Editor Notes INTERVIEW WITH CAROL STILLWELL I personally met Carol 30 years ago when I was just a kid, and knew at a young age what a special human being she was. I remember we were on the soccer field, she was there watching her son, I was there for my brother, she just looked at me and said, “Let’s go shopping!” This memory and that impromptu trip to the mall always flashes through my mind when I see Carol. But this story is Carol – she is so kind and generous to all she meets, and leaves you with an impressionable memory you don’t forget. At 70 years old, she can run circles around me, she is everywhere. Her world is built around other people, her philanthropic endeavors, and the company she runs. Carol Stillwell is center stage, making her a leading lady in Monmouth County. (Page 36)
GIVING BACK For eight months, our friend and Colts Neck resident Pam Molloy, has been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. She has resolved to stay positive and to enjoy and appreciate each day. Pam has a history of volunteering, so when she found out about the National Brain Tumor Society, she couldn't resist joining and helping to raise funds for a cure. On page 48, you will see information about an upcoming walk on the Asbury Park Boardwalk on April 29, 2017. Pam said she would be honored if readers would like to donate or join her team. You can join at braintumor.org and search for "Molloy's Marchers" (note: case and punctuation sensitive).
APRIL IS DONATE LIFE MONTH Are you an organ donor? If you are, that’s amazing! If you aren’t, why? In 2011, my father was dying. He was on “the list” awaiting a new heart, but if that didn’t come… but it did. He was fortunate enough to receive his new lease on life, but so many people pass while waiting for a life-saving transplant. I am so thankful to the person who decided to check off “organ donor” on their license for obvious reasons. Learn more about how you can help on page 32.
Enjoy our April issue!

Girl Scouts
OF THE JERSEY SHORE
Honor Distinguished Community Leaders at Annual Women of Distinction Event
The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore raised more than $155 thousand dollars during its annual Women of Distinction and Community Partners Gala on March 3, 2017 at Eagle Oaks Country Club. The annual event honors the personal and professional achievements of outstanding local individuals and organizations. During the black-tie optional affair, sponsored by Investors Bank, the Girl Scouts honored an amazing group of individuals. This year’s Women of Distinction included Regina Foley, Bayshore Community Hospital; Patricia Howard, United Healthcare – Optum 360; Victoria Magliacane, Investors Bank; and Dr. Stephanie Reynolds, Riverview Medical Center. The Junior Woman of Distinction was Hannah Morgan, an Ambassador Girl Scout from Beachwood. As its Community Partner, the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore honored The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation. And the Girl Scouts’ Man Enough to be a Girl Scout Man of the Year was Thomas Hayes, New Jersey Natural Gas. All honorees are from Monmouth and Ocean counties. They are dedicated to bettering the community and are valuable role models to girls as they become women of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Money raised from this Girl Scouts’ Gala will make a significant difference in the lives of girls in Monmouth and Ocean counties. That’s important because those girls need support more than ever. The reality they face is harsher today than it was 10 years ago. Consider, more girls are living in poverty and low-income households, obesity is on the rise for girls and fewer girls participate in physical education classes, the percentage of high school girls who seriously consider suicide has grown almost 20 percent, and reports of cyberbullying aimed at teen girls has doubled.
John K. Lloyd, president and chief executive officer, Meridian Health, congratulates two of his Meridian team members who were honored by the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore as Women of Distinction, Dr. Stephanie Reynolds, left, Director of Emergency Medicine, Riverview Medical Center, and Regina Foley, chief operating officer, Bayshore Community Hospital.
Left to right: Susan H. McClure, chief executive officer, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore, thanked Gina Petillo and Carol Stillwell with special Girl Scout-themed gifts during the Women of Distinction and Community Partners Gala. Petillo and Stillwell are honorary co-chairs of the event and previous Women of Distinction themselves.

This month as we embark on the edge of winter and the inevitable budding of spring as the world religions are in the throes of celebration, we will explore the benefits of the power of a glass of water and why simple acts of thoughtfulness matter. A few months back, I boarded a flight to Florida and settled into a seat, grateful that the client I was going to visit had agreed to pay for a first-class upgrade. A young man in a charcoal-gray suit, hoisted his luggage into an overhead bin, folded his jacket neatly on top, and took the seat across the aisle from me. A female flight attendant took orders for drinks; I asked for water. The young man wanted nothing. As the flight attendant was serving drinks to the passengers in first class, the people flying coach began to board. Among them was an elderly, frail-looking man with whispy white hair. He took the aisle seat in the first row behind the bulkhead separating first-class and coach. When the attendant was finished taking care of first class, she paused near the old man. Looking up, he asked her for a glass of water. She explained that drinks were not served in coach until after takeoff. He persisted, saying, “I’m very thirsty and I need to take my pills. Can’t you please get me a glass of water?” The attendant again refused, using the same dismissive, official tone. Her voice had a robotic quality to it - and it was “against the rules." I understood that she was following policy, but I was nonetheless put off that she denied an elderly man’s request. Others in first-class seemed perturbed as well; we looked at one another, searching for an ally, but no one said anything. Suddenly, the young man across the aisle left his seat, went to the attendant’s galley, and returned with a glass of water. He handed the glass of water to the elderly man and returned to his seat, ignoring the glare of the attendant, who seemed annoyed by his actions. The rest of us near the old man who witnessed the incident gave the young man a round of applause. Feeling relieved for the old man, but a bit ashamed that I didn’t get him a glass of water myself, I asked myself, why was I not as thoughtful and action-oriented as the young man was? During a family trip to the islands, we were in a taxi in the capital of this popular vacation destination. It is a chaotic, crazy place: the traffic, the noise, the colors, the jarring juxtaposition of the richest of the rich rubbing shoulders with the poorest of the poor. The city is a storm of sounds, smells, colors that assault your senses. My taxi was inching along a street teeming with people. There was a Mercedes in front of us, a cow, an overcrowded bus, shouting vendors, and men on mopeds whizzing by on either side. A man clad in rags slept on a filthy blanket on the sidewalk. Through the window of the car I saw a naked child, seven or eight years old, reaching his hand in a street drain. I asked my cab driver what the child was doing. “Sir, don’t look at it. Just ignore it.” I said, “No, no. I want to understand. What is he doing?” Once again he told me to ignore the

child. Frustrated, I said, “Just stop here.” I got out of the car and, using the local language, I asked the child what he was doing. He said, “Sir, I’m just seeing if any food is passing through this drain, I dig it out, wash it, and eat it.” I was speechless. When I regained my wits, I took the boy to a shop nearby, “Whatever this child wants, give it to him.” He chose a few things, I paid for them, a few US dollars, and then we parted forever. Our taxi had not advanced very far in the traffic and I got in again. I did not think, it was an instantaneous reaction, much like the actions of the young man on the plane. Having witnessed poverty during my childhood in New York City, I knew that any human being, if they were hungry enough, might be forced to gather food from the gutter. This was unlike me. I was not one of those bleeding hearts and have stepped over many a homeless person, callused by my growing up and working in Manhattan for decades. But in that moment, I felt a responsibility to do something. Nothing more, nothing less. For that one moment I was able to have a small positive impact, just as the young man on the plane that day made a difference to the elderly man. I believe there are moments in everyone’s day (I know I’m being over dramatic). Metaphorically, these are moments when a colleague, a friend, or a family member has a hand in a drain, searching for something they need in a difficult time, or who simply needs a “glass of water.” Those moments are opportunities to act in a thoughtful way, to be attentive to others, considerate, unselfish, and provide comfort or aid. Being thoughtful is a two-step process. The first step involves listening, at work, to your customers and your employees; at home, to your spouse and to your children; in your personal life, to your doctor, elders, trusted friends, or advisors. A typical study on our ability to listen (there are many out there), suggests that we listen about 24% - 45% of the time we spend communicating with others. I think we can all agree that listening is a critically important skill, and that we can do better. If you don’t listen to others, you cannot possibly be thoughtful. Listening to others purposefully involves not just hearing what they have to say, but trying to put yourself in their shoes. It involves empathy and understanding. When we place ourselves in another person’s shoes, or see things from another’s point of view, and then act for their benefit - when we are being empathetic - we are practicing what it means to be thoughtful.

Run The Hook 5k & 10k Race to Benefit Clean Ocean Action Run The Hook 5K & 10K is back at one of the Jersey Shore’s most historic locations for a race to keep our oceans wild and pollution free. Peak Projects, the company behind Run The Hook, Asbury Park Santa Run, and The Brew Hop 5K & Craft Beer Festival, is pleased to announce the 2nd annual race, taking place on May 14, 2017 at Sandy Hook National Park. The race challenges runners and walkers of all abilities to complete a 5K or 10K course in support of local charity, Clean Ocean Action, a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to restoring, improving, and protecting the water quality of New Jersey’s oceans. All runners will receive a t-shirt, finisher gift, closed scenic course in Sandy Hook National Park, chip timed results, and access to the after party with their registration. A portion of the proceeds from the race will go directly to the charity to support their work in the local community. After the race, there will be an after party nearby at a to-be-announced location to celebrate with drink specials, food, and entertainment. Early Bird registration is officially sold out with advanced priced tickets selling quickly. Last year’s event sold out in advance with over 1,000 runners attending. Those who wish to participate this year are advised to register in advance to secure their spot for 2017. Following registration, runners have the ability to fundraise for the event via EverydayHero - with a challenge to raise $300 per runner and an overall goal of $100,000. 100% of all fundraising efforts will go to Clean Ocean Action. Speaking about the event, Peak Projects co-founder, Joey Garofalo of Little Silver noted, “I’ve been supporting Clean Ocean Action since I was a kid attending their beach walks and it has always been clear that the organization places a large emphasis on community and family. With this year’s event falling on Mother’s Day, we encourage all of our supporters to come out and make the event a family outing. You can run with the kids or enjoy the scenic waterfront course with mom. Either way, celebrate Mother’s Day by supporting Mother Earth!” “All waters run to the sea, and now you can run to help keep it wild and free from pollution. Run the Hook is the perfect way to celebrate good health for you and the ocean,” said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action. “This year’s run is truly a family opportunity. Bring your mom to walk or run and together you can make it a Mother’s Day with Mother Ocean on beautiful Sandy Hook. We are so thrilled and honored to be a beneficiary of this great event." Monmouth Film Festival Returns Summer 2017 Prepare for another great season of top-quality, independent cinema in Monmouth County! Last December, Monmouth Film Festival (MFF) made its mark during its inaugural event at Two River Theater in Red Bank - attracting audiences from across the tri-state area; receiving rave reviews and top ratings. Film critic Joan Ellis of the Two River Times wrote, “The production quality, scripting, and acting of all the films was extremely high and the subject matter was refreshingly original.“ What an amazing first-year event this festival is. Everything was done first class with entertainment in mind,” commented Associate Director of the NJ Film Commission, David Schoner. The Festival and its programming team search endlessly to find the hidden gems amongst the film industry. As the President of the company states, “There are no favorites, no special treatments, and no ‘good old boys club’. Every film gets the same fair opportunity to be chosen.” The festival is currently accepting submissions for its 2017 season, which will take place August 10 through August 13, 2017 at Two River Theater in Red Bank. COLTS NECK
AUTHOR Pens Romance Novel
Set in Monmouth County
Local author and long-time Colts Neck resident, Cathy Padilla, is changing the way romance novels are written while attempting to tackle the negative image New Jersey sometimes has in entertainment. A Taste for Love, available April 18, 2017 through online book stores such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com, is part of her For Love series that is set in Monmouth County. Published by Clean Reads, the novel is what is referred to in the industry as a ‘clean romance’ with no explicit sex, violence, or curse words. “I wanted to write a book my eighty-oneyear-old mother could read without blushing – a story an aunt could share with her teenage niece. Think Hallmark movies or the romantic comedies of the 1980s. I love a great love story, so why not make it about the story and the characters instead of the steam and the heat? I also wanted to write a book set in New Jersey, our area specifically, that talks about the farms and green areas, the beach and the beauty. Television shows like Jersey Shore, the Housewives, and our beloved Sopranos showed so much of the negative side of our state.” The setting for the book is both the rolling hills of Holmdel and the sandy beaches of the Jersey shore. Monmouth County is portrayed as an elegant and luxurious area, with the beauty of the ocean and the quiet of the farms and open spaces highlighted. Several local businesses are named, and anyone familiar with the area will recognize many of the references in the novel. Padilla uses the tagline: New Jersey – Where Love Blooms and Gardens Grow. “The book is set on the farm my grandparents owned in Holmdel from the 1950s through 1980s, it was called Longview Farm. Beau Ridge and Quail Hollow developments are there now. There’s not too much that isn’t completely made up about the story, but those who know my family well will recognize some of the names and a tidbit or two. My grandfather’s surname was Teixeira – so the family name ‘Texmara’ in the book is meant to honor him.”

Every Parent's Battle: The New Bully On the Block
BULLYING! It’s the B-word that sends shivers down a parent’s spine and a sharp pain to the heart. Adults are already familiar with the antics of a mean girl from school (remember the backstabbing clique from the movie, Heathers) or a bad boy from town (no one wanted to mess with Johnny Lawrence from The Karate Kid), but our children are being introduced to a new nightmare on the block. Unlike, the trash talk and scheduled fist fights we grew up witnessing in the school parking lot, today, kids are faced with a whole new set of hurling threats, sophisticated pranks, and defaming cyber-attacks at a younger age. When confronted with this hurtful behavior, parents are as unprepared as their children. In order to help make sense of this bullying style, Holly Brown, LMFT and novelist, guides parents on how to recognize warning signs, identify where the aggression stems from, and how to protect their family from being an easy target.
28
CM: Every mom and dad wants the best for their children. What are the tools parents can implement when dealing with a potential bullying problem? Also, how can a parent talk to their child and draw the line between being a kid and being a bully?
pecially to people who seem to have less power; who takes their belongings; who forces them to do what they don’t want to do. Ask your children to add to that list, and to give you real-life examples they’ve observed.
HB: For a lot of kids, bullying is really a mask for a lack of social skills, and perhaps a lack of self-esteem. So one of the best things parents can do is foster a sense of competence in their children CM: Is there a universal definition for a bully? so they don’t try to feel better by making HB: There are a number of definitions, but other kids feel worse. Fostering positive what’s generally agreed upon is that bulfriendships and positive social skills is lies intimidate, demean, and/or humiliate key. Notice how your kids talk to othothers. Some people employ a bullying er people, and look for moments where style in most or all situations; for others, you can highlight empathy for others (i.e. it’s specific to certain people or situations “How do you think that made her feel?” (like if they think someone is weak, or that “Do you remember when Bobby talked to it’ll be easier to get away with it). From a you that way, and what that was like?”) psychological perspective, what makes a Define for your kids what a bully is: bully is a subconscious desire to elevate someone who humiliates people; who themselves at the expense of others. says harsh, cruel, and hurtful things, es-
Monitoring your kids’ social media and having discussions about what you’re seeing is important. Social media can be very dehumanizing, and people (adults as well as kids) feel freer to say what they would never say to someone’s face. Yet reading hurtful things is just as painful as hearing them out loud.
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
CM: Do you deal with a lot of parent bullies? What is the biggest mistake they make when raising kids? What is the biggest mistake they make in their own lives? HB: I’ve been practicing therapy for sixteen years, so in that time, I’ve seen my share of parent bullies. The first mistake
is just a lack of awareness. I’ve had parents who come in saying, “I don’t know why my son acts like this!” and then I’ll witness those parents speaking incredibly harshly to their children. They’re not making the connection. The biggest mistake anyone can make, I think, is to minimize their own role. What we model is what our kids take in. When we put everything entirely on them without seeing ourselves as part of the equation, we’re abdicating our responsibility as parents. One of the hardest things about parenting is that we’re called upon not just to help our kids, but to consistently improve ourselves so that we’re not merely telling them how to act, we’re showing them every day.

CM: I know you wrote a fiction book about adult bullying. Do you think there is a growing trend in this behavior? What lessons or experiences can someone take away from reading your book? HB: In my novel, This Is Not Over, the two main characters mutually engage in bullying behavior, but I’d say that it’s actually a novel about women who are in denial about their own private pain and what’s really going on with their lives and families. As a result, they project things onto one another, becoming increasingly enraged. It’s like slow-motion road rage. And unfortunately, I do think that’s a growing trend. This country feels like it’s getting angrier. But often when we’re furious with others, we really need to look inward. So that’s what I’d hope people take away from the book--the lesson of self-reflection, self-awareness, and personal responsibility. CM: Do you recommend ever confronting a bully one-on-one? HB: With a child, no, I don’t recommend confronting. While you sometimes hear, “If you stand up to a bully, they back down,” it’s also true that you could be putting your child in more physical danger. It could backfire in other emotional ways as well. If your child confides that they’re being bullied, praise them for having the courage to talk to you about it, and reassure them that this is a problem for adults to handle. There should be a policy in every school about how to handle bullying. Contact the school, find out what the policy is, and share what’s going on with your child. I know that sometimes people contact the other, bullying child’s parents. I wouldn’t recommend this. It’s best to let the school implement their policy, while being apprised of your rights.

Lincroft PTA held their 2017 fundraising event “Denim and Diamonds” on March 10, 2017 at Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club. The event was open to the Lincroft School community. The 220 guests in attendance enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner. This was the second year the PTA held “Denim and Diamonds” and guests had the choice to wear something that sparkled or jeans. And as Vice President of Fundraising Heather McGrath noted, “Everyone loves wearing jeans.” Once inside, guests had their choice of games. Those who wanted a bit of a challenge tried their luck at the new Hole-In-One Putting Green which was a chance to win an extra ticket board for the Denim Raffle Baskets. Heather McGrath was grateful to everyone involved with the event. “This is such a fun night for parents and Lincroft School staff! I would like to thank our event chair Jenna Caniff and the rest of the Gala Committee for all of their efforts in putting on an amazing event! The money raised supports all of the wonderful educational enrichment opportunities for students at Lincroft Elementary.” PTA Board President Meg Connolly said, “This year’s Lincroft School Gala was a wonderful evening full of fun for all who attended. Special thanks to Jenna Canniff and the amazing team of volunteers who made it all possible.”

April is Donate Life
Month
In 2013, Samantha Denti was 28-years-old and facing the end of her life when a heart transplant at University Hospital gave her a second chance. The nearly four years she has spent with friends and family would not be possible without her donor. “I don’t know the name of my donor, but I know that I am forever grateful. That is my hero,” Samantha said. Since she is so grateful for the new life she has been given, Samantha does all she can to share the message of organ and tissue donation with her community. While she raises awareness throughout the year, April carries a special meaning for her and others like her because it is Donate Life Month. Donate Life Month features an entire month of local and national events and activities to share the life-saving message of organ and tissue donation. With over 120,000 people waiting for life-saving transplants and 22 dying each day while waiting, it is the goal of Donate Life Month to educate the public on this critical need. Just one organ donor can save the lives of eight people and one tissue donor can restore health to over 75 others. In New Jersey, NJ Sharing Network is the organization responsible for saving and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation. The organization works tirelessly each day to provide transplants for those on the waiting list and help increase the community’s knowledge of donation and transplantation. NJ Sharing Network’s supporters will be participating in Donate Life Month by hosting educational sessions, sharing information at local events and encouraging others to learn more about organ and tissue donation. Each year, the community also participates in Blue and Green Day by wearing blue and green in support of the greatest gift: the gift of life.
In 2013, Samantha Denti was 28 years old and received a heart transplant at University Hospital, which gave her a second chance.
This April, anyone can get involved during Donate Life Month in the following ways:
• Registering as an organ and tissue donor at NJSharingNetwork.org • Having a conversation with family and friends about donation • Participating in Blue and Green Day on April 21, 2017 April will be a busy month as supporters across the state save lives by sharing an important message. Lincroft Village Green Association Plans
2 Annual “Lincroft Eats” Food Truck Fest nd
Thousands enjoyed the Inaugural “Lincroft Eats” Food Truck Festival in 2016, the Lincroft Village Green Association promises this year’s event will be even better! The Lincroft Village Green Association (LVGA) is planning its 2nd Annual “Lincroft Eats” Food Truck Festival at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. The fundraising event will be held Friday, June 16, 2017 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will once again have popular food trucks, craft vendors, live music, a classic car show, and kids’ activities. The fundraising effort will add to the LVGA General Fund, which supports the LVGA Community Scholarship, free events hosted by the LVGA at the Lincroft Village Green and park beautification projects. After the success of last year’s festival, with more than 3,000 attendees, and the enthusiastic reviews received from the community, the board of directors decided to plan an even bigger and more exciting community event. New this year, the LVGA is adding a classic car show to the festival. Classic car owners and auto club members can visit lincroftvillagegreen.org for registration. Space is limited; early registration is encouraged. With such a variety of activities, there is sure to be something for all ages to enjoy! Back by popular demand are the food trucks - Empanada Guy, Luke’s Lobster, Outslider and Oink and Moo to name a few. Also returning is the band Not-OnCall, whose members are multi-talented cardiology doctors and nurses from Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Like last year, the musical line-up will also have young local talent, with Kat Phunk taking the stage early in the show. The LVGA is also accepting applications for art and craft vendors and plans to again have a variety of craft tents fill the large open area of the Brookdale campus. Craft vendor applications and more information about “Lincroft Eats” can be found at lincroftvillagegreen.org. Also new this year, the LVGA is asking for local businesses and individuals to sponsor the event. The generosity of sponsors will help pay for overhead costs such as the sound system, power generators, advertising banners, and facility fees. Admission is $5 for adults, children 12 and under are free. “Lincroft Eats” will take place in Parking Lot 1, located near the Monmouth Museum with ample parking available. Bring your beach chair and blankets and relax. No outside food or beverage is allowed, so please do not bring coolers. Brookdale is a smoke-free and alcohol-free college campus. A Leading Lady in Monmouth County
Carol Stillwell
Story Shanna Polignone | Photo Melissa Amorelli at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank
“She who leaves a trail of glitter is never forgotten.” Carol Stillwell is a woman with a sparkling energy that lingers long after she has left the room. She takes the lead in creating the life that she loves. Although it may seem she is at center stage, it truly is the people who are around her that are at the center of her world. She is a focused and dedicated business woman, with a heart overflowing with love and compassion for others. Carol works hard at creating success in all aspects of her life, and she does it just so she can give it all away. Her world is built around other people, her philanthropic endeavors, and the company she runs where she lovingly refers to her employees as family. Carol, in business, stands as the president of Stillwell-Hansen, Inc. Stillwell-Hansen,
36
Inc is a company that specializes in being an HVAC solutions provider for all computer room sales and service needs, as well as commercial fire alarm, detection and suppression services.
She was raised to believe that with hard work and perseverance she could achieve any goal which she set for herself. When she began her career 50 years ago, she had a strong desire to be in construction. During that time, it was unheard of for a woman to succeed in the male dominate industry, she was determined to make it work. Growing up she would often hear her mother say to her, “Carol Ann, if you do not believe in yourself, how could you expect anyone else to believe in you?” Carol took her mother’s
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
words to heart, committed herself to the job, and took advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow.
It was in 1969 when she came to StillwellHansen, Inc, and proved that she was truly dedicated to the construction craft. She slowly gained the respect needed to thrive and has since succeeded even beyond her own expectations. Carol heads Stillwell-Hansen, Inc with a servant’s heart, and the lines between work and home are non-existent, she is the same in every aspect of her life and treats everyone around her with love and care. Today the company has grown to more than 70 employees with over 70 million dollars in sales annually.
Carols’ journey of building her career was filled with life and events that shaped her world. These experiences put her belief in herself to the test and set her on a path of giving.
Her philanthropic journey began when her dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer. It was in the hospital where he was being treated that Carol made a deal with God, “Just get him though this and I promise you I’ll do everything I can to give back.” Both she and God held up their end of the deal. Her father survived and Carol’s focus on philanthropy began. Her first endeavor was created through her love of horses and the equestrian world. Carol teamed up with Riverview Medical Center and began the Race for Riverview. Through the years she has given tremendously to organizations that are close to her heart. “I willingly and joyfully share all I have with others in need. I truly believe in the power of giving; the fulfillment I receive in my soul is far more than any number a bank statement could provide.”
Most recently, Carol was able to give three million dollars to the Oncology Infusion Center at Riverview Medical Center. She says this has been her proudest moment. Upon being invited to view the room, once she saw the beauty and comfort being offered she knew she had to be a part of it. “If you have ever in your life taken a breath and known that something felt so right,” she said in regards to being able to give to the Center.
The Center has since been named LarkinStillwell Hansen Infusion Center.
In 1983, Carol proved to herself and the world what she was made of when she was in a car accident that left her in a coma, with chances of survival looking slim. She was read her last rites, but Carol defied the odds and recovered. Through her healing she endured many surgeries, lost some memories and had to learn to walk again. It was then she said, “I knew God had a mission for me.” She’s lived every day since filled with doing and giving as much as she can. She sees each day as a gift. Carol doesn’t often use the word no. She won’t say no to a cause; she has been known to find a way or make a way. This leaves her schedule packed, with meetings, events, fundraisers, dinner with friends and acquaintances, to name a few - and there is not a thing she would change. She loves the crazy, hectic schedule of her life.
Her late husband Gordon would say being married to Carol was like being strapped to a rocket ship, you need to hold on for the ride because you are never certain where you are going to land. Carol believes this is still true and has no plans on slowing down. Most recently she was awarded People’s Choice and the Judge’s Award at The Ashley Lauren Foundation’s 6th Annual Butterfly Ball “DANCING FOR OUR STARS” competition. The Ashley Lauren Foundation provides hope and help for children and families battling pediatric cancer.
This coming May, Carol will be celebrating her 70th birthday, alongside her twin sister, Mary Ann. In true Carol style, she is hosting the party so she can give to others. Her goal is to raise money for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, B.E.A.T Center and Lunch Break. The party is intended to celebrate their 70 years, but they are doing it solely to give back.
Through it all for a woman who is always on the go, Carol is grounded in those that she loves. Her heart fills with pride when she refers to Mary Ann, calling her “a true gift to me.” Her son Scott, she says is “the love of my life.” She is so grateful for both him and his wife Megan, and how they “so willingly share me with the world.” On rare occasions, she finds the time to vacation at her favorite destination Napa Valley. It is there where she has such wonderful memories of her late husband Gordon. She enjoys bringing friends to experience what Gordon referred to as “God’s Country.”
She attributes so much of who she is and so much of the legacy she is leaving to the wisdom of her late husband Gordon. The best advice she has ever been given came from him - “If you spend today worrying about the what if of tomorrow then you have lost today.” She tries to pass this on whenever possible, while living each day she has in the moment, doing all that she can to make a difference, leading by example and encouraging others to do the same.

Uncovering Hidden Epicurean Delights
PAZZO - crazy good italian food and the seven year itch When Pazzo opened in June 2010 in Red Bank, it was all the rage and it was impossible to get a table “unless you knew someone.” Seven years later it has matured into one of Red Bank’s staples for consistently authentic tastes and wonderful atmosphere. This is a true Italian experience close to home with the principal owners, Mario Dell’Anno and his sons Robert at the operational helm, and Richard dedicated to its menu of “quality authentic Italian” with attention to detail and top quality local grown fresh - as well as imported ingredients from Italy. As a tactical bonus it’s one of the only top hot spots in Red Bank with free adjoining parking. Pazzo also sports one of the largest enclosed outdoor heated patios in Monmouth County with windows that open “al fresco” when the weather allows. This is one of those restaurants that has become a Food Spy “go-to” for the simple fact that you can always rely on a good quality meal. The atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant are upbeat and not quite casual yet not formal. I think it was the “city-like” look that pulled me in the first time, but it’s the food, comfortableness and service that keeps you coming back. The owners and staff welcome you like you’re a regular, and who doesn’t like that feeling? But on to the important stuff - the food. The Carciofo Ripieno (artichoke stuffed full with breadcrumbs, garlic, and cheese and drizzled in truffle oil) is a FoodSpy must-have appetizer along with the staple calamari, which is fried to perfection and tender. The show stopper was a special. The octopus salad with fennel was amazingly tender and the Cape Sante, sea scallops served over Jersey corn relish with a pancetta vinaigrette was tastefully unique. For main courses, you really need to listen carefully to your server, as the specials are just that … special with a nice mix of meats, fish and pastas. Wait… but if you have time and the appetite, you should slow down (like true Italians and don’t rush through your meal), and you MUST try a pizza for the table - either the white broccoli rabe pie, the white clam pie or The FoodSpy personal fave, the Black Mission fig and goat cheese with arugula and balsamic truffle oil – any of which make for a perfect leftover snack or lunch. And you need to save room for the entrée! There is a vast selection and once again, don’t be shy to speak to the server for advice (like the days before GPS and you had to pull over and ask for directions). The pastas leave no stone unturned so it REALLY depends on your taste. The truffle cream sauce with a medley of mushrooms with imported Grana Padano cheese over your choice of pasta is special. The fish and meat entrees are too numbered to mention, but I’ll give a special call-out to the simplicity of a great Veal Milanese or the Grilled Chop served with sautéed Wild Mushrooms, Baby Spinach, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and a Port Wine Reduction (and if you’re into spicy, try a side of Italian Long Hot Peppers). The night we were there, the highlight was an East Coast Halibut with Tuscan White Beans, Sautéed Escarole and Plum Tomatoes in a White Wine Broth – delicioso! As a special bonus, Pazzo has great deals such as half price pizza, pasta and wine nights and half price appetizers and drink specials on weekdays. It also has a perfect spot for a pre-theatre meal, as The Count Basie Theatre and Two River Theater are a short block away. With all these variables included, I could give this place 6 stars. The owners and managers circulate to the tables making sure everyone is happy – that’s the way a restaurant should be run. Pazzo has a city upbeat feel with small town coziness. Delicious drinks, good food – what else can you ask for? I am sure that this place will continue to pack them in as it has made it past a restaurant’s “Seven Year Itch” as it moves into solid matured status in a town that has seen Italian food come and go. This is mainly because of the quality of the food, the dining room boasting an exciting atmosphere and the open kitchen offering an inside look, which creates a welcoming feel. The al fresco dining year-round on the enclosed, temperature-controlled patio and the eclectic bar offer a full menu and a lively setting with LED flat screens that create an upscale casual environment. And for those who venture to Red Bank, especially on the weekends, know that parking is always a challenge – not at Pazzo. The free parking in the multi-level parking deck makes this a Food Spy “go-to.” Pazzo is located at 141 West Front Street in Red Bank. Call 732.747.4551 for reservations, and tell Rob the Food Spy sent you; he’ll be sure to make your evening enjoyable.

We could all use a tune-up now and then, but Dr. Kevin Clark, DAOM, L.Ac. isn’t working on our cars. Many of his patients come in for general “maintenance” or just to unwind from a hectic lifestyle. Garden State Acupuncture & Wellness in Colts Neck, opened by Dr. Clark this past fall, brings the art of healthful massage to the area. His methods toward wellness help with everything from sports injuries, to chronic pain and headaches, to digestive problems and reproductive issues. “I’ve met so many wonderful people. I’m extremely thankful for the outpouring of support and appreciation I have received since being here,” Dr. Clark says. “I had previously worked for a couple of years at another company at the shore that was extremely fast-paced and high volume. I had to be in and out of the treatment room in 10 minutes or less. That didn’t give me enough time to really get to know my patients and do a complete intake of medical history. I missed the freedom and pace that private practice allows, so I made it my goal to make the transition and open my own place.” Dr. Clark incorporates Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a complete system to treat internal disease and orthopedic disorders. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame where he graduated with honors in Social/Cultural and Medical Anthropology. It was there he began focusing on more traditional systems of medicine and healing. He received a grant to study medicine men in Peru and noticed many aspects of Chinese medicine used in the local traditional forms of healing. This sparked an interest to study TCM in greater detail, and in 2010 he traveled to China and studied there at a teaching hospital. During his internship he focused on clinical applications of Chinese herbs in dermatology, cardiology, and andrology (male reproductive system). Chinese medicine focuses on finding the imbalances within the body causing disease, and works to restore those balances so the body may heal itself. Instead of addressing symptoms, TCM looks at the individual as a whole - physical, mental, and emotional states. People who receive treatments regularly often report having healthier immune systems, greater ability to process and manage stress, improved relationships with others,
and a greater overall sense of well-being. “I think sometimes the benefits of acupuncture get lost in the mystery. There’s a lot of fear and uncertainty surrounding it,” Dr. Clark says. “What I’d love to help local residents achieve is the realization that wellness does not need to be impossible or cost-prohibitive. One doesn’t have to live with stress or pain. I’m happy to sit down with anyone, at any time, and discuss what is going on in their life and different ways they may be able to find their own sense of balance.” Traditional Chinese Medicine also has a large preventative aspect. Not only does it benefit those who are suffering from various ailments or pain, but it also helps to maintain a state of well-being and prevent sickness or injury. Dr. Clark says, “When our bodies are balanced and our minds are centered, we are better able to handle the stresses from day-to-day life - be they work, home, or school-related. When this happens, our immune systems are able to work more efficiently to keep us at an optimal state of health. This can be especially beneficial for those undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy.” Dr. Clark has always liked to challenge his body through movement. Because of his love of running, surfing, rock-climbing, hiking, CrossFit, and yoga, Dr. Clark knows all-too-well about the injuries that may happen to even the most seasoned athletes. This love and understanding has allowed him to use his knowledge of both Eastern and Western traditions to facilitate each individual’s return to well-being. LINCROFT RESIDENT PENS FITNESS AND HEALTH BOOKS
The Smith Family of Lincroft
Story Susan Murphy
The life of a writer is one of balance that to longevity and brain health at Canyon includes rising early, disciplined daily writ- Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts; was a ing, and many late nights putting pen-to- guest presenter on special population topics paper. Such is the case with Lincroft resi- at the World Spinning Conference; and has dent William Smith, a published author been featured on NBC. Smith noted that who has written 14 fitness and health books after Frediani brought him in for the initial for Random House/Hatherleigh Press over “interview” with Hatherleigh Press/Random the last 11 years. House, it led to an eleven-year relationship. “I am currently pursuing six new books over In 2005, Smith co-wrote his first book, the next several years,” he added. “Tri-Power: A Strength Training Book for Triathletes,” with Paul Frediani, which was published in July, 2007. The two had worked together in New York City so Frediani asked Smith to co-author the strength training book. Smith explained, “Since high school, I was around endurance sports and elite athletes from marathons and triathletes. Having completed marathons and triathlons, at the time, it was a perfect fit. I was training endurance athletes as a strength coach.” Next, Smith wrote a series of six books on addressing medical conditions through therapeutic exercise. “Special population training was a passion of mine since college, beginning with a gentleman that had cystic fibrosis that I trained in an exercise prescription course.” Over the years, Smith has presented on topics relating to health and fitness at several locations. He spoke on topics relating

Smith explained that every one of his books has a story behind it as to why he chose to write about the topic. “My grandfather Bill Corley was the impetus for my book ‘Exercises for Better Balance,’ and I wrote a dedication to him in the foreward.” He shared, “My grandfather passed away from complications related to a fall in 2013. He was 92-years-old, walked four to five miles and actually did exercises from my Heart Healthy book every day. He fell in Lincroft one day on a walk to the bank. My grandmother had a fall two years later, and my wife’s grandparents had falls as well, which led to health complications.” This is why the topic of exercising for better balance touched him personally; and why he hoped others might benefit by reading his book. Smith said that all of his books written

on medical conditions are reviewed and are provided forewords by physicians. “Many of the healthcare providers that provided forewords are those I have worked with for years, thus they trusted my approach to exercise programming for their patients.”
Currently, Smith works at Atlantic Health System. “I work closely with companies to support the health and wellness initiatives related to their employee well-being. Our department provides medical services and healthy living programs generally tied into the impact healthcare costs and how we can help lower those through behavior and lifestyle modification programs. My role has helped me broaden my understanding of the healthcare field and how prevention, particularly from the physical activity standpoint, can create healthier communities.” Smith met his wife Angela when they were personal trainers in a gym. “So we try to get to the YMCA in Red Bank every opportunity we can get.” Married eight years, Smith and his wife have three boys, aged five and under. In the summer, they go to the beach, which the boys love. “I am the oldest of 33 grandchildren, so every chance we get, we love to hang out with family,” shared Smith. Born in Staten Island, Smith lived with his grandparents for four years.
“My father’s work took us to Maine, South Dakota and we ultimately settled in Michigan, where I grew up for the majority of my life. My mom and dad’s sides both ended up migrating in the 1980’s to Monmouth County settling in Colts Neck, Middletown, Spring Lake and Lincroft.” In 2007, Smith experienced what he called “a life-defining moment.” He was reunited with his biological father. “My parents set it up, and by enabling this moment, my biological father and his family were able to attend our wedding in 2009. A moment that reunited two families that grew up together on Staten Island. This will be a time I will cherish forever and we are close to this day.”
Balancing family, work and writing are challenging, but Smith’s description of his typical day fits it all in. “Up at 4:30 a.m., work out (usually rowing at home), have coffee, get the kids up at 5:30 a.m., help my wife get them out the door by 6:00 a.m. to daycare. She then heads off to work as a high school guidance counselor. Most days I’m in Morris County or other various New Jersey counties meeting with companies that want to begin health and wellness programs on-site for their employees. I get home around 5:30 p.m. or so and help my wife get the kids ready for school the next day.” Around 10:00 p.m. I write for an hour or so. I write about 300-500 words every night. It is a commitment I made to myself to be better. After that, then I hit the hay!”

Smith shared this with our readers. “Passion and ideas are great but execution is where many of us fall off. I know this is true with me. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. We should learn from our failures, because if you are not failing, you are not trying. You want to write, start a business, become the expert at craft brews, whatever it is, don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done. We live in a revolutionary time with the internet, allowing creative minds to share their message in seconds. Share your creative voice.” A wide variety of fitness/health books written by William Smith, as well as many books he co-wrote with colleagues can be found at amazon.com/William-Smith-Fitness.

As he has grown as an author, Smith said the creative process has taught him a lot about who he is as an educator, husband, father, and son. “At the heart of the writing is an entrepreneurial spirit to continue helping others through passionate endeavors,” he said. Writing is a process and it is hard work, he noted. “The most difficult aspect is just doing it. Don’t over analyze or be critical, just write. I’ve spoken to so many people that have a book idea or concept and they don’t know how to get started. My advice is to start writing and don’t look back. In fact, my process starts with a drill my ‘life coach’ taught me. Take a central concept you are interested in, write it down, and circle it. Then every phrase you can think of related to that main concept branches off. Place this into a list and you have the start of an index.”
Currently, Smith is working on six new books through the publishing house which include “Exercises for Perfect Posture” and “Exercises for Cardiac Recovery.” He and a cousin are also working on a self-publishing/creative process book. “It will walk someone through the creative process all the way to marketing their book.” Readers that wish to receive updates on the release can email wstrength@aol.com.

ARIANA MANGANO OF COLTS NECK
Makes U.S. World Cadet & Junior World Fe n c i n g Te a m s Ranney School sophomore Ariana Mangano of Colts Neck is taking her love for and skill in fencing all the way to the World Championships this spring! With epee as her weapon of choice, the 15-year-old continues to earn district, state, and national titles in individual events across the country – the most recent being her placement on the U.S. World Cadet and U.S. Junior World Fencing Teams. She will compete with fencers from across the globe at the April 2017 tournament in Bulgaria. Ariana traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, over Presidents’ Day weekend to compete in USA Fencing’s Junior Olympic event to determine whether she would qualify for the World Teams – and after four days of battling on the strip, she did. “I have worked and trained very hard this season, and I am honored to have the opportunity to fence for the United States at the World Championships on both the Cadet and Junior World teams,” said Ariana. “My goal for this season was to try and make the Cadet team— making the Junior team was completely unexpected. I am really privileged to be able to fence with my teammates on both teams. They are a very talented group of fencers, and I really like them all. We will be fencing together shortly at the Pan American Zonal Championship in Cuba, and I am hoping it goes well. I know that I would never have been able to do all of this if I did not have the support and love from my parents, my coaches, and all my teachers. I feel like we are the Mangano team!” Just a few weeks ago, Ariana won the championship title in epee at the New Jersey State Prep State Fencing Tournament, held on Ranney School’s Monmouth County campus on February 13, 2017 among 15-plus teams. Man-

gano earned the same title at the 2016 State Prep Tournament. She is currently ranked #2 in the Nation for Cadets, #4 in Juniors, and #7 in Seniors after winning three golds (Cadet Women’s Epee, Junior Women’s Epee, Cadet Team Women’s Epee) at the November North American Cup (NAC) and silver in the Division I NAC event in December 2016. During the 2015-16 season, Mangano titled in the 2016 NJSIAA State Individual Championships and the NJSIAA State Individual tournament. She also made the NJIFA All State Fencing team in March 2016. But, Ariana’s story is even more amazing than the number of titles she has won at such a young age. After a sports injury to her shoulder in 2015, she was determined to learn how to fence with her left hand, but thanks to multiple doctor visits and a proper rest period, she was able to get back on the mat. In fact, within a few months of the injury, she won the Youth 14 Women’s Epee at the Kansas City NAC, and then made her way to the top 22 in the Division 1 NAC to qualify for the Division Championships. She finished in the top 8 at the St. Louis NAC in the Junior Women’s Epee division that year. Ariana trains 20 hours a week at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) and Atlantic Fencing Academy (Tinton Falls) with her coach, Olympian James Carpenter, and her strip coach,

Donna Stone, a three-time U.S. National Epee Champion and three-time World Cup Finalist. She also works with Ranney’s Fencing Coach Mohammed Shafaie. “I always have to tell her not to win so fast—I want her to take her time,” says Coach Shafaie. “Ariana is the best and I am so proud of her.” The scholar-athlete remains committed to her academic work as well, and her mother, Joy Vastola Mangano—who graduated from Ranney in 1978, says Ranney’s teachers have made all the difference in that regard. “There is no way that Ariana would be able to fence at this level without the support of each and every one of her Ranney teachers. They make sure she knows the material she misses and they all give her the confidence and support she needs to fence with a clear head and not worry about the stress of school. They work around her schedule, and this type of support is priceless.” Ariana is also a member of Ranney’s Upper School Chorus and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

ANIMAL ADVOCACY
Animal Protection is Neither Right nor Left, but Forward Provided by Kathleen Schatzmann NJ State Council Director | The Humane Society of the United States A couple months ago, former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, adopted a puppy from the SPCA of Texas. In a Facebook post announcing the arrival of Freddy Bush, the 43rd president advocated for adoption: “If you could use a little extra joy in your life, consider adopting a pet from an animal shelter or rescue group.” The path for co m p a s s i o n a t e Americans wasn’t always so clear. It took decades of work to normalize the notion of spay/neuter and adoption as complementary strategies to reduce euthanasia and find homes for every animal in need. Thousands of groups joined in advocating for these notions and made them not only part of the fiber of our movement, but of the nation itself. Together, we’ve won the battle of ideas when it comes to the treatment of companion animals. Now it’s a matter of execution, continuing to deliver the message, and getting services to the people who can and want to act to affirm the human-animal bond. But, as every animal advocate knows, there’s more to animal protection than the important
notions of adoption and spay-and-neuter and access to pet care. There’s the matter of protecting all animals from cruelty, everywhere. There are numerous examples of such bipartisan work for animal welfare, and NJ, as always, is leading the way. At the federal level, Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ-4) and Earl Blumenauer (DOR-3) sent an animal welfare funding letter to their colleagues to support adequate funding for the USDA’s animal welfare and veterinary programs. At the state level, Senators Jeff Van Drew (D-1) and James Holzapfel (R-10) are the prime sponsors of a bill establishing requirements for the necessary care of dogs, domestic companion animals, and service animals. We should all expect that both Democrats and Republicans favor animal protection. Just as we worked so hard to normalize the notions of adoption of homeless animals and widespread spay-and-neuter as a basic responsibility of pet owners, we want to universalize broader notions about animal protection.
Calling All Dogs and Their People! Here’s the scoop! Join over 2,000 people and their pets for Monmouth County SPCA’s annual Dog Walk & Pet Fair to be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Brookdale Community College, located at 765 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft, for a celebration of 23 years of paws walking for a cause! All dogs WALKING OR NOT must be registered in order to attend. Those attending with a dog must raise a minimum of $25 in pledges or pay a $30 admission fee at the door. Nuts for mutts but don’t have one? You can still join in on the fun and support the biggest fundraiser of the year! Walk as little or as much as you’d like. It’s not about how many miles you log, but the impact you’ll have on the lives of thousands of homeless animals throughout Monmouth County. This year's event features new and exciting activities for people and their pets shopping for everyone with vendors, rescue groups and pet info booths, live music by The Wag, Canine PUPtuals Wedding Chapel, games and activities for kids, a cutest tricks contest, 50/50 raffle (last year’s winner took home over $18,000), dog agility ring and police canine demonstrations, MCSPCA Alumni Parade, onsite MCSPCA adoptions and microchip clinic, and gourmet food trucks and refreshments. COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
It boils down to these fundamental principles:
Our nation should never tolerate cruelty, even if it’s conducted by big industries or in the most rural states. All animals deserve humane treatment, including animals raised for food. We must embrace alternatives to animal exploitation where they exist. Hurting animals runs against our religious values and our legal traditions. Reducing cruelty and punishing perpetrators of cruelty reduces violence and builds a civil society. Our cause is a non-partisan one, and that’s as it should be. Have you ever wondered what happens when you try Botox and Juvéderm & how they work? ®
®
We’ve all heard from a friend about how she’s used Botox® and Juvéderm® to correct signs of aging on her face. We know she looks great. But, is it safe and will it be effective for our own personal concerns?
Here’s the Skinny… Botox® and Juvéderm® are two completely different things used for several different reasons. And, everyone’s treatment areas depend upon their individual signs of aging. This is why it’s very important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your specific concerns and how best to address them.
Furthermore, this helps from creating deeper and new wrinkles. Botox® doesn’t travel. It stays where you put it and cosmetic doses are so small they wouldn’t be harmful. Botox® doesn’t make you numb, you retain full feeling and it lasts about four months before it’s broken down into amino acids and naturally flushed from the body.
Botox® was FDA-approved in 2002 to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. However, Botox® is commonly used to improve crow’s feet lines along the outside of the eyes, for treating migraines, muscle disorders, excessive sweating, along with many other applications.
Juvéderm® received FDA-approval in 2006. It’s a gel that is made of cross-linked hyaluronic acid particles. Your skin naturally produces hyaluronic acid which delivers and maintains moisture and nutrients in the skin. This is what created the volume and smoothness we had when we were young but lost as we aged. Juvéderm® replenishes the lost hyaluronic to safely plump fine lines, wrinkles, sunken facial areas and lips for up to one year.
Botox®, is a neurotoxin produced from a bacteria. In the 80’s, it was discovered that Botox® could stop ailments like uncontrollable blinking and lazy eye. So, it was a natural jump that people began using it for cosmetic purposes.
Botox® comes in powder form and is diluted with saline so it can be injected. Once injected, it attaches itself to nerve endings, thereby blocking signals from the brain telling the muscle to contract. Because the muscle can’t contract, the wrinkles relax and soften.
Juvéderm® is a filler intended for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. It’s primarily used for nasolabial folds often referred to as smile lines, for injection into the lips for augmentation and around the lips to address lipstick and marionette lines.

Holmdel Hornets Finish a Perfect Season The Holmdel Hornets clinched the championship of the Boys 8 MidMonmouth Travel basketball league with a win over Tinton Falls, 1915. Led by Coach Scott Cannon, the Holmdel Hornets 3rd Grade team finished with a perfect 20-0 season. Holmdel faced very tough teams through this championship against Shrewsbury, Fair Haven, West Long Branch and Tinton Falls. The Mid-Monmouth League consists of 24 teams between two divisions which meet in the Playoff Championships.
While the Mid-Monmouth league season started on January 8, 2017, the 3rd Grade Boys Holmdel team also swept the WLB Thanksgiving Tournament at Monmouth University and Holiday HoopFest Tournament at Brookdale Community College late in 2016. This represents the first competitive travel basketball season for these Holmdel boys. “My heart is full and so happy to share in these life memories these boys have created, says Coach Cannon in reaction to the final win.
This season reinforces the commitment and dedication to competitive basketball in Holmdel. Holmdel looks to keep this streak going for years to come. For more information on Holmdel Basketball, contact Coach Scott Cannon at 908.461.8946.

Jeopardy style academic competition on March 10, 2017 at its M.A.S.T. campus on Sandy Hook.
Congratulations to Team 7 team members (all 7th graders): Aarya Doshi (Hazlet), Maria Giannakopoulos (Colts Neck), Molly Jain (Red Bank), Alex Mitchell (Red Bank), and Elizabeth Wright (Fair Haven), and coached by Mrs. Rita Cotterell.
The competition consisted of a round robin preliminary round of eight groups of four teams (with four team members competing) in a competition. After the first three rounds were completed, the total scores of the three rounds were totaled to create the seeding for the final rounds. After this result, Oak Hill Acadmey occupied the second and third seeds overall! Unfortunately, this meant it was an Oak Hill 7 vs. Oak Hill 4 semi-final.
Congratulations to Team 4 team members (all 8th graders): Nicholas Geissler (Middletown), Sydney Yan (Holmdel), Mason Garber (Colts Neck), Kushal Bhattacharyya (Marlboro), and Elizabeth Lee (Marlboro), and coached by Miss Murray and Mr. Pacelli.
In its semi-final, Team 7 (#2 seed) defeated their fellow Mustang counterparts, Team 4 (#3 seed). It was on to the finals versus Eisenhower 1, the #1 overall seed. It was a very challenging final round, but when it was all said and done, Oak Hill 7 lost to a very tough and seasoned Eisenhower team to finish in secnd place with the entire team returning next year! In the consolation round Oak Hill 4 dominated Forrestdale 4 by the score of 1040 to 240 and earned third place. Rounding out the Top 10 teams, Oak Hill 1 captured sixth; Oak Hill 8 secured ninth place and Oak Hill 3 took home tenth!
The Red Bank Catholic Girls Basketball team captured the NJSIAA Non-Public A State title by defeating Immaculate Heart Academy 55-41 on March 11, 2017 at Pine Belt Arena in Toms River. The Caseys were led by junior Katie Rice, who scored 18 points. The team is led by seniors Josie Larkins, Tia Montagne, Maureen Coakley, and Annetta Panayides.

Lincroft PTA held their first-ever Father, Daughter Dance on February 24, 2017 in the cafeteria at Middletown High School South. Due to the large turnout of over 300 people, the event had to be relocated from Lincroft School’s Leopards Den to the high school, noted event chair Sheila Vargas Makrinos. As the mother of nine-year-old twin daughters in third grade, Makrinos said it was a pleasure to organize this event for the PTA.
The theme of the dance was Valentine’s Day and fun was the focus of the evening. Makrinos said that all 221 girls from Kindergarten to fifth grade, ages five to eleven, were invited. There were 168 girls who attended with their special person – a Dad, Grandfather, Uncle or big Brother. “Some dads, like my husband, came with two daughters,” Makrinos noted.
Makrinos added, “We are looking forward to planning our Father, Daughter Dance for next year and we will try to make it even better.” She offered special thanks to the PTA Board for their help as well as the moms who assisted in setting up, decorating, helping throughout the dance, and in the end cleaning up. “I couldn’t have done this event without everyone’s help.”

LINCROFT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CREATES “A PATH THROUGH THE WILDERNESS” LENTEN LABYRINTH Lincroft Presbyterian Church (LPC) has created a Lenten Labyrinth for its “Path Through the Wilderness” sermon series that culminates on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017. The community is invited to walk the Labyrinth, located at 270 Everett Road at the corner of West Front Street in Lincroft, Mondays through Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through April 23, 2017. “Unlike a maze, one cannot get lost in a labyrinth. As we walk the path, at times it seems we are nearing the center, when suddenly the path turns a corner and we end up on the far edges. It provides an allegory for the “wilderness” of life, with the Good News that Easter proclaims: no division, no sin, and not even death can take us out of God’s hands,” notes LPC Pastor Diane Ford. Lincroft Presbyterian Church, a family-style congregation, offers a hands-on Children’s Sunday School program, Youth Group, weekly Adult Discussion, Women’s Bible Study & Weekend Retreat, a Men’s Group, an active choir and more. The church is located at the corner of Everett Corner and West Front Street in Lincroft. For more information, call 732.741.8921 or visit www. lincroftpc.org. 64

Who is the Holmdel Republican Organization? In response to the Holmdel Republican Organization’s January 5 message to residents, we have lived in Holmdel for 14 years and never heard of this organization. Why hide behind a fake organization to imply that former Mayor Hinds is not a MAN OF HIS WORD? To that statement, we disagree strongly and suggest that whoever wrote to the Editor, review the many accomplishments former Mayor Hinds has achieved so far. The Lincroft Village Green Association is hosting its 13th Annual Community Yard Sale on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 8 am to 3 pm at homes across Lincroft. Yearly membership in the LVGA is $25 per family, per year. Participation in the yard sale is free to LVGA members, and we will advertise the sale for you! FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO WWW.LINCROFTVILLAGEGREEN.COM
We raised him to be true to his promises and he is a MAN OF HIS WORD! When Eric found out mothers and their children were homeless in Monmouth County and sleeping in their cars, he wanted to do something, and founded with friends “Hope for Children Foundation”, which to this day has raised 2.5 million to help, first the homeless and now families of children with cancer and childhood diseases. After the Bell Labs Building was left empty for many years, he had the inspiration and led the way to reopen it. Through very hard work and determination he made it happen. It is now Bell Works. Mayor Hinds also secured the million-dollar donation for the library in Bell Works and announced it in his November 2016 newsletter but was never mentioned when the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor had their picture taken holding the check during the ceremony at Bell Works.
Dog Fever
66
Mayor Hinds created many new programs in Holmdel, such as Career Day, Clean-up Day, and the Job Fair for college students. He volunteers as a coach in several sports as he truly loves this town and contrary to what is said in another publication is not doing it for a political agenda.
jewelry mirrors the unique bond and great love affair with man’s best friend.
These are the reasons why Eric was voted Holmdel’s “Public Servant of the Year” in 2011 for his volunteer and charity work and was honored by the Arc of Monmouth also in 2012 for his charity work.
A relationship of deep affection, loyalty, companionship and unconditional love is perfectly reflected in the Dog Fever collection. Each piece will become a treasured souvenir reflecting the unique bond between you and your dog.
Mayor Hinds has also worked very hard to halt JCP&L’s Proposed Monmouth County Reliability Project. Eric won his reelection in a landslide thanks to the residents who clearly recognized his dedication to the town.
All jewelry is made from 925 sterling silver and is designed and handcrafted in Milan, Italy.
Many, including us are disappointed by the decision of this Holmdel Township Committee who did not even give him a leadership position as a Committeeman. Social Media exploded after that decision because the will of the residents of Holmdel was completely ignored.
Available Now at J. Vincent Jewelers Located at 420 Route 34 in Colts Neck www.jvincent.com | 732.256.4410
It is obvious that this Committee does not recognize hard work and dedication.
