Welcome

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

W

ith the official kick-off to the summer weekend past us now, we look forward to the relaxing days ahead of us. The agreeable weather is the perfect backdrop for the 2013 summer season’s outdoor events and festivals. Our Local Events page has this season’s unique things to do around Monmouth County and our Facebook page keeps you up to date on your area’s happenings on a daily basis at Community Mag NJ.

This month and every month, we will be spotlighting a “community maker” in our area. This month, we have chosen Cliff Moore of Hazlet, who is a true man of the community, please go to page 12 to learn more about him. We would love to hear who you think should be highlighted in your community, please email into us at info@communitymagazinenj.com to let us know who true pillars of our towns are – so we can give them the recognition they deserve! I would also like to touch on the Oklahoma tornado that happened in late May, this tragedy is a horrible event Mother Nature has dealt our country again. As in most things, something positive has occurred to me, the good people of New Jersey and other states have once again helped each other in a time of need. Oklahoma was there for us in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and now we are paying it forward and helping them out. I see how everything comes full circle, and it is refreshing and heartwarming to know that our nation still stands together.

azlet PBA held a fundraiser on May 4 at Park East in Hazlet, which was attended by about 200 people. In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, guests enjoyed a buffet of Mexican fare, along with an open bar and great music by a DJ. Hazlet PBA President Joseph Forgione explained that they had partnered with the RAINE Foundation for the event, and that they would receive a portion of the proceeds. Great door prizes offered by the Hazlet PBA were a trip to Mexico, Ipod Touch, Sony Digital Camera, and a Nintendo Wii. The RAINE Foundation sold tickets for an Emerson television. One of the biggest sponsors for the Hazlet PBA is Mr. Michael Hanus, an attorney

in Woodbridge. “It’s always a great time,” he said of the events held by the Hazlet PBA. President Forgione noted that in previous years, their fundraiser took place on a Party Boat, but due to the economy, this year they decided to stay local. In 2012, Hazlet PBA donated $10,865 towards scholarships, charities, and other local worthy causes. “This was a very successful evening and we are very appreciative to our sponsors and all who attended,” said PBA President Forgione at the end of the evening. “We want to say a special thanks to Park East for hosting our event. They opened their doors to us and were a big help. Their support was wonderful,” he said.

Community Maker

Spotlight on

Cliff Moore

A

s a business owner and local business leader, he uses all of his resources to devise a plan and to carry it out. Simply said, Mr. Moore opens his heart but uses his head, and in the end, chaos turns to calm, and tears turn to smiles.

One of the first groups he helped was Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Monmouth County. “We partnered with the Keyport Bid, put on a Fair in the parking lot of our Keyport IHOP and raised money for them. The response and gratitude was so overwhelming and I realized we were influencing the lives of young people,” said Mr. Moore. He has since supported organizations such as STARS, R.A.I.N.E., the Keyport Police Explorers, various school groups, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Odyssey of the Mind, and Clean Ocean Action. As a multi-business owner, Mr. Moore gets hundreds of requests a year for donations. His decision to grant a request depends on what the need is and how many people his business donation will affect. “Community and youth organizations can raise money at our IHOP or The Belly Flop Café located at the Hazlet Pool and Tennis Club. We give thousands of dollars’ worth of certificates for school functions, charity events and the like to help them raise money. Our Keyport IHOP is a central location that has high traffic and is a good location to collect and distribute for organizations.”

Hazlet Girl Scout Troops of the Jersey Shore awarded his IHOP a special recognition for their support of the troops. The NJ Restaurant Association awarded the “The Good Samaritan Award” to Mr. Moore in recognition of him as an industry leader who goes above and beyond during a time of need. Mr. Moore has also been the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award given by Rotary International for his philanthropic contributions. “As a business owner of a National Franchise, I believe it is important to give to the community. Most national brands are very limited in what they do locally because their business is strictly a profit center. We want the community to know we are local owners who have a stake in the community and give as generously as we can. We are not people who get paid to do a job and go home every day. Our Keyport IHOP has become a local resource and we are proud to be part of the successes of all the Bayshore communities,” said Mr. Moore. In his position as President of the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce and President of the Keyport Business Improvement District, Mr. Moore said, “I am very lucky to have the people who are on the Boards of these two groups. I may be the President but most of what happens is because of the other business leaders that support me. I learned a long time ago to surround myself with people who are brighter and smarter than me. My role in these organizations is to have the vision and to reduce and eliminate the obstacles to get things done. Others start most of the things I support.” He is also a Board member of the Hazlet Business Owners Association, and co-chair of the Bayshore Senior Center in Keansburg. Mr. Moore is also on the Hazlet Relay for Life 2013 Committee as well as a volunteer and supporter of the R.A.I.N.E. Foundation. Mr. Moore was one of the organizers of “The Beacon of Hope” relief center after SuperStorm Sandy, which was located in the space now housed by a new 12

ShopRite in Hazlet. A partnership was formed between St. Benedict’s Church, the R.A.I.N.E. Foundation and the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce. The “Beacon of Hope” distributed over 1 million pounds of food, emptied and distributed over 40 tractor-trailers of clothing and supplies, and had over 100,000 people come through from all over Monmouth County during the three weeks of operation. “None of this would have been possible without the thousands of volunteers and companies that sent employees every day to help.” He was awarded two medals for his efforts after SuperStorm Sandy by the Mayor and Township Committee of Hazlet. As a Citizens Leadership Councilman, Mr. Moore received medals for extraordinary achievement, valor, and ability in the protection of the Hazlet Community and its citizens. He was the organizer of the Trunk or Treat in Hazlet after SuperStorm Sandy. Additionally, the Twin Lights District, Boy Scouts of America, awarded him the “Hometown Hero” award. “During the “Beacon of Hope” there were many scout troops from the Twin Lights District that volunteered and made donations. All of the troops in the Twin Lights District rotate and do fundraising for their activities at IHOP,” said Mr. Moore. When asked what motivates him to continue to organize relief centers for victims of hurricanes, fundraisers for those in need, drop-off sites for supplies going to the troops, and the many other ways he assisted those in need, Mr. Moore responded, “It has almost become a reflex that when there’s an opportunity to help it just happens. It’s hard to put into words but every disaster or cause is a learning lesson to do it better the next time. I’m proud of the fact, that I’ve become the go-to guy when things happen. People still call and e-mail me about Sandy-related needs and I will put them in contact with someone that can help them if I can.” He continued, “As a small business owner and leader I am committed to any group that needs help in the Bayshore area. In my opinion, these small communities have different roots – they work with each other and don’t worry about who is in charge or who gets credit. It’s about taking care of whoever needs help. These communities were affected the same as the Shore Tourist towns that received all of the publicity, resources and attention but fended for themselves and have created stronger communities in the aftermath of SuperStorm Sandy.” Mr. Moore said he would not be able to do all that he does without the support of his wife Mitzy, his son Rene and daughter Kazia. “My family always goes above and beyond to help. If they are not working with me on a cause they are working on one with someone else. During the relief efforts at “The Beacon of Hope” my wife Mitzy ran the businesses to free me up and then came to help in the evenings. While we at the “Beacon of Hope,” my children were volunteering in Keyport and helping there.” Presently, Mr. Moore noted that the R.A.I.N.E. Foundation, which operates all year around is currently in Oklahoma assisting the survivors of the devastating tornado. The Keyport IHOP is currently accepting gift cards for R.A.I.N.E. to distribute there.

K

eyport Community Day was held on May 18 at the Keyport Central School. For the third year in a row, local businesses and organizations, as well as the staff, faculty and students of Keyport High School and Keyport Central School worked together to present a four-hour informative, exciting event. Presentations by the band, choir, cheerleaders, and Reader’s Theatre Grade 1 took place throughout the day. School program displays showed what the students were interested in and artwork along the hallway and on tables revealed the amazing talents of the Keyport students. Tom Durnin from “America’s Got Talent” enlisted the help of volunteers and kept everyone laughing with silly tricks and antics. Outside, several Field Games took place under the guidance of Mr. Peter Miller. DJ Double C Productions kept the music going throughout the event. Once again, Tom’s Ford offered a Drive One 4 UR School chance to test drive a Ford and have Keyport Public

Schools receive a donation. Community booths indoors were as varied as the businesses, and representatives from each talked with visitors all day. Keyport Fire and First Aid were available to answer questions; the Keyport Recreation Commission representatives explained what they offered. Keyport Food Ministerium accepted non-perishables. Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Lisa Savoia noted that there were many diverse resources available to the residents of Keyport and most of them were a part of Community Day. Periodically, Mrs. Savoia called out raffle ticket numbers and the winners received gift certificates from various local businesses. One of the first winners was Heather and Taylor McVay who won a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. A “Dine Around Town” raffle to win gift certificates for dinners at participating restaurants was also available; the winner was announced later in the day. Lunch was available thanks to Maschio’s Food

The model is already generating interest,” said Business Administrator Ed McManus. A Referendum is tentatively scheduled for September 24, 2013.

S

hore Flicks is excited to announce that a full schedule of free outdoor movies will be returning to the Jersey Shore this summer. The Free Summer Movie Series presented by XFINITY will feature 65 nights of movies in 15 towns throughout Monmouth County plus Long Beach Island. “In the aftermath of Sandy, we couldn’t be more thrilled about being back on the beaches and in the parks,” said Shore Flicks owner TJ Brustowicz. “Especially in towns that were so directly affected like Sea Bright, Keyport, and Spring Lake.”

Shore Flicks is pleased to welcome Comcast as the title sponsor this summer. “The summer movie series is a natural way to bring the community together, and that’s especially important after an event like Sandy,” said Comcast Regional Vice President of Government Affairs Bill Kettleson. “Comcast is thrilled to support the series and help Jersey Shore residents reconnect.” One of the highlights of the 2013 schedule is Shark Week, as the classic Jaws is shown eight straight nights beginning August 18 in Sea Bright. “Jaws on the beach is fast becoming a Jersey Shore tradition,” said Brustowicz. “It will be particularly exciting to return to the ‘scene of the crime’ when we show it in Matawan.” The 1916 shark attacks in Matawan Creek were the inspiration for Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws and the subsequent blockbuster film.

As in previous years, each night Shore Flicks will be collecting non-perishable food items to be distributed to food banks and pantries throughout the area. This summer, the Free Summer Movie Series presented by XFINITY will also support two Sandy-related charities, RAINE Foundation and Sea Bright Rising. People are encouraged to follow Shore Flicks on Facebook and Twitter for updates on the movie nights, including cancellations due to weather. Winner of the Asbury Park Press Reader’s Choice Award for Best Free Entertainment in 2011 and 2012, Shore Flicks has been providing the best in outdoor movie entertainment in Monmouth County and throughout New Jersey since 2007. had a table of t-shirts bearing the RTB logo. Restore the Bayshore was started shortly after Hurricane Sandy hit the area, and their fundraising efforts helped many families. “We are here tonight to raise awareness that the need for help is still very strong in this area,” said Ms. Szabo. PBA President Marsala said the PBA always donates back to the community and last year gave out $10,000 to such organizations as Restore the Bayshore, Heroes Helping Heroes, and Hope for Highlands. The Comedy Show event was a mix of fun and fundraiser and appeared to be enjoyed by everyone. Hazlet residents Carmine and Stacey Losurdo, who are also business owners shared, “We enjoy supporting our communities and encourage the support of Restoring the Bayshore!” Residents of Morganville, John Anselmo, a Holmdel businessman, and his wife Mare, a Jazz vocalist and pianist, agreed that being supportive was important.

Simple.Childlike. POWERFUL. THE JACK PINTO MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND BRINGS COMFORT TO MANY STORY SUSAN MURPHY

A

n opportunity for a community and a family to begin healing was found in the form of a playground at Fireman’s Park in Union Beach, New Jersey. The community ravaged by a superstorm; the family’s loss of a young son from the senseless violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The Jack Pinto Memorial Playground, located in Fireman’s Park in Union Beach was dedicated on May 4 and attended by the Pinto family - Dean, Trish, and older brother Ben, as well as other family members and several residents of Newtown, Connecticut. The playground, which is the second of 26 such playgrounds to be built along the coast of three states, was the idea of New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (FMBA) President Bill Lavin. The Sandy Ground Project officially titled The Sandy Ground 26, Where Angels Play, will create the playgrounds as living memorials to all children who have been victimized through violence while creating a safe, fun place for them to play. Firefighters, police officers, teachers and support staff, and volunteers will assist in building the playgrounds. Young Jack Pinto, a six-year-old avid Giant’s fan loved the swings, almost as much as he loved Victor Cruz and the Giants. His seventh birthday was May 6, 2013. Jack’s father, Dean, shared his thoughts at the ribboncutting ceremony that opened the playground named in memory of his son. “It is overwhelming for our family to see all of the people here today. We were treated by everyone in Union Beach and the surrounding areas like part of their family, from the first moment we spoke to them.” He paused then continued, “It would be Jack’s seventh birthday on Monday. What a fitting present to give him – a beautiful playground that children will enjoy for years.” The little ones who will enjoy the playground for many years to come will not know that from groundbreaking to the dedication, it only took four weeks to complete the playground. RAINE (Reaching

All In Need Everyday) Foundation Founder Photo Credit Marco Caracappa Patti Dickens expressed her amazement. “I can’t believe we did it!” RAINE, NJFMBA, and Gateway Church of Christ, who led the garden initiative, partnered together and were joined by hundreds of volunteers from the initial March 23 cleanup of the grounds, to the April 5 groundbreaking, and now to the dedication of the Jack Pinto Memorial Playground. NJFMBA President Bill Lavin acknowledged the appearance of two-time Super Bowl Champion Sean Landeta and current Giant David Wilson. He added, “With all due respect to the athletes and Super Bowl Champions, there is one Giant that we need here today – the little boy of a giant, Jack Pinto. Who else but Jack could lift up an entire community like Union Beach that was so devastated by the storm! Jack has touched so many lives.” He noted that Ben Pinto was the honorary foreman and drilled the first holes to begin the project. President Lavin thanked Giordano Construction of Kenilworth, New Jersey, who are the main contractors and will do the work on each of the 26 playgrounds. Toni Giordano and Rich Picerno said they have a long relationship with the NJFMBA. Another long-term partner was Gateway Church of Christ, who arrived in Union Beach just days following Sandy to hand out supplies and offer support. Carl Williamson offered words of comfort at the start of the ceremony. “From the swings to the monkey bars, from the slides to the climbing wall, each part of this playground is designed for healing – Bless this place as one of healing and of new memories. Each of us should swing a swing in memory of Jack.” Patti Dickens told the Pinto family, “The children and leaders of the community here have placed their handprints on a monument to symbolize our commitment to you and to Jack. Know that Jack will

never, ever be forgotten.” She then led the Pinto family to an area behind the playground, where Ben cut the red ribbon and pulled off the cover to reveal a white monument covered in red and blue handprints made by Union Beach children and residents. Nestled atop the monument was a plaque bearing Jack’s own handprint, which had been done as an art project shortly before he died. Below his name and handprint it reads, “We will hold your hand always and your heart forever.” White doves were released and they circled the playground before disappearing into the blue sky. In the midst of the dedication, a white flag with Jack Pinto in red letters was raised, just below a Giants flag. The playground dedication included speeches by dignitaries and presentations of Proclamations and a Resolution. Ben cut other red ribbons to reveal a large sign showing a smiling colorful picture of young Jack, and beside it states, “Celebrating the Life of Jack Pinto Son, Brother, Friend, Hero.” An inscription below that notes that the playground is a gift to the youth “in an effort to enhance and sustain their precious childhood.” At the entrance to the playground ramp, Ben unveiled a blue image of a New York Giants jersey with the words PINTO and below that 80 on it. To the delight of the excited children waiting to try out the entire playground, Ben cut the final ribbon to the entrance and led the happy little ones up the ramp and onto the playset. Ben smiled as children called to him and despite his sadness, it appeared Ben knew his little brother Jack would feel right at home there.

HAZLET TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT RAISES FUNDS

T

he Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Foundation honors the legacy of love given by Stephen Siller, FDNY, who laid down his life on 9/11. “In the Line of Duty” programs have been established for Firefighters, First Responders, and Military. The Foundation’s website states that it recognizes that the torch held by Stephen and his fellow fallen brothers on 9/11 has been passed on to those who serve in the Armed Services. The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation in conjunction with the Gary Sinise Foundation, started a program, Building for America’s Bravest, that constructs state-of-the-art “Smart Homes” for severely wounded troops returning from war. The custom-designed homes are done on a case-by-case basis, addressing the needs of providing energy efficiency, ease of accessibility and automation to ultimately provide the most severely injured military personnel with the capability to live more independent lives, states the Foundation website. Currently, the Foundation is raising money to build a “Smart Home” for SPC Bryan Dilberian of Brooklyn, New York. Once the funds are attained for his home, the monies collected will go to the next soldier for his home – all over the country. Hazlet Township Fire Inspector John Beslanovitz explained how Hazlet helped. “I went to local organizations in Monmouth County for donations. On May 18, Armed Forces Day, me and several firemen collected donations for four hours at Laurel Avenue

and Highway 36 and at Poole Avenue and Highway 35.” Mr. Beslanovitz noted that the following organizations donated. V.F.W. Post 4303 from West Keansburg - $1,000; Monmouth County Fire Prevention and Protection $500; Bayshore Fire Chiefs - $500; Hazlet Fire Company - $250; and Aberdeen Fire Company - $100. “The rest was raised by the Hazlet Township North Centerville Fire Department,” said Mr. Beslanovitz. The check presented to The Foundation totaled $5,100. John LaBarbera, FDNY Batt. Chief and Executive Board member of The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Foundation was overwhelmed by the amount of the donation. “It’s amazing what was collected in so short a time. People were so wonderful, and we are so grateful. As an active New York City firefighter, it is an honor to team up with our Brothers from New Jersey, the Hazlet Fire Department, who were very instrumental in raising funds for this program.” When Hazlet Fire Inspector Beslanovitz began raising money, it was to be earmarked for the Building for America’s Bravest program, specifically towards SPC Bryan Dilberian’s “Smart Home.” Executive Board member John LaBarbera noted that there was another need to be met – that of purchasing motorized wheelchairs for over 50 severely wounded soldiers. The funds collected by Hazlet Township North Centerville Fire Department will be applied toward the Wheelchair Fund.

hronic nerve pain. Muscle Atrophy. Chronic fatigue. Depression. These are just some of the symptoms Ian Sullivan (age 38) deals with every day. Ian was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) when he was in his mid-20’s. The cause of MS is unknown, and there is no cure. The symptoms of the disease are numerous and vary from person to person. For Ian, it hit him fast and it hit him hard. Ian is housebound and has been on disability since 2007. He has lost 45 pounds since being diagnosed with MS, most of which is muscle. As time progresses, he is becoming weaker and losing more muscle mass. Traditional type physical therapy is not safe for Ian because of his lack of strength, poor balance, fatigue and chronic nerve pain. When Ian researched different types of therapy for MS, he discovered a great way to help him improve and/or maintain muscle mass, muscle function, balance and mobility – and that with the “Endless Pool”. It is a small therapy pool that provides resistance swimming, enabling the swimmer to swim in place. Since Ian cannot travel to physical therapy multiple times a week, it would be ideal for Ian to have an Endless Pool installed right in his home. With Ian unable to work, the thought of raising $30,000, the total projected cost to have the pool installed in his house and have an enclosure built around it, seemed possible, but not probable. However, Ian set up a website at www.msfight.org to try to do just that. Ian’s former classmates at St. John Vianney, through reconnecting on Facebook on their “Class of 1992” page, have been holding various fundraisers to help Ian reach his goal, such as a gift basket raffle at their 20 year reunion; auctioning paintings by a former classmate; forming “Team Ian” and running a 5K; holding a diamond earring raffle at a former classmate’s jewelry store and a Pampered Chef online fundraiser. Ian is getting closer every day to his goal, but there is still work to be done. If you would like to donate, please visit www.msfight. org and make a donation via credit card, debit card or PayPal.

t’s hard to decide which is more incredible. That the six-foottall operational Ferris wheel currently on display at The Hobby Shop in Aberdeen was built by a 13-year-old or that it contains over 8,500 snap together pieces.

Created by Matawan resident Tyler Marolda, the project was built using the K’NEX 6-Foot Ferris Wheel snap-together-kit over a two- to three-week period. According to Hobby Shop owner Marvin Schutzer, the Ferris wheel was brought to the store in three pieces and then assembled in the shop’s window where it will be on display through the summer. Completed as part of the Hobby Shop’s tribute to the rebuilding of the Jersey Shore following SuperStorm Sandy, the Ferris wheel is the focal point of a simulated boardwalk scene. “This was just an incredible accomplishment for Tyler, all the more so considering his age,” said Schutzer. “The kit, which is billed as the largest K’NEX building set of all time, is recommended for ages 16 and up, so a project this complex would typically be done by an adult. From what we understand, Tyler did this all on his own. We are very proud to display his creation for all to marvel at.” The Hobby Shop is located in the Aberdeen Town Square Shopping Center on Route 34. Founded in 1978, the family owned and operated hobby, toy and game store features a wide variety of kits from K’NEX and other manufacturers. K’NEX is one of the sponsors of President Obama’s STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) program, joining such other well known companies as Lego Systems.

Promoting Art in the Schools

O

n Thursday, May 23, 2013, the Bank of America located on Route 34 in Aberdeen hosted “Promoting Art in the Schools” by displaying the artwork of Matawan Regional High School students together with Home Away From Home Academy elementary students. There was also a special guest appearance by Donna Ferrante, professional water colorist. Comparison of all these works (elementary, high school, & an accomplished artist) exhibited together exemplified the tremendous growth in art that transpires within young children as they grow into adulthood. Promoting art in schools is an important lesson for people of all ages to embrace. All school year, the Home Away From Home Academy students learned the biographies of influential artists, different time periods of art, the various mediums that can be used and more. This event cultivates those lessons by having the children rendition some of the most famous works of art throughout history. The children, ages 5-7, are encouraged to present and speak about their painting, why they chose it, and the history behind it – all while building their self-esteem and confidence in public speaking. The Matawan Regional High School students presented award winning original pieces from sketches, to oil paintings, photography and more. The support of the community inspired the children to continue with their self-expression through creativity. This is a cause that is close to the hearts of Phyllis and

Carmine Visone, owners of Home Away From Home Academy, as well as Barbara Barnes, Art Director of Matawan Regional High School; they truly believe that art is a powerful expression that promotes self-development so that children can understand themselves in relation to the society in which they live. These academic and social lessons are key components to the development of young children, particularly at Home Away From Home Academy, who has just achieved re-accreditation through the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools. Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres were served and local community members, township officials and Matawan Aberdeen School District staff attended to enjoy this fabulous showcase.

R Hope, One Room At A Time

oom In Our Hearts (RIOHearts) is a New Jersey-based non-profit organization dedicated to helping families whose homes have been affected by crisis. Their mission is to redecorate one room in the home of these families at no cost to them. “Hurricane Sandy was the impetus to start this organization, but it was an idea I have had for a long time,” explained Executive Director Katharine Koehler, who founded RIOHearts in November, 2012. Although the crisis right now are the needs of families post Sandy, Mrs. Koehler said, “Other family disasters do occur, and we will be there to help for the long haul.”RIOHearts is contacted by different volunteer, government and relief agencies with names of those in need. A Project Manager and an assistant meet with the homeowner for a preliminary interview to discuss which room they would like decorated, in what style, and the colors to be used. “Our goal is to make it feel like it is their room, not ours,” said Mrs. Koehler. Follow up visits and phone calls are generally required. Families are also asked if there are any special pieces they have that can be incorporated into the room. Within a couple of weeks, RIOHearts has gathered the furniture, home décor and window treatments appropriate for each home The items used to redecorate a room are either donated, bought at garage sales, or flea markets. “I am an artist and am passionate about not adding everything to the landfill. Perfectly great things are often discarded that can be repurposed and reused,” said Mrs. Koehler. She noted that all of the volunteers who assist her have this same passion and belief. Mrs. Koehler added that as a teenager she designed the bedroom she shared with her sister by using recycled objects and their existing furniture.

Left to right: Union Beach Clerk Anne Maria Friscia, Room In Our Hearts Executive Director Katharine Koehler, and Union Beach Administrator Jen Maier have worked closely together to put smiles on the faces of families affected by Sandy.

Once everything is collected for the room, numerous volunteers arrive to get the work done. “We use high school boys to help load and carry, generous husbands to fix, hang with molly bolts and do miscellaneous tasks while other volunteers dedicate themselves to layout and design. We have had high school and college students interested in design help us set up. It is all about creatively giving back,” explained Mrs. Koehler. As for the companies who assist RIOHearts, Mrs. Koehler said Carpet Value Outlet in Middletown generously donates rugs; Thibaut Wallpaper and Fabric Company in Newark, New Jersey is their prime source for adding a professional design element to most rooms. “Outback Steakhouse in Middletown often times will treat our recipients to a meal as we set up the room. This way, they can walk in and be surprised. We cannot say enough about these company’s product quality and considerate spirit,” she emphasized. Although there is so much work to be done in Union Beach, Mrs. Koehler noted RIOHearts has worked in other towns. “We completed a lovely bedroom in Highlands and are currently working in Keansburg and Leonardo.” A couple in Union Beach, recent recipients of the generosity of Room In Our Hearts, excitedly shared the joy of seeing how their kitchenette/family room was transformed with a “seashore chic” look. “Room In Our Hearts was so willing to help us and just great to work with. Katharine (Koehler) and Denise (Trewhella) arrived on time and made the entire project so non-stressful. It is amazing what they did. Now I can sit and enjoy the room. This is such a wonderful organization and Katharine and Denise are two special ladies. We have been out of our home for seven months – it’s so nice to

M

ay 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Temple Shalom of Aberdeen. The temple was founded by a small group of pioneering Jews who moved into what was then Matawan Township. Over the winter of 1962 and the spring of 1963, twelve families started to organize a Reform Jewish Temple for residents of Strathmore and surrounding communities. Since its founding, Temple Shalom has endeavored to meet the spiritual, cultural and social needs of the Reform Jewish Community of Northern Monmouth and Southeastern Middlesex counties. Services were originally held in Strathmore School, in the now defunct Plaza Theater in Hazlet, in the Matawan Regional High School auditorium and at other area locations. The Temple’s building, at 5 Ayrmont Lane, was constructed in 1967 and was finished in time for the High Holidays that year. The public dedication ceremony, including the laying of the cornerstone by the town’s mayor, occurred on Sunday, October 1, 1963. The building has been expanded in several subsequent stages. In 1999, Rabbi Laurence P. Malinger became the spiritual leader following the retirement of Rabbi Henry M. Weiner who had served for thirty-two years. In July, 2012, Cantor Debi Zeiontz joined the clergy. The professional staff also includes Director of Temple Schools Cindy Terebush. The religious school spans the entire range from kindergarten to 12th grade. In 1991, responding to the needs of younger congregants, Temple Shalom established a nursery school which is now the Early Learning Center. The anniversary celebration began with special Shabbat services on May 10 and May 11, which included several former students of Temple Shalom’s religious school who have gone on to become Jewish professionals - rabbis, cantors, and educators and the honoring of past leaders including founding members, presidents of the Temple, Brotherhood, Sisterhood and directors of the religious and Early Education schools. The celebration concluded with a gala evening featuring Broadway-themed entertainment by Cantor Debi Zeiontz.

WALK4FRIENDS Overwhelming turnout for 2013 Friendship Circle Walk In Holmdel

I

n the true spirit of community, nearly 1,300 people of all ages gathered under sunny skies for the fifth annual Walk4Friends on April 28 at Vonage Corporate Center in Holmdel. The goal of the walk was to raise funds and awareness for the Friendship Circle, a program that provides friendship for children with special needs, but it accomplished much more than its primary mission. “So many parents came over to us during the event to thank us for dedicating a special day to their children,” said Chanale Wolosow, director of The Friendship Circle in Central NJ. “Imagine 1,300 people coming to show their support for your child and your family. The parents were beaming with pride, and the children with special needs were the spotlight of the event.” As Mitch Baum, a parent of a Friendship Circle child living in Marlboro shared, “The Walkathon was an amazing day. It was touching to see how many people came out in support of the Friendship Circle programs. There were so many things for the kids to do in an environment where they -- and their families -- can truly relax and enjoy themselves. I am always touched by the volunteers who are part of Friendship Circle -- they give their own time to put a smile on the face of children who otherwise might not have anyone they could call a “friend”.” Walk4Friends kicked off with an opening ceremony and pep rally, including a group warm-up led by a New York Sports Club Fitness instructor, Vicki Eisen. The one-mile

walk around the Vonage campus was led by the Marlboro High School marching band. After the walk, participants enjoyed great food, rides, games, and a featured show by “Cirque-tacular acrobats”. Among the guests were Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen and Holmdel Mayor Patrick Impreveduto. “The outpouring of love from the community to support the Friendship Circle was truly amazing,” said Mayor Susan Cohen. “So many volunteers give of their time to make this program possible and so many more were responsible for the success of this important event.” Volunteer Alyssa Sperling, a student of Marlboro High School who spoke during the opening ceremony shared ,“Through Friendship Circle, I have learned that the greatest gift one can receive is the gift of giving to others. Sam, my special friend has taught me everything I know about friendship”. Walk4Friends has raised over $130,000 towards their goal of $150,000 needed for Friendship Circle programming. Monies raised go directly to fund the social and recreational programs for children with special needs. You can still make a donation at www.walk4friends. com and help Walk4Friends reach their goal.
