INTO THE WOODS

May is chock full of interesting “days”. For instance, May 4 is Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you), May 11 is National Eat What You Want Day, and May 19 is National Devil’s Food Cake Day. Chocolate chips are celebrated on the 15th, Mimosas on the 16th, and May 25 pays homage to the fruit of the vine with National Wine Day. But in between all that fun, there are two very special days we all can say have had an impact on our lives – Mother’s Day on May 12 and Memorial Day, formally known as Decoration Day, on May 27. Our cover story is about a mom who went through a terrible ordeal and has come out the other side trying to make a difference for others facing similar pains. On page 46 you’ll meet Donna Ongsiako who survived an attack in her home. She now spends her time helping other crime victims. We wanted to bring you, our readers, this important and sobering story in observance of May being Mental Health Awareness Month. In our pages this month we are focused on area nonprofits, various events, and lots of pictures of local faces. We bring you updates from the New Jersey Hall of Fame as well as some exciting expansions and changes to local landmarks and schools. We know local matters, and with all that’s been going on in our beautiful Monmouth County, we at CM are dedicated to keeping you in the know. As we greet the unofficial start of summer, and remember to honor those who gave their lives for our freedom through their service in our military, I wish you all a happy May.

HOLMDEL RECREATION HOSTED INAUGURAL EGG HUNT PHOTOS: C ATH Y PA DILL A

On April 18, Holmdel Recreation hosted its inaugural Flashlight Egg Hunt at Cross Farm Park. Hundreds of children and their families came out for a fun night of music and dancing from DJ Menson of Kidz Klub Parties, face painting by Holmdel High School Alum Anita Nicosia, a giant bouncy castle, and visits with the Easter Bunny, Andy the Armadillo from Holmdel’s Texas Roadhouse, and Officer Friendly and McGruff, the Crime Dog from the Holmdel Township Police Department.

SPRING AT HOLMDEL LIBRARY If you haven’t seen Bell Works in the spring, that alone is worth the ride to the library! The view from the Holmdel Library windows is breathtaking and serene with the trees in bloom. Perhaps that is part of the reason that the Holmdel branch has been voted the best place in Monmouth County to study. The Holmdel Library is offering a number of varied programs this month. The story times for children continue throughout the month on Mondays and Thursdays, please

call for times and ages. For adults, the Holmdel Library has two wonderful programs planned. On May 8, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, there is a Belly Dance class! If you’ve been wanting to try belly dance, now is your chance. Join instructor Evandne Sarai and learn the basics of this ancient dance. No experience required and all shapes and sizes are welcome. The Library is excited to welcome Holmdel local and author Phyllis Ameduri, as she discusses her new novel, Never Ruled by Man. She

tells the real-life story of Mary Ann Bascombe, a unique and eccentric who lived in 19th century Stapleton, NY. Born to the working class, orphaned at 12 and forced to work as a housemaid, she went on to great success as a lay lawyer, businesswoman, activist and politician. Holmdel Library is located at 101 Crawfords Corner Road, Suite 2110 in Bell Works in Holmdel and can be reached at 732.946.4118. All programs are free and open to the public.

WELCOME TO THE TABLE

The Price of Stress I manage people’s investments for a living and my goal is to get them to stress less (as money can be a definite source of stress). We’re all susceptible to stress, even those who appear to be living “the good life”. There’s a difference between the occasional stressful “situation” and a stressed-out lifestyle. If you feel like you spend most of your day in the stress zone, it may be time to reassess what you’re doing, where you’re doing it and with whom. Here are some patterns I’ve noticed: 1. “You didn’t have time to breathe today” If you never have time to grab a coffee, eat lunch or visit the restroom during the day, chances are you’re “in the stress zone”. If every day is so packed you don’t feel like it’s possible to take care of your basic human needs, you can’t be thinking clearly. It’s a fact that we’re better friends, and humans in general when we’re taking care of ourselves. Drinking water, eating right, exercising and taking breaks are all crucial for us to be “balanced” and perform at our best. When we’re overwhelmed and swimming in tasks, it’s impossible to focus, and hinders your ability to make progress and GOOD DECISIONS. We all think we’re great multitaskers. We’re not. Let’s admit it and move on. The next time you’re in “I don’t have time to eat” mode, take a long hard look - something's gotta give. Tonight, ask yourself, “What did I REALLY accomplish today?” 2. “Your To-Do List just went onto Page 2” When you’re out to dinner with friends, at the gym or walking the beach, and your “to do” list is being built; or if you’re whole family can name everyone you work or volunteer with and their annoying quirks, that’s a sign that you’re not “balancing”. There’s nothing wrong with “caring” or wanting to do well, but if you spend all your friends & family time talking about others, don’t be shocked if you find yourself with less friend and family time. No one wants to constantly hear about your drama (we all have it) — even those who love you! Want to know

a trick? Work on your listening skills. You have two ears and one mouth – use them proportionally. 3. “You’re always cranky” Or sick, or both. Our bodies have a way of telling us we’re too stressed if we’re moving too fast to notice it ourselves. If you find you’re irritable, unusually tired, or feeling lousy, this is something to pay attention to. It’s not a shock that so many of us end up sick after a big event or project. We used up all our energy getting through it, and our bodies have had enough. Pay attention to how you’re feeling physically as well as emotionally. And get yourself to the gym, a doctor or to a happy hour and on the right track with self-care (don’t neglect yourself!)

4. “Next week is a CRAZY week”

in Colts Neck.

Nothing breaks my heart more than hearing feelings of anxiety about “next week” heading into a weekend. Existing in a perpetual and rolling state of dread is no way to live. We’re only on this planet for a short period of time. And our mental state takes its toll in so many ways all of which we’re not yet even aware of. If this sounds like you, talk to someone, take time off and do whatever you need to get yourself back to normal speed. You deserve to enjoy your life!

If any of the above resonates with you, take a deep breath. Reassess what and who matters to you and adjust in both big and small ways. It could be as simple as taking a day off or a yoga class. Change is scary. But so is spending your life stressed out. Make change for yourself! Be a little selfish - you deserve it. Quote of the Month “You can do ANYTHING – but not EVERYTHING.” Bonus Quote “STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERTS” - Greg Calderaro Throughout history, “The Table” symbolizes a center of ideas, spirituality, family, discussion and education. Annual Wine & Martini Tasting Benefit Raises more than $50,000 for Impact 100 Jersey Coast LEFT TO RIGHT: Heather Burke, Impact 100 Jersey Coast Vice President and Co-Founder; Deirdre Spiropoulos, Impact 100 Jersey Coast President and Co-Founder; Lynn Ann and Steve Bidgood

SALT CREEK GRILLE’S 16TH ANNUAL WINE & MARTINI TASTING FUNDRAISER raised over $50,000 for Impact 100 Jersey Coast at the event on April 11. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised by sponsorships, ticket sales and live auction items went directly to Impact 100 Jersey Coast. In the last 16 years, The Wine & Martini event has raised more than $1 million in total funds for local charities. The lively, cocktail-style event was sold out. More than 150 attendees enjoyed live jazz music by the local favorite, Bobby Boyd Trio, great food, premiere wines and spirits, and a live auction with auctioneer NJ 101.5 Big Joe Henry. Impact 100 Jersey Coast is a collaborative of women of all ages and backgrounds who combine their charitable dollars, experience and energy to raise awareness of our community’s most pressing needs and to fund transformational grants for high-impact projects addressing those needs. Earlier this year, Salt Creek Grille announced its chosen charity for

2019 with a flag presentation bearing Impact 100’s logo. The flag will fly from the waterfront restaurant through the entire year, with the intent to create more public awareness. “We are tremendously grateful to Salt Creek Grille for supporting Impact’s continued growth and for helping us reach new women and nonprofits in every corner of our community,” said Heather Burke, Vice President and Cofounder. “Their support will truly have a ripple effect in our community as we help identify and fund high-impact projects across a range of issue areas.” The event was sponsored by the following organizations and individuals: Brown Brother Harriman, Stillwell-Hansen, ICC Industrial Cooling Corp, Mazza Recycling, Two Rivers Community Bank, Liotta Family and Missig Family, Steve Bidgood, Jennifer Clark, Cheryl and Hayden Jones, Lori and David Missig, Relish Your Chef by Marcy Ragan, Deirdre and George

Spiropoulos, and Carol Stillwell. A raw bar was donated by Lusty Lobster and artisan cheeses by Sickles Market. Wines were donated and tastings poured by representatives from Allied Beverage Group, LLC; Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery; J. Lohr Vineyard & Wines; The Winebow Group; distilled spirits were poured by Zyr Vodka. Local craft beers were provided by Cape May Brewery and Shore Point Distributing Company, Inc.. Food was donated by Brubella Inc; Cutler Produce; Halperns’ Steak & Seafood Company. Flowers were provided by Guaranteed Plants, linens by Sanitary Linens and rentals by Paul David Partywares. “We couldn’t raise this kind of money without the support of my fantastic staff and generous vendors and local businesses,” said Steve Bidgood, Salt Creek Grille’s co-owner. “I only ask my vendors once a year to come forward and help out, and boy do they! Many of them have donated products for 16 straight years.”

Colts Neck PTO Held Annual Ladies Night Out BY SUSAN MURPHY Colts Neck PTO hosted its annual Ladies Night Out on April 11 at Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club in Farmingdale. This year the theme was a Mardi Gras Gala. The event is the PTO’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Over 250 district parents, teachers and staff members, ladies only, attend-

ed. Many of the women arrived in traditional purple, green and gold colors of Mardi Gras and some wore masks. “Our Annual Ladies Night Out Gala is our biggest and best fundraiser of the year. We rely on our Chairs, Gala Committee, sponsors, ad-

vertisers, basket donors, and all our attendees to make it an amazing evening that allows us to fund the countless activities for Colts Neck Schools. This year certainly did not disappoint and it was one of our best years yet! I am truly grateful to be a part of this organization and for all of the hard work put into this event,” said PTO President Amy Dimes. Event Chairs Courtney McCormick and Crystal Kaplan shared, “Our Mardi Gras Gala was a hit! It was high energy the entire night and you could tell everyone truly enjoyed themselves. Our Annual Gala is something we look forward to every year, not only because it gives us the opportunity to come together as a community, but it’s also quite the accomplishment when we see how much money we raised in the end to support our children and their education.”

Local Author Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of 1969 with a Unique Novel By Susan Murphy

olmdel resident Sea Gudinski recently published her first novel, titled 1969: A Brief and Beautiful Trip Back, in commemoration of the year’s 50th anniversary. The novel took six years to research. Gudinski is a graduate of Saint Benedict Catholic and Holmdel High School. Although she was an excellent student and graduated with honors, she chose not to go to college and instead manages her family’s business. Gudinski explained what led to her decision to write this novel. “As a lover of history and a seeker of knowledge both new and forgotten, I have been composing works of historical fiction for the last eleven years. 1969 is my first published novel, and as is typical of my work, it combines factual events with a fictional narrative. The novel is a tribute to the era. Both of my parents lived through the 1960s. My father was a soldier in Vietnam as well as a musician. He was involved in the counterculture and attended Woodstock in 1969—an event that he felt dramatically influenced the course of his life. I grew up hearing his stories and listening to the music of the era and felt a personal connection to the time. I was inspired by the time and by the people and what they were trying to do. There is something magical about the ideals of peace and love and freedom expressed in that way. There’s something about an entire generation of people

30

so taken by the same vision, each of them striving toward it as they saw fit. There’s something about a couple million people trying to live a ‘utopian’ lifestyle in a very dystopian world. There’s something very poetic and something very raw about that. It speaks to our humanity and the human condition; our follies and our redemption, our shortcomings and our triumphs.” She continued, “My intent behind 1969 was to recapture the spirit of that time half a century ago and preserve for history a record of the message, meaning, and legacy of the era. To provide an entertaining, accurate, and objective perspective of the decade that could be enjoyed by those who lived through it as well as those who learned about it in school.” When asked if she personally experienced any portion of the storyline, Sea shared, “Although I did not experience the events of 1969 firsthand; however, a good

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

deal of Rhiannon’s (the book’s narrator) experiences and spiritual realizations are based on my own. Six years is a long time to spend dedicated to one literary work, and many of the things I learned and experienced throughout the process of researching and writing became absorbed into the novel. There was a great deal of growth and self-seeking that went on in my own life over the course of those six years, and you can see that plainly reflected in my writing as the story progresses.”

Visit Sea Gudinski’s website at seagudinski.com. Her novel can be found on Amazon.com or wherever books are sold. The website details the events and music of 1969 and is a valuable tool for revisiting that era.

The Country Day School of Colts Neck Celebrates Success and New Expansion BY JEANNE WALL Publisher and Editor, TAPinto Holmdel, Colts Neck & Middletown Sign-up for free daily online news at TAPinto.net/enews.

In March, there was a warm welcome on a rainy day for the open house and ribbon cutting to celebrate the new expansion of The Country Day School of Colts Neck (CDSCN). Nurturing and educating children from infancy through pre-k since 2007, CDSCN celebrated the opening of its new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Lab, an additional classroom, and an expanded Nursery. Colts Neck Committeemen; Mike Viola and JP Bartolomeo were present, as well as Glen Dalakian and Sue Fitzpatrick of the Colts Neck Business Association.

The ribbon cutting was held in the new STEAM Lab. The Lab is affectionately named “Miss Mimi’s STEAM Room” after a beloved teacher Dr. Mariana “Mimi” Pedro-Medlin who passed in October of 2018. Her husband, Jay Medlin, was at the ribbon cutting and commented, “My wife Mimi was a school psychologist for many years, and she loved more than anything to work with young children. She changed her career and decided to work here and found so much joy in doing so. She really loved to work here.” The classrooms were open for touring; teachers greeted guests and answered any questions. “It has been such an incredible year!” said owner Lori Ellis. “My husband John and I are so excited about all of the new things we are doing. We are so grateful to our 70+ families for all their support. Our Executive Director, Ashley Mole has played a huge role in our success during this past year. Ashley has been with the school for many years and has always had a tremendous following amongst the students and parents. I couldn’t ask for a better director and I’m so grateful to her for partnering with me on this journey. We’re so fortunate to have such incredible teachers, many of whom have been with us for many years and some who

have joined us this past year and have already had a tremendous impact on our students’ lives. This is the best job in the world! We’re so blessed to have a school that feels like home to so many families.” Class sizes are kept small and if you are going back to work after baby is born, there is an infant care program with a 1 to 2 caregiver to child ratio, providing unparalleled care. The CDSCN mantra is “Our nurturing staff ensures that every child feels welcome, special and loved.” CDSCN’s classrooms are meant to be colorful and welcoming, the staff warm and friendly. The walls are full of children’s artwork and inspirational messages. The new STEAM Lab has learning stations with exciting activities like butterfly metamorphising, plant growing, an engineering corner, and so much more with the intention of engaging and exciting young minds. At CDSCN, they strive to make learning fun. The children are immersed in an interactive playful learning environment where social interaction is made enjoyable for everyone. The Country Day School offers flexible full time and part time schedules and drop in care to meet every need for registered students and their families. Your child does not already have to be potty trained to begin at CDSCN. All of the CDSCN teachers are experienced and certified to teach pre-k and early education. All of the teachers and administrators are trained in CPR and first aid. Call 732.252.8908 to set up an appointment for a private tour or visit cdscn.com for more information.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children of Monmouth County honored Tony Shay with CASA’s prestigious President’s Award on April 6 at the organization’s Spring Garden Gala at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal. “We were thrilled to be able to recognize Tony’s long-time accomplishments as a true champion for children,” said Cynthia Van Brunt, executive director for CASA for Children of Monmouth County. “We greatly admire his many years of service on the Child Placement Review Board and his ten instrumental years as CASA board

president. Tony’s dedication to the needs of underserved children is both humbling and inspiring.” CASA also honored Monmouth County resident Alana Barofsky with CASA’s Collegiate Award for Humanitarianism. “Alana epitomizes the can-do spirit of volunteerism, and we’re delighted to recognize her selfless efforts in giving back to the community,” said Van Brunt. CASA’s Spring Garden Gala featured live and silent auctions, cocktails and appetizers, dinner and dessert stations and entertainment.

CASA for Children of Monmouth County is part of a statewide network of community-based, non-profit programs that recruit, screen, train, and supervise volunteers to “Speak Up for a Child” removed from home due to abuse and/or neglect. The Colts Neck-based organization’s 100 advocates served 205 children this past year. CASA is the only program in New Jersey that uses trained volunteers to work oneon-one with children, ensuring that each one gets the services needed and achieves permanency in a safe, nurturing home.

New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Announced The 11th annual induction ceremony for the New Jersey Hall of Fame will be held Sunday, October 27, at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. Tickets will go on sale in June for the induction, which will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. “The ceremony honoring our 2019 class is both a celebration of the inductees’ achievements and a celebration of New Jersey,” said Jon F. Paramount, which is part of the Asbury Park Convention Hall complex. Announcement of musical performers for the star-studded induction is to be made in June. “Our 11th annual induction ceremony will be a celebration of another stellar class of Jersey legends, and the culmination of our $10 million capital campaign,” said Steve Edwards, president of the NJHOF. The museum is scheduled to open in December 2020 at the American Dream complex. In the meantime, a hologram time capsule is sited at Terminal A in Newark Liberty International Airport, and includes holographic interviews with inductees Connie Chung, Mary Higgins Clark, Tommy James, Wyclef Jean, Mark Kelly, and Steven Van Zandt. CM is proud of our continued support of the NJHOF and we look forward to another year as a Vice Chair Sponsor of the Induction Ceremony.

Colts Neck Business Association Celebrates Sold-Out 11th Annual Luncheon

Colts Neck Business Association (CNBA) held its 11th Annual Luncheon at Trump National Golf Course on March 26, 2019. This soldout event began with business networking, where attendees had the opportunity to converse with numerous vendors from Monmouth and Ocean Counties, receive autographs from NFL superstar Fred Baxter and enter into the silent auctions. In attendance were the CNBA 2019 Officers, which included President Glen J. Dalakian, Vice President Dino Nicoletta, Treasurer Oliver Guminski, Recording Secretary Leanne Lucarelli, Corresponding Secretary Vito Viola, and Past President Sue Fitzpatrick. In addition to the CNBA Executive Board, there were over 240 members and prospective members in attendance. During the sit-down lunch, President Glen J. Dalakian highlighted the 2018 accomplishments of the CNBA and honored Mario Geneve, one of the Founding Fathers of the CNBA, and all he has contributed to the community of Colts Neck. The CNBA Officers also took the time to honor the supporting member of the year, Mary Burke of Heritage House Sotheby’s International Realty.

Inaugural Golf Outing is a Special Thank You As a way to show gratitude to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, George and Mary Schneider, long-time Colts Neck residents, are hosting a golf outing on July 8 at the Trump National Golf Course. On February 2, 2018, Bridget, their 6-year-old granddaughter, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right leg. Her parents applied to St. Jude in Memphis, TN for her treatments and Bridget received 20 weeks of chemo, followed by a leg amputation, and then 32 more weeks of chemo. She will remain a St. Jude outpatient until the age of 21. George and Mary decided to create the St. Jude New Jersey Golf Classic in honor of the strength and courage of their granddaughter. Guests will enjoy a full round of golf, lunch, cocktails, live music, a silent auction, and dinner to benefit the St. Jude mission: Finding cures. Saving children.® Sponsorship opportunities are available, as well as individual tickets for the cocktail reception and dinner. “If you have a healthy child or grandchild say thank you and donate!” said Mary. Bridget’s cancer was discovered when she went to the doctor for an injury she had gotten during soccer practice. She had appeared to be a perfectly healthy child, and the family expresses gratitude for having found the cancer when they did. Mary left her job and temporarily moved to Memphis to be with her daughter, Jaime Korn, as they navigated Bridget’s illness. Jaime (Mary’s daughter) moved to Arizona with her husband after graduating from St. John Vianney High School and living in Colts Neck with her parents. “St. Jude was amazing,” said Mary. “Not only did they cover any and all expenses not paid by insurance, they gave us housing, shuttle service, school for the kids. They have found a way to make 42

St. Jude a happy place despite the difficulty of the situation. They even host a senior prom. They make it as normal as they can for the kids.” The Golf Outing is meant to help St. Jude and its mission to end childhood cancers. “When Danny Thomas started St. Jude in the 1950s, 1 out of 5 of the children survived. Now, it’s 4 out of 5 at the hospital,” shared Mary. “St. Jude is working to make that number worldwide. They just donated $100 million to the United Nations as the odds worldwide for children are still 1 in 5. They even share their research, which is not the norm. They’re just amazing, I can’t say enough about them.” For more information, please contact Becky Gibson at 212.379.1620 or Becky.Gibson@stjude.org.

Donna Ongsiako Emerges from Darkness with Mission to Help Survivors of Violent Crimes

As I tried to shut the door, he charged at it and stuck the knife through the opening before I could shut it all the way. The knife cut the tip of my finger and I pulled my hand off the door. He got in. He was in my house standing in front of me with a knife, staring straight at me. He could have just held me at knife point, taken my car keys and left, again, another opportunity for him to leave, but he didn’t. He started slashing me... (an excerpt from Donna Ongsiako’s Victim Impact Statement) Sometimes a movie or a book can have a lasting impact. You may leave the movie theater and you can’t stop thinking about the movie. Sometimes the experience changes how you feel about certain aspects of your life. Perhaps it changes your behavior in some way. Maybe it moves you, stays with you. Maybe it changes you forever. That is what Donna Ongsiako’s real life, nonfiction, story seems to do to everyone who hears her tell it, or anyone who reads her victim impact statement. It is haunting. It is unbelievable. In 2013, Donna was living happily with her daughter Kiersten, in an old farmhouse on a flower farm in bucolic Colts Neck. It was a peaceful place to live, it was home. "I was happy and carefree,” shared Donna. “I can honestly say that life was great.” She had just shared a fun few days enjoying the 4th of July holiday with family and friends. The evening was winding down

on July 6th and Donna was preparing to go to sleep. It was shortly after midnight, the temperature was hot, very hot. A heat-wave had hit the east coast. Her home was dark, the lights were out, it was bedtime. Donna thought she heard her cat scratching at the door and went to let him in for the night. She swung open her front door and stood face-to-face with a stranger. He had a knife. He immediately charged at the door as she tried to shut it, and without a word he began slashing her... Donna chose to be anonymous at the time of the trial - not anymore. This article is about Donna and her mission to help victims of violent crimes. This is about the amazing strength that she found within herself despite the heinous violent crime against her and all the suffering she bears everyday with her physical and mental scars; Donna has emerged and she's speaking out. She's helping others every day, on a mission to help victims of random violent crimes. Donna has founded

Survivors of Violent Crimes, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which is a peer support group providing resources for survivors of violent crimes. The organization's mission is also to raise awareness of PTSD. I had the privilege to meet and get to know Donna in an exclusive series of in-person interviews, including accompanying her on the road at the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office in Freehold, where she shared her story to help ninety cadet officers better understand crime from a victim’s perspective. Donna, at the hands of a stranger, suffered a brutal stabbing attack. He stabbed her multiple times across the face, her neck, plunging the knife into her chest and then into the back of her neck... He left her to die. Walked over her saying, "You’re dead (explicit language)". Then he took her car keys, stole her car and took off into the night. After seven long hours of surgery where according to reports given to Donna there was doubt from many that she was going to make it; Donna survived—she was on life support.

onna comments, "I remember waking up in the hospital in absolute disbelief. I was fortunate that some of the best trauma doctors in the country were at the hospital when the ambulance arrived. They eliminated some of the scarring that would have been front and center on my neck. They had to repair my internal injuries from all the wounds to my chest area. I have a continuous scar running from my neck and down my chest to the bottom of my sternum. I suffered nerve damage to one side of my body, causing my left side to have permanent nerve damage. I had surgery to repair the drooping of my eyelid; there is no surgery to repair the nerve damage. I woke up scarred forever. Looking at my face for the first time was something I will never forget. I was horrified. I had stitches and staples in my face, front of my neck, back of my neck, chest, abdomen, hand, my left arm was flail and my left eye was drooping... I was physically and mentally broken." For Donna it was the beginning of a very long road. "I was now living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, living in fear every moment. In addition, the person that did this to me was still out there somewhere. I knew he could come back and finish me off. My car was found and taken into evidence; my home was a crime scene that I would never return to live in." Eventually Donna's attacker was caught. He was only 16 at the time of the crime. This article is not about him. (There are many articles from that time that can be searched online for details on the attacker). This is Donna's story. Donna also won a civil trial against her attacker, and his father for hiding the whereabouts of his son. Donna comments on the civil suit, "It's not about the money, it's about accountability. It felt so good when the judge validated my feelings that I had been violated. You can't put a price on physical and mental scarring. My prescription for time off after the attack was for three months for the physical wounds to heal. What

48

I would like to have is to be rewarded the opportunity to step back and take a mental break with the award that my civil suit could afford me. Since the attack the psychological healing has to happen when I can fit it in. Collecting on the civil award would afford the opportunity to take the time and explore different treatment modalities. It would create the opportunity to focus on healing both my daughter and me, to rebuild my life, my comfort and my safety. That financial burden falls on me, for the rest of my life. " As part of her work with her nonprofit, Survivors of Violent Crimes, Donna's contact information is given to victims of random violent crimes to call on her to help them on their journey of healing. Part of Donna's mission is also to raise awareness of PTSD. "Living with PTSD every day is extremely difficult,” noted Donna. “Every morning I wake up in fear, full of anxiety. I don't sleep well. My anxiety skyrockets at night. I sleep with a light on, always. Waking in the morning starts a process of calming my nerves, I physically tremble, I need to regulate my breathing, I have to talk myself into the day and focus on getting from my home to my office. It's a constant struggle to confirm that I am safe. It's exhausting. It affects every part of my life. Fortunately for me, my employer has been over and above supportive, making allowances along the way. Having

had the time to try to give my mind the time to heal." Donna added, "The Parkland survivor who tragically died by suicide recently was also dealing with post-traumatic stress syndrome. We have to look for the symptoms for someone that has gone through trauma and realize that the face of PTSD can look like me, gets up every day, makes themselves look presentable, gets to work... there needs to be help, more awareness of what to look for. I am relieved that people are talking about PTSD with the Parkland suicide, and I feel that people look at me and think, ‘Oh she’s fine, look at her, she’s doing great.’ She smiled, “I'm not great. There is not a day, or even a minute that goes by that is not a struggle in dealing with my PTSD. It sucks you into the darkest deepest black hole that you can be in and I believe the girl in Parkland was in that dark place and I have been there." Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Dr. Christine Moutier, MD, said, “The internal experience of mental health conditions like PTSD is actually so profound it's hard to put into words to help people understand. Just like physical pain can be intense but only the person experiencing it knows what it's like, the same goes for symptoms that stem from changes in the brain. And just like physical pain changes over time and affects the person in different ways,

Don’t be afraid of the stigma of PTSD. It’s okay to fear PTSD but not the person that has it. my job to go back to and move forward in was so important. It kept me moving, motivated, and gave me a sense of purpose amid horror and chaos. I am eternally grateful to them. For my speaking engagements it takes every ounce of my strength to get there and to make it happen, but I know it's something I have to do to help others." Donna continues, "I am very fearful of people that I do not know, doors, and the dark. I am extremely fearful of anyone coming to my front door and I have to have notice from anyone that they are going to visit. I am absolutely terrified of certain situations, dark rooms, everyone to me is a possible threat. I see my physical scars every time I look in the mirror, but I live every moment of every day with my mental wounds, the invisible pain of PTSD is overwhelming and it is nearly six years later and I feel I have not

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

the same goes for mental health symptoms. When we experience something traumatic, our physiology in our brain and body is affected. For some people that develops into a full-blown syndrome (PTSD) which takes on a life of its own, floods the body with stress hormones like cortisol on an ongoing chronic basis, causes the person to be on hyperalert for any potential threat, even when they are in a safe place. Sleep, mood, thinking, perception and processing can all be intensely affected. One reason it can be hard to see all of this going on in a loved one or colleague is that our culture hasn't taught us a way to express these experiences. So, we grow up being socialized to 'chin up' and 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger'. There are times when that's terrific to work through challenges on your own; but there are other times when it becomes literally life threatening.”

DONNA IN JUNE 2013 – WEEKS BEFORE SHE WAS ATTACKED.

"Don’t be afraid of the stigma of PTSD,” commented Donna. “It’s okay to fear PTSD but not the person that has it. That’s part of the problem because when you have PTSD you feel like no one can understand you because you are different from everyone else. Everyone expects you to move on and be your old self again and that’s impossible without the therapy and the time you need to take to go through the healing process." Donna, when speaking during normal conversation, often seems sad. However, when she talks about the first responders on the scene of the attack, Officer Tom Ward for instance, her face lights up. When she speaks about her victim advocate assigned to her since the attack; Nancy Frankie, her face lights up. Donna credits a large part of her ability to function to Nancy Frankie, Director, Victim Witness Unit Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. "Nancy Frankie has helped me so much since she was assigned to my case,” said Donna. “I would have never made it this far without Nancy. She is someone who I feel has helped me more than anyone in my journey to heal and to help others." Donna, as part of her mission to help others, now assists Nancy in presentations to cadet classes, speaking about the victim's perspective and how important first responders are. "I believe Tom Ward (Colts Neck Police) and the other officers and first aid responders saved my life, along with the surgeons of course," said Donna. "The way Tom cradled my head and the first aid that was administered by everyone kept me alive until the doctors could take over. Speaking to the cadets and telling my story in detail gives them insight from the victims perspective, lets them know the vital role they will play in saving lives." In addition to the cadet classes, Donna visits state prisons speaking to groups of inmates showing them and explaining to them from the victim's perspective the destruction caused by senseless violent crimes. "I've watched grown men, hardened crim-

inals brought to tears after hearing my victim impact statement and seeing the pictures of my wounds,” said Donna. “I know my talks are changing their pattern of thinking." Donna also speaks to criminal justice classes at colleges, explaining the victim's perspective and the vital role criminal justice serves. Nancy Frankie, Director, Victim Witness Unit Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, said, "I have been working with Donna from the beginning of this terrible crime, and over the years I’ve had the opportunity to watch her work through her process and evolve from this experience. Donna has been sharing her story with police recruits for years; with each presentation, she is able to initiate a tremendous impact. She expands their compassion, which in turn changes their life, and influences how they will treat future victims in their career. You mentioned that Donna has a light within her, which you say is special.” "After I was attacked, I soon realized that there were great support groups with many resources available for victims of domestic violence and many other categories, but there was no organization in place to help victims of random acts of violence,” said Donna. “I left the hospital displaced from my home, paying car payments on a car that was impounded as evidence, and I lived in constant, intense fear. I was fortunate enough to have an employer who kept me employed, and when I could physically go back to work my job was waiting for me, but not everyone has that situation. I was physically and mentally devastated." When criminals are sentenced, they are hit with a fine and that money goes into a Victims of Crime Compensation Organization (VCCO) which covers any crime related injuries, repair, relocation, doctor's co-pays, prescriptions, but the victim is capped at $25,000. Donna's surgeries were covered mainly under her employer's insurance, but the repair of her eye was a battle to have covered because it was considered plastic surgery. Eventually, with the doctor lowering the price and finally the VCCO

NANCY FRANKIE, DIRECTOR, VICTIM WITNESS UNIT MONMOUTH COUNTY PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE, WITH DONNA AT THE MONMOUTH COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WITH THE CADET CLASS WHERE DONNA SHARED HER STORY.

agreeing it was necessary surgery, the VCCO paid. Currently Donna is near her cap with the VCCO. “Innocent victims should not have to struggle to pay for treatments,” said Donna. "I need ongoing therapies for my PTSD and soon my VCCO contribution will be maxed out. There are no benefits to cover my treatments and that is not the way it should be." Raising awareness of PTSD is something that Donna is very passionate about. It's a big part of her mission for Survivors of Violent Crimes. "I decided to form Survivors of Violent Crimes to be a resource offered to anyone who finds themselves in a situation like mine,” shared Donna. “See me, I look like everything is fine right? This is what PTSD looks like. This is the invisible condition that needs intense therapies. We need to talk about it, start the conversation. I want every victim of a violent crime to understand and feel the following: YOU MATTER, you have a voice, you are not alone, and your story can help others." In Monmouth County, when someone is a victim of a violent crime, the victim advocate assigned can provide the victim with Donna's Survivors of Violent Crimes information and her phone number to contact. When Donna gets a call from a victim, she goes as quickly as she can to be there for that person. Donna Ongsiako has emerged from darkness, providing a light to so many.

New Firehouse Slated for Holmdel Township

“Fire safety is critical. It is really, really critical” stated Mayor Hinds. The Holmdel Township Committee agreed to amend the 2019 municipal budget to finance up to five million for a new firehouse. The resolution, introduced by Mayor Eric Hinds, would result in additional funds in the budget to build a new firehouse and add supplemental paid personnel to assist in rapid response to fire calls. It was passed unanimously. New Jersey municipalities finance capital items such as firehouses, streets and road construction, and other high-ticket items through bonds. The budget typically includes a 5% down payment of the approximate amount required for the capital. In the example of a five-million-dollar firehouse, the Township would add an additional $250,000 to the budget. Mayor Hinds stated that the budget will still be a ‘zero budget’ so the funds would

be redirected from another source or estimates could be modified accordingly. After the budget is formally adopted in May, the Township can consider introducing a bond ordinance. A bond ordinance requires two readings. On first reading it is passed by a simple majority. On second reading, at least four members of the Township Committee must approve it. Personnel funding was requested by Committeeman Rocco Pascucci. “I applaud the five million for the firehouse. We need it now,” said Committeeman Pascucci. “But I also believe we need, and I would like it added to the budget, at least $400,000 for paid people in the day... Monday through Friday (during the day) we are weak.” The request to add $400,000 would put the Township above the budget cap so it was reduced to $275,000 to address Committeeman Pascucci’s concerns. miteeman Critelli agreed with Pascucci and the others followed suit. Holmdel has lost several homes to fire in recent years and there is a keen interest on fire safety by the community. A formal study was also conducted on behalf of the Township Committee. The action follows several areas of professional guidance from the report. Namely, a properly equipped firehouse and the manpower to effectively run it 24/7. Also included are 55 emergency response radios. The supplemental paid personnel would be under the Department of Community Development, according to the Township Administrator. The location of the firehouse is still a matter to be decided but two locations mentioned most are the existing site at Crawfords Corner Road, or the farm at F and F Nurseries. F and F Nurseries was purchased years ago to preserve farmland and open space. Any discussion on building on this farming site instead of renovating an existing site may be more complicated for the Township Committee. Mayor Hinds referenced that the engineer and other professionals would be key in site selection discussions and much work is still to be done. The public hearing for the budget will be held this month.

The Forum will highlight Holmdel Township Committee Republican Candidates in preparation for the Republican primary on Tuesday, June 4 in which both Republicans and Independents can vote. CILU will accept questions for the Township Committee candidates submitted electronically to rcriscione@verizon.net by May 13 at 4:00 pm or in writing by 7:15 pm. Late submissions will not be accepted. Questions are then screened to prevent duplications and allow for a wide range of pertinent topics. Biased or provocative questions will be denied. This Forum will be videotaped and posted on YouTube (Search CILU Holmdel). Voting registration and absentee ballot applications will also be available. Tracing ASSETS ACQUIRED DURING THE MARRIAGE ARE SUBJECT TO EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION IN A DIVORCE. There are exceptions. Inheritances and gifts from third parties to one spouse are not subject to the other spouse’s claims. Assets acquired before the marriage are generally not subject to equitable distribution either. But what happens if, over time, a premarital or an inherited asset goes from one account to another to another? Or goes from one form into another? What if, for example, cash was inherited during the marriage and used to buy stock, also during the marriage? Does the spouse have a claim to that stock? The first thing to understand is that the spouse who is seeking to exclude an asset acquired during the marriage from the other spouse’s claims must prove that it is an exempt asset. That is called the burden of proof. The other spouse only has to show that it was acquired

during the marriage. If that is proven, the burden shifts to the other spouse to prove that it is exempt. He or she must prove that, although it was acquired during the marriage, it is exempt because it can be traced to an inheritance or a premarital asset. Even if the stock was purchased during the marriage it might be exempt if a paper trail exists to show that the stock was purchased with exempt funds. That is called tracing. It’s like putting a jigsaw puzzle together or connecting the dots. You have to find the pieces (the documents) that trace the asset from its original exempt form to its present form. If you can do that, you have a good chance of excluding it from your spouse’s claims. In the case of an inheritance, for example, it would be helpful to have a copy of the decedent’s will showing the be-

quest. Documentation from the estate, like a cancelled check or a letter from the executor or the estate’s lawyer, would help to show the transmittal. A deposit slip or a bank statement showing that the money went into your account shortly after the payment was made would be the next piece to the puzzle. If the money sat in the account for a while, or moved from account to account, bank documents showing the history of the funds (tracing) is the next piece. And, finally, documents showing the path of the funds to the purchase of the stock are the last puzzle pieces to complete the picture. Tracing can involve large or small amounts or long or short periods of time. The larger the amount and the longer the time period for which an asset must be traced, the harder the task. But when large amounts are involved, the potential reward may make the effort very worthwhile.

Freeholder Burry Nominated for National Leadership Award Freeholder Lillian G. Burry has been nominated for the Association of Defense Communities (ADC) 2019 John Lynch Base Redevelopment Award for her role in the redevelopment of Fort Monmouth. The nomination was made by the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA), which Freeholder Burry serves as a Board member and the Chairwoman of the Veterans Staff Advisory Committee. “Freeholder Burry has been the backbone through this whole redevelopment process,” said Bruce Steadman, Executive Director of FMERA. “She has been outstanding in terms of her leadership and her support of every initiative. It was the natural pick for her to be our nominee.” In the written nomination, Steadman noted that, among her many contributions to the Fort’s redevelopment, Freeholder Burry has been a tireless veterans advocate, keen on ensuring that the sacrifices made by the Fort’s soldiers be remembered and honored and was the driving force behind the County’s commitment to locate its Veterans Connection office in historic Russel Hall, on the Fort’s Main Post. Freeholder Burry was also instrumental in proposing and obtaining Freeholder Board approval for Monmouth County to

issue bonds backed by a County guaranty, and loan the funds to FMERA for its 2016 purchase of the Main Post. This agreement allowed for Monmouth County and FMERA to assume control of the redevelopment of the Fort. “Over the course of my career in public service, I have had the opportunity to serve as an advocate for several worthwhile causes, but the redevelopment of Fort Monmouth is something that I hold very dear,” said Freeholder Burry. “Working toward bringing life back to the Fort, while preserving open space and historic sites, has been incredibly fulfilling and something I am so proud to be a part of. To be nominated for such an esteemed award for these years of hard work and achievements made with FMERA, is an absolute honor.” Freeholder Burry, who is currently serving a fourth term as freeholder, began her public service as a councilwoman in Matawan Borough. After moving to Colts Neck, she served as committeewoman, deputy mayor and mayor, making her mark in historic preservation and open space conservation. First elected to the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders in November 2005, she served as the first woman director in 2008 and again in 2010, 2014, and 2017.

During her career, Freeholder Burry has received many awards, including the Marine Corps League Distinguished Citizen, the Sheriff’s Officers Fraternal Order of Police Person of the Year, the Historical Association’s Person of the Year, the Latino American Association’s Outstanding Community Member, the Eastern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Spinnaker Award for Public Service, the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore’s Women of Distinction, and the first Vanguard Award for lifetime devotion to the arts given by the Count Basie Theatre. Working in a collaborative effort with the Soldier On organization, Burry found a home for homeless veterans of Monmouth County.

neighbors. The aim of Soul Kitchen is to empower individuals by providing volunteer opportunities to earn dining certificates to feed themselves and their family, and by providing job training in the food industry. Paying customers help effect change by donating enough to cover the cost of the volunteer customers. The customers are treated with dignity and respect, while uniting communities and forming healthy and lasting relationships through food. The second part of the program will feature Mil Wexler Kobrinski, a local artist, who will speak to the group on behalf of Empty Bowls, which is a group of teachers, artists, and students who have banded together in using art to promote hunger awareness. An empty bowl is a powerful symbol of food insecurity. As a community they create pottery bowls, glaze and sell them for Soul Kitchen. The money from the sales goes to ‘Pay It Forward’ for a person in need to have a free meal at the community restaurant. All are invited to attend this wonderful program. Come at 11:30 am and join in the Spiritual Center Chapel for the rosary. Bring your lunch into Madonna hall, where Guild members will have delicious desserts ready for you. The presentation will start around noon. In addition, the Guild will be collecting bathing suits (ages 5-13) and beach towels for the Collier Camp Program.

Have You Considered Sedation Dentistry for You or Your Child? Our 9-year-old needed two baby root canals and 7 cavities filled. After trying a couple of appointments with our regular pediatric dentist, our son became anxious and aggravated. Our pediatric dentist recommended we put him under general anesthesia and have everything done at one time. Of course I tried to learn as much as I could about putting a 9-year-old under general anesthesia, thus beginning my journey into sedation dentistry. Turns out, Dr Lichtenstein is THE GO-TO dentist for general anesthesia because of his many years of hospital operating experience. General anesthesia is serious for anyone and needs to be done by someone with great skill, great experience and regular practice. After researching ALL the options for our son, it was a no-brainer to go to Dr Lichtenstein. We were totally lucky to have a Dentist Anesthesiologist in our state, much less the same county. There are only a handful of these specially trained doctors in the Northeast. Not all have the 13+ years of hospital OR experience Dr Lichtenstein has.

We knew our little guy was in the best possible hands. We talked to many practices who spoke highly of Dr Lichtenstein and his ability to do excellent dental work as well as sedate our son safely using his hospital-grade “operating room”. Breathing, temperature, pulse, all these need to be monitored! This type of monitoring is not done in a regular dental office. Ask, ask, ask! Our son did great, and when Dr Lichtenstein (himself) called that night to check on us, our son was out playing soccer. Wonderful experience. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about dentistry and sedation during investigating options for our son. As a parent, I needed to feel confident and choose the absolute BEST route for my son. There’s some pretty scary stuff out there, and I always tell everyone I know about Dr Lichtenstein and his background and training which make ALL THE DIFFERENCE. All the best, L. THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: MUSICAL PERFORMANCE BY PHIL BRUSCHI

Saturday, May 11 at 2:00 pm On February 3, 1959, American rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event later became known as “The Day the Music Died”, after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song, American Pie. One theme of the song seems to be the loss of innocence of the early rock and roll generation as symbolized by the plane crash claiming the lives of these young singing heroes.

This program will take it a step further by paying tribute to not only those killed in that ‘59 plane crash, but a number of other rock stars who died long before their time. Phil will discuss the careers of such artists as Jim Croche, Harry Chapin, John Lennon, Ricky Nelson, and more, while singing their hit songs. Registration is not needed for this event, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR STUFF

Tuesday, May 21 at 2:00 pm In order to maintain the path toward financial security you need to have a plan for those things that could go wrong. There’s no need to dwell on the details of personal finance nightmares—or even the small events that could push you off course—but you do need to be aware that things won’t always go exactly as planned. Join us as Paul R. Daniele, Esq. discusses this topic of protecting your stuff. He will address the need for you to prepare a plan so that your assets are protected for you and your loved ones while making sure that your wishes are honored. Registration is not needed for this program but seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Library will be closed Monday, May 27 for Memorial Day. Colts Neck Library is located at 1 Winthrop Drive in Colts Neck and can be reached at 732.431.5656. All programs are free and open to the public. Be sure to “like” Colts Neck Friends of The Library on Facebook to stay up-to-date with the latest.

‘Friends’ Book Sale Supports Colts Neck Library

Thanks to more than 500 volunteer hours, the Colts Neck Friends of the Library (FOL) held its annual book sale in March and raised more than $2,800 for library programs. FOL was formed 21 years ago this month and at a reception to thank the many volunteers, FOL President Michele Battista told how it all began. “The organization was formed with the goal to build a new library at no cost to the Township. It was deemed ‘The Little Township that Could’ on May 27, 2000 at the formal dedication by Dee Burtnick, (Colts Neck resident and local publisher.)” Former mayor and longtime Township committeeman, Thomas McClintock and his wife, Judy, were the drivers of the effort, donating $50,000 and challenging the community to join them to build a new million-dollar state-of-the-art library without

taxpayer dollars. Grants from the State and County were procured by then Colts Neck Mayor Lillian Burry, and many other large cash donations followed. These are recognized on the library plaque and in the many engraved bricks. Battista also gave an overview of the history of the book sale event, noting, “The book sale was started by Joan Yates in 2001, who [put a price] in each book, which to this day boggles my mind.” The early book sales were an effort by the entire Yates family and several volunteers. Over the years, Battista took the reins and it was transformed in to a larger community effort. This year the sale received many compliments from the visitors, largely due to the extra organizational efforts of Ien Yoe and Bonnie Ng.The FOL voted to end the large annual book sale, and plan to have mini book sales hosted

monthly or at library events. The initial FOL included Thomas McClintock, Art Goodwin, Sal & Mary Barbagallo (Sal was Construction Chair), Lillian & Don Burry, Al Donado, Jill Valentino, Mary Ellen Griffin, Brenda Johnson,John Vig, Ellen Woods, Joan Yates, Arnold Kleeberg, Joe Clark, Donna Galinski, Nathalie Ganley, John Jacoby and many more. Battista concluded, “As much as the FOL changes, it remains on the original path of the founders: to make this library the focal point of the township complex.” Follow Colts Neck Friends of the Library on Facebook.

National Champion Crowned at Oak Hill Academy Oak Hill Academy (OHA) is incredibly proud to announce that 8th grader, Robert Schweikert of Atlantic Highlands, has been named the National Champion in the American Scholastic Achievement League’s Scholastic Challenge 2019. Robert’s score of 95 landed him in first place in the nation. More than 12,000 students took this 100 question online test in February. The test is divided into six sections: Language and Literature, Geography, History, Science, Mathematics, General Knowledge (i.e. food, arts, sports, music, current events, entertainment, mythology, etc.). These topics are not from a specific curriculum, but rather they represent general knowledge. Results are tallied as a school and as individuals. The national average was 55. Individual state winners are announced and only one student is crowned as national champion! Robert is the National Champion and the New Jersey Champion, too! Oak Hill Academy has been participating in this academic contest for eleven years. During that time, we are fortunate to have had three New Jersey state Champions: 2012- Anshul Agarwal; 2016Jake Fradkin; 2018-Alex Mitchell.

The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders announced the first, second, and third place winners of the Monmouth County Recycling Essay Contest to write a story about and name the first-ever Monmouth County Recycling Mascot. “The creativity of all of the students who entered this essay contest was absolutely incredible,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the Monmouth County Recycling Division. “It was really hard to narrow all of the essays down to pick out the top three and every single student who entered should be very proud of the great work that they did.” The three fourth-grade students were presented with their awards at the regular freeholder meeting held in April. First place was awarded to Kiernan Turbitt of St. Leo the Great School in Lincroft. Kiernan wrote a story about Recycling Rocky and the “Environmental Buddies” and how they helped recycle a sad soda bottle and turned him into a happy blue thermos. Second place was awarded to Sophia Marie Kurdes of Shrewsbury Boro School. Third place was awarded to Kelsey Kalemba of Brielle Elementary School. “We have big plans for Recycling Rocky! So, make sure to stay tuned and follow Monmouth County Government on Facebook and Twitter to follow Rocky’s journey,” added Freeholder Director Arnone.
