Brandon Gress and his mom, Lori, at their 2014 display.
Some of your children’s favorite characters will be back for the 2015 Holiday Season.
nce upon a Christmastime, there was a magical place, not very far, where you could see Christmas lights - maybe even a star! A magnificent house with dazzling lights that sparkle and twinkle all through the nights. A fairytale for all, a time you will recall, with memories to share through the year! So, get ready for those nights, when the Gress House is bright, raising money for charity again this year! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls - the Gress Family of Union Beach, once again invites you to celebrate the magic, wonder and excitement of the holiday season with their 6th annual Holiday Light Spectacular benefitting the Children’s Miracle Network of Mountainside, New Jersey. Join everyone from around the Bayshore at 14 Johnson Avenue (off of Broadway) in Union Beach every night from mid-November through early January from dusk to 12:00 midnight, as they celebrate the season in style, including thousands of festive lights, holiday figures, dazzling special effects, music, and complimentary candy canes! Once again, The Gress’ will be raising money for the Mountainside chapter of the Children’s Miracle Network through their “Decorations for Donations” program. Cash donations and/or checks made payable to the Children’s Miracle
Network are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off in the Santa train donation box alongside the family mailbox. Last year, through the generous donations given, they raised a little over $4,000! It is their hope, this year, to raise the same, if not more for this wonderful cause. Also, back by popular demand, the Gress House will partner with My Fairytale Dream character entertainment company to bring some of your favorite characters to visit select nights in December for The Gress’ Very Merry Christmas Block Parties. Check out, and be sure to “Like” “The Gress House Holiday Light Spectacular” on Facebook for character show times and appearances through the winter months. You’ll also find festive pictures, updates, and other holiday happenings on their page. Additionally, just as a reminder, during nights of inclement or wet weather conditions, the display may not be lit. Furthermore, the display is meant to be seen up close, so feel free to take as many pictures as you would like and walk around their yard. However, for the courtesy of their neighbors, please do not park in front of their driveways or walk on their properties. The Gress Family look forward to seeing everyone and wish you the “brightest” holiday greetings from their overly decorated home to yours!

O
ctober was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and was dedicated to increasing awareness of the disease and raising funds for research into its causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Immediate Care, a medical walk-in clinic, organized Pink Out the Plaza, an awareness and fundraising event on October 10, 2015 in Hazlet’s Airport Plaza. “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the positive energy, and we are so grateful for all those that joined us in making it happen,” said Cassondra Hadel, Immediate Care’s Director of Marketing. Immediate Care partnered with the American Cancer Society (ACS), the event was held to educate the community about the causes and prevention of the disease. Immediate Care provided literature on early detection, breast cancer support groups & free mammograms for uninsured women at CentraState. A guest speaker, a breast cancer survivor, was present on behalf of the ACS, sharing the impact of the disease and taking time to provide education of the causes and ways to detect and prevent breast cancer live on 94.3 THE Point. The event also drew crowds of survivors, people undergoing treatment, and family members who just wanted to

be present at the event to speak with everyone else about their experience. “We really hoped that this fundraiser helped save lives and educated the community about breast cancer,” said Dr. Golding Granado, Medical Director of Immediate Care. The businesses of the plaza showed support by selling the ubiquitous pink ribbons and pinked-out products, donating a portion of proceeds to the ACS. These included pink bubble teas from Kazia’s Asian Grab ‘n Go, pink yarn from Moore Yarn, pink bagels from Brooklyn Bagels, pink vests and bowties from Forum Tuxedos, and pink hair accessories and streaks by Plaza Unisex Hair Salon. United Check Cashing was also kind enough to paint pink ribbons onto storefront windows. Oriana Lamarca Cannizzaro of Oriana Lamarca Designs also added sparkle to the event by selling custom pink stone bracelets and 20% of the proceeds was donated back to American Cancer Society. “This was an amazing event, which is supporting a good cause and it’s important to me to give back to the community that is helping locals in our neighboring towns,” added Salvatore Cannizzaro, CEO of Immediate Care. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in October of 1985,
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
when the ACS partnered with the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca, producer of several anti-breast cancer drugs). The aim of Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been to advocate mammography as the most effective tool in the fight against the disease. The first known use of a pink ribbon in connection with breast cancer awareness was in fall of 1991, when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. Breast Cancer Awareness Month has since gone international. A variety of events are organized worldwide during the month of October, including fundraising walks and runs and the pink illumination of landmark buildings. While wearing pink may be one way to support those in treatment, celebrate survivors and remember individuals who’ve died from the disease, there’s much more that can be done to empower the women and men touched by breast cancer. Although raising awareness about identifying the disease is crucial, funding research, encouraging healthy lifestyles and helping patients understand their options is key. Remember, October isn’t about breasts, it’s about the people they belong to.

NESTLED IN THE HEART OF MATAWAN is the 140-plus-year-old clubhouse of the Women’s Club of Matawan. The Club celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 4, 2015 at the clubhouse with over 60 people in attendance. Antique clothing from 1830 up to 1950 belonging to Regina Hawn was on display. The guest speaker was Matawan Town Historian Al Savolaine, a retired teacher and Head Master of the Middle School at the Ranney School, Tinton Falls. He is also the Commander of American Legion Post 176 in Matawan. Savolaine gave a detailed and informative talk about the way life was in 1915 when the Women’s Club of Matawan set a precedent of caring for the community. On October 9, 1915, Beatrice Stearn, a Newark attorney, organized a meeting in her home on Stone Road and the six women who attended formed what is now the Women’s Club of Matawan. At the November 1, 1915 meeting, the members present voted in officers to preside over the Club. As President, Mrs. Daniel E. Van Wickle; Vice President Mrs. Arbury Fountain; Second Vice President Mrs. Cleveland Waltrous; Treasurer Miss Agusta Clark; Secretary Mrs. Edward Farry; and Corresponding Secretary Mrs. William Simpson. They also chose the first Chairwomen for Departments within the Club. Civics Chair was Mrs. Edwin Lupton; Home Chair was Mrs. Jacob Lefferts; and Fine Arts Chair was Miss Ann Johnson. The women holding these important positions formulated the ideas and plans of the Women’s Club of Matawan that have continued throughout the span of 100 years!

The first public meeting of the Women’s Club of Matawan was held on November 22, 1915. It was decided that their main goal was to beautify Matawan. Savolaine noted that at this time in history the streets of Matawan were dirty, dusty, dangerous, and noisy. The streets were shared by cars, trolley cars, and horses, as well as an area for the train station. The Women’s Club had studied the town ordinances and knew how to suggest changes that were within the guidelines of these ordinances. One suggestion they made to the Town Council was to use oil trucks to moisten the streets with oil to cut down on the dirt and dust. One major accomplishment by the Club began in November, 1915 when they decided that each child in town should have a Christmas. Funds were scare for families as it was the second year of WW1 so the women planned to have a town Christmas tree and celebration. A 30-foot tree donated by Frank Anderson, a lumber company owner, was placed in a vacant lot near the Van Wickle home. Light bulbs were donated by the townspeople; the electric company kept the lights going for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; and candy was donated by local merchants. Even Judge Terhune contributed, by having oranges sent up from Florida, where he owned a home. In the editorial for the Matawan Town Journal, this comment captured the town’s gratitude to the Club for starting this tradition. “If the Women’s Club never does anything else, this will be their crowning glory – giving the town a Christmas.” In 1918, the Spanish inf luenza hit Matawan and 65 people died. Two doctors’ wives Mrs. Carl Gesswein and Mrs. Cyrus Knecht, along with Health Department members Mrs. Edwin Lupton, Mrs. Charles Geran, and

Mrs. Flora Van Wickle got involved and assisted in caring for the sick. By October, 1918 there were 108 members of the Club. These women cared for those in Matawan who were injured when a ceiling collapsed which occurred due to a massive explosion at an artillery shell loading plant in Morgan, New Jersey. In 1927, the Women’s Club wanted to do something special for the veterans so they joined with the American Legion Post 176 Ladies Auxiliary and pushed the town council for a park to honor the veterans. This became the Veterans Memorial Park of today. Throughout the war effort, the Women’s Club members assisted in selling Liberty Bonds, being plane spotters, and becoming Red Cross workers. In 1920, J. Mabel Brown who was a member of the Club became the publisher of the Matawan Town Journal following the death of her father. In 1935, Aida C. Davis who wrote for the Saturday Evening Post and Colliers Magazine and was President of the Club from 19391941 wrote the words to the song that is used by the Women’s Club of Matawan. Two lines state the courage and warmth of the members in the earlier days but which still hold true today. “Where loyal hearts are strong and true, They dare to plan, they dare to do.” The history of this Club includes starting the Public Health Association; founding the PTA; securing a school nurse and attendance officer; and working to establish the current library with a member as a librarian. Fulfilling their Motto of “Love, Loyalty, and Cooperation,” the Club continues to aid Matawan with food drives for pantries; an annual Wish Tree in the library; sponsoring a high school student to Girls’ Career Institute; and much more. Current President Catherine Savolaine noted that the Women’s Club of Matawan is open to all women in the surrounding area. Presently, there are 25 active members who live in Hazlet, Keyport, Holmdel, Matawan, Aberdeen, Old Bridge, East Brunswick, and Morganville. One of the oldest members is Ann Miller who recently turned 91. The clubhouse building is available for occasion-themed parties and christenings. The Club owns the building and renting it helps to defray the cost of maintaining the historical clubhouse. Catherine said of this special celebration, “I think it is a great honor to be president during the 100-year celebration. This club has a proud history of community service and charity to the town and surrounding areas. It is wonderful that a club whose sole purpose is caring for others can not only survive but thrive over 100 years of change in America.” Matawan Mayor Paul Buccellato presented the Club with two congratulatory proclamations; one from the Matawan Town Council and one from the State of New Jersey; each recognizing all of the contributions the women have made in the 100-year history. “It is phenomenal for any group to reach 100 years but it is particularly wonderful for the Women’s Club. I think the residents of Matawan owe them a great deal for all of the activities that have been provided over the years,” said the Mayor.

THE 18TH ANNUAL KEYPORT SCREAMIN’ COUNTRY JAMBOREE turned Waterfront Park into a two-day music and food festival in October. Locals and visitors alike moseyed on down the borough to enjoy live music, food and the beautiful fall weather. Festival-goers took delight in a Fireworks Bonanza, beer garden, Screamin’ Contests and the always popular Chili Contest, among other festivities all organized by the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative (KBBC). The Chili Contest was hot as ever as eight Keyport eateries cooked-off in the annual competition. Defending champion Burlew’s Seafood & Steak took first prize, beating chili-rivals and wooing chili-lovers for the second year in a row. Runners-up included newcomers Broad Street Diner in a very close second place, followed by local favorite Jersey Shore

Subs & Soups in third. The Country Jamboree and Chili Contest bring droves of music and food lovers to the borough every year. The event is a great experience for both new visitors and local residents alike to explore the Pearl of the Bayshore. “It was a lot of fun,” mentioned Chris Mancuso, a Hazlet local and amateur chili aficionado. “There were some really creative recipes, and every contestant put a different spin on their batch.” Although it was his first time, “I’ll definitely be back again next year,” he said. The Chili Contest was just the savory topping to a fun-filled weekend in Keyport. Between two days full of fantastic live music, country-western dancing and gorgeous weather, Waterfront Park was filled to the brim.

“The turnout was tremendous,” remarked Stuart Koperweis, Executive Director of the KBBC. “We beat our goals and exceeded expectations. It’s all about the borough and the business community. We try to bring in as many new faces into Keyport as we can, which we most definitely did with this year’s Jamboree.” The Keyport Screamin’ Country Jamboree is a collaborative effort led by the KBBC with other municipal groups, volunteer organizations and individuals interested in the revitalization of Keyport’s business district. The KBBC wishes to particularly thank the Middletown Ramblers Square Dance Club for volunteering their talent, and the Friends of the Keyport Library, who arranged for the scarecrows in their recent contest to decorate the downtown area in time for the Jamboree.

Town-wide Aberdeen Day

ATTRACTS RECORD CROWDS
eautiful weather and a number of new events brought record crowds to Aberdeen Day 2015. Coordinated by the Aberdeen Township Recreation Department and Aberdeen Economic Business Council (EBC), the town-wide celebration featured, for the first time, a free movie in the park, a 5k run/walk and circus performances, along with a number of annual favorite events.
“The Aberdeen Township Council is proud of
how the team at Town Hall combined forces with the Economic Business Council to create a townwide event that was enjoyed by residents of all ages,” said Mayor Fred Tagliarini.
“We congratulate Jim
Colabelli and the Recreation Department staff and EBC Chairman Carmine Visone and the entire EBC for the most successful Aberdeen Day ever. I would also like to thank the corporate sponsors for their

Aberdeen Day started on Friday evening with a free movie
in the park, Disney’s “Enchanted,” which brought many movie-goers to Guisti Park in Cliffwood. Saturday’s festivities began early with the Cambridge Park 5k Run/Walk held to benefit the Cambridge Park Elementary Preschool. Close to 200 participants participated, raising over $14,000.
The primary Saturday celebration at Matawan Regional

Likewise, special business-sponsored events at shopping
centers on Routes 34 and 35 attracted strong traffic to each property. On Route 34, big crowds came to Colonial Plaza’s events, where DeMarco’s Catering and Gourmet Deli buttressed its popular annual free food tastings with a four-hour performance by Southern rock band Vintage Properties and a classic car show, while Stop & Shop offered a Customer Appreciation Day and Woof Gang Bakery hosted dog adoptions. Aberdeen Town Square was jam-packed as well, led by Livoti’s Old World Market, which again offered its popular free food tastings, along with games and music, while the Town Square Diner joined in with free food samplings, and special promotions were offered by European Wax Center, Mane-iac Barber Shop and The Hobby Shop. Over at the AMF Center, over 500 attendees watched performances by contestants in the Aberdeen’s Got Talent contest, while the bowling alley offered special pricing all-day. Meanwhile, at Commerce Plaza on Route 35 in Cliffwood, consumers took advantage of special promotions presented by Air Trampoline Sports, Top Notch Sports, Emgenex, Nikki Nails, Xena BBQ , and Doggy Style Grooming.
The day concluded with the family fishing contest at
Cliffwood Beach.

A highlight of the afternoon was the Victorian fashion show given by Keyport Librarian Jackie LaPolla who brought along items from her personal collection. Three high school students modeled clothing from 1837 through 1901, which Jackie noted was during the Reign of Queen Victoria. Sophia

Weichert, Realtors Holmdel Held Pet Adoption Day
On October 17, 2015, Weichert, Realtors Holmdel held a Pet
Adoption Day with the Monmouth County SPCA. Adults and children had the opportunity to interact and play with a variety of cats and dogs. Volunteers from the MCSPCA were on site to answer questions regarding any animal, the animals’ history or the adoption process. Although the MCSPCA sees this as an outreach for people to adopt (and animals did get adopted), people also come and fill out information that eventually leads to an adoption. Free hot dogs and popcorn were given out by Weichert, Realtors Holmdel agents to everyone who came.
Weichert, Realtors Holmdel office will be sponsoring another Pet
Adoption Day in spring 2016.

TURKEYS ON FACTORY FARMS
er il-
PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN NJ State Director | The Humane Society of the United States
As always, we will celebrate the idea of giving thanks this month.
But given the table fare for the vast majority of people, we are less than enthusiastic about what we know happens to turkeys on factory farms in the run-up to our American holiday. Americans eat more meat than just about any nation in the world, second to Luxembourg only, and most of the turkey products are consumed in November and December.
While the sheer volume of animal products consumed has
enormous implications for animals, the environment and rural communities, the means of production also is an issue. Animals’ health, fitness, and welfare matter and among farm animals, there’s no food-producing animal who’s been more adversely manipulated from a breeding and genetics perspective than the turkey.

As many of us have seen in our area, our wild turkeys are alert
and fast-flying, active during the day and perched in trees to sleep at night. But most industrially produced turkeys are crammed inside giant, overcrowded warehouses, and have been bred to grow so unnaturally large at such a quick pace that by the end of their lives, many have trouble even standing or walking. They have such massive chests that the birds are unable to mate naturally anymore, meaning that nearly all farm-raised turkeys come about through artificial insemination. Some of these animals, just weeks old, die from heart attacks.
So this holiday season, be grateful. But also be conscious and
aware, especially for turkeys, since custom places them at the center of the plate and the American table. For those who will be eating turkey, there are more and more humane-minded farmers who select for healthier birds and keep the animals in better, more livable conditions. That’s a positive development, with farmers exhibiting some basic care and respect for their animals. And for those of you who want to reduce or abstain from meat consumption, it’s easier than ever to do. There are plant-based “meat” products that are hearty, healthy, and of a familiar form. These options give celebrants an opportunity to have Thanksgiving with all the fixings, minus the animals.
Happy Thanksgiving and visit www.humanesociety.org for more
information.
