KEYPORT TEACHER RECEIVES TOP RECOGNITION Story Lizz Dinnigan
AMANDA ANDREWS - the 7th grade mathematics teacher at Keyport Central School for the last three years (who also spent two years in the Special Education department) -- has been named 2015-16 Monmouth County Teacher of the Year. How did you learn about your designation as 2015-16 Monmouth County Teacher of the Year?
It was a Tuesday morning, and I received a phone call from my building Principal Mr. Anthony Rapolla. He said the State Department of Education was coming to our school to visit the Math Department. I was very nervous, and I made sure I had an exemplary lesson ready to be delivered. At 11:15 a.m. Mr. Rapolla, along with Joseph Passiment, Interim Executive County Superintendent, and Lisa Savoia, Keyport School District Superintendent, entered my classroom. Mr. Passiment addressed my students and shared the exciting news. He told the students that I was named Monmouth County Teacher of the Year and congratulated me. Later that afternoon, the announcement was made to the entire Keyport Central School staff.
How were you selected? Was there a nomination process, teacher evaluation or was it based on standardized test grades? In order to be named Monmouth County Teacher of the Year, you must first be nominated as the Governor’s Teacher of the Year for your individual school. In December, I was awarded the title of Keyport Central School Teacher of the Year. I was nominated by my fellow colleagues. After being recognized as Keyport Central School’s Teacher of the Year, I went on to submit a formal packet nominating myself as Monmouth County Teacher of the Year. I had to submit a resume, my summative evaluation rating, as well as four formal papers on various topics. These topics included a professional biography, demonstration of education leadership, my philosophy on teaching and student successes.
What are the benefits of having this special designation?
The benefits are intrinsic. This recognition motivates me to keep doing what I know is necessary to teach students the skills they will need in the future. It validates what I accomplish daily in my classroom. It was also an honor to be recognized by my colleagues, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and expertise with Monmouth County teachers.
How did you get into this profession?
Out of the countless number of reasons there are to becoming a teacher, the reasons that most greatly impacted me were my parents and my mathematics background throughout my high school experience. My parents and I both valued education, and I knew that whatever career path I chose, my education I received from a young age on was crucial to succeed. My love for mathematics was always prominent during my schoolaged days. 6
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
I was never a “reader.” I was always calculating prices and solving math problems wherever I went. During high school, I developed an unexplainable passion. This passion is a passion for children, for making a difference in lives, for building relationships that matter. This passion is a passion for opening the doors of success. The passion I had for working with children came from the satisfaction of being able to make a difference in the life of a child. This occurred to me when I volunteered one summer for the extended school year program for children with special needs. Learning from my parents, I was able to effectively help these students with their academics. This passion is the driving force in my desire to teach. If I could make a difference in the life of one student, then it would all be worth it. It’s important for teachers to be a positive role model to their students, and I wanted to be the difference-maker. Now I have the best of both worlds: I am able to teach a subject that I truly love.
What do you find most rewarding about teaching?
My greatest rewards in education are not the certificates on the wall, or the honors or awards I have received, but the successes I’ve achieved with my students. The true reward comes from their accomplishments. In my class, accomplishments are not just the mastery of a skill, passing a test or achieving proficiency on a standardized assessment. They are the times I hear my students using what I have taught them outside the classroom. It is the times I see in their eyes the passion for the subject or the times they are truly proud of what they accomplished. It is the times when students return to my classroom with a smile on their face, saying “thank you” for what you taught me. I am very fortunate because I’m able to do more than just teach mathematics to middle school students. I inspire, challenge, mentor, nurture and counsel. Whenever I have successes with my students in any of these areas, I know I have accomplished much more than just a grade on a report card. I have contributed to a lifetime of learning. Teaching has allowed me to have a positive impact on lives. At the end of the day, I know I tried my best to reach every student who enters my room. I can’t think of any other profession that would provide me such rewards.
How do your students inspire you?
Within my classroom, my students inspire me on a daily basis. This occurs when my students answer their reflection activities with enthusiasm about their newfound skills, or when they teach each other the lesson they learned. They inspire me to want to make sure I have a different skill to teach them daily, as well help them to reach their potential. Another way they inspire me to keep doing what I have been doing is when my former or current students come and ask me to help them with an assignment outside of my class or just simply come in my classroom to have a conversation.
Matawan First Aid & Rescue Squad and South Aberdeen EMS Merges to Form Bayshore EMS
ON MAY 12, 2015, Matawan First Aid & Rescue Squad members approved the merger with South Aberdeen EMS during their meeting, and Aberdeen EMS approved it a week prior. “It is with great honor I have the pleasure of announcing the next chapter for our organization. Effective June 1, 2015 the Matawan First Aid & Rescue Squad will be merging with South Aberdeen EMS to form a new organization which will be known as Bayshore EMS,” which is part of a statement that posted on both squads’ Facebook pages by Matawan First Aid & Rescue Squad’s President Stephen J. Morley. The statement goes on to read: “This may come as a surprise to many but in a time where volunteerism and donations are down we are forced to look into alternative options to continue serving our communities. By sharing resources we will be able to achieve our goal of providing exceptional EMS services in a timely manner for the residents of both jurisdictions and surrounding towns. Although we will have a new name, a new logo, and a new coverage area; we are still going to be the same volunteers that have dedicated our lives to protecting the community we call home.” PHOTO: On May 20, 2015 – over 40 members of both squads met for a meet and greet dinner.

New Consumer Protection Law for Pet Stores

In December of 2015, both the New Jersey Assembly (74-0) and Senate (370) voted to unanimously pass S.1870, a Pet Store Disclosure bill sponsored by Senator James W. Holzapfel (R), Assemblyman Gregory P. McGuckin (R), and Assemblyman David W. Wolfe (R). In February of this year, Governor Christie signed the bill into law. So what is S.1870 and why is there so much support for it?

S.1870 is a new Consumer Protection law that requires pet stores to disclose the source of the puppies they sell for purchase, and will eliminate sales in New Jersey pet stores of puppies acquired from the worst puppy mills in the nation, as reflected in the USDA inspection reports required for all commercial dog breeding operations.

Pet stores sell puppies acquired from inhumane, unhealthy sources even though the pet store representatives almost uniformly imply or explicitly state that their puppies only come from small-scale “private breeders” and not from puppy mills. But shipping documents reveal that pet stores source from mammoth commercial breeding facilities – many with hundreds of dogs confined to tiny wire cages, and many who are repeated cited by the USDA for severe violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

The result of pet stores sourcing from substandard breeding facilities is customers unwittingly purchasing sick or genetically compromised puppies. Nancy Sasso, a Holmdel resident lost her beloved dog Lola who died an untimely death due to bad breeding. It is Nancy’s hope that the new law will prevent families in the future from the heartache and financial hardship that her family suffered. Lola contracted a parasitic infection at birth which ultimately caused her immense suffering before she died at under two years old.

New Jersey pet store customers should not be duped into unwittingly supporting the cruel puppy mill industry, or into buying puppies exposed to the unique set of physical and behavioral problems created by such a substandard upbringing.

KEYPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY (KHS) welcomed over 30 guests to their second annual Coffee and Dessert event at the Keyport First Aid building on May 4, 2015. Guests were encouraged to bring their historical items and share the story behind them. The social was open to Keyport residents and residents of surrounding communities. KHS was formed over 40 years ago in an effort to keep the rich history of Keyport alive. The Steamboat Dock Museum, where thousands of Keyport historical artifacts had been displayed was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. KHS has been trying to find another home for the items that were salvaged, as well as the new items. Currently, the group is hoping to purchase a property at 34 Main Street. During an update given at the Social, it was noted that the State has not given its approval as of yet. If this property is purchased, the museum would not be open until 2016. As guests enjoyed the desserts donated by Lenora’s Café, Jersey Shore Soups and Subs, Drews Bayshore Bistro, and Mr. Green Tea Ice Cream, several guests shared their items. Young teen Julian Rebelo showed his collection of old glass bottles, one from 1894 that was stamped with Keyport Phar-

macy, and another Windex bottle that still contained the blue cleaning liquid. He also shared the story of some of his old cameras. Nicole Ferrante Caddle held up a picture taken over 60 years ago of young children sitting on an open front porch, whom she noted were the children of Keyport firemen. An impressive collection of memorabilia pertaining to the Yankees that included a $3 box seat ticket, pictures, and a 1952 score card were shown by Jud Thorne. KHS Board member Nancy Smalling showed a loom that was used to wrap silk ribbon many years ago. President Cassie Milligan said KHS is in dire need of members as well as volunteers to help during functions. The group meets every first and third Monday of the month from April to October at the Keyport Senior Center. The group can be contacted through their email at KeyportHistoricalSociety@gmail.com; or by calling 732.739.6390. The mailing address is PO Box 312, Keyport, New Jersey 07735. I’m IMPORTANT As a Mom, I play many roles. I am the chauffeur, errand-runner, chef, and costume-maker to three daughters. Making sure my girls have everything they need leaves little time to take care of myself. But when it comes to getting my mammogram, I make it happen! I go to the Women’s Center at Riverview.
Even though life as a mom on-the-go can get hectic, my children are everything to me, and I know I mean the world to them. So, with all the available technology and the knowledge that early detection is my best defense against breast cancer, why wouldn’t I make time for my annual mammogram? I am a mom. I am a leader. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305. Or visit www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com/WomensCenter

Art Society of Keyport Hosts Annual Fundraiser Story Susan Murphy
The Art Society of Keyport (ASK) held their annual fundraiser, Casino Night, at Yesterday’s Restaurant in Hazlet on April 23. The entrance fee included a buffet dinner, beverages and the gratuity. Over 30 people enjoyed the social event, especially the gaming tables manned by the staff from New Jersey Casino Nights. A silent auction featuring items donated by individuals and local businesses added to the excitement of the evening. ASK is a non-profit organization comprised of a group of artists, craftsmen and art appreciators who get together to promote the arts. Their works are inspiring and show the beauty found in Keyport. ASK members as a group are invested in their community and one of their goals is to bring public art to Keyport. President Charles Merla feels

that art is helping this area to heal and recover from all of the loss it encountered. Both Vice President Mary Ann McKay and Treasurer Peter Dant were pleased with the funds raised, which will allow ASK to continue planning and working on future art projects. All three Board members wished to thank everyone who helped with the event, as well as the generous donors, the staff at Yesterday’s and New Jersey Casino Nights, and especially the guests who supported ASK by attending this fundraiser. THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT COMES TO ABERDEEN? AT PROFORM PHYSICAL THERAPY, one of the hottest new healing therapies has finally become available to you! INFRARED Therapy is fast becoming a phenomenon in the medical field and the variety of conditions that INFRARED has shown to help, heal and relieve is quite remarkable. With our medical grade full spectrum treatments, there is something here for everyone. Some of us may remember the old red light bulbs of the 70’s and even though we were on the right track back then, Infrared therapy has come a long way. Far Infrared Therapy (FIR) utilizes light wavelengths below the frequency of visible red light. Though the light is not visible to the human eye, it can be felt as heat. Used in radiant heating units in homes, Far Infrared penetrates below the skin and can be used as a medical therapy. Medical uses of Far Infrared Therapy light or heat therapy has been found to increase blood flow and white blood cell function; help remove toxins from the body and speeds the healing of tissues; increase the metabolic rate and stimulates the hypothalamus; and creates a low fever state, with a one to three degree rise in body temperature, this stimulates the production of white blood cells and killer T cells, thereby improving immunity. Many years ago, the FDA approved far infrared lights to warm newborn infants in hospitals. Many diseases respond to FIR therapy, such as: arthritis, bursitis and rheumatism, which are improved by the heat element; obesity in the fact that it burns calories; and has been shown to reduce symptoms of Raynaud’s syndrome, Lupus, and Chronic Fatigue. The human body is capable of absorbing infrared light wavelengths between three and 50 microns. The most beneficial have been found to be the waves between six and 14 microns, with the best absorption rate at 9.4 microns. The light rays penetrate into the body to a depth of one to three inches, providing
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
deep heating to muscles, organs and cells. The light dilates blood vessels, thereby increasing oxygen flow to the joints and muscles and reducing pain. Improved blood flow to the lymph nodes and reduces inflammation. Heavy metals are eliminated by Far Infrared Therapy. When the body is exposed to 9.4 microns of far infrared waves, the water molecules in the body vibrate. The vibration causes the ion bonds to break down, allowing for the trapped gases of toxins such as carbon dioxide and Sulphur dioxide to be eliminated. Claims have been made FIR therapy can remove a wide variety of metals from the body, including lead, arsenic, mercury, copper, cadmium, urea, nicotine, and the residue of prescription drugs. At ProForm Physical Therapy, you can experience the benefits of Infrared Therapy for various conditions. Our patients experience relief from conditions such as joint pain, muscle pain, headaches, psoriasis, and fibromyalgia. ProForm Physical Therapy is conveniently located on Rt. 34 in Aberdeen & on Rt. 35 in Holmdel. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call ProForm Physical Therapy today at 732.970.7882.
Heather Lawrence, Licensed Massage Therapist, says that Far Infrared Therapy has been a great addition to the existing Massage Therapy service available at ProForm Physical Therapy.

Keyport PTO’s Chinese Dumplings Fundraiser Story Lizz Dinnigan
ABOUT 25 MOMS – some with their cooking-curious kids in tow – turned out for the “Learn to Make Chinese Dumplings” PTO fundraiser at Nemo in Keyport in early May. A couple hundred dollars was raised for the organization. For the third year in a row, the Nemo’s owner “Li” vibrantly entertained his guests. The past two dinner workshops involved a lesson in sushi rolling, while this year he talked about the origination and significance of dumplings in his Chinese culture. Li called up one table at a time to learn how to make the dough, a pork-cabbage filling and dipping sauce. He also pre-made hundreds of dumplings for sampling, including fish-cilantro, celery, pork, cabbage, lamb and veggie.

Aberdeen to Hold Third Annual Job Fair The Aberdeen Economic Business Council (EBC) and Aberdeen Township Council are hosting their Third Annual Job Fair, which will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Matawan Regional High School. “Last year’s Job Fair attracted over 450 attendees and more than 40 private and public sector employers offering a wide variety of positions, an increase of ten exhibitors over the event’s inaugural year,” said Carmine S. Visone, Chairman of the Aberdeen EBC. “We hope for even stronger attendance this year.” The Aberdeen EBC sponsors the event in cooperation with Mayor Fred Tagliarini and the Aberdeen Township Council. As with the 2014 Job Fair, students from the High School’s Business Academy will be assisting the EBC in the promotion and operation of the event. For further information, visit www.aberdeennj.org. Matawan Regional High School is located at 450 Atlantic Avenue, Aberdeen, NJ 07747. WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM JUNE 2015
