Happy New Year! A new year is a good time to reflect on the changes we want or need to make, and resolve to follow through on those changes. It’s those dreaded New Year Resolutions that we need to keep (and we should), whether it is spending more time with your family, getting your financial house in order, reducing stress, becoming a healthier you, or volunteering to help others. Any change you resolve to do for becoming a better you is always a good one – so do it! Looking forward, we at Community Magazine are really excited for 2014. In March, we will be celebrating our 3rd anniversary, and this year we will be adding services to our business to better serve our customers, as well as rolling out some big news in the upcoming months. Our magazines are delivered monthly to over 35,000 homes and businesses in Aberdeen, Colts Neck, Keyport, Hazlet, Holmdel, Matawan and Lincroft – and we feel a large amount of social responsibility on our shoulders to bring you the good news in your communities. So we ask you, as our treasured readers, to keep sending in your thoughts and suggestions. You might not realize, but most of the stories on the pages you read are comprised of your fellow neighbors informing us about news they think should be in the magazine. Our name is Community Magazine, and that’s how we will remain, for the community! We thank “YOU” and look forward to being a part of your family and home every month! All my best to you in 2014,

Holmdel Village School
Embraces Giving Tree STORY SUSAN MURPHY
N
ine years ago, Holmdel Village School second grade teacher Mrs. Jami Kenney started “The Giving Tree” in an effort to assist Operation Sleighbells, an event sponsored by the Monmouth County Family and Children Services of Long Branch to help those in need. “It is a nice way for the children to be able to buy gifts and provide needed items. It is a very special thing for the children to take part in,” Kenney said. “Teaching children the importance of giving is a true gift in itself. I am so proud of all the children at Village School.” Students received cards detailing what to buy for children in need. “Some people didn’t have that much so we got things they needed,” said Colin. Village School students embraced the season of giving, recognizing the importance of clothing to many children in Monmouth County. “It makes me really happy. Giving away these things is awesome!” said Nicole. “This was the first year the PSA assisted us. They have been super supportive,” said Kenney. She had asked the PSA to coordinate the project with her and over 400 families and staff members of Village School participated, noted PSA President Dina D’Ambrosi. She said that aside from the initial amount of cards they ordered that listed the children’s wishes, more were needed, as other families wanted to be a part of the project. “We asked those families to purchase pajamas in any size for a boy or girl and we included them with the Giving Tree donations,” D’Ambrosi said. The driver picking up the piles of gifts donated by students said Village School held the record for the largest pickup, with so many gifts the driver had to come back for a second load. D’Ambrosi commended all who participated in the Giving Tree. “I am absolutely delighted with the response from Village School. This is a great example of our community coming together to help those in need during the holiday season.” Principal Brian Schillaci was grateful to everyone involved. “We could not be more proud of the efforts of our school community in making the Giving Tree a very successful experience again this year! Our students, families, and staff donated over 400 gifts to assist those in need. This speaks volumes to our Village School community in their dedication to helping others. We offer a very special thank you to Mrs. Jami Kenney, second grade teacher, and Mrs. D’Ambrosi, president of our parent group. This experience marked a true collaboration between staff and parents to bring the best to Village School, and most importantly, those in need during holiday time!”

FAMILY FUN AT HOLIDAY FESTIVAL STORY SUSAN MURPHY
D
earborn Market celebrated the holidays in a big way during their Holiday Festival on December 7 and 8. The Luccarelli family, owners of Dearborn Market, is both community and family-oriented, so this two-day event combined family fun as well as an opportunity to give back to those in the community who are in need. The event hosted a children’s Coat Drive for BRIDGES Outreach, which benefited the children in Monmouth and Ocean Counties whose families were affected by Super Storm Sandy, many of which are still displaced from their homes.
10
Also throughout the holidays, donations given at Dearborn Market checkouts were sent to Lunch Break in Red Bank to help support the nonprofit organization that provides food, clothing and fellowship to community members in need. President of Dearborn Market Frank Luccarelli said, “These two days were great! Santa Claus has a way of bringing out the best in everyone!” Family fun during the Holiday Festival meant, of course, a visit with Santa. Children eagerly waited for their turn to tell Santa their Christmas wishes.
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
Once they reached Mr. Claus, parents were able to take their own photos of the memorable event. Well over 100 little ones were able to share a magical moment with the jolly man in red. Tucked in a corner of the greenhouse was an artist who painted the children’s hands with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or a Gingerbread Boy or Girl. Throughout the day, a DJ played holiday songs that had most everyone singing or swaying to the music. Once outdoors, guests visited the Living Nativity featuring some very special animals.

F rosty’s Holiday Shopping
olts Neck PTO held their annual Frosty’s Holiday Shopping and Bazaar on December 7 at Conover Road Primary School. Children entered a special kid-size entrance into the cafeteria where Middle School volunteers and Colts Neck PTO members assisted the younger shoppers in selecting the perfect gifts for family members. On the stage, Colts Neck Recreation volunteers sponsored a crafts project that gave the little ones an opportunity to decorate their own tiny green Christmas trees. Happy smiles on the faces of the young shoppers and delighted excitement from their holiday shopping experience were sure signs of the success of this annual event. Along the corridors from the school entrance to the “secret shopping” area, over 30 vendors displayed their wares so parents could also do some shopping. Boutique

items, high-end jewelry items, personal care items, makeup, knitted scarves, hats, and towels, jams and jellies, cooking products, specialty toys, and cutlery were some of the products available for purchase. New this year was a custom Colts Neck tree ornament. A bake sale of delicious snacks was also held to benefit the Colts Neck Cedar Drive Band trip to Hershey Park, Penn. A special book Fair in conjunction with the Holiday Shopping event was held in the library. It offered treasured classics as well as new and exciting books that made gift choices easy for parents. Once again, Frosty’s Holiday Shopping and Bazaar event was a tremendous hit with both the young shoppers and their parents.

OPERATION PROVIDE COMFORT – UNION BEACH
Brings Christmas Cheer to Residents for the 2013 Holiday Season
T
he call for a Merry Christmas came and Operation Provide Comfort (OPC) Union Beach responded with a team effort from members of the Colts Neck community and the Colts Neck Business Association. At the last OPC meeting, it was agreed that they would assist those in need with free Christmas Trees, and as usual their team took it to the next level. “A tree is great, but what about stands and decorations?” said Glen Dalakian. Others chimed in and the group’s founder Jim Sfayer stated with determination, “We can help bring Christmas cheer to many in the community as they continue the restorations.” With that the team took action. Jim Butler, a Union Beach resident, who lost his home in Superstorm Sandy, began the planning to receive the trees and distribute them to those in need. Calls were made and Ed Brock of Brock Farms in Colts Neck offered to donate fresh cut trees grown in town. Tom Orgo, owner of Slope Brook Farm, brought in his team and trucks to cut and transport the trees. OPC tapped into the funds they have raised and purchased (at
wholesale) - 99 tree stands! But why stop at trees and stands? The Colts Neck Reformed Church also jumped in by donating dozens of handmade ornaments from their “New Destinies 4 Kidz” annual Christmas Party. The group included 15 campers and their one-on-one teen counselors - Rev. Scott Brown of the Colts Neck Reformed Church and Pastor Chris Durkin of Colts Neck Community Church and Glen J. Dalakian, of the OPC. Christmas ornaments were received for the children of Union Beach that were made by the campers during the party. Retired NY Giant Keith Elias and a group of volunteers from the “Building on the Rock Community Church” in Manchester assisted with the activities and program. The Colts Neck Business Association was also contacted and put the word out to members to bring ornaments for our Union Beach neighbors. Over 200 Christmas tree decorations were collected and also delivered to Union Beach. In a few short hours on a cold Saturday morning - 75 trees, 99 stands and hundreds of ornaments were picked up by the residents of Union Beach. Kudos for this outstanding

team effort, that came together almost overnight to meet the needs of so many this past holiday season. OPC Union Beach has many plans for the New Year as there are still almost 400 families not yet back in their homes. Your support and ideas are welcome as they continue to develop plans and raise funds to fill the gaps left since the storms. Operation Provide Comfort was formed by concerned citizens of Colts Neck, NJ. It is a totally volunteer organization and 100% all funds raised go directly to the people who need it most. For more information visit their website - www.OPCUnionBeach.org or find them on Facebook. They continue to endeavor to see all of their Union Beach neighbors restored from the damage done by Sandy in 2013. Join them as a volunteer; make a financial contribution; or step-up with needed resources. All are welcome to participate in this on-going effort. Donations can also be made payable to CNCC (Memo: Union Beach) and mailed to CNCC, 25 Merchants Way, Colts Neck, NJ 07722 or call 732.462.2779.

Advanced cardiac care made possible with a gift from the heart. We continue to strengthen our community with extraordinary medical care. Recently, Bayshore was designated as an Accredited Chest Pain Center, capable of the high level of care proven to help patients survive a heart attack. In fact, Bayshore and the other Meridian Health Hospitals are the only system in New Jersey to have achieved this. And with the construction of two, new, state-of-the-art cardiovascular cath labs we will significantly expand our ability to perform life-saving procedures such as emergency angioplasty. These labs, along with many other new facilities and programs, have been made possible through the financial contributions of people right here in the area. People who share Bayshore’s commitment to build on what we have already accomplished and improve care for everyone we serve. ewcomers and Neighbors Club of Colts Neck and Holmdel held their annual holiday luncheon on December 5 at the beautiful McLoone’s Pier House in Long Branch. Members and guests enjoyed a cocktail hour with passed hors d’oeuvres and a delicious buffet lunch. The highlight of the luncheon was the singing, dancing and hysterically funny comedic performance of Bette Midler (actually, her look-alike). It was a great way to “kick off” the holiday season! A cocktail party was held on December 14 and the Gourmet Lunch group came together to celebrate the holidays with a brunch on December 19.

Upcoming for the Newcomers and Neighbors Club in 2014 will be the annual Treasure Auction on January 9 at the Conover Road Firehouse #2 at 9:30 a.m. Members and guests may bring gently used items for the event. In their continued efforts to help within the community, the Club asked that members bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Monmouth and Ocean County Food Bank. Through the combined efforts of Chairman Craig Belz, Vice President of Programs Elena Delaney and Vice President of Fundraising Rosemarie Veglak, Winter Wonderland was a huge success. Beautiful holiday songs were performed live by the Lincroft School Chorus under the direction of Mr. Jupinka. Throughout the event, Ron Konefal served as DJ and continuously played cheerful songs of the season. The Fifth Grade Event Smencil Sale and several games were run by Kelly Oliviera and Christine Sanpietro for the fifth grade class. Meg Connolly
provided the traveling Tree of Wishes which held tags listing specific items for local families still in need after Superstorm Sandy. Mr. Belz noted his request for baked goods to be served at this event was overwhelming. Following his suggestion to offer s’mores as a snack, donations of marshmallows, graham crackers and Hershey bars came in almost immediately. Toasting the marshmallows over the open fire pit nearby was fun for children as well as adults. Hot pretzels and hot chocolate completed the list of musthave wintery snacks. The presence of Santa Claus added a special touch. “It has been great to see the children and to enjoy the singing from the choir,” said Santa. PTA President Debbie Piperno said,

“We received great support from the Lincroft School staff and many teachers came out to enjoy this event.” With at least 100 people attending throughout the day, she noted, “This year’s event exceeded our expectations!” Chairman Belz and the PTA appreciated all the volunteers who helped to make this event such a tremendous success. A special thanks to the residents who shopped for their wreaths, trees, and poinsettias during the event and to Colonial Nursery for their generous donation of 15 percent of all the purchases made on this day. Dan Coneeny was pleased with the event. “The weather was excellent and the event went very well,” he shared. Please visit www.lincroftpta.org for information on future events.

he hit show “Dance Moms” follows a group of young dancers on their road to stardom with their doting moms and their dance director, Abby Lee Miller. Soon to begin its fourth season on the Lifetime channel, Abby Lee Miller recently went on a national scouting tour in search of elite young dancers. Her final stop was on Saturday, Novemeber 23 at the New Yorker Hotel in New York City. This is where eight members of the L.A. Dance Center of the Arts Dance Company auditioned with 2,000 other dancers for the chance to be on Dance Moms or Abby Lee Miller’s second Lifetime show Ultimate Dance Competition. After progressing through many rounds of auditions, Isabella LoSordo was named only one of 20 finalists from the New York City auditions. Although a decision regarding whether or not Isabella will continue in the audition process has yet to be made, L.A. Dance is so proud of Isabella. L.A. Dance’s brush with fame continued on Sunday, November 24, when 11 dancers attended the Sheer Talent Dance Competition in the Bronx, New York. Abby Miller and the dancers from Dance Moms participated in the competition and the camera’s caught the action for a season 4 episode. The trios of Kylie, Joelle and Sarah and Camryn, Natasha and Jenna, as well as the duo of Francesca and Isabella placed first overall in their respective categories. Claire placed second overall for her solo and Alyssa placed fourth overall for her solo in the preteen category. Alyssa was very excited since she placed higher than one of the Dance Moms dancers - Paige. And since both the audition and competition were filmed, there is a good chance that the L.A. Dance stars may soon become TV stars!

Aristocrat Pear Trees Planted on South Holland Road in Holmdel Have you noticed that new pear trees have been planted on South Holland Road in Holmdel? The approximately 70 pear trees were originally planted on that road just north of the Parkway at the time the road was built through Holmdel some 50 years ago. Since that time the trees have grown up and into the power lines on one side. The electric company trimming has distorted the natural shape of the trees. Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy and winter storms have totally ruined some of the trees and broken significant portions of the branches of others. About five years ago, the Shade Tree Committee removed 15 of the most deformed and hazardous trees and replaced them. Those new pear trees have all survived. However after Sandy, FEMA removed 10 more of the old trees, something had to be done. In early 2013 Friends of Holmdel Open Space (FOHOS) received a sizeable donation from a Holmdel family. It was agreed that the funds could be used for a tree remediation project on South Holland. Janet Jackel, President of FOHOS, and its Board conferred with the Holmdel Shade Tree Committee (STC), and it was agreed that FOHOS would pay the costs for the trees work and Jenni Blumenthal of the STC and its members would manage the work. In November, Gary LoVallo and his crew from Chestnut Arboricultural and Forestry Services in Old Bridge arrived at the site. In two days they used their bucket trucks and expertise to prune the remaining large trees and removed five more of the old ones that were beyond help. Now the old trees no longer hang so far into the street and are much stronger and balanced. A week later Gary returned and planted 15 new Aristocrat variety Bradford pear trees. The Aristocrat variety is much stronger than the older trees and is much less likely to break up in storms and will be easier to prune to an attractive shape with no ugly topping. They were also mulched and watered. Since then Mother Nature fortunately has been supplying enough water until spring.

Colts Neck Sisters Honored by Ashley Lauren Foundation Mary Larkin and Carol Stillwell will be honored at the 3rd Annual Butterfly Ball in 2014. STORY KAITLYN ANNESS PHOTO CREDIT RICHARD STEIGER Mary Ann Larkin and Carol Stillwell are being honored at the 3rd Annual Butterfly Ball in 2014.
Stillwell, President of Stillwell-Hansen, is the only authorized sales and service representative in Northern New Jersey for the Liebert Corporation. Both Stillwell and Larkin are being honored by the Ashley Lauren Foundation for the fundraising and volunteer efforts. “For Mary Ann and I, we are humbled. There are so many people that give so much of their time. For us, the thing we are most proud of is that hopefully through being honored we will be able to reach out to the community of people we know that will support this event, and be able to raise the resources and funds that are necessary to help these families.” Stillwell said both she and Larkin have embraced the philosophy of the Ashley Lauren Foundation, helping families impacted by cancer in any way possible. The Ashley Lauren Foundation is an independent New Jersey foundation, which works hands on with each family in need. The goal of the foundation is to ease the journey when pediatric cancer is diagnosed by providing direct financial and material assistance. “Sometimes there are private needs that are shared, and we may donate or reach out to our friends and talk to them about the needs of the foundation,” Stillwell said.
C
arol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin of Colts Neck are involved with several local charities, but Stillwell said it’s non-profits which rally around cancer patients that hit close to home. Her sister, Mary Ann Larkin, is recovering from stage 4-colon cancer. “We see first hand how cancer effects not just the patient but the families,” Stillwell said. The philanthropic pair is being honored at the Third Annual Butterfly Ball, to benefit the Ashley Lauren Foundation (ALF). The foundation provides “hope and help to children in New Jersey with cancer through financial, material, and emotional support,” according to its website. “It really is wonderful to see how their spirits are lifted. I think for one thing, their families don’t walk alone. They believe that someone is extending their hand.”

ALF was founded by Monica Vermeulen, whose daughter Ashley was diagnosed with kidney cancer at the age of 3. After losing one kidney and battling through chemotherapy, Ashley is now living free of cancer and plays an active role in the Ashley Lauren Foundation. The foundation annually holds a Christmas party for young patients, as well as a charity-driven Barn Tour in Colts Neck. But its largest event is the Butterfly Gala, which will be held on Feb. ruary 22 in Long Branch this year. “I would encourage everyone within our community to understand that no matter how small the gift, whatever that gift is has so much meaning,” Stillwell said. “I hope that we lead by example. There’s so much the people of The Ashley Lauren Foundation can benefit from.” Tickets for the formal gala at Ocean Place Resort and Spa are $200 per person, including dinner and dancing as well as live and silent auctions. olmdel Fire and Rescue Company #2 held their first Steak and Bake fundraiser on December 6 at the North Centerville Firehouse. The all-you-can-eat steak, beer, wine and soda event welcomed over 200 people for a great night of socializing and fun. A prize was offered for the tackiest Christmas sweater worn by a guest. Although not everyone wore a “tacky” sweater, those who did were impressive. Lights flashed, bows and tinsel were thrown randomly on sweaters, and there was even a costumed penguin in the midst. Chairman Matt Menosky worked with Eric Hernandez and John Boyle, Jr. to plan the evening in order to raise muchneeded funds for Holmdel Fire and Rescue Company#2. The event was also a drive for new or used musical instruments that would benefit Precision Tuned to Musically Inspire Children, which is a non-profit organization providing instruments and music lessons to local families who need a little assistance. John Albino, owner of Absolute Music Studio in Hazlet and Pam Hansen, office manager at the studio started the organization two years ago. They also work with a group of 16 children from the studio who sing contemporary songs at community events. The chorus performed several holiday songs during the Steak and Bake fundraiser. John Albino later performed with his band The Crossing, where he sang vocals and played guitar along with Dave and Stephanie DiPietro who sang; Glenn Kahn on keyboard; Rocco DiGregorio on percussion; and Andy Herschman on drums. Music was also provided by Everett Entertainment, which was started by Brian McGraw and Demetri Papasavas who are both firefighters in Company #2.

I’m IMPORTANT
I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”
The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

Benefit for Bella Colts Neck resident, Bella McGovern, suffers from Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare, multisystem genetic disorder.
C
STORY VICKY VALET
harming, playful and with a sense of humor to boot, Colts Neck resident Bella McGovern had just begun her life’s journey when, at 2-years-old, elements of her behavior began to change. Occasional body twitches gradually became the norm, as did her eyelids quickly fluttering and her head suddenly dropping limply to her chest. Recognizing this as atypical for her young daughter, Bethany Link rushed her to the family’s pediatrician, who, despite believing Bella to be healthy, recommended an EEG for the sake of assurance. The results that followed shocked everyone.
Unbeknownst to all those who knew her, Bella had been experiencing constant seizures and seizure activity, and was diagnosed with epilepsy. This diagnosis, however, would soon be proved inconclusive. Following what should have been a routine MRI, a local neurologist discovered numerous tumors on her brain. “We were brought into a [hospital] room with a priest. I will never forget that day as long as I live,” said her mother. “They had seen the tumors on her brain…we both dropped to our knees.” After several visits to the NYU Langone Medical Center for appointments with Dr. Orrin Devinsky, the director of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, as well as numerous CAT scans, EEGs, EKGs, MRIs and spinal taps, a definitive diagnosis was finally reached: Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare, multi-system genetic disorder which, in the case of Bella, had caused tumor growth on her brain and heart, white patches to appear on her skin and developmental delays. Although Bella’s family was relieved to finally possess the answers to the questions they had been asking for six months, the

devastating reality of TSC set in quickly. “It was hard for the doctors to give us any type of prognosis because the disease varies so much depending on the patient. We were basically told that as long as they could control the seizures, her chances of a normal life were better,” said Link. Numerous medications later, however, doctors were still unable to control Bella’s seizures. Even a last-resort traumatic brain surgery failed to yield a decrease in seizure activity, and instead resulted in severe brain damages. “TSC has ruined our lives,” said Link. “This is a horrible, debilitating disease that has robbed my poor baby of her childhood.” Now 10-years-old, Bella cannot read or write, and is only capable of communicating in short phrases. Her personality is negatively affected by her medications, which cause her to experience lethargy one day and hyperactivity the next. Her limited attention span has prevented her from learning at the pace of her peers, as does her lack of ability to retain information for more than a few hours. Even more devastating, though, is the frequency of her seizures, which now occur daily. Due to the vast number of injuries she’s sustained from falling during her seizures, Bella must constantly be accompanied and wears a helmet to protect her face and head. Nightly seizures prevent her from having her own room, as she must sleep alongside her mother, who administers medication throughout the night and ensures she does not suffocate. Despite all of the darkness TSC has brought upon Bella, her mother and her two siblings, Tate and Willow, there is a bright light—the Harbor School in Eatontown, a NJ Department of Edu-

DIVORCE TALK
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.
ALIMONY REFORM- UPDATED
S
everal months ago I wrote about permanent alimony and how that concept, entrenched in New Jersey law for well over a hundred years, might change if proposed legislation became law. Since then, the debate has been heating up. Anti-alimony groups have been lobbying for passage of a bill that would abolish permanent alimony (in most cases), create a formula for determining the amount and duration of alimony payments, and provide for an automatic end to alimony when certain events occur (such as when the payor reaches the age at which he/ she qualifies for full Social Security benefits). There is a certain appeal to the predictability that a formula may provide. Planning for the future, by both the payor and the payee, would Peter C. Paras is a shareholder be easier in most cases. They each know how in the Family Law Firm of much the alimony payments would be and Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. when they would end. A case-by-case, fact sensitive analysis, with the shades of gray and For more information please other vagaries that come with it, would be a see the firm’s website at www. thing of the past. par-law.com. The information Several attorney groups are advocating for in this article is not intended a more measured approach, acknowledging as legal advice. For legal that some alimony reform is needed. These advice you should consult groups prefer legislation that would create your attorney. a commission to study the issue and to make impartial recommendations for reform legislation that is based more on empirical data
and less on anecdotal evidence and emotion. Ironically, the pending reform bill might not always be fair to the groups that are advocating its passage most strenuously. For example, a payor’s alimony obligation would become a percentage of his/her income. What if that income is aberrationally high in the year in which the award is made and not at all reflective of the marital lifestyle during most of the marriage? The converse could also unfairly prejudice a payee. If the goal is to achieve true reform, that goal is not achieved if new laws simply exchange one set of problems for another, particularly if the new set of problems could have been foreseen and avoided had the right amount of time been taken and the proper homework done. There are nightmarish stories of alimony payors going deeper and deeper into debt to meet their obligations, of postponing retirement well beyond standard retirement age and of having to work two jobs while the payee works none. However, there are just as many nightmares affecting payees who were and are virtually totally dependent on alimony despite their best efforts at economic independence. Before rushing into legislation that may simply trade one set of problems for another, it might be better to do this right than to do it fast.

Oak Hill Academy Celebrates Diversity with Heritage Day On November 22, 2013, the fourth graders at Oak Hill Academy in Middletown celebrated family heritage with each other during the annual Heritage Day. Heritage Day at Oak Hill Academy is just one example of how our community highlights the diversity of families. It arrives at an extra special time as the school is in the midst of its self-study for the Middlestates Association of Colleges and Schools reaccredidation process in the upcoming year. It is just one of many ways OHA shows its cultural diversity throughout its rich curriculum.
Each student looks forward to this day to invite family members to celebrate each other’s heritage. Students make and decorate a paper doll in traditional garb from one country of their ancestors. They also write a speech about a memorable family tradition, which range from holiday get-togethers to summer traditions to family reunions across the globe. During the celebration the students share them with their classmates and their special guests. Students are encouraged to wear a traditional outfit from their ancestor’s homeland if they wish.
The exciting day comes to a very colorful and tasty conclusion as each student brings in a traditional dish from his or her family. With dishes from appetizers to main dishes to desserts, there is a smörgåsbord of cuisine for all to enjoy from all parts of the world. Thank you to teachers Mrs. Crouse, Mrs. Roehrig, Mrs. Tolleth, fourth grade homeroom parents and all of the fourth graders and their families for enriching all of their lives through this special celebration.

Twenty artists, including new exhibitors, displayed a variety of media including paintings, pottery, sculpture, wood work and photography. The artists give generously of their time and donate 20 percent of sales to the library group. Opening night was a time to meet the artists who were on hand to discuss their work. The show also provided an opportunity to surprise Kelly Taylor, outgoing president of the FOL, with a reception where she was presented with a “thank you” brick for the library walkway. The FOL is grateful for the work of the co-chairs, the artists, volunteers, and patrons. Local Seniors Enjoy L.A. Dance Center Performance
O
n November 20, 2013, members of the L.A. Dance Center of the Arts Dance Company performed for a group of senior citizens at the Luftman Towers Senior Citizen Community. Members of the Rhinestones and Lil’ Diamonds companies performed their dynamic tap, jazz and hip hop routines. The trio of Kylie, Joelle and Sarah danced to “Another Cha Cha” and Claire and Alyssa wowed the crowd with their solo performances.
When the performance ended, for the Thanksgiving holiday, the dancers had “autographed” a coloring of a Thanksgiving turkey and gave them to the audience members as a special “thank you” for inviting L.A. Dance to Luftman Towers. The seniors said they had a wonderful time enjoying the dances, music and beautiful costumes.
Saint Leo the Great School Hosted Breakfast with Santa for Over 200 Kids! Saint Leo the Great School kicked off this year’s Christmas season on December 8 with some holiday cheer by hosting Breakfast with Santa for over 200 children. This event is a yearly tradition and is treasured by all parents and children that are part of the Saint Leo the Great community. The day was nothing short of a Christmas wonderland for the children. The children and their parents cherish the keepsake ornaments and crafts made at this event year after year as they grow older, and the memories are kept forever. Mrs. Tracey Carandang and Mrs. Maureen Faletti headed this year’s

Maureen and I are fortunate to work with such great people. Our sincerest thanks go out to every single one of them.” Indeed the event was just another remarkable success at Saint Leo the Great School, where parents and children are very fortunate to have such admirable dedication among their peers.

O
n November 17, 2013, it was a time to celebrate for the members of the Colts Neck Reformed Church. It was on this day that the church wrapped up their fall clothing drive. During October and November members of the church sorted through their closets and dressers and toted bags of their gently used clothing, coats, shoes, toys, and blankets to church. Once the clothing was collected by the church members, it was then donated to the Family Resource Association (FRA) of Shrewsbury. FRA is a non-profit organization, which provides disabled children and adults with home-based services to meet their special needs. The donated clothing will be is resold by FRA and the profits will be used to support programs such as: Early Intervention Services, Family Support Groups, Parents Workshops, Therapeutic Recreation Programs, and Computer Assistive Technology. FRA Clothing Drive Coordinator JoEllen Turnea expressed her gratitude to the congregation as the drive came to close, “We wish to extend our heart-felt thanks to the members of the Reformed Church of Colts Neck, who have generously contributed clothing, coats and shoes and made this drive event a huge success.” Recently installed associate minister Jeff Knol said, “We were happy to help. A member from our congregation brought this idea to my office and it seemed like a perfect project. FRA was in need of clothing and our church is always looking for ways to help the broader community.” The church and FRA plan to coordinate future drives. Those who are interested in learning more about FRA and its services can visit frainc.org or call 732.747.5310.

Mark your calendars for the 3rd annual Home and Business Trade Show, which will highlight area businesses, is now open for registration. The show will take place on April 6, 2014 at the Encore Event Center in Freehold, NJ. Previous shows were held at Bella Vista Country Club with great success, however, due to the increase in participating exhibitors and public attendance last year, a larger venue has been selected to accommodate additional exhibitors and attendees. A massive advertising campaign is underway to promote this event, which will include Cablevision commercials, billboards, six magazines and a mailing list of over 2000 businesses. Bella Vista Country Club is organizing and managing the Expo and Ray Catena Lexus of Monmouth is co-sponsoring a two-year lease of a 2014 Lexus, which will be part of a free raffle available to all attendees that day on behalf of the participating exhibitors. In addition, a 50” HDTV sponsored by Home Entertainment Systems, a country club membership to Bella Vista Country Club will be raffled off that day. All attendees will receive a list of exhibitors and the attendees will be required to visit at least 10 exhibitors to be eligible to enter the raffle for the FREE 2014 Lexus IS250, the 50” HDTV, and the country club membership. Peter Grandich, author of Confessions of a Wall Street Whiz Kid, will provide several high profile sports figures at the expo to help drive public participation. New Chapel of the Saints Unveiled at St. Leo the Great In November 2013, Saint Leo the Great Church unveiled its newly renovated Chapel of the Saints. The Chapel of the Saints is a tranquil place where people can go to reflect, light candles and pray. The entrance was redesigned by access granted from inside the Church rather than its original entrance from the corridor. This gives the Church and Chapel a more united and complete feel. The name Chapel of the Saints was given as a dedication to all Saints. This is emphasized by the beautiful pictures and sculptures of Saints displayed throughout the Chapel. Pastor John Folchetti said, “As our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI stated on many an occasion, including his installation as Pope, ‘The Saints are our friends and intercessors before Almighty God.’”

Colts Neck resident Jim Schatzle of Team Life Inc. is on a mission to spread the idea of good citizenship. Schatzle, former Colts Neck Mayor and current Committeeman, told Tiger Scout Pack 90 a good citizen is “a person who follows the rules of the town they are in and tries their best to help others.” Schatzle helped Pack 90 obtain their Citizenship Belt Loop by introducing the lifesaving techniques of the Powerheard AED G 3, a fully automatic defibrillator. Schatzle, also an EMS volunteer, showed the boys how the device talks and brings the user through lifesaving steps. The devices are seen in Colts Neck schools, and scout Lucas Alber knew exactly where Conover Road Primary School’s device was located. The troop also learned CPR, the Heimlich maneuver and the steps to responding in emergencies. “By being involved in the Boy Scouts, you are already on a great path to being good citizens,” Schatzle said. Team Life Inc. is an emergency health training company based in Colts Neck, which offers products and lifesaving expertise, including training classes.

VISION
On December 16, talented Ranney junior Jacquie Lee ’15 of Colts Neck, competed for the last time on the stage of “The Voice.” As NBC’s hit singing show, viewers tuned in nationwide to watch Jacquie and the two other finalists (Tessanne Chin and Will Champlin) compete for the Season 5 title. Ranney School hosted a viewing party for their community and the media, to enhance the excitement of this big event, there were camera crew members from WNBC television and the radio station 1010 Wins. To open the night on a high note, all four celebrity coaches (Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton) sang a version of Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me” with the original band members. After their energetic performance, it was time for each finalist to sing the song that earned them a spot on the show—their blind audition song. Viewers were able to reminisce to late September and see how far each contestant, especially Jacquie, had come. Up first was Tessanne singing “Try” by Pink. Next was Will who sang “Not Over You” by Gavin DeGraw. Last and certainly not least was our very own Jacquie with “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse. As the song that made two coaches turn their chairs for Jacquie, Coach Christina said, “I love this girl so much! I really get so much joy watching you do what you do! You make me smile, and you make me enjoy everything you do, and killing it. There’s something so special inside of you! We just have a good time together. I’m so proud of you. This girl is a gem! She is going to go so many places!” Next up were duets performed by each contestant and his/ her coach. Jacquie got on stage with Christina to take the audience’s breath away - the two harmonized to “We Remain” from the hit movie “The Hunger Games.” With this, viewers were able to see the bond the two have made over the course of the show and the friendship that will remain. And to close the night was Christina’s “little girl, big voice” contestant and Ranney’s star, Jacquie. Before she sang, Coach Christina exclaimed about Jacquie, “I adore her. She’s like my little sister.” As Christina’s first-ever contestant to get to the final 3, Jacquie claimed, “I’m so proud to be the one.” Jacquie sang “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Holliday, later sung by Jennifer Hudson in “Dreamgirls.” Jacquie used her raw talent and polished vocal skills to blow the audience, coaches and viewers away. Her coach excitedly stated, “Wow! Jacquie! Oh my God! I am completely speechless. The amount of talent you have in that little 16-year-old body is just amazing! You have what it takes, and I want to see you get to that next level. You proved it to yourself and the rest of the world that Jacquie Lee is a force to be reckoned with.” Blake Shelton added, “To see your evolution on this show, that was amazing. Congratulations.” On December 17, 2013, Jacquie took silver on The Voice!

Beacon of Hope
Brings Business & Community Together The Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce became more than a local business organization after Hurricane Sandy. STORY KAITLYN ANNESS
Former Chamber President Cliff Moore organizes volunteers at the 2012 Beacon of Hope relief center, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy (Photo courtesy of Beacon of Hope).
F
or 54 years, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce has represented a large book of businesses in the Bayshore area, putting their seal on the doors of storefronts in ten towns. But after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, that seal became more than a logo. It became a way for chamber businesses to reach out and help the community like never before. Then Chamber President, Hazlet business owner Cliff Moore saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between business and community and called on his chamber contacts for help. “It was chamber business owners that were offering services, volunteering their time,” Moore said. “People give me most of the credit, but it wasn’t me, it was the volunteers.” Within 24 hours of what began as a simple idea, Moore, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce, the RAINE Foundation and St. Benedicts Church opened what the Red Cross called the largest relief center in the state. The backdrop was the empty Foodtown building, which was filled with 38 tractor-trailers worth of donations. From there, the Beacon of Hope was formed. “It all happened because of social media,” Moore said. “Trucks were com-

ing from across the country, with no landing point, and then they would hear about us.” In 22 days, the impromptu center fed 100,000 people with one million pounds of food and 82,000 volunteer hours. “It was because of our contacts that we were able to put it together so quickly,” Moore said. “It was a partnership, people rose to the occasion.” Terence Biggs, Chamber Executive Director, said Sandy shifted gears for the chamber, making it a community organization rather than just a resource for businesses. “The next challenge we get, a lot of people will remember that and call us,” Biggs said. “The whole incident created a new role for us to serve.” Now, the chamber is becoming a bridge between what the community needs and what businesses need, because the two-function hand-in-hand. The chamber offers education, networking and marketing tools to its members. Social media is playing a bigger part in the chamber’s role, according to Biggs, who said most of the Bayshore businesses are owner-operated and run by second and third family generations. “The smaller

businesses have gotten so comfortable with the tools they already use,” Biggs said. “Some of the tools just aren’t effective anymore.” Through weekly networking breakfasts and partnering with area chambers, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce offers members a chance to learn from others and become the face associated with the name of their businesses. “We want to give members the opportunity to meet people from other chambers, that’s a benefit,” Chamber President Sebastian Ferrantell said. “We’re a business organization that is here to try to promote businesses in the footprint.” To continue its bridge between community and business, the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce is in the process of creating its own 501(c)(3) organization to make it easier to donate to local charities and directly to people in need. “We need to prove value. Our members are involved in the community, getting exposure and learning different skillsets,” Ferrantell said. “We’re the standard.”

Skiing, Snowboarding and Tubing Throughout the Northeast STORY KAITLIN SEVERINI
C
entral New Jersey may have seen a few inches of snow so far, but if you’re looking to ski, board or tube for the day or even over an extended weekend, there are options aplenty to fulfill all your winter wonderland activity needs, whether you’re going with family, friends, as a couple or solo.
GETTING AWAY FOR THE DAY If you’re interested in playing in the snow for a few hours without the added cost of springing for lodging, ski resorts located in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania get you on the slopes fast: in about two hours! Mountain Creek, conveniently located in Vernon, New Jersey, hosts four peaks, night skiing and the highest peak in the region at 1,040 feet. Having merged with Crystal Springs Resort in 2010, the combined resorts offer snowboarding and tubing in addition to skiing, golf courses, spas, fine dining, a wine cellar, mountain biking and hiking. Check out winter.mountaincreek.com for mountain reports, trail maps and more. The Poconos, of course, with well-known resorts such as Camelback, Big Boulder, Blue Mountain and Jack Frost, are located in nearby Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and are packed with resorts able to fulfill all your skiing, snowboarding and tubing needs, and satisfy even the non-skier: The area’s resorts boast a casino, a racetrack, fishing, spas and outdoor adventures. Pick the ski spot that suits you best by browsing the resorts at 800poconos.com.
MAKING AN OVERNIGHT ESCAPE When a day of fun just won’t do? Venture a little farther to Upstate New York and spend a night (or two) at Hunter Mountain, Thunder Ridge or Windham Mountain, nestled in Hunter, Patterson or Windham, respectively. Each resort offers a variety of activities and amenities, including skiing, snowboarding and tubing, lodging, dining and shops, and other outdoor adventures and events. Visit each resorts’ website for conditions, lodging and more information: Hunter Mountain at huntermtn.com; Thunder Ridge at thunderridgeski.com/ and Windham Mountain at windhammountain.com.
