A Season for Gratitude

A

ndy Williams sang about how it’s the most wonderful time of the year – and I couldn’t agree with him more. The holiday season is just around the corner with Thanksgiving kicking it off on November 27! To be honest with you, I started listening to Christmas music in October. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I get excited, and it’s definitely not for the gifts. As most of you will agree, presents for us adults are a thing of the past, but it’s more about the gatherings with family and friends that I look forward to. Sure, when you get a bunch of people in the same room who share similar DNA, things can get a little touchy, but the one thing we need to remember is that in the end, all we have is each other.

Hazlet First Aid Rescue Squad Present Sixth Annual Gift Auction

H

azlet First Aid and Rescue Squad held their sixth annual Gift Auction on October 17 at the North Centerville Firehouse. The nominal ticket price included coffee, tea, and dessert, and over 200 people attended. Gift donations were made by local and corporate businesses and included such items as a 32’ HD TV, a Coach purse, blender, slow cooker, jewelry, holiday items, waffle maker, a Lenox vase, dishes, and a deck table with four chairs. These gifts and many more filled several tables in the room. Executive Trustee and Event Chair Beth Alpaugh said, “Each year this is a little different. My goal every year is to raise more money than the year before. We are a volunteer organization and rely 100% on donations and fundraisers such as this so we can continue to provide volunteer EMS service to Hazlet and surrounding towns.” Alpaugh became an EMT shortly after 9/11. “I just needed to do something more,” she said. Helping her own community and being prepared to aid others

in a crisis felt like the right thing to do. According to its website, Hazlet First Aid and Rescue squad respond to approximately 1,700 calls per year. In order to face this demand, members receive the best training in first aid and rescue techniques available. Currently, the squad is desperately seeking new members to meet the demands of increasing call volumes. Anyone interested or needing further information about the squad can visit www.hazletfirstaid. org. Presently, there is no cost for the voluntary services provided by the squad. Equipment costs, training, and building and vehicle maintenance is very expensive and the squad appreciates all donations made by Hazlet Township residents. Please remember that the members of the Hazlet First Aid and Rescue Squad are made up your friends, neighbors, and fellow residents. As the website states - they volunteer day and night because your life depends on it. Be proud of your first aid squad as they are very proud to serve you!

Annual Cornhole Tournament

H

azlet PBA Honorguard held their sixth annual Oktoberfest Cornhole Tournament on October 18 at the Leocadia Recreation Area. Lt. Ted Wittke, Jr., Detective Division Commander of the Hazlet Police Department, coordinated the event. For many years a horseshoe tournament was held but once it started to decrease in popularity, Lt. Wittke came up

with the idea for the cornhole tournament. “That was five years ago and we seemed to bring in a younger crowd with this type of tournament. We were the first to have such a tournament in this area and since then, many PBA’s and other non-profits have hosted their own tournaments.” There are many return players each year as well as new ones. “We have had the tournament at Leocadia Recreation Area for four of the five years and it has always

been a great location,” said Lt. Wittke. Fifty teams consisting of two players each team participated in the double elimination tournament, meaning if you lose, your team is moved to the losers’ side of the bracket and you still have a change to make it to the finals and win, explained Lt. Wittke. Ticket price for the event included beer, lunch, t-shirt, and mug. Photo plaques were given to the first, second and third place

winners. Luke and Mark McFadden were winners for the second year in a row. Scott Emery won the 50/50 raffle and donated a portion back to the PBA Honorguard. Lunch was provided by Richie Legotte of Hog Heaven who conducted all the cooking and donated his services for the PBA Honorguard Cornhole Tournament. “Top Shelf Tailgate was back with us and his big screen TV showed college football games; as well as providing music for

entertainment.” Lt. Wittke explained that proceeds from the tournament will help offset the cost and maintenance of the Honorguard’s uniforms. “In the past we have attended many in-the-line-of-duty police funerals throughout the state. We have represented the police department in Memorial Day, 9-11, and Hazlet Day ceremonies.” Patrolman Michael Duncan, who is the Honorguard Commander, is a

prior Air Force Veteran and is the Hazlet Police Department’s Supervising Firearms Officer. Commander Duncan shared some background on the Hazlet PBA Honorguard, noting that its founding father was Captain Nobile; and that being a member is voluntary; and currently there are 14 members. “This was another successful year with great weather. The turnout was our best yet,” said Lt. Ted Wittke.

5th Annual Matawan Day

STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN

Locals Enjoy an Array of Vendors & Entertainment at the Yearly Event

Originally slated for October 11, Matawan Day had to be postponed due to rain. The rain date was for the very next day, which made for a better day to celebrate the town of Matawan. Organized by Mike Moyers of Moyers Insurance for the fifth year in a row, the event had over 95 vendors. The vendors were an array of small business categories and attendees were able to buy delicious food, see pets for adoption, view amazing art by students of Matawan Regional High School, and ride down blow up slides for the children!

The day had its fair share of entertainment as well. There were shows featuring local bands, DJs and dance studios. The dances included a flash mob in the middle of the fair by the Arts & Motion Academy and a tribute to the late pop singer Michael Jackson by the MJXpressions dance team. Those shows kept people, families and even pets coming back for more. Moyers was very happy with another successful Matawan Day. “At least we had a rain date,” said Moyers. “It’s a great community event and we had an amazing day.”

Keyport’s 17th Annual Screamin’ Country Jamboree STORY ADILAH KHAN

A

fter months of planning and anticipation, Keyport held its 17th annual Screamin’ Country Jamboree on October 11 and 12, and despite some rain, it didn’t seem to keep the crowds away.

Children were entertained by rides and games while people of all ages watched lively musical performances. Keyport businesses lined the streets, ranging from home décor to healthy lifestyles.

The event was sponsored by the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative (KBBC), which was established to bring Keyport businesses together for the good of the Borough and its residents through economic revitalization. Charlie Merla, Vice President of KBBC said, “The purpose of it is to get people into the stores in Keyport, along Front Street and the whole festival, in order to promote business in Keyport. That’s our goal, to help them promote themselves as a destination.” The annual Chili Tasting Competition crowned Burlew’s Seafood and Steaks the winner. The contest brought crowds in to taste chili from Charlie Merla, Vice President of KBBC. seven local businesses. Burlew’s Seafood & Steak, Jersey Shore Subs & Soups, Uptown Bar & Grill, Gina’s Brick Oven & Ristorante, McDonagh’s Pub, 28 East Enoteca, and Yellow Rose Diner all threw their hats in the ring to be crowned the best of the best. Lenny Logotte, owner of vendor Hog Heaven said, “Just by seeing people’s reaction, we bring a certain kind of food that’s different, more of a southern smoked barbecue, you never see a trailer like this anywhere in New Jersey or New York that’s doing vendor events like this. Most of them do competitions-we actually give out to the community.” Keyport IHOP donated free pumpkin pancakes for the Pumpkin Pancake Eating Contest. Participants had to completely clean a plate of 25 stacked pancakes. Winners include: two-time champion James Jackson of Keyport, Adam of Morganville, Toni of Howell, and Chris of Keyport. And of course, the screaming contest brought guests on stage to determine who could scream the loudest, letting the festival truly live up to its name. Jamboree attendee Irene Caffrey said, “I’m really impressed with the turnout and the amount of vendors and I think it is a great opportunity for the local businesses to showcase what they have to offer.” The KBBC is the managing entity of the Keyport Business Improvement District, created by ordinance of the Borough of Keyport. It is run by an elected Board of Directors, comprised of business operators, property owners, representatives of the Borough of Keyport including Mayor and Council members, Borough committee representative, and resident representative. The goal of the KBBC is not only to increase economic development in Keyport, but also bring tourism to the Pearl of the Bayshore. You can download the Keyport Community Hub app on iPhone and Android for more news about amazing events in Keyport.

Got 12 Weeks? It’s Time To Transform

R

esearch shows it takes approximately 12 weeks on average to change lifestyle habits that will move you toward optimal health and wellness. When asked the question, “What is more important than your health and well-being”, most people will reply with a resounding; “Not much.” However, a strong desire to be fit and feeling well is oftentimes not enough for achieving success. It also requires a strong level of commitment. In addition, most people need a goal plan that is straightforward, practical, and doable. They want clarifying explanations and conveniently accessible resources that will help them stay on track. Most of all, they seek a motivating and knowledgeable accountability partner for their transformation process.

n September 27, 2014, the town of Hazlet embraced the gorgeous day to celebrate their great town at Veteran’s Memorial National Park. Organized by Mike Christopher, who has been a part of the event since 1998, and volunteer director Chris McManus, Hazlet Day was a success with close to 100 vendors promoting their business. Hazlet Day had something for everyone, especially the kids, who enjoyed rides, a bounce house, a rock wall and an obstacle course. Live shows kept the crowd entertained every half hour until the end. Shows included local acts which included - bands, fabulous dance teams and an unbelievable martial arts expedition. The police and fire departments of Hazlet participated as well, letting children explore the trucks, cars and gave them tips on how they could keep themselves and families safe in a crises.

Admission was free, so anybody could come and be a part of this amazing event. “It is an annual event that we try and put out for the residents to enjoy a beautiful fall day,” said Christopher.

Heart Healthy HOLIDAY TIPS

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us and we all know what that means; five weeks of family, festivities and FOOD! But, while holiday traditions can make it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle, they don’t have to throw your progress completely off track.

BY JULIANNE DODS, VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS

“S

ocial and family obligations during the holidays place a great deal of emphasis on ‘feasting’ which means serious temptations to the novice or even expert health enthusiast,” says Kerri Miano Group Fitness Instructor at Meridian Fitness & Wellness in Hazlet. “That’s why our team of health and wellness experts put together these quick tips to guiltlessly enjoy the holiday season.” Plan, schedule and follow through. From office parties to family gatherings, the holidays are action packed. “Draft a schedule that accommodates holiday commitments while also allowing you to complete normal activities such as meal planning and exercise,” says Erin Walsh, Meridian Fitness & Wellness Personal Training Director. While you may not have an hour a day to devote to a workout session, some exercise is better than none as our bodies respond to the challenge of exercise, not the amount of time we spend doing it. “High Intensity Interval Training is a great way to optimize your workouts during the holidays,” says Walsh. “Completed in only 20-30 minutes a day, HIIT utilizes repeated bouts of short duration, high intensity exercise intervals quickly followed by longer duration, lower intensity rounds of active recovery to maximize caloric expenditure.” The physiological benefits for this type of training include increased Resting Metabolic Rate, which means you burn more calories even when you aren’t working out; perfect for the holiday season!

Nutritious and Delicious. Rest assured most holiday gatherings you attend this season will be centered on one thing: food. “Spacing meals throughout the day and planning low calorie snacks will help to curtail junk food temptations and the desire to overindulge during the holiday season,” says Miano. If you are attending a party, be sure to grab a quick, nutritious snack on the way or bring one with you to share. If you are throwing the party, prepare hearty and healthy foods full of locally grown produce and lean meats that are chock full of protein, fiber, Vitamin C and beta carotene. But, food is not the only culprit to calorie overload. While current dietary guidelines recommend a maximum of one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, alcohol tends to comprise plenty of empty calories consumed throughout the holiday season. “Be careful with your beverages,” says Miano. “The average glass of wine or beer has between 100-150 calories each.” While that may not seem like much, alcohol decreases inhibitions which induce over-eating and over-drinking. A tricky combination when you are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So, while you may be busy and, sure, it’s cold outside, Meridian Fitness & Wellness challenges you to make your health a priority this holiday season. Acknowledge that your normal fitness routine and eating habits will be affected. Make a plan and follow through. From our family to yours, we wish you a happy, healthy holiday season! Letter to the Editor

BEFORE

AFTER

Hello, my name is Casandra Auletta, and I participated in the Wigs for Kids program this summer. “RING” the bell to Shear Class Salon in Hazlet chimes, announcing the arrival of a new customer. I walk in, very aware of what I’m about to do. “It’s okay” I tell myself, “deep breaths.” I sit on the luxury couch waiting for my turn to get a haircut. Normally, a haircut isn’t a big deal for me, but this time is different. This time, I’m getting most of my hair cut off. This time, I’m donating twelve inches of my hair to Wigs for Kids. I have wanted to donate my hair for so long now, because I know that other people need it more than me. Now I finally can! My hair has gotten long enough, to the point where I don’t need all of it. On the Wigs for Kids website, it said, “I could endure the pain of my disease, but not the pain of losing my hair.” So I figured that I would help some people out with that. I am a regular volunteer, so I’m used to doing things for people who are in need. I’ve never done something like this before, so I figured it would be cool. I was nervous and excited for the day when I finally cut my hair. First, before the salon did anything else, they had to wash my hair. At least that was really nice. Then,

I was put in the stylist’s chair, and with my wet locks in a pony, my stylist, Beth, went snip, snip, snip, snip. It all came off, twelve inches that I’m fortunate to be able to grow, just came right off. I was so happy that I did it though. It felt nice to help someone who lost their hair to a disease like cancer, or leukemia, or even the chemo that the patients have to go through. I felt elated to know I was helping a little child who needed my hair. I was really over-the-moon-happy, to know that I had accomplished something. After Beth finished styling my new short hair, I was even happier. It looks so healthy, and manageable! Everyone there was so nice about it, they complimented how it looked, congratulated me for donating my hair, and so much more. However, what I was really happy about was the fact that it was being used for a good cause. My hair can grow back, but not someone who lost it to health problem, burns or anything else. In the end, I felt really good to have done it, and even better that it turned out all right, for everyone.

Union Beach Family to Hold 4th Annual Decorations for Donations Program The Gress house, located at 14 Johnson Avenue in Union Beach (off of Broadway), has decided to once again, celebrate the true meaning of Christmas this year with their fourth annual “Decorations for Donations” Program. They want you to stop by, enjoy the dazzling lights and sounds of the holiday season, and consider making a charitable donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Cash donations and/ or checks made payable to the Children’s Miracle Network will be greatly appreciated - no amount is too small! Donations can be dropped off in the Santa train donation box, alongside the family mailbox, from mid-November until December 31.

One hundred percent of the donations raised will benefit local children throughout New Jersey who suffer from common childhood afflictions, such as asthma to broken bones, to those who fight larger challenges, such as birth defects and cancer. Through the years, thanks to the generosity of those who support the display, the Gress family has raised several thousand dollars for this wonderful cause! Come out and see this spectacle of lights, and make this year the best year yet, along with “brightening” the lives of children this holiday season.

Stuffing . . .

Heat 1 oz oil in large sauce pan, big enough to fit all chops in. Add onions, garlic, pepper, and celery. Season with salt and pepper. Saute 2-3 min. until soft. Add Craisins, Raisins, Apricots, diced apples and 1/8 t. cinnamon. Cook until apples become soft, remove from heat and add 1 oz. Apple Jack Brandy. Place back on heat, reduce till almost dry. Add cubed bread and 1 teaspoon Thyme, stir to combine everything. Stuffing will be a little dry. Remove stuffing from pan into a bowl. To stuff pork chop, make a slit in the middle of the side of the chop 1 inch wide. Insert small knife and cut inside the chop to ¼ inch from the ends, to form a pocket. Place even amounts of stuffing inside each chop.

Chops . . .

Heat rest of oil to medium temp in the pan. In separate bowl mix flour with salt, pepper, and ½ t. cumin. Dredge each chop in flour mix, shaking off all excess flour. Place chops in pan making sure not to stick to pan. When chops are brown turn over, again making sure they do not stick to pan. Add sliced onion, stir to coat with oil and cook 2 minutes. Add apple slices, salt, pepper, rest of cinnamon and cumin and stir so everything is even in pan. Cook until apples become soft. Remove pan from heat and add 1 oz. Apple Jack Brandy. Stir, let reduce half way, add beef stock and bring to boil. Reduce heat to simmer. Cook 7 minutes, turn chops over and cook another 7 min. Remove chops from pan, stir sauce, adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Spoon sauce over chops.

aranatha Baptist Church in Hazlet held an afternoon filled with all kinds of fun activities at their annual Family Fall Fest. It was one of the few opportunities that exist for children (and adults!) to enjoy games, pony rides, prizes, and food – which was all for free. From beginning to end, there was not one activity that requires a fee, and even donations were not accepted. “A gift should be a gift, with no strings attached,” explains Pastor Barry Mulligan, “and this is something that we can do to meet a need in our community. We wanted to provide families with a chance to relax and enjoy spending time together without the financial pressure that often limits these opportunities.” By the end of the day, the Family Fall Fest welcomed over 300 guests and would like to thank everyone who expressed their support and encouragement!

Taylor Grillo Awarded 2014 EAGLE SCOUT SCHOLARSHIP Taylor Grillo, the 2014 recipient of the Stephen J. Fiorelli Eagle Scout Scholarship Award, was honored on October 8, 2014 at Boy Scout Troop 66’s Fall Court of Honor. The Fiorelli Eagle Scout Scholarship was created by Theresa Fiorelli and Boy Scout Troop 66 to honor the memory of her husband Stephen J. Fiorelli, Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 66 in Matawan who died in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. An avid outdoorsman who loved to camp with the troop, he was a role model who lived the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life. An engineer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, he would take time on camping trips to talk to the Scouts about engineering as a profession. The Eagle Scout Scholarship Award recipient must be a current or former member of Troop 66, a graduating or recently graduated high school senior, have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and be enrolled full-time in a college, university or other school. The recipient is chosen based on his character, service to his community, and service to Scouting. One Eagle Scout is chosen each year to win this Scholarship. Taylor, a 2014 graduate of Matawan Regional High School became an Eagle Scout in August of this year and was surprised to be chosen at the Court of Honor to receive the Award. “It means a lot to me to receive this award. The Scholarship has been around for years, and I am proud to carry on the Fiorelli legacy in the Troop. I am honored to accept this award and would like to thank the Fiorelli family and Troop 66 for choosing me.” Taylor is attending Brookdale Community College studying Criminal Justice. He recently became an Assistant Scoutmaster with the Troop. Troop 66 was founded in 1957 in Matawan and provides an active year round outdoor program for boys in 5th grade and above. Troop 66 meets weekly on Wednesday evenings during the School year from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Matawan United Methodist Church. The Church is located on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Church Street in Aberdeen. Boy Scout Troop 66 helped the Matawan United Methodist Church Food Pantry in October, for their annual Yom Kippur Food drive. The Food Pantry receives donations each year on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, and the holiest day of the year. Temple Beth Ahm traditionally asks their congregants to donate bags of nonperishables and dry goods to be passed out to residents who are in need. Approximately 8 to 10 boy scouts, plus Assistant Scoutmaster Ken Kinneman and volunteer parents spent two hours unloading vans and organizing 166 bags of canned and boxed goods. Over 1,000 pounds of donated goods were unpacked and inventoried – cereal, soups, pastas, beans, vegetables and fruits. The Food Pantry is open every Thursday morning from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evening of every month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. You do not need to be a resident of Aberdeen or Matawan, the Food Pantry is open to anyone in need. They are located at the Matawan United Methodist Church at 478 Atlantic Avenue in Aberdeen, on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Church Street. Troop 66 was founded in 1957 in Matawan, and provides an active year round outdoor program for boys in 5th grade and above. SHARE THE JOY OF THE SEASON

and Create Happy Holiday for Less Fortunate Children

The Ashley Lauren Foundation’s 4th Annual Butterfly Ball and 10th Anniversary Celebration Honoring Anita DelPesce & Robert Montesano On Saturday, February 7, 2015 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch, guests will gather to honor Anita DelPesce and Bob Montesano at The Ashley Lauren Foundation’s 4th Annual “Butterfly Ball.” The event provides an opportunity for attendees to enjoy an evening of fine food, drink and entertainment while raising funds and increasing awareness of The Ashley Lauren Foundation’s mission of providing Hope & Help for Children with Cancer in NJ. Guests will enjoy a truly “Festive” Carnival Atmosphere during the cocktail hour. In addition to an evening of dinner and dancing - with music by Mack & Soul, guests will be able to bid on many unique auction items graciously donated by supporters of The Ashley Lauren Foundation. Founder and CEO, Monica Vermeulen states, “This is an evening not to be missed. We have many exciting things planned for the Ball. Victoria Ali, Butterfly Ball Chairperson, and her dedicated committee are working hard at making this a very memorable evening.” Funds raised by the Butterfly Ball will support the programs of The Ashley Lauren Foundation including Direct Family Assistance, (household bills, bills and medications not paid through medical insurance, traveling expenses to and from hospitals, funeral expenses, etc.); Material Assistance (food, clothing, household items); Emotional Support; Support groups; Parties for the Children; Advocacy; Outings; Birthday and Holiday Gifts for the Children; “Making Dreams Come True” Program and anything else that is needed to make their lives easier and to let each child know that they are important. The Ashley Lauren Foundation does not fund research but rather are “in the trenches” with these families as they cope with the daily battle of pediatric cancer.” The Ashley Lauren Foundation will also be celebrating the kick-off of a monumental milestone. Please join us at the Butterfly Ball as we celebrate 10 years of providing Hope & Help to NJ Children with Cancer.

Each holiday season Lunch Break, Monmouth County’s first soup kitchen and pantry, and so much more, experiences a transformation and becomes Santa’s Workshop by undertaking a huge holiday operation to provide gifts for hundreds of the neediest children from both Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Through their Adopt-A-Family program, new and age-appropriate gifts are distributed to kids—from newborn to 15 years of age. All of this is possible because of the generosity and kindness of Lunch Break’s good friends and neighbors who, in 2013, brought smiles to the faces of over 1,500 children, and the hope this year is that the wishes of even more children can be fulfilled. Beginning now, you can visit Lunch Break to select your family to adopt. Sponsors will find each child’s wish list of three gifts or, especially in the case of the older children, gift cards for a variety of retailers, movie theaters, and restaurants. Sponsors can shop for the gifts and bring them unwrapped to Lunch Break to be given to the family or provide Lunch Break elves with the funds to purchase the gifts on your behalf. And, to be sure, you don’t have to adopt a whole family. Lunch Break gladly accepts donated gifts or gift cards (pre-teens and teens love those gift cards), not attached to any particular child or family; these gifts will be used to fill or complete holiday bags for the children. If you are shopping for your adopted family(s), the unwrapped gifts must be returned to Lunch Break by Friday, December 5, 2014, at their Tinton Falls warehouse. (Turn down the access road just off Shrewsbury Avenue, next to the Armed Services recruiting center, behind the WOW gym, and continue to the end of that road.) Drop off times are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Saturday, December 13, the parents and guardians will gather at Tower Hill Church and those happy Lunch Break elves will distribute the gifts donated by all the kind and generous Secret Santas who have participated in this year’s efforts to make happy holiday memories for the children of Lunch Break. The holiday season seems a long way off, but it will be here sooner than you think. Lunch Break is asking their friends and supporters to share the joy of the season again this year through their Adopt-A-Family program, or by donating gifts and/or gift cards. If you want to participate or have any questions, please contact Sharda Jetwani, Program Director, at 732.784.7360 or online at sjetwani@lunchbreak.org. To learn more about Lunch Break, their extensive programs, activities and events, please go to www.lunchbreak.org. They can be followed on Facebook and reached at 732.747.8577 or info@lunchbreak.org.
