ummer is here and the livin’ is easy! What’s amazing about where we live is that there are so many fun things to do - it really is hard to pick and choose. One event every summer I attend, which is the grandest day of racing on the Jersey shore, is The $1,000,000 William Hill Haskell Invitational, held on July 27th at Monmouth Park. But if you don’t fancy horseracing, Community Magazine (CM) has compiled a slew of local events for you and your family this summer on page 36.

In our March 2014 edition of CM, we announced it was our 3rd year in business. So on June 12, 2014 – CM invited friends of the magazine to join us in celebrating our anniversary at Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro. It was an amazing event with so many people who have given us tremendous support throughout the years. We want to first thank Anthony Beshara, owner of Bella Vista Country Club, and his staff for accommodating us and our guests with a delicious spread and cocktails. We also want to thank everyone who attended, whether you are our advertisers & partners, and/or supporters – you are all our friends. Here are the many faces that we can’t show our gratitude enough to! Enjoy your summer!

Matawan Residents Organize Skate & Bike Rally LOCALS VIE FOR MATAWAN’S ATTENTION FOR SKATE PLAZA
STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN
O
n May 15, 2014, a revolution started in Matawan as skateboarders and bikers wearing black t-shirts with a question mark walked from the Matawan Police Station through the Henry Hudson trail all the way to the Community Center. Their goal: to get the attention of the Matawan community so a skate plaza can be built. The man who organized the mini parade is Bob Anfuso, a resident of Matawan for 40 years. To say that he is passionate about building a skate plaza for Matawan is an understatement. “We need to be leaders and take example of other towns where it has been successful and utilize other areas for these kids to ride,” said Anfuso. Anfuso also mentioned that he wants it to be safer for people to skate. While somebody could get hurt skating on the streets where a car can hit them, a skate plaza has a lesser chance of serious injuries. All who participated in the parade are fully dedicated to getting the skate plaza built. Anthony Princibe, a resident of Cliffwood Beach, has been skating for 10 years and would love a skate plaza in Matawan. “I think it’s a great idea” said Princibe. Skaters and bikers were not the only ones to join in the parade. A few parents participated as well, although they walked instead of riding. Kim Vitale and Sara Yuille agreed that a skate plaza for Matawan would be great for their children. “We want it really bad,” said Vitale. “It would be a blessing for the kids to have a place to skate closer to home” said Yuille.
10
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
In order for the skate plaza to be built, Anfuso met with the Community Center’s recreation committee members to at least discuss the plaza and what can be done to make the dream come alive. All he and skaters can do now is wait and see if the committee agrees.

Summer Travel: Be Prepared for Anything
WRITTEN BY DR. LISA GOLDING GRANADO OF IMMEDIATE CARE MEDICAL WALK-IN
CONGRATULATIONS! We made it through the winter, school is out, and finally the allergy season is winding down [for some of us anyway]. Now it’s time to welcome summer vacation, which means travel both local and/or abroad for many of us this year. Who doesn’t want to get away – after the winter we had! Before you pack up the kids and pets and head out – remember to take a little time to plan your pre-travel health checklist. Now is an important time to visit with your doctor before you make your trip. If you plan a local trip – then make sure your medical check-up is up to date –especially if you have a chronic illness – be sure to ask your doctor if you are fit enough to travel. None of us want to have a flare-up of a chronic illness while in another state or abroad. Patients with chronic heart and lung issues are especially vulnerable when traveling. Make sure you have enough medications to last for the duration of your trip. New state laws regarding controlled medications may limit [or prohibit] any refill that can be provided
in another state by another physician. Please ask your doctor before your trip – if it’s possible to provide you with a fresh refill of all of your medications. If you go camping, remember the emergency medical supplies: like sunblock, anti-inflammatory meds, bug bite barrier sprays, epi-pen, etc. Even If you travel abroad (most of the advice given above still applies) visit the CDC website [www.CDC.gov/travelers] to determine the necessary travel vaccines for the country you plan to visit. Some vaccination programs take months to go into effect – so plan ahead. This website is also an excellent resource for current traveler’s health advisories and tips for water and food safety, it should be your guide starting months before you travel. Also, contact your airline or carrier before you travel to determine their rules on how medication can be transported. Remember to make sure college physicals and school physicals are completed – long before September. Summer goes fast! We want our recent graduates to be prepared for the next chapter in their lives. At Immediate
Care Medical Walk-In our combined Urgent Care & Primary Care approach offers the flexibility to help patients manage their pretravel health checklist and quick school/ sports physicals – and I am happy to say we have been able to help many people just traveling through who forgot their meds or simply got sick while on vacation in our area. Whether you travel locally or abroad, or have a stable chronic illness or not, you should take the time to properly discuss an emergency plan with your family – especially the kids. They should know what to do if something unexpected happens. This is the best advice for their safety and yours. Enjoy your summer and best of health to you and your family! If you have questions on this or any other article, feel free to contact us Dr. Golding Granado at 732.264.5500 or visit our website at www.immcare.com.

From Saturday Night Live to Sailing the Seas
Holmdel Native Creates Business Into His Endless Summer STORY RUSSELL CARSTENS
Tracey Dell, a Holmdel resident, was a touring audio engineer during the eighties, when he worked the soundboards at clubs like Asbury Park’s Stone Pony.
I
n 1987, he received a call from NBC and took their offer to work on the set of Saturday Night Live. He mixed sound on the floor as an audio assistant while “putting mics on the talent,” and performing other sound-related tasks. He remained with SNL until 2003 and left NBC in 2005. Dell’s interest in sailing began in the early eighties when his friend Carl “Tinker” West took him for a casual sail. Tinker taught him the ropes and it became a hobby. After deciding to leave the lucrative but hectic pace of the television world behind, Dell decided to give the sailing business a try. His wife Kathleen books all reservations, and the company and Kathleen D catamaran are named after her. Located conveniently in Baker’s Marina on the Bay in Highlands, Kathleen D offers several types of sails. A private charter can be booked for up to twenty people. Although it is mostly couples they get their business from, they’re occasionally approached by an individual who wants to experience sailing. Private events are also held, consisting mostly of groups of friends or wine tasting groups, boat clubs or church congregations. More recently, memorial ash scattering services have become a regular part of their business. Dell occasionally takes friends from his television days out, who may bring along colleagues from the entertainment business. SNL actor Kenan Thompson and his wife have joined Dell for a sail. Sails set out at six thirty in the evening and return around nine o’clock. This leaves guests with time to get dinner and enjoy the night ahead. Although he doesn’t have a favorite type of sail, Dell particularly enjoys those that focus on sunsets, noting the “spectacular” displays seen from Sandy Hook Bay. During that time there are very few other boats on the water, making the experience more private. Dell likens sailing to “floating on air.” Dell says, “In our business you see the best side of humanity,” while guests on the boat are relaxing and enjoying themselves. Sailing is about relaxing and taking in the

The company is open to offering new services in the future, and it has teamed up with the Monmouth County Park System for stargazing sails this summer. A representative from the parks department will be on board to lead the event and point out constellations and other treats in the sky. A deep thinker, Dell is looking forward to smoothly riding out the rest his life in contemplation on the water. He says, “Being in television and rock and roll are fun, but this is just like taking the fun business and turning it into the endless summer.”

More than 85 guests enjoyed a very special afternoon. A hot cup of tea, complete with sandwiches, sweets, scones and Devonshire cream were served, while many brought their own cups and saucers and wore their afternoon hats. There was plenty of Downton Abbey trivia, a fashion show featuring costumes from the 1920’s, presented by Jackie LaPolla, Keyport Librarian - and lovely gift baskets donated by the many volunteer groups and friends of the church. Everyone had a wonderful time and raised funds for a very worthy cause.

KEYPORT KIWANIS ONE DAY SERVICE EVENT IS A SUCCESS STORY SUSAN MURPHY PHOTOS KEYPORT KIWANIS
E
ach year Keyport Kiwanis plans a One Day Service project and this year it was working on a home in Cliffwood. In this instance, the project was set for May 3 and completed on May 10. A total of 37 volunteers put in 196 hours during that time. The volunteers included
Keyport Kiwanis members, M.A.S.T. Key Club members, and a member of the Jersey Shore Work Camp.
Work to be done consisted of painting the exterior of the home including the trim
and shutters, breaking down the front steps, removing the bricks and disposing of the concrete. The front yard was also raked. Paint for the home was supplied by the Jersey Shore Workcamp and the volunteers provided the labor. Hand tools, gloves, ladders, paint brushes, and rollers were provided by members of the Keyport Kiwanis. The food for all of the volunteers was provided by the Kiwanis Club of Keyport.
Coordinator of the One Day Service Event was Keyport Kiwanis member Martin
Ciaurro. He was pleased with the results. “We had a really great group of kids come to help us from M.A.S.T. The first day we had 15 kids. It was great how the kids and adults got together for a common goal to help the people in the area,” he said.
Martin has been with the group for about a year. He said there are a tremendous
amount of houses in this general area that need some type of work done. The One Day Service Project is usually done once a year. As Coordinator of this year’s One Day Service Event, Martin said he would like to see the Keyport Kiwanis Club become more involved and try doing these types of projects once a month or every other month. “We could target different homes in the area, such as those from Union Beach to Port Monmouth as well as Aberdeen and Keansburg.” He said that by talking with representatives from Jersey Shore Workcamp, local churches, or organizations, they could locate the homes that are in dire need.

eyport First Aid Squad was just presented with the Snowflake Award, a special recognition given to an organization by NY/NJ Blood Services for continuing to hold their planned blood drive despite exceptionally bad weather. The squad was the only collection site in New Jersey to move ahead with its blood drive during a January snowstorm. According to Lynne Ross, account manager at NY/NJ Blood Services, “Winter donors braved the bad weather, providing 41 pints of blood and helping as many as 123 patients. The winter holiday season and summer are when the blood supply dips significantly. We depend on groups like the Keyport First Aid Squad that run drives to help us get through those especially difficult times of the year.” The award was given at the location’s most recent blood drive on June 9 to Ruth Grabowski, a past president of Keyport First Aid Squad and secretary of the Keyport First Aid Auxiliary. “The snowflake award will be the second award I have earned from the blood bank,” says Grabowski. “In New Jersey, only 2 percent of the population donates blood. The blood bank is always amazed at the number of donors I get from our small town. We have collected a total of 760 pints of blood since our first drive in 2010, which has helped about 2,300 people. The June 9 drive collected 56 pints.” The next drive will be September 29, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information, visit www. keyportfirstaid.org.

Summer Safety Tips:
Keeping Your Kids Happy & Hydrated PROVIDED NOAH CARPENTER
The summer is a special time of year for all of us living along the Jersey Shore. For children, the summer represents so much more: freedom. Not only are children free from homework, classrooms and bus rides; they are free to play outside as long as they want. While they enjoy this time, it’s important to make sure your children stay hydrated in order to avoid illness due to dehydration. Marc Milano, M.D., Medical Director of Bayshore Community Hospital’s Emergency Department shares his expertise on keeping kids safe while having fun in the sun. “Water accounts for 60 percent of body weight,” Dr. Milano said. “It also plays a critical role in just about every bodily process.” Nearly everything you do during the day— typing, talking, walking, and even eating—requires energy. That energy, in turn, generates heat, which escapes the body through perspiration. Simply put, perspiration is how your body stays cool. Under normal conditions, we all lose water through perspiration, and other bodily functions. In a healthy person, this water is replaced by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. “When your children are playing outside for long periods of time and not drinking enough
water, dehydration occurs.” Dr. Milano said. Symptoms to look out for with dehydration include thirst, irritability, fatigue, dry mouth, and dizziness. “In cases of mild dehydration, I recommend my patients simply rehydrate by drinking fluids,” said Dr. Milano. If you have trouble getting your kids to drink water “Try mixing your child’s water 50/50 with their favorite juice - like apple, orange or grape.” Dehydration should be treated as soon as possible, to avoid further injury or complications. If your child is exhibiting any symptoms of dehydration and symptoms do not improve after drinking fluids, it may be time to consult a medical expert. The Pediatric Care Center at Bayshore, part of Meridian Pediatric Network, is here to help, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Pediatric Care Center provides enhanced pediatric services in an environment designed for kids. Additionally, the Center is staffed by in-house pediatricians, board certified emergency medicine physicians, and magnet-recognized pediatric nurses so parents can have peace of mind knowing their children are in the most capable hands.

Partnered With Corporate Resource Services For A Charity Golf Outing At Bella Vista Country Club STORY KAITLYN ANNESS
W
atching NFL Hall-of-Famer Dan Marino line up his golf swing, the look on his face isn’t any less intense than when millions watched him line up his passes perfectly over and over again.
But a smile appears when you ask the NFL great, who spent his entire 17-year career as a quarterback with the Miami Dolphins, about the Dan Marino Foundation for autism. The now 22-year-old foundation has brought joy to Marino’s life, and the lives of those he has been able to help. “When you see a family who says what we’re doing has really helped them, I know we’re doing something right,” Marino said, in between swings at June’s charity outing held at Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro. The Dan Marino Foundation was founded in 1992, after Marino’s son was diagnosed with autism when he was 2-years-old. Now at 25-years-old, Marino’s son is a DJ in Florida and helping as much as possible with the foundation. As golfers lined up for a chance to play with Marino at the tenth hole, Marino said he’s most excited right now about a new program with the Dan Marino Foundation that fosters secondary education and job development for people 18-24 in all areas of the autism spectrum. “We wanted to do something to help kids have the same changes our son had in life,” Marino said. The golf outing was sponsored by Corporate Resource Services, a publicly
traded company that focuses on staffing needs of everything from Fortune 500 companies to small storefronts. Marino partnered with Corporate Resource Services two years ago, using his knowledge of business and sales to boost CRS credibility and revenue. The company’s CEO John Messina said it has definitely worked. “Things are going great with Dan,” Messina said. “He’s opening doors left and right. Now he’s working more with our sales force than he was in the past.” Marino said the relationship has worked well for everyone. “They have been big supporters, and I feel like I’ve helped them as well.” Corporate Resource Services now has 240 offices in more than 35 states, and over 1,000 direct employees. Messina said they continue to see revenue growth.

P
icture perfect weather and 35 gardens attracted 2,300 visitors to Keyport on June 7 and June 8 for the third annual Keyport GardenWalk (KGW). The weekend’s festivities included “Garden Talks” each morning, live music, pedicab rides, en plein air artists,
Monmouth County Helpline Desk and, of course, the gardens – all free. “We had visitors from all over the tri-state area”, said KGW Chairperson, Clare Skeen. “Keyport GardenWalk has definitely become a model for garden tourism in the state”. “We had so many positive comments from visitors about our gardens, the graciousness of our gardeners and the town of
Keyport. It was a great weekend”. Ann Boyce, President of the Keyport Garden Club said, “The 35 gardens on the 2014 Keyport GardenWalk were a mix of many different styles and all contributed to another very successful Garden Walk for this year”. The two day event, now in its third year, featured nine first time KGW participants this year and live music provided by Sky Road, Frank and Bill, Dave Reilly, The Porch Players at Nora’s and Rose Ann Lloyd. According to Keyport Garden Club Vice President, Diane Calabrese, “The visitors were excited and inspired by our seminars. The visitors who came through our personal garden were so cheerful and enthusiastic about gardening, composting, and our rain barrel and in awe that the KGC is able to host this event at no cost to visitors”. Keyport GardenWalk, one of many projects of the Keyport Garden Club, was possible because of the generosity of the following businesses and organizations: Event Sponsors –

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Jacquie is donating her time, talent and energy to help her fellow New Jerseyans,” said OPC Founder Lt. Col. Jim Sfayer, USMC Ret. “We’re hoping this event raises awareness that the rebuilding effort is far from over, as well as the much needed funds to make it a reality.” Prior to The Voice, Jacquie was an aspiring singer/songwriter and performed with Rockit, a performance program run out of the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ. Even then, charitable events were close to her heart. Jacquie did not hesitate when asked to join Operation Provide Comfort in raising money to help the residents of Union Beach as they continue rebuilding their homes and their lives. “Being in a position to help a community in my home state is a privilege for me,” said Ms. Lee. “Knowing I can share my talent to help others and raise awareness is one of the incredible benefits of participating in The Voice show and summer tour.” Union Beach, NJ is a small borough of mostly single-family homes (which are the owners’ primary residences). It is on the Raritan Bay, nestled between Keyport and Keansburg. Union Beach sustained devastating damage from Super Storm Sandy. Nearly 200 homes needed to be demolished, another 500 took on 5’ of water, and another 1,000 had up to 3’ of water damage. Police, Fire, Emergency Services, and the school all sustained significant damage to buildings and equipment. Sadly, the task of rebuilding is not close to accomplished. OPC currently welcomes event sponsors and donations for gift baskets to be auctioned prior to the event. Interested parties may contact Diana Piotrowski, OPC administrator at 732.946.3474 or globalinfo1@verizon.net. Matawan Boy Scouts Spend Day at Sandy Hook Troop 66 of Matawan spent June 7, 2014 at Ft. Hancock, Sandy Hook participating in the Oceanography Merit Badge program, run by the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium. Over a dozen Scouts had a fun hands-on ocean experience exploring the salt marsh and discovering why the ocean is important. The boys seined with homemade plankton nets in Sandy Hook Bay, collecting sea lettuce, hermit crabs, cone jellies, and mud snails. After a picnic lunch, the Scouts participated in activities such as studying waves & currents, viewing exotic sand samples, performing laboratory experiments, measuring water quality, and collecting and identifying plankton. Troop 66 was founded in 1957 in Matawan, NJ and provides an active year round outdoor program for boys in 5th grade and above. Scoutmaster Bob Shea has lead the Troop for over 30 years and, along with his Assistant Scoutmasters, reinforces the ideals put forth in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Troop 66 gives back to the local community by conducting food drives, participating in civic events, volunteering at municipal events and completing Eagle projects to assist local organizations and clubs. Keyport Library
Launches Event Series STORY LIZZ DINNIGAN
In an effort to draw in new faces, both children and adults, Keyport Public Library launched a series of new events and programs in the fall that has been so successful, new concepts are being developed for this summer. “We are expanding our event roster to get more people to integrate the library into their everyday lives,” says Jackie LaPolla, library director. Ideas for the summer include family movie nights, cursive writing class, book club for kids, seed library to complement the outdoor READ Garden, Capri Sun wallet-making for tweens, seasonal crafts, hair and nail wraps, and an evening story hour hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Keyport. Events Coordinator Chris Menapace says the most successful ongoing event has been the LEGO Club, which is held on the second Tuesday of each month but will have special summer hours. Other staples include monthly Pokemon Card Trading and weekly preschool StoryTime with an accompanying craft. Recent adult workshop themes have included Aromatherapy, Meet the Authors and Edgar Allen Poe. “We also have an exciting new partnership with Bayshore Family Success Center, a division of the YMCA,” says Menapace. “They’re going to bring free-to-us programs, the first of which was an Afternoon Teatime. There will be a Family BINGO Night on every fourth Friday from July to September.” For more information, visit www.keyportlibrary.org today!

Hazlet Fire Companies Donate Highway Collections To Important Foundation STORY SUSAN MURPHY
On the morning of May 31, 2014, members of the Hazlet Fire Department, which includes Hazlet Fire Company No. 1, North Centerville Fire Company No. 1, and West Keansburg Fire Company No. 1, held two highway collections. One was held at Route 36 and Laurel Avenue; the other at Route 35 and Poole Avenue. Just some of those who assisted in the collection drive included Captain Joseph Schroeck, Hazlet Fire Inspector John Beslanovitz, Bill McCarron, Doug Granai, Mason Sheenan, Mike Vamos, Andy Bace, Matt Beslanovitz, Pat Fox, Scott Aagree, Tom Hyer, and Bill Brooks from Bayshore Hospital. Hazlet Township Fire Inspector John Beslanovitz said the monies donated by motorists will be sent to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation which helps America’s military heroes regain their independence. According to the website, the firefighter community gives back to catastrophically injured heroes through fundraising events and mentorship initiatives. Funds raised by Firefighters for America’s Bravest supports the Foundation’s programs, including Building for America’s Bravest. Each home is custom designed to address the unique needs of each individual. Fire Inspector Beslanovitz said, “We collected $3,200 from donations made by motorists on these two highways. This will greatly help the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. An additional $800 was collected from local businesses and fire companies.”

Children of Home Away From Home Academy Summer Camp are excited to support The Ashley Lauren Foundation - hands up for helping!
What better way to kick off summer camp than to help other children in need? Children helping children is an invaluable lesson taught at Home Away From Home Academy. When the Colts Neck based Ashley Lauren Foundation approached the private academy to host a summer time toy drive, there was no question that the school would be willing participants. Phyllis Visone, owner, says, “Having a child go out to purchase a toy for another child in need is one of the best lessons that can be taught.” The private academy is recognized often for their philanthropic work throughout the school year, and this summer will be no different. Carmine Visone, owner, says, “The most important thing here is teaching the children that it is just as important to give as it is to receive”. The Ashley Lauren Foundation is an independent, New Jersey based non-profit organization, working hands on with each family. They depend on the support of the community-at-large in order to provide immediate relief for the daily burdens thrust upon those who are battling pediatric cancer. Their SummerFest event will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 and was created to allow the children to have a ‘day away’ to enjoy swimming, entertainment, games, rides, activities, food, and more. The toys collected will furnish a Toy Room, from which the children can pick a gift to take home with them. The reward is to see the smiles on the faces of each child who, for a short time, can forget about their illness and just ‘be kids’. The toy drive at Home Away From Home Academy will take place during the month of July as part of the summer camp program for infants through third grade. The effort put forth by the Academy to help others is truly inspiring and their work will continue to assist worthy causes each year. Carmine says, “It is the generosity of our parents supporting these events that make our success possible”. For more information on the Academy, please call 732.290.0033 or visit www.hafha.com.
