I’m IMPORTANT

I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”

The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

ou wouldn’t know this, but this column is compiled from over a month of reminder texts I send to myself of topics I would like to write about. My hectic life and career can really be overwhelming at times, but I enjoy every minute of it. I spend a lot of time talking to people on a monthly basis, whether it be about their marketing strategies, a great story we need to get in the magazine, or just about their personal lives.

And then it dawned on me, this issue, Community Magazine’s March 2014 edition, is our third anniversary edition. Wow, my mind was blown, to think we are going on our fourth year of business really made me sit back and reflect on the past years at Community Magazine (CM), and years beyond that in the publishing business. It might sound crazy to you, but I started my ‘career’ in the publishing business at the age of 12 with my family, I didn’t know then that I chose my profession so early on in my life. Now in my thirties, I am happy where I am, especially at a magazine that really

is all about the communities we live in (and to boot, really amazing co-workers). I get to meet and socialize with some very interesting human beings, and a lot of characters – and that makes my ‘job’ so worth it! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the communities we deliver to, to all the readers who email us invaluable information and comments on a daily basis to Community Magazine (CM), to all the residents who say we are their “favorite coffee table book” – and most importantly, to all our advertisers - our partners who choose us every month as their marketing vehicle – WE THANK YOU! All my best to you and yours,

Skip the supermarket and cancel the sitter, go ahead and prepare for a dining experience the whole family can enjoy (we’re not joking). We asked our subscribers to vote for their favorite place to take the kiddos for a bite and we’ve put together a list of family friendly restaurants we love. So grab the kiddos and head out for a dinner you’re sure to enjoy while the kids are entertained! These restaurants will welcome your little ones with open arms (yep, really) and let you and your other half enjoy a night out, good food, and maybe even an adult beverage or two!

1. Barnacle Bill’s, Rumson This is hands-down one of everyone’s favorite on the Navesink. Even though it might not have a separate kids’ menu, there are more than enough options from pasta to chicken fingers to please every picky eater. The place has a fun vibe and is loud (translation: no one notices your toddler’s pre-entrée meltdown). The dining room is always full of families, and don’t forget the quarters, the video games will keep them occupied while Mom and Dad sip on a tasty beverage.

2. Pop’s Garage, The Grove West, Shrewsbury Trying to bring family time back to the dinner table, Pops most recently was offering 10% off the bill if you check your mobile phones at the door for a phone-free meal with your loved ones! Pop’s Garage brings the laid-back cuisine and culture of Mexico straight to New Jersey families. They infuse surf, art, culture and community into every delicious bite. They also offer special events specifically for kids from time to time like their sold out kid’s New Year’s Eve Party (which takes place in the afternoon) so be sure to check-in regularly. Oh, and more often than not, you’ll see “Pop” handing out balloons to all of the kiddos at the restaurant. Visit them in Asbury Park or Normandy Beach in the warmer weather months too!

3. Moose’s Tavern, Tinton Falls The Moose is on the loose in Tinton Falls! With a vast burger menu, yummy apps from traditional wings to crab rangoon dip and potstickers and everything in between, you’ll be sure to find something to tickle your taste buds. And the Moose offers a kid’s menus with faves from grilled cheese to chix nuggets, but for the more adventurous eater, it also includes steak, corn dogs and more! Did we mention, all kids meals come with an

10

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

ice cream sundae at the end? And if that’s not enough, join in the fun on Mondays for a special family friendly night dedicated to your pint size friends. There might be face painting, glitter tattoos, balloons and more!

4. New Monmouth Diner, Middletown HulaMoms love taking the family to this traditional diner that serves up a little something extra for the kids. On Monday’s from 5:00 – 8:00p.m. it is character night where your lil ones might just get to meet a princess or someone else magical. The added bonus for getting out on a Monday is that kids eat free with a paying adult. At the end of every meal, kids who did a good job (wink, wink) get to pick a prize out of the “treasure basket”.

5. Molly Maguire’s Gastropub, Rumson This cozy Irish pub has turned into a staple in the two rivers neighborhood. And given the whole pub vibe, most of the food here is appealing to kids, making for a tantrum free meal (hopefully). The wee ones can even choose off of their own menu with some yummy classics like pizza, burgers & dogs, mac n’ cheese and more. There is a lively and family friendly atmosphere with large booths and lots of TVs, which are perfect for corralling and entertaining the tykes.

6. Joe’s Crab Shack, Eatontown Lobsters, Shrimp and Clams oh my! They’ve got all kinds of tasty fish and lots of “clam bake” type steampots to choose from at Joe’s, but don’t worry, if your kids don’t think fish is delish, they have some classic kid faves too! The wait staff will keep your whole clan entertained as they break into song and dance periodically! And stop the presses… they also have an outdoor playground! That’s right grab a table and let your kids play while you sit back and enjoy some grown-up time.

7. Red Oak Diner & Lounge, Hazlet With a kid’s menu and lots of diner staples, the Red Oak is always family friendly, but Tuesday night is definitely kid’s night. Every week from 5:00 – 8:00p.m. a different character pays a visit. From Barbie to Superheroes to Sophia the First, you never know who you’re going to meet! There’s also a family friendly movie playing, as well as popcorn, cookies and balloons for pint size patrons. Oh and did we mention that kids also eat free with a paying adult on Tuesday?

8. Hibachi, various locations Get ready for a hip alternative to chicken fingers and fries with hibachi and sushi! Not only will you get a great meal, but kids will love to sit around the hibachi table and watch the show that the chef puts on, slicing, dicing and doing fun tricks. Some of our favorites include: Kanji, Tinton Falls; Sawa, Eatontown & Pier Village in Long Branch; Fuji, Shrewsbury; and last but not least, Kyoto Sushi & Hibachi, Atlantic Highlands.

9. Shaka, Pier Village, Long Branch Go ahead and kick it Hawaiian style. Your mouths will be watering over the burritos, quesadillas and a trip to Shaka is not complete without the genuine Hawaiian shaved ice. No worries if your little dudes and dudettes aren’t digging the island style meals, they have the traditional mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, etc… Even better to the parents delight, their meals are served with apple slices or baby carrots and tortillas. And note to the ‘rents: Shaka supplies the bucket and ice, but bring your own brew!

10. Bertucci’s, Hazlet Pizza is almost always a hit with the kids and there is no exception to that rule at Bertucci’s. They round out their kid’s menu with offerings that include ravioli, grilled cheese, chicken cutlets and lots of other yum yums! A well-known highlight is that your little guys & gals will be occupied throughout with the piece of dough they get to roll out and play with it! And if you wanna make a day or a night out of it, the Hazlet movie theater is conveniently located in the same parking lot!

DEARBORN MARKET SEARCHES FOR

BEST SUNDAY GRAV Y RECIPE T

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

welve customers shared their special Sunday Gravy recipes during the third annual cooking challenge presented by Dearborn Market on January 26. Previous challenges were best Chicken Soup recipe and last years’ best Chili. Sunday Gravy is most often a homemade tomato meat sauce which has been passed down for generations and best served on Sunday when families come together to enjoy the delicious gravy over mounds of pasta.

Winners of the “Sunday Gravy” Cooking Challenge (Left to right: Lori Carscadden, second place; Joseph Bove, third place; and Gloria Arcuri, first place and Customer’s Choice Award winner.)

Left to right: President of Dearborn Market Frank Luccarelli, First Place and Customer’s Choice Award winner Gloria Arcuri, owner of Anna’ Italian Kitchen Anna Perry, and Coordinator of Bridges Outreach Kathy Logan join together for a photo following the “Sunday Gravy” Cooking Challenge.

The entry fee of those participating in the cooking challenge went directly to Bridges Outreach, a local organization that provides food and clothing to the homeless and displaced in the area. The chefs handed out small samples of their time-honored gravy to customers and many also offered thin slices of fresh crusty bread and sprinklings of cheese. Participants in the Sunday Gravy challenge included Gloria Arcuri, Joseph Bove, Lori Carscadden, Rosemary DiVilio, Paul Eugenio, Matt Giuliano, Catherine Imbesi, Daniel Lamagna, Charles Princiotto, Michael Rosen, Susan Scalice, and Anthony Setaro. Well-qualified taste-testers for the event were President of Dearborn Market Frank Luccarelli, Coordinator of Bridges Outreach Kathy Logan, and owner of Anna’s Italian Kitchen (Middletown) Anna Perry. All customers were asked to vote for Customer’s Choice Award. “It was definitely a challenge for us as judges,” noted Logan. She expressed her gratitude for the year-long support by the Luccarelli family and Dearborn Market and thanked everyone for their generosity in assisting Bridges through their donations. Third place was Joseph Bove of Ocean Township who had made his mother’s recipe. “This was fun and a great community event,” he said. Second place was Lori Carscadden of Keansburg whose recipe was gluten-free, dairy-free and contained chicken – no meat. First place was Gloria Arcuri of Manalapan who used chopped veal seasoned with a low sodium salt. Arcuri also won the Customer Choice Award. Her winning recipe will be featured in the March Almanac at Dearborn Market, and will receive a $100 Dearborn Market gift card.

Most of the “chefs” who participated in the “Sunday Gravy” Cooking Challenge at Dearborn Market on January 26, 2014 gather for a photo after sharing their special recipes with those who attended the event.

12

Entries in the “Sunday Gravy” Cooking Challenge were diversified and some recipes were revamped to meet the needs of anyone wanting a low-sodium, dairy-free recipe. All who participated and attended had a great time.

Holmdel Football Team Chosen To Participate In Pre-Super Bowl Run

he Holmdel football team may forget the date it happened but they will never forget the experience they had on January 31 at MetLife Stadium – home of Super Bowl XLVIII!

Executive Director of Fox Sports Mr. Rich Russo, who directed the Super Bowl, is a Holmdel resident and felt it would be exciting for the football team to fill in for the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos.

Head Coach of the Holmdel football team Frank Papalia explained that every year the television team that does the game has a dry run or dress rehearsal on the Friday before the big game. This allows them to check the audio video feeds, camera and truck equipment, he said. “So this year, Mr. Russo was so kind and asked us to be there. The NFL said that was fine, and we had an unreal experience!” He noted that roughly 50 team members participated, and that they were split into a White and Blue Squad. Holmdel’s Coaching staff also participated, which included Coach Papalia, John Corneliusen, Joe Trezza, William Beining, Colin Hart, Joe Zaccone along with several members of the administration and Holmdel’s TV Production Teacher who filmed it and is making it into a documentary, shared the coach.

Left to right: Holmdel Athletic Director Randy Westrol, Fox Sports Executive Director Rich Russo (who made this great event happen), and Head Football Coach Frank Papalia were just as excited as the team! Photo Credit Coach Frank Papalia

“Basically, we did a dry run of the Super Bowl - just several times! We sat in the tunnel and watched them put it together. The White Team was in the Seattle Tunnel and the Blue Team was in the Denver Tunnel. We got to meet the Seahawk and the Bronco, the actual animals, which was really cool. Next, they put the intro on the big screen, which was seen on Fox, and we ran out through the

14

pyrotechnics, the cheerleaders and the gate. It was really cool. We did that probably four or five times and then we played the “Super Bowl” on the field. We ran plays at each other consisting of Denvers’ Offense and Seattles’ Defense. We ran a pass happy Denver and run happy Seattle. At the same time, the directors gave us some direction of which way they wanted the ball to be thrown; sometimes telling us where to run,” relayed Coach Papalia. They also stayed on while Opera singer Renee Fleming, who would actually sing The National Anthem at the Super Bowl, performed it live that afternoon. “It was amazing standing in as the players, as the film crew filmed us!” said Coach Papalia, who was still thrilled by the opportunity.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

He proudly relayed the compliments received about the Holmdel football team that day. “Our kids were so well behaved and were total gentlemen. People actually remarked that they had handled themselves with class and that they were urgent on the field and helped Fox get their work done, even as we enjoyed it. Every single person there - coach, player, administrator went back to a time when they were a kid and were in awe. We all had fun, and it was simply an experience that we can’t really put into words.”

Everyone involved had an unbelievable day. Coach Papalia summed up the awesome day this way. “But watching the Super Bowl that Sunday, I received a bunch of messages from the kids about how cool it is that they took part in that, helped put it together, and got to run out of the tunnel before even the Seahawks or Broncos did. I could go on and on, but it was truly an amazing time!”

Bob Both of the Jersey Shore Running Club said their group began almost 25 years ago, meeting at a running store in Downtown Red Bank. The JSRC now has over 1,000 members.

“We’ve been faced with a couple challenges due to the hurricanes, but we seem to work around that,” Both said. The group participates in group runs and statewide races, as well as running their own charitable events such as the Run-A-Palooza in Asbury Park. Last year the club raised $15,000 for Sandy Relief, and another $50,000 for the Special Olympics of New Jersey. “When we first started, we had maybe 20 or 30 members. Then, we just grew and grew,” Both said. The Jersey Shore Running Club meets for regular runs in Middletown, Long Branch and Belmar, and now has between 1,200 and 1,500 members in Monmouth County. Membership is $15 for one year and $42 for three years, with an added bonus of member discounts for area businesses like The Running Store in Shrewsbury. The JSRC will host Run-A-Palooza on April 26 in Asbury Park. More information about the club and a race schedule can be found at www. jsrc.org. Photos courtesy of The Jersey Shore Running Club.

It is a community-wide planning process that strives to create a caring, supportive environment and more open communication between youths and adults.” They are hosting a number of fundraising events including a charity basketball game on March 11, 2014 (please visit www.cnhsptso. org/joomla for more information and opportunities to donate). ne of the Monmouth County’s premiere business events of the season is the annual CNBA Luncheon held at Trump National Golf Club. This year’s event will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Businesses from Colts Neck and surrounding areas come to celebrate stories of success and spend quality time at one of New Jersey’s most prestigious venues. Mark your calendar, as this event sold-out two weeks in advance last year and promises to be even more impactful in 2014! The CNBA is inviting sponsors for this well-heeled and well-attended event – please visit the CNBA website for details. Thank you to Monica Vermeulen for organizing our annual 2013 Colts Neck Holiday Window Painting event with the students of Colts Neck High School. This year’s winners are: 1st Place:Emily Jacoby and Leona Kang (Capital Paint Center) 2nd Place: Abby Letson, Anthony Gargiulo, Elissa Scano, Nicole Sperling and Taylor Urso (Becker Hardware) 3rd Place: Cara Bieber and Nada ElAwdan (DeFalco Realty)

A very special thank you to our cadre of artistic judges for their time and talent in evaluating the entire field of entrants - Jerry Amos of Jerry Amos Photography, Dan Fenski of Windsor Gallery and Carolyn Burtnick of Community Magazine. This year, the CNBA is a proud sponsor and supporter of PROJECT GRADUATION. Project Graduation is a program offered by Colts Neck High School, in which organized, adult-supervised and alcohol-free activities are offered as part of a post-graduation party, in lieu of student-run events with alcohol or drugs. The event lasts through the night, and is held at iPlay America in Freehold. Students are checked for illicit substances before entry and are carefully monitored - it essentially becomes a school-wide “sleepover”. The primary goal is to increase awareness of the dangers of drinking, drugging and driving and to reduce the number of youth involved in alcohol and other drug-related highway crashes. Across the country, Project Graduation and the chemical-free celebrations it inspired are the new tradition for graduating seniors. What makes Project Graduation different is the attitude of the students. They have made a

On January 28, The CNBA hosted its quarterly networking business card exchange event at Orlando’s Restaurant & Pizzeria on Route 34 in Colts Neck. Braving the cold, over 60+ new and existing members exchanged ideas and energy at one of the most successful events to date. The CNBA welcomed newcomers Nutritional Wellness (Adria Rothfeld) and Snack Revolution (Robert Pastor). A special thank you to Mario Venturini and Luigi (Gino) Schiano di Cola for hosting a great event and providing the crowd with delicious food, as well as their hospitality and good company. The CNBA supported the Colts Neck Fire Department and Colts Neck First Aid Squad at their Annual Pancake Breakfast on February 22 at the Colts Neck Community Church – a good time was shared for a great cause. Each month at the CNBA General Meeting, a guest speaker informs and educates the filled room with items and topics relevant to businesses large and small. This is done to add value and always makes for interesting discussion and Q&A. This month’s speaker was CNBA Vice President Gregory Calderaro of Morgan Stanley, who shared his insight and experience as a 20 year veteran in owning a small business. Greg addressed the adversities and endless challenges that ultimately fuel the rewards of entrepreneurial spirit. He also spoke about how “business today is personal” as well as some of the financial planning and creative financing options available in today’s economy and marketplace. Judging by the audience reaction and comments – it was a valuable and enjoyable topic. If you are interested in becoming a member - CNBA Membership dues for 2014 are only $50 and can be paid online at www.ColtsNeckBusiness.org. The CNBA sponsors the Annual Colts Neck Map and the three seasonal mailers which are distributed to all the residents in the town, as well as to visitors and customers of local establishments. It serves as a directory of the myriad of goods and services available from members of the CNBA in and around Colts Neck. The Colts Neck Business Association welcomes all to our General Meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the Colts Neck Public Library (1 Winthrop Road - behind Town Hall). The CNBA is led by; President Anna Appolonia of Heritage House Sotheby’s Realtors Vice Presidents Gregory Calderaro of Morgan Stanley & Carolyn Burtnick of Community Magazine, Secretaries Patty Vollherbst of Colts Neck Computing & Alison Antenucci of Burns Brothers Custom Carpentry and Treasurer David Sokoler of Merandex Technology Solutions. midst the displays of beautiful orchids set up for the annual Deep Cut Orchid Society show held in the greenhouse of Dearborn Market, the Luccarelli family and guests welcomed the Frances Foundation on February 8. Over 150 guests attended the fifth annual “An Evening to Benefit the Frances Foundation” and enjoyed wine, gourmet cheese, and light hors d’oeuvres, while a live harpist set the tone with soft music. This event is very dear to the hearts of the Luccarelli family, who have been working with the organization since it was first established by the Heugle family of Holmdel. The Luccarelli family has produced several fundraising events for the Frances Foundation in past years. With this event, $25 of the $40 ticket purchased was given directly to the Foundation.

help.” He reemphasized the Foundation’s mission of bringing smiles to kids fighting cancer through a special gift or gesture; of providing financial assistance to families in need due to their child’s fight against cancer. Two significant speakers shared a few words with guests. Mae Beggs, whose daughter Madison, known affectionately as “Maddie,” passed away in 2012 said, “The Frances Foundation was a big help to our family. Anything we needed they were there for us.” Maddie was able to attend a Broadway play and take a trip to Hawaii. Mae is now on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Mae also has held a soccer tournament and raised $10,000 which she donated to the Frances Foundation.

Parents and family members of children whose lives have been celebrated in special ways by the Frances Foundation were acknowledged. Holmdel Kiwanis members as well as Freeholder Serena DiMaso and Holmdel Superintendent of Schools Barbara Duncan also attended the event. President of Dearborn Market Frank Luccarelli said, “This is a great cause and we are honored to be a part of the Frances Foundation as well as provide our support of them.”

Lauren Pericone spoke of her boyfriend Nicholas Vega, who passed away July, 2013. The Frances Foundation sent Nick and Lauren on a special sweetheart day cruise – a memorable day that Lauren said was filled with love. She likened Nick to an angel and felt he spread his wings over her when he died. The loving support she received from the Frances Foundation, as well as the love of Nick has changed her. “I give more love now because of what I have received,” she said. Lauren is now a Junior Board of Trustee with the Foundation.

President and Executive Director of the Frances Foundation Robert “Bob” Heugle, Jr. shared, “It may be cold outside but in here it is so warm and beautiful thanks to the Luccarelli family and all of you. Your support makes it meaningful for the kids we

Bob Heugle said, “The kids we help are an inspiration us and give us the most powerful smiles! We greatly appreciate all of your support.”

Keeping Your Pet at a Healthy Weight By: Kirsty Oliver, VN, DipAVN (surgical), CVT, CCRP, CVPP

O

verweight pets are not an uncommon sight these days. Pets are prone to gaining weight just like their human companions. As pets age, changes in metabolism, lifestyle, and dietary needs can all contribute to weight gain. Most overweight pets gradually become less active, leading to a decrease in joint range of motion, lean muscle mass, and cardiovascular fitness. As weight increases, so does the stress and strain on the joints and organs, leading to lethargy, exercise intolerance, stiffness, joint discomfort, and further weight gain. These symptoms are seen in both dogs and cats. Osteoarthritis is also seen in overweight pets. The additional weight placed on joints, along with hormones contained in fat cells which release inflammatory mediators, can preempt arthritic changes within the joints. All of this can lead to pain, discomfort, and a loss of joint range of motion. So what can we do? Weight loss is key. It’s important to discuss, with your veterinarian, what changes need to be made to your pet’s diet, as well as rule out any underlying medical conditions that may require additional diagnostic testing and medication. The next step is to begin gently remobilizing your pet. Studies have shown that physical rehabilitation, along with a calorie controlled diet, provide improved weight loss and improved mobility. Most physical rehabilitation facilities offer weight management programs. These programs include thermotherapy (application of heat and ice), passive range of motion, massage, aquatic therapy, therapeutic laser, and acupuncture, all designed to help get pets back on their feet. Therapeutic laser and acupuncture are also highly beneficial in dogs and cats to help control the pain and inflammation associated with arthritic joints. Since most overweight pets are unable to walk for long periods of time, aquatic therapy is a perfect way to begin a fitness program, even for some cats. By adjusting the water level, pets are able to exercise in an almost weightless environment, which dramatically reduces the amount of pressure placed on their joints. An underwater treadmill also helps improve joint range of motion. This type of gentle therapy is an effective way to reintroduce exercise to your pet and kick start weight loss. An individually tailored rehabilitation program allows pet owners to be actively involved in their pet’s journey to weight loss and recovery. Involving a veterinary team allows your pet’s progress to be monitored and adjusted, as needed, to maintain your pet’s safety and comfort during the weight loss process. Physical rehabilitation is not limited to pets that need help with weight loss, however. Normally active pets that become housebound due to inclement weather can also benefit from a visit to the "gym". Maintenance programs can combat the winter blues and help keep lean muscle mass in both the professional and amateur canine "athlete". Whether your canine companion is recovering from surgery, in need of losing a few pounds, or hoping to win gold at the next canine Olympics, your physical rehabilitation team will tailor a program based on their needs & goals and help them live and perform at their individual best. *Article was submitted by Red Bank Veterinary Hospital Center for Integrative Veterinary Medicine, they are located at 210 Newman Springs Road in Red Bank, NJ 07701 and can be reached at 732.747.3383.

Scrapbooking For A Cause Benefits

Alex’s Lemonade Stand

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

H

olmdel resident Karen Salerno held her third scrapbooking for a cause event, “Lemonade Crop 2014” on February 8 at the Holmdel Community/ Senior Center to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), which raises awareness and money for pediatric cancer research. ALSF shares the vision of its young founder and creator, Alexandra “Alex” Scott, diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday. At the age of four, she set up a front-yard lemonade stand and planned to give the money she earned to doctors to help them find a cure. With the help of her brother Patrick, Alex’s first lemonade stand raised the incredible amount of $2,000 in one day. Alex inspired others to start lemonade stands and they donated the proceeds to her cause. In 2004, Alex passed away at the age of eight; her parents started ALSF in 2005 to continue the work started by Alex. ALSF has now raised more than $70 million! They also fund more than 300 research projects across the country. Karen Salerno knows firsthand the importance of ALSF. Her inspiration for holding “Lemonade Crop 2014” is her son Tony, who was diagnosed in June 2006 with Stage IV High Risk Neuroblastoma; the same kind of cancer as Alexandra Scott, who started Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Today Tony is ten-years-old and has been cancer-free for 7 years. In fact, Tony has become quite the spokesman for Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the area and throughout New Jersey. Karen gives back by holding events and works tirelessly to make others aware of ALSF. She noted that currently, all types of childhood cancer combined receive only 4 percent of US Federal Funding cancer research. “This is a great event for friends and members of other communities to enjoy a fun, informal day and help to raise funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. I have held three of these

24

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

scrapbooking events but this is my first in Holmdel,” shared Salerno. Fifty-two women registered for the event. Salerno provided snacks and lunch, which was catered by Bianca Mackey, owner of White Olive Catering. Local businesses, scrapbook companies, and individuals donated items that made up the 31 baskets raffled off throughout the day. Scrapbooking, a fun, creative way to preserve personal and family history, is a popular pastime. It can be a basic picture and caption album, or it can be pages designed and embellished with glitter, printed media, artwork, and extensive journal entries. A special table, “Scraps of Kindness,” was filled with items the scrapbookers no longer needed. Anyone who wanted to exchange an item they had for one on the table could make a cash donation - another way of helping to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Salerno explained that at the end of the event whatever is left on the table is donated to the Art therapy program at the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. Assisting Salerno with the event were students from W. R. Satz and Holmdel High School, whose help earned them community service hours. Friends Debbie Brew and Lori Umbrino helped Salerno by selling gift auction tickets and organizing the student volunteers. “I want to thank Holmdel Township for donating the use of this room to us. And thanks to those who have donated basket items for the event. Everyone has been very generous!” she said. The full day event raised just over $2,770, which will be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Visit www. alexslemonade.org for more information.

Holmdel Theatre Company (HTC) is pleased to announce its spring 2014 show, Moliere’s rollicking farce, The Imaginary Invalid, opening March 28, 2014 and running through April 12, 2014. The show is produced by HTC’s Geoff Shields and Grace Modla, and helmed by veteran director Tom Frascatore. Frascatore brought HTC’s acclaimed production of Inherit the Wind to the Duncan Smith stage, and his innovative theatrical style has made him a Monmouth County favorite. Imaginary Invalid brings together an eclectic troupe of comedy specialists to skewer the timeless absurdities of “health care,” with titular hypochondriac, Monsieur Argan, his mercenary wife, scheming household, and the quacks who seek to “relieve” him of his fortune. As ever, the HTC cast includes a lively mix of seasoned professionals, area veterans and talented young actors drawn from local middle and high schools. Award winning playwright Constance Congdon (Last of the Formicans) provides a wildly funny, utterly accessible, modern adaptation for Frascatore and his expert cast of knockabouts to feast upon. Congdon’s Invalid was commissioned by the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and has had successful runs at ACT, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and Portland Center Stage. The cast features: Carlole Darche, Topher J. Friedel, Michael Hegarty, Dan Johnson, Michael J. Kroll, Jon Nielson, Rose Pedone, Ava Serene Portman, Ruby Riggio, Bill Rogers and Wes Swan. Performances run Fridays and Saturdays, March 28, 29 & April 4, 5, 11 & 12 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday matinees on March 30 & April 6 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now via the HTC website at www.holmdeltheatrecompany.org. This program is made possible in part by the Monmouth County Arts Council through the funding of the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, through the County Historical Commission, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, A Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The New Year Resolution Business Networking and Red Carpet Event, organized by Jersey Shore Premiere Events, took place on February 4, 2014 at Coach’s Restaurant in Oakhurst. The event was hosted by Rosa Davis and Chris Fotache and attended by almost 180 guests, mostly local small business owners. The goal was to bring local entrepreneurs together, in order to strengthen the business community and kick start their resolutions for 2014. Part of the proceeds, as well as the toy drive, benefited The Ashley Lauren Foundation, a Colts Neck-based charity whose mission is to provide hope and help to children in New Jersey with cancer through financial, material, and emotional support. Colts Neck Troop 290 Kicked Off New Year with Eagle Scout Court of Honor and Weekend Camping Trip STORY & PHOTO ANU AHLUWALIA

The first thing to happen in January was Dan Bisogni’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Eagle Scout is highest award which a Scout can receive. On the average only about 4 percent of the Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout. The ceremony reflected Dan’s accomplishments, dedication and hard work. To become an Eagle Scout, one must progress through all the ranks, complete 21 merit badges, serve actively in the Troop and carry out a community service project, such as restoring a trail or building benches at a park. The Troop 290 congratulates Dan on his achievement and hope many more Scouts will be inspired by his accomplishments. A weekend camping trip to Winterburg at Forestburg Scout Reservation in New York was held in January 2014 Left to right: Mr. Lelesi congratulates Dan Bisogni for attaining rank of Eagle Scout at the Court of Honor. as well. The Scouts spent the weekend hiking, practicing shooting at the gun range where they shot .22 caliber rifles. Many scouts also enjoyed walking over the frozen lake, a rare opportunity for most scouts in Colts Neck. At the end of the day, Scouts went to a bonfire where they participated and enjoyed skits. Troop 290 had a great month starting with celebrating Eagle Court of Honor and spending a fun weekend at Winterburg. In the coming months, the Scouts will be participating in the district-wide Klondike event, Cub Scout Pack 90 Cross Over, ski trip, and much more. Upcoming trips in 2014 include the use of a real flight simulator in March, a camping trip to Gettysburg in April, a camping trip to the State Police Camporee in May, white water rafting in June and summer camp in July! Boy Scouts is for boys 11-17 years old. For more information, contact Join@Troop290.com. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, send an email to nancystraub@ verizon.net and the folks at Pack 90 will get in touch.

What is the holiday of Purim?

The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year after sundown on March 15, 2014 and ends at nightfall on March 16, 2014. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.” The name of the holiday, Purim, literally means “lots,” for Haman determined the day of the annihilation by drawing a lottery. It is observed by public readings of the Megillah, or Scroll of Esther, to recount the story of the Purim miracle, sending food gifts to friends, giving gifts of money to the poor and enjoying a festive Purim meal.

COLTS NECK WOMAN’S

Journey to Cancer-free STORY SUSAN MURPHY

Screenings for specific cancers at certain ages are stressed by health professionals, the media, even by friends and family. Unfortunately, many Americans put off their testing due to the way the test is administered; the discomfort of most tests; and most of all – the fact that the time necessary for the test just doesn’t fit into their schedule. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Colts Neck resident Michele Battista would like to share how one such screening saved her life. This cancer survivor, who will celebrate her two-year cancerversary on March 1, was diagnosed with colon cancer after her first – yes, first! – colonoscopy at age 50 in February 2012. She emphasizes that there were no prior symptoms. “My gastroenterologist said I had the cancerous tumor for five to ten years and the tumor was close to causing an obstruction, which would have landed me in the emergency room,” explained Battista. Things moved rather quickly after that day in February, and the surgery was set for March 1, 2012 at Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania (Penn Medicine) in Philadelphia. Battista found out there was cancer in six of her lymph nodes. Her cancer was Stage 3 because it had gone beyond the colon and into the lymph nodes. This required her to do adjuvant Chemotherapy, she said.

Colts Neck resident Michele Battista raises both arms in victory showing her two fingers of both hands which signify she has been cancer-free for two years as of March 1, 2014.

Battista was, of course, devastated and emphasized that no one should have to hear the words cancer and chemotherapy twice in a month’s time! Attempting to maintain a bit of humor, she said, “I couldn’t even get wasted away in Margaritaville!” Though she tried to be positive, the reality of the situation made her numb. She recalls the enormous anxiety she felt going into her first chemotherapy treatment and the major concerns about medical expenses. Having her family near helped. Her son Tom, who had left college early for his spring break, joined her husband Joe at the hospital on the day of the surgery to offer support. Her husband took her to all the necessary appointments prior to surgery, as well as staying in a nearby hotel while she was in the hospital. “Joe drove me to all my scans and checkups up until March 2013. I started driving myself after that in order to

reclaim my life back somewhat. You never go back to what you were Before Cancer (BC), but you learn to find yourself in the new you. You learn that you can’t do Cancer alone. You find you need to thank your family and friends for their prayers and support and for picking you up when you have a pity party,” she shared honestly. Battista said one week after finishing treatment she developed neuropathy, when her hands and feet began to tingle. Through research, she found a free 12-week exercise program known as LIVESTRONG at The Community YMCA Family & Wellness Center in Red Bank. Designed to help cancer survivors, and those who have had surgery, chemotherapy or radiation, it showed her how to build her strength, balance and endurance through exercise. She followed the program, which allowed her to go at her own pace, with instruction, from January to April 2013. She noted that she has been mentioned in 2013 monthly and annual reports for the Community YMCA; and sometime this year will be showcased in their fundraising campaign using brochures/video for the LIVESTRONG program in Red Bank. Battista said everything connected with having cancer can be very frightening and difficult to deal with. “I won’t deny that I had a pity party a couple of times when the going got tough. But through it all, I proved the tough get going!” She added that there is a certain mindset for getting through it all and how important it is to stay positive. Her regime included eating more vegetables and less sweets, and exercising when possible. “You have to stay active so I began by walking a little at a time.” Showing her humorous side, Battista gives this example of herself before and after cancer. “I used to be the Energizer Bunny but now I’m more like the Tortoise.” She recently started acupuncture two to three times a week. And she started working in December 2013 for Velankani Communications Technologies in a consulting position as a Business Analyst in the Telecom Industry. When her friend, who is CEO of the company, asked if she wanted to go back to work, Battista said she quickly replied “Yes!” She explained the need to maintain some normalcy. “I am grateful for the opportunity to regain my confidence back in the work force, as cancer tends to destroy everything about you.” Battista has kept busy reaching out to others and addressing awareness of colon cancer and the importance of getting a colonoscopy. She has asked Colts Neck Mayor Russell Macnow to proclaim March 2014 as Colorectal Cancer

Awareness Month and sent a similar request to Governor Chris Christie. Battista has asked Ann Hagar of Mulberry Market in Colts Neck to make up blue bows that can be placed around the town hall during March. There will also be a display regarding cancer in general during March at the Colts Neck Library. Battista has written several articles on her fight against colon cancer; participated in an American Cancer Society Survivorship Workshop online; blogged about her experience on two sites in order to help others; and participated in the Jersey Shore Undy 5000 which is sponsored by the Colon Cancer Alliance, where she ranked ninth overall for fundraising and her team, Red Bank Gastros, ranked tenth overall. She is now planning for the 2014 Undy 5000 at Jersey Shore in Long Branch. A normal day for Battista is very different today than it was early in 2012. She celebrates every day; tries not to sweat the small stuff; and maintains her sense of humor. Cancer delivers a strong, not-to-be-ignored message, and forces you to make changes. “You learn to take things in stride as much as possible.” When asked if there was one word that might sum up her outlook these days she said awareness. This she hopes will make a difference in the statistics surrounding colorectal cancer. “Awareness so as not to have colon cancer be the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States or that one in 20 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer in their lifetime. That ratio is way too high for me, and should hopefully motivate people to get screened.” Battista noted that she has a few friends who were diagnosed with breast cancer and appreciates painting the town pink for it. “But right now painting the town blue is my priority.” She also admits to paying more attention to the little things in life these days. “I ask my neighbors how they are doing or ask if they need any help. I don’t need a lot of things anymore and I donate more to charities that support cancer patients.” If the snowy weather gives way to clearer skies and warmer temperatures, Battista said she would like to celebrate her two-year cancerversary with some friends, maybe at lunch, at Happy Hour, or even a local winery tour. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Be aware. Take charge of your health. Schedule a Colonoscopy – remember sometimes there may not be any symptoms!

Young Holmdel Skier Wins First Place In Vermont Race STORY SUSAN MURPHY

N

ine-year-old Carly Harris, who has been racing for three years, placed first in her division at the NASTAR Eastern Championships, and was the Overall Female winner at the Eastern Championships at Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont during the weekend of January 31 through February 2. This third grader who attends Holmdel Village School absolutely loves to ski! When asked how she would describe the feeling of skiing for fun Carly answered, “Thrilling, exciting, and it makes you feel free!” She started to ski for fun at age four with her father Ken and twin brother Ryan. When her younger brother Jake turned three, he also began skiing with them. Carly trains every weekend, both Saturday and Sunday during the winter months with the Blue Mountain Race Team in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. This is Carly’s third season training with the race team; both of her brothers are also on this team. Carly’s training sessions involve working with her coach on improving her skiing and racing skills, speed, and gate training. Carly also competes at races both at Blue Mountain and at other mountains on days that races are held, although a race is not held every weekend. Carly described how she feels when skiing in a competition. “It makes me feel jittery, even though I know I will do fine.” And she definitely does do fine! In fact, Carly has qualified every year since 2012 to compete in the National Championship held in Colorado. She has not as yet gone there to compete. At the NASTAR Eastern Championships there was also a separate Family/Friends Team race and the Harris Family competed. The race took into account the combined race times of Carly’s father Ken and her brother Ryan. In the race, Ryan got a Platinum medal, Carly got another Gold medal, and Ken got a Bronze medal. This put the Harris Family in fifth place overall. When Carly won first place, she was ecstatic. “I felt like I was queen of the skiing world. I felt excited and thought this was a big achievement.” Her parents Ken and Meka shared, “We were so proud of Carly, but most of all we really enjoyed seeing how excited she was. She skied all the way back to where we were staying, holding her heavy trophy the whole way.” Her mother

Carly Harris (on podium in the middle) who was the Overall Gold Winner, standing behind her is A.J. Kitt, a four-time Olympian skier, who was the NASTAR Pacesetter and Presenter of Awards. added, “She was so excited to show it to me.” Carly’s parents shared, “Carly is a fun-loving adventurous kid, and really enjoys being part of a ski team. She also likes skiing in the terrain park and doing moguls.” Carly has a goal for the future that definitely includes skiing. “I want to be in the Olympics and win a gold medal, or at least a silver.” This young but seasoned and very wise young lady offered this to any young person who wants to learn to ski or compete. “If someone wanted to learn to ski, I would tell them that they would fall a lot at first, but gradually get better, and maybe win medals – and to never give up. If someone wanted to compete, I would tell them not to feel bad if they didn’t get medals the first few races until they got better – then they could win a silver or gold medal!”

ak Hill Academy’s Student Council oversees many activities for students at the school to help those who are less fortunate. It is extremely important and beneficial for the students to be given opportunities where they help individuals who come from different and often difficult walks of life. Back in the fall the students held a schoolwide rally and participated in the Red Bank CROP Hunger Walk. This was quickly followed by a drive at the time of Veterans’ Day to help the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. During the holiday season, the Student Council held a food and gift drive in which students donated thoughtful items to brighten the lives of others. Pre-K and Kindergar-

Through their monthly “Dress-Down-for-a-Dollar Days”, the OHA Student Council has raised money to support many charitable organizations such as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the Eastern Samar Red Cross to help Philippine Typhoon victims, the American Heart Association, and the March of Dimes. In addition, through the Student Council many students at Oak Hill were able to send holiday cards to soldiers. Each year they sponsor a young boy from Danita’s Orphanage in Haiti. Each spring the Student Council reads to children at the Monmouth Day Care Center in Red Bank and donates books to the center. These experiences have allowed the students at Oak Hill Academy to grow into thoughtful individuals who are not only aware of the difficulties families go through, but how to help others and put someone else’s needs before themselves.

The Girl Scout leaders noted that the cars were started during a meeting when each girl was provided a copy of the Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations, and shown how the car must be made in order to race it in the Derby. The girls began their creations from a block of wood – as do the boys - during a meeting and were then able to take them home to complete their designs. A race was held using only the ten cars made by the Girl Scouts and their speed time was recorded. The girls were also included in the Overall Trophy categories for the Derby of which there were three – Built for Speed, Most Creative, and Best Design. Both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby cars were considered for these awards. Mary Pappagallo won Built for Speed and Lauren Rauso won Best Design. Lincroft Girl Scout Troop 635 were excited to participate in the Pinewood Derby with Boy Scout Pack 210 and to have the opportunity to design, make and paint race cars that revealed their creativity and talents. It was something they will always remember.

“Squad 18-21, You’re Needed for a Call”

HOLMDEL FIRST AID SQUAD The rhythmic alert tones command attention.

For the Record

This is the first sound a responder hears. The police dispatcher’s voice immediately follows: “Squad 18-21, you’re needed for a call.” Within minutes, a volunteer crew is enroute to Holmdel’s first aid buildings, one strategically located at Crawford Corners Road, the other at Centerville Road. The crew members quickly mobilize, and navigate the ambulance to the scene of the emergency. Holmdel First Aid Squad (HFAS) is in service, privileged and proud to provide assistance, free of charge, to their neighbors in need for more than 40 years.

The dedication of HFAS members is inspiring. These individuals manage to serve the community, while juggling careers, higher education, and family commitments. The squad wishes to gratefully acknowledge the support, patience, and understanding of their families. Five members each participated in over 300 calls for 2013. Leading the effort, with a record 611 calls, was Robert Bliss. Following was Angelo DeRosa (404), Lourdes Alcaraz (374), Evelyn Puig (353), and Andrew Ming (352). Four members answered more than 200 calls each: Matthew Staniforth, Chris Trischitta, Serena DiMaso, and Lauren Reidy. Additionally, responding to 100+ calls were Paul Fellingham, Kyle McCartney, Sherwin Shahraray, Candace Stefflre, Lynn Davis, Mike Nikolis, Ali Daneshmand, John Page, Sheng Chi Wu, and Leo Pudlo.

Emergency Calls The caller urgently dials 911, and is reassured that help is on the way. HFAS members are trained and prepared to handle each emergency, including medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and fire support. Community residents may be interested to know that Holmdel First Aid does not bill for its services, while providing the equivalent capability and certification of other local paid basic life support (BLS) services. In 2013, HFAS responded to a total of 1,508 emergencies, an average of 4-5 calls per day, resulting in transporting more than 1,100 patients to area hospitals. Additionally, the squad takes pride in assisting with seven CPR saves this past year. Members Holmdel First Aid Squad has 28 active members, which include State and Nationally certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) and trained First Responder Drivers. Starting off the New Year, the annual Officer’s Installment Ceremony was held on January 11, 2014 at Dearborn Farms, Holmdel. AT THE MOVIES

“In Hollywood, an equitable divorce settlement means each party getting fifty percent of the publicity.” Lauren Bacall, movie actress. It’s Academy Awards season. What better time to see how movies have handled divorce through the years? A popular topic since the advent of silent movies, A Bill of Divorcement (1922) was one of the first. Ten years later the remake starred John Barrymore and Katherine Hepburn and sound. The movie made Hepburn an instant star. Divorce movies-comedies, dramas, foreign filmshave been made by the dozens in the decades since. They have covered custody battles, fights over property, anger and revenge-just about everything divorcing couples fight about. In 1961 the Italians took a turn in Divorzio All Italiana. Marcello Mastrioani concocted an intricate plan to divorce his wife so he could marry his much younger and prettier cousin. It didn’t end up the way he had planned. Debbie Reynolds and Dick Van Dyke teamed up in a silly comedy in Divorce American Style (1967), an enjoyable example of why Reynolds and Van Dyke were so popular during the 60s and 70s. Things started to get more serious in the ensuing decades. Kramer v. Kramer (1979) starred Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep in an emotional battle over their young son. It won five Oscars and poignantly captured the impact of adult anger on

children. Young Billy (played by eight year old Justin Henry) will tug at your heart strings. Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas went to battle in the War of the Roses (1989). A comedy? A drama? A realistic look at divorce? Probably all three. This dark comedy depicts the lengths (depths?) to which some people will go to win. I Am Sam (2001), although technically not about divorce, explores the love between a learning disabled father (Sean Penn) and his young daughter (Dakota Fanning) and his battle against a state agency’s efforts to take her away from him simply because he is disabled. The love between father and daughter and their sometime role reversals due to their intellectual differences makes I Am Sam among the best films of that decade. The soundtrack of Beatles’ cover songs is equally well done. The 2012 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film, A Separation was made in Iran, centers on the travails of an unhappy Iranian couple grappling with all the same issues American couples deal with, and proves that people are people all around the world. Languages, culture and governments may be different, but people are people. Take time out-see a movie. “Dahling, I am an excellent housekeeper. Every time I get divorced, I keep the house.” Zsa Zsa Gabor, movie actress.

“The Tale of the Three Trees” is a deeply moving story based on an American folk tale and set to music. It captures a message of Jesus in a way that is both fresh and timeless. Three trees, high on a hill, dream of what they’ll become. They dream of becoming big, important, and admired objects: a treasure chest, a king’s sailing ship, and a tall tree that will point people’s gaze to heaven. They’re all cut down and made into mundane objects, which greatly disappoints them. THEN Jesus is born, and they realize their dreams, but in ways they never expected. This intergenerational cantata will involve members of our congregation from age 4 to adults in music, drama and visual arts. All are welcome to join us in worship on Sunday, March 23 at 9:15 or 11:00 a.m. as we present “The Tale of the Three Trees.” Childcare is available for infants up to age two. A family room is also available for parents with ‘fussy’ children – the worship services are simulcast to this room. The church is located at 72 County Road 537 West in Colts Neck (1/4 mile west of Route 34). Visit them on the web at www.coltsneckreformed.org.

MANAGING PAIN WITH ALTERNATIVE THERAPY Alan Ng grew up in Holmdel and now has his own pain management practice in the area.

D

r. Alan Ng grew up in Holmdel, leaving only for medical school in Cleveland. Now he’s back, planting his roots in the area with a new private practice focused on pain management and alternative therapies. “If people can manage pain without going overboard, I think we’d all be better off,” Ng said. Interventional Spine and Pain Associates opened in December on North Beers Street in Holmdel. After medical school and residency in Cleveland, where he focused on pain rehabilitation, Ng returned to New Jersey for a brief time in Eatontown where he joined a larger practice. Now, Ng said he is finally doing things his way. With a smaller practice and patient-focused care, Ng said he is striving to bring a more conservative and alternative approach to pain management. “We have the luxury of spending as much time as necessary to answer questions,” Ng said. “Our understanding of pain has evolved a lot. Pain medications, very generally speaking, have a lot more scrutiny these days. I think there are patients who will benefit from alternative or adjunctive therapies.” Ng is becoming certified in acupuncture for pain, something he’d like to offer his patients in the next few months. The Holmdel-based practice may also offer Tai Chi classes in the future, an art Ng said helped him de-stress during medical school. “That kind of thing kept me sane while I was in medical school. I was heavily into martial arts. There’s evidence that Tai Chi is good fall prevention and pain intervention,” Ng said. The doctor said he wants to offer a small practice feel, spending as much time with each patient as necessary while offering alternatives and options to each patient. “We take the time to explain things,” Ng said. “I think we’re pretty conservative when it comes to pain medications, we look at alternative therapies.”

Monmouth County SPCA Valentine’s Brunch

All They Need Is Love Raises $30,000

L

ove was in the air once again at the Monmouth County SPCA Valentine’s Brunch. The yearly event was held at McLoone’s Pier House at Pier Village, Long Branch on February 9. With or without a sweetheart, this event is a great way to share your love with the homeless animals of the Monmouth County SPCA (MCSPCA). This year’s sold out brunch was the MCSPCA’s biggest and best yet, raising more than $30,000 for the animals in their care. The event also raised awareness for the MCSPCA Pittie Project, a program dedicated to getting into communities and offering support and education to help reduce the number of pit bulls in the shelter. Currently the program has spayed/neutered over 300 pit bulls and pit bull mixes in the Monmouth County area through the Pittie Project. The event honored longtime Monmouth County SPCA employee Dennis Bailey. Dennis retired after 48 years of laughs, lasting memories and lives saved. “Whenever I go in Monmouth County and mention the MCSPCA, the first

question I receive is about Dennis. It’s no wonder as he has represented the heart and soul of this organization for almost five decades,” remarked Jerry Rosenthal, MCSPCA President and CEO. Emceeing the brunch was 95.9 The Rat’s Jimmy Steal. There was a huge chance auction with incredible prizes for people and their pets and plenty of other surprises! The Melissa Chill Duo with Rob Dye performed live for all in attendance. 50-50 tickets were purchased prior to or during the Brunch for $10 each. The grand prize winner was drawn on February 10 at the MCSPCA Homeward Bound Adoption Center in Eatontown. The winner walked away with over $12,000 and donated a portion back to the animals in need at the MCSPCA. To learn more about the Monmouth County SPCA, the Pittie Project or to find your next furry friend, please visit www.monmouthcountyspca.org or call 732.542.0040.

S A I N T L E O T H E G R E AT Takes Future City Contest Award

STORY: ANGELA MANSOUR PHOTOS: JAIRO ESTEBAN

n Saturday, January 18, Saint Leo the Great School Engineering Club students entered Rutgers University’s Student Center in Livingston to compete in the Future City Contest. The Future City Contest is an annual competition organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers and is held during National Engineers Week. The contest required middle school students to design a virtual future city utilizing SimCity software along with a written essay, a physical 3D model and a group presentation on their design. The theme of this year’s competition was, “Tomorrow’s Transit: Design a way to move people in and around your city”. The Engineering Club at Saint Leo the Great School submitted two cities. The first city was Velocitis Luminis, Brazil. City designers were Sara Fitzgerald, Leah Frain and William Acken. The second was Beaumont, Switzerland. City designers were Catherine Bannon, Laura Esteban and John Meany. Others members who assisted in the club

were Luke Croken, Ian Williamson, Michael De Masi, Jack De Stephano, Cosmo Gallaro and Brett Petruzulli. The Engineering Club is moderated by Mrs. Tommolino, a teacher at Saint Leo the Great, with the help of mentor Ms. Jenna Stagliano, an engineer from T&M Engineering Firm in Middletown. Beaumont, Switzerland won an award for the Best Futuristic City. The city was set within a mountain. The design had a railroad system within the mountain and a gondola system used to access homes and recreational facilities. The model was built using recyclable materials within the required $100 budget. Designer, John Meany, stated, “We wanted to design the mountain terrain to hold a city that is self-sustaining and eco- friendly. The main energy source of wind power allowed us to do so.” This is the third year Saint Leo the Great School has competed in the competition, and the second year the school won an award.

Oak Hill Academy Finishes As Top Private/Parochial School at Math Counts Competition!

M

rs. Rita Cotterell, an upper school math teacher at Oak Hill Academy, took a group of 6 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to Union County College for the Math Counts competition for Middlesex, Union and Monmouth Counties on Saturday, February 1, 2014. The MATHCOUNTS Competition Program is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests. The program exists in all 50 states plus U.S. territories and the Department of Defense and State Department schools. (more information at www.mathcounts.org ) The team from Oak Hill competed against public, private and parochial schools from those three counties in a multi-round competition.

The competition begins with a 30 question test covering every strand of mathematics in word problem format. The students then move on to the target round where they are given two high level word problems that need to be completed in five minutes. This is repeated five times for a total of 10 questions. Subsequently, the top team from each school takes a test of 10 questions requiring teamwork and leadership. Oak Hill Academy finished first out of all of the independent and parochial schools and 9th place overall! The team was made up of Harry Jain, Thomas Wang, Michael Zhang, Anna Effenberger, Dylan Servilla and Lucas Bruckmann. In order to prepare, these students met biweekly on Friday afternoons. Congratulations to Mrs. Cotterell and her team for such an outstanding effort!

This year’s event theme was “Passing the Torch, Blazing the Trail.” Student-athletes, coaches and honorees all enjoyed lunch before the award ceremony. “It was an honor to be nominated to represent the school,” said Alexandra. “When Mr. Moriau told me that I was selected, I felt as if all of the hard work and dedication I had put into athletics throughout my years at Ranney had paid off.” National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrates increasing female participation in sports and athletics. The organization also educates the public about Title IX—a federal law that states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financing assistance.” Title IX gives women athletes the right to equal opportunity in sports in educational institutions that receive federal funds, from elementary schools to colleges and universities. When the law was enacted in 1971, 1 in 27 girls in high school participated in athletics. Now, one in three girls participates in high school athletics.

“It was inspiring to be a part of an event that had some of the best athletes in New Jersey in the same room,” said Alexandra. “I truly respect all of the athletes who were nominated and all of the women who were honored. The speakers at the event motivated me to continue to put all of my heart into everything I do in life, not just athletics.” At Ranney, Alexandra is a member of the Varsity Girls’ Field Hockey and Lacrosse teams. During her senior field hockey season this past fall, Alexandra served as captain and was also named the team’s Most Valuable Player. This spring, she will conclude her athletic career at Ranney, but hopes younger girls will continue to participate in athletics. “My advice for younger girls who are interested in playing sports would be to never quit,” said Alexandra. “There are many difficult aspects of being on a team, such as tough practices or small disagreements with teammates. These challenges are all part of playing team sports…. The experience of participating in team sports is invaluable.”

HONOR

“Alex has devoted countless hours over the course of her years at Ranney to achieve athletic excellence,” explained Mr. Moriau. “Women’s sports are so important and I salute our state in honoring the many female student-athletes who work so hard, whether they compete at the high school or collegiate level.”

VISION

In honor of National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Day, high school and college athletes from across New Jersey joined together at Seton Hall University on February 9. All New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) member schools are encouraged to nominate a deserving female athlete to attend the celebration. Director of Athletics Tom Moriau nominated senior Alexandra EsquivelMurphy (Bay Head) to represent Ranney School.

Every Athlete is Known and Valued.

My Big (Non-fat) Greek Cheesecake RECIPE VERONICA HOFFMAN

The n he c t i K le b a T

Cheesecake is a rich, creamy, delicious and insanely diet-busting dessert that is outright irresistible. Many reasonably-sized pieces of the sweet stuff start at 400+ calories and many restaurant-sized pieces, depending on the variety, can be well over 1,000. Aside from calorie loads, many have more than 30 grams of fat and 30 grams of sugar per slice, with very few redeeming nutritional qualities. Those are some pretty ugly numbers. For the sake of dieters everywhere, cheesecake was in desperate need of a nutritional makeover. So I took to the kitchen and experimented with all kinds of substitutions, eventually landing on an old favorite swap ingredient: Fat Free Greek Yogurt. The result: all of those cringe-worthy stats for one of America’s favorite desserts are dialed down to an easier to swallow level, while adding some satisfying protein! The flavor of the new version is slightly tangier, but still has that same creamy rich texture you love in a cheesecake.

Whole Blueberry Compote

Make it special with some homemade toppin gs that are out of this world! Chocolate Syrup

Monkey Business

Method 1. Preheat oven to 350° 2. Combine graham cracker crumbs, butter and 3 TBSP sugar until moistened. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch spring form pan and place in freezer while you prepare the filling. 3. In a large bowl add Greek yogurt, sugar, cornstarch, vanilla, eggs and zest and whisk to combine. 4. Pour into prepared crust and bake on the top shelf for about 40 minutes, or until the edges start to puff up and just become brown (the center will still be a little jiggly and this is okay) 5. Remove from oven and cool completely before slicing, preferably overnight in the refrigerator. Reduced Sugar: You can lighten the recipe up even more by using sugar substitute like Splenda in place of the regular granulated sugar.

Mash together 3 extra ripe bananas and 3 tbsp of peanut butter until super soft and almost mousse-like, spread over chilled cheesecake.

Whole Blueberry Compote

Combine 2 tsp cornstarch, ½ cup of water, and 2 TBSP of sugar in a medium saucepan and cook until slightly thickened. Add 2 cups of blueberries and stir until warm. Let cool slightly before pouring over chilled cheesecake. (Easily swap for raspberries, strawberries, or any combination of whole berries you like)

Brown Sugar Lemon Sauce

Combine 1 TBSP cornstarch, ¼ cup of water, 1 TBSP butter and ¼ cup of brown sugar in a medium saucepan and cook until thickened. Whisk in the zest and juice of one whole lemon until well combined. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes before pouring over chilled cheesecake. (My favorite!)

Mocha Syrup

Mix ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, ½ cup sugar, ½ fresh brewed coffee until completely blended cook over medium heat until slightly thickened (will be pretty thin until it cools). Stir in ½ tsp vanilla extract. Let cool before drizzling over chilled cheesecake slices.

Chocolate Syrup

Mix ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, ½ cup sugar, ½ boiling water until completely blended and cook over medium heat until slightly thickened (will be pretty thin until it cools). Remove from heat and stir in ½ tsp vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Let cool before drizzling over chilled cheesecake slices. WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM MARCH 2014
