O
n Saturday, June 8, American Legion Raritan Post 23 hosted a grand reopening. The Legion members invited family, friends and the public to their celebration which included a barbeque while a DJ played tunes. The day also offered a ribbon cutting ceremony, which was attended by local elected officials. The back of the Legion building is located along the Keyport bay. When Hurricane Sandy occurred last October, it sustained major damage. “It was devastating,” said Commander Ed Poplaski. The bottom level of the building, where the bar and lounge, and a smaller rental hall are, sustained severe water damage. “The water came from the front to the back; 200, maybe 300 feet long.” The jukebox, pool tables, and gaming machines were also destroyed. The Legion sought to rebuild immediately. Once the building was declared sound by an engineer in November, its members got started. “All of the gutting was done by post members who were physically able to assist [and some volunteers], then we brought in professionals,” said Poplaski.

“It put a lot of extra burden on us to get the rebuilding done. It hurt our revenue intake because we couldn’t rent the halls or open the lounge,” informed past commander Ward Javins. The funds raised by Post 23 go towards supporting the local community, like the Boys Club, volunteer fire department, Keyport High School, and college scholarships. “We basically drained our reserves to rebuild,” said Jim Santella, the head trustee. “Once we get functioning, we’ll be able to plan a better schedule for fundraising,” Ken Connors, also a trustee, said. “The important thing here is community awareness.” “The importance of rebuilding for the post, as a pillar of the community, is getting back so we can support the local community,” agreed Poplaski. Santella played an instrumental role in planning the event. “When we first did all this work, we thought ‘hopefully the next generation will come,’” said Santella. It’s what the post members again wish for, now that they’ve rebuilt. Donations can be made to American Legion Raritan Post 23 at 81 Broad Street, Keyport, NJ 07735.

STANLEY &
CYSTIC FIBROSIS What You Need to Know About Both of Them
Meet Stanley Zolek, a nine-year-old Holmdel resident who is determined to make CF (Cystic Fibrosis) stand for CURE FOUND!
The strong team of “Stanley’s City Slickers” attend NYC Great Strides CF Walk.
STORY Susan Murphy
S
tanley Zolek lives in Holmdel with his parents, sevenyear-old sister Skylar-Rose, and three-year-old brother Sebastian. Stanley and Skylar enjoy riding their dirt bikes together and Stanley and Sebastian play cars, video games, and climb trees together. Just like many nineyear-olds Stanley loves playing with his Legos, army men and hanging with what he labels “his totally awesome family.” This young boy with the positive attitude, a ready smile, and an appearance of healthiness is not like other nine-yearolds. Stanley has Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and young adults in the United States. A defective gene causes his body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs his lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. These thick secretions also obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to help break down and absorb food. The mucus also can block the bile duct in the liver, eventually causing permanent liver damage. CF is a deceiving disease; so while Stanley looks healthy on the outside, inside his body there is a lot going on. Although Stanley’s parents, Dawn and Stan Zolek, knew they were both carriers of the defective CF gene when Dawn was pregnant, Stanley wasn’t diagnosed until he was twoweeks-old. “My husband and I were of course devastated when we heard the news that Stanley had CF, however we decided to take a pro-active approach from the beginning and really try to make something out of this card we were dealt. Our family immediately became involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, we networked with families who were also affected by this disease and launched an ‘awareness campaign’ through Stanley’s personal website www.ilovestanleynyc.com.”
Left to right: Skylar-Rose, Sebastian, and Stanley Zolek are siblings and friends.
Stanley Zolek and good friend and supporter Boomer Esiason of CBS.
When Stanley Zolek was younger, he was featured on a Times Square billboard stating his wish was to blow away Cystic Fibrosis.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
Each year, the NYC Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis is held to raise funds and awareness. The Zoleks attended their first walk in 2005 when Stanley, just 9-months-old, was asked to cut his first ribbon. At that time, the walk was held in uptown New York City with a little over 100 participants, and $125k was raised in donations. In 2006, the Zoleks moved the walk to Battery Park City where they had originally lived, and chaired the event for the next five years. “Our family knew there was a sense of community and strength in downtown after experiencing 9/11. We saw more opportunity to connect to the community and bring the awareness to the disease that was needed,” explained Mrs. Zolek. Within three years, the walk grew to include over 1,000 people. Today, Stanley is still the poster child cutting the ribbon and the Zoleks work very closely with the Foundation, families and the community as the “Family Ambassador.”
S
This year, the walk took place on June 2 and was very successful. Although the CF Great Strides walk is over, donations are always welcomed. According to the information on Stanley’s website, all donations will be credited to Stanley’s City Slickers and will be used effectively and efficiently for CF. More than 96 cents out of every dollar contributed is used to fund the vital programs of the CF Foundation. Year after year, committed and passionate family members and friends have helped the Zoleks with the CF awareness campaign and NYC Great Strides weekend. “Our strong team of ‘Stanley’s City Slickers’ has raised over $500k for CF and are determined to continue making ‘great strides’ for CF. Stanley’s health attributes a lot to the family and friend support we receive and we are so thankful. It takes a village to push through this and we are so fortunate to have a strong network,” said Mrs. Zolek.
SPECIALIZING IN
Wyndham & Wellington Place Sales & Rentals
Stanley’s daily routine is challenging and takes patience, time management due to the at-home treatments he needs, and lots of love and support from his family. Stanley needs to be very careful with germs and exposing himself to environments that can harm him. Since his body produces an abundance of mucus, germs stick to his lungs thus having a damaging irreversible effect on his lungs. Mrs. Zolek shared that every day, Stanley performs therapy on an airway clearance vest and inhales heavy antibiotics on his nebulizer three times a day. Since his pancreas is also affected, he needs to take over two dozen pills a day to help digest his food. Without these pancreatic enzymes he would not be able to absorb and digest his food. “Managing CF takes up a lot of time, which is challenging for an active nine-year-old.” Mrs. Zolek emphasized, “It is important for the public to know that CF does not receive any federal funding. The Foundation solely relies on our support to generate the awareness and funds needed to combat this disease. Due to this support, there have been huge advancements with research. In the 50’s, CF kids weren’t expected to live through elementary school. Today, because of your support, many people with the disease are living into their 30’s and beyond. The disease is also much more manageable today. A lot of the therapies which were originally required to be done in hospitals, are now being handled in the home.” The research and care supported by the Foundation has made a huge difference in extending the quality of life for those with CF. Over the past few years, the life expectancy for this disease has fortunately increased to the mid 30’s. “Over the past nine years, Stanley has struggled with this disease, however he handles CF in an optimistic way. Through his Public Service Announcements with CBS and Boomer Esiason, his billboards in Times Square and street marketing wild posting campaigns, Stanley is determined to make CF stand for CURE FOUND. His website has been the source of inspiration for many. Just recently a young man with CF from Thailand reached out to Stanley through his website. The connections being made are worldwide,” said Mrs. Zolek. Stan and Dawn Zolek offer this final thought about CF and their nine-year-old son Stanley, as well as the 30,000 other children and young adults. “With Cystic Fibrosis, your healthiest day was yesterday. But with Stanley, his happiest day is today.”

Keyport GardenWalk
Welcomes Thousands of Visitors
I
t is hard to believe only six months after Hurricane Sandy, Keyport’s popular GardenWalk welcomed approximately two thousand visitors from the tri-state area on June 8 and June 9. According to Keyport Garden Club President, Lois Farina Reilly, “The morning after Sandy hit, most of us in Keyport were in a state of shock, along with much of the Jersey Shore. Our residents and businesses then did what Keyport people do; they banded together, regrouped and began to cleanup and rebuild. And the Keyport Garden Club moved forward with plans for the second annual Keyport GardenWalk (KGW)”. Visitors biked and strolled to the 41 public and private gardens included in this year’s Keyport GardenWalk (KGW). According to KGW Chairperson, Clare Skeen, “It’s just remarkable that we had 11 more gardens than last year – particularly after Hurricane Sandy. Our Keyport gardeners are certainly “stronger than the storm.” According to Monmouth County Master Gardener, Anita Meeks, “Friends and I attended the Keyport Garden Walk today. IT WAS GLORIOUS!! From Rain Gardens, Community Gardens, municipal spaces and private gardens, each was wondrous in its own way! Owners at each private garden were there to guide and explain their visions and the steps in creation (before and after Sandy.) Hospitality and beauty at every stop…put this on your “must see” agenda for next year!” In addition to touring the gardens, visitors enjoyed live music, horticultural seminars, and pedicab rides – all compliments of the Keyport GardenWalk sponsors – Event Sponsors: Reedy International and The Garden Club of New Jersey, Inc.; Major Sponsors: Pine Belt Nissan of Keyport, Sea Grass Design and Landscape LLC, Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative (KBBC) and Trinity Restaurant; Supporters: NY/NJ Baykeeper, Espresso Joe’s and Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ices and Ice Cream; Contributors: Apollo Sewer & Plumbing, Check Electrical Corporation, Sovereign Santander Bank – Keyport Branch, Keyport Spanish American Club and Dearborn Market. “All visitors to KGW were greeted with a copy of the KGW Garden Guide and the Keyport Restaurant Guide. Many of the businesses and restaurants in town offered special menus and discounts for our visitors. Blue River Market offered a free raffle for KGW visitors as did the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative. We wanted our visitors to know they are welcome in Keyport anytime – not just for KGW” said Skeen.

Daddy Daughter Dance
Keyport Recreation Sponsors Second Annual Daddy Daughter Dance
K
eyport Recreation Commission sponsored its second annual Daddy Daughter Dance on May 31 at Keyport Central School. Last year, this event was attended by over 50 girls and their dads. This year, 140 registered for the special occasion, which was open to community children from Pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade. This year’s Luau theme meant bright dresses for the girls and floralprint shirts for the Dads. Upon entering, everyone received a yellow, pink, red, green, or blue lei to wear around their neck. A complimentary photo was taken of each “couple” by Collette Kennedy. The girls then made their way over to where several adults were crafting balloons into dogs, flowers and hats. Before or after getting their balloon creation, the girls could have their faces painted. The DJ, Sway J, played a variety of music that both the girls and their dads recognized and enjoyed. Smiles, laughter, and plenty of dancing continued throughout the evening. More Dads danced with their little girls than last year, and once they heard a song they remembered and liked, there was no stopping either of them! If the girls went off to talk or dance with their friends, the Dads took the opportunity to sit at the tables and socialize also. It appeared that both the Dads and their daughters were having a great time throughout their special night. Food was provided by the parents, and Stop ‘N Shop of Keyport donated cookies and brownies for the event. Members of the Keyport Recreation Commission who attended were President George Strang, Chairperson Christine Benett, Secretary Nancy Jones, Becky Kahane, Allison Sorokin, Ezra Hill, Annie McPeek, Councilwomen Joy-Michele Tomczak, Council Liaisons Sophia Lamberson and Kenneth McPeek, and Collette Kennedy. Keyport Recreation meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at Keyport Borough Hall.

Matawan Regional High School Hosts Relay For Life Walk
Story Jenna M. Dorsi
O
n June 7, Matawan Regional High School hosted a Relay for Life event. An overnight walkathon originally founded in 1985, proceeds raised go to the American Cancer Society.
Assistant principal Mike Wells was instrumental in bringing Relay for Life back to Matawan after a year-long absence. He was inspired after taking part in an autism walk last September, and decided to incorporate Relay for Life with the school’s Freshman Academy Service Project.
“It’s really about our students. A way for them to get involved and give back,” said Wells. “Educating students on prevention, and ways to avoid getting cancer,” was another reason Wells cited. Wells set a goal to raise $85,000, which he achieved the day of the walk. At the time of this printing, a total of $87,052.91 had been raised. “It’s been a nice experience,” said Wells of the event. Over 400 survivors, their friends and family, as well as MRHS students with school spirit attended, to comprise 41 teams. Entrants camped near the track, while a member from each team took turns walking. The age of participants ranged from small children through senior citizens.

Junior Liam Radvanski is a member of the MRHS Track and Field team, and participated in the Relay for Life. “I actually do have relatives affected with cancer, so that is a reason for me to walk, as well as for the school.” This was Hannah Nappi’s first Relay for Life event. The 10th grader said she decided to walk because “This is the first year Matawan’s having it [since I’ve been here], and my two aunts are survivors.” Meanwhile, Anna Kofman, also a student, was walking to support a friend who’d lost his mother to cancer. She’d raised almost $600 in a month of fundraising. Prepared with sleeping bags, most entrants planned on staying until the very end—the 2:30 a.m. closing ceremony. Food, live music, and DJ entertainment helped keep participants engaged all night. There were also other activities like free makeovers and face painting. Another happening note was the “Luminaria Ceremony,” which honored those lost to the disease.

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP OFFICIALLY TURNS ON STATE-OF-THE-ART 557,000 KWh SOLAR INSTALLATION
Panels power five municipal sites at no cost to taxpayers
I
n May, Aberdeen Township and Nexus Energy Solutions (NES) officially turned on the power at five township-owned sites, launching the operation of a state-of-the-art 557,000-KWh solar installation. Completed without expenditure of any municipal funds, the installation will operate under the terms of a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between the township and Nexus Energy Solutions. “It is an absolute thrill and honor to see this project go from conception to reality,” said Mayor Fred Tagliarini, who spoke at the May 7 ceremony along with Deputy Mayor Margaret Montone and Nexus project manager Roy Morales. “With the ceremonial switch turned on tonight, the Township Council and the Green Team Advisory Committee, which was formed to focus on sustainability across the township, can take great pride in seeing the fruits of our labor become reality.” “It is important to emphasize that in addition to its contribution to sustainability, this project was completed at no cost to taxpayers,” noted Montone. “It will also save the township an estimated $750,000 in energy costs over the

Three of the other sites are pumping stations at Riverdale Drive in the Cliffwood section, Noble Place in Strathmore and Greenwood Avenue in Cliffwood Beach, where open spaces have been fitted with ground-mounted solar panels. The final location at the Public Works complex on Lenox Road in Cliffwood Beach includes a combination of rooftop and canopy panels, the latter installed over recycling areas. Originally expected to be operational last fall, the project was delayed by the aftermath of superstorm Sandy. “The region’s infrastructure continues to rebound from Sandy,” noted Reycraft. “The start-up of the solar installation took a little longer than we anticipated, with JCP&L’s approval of the switch-over delayed by postSandy repair efforts.”

DEARBORN MARKET HOSTS AN EVENING With Wine Connoisseur Victor Rallo
D
earborn Market is a family-owned, full-service market and garden center that started in 1925 as a roadside farm stand. Today, Dearborn Market includes a 5,000 square foot delicatessen, gourmet kitchen, an 11,000 square foot state-ofthe-art greenhouse, a redesigned garden center, and a fresh bakery. This spring and summer they will be highlighting farming, food, and family – just as their grandparents did over 85 years ago. They will offer unique local products and authentic Italian foods, as well as offering workshops and seminars.
In keeping with this idea, Dearborn Market hosted “Italian Essentials: Wine and Entertaining with Victor Rallo” on June 6 in their garden center. Mr. Rallo, owner of Basil T’s Restaurant in Red Bank and Undici Taverna in Rumson, discussed his new book, “21 Wines,” which he co-authored with Anthony Verdoni, as well as sharing both of their favorite Italian wines and the best way to enjoy and entertain with them. Guests were able to sample Rose’, white and red wines, and taste an assortment of authentic Dearborn antipasti and cheeses. Italian Specialty baskets were raffled throughout the evening. Mr. Rallo and Mr. Verdoni’s book was available for purchase and following their discussion about the book, great wines, and many hints on combining the correct wine with a particular food, the authors signed the guests’ books.
DJ Luccarelli, Vice President of Dearborn Market, has known Mr. Rallo for over 20 years. He noted this was a nice social event and a chance to enjoy Italian food and wine. “Vic is doing really well and we are happy to have him stop by and share with our customers while launching his new book.” Mr. Rallo and Mr. Verdoni shared their ideas on pairing food and Italian wines, on the places deep in Italy where they have traveled to enjoy great food and wine, and details about the 21 Wines that left an impression on them during this last year. This coffee table book is detailed and tells about the production of the wines as well as listing the websites on where to find them. Both men emphasized that if you know your dinner guests well, you know the food and wine they like, so then it’s really up to you what to serve. “Step out of the box and don’t be afraid,” said Mr. Rallo. “The party takes off whether it’s red or white!”
Mr. Rallo shared that on July 6 he will host Eat! Drink! Italy! With Victor Rallo on public television. An exciting new venture for him and a great opportunity for those who will be tuning in.
Left to right: Victor Rallo and Anthony Verdoni, coauthors of 21 Wines, stopped by Dearborn Market on June 6, 2013 to promote their book, discuss fine wines and great Italian food, and share their stories about traveling through Italy.
