Keyport GardenWalk
A Smashing Success!
THE WEEKEND of June 6 and 7, 2015, over 2,600 visitors from all over the tri-state area came to Keyport, to enjoy the 38 public and private gardens participating in Keyport GardenWalk. Celebrating its fourth year, Keyport GardenWalk is a free walking/biking tour of gardens in a town that is only one square mile. Keyport GardenWalk is one of many endeavors of the Keyport Garden Club. The Keyport Garden Club has four MGs – Dennis McNamara, Kathleen McNamara, Nancy Carew, Clare Skeen and one honorary MG – Ed Carew. KGW weekend features the gardens, of course, but also offers free GardenTalks each morning in addition to a MG Helpline tent manned by our wonderful Monmouth County MGs. We modeled KGW after Garden Walk

Buffalo – the largest garden tourism event in the US. Anyone in Keyport who has a garden they are proud of is welcome to participate. We are committed to keeping KGW a completely free event – we want everyone to be able to enjoy our gardens. It is a huge undertaking but we have fantastic members in our Club and a community that seems to be really into gardening. The variety and quality of the gardens is appreciated by our many visitors. One of the highlights of this year’s KGW was a living roof on a backyard shed. Very cool. Next year's 5th annual Keyport GardenWalk is scheduled for June 4 and June 5, 2016. Keyport Central School Students Participate in Young Authors Night
ON JUNE 2, 2015 more than forty students from the Keyport Central School participated in Keyport’s Young Authors Night at Barnes and Noble in Holmdel. While the fundraising book fair has turned into an annual event to benefit the Central School, this was the first time the students read their original writing pieces aloud at the event. From kindergarten students sharing “Their News” to original poetry from the
eighth grade, all the volunteer students had their moment in the spotlight to shine, and shine they did! The students took the stage and shared their personal work with confidence and enthusiasm. With over a hundred and fifty parents, family members, and Central School staff members in attendance, it was a great success! Coupled with the student authors was former Harlem Globetrotter, current actor,

and author Luis Da Silva, Jr. Luis is the author and illustrator of his first book, A Boy Named Boo. Luis has a really positive and enthusiastic nature and quickly engaged the students and families present as he read his publication aloud and then shared the message with the children to always keep believing in their dreams. Afterward, Luis was on hand to sign autographs and provided support and feedback to the student authors.
KENNETH EDWARD BYLES, 18, of Union Beach has earned his Eagle Scout Rank on May 31, 2015. For his Eagle Rank Project, Kenneth had chosen the Keyport First Aid. The project consisted of painting the complete outside of the Keyport First Aid building, windows and doors and also redoing the flower beds to beautify the building. Kenneth loves to help his community and friends and will do anything to help one in need. Kenneth volunteered during Hurricane Sandy at Memorial School, Gateway Church at Union Beach Borough Hall and the American Red Cross. Kenneth is also a 2014 graduate of American Legion Boys

BUSTER is a 5-year-old, 32 pound Welsh Corgi. He is friendly and a real character. He has basic training, but needs a little work on manners. His foster family says he is a great dog to have around and well behaved. He gets along well with other dogs. Buster is undergoing treatment for Heartworm. He is part way through the treatments and Castle of Dreams will continue to pay for treatments until he tests Heartworm negative. If interested in adopting Buster you will have to agree to bring him to Sayrebrook Veterinary Hospital, in Sayreville, once a month for treatments and for follow up blood work. He has one or two more monthly treatments and then will need blood work in at three and six months. Once he tests negative for Heartworm, he is cured but should be kept on monthly heartworm medication. If you’re interested in adopting Buster, visit our website at www.castle-of-dreams. com. BANJO is an energetic, spirited 3 ½ year old Catahoula mix who was raised on a couple acres along with two cats, a Pekingese, and a mini-pig. She was trained both on leash and off, is house trained and knows the basic commands of sit, stay, come, off, and paw. Banjo was crate-trained and tolerates this well, but this was only used as necessary and not daily. Banjo is protective of her house and yard and is an excellent alarm dog. She is friendly and loyal to family and close friends, but is reserved and nervous with small children and strangers. Banjo likes running free in the yard but also is good company on hikes and walks. She enjoys apples and carrots for treats, Nylabone chew toys, and fetching sticks. She does like to cuddle but gets anxious when hugged or when her ears are touched. Banjo needs an owner experienced with big dogs. She would make an excellent companion for an active adult or couple without children. If you’re interested in adopting Banjo, visit our website at www. castle-of-dreams.com. Shelter dogs aren’t broken, they’ve simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human, we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write, the ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Don’t pity a shelter dog, adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness by your side. - DogsRule.com Visit www.castle-of-dreams.com today to adopt your new best friend!

An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on June 14, 2015, for Brandon Bennett, son of Daryl and Marianne Bennett of Hazlet. Brandon, a member of BSA Troop 137 in Hazlet, became the 75th Eagle Scout in Troop 137’s history. Additionally, Brandon became the 60th scout from Cub Scout Pack 137 in Hazlet, to become an Eagle Scout. On his journey to become an Eagle Scout, Brandon earned 49 merit badges and all four Religious Awards for Boy Scouts of the Catholic Faith (Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei as a Cub Scout; Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII as a Boy Scout). Scoutmaster Joe Horan was the Master of Ceremonies for the Court of Honor. Fr. Mark Devlin of Holy Family R.C. Church, Union Beach, gave the Invocation. Members of the Order of the Arrow Ceremonies Team from Na Tsi Hi Lodge 71 performed a Four Winds Ceremony for Bennett, recognizing his achievement. Bennett, himself, has been a member of the OA Ceremonies Team since 2012. Eagle Scout Mike Donahue read the Charge of the Eagle Scout Badge and led Bennett in his rededication to the Scout Oath and the Eagle Scout Promise. Brandon’s mother was given the honor of pinning the Eagle Scout medal to his uniform, and his father presented him with his Eagle Scout Certificate. Bennett, in turn, honored his parents by pinning miniature Eagle Parent pins on each. Brandon also recognized Tom Santoro, Jr. as his mentor, the person who most influenced his scouting career. Brandon’s project was to design and build four picnic tables with attached benches and two additional benches to create a safe seating area for students waiting for parents near the parking lot of St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel, that could also be utilized as a picnic area for high school seniors. In his personal remarks, Brandon expressed his gratitude for the caring leaders, scouts, friends and family that assisted him on his journey to become an Eagle Scout, as well as those who took part in his Eagle Scout project. His advice to younger scouts was, “Don’t procrastinate. The journey to Eagle is long and tough, and each scout can get there if he perseveres. But it does take time and commitment. Don’t let it slip away, because it is worth the challenge.” Bennett, 18, graduated from St. John Vianney High School, on June 6, 2015, and will begin college in the fall. He plans to remain active with Troop 137 as an assistant leader. His career goal is to become a CPA.

WHOLETRITION OPENS NEW FACILITY IN MORGANVILLE Certified Holistic Health Coach & Clinical Nutritionist Alesha Lazan, is pleased to announce the grand opening of her new Wholetrition health facility located at 479 Route 79 in Morganville. The 1,200 square foot new location will include a full gym, group classes, and nutritional counseling. The health facility will also host monthly health & wellness events. “I believe in bio individuality, which means, no one diet works for everyone. Everyone is different and my job is to find the right one for you,” says Alesha Lazan MS, CHHC. Lazan shares details about Wholetrition and why her program stands out. “Wholetrition is unique in the sense that we don’t believe in the ‘one size fits all’ approach. Meal plans are customized to fit the needs of the client. I am also not just a nutritionist, but I am a coach. I help my clients throughout the whole process. I am not a quick fix program either. I teach my clients how to live a lifestyle and feel healthy. There is no need to obsess over calorie counting and the scale number - how do you feel on the inside? How are your clothes fitting you? Weight does not indicate health, but when one is healthy they drop down to a healthy weight. I also exercise with my clients. I believe exercise and nutrition go hand in hand. My exercise classes are different because they incorporate a burst training/interval training method. This type of exercise has proven to burn fat and build muscle. As long as the client is committed, then I am committed to their success. I think that is something that makes me stand out – because I genuinely care about my clients.” Ever since Lazan was a child she has had stomach issues. As she got older, especially during her college years, these issues worsened due to poor nutrition and an unhealthy lifestyle. Tiredness, headaches, and gastrointestinal problems were constant. After college she worked for a clinical nutritionist who found out through an elimination diet that Lazan had food allergies, leaky gut, and high cortisol levels. She began making better choices and totally changed her lifestyle around. Her personal journey has led her on a path to helping others. “Most people don’t know what it’s like to really feel good. My job is to help people figure out what works for their body and put them on a sustainable plan that can be followed for life,” said Lazan. There are different wellness programs from which a client can choose. In all of the programs, clients learn how to feed their cells the right nutrients; renew their metabolism; improve digestion; shed extra weight; and restore energy. Some of the specifics in Wholetrition in 12 are a low glycemic nutrition plan; healthy meal ideas; weekly interval training; and a weekly seminar that Lazan notes has become a type of support group. “We talk about different topics regarding food. We also are there just to support one another and understand we are not alone in this journey.” Lazan said she has a basic “diet” plan that she starts each client on. “From there we see what the progress is, are their symptoms improving, are they losing weight, etc. That determines where I go from there.” There are also three and six month programs that are available just for nutrition counseling. The three and six month programs do not include exercise. Lazan invites you to the new location to meet her and see the facility! For full details about Wholetrition, visit wholetrition.com or call Alesha Lazan at 732.896.6898 and stop in at your convenience.

KEYPORT TOWNWIDE SCAVENGER HUNT STORY LIZ Z DINNIGAN
THE THIRD INCARNATION of the Keyport Central School PTO’s Townwide Scavenger Hunt & Ice Cream Party Fundraiser raised a couple hundred dollars, and 18 families competed to win gift card prizes of $50, $25 and $25, respectively. The group met at the school cafeteria, and at promptly 5:45 p.m. all the teams departed and had one hour to complete the hunt and have all riddles answered. Of the 20 tasks, half were photos that had to be taken with the team and half were questions, but all shared a common “Numbers” theme. Here are some examples: 1. What are the numbers on the tall red and black buoys in the Ye Cottage Inn parking lot? 2. How many teeth are on only the upper jaw of the shark protruding out of Keyport Fishery? 3. How many silver fish are on the new mosaic bench at Beach Park? 4. Take a team photo by a public clock with Roman Numerals 5. Take a photo of the Century Home of Keyport plaque for any house built between 1836 and 1852.

It is that time of year when we want to remind people about the dangers of leaving their pets in parked cars. Leaving a pet inside a car for a few minutes while you run out for a quick errand might seem harmless enough, but when the weather gets warmer it can be deadly. Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. It is important to note that rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car. It takes only minutes to save a life. Here is how you can help a pet left in a hot car. Take down the car's make, model and license-plate number. If there are businesses nearby, notify their managers or security guards and ask them to make an announcement to find the car's owner. If the owner can't be found, call the non-emergency number of the local police or animal control and wait by the car for them to arrive. You never know where you may see a pet in potential distress, so you will need to be ready to call for help. Gather essential telephone numbers and have them on hand. You’ll want to have your local animal control agency's number and the police department's non-emergency number so you can quickly report the situation. Keep these numbers in your car's glove compartment or programmed into your phone. There are other ways to help too. Know the law. NJ state statutes 4:22-17a.3 and 4:22-26c state that you cannot "leave an animal unattended in a vehicle under inhumane conditions adverse to the health or welfare of the living animal or creature". There are even some municipalities in NJ that have strengthened their local ordinances to include specific temperatures. Get informed by learning if your town has a specific law about referring to unattended pets in cars. If your town does not have a stronger ordinance than the state law prohibiting leaving pets in parked cars, contact your local representatives or attend a town hall meeting to start lobbying for one. You can also get involved by asking local store managers, shopping malls, restaurants and other businesses to post signs asking customers not to leave their pets in their cars while shopping or dining. The Humane Society of the United States’ hot car flyer can be distributed, which spells out the dangers of leaving pets in parked cars on their website. Another way to stay committed and aware is to sign our pledge that you will not leave your dog or other pet in a parked car. Then, share it with friends, along with tips on what to do if you see a pet in a parked car. Practice basic summer safety, never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time. FREE Workout Group in the Bayshore Area!
No Excuse Mom Hazlet members pose post-race at a local Mudderella they participated in together as a team.
A FREE OPPORTUNITY is out there for all women who want to get in shape! The group, No Excuse Mom, works out at Veterans Memorial Park in Hazlet on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. and Mondays at 10:00 a.m. The group is comprised of working and stay-at-home mothers who want to meet other mothers/caregivers, make lasting connections with one another and their children while getting in shape. The group is not just for moms - being a current mom or even a biological mom is NOT a requirement. They are a community of women, adoptive moms, potential moms, fur-moms and everyone in between that want to encourage all women to make health and fitness a non-negotiable priority in their lives because health begins at home. Everyone has the power to influence many people in their lives through their actions. This is not only about moms, it is a movement. No Excuse Mom is for everyone. The group, part of a nonprofit organization created by controversial fit mom Maria Kang, which is 1 of over 300 groups in 25 countries that started this past year thanks to the “no excuse” message, is led by Vanessa Lynn Campos of Hazlet. Ms. Campos said, “Our free workouts include tips for how they can overcome excuses and get in shape this summer. Our organization has an online support group with an international community of over 40,000 women. We are 100% non-profit, and promote fitness through healthy lifestyle changes, including eating clean and exercising consistently. We do not promote fad diets, pills, restriction or paid exercise programs.” No Excuse Mom Hazlet currently has 225 members in their online group and their workouts bring anywhere from 3-15 moms and their children. They did a local Mudderella as a team and will be running a Rugged Maniac obstacle course race in July! They also host mom's night out/non-workout events, including a recent Paint Night. For the one-hour workout, all you need to bring is a mat, a pair of light dumbbells and some water. Dress comfortably and bring your children! Appropriate for any fitness level. FOR MORE INFORMATION, you can contact Vanessa@noexcusemom.com or join the Facebook Group Page - No Excuse Mom Hazlet facebook.com/ groups/noexcusemomhazlet

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP ANNOUNCES SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR AREA BUSINESSES AND GROUPS AT 2015 TOWN-WIDE ABERDEEN DAY FESTIVITIES ABERDEEN MAYOR FRED TAGLIARINI AND THE ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP COUNCIL are pleased to announce that sponsorships and a variety of other opportunities are now available for local businesses and organizations for the fourth annual town-wide Aberdeen Day celebration on Saturday, September 26 at Matawan Regional High School and various locations around town.
Aberdeen Pre-School Announces Inaugural
5K Run/Walk
No child should feel left out on the playground. Unfortunately, this is not always the truth for children with special needs. The Cambridge Park Pre-School PTO and Cambridge Park Playground Sub-Committee located in Aberdeen Township’s mission is to build a playground so that children of all abilities can play and socialize without limits. The group has announced their inaugural 5K Run/ Walk to be held on Saturday, September 26, 2015 (on Aberdeen Day) with a start time of 8:45 a.m. Participants should meet at the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station in Commuter Lot 4 on Atlantic Avenue and Harrel Street. This event aims to raise money to fund a new state-of-the-art playground that would benefit all children, but specifically those five and under, as well as children with disabilities. Cambridge Park Pre-School is unique in that it is the only preschool in the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District for children with special needs. The Cambridge Park Playground Committee is dedicated to providing a safe place to play and learn for children of all abilities. Educational research proves that play is imperative to promote both physical and academic development. Please help them in reaching their goal! Entry fees are $25 prior to September 5, 2015 and $35 after. For more information and to register, visitwww. cambridgepark5k.org.
Since the inception of the town-wide format, Aberdeen Day has grown in popularity, with increased participation at both the high school and shopping center locations, including the food festivals hosted by DeMarcos Catering & Gourmet Deli and Livoti’s Old World Market. This year’s event will start with a movie in the park on Friday evening, September 25 at Guisti Park in Cliffwood (in the event of rain, the movie will be held at Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School). Saturday’s festivities will kick-off with the Cambridge Park 5k Run/Walk to benefit the Cambridge Park Elementary Preschool. It will be followed by the family fishing contest at Cliffwood Beach, which leads into the traditional celebration at Matawan Regional High School, special business-sponsored events at shopping centers and other locations on Routes 34 and 35, and the Aberdeen’s Got Talent contest at the AMF Center on Route 34. Following the successful introduction of trolley service last year, Aberdeen Day will once again offer free transportation between venues and the overflow parking lot at the Aberdeen-Matawan train station. Additionally, Aberdeen Day 2015 will for the first time feature free circus performances by the New Jersey Circus Center at Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School on Matawan Ave. Performances will take place three times throughout the day. Food trucks and other vendors will be positioned outside the school during all performances. Circus sponsorships are available. “The Township Council is proud to provide this fun-filled activity at a new Aberdeen Day event venue,” said Councilman Greg Cannon. “This promises to delight residents of all ages.” With multiple levels of sponsorship and participation programs ranging in price from $50 to $1,000, opportunities exist for businesses of all sizes and budgets at a variety of venues. “Sponsorship of Aberdeen Day offers local businesses and charitable groups the opportunity to introduce themselves to the thousands of residents of all ages from Aberdeen and surrounding communities who participate in this annual event,” said Aberdeen Recreation Director Jim Colabelli. High School sponsorship packages priced from $250 to $1,000 offer exposure prior to and during the municipality’s annual celebration. The $1,000 Platinum package, for example, includes mentions on the township website, a lawn sign at the high school, press releases, and T-shirt advertising. The $650 Gold sponsorship includes mentions on the website, a lawn sign at the high school and T-shirt advertising, while the $250 Silver package offers exposure on the website and a lawn sign at the high school. Businesses and crafters can exhibit at the High School for $50. The venue fee for food vendors is $100, while volunteer, entertainment and youth groups can participate free of charge. Outside of the High School, merchants can participate in storefront events for $50 per location or opt for sponsorship opportunities ranging from $75 for T-shirt advertising, to $150 for Trolley Stop Signage, and $500 each for large banners on Routes 34 and 35. “Along with traditional sponsorships, Aberdeen Day offers businesses a variety of opportunities designed to meet their individual needs,” said Carmine Visone, Chairman of the Aberdeen Economic Business Council (EBC) and CEO of Home Away From Home Academy, who, along with Maxine Rescorl, Aberdeen Township Business Liaison, represents the EBC on the 2015 Aberdeen Day Committee. “With the expansion of the event, Aberdeen Day provides numerous ways for businesses to make themselves known to residents from Aberdeen and surrounding communities through storefront participation at our shopping center celebrations along Routes 34 and 35, setting up a table at the high school, or the different sponsorships offered.” For more information or to obtain sponsorship materials, contact Aberdeen Township Recreation Director Jim Colabelli at 732.583.4200, ext. 129 or 173. Applications are due by June 12. All donations are tax deductible. For circus sponsorship information, contact Maxine Rescorl at 732.583.4200, ext. 101.

The first major fundraiser for the newly formed Friends of the Keyport Library initiative, ‘Timpano Night,’ was held in late May. The event drew 42 guests, who filled Keyport eatery 28 East Enoteca for a taste of this decadent Italian dish. “Timpano Night” was based upon a scene from the 1996 Indie hit, Big Night, which was actually filmed in Keyport. In the movie, chef brothers prepared this deep-dish pie for a dinner party. The objective of Friends of the Keyport Library is to support the library in developing, maintaining and improving facilities, resources and services for the public. President Christine DeSimas says the event raised close to $1,000. “There are so many needs the library has, including first and foremost new flooring in the children’s section,” she says. “The carpet has to be removed and replaced, but the funds are just not there. Other fundraising goals for the library are to improve the space/shelving for books, furniture, equipment, children/teenage/adult fun and educational programs, computer programs, museum passes, guest speakers, increase movie selection, and an overall maintaining and improving resources and services for the public.” Upcoming fundraising events include a Fall Book Sale, Tote Design contest, Scarecrow Contest, Beer/Wine tasting and Holiday Ornament Collectibles. Note that the Keyport Public Library is now accepting donated books, DVDs and CDs.
Local Clergy Entertain with Humor On May 27, 2015, there was an hour-long program at the Court Jester in Aberdeen – “A Priest, a Rabbi and a Minister Walked into a Bar” - of religious humor from both Jewish and Christian traditions. The participants were Rev. Rusty Eidmann-Hicks of the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ, Rabbi Laurence Malinger of Temple Shalom of Aberdeen and Rev. Matt Thiringer of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Keyport. It was standing room only and the clergy are hoping to do an encore program next year.
Friends of the Library is important to the Keyport community at large. “Libraries still lend books,” says DeSimas. “But I think what some people don’t realize is that libraries serve every person in the community--kids, teenagers and seniors, English speaking, ESL speaking, book readers and computer seekers. They offer story time to a new generation, providing an opportunity to open them up to the love of reading. Libraries provide free access to computers and Wi-Fi, language and writing classes, and more."
