Matawan PBA & Keyport PBA Volleyball Tournament Benefitting Restore The Bayshore STORY VICKY VALET
O
n August 8, Restore the Bayshore (RTB) hosted the Matawan vs. Keyport PBA Volleyball Tournament on the Keyport Waterfront. Despite the dreary weather, members from throughout the community were present from the tournament’s initial serve to demonstrate their support for RTB’s efforts and to cheer on their local police officers. The event, which was a fundraiser benefitting RTB, involved a best-of-three-games tournament between the Matawan Police Department and the Keyport Police Department, of which Matawan came out on top. However, it was not the final score that mattered as much as the generosity of those in attendance. RTB’s volleyball tournament was coordinated by President Janet Gallo, Treasurer Gina Chico, board of trustees members Katie Moelius and Tara Szabo and the founders—Matawan Chief of Police Jason Gallo, Kathi Gallo and Matawan Patrolman Chris Stark—in conjunction with local business owner Christine Bennet. According to President Gallo, “[Bennet] requested funds from RTB to assist in the beach cleanup, because the beach had suffered a lot of damage and she organizes a volleyball league in the summer…we granted them money in excess of what they would need.” When the work was completed Bennet and RTB

collaborated to organize a volleyball tournament as a means of giving back for RTB’s support. Locally based non-profit organization RTB was incorporated in November 2012 in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. “We formed because we wanted to support community-based losses in the Bayshore area, and we also wanted to support organizations that were tending to the personal losses in the Bayshore area as a result of the hurricane,” said President Gallo. The Matawan vs. Keyport PBA Volleyball Tournament is only one of the many projects RTB participates in. Currently, the organization is in the process of forming a team to run in the Restore the Shore 5k in Seaside Heights, N.J. Additionally, RTB merchandise to benefit the non-profit and its cause is available for sale by Kathy Sobocinski at Allota Hair Salon in Matawan, N.J. Although the Bayshore will eventually return to a state of normalcy, thereby rendering RTB’s efforts needless, President Gallo assured that RTB’s 2-year-long commitment to the community would be honored. “As long as there’s a need, we’d like to fulfill it,” said President Gallo.

Matawan’s Ronald Robinson Jr : West Point’s Future STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN
N
oemi Robinson and Ronald Robinson Sr. could not be any more proud of their son, Ronald “Ronnie” Robinson Jr. of Matawan. On May 4, 2013, Ronald, a graduate of Red Bank Catholic School, was nominated by Congressman Frank Pallone to join West Point, the United States Military Academy.
Ronald Jr. has wanted to get into West Point since he was nine years old. While none of his family members went to West Point, members on his father’s side were in the military. Ronald Jr. was always in awe of the brave soldiers who serve our country, and has always wanted to learn more. During the end of his sophomore year of high school, Ronald Jr. worked to join the leadership program at West Point before accepted in his junior year. He passed the physical and intelligent tests required, with some help from his mother, before getting a letter of reassurance during football season. He was accepted not only into West Point, but Notre Dame, the two schools he always wanted to go to, before deciding on West Point. Ronald Jr. went to West Point on July 1st for a six week boot camp, before starting his freshman year in August. After forty seven months, Ronald Jr. should be a second lt. when he graduates, but his goal is to be an army corp engineer. “He has high goals that he wants to achieve, he is a serious student, he just wants to serve his country” Ronald Sr. said.

TWO BUSINESSES ACKNOWLEDGED FOR HELPING FIRST RESPONDERS FOLLOWING SANDY STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Left to right: Hazlet Fire Inspector John Beslanovitz, Rizwan Talib (Qureshi’s brother), West Keansburg Fire Chief Joseph C. Schroeck, Hazlet Plaza Gulf owner Mohammad Qureshi, and Hazlet Fire Chief Robert Cullen gather for a picture. A
s the October anniversary of Superstorm Sandy approaches, two businesses in Hazlet are remembered for their assistance to the area’s First Responders. Mohammad Qureshi, owner of Hazlet Plaza Gulf on Route 35 N. and Poole Avenue and John Gentile, General Manager of QuickChek on Route 36 S. and Poole Avenue made certain that local First Responders received gas for their vehicles so they could remain available to help surrounding communities immediately following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Qureshi, who has provided dedicated service to the community since 1999, utilized a generator he had and was able to keep his Gulf station open. By staying in contact with Hazlet Fire Inspector John Beslanovitz and various others, he learned that not only residents of Hazlet and nearby communities needed gas, but First Responders urgently needed to fuel their vehicles in order to protect and assist those same residents. Qureshi said gas was delivered from Albany, New York and Connecticut, “So we could serve everyone. I had 10 pumps going for 10 days and my generator ran flawlessly.” Members of the Hazlet Police Department were on hand to be certain things stayed calm and helped with directing those in line – some with gas cans, others with cars. Family members assisted Qureshi, included his wife who later delivered their baby girl on Thanksgiving Day. “I was honored to do what I could to help the township,” Qureshi said. He noted that he did not raise his gas prices during this time. Fire Inspector Beslanovitz said all those who could volunteered at the fire house during and following the storm. An important note is that all First Responders paid for the gas they received.

Schroeck, and Hazlet Fire Chief Robert Cullen gather for a picture. QuickChek Manager Gentile was thanked earlier this year for assisting First Responders during Hurricane Sandy. (Not pictured is QuikChek District Leader Michelle Owens.)
Fire Chief Joseph C. Schroeck of West Keansburg Fire Company No. 1 explained that having their vehicles gassed meant they could charge their equipment and pagers which are of utmost importance in being able to answer emergencies. Many of the Responders also needed to get to and from their homes then back to the station to continue assisting the community throughout the storm. “Mohammad really helped us out. We appreciate him taking the time to make sure we had what was needed,” said Chief Schroeck. Hazlet Fire Chief Robert Cullen added, “We are thankful for all the help. They stepped up and helped us out when we needed it.” Gentile, who manages QuickChek, was in contact with the District Leader Michelle Owens and they also worked with Fire Inspector Beslanovitz to assist the best they could throughout the days following Sandy. Every effort to accommodate both residents and the First Responders in a timely and efficient way was carried out. “These volunteer First Responders needed help and they do so much for the community that it was important to us to assist them. It was a time of dire need for everyone, especially them, and it felt good to be able to give back to the customers, the First Responders, and the surrounding communities.” In times of crisis everyone is on edge, and has the need for help. In the aftermath of Sandy, Hazlet Plaza Gulf owner Mohammed Qureshi and QuickChek Store Manager John Gentile saw the need and responded the best way they could. Both received a plaque from Hazlet’s First Responders thanking them for their unwavering dedication to the community.

STORY SUSAN MURPHY
INVITED TO PLAY ON NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM
Francesca “Frankie” Tagliaferri before she left for her trip to England.
C
olts Neck resident, and former Keyport resident, Francesca Tagliaferri has pursued her love of playing soccer for 11 years. Even more impressive is the fact that Frankie, as she prefers to be called, is only 14 years old. She currently plays with the club team Players Development Academy (PDA) on the U15 Arsenal team, which is an age group up from her actual age. “PDA is an amazing environment to be in, which has truly developed me into the player I am today,” she shared. Frankie was invited to her first National Team Camp in May, 2012. She explained what then led to an exciting opportunity. “Throughout the last year, I was invited to three other National Team Camps, one U14, and two U17. After my first U17 camp in July with 29 girls, I made the roster of 20 to play in England from August 19 through August 29. In England, we will have a 10-day camp with training sessions each day and two games against England’s national team.” On being chosen to play, Frankie emphasized, “This is a huge honor because most of the girls on the U17 National Team are two to two and a half years older than me!” She noted that growing up she always played up an age group or two. “I believe that helped my development tremendously. I also had great coaches and a great support system.” Frankie’s family and friends are all very proud and excited for her, and have been supportive every step of the way.
Frankie’s #1 fans and biggest supporters are her family, especially her younger brother and her cousins, who are seen in this photo with a message for her - “Achieve Your Dream Frankie, We Love You.” Clockwise starting from top is Matthew Liggio, Katie Liggio, Christina Liggio, Trey Tagliaferri (Frankie’s younger brother) and Tessa Liggio.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
“We all have the passion for the game which helps us as a team play the way we do, and that’s what I want for the school team as well.”
At ages three and four, Frankie enjoyed gymnastics, soccer, and swimming, though she always loved playing soccer the most. “When it became too hard to attend all the practices, I chose soccer at the age of six. I also played softball and basketball growing up but soon had to pick one sport again, and of course I picked soccer.” Frankie said she has previously attended five sports camps located in California, Oregon, Ohio, and Connecticut. She also noted that throughout the year, National Team Scouts are present at games scouting, as well as critiquing players at camps. In September, Frankie will enter Colts Neck High School as a freshman, having attended Cedar Drive Middle School last year. As for sports in high school, she explained, “Since I have a high demand from soccer and it’s my first priority, I stopped playing basketball this year, I will hopefully run track in high school.” All of this could change due to attending the National Team Camp in England. Frankie explained, “When sports camps are held during the school year, I do miss school. If I continue with the U17’s, I will miss school in October and November to help the team qualify for the U17 World Cup Championships. The qualifying tournament will be October 30 through November 9 in Jamaica and then the World Cup will be in March in Costa Rica. So, if I keep going with this team, I will be missing school, but tutors are of course provided because the coaches know that academics come first.” The schedule Frankie will be following at camp is very demanding. “We usually train one and a half hours in the morning, then have lectures from trainers, nutritionists, meetings with the national team coaches, along with trainer treatments, then more training in the evening. And of course, we all look forward to eating after our sessions,” she said. This tough schedule and the fact that she is the youngest team member do not bother Frankie. “I have been to a couple of these camps before, and of course I am always excited to be a part of these tremendous opportunities, but I never get nervous because I am confident that I am prepared and ready to take on the challenges that are set in front of me.” When asked if she knew how long she would be traveling with the team, she answered, “I hope for a very long time!” As for what Frankie wants to gain from this experience, she said, “I hope to bring the discipline and excitement back to my school team. At these camps, every one of these girls are disciplined in what they do, eat, drink and how they prepare for the sessions that follow. We all have the passion for the game which helps us as a team play the way we do, and that’s what I want for the school team as well.” Most importantly, how does this highly-motivated 14-yearold soccer player feel about being asked to play in such a prestigious group? “Very honored, and appreciative that I got the opportunity to show them what I can do and learn from an amazing group of the best U17 players in the nation, and best coaching staff. Just being a part of the environment they put me in is a huge honor. From the trainings, to stretching and foam rolling in between sessions, to ice baths and chocolate milk after sessions, it makes me very proud to say I am playing for my family, my team and PDA, myself, and my country.”

A Poets Legacy
Turns To Hope Through Hazlet Resident At 5- and 2-years-old, respectively, Mark Manginelli of Hazlet, and his brother, Michael, had barely scratched the surface of carefree youth when they received identical diagnoses: Cystic Fibrosis—an inherited, chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system. The year was 1990, and the life expectancy was 18-years-old.
ABOVE: Mark Manginelli, co-founder of BREATHE, The Morgan Lucas Schuldt Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis, stands with his girlfriend Diana Santo of Hazlet. LEFT: Left to right: BREATHE co-founders Murray G. Dychtwald and Barbara Schuldt, are the parents of Morgan Lucas Schuldt, who is the namesake of the foundation.
“Our main hope is that we can help families with Cystic Fibrosis all over the country and have a BREATHE chapter in every state.”
T
he disease quickly consumed their childhoods, and practicing breathing treatments two or three times each day became a routine activity, as did taking enzyme pills before every meal. Additional obstacles faced the boys at school, where the prospect of taking medication in front of their classmates during lunchtime made them very self-conscious, fearful of being judged by their peers. However, it was not the students, but their parents who made the brothers feel insecure. According to Mark Manginelli, “parents would ignorantly approach our mother and ask, ‘Why are your children popping pills in school next to my children? What do they have, AIDS?’ Since those days, we learned that no matter what life throws your way and as ugly as it may be, we will always prevail.” And, despite the mental and physical challenges of growing up with Cystic Fibrosis, Manginelli did prevail. “I never let my condition get in the way of anything I wanted to do. I made sure that I excelled in school and sports because of it, but thankfully my support system of loving family and friends helped make it easier,” he said. Manginelli has come a long way since his days in the schoolyard, defying all odds and the short life expectancy given to him 23 years ago. He has a successful career in financial advising and consulting at Fountainhead Capital Management in Edison, N.J., and has channeled his experiences with Cystic Fibrosis towards the greater good as an active member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Monmouth Medical Center. More recently, however, Manginelli fulfilled a life-long goal and founded his own foundation for Cystic Fibrosis: BREATHE, The Morgan Lucas Schuldt Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis. BREATHE—which is an acronym for Bringing Relief Everyday Against Troublesome Health Expenses—strives to provide financial assistance to New Jersey’s children and adults living with Cystic Fibrosis so that they can pursue advanced degrees. Until recently, those living with Cystic Fibrosis had an adolescent life expectancy, therefore
preventing participation in higher education. Although people with the disease are now leading longer lives, the prospect of a college education is still often not considered. Furthermore, the high medical expenses associated with Cystic Fibrosis make saving for college nearly impossible for many families. With this in mind, it is Manginelli’s mission for BREATHE to make higher education a reality through means of scholarships. “Our main hope is that we can help families with Cystic Fibrosis all over the country and have a BREATHE chapter in every state. We have a goal to raise at least $100,000 our first year, but with our experience in fundraising and our amazing network of sponsorships, we should have no problem exceeding that,” said Manginelli. In addition to providing those with Cystic Fibrosis the opportunity to pursue advanced degrees, BREATHE aims to honor the life of Morgan Lucas Schuldt, a poet, publisher, editor, teacher and writer who passed away from Cystic Fibrosis complications following two lung transplants on January 30, 2012 at the age of 33. Schuldt was also the son of BREATHE co-founders Murray G. Dychtwald and Barbara Schuldt. “It was immediately after meeting Murray and Barbara when we came together and had the same exact vision of what we knew had to be done…there’s a drastic gap that needs to be filled today, medications that need to be filled to be filled today, double lung transplants that need to be done today and even bills that need to be paid today,” said Manginelli. “By the grace of God, we’ll soon be able to make those things possible for families that may otherwise have no other place to turn.” A taxing journey lies ahead of Manginelli and his young foundation. However, just as he persevered through the trials of learning to live with Cystic Fibrosis, he is prepared to fervently persist once again, this time for those who share his story. “To honor Morgan and keep his legacy alive, along with every other friend we have lost to Cystic Fibrosis, is the reason we do what we do,” said Manginelli. “We may not have a cure yet, but if we can make it easier for these families until then, that is our passion.”

embers and guests of the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce enjoyed a fun and relaxing evening of networking on the Navesink River at the Chamber’s Annual Summer Celebration, held on August 7 at Windansea Restaurant, Highlands. Great food and a sunset boat ride capped the evening at the waterfront restaurant and night spot, which not only survived Superstorm Sandy, but was rebuilt with even nicer amenities. Despite the appearance of some wind and clouds at first, the sun peaked out as soon as members and guests began to arrive, and the weather remained beautiful for the rest of the evening. The Chamber’s Executive Director Terence Biggs II said, “Our members and guests came out to enjoy a wonderful evening of fellowship, networking, delicious food and making new business connections. The staff at Windansea went out of their way to make sure that everyone had a memorable time. The Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce and Windansea Restaurant proved that New Jersey is indeed stronger than the storm.” The Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce is a valued resource for businesses and the community. R anney School’s
New Head Began July 1
T
he Ranney School Board of Trustees appointed Dr. John Griffith as Ranney School’s fourth Head of School. Dr. Griffith, former Head of School at Battle Ground Academy (BGA) in Franklin, Tennessee, assumed this responsibility on July 1.
Dr. Griffith attended Ranney School’s 49th graduation exercises and introduced himself to the Class of 2013, the school’s newest alumni. His wife, Dana, and their four-year-old daughter, Claire, recently relocated back to the Northeast and are looking forward to being closer to family and to Dr. Griffith’s New Jersey roots. “Dana and I could not be more excited about the move to a wonderful community and joining a school of the caliber of Ranney,” said Dr. Griffith. “I have been so impressed by the talented faculty, a strong administrative team, successful alumni, committed Trustees, supportive parent community, and, especially the school’s bright and engaging students.” In the spring of 2012, the Board of Trustees, led by President Jamie Price, commenced a five-month search process, which generated widespread global interest. “Dr. Griffith’s outstanding record of achievement and accomplishments combined with his superb academic preparation have made him the ideal candidate to uphold the vision for academic excellence established by our founder Russell G. Ranney, as well as the school’s mission, and embodies the perfect qualities to follow the great legacy of excellence created by Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff.” Dr. Sykoff retired as the Head of Ranney School at the end of the 2012-13 school year following a 20 year tenure. Dr. Sykoff will continue his relationship with Ranney School as Headmaster Emeritus. During his tenure at BGA, Dr. Griffith served in two different roles, first as Headmaster working with the President of the School and, for the past four years, in the traditional role of Head of School. At BGA, he managed a budget of approximately $15 million, an $8.5 million endowment, and a physical plant of 60 acres on two campuses (with total land holdings of 95 acres). He has led a capital campaign of $6

million for a visual arts center and athletic and wellness center. His programmatic accomplishments included the implementation of a new technology planning process, including redoing all campus infrastructure, movement from PC to Apple, and planning of a 1:1 iPad and MacBook K-12 program. Dr. Griffith’s passion for teaching is reflected in having been twice awarded “Most Influential Teacher” at Montgomery Bell Academy. He also taught an English Literature class at Battle Ground Academy. Dr. Griffith holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Middlebury College in English, a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in English (Modern British Literature) from Oxford University and a M.A. from Columbia University in Educational Leadership. His experience at BGA, a Kindergarten through 12th grade, coeducational day school similar to Ranney in size and structure, included campus expansion, program development, and the creation of new technologies in teaching and learning. Dr. Griffith also guided the school through two successful strategic plans. Before his role as Headmaster at BGA, Dr. Griffith’s experience was rooted in academic leadership as Upper School Head at the Miami Valley School in Dayton, Ohio. In addition to receiving the NAIS Fellowship for Aspiring Heads, National Endowment for the Humanities institutes and seminars, and a Fulbright Memorial Fund Fellowship, Dr. Griffith was selected for the Klingenstein Heads of Schools program for 2013. According to Mr. Price, “Dr. Griffith has a track record in creating environments that help young people flourish – in academics, the arts, and athletics. His own character and values are aligned with our school’s mission, and he has the desire to pursue our firm commitment to excellence.”

Reaching All in Need Everyday “Thanksgiving food drives, Holiday Gift Drives and Family Assistance have been our main focus for many years now.
I
t all began with Patti and Matt Dickens, who held a holiday gift drive for a family who had lost a loved one on September 11, 2001. Each year the gift drive grew, as did the caring individuals who volunteered to help. As time went on, the RAINE Foundation was able to provide for more and more children until they eventually expanded to Thanksgiving food drives and family assistance. Since its early beginnings, RAINE has positively impacted the Bayshore community. Their mission statement is clear. “RAINE (Reaching All in Need Everyday) is a 501 (c) (3) organization established in 2001 to assist children and their families who are in crisis.” The organization is based in Hazlet, New Jersey. RAINE President Mike Fabozzi noted that the youngest members, known as Drops of RAINE have always been included during the Food and Gift drive. “They help sort the food and gifts, wrap, package and set up for delivery. It teaches children at a young age the value of volunteering your time to help people who are in need. We are working on making Drops of RAINE an official club in the Hazlet School system.” Before Hurricane Sandy hit, RAINE was assisting those in need. Mike explained, “Thanksgiving food drives, Holiday Gift Drives and Family Assistance have been our main focus for many years now. In 2011, we helped 350 families during Thanksgiving and Christmas which more than doubled post Sandy. We help children and their families in crisis throughout the year as well in

many other ways; paying bills, purchasing clothing, house needs, and medical assistance.” Once Sandy hit this area, volunteers of the RAINE Foundation moved quickly. Patti shared what they did. “We immediately setup a shelter for displaced families at Holy Family School and provided food clothing blankets pillow and baby items to families in need. We gained permission to open up the Beers Street School kitchen in Hazlet and began providing hot meals for first responders throughout the Bayshore community and Monmouth County, as well as 10 senior centers and displaced families. We provided 20,000 meals per day at our peak for the first 14 days following the storm. We transitioned our meals to Red Cross. We also deployed organized teams of 100-plus volunteers into devastated areas throughout the Bayshore towns of (Keyport, Union Beach, Keansburg, and Port Monmouth, delivering meals, water, and a variety of supplies. We then organized clean-up crews that did initial debris removal and house gutting for hundreds of homes.” Before long it was time for RAINE Foundation’s holiday gift drive and on December 19, 2012, 33 Santas were dispatched from Children’s Wear Centre Outlet in Hazlet to provide gifts for over 600 families. This drive was like no other due to Sandy. Donations came from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts and Florida. An estimated 25,000-plus gifts, of which hundreds of volunteers shopped, sorted and wrapped. Additionally, a few other organizations requested about 300 gifts.

inety years of serving the community is a long time, yet the Kiwanis Club of Keyport is already preparing for the next 90 years! Organized on July 25, 1923, Keyport Kiwanis was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Asbury Park. Following the purpose and mission of Kiwanis International, the members have dedicated themselves to serving the children of the world and improving the quality of life worldwide. On August 3, Kiwanis Club of Keyport celebrated their ninetieth anniversary, which had occurred on July 25, 2013, with a dinner and program held at the Town and Country Inn, Highway 35 in Keyport. Seventy officers, directors, members, guests and dignitaries in attendance included the 2012-2013 Officers of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International past Governors, Lieutenant Governors, Kiwanians who held or are holding positions in the New Jersey District, as well as members from 14 Kiwanis Clubs. Freeholder John Curley presented the group with a Proclamation from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Kiwanis Club of Keyport President Michael Ellithorpe read a congratulatory letter received by Governor Chris Christi and a Proclamation received from the New Jersey Legislature. Keyport Mayor Harry Aumack congratulated the group and current Asbury Park Kiwanis Club President Eugene Padauno shared that the early-day organizers of this club would be proud of all that the Keyport Kiwanis members had accomplished throughout their 90 years.

Through the generosity of Kiwanis Clubs in the New Jersey District and throughout the country, funds were presented to Gail and Bill Bechtoldt, co-ordinators of the Jersey Shore Work Camp so they could further their work on homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy; and gift cards were also presented for distribution to those affected by Sandy. One of the memorable moments of the evening was a presentation to Percy Washington, who was given a Legion of Honor Certificate and pin for 50 years of membership in the Kiwanis Club of Keyport. Leo Mania, Jack Caddle, and Albert McGregor were given Legion of Honor Certificates and pins for their 30 years of membership. Kiwanis Club of Keyport has donated more than one million dollars and contributed tens of thousands of hours of service during their 90 years of service. They have donated funds and volunteered services for Desert Storm and 911; during times of natural disasters which most recently have been the Japan Sunami, Hurricane Sandy, and the Oklahoma Tornados. Kiwanis Club of Keyport meets every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Town and Country Inn, Highway 35, Keyport. They sponsor Key Clubs in Keyport, Keansburg, Matawan, and Marine Academy of Science and Technology High Schools, as well as Monmouth University Circle K Club.
