I’m IMPORTANT
I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”
The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

Note from the Editor
S
pring has finally sprung, or not? I am writing this “note” after what hopefully is the last sprinkle of 2014 snow. Looking out the windows from my home, I am confused, or maybe Mother Nature is, but I am confident the first day of spring was March 20th. In hopes of warmer weather on the horizon, (forecast in a couple days says 60+ degrees), I will be making sure my calendar is chock-full of outdoor activities. I think we all are ready for warmer CAROLYN BURTNICK temperatures, and the anticipated weathEditor-In-Chief er will ensure us to enjoy even more the delights of springtime. Something to look forward to - the 16th annual Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival, located in Holmdel, is a fun-filled, eclectic and free event for the entire family, which will be held on May 4, 2014 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. – more details can be found on page 32. Plus, check out our Top Ten list of local parks in this edition. Community Magazine (CM) has featured Colts Neck resident Paul Lenz, a local who in his 70’s has picked up the pace in his untraditional life. I won’t
spoil this impeccable “thirst for life piece” that our editor Vicky Valet wrote, his story can be found in the centerfold. Did you know you can be a part of our magazine? Every month we receive countless emails from our readers about articles and ideas they have for our publication – send in your thoughts today to info@ communitymagazinenj.com, if you want to speak to me directly, shoot me an email at the address below. SPRING GALA is an evening steeped in tradition }
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
T
he Colts Neck PTO has held their Ladies Night Out Spring Gala for 31 years and the event continues to grow in attendance as well as in community support. On March 13, 2014, 250 women attended the Gala held at Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club in Farmingdale. Event Co-Chairs Carrie Benevento and Heather Tormey said, “We had the most teachers and staff in attendance than ever before. That is a testament to the commitment of the PTO to our District. Both parents and teachers want to support the fundraising efforts that make a difference in the lives of the children.”

PTO Gala Committee Co-Chairs Carrie Benevento (left) & Heather Tormey (right) were pleased with the success of the Spring Gala.
The Co-Chairs commended their event designer Sarah Stepic of Stepic Design, whom they said “really brought our event to life with her designs, copy and video montage of all our Sponsors.” All of the spectacular centerpieces were generously donated by Sayrewoods Florist and Event Design. Devine Photo Booth was a huge hit and “everyone had a picture taken with a friend in the rocking photo booth,” said Benevento. Both Tormey and Benevento agreed, “Our DJ, Xplosive Entertainment, was a huge hit and kept the ladies boogying all night long!”

Gift baskets were donated by individuals, families, and businesses throughout Monmouth County. Some of items included gift cards, jewelry, fragrances, and even memorabilia autographed by Colts Neck celebrity Jacquie Lee! “There were over 100 opportunities to take home a fabulous gift basket as well as a 50/50 prize, which was over $1,500 after the split,” said Benevento. The dance floor was full, singing was constant, and a Photo Booth as well as S’mores bar put the finishing touches to the evening. Assisting Benevento and Tormey on the Committee were Justine

Pre-K to eighth. This money will be used to fund various educational projects and fill the need in supportive funding that deep budget cuts have brought to our district. We are positioned to help where it is most needed and look forward to working with the Administration to determine the best use of our funds. Having developed a close relationship with the Board of Education and the District Administration, we are confident our support will make a difference and better the daily lives of our children,” said Benevento and Tormey.
PTO President Pamela Molloy said, “This year’s Spring Gala was a resounding success with the largest turn out in years. This year’s theme, ‘Oh What a Night,’ was all about 70’s Disco and it was indeed a party. This event gets better and better each year, and this year’s event will be hard to beat.” Benevento and Tormey emphasized, “Our event would not have been so successful without the elegance and professionalism at Eagle Oaks. They have been our venue of choice for several years. We are so thankful for their support of the Colts Neck PTO.”

iddletown Ice World was the place to be on March 1, 2014 when Holmdel Village School students and their parents attended the Village School PSA Skate Night. This first time event was not a fundraiser but a Family Fun event. Village School PSA President Dina D’Ambrosi said, “With everyone having such hectic schedules, it can be very challenging for families to go out to just enjoy being together. That is why the PSA schedules events such as this one in an effort to promote family time.” Close to 300 skaters enjoyed the two-hour event, along with many non-skaters cheering them on.

Event Co-chairs Suzanne Serini and Leslie Marotta were pleased with the participation. “The kids had so much fun. Even the first-time skaters were confident using the horses to help them skate. This night exceeded my expectations and turned out to be so much more,” said Suzanne. “Skate night was a funfilled evening for everyone,” said Leslie. She added, “We want to thank the parents for coming out and Middletown Sports Complex for sponsoring the event. We are already looking forward to next year!” PSA President D’Ambrosi said the entire ice skating rink had been reserved for Village School only.

It sure has been a long winter, and we don’t know about you, but we’re ready for some fun in the sun! As the warmer weather arrives, get out there and let your kiddos climb, toss a ball, take a hike, fish, boat or even hunt for fossils. There are so many great parks and playgrounds in our area to enjoy, but these are some of our faves. Check ‘em out, change it up and make this spring and summer a sampler instead of visiting the same old place!
1. Victory Park at the bottom of Lafayette Street, Rumson
the heat, an inline rink, basketball courts, open fields, and 2.3 miles of paved trail for walking, biking, and in-line skating.
Snuggled right in the heart of down town and on the banks of the Navesink, Victory is a great retreat. Various sized playgrounds excite the tykes, and lots of shaded areas give relief from the sun when needed. It offers two tennis courts, a basketball court, a bocce court and a lovely gazebo with benches overlooking the Navesink River. Kiddos will love the sights and sounds of the ducks and boats that swim by. Pack a snack or lunch or pop into Brennan’s for sandwiches and make a day of it. And don’t forget to take a walk 2 blocks over to Crazees for an ice cream break!
6. Sickle’s Park, Harrison Avenue Little Silver
2. Poricy Park 345 Oak Hill Road, Middletown
7. Holmdel Park and Longstreet Farm 44 Longstreet Road, Holmdel
This unique park boasts 250 acres of open space, wildlife and their habitats and prehistoric fossil beds. Take the whole fam bird watching, on one of the many walking trails, or bring your very own Indiana Jones’ over to look for fossils that could be 70 million years old. Kids love getting dirty and searching through the sand for treasures! The Nature Center and the Historic Murray Farmhouse, also located in Poricy Park host lots of fun family friendly events and programs throughout the year.
3. Seven Presidents Park 221 Ocean Avenue North, Long Branch In the warmer months, this 38-acre beach park is a great place to swim, sun and surf and a haven for beach goers. In the off-season (when all the “out of town” guests leave the area), this spot turns into the perfect local playground. Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen – when the sun is out, it is HOT!
4. Manasquan Reservoir Visitors Center: 311 Windeler Road & Environmental Center: 331 Georgia Tavern Road, Howell A little bit further, but worth the trip. Spend a day fishing, boating, or walking the trail at this beautiful spot in southern Monmouth County. Over one million visitors come to the Manasquan Reservoir each year for the 1,204 acres of land and water that includes fishing, a 5-mile perimeter trail, a 1-mile nature trail, a playground, kayak and rowboat rentals and ice skating, cold weather permitting.
5. Dorbrook Recreation Area 209 Route 537 East, Colts Neck This Monmouth County gem has it all, a barrier-free playground that provide hours of entertainment, tennis courts, two swimming pools (for lessons only), a Sprayground which is a kids delight and helps us all beat
This Little Silver gem boasts great climbing walls, huge slides (as well as pint-sized ones), monkey bars, swings and so much more fun. Don’t forget your bats and balls, great fields to let the kids run wild in, and a track that you could take the stroller for a spin around. And not sure what you are having for dinner, head on over to Sickle’s Market to pick up some great food.
Take a step back into time, with the sights, sounds, and smells of rural Monmouth County in the 1890s that have been re-created on 9 acres at Historic Longstreet Farm. Every visit is a real life history lesson, as interpreters in period dress show both daily and seasonal agricultural and domestic activities. Then head up the hill to Holmdel Park which is one of Monmouth County’s most popular locations for active recreation and nature appreciation. This park features fishing holes, picnic areas perfect for lunch, tennis courts, two playgrounds, ice skating, sledding for the colder months and 10 miles of trails.
8. Thompson Park 805 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft Looking for a place to keep everyone in the family happy? Thompson Park is the place! Enjoy anything and everything from 14 miles of multiple-use trails (4.9 miles paved), a playground, tennis courts, a fishing lake for canoes/kayaks and electric-powered boats, a seasonal group picnic facility, Creative Arts Center, and with off-leash dog area even the family dog will enjoy this trip!
9. Marine Park Red Bank Directly on the Navesink Riverfront enjoy an afternoon of beautiful views and brilliant breezes. And only steps away from downtown Red Bank, perfect for an after park treat. The park offers a marine-themed playground, which many local kiddos refer to as “fishy park”. Let them climb and run, in this gated area, giving Mom & Dad some ease.
10. Sandy Ground Where Angels Play Ocean Avenue, Sea Bright What could be better than a playground on the beach? Tucked alongside the boardwalk in Sea Bright is a blue-and-white-playground that replaces the one that was lost during superstorm Sandy. Kids will love the sand in their toes as they shoot down the slide, climb and have fun “at the beach”. This playground was built in loving memory of a hero, Anne Marie Murphy.

ith the Polar Vortex and plenty of snow days keeping kids indoors this past winter, Lincroft School provided an opportunity for learning and creativity for their cooped up students through their fourth annual LEGO BrickFest event. On February 26, students presented their original LEGO works in an art show meets engineering expo venue. This large gallery of 90 brick creations was viewed by all the students who voted for their favorite creation in both their own grade and in the overall collection. While many students let their imaginations run wild with abstract and interesting interpretations of people, places, and things, others built more realistic creations. The theme of the 2014 Olympics Winter Games in Sochi inspired several artists, as did the videogame Minecraft and the movie Frozen. Some creations were educational or historical, and others were fun and festive. “Every year we are more surprised by the originality of our LEGO artists,” said LEGO BrickFest co-chair Melanie Elmiger. “There was such a broad range of ideas and subject matter. In this age of iPads and videogames, it is great to witness the result of time spent just putting bricks together to form something imaginative.” The LEGO BrickFest is sponsored by the Lincroft School PTA which provides the LEGO set prizes awarded to the artists. Co-chair Lauren DeRosa has been organizing the event with Mrs. Elmiger these last four years, and attributes the success of the event to the enthusiasm of the kids and the support of the parent volunteers. “This event could not have happened without the help from so many parent

ne of Monmouth County’s premiere business events of the season is the annual CNBA Luncheon held at Trump National Golf Club. This year’s event was held on March 25, 2014. Residents and businesses from Colts Neck and surrounding areas came to celebrate stories and spend quality time at one of New Jersey’s most prestigious venues. The CNBA is a proud sponsor and supporter of PROJECT GRADUATION. Project Graduation is a national program offered locally at Colts Neck High School, in which organized, adult-supervised and alcohol-free activities are offered as part of a post-graduation party, in lieu of student-run events with alcohol or drugs. Colts Neck High School parent organizations host a number of fundraising events to offset the expenses of this worthwhile cause. This month’s community event was a sold out basketball game between the Harlem Wizards and faculty of CNHS and Colts Neck district schools held on March 11 at CNHS. With over 800 attendees in standing room only, the crowd laughed and cheered for a great cause - Project Graduation. Making Waves With Healthy Snacking WaveBar brings vegetables and sweets together in one perfect snack.
STORY KAITLYN ANNESS
W
hat if you could have the taste of dessert with a serving of vegetables? Heaven, right? No, it’s Wave Bar. But definitely close enough. Created in Holmdel by Rick and Monica Guarnaccia, Wave Bar is the vegan way to get kids and adults alike a healthy serving of fruits and vegetables daily. Using no refined sugar, non-GMO ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup packed with five different vegetables and assorted fruits, the small startup is on its way to cornering the great-tasting health food market. “We’ve been spending a lot of time developing a third flavor, we started out with just two to test the waters and see how people reacted to a granola bar with vegetables in it,” Rick said. Good news for the Guarnaccia’s, people reacted well. What started as a family recipe in their own Holmdel kitchen has grown to shelves in stores all over the Tri-State area with no signs of stopping. “We really wanted to start small. In a lot of the demos, we validated the con-
20
cept and parents loved the idea. When kids like it too, it’s a homerun,” Rick said. Now, Rick said people are looking for something sweeter. And as the two current flavors of Wave Bars hit more and more shelves, Rick and Monica are working to create a third. With chocolate, of course. “We debated a little bit, since we’re promoting healthy snacking, doing something with chocolate. But we’re working on a way to keep the core essence of the product the same, and the sugar low and natural.” The health conscience family continues to look for prime ingredients while injecting their customer’s love of chocolate into the bar. “People are always going to eat sweet, but if you can eat something with a nutritional benefit its obviously better,” Rick said. “It’s a lot of work to make sure we check all the boxes. We’ve been putting thought into what the marketing around it should be, how we should phrase it. In essence, we’re still a natural food company.”
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
Wave Bar can be seen in Monmouth County stories such as Dearborn Market, Delicious Orchards, Cracked Olive Market and Sickles Market. Soon it will be seen on the shelves of Whole Foods, an achievement the Guarnaccias likened to the Holy Grail. And as the company expands rapidly, Rick said they are learning every step of the way. Wave Bar is now lining up a distributor, getting into more stores and actively doing small demos to keep the buzz going around the delicious granola bar. “Ideally, you pick up a couple of customers who become brand ambassadors,” Rick said. “There is nothing like our bar on the market.” The biggest challenge now? Breaking into school systems. Rick said while local faculty have loved the bar, often food decisions are outsourced to large companies in school districts. And Wave Bar just isn’t big enough…yet. “There’s a lot for us to be proud and excited about. We’re a small family-owned business, trying to get kids and adults to snack healthier.”

incroft School PTA held their annual and biggest fundraiser of the year, Gamblers’ Gala – A Night at the Races, on March 14, 2014. A new venue, South Gate Manor in Freehold, and a change from the previously named Casino Night, combined with incredible prizes and gift baskets made this year’s fundraiser one of the best. Vice President of Fundraising Rosemarie Veglak said, “The Gambers’ Gala was an overwhelming success. The crowd had a great time dancing the night away while enjoying the casino tables, horse racing activities, live auctions, and 100 gift baskets! It seemed like everyone was a winner!”

She thanked her Committee consisting of Jeannine Cito, Erica Gottieb, Cristina Young, Suzie Hot, Kira Lynn Voitle and Jessica Backofen for “working tirelessly to prepare for the event and ensure its success.” Veglak said, “This event could not have happened without the determination and dedication of this amazing committee. I personally cannot say enough about how wonderful these ladies are. I would also like to thank the Lincroft PTA Executive Board and all the parents, faculty and staff in attendance. We could not have done it without all of you and your many contributions.” PTA President Debbie Piperno was pleased with the outcome. “I want to thank all of my chair people for creating an unparalleled event that left guests wanting more. Not only did our PTA raise more money than expected, our community immersed themselves in a fun night of giving, dancing, and out-right partying. As I come to the end of my two-year term as president, I am so thankful for the friendships I have been able to make. I am incredibly proud of our Lincroft community of teachers, staff, parents, and children.”
Gift baskets for the event included 24 creatively chosen donations made by each class in Lincroft School; and 76 Grand Baskets donated by families and local businesses. The range in basket content went from jewelry to gift cards to the Opera to tickets for a Rangers game, and so many more incredible items and surprises. Casino tables and personnel were provided by Tumbling Dice; non-stop fantastic music was provided by Rich Kaufman Productions, Inc.; and Boardwalk Photo Booth Rentals provided be-a-star props for some extra fun. VP of Fundraising Rosemarie Veglak noted, “The proceeds from the Gala will go toward helping Lincroft School with providing educational enrichment programs, advances in technology, and other various projects for the children and teachers.”

T
he W.R. Satz Parent Support Group (“PSG”) has had a busy year thus far planning activities for both students and staff. This year, the PSG is led by two Co-Presidents: Dina Hamwi and Anissa Quirk. The goal of the group is to bring fun events to the middle school students and to raise some money for the school. The PSG would like to provide the school something it needs that may not be covered by the Holmdel School District Budget. The PSG started off the school year with a Welcome Back Barbeque for students and faculty. They Physical Education teachers Chris made about 700 hamburgers, Arecchi and Heather Bailey oversaw cheeseburgers and hot dogs! The all the games. PSG also sponsored an entertaining yet educational assembly called The Brain Show. The questions were challenging and included topics such as history, pop culture, math, science and recycling. Four teams of four were formed to answer questions and compete against each other. There was music and dancing and much fun was had by all! In November, the PSG sponsored its first Open Gym Night – a night of fun basketball activities that included dribbling relays, three on three games and half-court shots. Physical Education teachers Heather Bailey and Chris Arecchi oversaw all the games. The PSG re-designed its Spirit wear logo and made available a Holmdel “H” for school spirit apparel. They will be offering another opportunity in the spring for orders. New this year was a 7th Grade Dance held at the end of February, where over 90 students came. The 8th grade class has its own dance following the graduation ceremony in June which will be held at The Gramercy at Lakeside Manor. The PSG’s Fundraising efforts are under the guidance of Robin Andersen and Christina Pinnero. They have filled the calendar with Dining for Dollars at Bertucci’s in Hazlet (the second Tuesday of each month), Fall and Spring Clothing Drives, Monthly Market Day Food Orders, and Barnes & Noble December and June Events. On February 26, they hosted their newest fundraiser: a night of

shopping and dining in Red Bank with Alex and Ani and The Bistro. Many families attended and others phoned in their orders to make this event very successful. The other Executive Board members include Debbie Brew, VP Membership; Jen Lee, Treasurer; Dani Page, Corresponding Secretary; and Andria Wojtunig, Recording Secretary. All have worked hard to increase membership, keep finances in order and communicate all things PSG effectively. The PSG has made tremendous strides in beautifying the school inside and out. Enhancements to the front of the school include beautiful gold letters spelling out ‘W.R. Satz School’, new benches, trash and recycling bins as well as bushes and plants which will bloom in the springtime. As for inside, the cafeteria has a re-designed Recycling Center that serves as a repository for shoes and sneakers through its Shoebox Program, beauty products through its Terracycle Program and Box Tops and Labels for Education programs which bring much needed funds into the school. The PSG also accepted ‘Satz Snaps’ – 8x10 winter scene photos – from all students wanting to participate. These pictures will be hung in the hallways throughout the school. Through all the aforementioned events, activities and projects, the PSG has worked diligently to support the students and staff of W.R. Satz – in turn, making everyone’s school year enjoyable, fun and educational. PSG members at the Welcome Back Barbeque that was held for students and faculty.

Daddy & Daughter
Sweetheart Dance
HOSTED BY HOLMDEL RECREATION
H
olmdel Recreation held their annual and always sold-out Daddy and Daughter “Sweetheart” Dance on February 22, 2014 at Indian Hill School. Open only to third through sixth grade girls, the event offered Dads the opportunity to spend quality time with their little sweethearts. An evening of dancing to great music provided by DJ Jeff, along with numerous contests kept the night on a high-energy level. A hot buffet was provided by DeMarco’s Catering and Gourmet Deli. Steve “Pops” Cittadino, a guiding force in Holmdel sports over the years, helped members of the Holmdel Recreation serve the meal. Over 130 young ladies and their Dads, or about 60 “couples” were escorted into the school by their very proud fathers. Once inside, Dads and their daughters were directed to the professional photographer for a photo that would serve as a memento of the event. Moms waiting at home knew the meaning of this photo, and years from now, both Dads and their daughters would be able to recall the night with fond memories.

HOLMDEL RECREATION HOSTS
MOTHER & SON
DINNER DANCE STORY SUSAN MURPHY
H
olmdel Recreation hosted their annual Mother and Son Dinner Dance at Indian Hill School on February 23, 2014. Open to boys attending third through sixth grades, the special evening included a hot buffet by DeMarco’s Catering and Gourmet Deli. Music was provided by DJ Jeff, who challenged the boys to participate in a Moms versus Sons singing contest. DJ Jeff continued by asking the boys to teach their mothers some dance moves; then had the mothers teach their sons a few dance steps.
Over eighty individuals or about forty “couples” attended the Mother and Son Dinner Dance. Smiles and laughter were abundant as mothers and sons socialized, danced, and enjoyed spending time together. Upon arriving at the event, each family had their picture taken by a professional photographer. This served as a memento of the special night that both mothers and their sons would treasure for years to come.

Colts Neck Resident Celebr ates His 70s By
Pick i ng Up T he Pac e
M
any view their 70s as a time to, after years upon years of taxing 9-to-5 work, finally begin the luxurious chapter of life known as retirement. This decade, one which is associated with notions of settling and slowing down, is often characterized by lazy days, perhaps on the sun-bathed porch of a residence relocated down south. This, however, was not at all the case for one Colts Neck resident, who, just two weeks following his landmark 70th birthday, decided it was time to do one thing: pick up the pace. Born in Brno, the second largest city in the now Czech Republic, on October 15, 1934, Paul Lenz’s first great adventure came at the ripe age of 14. “I came to Israel from Czechoslovakia in 1948 during the war of independence, [and] lived in
36
Tel Aviv,” said Lenz of his decades-ago move. Never looking back, he quickly put down roots in his new home, creating a new life and choosing an unexpected career path. “I wound up in medical school on a bet with my best friend,” he said. “I attended the Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem and graduated from its first class in 1958…[I] lived afterwards in a kibbutz in the Negev southern Israel desert, where I was the primary care physician of David and Paula Ben-Gurion, the first Israeli prime minister.” After four years of practicing medicine in Israel and Africa, Lenz immigrated to the United States to complete his residency at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. and Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
STORY VICKY VALET
A fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in the 1960s New York City and group practice work in the 1970s Washington, D.C. followed, eventually leading up to Lenz’s 1975 move to Colts Neck, N.J. “I became medical director of Rutgers Community Health Plan (RCHP)—one of the first health maintenance organizations (HMO's) in New Jersey, based in New Brunswick,” he said. Lenz’s RCHP career would continue on for the next 25 years, the last five of which took him to Eastern Europe. Now 79-years-old, Lenz still maintains his Colts Neck residence, as well as a 50-year-long passion for pursing photography— specifically abstracts, reflections and macro-photography—which
he has shared with the surrounding community. “I am a veteran [at the Colts Neck Friends of the Library Art Shows],” said Lenz. “I love to show my latest work there and see what the other regulars created in the last year.” It is, however, not his medicinal work nor his photography, but his untraditional lifestyle, his thirst for adventure that has Lenz making headlines. Over the course of his first seven decades of life, Lenz filled his spare time uniquely. He observed the Falasha tribes in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and provided health care to the Congo’s Kivu district while on the brink of civil war. Lenz assisted the Finnish Sami in rounding-up polar circle reindeer for migration, and studied the Gobi Desert’s water resources. He dug for dinosaur fossils in Argentina’s western deserts, and backpacked to both the base of Mount Everest and the Ladakah Himalayan villages. Yet, none of this seemed to be enough for this thrill-seeker, who for his 70th birthday in 2004, decided to make running his next big adventure. “One of my daughter’s best friends was training for a marathon, and I just joined her for the fun of it for an 8-mile run. I found it fun, so I decided to run my first marathon,” said Lenz of his very first race, the 26.2-mile-long Marine
Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. He crossed the finish line after approximately five hours and, while filled with a great sense of accomplishment, wanted to train more vigorously in an effort to improve his time. After one year of preparation, he returned to the Marine Corps Marathon in 2005 and finished with a time of 4:25:12. He then continued on to compete in the 2006 Boston Marathon, which he conquered in just 4:20:01. Since 2006, Lenz has participated in 10 marathons and, while he treasures each experience, he does have his favorites. “The two most exciting: Boston in 2006 and Athens in 2010— this one was on the 2,500-year anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, from the village of Marathon to the stadium built for the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896. I got a bronze medal in my age group,” recollected Lenz. While many of these 10 marathons have been on American soil—taking Lenz to states like Chicago and Vermont—several have been international races, contributing to his ultimate goal of running a
marathon on each continent. Lenz can currently check three continents off of his list: North America, Europe and Asia, where he completed the Tiberias Marathon in Israel. “I wanted to do the last continent, Antarctica, for my 80th birthday this year,” he said. “As of now, I have three continents and need four more to reach my goal.” Until then, Lenz will continue his training with a focus on racing in his 11th marathon, which he hopes will be in Dublin, Ireland this October. Among his favorite spots to train are Delaware, Vermont and, of course, New Jersey, where he prefers sections of the Henry Hudson Trail and the Manasquan Reservoir. “It is quiet, one can concentrate on thinking out an issue, and I love being exposed to nature,” explained Lenz. “I couldn’t do it in a gym!” Despite all of his escapades, all of the places he’s seen and all of the races he’s ran from 1934 Brno to 2014 Colts Neck, there are, in his memory, a select few experiences that stand out from the rest: “Taking my children, one at a time, for two to three weeks, traveling when they were growing up, and having them plan the trips,” said Lenz of what will always top his list.

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MONMOUTH COUNTY CELEBRATES 75 YEARS OF BUILDING BETTER COMMUNITIES JLMC will host a cocktail gaming night on May 31st at The Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands where it will recognize the 2014 Outstanding Leaguer
T
he Junior League of Monmouth County (JLMC) is celebrating 75 years of building better communities with a cocktail gaming night at the Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands on May 31st where it will recognize the 2014 Outstanding Leaguer. Since its founding in Red Bank by 13 forward thinking women, the members of the Junior League of Monmouth County (JLMC) have responded to the needs of the community by training women to become effective volunteer leaders and by implementing projects and programs to improve the lives of families in our county. The JLMC and its hundreds of volunteers have touched most if not all of the nonprofit organizations in Monmouth County in some way, including holding current and past leadership and board seats. The Monmouth Museum, Monmouth Day Care Center and Hand in Hand in Long Branch are all projects of the JLMC that have had lasting impact on the residents of Monmouth County. As part of its training mission, the members of the JLMC develop and implement programs that become viable community resources and eventually turn them over to others in the community to carry forward. It is the comprehensive training that the JLMC provides its members which sets the organization apart from others and is the reason many League members can be found on almost every charitable board in the county.
38
Over the JLMC’s 75 year history, the roles of women have changed and many members now work outside the home, but they continue to take time to meet at the JLMC Headquarters at 55 Center Street in Rumson to tackle the latest challenges and improve the community. The JLMC’s current focus is Empowering Young Girls to Become Confident Women. Through various programs, the League is reaching out to young girls to give them tools to build self-esteem and navigate
the ever-changing relationships between friends and family. Over the past year, the JLMC has sponsored 10 girls to attend summer leadership camps, given over 100 girls a healthy start through the League’s Kids in the Kitchen program, and coached 30 young ladies through Girls on the Run (GOTR). GOTR is a positive youth development program that teaches life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. This 10 week program
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally ready to complete in a celebratory 5k running event. The JLMC will be sponsoring the first Monmouth County GOTR 5k on June 8, 2014 in Fair Haven. To commemorate the League’s 75th anniversary, the organization has set a goal of providing GOTR sponsorships to 75 deserving young girls. The anniversary celebration will be the Diamond Jubilee gala on May 31, 2014 at Beacon Hill Country Club in the Atlantic Highlands. This will be a fabulous evening of live music provided by Tim McLoone and the Shirleys, casino gaming, an open bar and dinner as well as recognizing the 2014 Outstanding Leaguer. The Outstanding Leaguer is a prestigious honor awarded to a member of the League who has sustained quality service to both the JLMC and outside community organizations; has achieved diversity of experience and responsibility; has made an impact in the JLMC and has made a difference in the community. The Outstanding Leaguer exhibits qualities of leadership and teamwork as well as promoting leadership in others. Whether you have direct affiliation with the League or just want to applaud the dedication and hard work of the Junior League of Monmouth County, you are invited to celebrate with the League at these two events! For more information on tickets, sponsorships and JLMC membership, visit www.jlmc.org.

Colts Neck Community Honors Their Hometown Heroes

S
ome people in Colts Neck have an insatiable appetite for helping others. Yes, food may fuel their bodies, but they only feel truly nourished when they protect, help, and save precious lives. Compassion floods the hearts of these self-less individuals. These are our First Responders. On a brisk, sunny February morning, Colts Neck Community Church hosted its 5th Annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast to honor and raise funds for the First Responders of Colts Neck, comprised of the Fire Department and First Aid Squad. Over 50 volunteers and their families, as well as dozens of families from throughout the community sat down together to enjoy a breakfast with champions, which included buttery golden brown pancakes hot off the griddle (courtesy of George and Savaas, the owners of Perkins Restaurant in Colts Neck), sizzling sausage, and fresh fruit with coffee, tea, and juice. As they relished in the delicious meal, the volunteers also found great enjoyment in the fellowship with others from the area. One first responder expressed how much he enjoyed spending this time with other volunteers he rarely sees, other than sporadically taking calls together. The wide smiles, hearty laughs, affirming handshakes, and plentiful conversations created a buzz of positive energy, one ignited by the common passion for helping people. The savory aroma of pancakes and sausage was accompanied by the warm smoky scent of fire jackets, a reminder that although at rest, these volunteers were prepared to be called to duty at a moment’s notice. Generous donations from people throughout the community who attended, amounted to approximately $2,500,
the highest total raised to date at the CNCC Breakfasts. “It’s a wonderful thing the church is doing for the volunteers in this community,” said Mayor Russell Macnow of Colts Neck Township. “The Fire Company is very appreciative of this event, the donations, and outpouring of support,” added Chief Michael Burke of the Colts Neck Fire Department. The CNFD is responsible for providing emergency services to the 13,000 residents of Colts Neck Township and its volunteers have responded to an average of 410 calls per year since 2004. The Colts Neck First Aid Squad is composed of volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life, providing emergency medical care at no cost. They have responded to an average of 714 calls per year since 2004. Monetary donations are used to purchase ambulances, equipment, medical supplies and the maintenance of ambulances and the building. If you are interested in supporting the First Responders of Colts Neck, please visit www.cnfd.org and coltsneckfirstaid. org for more information. The Colts Neck Community Church is committed to helping people “Find, Live & Share Real life”. They have activities open to all throughout the week including Bible Studies, Adult Education, Community Groups, Youth Nights and more. Their Sunday Services are held at 10:15 a.m. each week and are led by Pastor Chris Durkin (pastorchris@ ourcncc.net) who can often be heard saying “At CNCC, Community is our middle name”! Visit their website at www. OurCNCC.org for more on how they can best serve you or call the Church Office at 732.462.2779. CNCC is located at 25 Merchants Way, Colts Neck, NJ 07722.

DIVORCE TALK
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.
CHANGED CIRCUMSTANCES
Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. For more information please see the firm’s website at www. par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.
Changed circumstances is a term that often affects people years after they thought their legal problems ended when the divorce was granted. Common in divorce and extremely rare in other areas of the law, changed circumstances can often change court judgments or agreements of the parties. Why? In family law there is a recognition that court orders and agreements largely look forward, whereas other types of litigation generally look to redress past grievances. Once that grievance is redressed by a monetary award, the relationship between the plaintiff and the defendant is over. In divorce, the relationship continues into the future. Alimony, child support and parenting issues often continue for many years after the divorce. Life goes on and circumstances change, often making prior orders and agreements unfair, unworkable or even impossible. Sometimes divorcing spouses who want to limit their future dealings and the prospect of future litigation will agree to waive their rights to request a modification of the agreement. These waivers are generally only enforceable when they involve rights belonging solely to the parties, e.g., the right to receive alimony, the obligation to pay alimony, the right to seek a modification of an alimony award if and when circumstances change or even the payor’s right to ask for a decrease in child support when financial circumstances warrant.
Waivers of rights that affect (or even belong to) the children are not enforceable. For example, a waiver by the primary custodial parent of the right to seek an increase in child support is typically not waiveable because that right belongs to the children. It is the children’s right to receive child support and the custodial parent cannot bargain it away. Similarly, a waiver of the right to request a change in custody or a parenting time schedule is unwaiveable because these issues may affect the best interests of the children. The court is legally charged with the responsibility to protect the children’s interests. Parents can’t waive the children’s right or the court’s obligation. The equitable distribution of assets and liabilities is generally not subject to modification (except for fraud or other types of wrongdoing) because the division of assets is based primarily on past facts. Once the assets and liabilities are divided, the issue of past conduct is resolved. Like it or not, the obligation is over, the remedy is implemented, and changed circumstances no longer apply. The types of changed circumstances that may justify a modification are virtually infinite and depend on the unique charicteristics of each case. Next month we’ll look at some examples of changes in circumstance that may or may not justify modification of an order or agreement. You may be surprised.

Indian Hill School Heads to the Boardwalk
I
t might have been cold outside, but that did not stop the students and staff at Indian Hill School in Holmdel from having their annual Boardwalk night on March 14.
Indian Hill’s Boardwalk Night had every type of game that would be seen at any boardwalk, including blow up areas, racing toy pigs and Krazy Kans, where someone would try and knock down cans with a ball. Tickets were sold for the games, food and gift baskets, made by each class at Indian Hill, that would be auctioned later that night. All of the money will go to the school and help the students with anything to help their classroom. Carolyn Zofchak, the vice president of fundraising at Indian Hill School, has been running the Boardwalk night for the past three years. Sadly this year was her final year, but she is leaving happy. “The kids have a great time,” said Zofchak.
Celebrating 100 Days of Learning PROVIDED BY ANGELA MANSOUR
On Thursday, February 20, Kindergarten classes at Saint Leo the Great School celebrated an annual tradition with their highly anticipated 100th Day of School. The children were asked to dress up as elderly 100 year-old’s and bring in 100 pieces of an item of their choice. The day was filled with “100th day” themed activities to commend the children on their milestone and also gave them a chance to show off their counting skills. The big smiles and wholehearted laughter spoke of all the excitement the children felt on that 100th day of school.

Oak Hill Academy Celebrates Littletown Day!
O
n March 12, Oak Hill Academy’s Lower School (Grades K-4) was transformed across the pond into a mini version of England. Throughout the day, children shared all that they have been learning about the culture, food, and activities that make up England.
Mrs. Linda Vacca is the Heads-On Hands-On (Ho-Ho) teacher that is in charge of putting together Littletown Day along with all of her classes. The children were in charge of every part of life in Littletown from operating the “Buckingham Bank” to running concessions at the “Queen’s Café” and “Princess Kate’s Ice Cream Parlour.” Mail was delivered by the “Double Decker Post Office” down the “Royal Walkway.” Students were able to spend their “tinybucks” at “Big Ben’s Book Store” or the “Toy Store Tower.” For recreation residents of Littletown got to try their golf swing at the “Great Britain Golf Center” or head out to “Prince George’s Gym.” Middletown Mayor Stephanie Murray, and Monmouth County Surrogate, Rosemary Peters, Esq., visited along with Headmaster, Joseph Pacelli to take a tour around this wonderful English Littletown. Cheers to a thoroughly enjoyable day!

Colts Neck Troop 290 Welcomes New Scouts! A Local Realtor with a World of Experience.
Lisa Aldridge Realtor Associate c: 908.216.6440 o: 732.946.9200
I
n the beginning of February, Troop 290 competed in an annual Klondike Derby. In the Klondike Derby, each troop sends a team of scouts to compete against other troops from Monmouth Council. The Derby consists of several stations where the teams must demonstrate their scouting skills such as first aid, orienteering, cooking and team work for which the Scout groups are awarded a maximum of 20 points for each station. Troop 290 sent 15 scouts in total to the Kondike. There was plenty of snow, cold air, lots of fun and great memories. The next event that month was the Cross Over ceremony where Cub Scouts from Pack 90 crossed over to the Boy Scouts. Congratulations to all the scouts who recently crossed over to Troop 290 at the annual Blue & Gold Luncheon at the Colts Neck Inn. The last event that took place in February was the annual ski trip, which is the favorite of many Scouts. This time, Troop 290 went to Shawnee Mountain. On this trip the Scouts enjoyed a fun-filled weekend of skiing and snowboarding. Scouts had a great day with lots of snow and no snow storms. In the evening the Scouts enjoyed a community center filled with ping pong, basketball and several other games. All in all, Troop 290 had a great month from the Klondike Derby, to the Cub Scouts Pack 90 cross over and ending the month with a fun Ski trip. Troop 290 is now looking forward to the trip to Delaware and using a real flight simulator that is used to train commercial airline pilots! Their other upcoming trips in 2014 include a camping trip to Gettysburg in April, a camping trip to the State Police Camporee in May, white water rafting in June, summer camp in July and sailing in the Bahamas in August! Great times ahead! Boy Scouts is for boys 11-17 years old. You can join at any time. Please send an email to Join@Troop290.com and they will get back to you. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, check out their website at www.Pack90NJ.com, or send an email to Join@pack90nj.com.

or students who enjoy playing an instrument and making beautiful music, Ranney School Summer Programs offer multiple courses for students in grades 1-8 designed to enhance musical talent and performance skills.
For young musicians entering grades 1-3, classes include Sound Scapes: Creating Music and Stories and World Drumming: Rhythms, Song & Dance. In Sound Scapes, children will combine music and writing to create their own fascinating stories. In World Drumming, students will learn songs and rhythms of different cultures while singing and dancing to the beat of the drum. Students entering grades 3-8 who play the violin, viola or cello can sign up for our exceptional Music Conservatory: Intermediate and Advanced Musician program taught by European-trained professional teachers and musicians. This highly-engaging half-day or full-day Instrumental Insights course for orchestra students is designed to advance student musicians’ musicality and performance skills through string pedagogy stressed in daily rehearsals and sectionals. Group lessons and repertoire sessions focus on topics such as sight reading, rhythmic reading, bowing techniques and additional rehearsals. Student musicians will work on new and traditional string ensemble literature and have an opportunity to perform on the Roberts Stage with faculty in sectional pieces presented in Ranney School’s Panther Hall. Students do not need to audition but will be interviewed to determine placement. Spaces are limited so don’t delay; register today for an exceptional skill-building orchestra experience! Dr. Dorothy Sobieski, Ranney School’s All-Orchestra Director, is the master teacher in the summer Music Conservatory and eagerly adds that “students greatly benefit from participating in these intensive music programs over the summer and enjoy having the opportunity to learn and play Broadway tunes and popular music in addition to classical music.” If your child is interested in taking music courses at Ranney School this summer, sign up today at www. ranneyschool.org/summerprograms.

Lincroft School held its second annual Science Fair in February. This year, the science fair was expanded to include all grade levels, Kindergarten through 5th Grade. The science fair provided an opportunity for kids to experience science in an engaging and interactive way that compliments the curriculum in many classrooms. This year’s entries included a wide variety of projects from crystal formations to exothermic reactions. In addition, 4th and 5th graders participated in an afterschool enrichment program that helped them focus on creating a hypothesis, doing research and collecting and

The Lincroft PTA, sponsors of this event, would like to thank the event organizers Karen Whitaker, Christine Haney and Christy DeMarco and all the parent volunteers who helped make the science fair a reality. SAINT LEO THE GREAT SCHOOL ‘CRAZY SOCK DAY’ CHARITY EVENT On February 21, Saint Leo the Great School students participated in an event that was nicknamed “crazy sock day”. This event was sponsored by the school’s CALL club, which stands for Community, Action, Leo, Lions. The club brings together students from grades 6 through 8. Its mission is to heighten students’ awareness of pressing social problems in the community and to assist them in organizing fundraiser events for people in need. This day allowed the children to show off their playful side by wearing crazy colored, bright, or nonmatching socks to school, however they all knew that there was a deeper meaning to this seemingly silly event. The students who wore silly socks were required to bring

in a pair of socks to donate to charity. There were a total of 1,462 pairs of socks collected. All socks collected were donated to the Covenant House of New Jersey. The Covenant House is a charitable organization that helps homeless teens and its subdivision, the Raphael House, helps homeless mothers and infants. Mrs. Rosemary Devine, a 5th grade teacher at Saint Leo the Great School and mentor of the CALL club, said, “I feel it’s important to teach the children that there are many fun ways to get their community involved in social activities, whether it’s by donating goods or by raising funds for those who are less fortunate. The CALL club allows students to do just that.”

ub Scouts from Holmdel’s Packs 131 and 331 trekked north in January to West Point for the great Scout Knight “camp-in” organized by the U.S. Military Academy’s Cadets. While theychecked in, some of the Cadets were brave enough to don sumo suits and let the Scouts try to tackle them. After being piled on enough times, the Cadets handed the sumo suits over to the Scouts so the boys could take their turns at being tackled by each other. Then it was onto the Army vs. American basketball game (unfortunately our host Army lost, but our boys had a great time). Next up, a tour of the Army Sports Hall of Fame where their tour guide, 1st year cadet Cameron, patiently answered all the questions scouts threw at him. After a pizza dinner, the boys got some time to run around at the “campsite” on the Foley Center’s indoor practice field. There was more sumo wrestling, several impromptu football games, and a lot of less structured running around before lights out in their tents inside Foley Center.
In the morning, the cadets were eager to wake up the Scouts bright and early for a round of PT (physical training) - most of the boys were still in pajamas as they were rounded to the middle of the field for pushups. After PT they broke camp and headed for breakfast at the very historic West Point mess hall, a very special opportunity not afforded to visitors. They enjoyed the scout-named “Best Breakfast Ever” and learned more about some of the West Point traditions. Then there was Mass at the beautiful Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity, which included a special blessing for the Paratroopers before heading home. The weekend was entirely run by the cadets who surely have more than enough to do already with their course load and other academy commitments. Interacting with them was the high point for the scouts, and everyone is looking forward to next year’s Scout Knight! Visit http://holmdel131.mypack.us/ for more info.

n March 1, Saint Leo the Great School’s PTA hosted its annual Spring Gala at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale. This year’s theme was titled “A Shore Thing”, with a decor inspired by scenes from the Jersey shore. The evening started with a cocktail hour where guests mingled over drinks and appetizers after which they were escorted into the main ballroom for their assigned seating. Principal Cornelius Begley addressed the crowd with a speech during which he started by thanking everybody for their presence. He then extended special thanks to the event’s co-chairs, Mrs. Kristen Dinnell and Mrs. Marybeth Kwapniewski, as well as the PTA president, Mrs. Dawn Di Re who has provided the school with four years of service. Father John Folchetti then gave a blessing for the attendees leading them in saying grace. All proceeds from this entertaining night went to Saint Leo the Great School’s PTA. The money raised allows the PTA to purchase much needed items for the students. Last year’s raised funds were utilized to purchase new furniture and equipment for various classrooms, including computers and interactive white boards for the newly added 1st and 4th grade classrooms. The same funds allowed the school to install security upgrades and build a brand new library media center with computers to outfit the students’ educational research. The annual spring Gala is a great event that brings parents of Saint Leo the Great School together in a fun social atmosphere while at the same time raising money for those who count the most to them, their children.

PROVIDED BY THE CHARLES LAFITTE FOUNDATION
Monmouth County Couple Matches Donations Dollar for Dollar
T
he Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF) will host its 11th Annual Charity Golf Classic on Monday, June 30 at the exclusive Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ. All proceeds from the event will benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of New Jersey, a non-profit, volunteerbased organization that assists the court and child welfare systems to ensure the safety and well being of children who are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. “More than 13,000 children in New Jersey are living in foster care. That is why the mission of CASA and the services it provides are so vital in our community. CASA volunteers work tirelessly to ensure every child has a caring environment where they can grow and thrive,” said Jeffrey Citron, co-founder, The Charles Lafitte Foundation. “Every child needs someone to advocate and look out for them. We can help make that happen.” Suzanne and Jeffrey Citron, CLF founders, will match each donation from the golf outing, dollar for dollar. Last year’s event raised a record $730,000 for the Society
S
for the Prevention of Teen Suicide. Over the past 11 years, the Charity Golf Classic has raised more than $5 million to improve the lives of countless individuals. CASA currently reaches about 3,000 children a year. Its volunteers work to ensure the safety and well-being of New Jersey’s most vulnerable citizens – abused and neglected youth in placement. After being assigned to a case comprised of either a single child or a family of children, CASA volunteers advocate exclusively on behalf of a child’s best interests in court. Specifically, the funds raised at CLF’s Charity Golf Classic will support the implementation of CASA’s Peer Coordinator Model, an organizational change that will exponentially increase the number of children served. The model uses seasoned volunteers to support, coach and supervise advocate volunteers without having to significantly increase staff and budget. “CASA of New Jersey is honored that the Charles Lafitte Foundation has selected us as this year’s beneficiary. Proceeds will give us the resources to serve significantly more children, and will help increase public awareness of the issues they face, the
work of CASA and the child welfare and court systems charged with protecting these children. We look forward to our partnership with the Foundation and the positive, widespread impact it will have on CASA services to foster children across New Jersey,” said Rita Gulden, MSW, Executive Director, CASA of NJ. CASA volunteers work alongside attorneys, social workers, teachers, therapists, doctors and family members in the child’s life to provide regular updates to the court. And, they remain on the case for as long as it takes until the child in placed in a safe, permanent home. The Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF) supports innovative and effective ways of helping people help themselves and others around them to achieve healthy, satisfying and enriched lives. Donations of any amount are welcome and will be matched by CLF. aint Saint John Vianney High School is partnering with Brookdale Community College to offer students a unique opportunity to gain college credits. SJVHS has developed a program called the Early College Academy which will allow 25 students per year to graduate with an Associates degree in Social Science from Brookdale when they graduate from SJVHS. “It’s important to stay on the cutting edge of what is happening academically. We want to try something different that no one else is offering,” President Joseph Deroba. The program was designed to give
students an advantage in gaining college credits as well as experience a more challenging academic schedule. When a student completes an associate degree, all 60 credits will transfer to any New Jersey state colleges and universities. Transferrable credits to out of state colleges will be determined by each school’s transfer policy. If the student continues their bachelors degree in a similar field, this can cut down college time by up to two years and significantly reduce the cost of college tuition. Students in the ECA will attend SJVHS for all of their classes until their senior year.
They will then take a combination of classes on Brookdale’s campus as well as at SJVHS. The ECA program through Brookdale is adding to SJVHS already rigorous curriculum along with Advance Placement and Dual Enrollment Classes. “This is a great opportunity to work with Brookdale and a chance to challenge our students even more. Students will get to experience college courses starting their freshman year of high school which will give them an advantage over other high school students, “Principal Steven DiMezza. The program will kick off in September 2014 with the incoming freshman class.
