This is why it’s very important that you align yourself with the right agent. That agent should be someone that has experience, and more importantly experience in this market! This is not an easy market to navigate for buyers or sellers.

I have the experience and I know what it takes to get YOUR HOME (whether buying or selling) to the closing table.

Meet Your Neighbor: Erika Schaefer

A

BY CATHY PADILLA

s someone who has spent her career working with nonprofits and focusing on fundraising and marketing, the new Executive Director of Monmouth Museum knows the work and dedication it takes to keep an organization growing and thriving. With exciting programs in the works, and a renovation nearly complete, her immediate goal is reopening and welcoming visitors back by early June. A resident of Colts Neck where she lives with her two daughters, Maddy, 16, and Violet, 11, meet your neighbor Erika Schaefer. CM: Why did you choose to become the Executive Director of the Monmouth Museum? Erika: I’ve had a unique career path leading me to the Museum. I worked in nonprofits my whole career, with a focus on fundraising and marketing. Recent positions include many years as Chief Development Officer for Eden II Programs, an autism agency based in NY, and Vice President of Development and Marketing for Richmond University Medical Center, one of two hospitals on Staten Island. I am a lifelong artist, so while I wasn’t looking to make a move, the opportunity to merge my passion with my work experience near home seemed like a perfect fit, and it is. CM: What’s new at the Museum? Erika: In a time when businesses and nonprofits are struggling to survive, the Museum has been resilient, adapting to the new normal as best as possible. We’ve launched virtual galleries, virtual artist talks, and I’m even hosting a podcast series with NJ artists. We’ve taken the time of our closure and turned it into an opportunity, as the Becker Wing was in desperate need of renovations. The space has been completely renovated and exhibits are being reimagined. The focus of Becker Wing is now deeply rooted in the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), inspiring children of all ages, sparking curiosity and imagination. Every section of the new wing connects to Monmouth County. From fossils and dinosaurs, to our environment and its protection and preservation. We are also excited to debut our new Center for Air & Space, taking visitors from the beginning of flight, through space and beyond. Throughout, we highlight pioneers of STEM from New Jersey as our “Hometown Heroes.” Our Center for Air & Space Hometown Hero is NJ native Garrett Reisman, an accomplished NASA Astronaut and Senior Advisor at SpaceX. The message is simple, but strong, you can be just a Jersey kid one day and in space 16

changing the world the next. While the Becker Wing won’t open in June, it’s grand reopening is coming soon. CM: What are your goals for the Museum? Erika: My focus is on the short-term goal of reopening safely. I’m pleased to share that on June 5, we will begin welcoming visitors back to our two art galleries and our beloved Wonder Wing for children. We are launching a new system with timed entry and online reservations, as well as digital memberships. I am hopeful that this, along with other safety precautions put in place, will allow our visitors to have access to art and culture at the Museum once again. We’ve missed you all! CM: What is the most rewarding part of your career? Erika: Being able to make a difference. Recently, the Museum was awarded the Impact 100 Jersey Coast grant for a project called Making Art Possible. Every week, I teach an art workshop for 110 participants (seniors and adults) with the Arc of Monmouth. The consistent creative outlet has been transformational for seniors and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The artwork is being collected and will culminate with an exhibit at the Museum this holiday season, showcasing their art and talent, while building acceptance and challenging societal perceptions of people with special needs.

CM: Would you like to share about your daughters? Erika: Maddy is an accomplished guitarist, singer, and songwriter, even at just 16. Violet enjoys horseback riding. She has won medals at the New Jersey HRH Special Olympics. I’m very proud of both of my daughters. CM: What is your best life or business tip to share? Erika: Always have a mentor. Identify people that possess qualities in life or business that you see as motivational or that you admire. As you “collect” mentors through the years, you’ve built the board of directors for your life. It’s kind of like a vision board but with people. CM: Do you have a favorite quote or mantra? Erika: I have a lot of favorite quotes! One that I certainly live by is by anthropologist, Margaret Mead - “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” CM: Is there anything specifically you would like our readers to know? Erika: I’d like readers to know they don’t have to travel far from home for a great museum or cultural experience. The Monmouth Museum showcases the work of extremely talented visual artists, with exhibits changing often throughout the year.

Photo: Monmouth Museum Executive Director Erika Schaefer Artwork by Arlene Mollow entitled "November 4, 1938" is part of the upcoming exhibit opening June 5.

Breaking Records

Colts Neck’s Cole Tucker BY SUSAN MURPHY Eighteen-year-old Cole Tucker, a Colts Neck High School senior, is now the best shot-put thrower in Colts Neck history, and he ranks #6 all time in New Jersey indoor history. Tucker placed first at the Shore Conference Indoor Track & Field Tournament in Toms River in March with a recorded mark of 65 feet 4 inches. “I went crazy. I was so excited that I don’t think I can remember what was going through my head at the time,” said Tucker. The senior shared that his interest in shot-put throwing started in eighth grade. “Some of my friends were doing it and I thought it would be fun to try it out. I was able to accomplish this by not taking any training days for granted and trying to get better every day. The pandemic made it harder because we were not allowed to have team practices at the school so if you wanted to get better you had to go out and do it for yourself and by yourself.” Tucker worked with Coach Lykes for three seasons at Colts Neck High School, and outdoor throwing coach Dennis Bruck. “Cole is an unbelievable young man. He came in as a freshman, worked hard, was dedicated, and believed in himself,” said Bruck. “He is a leader in the classroom; a leader in the school; and a leader on the team.” Tucker also works with Jon Kalnas, a private Track and Field coach and personal trainer. He co-owns Critical Mass GYM where Tucker trains two to four days a week after his high school practice. “I started working with Cole his sophomore year,” noted Kalnas. “Cole is athletic, but like all teenagers, needed to direct his energies to a discipline. Throwing was it. I provide technique support, programming and some psychological guidance. As Cole got older, and could handle it, I gave him more.” Heading to Boston University in the fall, Tucker said, “I want to be an NCAA champion one day and hopefully to continue having fun throwing. I appreciate all the support from my family, friends, teammates, and coaches who have helped me get to this point.”

Holmdel Mayor’s Update Holmdel Township welcomed spring with a busy schedule of events and programs. During the weeks leading up to Easter, the Township Committee hosted an Easter Donation Drive, collecting frozen hams and turkeys as well as grocery store gift cards. I want to say how grateful I am to the members of the Holmdel community who participated in this program. Because of their generosity, we were able to make a significant contribution to Fulfill. The Mayor’s Community Clean-up Day took place in April. Residents turned out from all over the Township to help pick up rubbish and beautify our community. I want to thank everyone who participated in this important day of service.

18 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE & OVER $170 MILLION IN CLOSED REAL ESTATE.... AND GROWING

The Alexander Ching Memorial Dog Park is now complete, and we look forward to cutting the ribbon and officially opening this park in the coming weeks. The Township is grateful to the family of Alex Ching for their vision and perseverance and to the contractors, Twin Resources, for donating their time and materials to make this wonderful park a reality. Holmdel’s Vaccine Accommodation Program has helped hundreds of our residents obtain an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine. In particular, this program has connected nearly 15% of our senior population with a vaccine appointment. This was only possible due to partnerships with the Visiting Nurses Association and Bayshore Medical Center for which the Township is very grateful. As we move into the summer months, I look forward to life returning to some semblance of normal. I encourage all our residents to stay safe and, as always, I thank you for helping to move Holmdel Forward! Greg Buontempo Mayor of Holmdel

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

Decisions… Decisions I’ve always been impressed and interested in people that have reached the top of their game regardless of their field of endeavor or purpose – friends, entrepreneurs, athletes, etc. I’ve noticed a common thread that I envy and respect – the ability to make better decisions faster than anyone else. How and why are some people gifted to make decisions rapidly and stick to them, and some are not? Picture a typical Saturday in any kitchen across America. What do you feel like for dinner? I don’t know, what do YOU feel like? It really doesn’t matter me, (pause) you decide (longer pause). What are you in the mood for?” UGH! Sound familiar? Something as easy as meal selection are windows of indecision. Why? Because there is risk in making a decision. Maybe the restaurant you choose or the meal that you pick will fall short, and you’ll be on the hook for the sub-optimal choice. It also requires you to prioritize and make an imaginary list in your mind; sort that list, analyze pros and cons, and decide. This, all in the matter of a few seconds. It is interesting that the ability to take on risk and prioritize are keys to life’s decisions. Even when a decision is made, we tend to minimize the risk like ordering the same Chinese food pretty much every time or the same toppings on your pizza and from the same restaurant. Perfect is the Enemy of Good. At 20-something, fresh out of school, my first mentor told me, “Greg, sometimes good enough is perfect.” He meant that when you seek perfection, you waste time. Sometimes you just have to make a call and say, “it’s better to be decisive and move on” - over analysis paralysis. In life nothing is 100%! Once you start hitting 70%, 80%, you need to release. You only need to bat .333 to get into the Hall of Fame. There are no perfect plans and no perfect decisions; make educated choices, adapt, pivot, overcome, and move on. Be More Confident. All decisions have a cost associated with them. Usually what holds us back is either fear, or a lack of information. Get the data you need, and never fear betting on yourself. Ask whether your hesitation is due to fear (of being wrong or loss of money) or anxiety (not feeling prepared or capable). It’s necessary and okay to make mistakes. Learn from each and don’t make that mistake again. These mistakes give you experience, allowing you to build true confidence. So take on that thing you were procrastinating – be confident! Burn your boats.

Set Your Foundation. Spend some time figuring out your basic decision building blocks – your fundamental moral value system. After you have a clear vision, all smaller decisions should follow these building blocks. Each decision you make is either towards or away from that vison. We all take steps backward and make mistakes; these are important lessons we needed to learn in order to achieve your vision. Take Some Time (Seriously). The speed of the world today often makes us feel the pressure to make a decision faster than we should. You’ll experience a great deal of respect and understanding from people when you say: “You will have my answer when I am ready.” I don’t mean shelve it, but don’t create (self-imposed) urgencies that don’t exist. Don’t procrastinate but …… Make Big Decisions in 10 Minutes. The quick & nimble always go with gut instinct on decisions, and move rapidly when they see an opportunity. Although sometimes it could look like they jump out of the airplane and figure out how to build their parachute on the way down. Let past experiences and gut instinct together allow you to gauge the risk and decide to go for it or walk away. I rarely sleep on a decision (otherwise I won’t sleep). Someone once told me “give yourself a deadline of 5 to 10 minutes to process the outcomes”, then evaluate what might be the best possible outcome and what is the worst thing that could happen. Ask yourself, “Can I live with either?” If yes, move quickly. If no, walk away. Make a decision and sink or swim with the ship. Burn the ships at sea and do what you have to do to see your decision through. No one likes wishywashy. Speed is power! What’s the worst thing that can happen? Whatever that is, you’ll deal with it. Indecision is like hiccups. It’s distracting and slows you down. But unlike the hiccups, it’s within your power to eliminate that annoyance. Always fall forward, streaming past life’s boulders that look to slow you down; adopting an attitude of decisiveness will make that possible. Stop trying to not make mistakes. Make them, learn and smash those boulders. - Greg

ing it out now. We want to bring on more open-minded folks of all stripes and backgrounds to join us. We also want to help advisors who are looking to partner with a firm that can provide them additional backend resources so they can really focus on their client relationships. The most challenging part of what I do:

BEYOND THE BRAND:

River’s Edge Wealth Partners

W

hen Anthony “Tony” Frigoletto decided to start his wealth management company, he took inspiration from the Navesink River. Like a river, Tony believes one’s financial life can often have twists and turns, but if a plan is in place, and preparations are made for the turns, the currents can bring one to his or her desired destination. Choosing Red Bank as the home for River’s Edge Wealth Partners seemed the obvious choice, and since September 2020 Tony and his team have inhabited the old Mechanic Street School in a newly renovated and modern office. As the Managing Partner and Owner of River’s Edge Wealth Partners (REWP), Tony splits his time between his homes in Colts Neck and Milanville, PA where he grew up. He and his wife, Nicole “Nikki” Adler-Frigoletto, moved to Colts Neck in 2018 from Morganville. Nikki works with Tony as the Director of Planning at REWP and they have made a blended family together with Marisa, 24, A.J., 23, Penny, 8, and Agnes, 2. The family also has a Golden Doodle named Louie. What my business is about: We are a

wealth management business helping our clients throughout their entire financial journey, taking care of all of their family’s needs. We specialize in Retirement Planning, Estate Planning, Succession Planning, working with the rising generation, and tax strategies. We work with clients’ attorneys and accountants to quarterback one unified front where the client is in the center.

Why I chose wealth management: In

many ways the business chose me. I entered wealth management with an interest in investments and found my passion in building a true partnership with clients. There is a certain amount of trust and intimacy that is needed to best serve a client’s needs. I facilitate conversations where everything is on the table, which enables us to do in-depth analysis and present our clients with a living document that can be used as a road map into the future. Like most plans, there are unexpected events that are out of our control, but in real time we can tweak and adjust both good and bad events to see the effects on the plan.

What sets us apart from others doing what we do: Duty. Loyalty. Effort. Affec-

tion. We are a likeminded team that wants to be there in any way possible to help our clients. From the mundane to the most complex issues, we own it. Each person on this team, Sheila our Office Manager, Shannon or Jay our licensed client associates, Nikki our Director of Planning, Jayeeta our Vice-President, or Brian Giesen our Director of Investments, all knows who we serve and why. The most rewarding part of what I do:

For me, seeing clients achieve their goals, having plans they are close to and that allow them to just live in an exhaled state as it pertains to their financial independence. My next business goal: Expansion! We just took the space next to us and are build-

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

If you believe (like I do) in long term investing, the efficiency of markets and the predictability of supply and demand, then this job is about right sizing clients with portfolios and strategies to help them achieve their goals. The challenge at times is getting the client to believe the same thing. Events, the media, water cooler chatter, or politics can make clients suspicious. Our job is to help clients see what is in front of them and to stick to a plan while avoiding distractions.

Why my parents most influenced my career: My mother and father taught me

and my three brothers the meaning of hard work and sacrifice. When I was young, about 12, I had my first job milking cows before and after school every day. I milked about 45 -55 cows each day with the farm’s owner, Mr. Koberlein, a decorated WWII veteran who fought at the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he used the GI grant to buy land and a farm and started a dairy farm. As a young boy I would ride my bike the one mile with a flashlight my dad mounted to it in the early morning. Over time Mr. Koberlein gave me more and more responsibility and eventually I was milking cows on my own and running equipment. Each Friday I would get paid, and he would ask me how much of the money I would be depositing at the bank. He was smart and had a love of the stock market. He would follow the stocks he owned in the WSJ and the local newspaper. He, along with my mother and father, taught me the meaning and joy of hard work. To this day I still get a sense of satisfaction feeling tired after a long, productive day at work.

What I do when I’m not working: Wheth-

er in PA or in NJ I love sharing my life with my wife and colleague, Nikki, and our whole family. I enjoy working around the property in PA and tinkering in the garden. I look forward to golf season and have gotten back into tennis and am loving it. Securities and advisory services offered through LPL Financial, a registered investment advisor. Member FINRA/SIPC.

Animals have a friend in

Ross Licitra BY: LILIANN PARAS | PHOTOS: CARMEL A CARACAPPA

“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” - Immanuel Kant

Philosopher Kant surely would have looked kindly upon Ross Licitra, a big-hearted champion for the welfare of animals who has become a formidable force in saving animals and bringing their human abusers to justice. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Monmouth County SPCA (MCSPCA), one of the most respected and innovative animal welfare agencies in the state. His path to this position followed a natural progression. A lifelong resident of Monmouth County, Ross has cared for and about animals starting when he was a child and continuing to this day. Throughout his 30-year career in law enforcement, (25 years with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and 5 years as a police officer), Ross maintained a solid partnership with the MCSPCA and local animal control officers, and his reputation grew in the animal welfare community. When he retired, it is not surprising that the MCSPCA tapped him for the position of Chief of Humane Law Enforcement and Ross accepted. “I decided this was a unique opportunity that would bring two of my life passions together - Law Enforcement and Animal Welfare,” he explained. Several months later, Ross also took on the role of Executive Director at the organization. He remained in both positions until last December, at which time he became a Monmouth County Commissioner and stepped down as Chief of Humane Law Enforcement. He continues in the Executive Director role at the shelter. His care for animals does not end at the shelter’s door. Ross incorporates animal welfare into his personal life, too. He lives on his rescue farm with his wife Heather, his 15-year-old daughter, Gianna, his 11-year-old son, Frank, four dogs, eight cats, four goats, two horses, and one pig. CM met with Ross Licitra to learn more about his personal journey, the shelter, and the MCSPCA staff and hundreds of volunteers who work tirelessly to end animal cruelty.

health and release it. From that day I realized that the MCSPCA needed help with farm animals and wildlife, so my love of rescue animals began. I started acquiring and rescuing animals to bring them back to my home in Eatontown. Of course, I was violating all the Borough Ordinances in town (not a good idea, especially being in the Prosecutor’s Office) so I decided to purchase a farm in Marlboro Township to continue helping the MCSPCA and local animal control officers. When I sold my home in Eatontown, I donated many household items to the MCSPCA thrift shop and when I dropped everything off, I left with a goat that was found running around the City of Long Branch.

CM: When did you first realize you had an affinity for animal welfare? Ross: I have always loved animals and grew up having dogs. I visited the MCSPCA many times as a kid, especially since I grew up in Eatontown. I remember a day when I was leaving the Narcotics Office in Freehold and noticed a baby rabbit that was in distress; I decided to take it to my home in Eatontown, nurse it back to

CM: How is the MCSPCA different from other animal welfare organizations? Ross: The MCSPCA is in its 75th year and is very different than any other animal welfare organization in New Jersey. As a matter of fact, the NJ State Legislature recently changed the entire law pertaining to the SPCA and modeled the new law after the MCSPCA. It is the Law Enforcement arm of the Monmouth Coun-

ty Prosecutor’s Office, investigating all animal cruelty complaints throughout the county. We have nearly 100 employees and more than 400 volunteers. We have a beautiful 25,000 square foot shelter that houses nearly 400 animals, and our Homeward Bound Adoption Center adopts out an average of 65 animals per week. We have a full-service veterinary center called the Vogel Veterinary Care Center (VVCC) that is currently open to the public. The VVCC does more than 5,000 surgeries and more than 4,000 clinical visits annually. CM: Is there a particular rescue story that stands out? Ross: The one rescue story that will always stand out in my mind is the Howell Township dog hoarding case in 2016. We rescued 274 dogs from an average-sized home, which took almost 12 hours with a full team. After all was said and done, the total count after all the births from the pregnant dogs, was over 340 dogs. We were able to save all but 6 dogs from this case. It was, and still remains, the largest hoarding case in the State of New Jersey.

CM: What programs have been initiated through the MCSPCA? Ross: I am proud to say the MCSPCA has the largest and most effective Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program in the State of New Jersey which addresses the feral/community cat issue. Last year, the MCSPCA TNR’ed more than 2,700 cats within the county in partnership with 15 municipalities that financially contributed to the program. The program has made a significant impact on the overpopulation of feral/community cats. The MCSPCA recently engaged in a program with two of our local police departments by helping place them with a shelter dog. The adopted dog serves as an emotional support animal for the officers within the department. This program not only offers much needed support to our police officers but provides a loving environment for a homeless shelter dog. CM: What are some of the challenges facing the organization? Ross: We are one of the largest, full-service veterinary centers in Monmouth County, operating at a much lower cost point to serve the public. Any profit that is generated from the VVCC is directly applied to the shelter animals and their med-

36

ical needs, which is a great expense. The MCSPCA averages around $800,000 a year in medical expenses for the shelter animals. We have the largest Animal Control and Rescue Division in the county that services the majority of municipalities, and there are Monmouth County animal control officers on duty 24-hours a day, seven days a week. What most of the public does not know is that the MCSPCA is a self-funded authority and receives no government taxed-based funding. Our Development Department (fundraising) works tirelessly on raising money for the daily operations of the MCSPCA, which is approximately 5.5 million dollars annually. A majority of our income is generated from donations and the rest is earned from the services that the MCSPCA performs and charges for. CM: How has the pandemic impacted the animals? Ross: COVID-19 certainly impacted the shelter and the animal welfare community across the board, but mostly in a positive way. Many shelters, including the MCSPCA, saw a record number of people showing interest in adopting animals. People were forced to stay home because of the pandemic and found this to be the perfect opportunity to add a pet to their household. We also saw an uptick of people visiting our veterinary center for routine and follow-up veterinary care. We attributed the increase in appointments to pet owners being home from work and taking the time to catch up with the care that their animals needed. CM: What does the adoption process entail? Ross: Our adoption process requires all applicants to fill out a survey and then meet with an adoption counselor. Our counselors are uniquely trained to help make the perfect match between our shel-

ter animals and prospective adopters. CM: Is there pending legislation that the MCSPCA supports? Ross: We support pending legislation known as River’s Law, S-3453. This law was introduced by Senator Declan O’Scanlon and would allow prosecutors to charge certain animal abusers with an escalated second-degree crime. This proposed law is in response to a MCSPCA law enforcement case (my case) where a dog was left in a cage to drown in the rising tide of the Sandy Hook Bay. The defendant did this in retaliation against the dog’s owner with whom the defendant was involved in a domestic violence dispute. CM: Tell us about your home rescue farm. Ross: My farm in Marlboro Township is a small hobby farm where I care for an array of farm animals and domesticated animals. Most of our animals have been lost or abandoned and the farm has seen many animals come and go over the years. At one point I had nearly 20 farm animals on the property. The care and medical needs of the animals are covered by me and I do not accept donations. I know what I can handle, and I am careful not to exceed that, so that each animal always has everything they need without question. I grow my own hay in partnership with Hanaway Farms (John Croddick) who has always been very supportive of the rescue mission. CM: What interests do you have outside your work with animals? Ross: My interest, outside of the MCSPCA, is in the political arena. I am currently a Monmouth County Commissioner serving a three-year term. The County Commissioners oversee all county operations and manage a budget of nearly $450 million dollars. Personally, I enjoy furniture building along with antique restoration as well as being a tractor enthusiast. CM: Favorite quote? Ross: “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” – Abraham Lincoln

"And Justice for All" Each year New Jersey attorneys are required by the Supreme Court to earn substantial credits in Continuing Legal Education to maintain their licenses to practice law. This year the court has increased the number of required credits and mandated that at least two hours of coursework be in the area of diversity, inclusion, and the elimination of bias. The Supreme Court concluded that New Jersey’s court system serves an ever expanding and more diverse population and that biases, whether explicit or implicit, i.e., unconscious, can have a profound impact on the ability of the system to provide equal justice to all who come before it. The court acknowledged that all human beings possess and are victims of biases, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, or physical attributes. The new requirement is intended to arm New Jersey lawyers with the tools necessary to search for and recognize their personal biases and address them in ways that

will eventually eliminate them in their dealings with judges, court personnel, the public, and each other. Judges, court personnel, and administrators undergo similar training. The goal is to create a more welcoming inclusive institution. When participants in the judicial system perceive they are being treated fairly, public confidence in the system grows and, eventually, leads to a higher level of public legitimacy. For our public institutions to be effective, they must have the confidence of the public. To gain that confidence, people, no matter their position, must be treated fairly and must perceive that they were treated fairly. Course materials cover personal biases. Explicit biases are those about which we are aware. They are more easily recognizable and more readily addressed. Unconscious biases present a trickier problem. These are biases we often don’t even know we have. Tools we can employ for self-examination are provided in this training.

Vigilance and periodic self-reflection are required to check our personal bias inventory so we can address and eliminate them in our conduct within the judicial system. The goal is noble. And New Jersey lawyers have generally approached this new requirement with enthusiasm. Self-examination is a useful skill. No one is free of bias. It is a human frailty. It, in itself, is not something to be ashamed of. Not doing something about it is. Thus, whether one is required to take a course to maintain a law license or not, a recognition that everyone in our diverse society is entitled to the same dignity and equal treatment we all expect for ourselves requires each of us to periodically take stock and address our failings. That is not a sign of weakness. It is, in fact, a measure of a person’s strength. It is, after all, a big step toward living by the Golden Rule. It’s as simple as that.

You’ve been working from home for several months and now your dog won’t leave you alone. Like, ever. And while you adore the slobbery kisses and late-night cuddles, sometimes you just have to stay focused on something other than those puppy dog eyes. Trust us, we know how difficult it can be to not spoil your pet constantly. But when it’s time to go back to the office, your dog may have difficulties adjusting to life without you home 24/7. When is the attention considered normal affection versus an unhealthy codependency? Occasional crying or mischief is to be expected. After all, most dogs are hyper and playful by nature. Still, there are several signs and behaviors to look out for when it may be something more serious than normal canine behavior. If you notice stressful or destructive behaviors such as: tears in the furniture or household items, frequent accidents, excessive howling when you leave, or uncontrolled drooling and panting, then your dog may have developed what’s called separation anxiety. It’s a term that many of us have heard (and maybe joked about), but it can be a serious condition if left untreated. The American Kennel Club classifies puppy separation anxiety as “when your dog exhibits extreme stress from the time you leave him alone until you return.” Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. has compared this to a panic attack for dogs. So how do we help our fur babies overcome this anxiety? With the proper education, of course. In addition to developing positive associations while you’re gone by leaving treats around the house or plenty of toys to play with, professional training can make a huge difference in your dog’s mental health and behavior. Personalized dog training and care that provides affectionate interaction and play can be the key to effective training, including a focus on positive reinforcement, praise, and, of course, the occasional treat. Considering a doggy daycare, may be a good idea. There your dog will be walked and worked throughout the day all while building a wonderful, trusting rapport with a trainer and interacting with other dogs. This can be especially beneficial if your dog has gotten used to human interaction throughout the day since you’ve been working from home. When it is finally time to return to work in person, you can have peace of mind knowing your dog will spend the day exercising, learning, and having fun. Your dog will build social skills, as well as gain independence and structure while you settle back into office life. By the time you pick them up, they’ll be tuckered out and ready for cuddles when they get home. So, get ready for even more slobbery kisses, because your pooch will thank you. After all, you are the ulti-mutt dog parent.

ASK THE EXPERT – TOM CONNORS Key Questions For Sellers

Is the highest offer always the best? Not always, as you must look at the conditions: Is it a cash deal, what percent is financed, is there a home sale contingency, are buyers waiving inspections, appraisal, and/or mortgage commitment? What does waiving appraisal really mean? If your home is selling at a contracted price of $750,000 but only appraises for $700,000 the buyer must make up the difference. Do they have the available funds?

What is the right listing price? Review current market data for the past 90 days or less (closed & under contract) to accurately price your home. What are sellers responsible for in regard to permits / certificate of occupancy? Sellers are responsible for certificate of occupancy and fire certification unless otherwise noted. All permits must be verified closed with the Township. What does waving inspections mean? It means the inspection is done for informational purposes only. The buyers will not receive remediation from the sellers. This must be noted in the contract. Some buyers will not waive structural, environmental inspections such as mold and radon. What is an average time frame to close? The average closing is around 60 days, cash transactions can close in about 3 weeks. What are sellers closing costs? Sellers are responsible for realty transfer tax which varies on the price of the home, attorney fees, commissions, filing fees, certificate of occupancy. How do you get the best offer for your home? Work closely with a knowledgeable, respected local Realtor that has experience and understands your specific situation and expectations. A conversation with your financial advisor and/or attorney is also advisable.

Summer Safety for Pets Summer is just around the corner! For some pet owners, summer means taking advantage of warm weather and enjoying the local outdoors with their furry friend. Whether you have fun in the sun near your home or head out for an adventure, our summer safety tips will ensure you and your furry companion don’t run into danger.

Preventing Heatstroke in Your Pet

it’s almost M M ER! U S

Heatstroke is a common summertime emergency and occurs when a pet’s body temperature rises above 102 degrees. Heatstroke is a dangerous situation and can be deadly if not recognized and corrected immediately. Common scenarios that lead to heatstroke include: • • • • • •

Leaving your pet outside for a long time in high heat or humidity Leaving your pet outside without ample drinking water Failing to provide shady areas for your pet to escape the hot sun Overexerting your pet on long walks or a run in hot weather Leaving your pet inside a non-air conditioned home on hot days Leaving your pet in a vehicle on warm or sunny days

Pets cannot cool themselves as well as people, because they have only a few sweat glands on their feet, and they rely on evaporation from their mouth surfaces as they pant. Since they also have a thick hair coat, pets are often hot long before their two-legged companions start to feel uncomfortable. Pets with heatstroke can quickly begin acting abnormally, and will display signs that may include: • • • • • • •

Panting Salivation Vomiting Diarrhea, with or without blood Lack of coordination Collapse Seizures

If you think your pet may have heatstroke, take him inside to a cool place and offer him a drink of water. Place cool, wet towels over his body, but never submerge him in water or use cold water to bring his temperature down, as rapid temperature changes can cause his blood pressure to suddenly drop. If your pet does not improve in 10 minutes or is unresponsive, take him to a veterinarian immediately.

Planning for a Summer Road Trip with Your Pet Some dogs love car trips, while others find the car intimidating, especially if their only rides have been to the vet’s office or the groomer. Anxious pets often feel more relaxed if they are not given free rein in the car. A crate provides a safe place for a small pet to curl up and sleep comfortably, while bigger dogs may enjoy looking out the window from the passenger seat while safely harnessed. Never allow your dog to ride with his head hanging out of the window—his face or eyes can be hit by flying debris, or he could try to jump out, with disastrous results. As you pack your bags, don’t forget to also pack your pet’s necessities, including: • • • • • •

A supply of your pet’s normal food to last the duration of the trip Bottled water for the car ride Food and water bowls A leash Favorite toys or stuffed animals Plastic bags, to pick up after bathroom breaks

Whether you choose to enjoy the great outdoors close to your home or you decide to travel, including your pet can make your summer more enjoyable. If you have questions about how to safely include your pet in your summer plans, contact us or your family veterinarian.

Saint Leo the Great School Teacher Helping Local Community

Saint Leo the Great Second Grade students with teacher and founder of Angels Sharing Boxes charity, Bridget Matthews.

Aware that everyone needs help sometimes but hesitant or embarrassed to ask, Saint Leo the Great second grade teacher Bridget Mathews started a charity called Angels Sharing Boxes. Inspired by Mother Teresa’s saying, “Together we can do great things,” Matthews and her students have placed two Angels Sharing Boxes full of donated non-perishable food items in Lincroft located outside of Silver Tulip Florist and on the grounds of Saint Leo the Great Church, dedicated to the memory of Saint Leo the Great School alumnus, Kevin Kret. “The idea behind this charity is to take what you need and give when you can,” explained Mathews. “Everyone needs help occasionally and some people might not know where to get help, not qualify, or just be embarrassed to ask. Our hope is that people will adopt boxes and there will be boxes all over to help people in need.” Leading up to Easter, Matthews’ students chose to practice almsgiving by collecting new socks for the Saint Leo Church Youth Group, donating clothes for Goodwill, and collecting food for the Angels Sharing Boxes. “Thanks to the generous support of the second-grade families, gently worn coats, clothes, and pairs of socks were collected,” said Lori Quagliato, second grade paraprofessional. “There were enough canned goods and food items collected to fill both boxes. Matthew’s vision of discreetly helping community members in need is now a reality.” The general public is invited to participate in the Angels Sharing Boxes as a donor or recipient. Information on community services available to the public can also be found in the boxes. For more information, email anglessharingboxes@gmail.com.

Garden State Film Festival Hosts First Hybrid Event Screens 300+ Films to 585K Viewers

(L to R) Vice Chair Heather Brittain O’Scanlon, Board Secretary Stephanie Clineman, Founder Diane Raver, Director of Operations Kristen Dirato, Daniel Baldwin, Executive Director Lauren Concar Sheehy, Avis & Finley Baldwin. For its 19th iteration, the Garden State Film Festival (GSFF) presented more than 300 independent films to 585,000+ viewers globally, with the first hybrid event including in-person events as well as connecting to film lovers virtually through dynamic digital streaming in light of the global COVID-19 crisis. The festival, which typically draws more than 25,000 attendees to Asbury Park, screens local, national, and international movies. GSFF brings in the latest indie films, and in 2021, its filmmakers were able to reach film lovers all over the world. Fans who participated in an unprecedented four-day livestream event on their computers, tablets, and mobile phones found the perfect antidote to a pandemic-weary world thanks to streaming hundreds of feature-length films, shorts, documentaries, animation, student films, premieres, and more top-quality cinematic showmanship right at their homes. Fans even had a chance to interact with the filmmakers virtually on talkbacks on Facebook. GSFF conducted pre-event interviews, happy hours, and one-on-one interactions to connect to filmmakers before they arrived in Asbury Park. In addition, GSFF plays a vital part in educating and showcasing the next generation of filmmakers and had more than 48 high school

films screening. GSFF’s 2021 hybrid event blended numerous live screenings with a rich virtual platform. In-person events included a Friday night cocktail gala, a closing night awards presentation, and live events with a screening at the Cranford Theater. GSFF Executive Director and filmmaker Lauren Concar Sheehy livestreamed the GSFF Awards Ceremony alongside director Paul Porowski, formerly the news operations manager and producer of Chasing News, camera operators Peter Normandia of Edit Cellar and Sergey Kornienko of Brookdale Television. The awards included the best in various categories of films and celebrity honorees were recognized. To view the list of winners, visit gsff.org. “We continue to reach our legion of filmmakers and fans where they are and understand virtual engagement is not a replacement for a live festival experience,” stated GSFF Executive Director, Lauren Concar Sheehy. “GSFF enjoyed our time with our fans and filmmakers both in person and virtually, and we hope to be back in-person to full capacity in 2022” Save the date for The Garden State Film Festival 20th Anniversary Edition - March 23-27, 2022.

Oak Hill Academy Raised Funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Every spring, Oak Hill Academy participates in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Matha-thon. Upper School Math Teacher Rita Cotterell organized this event that has students volunteering in solving math problems and asking for pledges so they can help kids with cancer and other lifethreatening diseases. All of the funds raised go toward making sure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — “because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.” Oak Hill Academy has been participating in this worthwhile event for more than 25 years. This year, 87 students came together to raise $14,783.23. Special kudos to Donovan (6th grade) and Bette Kane (4th grade) for leading the charge by raising more than $1200, as well as Buddy Levy (6th grade) for raising more than $1100.

George Washington Portrait is Restored in Colts Neck By Susan Murphy Through the generosity of the Colts Neck Township and the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee, a portrait of George Washington that hangs in the Town Hall, has been restored. Chair of the Historical Preservation Committee Lillian Burry noted, “After being informed of the value of the George Washington portrait that has hung in Colts Neck Town Hall for as long as I can remember, I was convinced by Dan Fenski of Windsor Gallery that restoration was warranted.” The portrait that hangs above the fireplace at Colts Neck Town Hall is an unsigned copy of a famous oil on canvas work originally painted in 1806 by Gilbert Stuart titled George Washington at Dorchester Heights, currently housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, noted Dan Fenski of Windsor Gallery. Fenski explained that the painting was created circa mid-late nineteenth century and the gilded American style portrait frame with strap ornament is original to it. The painting was donated to the Township of Colts Neck by George Dittmar Sr. some time ago and at one time was restored by a well-known restorer named Hiram H. Holzer in New York City. Fenski shared, “A great deal has changed concerning conservation methods since then. The previous restorations were reversed. It was cleaned of all aged varnish and emulsion and relined to a stable linen. Areas of loss from previous in-painting were consolidated and retouched. It was re-stretched using its original wooden stretcher bars and a final layer of protective UV stable varnish was applied. The frame was restored and re-gilded to an appropriate finish.”

Colts Neck Township Committee Liaison Frank Rizzuto, County Commissioner and Chair of Historical Preservation Committee Lillian G. Burry, Restorer Dan Fenski, and Colts Neck Mayor Michael Viola.

Organization for Women Educators Donates to No Limits Cafe By Susan Murphy Alpha Iota, a local chapter of the New Jersey Alpha Delta Kappa, recently donated $1,000 to No Limits Cafe in Middletown, a restaurant dedicated to providing employment skills and job opportunities to adults with intellectual difficulties. The group consists of eighteen women from Middletown, Holmdel, and Highlands school districts who meet monthly to share their love of education and their concerns for others in their communities. “These women are dedicated to altruism, and monthly do something small, but special for another organization or individuals in their schools who need some support,” shared Henry Hudson Regional School Principal Lenore M. Kingsmore, the Recording Secretary for Alpha Iota. The group has provided Thanksgiving baskets to several families in need, and provided gift cards at Christmas. Each month Alpha Iota selects an organization, school or group to donate to either through monetary donations or donations of goods or services. If you are interested in joining this group, email Terri Drapczuk, President of Alpha Iota, at td_ldtc@yahoo.com. The group welcomes women educators who are dedicated to service for others and altruism.

Holmdel High School Senior Named 2021 Coca-Cola Scholar Holmdel High School senior, Bill Zhang, is one of 150 national winners of the 33rd annual Coca-Cola Scholars program. According to the Coca-Cola website, this scholarship program received 99,403 applications from high school students across the United States and “only 1/2 of 1% of applicants were chosen to receive this extremely competitive award”. In addition to a monetary scholarship, Bill Zhang will join a prestigious community of scholarship recipients who are currently “a powerful force for positive change in the world”. Since earning the award, Zhang has been networking with other Coca-Cola Scholars and learning about the work in which they are engaged in their communities. He has plans for a project to support the Asian-American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and says that he looks forward to continuing his advocacy of social justice and health equity.

Here few things we have done to ensure safety for everyone who comes intoare ouraoffice:

Holmdel Girl Scouts Isabella Marotta, Eva Merhi and Samantha Salerno, who are from Troop#564, have received the prestigious Silver Award – the highest award a Cadette can earn. By Susan Murphy Three Holmdel Girl Scouts from Troop 564 recently received the highest award that a Cadette can earn. Holmdel High School freshmen and honorees Eva Merhi, Isabella Marotta, and Samantha Salerno received the prestigious Silver Award. To earn their Silver Award, the girls had to create a program that would educate younger children about the dangers of gun violence as well as empower students by teaching about gun safety. Each honoree experienced a realistic gun drill in school. They remember the event vividly and it has stayed with them. Due to each of their experiences with the incident, the girls felt a strong need for change. “It was all a hoax, but what if it hadn’t been?” Eva Merhi wrote in her Silver Award project. “Would I have died that day because someone who shouldn’t have had access to a gun did? I don’t have the answer to those questions, but I do know that stuff like this happens too often. The only difference is that sometimes it isn’t a hoax. People are dying because of others who are irresponsible with guns. Too many kids are killed or injured because of gun violence, and I don’t think that should have to be our reality. I believe kids should be able to go to school, unafraid, and stay safe. I hope in the future that will be the case.” In her Silver Award project write-up, Isabella Marotta shared, “We were lucky enough for the gunman call to have been fake. Had the call been real, many things would have turned out differently. Having this in mind throughout the duration of the project was enough for us to continue with the project.” The Cadettes were hopeful that by creating and presenting a blog and slideshow on this important topic, they could reach, inspire, and inform their generation. “Our project addressed the issue of gun violence and the lack of gun safety being taught to students, despite the drills that we experience in school,” shared Samantha Salerno. “We educated other Girl Scouts about gun safety and statistics to teach them about the things that we aren’t taught in school about guns, such as the commonality of gun threats or the way to interact with a gun if you were to find one.”
