I’m IMPORTANT

I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”

The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

utumn has officially arrived, bringing with it crisp weather, harvest festivals, opportunities to visit local farms to pick-your-own apples or pumpkins. The fall foliage will soon be at its peak, and I am making it a priority to drive up north, perhaps upstate New York, to marvel at the magnificent colors Mother Nature casts upon the leaves and perhaps visit a quaint town or two for some shopping and fresh air. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, everyone has in some way been affected by this disease. I know so many women who have fought like hell and survived, and unfortunately know ladies who have lost the fight. In this issue, CM had the pleasure of meeting Linda Grant, who shared with us one part of her breast cancer journey (page 10). Until November,

Garden Party Fundraiser Sells Out

pproximately 100 fans and friends of Keyport GardenWalk attended a “Garden Party” fundraiser to benefit the event at the Keyport Yacht Club on September 21, 2014. Guests of the event were able to bid on over 70 silent auction items as well as purchase new and barely used items at the “Potting Shed Boutique”.

“This fundraiser serves as a very important source of funding for Keyport GardenWalk,” said KGW Chairperson, Clare Skeen. “We are committed to keeping Keyport GardenWalk a free event and the success of this fundraiser helps us fulfill that commitment”. One of the most popular auction items at the event was a five-course dinner for six people at an historic waterfront Keyport home. The winning bidder was 2015 Keyport GardenWalk Major Sponsor Mg Construction Inc. owner, Nelson Martinho. Guests were served ice cream treats by tuxedoed waiters – the owners of Uncle Louie G in Keyport, John Haley and Vinnie Mazella. “John and Vinnie not only served, but also donated the ice cream. Our Keyport businesses and restaurants are always so generous and supportive donating gift certificates and merchandise. This year, we also received donations from businesses and restaurants from other towns as well as from outside Monmouth County. It’s a testament to the growing popularity of Keyport GardenWalk,” said Skeen. Keyport GardenWalk is a free, walking/biking tour of public and private gardens in historic Keyport. Approximately 2,300 visitors from the tri-state area attended Keyport GardenWalk this past June to tour 35 gardens. Keyport GardenWalk 2015 will take place June 6, 2015 and June 7, 2015 and will include gardens, live music and garden talks - all free to the public. ROAD TO RECOVERY FROM

Breast Cancer Samra Plastic Surgery Supports Breast Cancer Patients on Their Journey by Offering State-ofthe-Art Breast Reconstructiion Close to Home STORY SUSAN MURPHY

S

amra Plastic Surgery, located in Holmdel and Old Bridge is comprised of highly skilled Board-Certified surgeons specializing in procedures such as General and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, Facial Surgery and Skin Resurfacing, Body Contouring, and Breast Augmentation. Building and upholding a mutual trust between patient and surgeon is extremely important to them. Asaad H. Samra, MD, FACS and Parlin resident Linda Grant developed this trust as they worked through the many steps of her breast cancer journey. Grant’s story began when her routine mammogram showed calcifications and had to be redone. Following the second mammogram, she was told she had cancer in her right breast. She found out that she had Stage 2B breast cancer and would need chemotherapy and surgery. Grant said she did not attend any support group or tell anyone at work except her boss. She continued working every day and maintained her positive outlook on life. “I kept focused on my everyday routine. I treated this as an illness and I took my medicine and just did what I had to do. That’s how I handled it. I am a very strong person and I manage pain well. I just stayed focused and wouldn’t let this interfere with living my life. I told myself I would get through this.” Grant had a mastectomy on February 14, 2013. Prior to this surgery, she had been referred to Dr. Asaad Samra with whom she discussed her options for reconstructive surgery. She chose to have implant-based reconstruction, which Dr. Samra performed at Riverview Medical Center on the same day of her mastectomy. After this initial surgery, Grant went on to have radiation therapy as part of the cancer treatment. Unfortunately, the incision above her implant opened and Dr. Samra had to replace the implant with a smaller version. Grant’s previous radiation treatments had affected her skin and negatively affected

10

the healing process. Frustratingly, the incision opened again several weeks later and Dr. Samra had to remove the second implant. In an effort to salvage the reconstruction, Dr. Samra offered Grant another option called free TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous) flap breast reconstruction. He explained, “Options for breast reconstruction include using implants or using the patient’s own tissue. The choice is a very personal one with no clear better one. There are circumstances when using one’s own tissue may be preferred, such as after radiation therapy or if an implant-based reconstruction failed. At Samra Plastic Surgery, we offer all types of breast reconstruction including the latest advances in implants as well as stateof-the art autologous reconstruction (own tissue) transplanting tissue from one area of the body to create a breast.” Grant decided on this procedure. “I knew I had to give it another try. It was very important for me to feel whole again and through the surgery, Dr. Samra gave me back a part of my body that I had lost. He was very reassuring and explained everything. I was scared but he got me through it.” Dr. Samra finds most women are concerned about being whole again as well as what their appearance will be after the surgeries. “Breast cancer patients are some of the strongest people I know, but even they can use help. I do my best to assure them and give them as clear of an idea of what things will look like,” said Dr. Samra. In January, 2014, Dr. Asaad Samra and the Samra Plastic Surgery team performed the reconstruction of Grant’s right breast using a free TRAM flap. She shared, “I was in the Intensive Care Unit for four days and Dr. Samra came twice a day. The nurses who cared for me were wonderful. He told them what to watch for and he was right there to see that everything was going well. I was discharged

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

in four days and am very fortunate that it all worked out so well. It was a long road to recovery but using my own tissues meant my body would not reject it. It is all natural, all me.” Grant said she made the right choice with this procedure and the right choice in choosing Dr. Asaad Samra as her surgeon. “He listened when I talked and was very respectful. He was right there with me every step of the way and took great care of me. I don’t think I could have done this without him. I would recommend Dr. Samra to any woman needing breast reconstruction or plastic surgery. He is a wonderful, highly skilled surgeon. If any woman can benefit from all that I went through and if my story helps women realize there are wonderful doctors such as Dr. Asaad Samra who can help you, then I am happy to have shared my journey to recovery.” Linda Grant’s surgery was elaborate and marked the first time this kind of breast reconstruction was done in Bayshore Community Hospital, said Dr. Samra. “My colleagues and I at Samra Plastic Surgery can offer our services to those who need reconstructive surgery and it can all be done right here in Holmdel at Bayshore Community Hospital.” As for Linda Grant’s surgery, Dr. Asaad Samra said, “I feel Linda’s journey highlights the resilience of the human spirit and demonstrates how together my patients and I, with perseverance, can accomplish great things.” The Holmdel office of Assad H. Samra, MD, FACS, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, is located at 733 North Beers Street, Suite U-1, Holmdel, New Jersey. KEYPORT SKATE JAM HELD AT HAZLET SKATE PARK

K

eyport Skate Jam held its fifth Skateboard Contest for beginners, intermediate, and advanced skateboarders at Hazlet Skate Park on September 20. Free t-shirts and Gatorade were given to all registrants before the three-hour event began. Central Jersey Skate Shop owner Al Battagliotti and two of his employees judged each of the 60 skaters who attended on use of the course, variety of technique, and technical ability. Prizes for first, second and third place in each age category were given. Tickets could be purchased for the chance to win a bike or a Longboard, which was purchased thanks to the combined donations from the Uptown Bar, Out of Control Smoke Shop, Truth of the Trade, McDonough’s Pub and Calibrese’s Barber Shop, all from Keyport, as well as Gem’s House of Bagels in Hazlet. There were multiple give-aways throughout the day. T-shirts donated by Feet First of Middletown were also given throughout the day. Refreshments were available; sweet treat coupons from Ralph’s Italian Ice

and discount coupons from Branded Skate Shop were also offered. Keyport Recreation member Christine Matarese, who organized the event, chose to move the Skate Jam from Keyport to Hazlet Recreation’s Skate Park to afford the more advanced skaters the opportunity to utilize a fullsized park to show their skills. It would also accommodate more people, as the event has grown over the years. “The kids have a lot of fun and are excited to return year after year to demonstrate what they have learned,” said Matarese. Originally the Skate Jam was being held in Keyport and plans for Keyport to build a skate park were ready to go when she was informed the entire project was cancelled. Rather than disappoint the children who enjoyed this sport, Matarese worked with Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative President Cliff Moore and the Hazlet Recreation to bring the event to the Hazlet Skate Park. “With Hazlet hosting Keyport in this event, together we can benefit the kids in these communities and keep them safe. We want to do

Mind. Body. Fitness. Reformer Pilates. PROVIDED BY JULIANNE DODS VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS

W

hether you are a seasoned athlete, casual exerciser or patient undergoing rehabilitation, each of us are working towards the same goal: to meet the physical demands of daily life. But, despite the varied techniques or training principles we use to accomplish individual fitness goals, many of us forget to incorporate one key element into our processes: mindful movement.

“The key to living a healthier lifestyle and achieving optimal wellness lies in finding a successful balance between physical exercise and inward focus,” says Kerri Miano, Meridian Fitness & Wellness’ Group Fitness Director in Hazlet. “In addition to traditional strength and cardiovascular training, Pilates can improve how your body functions from day to day.” A gentle yet challenging mind-body workout, Pilates is a total wellness approach to fitness that focuses on engaging the mind and strengthening the body through controlled, fluid movements. Safe and effective for everybody, Pilates may be the missing link in your current fitness regime. “In Pilates, the quality of the movement being performed takes precedence over

14

the quantity of repetitions completed,” says Miano. “By emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal alignment and mindful movement, you learn how to control your body’s movement.” One of the most common apparatuses used in Pilates is the Reformer which provides finely tuned resistance that allows you to work precisely and efficiently. “Reformer Pilates allows for the controlled, continuous use of several muscle groups simultaneously with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core,” says Miano. Invented by Pilates founder Joseph Pilates, the Universal Reformer facilitates hundreds of exercises for every part of the body using a bed like frame with a flat platform on it, called the carriage, which glides back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs which can increase or decrease the resistance as the carriage is pushed or pulled along the frame. Offering many of the same benefits as Mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates offers more variations to the classic exercises and a more functional approach to movement that benefits your daily life

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

activities, and generally provides more specialized attention. “While versatile, the Reformer is probably the most intimidating piece of Pilates equipment in any health and wellness center,” says Miano. “That is why the private Pilates Studio at Meridian Fitness & Wellness is the perfect retreat for those looking to strengthen both their bodies and their minds with Reformer Pilates.” Focusing on synchronizing breathing patterns with movement, Reformer Pilates is proven to maximize power and efficiency as well as reduce stress. Originally developed for use in Physical Therapy facilities to rehabilitate injuries, Pilates is a gentle, low impact exercise that is both physically and mentally demanding. If you are looking to develop a strong “powerhouse” core, build long, lean muscles, and create an evenly conditioned body, than Reformer Pilates is for you. T

he KeyportFest 5K run celebrated its eighth year on September 20, 2014, which was started in 2007 by the Keyport Recreation Commission (KRC). Nancy Jones of the KRC, ran the show for the second year in a row. A total of 233 people ran this year’s KeyportFest 5K, with perfect running weather! Jones said, “So many of our Keyport families participated in, and energized the runners as they cheered along the course. This made for a truly fun, festive atmosphere at the “Pearl of the Bayshore”. The major sponsors for the event were: IHOP of Keyport, Pine Belt Nissan, 32 West Salon, Bayada Home Health Care, Poor John’s Apollo Sewer and the Keyport Education Association. Also, there were many supporting organizations besides the Keyport Recreation Commission and the Keyport Spanish American Club that helped put on the race. Keyport Central School’s NEW APPROACH

Left to right: Anthony Rapolla, Keyport Central School Principal; Keyport Mayor Harry Aumack; Elena Malinconico, Board of Ed President; and Lisa Savoia, Superintendent for Keyport School District at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly redesigned library.

The Keyport School District is responding to parents’ concerns and has instituted numerous upgrades. Keyport Central students returning to school this fall were greeted with a brand new, bright red playground and interior/exterior video camera security system, as well as a redesigned library with a technology lab and renovated bathrooms. In related news, Google Classroom has been implemented; enhancements are being made to the district cable station; popular Community Day, typically held in the high school, will operate in conjunction with the Keyport Country Jamboree on October 11, 2014; and a Fall Playground Night was held on October 6, 2014 to introduce the new playground to the community. Some programs launched last year – including the Digital Media Club and Extendicare – continue to grow in leaps and bounds as the 2014-15 school year gets under way. “The Digital Media Club is a conduit for technology-interested students in 6th to 8th grades,” explains Lisa Savoia, superintendent at the Keyport Board of Education. Chris Gander, IT director for the Keyport School District, said, “The club started at the beginning of last year. Kids learn how to do sound mixing, video editing, operate digital video cameras and use a green-screen wall. This program reaches out to those kids that are not sporty, artsy or interested in music. It’s a different avenue, for technology. We had a steady group of 15 to 16 kids, and we expect it to grow. Anyone can join.” The district is also rolling out Google Classroom to teachers and students. “It’s an online classroom where teachers can invite students to join the class, and issue and grade homework. student starting in kindergarten has a free content-filtered Google e-mail account. This way there are no excuses: ‘I have no printer at home, no ink, no paper.’ Students can come in after lunch or after school. They can do the assignment online and send it directly to the teacher. The teacher can review and grade it without the student having to print it. It provides full access.” In addition, content will be improved on the cable TV station (channel 15 Cablevision; 35 FIOS). “We are looking at different service providers to find the most cost-effective way for us to increase use of content on the cable station,” says Savoia. “We have fielded many complaints that the station features the same old stuff. We want to keep parents more involved.” Finally, the Extendicare option, which was developed last year by kindergarten Masters-certified teachers Lynn Ferber and LeeAnn Romanetz, has filled a need expressed by parents for after-school supervision, and it generates revenue for the district. “Parents were not satisfied,” says Ferber. “They kept coming to me and asking if I knew of any after-school babysitting,” says Ferber. “Parents said if we modified the pre-K hours to end at 2:49 p.m. [with the rest of the school], they could also take advantage of it.” Extendicare began with 14 kids in September, and by June there were 38. Enrollment for this year started with 52. “There is no cap,” says Ferber. “With the additional children, we just opened another classroom. We now have three rooms split by age so it’s developmentally appropriate for socialization, completing homework and reading among peers.” Parents choose from two to five days a week. Options are morning (7:00 a.m. to 8:20 a.m.), afternoon (2:49 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) or both. Annual registration is $65 for first child, and the monthly fee ranges from $120 to $240 per month, depending on how many days of the week are required.

Hazlet Road Closing – UPDATE Middle Road Bridge Next to Police Headquarters Closed til January 2015 The current bridge was constructed in 1950 and it is no longer able to handle the traffic that uses Middle Road today. Several temporary repairs have been made over the last several years. Those repairs are no longer possible and the bridge must be replaced. During the closure, Middle Road will be restricted to local traffic only between Union Avenue and the bridge location, and also between Poole Avenue and the bridge location. No traffic will be able to cross the bridge during the construction process. Traffic that normally uses Middle Road to travel from the Union Avenue area to the Poole Avenue area will be detoured to State Highway 35 or State Highway 36 in order to get around the closure. Detour signs are already in place. The Police Department has had meetings with

Academy Bus Company and there will be slight alterations to commuter bus routes during the bridge reconstruction. Most of the current commuter bus stops will remain. Academy Bus Company will be advising their customers of any changes in bus stops. Local traffic on Middle Road will not be restricted. Access to township schools (Middle Road and Cove Road) will not be affected. Access to the Swim Club and the Soccer Complex will also not be affected. Access to the Police/Court Building and the Library must be done from the Poole Avenue side of Middle Road. Construction is scheduled to take 180 days, but is expected to be over by January 2015, if weather conditions permit. The Police Department will post any updates on their Facebook page and on the Township website.

Keyport’s Town Wide FOOD DRIVE On Saturday, October 25, 2014 – in honor of National Make A Difference Day, where thousands of people across the country will take part in a day of service in their communities - the Keyport First Aid Auxiliary will be sponsoring a town-wide food drive. The Auxiliary will be out collecting on October 25, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If they happen to miss your home, the drop off sites are the Keyport First Aid Building and 32 West Salon in Keyport. Residents will be receiving a flyer on their door, and they ask that you attach the flyer to your bag for pick-up. Suggested items for donation include: soup, peanut

butter, jelly, cereal, canned meat, canned fruit, pasta, sauce, tuna and canned veggies. Personal items such as shampoo, soap, deodorant and toothpaste are good. Food store gift cards are greatly appreciated and any cash or check donations will be turned into food store gift cards. The Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) is pleased to announce effective September 1, 2014, they transitioned from a Regional Chamber to a County Chamber under the new name, Monmouth County Chamber of Commerce. Over the upcoming months, the Chamber will launch a new brand identity including a new logo, slogan, website and a renewed focus as a valued resource for local businesses, organizations and fellow chambers. The decision to transition from a Regional Chamber to a County Chamber was based upon input from the Chamber’s Board of Directors and members to accommodate their expanding demographics and to position themselves to better support their civic and charitable endeavors throughout Monmouth County. The name change came after seeing success of their philanthropic efforts through their Beacon of Hope initiative. Beacon of Hope was formed in direct response to aide in relief of Hurricane Sandy. NMCC willingly and eagerly partnered with other organizations to assemble and operate a distribution center which was over 80,000 square feet located in Keyport. Beacon of Hope provided tangible resources to families, businesses, and organizations affected by Hurricane Sandy in Monmouth County and other regions of New Jersey. “At no point was anyone denied food, clothing or assistance, simply because they lived outside our footprint.” states MCCC President, Sebastian Ferrantell, Esq. “After many discussions with our Board of Directors, we found that our philanthropic endeavors through the Beacon of Hope, have opened doors of opportunity for the Chamber to expand its demographic impact.”

Tricky Tray Benefit for Local with Cancer

On August 30, 2014, the Keyport-Matawan Elks, the Keyport-Matawan Elks Motorcycle Club, and the Keyport First Aid held a benefit to help support one of their members, Kathy Thomson, who has cancer. It was a huge success with everyone’s help. The MC president Eddie Rehm with his wife Donna, along with Rich Lacomte and his wife Fran, put this event together which included live music, a large buffet, and a 178 basket tricky tray. Donations came from all over the community, between gift cards, sports memorabilia, bikes, and toys - it was a sight to see. “To see the support from everyone that came, and to see the smile on Kathy’s face when she saw the amount of people that came out for her, is what the Elks do best,” said Exalted Ruler Stephen Szczepaniak. “When we heard one of our members had cancer, Eddie, Donna, Richie, and Fran, came up with a plan to help out. The day of the event

we all pulled together and with help from the Keyport First Aid squad and their cadets, the event was very successful. We would like to thank everyone who helped out setting up, cleaning, serving, and all those who came to support us with the event. Without all of you, it would not have been possible” A special thank you also goes out to the Matawan, Aberdeen, Union Beach, and Keyport Police Departments, for blocking the way for the guest of honor to come to the event. She was escorted by the Keyport-Matawan Elks MC, as well as other Elks MC’s that came to support her. The progression was led by her husband and son, John Thomson Sr. and Jr. At the end, Kathy wanted to say thank you for everyone who came out. She said the love that was shown for her was amazing and could not be thankful enough for all the effort that was put into the whole event.

The Keyport-Matawan Elks next event will be a breakfast, which will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2014 from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. Admission is $7.00, $6 for students and seniors and kids under 10 are free.

EARLY DETECTION: The Best Defense against Breast cancer PROVIDED BY MERIDIAN HEALTH

The thought of having breast cancer is frightening to everyone. However, ignoring the possibility that you may develop breast cancer can be dangerous. As women, as well as breast experts, Sunita Nankoo M.D., and Catherine Campo, D.O., of the Women’s Center at Bayshore Community Hospital have a wealth of experience to share on the topic of breast health as we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent breast cancer, but early detection provides the greatest possibility of successful treatment. The simplest method of early detection for women ages 20 to 40 is breast selfexamination. The purpose of a regular self-examination is to familiarize yourself with your breasts so you will more readily detect any change. When performing selfexamination, it’s important to look out for any sign of development of a lump, swelling of the breast or skin irritation. After the age of 40, the risk of breast cancer increases and requires a more thorough method of checking for abnormalities. Mammography is a low-dose X-ray of the breasts to find changes or irregularities in the breast tissue. “Digital mammography is considered the standard for

NEW!

mammograms today,” says Dr. Nankoo. Bayshore utilizes a new form of mammogram called tomosynthesis, but commonly referred to as “3D mammography.” The latest in breast cancer screening, 3D mammography produces three-dimensional images of each individual layer of the breast, making abnormal tissue more visible, and highlighting suspicious masses. “This all-inclusive view dramatically enhances our ability to detect and diagnose small cancers,” says Dr. Campo. 3D mammography also rules out irregularities that would have raised concern in 2D mammograms, reducing the need to call women back for additional imaging. The imaging capability of this technology is particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue. According to Dr. Nankoo, “Now, women who visit the Women’s Center at Bayshore Community Hospital can have peace of mind knowing their mammography was as comprehensive as possible.” The Women’s Center at Bayshore is a place where women have access to the best health care in a spa-like setting, close to home. Designed by women for women, the Center offers exceptional quality care in an environment of caring. To learn more about the Women’s Center at Bayshore, visit bayshorehospital.org.

membership cards to barter at retailers and restaurants. BarterPays! takes care of printing and distribution of new members’ advertising at no cost. Frequently, the staff calls and emails existing members to let them know there is someone new in the BarterPays! family. When you are a member, you have a powerful team, marketing and promoting the company. As a member generates barter dollars, they begin to offset current cash expenses, spending BarterPays! dollars instead. Often, new members use their new revenue stream for immediate, ongoing purchases, such as advertising, daycare, or water delivery. Others save to pay for a wedding or their child’s orthodontia, and some spend on the pleasures of life, including massage, fine jewelry, pizza, limousines, and sushi. BarterPays! dollars can be exchanged for other forms of barter currency upon request. We offer a 90-day money-back guarantee, if not delighted.

THE #1 REASON A BUSINESS ought to participate in a barter network is because they want more customers. If a company has capacity to accept additional business, whether it’s an attorney with open billable hours in their day, a hotel with unsold room nights, or open tables at a restaurant, gaining additional market share is the primary purpose and advantage to buy and sell in a barter exchange. If you’ve bartered on your own, you’ll find that belonging to a barter network gives you the chance to make additional exchanges more easily, and allows for more equitable trades, since you get to barter with lots of members in the Network, not just one-on-one. Being active in a barter network gives you a competitive edge. Members patronize participating businesses, because they save cash when they hire someone in their club. They pay for products and services with barter dollars, and spend their U.S. dollars for Happiness mortgage and taxes. Guaranteed! When a member joins the barter network, they receive a manual filled 732-364-4614 with barter info, membarterpays.com bers-only online access, invitations to exclusive, USE CODE #CM32014 for complimentary business FREE monthly service fees networking events, and for three months!

HAZLE T GOVERNMENT HAPPENINGS Submitted by Hazlet Mayor James DiNardo Hazlet is a Happening place this year and we’d like to highlight a few things to keep you updated: By a vote of 3 to 2 we passed a road improvements program to begin shortly, in the amount of $1.8 million. Plus more for next year, and all from current savings in our budget. We were able to keep the Municipal (Hazlet) tax rate the same for two years, no increase. If you compare last year’s bill to this years, you will see that your Hazlet rate has not gone up at all. Your sewer bill was reduced by $5.00/quarter We saved the township $412,000 by re-negotiating employee medical coverage We have applied for a Green Acres Grant for multiple park improvements and equipment for $740,000.00 We have instituted a P.P.I. committee (Program for Public Information) which will help us in working towards credit for flood insurance, in addition to the following: The C.R.S. (Community Rating System) The Township is an active in participant of National Flood Insurance Programs (NFIP). We have been recognized for our voluntary incentive program of implementing flood plan management practices that exceed Federal minimum requirements to provide protection from flooding. Our continuing proactive efforts has resulted in insurance premiums in our community and we now hold a 20% premium reduction for residents in a flood zone, and 10% in non-flood zone. Our expert in this department is Annie Eng, who because of her knowledge, was hired by FEMA during the aftermat of Sandy. We have instituted a 5 year tax abatement for homenowners and businesses for their building improvements. Our Department of Public Works has been redesigned to include a Sewer department and a Buildings & Grounds department, thus assuring more efficient services to our tax payers. Joint board effectiveness is still looking for efficiency

How can we ever forget, All those memories at the Jersey Shore Where it was always love at first sight The sunny beaches, salty air and so much, more You can have Waikiki and the French Riviera Even the islands and the beaches in Spain too But the Jersey Shore is all of them put together With golden beaches along an ocean of blue When Sandy arrived at the Jersey Shore She brought death and destruction in her wake With angry winds no one had ever seen before We took the best shot that Sandy could make As we strive to replace what is gone Our prayers will help guide us back again And as the spirt of the Jersey Shore lives on, We still dream of summers that never end So if you have memories of times gone bye, The beaches, boardwalks and summer romances They’re in the expressions of sea, shore and sky In the summertime at the Jersey Shore And who could ask for anything more? And as the spirt of past summers lives on, All our dreams will be better than before We’ll have childhood memories to build upon, With brighter tomorrows just over the horizon In the summertime at the Jersey Shore And who could ask for anything more? In the summertime – In the summertime In the summertime at the Jersey Shore

St. Benedict School Honors

International day of Peace in a BIG Way!

O

n September 19, 2014, the entire St. Benedict School in Holmdel, grades K-8, assembled outside their school for a special prayer service and song in honor of the International Day of Peace on September 21st. Led by Ms. Lilly, school principal, and orchestrated by Mrs. Mertz, the art teacher, the entire school gathered around a giant peace sign outlined in 475 pinwheels, each one made by a student in the school. All of the school recited the peace prayer of St. Francis and the ceremony concluded with a peace song, “I’ve Got Peace Like A River,” a touching close to a beautiful ceremony to send a message of peace and harmony in one little corner of the world to another. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two Art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first year, groups in over 1,325 locations throughout the world were spinning pinwheels on September 21st - there were approximately 500,000 pinwheels spinning throughout the world. Last year (year 9), 2013, over 4.5 million pinwheels were spinning in over 3,500

locations, including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South America. This project is non-political – peace doesn’t necessarily have to be associated with the conflict of war, it can be related to violence/intolerance in our daily lives, to peace of mind. To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning, but, in the end, it all comes down to a simple definition: “a state of calm and serenity, with no anxiety, the absence of violence, freedom from conflict or disagreement among people or groups of people.”
