Correction: In CM’s March 2016 edition, a story about local Colts
Neck resident Adam Schatzmann and his new initiative, NationalGiving was published. NationalGiving is an easy way for businesses to give back, by using the “Round-Up” program - an idea where each person gave a small amount of change by rounding up at their time of purchase - it could create a significant revenue stream for a small charity. If you are a business and are interested in hearing more, the correct email to contact NationalGiving is NationalGivingLLC@gmail.com.

Holmdel’s Indian School
TRANSFORMED INTO A SUMMER BOARDWALK Holmdel’s Indian Hill School Parent Liaison Group (PLG) held its annual Boardwalk event on March 18, 2016. It transformed the cafeteria and gym into a Boardwalk scene that only was missing the hot sun!
The cafeteria was full of a variety of baskets to be raffled
off that were donated by each classroom in the school. There were also some impressive grand prizes including Disney passes, Apple products and sports tickets to name a few. Students performed on stage as everyone enjoyed Boardwalk fare such as nachos, hot dogs, pizza, cotton candy, ice cream and popcorn. The gym was full of activity with many Boardwalk games providing fun and prizes for all to win or lose! A huge inflatable “Wrecking Ball” tested the balance and the Surf Extreme surfing machine gave all riders a good swell to try before they go out on the real thing this summer.
Debbie Brew and Lori Umbrino, Vice Presidents of
Fundraising chaired the event and said, “We are thrilled with the turnout. We love having the kids come out for a night of fun to hang out with their families and classmates making memories to last a lifetime. Nothing makes us happier. We are hopeful that the success of this event results in helping us reach our goal of 1:1 Chromebooks for our school but it is just as important for us to provide an evening of smiles for all!”
They also mentioned they were grateful for the help of
Vicki DiBlasi, who has coordinated the classroom baskets for many years. Darlene Kiss was extremely helpful in organizing the volunteers, which were made up of Satz and Holmdel High School students and parents. The Executive Board worked all night, as did many of the teachers. Dr. Axelrod stayed to call off the raffle winners and the custodians were key in helping before, during and after the event.

8 ANNUAL LUNCHEON th
a Rousing Success! On March 15, 2016 - the CNBA held its biggest event of
the year, a networking luncheon with over 220 people in attendance. Excellent food, service, and facilities were provided by Trump National Golf Club. Thank you to Greenhouse Gallery for donating the lovely centerpieces. Other local businesses donated a wide variety of gift baskets that were raffled off, and a silent auction was held for golf outings and sports memorabilia. A great time was had by all, and the large and enthusiastic crowd allowed for many new business connections to be made. The group is excited to announce the CNBA will be bringing back the Fourth of July Fireworks for Colts Neck Township by sponsoring the celebration on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at Bucks Mill Park. The Colts Neck Business Association will be holding a card exchange in late spring, check its website for more details at www. coltsneckbusiness.org. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 a.m. at the Colts Neck Library. All are welcome. Coffee and muffins are graciously provided by Perkins Restaurant.

SPRING HAS FINALLY ARRIVED and I hope it’s here to stay. Our first volunteer effort will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., starting off at the Community Center. Here you will register for a section to pick up litter. I’m encouraging all to come out and help.
continue to recognize them at our meetings. Our recent recognitions included our 2015 NJAYF undefeated Jersey Shore Junior Midget North Division Champion Football team, as well as the 8th grade Boys Basketball team who won the Mid-Monmouth Championship.
I’m very excited about another great new opportunity offered to our own; our Holmdel senior students and Holmdel graduates who are in college up through 2+ years out of college. We are hosting a networking opportunity on May 25, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bell Works. Many businesses will be represented and the link for students to register has just begun. The committee working on this endeavor has been very busy and their efforts will show at this great event.
I met with our Administrator to review our Development Fee Ordinance (COAH). This ordinance previously required the collection of fees when constructing additions to homes, installation of pools, etc. The new ordinance removes this requirement, and residential fees will only be collected when an application is being made for a new development or a sub-division. I also met with JCP&L to discuss the tree trimming plan for 2016. Check the website for information regarding trimming areas.
possible. I was happy to attend and participate in the Chinese New Year Celebration and then to host visitors from Nanjing, China by touring them through our Township Offices. The Girl Scouts recently accompanied me on a tour as well. I was grateful to be included in the HFEE’s Battle of the Faculties event and thrilled to see so many come out for our Holmdel Recreation’s annual Eggstravaganza Egg Hunt. Please come out to Community Day where we will all gather to celebrate Holmdel on April 16, 2016! As I always say, these events that bring our community together are needed to show our support of the great community we live in!

Tax TIPS
Key Tax Tips
ON THE TAX EFFECTS OF DIVORCE OR SEPARATION P R OV I D E D BY | Chris Whalen, CPA
Income tax may be the last thing on your mind after a divorce or separation. However, these events can have a big impact on your taxes. Alimony and a name change are just a few items you may need to consider. Here are some key tax tips to keep in mind if you get divorced or separated.
Tax Laws are complex.
It is very easy to make mistakes that can incur penalties.
Still have questions? (732) 673-0510, chriswhalencpa @gmail.com. Please visit my website, chriswhalencpa.com, to learn more about my firm & to read more informative memos like this one.
Child Support. If you pay child support, you can’t deduct it on your tax return. If you receive child support, the amount you receive is not taxable. Alimony Paid. If you make payments under a divorce or separate maintenance decree or written separation agreement you may be able to deduct them as alimony. This applies only if the payments qualify as alimony for federal tax purposes. If the decree or agreement does not require the payments, they do not qualify as alimony. Alimony Received. If you get alimony from your spouse or former spouse, it is taxable in the year you get it. Alimony is not subject to tax withholding so you may need to increase the tax you pay during the year to avoid a penalty. To do this, you can make estimated tax payments or increase the amount of tax withheld from your wages. Name Changes. If you change your name after your divorce, notify the Social Security Administration of the change. File Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. You can get the form on SSA.gov or call 800-7721213 to order it. The name on your tax return must match SSA records. A name mismatch can delay your refund. Health Care Law Considerations: Special Marketplace Enrollment Period. If you lose your health insurance coverage due to divorce, you
are still required to have coverage for every month of the year for yourself and the dependents you can claim on your tax return. Losing coverage through a divorce is considered a qualifying life event that allows you to enroll in health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace during a Special Enrollment Period. Changes in Circumstances. If you purchase health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace you may get advance payments of the premium tax credit in 2015. If you do, you should report changes in circumstances to your Marketplace throughout the year. Changes to report include a change in marital status, a name change and a change in your income or family size. By reporting changes, you will help make sure that you get the proper type and amount of financial assistance. This will also help you avoid getting too much or too little credit in advance. Shared Policy Allocation. If you divorced or are legally separated during the tax year and are enrolled in the same qualified health plan, you and your former spouse must allocate policy amounts on your separate tax returns to figure your premium tax credit and reconcile any advance payments made on your behalf. Publication 974, Premium Tax Credit, has more information about the Shared Policy Allocation.

ANIMAL ADVOCACY Provided by Kathleen Schatzmann NJ State Director | The Humane Society of the United States “SeaWorld to End All Orca Breeding” – that was the breaking news in the animal community last month. In a sign that the humane economy is an unyielding force, exerting its influence on companies in all sectors of commerce, SeaWorld announced in cooperation with The HSUS, that it will end all breeding of its orcas and it won’t obtain additional orcas from other sources—policies sought by animal advocates for many decades. The company also announced, after negotiations with The HSUS, that it would phase out its theatrical orca shows in favor of orca exhibits that highlight the whales’ natural behaviors, and have no orcas at all in any new parks around the world – the remaining orcas will be the last generation housed at SeaWorld. The company has also agreed to redouble its efforts to conduct rescue and rehabilitation for a wide variety
of marine creatures in distress; join The HSUS in our advocacy campaigns against commercial whaling, sealing, shark finning, and other cruelties; and revamp food policies at all of its parks for 20 million visitors. SeaWorld has pledged to invest at least $50 million over the next five years for the rescue and rehabilitation of marine animals and on advocacy campaigns—a major boost to our movement in helping marine animals in crisis. While the remaining captive orcas will live out their lives at SeaWorld, the company is phasing out theatrical performances at its three parks in San Diego, San Antonio, and Orlando, and spectators will instead see orca enrichment and exercise activities. In a nutshell, this is essentially an end to orca shows, with no orca breeding, no orcas at any new parks, and, during the

Location of Holmdel Gas Regulator Station Poses Problems for Residents AT HOLMDEL’S MARCH 2, 2016 Zoning Board Public Hearing, representatives from New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) presented their application to put a natural gas regulator station in front of a solar farm on Holmdel Road across the street from Hop Brook Lane. This regulator station would be placed just a few feet away from a road that has a 50 mph speed limit. Thirteen variances are being requested, including an additional use in zoning to allow for it, decreasing by more than 75% its buffer from nearby residences, and relief from height requirements to allow for three fifteen-foot-high heat emission stacks. Most importantly, NJNG requested relief from the required environmental impact studies that would determine
24
this project’s potential effects on nearby residents. The purpose of this regulator station is to reduce natural gas pressure in the high-pressure line that originates in Jamesburg, NJ, turns north onto Holmdel Road and travels eventually into Hazlet. This facility would be a principal station that connects to other lines in adjoining towns. While NJNG’s need for a regulator station is not being questioned, this proposed location close to homes and farmland and a high speed road is problematic. It poses safety, noise and environmental concerns for the nearby families as well as the crops that are grown there. Come to the continued Zoning Board Public Hearing for this application on May 18, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. at Holmdel Town Hall to voice your concern about this project. transition period, a better environment for the remaining whales. This announcement not only promises more help for manatees, sea lions, and other marine creatures in distress, but it also connects consumers to these issues through their diets. Starting soon, all SeaWorld food offerings will be cage-free for eggs and gestation-crate-free for pork, all seafood will be more sustainably sourced, and there will be more vegetarian and vegan options. SeaWorld is banking on the premise that the American public will come to their parks in larger numbers if they join our cause instead of resisting it. The world is waking up to the needs of all animals, and the smartest CEOs don’t resist the change. They hitch a ride on it and harness the momentum.

Help improve a child’s life by having your teeth whitened. Sound easy? That’s because it is. The 18th annual Smiles For Life Campaign means dental patients nationwide can brighten a child’s future just by visiting local Crown Council dentists Drs. Mitchel Friedman and Julia Cintron. The campaign runs now through June 30, 2016 - and 100% of the proceeds from teeth whitening procedures done at Newman Springs Dental Care are contributed directly to the Smiles for Life Foundation. This foundation helps fund worthy children’s charities and humanitarian work, both locally and around the world. As an additional incentive, each tooth whitening patient enjoys their smile brightening procedure at a discounted rate. Patients love the unique opportunity to improve the lives of children in need while also enhancing their own smile. Since its creation, the Crown Council’s Smiles For Life Campaign has raised over $36,000,000 for seriously ill, disabled and disadvantaged kids. That’s a staggering $2M a year average, all thanks to participation from local communities and dental practices. Smiles For Life hopes to continue this tremendous pace for donations this year. This is a wonderful and easy way for members of the community to help make a real difference in a child’s life. Anyone interested in donating directly without teeth whitening can do so. Participants can refer friends to Drs. Mitchel Friedman and Julia Cintron. by linking to the Smiles for Life site, making it easier than ever to give the gift of a new smile to friends and loved ones, while also giving hope to children in need. Half of the donations raised by Newman Springs Dental Care are given to the Parker Family Health Center in Red Bank. The remaining balance goes to the Smiles For Life Foundation to support its national and international initiatives, including programs in the Dominican Republic, Bolivia and Guatemala. Smiles For Life also maintains a strong longtime partnership with the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation supporting Child Life Zones in Children’s Hospitals across the United States. Stay tuned to see how much Smiles For Life is able to raise this year. Better yet, participate! Newman Springs Dental Care is located at 539 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. Volunteers Honored by the Monmouth County Park System Holmdel Resident Volunteered 3,000+ Hours It was all about the volunteers on March 6, 2016 when the Monmouth County Park System held its Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony at Hominy Hill Golf Course in Colts Neck. Throughout the year, 1,175 people volunteered a total of 26,535 hours assisting the Park System with recreation programs, special events and park facilities. During the event, Park System staff honored 155 volunteers who gave over 40 hours in the past year. Uncovering Hidden Epicurean Delights PORCINI IS LOCATED ACROSS FROM THE FIREHOUSE BECAUSE IT’S HOT! Porcini has been open for a little over seven months and is a BYOB bistro situated in a small brick storefront across from the Volunteer Firehouse on Bay Street in Highlands. It is a 44 seat restaurant that is tight, but not uncomfortable, with the wait staff moving from table to table without much effort. We are not sure how the name was chosen, but it certainly is appropriate. Italian folklore holds that porcini mushrooms sprout up at the time of the new moon, and it is said that a New Moon is the best time of the lunar cycle to begin all things “new.” It is owned by newly engaged Chris Atamian and Alexandria Mahon, who are not yet thirty years old. Chris, who recently served short stints at Nicholas of Red Bank and Fresh, is in charge of the kitchen; Alexandria manages the dining room with expert customer service skills. We wanted to treat a widow from our Church to dinner and were looking for an early reservation, specifically because we wanted to support the efforts and entrepreneurship of these young people. No tables were open until late at night, but they were able to squeeze us in at 6:45 p.m. on a Saturday night. Candlelit, bare wood tables sit on a wood floor, making for a neat and clean presentation. The room is painted in warm colors with subdued lighting, providing a warm, homey feeling. Alexandria greeted us and helped us settle in at a table she set for three. She definitely has firm control over the front and has trained her staff to fill in wherever and whenever necessary, resulting in excellent service. She manages turnover so that we never felt rushed, even though she had to make accommodation to meet our seating request. Although Alexandria went through a short list of appetizer specials, we decided to order from the menu. We were pleased to find out that Chris uses locally sourced ingredients and seafood. There were many interesting appetizers to choose from. We shared Littleneck Clams ($15) in a delicate white wine broth with a hint of garlic and bits of chorizo providing a little kick; Crab Cake ($15) with tangy Asian slaw spiced with a chili-garlic aioli; Beet Salad ($10) over mixed greens with goat cheese accented by candied hazlenuts and dried apricots in a sherry vinaigrette. The clams were fresh and tasty bathed in the broth while the crab cake, although not chunky was all crab and little filler. The beets atop the crisp and fresh greens were thinly sliced and the sweetness of the hazlenuts played nicely with the tang of the cheese. For entrées, we selected the NY strip steak ($33) and Duck ($30) from the specials. I asked Alexandria to serve what Chris was most proud of. She served me the Pork Osso Buco ($29) with sweet potato hash and garlic broccoli rabe in a maple whisky sauce. The pork was succulent and the blend of flavors excited the palate. The steak was cooked just as requested and was covered with what seemed to be charred eggplant; a different presentation and scrumptious experience. The duck was served room temperature and presented both sliced and on the bone over sweet potatoes. Tender and wonderfully seasoned, it competed with the marvelous Osso Buco. Dessert presented an impossible decision point. All of the selections which are $9 (except for the Gelato, which is less) cry out “choose me.” We chose the Chocolate Hazelnut Macaroon, which was soft and chewy with caramel in the center sprinkled with berries and drizzled with chocolate sauce. But they all sounded so good, we also had the Brown Butter Apple Pie with Cinnamon Gelato. This dessert was superb and the Gelato was as good, if not better than in Italy. But we voted the Macaroon the better between the two of them and decided that every time we come, we will order a different dessert. The restaurant also has a three-course Pre-Fixe Menu ($35) every Tuesday through Thursday. Over the archway between the dining room and the kitchen is a sign that says, “Kiss the Cook.” Alexandria, which in Greek means “defender of men,” doesn’t have to defend her man. In fact, she says she will let anyone give Chris a kiss! One thing is for sure, if Alexandria and Chris work as hard at their impending marriage as they do at making Porcini an inviting venue for a delightful epicurean evening, they will be married a long, long time. Porcini is located at 168 Bay Avenue in Highlands, New Jersey. For more information, call 732.291.3080 or visit www. RestaurantPorcini.com.

COLTS NECK RESIDENT MIL KOBRINSKI SHARING HER CRAFT FOR A GOOD CAUSE STORY SUSA N MUR PH Y
COLTS NECK RESIDENT MIL WEXLER KOBRINSKI has been an artist since she was 18 years old. Her strong desire to study art took her to art school in Amsterdam, Netherlands in the mid 1970s as a painter where she was an apprentice to the Dutch painter Jos Rovers. She also studied at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam, which has shaped her life as an artist today. After her studies, she lived in Israel for nearly three years where she worked in a ceramic factory as a painter designing and painting scenes of Jerusalem, which were sold mostly to tourists. Her studies continued when she moved to Colts Neck in 1992, studying pottery with Jenny Harrington at Thompson Park and with Ed Stein at Brookdale Community College. In 2005, Mil received her Masters of Fine Arts-IA from Goddard College, Vermont.

“I have been teaching art since 1986, but I have been teaching private workshops in my Colts Neck Studio since 1993. I have had the pleasure of working with so many children in the Colts Neck area. We have had so much fun playing and creating all sorts of wonderful artwork over the many years,” said Mil. Today, she has only one adult class in her studio with students she has had for many years. “I am more of an advisor to some of them. I also teach a painting class Monday evenings in Red Bank at the Art Alliance.” As an adjunct professor, Mil has taught at Brookdale Community College, Monmouth University, and currently has workshops that she teaches all over the country. Mil explained that during the practicum part of her MFA, and after she read about the grassroots movement of a project known as
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
“Empty Bowls,” she decided to organize and hold an Empty Bowl Event. This project was initially started by John Hartom, a high school teacher who wanted his students to create beautiful artwork and bring hunger awareness to others. “The great thing about Empty Bowls is that it creates awareness that hunger exists in our community. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the event,” said Mil. Volunteers are needed to create the bowls, donate supplies, and to help with the business end of the event. “Because so many people are involved, we are a part of a giant puzzle and not one piece is more important than another. We need all the pieces to complete it!” Empty Bowls is something Mil feels personally connected to on many levels. “Having grown up with a mother and grandparents who were Holocaust survivors, and being
aware of the many relatives that did not survive, I have listened to many stories of hunger and it has made such an impression on me growing up. When we see members of our own community who are struggling to feed their families and count on the Food Bank for their survival, then how can we turn our backs and not want to help?” Mil is organizing an Empty Bowls Event that is a collaboration of the JBJ Soul Kitchen, the Art Alliance of Red Bank, and the Monmouth County Arts Council. The JBJ Soul Kitchen is ground zero for hosting this event. The Monmouth County Arts Council and donations of fellow artists such as Mil have provided all the funding for material supplies for the event. She noted that Ceramic Supply of Lodi has been helpful in donating to past events and she looks forward to having them partner for this event. A recent workshop taught by Mil at Brookdale Community College gave her the opportunity to work with 180 select high school teens from all over Monmouth County who each made a pottery bowl for the event. There will also be 200 plus bowls being created by artists and other volunteers. “My ultimate goal is that this project becomes part of every high school curriculum in our state. Most schools have funding for art projects and this is such a great social art project. If there are schools that do not have access to clay and kilns, they can come on board in other ways and may even have artists that are willing to help them in providing workshops and/or materials. Last year, Collier High School and their art teacher Judy Raybon helped to fire and create 150 bowls. When schools participate in this way it becomes such a successful event,” shared Mil. She noted that it would be great if there are any ceramic artists who would be willing to contribute one or more bowls to this event. She can be reached by email at mil_wexler@hotmail. com. Bowls may also be delivered or mailed to The Art Alliance of Monmouth County, 33 Monmouth Street, Red Bank, New Jersey 07701. The Empty Bowl Event will be held at the JBJ Soul Kitchen on May 14, 2016 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and on May 15, 2016 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Hundreds of bowls will be displayed for sale and may be purchased for $20. “I am really hoping we have community support in coming out to this event. JBJ’s Soul Kitchen has been such a blessing to our community in supplying such a great venue for all of us. They are the backbone to this whole event coming together,” said Mil. Proceeds from the sales of the event go to “pay it forward for a meal” for someone in need and part of the proceeds will go to the Art Alliance, which provides a community co-op for all artists in Monmouth County.

EVEN THOUGH THE TEMPERATURE WAS IN THE 70’S on March 9, 2016 - that didn’t stop the Village School children and their parents from bundling up and stepping onto the cold ice rink for a fun-filled evening of ice skating at the Middletown Sports Complex. The Village School Parent Student Association organized the event as a way to promote quality time amongst family and friends.

APRIL EVENT:
The Persona of Eleanor Roosevelt ST. MARY’S MARTHA MARY GUILD is planning a very special event on April 13, 2016. Linda Kenyon will present one of her “one woman shows” entitled “A Life of My Own: Meeting Eleanor Roosevelt” by Stephen LaRocque and directed by Ed Starr. Linda has had various roles on TV, in film as fictional characters, and as narrator for nonfictional topics. She has two other “one woman shows” - Julia Child, the famous chef that we all remember and Babe Didrikson Zaharias (a sports legend in a time when women were not encouraged to be athletic and who went public with her battle
explained that school nights are usually hard for

families to get together, and that this event has
productions from Shakespeare to children’s plays. Linda plans to

THE SPRING EQUALS SOCCER SEASON for many families, and as many soccer parents are aware, the NJYSA Board and NJYS Member League Presidents have adopted the US Soccer's Player Development Initiatives. Some clubs including Holmdel FC, have decided to begin the transition to adhere to these new guidelines which may/may not impact your child’s team for 2016/2017 season. Most coaches have addressed these changes with the parents of their players already and we suggest you discuss specific questions with your child’s coach directly. Holmdel FC/NJX Academy is committed to ensuring that travel soccer players will have options to play in the upcoming season and we are reviewing any potential team changes on an ongoing basis. Holmdel FC/NJX Academy has grown from 17 teams to 44 teams over the past five years. This is a testament to the commitment our Executive Board has placed on drawing professional trainers, top coaches and cultivating young talent in the Monmouth County area. Our teams are currently included in EDP, NPL, JAGS, MAPS, MOSA leagues, etc. Our NJX Academy will continue to draw young talent and have professionally coached teams. Holmdel FC/NJX Academy tryouts are as follows: NJX Tryouts: Monday, April 25, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. Holmdel FC Tryouts: Friday, April 29, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. For more information on exact times for various age groups and to register, visit www.holmdelfc.org.

VILLAGE SCHOOL PSA HELD FAMILY FUN NIGHTS THIS YEAR'S BINGO FESTIVITIES at Holmdel’s Village School, organized by Mrs. Danielle Impreveduto and Mrs. Alychia Buchan, had a twist - it was Pajama BINGO Night. Children and parents alike came decked out in their favorite pajamas to enjoy a night with family and friends competing for a number of awesome prizes. More than 250 students attended the first evening with their families, which was open to all students in Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade. Attendance at the second night for second and third graders was bigger than ever before with more than 300 students and family members. There were many "bingo" winners during the evening, but the PSA makes sure every child goes home a winner on Bingo night!
School Principal Brian Schillaci expressed his appreciation
of the family fun nights sponsored by the Village School PSA, "Village School is very appreciative of the time and effort our parents put in to those events that enhance the sense of community and pride among Village School families."
The PSA would also like to thank the guest callers, Mr. Kevin
Buchan and Mrs. Katie Tiller. Both parents did a wonderful job keeping the games moving. The PSA would also like to express a special thank you to Mr. Brian Schillaci and Mrs. Jessica Vierschilling for attending the BINGO nights, as well as the Village School custodial staff who is always available to help.
The Village School PSA is busy preparing for its end-of-the
year events, which includes its biggest fundraiser of the year – the CARNIVAL, which is scheduled for Friday, May 20, 2016.

Eventful Salon Concrete Art Show BENEFITS HOMETOWN HEROES
A salon by definition brings people together under one roof to exchange ideas, reconnect with friends and inspire. On Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Salon Concrete (located at 123 Broad Street in Red Bank), you are invited to an evening to be amused, start a conversation and witness a move that intends to inspire the local community to be heroes in their own neighborhoods. This evening was inspired by Michael Schwartz the President of Hometown Heroes a non-profit organization built on the idea of paying it forward and designed by Christine Zilinski the salon owner, stylist, industry speaker and trainer and leadership expert will be accompanied by local photographer, designer and artist Jay Alders at this inspiring event matching art with beauty as she crafts amazing hair creations inspired by Alders art in a live performance. Alders whose distinctive style and imaginative prowess is recognized around the world is known for his intricate brushwork, intense colors and superb compositions that bring to life his signature elongated figures and stylized forms. Hometown Heroes was created because they believed that their community needed a grass roots organization that could be poised to take immediate action in times of need. Their mission is to provide assistance to any individual or family in crisis regardless of ethnicity, gender, or age. They have helped raise thousands of dollars to help residents with everything from bills, to replacement furniture, to security deposits on new homes. They have provided food for the elderly, assistance for new mothers, help to residents facing disability and homelessness - and, in 2009, an expenses-paid funeral to the family of a woman killed in a house fire. What is performance art? How can you be a local HERO? Find out April 9th at Salon Concrete from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. There will be live paintings, demos on hair trends, and live music by the talented Alex English plus free food and drink at this event. We may be thinking about a thousand different concepts when we talk about building a better community but how we measure these concepts and their true impacts in our lives is what really matters.

Celebrate World Thinking Day
OVER 70 HOLMDEL GIRL SCOUTS celebrated World Thinking Day by learning about international issues at a town-wide event on February 26, 2016 at the Holmdel Senior Center. Troops consisted of Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes and i-Girls. Girl Scout World Thinking Day is officially February 22. It is an opportunity for Girl Scouts to recognize that they are part of a special network that spans the globe. This year’s theme was “Connect” and scouts were asked to explore and celebrate the connections that make life happier. “We wanted to ask the girls, not what they want to be when they grow up, but what problems they’d like to solve. Then we showed them tonight how they can help be a part of global solutions to the world’s most pressing problems in developing countries and in the USA,” said Jennifer Burden, Founder of WorldMomsBlog.com and one of the event’s organizers.

IN LATE FEBRUARY, Saint Leo the Great School’s PTA hosted its annual Spring Gala at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale. The theme this year was “Lights, Camera, Gala” in honor of the Oscars the next night. The evening began with a cocktail hour where guests were treated to a slideshow of their students taking advantage of all of the wonderful programs and purchases that the PTA has funded. Approximately 220 parents, faculty, and special friends then proceeded into the main ballroom for the dinner and auction portion of the evening. Principal Cornelius Begley addressed the crowd thanking them for their attendance and acknowledging the tremendous efforts by the volunteers and the co-chairs Mrs. Christy Russo and Mrs. Maureen Yurcisin for another wonderful event. Father John Folchetti, Pastor of Saint Leo the Great,

was welcomed to the platform to give the attendees a blessing and lead all in saying Grace. This year, Mr. Tony and Ann Sasso of Colts Neck won the “First Pick” raffle and were awarded their choice of any item from the live auction as their prize before the auction commenced. An exciting live auction got started over highly competitive items such as front row seating for Kindergarten graduation, principal for a day, a personal chef dinner party, and lavish vacations. In addition to the live auction, guests had the opportunity to bid on silent auction items throughout the evening such as art pieces made by students, sports memorabilia, sporting events, and jewelry. New for this year’s Gala was a Paddle Raise, where parents were invited to
contribute monies earmarked to purchase Microsoft Surface Tablets for the students classrooms. Guests were asked if they would consider making a one-time donation from the $100 level up through $2,500. All proceeds from the night went to Saint Leo the Great School’s PTA. PTA President Roseann Leibrock said of the night, “As this is PTA’s biggest fundraiser, it is greatly appreciated all the time and effort that goes into planning this event. The children greatly benefit from everyone’s hard work and they are the reason we all volunteer our time. The Saint Leo family is a truly special community and you could see that at the Gala.” The money raised allows the PTA to purchase and support the students of the school.

Colts Neck Reformed Church: Always Evolving and Welcoming
STORY CARRIE FALCONE THE TERM “REFORMED” is often used as another word for “change”, and sometimes change can either be a good thing or a difficult challenge. But, for The Colts Neck Reformed Church, the congregation has worked endlessly on being caring, welcoming, and affirming to others in the Colts Neck area. The church was established in the 1800’s as an extension to the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Freehold, also known as the Old Brick Reformed Church of Marlboro; the chapel was added in the 1900’s and has remained in Colts Neck ever since.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
In early 2013, some churches in the Monmouth County area considered welcoming other members into their churches, including parishioners who are gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgender. By that time, the CNRC held a series of discussions where staff members looked into various topics that related closely to LGBT and the church. A series of presentations were conducted in 2014 and additional prayer sessions were offered in the spring of 2015. Reverend Jeffrey Knol is the associate minister of the Colts Neck Reformed Church and has been with the congregation since 2013. He explained it was not an easy decision for the congregation in the beginning, and not everyone was thrilled with the idea at all. Five to six members of the church, some families, were unsupportive of the idea and decided to leave abruptly. Last June, a statement was made by the Colts Neck Reformed Church claiming that they are still committed to welcoming parishioners from all walks of life, regardless of their background: “Our statement is the result of this prayerful process of study, discussion, and discernment. We feel it needs to be shared so that all people can know that they are welcomed and affirmed in our faith community.” Reverend Knol also expressed that while the decision has been hard, everyone is still open to join their congregation. While there have not been any plans made for additional programs and events, he often conducts one on one meetings and counseling sessions with Reverend Scott Brown. STORY SUSAN MURPHY The annual Turkey Dinner Benefit held at Holmdel Community United Church of Christ on March 12, 2016 was an outstanding success. Four seating times allowed well over 400 guests to enjoy a home-cooked meal in the newly renovated Fellowship Hall. This year, the Benefit Dinner will assist the Bayshore Lunch Program, which is based in Keyport. The program serves lunch five days a week to those in need of food or fellowship. This event has grown over the years to become an annual tradition for the community as well as for the members of Holmdel Community Church. The delicious dinner included turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, coleslaw, and home-made pies and desserts. Take-out dinners were also available. Event organizers Valerie Hansen and Don Pope made certain every aspect of the event ran smoothly. “This is huge community event and we had fun!” said Valerie. Her husband Kris was also on hand helping where needed. “This is reminiscent of the way things were in the early days of the church, back in the 1600s when families came together. It is a continued reflection of the church’s mission work which is to care for those in our community.” It was expected that the proceeds from this event will allow about six months-worth of lunches to be shared with the community and those in need. Holmdel Community Church was grateful for the support of Dearborn Farms, Holmdel; Delicious Orchards, Colts Neck; Acme, Lincroft; and Saker ShopRite, as well as the generous food donations by families and other local businesses. With an event this large, teamwork is essential. Children of all ages were assisting the adults and even Reverend Rusty Eidmann-Hicks helped by serving coffee. This particular Turkey Dinner Benefit was in memory of Robert “Bob” Liebenow who passed away on March 2, 2016. Bob was a lifelong member of this church who was active in the choir for over 50 years. He loved taking part in the planning and preparation of the turkey dinner and his presence was deeply missed.

Shore Favorite Jimmy Nicoletti to Headline Colts Neck Community Band Concerts
The Colts Neck Community Concert Band is pleased to announce its spring concerts for 2016, which will feature Colts Neck’s own Jimmy Nicoletti singing some of his favorite songs from the Frank Sinatra collection. Jimmy Nicoletti went from singing a cappella on the street corners of Newark to singing in various New York City clubs. Although he also studied acting, Jimmy found singing to be his greatest love, with the standards from The Great American Songbook being his passion. He is the vocalist for the Colts Neck Swing Band, and he has been delighting area fans for years. The Sinatra selections have been arranged for concert band by the band’s own Mark Chernoff, a talented and accomplished jazz musician who joined the band while still in high school and then returned after graduating from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Among the other works the band will perform are selections from Oklahoma; Salute to American Jazz, a Sammy Nestico medley of popular jazz tunes including St. Louis Blues, Birdland, It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing), and A Night in Tunisia; Tennessee Salute by Bill Holcombe, a
medley of five legendary melodies that have become a part of America’s musical landscape, including Your Cheatin’ Heart, Wabash Cannonball, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Tennessee Waltz and Rocky Top; an arrangement of the hymn Amazing Grace by Frank Ticheli; National Emblem March by Edwin Bagley; the Second Suite in F For Military Band by Gustav Holst; and Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual by Robert W. Smith that contains all the mystery, fire and intrigue of the Dark Continent and features the outstanding CNCB percussion section. The concerts will be presented on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at Colts Neck High School, located at Five Points Road in Colts Neck and on Thursday, June 2, 2016 in an openair concert in Monmouth County’s beautiful Thompson Park, located on Rt. 520/Newman Springs Road in Lincroft at 7:30 p.m. in the Activity Barn. The Colts Neck Community Concert Band has been hailed as one of the finest concert bands in the state of New Jersey. Members possess a wide range of musical backgrounds, from accomplished amateurs to seasoned professionals, who range in age from high school students to senior citizens. This talented group of musicians is under the guidance of Musical Directors Rich Grossman and Kelly Tyma, who, along with conductors Mel Chayette, Don Swinchoski, and Eric Robertshaw, lead the group in a diverse musical repertoire of marches, classical music, show tunes, and pop music. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear this critically acclaimed band in concert. Mark your calendars now to attend their always impressive performances! Admission to all concerts is free; donations are welcomed and are always appreciated. Musicians interested in joining the band may contact Rich Grossman at 732.833.7373 or artslovers@aol.com. Section openings are limited, and an audition is required for all potential members. For additional information, visit the www. coltsneckband.org and like them on Facebook.

Lincroft Elementary Leaps into
Great Reading Adventures! STORY DINA QUINTANO The Read Across America program kicked off on February 29, 2016 and this year Lincroft Elementary gave a special nod to Leap Year while celebrating the infamous Dr. Seuss! The week was a huge success thanks to the hard work of Christy Jenkins, Vice President of Programs, and the chairs, Liz Yeserski, Beth Cloke and Darcy Wilgus. The first day of Read Across America week the kids were greeted by Cat in the Hat and his two sidekicks, Thing 1 and Thing 2. It was a wonderful way to start the week and get the students excited about Read Across America. The following day was Reading Buddy Day, which paired younger students with older student readers. Students from third through fifth grade visited with the lower grades to read books. It was a great opportunity to spend time with the younger students while reading a variety of Dr. Seuss Books. During the week parents put on a riveting play based on the book “The Miss Nelson Collection”. The play was about a beloved and unappreciated teacher who teaches her students an important lesson about
valuing and respecting a good teacher. There were several contests during the week, and many students participated. The Favorite Book Photo contest challenged students to submit photos of them leaping into their most exciting reading adventures. The fourth grade winner, Carmine DeCrescenzo submitted pictures of himself during his visit to the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden in Springfield Massachusetts. In addition, there was a Comic Contest for students in K-2, and an Essay Contest for grades 3-5 that asked students to describe a visit to their homes from Thing 1 and Thing 2. All of the winners received “Book Fair Bucks” to the school’s spring book fair, and the upper grade winners will enjoy a pizza lunch with guest author David Adler, creator of the ever-popular Cam Jansen series. In between all the fun events of the week, students dressed up as their favorite literary characters. Liz Yeserski said, “Lincroft Elementary School had a wonderful week celebrating reading and learning about the power of great books.”

Ranney School’s Music Department congratulates ninth-grader Samantha Riebesell ‘19 of Manalapan and seventh-grader Olivia Batista ‘21 of Colts Neck who were accepted into the iTheatrics Summer Broadway Academy for the second year in a row! Olivia auditioned in New York City on March 5, 2016 at the iTheatrics headquarters along with several hundred other young performers from around the metropolitan area. Busy rehearsing for the Upper School’s recent production of Carousel, Samantha submitted her audition by video, as did hundreds of other students from around the country. Both girls were accepted and will take their place among the student cast of Pippin Jr. Each summer iTheatrics (the creators of the Broadway Junior series) pilots brand new adaptations in partnership with major licensing houses, such as Music Theatre International, Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc., Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Samuel French. Students accepted into the Broadway Academy spend one to two weeks working with professional theater artists on these adaptations. The culmination is a staged reading for invited families, educators, the authors of the show and representatives from the licensing houses, who review the results and revise show materials accordingly - all for the purpose of making these new adaptations available to schools and community theatre groups.

HOLMDEL HIGH SCHOOL W R EST LING T E A M BR E A K S S C HOOL R ECOR D The Holmdel Wrestling team has had an historic 2015-16 season. They finished the dual meet portion season with 18 wins, breaking the previous record of 14 that was set back in 2001. They also qualified for the NJSIAA sectional tournament for what is believed to be the first time in school history. Although they came up short, they took huge strides this season. Holmdel has plenty of wrestlers to thank for their success. They currently have two 30 match winners - Troy Gallo, junior (31-3) and Scott Dupont, sophomore (304). As well as five other 20 match winners - Dean Gallo, freshman (29-3), Chris Ammirati, junior (25-9), Garrett Hilsheimer, senior (29-5), Alexander Lambert, senior (24-8) and Seamus Wood, senior (21-13). Head Coach Danny Franke and Assistant Coach Daren Salor, have worked tirelessly and passionately to build a competitive wrestling team in a highly competitive district. The coaches are intent on building improvement and a winning team and have certainly achieved that this season!
OA K HILL AC A DEM Y CON T IN U ES I TS W INNING WAYS AT M . A . S .T. AC A DE M IC COM P ET I T ION Oak Hill Academy took home First place (for the third straight time) out of a 32 team field hosted by the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.). This “Jeopardy” style academic competition took place on March 4, 2016 at their M.A.S.T. campus on Sandy Hook. The competition consisted of a round robin preliminary round of eight groups of four teams each (with four team members competing) in a Jeopardy style competition where there were six categories. After the first three rounds were completed, the scores of the three rounds were totaled to create the seeding for the final rounds. After this result, Oak Hill occupied the second and third seeds overall! Unfortunately, this meant it was an Oak Hill 3 vs. Oak Hill 4 semi-final. In its semi-final, Team 3 (#2 seed) defeated Team 4 (#3 seed and defending champion from the spring). It was on to the finals versus Forrestdale 4 (who upset the Forrestdale 2, the #1 seed). It was a very challenging final round, but when it was all said and done, Oak Hill 3 emerged as the Champion winning 820 to 460! In the consolation round, Oak Hill 4 lost to top seeded Forrestdale 2 and earned 4th place. Rounding out the top three teams, Oak Hill 1 secured 9th place and Oak Hill 7 took home 11th. Congratulations to Team 3 team members (all eighth graders): Aron Wiener, Leah Wilson, Michael Zhang, Stephanie Zhou, Erin Gilfillan and Thomas Wang, and coached by Miss Patrice Murray and Mr. Joseph Pacelli. Team 4 team members (all seventh graders): Nicholas Geissler, Sydney Yan, Grant D’Orsi, Mason Garber, Jessica Yatvitskiy, and Elizabeth Lee, and coached by Mrs. Rita Cotterell.

The boys had an 11-0 regular season record in the Monmouth Ocean County Parochial Basketball League, allowing the team to compete for a playoff spot in the Diocese Championship. Prior to leaving for the game, the team attended 10:00am mass together at Saint Leo the Great Church in Lincroft, and were wished good luck by the pastor, Reverend John Folchetti, who celebrated the mass. Saint Leo the Great played St. Gregory of Hamilton Square. The teams were well-matched, and the game was close from start to finish. Unfortunately, the boys lost by 2 points in overtime with the final score of 32-34. “What was so special about them was how they played as a team. Never selfish, always looking out for each other,” said head coach, Brendon McKibbin. Competing in the Diocese of Trenton Championship was a special experience, and the team was proud to have the opportunity to represent Monmouth and Ocean counties, as well as their school and parish. RANNEY SCHOOL STUDENTS BUILDING A BOAT FROM SCRATCH FOR THE THIRD YEAR in a row, Ranney Middle School students in Tinton Falls are building a boat from scratch. Under the direction of Art Teacher Madeleine McCarthy and in collaboration with the nonprofit educational organization Project U.S.E., students are measuring, sawing, framing, gluing and screwing together a canoe. Starting with just two sheets of marine plywood, the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will launch their canoe later this spring in Deal Lake, with peer boat builders from the Sisters Academy in Asbury Park and Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft. “The boat building program offers our Middle School students a very unique opportunity,” says Mrs. McCarthy. “Through the process of building their boat, they are faced with ‘challenges by choice.’ In addition to team building, they learn how to safely use shop tools such as saws, drills and screw guns, and learn basic construction techniques. This program successfully empowers students to take on challenges which are out of their comfort zone and persevere to completion.” This year’s boat builders include: Tatiana Lanfranchi of Lincroft, John Leventhal of Colts Neck, Elena Raccuia of Farmingdale, John Tager-Geffner of Toms River and Hubert Wang of Holmdel. Students spend about 90 minutes working on the boat each week after school throughout the winter/ spring semester. They are recording their experience in an online “journal” on the Ranney website and will soon turn their blueprints into a decorative design to apply to the canoe. “It is a great pleasure to be partnering with Ranney School on another Project U.S.E. boat-building initiative,” adds Brendan Meehan, the nonprofit’s program director. “Project U.S.E.’s model of experiential learning serves as a great platform for creativity and character building. It is great to see how the students react with each step in the process of construction and I cannot wait to see the creativity that they give to their final paint design.” The boat launch will be at Deal Lake in Asbury Park on May 21, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.
OAK HILL ACADEMY TRANSFORMS INTO BRAZILIAN TOWN FOR LITTLETOWN DAY ON MARCH 9, 2016 - Oak Hill Academy’s Lower School (Grades K-4) was recreated for a day to resemble the wonderful South American country of Brazil. Throughout the day, children shared all that they have been learning about the culture, food, and activities that make up Brazil. Mrs. Linda Vacca is the Heads-On/Hands-On (Ho-Ho) teacher that is in charge of putting together Littletown Day along with all of her classes. The children were in charge of every part of life in Littletown from operating the “Toucan Treasury” Bank to running concessions at the “The Cocoa Bean Corner” and “Brazilian Bistro.” Oak Hill’s very own students provided musical entertainment at the “Monkey Music Hangout.” Mail was delivered by the “Parrot Post Office” down the “Amazon River” with kindergarteners providing river raft tours. Students were able to spend their “tinybucks” at the “Butterfly Book Store” or the “Tree Top Toy Store.” For recreation, residents of Littletown got to head out to the “Green Anaconda Gym” for some soccer fun and inflatable rides. Littletown Mayor, Headmaster Joseph Pacelli, was the town’s special guest. Mayor Pacelli proclaimed Littletown Day to big a huge success and a dynamic learning experience for the students.

THE MAKING OF FAITH – A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY TO HOPE Lincroft Presbyterian Church Hosts Book-Signing Evening
INFERTILITY, DEATH OF A 23-YEAR MARRIAGE, caring for ailing relatives, and raising two sons alone, one with severe autism - would bring most of us to our knees. For Vicky Baker, falling to her knees in prayer was the only way to find her way out from depression to a place of hope and joy. Join Lincroft Presbyterian Church’s Book Group for an author presentation and discussion of “The Making of Faith” with author and Middletown mother of two, Vicky Baker, on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. “Our book club always looks for interesting books to discuss from a variety of authors and genres. Vicky’s journey spoke to many of us, giving peace, hope and even resources, that take us from the darkest places back to light,” says LPC Book Group Leader Susan Guhse.
Vicky’s inspiration came from a voice within her to tell her to share her story and help her work through the difficulties of facing divorce, autism, overwhelming school obstacles, raising two sons, taking care of ailing parents and more of life’s curveballs. Throughout it all, her unwavering faith in God, kept her sane and able to rise above her circumstances to find a place of healing and hope. Vicky emphasizes, “The book is not about me…it’s about God working in our lives.” The free evening includes light refreshments and signed copies of the book, available for advance purchase at http://amzn.to/21ZM37I or http://bit.ly/1TsZ3xT. HOLMDEL BOARD OF EDUCATION NEWS 2016-2017 BUDGET
The Board of Education is currently developing the 2016-2017 budget. The various requests for funding from the schools and departments in the district are now being evaluated by the Board and will be discussed at upcoming Board meetings. Funding requests have been submitted for technology such as 3D printers, wireless microphones for the theater, and Chromebooks in the various schools. Also under consideration are requests from the Athletics department and the Buildings & Grounds team for facility improvements including field house lockers, a new turf field for Satz and replacement lights at Roggy Field. The Board will be evaluating all of these requests for funds and be making decisions at
upcoming BOE meetings. The community’s input on the budget is always welcome at the Board meetings.
HIGH SCHOOL RANKINGS
In February, the Board’s Community Relations Committee met with Holmdel High School Principal, Bill Loughran, to better understand the various metrics by which our high school is measured and ranked. The administration is analyzing the metrics to determine which best serve as a measurement of our district and will make recommendations to the Board as to how we can improve our rankings.
