A CELEBRATION OF THE HEART February celebrates all matters of the heart. This month is synonymous with Valentine’s Day, a day we get to show all the ones we love how much they mean to us. If you are thinking of buying something special, we have the perfect gift guide on page 18, courtesy of J. Vincent Jewelers. This month is also designated as American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, for both men and women, people of all ages and backgrounds. Looking at facts, prevention, and finding ways to improve your heart health every month will benefit yourself and the people you love in the long run. In keeping with our goal of bringing you inspiring, uplifting stories about your neighbors and friends, we rely on the community to inform us of the amazing residents we have right here in Monmouth County. So if you know someone (or yourself) that has impacted the community, has a unique hobby, or is just really interesting – we would love to hear about them. And just a reminder, we accept local event and fundraiser listings; engagement, wedding and baby announcements; student and resident achievements; and so much more! You can email us at info@communitymagazinenj.com.

The Food Spy Mission:
To Uncover Hidden Epicurean Delights HUDDY’S INN OF COLTS NECK THE TRADITION CONTINUES, BIGGER AND BETTER Huddy's Inn has been a staple for over 30 years, but its owners, Sal Asaro and Ray Longobardi, have a new, relocated treasure chest on the map that fuses the past and the present. The vision was to make a place where people can meet, drink and eat, and they nailed it – evidenced by the crowds. This with a small, single indescript sign exclaiming this new and refreshed landmark - with Huddy’s, think green, pub, classic ... wrapped up in a Cheers-like feel. The location at the corner of Routes 537 and 34 in Colts Neck, features a large out-
door patio, three bars and a wonderful private party room overlooking the Pebble Creek Golf Course clubhouse (which Longobardi also owns). Huddy's has space for volleyball, bocce, horseshoes and more on the large outdoor property. At nearly 11,000 square feet, it's more than triple the size of the original place, and the building sits on a seven-acre parcel of land that has dedicated itself to the old Huddy's as well as to the town it calls home and American history. The restaurant’s namesake Joshua Huddy was the commander of a New Jersey Patriot militia during the American Revolutionary War, was captured twice, escaped and was summarily hanged. Huddy's death became a motiving force behind the cause. In fact, the original restaurant used to have copies to take home of the story and the U.S. Constitution. (With the new Huddy’s, it’s the food and drink that are the motivating force behind the cause.) It is this attention to detail and respect for simplicity and tradition that underpins the kitchen as the food makes its way to it patrons. The dining room at the “old” Huddy's Inn was lined with built-in booths, a look that was replicated in one of three dining rooms at the new restaurant - down to the original stained glass panels and Tiffany-style lamps, porcelain tiles and rooms decorated in warm tones of tan and brown. In the main dining room, a floor-to-ceiling stone gas fireplace is the focal point a tribute to the smaller one
in the original restaurant. Antique decorations that line the walls, photographs, and equestrian memorabilia pay tribute to history. The dining experience can begin behind the bar where sizzling burgers and fresh meat are tended to, along with barbequed clams on the open grill that almost begs you to sit down and cancel the table reservation and grab a cocktail. The bar is big and the high tops along the perimeter to create a great pub feel. Deeper into the restaurant, the kitchen serves a variety of sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads, pasta, chicken, steak and seafood entrees served with house salad or a cup of soup, choice of starch, and for all steaks, add gorgonzola cheese and spicy pecans for a nice kick. The menu is vast and the regulars have their staples. The Food Spy flew under the radar and had the special, broiled grouper over asparagus risotto with mango salsa, and oysters Rockefeller and all was delicious. I will admit the menu is easy, and generally good food. But I must say the burgers are far above average and the plates of nachos that breezed by our table were show-stopping. We went back on a separate occasion and had the prime rib - by far the most popular selection, which was nicely cooked, juicy, and large. I am sure that this place will continue to pack them in and remain quite popular - it has the makings and it has the location. Familiar staff continued to offer $12 and $15 entrees with a smile. If you are going out soon, see the old Huddy’s in a new setting. Huddy’s has landed at 20E County Road 537 in Colts Neck. Ray and Sal have created a warm and welcoming atmosphere – and the crowds are there to prove it. They don’t take reservations, but that is not a problem because you won’t mind starting your evening at the bar as you wait for your table. Until next month – live well, eat well. The Food Spy

PLANS FOR HOLMDEL LIBRARY UNVEILED
Somerset Development Donates $1 Million to Efforts
It was a packed house at Bell Works for a special event on January 12, 2017 that unveiled the plans for Holmdel’s new library that will be opening this fall. Just like the building it will be in, it will be a hub for sharing ideas, as the iconic Bell Labs building once did and housed Nobel Prize winners and inventions that transformed telecommunications. Holmdel Mayor Gregory Buontempo noted that this will replace the current Library, which is located in the basement of town hall. The Library and Learning Center will be part library, part state-of-the-art learning center, and part historical museum tracing Bell Labs’ historic role in the technological revolutions of the 20th and 21st centuries. It will have displays, digital and interactive media, historical film clips, replicas of some of Bell Labs’ most famous inventions, and other information resources. “Truly, this new library and learning center will have something for everyone. From grade-schoolers to seniors. A number of educational, information and cultural programs will be offered throughout the facility, all throughout the year. As we get closer to the opening, we will publish a schedule of the Center’s initial program offerings. And we’re also planning some very special events in connection with the Center’s Grand Opening,” said Holmdel Mayor Gregory Buontempo. To make this event even more special, Ralph Zucker, president of Somerset Development, presented a check for $1 million dollars toward the library’s construction costs. Somerset Development is hosting its annual fundraiser at Bell Works on March 2, 2017. This year, proceeds will be dedicated to the new Holmdel Public Library and Learning Center. Additional details will be announced soon, including how to purchase tickets and donate to the facility.

We’ve spent the last seven months examining the above seven proverbial “Keys To Success”. And if you’re just joining us, it’s not too late. The wrap-up is, that in order for this all (or any) advice to work, your life must be in BALANCE (in a Fung-Shui sorta way). It is BALANCE that is the grout of all success – spiritually, emotionally and economically. Let me get the throat clearing out of the way first. I suppose there are some “successful” people who spend as much time on their personal life as they do their professional life – but just for kicks, calculate the number of hours you spend “out of the house” working vs. the time you spend with, what most would say are our most important assets, your family and friends, no pencil needed, do the quick math in your head. Truth be told, there are very few of us that spend more time with “the assets” than grinding it out and falling back on foundations of work ethic that have been instilled in us by our parents, grandparents and mentors. The typical defensive response this instigates is - “it depends on what you mean by success.” Most of us would define success as making enough money to comfortably support our families. This, especially in/around major metropolitan areas where the standard of living tends to be higher, is no simple task. Quite frankly, there is a strong belief that this next generation will have a harder time than we did (but then again, I suppose, every generation says that). The good news is, I have met many entrepreneurs who have achieved this work-life balance – and I met many that have not. You know the type – the ones that always seem to be scrambling and somewhat disorganized. The truth is, most of us tend to spend a disproportionate amount of time “at work”. We have learned somewhere along the line that work ethic, hours and hard work PAY OFF and in fact, THEY DO. It is here that lies the dichotomy and the dilemma. I’ve seen relationships stumble, quality time with the kids suffer and misery ensue in the pursuit of success. Who am I to say
this? I have dealt with literally hundreds of clients and entrepreneurs over the last 25+ years in my professional career as a consultant and financial advisor. I have heard almost every parent and professional say that they strive for work-life balance. Heck we’ve stuffed the line into their personal and financial goal plans and their company’s mission statements. We’ve all promised and apologized to loved ones; and I have heard countless stories about how people worked until the last possible minute and then flew home to barely catch their son’s soccer game or daughter’s dance recital (and more than likely missed a few). Is there any other way? Is this a good thing? A bad thing? That’s not for us to judge. I am raising this issue for one reason only. The sooner we recognize, confront and communicate the dedication to balance (and get the people we care about to accept it), the better and more enjoyable success and life becomes. In the lack of support of people who care, is where life begins to unravel and become OUT OF BALANCE. So cater to those who support you – because success is not sweet without them. The ultimate punch-line is, true balance is with people, not with tasks, advice or success keys. It’s dangerous to generalize, but true happiness and balance (regardless of the size of your house or your checkbook), is having the love, respect and support from your partners, the ones you work with, and the ones your live with. These are life’s assets that all the computers, pencils and math cannot calculate their value.

Tracey & Jon Stewart's Animal Sanctuary Receives Key Approval
Story: LiliAnn Paras
“Come along for the ride! Love is fun!”

This is the welcoming message on Tracey Stewart’s blog, The Daily Squeal. This seemingly simple sentiment is filled with a deeper meaning. The “love” is love for animals and now Monmouth County residents will be able to be “part of the ride”. Tracey and Jon Stewart recently received the Colts Neck Planning Board’s unanimous approval of the proposed Farm Sanctuary at their historic Hockhockson Farm in Colts Neck. The new venture is planned for 2018 and will fulfill the Stewarts’ vision for rescuing animals, farming the land, and educating the public. To the outside world, it may seem like this progressed quickly. But Tracey’s journey from a veterinary technician to owning a 45-acre sanctuary is a tale of exactly devotion and persistence. She bathroom. This wasn't recounts her journey with a joyous the type of “mysterious woman” spirit in her interviews and in her she hoped to project. Of course, New York Times bestselling book, her relationships with the cat and Do Unto Animals, an entertaining Jon blossomed and Tracey credits guide to helping pets, backyard Jon for encouraging her to make wildlife and farm animals. As she said in her The book is filled with stories NPR Fresh Air interview*, Jon knew and practical advice, beautifully she needed a job that “would make illustrated by Lisel Ashlock. the Stewarts toured a Farm Sanctuary facility in New York in 2015, they came face to face with rescued pigs, now known as Anna and Maybelle, that had been discovered roaming the streets. They suspect the pair most likely toppled from a crowded transport truck. There and then they decided to give the pigs a home in New Jersey, where today they are as playful as the rescued dogs. That same year, Tracey surprised everyone at a Farm Sanctuary gala, proclaiming, “We’re getting married! Farm Sanctuary and us…” and announced that their farm will become the New Jersey branch of Farm Sanctuary. “We’re going to build new advocates, new curious learners, and new leaders for this
very important movement.” She shared her feelings that Farm Sanctuary does "rescue and sanctuary for animals, and then without realizing it, they also do rescue and sanctuary for people.” ** The kindness continued when Tracey and Jon adopted an older abandoned horse who was in terrible condition, sore and covered in paint from being used as a paintball target. The cruelty was staggering, but Lily the horse did find comfort at the farm before she died. Not all the stories are as tragic. Tracey told Terry Gross, the host of NPR’s Fresh Air, about a time she had a different animal around her neck. During a photo shoot for the New York Times, Tracy stood with her back to a young bull for longer than the bull was accustomed. The bull misread her body language. Without any warning, Tracey soon had one hoof on one shoulder and another hoof on the other shoulder, and felt the bull’s breath on her neck. She was quickly whisked away unhurt, although it took about two weeks to be fully recovered from supporting a 1500-pound animal. Tracey happily told the story whenever asked why her back hurt. More stories should be created soon as the red tape nears an end, and while there are still further approvals from other agencies needed before final approval may be obtained, Tracey and Jon seem optimistic. They are certainly making the effort to be good neighbors, sensitive to, and addressing the issues of lighting, traffic, noise, odors, and buffers. There will be a visiting center and lecture room, a sustainable farm operation and of course, rescued animals. However, the farm will not be a drop off for injured or unwanted animals and the number and type of animals will be limited. Generally, Farm Sanctuary and other similar animal organizations are asked by animal control and care agencies to take animals that are deemed appropriate for their facility. Animals at Farm Sanctuary typically come from road sides, “kill piles”, slaughter houses, or live markets. Visits to the sanctuary will be scheduled and events will be limited in number. Jon summed it up at the planning board meeting, when he said, “Our intention all along was to be cooperative, to try to make this a project that Colts Neck would be proud of and that they would get the type of benefit out of it that we have wanted.” Once preliminary approval was a given, Jon kept the mood light adding, “I wonder how much this is going to cost me."*** There is a lot of excitement and anticipation for the project to begin and Monmouth County residents are fortunate to be along for this mostworthy ride. *NPR Fresh Air with Terry Gross 11/3/201 ** www.farmsanctuary.org, 2015 press release ***app.com video 1/11/2017

Monmouth University Names the Official Archival Center for Works & Memorabilia
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN’S
Plans Announced to Launch The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music
Monmouth University announced a new collaborative partnership to establish The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music. Through the collaboration, Monmouth University becomes the official archival repository for Springsteen’s written works, photographs, periodicals, and artifacts. The announcement was made during “A Conversation with Bruce Springsteen,” held on January 10, 2017 at the University’s Pollak Theatre. The new collaboration broadens an existing relationship between Springsteen and Monmouth University, which has served as the home of the Bruce Springsteen Special Collection since 2011. The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music will preserve and promote the legacy of Bruce Springsteen and his role in American music, while

honoring and celebrating icons of American music like Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Frank Sinatra, and others. The expanded partnership will help to more deeply integrate the history and inspiration of American music into the curriculum and research experience at Monmouth. It will also serve to bolster an already highly successful music industry program at the university, one of only nine university affiliates of the GRAMMY Museum. “Monmouth University is excited by the opportunity to grow our relationship with Bruce Springsteen,” said Monmouth University President Paul R. Brown. “Our partnership has been a natural one -- just steps from Springsteen’s birthplace and the site where "Born to Run" was written, Monmouth University’s location brilliantly captures the essence of Springsteen’s music while providing the academic heft of one of only nine university affiliates of the GRAMMY Museum. The establishment of The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music celebrates and reinforces the Jersey Shore’s legacy in the history of American music, while providing a truly transformative experience for our students.”

Finding that Perfect Balance while Juggling the Family Act
Family Hot Spot for
Valentine’s Day Wow, seven years since celebrating a romantic Valentine's Day with my husband. Post kids, our annual plans have gone from what are “you and I” doing to what is the “family” doing? Since a chocolate couple's massage and shopping for lingerie aren't exactly kid-friendly, we have stepped up our game in the creativity department with our group Valentine's Day activities. This year, Cupid's arrow is pointing our hearts to a fun-filled evening at hibachi. Find out five cool reasons this Japanese themed restaurant is one of the most highly recommended places to dine, love and laugh with your significant entourage.
2-in-1 Activity
Cucumber Competition
Decadent Desserts
Buying tickets for an interactive show and then traveling to feed your family can be chaotic, time consuming and costly. At hibachi, you can grab front row seats at the grill and enjoy a theatre and dining experience without unnecessary stress. You’ll be able to relax, while the chef hypnotizes your kids with mind-blowing tricks, cute jokes, and opportunities to participate in the act.
Part of the act is being a willing participant. Everyone who sits at a hibachi table is there to have a good time. Some of the best moments are when there is a friendly wager or game between family members. The cucumber toss is one challenge that always brings out mom and dad competitive streak. Here’s your chance to impress your little ones with your hidden skills of catching a cucumber with your mouth, and then stick it to them with a big hug and kiss after you win.
And for the finale – drum roll please… don’t forget to order something decadent and scrumptious for your sweethearts, especially on Valentine’s Day. Whether you are a sherbet lover or a tempura fried ice-cream fanatic, there is a special treat for everyone at the end of the night. Some hibachi steakhouses even have a few ingredients for the kids to make sundaes that they won’t find on the menu (can you say chocolate syrup or whipped cream?)!
Chef-tastic Stunts Of course, most parents know what to expect when heading over to hibachi. No matter how many times you’ve seen the stacked onion volcano on the verge of erupting, it automatically elicits a smile and brings you back to your youth. For some of us, it was like being at the circus for the first time or on set of an 80’s kungfu movie. Now, imagine how your kids must feel when they watch these talented grill masters twirl their knives, juggle ingredients, and spray water at them. Just make sure you capture it all on video.

Plates for Picky Eaters When it comes to the food, your kids won’t be able to throw a tantrum or refuse to eat at this place. Whether they like their meat well done, their noodles plain, their rice steamed, or just eat carrots and broccoli, there are so many ways you can tailor the menu to their taste buds. Another family outing bonus, is you don’t have to sacrifice your meal. From sushi to shrimp to stir fry you can cater to your cravings as well.

DIVORCE TALK: HOME OR AWAY?

BY P E T E R C . PA R A S , E S Q.
When divorcing parents live in different states, which court has jurisdiction over custody and child support disputes? And, which state’s laws apply? These questions were relatively rare years ago. However, we live in an increasingly mobile society and they have become fairly commonplace.
Sometimes courts in different states reached different conclusions. Court orders conflicted. Which state’s order took precedence? And since the United States Constitution requires states to give full faith and credit to judgments from other states, how was this even constitutional?
In the past, each state applied its own law in deciding whether it had jurisdiction and whether to apply its laws. Frequently, parents would begin litigation in the states of their residence to gain a tactical and, sometimes, legal advantage. A “race to the courthouse” sometimes rewarded the winner with home field advantage. Just as often, litigation proceeded in two states simultaneously, resulting in enormous additional expenditures of time and money.
The remedy for these interstate legal conflicts has been found in Uniform Laws which are enacted by each state as its state law. These laws are virtually identical in each state and are designed to sort out which state’s courts have jurisdiction and which state’s laws apply. These laws frequently provide for the judges in each state to communicate, to discuss the facts and the law, and to resolve these issues. Once jurisdiction is settled, the litigation

can proceed and the substantive issues can be addressed. These conflicts come up most frequently in interstate custody and child support disputes and are governed by the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA) and the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA). How the jurisdictional dispute is resolved often has a tremendous impact on a parent’s ability to fight for custody or child support because of the extra time and expense that comes with litigating in the spouse’s state of residence. These are important issues that you and your lawyer must give careful consideration. An objective analysis and preparation are essential.

Members and guests enjoyed coffee, refreshments, a social hour, a business meeting and the annual "Game Day" party! The club provided the funny and unusual prizes and everyone had a great time with a lot of laughs. The board has completed the calendar for the remainder of the year - the club will focus on nutrition and health in February, organizing and home décor for March, the annual "Treasure Auction" will be in April and the annual spring luncheon in May. The board, as always, has been working hard to bring new educational events and entertainment to the members. Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome - so join in and enjoy a day of socialization and information. The yearly cost for membership in the club is only $40. The Newcomers and Neighbors Club was founded in 1971 by Colts Neck resident Louise Martorana. Since then, the meetings have been held in many different venues and are now held at the Conover Road Firehouse #2. Louise is still a member of the club and is thrilled to see how much it has developed since she created it 45 years ago! We now know about the social and emotional lives of these animals, and the endless deprivation for these creatures living in near constant confinement or tethered to chains. With other forms of entertainment available to the American public, why put the animals through the relentless travel, long-term confinement, and forcible training techniques? In the last few years, the dispute that there is something wrong with the mistreatment and display of wild animals penetrated the consciousness of the country and consumers simply went elsewhere. In the wake of Ringling’s first announcement, ending the use of elephants in traveling acts, California and Rhode Island adopted policies banning the use of bullhooks in handling elephants. This

NJ State Council Director | The Humane Society of the United States Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has sent a second thunderbolt in the span of two years – a little more than a flash of time in the company’s 146-year history, but as dramatic and sensational as one could imagine. Last month, Ringling announced to the Associated Press that it was shuttering its entire business and brand come May. The company’s prior announcement, in March 2015, that it was ending its use of elephants and traveling acts had been remarkable, but this was historic. The biggest brand in exotic animal acts announced that there’s no viable future in that line of work. The parent company has monster trucks, ice skating, and other forms of spectator entertainment that are generating profits and drawing crowds. Those forms remain viable, but not elephants doing head stands and tigers and lions jumping through hoops. The public just doesn’t
enact a ban on traveling shows that feature performances by "wild or exotic" animals, a move that is designed to keep circuses out of county parks. Jersey City, the state’s second-most-populous city has enacted a similar ban.
What is even more remarkable is the movement of a state bill
which would prohibit the use of elephants in traveling animal acts. This legislation has already passed through the full senate with overwhelming bipartisan support. These measures demonstrate that government has a complementary role to play and we applaud our local and state legislators who are taking a humane position on this issue. Closing the curtain on all animal acts is the right thing to do — both in terms of moral and economic rational.

Monmouth County Extends County Route 537 through Fort Monmouth ROUTE RETURNS TO PUBLIC USE PICTURED ABOVE - Monmouth County marks the official opening of County Route 537 through the former Fort Monmouth property with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Janunary 17, 2017 in Tinton Falls. ONMOUTH COUNTY announced the official opening of County Route 537 through the former Fort Monmouth property on January 17, 2017. The road connects State Highway 35 (Main Street) in Eatontown to Oceanport Avenue (County Route 11) in Oceanport. When the Base Closure and Realignment (BRAC) Commission shuttered Fort Monmouth in 2011, the road was closed as well.
“Since 2005, I’ve been involved with the Fort Monmouth revitalization efforts and this is a positive next step in the planned redevelopment of Fort Monmouth, an initiative which will greatly impact the quality of life and overall living standard for all County residents,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry, who serves as the County freeholder representative on the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) board. “In addition, the opening will ease traffic congestion between Eatontown and Oceanport, another welcome benefit for our residents.” In
preparation of the opening, Monmouth County Public Works and
30
Engineering personnel worked to return the approximately two-mile connector thoroughfare to public use. The County installed temporary fencing, new signage and repaired traffic signals. The County also made drainage system repairs and improvements, realigned, reconfigured and repaved sections of the road. The road now meets the County’s road specifications and it will be maintained by Monmouth County. Along the Eatontown section of County Route 537, referred to as Avenue of Memories, existing monuments and the “Johnson Gate” arches at the State Highway 35 entrance have been repaired and cleaned. Avenue of Memories is named for the monuments and trees placed in memory of U.S. Army Signal Corps soldiers killed in action during foreign wars. There is video surveillance along the entire corridor, which will be patrolled by the Oceanport and Eatontown police departments with assistance from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office. “I would like to express my personal appreciation to Monmouth County for

the focus and attention paid by everyone involved with this project to reopen this roadway to the public and especially to the residents of Monmouth County,” said James V. Gorman, Chair, Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority. “Extending County Route 537 will alleviate traffic congestion on area roadways, and allow all to see the potential development and business opportunities that the former Fort now affords,” said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone. According to Freeholder Serena DiMaso, liaison to the Monmouth County Improvement Authority, “We are excited about this crucial step in the revitalization of Fort Monmouth. Financing through the Monmouth County Improvement Authority coupled with the County’s AAA bond rating, made this this project possible.” FMERA’s goal is to develop 1,585 housing units; 300,000 square feet of non-profit, civic and government and educational space; 500,000 square feet for retail; and 2 million square feet dedicated to offices, research and commercial uses.

The most unique facet of these networking events is that the educational component is interactive, with the audience helping create the scenario in which they teach. It truly is an experience like no other and leads to lively discussions among the attendees. Women enjoy meeting other woman business owners in these settings, all while increasing their own visibility and referral sources. Jill pointed out, “Just like men do business on the golf course, women entrepreneurs need to do business while having fun. We offer a unique twist to a traditional networking event.”

Marlis and Broeck Steadman in their Rumson home. PHOTO: MELISSA AMORELLI PHOTOGRAPHY
art is life
for Rumson coup le STORY SHANNA POLIGNONE
BROECK AND MARLIS STEADMAN ARE ARTISTS. Their work graces the walls of Monmouth County schools, libraries and residences in the form of murals. You are sure to have seen their art among your travels through town. You may even recognize some of their paintings as the hallmarks of home, but their careers did not begin where they hold their fame today. The path that led them to the title of muralists is a winding, but fun one. I had a wonderful afternoon with the couple inside their Rumson home to learn the stories along the way.

On a warm winter afternoon, Broeck met our team on the front porch of his Victorian home, guiding us to the yard. He wanted to check on his beehive. Broeck explained that he and his son had transported this colony earlier that day from another location. He pointed in the direction for us to run should they be angry and ready to sting - immediate proof that there cannot be a dull day in the Steadman home. Satisfied the bees were content since no stinging ensued and their buzzing was quiet, Broeck held open the door to his home and introduced us to his wife, Marlis. With a handshake and an offer for a cup of tea, the two made us feel instantly at home. Once inside, my eyes did not know where to land; eclectic art work throughout the open f loor plan drew me in. I wanted to spend hours exploring and studying it all. A beautiful beach scene of water and dunes, seagulls and sea grass spreads across the walls connecting the sitting room and the kitchen, all a creation of Broeck’s. The first f loor bathroom is hand painted and Marlis created the mosaic f loor. The rooms downstairs are decorated with souvenirs from their travels throughout the world. The countertops have Marlis’ pottery scattered about in the form of coffee cups, platters and whimsical décor.
A familiar site. Going down River Road in Rumson you have seen this mural on the building that houses the new restaurant, Russel & Bette’s.
he took led him to another, different from the last. Eventually his art work would be found in some of the most unique places. “I never said no to a project. Even if I didn’t know how to do it, I went out and learned”. It’s safe to say somewhere in your life, you may have held Broeck’s artwork in your hands. His artwork can be found on liquor bottles, soda cans, cars, jet planes, computers, toothpaste and even chocolate. Broeck describes it as “it seemed like I had done it all”. But he was wrong. Broeck was offered the role as illustrator for the book covers of young adult thrillers. This was something he had not yet left his mark on, but it was part of his vision. “I had dreamt of being an illustrator after I drew a dream I had, and I had always loved children’s books and wanted to illustrate them. As a
This mural is in the children’s room at the Oceanic Library in Rumson - the background is from Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are”.
Growing up, both Marlis and Broeck loved art and spent their days creating. Marlis had never considered art as a possibility for a career; for Broeck, art was his mission. It’s fun to hear how each job
child I loved monster movies. I saw every one over and over, so here was my genre, opening in front of me.” It was his dream come true. His art work today is featured on more than 200 of these thrillers.
Marlis began her career doing typesetting for a newspaper, then worked at Macy’s where she ran Macy’s entire typesetting department and purchased its first computers. She eventually left Macy’s and in a total career change, became a mother, raising their daughter Tillie and son Evan Thomas. Marlis spent her free time taking pottery classes and became a teacher herself. As the children got older, Marlis, along with a friend, began a business painting faux finishes. Occasionally murals would be required. Marlis created those on her own until one of those simple twists of fate, where the husband and wife found themselves working on the first of a lifetime of murals painted together. Deane-Porter School in Rumson had just finished a year of study on Africa and wanted to memorialize it by decorating the walls of the cafeteria with an African scene. The school put out a call for volunteers to assist in the creation of the mural. The pair said “yes” and together, with a little help, created a 66-foot mural touching on many aspects of Africa. Broeck’s newest love in art was formed murals. He was hooked and to the surprise of Marlis, he offered to do the same for all the Rumson schools. “I came home and said to him ‘you said what!?’” Marlis tells with a smile. Broeck’s offer was accepted and they were off to paint an underwater scene at Forrestdale School. Word of mouth brought them from one project

to the next, beginning with local parents asking if the duo could create a scene on the wall of their children’s rooms and branching out as far a Florida and Oregon. It has been 30 years since that first mural and they are still creating them together, side by side. I asked them how they enjoyed working together. “We just love it,” Broeck replied. Marlis continued, “It’s the personal communication we get to have throughout the day. We don’t miss out on each other’s lives and we get to discuss what we will have for dinner.” She explained their work plan and how it goes so smoothly each time. “Whoever gets the job is the boss, -- it’s as simple as that.” Broeck always does the sketches and the boss calls all the shots. They began to reminisce about some of their murals and shared the ones that were the most fun and the most meaningful. One is the entrance way of the Cedar Drive Middle School in Colts Neck. Broeck shared, “I wanted to greet the students with art as soon as they walked in.” So he created a mural of art history, using a few paintings that almost everyone recognizes and adding in other familiar paintings to create one scene. They repeated the idea with a similar concept at the Rumson Oceanic Library children’s room. They added in a variety of characters from children’s books. Broeck chose “Where the Wild Things Are” as the background, and added the characters to

fit into the scene. Marlis told me about a bathroom she painted, using the nature of the homeowners’ yard as her inspiration. She added elements of the property into the scene. With a smile she told me her favorite part of the painting: a cardinal placed right above the faucet, its head crooked as if to ask “what are you doing?” each time someone turns on the water. One mural they both agreed was “a work of love” is a realistic view of gardens and fields, spread along the walls of the treatment room of an oncology office. Broeck and Marlis were asked to create a feeling of escapism, with paths that lead out of the room, to give the patients a vision of a way out. Broeck smiled as he told me about it. “It just brings so many people joy.” They added sheep, and by request, the pets of the doctors and the office staff. “Much of our work is serendipity - people see things you don’t see because you get so wrapped up in your work.” Marlis shared, “It’s wonderful to watch people get so absorbed in what you are doing. It really just is about the people.” When they are not creating masterpieces for the walls of their fans, Marlis and Broeck can be found indulging in their own favorite forms of expression: oil painting and pottery for Marlis; bee keeping, gardening and cooking for Broeck. As a family they love to travel and scuba dive. This March they will

be spending 11 days on a boat diving in the Maldives, giving them the chance to knock something else off Broeck’s bucket list - diving all around the world. Career-wise, their focus is on creating murals. It’s a passion they want to continue to chase. Broeck is especially excited for the next project he has in the works an interactive mural. While I can’t share too much about this unique and fun creation, it is sure to bring joy and education to many. Keep your eyes out for this pair and their work along your own travels throughout Monmouth County. You can visit Broeck and Marlis at etsteadman. com.

A Message from the Holmdel Mayor On behalf of the Township Committee, please accept our warmest wishes for a healthy and happy New Year. The unanimous nomination of the elected township committee as Mayor is an honor. Dedication, hard work, commitment and compassion are words I don’t take lightly. I am fully prepared to dedicate my time and talent as Holmdel’s Mayor for 2017. The unique privilege of having the support of each and every member on the committee does not go unrecognized. With a unified committee I am confident that, as your Mayor, Holmdel will continue to prosper. I fully appreciate the diversities and commonalities that make Holmdel unique. I will make great efforts to continue in the wisdom and sound leadership that are the building blocks of good sound government. I will be dedicated and listen to the entire population of Holmdel. It will take hard work and commitment to continue the positive growth everyone is compassionate about. I am and will continue to be foremost, a committee person, with the honor of holding the title of Mayor for 2017. Understanding how our Holmdel governing body functions is key to appreciating the various duties, positions, and appointments that are part of Holmdel’s government. Properly functioning under these laws is what makes our township reliable, consistent, and a great place to live. Holmdel’s governing body functions on a committee form of government. Each committee member has an equal vote, regardless of the title of mayor, deputy mayor, or committee person. Each and every year, the Township Committee selects a mayor from among the five sitting committee members. It is our policy to rotate the position, of which we are all aware. The mayor, the first among equals, comes with ceremonial responsibilities, but is no better or more powerful than the other members. Our Township Committee appoints its members as liaisons to key committees. Allow me to identify such appointments; Mayor Greg Buontempo, liaison to Administration; Deputy Mayor, Pat Impreveduto is liaison to Public Safety; Committeemen Tom Critelli to Finance; Mike Nikolis to Community Development; and Eric Hinds to the Board of Education. Everyone on the township committee is approachable to the Holmdel residents in all areas. I am excited to be entering into this new chapter with all of you. Holmdel Township has been my family’s home for 20 years. We chose to live here because of the excellent and gifted community that makes Holmdel special. It is my wish to continue to look to the future with a reverent respect for our past to merge all that is good and move forward with a steady and resolute focus on Holmdel’s success. It is my hope, that together we will share our passion for such a future, and join me along with the entire township committee to get there. Ranney School Grads Thriving at Colleges and Universities across the Country Alums thankful for school’s personalized College Counseling Program, which now begins in 8th grade Ranney School juniors and seniors heard first-hand how the school’s graduates are thriving at collegiate institutions across the country as part of a Young Alumni College Panel. The annual event, led by Ranney’s College Office and Alumni Office, brings firstyear college students back to campus to share their experiences and answer questions from upper-classmen currently embarking on their college search and application process.
Ranney School Class of 2016 alums spoke to current upper-classmen at a recent Young Alumni College Panel. Back row, left to right: Peri Rohl of Freehold, Tessa Payer of Wall, Sophia Jackman of Freehold, and Rachel Staats of Colts Neck. Front row, left to right: Corey Natofsky of Marlboro, Sidarth Sharma of Morganville, Daniel Blumenkrantz of Colts Neck, Jerome Cohen of West Long Branch, Jacob Wahba of Holmdel, and Dean Parker of Toms River.
Featured on the panel, with majors ranging from business to theater to molecular biology, were the Class of 2016’s: Daniel Blumenkrantz of Colts Neck – University of Miami; Jerome Cohen of West Long Branch – University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business; Sophia Jackman of Freehold – Harvard University; Corey Natofsky of Marlboro – Stevens Institute of Technology (on the Div III Baseball Team); Dean Parker of Toms River – Columbia University; Peri Rohl of Freehold – Fordham University at Lincoln Center; Sidarth Sharma of Morganville – Gettysburg College; Rachel Staats of Colts Neck – Georgetown University; Tessa Payer of Wall – The College of William and Mary; and Jacob Wahba of Holmdel – Muhlenberg College. In addition to answering typical questions about workload, dorm life, and the dining hall experience, alums expressed how well Ranney prepared them for the rigor of college. For example, they noted how the advising system and small class sizes at Ranney helped them forge positive relationships with their professors early on—a confidence that gave them an edge over their peers. And they expressed gratitude for learning how to successfully balance academics and extracurriculars while at Ranney, enabling alums like Sophia Jackman to continue her love for acting and singing in college while also pursuing a major in biology. But most important, the young alums were thankful to the College Office for guiding them—and their families—step by step through their college process. Ranney’s comprehensive College Counseling Program includes an early start, with students as young as eighth grade being introduced to the College Office team and what to expect through their high school years. Starting at the end of this academic year, Ranney’s ninth-
44
graders will be assigned a college counselor. “We want our incoming ninth graders to focus on being high schoolers, so they can adjust to the more rigorous curriculum of Upper School and take time to explore the various extracurricular activities that interest them. At the same time, we encourage students to start thinking about the college process at the end of the ninth grade so they can get answers to questions they may have regarding course selection, summer plans, standardized testing, and activities in their upper-class years,” explain Dr. Nick Accrocco and Mrs. Andrea Velasquez, Co-Directors of Ranney’s College Office. “Freshmen also have the opportunity to start building their college profile by working directly with counselors, faculty, and coaches who understand their interests and support their goals.” The early approach also enables the College Office to build a meaningful rapport with students and their families over the tenure of each student’s Upper School career. By the time a student reaches his or her senior
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
year, counselors are able to write unique, personalized letters of recommendation and provide specific advice as to which institutions might be good fits for each student. “We approach each student’s college journey differently, taking into consideration their unique interests, personalities, longterm aspirations, and family needs,” add Dr. Accrocco and Mrs. Velasquez, both of whom have years of college application review experience. “It is not our primary goal to see that every student gets into the most prestigious school, but rather, to ensure that every student finds the right-fit school—so that they can truly thrive throughout their college career and beyond.” For example, the school’s right-fit approach to college selection reaches beyond tests and grade point averages to integrate lifestyle, affordability, career inclination, geography, and extra-curricular pursuits. As a result of this personalized approach, 100% of Ranney graduates attend four-year colleges and universities year after year.

Referendum Date Set for Cross Farm Turf Fields Holmdel taxpayers may have been distracted in December by the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and missed the Holmdel Township Committee’s important announcement regarding the installation of two synthetic turf fields at Cross Farm Park. Following months of contentious township meetings, a twicesubmitted petition containing approximately 650 signatures and a lawsuit against Holmdel Township that was initiated and funded by Holmdel residents, the Township Committee has acted. It announced on December 13, 2016 that a referendum will be placed on the November 2017 election ballot regarding the $3,300,000 bond ordinance passed in September 2016 for these turf fields and other Cross Farm Park improvements. The inclusion of this referendum on the ballot demonstrates our democratic process at work. It will allow Holmdel voters rather than members of the Township Committee to determine whether our municipal taxes should pay for fields that will support not only Holmdel soccer/lacrosse players but players from neighboring towns as well. It is through the efforts of grassroots organizations like Preserve Holmdel, Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) and Save Holmdel Village (SHV) that this critical step in our democracy was not overlooked. We look forward to an objective referendum question that includes the true details and costs of this
I think the people of Holmdel spoke loud and clear in November; they wanted Eric Hinds to continue to lead our community. They voted him on to the Township Committee with very high numbers. Eric has done a great job leading the town and driving its important initiatives forward. He has spearheaded so many positive things and was only getting started. I understand that we the people were not voting for a “mayor position” in November. However, for him to be in THAT leadership position (mayor) during THAT election (this November) and to receive such overwhelming support, one would assume that the community would be behind him and want him to continue to lead. Surely you do not get that kind of outpouring of support from a community that WANTS you to step down from a position that you have served and excelled at for the past two years? What the community wanted did NOT matter this time. Here we have a representative government and our other representatives didn’t give a crap what their constituents wanted. I’m appalled and I’m just one of thousands. Our voices were heard but our wishes were ignored. This was a breakdown of the system at best and maybe worse, a breakdown in representative ethics. It needs to be remedied and I suspect that it will be made clear in next election just how upset this community is right now from the actions of its other leaders. I don’t pretend to know the motivations of committee members who orchestrated this and thought it was in OUR best interest to dismiss Eric from ANY leadership position. I do know that they made an ill-advised decision. I know it was ill-advised in my gut because I know many of the people they dismissed and I know how hard they worked for this community for all of the right reasons. I know their intentions were in MY best interest as a resident and the best interest of the MAJORITY of this community. I know this because these people gave of themselves tirelessly only to receive this treatment in return – it is unacceptable. What’s done is done. This letter is just to express my opinion not to change the past. We can only look to a brighter future for Holmdel and pray that these politics and egos are set aside or forced to be moved aside so those with motivations far purer can continue the good work that had been started. Until next election they have my open mind, only because I wish the best for the town. But we’re all watching, far more of us than ever before with far leerier an eye than any other time. What is going on in Holmdel with the Township Committee and the local Republican party since the last election is a shame Mayor Eric Hinds was reelected this past November but has seemingly been stripped of any important rolls in this new governing cycle. While this would not be so unusual for a “just show up” councilman in a do nothing system, where the rules call for positions to be rotated, this is unusual because of the immense work that Eric had done during his time as mayor. Bell Works and beyond, Eric and the Committee members have done a great job, but it was Eric who put in more time than anyone in getting these things accomplished. So now, to see posts and announcements about Bell Works and the new Library Center there, and to see all these local government officials thanked for it but not even mentioning Eric's name shows the obvious orchestrated effort to exclude him from any credit. And the Holmdel Republican party keeps deleting people's posts that mention Eric's name. They are not offensive posts, they are just saying “Yes, great work on this issue and thanks to Eric for his hard work as well...” because he is not mentioned in anything. It reminds me of Soviet style politics. It’s like the powers that be are trying to white wash him from history, trying to control the press. Why can’t they just acknowledge his work and effort, just mention his name when thanking people? What did he do to deserve this? This seems to me like the person who shows up to work on the union job and does too much work, so the other workers say “Hey, stop working so hard, you are making us look bad”, so now they are punishing him. I can’t see why else they are doing this, but maybe I am missing something. I know Eric, and I like many in town supported him and Mike in this last election, but I am certainly not a close friend or confidante. I just can’t believe the pettiness that is on display by many of the other committee people and by the Holmdel Republican Party. Fine, you rotated the Mayor, and fine, you want others to run some important posts, but do it in a coordinated team effort, not behind his back. Do you have to punish the guy by acting like he doesn’t exist or he had nothing to do with all the good things going on in town? At least acknowledge his efforts when you list three or four names. It seems like it is more effort to exclude him to the extent
48
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
they are doing so, than it would be to just mention his name. This just reminds people why politics is a dirty game and these actions will discourage good people from getting into politics in the future. But maybe that is what the political cronies want. MICHAEL BACHMANN | Holmdel
Holmdel Government Limits Public’s Right to Speak At the January 3, 2017 Holmdel Township Reorganization Meeting, our municipal government accomplished two “important” tasks. The first was to swear in the new Mayor, Township Committee members, and the various township committee appointees. The other task was to place a three-minute time limit on statements made by residents during the public portion of future meetings. It is disturbing that the new Township Committee felt the pressing need to limit resident participation in their local government as one of their first official acts of the year. There have been countless instances when the Holmdel municipal leaders have learned from insights and research presented to them by the public and altered their policies based on these comments. That is the basis of good, sound government and something to which all open societies aspire. By limiting public input, the Township Committee is closing itself off to other opinions besides those of the five men on the dais when deciding policies that affect all Holmdel residents. Abraham Lincoln stated that government was “of the people, by the people” and most notably “for the people”. This action by the Holmdel Township Committee members during their initial meeting of 2017 is not “for the people” of Holmdel. Rather, it is to enable the Committee members to limit our participation in deciding what we think is best for our families and our community. This cannot and should not be tolerated. Recently, Colts Neck Lions Club members screened 486 students for vision problems at Conover Road Primary School and Conover Road Elementary School. The students, from preschool to grade 5, were screened for several common vision conditions using a state-of-the-art vision screener. It LEFT TO RIGHT: Colts Neck Lion’s members Heather Powell, Andy Lotano, George works like a camera to identify problems Sherwood and John Walsh (seated) in just a few seconds. The screener can detect Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), Astigmatism (blurred vision), Anisometropia (unequal refractive power), Strabismus (eye misalignment), Anisocoria (unequal pupil size). Problems can be detected in preschool children as young as three years old. These conditions were identified in 29 students whose parents received referral reports. It is important to diagnose eye problems at an early age because often the conditions can be corrected then. After age seven, it is more likely the problem can be treated but not corrected. The screener was provided by LEEDS (Lions, Eye, Ear, Diabetes Screening). The LEEDS organization is supported by Lions from Colts Neck and other clubs in the area. Lions Andy Lotano, Heather Powell, George Sherwood and John Walsh performed the screening with the school nurses. It is the Lion’s goal to get the screening done in other schools in the area so they can continue to help children receive a diagnosis that can be corrected by a doctor. If you are interested in joining the Colts Neck Lions Club or learning more about the Club, you can attend its next meeting on February 13, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Huddy’s.

“As I complete my term as chair of Riverview Medical Center Foundation’s board of trustees, it gives me such joy to make a meaningful gift to the Giving Heals campaign,” says Mulheren. “Recent growth at the hospital has been significant, including the November 2016 opening of the new cancer care center. Anonymous Foundation,” says Joseph Stampe, regional president and chief development officer of Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations. “She has been a tremendous leader for the Foundation’s board of trustees and truly transforms the way we care for our patients through her philanthropic contributions and dedicated leadership.”
Mulheren, who serves as director of The J.A.M. Anonymous Foundation, established the organization in tribute to her late husband, John, with the mission to continue his philanthropic legacy. Though she transitioned out of her role as chair at the end of 2016, she will continue to serve as a valued member of the Foundation’s board of trustees.
“Nancy’s dedication to enhancing the health care in our local community is immeasurable,” says Timothy Hogan, FACHE, president of Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital. “The entire Mulheren family has a long history with our hospital, and their generosity will continue to have a profound and positive impact on each of our patients for years to come.”

Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations Named “High Performer” by Association for Healthcare Philanthropy Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations, which fundraises for Hackensack Meridian Health’s Monmouth, Ocean, and Middlesex County hospitals, programs and services, has been honored by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) for its exemplary performance in fundraising to enhance health care in the local community. Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations is one of only 51 organizations in the U.S. and Canada to be named a “High Performer,” based on the AHP’s annual benchmarking analysis. High performers are recognized only when they operate in the top 25 percent of all reporting organizations. Each year, participating hospital foundations complete an in-depth survey that includes data such as fundraising revenue, sources and number of gifts, expenses, and employee roles and resources. AHP analyzes the data submitted categorizing high performers through a comparative analysis based on core benchmark indicators such as net fundraising returns, return on investment and cost to raise a dollar. “We are extremely proud to be distinguished as a “High Performer” in health care philanthropy,” explains Joseph Stampe, regional president and chief development officer of Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations. “It’s through

Oak Hill Academy Helps a Fallen Hero During the 15th annual Oak Hill Academy Veteran’s Day Program last November, Mrs. Marion Zilinski, Gold Star Mother of Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II spoke about her son’s service to our country. Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II was a Middletown native, graduate of CBA and West Point and Army Ranger 101st Airborne who lost his life in Iraq in 2005. The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Foundation (http://runwithdennis.org/) provides support and improves the morale of wounded veterans by offering scholarships, donations to service dogs, sending supplies for military working dogs and helping in any other way to ease their transition back into society. At that time, Oak Hill Academy chose to support the foundation through a dress down day with all of the monies going to this worthwhile cause. The response was overwhelming, as a result of Mrs. Zilinski’s very moving and emotional presentation about her son and how his sacrifice as a true hero has brought about such a worthwhile and helpful cause. In fact, when Mrs. Beth Stefko, mother of three Oak Hill boys Ryan (6th), Dylan (3rd) and Ian (1st), returned home that evening she told her husband about the Veteran’s Day program. He was so touched that he shared the story of the K9 Sgt. Denny Project with the CEO of his company, Mr. Spencer Haber. Mr. Haber has established a charitable foundation, the H/3 Foundation, a significant focus of which is to promote animal welfare. The H/3 Foundation decided to donate $5,000 to the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Foundation. Truly incredible! After all donations had been collected, Oak Hill Academy was able to present Mrs. Zilinski with a check for $2,515 in addition to the generous H/3 Foundation donation. Tremendous support during the season of giving! Mr. Joseph Pacelli, Headmaster, and Miss Patrice Murray, Director of Personnel/ Administration, invited Mrs. Zilinski to join them for a small ceremony in the Harkness Room on the campus of Oak Hill Academy. Joining them were Mrs. Beth Stefko and her children, Ryan, Dylan and Ian; Mala (7th) and Shiven (5th) Shah; Student Council President, Sebastian Basile (8th), Jordan Codispoti (8th), and Student Council Moderators, Mrs. Linda Vacca and Mrs. Cynara Savarese. Mr. Pacelli noted that Oak Hill is pleased to support such a worthy cause that assists our servicemen and women. Mrs. Zilinski deserves our respect and gratitude.
Oak Hill Academy Finishes as Top Private/Parochial School at Mathematics Contest Congratulations to the Oak Hill Academy Math team for finishing as the TOP Private/Parochial School and 3rd place overall at the St. Joseph (Metuchen, NJ) High School Mathematics Competition that was held on January 7, 2017. Oak Hill Academy mathematics teacher, Mrs. Janice Palamara, took a group of nine 7th & 8th graders up to Metuchen for their second annual trip to the Middlesex County High School’s competition. The team consisted of seventh graders: Aarya Doshi (Hazlet), Justin Weber (Middletown), Molly Jain (Red Bank), Cakie Dym (Rumson), Elizabeth Wright (Fair Haven), Ansh Kulkarni (Howell), Rahul Kavuru (Holmdel) and Alex Mitchell (Red Bank); and eighth grader, Grant D’Orsi (Leonardo). After the dust settled and all of the totals were calculated, Oak Hill Academy rose above all of the other private and parochial schools to finish third overall. Congratulations were also in order on the individual side as Aarya Doshi finished 6th and Alex Mitchell earned the 4th place award at the St. Joseph Math Contest. This was quite an accomplishment given that 230 students were in the competition from 19 schools. Congratulations to Mrs. Palamara and the Oak Hill Academy students!

“February brings us Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. We may watch something educational on TV, read something about Black American history in school, and share cards, romantic dinners chocolates and roses. What better time than now to engage in activities that ask us to reflect and renew all our relationships with ourselves, our partners, our neighbors and nation,” said Pastor Ford. "Relational work is what life is all about. We always need improvement in this, and on a national level, we are living in a 'teachable moment.' More people, especially White Americans, are ready to take action to dismantle racism. LPC is committed, because Jesus was, to demonstrating love in all ways. Martha Mary Guild to Present “The Greatest Ever: Babe Didrikson Zaharias’ Story” Join the Parish of Saint Mary’s Martha Mary Guild in seeing “Babe Didrikson” come alive right before your eyes on February 8, 2017. Back by popular demand, the multi-talented actor of stage, television, film and commercial productions Linda Kenyon will present “The Greatest Ever: Babe Didrikson Zaharias’ Story.” Born Mildred Ella Didrikson in Texas in 1911, she became America’s greatest female athlete. Nicknamed “Babe” when she was a child, she kept it to remind others of her similarity to “that Babe Ruth fella.” She was an athlete who combined raw talent, hard work, and an unquenchable thirst for winning in a world in which women were not allowed or encouraged to be athletic, competitive, ambitious, or to sweat. Not many years ago this was a revolutionary idea - and Babe led the revolution. In 1953 Babe was diagnosed with cancer. Until she died several years later she publicized her condition, served as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society, and raised millions for cancer research while still competing as a golfer. Here again she was revolutionary because cancer was “just not talked about” in America of the 1950’s. Linda Kenyon has been seen screaming her head off as a society woman in Chris Rock’s movie "Head of State." She appeared in Venus Theatre’s production of "Ugly Duckling" and with the Virginia Shakespeare Company in "Richard III." She has worked with the Washington Stage Guild, Source Theatre, and the Maryland Renaissance Festival. The rosary will be prayed at 11:30 a.m. in Christ Chapel, followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch), and refreshments provided by the Martha Mary Guild. The meeting begins promptly at 12:30 p.m., followed by the program presentation at 12:45 p.m. in Madonna Hall.

CRANMER LEGACY SOCIETY HONORS DONORS WITH NEW SCULPTURE WALL AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER Monmouth Medical Center Foundation recently honored the members of its Cranmer Legacy Society with a donor recognition wall to thank donors and ensure their gifts will be recognized during their lifetime. Benefactors who include Monmouth Medical Center in their estate plans will have their names added to a special donor recognition wall in the main lobby at Monmouth Medical Center, and be inducted into the Cranmer Legacy Society. The Society was established in honor of Ella B. Cranmer, who through her estate made one of the largest gifts in Monmouth Medical Center’s history. “It is a very special person who provides for the future of his or her community. Planned gifts are one of the easiest ways to support the future of this hospital. It’s easier than you think to make a difference and in the process become a member of this very special society,” said Karen Siciliano, Chair of the Cranmer Legacy Society. “And once you see firsthand how your gift touches the lives of others, it’s a reward in itself.” A former Wall Street broker, Siciliano resigned from her lucrative job after two tragedies: the death of her mother due to a misdiagnosis of breast cancer, and the loss of dozens of friends in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She returned to Monmouth County, where she runs her family’s Red Bank-based landscaping company. After going through these tough life experiences, Siciliano learned there’s no better time than now to plan your legacy gift. “Through planned giving, I can take matters into my own hands. My planned gift will provide for everything and everyone that’s important to me.” Looking to pay forward her success, Siciliano honored her mother by planning a legacy gift to Monmouth’s Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center. “As members of the community, we have a responsibility to contribute,” said Siciliano, who also serves on the Board of Trustees of Monmouth Medical Center. “Monmouth’s specialized services for women and children fuel my passion.” For more information, visit www.legacy.vg/monmouthplannedgiving.
