommodate four-yearolds and under, as well as two time slots for five to eight-year-olds. All groups sold out quickly. GERI SCHLEICH BECOMES PRESIDENT EMERITUS AND FOCUSES ON TEENS AS SHE HANDS REIGNS TO CO-CHAPTER PRESIDENT DENISE VIOLAND
Pajama Program’s New Jersey Chapter President Steps Aside After 10 Years And 150,000 Pajamas
P
ajama Program supporters, friends and family surprised Geri Schleich on Saturday, April 5, 2014 to celebrate her 10-year presidency of the New Jersey chapter of the national Pajama Program and transition to President Emeritus. Under Ms. Schleich’s leadership, the New Jersey chapter has collected and distributed

nearly 150,000 new pajamas and 85,000 new books to children in need in her State. She has grown the chapter with the help of 20 County Coordinators and hundreds of volunteers annually who organize and conduct pajama and book drives and plan fundraising events. New Jersey was the first chapter formed following the charity’s inception in New York. That first year, 300 pajamas and books were distributed to four (4) New Jersey Receiving Organizations (ROs). Receiving Organizations are institutions around the U.S. where at risk children are living - shelters, orphanages/group homes,
foster care homes, and temporary housing facilities. Today there are 350 approved ROs on New Jersey’s list. For over a decade, Schleich and her team have helped children of all ages feel a little less lost and alone at bedtime. The program’s mission is straightforward: provide the comfort of new warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story to youngsters in need. The impact of this simple gesture, of knowing that someone cares, can be far more dramatic. In 2007, under Schleich’s tenure, Pajama Program opened the NJ Pajama Program Reading Center on the grounds of Poricy Park in Middletown, NJ. Schleich will now focus on organizing readings with groups of children at the NJ Reading Center as well as in receiving organizations across the state and Poetry Plus with the teen girls she has become so fond of. Despite this extraordinary effort in New Jersey, there’s still a long waiting list of children in need. “Ideally we would like to provide each needy child in the state with a warm pair of pajamas,” says Geri Schleich. “However, with over 300,000 children in New Jersey living below the federal poverty limit, our goal of distributing 30,000 pairs of new pajamas this year barely scratches the surface of need.” “The NJ Chapter has exceeded my expectations in both contributions and volunteerism. It has been my good fortune to know and work with so many people

who care about the children we serve, Geri Schleich continued.” “Denise Violand has worked closely with me since 2007 and there is not a doubt in my mind that she is the perfect person to run the chapter at this time.” “I am filled with enormous gratitude and love for Geri who has become my close friend as she has lead our NJ chapter to amazing success,” says Genevieve Piturro, Pajama Program’s founder. “I am especially touched that one of Geri’s favorite groups is the teen group. Her plan to work with teen girls and our Poetry Plus program is where Geri’s heart is now and we are so grateful. She is raising awareness about the plight of older children in group homes and shelters – they get lonely too, and sadly, they feel forgotten. The emotional baggage these children carry from being destitute at this sensitive and perceptive age is heart breaking, and they are burdened with it for the rest of their lives,” says Piturro.

Garden Tourism Thrives in Keyport Keyport GardenWalk Set for June 7th & June 8th Keyport GardenWalk, a free, self-guided walking and biking tour of over 30 public and private gardens in Keyport, is proving to be a model for garden tourism in the historic bay front town located in northern Monmouth County. “Last year, we had approximately 2,000 visitors from the tri-state area during the Keyport GardenWalk weekend,” said event Chairperson Clare Skeen. “Everything about Keyport GardenWalk is free – the gardens, garden talks, pedicab rides, en plein air artists painting in various venues and live music. veryone knows someone affected by cancer. And the youth branch of local charity the RAINE Foundation, (lovingly nicknamed Drops of RAINE), are on a mission to increase awareness about the impact of cancer and the power of knowledge.’ “My mom has breast cancer, so any way I can help others is a wonderful way to give back to the community,” said Tyler Jones, a senior at Raritan High School. The RAINE Foundation has teamed up with the American Cancer Society to make this year’s Relay for Life, an all-night fundraising effort and celebration of cancer survivors, the biggest one yet. “The Hazlet Relay is the biggest one in Monmouth County,” Morgan Dickens, junior at Raritan High School said. “We’re trying to make it the biggest in New Jersey. While one goal of Relay for Life is to fundraise for research, patient medical bills and travel and more, freshman Ryan Dickens said for him it’s more about spreading awareness. “Awareness saved my mom’s life,” he said, speaking of Patti Dickens, founder of the RAINE Foundation. “Our grandfather passed away...if he had a simple blood test, he would be alive today.” Through a combination of guerilla marketing tactics like yarn bombing Hazlet businesses, painting windows,

tying ribbons and painting the town purple, the RAINE Foundation and the American Cancer Society are on a mission to let the residents of Hazlet know it’s Relay time and it may be time for a routine screening. According to the American Cancer Society, “Screening increases the chances of detecting certain cancers early, when they are most likely to be curable.” The RAINE Drops are working with the Hazlet Business Owners Association, Hazlet Township and other area groups to increase attendance at Relay for Life where everything from bull riding to pie eating contests will keep participants up all night. “It’s an overnight event because cancer never sleeps, so why should we?” Ryan Dickens said. Hazlet’s Relay for Life will take place May 31 at Raritan High School. The day kicks off with a survivors lunch, and by sundown participants will honor victims of cancer with a luminaria ceremony. Anyone is encouraged to form a Relay team, or donate online to the Hazlet event at relayforlife. org. To find the Hazlet event, enter zip code 07730 on the website. Dickens said, “Every day, 400 people celebrate a birthday they wouldn’t have thanks to efforts like this.”

aint John Vianney High School (SJVHS) students receive the Pope Pius XII Religious Medal. Juniors Brandon Bennett of Hazlet Troop 137 and Luke Quinn of Union Beach Troop 134 both received the Pope Pius XII Religious Medal on March 2, 2014 at St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Trenton. The awards were presented by Father Michael A. Santangelo, diocesan Scouting Chaplain and Pastor of Epiphany Parish in Brick. The award is the highest of four awards that can be earned by Boy Scouts of the Catholic faith. The Pope Pius XII program explores value and validity of different life choices (single, married, religious, ordained) and ministries within the church as calls from God. Luke Quinn states that “earning the Pope Pius medal enabled me to learn about current issues facing the church and society and it also allowed me to realize the importance of all ministries and occupations in the church are calls from God.” Luke earned his Eagle Scout Award in May 2013 after he and his family made 265 new oak missalette holders for Holy Family Church in Union Beach and installed them. Every Sunday Luke is able to see how his project has benefited the church and its parishioners. Luke’s mother, Suzanne Quinn is extremely proud of her son, “he is a self-motivated young man, who has high standards and sets his goals even higher.” Brandon Bennett has been involved in the Scouts since he was in first grade. He started as a Tiger and progressed through the ranks and is currently a Life Scout. He is in the planning stages of his Eagle Scout project and hopes to complete it by the end of the school year. Brandon has earned all four of the religious awards that are available to youth scouts of the Catholic Faith. As a Cub Scout he earned the Light of Christ Award, which explores ones relationship with Jesus, and Parvuli Dei, which helps discover the presence of God in Brandon’s life, family, and parish. As a Boy Scout, Brandon earned Ad Altare Dei, which helps a scout grow in faith and increase their knowledge about God and the Church. The fourth award is the Pope Pius XII. Brandon explains, “the Pope Pius XII represents my journey over the last year as I learned about the different ministries in the Church and how God calls people to various tasks.” Brandon’s favorite part of Boy Scouts is camping because he travels with his Troop to various places, “every activity I have taken part in has taught me valuable life lessons which many people don’t learn, such as first aid, wilderness survival, and leadership.”

STORY LIZZ DINNIGAN
Steal BINGO Raises Proceeds for Keyport First Aid
C
ontinuing to grow in popularity, Steal BINGO has emerged as real crowd-pleaser as well as successful fundraiser for Keyport. The April 5 event raised $2,930, and proceeds were evenly distributed between the Keyport First Aid Auxiliary and Three Hearts for Paws. Organizers are seeing a trend that includes more men in attendance. “When we first started doing Steal BINGO 10 years ago, it was a big group if we had 70 people,” says JoAnn Crane, event chairwoman. “But it has grown and grown. Seeing more men come has excited us. It started as a girls’ night out, but now the men are enjoying it. Each time, we see a new face. It’s been spreading by word of mouth.” Steal BINGO is different from regular BINGO.
Here’s how it works: Each table (about 9 to 16 people) plays among itself. Each person brings a wrapped gift worth about $10 and puts it in the center of the table. The group then plays any style BINGO game (from straight BINGO to Four Corners), and whoever wins chooses a gift to unwrap and show the table. Once all the presents are opened, then the table plays to steal. Whatever you win is yours to keep unless another player steals it from you. There are five events a year, from October to June. The next Steal BINGO will be held at the First Aid Building on May 31. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door. There is also a gift auction. For more information, call JoAnn at 732.739.1863.

n Thursday, May 22, 2014, the Bank of America located on Route 34 in Aberdeen will host the annual community event, “Promoting Art in the Schools”. The artwork of Matawan Regional High School students together with Home Away From Home Academy elementary students will be displayed ‘gallery style’ all day. There will also be a special guest appearance by top selling American artist, H. Hargrove. Comparison of all these works (elementary, high school, & an accomplished artist) exhibited together exemplify the tremendous growth in art that transpires within young children as they grow into adulthood. Promoting art in schools is an important lesson for people of all ages to embrace. All school year, the Home Away From Home Academy students learn the biographies of influential artists, different time periods of art, the various mediums that can be used and more with a certified departmentalized art teacher. This event cultivates those lessons by having the children rendition some of the most famous works of art throughout history. The Matawan Regional High School students will present award winning original pieces from sketches, to oil paintings, photography, and more. Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served beginning at 4:00 p.m. Local community members, township officials and Matawan Aberdeen School District staff are expected to attend this fabulous showcase. For more information on Home Away From Home Academy, please call 732.290.0033 or visit www.hafha.com; to learn more about Matawan Regional High School please visit http://www.marsd.org/ Domain/81. Keyport Launches First Town Bonfire STORY LIZZ DINNIGAN
The Borough of Keyport/Keyport Recreation Commissions’ first-ever ‘Spring Beach Bonfire’ was postponed once due to a deep freeze, and then rescheduled to Friday, March 28, when it drizzled all day and then the winds started howling at 25 mph an hour before the bonfire was set to be lit. It wasn’t looking good. But the organizers had faith that the weather was going to turn in their favor. And oh were they right. The event drew approximately 200 enthusiastic residents to Keyport Waterfront’s Beach Park on what turned out to be the first warm, balmy evening of the year. Spirits were high, as friends and neighbors finally were able to gather together outside after this rough winter. As the sun was setting over the bay, Keyport Boy Scout Pack 364 constructed the bonfire under the supervision of the Keyport Fire Department with wood donated by Jersey Firewood of Hillsborough and the Uptown Bar in Keyport while attendees arrived on the sand with their kids and beach chairs in tow. Clusters of people circled around the bonfire to chat with neighbors, sang along to the acoustic banjo and guitar music provided by GorillaBob and Marc Adam Tappan, joined in the IHOP-hosted children’s pancake-eating contest, snacked on hot chocolate and cookies, and just enjoyed the laughter as all the children ran around and played carefree with their schoolmates. “The bonfire was a much-needed event for our community,” says Keyport Councilwoman Sophia Lamberson. “With our ongoing Sandy recovery efforts and long winter, we needed a reason to come together and celebrate Keyport, its waterfront and residents. Due to its success, plans are in the works for a fall bonfire. ” 30

Keyport GardenWalk Selects Artwork for 2014
With over 50 entries from local artists, the selection has been made for the official 2014 Keyport GardenWalk poster. “A Fairy Garden” by Keyport artist Karen Cross was selected by an impartial panel of judges to represent this year’s event. According to Ms. Cross, who attended Ducret School of Art and Design, “it all began with a box of crayons. I had to share them with my table in Kindergarten and it made me cry!” Ms. Cross has worked as a freelance designer, sign painter, muralist and floral designer. “Keyport Garden Walk is very important to me. I’ve been on the
tour for two years and witnessed the joy it brings to so many people. Offering a painting is one more way of supporting this wonderful event”. “A Fairy Garden” is part of a series of panels by Ms. Cross based on American quilt patterns from the 1800s to early 1900s. According to Cross, “The fairy garden is placed in the setting of a woodland floor. My inspiration was the imagined joy of happening upon this tiny treasure during a walk in the woods in spring.”
