abor Day has come and gone, summer is officially over in our eyes. This time of year happens to be my favorite, the weather is undoubtedly (in my mind) the most pleasurable and the events – like Oktoberfests and harvest festivals – are always a good time! It’s also a transitioning period for everyone, especially parents. The planning of 12hour days to keep the kids occupied is over. Late summer and fall are the perfect back drop to shop, stroll and unwind with your friends and family, and we have compiled some of the more interesting events around Monmouth County on pages 12 and 14 of this issue.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and I urge everyone to go gold for September – whether wrapping a gold bow around a tree in your front yard or as simple as making your social media profile picture a gold ribbon. Times Square has even agreed to go gold, and One World Trade is also doing the same. Every year since that fateful Tuesday morning in 2001, we remember those who perished on September 11th. This year marks the 13th anniversary, Monmouth County lost many friends that day, and I hope and pray for peace and healing for those families and friends that lost loved ones.

We must always remember,

48th Annual Keyport Firemen’s Fair STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN

Nothing says summer like lemonade, funnel cakes and firemen; at least in Keyport. The 48th annual Firemen’s Fair ran from July 27 through August 2 at the Keyport Waterfront. It was a fun week of carnival games, live entertainment, delicious food and a great way to support the brave people of the Keyport Fire Department.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

It takes a full year to plan the event but David Olsen, the fair chairman, and his team always pulls off an amazing job getting every tiny detail just right. This year featured new food and a couple new rides for family fun. Every night was packed with residents and area locals looking for a great family night out. The more popular nights for the fair were Bracelet Nights, where fair-goers could buy a bracelet and get on all of the rides as many times as they wanted for free. The week-long event culminated with the IHOP Pancake Eating Contest and fireworks.

However, there is no rest for the weary. As soon as the fair ended, Olsen and his team started planning for next year. This is a truly amazing experience for families, friends and the firemen of Keyport and the best part: it is just a short drive from wherever people are in Monmouth County. “We’re here in town; you have a good time, spend time with your family, have some good food, ride some amusements; it is great entertainment.” said Olsen.

CHANGE YOUR BODY

In Just 55 Minutes A Week!

B

ecoming physically active is one of the most important steps someone can take to improve their long-term health and quality of life. While 150-minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity is the most beneficial across all spectrums, some physical activity is better than none; especially for sedentary individuals who are just beginning to incorporate exercise into their daily or weekly routine. For this reason, Meridian Fitness & Wellness has launched a revolutionary new small group exercise program which gets participants to engage in just 55 minutes of physical activity per week: Prep55. So, what is Prep55? According to Erin Walsh, Personal Training Director at Meridian Fitness & Wellness in Hazlet, Prep55 stands for Physical Readiness Exercise Program. “Prep55 is a beginner or novice program that focuses on foundational exercises, proper mechanics and lifting techniques for safe and effective workouts. The program is comprised of two 25-minute small group exercise sessions each week, for 8 weeks. In addition, each participant receives personalized nutrition counseling and fitness evaluations at the beginning and end of the program.” Is it really possible to improve your fitness level in just 55 minutes per week? The experts at Meridian Fitness & Wellness say, YES! “This program was professionally developed to introduce effective exercise habits, support healthy

dietary changes and educate participants about creating sustainable lifestyle changes,” says Erin. “Together, these things can make a profound difference in people’s health and fitness…not to mention how they feel about themselves.” How does Prep55 work? Often times novice fitness enthusiasts become complacent in their exercise routines creating fitness plateaus and reducing motivation to continue exercising. Prep55 focuses on changing those routines by

building on fundamental exercises. As the participant slowly progresses and becomes more proficient in the movements, they will notice considerable gains in both cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. Is Prep55 right for me? Prep55 is designed to be effective for all participants regardless of age or current fitness level. Giordano, who spearheaded the initial launch of the program this past June, says that one of the benefits of the Prep55 program is the personalized attention and

PROVIDED BY JULIANNE DODS, VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS

support given to each participant in a fun a motivational environment. “Anyone can succeed with Prep55,” says Marie Hayes who, along with her son, graduated from the pilot class. “Even though the sessions are only 25 minutes, you accomplish and learn so much. Prep55 acclimates you to fundamental exercises and gives you the knowledge you need to change your life.” “If it wasn’t for Prep55, my son and I would not have achieved our goals. Together, we are more conscious of our food choices and making active lifestyle changes that are easy to implement and maintain.” Marie has continued to explore other Small Group classes, while her son, Lloyd, now meets with a trainer one-onone. “Prep55 made such a tremendous impact on both of our lives,” says Lloyd. “I was not in the best condition when I began the program, but Prep55 starts each participant off at a level and pace that is comfortable and slowly progresses you into more challenging workouts that aren’t intimidating.” How do I get started? The cost to enroll in Prep55 is just $79 per person… less than $5 per session. It is open to Meridian Fitness & Wellness members and non-members. Classes are forming now and kick off September 22, 2014. Space is limited, so register now by calling 732.335.4200! JACQUIE LEE CONCERT BENEFITS UNION BEACH

I

n a special concert billed as, “Two Towns-One VoiceOne Mission,” Colts Neck native Jacquie Lee, who was first runner up on The Voice, performed before an audience of about 800 people. The concert was held at the Robert J. Collins Arena, Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, and will benefit the residents of Union Beach who are still struggling to rebuild following Super Storm Sandy. The concert was hosted by Operation Provide Comfort (OPC), a Colts Neck-based organization that started with a few people but quickly grew to include over 30 Colts Neck residents as well as the support of the Colts Neck Business Association. One of the founding members Glen Dalakian said, “OPC has been there since the beginning. When OPC Founder Lt. Col. James Sfayer, USMC Retired approached me about the concept, we were all still in the throes of helping people recover in the days and weeks immediately following the storm in 2012. We committed to a long-term plan to help our neighbors and have been at it ever since.” Union Beach Administrator Jennifer Maier shared this, “Immediately after Super Storm Sandy hit, Operation Provide Comfort (OPC) was founded by a strong group of Colts Neck residents to assist Union Beach in the recovery process. It is so exciting for Union Beach residents to have Jacquie Lee volunteer her time to perform in order to raise funds for OPC. OPC always asks ‘What do you need now?’ as the needs of Union Beach residents have changed over time from immediate survival to rebuild efforts.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Union Beach is so grateful for OPC and their caring and dedication through this difficult time. Eighty-five percent of our homes were flooded, 300 homes have been demolished. We still have 400 families displaced, and we want to bring them home.” Founder of OPC Lt. Col. James Sfayer, USMC, Ret., explained, “Our focus on helping Union Beach is far from over. With this concert, we hope to raise awareness that there is still so much more to do.” Sfayer said they just found out there are 150 more homes that need to be demolished and the emotional impact that has had on the Union Beach residents has been overwhelming. Sfayer emphasized, “This concert was just the beginning, not the end. We wanted to raise awareness that the rebuilding is not over; that there is still so much more to do, and that the need for funding is still there. We (OPC) won’t go away until Union Beach tells us to go away. We are in this for as long as it takes.” Sfayer said of the concert, “It was a great success. Jacquie Lee presented Union Beach with a check for $30,000 from the concert.” Lee said she couldn’t imagine not having a home to come to. Being able to perform in concert to benefit the many families of Union Beach who are still displaced was important to her. For more information, and to make donations, please visit www.opcunionbeach.org or https://www. facebook.com/OperationProvideComfortUnionBeach.

Skate Your Way Over to Hazlet

KEYPORTFEST 5K Keyport Borough Recreation Commission and the Keyport Spanish American Club are proud to present the Eighth Annual KeyportFest 5K.

STORY ADILAH KHAN

On September 20, 2014, Hazlet will be holding its Inaugural Skate Jam. Originally being held in Keyport, the contest was moved to its neighboring town by Christine Matarese, a Keyport Recreation member, when it was announced that Keyport had cancelled its plan of building a skate park. Determined to give back to the children who devoted their time and effort to skateboarding, Matarese took the initiative to organize an event where they could flaunt their skills on well-constructed ramps, instead of makeshift ones. With the assistance of Cliff Moore, the president of Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative and the Hazlet Recreation representative for the upcoming jam, the competition was successfully prepared in the new skating arena. In a brief interview, Moore believed that the jam would help the youth spend their time wisely. “I think any activity at all that keeps kids active, off the streets, and safe is worth doing.” Along with that, he stated that the jam would bring about many opportunities and open new doors. “I think that it will showcase some of the great things that we have in Hazlet that people don’t know about, it’ll utilize some of the facilities in Hazlet that are underutilized and it will introduce a lot of new children into skating.” In order to compete, participants are required to pay a small admission entry in which they become eligible to win prizes. Skaters can either sign-up early by printing out the registration form at www.keyportonline.com or register the day of the Skate Jam at 12:00 p.m. All contestants would be sectioned into groups, based on their-age, where they would then challenge one another for the ultimate reward. Those who are not avid skaters still have a chance to win something through the multiple give-a-ways that will take place throughout the day. Moreover, there will be an educational workshop that has included safety tips in the past years. Children from other towns are invited to attend. The skate jam will take place at 1766 Union Avenue in Hazlet. Whether a skater or not, you’re guaranteed to have lots of fun!

Why Join a Barter Exchange? Do you wish your business had more customers? Joining a barter exchange could be a great boost to expanding your business growth and increasing market share. The #1 reason a business ought to participate in a barter network is because they want more customers. If your company has capacity to accept additional business, whether it’s an attorney with open billable hours in their day, a hotel with unsold room nights, or open tables at the restaurant, gaining additional market share is the primary purpose and advantage to buy and sell in a barter exchange. If you’ve bartered on your own, you’ll find that belonging to a barter network gives you the chance to make additional exchanges more easily, and allows for more equitable trades, since you get to barter with lots of members in the Network, not just one-on-one. Being active in a barter network gives you a competitive edge. Members patronize participating members, because they save cash when they hire someone in their club. They pay for products and services with barter dollars, and spend their U.S. dollars for mortgage and taxes. When a member joins a barter network, they often receive members-only access to the membership directory, opportunities to attend business networking events with other barter club members, and membership cards to shop. Most barter exchanges offer customer support to market and promote your company. As a barter member generates dollars in this alternative currency, they begin to offset current cash expenses, spending barter dollars instead. Often, new members use their new revenue stream for immediate, ongoing purchases, such as advertising, daycare or water delivery. Others save to pay for a wedding or their child’s orthodontia, and some spend on the pleasures of life, including massage, fine jewelry, limousines, pizza and sushi. Do check references before joining a barter exchange, and make sure they offer a money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied. Faye Alba is the Director of BarterPays!. For more information about membership, visit barterpays.com or call 732.364.4614.

First Baptist of Keyport Events First Baptist Church of Keyport will hold a Hymn Sing on Sunday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to this event. The organ was built by the Moller Company in 1918 with two manuals and 11 ranks of pipes, and completely restored in 1994 by Richard Kurtz. The organ’s voicing is a pretty, mellow sound, a soft 8-foot Aeoline stop was replaced by a brighter 1 1/3 foot quinte. The pipes range in size from two inches to sixteen feet. Most of the chamber facade pipes speak, but a few are for show. Chimes located on both sides of the facade, were added in the late 1970’s. Following the Hymn Sing will be an Ice Cream Social. Kicking off the fall season will be a Men’s Breakfast Fellowship and a Ladies Brunch on Saturday, September 13 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. - both include breakfast, fellowship, and a time of teaching The church is located at 45 Main Street in Keyport. For more information, please call the church at 732.264.0735.

HAZLET HAPPENINGS PROVIDED BY MAYOR JAMES DINARDO

The Hazlet Township Committee has been busy this year, and we’d like to update our residents! By a vote of 3 to 2 the Hazlet Township Committee passed a road improvements program to begin shortly, in the amount of $1.8 million, plus more for next year and all from current savings in our budget. We were able to keep the Municipal (Hazlet) tax rate the same for two years, no increase. If you compare last year’s bill to this year’s, you will see that Hazlet’s tax rate has not gone up at all. Hazlet township residents will also see their sewer bill reduced by $5.00/quarter. The Hazlet Township Committee saved the township $412,000 by renegotiating employee medical coverage. We have applied for a Green Acres Grant for multiple park improvements and equipment for $740,000.00 We have instituted a P.P.I. committee (Program for Public Information), which will help us in working toward credit for flood insurance. The township is an active participant of National Flood Insurance Programs (NFIP). We have been recognized for our voluntary incentive program of implementing flood plan management practices that exceed Federal minimum requirements to provide protection from flooding. Our continuing proactive efforts have resulted in insurance premiums in our zone, and 10% in non-flood zones. Our expert in this department is Annie Eng, who because of her knowledge, was hired by FEMA during the aftermath of Sandy. The Township Committee has instituted a five-year tax abatement for homeowners and businesses for their building improvements. Our department of Public Works has been redesigned to include a Sewer department and a Buildings & Grounds department, thus assuring more efficient services to our tax payers. Joint-board effectiveness. Still looking for efficiency.

LOCAL DAD PUBLISHES A COOKBOOK FOR DIVORCED DADS

I

f you are a divorced father of young children, sharing time with your kids on weekends can be a joy. Except when it’s time to eat. Let’s face it, a lot of men aren’t comfortable in the kitchen and don’t have a lot of experience preparing family meals. So when the kids ask, “What’s for dinner?” many newly single dads resort to fast food and pizza.

Dining out can get expensive. And cheaper options like fast food and takeout aren’t healthy meals for growing kids. That’s why single dad and self-taught cook Ken Lowenstein of Keyport, put together “The Divorced Dads Cookbook,” a collection of easy-to-prepare recipes that are sure to please even the fussiest eaters. “I learned by trial and error,” said Ken. “Eventually, I had some tried and true recipes that my kids and I enjoyed preparing and eating together. We shared a lot of great times together preparing and eating meals, and we have a lot of great memories.” “The Divorced Dad’s Cookbook” blends personal stories about parenting and cooking with practical advice and recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The recipes vary from simple, such as Mac and Cheese, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Tuna Salad, Pancakes to a little more advanced (but still easy) like Sauerbraten, Cedar Plank Salmon and Crab Cakes. “I’ve heard from a lot of single dads who said that the book gave them the courage to try cooking for the first time,” Ken said. “Even if you’re not divorced – or not a dad – this is a handy book for anyone who wants to try to prepare a meal for their family.” Ken Lowenstein lives in Keyport and is a father of two grown kids who still ask him to make some of their favorite meals. When he’s not cooking, he works as a Systems Engineer for a major technology firm and spends weekends teaching soccer to kids for the local parks system.

The “Divorced Dads Cookbook” is available on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble website. For more information, visit the Divorced Dads Cookbook page on Facebook.

KEYPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT HOLDS NATIONAL NIGHT OUT EVENT STORY SUSAN MURPHY

Keyport Kiwanis member volunteers

Jersey Shore Subs

“Garden Party” to Benefit Keyport GardenWalk The Keyport Yacht Club will serve as the venue for the annual “Garden Party” to benefit Keyport GardenWalk on September 21, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The afternoon includes refreshments, cash bar and a silent auction of items such as Broadway theatre tickets, luxury cosmetics and perfumes, gift baskets and gift certificates donated by area businesses and restaurants, commissioned artwork and much more. In addition to the silent auction, a new feature this year will be the “Potting Shed Boutique” of Unearthed Treasures - new and barely used items available for sale.

Keyport GardenWalk Chairperson Clare Skeen said, “In addition to the generosity of our KGW sponsors, the “Garden Party” fundraiser is a primary source of funding for Keyport GardenWalk. The generosity of our sponsors and the success of this fundraiser enables us to offer Keyport GardenWalk as a free event”. Keyport GardenWalk is a free, self-guided walking and biking tour of public and private gardens in Keyport taking place annually in early June. Keyport GardenWalk 2014 welcomed 2,300 visitors from the tri-state area and has been cited in a national magazine as an example of garden tourism. Tickets for the “Garden Party” are $25 and are available at Uncle Louie G and Blue River Market – both shops on West Front Street in Keyport - or by emailing info@ keyportgardenwalk.org.

Worship Out of the Box: Torah Trek On July 26, 2014, twenty members of Temple Shalom of Aberdeen met at Holmdel Park for a first annual Torah Trek. Led by Ed and Susan Miller, the group explored Judaism and Nature using their senses, silence, meditation, prayer and song. Enlightening and inspirational, a second Trek is being planned…possibly as a semi-annual event. All adults are encouraged to participate. For information, email Ed at speshuled1215@optonline.net.

BREAST HEALTH:

Keyport Senior Center Held Art Show

Expert Answers to Your Questions

PROVIDED BY MERIDIAN HEALTH

While many of us know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many women still have unanswered questions about early detection and mammograms. Fortunately, breast experts Sunita Nankoo, M.D., and Catherine Campo, D.O., of the Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital Women’s Centers are here to answer your questions about breast health. What are my options when it comes to my mammogram? “Digital mammography is considered the standard for mammograms today,” says Dr. Nankoo. “However, both Riverview and Bayshore utilize tomosynthesis, commonly referred to as 3D mammography.” The latest in breast cancer screening, 3D mammography produces three-dimensional images of each individual layer of the breast, making abnormal tissue more visible, and highlighting suspicious masses. Dr. Nankoo explains. “This allows us to more effectively pinpoint the size, shape, and location of any abnormalities.” What are the benefits of receiving a mammogram? “3D mammography is an effective tool to detect breast cancer before lumps can be felt or symptoms appear,” says Dr. Campo. “Early detection of breast cancer not only helps provide a woman with more options, but also increases her chances of having the best possible outcome.” Now, thanks to 3D mammography, radiologists at Riverview and Bayshore can rule out irregularities that would have raised concern in 2D mammograms, reducing the need to call women back for additional imaging. “Now, women can have peace of mind knowing their mammography was as comprehensive as possible,” adds Dr. Campo. What should a woman expect when having a mammogram? Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital have transformed their Centers into a place where women have access to the best health care in a spa-like setting, close to home. Designed by women for women, each Center offers exceptional quality care in an environment of caring. Focused on what our customers deem most important to them, our centers offer the complete health care package. In an environment akin to a spa the Center offers women a one-stop shopping approach to care with fully digital mammography services with CAD technology, a comprehensive array of diagnostic services, access to total breast care through the continuum, as well as evening and weekend hours that will accommodate any lifestyle. The event begins with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. and includes a silent auction, spectacular entertainment, and a five-course dinner featuring selections from some stars of Monmouth County’s culinary landscape. Their roster features a number of dynamic women hailing directly from the Broadway casts of such shows as Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages and Jersey Boys. Dinner will include hors d’oeuvres and several courses prepared by some of Monmouth County’s top dining spots. Among the featured restaurants are Ama Ristorante, Danny’s Steak House, David Burke Fromagerie, Soul Kitchen, Teak, The Bistro, The Cheese Cave and Zoe, plus the Executive Chefs from The Molly Pitcher Inn and The Oyster Point Hotel. “A Taste of Broadway on the Promenade will be the grand finale of Waves of Support,” said Navesink Business Group founder Robert Lowe. “Part of the evening will be dedicated to honoring several organizations and individuals who have made significant efforts in aiding our local communities.” The Molly Pitcher Inn will be offering a special rate of $159.00 per night for guests who would like to stay at the sophisticated Red Bank landmark.
