all has officially arrived, bringing with it crisp weather, harvest festivals, opportunities to visit local farms and pick-your-own apples or pumpkins. The fall foliage will soon be at its peak. Make some time to drive up north and marvel at the magnificent colors Mother Nature casts upon the leaves. It is bound to relax you!
October is breast cancer awareness month. Everyone has in some way been affected by this insidious disease. Participate in the Breast Cancer Walk or wear pink to show your support. Be aware and be there for those struggling with breast cancer and remember those who have succumbed to it. Fight like a girl! The end of October brings us to one year post-Sandy. Homes were lost but close-knit communities were formed in the aftermath of Sandy. Many people did not know their true strength until Sandy; and the outpouring of love and commitment for those in need still has not diminished. So, sit back, take a bite of a freshly picked apple, and let Community Magazine take you on a visual and documented trip through this fall’s festivities! Best,

New Studio Helps Dancers Find Their Inner Voice Her vision for her studio has always remained focused on the technical building blocks to proper dance training that adds essential elements to students’ education as their bodies physically mature and their dance vocabulary grows.
SAMANTHA MAGUIRE ZALESKI, a local resident of Hazlet with her husband Tom and their children Harper and August, has more than 20 years of experience teaching dance in the community. She has always dreamed of having her own studio, so when the opportunity presented itself this past May, she was eager to get started. Essential Elements Dance Studio (EEDS) opened its doors late this summer and almost instantly has struck the right chord with the dance community. She believes, “Dance is an outlet of expression no matter what the level and every dancer will be encouraged to find her inner voice and strengths,” and the community seems to be responding. In a few short weeks, she has not only attracted a thriving student base of dancers, she has also attracted a highly credentialed teaching staff, who are trained and active in the NYC dance community. Amanda Esposito, who has trained at the Joffrey Ballet and presently with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, teaches ballet; Brandon M. Girouard, who works professionally as a dancer, choreographer, competition judge and convention facilitator throughout the country, teaches tap and jazz funk; and Stephanie Hueston-Paden, who is a mom of three little ones and the founder/president of Coping with Laryngomalacia Non-Profit Organization, teaches the beginning essentials to 3-5 year olds. Each member of the EEDS staff believes in the brand vision and will continue to empower each student with these values. One of the many things that makes EEDS unique is the incorporation of Progressions Classes which is a main focus in the curriculum and growth of the dancers through open level classes. They are designed to focus on strength and conditioning, understanding positioning of the body and increased flexibility of the

growing adolescent body, which is key to creating a well-educated student. Through her connections within the dance community, Samantha has also created a cooperative learning environment with NY/NJ area dance companies and surrounding studios through the Master Class Series. The Master Class Series has different dance professionals coming to the studio to teach classes to the EEDS students to maintain the students’ exposure to different teachers and different teaching styles. In the last month alone, EEDS has welcomed Candice Mancini and Sophia Marzocca from In the Spotlight, Waldwick, NJ. The complete Master Class schedule can be found on the studio’s website. Samantha has also reached out to the local community and is working with local schools’ Dance Teams – specifically the St. John Vianney Dance Team, under the leadership of Miss Evelyn Keehn. EEDS maintains an established dress code and environment to ensure the emphasis is on the dancer, her body positioning and her performance. The brand new facility is equipped with suspended Marley floors and designed around many eco-friendly elements such as a water filtration system, a beautiful reclaimed wooden ballet barre from Washington state and a paperless administration. Here the families can make payments or order EEDS dancewear from the comfort of their homes or from the convenience of smartphones & tablets. Registration for Master Classes may be done on the studio website – www.EssentialElementsDanceStudio.com. EEDS will be holding auditions for the Atticus Dance Company on November 24, 2013 for this premier season. Classes are filling up steadily and EEDS has the space available to expand as soon as it becomes necessary.

The Keyport Fest 5K Run celebrated its seventh year on September 21, 2013. The run was started in 2007 by the Keyport Recreation Commission (KRC). Nancy Jones was appointed to the KRC in the spring of 2007. She was asked this year to be STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN

ones, said that this year had a new record for participating runners: 221 pre-entered runners, and more were coming. By the time the race started at 8:30 a.m. there was a total of 322 people, ages eight to seventy-five competing in the 3.1 mile course. The race started by 32 West Salon and traveled all through Keyport before finishing at Keyport Fishery. The weather was cloudy with some sprinkles of rain, but that would not have stopped the runners. An award ceremony was presented by Jones and Councilman Sheridan after the race had ended. The first place male runner was Ken Kropac of Lake Como with a time of 17:34. The first place female was Jill Evarts of Middletown with a time of 19:44. This was Evarts third time coming in first female in the seven year history of the race. This year also featured runners from Keyport High School Field Hockey Team. Some of the members took home prizes in the age group awards. They run every year, along with their coaches. Major sponsors of the race include Keyport IHOP, Pine Belt Nisan, 32 West Salon, Bayada Home Health Care, Hazlet Family Care Walk-In Medical Center and Poor Johns Apollo Sewer. The Keyport Spanish/American club has some members come out to help with the race and provide music. Jones appreciated everyone coming out to run and volunteer. “It’s a nice event, gets people to help out the town, it’s always a nice day.”

Message from the Mayor Joseph Belasco, Mayor, Hazlet Township
G
reat things are happening in Hazlet. When I was sworn in as Mayor last January, I told my friends and family that I would make two promises: that I would work hard to protect Hazlet’s quality of life and keep taxes down so my children and grandchildren can call our community home. Nearly a year later, I’m pleased to report that we have made significant progress toward those goals. Hazlet is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. This year, I’ve done my best to keep our streets clean and our families safe. You may have noticed the improvements to our neighborhood parks. We have added benches, fencing, and playground equipment in order to create a space for young and old alike to relax and enjoy our community. I am committed to not only improving Veterans Park, but all of our neighborhood parks, which are targeted under this improvement program. Before the year is out, watch out for the Sewer Building located on Brookside Avenue to be demolished in order to enhance the park adjacent to Cove Road School. What I’m most proud of with respect to our quality of life is the terrific job the Public Works Department has done cleaning up our overgrown jug handles so that Hazlet puts its best foot forward to those driving down Routes 35 and 36. Equally important, this summer we added nine new officers to the Hazlet Police Department. These new officers are men of integrity who were born and raised in our town. And from a practical perspective, they give us more bang for our buck as they replace senior officers with higher salaries.
We are also committed to keeping Hazlet an affordable community. For the first time ever, we returned the surplus from payments on sewer bills to residents and were able to reduce quarterly payments to $99. And do me a favor: take a look at your tax bill. I went through our budget line by line. This year, for the first time in living memory, most homeowners will pay less on the municipal portion of our property tax bills. That’s the kind of common sense budgeting that will continue into the future. Moving forward, the central challenge we face is attracting businesses along the Route 35 and 36 corridors. New businesses can decrease the property tax burden on homeowners. To do this, we recently formed an Economic Development Committee to serve as ambassadors to business and attract investment in our community. We have made significant strides in 2013 and we have done it together. I am grateful to all the residents – volunteer fire and first aid, parents involved in the P.T.O., seniors helping at the Cullen Center – who have volunteered their time and energy to the causes we hold dear. And finally, on a personal note, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve as Mayor of Hazlet Township. It’s my great privilege and honor. Together, we can do great things.
Taxes at a Glance
Hazlet Welcomes New Police Officers
Homeowners may notice that property tax bills are divided into five categories: school, municipal, county, fire, and open space. In late 2012, Hazlet Township performed a legally required property reassessment to bring property assessments in line with current market conditions. While almost all properties in town experienced a decrease in their assessments, not all assessments decreased at the same rate. As a result, those properties that had a decrease in their assessment that was less than the township average most likely saw an increase in their property taxes. Conversely, those properties that had a decrease in their assessment that was greater than the township average saw a decrease in their taxes. Please note that while the Board of Education and Fire District portion of taxes increased in 2013, the municipal budget did not.
On August 6, Hazlet Township welcomed nine new officers to the Police Department. Congratulations to Robert Dickens, Patrick Kiley, Nicholash Greene, Patrick Wood, Richard Jaeger, Dane Frattalone, Nicholas Logothetis, Richard Wilhelm and Charleigh Dufford.
Stay Informed! All residents are encouraged to stay informed about Hazlet happenings by logging onto our web site at www.hazlettwp. org or finding us on Facebook under Hazlet Township

She was also taking donations for “PinkaLisa,” which is her team name for the Breast Cancer Walk. Three members of a five-member rock band, First To Friday, provided entertainment. The three young students did an acoustic set, singing original songs. Dana Hembling sang vocals, Mike Cappelluti played guitar and joined in on the vocals, and Billy Nally added percussion. First To Friday has performed in major venues throughout New Jersey, including the Count Basie Theater.

rom July 11 through July 14, a group of 11 locals were putting 10 months of diligent work and preparation to the ultimate test in Greenville, South Carolina to represent our state at the USA National Karate Federation’s 2013 National Championship and US Team Trials. Local Hazlet resident, four time national champion and Shihan (master instructor) Michael Buttermark, brought these young athletes from his dojo (karate school) to this prestigious championship event. Shihan Buttermark is exceedingly proud of every athlete from his 2013 team. “It took dedication and hard work but it all paid off in dividends! My athletes were rookies, but they all looked like professionals and stood out from their peers.” The following are team members from Community Magazine’s readership area:
Keyport six-year-old “wonder twins” Michael and Katarina Schechter both medaled in the competition. Katarina won a Bronze medal and took home two 5th place finishes (losing out in Bronze medal matches). Michael won Silver and Bronze medals in both kumite (fighting) and kata (forms) divisions. Community Magazine readers should know that most of Michael Schechter’s opponents were typically 6 - 12 inches taller than him; however, he has the heart of a lion and shows no fear. Nine-year-old former Hazlet resident, John Castella showed great resiliency bouncing back from a loss to this year’s nation-
al champion to earn a Bronze medal in repecharge (“second chance” round) in kumite. Twelve-year-old Matawan resident Johnny Milone had a double medal yield with a Gold medal in kata and a Silver medal in kumite. Rounding out the last of the kids representing Team TKC was 14-year old Matawan resident - Demetrius Mendez. Demetrius began the nationals on day 1 with a Gold medal in kata but was narrowly edged out of medals, finishing 5th, in two additional categories. Team TKC had two adults vying for medals. Matawan resident Hector Santiago took home two medals: Gold in Okinawan kata division, Silver in Japanese kata division, and 5th place in kumite. Rounding off the team, Hazlet resident and Team TKC coach Michael Buttermark won double National Champion titles with his two Gold medals and a 7th place finish in his final division. Team TKC is always interested in hearing from anyone interested in learning quality karate instruction. They are expanding their team for the 2014 nationals. Karate training is a year-round activity where no one sits on the bench. These athletes train for competition 10 months out of the year beginning in October; and, they gain valuable ring experience by attending a handful of competitions in the New York area. If interested, please call 732.566.4852 today.

However, it is the employees’ steadfast commitment to their customers that he attributes to the store’s 75 years of success. “We are very sensitive to what [our customers] want and we’ve always been very service-oriented. Aberdeen food businesses wishing to offer outdoor dining options next year can apply to the Township now for zoning permits allowing sidewalk seating during the warm-weather season. In August, the Aberdeen Township Council approved an ordinance that allows restaurants and other food businesses in properties that permit such uses to offer outdoor dining from May 1 through October 1 of each year. The ordinance resulted from a joint effort between the Township Council, the Aberdeen Economic Business Council (EBC) and the Township’s Zoning Office. The ordinance allows a space no wider than ten feet in front of a restaurant or other food business to be sectioned off for the business’s use. The dining area cannot take up more than half of the width of the sidewalk, or more than eight feet, whichever is smaller. Tables can be up to four square feet, with two chairs, and must be placed against the wall of the building. No tables, chairs, planters, menu stands or decorations can be placed on the public portion of the sidewalk. At the end of each business day, all items associated with outside dining would have to be removed from the sidewalk. To further promote safety, the ordinance also includes specifications for permanent barricades designed to prevent vehicles from injuring diners. “Aberdeen businesses interested in incorporating outdoor dining should speak with their landlords prior to applying for the permit, as some shopping centers may have restrictions prohibiting this option and may also levy special fees,” advised Carmine Visone, Chairman of The Aberdeen Economic Business Council. “Outdoor dining is extremely popular with consumers and restaurants alike. In addition to fulfilling the demands of eligible businesses that have long wanted to offer this option, this measure should also help us attract new restaurants to Aberdeen.” “We are very pleased to have worked with the EBC, our Zoning Office and other Township officials to come up with a solution that gives restaurants and other food businesses the option to offer outside dining in a manner that won’t compromise the safety of diners, employees and passersby,” added Mayor Fred Tagliarini. “We hope to see those businesses that wish to incorporate outside dining begin to take advantage of this crowd-pleasing option next spring.”

Keyport’s Second Annual
Photo Scavenger Hunt STORY LIZZ DINNIGAN
The Keyport Central School PTO held its second-annual “Townwide Photo Scavenger Hunt and Ice Cream Party” on Friday, September 20. This popular fundraising event earned close to $500. Families joined in the 90-minute timed race, which began at the school cafeteria. The whistle blew promptly at 6:15 p.m., at which time participants took off on foot with a digital camera and list in their hand down Broad Street toward downtown and the waterfront to take 20 photos of their team. In order to win a gift certificate for taking first, second or third place, the families had to correctly take photos of
their team reflected in something, in front of any building that is clearly marked more than 100 years old, holding take-out menus from three Keyport establishments, next to a site that suffered damage from Superstorm Sandy, next to any war memorial giving the peace sign, with a water tower in the background,” and more. Upon returning to the school, forms were collected, photos checked and everyone enjoyed ice cream and drinks. The winners were the families of Melissa Regina, Lisa Rebelo and Tony DiGregorio. Due to its success, another scavenger hunt is being planned for next year.
HAZLET BUSINESS OWNERS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNES NEWLY FORMED HAZLET TOWNSHIP ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
P
resident of the Hazlet Business Owners Association Ted Koczon recently announced that a Hazlet Township Economic Development Committee was formed at the August meeting of the Hazlet Business Owners Association (HBOA). He noted that the committee was formed because of the number of businesses that are struggling and closing along the Route 35 and Route 36 highway corridors, he said. He explained further. “The idea for the Hazlet Township Economic Development Committee has been in the works for over a year and Cliff Moore, owner of Keyport IHOP on Route 36, was the catalyst to bringing it to fruition.” The members of the Committee include Co-Chairs Cliff Moore (IHOP) and John Dwyer (Bethany Liquors), as well as Victor Scudiery, a multiple commercial property owner in Hazlet; John McCarthy, who has a Route 36 business; and James Pallitto, who has a Route 35 business. This dedicated volunteer group plans to create opportunities for economic development through desirable business growth and expansion, as well as retention and attraction, that will assist in maintaining the quality of life in the Township of Hazlet in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Moore explained some of the ways in which the committee plans to do this. “By getting vacant buildings functional and businesses operating it will help the local economy. It will create jobs and pay higher property taxes which will help in stabilizing home property taxes and possibly lower them. The additional revenue can be used by the township committee to improve or
32
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
add to existing services. It will improve the appearance of the area which in turn adds value to surrounding properties.” Koczon added, “As business owners along the Route 35 and Route 36 corridors in Hazlet, we are very concerned about the economic future of Hazlet. When you look at the two highways, there are many vacant commercial properties that have been sitting for quite some time. On Route 36, the old Bradlee’s/ Foodtown property has been vacant for almost 16 years; Holy Family school, ShopRite (although it has moved to Route 35), Branchbrook, Complete Tire and Auto, and many others. On Route 35, we have Frank’s Nursery, the old Lone Star Restaurant, which is actually under renovation as a medical facility, and many others. Our goal is to partner with the town of Hazlet and help to contact and attract new businesses to come to Hazlet. We are fortunate to have people such as Victor Scudiery, owner of IEI, Airport Plaza and many other local properties; John Conti, Shore Café; Tom Kelly, Complete Tire and Auto, and many other local business owners to brainstorm with to find ways to keep Hazlet healthy, prosperous and successful heading into the future.” Once the committee has a more defined vision and understanding of all the resources and incentives available a meeting open to the entire business community will be announced, noted Moore. “We will be conducting surveys of the businesses and residents and having many meetings and forums to better understand the needs and types of businesses and services would thrive in the area,” he added.

Bayshore Lunch Program STORY JENNA M. DORSI
Co-directors of the Bayshore Lunch Program are Doreen Minutelli and Nancy Mester, who have been involved with the program in some way since 1996.
T
he Bayshore Lunch program is a nonprofit organization that provides a warm lunch to those in need. Meals can be received every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. The program feeds roughly 45 residents of the Bayshore area per day. “We’re just feeding people in need of a meal,” said Doreen Minutella. Minutella and Nancy Mester are the current codirectors, and have been involved with program, in some way, since 1996. “People in need of food, and fellowship,” added Mester. The Bayshore Lunch Program began in 1994 and was based out of St. Mark’s Church in Keansburg. It later became an incorporated entity under that name. The soup kitchen was forced to relocate, in 2012, after Hurricane Sandy and has been at its current address since February. It is now found at the fellowship hall of the Community Church on Warren Street in Keyport.

At its last location, the group was able to provide meals six days a week. Now that the program has been successfully reestablished, the Bayshore Lunch Program organizers are looking to the future. “Our first goal is to get to [serving] five days a week,” said Mester. This might soon be accomplished with the church’s imminent building of a nearby food pantry. In addition to the meals, a nurse from the local Visiting Nurse Association visits every Friday. The nurse will answer healthrelated queries, check blood pressure, and administer flu shots. Representatives from New Jersey Hope and Healing also visit to provide counseling for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the group also did what it could to give back. Workers who were in the area to help rebuild storm-damaged homes were welcomed to a hot meal. “That was just our small contribution to the rebuilding effort,” said Mester For more information on the Bayshore Lunch Program, or how you can make a donation, visit www.KitchenAtStMarks.org.
