K
eyport’s third annual Community Day was held on March 31 at Keyport High School and included music, entertainment, informational booths about the town’s diverse organizations, and school program displays by the students of Keyport High School and Keyport Central School. Most of the organizations who had a table offered pamphlets and free giveaways to visitors. Castle of Dreams Animal Rescue had two dogs in search of homes and spoke with many visitors about becoming foster families to the animals. Keyport Public Library displayed books and gave away small craft packages. Troop Leader Frank Wroblewski of Cub Scout Troop #364 and his son Nicholas explained the scouting program and what their troop does throughout the year. They meet on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. at Keyport Middle School. Members of the troop joined Keyport Kiwanis Club members in the kitchen to serve hot dogs and hamburgers. Meridian Fitness and Wellness discussed the pluses of joining their facility and assisted some visitors in learning a few basic stretches. Keyport Food Pantry welcomed food donations.

Keyport Community Day cont.
K
eyport High School’s Key Club sought donations for their year long project of raising monies for maternal and neonatal tetanus vaccines. Many school displays showed the artistic talent of Kindergarten through sixth grade students. Jack DiPaolo who attends Keyport Central contributed a clay turtle he made to the display for his class. Keyport Drug Alliance shared their participation in making the Prom safe each year with reminders on not drinking and driving imprinted on key chains for students. They visit classrooms and discuss the perils of drugs and alcohol. There are even groups within the high school, such as Lifeline and The VIPS who discuss the dangers of smoking, alcohol, and abusive relationship. They are a teens-forteens support group. Throughout the day, Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Lisa Savoia, called raffle tickets for baskets, movie tickets, and gift certificates for local restaurants. “The kids in this district are great people and every one of them deserves to be successful!” Mrs. Savoia emphasized the positive wonderful experience of having Keyport Community Day.
About an hour into the day, Tom Durnin of “America’s Got Talent” captured the attention of the little ones and many adults with his puppeteer antics and by hypnotizing one of the firefighters from Engine 74. Near the end of the day, Keyport Indians Cheerleaders performed “Footloose” for the crowd that gathered in the gym. This team qualified for the 2011 American Youth Cheer Nationals Championships in the Junior Midget Division and traveled to Florida to perform. DJ Double C Productions, LLC kept the music going throughout the day inside and in the cafeteria little ones could venture into the Monster Inflatable Slide or get some pointers from Keyport High School Baseball/ Softball team members. Numerous Keyport businesses and organizations filled the gym and talked with visitors all day. Tom’s Ford offered a Drive One 4UR School chance to test drive a Ford and have Keyport Schools receive a donation. A great community day and a wonderful opportunity to meet and talk with business owners, students, and organizational leaders was enjoyed at the third Keyport Community Day.

Union Beach Mayor Unveils McDonald’s
New Upscale Restaurant Design
Mayor Cuts Ribbon to Make It Official
M
cDonald’s Restaurants have a new look and the Bayshore area’s fi rst McDonald’s to complete the redesign is located at 825 Route 36, Union Beach. This enhanced restaurant appearance and layout will benefit local area residents through improved customer conveniences and a contemporary dining experience. McDonald’s customers will see dynamic changes to the interior and exterior of the building reflecting an upscale look and feel to the dining environment. In addition to the more efficient side by side drive thru and modern exterior, McDonald’s customers can now enjoy free Wi-Fi, comfortable lighting and flat screen televisions throughout the restaurant. The Mayor and local dignitaries helped to make the event official. Other guests included members of the Town Council as well as the Fire Chief, Robert Laberta and the Chief of Union Beach’s First Aid, Carlos Rodriguez. Mayor Paul Smith wielded a large golden scissors to cut the ceremonial ribbon covered in dollar bills. Tony Marinello, the owner, quickly handed the ribbon over to Chief Laberta for the benefit of Union Beach’s Fire Department.
“This is a classic example of local government and private enterprise working together to create jobs and at the same time provide an enhanced dining experience for the community to enjoy,” said Tony Marinello, during the breakfast ceremony. “This new McDonald’s speaks to the needs of our customers and our community.” A special sweepstakes featuring gifts by many of the local area merchants and an appearance by Ronald McDonald is part of the restaurant’s grand opening celebration. The local merchants participating in the Grand Opening Sweepstakes are IEI Electronics, H&R Block, Brunswick Zone, Meridian Fitness and Wellness, New Concepts Limousines, Computech, Keansburg Pharmacy, Crown Tire, Pieros and Branch Brook Company..

T
he Hazlet Thunderette Baton Twirling Association is a non-profit organization whose mission is to give young girls the opportunity to twirl and experience state, national and regional competitions, as well as group and solo events. Their goal is to teach the girls leadership and commitment, allowing them to feel confident through learning twirling skills and self-expression. The girls also have the chance to receive scholarships to schools with twirling lines, should they decide to continue twirling into adulthood. The girls come from almost every school in Hazlet Township including Lillian Drive, Cove Road, Beers Street, Raritan Valley, St. Benedict’s, Hazlet Middle School, and Raritan High School. They also have a few girls from Memorial School in Union Beach and The Marine Academy of Science and Technology. “We really have a good mix of girls from different places which is nice because none of them really go to school together so it is a way for them to make friends,” says Coach Caitlyn Kempf. Caitlyn has been a Hazlet Thunderette coach for nine years, twirling with the Thunderettes from age 4 through 18. She has competed in solo competitions in Las Vegas and the America’s Youth on Parade (AYOP) Nationals at Notre Dame University. Each team usually consists of seven girls, but can sometimes have as many as nine. Every October the girls are evaluated by their coaches and placed on a team based on age, skill level, and a few other factors from the previous year. New twirlers are also evaluated and placed on one of two new twirler teams to learn basic twirling skills. Caitlyn says, “It’s fun and we create a really fun environment for
our new twirlers so I would encourage anyone that was interested to come and give it a try!” As far as preparation is concerned, the Hazlet Thunderettes run through their routines until the group can complete the routine without dropping more than three times. A team meeting is held to discuss hair, makeup and costume choices. Caitlyn says, “Sometimes we will have a pep talk usually focusing on the fact that the reason we twirl is because it is fun, so as long as the girls do their best, smile big, and have fun, then everyone will be happy for them.” To the Hazlet Thunderettes, this team is like family. The coaches have known some of the girls from age five and have gotten to watch them grow into adulthood. The twirlers look up to their coaches like big sisters and the coaches take the twirlers under their wings much like a sister would. Not only do the girls learn from their coaches, the coaches get the opportunity to learn from the twirlers in return. Caitlyn said, “[The twirlers] have taught me to grow and to be a better leader. They have taught me to be supportive even when things don’t go as well as we planned. Best of all they taught me to let loose and have fun.” The Hazlet Thunderettes usually go to competitions in Rahway and Bloomfield, New Jersey and compete in Exton, Pennsylvania once a year. In February 2013, a few of the teams will be sent to Twirlmania in Disney World. For registration dates or more information about the Hazlet Thunderettes please visit http://mickalina.webs.com/ or their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ HazletThunderettes.

CUPCAKE PALOOZA TO BENEFIT GARDEN STATE PLAYERS SUMMER MUSICAL AND NEW HOLMDEL PEDIATRIC CARE CENTER
C
upcake Palooza 2012 was held on April 10 at Trinity Restaurant in Keyport and offered an exclusive theater and dinner gift auction, specialty cupcakes, cocktails, and family fun. The event was a benefit for the Garden State Players’ Summer Musical, Footloose. A portion of the proceeds from Cupcake Palooza 2012 will be donated to Meridian Healthcare’s new Pediatric Care Center located at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel. Founder and Managing Director of Garden State Players, Lauren Matthews Raad, said, “We received a great response from local restaurants and community theaters when they were asked to donate to our theater and dinner gift auction.” Mrs. Raad and her husband Charles, who is the theater’s Business Director, have a 10 year old daughter Gabriella. She is the inspiration for the founding of Garden State Players. Mrs. Raad, who is an attorney, took a leave of absence to care for mother who was ill and when the time came to return to her career, she chose to follow her heart and her passion for the theater instead of returning to practice law. Before going to law school, she had minored in theater management in college and successfully completed a prestigious marketing internship at the nationally recognized World -Class Theater George Street Playhouse. Her choice to give back to the community through her lifelong passion for theater resulted in the opening of Garden State Players. “The community’s involvement is amazing. Everyone who becomes involved has so much heart. We are so excited about this event and the many more to come. We want to perform as well as fund raise for non-profits. This is all going to be electrifying!” shared Artistic Director Chuck Cutaia. Charles Merla of Trinity Restaurant was pleased to have been introduced to Mrs. Raad and to be able to give Garden State Players a venue in which to perform and fund raise. “This is a great group. It’s nice to be able to help them out and to know they are bringing the Arts to Keyport. I am proud to be a part
of that.” Mr. Merla noted that he believes Keyport has great architecture, a great waterfront, and it’s a real community where people know one another. “It’s a great place to raise children,” he added. Mr. Merla made the specialty cupcakes for this event that included his favorite, Vanilla Chai.

Happenings KEYPORT RECREATION SPONSORS ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT
K
STORY SuSan Murphy
eyport’s Department of Recreation held their seventh annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 7 at Waterfront Park. There were also many attractions for the little ones that included face painting, sack races, egg races, bean bag throw, small games of chance, and of course, a picture with the Easter Bunny. All activities were free. A DJ kept the music going and from time to time a familiar song had the young ones dancing on the grass. There were also members of Keyport’s Baseball and Softball teams on hand to help the little ones practice hitting the ball and running all the bases.
KEYPORT NEWS SPRING HAS SPRUNG IN KEYPORT
The unseasonably gorgeous weather has really inspired the residents of the Borough of Keyport to take extra care in sprucing up their homes and businesses. This year the Keyport Garden Club will be holding the Keyport Garden Walk June 9 and 10. This tour is a much anticipated event that will highlight Keyport’s magnificent private and public gardens. The downtown and waterfront area will be alive with color and activity for all to enjoy. For more information, visit Keyportonline.com

KEYPORT BAYSHORE BUSINESS COOPERATIVE
Keyport Bayshore Business Cooperative (KBBC) is very excited to announce the hiring of Stuart Z. Koperweis as their new Executive Director. Stuart comes to the borough as an expert in downtown revitalization via public private
partnerships, with special talents in business attraction via economic growth. Under the new leadership and guidance of the newly formed board of trustees of the Keyport BBC, they are now positioned for a true renaissance. With the recent waterfront revitalization and the scheduling of numerous events, through the early summer and fall, they will be able to promote and expand the circle of influence the borough has with locals and tourists alike. I am sure you will join us and the business community of Keyport to extend a heartfelt welcome to its newest professional member. FIRE DEPARTMENT ANNUAL INSPECTION
For the past several decades, on the first Saturday of May, at 6:00 p.m., the Borough of Keyport firefighters present for inspection their fire fighting apparatus for inspection by the Borough’s Public Officials. This formal inspection each year allows the Borough residents and officials the opportunity to view each of the fire company’s trucks and engines, and is also a great opportunity to meet greet and view the Borough’s numerous firefighter volunteers.
There was enough of a variety of activities for all age groups so that everyone kept busy for the two and a half hour event. The much anticipated egg hunt was over in a flash once the 100 children ages two to preteen dashed for the colorful plastic eggs strewn all over two large grassy areas of the park. The competition was fierce but the speed with which the little ones grabbed the eggs was unbelievable. The afternoon festivities gave children the chance to try everything going on and allowed parents the opportunity to socialize with friends and family.

TEMPLE SHALOM BEACH SWEEP MAY 20, 2012
T
emple Shalom of Aberdeen will be hosting a Beach Sweep with Clean Ocean Action on Sunday, May 20. COA partnered with Temple Shalom last year to begin Sweeps on a Sunday. Participants will meet at Temple Shalom at 9:30 a.m. for a breakfast presentation by a COA Pollution Prevention speaker on maintaining the health of the shore. At 10:30 a.m., the group will caravan over to Cliffwood Beach, the target of the day’s activities. If you go directly to the cleanup event, seek out a beach captain for your assignment. Volunteers of all ages are welcome: we will pick up and record trash collected. Hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bring your own picnic if you wish to enjoy the beach we’ve just cleaned. In 1985, COA launched the region’s first Beach Sweeps program to rid beaches of debris that is unsightly and often harmful to wildlife. COA’s Beach Sweeps is one of the longest running cleanups of its kind in the world. They offer these tips for a successful Sweep: • • • • •
Attend rain or shine Bring and wear gloves Dress for the weather Wear sunscreen Wear closed, hard-soled shoes
• • • • •
Stay away from large drums Be careful of sharp objects Stay out of dunes Respect wildlife Do not lift anything too heavy
The Temple is located at 5 Ayrmont Lane in Aberdeen. For more information or to indicate your participation, contact Margo at biomusicmm@aol.com.

HAZLET HAPPENINGS A Message from Mayor Dave Tinker Dear fellow resident, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss the recently adopted Hazlet Township 2012 budget. After completing our budget hearings we were able to come up with an operating budget with no increase to taxpayers. We also instituted some best practices with the budget process, those being a Capital Funding Plan which looks forward to 2016 and the associated effects this Capital Plan would have on our Debt Service. Thanks to the many changes to our financial operations we implemented last year and continued this year, our operations budget remained flat in 2012—with no tax increase to support salaries, insurance, supplies, fuel
Hazlet Swim And Tennis Club Open House To Unveil Upgrades And New Snack Bar Concessions Everyone interested in either joining the Hazlet Swim & Tennis Club or seeing the changes planned for the new season are invited to come to our annual Open House to be held on Saturday May 12th from noon until 4:00 p.m. The Open House is held annually so residents and friends alike can see what a great facility we have right here in the heart of the Bayshore. One of the most exciting changes this year is the completely new “Belly Flop Café” which will completely revolutionize the club’s popular concession stands. With a new menu, look and approach, the Café will be one more facet in the rebirth of the “New” Hazlet Swim and Tennis Club. We are also happy to report that Lynne Cefalo, former coach of the swim team at the Middletown Pool Club, will be an assistant coach along with Fred McDonald when they join Head Coach Helen McDonald in a newly expanded Hazlet Hammerheads Swim Team as they take to the water in just a few weeks! With dozens of new families from Hazlet and Middletown and other area communities, the club will certainly be hopping, but there is plenty of room for everyone and there are still memberships available. Stop by the open house or log in to www. HazletTwp.org/swim to sign up today.
and the other day to day expenses of running our community). However we heard you. In meeting after meeting residents would speak during the public portion and tell us of the poor conditions of their streets. In addition some of our neighborhood parks are in bad shape and our fleet in general, including DPW and Police are aging. We felt it would be irresponsible for the Township Committee to continue to ignore these problems. Coming in with a flat operating budget we decided to invest in the future of Hazlet. The increase in taxes for 2012 will go to fund these critical Capital projects. This increase on the average household will about $5.44 per month—all for improvements in capital projects and municipal infrastructure. Let me explain what this increase will fund. We plan on making improvements to our police department firearms qualification range. We will purchase a total of ten new police patrol vehicles—most replacing vehicles with more than 100,000 miles on them. Our DPW will purchase a new dump truck with plow, an automatic recycling truck and an asphalt hot box for pothole repair. Our
MUNICIPAL OPEN HOUSE TO FEATURE “TOUCH-ATRUCK!” The township will hold its first ever Municipal Open House on Saturday, May 12 from noon until 2:00 p.m in Veterans Park. Come out to meet and interact with all of your community groups, municipal offices and area organizations as they gather in the Hazlet Swim and Tennis Club to greet you and answer your questions. Do you have kids that just love big trucks and emergency vehicles? Maybe you just want to see what kind of equipment your municipality relies upon to keep your town running and safe? Parked around the Swim Club roadway will be dump trucks, ambulances, police cars, construction trucks, fire apparatus, you name it! All available for you and your family to get up close and personal with these important and hard working tools of our town. Admission is completely free!
UPCOMING ELECTION DATES Primary Election – June 5, 2012 Polls Open from 6:00 a.m – 8:00 p.m.
Office of Emergency Management will receive a new command vehicle. We have also included funds for improving site safety and security at Town Hall and around Veterans Park and for other improvements to Veteran’s Park. Additionally, for the first time ever, we will have a long-term park improvement plan, which will fund annual improvements in Hazlet’s neighborhood parks. But most importantly, we are committed to at least $500,000 per year for much needed road improvements. These monies are in addition to any grant monies we may receive. I know that I am proud of this budget as I feel that this is fiscally responsible. We have been able to work through 2% budget caps and are at a point in time when we are able to invest in the future of Hazlet. This budget allows us to keep Hazlet the great place it is to live and raise a family.

FOREST FIRE DANGER HIGH
T
he New Jersey Forest Fire Service has issued fire danger alerts and implemented stage one campfire restrictions throughout New Jersey today as prolonged dry and windy conditions continue in the state. “It is paramount that New Jersey residents and visitors exercise extreme caution to prevent wildfires at this particularly vulnerable time, with little rain and low humidity,” said State Forest Fire Service Acting Chief Michael Drake. “The Forest Fire Service is increasing fire patrols and we are increasing our response capabilities as this drying trend continues.” The fire danger level is determined to be very high by the Forest Fire Service in Burlington, Monmouth and Ocean counties, as well as Middlesex County south of the Raritan River. The level is high in many other parts of the state. A red flag warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, alerting residents of New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania to the potential for wildfires. Restrictions are placed on open fires and use of equipment that may cause sparks. For more information, visit www.njwildfire.org
Ninety-nine percent of all wildfires in New Jersey are caused by human activity, usually carelessness, negligence or arson. Follow these guidelines to reduce the risk of fires: • Use ashtrays in vehicles. Discarding cigarettes, matches and smoking materials is a violation of New Jersey law. • Obtain necessary permits for campfires. Don’t leave fires unattended. Douse them completely. • Keep matches and lighters away from children. Teach them the dangers of fire. • People living in the forest should maintain a defensible buffer by clearing vegetation within 30 feet of any structures. Also, make sure fire trucks can pass down your driveway. • Report suspicious vehicles and individuals. Arson is a major cause of forest fires in New Jersey.

any high school students view prom or graduation as a rite of passage into an adult world in which alcohol and celebrations go hand in hand. Some parents support this belief by hosting prom or graduation parties that include their child’s friends where alcohol is provided. Adults providing alcohol to underage youth sends a mixed message and can only add to a teenager’s confusion about the acceptability of drinking. This also sends the message to teens that they do not have to obey the law. It is illegal, unsafe, and unhealthy for anyone under the age of 21 to drink alcohol. Remember – a teenager’s brain is still developing and it is very sensitive to alcohol’s effects on judgment and decision-making. RIVERVIEW MEDICAL CENTER ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION DONATION Gift Continues Momentum of the Center for Surgical Excellence at Riverview
Laura and Richard Saker
R
iverview Medical Center announced a $1 million charitable donation from Saker ShopRites
to Meridian Health to benefit the Life. Changing. Campaign for Surgical Excellence at Riverview. The donation will help support the construction of Riverview’s new 22,000 square foot center for surgical excellence, and effectively vaults the campaign well past the $15 million fundraising goal. The project, which is currently underway includes: two sophisticated specialty surgical suites, renovated post-anesthesia care area, relocated and renovated surgical day stay, and a state-of-theart conference and educational center. This advancement will allow patients to continue to receive advanced surgical procedures close to home, without having to travel to New York City or elsewhere.
“Our family is extremely proud and honored to be a part of a project that is going to have such a life-changing impact on the surrounding communities,” said Laura. “We feel it is important to support the community we call home,” said Richard. “Laura and I have always had a deep affection for Riverview Medical Center where our children were born and where our family members have always been well cared for. When we heard about the new center being built, we wanted to do what we could to help make it happen.”
The Saker family has spent a lifetime sharing their blessings. Richard currently serves as a member of the Riverview Medical Center Foundation board of trustees. As president and chief executive officer of Saker Holdings Corporation, and Saker ShopRites, Inc., Richard has harnessed the power of this huge enterprise to benefit countless lives and the quality of life for the residents of Monmouth and Ocean counties. Together with his wife Laura, a professional educator, dancer, and
Richard serves on the boards of Wakefern Food Corporation, the New Jersey Food Council, the Academy of Food Marketing at St Joseph’s University, and the Joan Dancy and People with ALS Foundation. Both Richard and Laura have been recognized by singer Andrea Bocelli for their charitable work with the Vision of Children Foundation and are steadfast supporters of the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. In the past year alone, over 1,500 Central NJ organizations
choreographer, they have both helped to raise millions of dollars to benefit the hungry, and many other worthwhile causes.
have benefited from Saker ShopRites charitable donations. In addition, Saker ShopRites supports the “ShopRite Partners in Caring” program, a charity dedicated to the fight against hunger, where this year over 1000 charities have received a portion of the $2 million donated by “ShopRite Partners in Caring”. As third generation in a family business, Richard remains loyal to his roots in Monmouth County and to his hometown of Freehold; site of the first family owned and operated Saker’s market, established in 1906 by his grandparents. Together with Laura who serves on the boards of the Monmouth County SPCA, Two River Theater Company, Monmouth Conservation Foundation, and the Drumthwacket Foundation, they have maintained a decades-long Saker family tradition of giving back to the community in which they work and live. “We are grateful for the long-standing commitment to Riverview Medical Center by one of Monmouth County’s most charitable families,” says David Flood, president of the Meridian Health Foundation. “This gift is a tangible affirmation of our commitment as
the healthcare heart of our community and provides critical support for the programs and services we are developing. Thanks to their generosity and vision, the Sakers have put this campaign over the top, while contributing to a momentum that has us ahead in our plans for a second phase of growth for Riverview that we will be sharing with community shortly. This great community demands and deserves superior healthcare, and Riverview is committed to delivering just that with every dollar invested.” “The Saker’s generosity is inspiring,” says Tim Hogan, FACHE, regional president of Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital. “People rightly acknowledge that Riverview has had an exceptional past. But exceptional isn’t going to be good enough for the future; as healthcare moves forward we need to be at the forefront of patient care. The campaign provides an opportunity for any and all community members to put a personal stamp on this historic project — one that will provide state-of-the-art healthcare for generations to come.”

Princess, a Bull Terrier, is a great dog that was thrown in a high kill shelter in Tennessee along with her three little babies. She is a wonderful dog and a Castle of Dreams favorite. She is loving, friendly, and was a great Mommy to her puppies. She has a beautiful look and markings. She loves people and other dogs. Jake is a Dachshund, approx six years old, but full of spunk. He was rescued from Missouri where they are notorious for puppy mills. He is crate trained and is learning housebreaking skills. He loves his squeaky toy and loves balls. He is very socialized and would make a great addition to a forever family. Daisee was rescued from Georgia, along with her litter of eight. She was a great mommy, but very shy and scared around people. She adjusted well in her foster home and will do well if given enough time and patience. She is a real sweetheart and is really coming out of her shell. She is only about 28 lbs and, although shy, she is a very good dog.
Bindy is such a sweet girl. She gets along great with the other dogs, doesn’t bother the cats, and wouldn’t hurt a fly. She is a Beagle Corgi Mix. She has put on some much needed weight. She is still a pup and loves to play and chew on things, but she just isn’t sure what she can have and will only get the toy when offered to her. She still has a complete puppy attitude and is very submissive. She will make the perfect family dog. Perfect size and temperament for kids. Sklyer is a little girl that hasn’t had a great start. As adorable as she is, she was left tied to the fence of an animal shelter. She is currently in a home with another dog, cat, bird, and children she is wonderful with them all. She loves to play with her toys, go for walks, give kisses, and cuddle up next to anyone who will have her, be it a human, or another animal. Skyler is going to be a wonderful and loyal companion to someone...could that be you?

Matawan and Aberdeen Happenings ABERDEEN ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT EXPANDED ABERDEEN DAY FESTIVITIES ON 9/22 As plans take shape for the redesigned Aberdeen Day Celebration on Saturday, September 22, Aberdeen’s Recreation Department and Business Council have announced additional sponsorship opportunities for local businesses and organizations. This year, for the fi rst time, there will be a special Merchant Sponsorship category featuring six levels ranging from $50 to $500 for a variety of new sponsorship vehicles. These include sponsorships of a pair of large highway banners on Routes 34 and 35 promoting Aberdeen Day; advertising banners at the fi rst-ever ‘Mayor’s Trophy’ evening softball game between the township’s fi re companies and police department; sponsorship of the fi rst-ever ‘Aberdeen’s Got Talent’ event that will be held at the AMF Shopping Center on Route 34; signage and literature distribution within the new Aberdeen Business Council booth at the traditional Aberdeen Day celebration at Matawan Regional High School; and business listings on free t-shirts that will be distributed that day. The Merchant Sponsorships will join the traditional categories offering four different levels of sponsorship ranging in price from $250 to $1,000. The Premier, Platinum, Gold and Silver Packages offer exposure prior to and during Aberdeen Day, including mentions on the township website, and in press releases, advertising and on signage at high school-based events. In addition to the traditional opportunities for businesses to set up tables or booths at the high school, those located within participating shopping centers will now have the option to also set up special sidewalk or parking lot displays on Aberdeen Day. The event participation fee for merchants displaying at the high school or outside their business location is $40 per site. As previously announced, the high school will remain the setting for the traditional afternoon (noon to 4:00 p.m.) Aberdeen Day celebration incorporating a Classic Car Show, entertainment, children’s rides, vendor tables, food concessions, and a crafts fair. However, plans have been confi rmed for several new events throughout the day at various locations including: • A fi shing contest at Cliffwood Beach from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; • Day-long sidewalk sales and product/service demonstrations at participating shopping centers; • Aberdeen’s Got Talent at the AMF Shopping Center from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and • A ‘Mayor’s Trophy’ softball game between the police department and fi re companies at Fireman’s Field at 7:30 p.m. Additionally, the Business Council is working on a ‘Dine Aberdeen’ coupon program offering special discounts at participating Aberdeen restaurants from morning to night “These new elements reflect the efforts of our administration and Business Council to make Aberdeen Day a platform to expose residents of our community and surrounding towns to more of what the township and its businesses have to offer,” said Township Manager Holly Reycraft. “The members of our Business Council are genuinely excited about this year’s events and sponsorship opportunities, and we hope that others who do business here in Aberdeen will jump on the bandwagon as participants and sponsors.” For more information or to obtain sponsorship materials, contact Director of Recreation Jim Colabelli at 732.583.4200, ext. 134, 129, or 173. For information regarding the planned sidewalk sales, Dine Aberdeen program and joint advertising programs, contact the Aberdeen Business Council at 732.583.4200, ext. 103 or email bac@ aberdeennj.org.
NEWS FROM THE MATAWAN ABERDEEN PUBLIC LIBRARY We’re always growing, changing, and trying new things here at MAPL and this spring is no exception! If you have an e-reader, I hope you have a library card so that you can download books for free from our website (www.matawanaberdeenlibrary.com)! There are actually two ways to download – from eLibraryNJ (bestsellers and the most popular titles) and from our new service: Freading. With Freading, the selection is more eclectic, but there is no wait for the books you want. If you have questions on how to download or about the functions of your e-reader device, our staff will be happy to help you. We also have an E-reader Hour on Saturdays at 2pm which is time dedicated to solving problems with your Nook, Kindle or other device. In the Children’s Department, we just installed an Early Literacy Station for the littlest of our patrons. This computer is pre-loaded with educational games in English and Spanish for children ages 2-8 and is already very popular. We also have two new items that patrons can borrow from the Children’s Department: Playaway Views and portable educational games. The Views are small, hand-held devices that are pre-loaded with stories or videos for pre-schoolers and young school-age children. These mini-tablets are durable and make car trips, grocery store visits, and even quiet times at home a fun learning experience. The Views are available now for check-out. The educational games are vinyl and come in a zippered pouch that contains game pieces and dice, a book, and worksheets. Children can learn shapes, colors, letters, parts of the body, and more -- in some cases, in both English and Spanish. The games are being processed and will be available for check-out soon. Lastly, the library will be making free museum passes available to patrons starting in June. Thanks to generous fi nancial support from the Friends of the Library, we will be offering passes to the Natural History Museum, the Guggenheim and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan in New York City, and Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Look for these offerings to be made available before school lets out for the summer. The library is located at 165 Main Street, Matawan. We are open seven days a week [Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am-9pm; Tuesday and Friday from 9am-6pm; Saturday 9am-5pm; and Sunday 12-5pm] and can be reached at 732.583.9100 or through the web at www.matawanaberdeenlibrary.com. T
he Veteran’s of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 4303, held an awards ceremony on April 1 at its headquarters in Hazlet, commemorating charitable and patriotic residents and VFW members for their work in their communities. Award recipients included individuals from different fields, all working towards the same goal, charitable service.
grateful for what John [Conti] had done to get me the award. I think it is great that people get awarded for what they do, but I’m kind of humble when it comes to that. Helping people is one of the things I believe in.”
Over time, the VFW has witnessed outstanding behavior from local citizens and chose to recognize them for their work on this particular day. Also honored were VFW members with notable accomplishments. Some winners were nominated by people who thought they deserved it, and others were chosen by a small committee headed by John Conti, VFW Commander of the Post 4303.
Fireman John “JB” Beslanovitz was recognized as Man of the Year. He was awarded this prestigious award for the district and the state and is now in the running for the national title. Officer Robert M. Mulligan was noted for his dedication and service to the community. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Katie Dischler was celebrated for her devotion to her field.
Surgeon William Bailey was recognized for his 12 years of service as a surgeon.
“We recognize them for their contributions to the VFW. We also awarded some of our own members,” Conti said.
Teachers recognized by the VFW are as follows:
Paul Hanlon was the past president and one of the originating founders of the Men’s Auxiliary for Post 4303.
Conti chose to revamp the awards ceremony last year when he was elected commander of the post and will continue the tradition next year now that he has been re-elected for the same position in 2012. “It’s a nice thing to recognize people for what they do for the VFW and so forth, and it does bring morale up,” Conti added. “It’s our way of letting the community know that we appreciate everything that they do for us and for our community,” said Robert Mulligan, father of award winner Officer Robert M. Mulligan. Man of the Year recipient, John “JB” Beslanovitz said “I was really honored and didn’t think I would receive an award for the things I normally do anyway. I will continue to collect on the highway for the three hospitals. I will still be collecting fire gear. If I didn’t receive it, it would have been fine but I am
Award Winners are as follows: Man of the Year:
Sondra Lougee from Lillian Drive Elementary School, Grade K-5James Cermak from Hazlet Middle School, Grade 6-8 Lorelei Testino from Raritan High School, Grade 9-12 Principal Colleen Rafder from Union Avenue Middle School Local residents noted for their patriotic and charitable work are as follows: Eagle Scout Michael Kutko, Troupe 136 Eagle Scout Andrew Paul Kelly, Troupe 134 VFW Voice of Democracy First Place Winner: Marissa A. Sharkey Patriot’s Pen First Place Winner: Caroline Sparacino
VFW Member Recognitions Three-year president of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Carol Struszkiewicz VFW past president Shirley Sachs for her 60 plus years of service. Sachs chaired all of the chairs in the VFW, including District 6.
Lounge Chairman Charles Rizzie has been with the VFW for more than 15 years. Quarter Master Eugene Balestriere was awarded for 10 years of service.
The VFW proudly honored its current members for their many years of service, but new soldiers from recent wars are beginning to join and that is a good thing, Conti says, because the younger members are slowly taking over for the older ones. The WWII veterans are slowly fading away and now the VFW mostly consists of Korean and Vietnam veterans. The organization is hoping to bring in more members to carry on traditions such as the annual awards ceremony. The VFW also plans to continue recognizing citizens for their service to their communities.
