can’t believe it is August already, summer has gone by in a blink of an eye. I was thinking to myself the other day that I still haven’t been to the beach yet, I swear I used to be there all the time. But as we grow older, life seems to get in the way, and to be honest – just the thought of the beach on the weekends scare me. Those weekend warriors aka bennies that we all seem to dislike crowd the beach and the experience isn’t as relaxing as I would hope it would be – so I stay away until September (my favorite time) – and visit a friend’s pool or find an activity to do. Recently, I took up kayaking, literally just woke up one day and went to the store and bought myself one. I saw a couple kayakers the night before out on the Raritan Bay while I was walking my dogs and it looked so peaceful. So there you go, picked up a new hobby, why not?! I’ve gone out a handful of times already, and really am enjoying the scenery of the shoreline – plus the exercise is great. I wanted to share this photo with all my readers, I took this on a sandbar out in the bay, just parked my kayak and captured the moment.
Now let’s get to this issue of Community Magazine (CM). Some of you might be surprised at our front cover shot, as we always have a photo relating to the season, well this month we wanted to try something a little different. As you can see, we have two local ladies – twins to be precise – that are starring on Bravo TV’s hit show Real Housewives of New Jersey. We understand that sometimes reality TV isn’t all that “real”, so CM editor Michelle Tuchol sat down one afternoon with the new reality stars to talk about life, the show and family, check out our exclusive interview with “the Twins” on page 28. Until September,
Carolyn Burtnick

Keyport Yacht Club’s Charity Regatta Benefits RAINE Foundation The Keyport Yacht Club held its 14th annual Bill Volk Regatta and Charity Cup on June 21-22 to benefit the RAINE (Reaching All In Need Everyday) Foundation, a local Bayshore organization dedicated to helping people in need. “The Bill Volk Regatta is the major racing event of the season for the Keyport Yacht Club,” said Ann Quinn, Keyport Yacht Club Commodore. “It combines competitive sailboat racing with fundraising for charity. For the second year in a row, we partnered with the RAINE Foundation to help families in the area who are still trying to recover from Superstorm Sandy.” Racers from around the Raritan Bay area, Keyport Yacht Club members, RAINE volunteers, friends, and guests participated in activities on and off the water to help raise funds for people in the community. Twenty-eight skippers and their crew competed in six races over the weekend. RAINE Foundation members helped KYC Race Committee Chairperson Diane Bonnell hand out awards on Sunday for the top three finishers in each race, the best finish by a Keyport Yacht Club boat, and the Bill Volk Award for the best overall performance in the Regatta. “Thanks to people like you we are able to help so many,” RAINE founder Matt Dickens said during the awards ceremony. The Keyport Yacht Club hosted an after-the-races Happy Hour and dinner reception on Saturday evening for all racers, members, and guests. Musician Bill Donnelly provided live entertainment during the happy hour. The dinner reception featured a silent auction, a 50-50 raffle, and T-shirt sales to raise money for RAINE. Over 100 contributors from the Bayshore area donated items to the silent auction. Dinner guests bid against each other to win original artwork, sports memorabilia, theater tickets, gift certificates to local shops and restaurants, books, jewelry, and more. Support also came from individual donations, program ads, and event sponsorships. Sponsors for this year’s event were Saker ShopRites, Inc., CTC Compression Therapy Concept, and Kalian Companies. “We are thrilled that the Keyport Yacht Club has partnered with us these last two years. Thanks to the generous support of all who volunteered, raced, and donated we were able to assist so many families who really needed our help after Sandy. We’ll be able to do even more with the money that was raised this year,” said Patti Dickens, RAINE Founder. The Keyport Yacht Club’s Bill Volk Regatta and Charity Campaign raised $13,000 for the RAINE Foundation this year. The club has raised a total of $26,000 since partnering with RAINE in 2013 to help Sandy victims in the Bayshore area.
Keyport Yacht Club Commodore Ann Quinn, RAINE Foundation Founder Matt Dickens, KYC Race Committee Chairperson Diane Bonnell, KYC Member Bruce Van Meter, RAINE Foundation Founder Patricia Dickens, RAINE Foundation Vice President Carolyn Andress.
The Keyport Yacht Club hosted its first annual Bill Volk Memorial Regatta in 1994 to honor longtime club member, William Volk, Sr. who served as a trustee and chairman of the race committee and significantly upgraded the club’s race program. On June 8, 2001, the club held its first Regatta to benefit a charity to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Now in its 14th year, the Regatta has been held every June as an annual fundraising event. Last year, was the first year that the Keyport Yacht Club partnered with the RAINE Foundation. Heavily damaged by the storm itself, the club raised over $13,000 to help people in the Bayshore area most affected by Superstorm Sandy. Another $13,000 was raised during the 2014 Bill Volk Regatta.

Relay For Life is a community-based, volunteer-driven event that honors survivors and caregivers, remembers those lost to the disease, and fights for a world with more birthdays. Individuals and teams gather at a track, park, or fairground to campout and walk overnight in confidence that their effort will lead to a cure. Teams organize and complete fundraisers to raise money for the cause, often continuing their efforts at the event. These funds bring the American Cancer Society one step closer to its goal of helping people stay well by helping them get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. Since 1985, Relay For Life has developed from one man running around a track for 24 hours to a global event taking place in more than 6,100 communities and 20 countries. Relay For Life allows the entire community the opportunity to do something positive when so much negative surrounds the disease. We are so proud of Hazlet for coming together to support one another and help finish the fight against cancer. Thank you to our committee, team captains, participants, and sponsors who helped make this event happen.

A Few Small “Steps for Joe”
ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MATAWAN
O
STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN
n June 28, 2014, the community of Matawan shut down and rallied behind one incredible young man, Joe Ahmed. Ahmed is a student at Matawan Regional High School who heard three words no one wants to hear, “You have cancer.” The disease is Stage IV Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer that affects mostly children and young adults. Ahmed is fighting, however the treatment necessary for him is not FDA approved in the United States. Two of Ahmed’s classmates- Timothy Makalinao and Adam Elliot heard about Ahmed’s condition and decided to help their new friend. Within two weeks, a walk and charity was organized. Steps for Joe’s Cure was the name of the event held at the Matawan Regional High School Football Field. The $25 registration was online prior to the walk and people were able to register at the
football field that morning. T-shirts, bracelets and refreshments were served with the walk beginning around the town of Matawan at 10:00 a.m. Area streets such as Little, Broad and Main Streets were closed down for the walk. According to Makalinao and Elliot, the event raised a total of $50,000, adding into the additional amount raised through online donations. Joe and his family are immensely overwhelmed by the situation, but are very happy that the town of Matawan came out to support. “I think it’s something very special. When we started getting the crazy amount of support he was getting, and to see his peers create something for him; you hear all of these kids who have cancer and they don’t have the same kind of support. I am so grateful for the support and Joe is blessed enough to have so many people care about him,” said Elda Eralta, Joe’s cousin.
Students Timothy Makalinao (left) and Adam Elliot (right) organized “Steps for Joe” for their classmate Joseph Ahmed (center).

Keyport Central School
GETS MAKEOVER
T
he Keyport Board of Education received a state grant that will directly benefit Keyport Central School, allowing for such improvements as a new playground, bathrooms and technology lab, as well as extending the pre-K school day. All projects will be completed by the start of the 2014-15 school year in September. “Parent communication was instrumental in obtaining the grant for the playground as well as the need to modify the pre-K school day,” says Lisa Savoia, superintendent of Keyport Public Schools. “It’s important for parents to communicate their needs and concerns. Our mission is to keep the channels open. The only way we know about parents’ problems is if they bring them forward.” To help boost communication, the Keyport Board of Education is further expanding into social media with an increased presence on Facebook and Twitter, as well as an online Keynotes newsletter. The superintendent applied for $2.3 million of the state Regular Operating District Grants, and received $2.1 million. The funds were allocated for new physically developmental playground equipment. The site will feature a hard surface and mulch combination, rock wall and more picnic tables to

be used for instructional activities outside, explains Savoia. In addition, four sets of bathrooms will be completely renovated, including auto-flush and sensor faucets. Upstairs, the library will receive an overhaul. “The library is being turned into a full news media center with the addition of a technology lab,” says Savoia. “This is not to get rid of books, but to create a balance of hard-copy literature and technology. We are also adding 25 new Chromebook Carts per grade, for grades 3 to 8.” Finally, all students will now be dismissed from school at the same time. Previously, pre-K was released at 2:00 p.m., creating a 50-minute gap between pre-K dismissal and the standard central school discharge at 2:49 p.m. Pre-K orientation will now be held in the summer instead of on the first day of school. The central school will also receive an electrical upgrade, and they are anticipating air conditioning for the cafetorium by summer 2015. For its share, Keyport High School will get new unit ventilation, and a three- to four-year plan has been implemented for the football field, including new sod, irrigation, and infrastructure for lighting and a scoreboard.

embers of Boy Scout Troop 66 of Matawan were volunteer workers at the Temple Shalom community garden recently. Their tasks, among many, included helping to install wire fencing to protect the garden from small animals. The troop has also helped out in the garden in the past on other projects. Gan Tikvah, the Garden of Hope, provides donations of vegetables to the Matawan United Methodist Church food pantry during the summer. It was started five years ago by Lenore Robinson, chairperson of Temple Shalom’s Social Action committee. The garden is completely organic and produces crops including lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and zucchini. Volunteers of all ages are always welcome to work in the garden. The program of intense study allows students to enhance their personal performance as they gain theater experience and knowledge. The five-week program ends with an original concert on stage titled, “New Voice of 2014: Oh, What a Night!” that was held on August 1 and 2, 2014. Only a select group are accepted to this program which includes three age categories. Senior, which are 15 to 18-year-olds; Junior Plus which are 13 and 14-year-olds; and Junior which are 10 to 12-year olds. Over 200 children auditioned for the Junior Plus category and Sophia was one of the 27 that were selected. At her audition, Sophia sang “Whatever Happened To My Part?” from Spamalot. The program includes rigorous classes in musical theater performance, acting, dance, improvisation; and attendance at guest workshops led by professional actors, directors, and casting agents. The Conservatory offers these gifted and extremely talented young people the opportunity to challenge themselves to achieve new goals, learn new skills, and to develop self-discipline and respect. All of which is an excellent foundation for their future. One Conservatory graduate is the now-famous actress Anne Hathaway. Sophia’s performance background includes being Belle in Beauty and the Beast with Spotlight Players; as Mack in The Search for Christmas with Lighthouse Productions; and as Dainty June in Gypsy with Trilogy Productions Inaugural Show. She has performed locally at Aberdeen Day, The Stone Pony, Count Basie Theatre, and at Monmouth Mall, as well as various other venues and school productions. Interestingly, Sophia was an avid soccer player and in sixth grade she asked her mother if she could audition for the school Christmas play. Following her audition, she was chosen for the Lead role. When she sang for the teachers, they could not believe it and shared their amazement with Ms. Murillo. “It was a shock to me because Sophia had
not mentioned singing before this.” Sophia shared, “I have always had a desire to sing. I rarely shared my feelings about this when I was young until I was heard and told I was actually good at it. I feel completely blessed, and singing always brings me back to a happy place no matter how wrong things might be going.” Sophia recorded a cover, “Warrior” at Clearcut Recording Studios in March of this year. Her vocal coach Jeff Alani Stanfill worked with her then brought into the studio to record the Demi Lovato song. “Sophia sang “Warrior” as a trademark song for many reasons. She has overcome some obstacles and seen children be bullied and hurt. Some of her fans have said that hearing her sing this song saved their lives and meant so much to them,” said her mother. Jessica Murillo said of her daughter, “Sophia is a hard worker who is constantly working on how she can make a difference and impact people. She wants to share the healing that came to her through performing. Sophia was shy and anxious. Performing and developing the friendships she made during that time has helped mold her character into a compassionate, fun-loving young lady.” Sophia still enjoys the soccer, which she played from age four. “I played on JAGS, High Level soccer and really miss it. But for the level of competitive soccer I played, I couldn’t manage both in my schedule. I will still play in high school.” She added, “I must admit that the soccer field, team effort, and level of competitiveness prepared me for the stage.” Sophia explained how she felt about being chosen for the Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Theater. “I couldn’t be more honored to have this opportunity. I am surrounded by so many talented kids that continually blow me away. I still find it surreal that I am part of this extraordinary group and could not think of a better place to spend my summer.” When asked if she plans to pursue a singing career, Sophia answered, “Singing is my passion, hobby and love. Every opportunity I get, I will sing. I am constantly invited to venues to perform and will most definitely go on auditions. I love theater, acting, and performing, so anything involving them would be something I would love to pursue.” Fourteen-year-old Sophia Murillo is wise beyond her young age. In response to being asked what was the most important thing she has learned through her singing, Sophia answered, “I learned that a voice can strike the chords of people’s hearts, set an atmosphere, tell a story, and change a life. Singing is so much bigger than me. I can’t wrap my head around the impact singing has made on me and for those listening. Many people have been moved beyond what I can even understand. I am 14 and still have so much to learn. I am so grateful that Paper Mill has extended me the opportunity to be part of their thrilling program. It will foster in me an experience to remember for the rest of my life.”

T
he twins,” as affectionately known on this season’s Real Housewives of New Jersey (RHONJ), are as real as they come: sweet, down-to-earth, and equipped with no holds bar attitudes.
“Double the trouble, double the fun!” says Teresa.
I sit waiting inside the Colts Neck Dunkin’ Donuts, an apparent hot-spot for a Sunday afternoon, with Bobby Ciasulli, Nicole’s boyfriend, watching the pair slowly but surely waltz in after a small gaggle has coerced (with very little convincing needed) the two to chat. The ladies wrapped up their first season of filming RHONJ in April and are anxiously awaiting the public’s opinion. This is the first time a set of twins is cast for the show, and they are excited to be a part of that milestone. Teresa and Nicole were raised in Brooklyn, NY, but now reside in Colts Neck, surrounded by loving friends and a close-knit Italian family. “Family is always the most important,” says Teresa, who believes that she and her sister are each other’s rock. They also seem to play off of one another the way you’d expect a pair of females who share similar DNA would. For those who haven’t seen the first couple episodes of Season 6, a brief history: Teresa remarried her ex-husband, Rino, after an 11-year divorce; they have Giovanni, 18, who will be starting his freshman year at Brookdale Community College in the fall. Teresa helps run the family’s restaurant, Ponte Vecchio, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, with Rino. The family also owns Angelo’s on Mulberry St. in NY.
If you know Nicole Napolitano Mauriello and Teresa Aprea - even if it has only been a short time - then you are more than likely to be friends for life.
Nicole has two sons, Joey, 14, and Anthony, 16, from a past marriage, who both attend Colts Neck High School. Currently, Nicole works for Jets.com as a Private Aviation Specialist, where she has become an asset to the firm in helping clients navigate the ins and outs of personal aviation transportation (You can reach her at Nicole@jets.com). She and Bobby have been dating for over a year. When I first met the twins, I could tell that they were not the type of women to turn down any opportunity. Both are very outgoing and opinionated; but after speaking with them, I also noticed that

may or may not face on the show, Nicole and Teresa had to get used to the initial exposure of cameras rolling on their day-to-day activities. They admitted, however, that crewmembers were extremely nice and helpful, and were able to make the transition smooth so the twins could pretend there were no cameras or crew filming every move. The objects of “The Twins” affection are their children, from left is Nicole with her two sons, Anthony and Joey, Teresa, and her son Giovanni at a family party.
Nicole recalls one filming sequence where she and Bobby were out to dinner…for four hours! Nothing out of the ordinary seemed to happen in their eyes, but at some point later in the evening, Bobby made a comment at the table about bread being sexy, and the only thing Nicole could do was roll her eyes. And that was the money shot.
Teresa chimes in on how fast the shots seem to go after watching the LEFT: On vacation this summer in Chicago, Bobby Ciasulli and Nicole visit the fire house featured on NBC’s hit show Chicago Fire. an outpouring of backing from friends, family, and the people who watch the show. Some fans have even gone as far as sharing their personal woes. The fact that these women are so genuine in person, and have reciprocated the generosity with their time, we can only hope that their good-hearted personalities will shine though whatever producers aim to portray them as. Each of the twins feel blessed to have such prosperity in their lives, and have given back to their own community before fundraising during RHONJ filming. Nicole wants everyone to know about the organization that she’s involved in, Pietro’s Fight, to raise awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). You can visit the site here, at www.pietrosfight.org. The women are very active in the church community in Colts Neck, and enjoy volunteering at special events, and helping such causes as women’s shelters in neighboring areas. The twins seem to be experts at reinventing themselves. They have traveled to study and participated in international conferences to speak on personal development. They have run their own businesses. Teresa is even certified to assist in the OR! Just ask her about it! As women in their 40s—and no one’s really counting here—the possibilities of starting new ventures are still endless. Teresa hopes to start an organization or charity in honor of a dear friend who has recently passed away. She would also love to start a health and wellness business with Giovanni. Nicole sees a possible fashion line in her future, and wants to get back into tennis. Although they are still very athletic, both women were avid tennis players and very much involved with the Colts Neck Racquet Club. Nicole and Teresa agree that now is the time to sit down and talk about future plans. One thing is certain as the twin’s progress with their lives: every new venture will be together embracing each other’s support. I leave the twins as I had first met them: big hugs, kisses, and hope for the best of luck in the future.

n September 20, 2014, Hazlet will be holding its Inaugural Skate Jam. Originally being held in Keyport, the contest was moved to its neighboring town by Christine Matarese, a Keyport Recreation member, when it was announced that Keyport had cancelled its plan of building a skate park. Determined to give back to the children who devoted their time and effort to skateboarding, Matarese took the initiative to organize an event where they could flaunt their skills on well-constructed ramps, instead of makeshift ones. With the assistance of Cliff Moore, the president of Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative and the Hazlet Recreation representative for the upcoming jam, the competition was successfully prepared in the new skating arena.
In a brief interview, Moore believed that the jam would help the youth spend their time wisely. “I think any activity at all that keeps kids active, off the streets, and safe is worth doing.” Along with that, he stated that the jam would bring about many opportunities and open new doors. “I think that it will showcase some of the great things that we have in Hazlet that people don’t know about, it’ll utilize some of the facilities in Hazlet that are underutilized and it will introduce a lot of new children into skating.” In order to compete, participants are required to pay a small admission entry in which they become eligible to win prizes. Skaters can either sign-up early by printing out the registration form at www. keyportonline.com or register the day of the Skate Jam at 12:00 p.m. All contestants would be sectioned into groups, based on their-age, where they would then challenge one another for the ultimate reward. Those who are not avid skaters still have a chance to win something through the multiple give-a-ways that will take place throughout the day. Moreover, there will be an educational workshop that has included safety tips in the past years. Children from other towns are invited to attend. The skate jam will take place at 1766 Union Avenue in Hazlet. Whether a skater or not, you’re guaranteed to have lots of fun!

4th Annual Matawan Regional High School Alumni Soccer Game
STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN
On July 11, 2014, former graduates of Matawan Regional High School returned to participate in the 4th annual MRHS Alumni soccer game. The event is also known as the Chris Dhume game, in honor of the seventeen-year-old student who passed away in 2011 of meningitis. Many of the players were close with Chris and played in his memory. Tarek Morsy, graduate of MRHS Class of ‘10, believes that Chris would have been very happy with the success of the event. “He loved playing soccer; there is no better way to memorialize him,” said Morsy. Other players happily volunteered to be a part of this great annual event. The teams are divided by graduate year, odds wearing maroon shirts, evens wearing white shirts while battling out in two 40 minute rounds, but what everybody looks forward to
is halftime. Every year two students are chosen for scholarships in Chris’s name, however this year was different. Another scholarship was created in honor of José Martinez, Chris’ godfather who passed away in October. Dillon Ahrens and Joe Garofalo were awarded the Dhume memorial scholarships, while Brendan Howley was awarded the Martinez scholarship.

HAZLET FIRST AID
Makes Dreams Come True All Allie Rech wanted to do was take a tour of an ambulance. A life goal, the Hazlet resident realized her dreams on July 3 when family members gathered to make it happen.
STORY KAITLYN ANNESS
Allie Rech fulfills a lifelong dream of riding in an ambulance thanks to the Hazlet First Aid Squad.
Rech was born with a chromosomal abnormality, an unbalanced chromosomal translocation. According to her aunt, Patti Dickens, Rech didn’t walk until she was 4-yearsold and she didn’t talk until age 5. Years later, Dickens said Rech has now graduated high school, and is taking classes for adults with developmental disabilities at Brookdale Community College. In her last year, Rech competed with classmates to win the Eddie Grischbowsky Memorial Scholarship. Rech’s essay was the clincher. The question was simple, what do you hope for the future? “My dreams for the future would be to become an Emergency Medical Technician. I would like to be on an ambulance and go to help people when they have been in an accident or if they have had a seizure or other medical problem,” Rech wrote. After reading the essay, Dickens, founder of the Raine Foundation, decided to step up. Dickens contacted Steve Schmidt, an EMT in Hazlet, who immediately agreed to make Rech’s dreams come true. 24
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
On July 3, Rech went to Dickens house for some pizza. Little did she know, at the end of their meal, a group from Hazlet First Aid would show up to surprise Rech with a ride in the ambulance. “They really made this special child’s wish come true,” Dickens said. “She was crying - sobbing, actually, and absolutely thrilled. “ As a result of the surprise of her life, Rech is donating a portion of her scholarship to the Hazlet First Aid Squad. Dickens said, “She told me it was the best day of her life.”

Hazlet Resident Competes in International Karate & USA National Karate Championships
I
n our December 2013 issue of Community Magazine, we interviewed Hazlet resident Michael Buttermark and his preparation for a karate world championship in Mumbai, India. Well, we finally caught up with this busy athlete about his trip to the World Championship, National Championship and vision. At Mumbai, Michael Buttermark of Hazlet competed in the International Karatedo Gojukai Association’s (IKGA) World Championship that has been contested every four years since 1993. This particular event had 32 of the 60 countries within IKGA represented. Buttermark competed in male veteran (45+ y.o.) divisions for kata (forms) and kumite (fighting) representing the United States of America and brought great distinction to our country by qualifying into the medal rounds in both. In his kata division, Michael defeated very skilled opponents from Moriches (4-1), Argentina (5-0 in quarterfinals), and Brazil (3-2 in semi-finals), which set up a final between the USA vs. RSA (Republic of South Africa). Unfortunately, that match went 5-0 to South Africa leaving Buttermark with a Silver. Later in day one, Michael also competed in the kumite (fighting) division in which he took the Bronze medal. Fast forward seven months to July
Michael Buttermark is on the podium in India at the International Karatedo Gojukai Association’s (IKGA) World Championship with his Silver Medal for USA.

2014, Michael Buttermark and his 8-year-old Matawan student – Prithvi Paruchuri competed in the USA National Karate Federation’s 2014 National Championship and US Team Trials held at the Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino in Reno, Nevada. On day one of the 2014 NKF Nationals, Buttermark failed to repeat as national champ in the Goju/Style Specific kata division (ages 18+); he placed 5th. T h e second day of nationals was a completely different story – this time success… times 3! Early in the day, Buttermark successfully coached Prithvi Paruchuri through four rounds of competition to earn a Gold Medal/National Champion title. Later that afternoon it was time for Michael Buttermark (45+ Advanced) to compete in his respective division. Buttermark retained his national title earned in 2013 (at Greenville, South Carolina) by winning four rounds with scores of 5-0, 5-0, 3-2, and 3-2 to earn his Gold Medal/National Champ title in kata. Buttermark now has a total of 5 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze medal from National Championships and his dojo, collectively, has won 213. Day three in Reno brought kumite (fighting) divisions for the athletes from our area. Prithvi Paruchuri defeated his first opponent, the tallest and largest boy in their division with ease, but lost his quarter-final match finishing 7th in the country. Buttermark was last to compete, placing him in the finals with Tony Pisani of Long Island, NY for the national title. Although Buttermark quickly established a 3-point lead with a clean sweep takedown and scoring punch; Pisani also scored a tying 3-point scoring takedown from a clinch with 36 seconds remaining in the match and scored a go ahead 1-point punch with only 16 seconds remaining. Three failed scoring attempts by Buttermark in the

waning 16-seconds left him settling for a Silver Medal and gracious in defeat. After all his training (and that of his student athletes), for both IKGA World and USA National Championships, Michael Buttermark is still going strong with additional agenda items for 2014 and beyond. In late September, he will be one of 60 IKGA karate masters from around the world participating in a weeklong seminar in Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan. These meetings and training are only for IKGA karate masters and by invitation only. Buttermark has internalized these sentiments, “To attain greatness you must set goals for yourself, establish a plan to get there, and work tirelessly to achieve them. Weak individuals ‘dream’ or ‘hope’ for success and strong, determined people ‘set goals’ and ‘work’ hard to achieve them.” Michael Buttermark is an owner/ master instructor (Shihan) of Matawanbased Traditional Karate Center.

lmost 600 guests showed their support for the Monmouth County SPCA at their annual Fur Ball on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Stillwell Stables in Colts Neck, NJ. The evening broke records, raising $450,000 for the homeless animals in their care.
Guests enjoyed live music by The Bobby Bandiera Band and special musical guests The Melissa Chill Duo with Rob Dye, open bar, a never-ending cocktail hour, gourmet food stations, a huge candy buffet by Dylan’s Candy Bar, a highly-successful silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Over $40,000 was raised for the MCSPCA Pet Pantry Project, a program that helps families in need keep their beloved pets at home by providing zthem with food and other pet supplies. More than 1,000 families are supported through this program each month annually. Hazlet Farmers Market
Open Weekly
The Hazlet Business Owners Association recently introduced a weekly Farmers Market to the Hazlet Township and the local community. Weather permitting, the Farmers Market is every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Airport Plaza in Hazlet until October. The Market opened on July 13, and with the summer upon us the HBOA Market offers consumers fresh produce, honey, plants, and more - straight from the farms. Adding to the variety of fresh produce at the Market are pickled products, fresh mozzarella, fresh breads, pierogis, stuffed cabbages, kielbasa, herbal remedies, gourmet nuts & dried fruits, homemade doggie treats, fresh pies and more. The Farmers Market is presented by the Hazlet Business Owners Association. Funds raised from the HBOA Market support the HBOA scholarship program, open to any Hazlet resident high school senior regardless of what high school they attend. Funds for this scholarship program are raised throughout the year through the Window Decorating Contest, HBOA networking events, and other HBOA events. Ted Koczon, the HBOA President states, “Not only does the Market help raise funds for a great cause such as the HBOA Scholarship Program, but it encourages the community to eat fresh and buy local.” (WIC & Senior FMNP vouchers accepted by some farmers at the HBOA Market.)
