PAYING TRIBUTE May is synonymous for Memorial Day Weekend (MDW), we all look forward to it, it has become our unofficial kick-off to the summer. To many people, this is a three-day weekend of relaxation and barbecues with family and friends, but let’s not forget the true meaning of this federal holiday. On Monday, May 29th, we will commemorate our U.S. soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. This is a reminder that our freedom, is in fact, not free. I would like to thank all our military service members, who have dedicated their lives for our freedom and who have kept us safe at home. We truly are in debt to your selfless service to us and our great nation.

Enjoy our May issue!

‘MADE IN MONMOUTH’ WAS A MAMMOTH SUCCESS

HFEE to Host 3rd Annual Run/Walk at Bell Works

6th expo highlighted locally-made products

Join the Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence

(HFEE) for its 3rd annual 5K Walk/Run and Kids' Fun Run on June 4, 2017 at the historic Bell Works in the heart of Holmdel. This year's race is sure to be another fun community event and will help raise money to fund the revolutionary Music Innovation Lab to be located in Satz School. Only runners and walkers registered by May 20, 2017 will get a race shirt, so be sure to register early!

There is plenty of free parking; plan to arrive early to allow

time for traffic and registration. If you have any questions about this race, contact the race director at HFEE5k@gmail. Left to right: Freeholder Serena DiMaso, Freeholder-Deputy Director John P. Curley, Freeholder-Director Lillian G. Burry, Freeholder Tom Arnone and Monmouth University President Grey J. Dimenna.

The sixth annual ‘Made In Monmouth’ expo was a colossal success for 260 vendors who displayed and sold their locallymade products to thousands of shoppers at the OceanFirst Bank Center at Monmouth University in early April. “An enormous thank you to the more than 5,000 shoppers who sampled and purchased quality goods and products from Monmouth County vendors and business,” said Freeholder Tom Arnone, liaison to the County’s Division of Economic Development. “‘Made in Monmouth’ continues to grow in vendors offerings and shopping participation. The number of merchants has increased because we continue to use all the floor space available to give vendors a chance to participate. Everyone enjoyed the day whether they were buying or selling.” Products showcased at the expo included jewelry, furniture, flowers, wine, natural foods, books, handmade glass, cosmetics, flags, chocolates, tea, woodwork and much more. “This event is a chance to promote our local economy which gives businesses the incentive to keep expanding and creating jobs,” explained Arnone. “‘Made in Monmouth’ is a perfect setting that builds awareness of the excellent products offered by companies in our County.” “If you are interested in shopping locally, be sure to download the MIM directory,” said Arnone. “All of the vendors are listed along with product descriptions, photos and contact information.” The link to the directory is co.monmouth.nj.us/page. aspx?ID=3979. Made in Monmouth is organized by the Grow Monmouth team within the County’s Division of Economic Development. Grow Monmouth officials meet regularly with business, civic and government leaders to provide state-of-the-art information services. It has become a major public-private project to create and preserve jobs in Monmouth County.

Newcomers and Neighbors Club to hold Spring Luncheon

The Newcomers and Neighbors Club will hold its spring

luncheon on May 11, 2017 at Buona Sera in Red Bank. Festivities will begin at 12:00 noon with a cocktail hour followed by a five course meal. Entertainment will be provided by numerologist Michael Fierro. For a reservation, call 732.343.3586. Cost per ticket is $55.

The luncheon is the last major event of the year. General

meetings will resume in September 2017. However, many of the activity groups continue to meet through June, taking only two months break in the summer.

The Newcomers and Neighbors Club was founded in 1971

by Colts Neck resident Louise Martorana. Louise held the first meetings in her kitchen, but meetings soon became quite popular, and the turnout was so large that they had to be moved to the Presbyterian Church. Since then, the meetings have been held in many different venues and are now held at the Conover Road Firehouse #2.

If you are interested in educational activities, reading and

discussion groups, social activities which include partners and spouses, trips to theaters and museums, evening activities, cooking groups and above all, meeting and enjoying new people, this is the club for you. For information about the Newcomers and Neighbors Club, call 732.577.0875 or 732.530.9543.

Raised Over $90,000 for 180 Turning Lives Around, Inc. & Reached the $1 Million Mark in Total Funds Raised For Local Charities

The Salt Creek Grille’s 14th Annual

Wine & Martini Tasting Fundraiser held on April 6 raised over $90,000 in funds for 180 Turning Lives Around, Inc., a not-forprofit organization providing services to individuals and their families affected by domestic violence. Salt Creek Grille also reached its $1 million mark in total funds raised for local charities through the annual event which began in 2004 to celebrate the restaurant’s 5th anniversary.

“One restaurant, one million dollars in

donated funds to our local charities!” said Steve Bidgood, co-owner Salt Creek Grille and well-known local philanthropist. “We are happy to help! And I thank my vendors, the sponsors, friends and employees who Ed and Eileen Sullivan, Allied Beverage - Photo credit: Karen J Irvine

helped make this possible! Salt Creek has supported dozens of charities with missions supporting children’s needs. This event will support 180’s children’s art therapy program, Amanda’s Easel. We commend the work 180 is doing to help victims and their children cope with the trauma caused by domestic violence and we are happy to do our part to support the organization’s great work.” and

I have a new optometrist – so what’s that got to do with life

you may ask? A lot but I’ll let you be the judge.

Because I’ve never worn glasses… until I hit the wall at

45, (and even still I wear “cheaters” as I suppose I’m in some denial of old age), I only visit the optometrist every few years. When he announced to me that he was retiring to Florida, he referred me to a new guy, who I didn’t like or dislike since I had only ever seen him occasionally – so for the time being I decided to stay with him even though he’d recently moved to a new high-end fancy office further from home. Once when I was in to see him, without any explanation an assistant did a few quick new tests, after which I was kept waiting for over a half hour. When the optometrist finally “knocked” and walked

When I started to ask specific questions he got up and brushed me off with, “I’ll give you a referral and Dr. X will tell you all about it.” Upon leaving I was presented I questioned it (which I’ve learned nowadays to do) – I was informed, with a procedural/rehearsed answer, that it was the

I was less than happy in addition to feeling uninformed.

Not two weeks later upon hearing my story, a friend

recommended an optometrist – he said he “loved him.” I was skeptical because I had to pay for a visit again since my insurance only covers one examination per year (I’m pretty information and closure on this cataracts thing. I showed up for my 10 o’clock appointment and was seen in at 10:03. The offices were not as chichi but certainly clean and the equipment was simple and state-of-the-art. The optometrist

to him with all the paper work so “we” could make a final decision. He gave me his cell number and his email address and invited me to call if I had any questions. I was charged $75 and would happily have paid twice as much (theoretically anyway). This didn’t seem like a man desperate for new clients. So why did he bother? – I actually asked him. He said three things – “I love what I do, I like to service local clientele,

the one I will tell all my friends and clients about? Do you see where I’m going with this? One of the psychologies I see as a financial advisor, managing money and future-proofing families, is that if you want your personal and business relationships to be “forever”, just being competent and getting “decent returns on investment” both with portfolios and relationships isn’t enough – you need to go deeper! Calling All Owners of Historic Holmdel Homes for Annual Historic House Tour The organizers of the second annual Historic Holmdel House Tour are putting out the call early for owners of historic homes and other historical properties in Holmdel who would like to showcase their property in this year’s guided tour. Scheduled for December 2, 2017, the Historic Holmdel House Tour gives those from around the area, as well as visitors from out of state, the unique chance to revel in the delight of antiquated homes and other private old landmarks, on an intimate tour throughout one of the oldest sites of European settlement in the Garden State dating back to the 1600s. Last year’s inaugural tour kicked off with such significant historical properties as the 300-plus year-old private Georgian-Federalist style residence, the Samuel Ogbourne House; the Kouvenhoven House, built in 1699; Dr Robert Woodruff Cooke’s medical office; and the Holmdel Communiy United Church of Christ, built in 1705. Holmdel residents looking to open up their own historical homes for this special Christmastime guided tour can reach out directly to Holmdel Historical Society Vice President Sylvia Allen at

Prepare for another great season of top-quality, independent cinema in Monmouth County! Last December, Monmouth Film Festival (MFF) made its mark during its inaugural event at the Two River Theater in Red Bank - attracting audiences from across the tri-state area; receiving rave reviews and top ratings. Film critic Joan Ellis of the Two River Times wrote, “The production quality, scripting, and acting of all the films was extremely high and the subject matter was refreshingly original”. “What an amazing firstyear event this festival is. Everything was done first class with entertainment in mind,” commented Associate Director of the NJ Film Commission, David Schoner. The Festival and its programming team search endlessly to find the hidden gems amongst the film industry. As the President of the company states, “There are no favorites, no special treatments, and no ‘good old boys club’. Every film gets the same fair opportunity to be chosen.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I grew up in a town in New York called Brooklyn, bearing the name of Carmine Salvatore Visone. On Sundays you didn’t ask if you were going to church; you got ready and went. I couldn’t even give an excuse, or complain that it was snowing or raining too hard, because I lived right next door to the church. I could actually hear the organ music in my bedroom. It was a time when everyone treated each other like Family. We went outside to play, we got dirty, we bought chips and candy from the corner store. We played Red Light/Green Light, Kick the Can, Simon Says, Hide and Seek, Dodge Ball, Red Rover, Baseball, Stickball, Softball, and Football. I even played handball, and skully with the nuns who were my neighbors and friends… and who beat me at those games every single time. We could ride our bikes to the store, or the park, and stay all day. We ate beans and hot dogs, mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and my mom made pasta almost every night even though she would say pasta fagioli, lentils and pasta, or soup with noddles wasn’t really pasta. The real pasta was on Sundays, and Fridays was always pizza or fried fish. We walked or rode a bike everywhere, and never worried about safety. We never thought to lock our windows or doors at night. We had chores to do around the house, we helped clean off the table after a meal, and ate our meals as a family at a table together. Every single Sunday I ate with my grandparents, and all my aunts, uncles, and cousins, which was a tradition that we even follow now today. We weren’t AFRAID OF ANYTHING except our parents. If you fell down you would just get back up. We shared immense love for our entire family. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents were all one. We always shared love, laughter, and our faith. On Christmas Eve my grandfather would make us all stay awake to midnight, not to hear Santa’s bells, but to have every single person

kiss baby Jesus as he slowly placed him in the beautiful manger that sat on the mantle in the living room every year. We respected our parents, our teachers (and especially our neighbors who we called by their proper names, and who acted as our guardians in our parents' absence), the American flag, the principal, AND God. We said the Pledge of Allegiance every time we went to school. We left our houses as soon as we could in the morning and right after school till our neighbors would yell out for their children as a reminder to get in the house for the night. If one kid was called for dinner then we all knew to go home. We watched our mouths around our elders because we knew if we DISRESPECTED any adult there would be a price to pay. We had manners and respect; otherwise someone else’s parents put you in your place. I would not trade anything for the childhood we had for we had enough, and we had love, and all that made us the adults we are today. It’s these traditions and values that we carry forward in our lives today. It is these traditions and family values that we bring to our children, our grandchildren, and hopefully our great grandchildren. As a family together we use no cell phones, no texting, no computer games. We talk, we laugh, and every Sunday after church we sit for dinner, and share our lives. This is our definition of family. This is our most precious gift.

“Lincroft Eats” Food Truck Fest will be a Feast of Food and Fun for All What better way to kick off Father’s Day weekend than to go to a Food Truck Fest? The Lincroft Village Green Association (LVGA) is hosting its 2nd Annual “Lincroft Eats” Food Truck Festival at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. The fundraising event will be held Friday, June 16, 2017 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will have popular food trucks, craft vendors, live music, kids’ activities and a classic car show. Admission is $5 for adults and children 12 and under are free. The gourmet food truck line-up is sure to please palates of any age. Whether one craves a juicy burger, savory empanada, smoothie bowls, fresh seafood, specialty coffee and more there is sure to be any foodies’ favorite on the menu. What’s a festival without live music? The LVGA has a great mix of musicians taking the stage this June. Opening the show at 3:00 p.m. will be NYC-based Martin Rivas, who has cut six albums and traveled the world sharing his modern folk sound on stages in the United States, the UK, Ireland, and continental Europe. Performing at 4:00 p.m. is local band Kat Phunk, a band of three teenage musicians, (including Lincroft’s very own Sean Moran on keyboard). New to the music scene is DUB, a bluegrass band made up of members of the medical community, who will be opening for the headliner band of the evening, Not-On-Call. The LVGA is thrilled that Not-On-Call band members are taking a break from their busy schedules as doctors and nurses for an encore appearance.

Another highlight of the event is the Classic Car Show. Classic car owners who want to show their “pride and joy” and vie for a trophy can find the registration form at lincroftvillagegreen.org. The participants in the Classic Car Show will vote on the classic cars in six classes, based on both the year built (1992 and prior) and the category of foreign or domestic made. Space is limited to 130 cars so early registration is encouraged. The LVGA appreciates the support of its generous trophy sponsors that are featured on its website. The LVGA is accepting applications for art and craft vendors and plans to again have a variety of craft tents fill the large, open area of the Brookdale campus. If you or someone you know make unique, hand-crafted items this is a perfect venue to sell your wares! Local business owners are also invited to have a Business Information Booth. This is an opportunity to showcase your business. The cost for a craft or business booth is $40; applications can be found on the website. Business sponsorships and proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit an irrigation and beautification project at the Lincroft Village Green, free community events at the Green, and the LVGA Community Scholarships. Business owners and community members who are interested in supporting the fundraising effort can provide sponsorship at levels starting at $50. Be sure to bring your beach chair and blankets and relax. No outside food or beverage is allowed; no coolers please. Brookdale is a smoke-free and alcohol-free college campus.

Local Students Win at Garden State Film Festival Communications High School students Emily McNeill of Colts Neck and Kera McGovern of Tinton Falls, both sophomores, co-directed a short film that was selected, screened and given an award at the Garden State Film Festival in Atlantic City. The category their film was entered and awarded for was “Home Grown Student Documentary Short, High School”. Both Emily and Kera staged each shot, selected the location, prepared each of the questions and edited the film's audio and video. This film was created as an assignment for their high schools “DV” (Digital Video) club. The hunt will be led by a fossil expert from Poricy Park. We will meet at the Village School parking lot at 10:00 a.m. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet, and bring strainers for sifting. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and the event will be held rain or shine. For more information or questions, contact 732.671.9196 or atspang@verizon.net.

A Passport to Fun THE GARDEN STATE WINE GROWERS ASSOCIATION (GSWGA) picks two New Jersey wine lovers each year and sends them on an allexpense paid wine excursion. Last year they sent two wine lovers from Cherry Hill to the Willamette Valley in Oregon where they enjoyed a local winery during the day and spent their nights at a beautiful resort with its own vineyard. Previous winners have been sent on wine excursions in countries like Spain, Austria, Hungary, and Portugal. Wondering how you can be next? Visit the nearest winery in New Jersey and ask for a Wine Country Passport. The good news is no matter where you are in the state, you’re only ever 45 minutes away from a winery! The passport

What’s in Your Wine Cellar? NO MATTER WHAT PRICE POINT you have in mind, you are sure to find the perfect wine at Spirits Unlimited in Shrewsbury (near Trader Joe’s). Whether you are a first time visitor or a repeat client, you are in for a pleasant experience. Spirits in Shrewsbury is a family undertaking and the goals are to build strong community relationships and to offer unique wines. Frank Helmka, the owner, recently added a unique way to stay informed. Text “winespirits” to 56977 to join the Wine Club and to receive alerts about hard to find wines and special discounts. The store carries popular labels, local wines, vintages from many states, as well as wines from all over the world. Frank and store manager, Michelle Figel, also specialize in esoteric wines from smaller cult wine companies and cultivate personal relationships with the vendors. They attend wine shows and private wine tastings to constantly learn more and are always on the lookout for new, harder to find wines. Michelle has been in the business for over twenty years and impresses customers with her deep knowledge of the stock. You may see her speeding around the store, selecting wine from all different shelves to create a custom basket or fill a special order. program was created by GSWGA to encourage state residents to visit the 46 wineries on the New Jersey Wine Trail. As you visit each, you get a stamp in your passport. Once your passport is filled, and you have three years to do so once you register online, you can enter the completed passport drawing. Beyond the chance to win a fun trip, the passport serves as a pocket guide to each of the state’s wineries. Location, business hours, website, and a short history of each winery are all included. If you prefer to go high tech, you can download the Garden State Wine Growers Association Wine Trails Passport app and use it to check in to wineries when you visit.

A Long History of Wine Making in New Jersey BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, New Jersey was creating highquality wines. In 1758, Great Britain’s Royal Society sought colonists who could produce wines that were on par with those produced by France. After several years of no takers, two prominent New Jersey residents, William Alexander of Basking Ridge and Edward Antill of Piscataway, succeeded in meeting the expectations of the judges and New Jersey wines were born. Other vineyards were established, and in the late 1800s and early 1900s New Jersey wines both flourished and failed. The most notable offering was from Master Vintner Louis Nicholas Renault. Renault purchased land in Egg Harbor and by 1870 had introduced New Jersey Champagne and gave Egg Harbor the nickname ‘Wine City’. Renault winery gained notoriety despite the failure of many other vineyards. Many of the vines transplanted from Europe succumbed to insects in the late 1800s. A few decades later, Prohibition crippled the state’s remaining wineries. Even after Prohibition was repealed, strict laws kept the wine industry from growing, particularly one law that allowed only one winery license for every one million state residents. In 1980, the state had as few as seven licensed wineries. Now the Garden State has more than 50 wineries with 80 grape varieties and more than 2,000 acres dedicated to growing. The surge began when the Farm Winery Act of 1981 abolished the prior restrictive law. Changes in regulations and research that has led to sturdier hybrid grapes has jumped New Jersey to one of the top wine producing states in the nation, with 35 new wineries opening in the past fifteen years alone. Grape hybrids are hardy, productive, and disease-resistant grape vines that are produced by pollinating one plant species with the flower of another one. The new hybrid of the two varieties is often a better vine in terms of resistance to disease, yield, and quality. A significant feature of the modern New Jersey’s wine industry is its well-supported quality-assurance scheme, introduced in 1999. Open to all wines made in the state, the Quality Wine Alliance Program (QWA) is designed to promote the kind of quality that has won New Jersey wines recognition and awards in both the national and international arenas. New Jersey vintners are also known for their collaboration and willingness to work together to overcome challenges of weather and humidity. www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com MAY 2017

Something New FROM A

Long-Held Passion

With family roots that extend back more than 200 years, Casola is a well-known name in Holmdel and surrounding towns as a multi-generational farm family. Expanding the family farming business to include wine-making, Joseph Casola has opened Fox Hollow Vineyards - Monmouth County’s newest vineyard where all of the grapes are grown, harvested, and hand-tended locally. e as a family are involved in every aspect of the wine making and it’s all done by hand,” Casola says. “We grow every one of our own grapes and they become our fine wines. We hope our passion shows, and we invite folks to stop by and not only sample our wines, but sit outside and enjoy the beautiful vistas of our vineyards.” A man who loves animals and the land, as a boy Casola dreamed of having his own farm. He found growing his own vegetables and planting flowers rewarding, learning quickly that good tending resulted in abundance. But it is his love for family and bringing people together that comes through when he talks about wine-making. “I loved growing up on a farm. One of the most rewarding feelings as a child that stayed with me throughout my life was growing my own vegetables and flowers. I learned if I took good care, watered and nourished my plants, I would be rewarded with an abundance that I got to enjoy, cook with my family, and share with friends and family,” Casola says. “We had farm to table way before it became a thing. Every day my mom would cook with us with produce we grew in our home garden or from what my dad was harvesting. So growing up with all these wonderful childhood memories of the farm life, I knew that I couldn’t have an office job or commute into the City. I wanted to be outside breathing in fresh air every day.” BELOW: Frederic, a staple at Fox Hollow Vineyards.

One of five children, Casola grew up around a lot of people, family pets, and farm animals. On his parent’s farm they raised chickens, sheep, goats, pigs, cows, and horses. A visit to Fox Hollow Vineyards will often

include time with Frederic, Casola’s dog, and several rescued farm animals. “Most importantly to me growing up on a farm meant a lot of family time. We always had lots of room to play and explore. I could go to work with my dad any day I wanted to and I loved when he would plow the fields – the smell of the fresh turned over soil and playing in the cool earth with my siblings while searching for earth worms,” Casola says. “I decided that I was going to get into wine making after high school. Wine making was not something I always wanted to do. I did know I wanted to stay in agriculture and I wanted to work with my family on the farm – but I also wanted to start something new.” Casola took his love for farming and his desire to branch out in a new direction and attended Surry Community College in North Carolina. There he learned about wine making and vineyards establishment. With the help of his parents he took the land that was once Fox Hollow Farm and turned his knowledge into a working vineyard that is producing several award winning varieties. His goal is to raise the quality of wine produced in New Jersey and to compete on the international level. “I am really excited about some of the reds we grow, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and our Malbec. All of these varieties are proving to be excellent grapes for the Garden State and they have let me produce some really nice varietals, red blends, and rosé wines.” As the fifth largest consumer of wine in the nation, New Jersey consumes about three gallons per person every year. Wine making is also the fastest growing type of agriculture with more than twenty farm wineries that grow grapes and produce wine in the state. The state boasts more than fifty vineyards that grow grapes and sell them to wineries throughout the nation. “I think wine making in New Jersey has improved a lot in recent years. As more wineries have opened up, and more people have an interest in wine, there has been an increase in producing better quality wines and not just sweet fruit wines. More wineries have a focus on growing high quality grapes to produce high quality wines. We have wine associations and groups of wine makers getting together to share knowledge to improve quality,” Casola says. Humidity and unpredictable weather are two of the biggest challenges to wine making

IMPACT 100 Jersey Coast to Award Two Grants of $123,000 to Monmouth County Nonprofits At 246-women strong, Impact 100 Jersey Coast will make an even larger impact on the local community than in 2016. After awarding its inaugural $145,000 grant to 180 Turning Lives Around in 2016, Impact’s goal in its second year was to provide at least two $100,000 grants. One should never underestimate the power of women. At the culmination of the membership drive, Impact announced that it will be offering two transformational grants of $123,000 to nonprofit organizations serving Monmouth County in 2017. “We started this drive back in November of 2016 with an ambitious goal - to grow to 200 members in our second year and to double our impact by making two large-scale grants of at least $100,000 this year,” said Heather Burke, Co-founder and Vice President of Impact 100 Jersey Coast. “Impact continues to resonate with women in our community and the response was overwhelming. We surpassed our initial goal and increased last year’s membership by more than 100 women!” Started in Cincinnati in 2001 by Wendy Steele, Impact 100 was created with the idea of promoting philanthropy among women - if 100 women each donated $1,000, a grant of $100,000 could be awarded to a local nonprofit community organization. Its unique hands-on approach to giving is simple and spreading. Since its inception, Impact 100 has expanded to numerous chapters throughout the USA as well as internationally. “I think we’re at a pivotal moment in time where women across the country are uniting together to make a positive impact. For Impact Jersey Coast, money is our collective voice. We hope our grants will inspire local nonprofits to dream big and bring transformational change to our community,” added Deirdre Spiropoulos, Co-founder and President of Impact 100 Jersey

Coast. “Now the real work begins,” said Rowena CrawfordPhillips, Co-Chair of Impact’s Grant committee. “Nonprofit organizations in Monmouth County that seek funding can submit a proposal for a dream project that will extend or improve their mission. Grant applicants should focus on one of five grant categories – Arts and Culture; Children and Families; Education; Environment, Preservation or Recreation; or Health and Wellness. Focus Area Committees (FACs), comprised of members, evaluate grant applications. After a thorough analysis and financial review, semifinalists are selected and site visits are scheduled. The FACs select finalists to present at the Annual Membership Meeting in November, where each member will cast a single vote, and the two organizations with the most votes will be awarded the funds.” For more information, visit www.impact100jerseycoast.org.

Run The Hook 5k & 10k Race to Benefit Clean Ocean Action Run The Hook 5K & 10K is back at one of the Jersey Shore’s most historic locations for a race to keep our oceans wild and pollution free. Peak Projects, the company behind Run The Hook, Asbury Park Santa Run, and The Brew Hop 5K & Craft Beer Festival, are pleased to announce the 2nd annual race, taking place on May 14, 2017 at Sandy Hook National Park. The race challenges runners and walkers of all abilities to complete a 5K or 10K course in support of local charity, Clean Ocean Action, a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to restoring, improving, and protecting the water quality of New Jersey’s oceans. All runners will receive a t-shirt, finisher gift, closed scenic course in Sandy Hook National Park, chip timed results, and access to the after party with their registration. A portion of the proceeds from the race will go directly to the charity to support their work in the local community. After the race, there will be an after party nearby at a to-be-announced location to celebrate with drink specials, food, and entertainment. 100% of all fundraising efforts will go to Clean Ocean Action.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

Speaking about the event, Peak Projects co-founder, Joey Garofalo of Little Silver noted, “I’ve been supporting Clean Ocean Action since I was a kid attending their beach walks and it has always been clear that the organization places a large emphasis on community and family. With this year’s event falling on Mother’s Day, we encourage all of our supporters to come out and make the event a family outing. You can run with the kids or enjoy the scenic waterfront course with mom. Either way, celebrate Mother’s Day by supporting Mother Earth!” “All waters run to the sea, and now you can run to help keep it wild and free from pollution. Run the Hook is the perfect way to celebrate good health for you and the ocean,” said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action. “This year’s run is truly a family opportunity. Bring your Mom to walk or run and together you can make it a Mother’s Day with Mother Ocean on beautiful Sandy Hook. We are so thrilled and honored to be a beneficiary of this great event.” To register and to learn more about Run The Hook, visit runthehooknj.com.

Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Monmouth County

Freeholder Director Burry & Surrogate Peters speak on Women’s History panel In late March, Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry and County Surrogate Rosemarie Peters, Esq. joined an esteemed group of women to speak on a panel titled “Trailblazing Women – Breaking the Glass Ceiling” in honor of Women’s History Month at the Monmouth County Courthouse. “My father and husband have both played the roles of hero and mentor in my life, they have always been supportive of me,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry. “I went on to think I could do anything I want and be anything I want to be and here I am today.” Director Burry was invited to participate on the panel organized by Superior Court, Monmouth Vicinage Assignment Judge Lisa P. Thornton. Also participating on the panel were Appellate Division Judge Mary Catherine Cuff, (Ret.), Presiding Judge Patricia Del Bueno Cleary, Monmouth County Surrogate Rosemarie D. Peters, Esq., and attorney Michelline Davis. Panelists spoke about how they got their beginnings in their careers and shared their experiences with breaking the glass ceiling. Judge Thornton opened the panel as moderator by referencing a point made by the COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg, at a TED talk on why we have too few women leaders: “(Women) are not where we used to be, but not where we should be.” She believes women should fight for what they want by working with men as allies and being advocates for other women. Surrogate Rosemarie Peters spoke fondly on her career and path into politics. “Why not give it a try, lots of other people have.” After looking back on her political achievements she noted, “It was the best decision I’ve ever made. The County has been very open to women in politics.”

“Trailblazing Women – Breaking the Glass Ceiling” panelists (left to right): Appellate Division Judge Mary Catherine Cuff, (Ret.), Monmouth County Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry, Presiding Judge Patricia Del Bueno Cleary, attorney Michelline Davis, Monmouth County Surrogate Rosemarie D. Peters, Esq. and panel organizer and moderator Superior Court, Monmouth Vicinage Assignment Judge Lisa P. Thornton.

Monmouth County leadership broke the glass ceiling in 2008 when Mrs. Burry served her first term as freeholder director alongside three female elected constitutional officers: Sheriff Kim Guadagno, Surrogate Rosemarie Peters, and County Clerk M. Claire French. She spoke about how she lives her life by the philosophy of Edmund Burke, “All that’s needed for a democracy to fail is for a lot of good people to do nothing.” She believes that women have a great capacity to empathize and compromise in order to achieve a productive result. Director Burry left the audience with a strong remark, “It’s important to have that self-confidence and to always believe in yourself.”

Holmdel High School Girls Grow Greens to Give Back Healthy, organic vegetables were on the minds of four Holmdel High School students who decided that farming their own vegetables would be the best way to guarantee pesticide free produce. And most importantly, they wanted to share their crop with those in need. Thus the idea of “Girls Giving Greens” was born. In early spring 2016, the members of Girls Giving Greens - Gabrielle Cipriano, Julia Hamwi, Wallis Toscarelli, and Alexandra Vervoordt - created their garden from scratch: tearing up lawn, tilling the ground, and planting seeds. After watering and weeding the field for months, finally in late July, their crops were ready to be picked. The first box containing varieties of lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes was able to be donated to the nonprofit organization of Mary’s Place by the Sea in Ocean Grove. Mary’s Place is a retreat for women who struggle with cancer. Here they are able to enjoy a relaxing stay with provided meals and activities. This summer, “Girls Giving Greens” is excited to provide Mary’s Place and other non-profit organizations with sustainable, pesticide-free vegetables that are home grown. Anyone interested in donating their produce to Girls Growing Greens for distribution should email girlsgivinggreens@gmail.com.

Colts Neck Author’s Nine Books Teach in a New, Fun Way Dr. Janet A. Munger, known as Dr. JAM, has published nine books through Amazon to help children and adults learn and remember. While teaching primary school-age children to read, Colts Neck-resident Dr. JAM taught by singing the rules of phonics, math times tables, musical notes, history, and geography and has translated that into her books. She found the children both enjoyed themselves, grew more confidant, and had an easier time learning. “Learning takes place without even realizing that something wonderful is transpiring,” Dr. JAM says. “It has been stated that we have more knowledge today about how children learn than the knowledge we once had to land a man on the moon. The moon is within our reach if only we reach out and grab it.”

56

As a teenager, Dr. Jam enjoyed reading Shakespeare and ancient poets because of the lyrical nature of their works. When she began teaching young children she would read to them aloud each day after lunch and realized the rhyming verse of children’s literature would hold them spellbound. Combining her enjoyment of lyricism with the rules of phonics and the sounds of the English language, she began writing stories about historical travel and journeys through world events. Dr. JAM has more than forty years of experience in education as a teacher, supervisor, principal, superintendent, and as a curriculum and instruction director. To make her books more accessible to non-profit organizations, she offers special pricing to schools, churches, libraries, hospitals, and charitable organizations. At the May 12-14 Nationals, Ranney will take on 19 other schools from across the country. Congratulations to Coach Clay

Animal Advocacy

PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN

The SAFE Act: Defunding Horse Slaughter

NJ STATE COUNCIL DIRECTOR | THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES

This month, Congress will have the opportunity to vote on an amendment to defund horse slaughter from the federal budget.

(SAFE) Act, H.R. 113, was introduced in January of 2017by Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Ed Royce (R-Calif.), and Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.). A Senate bill is expected soon.

The provision will stop the Department of Agriculture from spending money on inspections necessary for slaughterhouses to export horsemeat to overseas consumers. These facilities have not existed in the United States since 2007, because Congress has supported an amendment that removes taxpayer dollars from inspecting the horsemeat that these businesses would produce. Without inspections, the meat cannot be sold.

Approximately 100,000 American horses are shipped to Canada and Mexico each year to be slaughtered for human consumption in foreign countries. The animals often suffer long journeys to slaughter plants without adequate food, water or rest. At the slaughterhouse, horses are brutally forced into a “kill box” and shot in the head with a captive bolt gun or rifle in an attempt to stun them before slaughter—a process that can be inaccurate due to the biology and fight or flight nature of equines.

Our state has been ahead on this issue since 2012, when it became illegal to knowingly slaughter a horse for human consumption, transport a horse for the purpose of slaughter for human consumption, or to knowingly transport horse meat, or any product made in whole or in part from the flesh of a horse, for the purpose of human consumption. Federal lawmakers have also introduced legislation to prevent the establishment of horse slaughter operations within the U.S., end the current export of American horses for slaughter abroad, and protect the public from consuming toxic horse meat. The Safeguard American Food Exports

The SAFE Act would also protect consumers from dangerous American horse meat, which can be toxic to humans due to the unregulated administration of drugs to horses. Horses are not raised for food, and they are routinely given hundreds of toxic drugs and chemical treatments over their lifetimes that are potentially toxic to humans if consumed – and many of which are prohibited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in animals intended for human consumption. At a time when Congress is so focused on fiscal responsibility and the budget of the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service is already stretched thin, the USDA should not extend taxpayer funding for a new program to slaughter horses when the majority of Americans oppose the practice. COLTS NECK COMMUNITY BAND ANNOUNCES UPCOMING SHOWS The Colts Neck Community Band is a top-notch concert band comprised of musicians who share a strong commitment to quality musical performance and provide a supportive community among the membership. As the conductors of the group often say, this ensemble “puts the community in community band.” The band is proud to take the stage on the following dates: Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at Colts Neck High School, Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Park in Lincroft, and Monday, July 3, 2017 performing for the fireworks and celebration at the Bucks Mill Recreation Area in Colts Neck. Please mark your calendar so as not to miss these upcoming performances. Included in this spring’s Colts Neck Community Band concert series will be a wide variety of music to connect with listeners of all kinds. Classical music fans will be treated to the Finale from Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor as well as Schubert’s “Ave Maria.” A contemporary piece in the spring repertoire is John Barnes Chance’s Incantation and Dance, which includes inventive rhythms and powerful percussion features. Listeners will enjoy two of Sousa’s lesser-known marches: Easter Monday on the White House Lawn and The Black Horse Troop. The light style and playful orchestration of the Easter Monday march is used to evoke the cheerful and celebratory atmosphere created by the Easter egg roll traditionally completed by toddlers every year on the day after Easter. In contrast, Sousa’s The Black Horse Troop conjures the traditional military sounds of a march, and while not as well-known as some of his other marches, it is considered by many to be a gem. Come to the concert and tap your feet as you enjoy a tribute to Benny Goodman, “The King of Swing” and Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, as well as highlights from Porgy and Bess. Moviegoers are sure to enjoy the triumphant melodies in the highlights from the Jurassic Park soundtrack, written by John Williams. Also among the pieces to be performed will be a whimsical tuba and piccolo duet entitled “The Elephant and the Fly.” The Colts Neck Community Band spring performances will feature two outstanding vocal soloists. David J. Crosby, a former member of the band, and Andrea Riemen, a current member of the flute section of the band will delight the audience with their vocal talents. Mr. Crosby currently resides in Old Bridge, where he is the music director for the Two Counties Symphonic Band and the associate music director for the Old Bridge Concert Band. He is a vocalist and conductor who studied at Montclair State University and plays the euphonium and tuba as well. Ms. Riemen is a general music teacher in Middletown, an adjunct professor of music at Brookdale Community College, the musical director at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Matawan, and a vocalist in the Moondance Big Band in Colts Neck. She earned her degrees from Rutgers University and Montclair State University. All performances are free; donations are always appreciated. Named after founder Richard Frankle, Franklesdream, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that accepts donations and helps provide financial support to the band. Please learn more about the Colts Neck Community Band by visiting www.coltsneckband.org and liking the Colts Neck Community Band on Facebook.

OAK HILL 7TH GRADER COMES IN 3RD IN STATE AT NJ NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE At Rowan University on March 31, 2017, 102 students who qualified for the New Jersey National Geographic Bee came together for the 29th annual NJ State Competition, which is open to 4th through 8th graders. Around three million students in almost 10,000 schools across the country participated in their school bees and took the qualifying test to participate in the state competition, but only a few thousand made it to the state level. In fact, New Jersey is one of the most competitive states in the country with many more entrants from here. Oak Hill Academy seventh grader, Alex Mitchell, was one of 22 students who made it to the tie breaker round with perfect scores. He then qualified for the final round, and competed strongly, finishing third in the state. Alex received prizes and a National Geographic Book for his efforts and achievement.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALEX!

The performance will be held Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. at The Henderson Theatre on the Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) campus in Lincroft. Ladies Auxiliary Holds Firehouse Fundraiser

On March 31, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lincroft Fire Department sponsored a Fun Night at the Firehouse Fundraiser event. Men and women attended, making the number of guests 48 in all. Upon entering the game room, stickers were distributed to each player and those who had the sticker that was randomly pulled won a prize. Winners were able to choose their prize from the pile of 200+ wrapped items. Multiple winners per sticker were selected. The three-hour event also included card games with many winners per game. Another exciting part of the evening was the raffling of 30 baskets. All of the items were donated by local vendors such as Attilio Restaurant & Pizzeria, www. whatnotzllc.com, Aleo Italian Specialties, and friends of the fire house. There was a 50/50 raffle and the winning player Ryan Clark generously donated the whole amount back to the firehouse. At the end of the evening, anyone who did not win a prize was allowed to select one, and each attendee was happy to win at least once during the event. Although there was no admittance fee to this fundraiser, those who attended made their own donation by stuffing cash into a firemen’s boot on display. The monies collected were donated to the fire department to be used for fire truck tools, firemen’s protective gear, and other items as needed. The current Board members of the Ladies Auxiliary are President Aimee Russo; Vice President Bridget Matthews; Treasurer Gayle McKnight; Correspondence Secretary Mary Jean Kelly; and Recording Secretary Kerri Doherty. President Aimee Russo shared at the end of the evening, “Thank you to all who attended. The support from the community is greatly appreciated. The Ladies Auxiliary helps to support the firemen that respond when needed in our own community.”
