If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

fter a long winter of extra cold weather and snow, spring has finally sprung. I think we are all ready for warmer temperatures, and the anticipated weather will ensure us to enjoy the delights of springtime. Monmouth County is a very exciting place, especially in the spring and summer. As always, our upcoming issues will highlight all the local things to do with friends and family. Something to look forward to – the 17th annual Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival located in Holmdel, is a fun-filled, eclectic and free event for the entire family, which will be held on May 3, 2015, more details can be found on page 46. Also, the fifth edition of the Stately Homes by-the-Sea Designer Show House is scheduled to take place from April 28 through May 31, 2015 – this anticipated event will benefit the Visiting Nurse Association, check out more information on page 28. If you haven’t already heard, a proposed soccer complex in our area is causing quite the uproar in both Holmdel and Colts Neck. We received many Letters to the Editor this month from concerned citizens of both towns, they are printed on pages 22 and 24. Did you know you can be a part of Community Magazine? Every month we receive ideas from countless readers – we always invite you to send in your thoughts to info@communitymagazinenj.com. If you would like to speak to me directly, shoot me an email at the address below. With more and more events being planned for the warm weather, make sure you follow us on Facebook (CommunityMagNJ) as we keep you updated about Monmouth County happenings. All my best,
Carolyn Burtnick

ne of Holmdel Recreation’s classes, “Cooking with Antonietta Picascia,” hosted a fundraising luncheon on March 10 for the Hope for Children Foundation in honor of Timothy McDonnell. The homemade Italian lunch, which included salad, pasta, and dessert, was held at the Holmdel Community Center. “There are a lot of good people here and everyone has been really amazing by offering to help with the luncheon,” said Chef Antonietta. She acknowledged the cooperative efforts of the luncheon sponsors from Abbate Bakery, Cracked Olive, Delicious Orchards, Dearborn Market, J&M Bakery, and ShopRite of Hazlet. “I knew that doing this fundraiser was going to be a little challenging since other fundraisers had already been done for Timmy. Nonetheless, I felt I needed to do something to help. Tim McDonnell Sr. was very helpful in guiding me to the Hope for Children Foundation since they had been helpful to his family during Timmy’s ordeal.” Chef Antonietta said that the cooking class had hoped to raise about $1,000, but instead, they nearly doubled that. “All the women involved did an amazing job with the food and all that went with it. We are also very grateful to all the businesses that donated,” she said. Committeeman Joseph Ponisi shared, “It is a miracle that Tim McDonnell is progressing so well and has come so far. And it is wonderful that Antonietta and the cooking class decided to run an event like this to raise funds to help families. This is just another example of the outpouring of help from the community. Holmdel is a tight knit community and I am very proud to represent residents of Holmdel because of events like this one.”

Clare McDonnell was grateful that the luncheon honored her son Tim. “The best part is that this luncheon helps so many children.” As for an update on Tim, she said, “He is making such progress! He is cracking a few jokes now and the surgeon said that is great because humor is usually something that doesn’t come back.” The family is waiting to see if Tim can begin another program that will continue to aid in his progress. Hope for Children Foundation President Eric Hinds acknowledged everyone involved in this event. “This was a great honor and very generous offer from the McDonnell family. They are special people who are dealing with a long recovery for their son. However, they felt the community has done so much for them that they wanted to again give back. We take these funds in honor of Timmy and promise to use those funds to help another local family the way I know they would want it!”

Your Partner’s Snoring Is Not Something To Ignore PROVIDED BY MERIDIAN HEALTH
We often make light of the fact that our partner snores. I have heard friends wonder, only half joking, why it is that their partner who snores is always the first one to fall asleep. Snoring is no laughing matter and can be indicative of sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder, which not only compromises getting a good night’s sleep; but, can also have negative health consequences like weight gain and memory loss. There is evidence that sleep apnea leads to serious health risks; including high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, certain cancers and even sudden death. Sleep apnea occurs in all age groups and both men and women can be diagnosed with it. It is more common in men, it seems to be that sleep apnea is harder to detect in women. It is estimated that as many as 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. Adrian M. Pristas, M.D., board certified in pulmonary disease and sleep medicine, and part of the medical staff at Bayshore Community Hospital, recommends consulting with a sleep specialist if snoring is loud enough that it disrupts you or your partner’s sleep, if you notice that you seem to periodically choke or stop breathing while you are sleeping, if you wake up during the night feeling short of breath, or if you find yourself falling asleep at work or behind the wheel. The Meridian Center for Sleep Medicine at Bayshore Community Hospital is part of Meridian Neuroscience, and accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and is led by board certified sleep medicine physicians and staffed by a team of trained sleep technologists – who employ a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating sleep disorders, including sleep apnea. In addition, our dedicated nurse navigator is available to assist patients through the process from diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, and education. If you would like more information about the Meridian Centers for Sleep Medicine or expert advice and related information to ensure you get the best night’s sleep possible visit http://meridianwellrested.blogspot.com/ or call 1-800-DOCTORS to find a sleep expert.

Lincroft resident Lisa Miele will run in the Boston Marathon to benefit pediatric cancer.
Lincroft resident Lisa Miele has dreamed of running in the Boston Marathon since she began running in July, 2010. “The Boston Marathon is the most elite road race in the world,” said Miele. She ran her first marathon in Napa Valley, California in March, 2014 and her second in New York City in November, 2014. Training for the Boston Marathon began December, 2014. Miele decided to run this marathon to benefit pediatric cancer. Her research in this category brought her to One Mission. She explained, “This organization allocates funding and services that directly benefit children with cancer, their families, and the medical community that compassionately cares for them.” One Mission also funds programs and services that lift the spirits of patients and their families, help the healing and recovery process and make life more livable during treatment and hospitalization. Miele noted that some of the programs include arts and crafts, yoga, spa and sports days, game nights and Decorate My Room (where a hospital room is redecorated to make it feel more like home). She added, “One Mission offers financial support for families, which is extremely important given the fact that over 50% of families diagnosed with pediatric cancer will file bankruptcy.” Not only is Miele running the Boston Marathon on behalf of One Mission, but also in memory of Jude and Thad Walz of Middletown, who were born November 19, 2013. These tiny warriors each fought a strong and courageous fight to live but sadly, did not win their battle. Miele, who is a friend of the boys’ mother Marybeth Walz, said, “From the moment they were born I watched them both fight to live. Their strength and courage brought out so much goodness in our community. I am running the Boston Marathon as a tribute to them and to the many other children that must fight cancer every year in our country. Running 26.2 miles will be easy compared to what boys and girls face each day while receiving treatment to try and destroy the monster that is invading their bodies.”
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
LINCROFT RESIDENT WILL RUN IN BOSTON MARATHON FOR ONE MISSION
Miele shared that runners have a saying – “No matter how fast or how slow, when you cross the finish line of a marathon it will change your life forever.” She found this to be true after her first two marathons and it is true of this one. “Training for the Boston Marathon has changed my life in ways that I never imagined. I have become more educated on the many frightening statistics that surround pediatric cancer. For instance, 1 in 300 children will be diagnosed with cancer; and there is little funding provided for the development of new medications to help these children. In fact, only two medications have been developed specifically for children with cancer in the past 20 years. This was startling to me as I have built a career in clinical research over the last 21 years. I have met families who have lost children to this terrible disease and survivors.” With a passion and drive to help children with cancer for the long term, Miele said, “Running the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2015 will be an honor for me. Every step I take will be in honor of the 40,000 kids in the United States that are currently fighting, and in memory of many children we have lost to this disease. Pediatric cancer affects the future of our world. We need to make it a national priority. Fighting cancer is a horrible battle for anyone but especially for kids. Kids can’t fight cancer alone and One Mission makes sure they don’t have to, which is paramount to me. Please donate to One Mission. I promise to do my part on April 20, 2015 during the Boston Marathon, but I need your help and so do the other 900 children One Mission helps each year.” To learn more, contact Lisa.Miele@me.com or www. crowdrise.com/onemissionboston2015/fundraiser/lisamiele.

RANNEY MIDDLE SCHOOLERS TO TAKE NYC STAGES IN BROADWAY WORKSHOP
Olivia Batista of Colts Neck, who played Miss Lavinia in Ranney Middle School’s Musical “A Little Princess”, is at the center of the image.
Congratulations to Olivia Batista ’21 (Colts Neck) and Samantha Riebesell ’19 (Manalapan) for being selected to work with the iTheatrics Broadway Junior team this summer in New York City. iTheatrics is the creative team behind the Broadway Jr. series of musicals, many of which have been performed at Ranney School in Tinton Falls. After auditioning on March 7, 2015, along with hundreds of other students in grades 3-12 from around the country, these talented girls have been offered a coveted spot in the iTheatrics summer intensive workshop. Each participant will receive a white race t-shirt and color packet. At the finish line, runners will have a chance to open their color packets together to share a blast of color with their friends, family, and everyone else around them while a DJ spins some tunes. This untimed run is designed as a family fun event for runners and walkers of all ages and levels. Proceeds from the event will benefit PTO-funded programs for the children of the Colts Neck school district. A children’s fun run is also being planned. Letters to the Editor “SAVE HOLMDEL VILLAGE” FROM NOISE, LIGHTS AND TRAFFIC! Please be aware and informed that Holmdel Village is at risk. The Holmdel Township Committee at their March 3rd meeting introduced changes for land use in the R-4R zone that surrounds the Holmdel Village. The new allowable uses in the R-4R zone are for a “for profit” sports facility that can and more than likely will generate in excess of 812 vehicular trips on an already overcrowded route 520. During tournaments there could be upwards to 700 players and how many more cars? Where will they put them on this country road with no shoulders? 8 story high lights will enable the facility to be open from early in the morning until late at night, creating noise from early spring to late fall. There will be NO relief! This is a complete violation of this rural area for corporate interests. The Ordinance introduced on March 3, 2015 is slated for PUBLIC HEARING on April 14, 2015. The pending application that would benefit from the new allowable uses is for a 55 foot high structure, 80 foot high lights, 406 parking spaces and up to 10,000 square feet of retail space. For more information and to get involved, go to www.SaveHolmdel.com. Dorothy Hoyt-Rehm

THE SAVE HOLMDEL VILLAGE (SHV) team in connection with countless Holmdel residents are against the proposal from Holmdel Township Committee for changes to (R4R) rural conservation lands. Under the proposal, such lands could be utilized for “Conditional Uses” - such as the mega Sports Complex proposed by Capelli Sports on R4R land in Holmdel Village on Main Street /520. This complex will not be an open area for residents and will not be run by Holmdel Township. It will be PRIVATELY OWNED, operated to maximize profits - with up to 8 full-size competition soccer fields, artificial turf, a 55 foot indoor facility, 80-foot stadium lights, parking for 400+ cars, and interior roads. It literally resembles what you would see at an Olympic Park not in the heart of beautiful Holmdel Village. Beyond the dramatic negative impacts on our area (from materially increased traffic, noise, glowing stadium lights, degraded water quality, out-of-towners, etc), it is VERY important that ALL Holmdel citizens know this change to R4R property classification (or any future such changes) could allow facilities similar to this (regardless of scale) to pop-up virtually anywhere around town. Before long, all of the beautiful areas that were the primary reasons we chose to live here - and have come to love - could be lost forever. Importantly, this is not a Democrat vs. Republican issue - everyone is rightfully concerned. This ordinance must be stopped to prevent facilities like this from popping up all over our beautiful Holmdel community. COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Holmdel’s Fire Company #2 appears to have taken strong actions to influence the outcome of last November’s election for Township Committee. Recently six members of the Fire Company were charged by Holmdel Police with stealing campaign signs prior to the November Election. One of the alleged perpetrators is the Assistant Chief (son of the Chief) of Fire Co. #2. In addition, a day before the election, a robo call went to Holmdel residents from the Chief or Assistant Chief and included claims that Fire Co. #1 was “misrepresenting” its actions. Holmdel’s 2014 Township Committee dissolved Holmdel’s volunteer Fire Co. #1 in Southern Holmdel. For years we had two 24-7 fire departments depending fully on volunteers. The Township Committee claimed that Fire Co. #1, covering the Southern part of town, was not always available and members were not properly trained. The claims concerning training were and are nonsense! And Fire Co. # 1’s record of availability is not bad for a volunteer force. The opposition Candidates in the 2014 election questioned the closing of Fire Co. #1. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why members of Holmdel’s Fire Co. # 2 would want to make sure that the 2014 Mayor and his committeeman running mate would be re-elected. As the only fire company left in town, a 24-7 fire department will undoubtedly and inevitably become a taxpayer-paid-for fire department. Mr. Charles Weber, spokesman for our County Prosecutors Office, has stated that the six men are being charged with criminal mischief and fourth-degree theft. Such charges are entirely inadequate and the telephone calls, placed just prior to the election deserve investigation. Attempting to influence an election by stealing signs deserves major penalties, at least, for the leaders. The telephone calls, just prior to the election, should be investigated and may deserve a larger penalty. Arguing that the stealing of signs was nothing more than the destruction that happens prior to most elections is outrageous! This action was dramatically larger. Signs were repeatedly removed from key locations. It should also be recognized that, a majority of those charged are not residents of Holmdel. This stealing was clearly an attempt to influence an election and the leaders deserve significant penalties. Without the last minute telephone calls and the removal of the signs, we might have a much different Township Committee in Holmdel today. Holmdel residents and taxpayers should be very proud of their nonpartisan nonpolitical Police Department. Without regard to any political considerations, the Holmdel Police Department followed through and enforced the law. However, we should expect more than minor reprimands from our prosecutors, including the investigation of the last minute telephone calls. We should also ask our elected officials to reconsider the closing of Fire Co. #1. Holmdel residents should be very concerned today about the character of those who may be entering their home in the event of an emergency requiring Fire Co. attention. Anne Morrison & Larrabee Smith

Letters to the Editor cont. HERE WE GO AGAIN. Politicians spending our tax dollars on big impact projects touted as commercial ratables, which they say will lower our tax burden. It has been proven that the ratable chase is a losing one for taxpayers because more development brings the need for infrastructure improvements, more road maintenance and increased police activity. The Capelli Sports Complex alone will have an enormous negative impact on the entire area with regard to noise, traffic and our water supply. Additionally, the commercial conditional uses added to all the R-4R parcels along the 34/520 corridors will make it vulnerable to other massive enterprises thereby measurably degrading the quality of life for residents in the area. It is my understanding that the Monmouth County Planning Board has “signed off” on the project’s impact to the 520/34 intersection as being “minimal”. A sports complex of this size will have “minimal impact”? Does this make any sense at all? People of Colts Neck, Holmdel and Marlboro should be very wary of how this project has come about, and how it has come this far without the public being aware of it. Can one assume that the County Board of Freeholders knew of the project several months ago? So, why didn’t the former Mayor of Holmdel and the former Mayor of Colts Neck, both on the Freeholder Board, see fit to alert their constituents to this project as well as the zoning changes that will affect the entire Holmdel Village area as well as the Route 34 corridor going through Holmdel and Colts Neck. The former Mayor of Holmdel is not only on the Freeholder Board, but is on the Holmdel Planning Board as well. Do you sense something wrong here? Evelyn Quincannon

I WRITE TO DRAW attention to the strange happenings surrounding a proposed soccer complex on the Inverness property on Route 520 near the intersection with Route 34. Formerly a farm, the property has been approved for development of approximately 18 homes. Recently however, and without proper neighbor notification, the Holmdel Township Council under the leadership of Mayor Impreveduto and Deputy Mayor Hinds made 17 adjustments to the 4-R4 zoning including changes to the required property setbacks and a provision for up to 10,000 square feet of retail space. Immediately after these zoning adjustments were administered, Capelli Sports of Carlstadt petitioned the planning board to build a turf soccer complex. The proposal requires an additional 12 zoning adjustments including twenty-eight 80-ft high light stanchions, 67-square foot illuminated signage, construction of 5 turf soccer fields, and 406 parking spaces. The submission from Capelli sports arrived just one month after the zoning adjustments made by the Mayor and the Town Council. No project of this magnitude is assembled in just a month’s time. So it is clear that the Council members had advanced knowledge of, and were working with Capelli Sports, on the proposed complex and adjusted the allowed 4-4R usages accordingly.

HOLMDEL SPORTS COMPLEX: PRIVATE PROFIT AT PUBLIC COST? I am concerned about the proposed Holmdel sports complex along Route 520, between Holmdel Road and Route 34. My family moved to Colts Neck more than 30 years ago, attracted by its rural character. Holmdel has consistently been a partner, protecting against special interest agendas that threaten the rare natural beauty of surrounding woods and farms. The proposal for a private sports complex represents a new test; its support by the Holmdel Town Council, a puzzling reversal of form. Complex sponsors ask for variances: 80 feet tall stadium lights; 55 feet tall buildings; an outsized, lighted entry sign. Its character is completely inconsistent with surrounding parks. The implication: this complex needs distinctive size, scope, and advertising to attract enough traffic for financial viability. Traffic would likely be regional in nature; out-of-towners would benefit and local residents suffer the consequences. Prior to Colts Neck, our family lived in small towns in Washington State and Ohio that had natural beauty rivaling that of Colts Neck and Holmdel. Developers pushed projects that ultimately changed the character of these communities from “gentrified rural” to “bustling suburbia”, replete with traffic congestion and an increasingly frenzied lifestyle. Fundamentally, the interests of long-standing residents were compromised for the illusion of progress: an example of the “ratables chase”. If the sports complex is successful, further infrastructure changes will be needed; if not, remediation costs must be borne. Either way, ask yourself: “Who really pays?” Richard Orriss

Concerned citizens should know that there is a name for this type of targeted land use adjustment. It is called Spot Zoning, which is both improper and unethical. This, coupled with the fact that the original zoning adjustments were made without proper neighbor notification, shows just how far the Town Council are willing to go to see this project through; bypassing proper procedures and failing to solicit feedback from the community. Luckily, due to the improper notification (and under the pressure of a lawsuit), the Town Council now under the leadership of Mayor Hinds resubmitted the zoning adjustments providing the Holmdel community a much-needed opportunity to voice their opposition to the project at the April 14th Town Council meeting and at subsequent Planning Board sessions. Wake-up Holmdel! And let the Mayor, the Town Council, and the Planning Board hear your opposition to this proposed radical shift in character to the southern portion of Holmdel. Or live forever with the consequences. Keith Hawkins

Fifth Edition of
STATELY HOMES BY-THE-SEA
Designer Show House
to Benefit Visiting Nurse Association Health Group
One of Rumson’s oldest estates opens its doors to the public for the first time.
BLITHEWALD, A HISTORIC TREASURE from the Gilded Age nestled in the picturesque, waterside town of Rumson, New Jersey is the setting for the fifth edition of Stately Homes by-the-Sea Designer Show House. Among the region’s most anticipated designer show house events, Stately Homes by-the-Sea is scheduled to take place from April 28 through May 31, 2015 and will benefit Visiting Nurse Association Health Group. More than 40 of the tri-state area’s leading interior designers, decorators and landscape artists will transform the over 10,000 square foot nineteenth century mansion and surrounding four acres; melding together the creativity and design of two centuries and creating another chapter in Blithewald’s storied legacy. “The elegant beauty of Blithewald has withstood the test of time”, said Alice DiFiglia who joins Kathy Cashes and Kathleen Smith as co-chairs of the event. “We are so fortunate to have access to such a remarkable venue to showcase both the latest in contemporary design and the indispensable services provided by the VNA Health Group.” “As this beautiful home has stood fast for over a 150 years, so the VNA Health Group has remained a constant presence for over a century, dedicated to providing compassionate home care and hospice to all in need,” Ms. Cashes commented. “VNA Health Group appreciates the time, talent and generous contributions given by the Stately Homes by-the-Sea Show House committee, sponsors, designers, tour participants and volunteers,” said Steven H. Landers, MD, MPH, President and CEO of VNA Health Group. “This spectacular event is a wonderful way to bring together designers and the public in support of our mission to help individuals and families achieve their best level of health and well-being through care in their homes and communities.” Built in 1883 by David B. Keeler, one of the first successful financiers to be drawn to the beauty of the seaside enclave, Blithewald hearkens back to the dawn of the Great Estates of Rumson. The design by noted architect Edward L. Woodruff and renowned landscape designer Nathan Barrett features the

rich architectural details and splendid gardens that would become emblematic of the grand mansions of the era. A unique leaded glass portico and luxurious foyer with oversized fireplace, herringbone patterned hardwood floors and opulent moldings conjure up visions of arriving guests in Edwardian-era formal attire. State leaders likely gathered for fireside strategy sessions in the sumptuous library with elaborately carved wood paneling and beamed ceiling. The rose patterned stained glass skylight, breezy sleeping porch and an abundance of French doors opening out to the wide brick terraces call to mind salt water scented summer days. Perfect for evening strolls, the extensive formal sunken gardens feature classical sculptures, reflecting pool and fountain, as well as a swimming pool and arbor. A vintage style tennis court completes the lush grounds. “Garden enthusiasts will discover a special gem at Blithewald”, commented Ms. Smith. “Nathan Barrett was one of the most innovative and esteemed landscape architects of the era and much of his original design has been preserved throughout the years.” Along with touring Blithewald and the grounds, attendees can round out their day with lunch at the Show House Café and shopping at the show house designer boutiques. Stately Homes by-the-Sea is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., plus new evening hours on Thursday until 7:00 p.m. There are no refunds and no rain dates for this event. Please note that the Show House is not handicapped accessible. Children under the age of 12 will not be admitted. Additional information on the Show House, events and ticket sales can be found online at www.statelyhomesbythesea.com. A celebratory gala will herald the grand opening of Stately Homes by-the-Sea at Blithewald, Saturday evening April 25, 2015. Stately Homes by-the-Sea is proud to welcome sponsors Traditional Home, designNJ and NBC TV’s Open House. Stately Homes by-the-Sea debuted in 2007 at Scothigh Farms (the former Metcalf Estate). Subsequent Show Houses followed at Sheep’s Run, designed by the famed architect Harrie T. Lindgerg in 2009, at the historic Holly Hill in Locust, NJ in 2011, and at the 30’s era Tudor style Hartshorne Mansion in Little Silver, NJ in 2013. The Show House has gained wide acclaim attracting more than 40,000 attendees in total and has become a coveted showcase for those in the design world. Stately Homes by-the-Sea Designer Show House is presented by Visiting Nurse Association Health Group. Founded in 1912, Visiting Nurse Association Health Group is the largest nonprofit home care, hospice, and community-based service organization in New Jersey. With more than 1,400 employees, VNA Health Group serves more than 120,000 individuals each year throughout New Jersey. Colts Neck Academic Team
Going to Nationals The Cedar Drive Middle School Academic Bowl team scored big at the Charter Challenge in Wilmington, Delaware on March 7, earning a coveted spot at the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Dallas, Texas in May. Eighteen students from Cedar Drive, along with club advisor Andrew Czerwinski, traveled to the Charter School of Wilmington to compete in two divisions, Newcomer and National. A field of 44 teams competed from five different states, including New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The Charter Challenge is a regional qualifier for the NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournaments) Middle School National Championship Tournament. NAQT organizes middle school, high school, community college, and college national quiz bowl championships in North America. Quiz bowl is a Jeopardy-style competition where students answer questions ranging from the middle school curriculum to current events, sports, and popular culture. Three Cedar Drive teams competed, two in the Newcomer Division, and one in the National. The National Division Team dominated the preliminary round with a 5-0 record, giving them a top seed position going into the playoffs. After battling several top-seeded teams in exciting playoff competition, Cedar Drive finished with the second best record of the tournament (7-2) and a 6th place overall finish. The team’s strong performance placed them in the top 15% of the teams in their bracket which qualified them to participate in the national tournament. The Cedar Drive National Division
Team is comprised of 8th graders Laura Babiak, Steven Liu, Elliott Nguyen, Darren Petrosino, Sam Pridmore, and 7th grader Matthew Bell. In individual scoring, Cedar Drive students also excelled, with Steven Liu finishing with the 2nd highest individual score of the tournament, and Darren Petrosino placing 6th overall. In the Newcomer Division, the Cedar Drive teams competed very well and gained valuable experience in their first regional tournament. Jimmy Powell was the top scorer for Cedar Drive in this division. The Academic Bowl team has also been a stand out in local competitions, taking the top spot in a 26 team field at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) tournament in October, and placing third and fifth at the recent competition in March. “We are very proud of our entire Academic Bowl team and their impressive accomplishments. These students dedicate their time and efforts after school hours and continue to represent themselves, their families, and the Colts Neck School District in such a positive light,” said Colin Rigby, Principal of Cedar Drive Middle School. “We look forward to continued success from the team at the national tournament.” The team is now preparing to compete in the NAQT Middle School Championship Tournament in Dallas in May, where they will face the best of the best from around the country. Congratulations to the entire Academic Bowl Team and advisor Andrew Czerwinski for a successful year!

NEW YORK CITY IS CALLING... College graduation nears and graduates find themselves working in NYC and hoping to relocate. And, as the graduates move on, many families find it is the right time to seek a new adventure in NYC as well. Whether it is a studio rental or the purchase of a loft, the process does not have to be overwhelming if you find the right people to help. Johnny Lal and Rosalie Alario of the Johnny Lal team have consistently been one of the top sales and rental teams at Citi Habitats. There is a simple reason for this-both emphasize the personal touch, make the search less onerous, and even stay available after the transaction is final. Johnny Lal joined the company almost twenty years ago and has closed over 3,500 sales and rental transactions in his tenure with CitiHabitats. His accomplishments give inspiration to all who know him, and his straightforward, honest, client focused approach proves to be a winning formula. “We don’t give up if we don’t find the right place for a client on the first showing,” comments Johnny, “We just keep on working harder until they are happy.” Rosalie Alario’s fast rise to success in real estate comes from her hard work and determination to please her clients. Often asked if she ever takes time off, Rosalie is the most diligent and dedicated broker you will find. Rosalie states, “There is nothing more satisfying than the happiness of a client who has just found their dream home.” Her dedication has resulted in the majority of her clients being repeat customers and referrals. The team specializes in both sales and rentals in the Relocation division and seeks to build lasting relationships with everyone who has rented, long after they have moved in. Clients receive email market
updates and follow up calls throughout the year. This personalized attention has earned them countless referrals, which now account for more than eighty percent of their total business. It is also a testament to this personal service that Johnny and Rosalie have many repeat clients. Most recently Johnny helped a family find its dream home, an $8.2 million dollar loft in TriBeCa, the same clients who first rented a home from Johnny and returned to him when it was time to buy. The team certainly understands the relocation process. Rosalie was born and raised in Colts Neck and has always been drawn to “the city that never sleeps”, where she now resides in Kips Bay. The City is filled with so much energy and the opportunities are endless. Daniela’s Wish Grants Birthday Party
For One Special Young Lady STORY SUSAN MURPHY
D
aniela’s Wish gave a surprise eighteenth birthday party to Alexis McGrantham on February 22, 2015 at the South Wall Firehouse Banquet Hall. With the help and generosity of local business owners in the community, Daniela’s Wish held the birthday party for 75 people which included family and friends. The “wish” was made for Alexis by her mother, Kim. Kim explained why the party was so important. “Alexis, the youngest of my two children, was born three months early with multiple craniofacial abnormalities and a tumor under her brain, which was benign. Throughout her life she has had to undergo many surgeries. The biggest surgery of all was the day before her eighteenth birthday. Following that, she was finally able to breathe while sleeping without a CPAP machine; and it also aligned her mouth so she could chew without choking.” Kim had to focus her attention on helping Alexis get well from this difficult surgery, so a birthday party could not be planned. After reaching out to Daniela’s Wish and being told they would grant the surprise party, Kim told her daughter they were going out for pizza. “I quickly tried to put makeup and jewelry on her right before we left and she was wondering why I was doing that,” said Kim. She noted that on the way there, she pretended to get a text from Mike Perrone, the manager of Taste of Italy who asked that she bring milk for the party being held at the hall. “When we got there, I told Alexis that her favorite ‘cute fireman’ was
34
working that night and she could come in with me to say hello to everyone really quick. She didn’t seem to think anything of that until she walked in and found out the party was for her!” explained Kim. As for the reaction of the guest of honor, Alexis said, “I felt very happy! I was so surprised! And I was completely shocked because I didn’t believe the party was for me!” Alexis said some of her gifts included a jewelry box, necklaces, makeup, hair beading kit, lotion and perfume, numerous gift cards, and money. If she had to pick one word to describe the party and how she felt, Alexis said, “AWESOME!!” Tears of joy and gratitude were shared by Alexis and Kim as well as many of the guests. Mother and daughter thought the night was perfect and definitely felt it was a dream come true. Two students from Colts Neck High School, where Alexis is a senior, also attended. Kim noted, “Steven Caruso and Giovanni Zefferino, whom Alexis absolutely adored, used to keep her company during her study hall every day. They pretty much gave her the biggest reason to go to school each day and really made her feel special.”

Spring Gala an Oscar-Worthy Event
A
ll the stars were out for the Colts Neck PTO’s 32nd Annual Spring Gala on March 19, 2015 at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale. Over 230 guests walked the red carpet in true Hollywood style as they made their entrance to the gala, a long-standing tradition for the PTO and its largest fundraiser of the year. The evening kicked off with a cocktail hour, featuring the “Scarlet Letter” signature drink, followed by dinner and dancing. DJs from Xplosive Entertainment, back by popular demand, energized the ladies-only crowd throughout the evening.
36
Eagle Oaks Country Club was transformed into a glamorous Hollywood party through the creativity of the committee and talents of Louis Roros of Sayrewoods Floral and Event Design, who generously donated all of the elegant centerpieces for the evening. “We really had a lot of fun with this year’s red carpet theme,” explained Heather Tormey, Spring Gala Chair. “From the invitations and program to the décor, movie-themed baskets and paparazzi experience for guests, we were able to tie all the details together.” Sarah Stepic Pisani of Stepic Design brought out the Hollywood glamour theme with her chic design of the logo, program and signage for the event. Going home a winner was on everyone’s minds with all the incredible prizes on hand. Some of the

sought-after items included designer handbags, jewelry, sports tickets, electronics and home goods. Guests had over 150 opportunities to take home a prize from the event. In addition to the traditional gift basket raffle, there was a 50/50 and a guaranteed prize drawing, where guests could win some “star-studded swag” in the spirit of the evening’s theme. “We received such a great response from the community to our event this year and are so thankful to tonight’s sponsors, advertisers, families, groups, and individuals who have given so generously,” noted Tormey. “I am overwhelmed with a sense of pride to live and raise my family in a town where our community cares so much for our schools.”

Heartworm Disease:
AWARENESS & PREVENTION PROVIDED BY MICHELLE KAZDIN, VMD (PRACTICE LIMITED TO CARDIOLOGY) Heartworm disease is found all over the United States and many other countries around the world. It is more prevalent in warmer climates, but pets in the Northern United States can also be affected. In New Jersey, there is a relatively low incidence of heartworm. Heartworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm that migrates to and resides in the pulmonary arteries, or arteries of the lungs and the heart. It most commonly affects dogs, but cats can also be infected- even those living indoors. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes. Pets cannot transmit or catch heartworm disease directly from each other. When a mosquito bites an infected dog, the mosquito ingests microfilariae, which are a microscopic larval form of heartworms that are circulating in the blood of infected animals. The microfilariae grow and mature within the mosquito to a more advanced larval stage. After the larva has matured within the mosquito, they can be transmitted to, and infect, another animal. When the mosquito, containing the heartworm larvae bites another animal, the larvae will leave the mosquito and enter the blood stream of the new host. These heartworm larvae then continue to grow in the new host and over a period of 3 months eventually migrate to the lungs. When the heartworms have fully matured, they can reproduce within the host and form new microfilariae in the blood- which can be taken up by a mosquito again before infecting another individual. In affected individuals, heartworms cause damage to the blood vessels in the lungs, leading to inflammation, scarring, and high blood pressure in the arteries in the lungs (called pulmonary hypertension). Over time this can lead to heart enlargement and heart failure. Signs of patients with heartworm disease can range from occult disease, or no signs at all, to coughing, exercise intolerance, fainting/collapse, trouble breathing, or even death. Diagnosis is usually made initially with a heartworm test, which is a blood test that detects the presence of heartworms in the body. In cats, heartworm may be harder to detect so cats are often tested with a second blood test, which detects the body’s immune response to a heartworm. Other tests that may help your veterinarian with staging the disease include chest x-rays, echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) and in some cases blood chemistry/complete blood count and urinalysis. Heartworm disease can be prevented however by using monthly heartworm prevention. Depending on the region in which you live, it may be recommended for your pet seasonally or year round. Heartworm prevention should be started at 6 to 8 weeks of age and should be continued throughout life. Yearly heartworm tests given by your veterinarian are recommended to ensure protection from the disease. There are various types of heartworm prevention available including oral and topical formulations. Your veterinarian can choose one that is appropriate for your pet’s lifestyle. In dogs that are positive for heartworm, treatment may involve a series of injections to kill the worms, or if heavilyinfected, extraction of the worms. Unfortunately, in cats there are fewer options for treatment, as not all of the treatments available for dogs are safe for cats. In conclusion, in both dogs and cats, heartworm disease is a serious disease and can be life-threatening. The disease, and in some cases the treatments, can pose a risk for infected individuals. However, medication for heartworm prevention can be very effective and safe in preventing this disease. Discuss with your veterinarian about how you can keep your pet safe and healthy.

Newman Springs Dental Care Seeks to Raise Record Amount of Money During 2015 Smiles For Life Campaign Help improve a child’s life by having your teeth whitened. Sound easy? That’s because it is. The 17th annual Smiles For Life Campaign began on March 1, which means dental patients nationwide can brighten a child’s future just by visiting local Crown Council dentists Drs. Mitchel Friedman and Julia Cintron. The campaign runs from now until June 30, and 100% of the proceeds from teeth whitening procedures done at Newman Springs Dental Care are contributed directly to the Smiles for Life Foundation. This foundation helps fund worthy children’s charities and humanitarian work, both locally and around the world. As an additional incentive, each teeth whitening patient enjoys their smile brightening procedure at a discounted rate. Patients love the unique opportunity to improve the lives of children in need while also enhancing their own smile. Since its creation, the Crown Council’s Smiles For Life Campaign has raised over $34,500,000 for seriously ill, disabled and disadvantaged kids. Donations from last year alone totaled $1.5 million. Smiles For Life hopes to break the $36 million mark for total collections during this year’s drive. “Smiles For Life allows a person to help children in need by doing something that benefits them as well,” explains Greg Anderson, director of the Crown Council. “Drs. Friedman and Cintron along with their enthusiastic team donate their time and expertise, while Ultradent generously provides all Opalescence whitening products. You receive a brighter smile, and, best of all, provide children with a brighter future.” This is a wonderful and easy way for members of the community to help make a real difference in a child’s life. Anyone interested in donating directly without teeth whitening can do so online. Participants can also refer friends to Newman Springs Dental Care by linking to the Smiles for Life site, making it easier than ever to give the gift of a new smile to friends and loved ones, while also giving hope to children in need. Half of the donations raised by Newman Springs Dental Care are given to the Parker Family Health Center in Red Bank. INDIAN HILL SCHOOL PLG SPONSORS ANNUAL BOARDWALK FUNDRAISER
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
LEFT TO RIGHT: Indian Hill School PLG Vice Presidents of Fundraising Lori Umbrino and Debbie Brew take a moment during Boardwalk held on March 13, 2015 at Indian Hill School.
O
nce again, Indian Hill PLG sponsored their highlyanticipated Boardwalk event held this year on March 13, 2015. The four-hour event was held at the school and offered several new surprises in addition to the fantastic night that was already planned. The Boardwalk event was organized by Vice Presidents of Fundraising Debbie Brew and Lori Umbrino. This year, the event had the feel of a real Boardwalk with the “street performers” who were actually student entertainers. The talented students performed throughout the event in different locations, and could be enjoyed as students and their families “strolled” the Boardwalk. There were even “Selfie Stations” set up so the students could take their own pictures with beach backgrounds. Other great stops included X-Treme Surf Machine, a Caricature artist, Magic Milk Sand Art where students made a sand mold that became a souvenir to take
home. Food carts offered hot dogs, and cheese covered nachos, while pizza, chips and beverages were available at a nearby table. All 28 classrooms in the school donated a raffle basket. Four Grand Prizes were donated by businesses and Holmdel families. Brew noted that all basket donations were organized by Vicki DiBlasi and that well over 50 volunteers were managed by Darlene Kiss. She also said that the PLG Executive Board helped all night with ticket sales. All games, food carts, rides and attractions were provided by Party Perfect Rentals; Hazlet Pizza provided the pizza. Brew and Umbrino shared, “Boardwalk is the biggest fundraiser of the year for our school. It was a huge success not only because we raised money for our school but because we saw all of the Indian Hill friends and families having fun together on The Boardwalk!”
A Message from the Holmdel Mayor Holmdel in the winter is a beautiful sight, but I’m happy to see that spring is upon us. Our Department of Public Works led by Victor Stevens did an incredible job keeping our roads clear and safe throughout this hectic winter. We wanted to recognize their hard work and dedication and requested they take a break and enjoy a catered lunch to show our appreciation. In continuing the effort to encourage and thank the many volunteers in our community, I attended last month’s First Aid Department meeting and thanked them for their very important role in our town. I also attended several Parent Group organization meetings and events as they help raise the funds needed to help our schools and bring the district families together to aid in that process. The Father/Daughter & Mother/Son dances were met with threatening weather conditions but still brought more couples out than ever before and our Recreation Department threw an impressive event. I was honored to attend the Eagle Scout Ceremony led by Jeff Hipschmann which honored highly successful young men to whom I presented a Proclamation for their efforts. I also attended and participated in a Chinese New Year Celebration at the high school which was really an amazing celebration. The Township Committee has made an effort this year to recognize students and community members and their achievements and we are proud to do so. Our basketball teams for 3rd Grade boys led by Coach Iturbe and 4th Grade girls led by Coach Stolker went on to win the Mid-Monmouth Titles, a spectacular accomplishment…Congratulations to all! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at ehinds@holmdeltownship-nj.com.

Newcomers And Neighbors Club Plan Spring Events On March 12, the Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and surrounding areas met at 9:30 a.m. for a general meeting at the Colts Neck Firehouse #2. Members and guests enjoyed coffee, tea, St. Patrick’s Day goodies, a social hour and a presentation by Christina Lundborg, owner of Chelsea Yarns in Colts Neck. Most of the members and guests had no idea that Colts Neck had a world class yarn store with offerings of classes at all levels, patterns for just about anything and the finest exotic yarns from all over the world. The Newcomers and Neighbors Club holds a general meeting each month but also
sponsors many activity groups such as book club, “Simply Gourmet Lunch”, “Dinner at 7”, theater trips, ‘Ladies Night Out’, and’ Bunco. The club hosts a holiday luncheon in December and a spring luncheon in May. Various events, such as cocktail parties, wine tastings, etc., are planned for fall and spring. Participation in any of these groups is completely optional, but many members enjoy having social events throughout the year and have cultivated strong friendships along the way. Anyone from the surrounding area may join at any time. For more information, call 732.446.9682 or 732.530.9543.
Elena Sanfilippo, mother of Newcomers and Neighbors Club member Linda Rossano, turned 101 on March 11, 2015. Her friends in the club helped her celebrate at the general meeting on March 12. Happy Birthday Elena!
Holmdel’s 17th Annual Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival Planned for May Ring the bell for the 17th Annual Holmdel Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival to be held on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. There will be live animal shows, children’s crafts, a folk festival and tours of the grounds and farmhouse, among other attractions. The Earth Day Festival is a town-wide event sponsored by Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) and the Holmdel Environmental Commission. It is an allvolunteer endeavor whose aim is to celebrate the earth and teach adults and children alike how to appreciate and take care of our planet. As always, the festival begins with a hike through the Ramanessin Brook Nature Trail, led by former Holmdel Mayor Larry Fink. This is a moderate, hilly hike over some of the most beautiful parkland in the county and it ends at Bayonet Farm in time for the festival. Hikers will meet at the Holmdel Park lower parking lot, near the large shed adjacent to
the pond at 10:00 a.m. The event is held rain or shine as most of the events will be held in the historic gray and red barns in case of inclement weather. So bring sunscreen or rain gear, as the weather dictates. Also, bring your appetites for our homemade sandwiches and baked goods, the sale of which supports future festivals. The Earth Day Committee is currently looking for adults and high school students who would like to help prior to or on the day of the festival. If you would like to volunteer some time in the bucolic setting of Bayonet Farm, contact Janet Berk at 732.673.7503. Students can get community service hours. Bayonet Farm is located at 41 Middletown Road in Holmdel. For more information, please call Karen Strickland at 732.203.0733. Please note that this is a non-commercial festival, vendors please do not apply.

OAK HILL ACADEMY’S
Pre-K Has Very Special Valentine’s Day
Thomas Wang Ranked Top 7th Grader in NJ in American Mathematics Competition -10
THE OAK HILL ACADEMY Pre-K celebrated Valentine’s Day by traveling with their teachers to the Sunrise Assisted Living Home in Lincroft to perform “Love Songs for Seniors” for the residents. The day before the trip, students baked and decorated valentine cookies, made special cards, and crafted heart-shaped necklaces with Pre-K Director, Patty Weikes. Some of the songs included: You Are My Sunshine, A You’re Adorable, and Grandma’s Spectacles. Each student also stood and recited special “Love” quotes before mingling with the residents and sharing dessert together. It is a very special experience for both young and old which each will treasure for years to come.
OAK HILL ACADEMY student, Thomas Wang, is not your average seventh grader. His love of math and desire to advance has led to many great accomplishments. In fact, he is currently studying AP Calculus at Oak Hill (not to mention AP Physics and AP American History on his own.) In February, Thomas competed in the American Mathematic Competition -10. The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute, and multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with algebra and geometry concepts. The main purpose of the AMC-10 is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems in a timed multiple-choice format. Students in grades 6-10 are invited to participate. Thomas received the highest score in New Jersey for seventh graders and the second highest 7th grade score in the United States and other countries. He was fourth overall in New Jersey for all participants in grades 6 through 10. The future is bright for this young man!

Saint Leo the Great School Hosts Annual Gala

Maureen Yurcisin and Christy Russo, co-chairs of the Black & White Gala
On February 28, Saint Leo the Great School’s PTA hosted its annual Spring Gala “The Black & White Gala” at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale. The evening began with a cocktail hour where guests mingled over drinks and appetizers. After which they were escorted into the main ballroom for their assigned seating. Principal Cornelius Begley addressed the crowd with a speech during which he started by thanking everybody for their presence. He then extended special thanks to the event’s co-chairs, Mrs. Christy Russo and Mrs. Maureen Yurcisin, as well as all committee members that helped plan the event. Father

John Folchetti then gave a blessing for the attendees leading them in saying grace. All proceeds from the night went to Saint Leo the Great School’s PTA. The money raised allows the PTA to purchase much needed items for the students. Last year’s raised funds were utilized to purchase new furniture and equipment for various classrooms, in addition to security upgrades, desks, and flooring. The annual spring Gala is a great event that brings parents of Saint Leo the Great School together in a fun social atmosphere while at the same time raising money for those who count the most to them, their children.

DIVORCE TALK
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.
TRIAL
T
rial is almost never the word you want to hear when you’re going through a divorce. It means you have been unable to reach a compromise that you and your spouse can live with. It also means that the stress of the divorce is about to get even worse (and you thought that was impossible!).
Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C.
Divorce trials are just about the same as any other trial, except in New Jersey there is no jury. The judge hears the case and makes the decision. Proof, however, is required to convince a judge that your position is the correct one. Feelings, hunches and intuition are not proofs. They, in fact, are inadmissible. Equally insufficient is, “I just know.”
For more information please see the firm’s website at www.par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice.
Most trials begin with opening statements by the lawyers. The plaintiff’s lawyer goes first. Each gets an opportunity to outline his case for the judge, telling the judge what he intends to prove and what conclusions the judge should draw from those proofs. At the conclusion of the openings, it is time to call the first witness. The plaintiff goes first. The plaintiff’s first witness may be the plaintiff. It may be an expert witness, e.g., a custody, a medical or an accounting expert. It may even be the defendant. Witnesses take the stand, take an oath or affirmation that they will tell the truth, and are then questioned. Questioning begins with direct examination by the lawyer who called the
witness to the stand. When he is finished, the other lawyer cross-examines. When cross ends, the first lawyer can ask questions on re-direct. Then recross and so it goes until all questions have been asked. The judge may also ask questions. Some judges ask questions as they occur to him. Others wait until the lawyers’ questioning is finished. The plaintiff then calls his next witness, following this format until all plaintiff’s witnesses have been questioned. The plaintiff then rests. Then it’s the defendant’s turn. The format is the same, but in reverse, with the defendant’s lawyer starting with direct examination. When all the defendant’s witnesses have been presented, the defendant rests. The plaintiff (and then the defendant) is given an opportunity to call witnesses in rebuttal if the need arises. When all witnesses have finished testifying, the trial concludes with closing arguments. Some judges require oral summations. Some require written summations. Some require both. Once the summations are done the waiting begins. Waiting for the Court’s decision can be unsettling. The uncertainty can be nerve-wracking. You have just relinquished control over the outcome of your case to a total stranger. The wait can be days, weeks or even months. It can come in the form of a written opinion mailed or emailed to the lawyers, an oral decision in open court in the presence of the parties and counsel, or an oral decision in open court without anyone present. This requires ordering a transcript to find out what the decision is. Trial is (and should be) a last resort. It is stressful, time consuming, and expensive. It is almost always preferable to find a middle ground that both parties can live with. Your sanity and your solvency may hang in the balance.

First Annual Keyport
Antique & Artisan Festival From painting on the waterfront to perusing fine antiques on West Front Street, Keyport’s First Annual Keyport Antique and Artisan Festival will take place on May 16, 2015. From 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., artisans and antique dealers will fill the parks and line the streets of Keyport as the Borough celebrates local art and historic antiques. The many antique and boutique shops will be joined by other dealers from around the area. Together, they will offer a selection of treasures worthy of closing West Front Street to traffic for the festival. The festival will include live entertainment with music, poetry readings, and a preview of an off Broadway musical, I Can Sing an Opera, with director Andrea Andresakis. In cooperation with the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative, a trolley will give complimentary rides between the Matawan Train Station and Keyport to the festival. “The Arts Society of Keyport (ASK) is so happy to be participating in this Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative sponsored event. We are excited to be working with the Monmouth County Corridor of Arts (MOCO) and are hoping that the event will help boost business for the local merchants that are part of the funding for our public art projects,” said Charlie Merla, President of ASK. In addition to antiques, there will be local artisans in the park and an Artisan Village for homemade artisan crafts, celebrating unique artists’ work. Guests can enjoy Art on the Bay, where individuals and groups can sign up ahead of time to paint what they see on the beautiful Bayfront on canvases provided by the KBBC. The pieces will be judged at the end of the day in group categories. Visit one of Keyport’s many restaurants for a taste of the Bayshore before heading to the silent auction, Spheres of Imagination, with proceeds benefiting the Art Society of Keyport. The First Annual Keyport Antique and Artisan Festival is yet another way to highlight what the Pearl of the Bayshore has to offer, welcoming guests from all over to experience the artistic culture of Keyport Borough. Follow Keyport Happenings on Facebook for more details as we get closer to the date!

Keyport IHOP Celebrates Grand Opening with Ribbon Cutting & Donates $5,000 to Children’s Miracle Network® The Sayegh family continues tradition of giving at the Keyport IHOP. Restauranteur Jack Sayegh (left) and wife Sandra (second from left) continue the tradition of giving by opening their hearts and wallets to the Specialized Children’s Hospital Network for National Pancake Day with a donation of $5000.00 during their Grand Opening Ceremony. Following in the steps of Cliff and Mitzy Moore, Sayegh isn’t new to getting his businesses involved with the community and working with local organizations for fundraisers and charitable donations. As his flagship location, the Sayegh family hopes to continue down the path of giving with this charity as he looks to expand his restaurant chain with future IHOP locations.
On March 2, 2015, the IHOP located in Keyport held a ribbon cutting ceremony with local dignitaries. New Jersey entrepreneur Jack Sayegh, has invested in Monmouth County with the purchase of the IHOP restaurant. Sayegh and his family presently own movie theaters and other businesses throughout New Jersey. The Honorable Senator Joseph Kyrillos, long-time Bayshore area legislator and leader, lead the grand opening celebration, along with Hon. Assemblyman
Declan O’Scanlon, Freeholders Tom Arnone and John P. Curley, Keyport Council members, Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative, Monmouth County Chamber of Commerce, and many friends and supporters. Jack Sayegh also made a $5,000.00 donation to the Children’s Miracle Network®. IHOP’s goal this year is to raise 3.5 million dollars nationally. he Beauty Foundation for Cancer Care hosted the 9th Annual Beauty Ball on March 14, 2015. Event cochairs Krista-Olsen Dibsie and Carla Scarabino, along with the entire Board of Trustees, decided it was time for something unique and fresh. The gala had outgrown its previous venue, and moved to The Robert J. Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College. This gracefully accommodated more than 300 guests to dine, dance and celebrate. The evening raised over $250,000. All proceeds will be given to families who are currently fighting cancer. The evening brought plenty of celebrity. Guests from all over the TriState Area come to the Beauty Ball each year to enjoy a very special evening, and help support the Beauty Foundation’s mission to ease the financial strains associated with battling cancer, and to allow patients and their families to focus on the most important thing; beating the disease.

April 29th, 2015 Denim Day is the internationally designated day in which employees are encouraged to wear jeans to work in order to raise awareness concerning sexual violence. The history of Denim Day began in 1999, when an Italian court, on appeal, overturned the conviction of a driving instructor who was found guilty of raping an 18-year old student. The appeals judge ruled, “Because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them … and by removing the jeans … it was no longer rape but consensual sex,” causing an international uproar. To protest, women in the Italian Parliament called for a “skirt strike” and wore jeans to work. Since this time businesses throughout the world have participated in promoting rape awareness in April. In addition, last year the governor signed a law recognizing Denim Day in New Jersey. Denim Day offers employees the opportunity to promote sexual violence awareness by wearing jeans to work and to contribute $5 to 180 Turning Lives Around. This contribution will support our organization’s mission to end domestic and sexual violence in Monmouth County. 180 offers an array of vital programs and services, including 24-hour domestic violence and rape hotlines, emergency housing, group counseling, and trained advocates who assist victims at police stations, hospitals and family court. Individuals wishing to donate $5.00 to support Denim Day and the work that 180 does to prevent violence in Monmouth County will receive a sticker to wear on April 29th along with their blue jeans.
