Advanced cardiac care made possible with a gift from the heart. We continue to strengthen our community with extraordinary medical care. Recently, Bayshore was designated as an Accredited Chest Pain Center, capable of the high level of care proven to help patients survive a heart attack. In fact, Bayshore and the other Meridian Health Hospitals are the only system in New Jersey to have achieved this. And with the construction of two, new, state-of-the-art cardiovascular cath labs we will significantly expand our ability to perform life-saving procedures such as emergency angioplasty. These labs, along with many other new facilities and programs, have been made possible through the financial contributions of people right here in the area. People who share Bayshore’s commitment to build on what we have already accomplished and improve care for everyone we serve. e were warned about this winter being a rough one, but who would have thought we would see so much snow, record breaking temps, and on top of everything - a polar vortex. To imagine we may have a few more weeks of this makes me want to take an impromptu trip down south to warm my bones, but then again, spring is around the corner, and we only have to endure this for a little longer. February is definitely a more eventful month then January, all month we are celebrating Black History, as well as Presidents Day, oh, and of course that day for showing that special somebody how much they mean to you, a celebration of the heart – Valentine’s Day.

February also happens to be American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, for both men and women, people of all ages and backgrounds can get the condition. If you don’t know me personally, this topic is close to my ‘heart’, as my father suffered from heart disease, but was a lucky man when he received a heart transplant a couple years back. I could probably tell you everything there is to know about the heart, being in and out of hospitals with my father for so long, I was able to learn and become more aware by chatting with the nurses and doctors on the cardiac floors – and believe me, there were many hospitals.

But understanding heart conditions isn’t an easy task - there are lots of different types and knowing how the heart works is more helpful when trying to learn about these conditions. Debbie Noce, Social Butterfly event planner in Monmouth County.
to Butterfly
How Debbie Noce became Monmouth County’s Social Butterfly STORY KAITLYN ANNESS Dr. Robi Ludwig, CNN and Today Show Contributor, and Social Butterfly Debbie Noce.
D
ebbie Noce wasn’t always the outgoing, bubbly person she is today. But when a divorce forced Noce out of her shell and into the world of being social, Noce left the retail world and realized she had a knack for event planning. “My background was retail, I had three clothing stores out of college. After you go through a divorce, things change. I used to be very shy and quiet. Now, I could be in the city, and people say, ‘There she is, Social Butterfly.’” Known throughout the state as The Social Butterfly, Noce has made a name for herself in both the event planning and music industries. “I decided I needed to start a whole new circle of friends, and I didn’t want to always be in a bar. I wanted to put together events for people who were divorced and single who had nothing to do,” Noce said. “The original plan was more or less creating parties and events for all these single people, which snowballed into private affairs and nonprofit events.” Now, Noce has a slew of experience under her belt, enabling her to offer clients the whole package from social networking to corporate affairs. Recently, Noce began planning second weddings, a fitting service to offer considering how Social Butterfly began. “I will not ever do a first time bride. I am booking second weddings, where they know what they want, it’s smaller.”

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
Most of all, Noce loves bringing people together through her events, and through the music she loves. “There were a lot of friendships formed through the connections of Social Butterfly,” she said. Noce represents local musician Scott Elk, an Ocean Township resident who often plays The Wine Loft in Pier Village, a venue Noce books live music for regularly. “That has become a whole other part of the business,” Noce said. “I have met so many contacts in the music industry, local talent, and I book several acts at certain venues. I love it. I love music.” But when it comes to charitable events, Noce is at the top of her industry. In the last two years, Noce has planned events that raised more than $20,000 for Jon Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchen. Social Butterfly has worked with local charities, such as The Ashley Lauren Foundation, to national organizations like the American Cancer Society. Noce said she’s selective, looking for charities which really need the help and benefit deserving people and causes. Living up to her company’s name, the Social Butterfly has flown from event to event, planning intimate gatherings and large parties for people to meet one another and enjoy the atmosphere. “Wherever I go, I just talk to people. I try to bring people together who have nothing to do.” PHOTOS COURTESY OF LISA MARIE KOCH & MTC PHOTOGRAPHY

The Liquid State Embracing the Juicing Craze and All Its Benefits
F
rom greens, to fruits and everything in between, the key to health this year seems to be in liquid form. The juicing craze has been steadily climbing in recent years (Jack LaLanne would be proud), and if you’re not already on the bandwagon, making a habit of liquefying delicious fruits and vegetables could be daunting.
Patty Siciliano, owner of Yummy Good Juice Bar in Red Bank, said juicing is all about what you enjoy. “In my eyes, it’s whatever pleases you. It’s kind of like going to a buffet and deciding what you like the most,” she said. “I recommend any fruits and vegetables.”
According to Dr. Woodson Merrell, Chairmen of the Department of Integral Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center and author of The Detox Prescription, the benefit of juicing comes from cleansing your body. “It is essential to break the cycle of dependence on saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, and excess caffeine and alcohol,” Woodson said in his Huffington Post blog. If you’re not looking to partake in a three-day liquid diet to cleanse your body of toxins, easing slowly into the habit of juicing may be your best bet. Woodson said juices could reduce your appetite, rest your stomach, improve energy and rehydrate your body.

CLEANSES Yummy Good Juice Bar in Red Bank offers a six-juice cleanse, including melon and beet juices, which help rehydrate and rid your body of toxins. “It’s a standard six juices, but we also would tailor them if the customer needed it,” owner Patty Siciliano said.
JUICER The experts recommend any centrifugal juicer for home use. While cold press juicers are popular, they make a mess and tend to be harder to use.

n January 9, 2014, the Newcomers & Neighbors Club of Colts Neck and Holmdel held the annual “Treasure” auction of gently used items donated by the members of the club. Holmdel Helps Aids Neighbors in Need
D
uring the holiday season, the Holmdel Helps Committee placed a white mailbox in town hall to collect gift cards for our neighbors in Keansburg to help them during the holiday season. More than 55 gift cards totaling over $2,200 have been donated to date. Keansburg Councilman and Holmdel Police Officer Tom Foley delivered the cards to Keansburg Office of Emergency Management’s Ginger Rogan, who went through the list of Superstorm Sandy affected residents to disperse the gift cards. Efforts were made to combine the cards into $50 increments and they were given directly to Keansburg residents who suffered significant damage to their homes during Superstorm Sandy. The donations included cards to Home Depot, Lowes, Sears and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

A third Ranney robot, led by sophomore Vasilios Nicholas, and assisted by sophomore Zach Sullens (Holmdel) won an Amaze Award. “The Amaze Award is presented to a team that has built a competition robot that clearly demonstrates overall quality. A solid mechanical design along with demonstrated robot programming, robustness, strong performance and consistency are key attributes assessed for this award.” A total of six robots from Ranney School competed in the event, including those of our new ninth-grade teams. All told, about 24 of the 41 members of the Ranney Robotics Club were present in some capacity on January 11. There was a large contingent of students manning our concessions booth, including Avani Bhatnagar (Treasurer), Samantha Chiarello (Treasurer), Ava Papett (Secretary)i, Noah Goldstien, Daniel Blumenkratz, Kylie Medlin, Sabrina Park, Kiran Shah, Chip Johnson and parent Sunish Shah (father of robotics student Kiran Shah and husband of robotics advisor Chiara Shah). Colts Neck Cares, a dedicated group of residents whose mission is to help families in their town who are in dire need of support, hosted their first annual event on January 18 at Colts Neck Inn. The first recipient of their generosity and caring was Bella McGovern, a sweet ten-year-old who has Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). This genetic disorder causes tumors to form in many different organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin and lungs.

Abbey Feiler-Kober and her husband Thomas Kober of Colts Neck enjoyed the event for Bella McGovern, hosted by Colts Neck Cares.
T
wo Colts Neck residents Patricia Ronca and Virginia Marshall established Colts Neck Cares after learning about Bella’s condition and the toll it was taking on both her and her family. Bella’s mother Bethany Link is her full-time caregiver. “I have the greatest kids,” said Link, acknowledging her at-home support system of Bella’s older brother Tate and younger sister Willow. “Bella is just so beautiful and so wonderful,” she said proudly.
Over 100 guests attended the Benefit for Bella and enjoyed cocktails, delicious food, music by Courtney McManus and Mike McKernan, and gift basket raffles. A silent auction featured items that included exquisite jewelry, items to pamper oneself, and sports and music memorabilia, and much more. So many businesses and individuals donated to this event, noted Marshall. “Louis Roros of Sayrewoods Florist graciously did the floral arrangements on our tables,” she said. Carmella Caracappa Photography shared a slideshow she assembled of Bella and her family, as well as candid pictures of Bella. Midway through the event, Ronca addressed the guests thanking them for attending. “Bella McGovern is a beautiful, extremely strong person. We hope to make this a yearly event and to continue

to help Bella.” Bethany Link, Bella’s mother shared, “I want to thank everyone for coming tonight. It is so overwhelming to see how many care who don’t even know us and yet are so generous. It is unbelievable to me and my children that you have been with us every step of the way.” Ronca said, “We want to be there for Bella, who was the inspiration for Colts Neck Cares, and for others in need. There are many people in the community who need help, including older community members who need support.” Noted on the Colts Neck Cares website are ways to support the organization’s cause. It mentions that support can come in a variety of ways, such as monetary donations or providing house goods, services or a home cooked meal. The site stresses that Colts Neck Cares can only be met if everyone works together as a community. Helping to ease the burden of the day-to-day struggles through the help of generous donations and volunteer work is a great start. For more information regarding Colts Neck Cares, please contact Patricia Ronca through email at Pronca75@gmail.com. NORTH POINT POWER SYSTEMS
PROVIDES TOP QUALITY GENERATOR PRODUCTS & SERVICE STORY SUSAN MURPHY
N
orth Point Power Systems is an authorized KOHLER Dealer, and installs as well as maintains its generators. The company has been in Colts Neck for 14 years, said owner Michael Discenza. He noted that KOHLER has been making American-made generators since 1920. Whether you need a generator for your residence or business, North Point Power Systems suggests having a certified KOHLER Dealer install and maintain whichever generator you choose. There are several types available for the home, which can be seen on North Point’s website. They include a generator for renewable energy including solar power or other remote applications. An affordable, commercial-grade power generator for basic power needs will keep your lights on, refrigerator cold, and sump pump working. It will power most appliances in smaller homes or a few critical ones in larger homes. One of the most popular generators that comes in different styles and provides award-winning reliability and performance. It keeps appliances working, the heat or air-conditioning running, and your security system on. Another generator offers reliable power for large residential and small business needs. It has an industrial-grade engine to keep your home or business, from central air-conditioning to sump pump to personal computers, up and running. KOHLER also has commercial generators that are suitable for the smallest independent shop to the largest national chain, notes North Point’s website. From temporary solutions such as a towable generator for concerts and events to powerful installed unit that can even keep gas pumps running during an outage. North Point believes there is an affordable KOHLER system for you and they look forward to showing you how KOHLER will keep your business functioning despite any utility interruptions.
Important information to know before the power goes out is that your automatic transfer switch (ATS) monitors the electricity coming from the utility. It is working 24/7 to protect your home. When the power fails or drops below an acceptable level (brownout), the ATS signals the generator to start. In seconds, the ATS transfers your power from the utility to the generator. Your generator powers your home. Your generator then supplies your home with electricity until the utility power is restored. If you are thinking of purchasing a generator, North Point recommends choosing a local KOHLER Generator Dealer or distributor to install your generator. Their website offers a Sales and Service Locator to assist you. It is also a good idea to have an authorized KOHLER dealer perform an onsite analysis to determine which generator and transfer switch offer the best solution for your home. North Point Power Systems provides premier residential and commercial service and support, service contracts, and authorized factory warranties. Contact North Point Power Systems at 732.625.0200 for a FREE estimate. They are located at 21 Route 537 East in Colts Neck. They are authorized KOHLER dealers who serve New Jersey, including Monmouth and Ocean counties. Their service area extends to parts of New York, such as Staten Island and Brooklyn. Stated on their website, “As long-term residents of this area, we know first-hand how quickly life can change. A power outage, an electrical disturbance, even a crowd riot can plunge your home or workplace into darkness, but with KOHLER, the power stays on giving you peace of mind no matter what the situation.” Visit http://northpointpowersystems.com for further information.

DIVORCE TALK
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.
THE INTERNET- FRIEND OR FOE?
T
he internet has spawned many positive changes for modern living. Communication is easier and instantaneous. Email and social media have dramatically altered the way our society communicates. Telephone calls and interpersonal conversations make up a steadily decreasing percentage of human contact. People simply don’t talk to each other as much as they used to. They, more often, put what they have to say in writing. The good news is: there is a record of what was said. The bad news is: there is a record of what was said. Depending on what was said, who said it and to whom and the context in which it was said, in a divorce this can be a helpful tool or a stubborn blight. It is hard to fathom why people often commit Peter C. Paras is a shareholder damaging admissions or venomous tirades to in the Family Law Firm of writing. The recipient often receives a gift – Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. evidence that can make a point far more easily and emphatically than testimony from a saint. For more information please see the firm’s website at www. The speaker often creates damaging evidence that is difficult or impossible to overcome. par-law.com. The information Another thing that is so baffling about modern in this article is not intended communication is that people will often put in as legal advice. For legal writing things they would never say over the advice you should consult telephone or to a person’s face. The impersonal your attorney. nature of digital communication somehow
emboldens people, very often to their own detriment. It is wise to pause before making written statements, as you would if you were writing a letter or a speech. Don’t be so quick to hit the “send” button because once you do, there is no “unsend” button by which to retrieve an illadvised email or text. Social media has also changed modern life. It has created a desire in many people to share every (no matter how banal) detail of their lives. This can provide a goldmine of information in a divorce. Postings should always be judicious, but in the context of divorce, an even stronger filter should be used. It is amazing how many people use the internet in self-destructive ways. And, contrary to what most people think, deleting a post or an email or text message does not completely sanitize your cyberspace. There remains a permanent record somewhere deep in your hard drive that IT experts can retrieve. The internet is a wonderful modern invention. Like those other modern inventions, the automobile, modern medicine and dynamite, it should be used with caution.

Azarchi, a resident of Morganville, watched as media reports of the devastation sustained by the residents of Union Beach were broadcast over and over. As a result, Azarchi took it upon himself to find a way to help by calling the Union Beach Police. He promptly offered his assistance in whatever way they deemed appropriate. As a business owner, Azarchi is adept at logistical management and recognized the need to bring order out of the chaos. Azarchi met many of the people working at Borough Hall as they coordinated everything from central information gathering, coordinating and staging volunteer efforts and organizing supplies, hot meals, clothing and even portable bathrooms. Azarchi quickly noted the need for logistical efficiency to bring order to the distribution of the large volume of donated food and materials. Azarchi purchased a computer, and rented two new trail-
ers, and identical locks for all of the trailers making multiple keys unnecessary. He then did what many volunteers did; he went back to his everyday life. His story recently came to the attention of Operation Provide Comfort, whose leadership quickly thanked and recognized him for his efforts. More than one year after Hurricane Sandy hit, many Union Beach residents continue to find themselves scattered around and beyond New Jersey. They remain homeless because their residences have been ravaged and destroyed by a force of nature. Their plight has been exploited by government agencies, insurance companies, unscrupulous contractors, retailers, repair shops, and rental property owners, to name just a few. Yet many nameless volunteers have helped and have given of their time and talent doing what they could to help bring “order out of the chaos.” Steve Azarchi is one of those local volunteers, and his efforts are truly appreciated. The leader of Operation Provide Comfort is local Colts Neck resident Lt. Col. Jim Sfayer, USMC Ret. The Colts Neck Lions Club has taken a prominent role alongside the Colts Neck Community Church in helping Union Beach as part of this effort. The purpose of the effort is to develop a long-term relationship between Union Beach and Colts Neck that will endure long after the storm. Our approach is to leverage the resources of our town to help the residents of Union Beach who suffered the most devastation and to help collect and coordinate donations of money, physical goods and services to aid in the rebuilding effort. One hundred percent of all donations given to Operation Provide Comfort go directly to the residents of Union Beach. For more information on Operation Provide Comfort, please visit the Colts Neck Township website or Operation Provide Comfort’s Facebook page.

n January 12, 2014, Saint Leo the Great School hosted its third annual Polar Plunge. The Polar Bear Plunge is a yearly event that the Ancient Order of Hibernians runs, with proceeds benefitting the Catholic Schools in the local area. Saint Leo the Great plungers, along with their families, gathered at McLoone’s Pier Village in Long Branch. At 1:00 p.m., and with much awaited anticipation, participants plunged into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The excitement that the plungers and their families displayed throughout this event is a genuine expression of how committed the Saint Leo the Great Community is in supporting and promoting Catholic Education. Spring Traveling Along the East Coast STORY KAITLIN SEVERINI
Whether you fancy flowers, films or folks dressed up in Revolutionary War–era garb, springtime in New Jersey and nearby states offer a myriad of events and destinations for everyone. WASHINGTON, D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival: Nearly an entire month of Cherry Blossom events takes place every year in the nation’s capital to announce the arrival of spring. The opening ceremony takes place on March 22, 2014, and Family Days are on Saturdays and Sundays at the National Building Museum. The program also features kite, fireworks and Japanese street festivals, as well as a parade on April 12, 2014 that runs along Constitution Avenue. To start planning your weekend getaway, check out nationalcherryblossomfestival.org. The White House Easter Egg Roll: Every year more than 30,000 people visit the President’s house for the annual egg roll, and 2014’s roll will be held on April 1, 2014 (no joke). More than just a roll, however, the event is perfect for children, complete with games, stories, a visit from a certain bunny, as well as adults, with sports courts and cooking demos. See if you’re game for this year’s egg roll by visiting whitehouse.gov/eastereggroll.

Oak Hill Supports the 2013 Elks ‘Hoop Shoot’® With Some Fantastic Results!
Sixteen Oak Hill Academy students earned trophies at the Red Bank Elks Hoop Shoot Competition in December.
Left to right: Oak Hill swept the boys division of the District Elks Hoop Shoot competition with Michael Jordan, Stephen Braunstein, and Anthony DeJohn all capturing 1st place.
The 2013-2014 Red Bank Elks Lodge “Hoop Shoot”® was held on December 22, at the Salvation Army Gym in Red Bank. The hoop shoot is the Elks most visible and largest of the youth activities that they sponsor. Over 3 million boys and girls ages 8-13 will compete throughout the country through district, state, regional and ultimately the national finals in Springfield, Massachusetts. Winners get their name permanently enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Left to right, top row: Captain Matthew Zilinski, Annie Stattel and Marion Zilinski of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund. Left to right, bottom row: Brian Wiese, Reagan Schuerger (Old Navy Shirt), Elli Mae Eason, & Benjamin Scheufele.
The Hoop Shoot began in 1971 with boys from just 19 states involved. Within five years 750,000 boys and girls from 42 states were involved. Each participant takes 25 foul shots, and every step of the contest is sponsored by the Elks. This program “has been effective not only in developing champions but character”. Oak Hill has supported the local program for 29 years, and our students have performed very well. This year alone, we captured 16 of the 18 possible trophies including all 6 First place awards! In 1987, Allyson Stoll finished 8th in the Country at the National Hoop Shoot finals!
Representatives of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund recently visited the Pemberton Early Childhood Education Center [PECEC] to make a special donation of $1,000 toward the purchase of books for children whose parents are deployed service members. The books will be used in a number of Pemberton Township schools including the Pemberton Early Childhood Education Center, Fort Dix Elementary School, and Aletta Crichton School.
The champions in each of the six age groups moved on to the district competition on January 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the Carl Sandberg Middle School in Old Bridge, NJ with hopes on moving to the State competition and beyond. This year we had some very good competition in the different age groups with the following results on December 22, 2013:
The fund was created and founded in 2006 in order to honor Middletown resident 1st Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II, United States Army, who was killed in action while deployed in Iraq on November 19, 2005.
Boys 8-9 1. Anthony DeJohn 2. Louis Ambrosio 3. Dimitry Corba Girls 8-9 1. Sara Braunstein 2. Samantha AbdelBarry 3. Anna Hindermann Boy 10-11 1. Michael Jordan 2. Stephen Sharpe

After the District competition was held, Oak Hill swept the boys competition capturing all three championships and moving on to the State Tournament. Congratulations to Anthony DeJohn (8-9), Michael Jordan (10-11), & Stephen Braunstein (12-13) in the State Finals!

Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski Memorial Fund Donates Funds For Pemberton Township Schools Funds To Buy Books To Help Children Cope With a Parent’s Deployment
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
“Many of our children have parents from nearby military installations that have been deployed,” explained PECEC Preschool Teacher Sharon Donnelly. “There are numerous books available to help younger children cope with the reality of a parent’s deployment and their feelings about it.” Following the check presentation, Captain Matthew Zilinski, brother of Lt. Dennis Zilinski and a member of the Second Battalion 254th Training Regiment at Sea Girt, read a book about a dad who was deployed aloud to the children. Said Captain Zilinski, “I was particularly touched by this donation in my brother’s memory because I have a child of my own, and I know how difficult a deployment can be on a family, especially children.” For more information, please visit www.runwithdennis.org or email RunwithDennis@yahoo.com.

T
he word “pandemic” is applied to a virus outbreak when it demonstrates the ability to pass efficiently form person-to-person and can spread the virus globally. The current 2014 flu season has officially been classified as a pandemic by the CDC.
Dr. Golding Granado of Immediate Care Medical Walk-In said, “The flu is a very contagious respiratory viral illness – and can cause infection ranging from mild body aches and cough to a more severe illness with pneumonia like symptoms including: cough, body aches, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, headache, fatigue and may also include nausea diarrhea or vomiting.” Complications from the flu include dehydration, pneumonia, asthma flare up, shortness of breath and prolonged fatigue as well as wages lost due to prolonged illness.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
Dr. Golding Granado, Medical Director at Immediate Care, said she is prepared to treat any flu complications patients may have, including intravenous fluid hydration and early medication management, early treatment are key to successful recovery from the flu. The best prevention is vaccination! The vaccination period for the flu starts in late fall [October] and continues through spring [March] of the following year. The tri-valent or quadra-valent vaccines are equally recommended. It takes about two weeks to develop full immunity, and it’s not too late to get the vaccine this year. Who should get the vaccine? Everyone 6-months of age and older, but especially people who are between 6-months and 5-years and those who are 65+ years or older. If you have a history of Asthma, COPD, recurrent pneumonia, heart disease or diabetes then you should get the vaccine every year as soon as possible. Caregivers, teachers, nannies, or those who work with the public or large groups, anyone who takes public transportation or works in the health care field should also be vaccinated.

St. Benedicts Donates Over
$20,000 to Deserving Families
S
t. Benedict’s Church and School in Holmdel took the season of giving to heart in December, presenting a $27,005.25 check to the St. Vincent Du Paul Society (SVDP). The check was a result of weeks of fundraising by the St. Benedict’s PTA for money, food and toys for needy individuals and families, with help from the entire community. “The donations poured in from individuals everywhere,” a news release from the school said. “Including local community families and businesses.” Project co-chairs Linda Armstrong and Lori Ulrich presented the check to an “overwhelmed and most appreciative,” Patti Dickens, President of the St. Vincent Du Paul Society, which leads women and men to join together by offering person-toperson service to the needy and suffering.

Marjorie and her husband Linn moved to Colts Neck in 1972, Linn was taking a job as a scientist at Bell Lab & Research. Marjorie has been playing the harp for over 50 years and her husband is always in tow to help maneuver the instrument (even in a snow storm)! “I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful décor and festive atmosphere at J Vincent Jewelers during the holidays. It was a delight to play there,” noted Marjorie Mollenauer.
