Welcome

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

W

ith the official kick-off to the summer weekend past us now, we look forward to the relaxing days ahead of us. The agreeable weather is the perfect backdrop for the 2013 summer season’s outdoor events and festivals. Our Local Events page has this season’s unique things to do around Monmouth County and our Facebook page keeps you up to date on your area’s happenings on a daily basis at Community Mag NJ. We have two long standing and very local traditions in Colts Neck and Lincroft for June. The annual St. Leo the Great Church Carnival will be held from June 17 through June 22. For over a quarter of a century, the St. Leo’s Carnival has provided family entertainment to surrounding communities, and offer exciting rides, games of chance, freshly prepared foods and the chance to win the Super 50/50 – this year, they promise the best carnival yet. For some good old fashioned country fun, head to the Colts Neck Fair on June 28 and 29 at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. The fair will be featuring family fun, food, entertainment, inflatables, crafts, and of course fireworks – both nights at 10:00 p.m. I would also like to touch on the Oklahoma tornado that happened in late May, this tragedy is a horrible event Mother Nature has dealt our country again. As in most things, something positive has occurred to me, the good people of New Jersey and other states have once again helped each other in a time of need. Oklahoma was there for us in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and now we are paying it forward and helping them out. I see how everything comes full circle, and it is refreshing and heartwarming to know that our nation still stands together. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there,

Earth Day Festival Celebrates

H

undreds of visitors attended the fifteenth annual Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival on April 28 and enjoyed live music, exhibits, entertainment, creating crafts, and a petting zoo. The event takes place each year on the beautiful property of former actress, heiress and philanthropist Laura Harding, and guided tours of her home are given throughout the day. Two huge barns house much of the festivities. Live music played all day by various musicians took place in the Gray Barn. In the Red Barn Deli, lunch, snacks and homemade baked items were on sale, and in a tent nearby, cold drinks were available. In the upper level of the Red Barn, Earth Day posters by students from W. R. Satz and Indian Hill Schools were on display. An informative presentation by Arcadia Parrot Rescues and an exciting show by Rizzo’s Reptile Discovery took place on the grounds beside the Red Barn. Outside the lower level of the Red Barn children were able to make crafts from recyclables or have their faces painted thanks to the Holmdel High School ECO Club and the Girl Scouts. The Farm Friends Petting Zoo was presented by Little Bit Ponies ‘n More. Pet Adoption Network was on hand to discuss their cats and kittens available for families to adopt. Visitors could also see and learn more about the Holmdel “Prohibition” whiskey located inside a section of the barn. Holmdel Police K-9 Team also performed tactical maneuvers during a special presentation.

NEWCOMERS AND NEIGHBORS CLUB

KICK OFF SPRING WITH LUNCHEON STORY SUSAN MURPHY

N

ewcomers and Neighbors Club held their annual Spring Luncheon on May 9 at Nauvoo Grill Club in Fair Haven. When the 54 members and guests arrived, they were able to purchase tickets for a raffle that included such items as a picnic bag and accessories, several pieces of jewelry, and a basket of gift certificates. The grand prize raffle item was a beautiful designer purse. The ladies could also purchase tickets for a 50/50 drawing. During the first hour of the luncheon, they had the opportunity to visit with one another as they also enjoyed a few hor d’ oeuvres. The lunch itself consisted of a large salad followed by their choice of crab cake, steak, or blackened chicken sandwich platter. President Linda Kudler presented flowers to Maggie Osmulski for her long-time service work with the Club. She was Co-President and assisted Sue Quincannon as Event Chair for this Luncheon and numerous other events over the years. Ms. Osmulski has decided to step down from the Board and addressing the group, said, “I just want to let some new people come in and share their ideas.” Flowers were also presented to other members of the Board as a thank you for their dedicated work within the Club.

is upcoming in June. Anyone interested in more information about Newcomers and Neighbors Club, which is open to any new or long time resident of the Monmouth County area, should call 732.526.7648 or 732.530.9543.

Newcomers and Neighbors Board members gather for a picture during their Spring Luncheon held on May 9, 2013 at Nauvoo Grill Club in Fair Haven. Left to right: Standing in back: President Linda Kudler, Linda Orriss, Maggie Osmulski, Gail Wachsmuth, and sitting are Dee Mollina, Helene Kalkay, Andrea Schanzer, Michele Caputi, and Sue Quincannon.

Following the luncheon, the ladies welcomed Flavian, a mind reader who has performed in Las Vegas. Several ladies came up to assist him as he asked questions of those still seated at the tables. The answers were whispered to one of the ladies assisting and Flavian had to guess the answers. His questions included what is the pet name of your spouse, the name of your childhood pet, and the wildest place you ever had romance. He was amazing, and almost always right! The afternoon ended much too soon but the Newcomers and Neighbors Club are already planning their next events. There are opportunities within the Club to attend smaller groups such as the Bunco or Book Group. A Couples Barbecue

WALK4FRIENDS Overwhelming turnout for 2013 Friendship Circle Walk In Holmdel

I

n the true spirit of community, nearly 1,300 people of all ages gathered under sunny skies for the fifth annual Walk4Friends on April 28 at Vonage Corporate Center in Holmdel. The goal of the walk was to raise funds and awareness for the Friendship Circle, a program that provides friendship for children with special needs, but it accomplished much more than its primary mission. “So many parents came over to us during the event to thank us for dedicating a special day to their children,” said Chanale Wolosow, director of The Friendship Circle in Central NJ. “Imagine 1,300 people coming to show their support for your child and your family. The parents were beaming with pride, and the children with special needs were the spotlight of the event.” As Mitch Baum, a parent of a Friendship Circle child living in Marlboro shared, “The Walkathon was an amazing day. It was touching to see how many people came out in support of the Friendship Circle programs. There were so many things for the kids to do in an environment where they -- and their families -- can truly relax and enjoy themselves. I am always touched by the volunteers who are part of Friendship Circle -- they give their own time to put a smile on the face of children who otherwise might not have anyone they could call a “friend”.” Walk4Friends kicked off with an opening ceremony and pep rally, including a group warm-up led by a New York Sports Club Fitness instructor, Vicki Eisen. The one-mile

14

Community Magazine

walk around the Vonage campus was led by the Marlboro High School marching band. After the walk, participants enjoyed great food, rides, games, and a featured show by “Cirque-tacular acrobats”. Among the guests were Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen and Holmdel Mayor Patrick Impreveduto. “The outpouring of love from the community to support the Friendship Circle was truly amazing,” said Mayor Susan Cohen. “So many volunteers give of their time to make this program possible and so many more were responsible for the success of this important event.” Volunteer Alyssa Sperling, a student of Marlboro High School who spoke during the opening ceremony shared ,“Through Friendship Circle, I have learned that the greatest gift one can receive is the gift of giving to others. Sam, my special friend has taught me everything I know about friendship”. Walk4Friends has raised over $130,000 towards their goal of $150,000 needed for Friendship Circle programming. Monies raised go directly to fund the social and recreational programs for children with special needs. You can still make a donation at www.walk4friends. com and help Walk4Friends reach their goal.

T

hroughout the month of May Dr. Kenneth Pierce, Jr., DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVO, the newest member of Garden State Veterinary Specialists team of veterinary specialists has been donating his time providing free, sight-saving eye exams to eligible service animals at GSVS as part of the 6th Annual ACVO & Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event. During this event veterinary ophthalmologists perform free eye exams on service animals.

OPHTHALMOLOGY Diagnostic/ Therapeutic Procedures

Guide dogs, handicapped assistance animals, detection dogs, therapy animals and search and rescue dogs selflessly serve the public. To honor these animals and their work, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) launched its annual event in May to screen service animals who dedicate their lives to serving the public.

During the complete ocular exam, Dr. Pierce utilizes specialized equipment to look for problems including: redness, squinting, cloudy corneas, retinal disease, early cataracts and other serious abnormalities. Early detection and treatment are vital to these working animals. “Our hope is that by checking their vision early and often, we will be able to help a large number of service animals better assist their human friends, says Stacee Daniel, Executive Director of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.

A sampling of groups served since the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event launched in 2008 include: Transportation Security Agency (TSA) and military working dogs from Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, Puppies Behind Bars, an organization providing psychiatric service dogs to soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan, local fire, rescue and police agencies, and also individual service animal owners and handlers who rely on these amazing animals daily.

in the Holmdel/Colts Neck Market Area for 2012

To qualify, animals must be “active working animals” that were certified by a formal training program or organization or are currently enrolled in a formal training program. The certifying organization could be national, regional or local in nature. Owners/agents for the animal(s) must FIRST register the animal via an online registration form beginning in April at www.ACVOeyeexam.org. Once registered online, the owner/agent will receive a registration number and has access to a list of participating ophthalmologists in their area. Then they may contact a specialist to schedule an appointment during the month of May. Dr. Pierce has seen a number of patients under this program who have scheduled appointments with him at GSVS. The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists® is an approved veterinary specialty organization of the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, and is recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Its mission is “to advance the quality of veterinary medicine through certification of veterinarians who demonstrate excellence as specialists in veterinary ophthalmology.” To become board certified, a candidate must complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, a one year internship, a three year approved residency and pass a series of credentials and examinations.

Monmouth County SPCA Fur Ball Attendees Ate, Drank, Played Games and Were Saving Lives with Over $140,000 Raised!

M

ore than 250 guests showed their support for the Monmouth County SPCA at their annual Fur Ball on Saturday April 20, 2013 at iPlay America’s Encore Event Center in Freehold, NJ. The evening broke records, raising over $140,000 for the homeless animals in their care. “It was an amazing evening! Our supporters were so generous and we are thrilled that the success of this year’s Fur Ball will help us save more animals in need,” said MCSPCA Development Director Meghan Rehbein.

Guests embraced the evening’s theme of “Eat, Drink, Play Games, Save Lives” with live music by Jersey Shore favorite Brian Kirk & the Jirks, an open bar, delicious food, a huge candy buffet by Dylan’s Candy Bar, and a highly-anticipated silent and live auction, followed by iPlay games: laser tag, go carts, indoor rides, arcade games and boardwalk fun! This year’s Fur Ball honored Dylan Lauren, Paul Arrouet and their dog Jersey, who was adopted from the MCSPCA in 2012. Dylan Lauren, owner of Dylan’s Candy Bar and daughter of clothing designer Ralph Lauren says, “I am very thankful to the MCSPCA for providing us with such an amazing dog… so I give a lot of time and finances to them when I can. The environment is a happy place- it wasn’t a shelter I felt sad leaving. I feel great knowing that I am giving something back and… I’m proud to say ‘I rescued an animal.”

Corporate Honoree Townsquare Media was also in attendance, with 94.3 The Point’s Lou Russo and Liz Jeressi and WOBM’s Marianne Levy serving as the evening’s emcees. “The annual MCSPCA Fur Ball was fantastic this year! Great people, wonderful auction items, iPlay games and live music, and most importantly, a room full of people who really care about the animals and were so generous with their donations,” said Liz Jeressi. And Lou Russo agreed, “It was an awesome night and even more awesome knowing how many generous people love the animals and want to help them.” MCSPCA Pet Pantry Project, received $33,000 raised, a program that helps families in need keep their beloved pets at home by providing them with food and other pet supplies. More than 400 families are supported through this program each month.

“The Monmouth County SPCA Fur Ball was one of the most heartwarming events I have had the privilege of attending. The generosity of those who attended helped raise in excess of $33k toward the Pet Pantry for all of our gentle, loving creatures. My sister, Mary Ann Larkin and I were so touched that we have decided to bring some of the MCSPCA rescue puppies into our homes and hearts. I encourage everyone to awaken their souls by continuing to support this most worthwhile cause” said longtime MCSPCA supporter Carol Stillwell. To learn more about the Pet Pantry Project, please visit www.monmouthcountyspca.org. None of this success would be possible without the tremendous community support the MCSPCA receives from their many Corporate Sponsors, including Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, Barnside Veterinary Hospital, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, Chris and Laura Nalbandian, Saker ShopRites, 33 East Car Wash, Blackrock, Invest Financial Corporation, Canine Company and Townsquare Media.

T

he residents of Holmdel have once again stepped up to support Keansburg through Holmdel Helps. Committeeman Joseph Ponisi, along with the Holmdel Helps Team had the idea to tie Holmdel’s Annual Mother’s Day flower sale in with an opportunity for residents to donate flowers to mothers in Keansburg. Darlene Kiss from the PSA at Village School made a successful arrangement with DePalma Landscaping to provide reasonably priced flowers for the program. The Township children bought flowers during Holmdel’s recent Community Day for $1.00, decorated a Holmdel Helps label that was then attached to the flower pots to be distributed in Keansburg. Darlene hoped to sell 360 flowers at the event; the kids exceeded that expectation and purchased 377 flowers to be handed out. On the morning of May 8, twenty-seven flats of flowers were delivered to the Port Monmouth Road School in Keansburg. Principal Craig Palmer welcomed Darlene Kiss, Georgette Nelson and Allison Fleck, all members of the Holmdel Helps Team as they unloaded the cars filled with plants. Two second grade students, Faith Hoff and Aiden Flynn were on hand to “inspect” the flowers and by all appearances, they approved. The individual flowerpots each had a personally designed label from the Holmdel Community Day event. A flower was distributed to every child in the school as a gift for their mom on Mother’s Day. This is part of Holmdel’s continuing effort to support their neighbors in Keansburg. Holmdel Helps is committed to helping their neighboring town long-term, and new opportunities to help are right around the corner. Other members of Holmdel Helps include Officer Thomas Foley, Committeeman Thomas Critelli and Mayor Patrick Impreveduto.

Shore Flicks Announces Free Summer Movie Series Schedule port the series and help Jersey Shore residents reconnect.”

S

hore Flicks is excited to announce that a full schedule of free outdoor movies will be returning to the Jersey Shore this summer. The Free Summer Movie Series presented by XFINITY will feature 65 nights of movies in 15 towns throughout Monmouth County plus Long Beach Island.

“In the aftermath of Sandy, we couldn’t be more thrilled about being back on the beaches and in the parks,” said Shore Flicks owner TJ Brustowicz. “Especially in towns that were so directly affected like Sea Bright, Keyport, and Spring Lake.”

Shore Flicks is pleased to welcome Comcast as the title sponsor this summer. “The summer movie series is a natural way to bring the community together, and that’s especially important after an event like Sandy,” said Comcast Regional Vice President of Government Affairs Bill Kettleson. “Comcast is thrilled to sup-

Thanks to generous sponsorships from local businesses, Shore Flicks is able to provide its services at no charge to the towns or the audiences. Sponsors include Comcast, New Jersey Natural Gas, Coldstone Creamery, Red Bank RiverCenter, Lincroft Village Dental Care, Colonial American Bank, Two River Theater Company, Microsoft, Red Bank Flavour, Asbury Park Film Initiative, and Greater Media radio stations WRAT, WJRZ, and WMGQ. This summer’s movie line-up includes ‘80’s favorites like Back to the Future and The Princess Bride, as well as new additions like Madagascar 3 and Brave. The series kicks off June 3 at Veterans Park in Hazlet with the Disney Pixar hit Wreck-it Ralph. Towns participating this summer are Asbury Park, Red Bank, Sea Bright, Spring Lake, Middletown, Atlantic Highlands, Hazlet, Keyport, Fair Haven, Ocean, Eatontown, Oceanport, Matawan, Neptune, Shrewsbury, and Long Beach Island. Movies begin just after sundown and are shown on Shore Flicks’ 16’ inflatable screen. One of the highlights of the 2013 schedule is Shark Week, as the classic Jaws is shown eight straight nights be-

ginning August 18 in Sea Bright. “Jaws on the beach is fast becoming a Jersey Shore tradition,” said Brustowicz. “It will be particularly exciting to return to the ‘scene of the crime’ when we show it in Matawan.” The 1916 shark attacks in Matawan Creek were the inspiration for Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws and the subsequent blockbuster film. As in previous years, each night Shore Flicks will be collecting non-perishable food items to be distributed to food banks and pantries throughout the area. This summer, the Free Summer Movie Series presented by XFINITY will also support two Sandy-related charities, RAINE Foundation and Sea Bright Rising. People are encouraged to follow Shore Flicks on Facebook and Twitter for updates on the movie nights, including cancellations due to weather. Winner of the Asbury Park Press Reader’s Choice Award for Best Free Entertainment in 2011 and 2012, Shore Flicks has been providing the best in outdoor movie entertainment in Monmouth County and throughout New Jersey since 2007. Simple.Childlike. POWERFUL. THE JACK PINTO MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND BRINGS COMFORT TO MANY STORY SUSAN MURPHY

A

n opportunity for a community and a family to begin healing was found in the form of a playground at Fireman’s Park in Union Beach, New Jersey. The community ravaged by a superstorm; the family’s loss of a young son from the senseless violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The Jack Pinto Memorial Playground, located in Fireman’s Park in Union Beach was dedicated on May 4 and attended by the Pinto family - Dean, Trish, and older brother Ben, as well as other family members and several residents of Newtown, Connecticut. The playground, which is the second of 26 such playgrounds to be built along the coast of three states, was the idea of New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (FMBA) President Bill Lavin. The Sandy Ground Project officially titled The Sandy Ground 26, Where Angels Play, will create the playgrounds as living memorials to all children who have been victimized through violence while creating a safe, fun place for them to play. Firefighters, police officers, teachers and support staff, and volunteers will assist in building the playgrounds. Young Jack Pinto, a six-year-old avid Giant’s fan loved the swings, almost as much as he loved Victor Cruz and the Giants. His seventh birthday was May 6, 2013. Jack’s father, Dean, shared his thoughts at the ribboncutting ceremony that opened the playground named in memory of his son. “It is overwhelming for our family to see all of the people here today. We were treated by everyone in Union Beach and the surrounding areas like part of their family, from the first moment we spoke to them.” He paused then continued, “It would be Jack’s seventh birthday on Monday. What a fitting present to give him – a beautiful playground that children will enjoy for years.” The little ones who will enjoy the playground for many years to come will not know that from groundbreaking to the dedication, it only took four weeks to complete the playground. RAINE (Reaching

36

Community Magazine

All In Need Everyday) Foundation Founder Photo Credit Marco Caracappa Patti Dickens expressed her amazement. “I can’t believe we did it!” RAINE, NJFMBA, and Gateway Church of Christ, who led the garden initiative, partnered together and were joined by hundreds of volunteers from the initial March 23 cleanup of the grounds, to the April 5 groundbreaking, and now to the dedication of the Jack Pinto Memorial Playground. NJFMBA President Bill Lavin acknowledged the appearance of two-time Super Bowl Champion Sean Landeta and current Giant David Wilson. He added, “With all due respect to the athletes and Super Bowl Champions, there is one Giant that we need here today – the little boy of a giant, Jack Pinto. Who else but Jack could lift up an entire community like Union Beach that was so devastated by the storm! Jack has touched so many lives.” He noted that Ben Pinto was the honorary foreman and drilled the first holes to begin the project. President Lavin thanked Giordano Construction of Kenilworth, New Jersey, who are the main contractors and will do the work on each of the 26 playgrounds. Toni Giordano and Rich Picerno said they have a long relationship with the NJFMBA. Another long-term partner was Gateway Church of Christ, who arrived in Union Beach just days following Sandy to hand out supplies and offer support. Carl Williamson offered words of comfort at the start of the ceremony. “From the swings to the monkey bars, from the slides to the climbing wall, each part of this playground is designed for healing – Bless this place as one of healing and of new memories. Each of us should swing a swing in memory of Jack.” Patti Dickens told the Pinto family, “The children and leaders of the community here have placed their handprints on a monument to symbolize our commitment to you and to Jack. Know that Jack will

never, ever be forgotten.” She then led the Pinto family to an area behind the playground, where Ben cut the red ribbon and pulled off the cover to reveal a white monument covered in red and blue handprints made by Union Beach children and residents. Nestled atop the monument was a plaque bearing Jack’s own handprint, which had been done as an art project shortly before he died. Below his name and handprint it reads, “We will hold your hand always and your heart forever.” White doves were released and they circled the playground before disappearing into the blue sky. In the midst of the dedication, a white flag with Jack Pinto in red letters was raised, just below a Giants flag. The playground dedication included speeches by dignitaries and presentations of Proclamations and a Resolution. Ben cut other red ribbons to reveal a large sign showing a smiling colorful picture of young Jack, and beside it states, “Celebrating the Life of Jack Pinto Son, Brother, Friend, Hero.” An inscription below that notes that the playground is a gift to the youth “in an effort to enhance and sustain their precious childhood.” At the entrance to the playground ramp, Ben unveiled a blue image of a New York Giants jersey with the words PINTO and below that 80 on it. To the delight of the excited children waiting to try out the entire playground, Ben cut the final ribbon to the entrance and led the happy little ones up the ramp and onto the playset. Ben smiled as children called to him and despite his sadness, it appeared Ben knew his little brother Jack would feel right at home there.

The Colts Neck Reformed Church Nursery School Raises Funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital While Teaching Valuable Riding Safety Tips ST. JUDE TRIKE-A-THON PEDALS IN MUCH NEEDED FUNDS TO HELP FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER

T

hrough the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon, The Colts Neck Reformed Church Nursery School raised funds to support the research and treatment of childhood cancer and other deadly diseases while teaching trike and riding-toy safety tips. The annual fundraiser is a week-long program where kids learn riding safety skills while raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers. On April 25, 2013 kids brought their tricycles and riding toys to school where they practiced the safety rules learned throughout the week.

This year’s course included areas where our students had to stop and look both ways at intersections and also areas where toy cars pulled out in their way to remind them to stay alert. Cadets also help students navigate the course. Sergeant Kristian DeVito, from the Colts Neck Police Department, was also in attendance reviewing bike safety rules with our students.

“This is the 8th year that, The Colts Neck Reformed Church Nursery School has held the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program, said Stacey Savage event coordinator. We are excited to host the program every year because it is a fun activity we can easily incorporate into our existing enrichment programs. Not only did we teach our children valuable safety lessons, we taught them how they could help kids like them who are battling cancer and other deadly diseases.” The Colts Neck Reformed Church Nursery School has raised more than $4000.00 since it began hosting the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon in 2006 An event like this takes a lot of planning and we are fortunate to have many community members who are always willing to help. Students from the Colts Neck High School NJROTC program have been helping make our Trike-A-Thon such a success for the past three years. Colts Neck Troop 290

Springing Into Action

T

his spring has brought a myriad of activities to blossom as Troop 290 continues to flourish. After enjoying winter with a successful ski trip and a snowy weekend at the Obre camping trip, Troop 290 gathered together to start their spring to-do list. For starters, Scouts helped celebrate Arbor Day by assisting the Shade Tree Commission with planting a tree near Colts Neck Town Hall and then helping cleanup around the Children’s Garden. Lists of service projects allowed the Scouts to select and participate in a variety of locations and activities. For starters, a group of Scouts took part in the Walk4Friends, assisting with the 3K walk around the Vonage Building on Route 520. Given that fun and learning go hand-in-hand, Troop 290 set off on an adventure packed weekend to Washington, DC. The Scouts joined Troop 110 of Lincroft as they set camp in Greenbelt, MD. Their events included a tour of Congress, Ford’s Theatre, museums and monuments along the Mall. Sunday morning allowed them time to visit Arlington’s National Cemetery and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport before heading home. One of the highlights this spring was the ceremony of the Order of the Arrow (OA). This ceremony took place in Bucks Mill with the Scouts, leaders, their families and guests. During the ceremony the Scouts walked single file onto a field following two lead Scouts holding torches. The ceremony took place around a bonfire which illuminated the Scouts who would be identified as OA members. The OA is the National Honor Society within scouting; the OA has recognized Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. The closing of the Scout’s activities has been their dedication to continue fundraising for future events. The sale of flowers successfully ended their spring blitz sale by setting up at the Siam/Thai Restaurant on Route 34. These events are just a few that marked the calendar of Troop 290; for more information about Boy Scouting in Colts Neck, log onto www.troop290.com.

Without a doubt one of the more compelling aspects of the furniture installation was the emotionally moving reaction of Mrs. Ruocco. Among the many dignitaries in attendance at the installation were: Walter Kreher, United States Department of Housing and Urban Development – Newark Office; Michael Massood, Chief Executive Officer of Thomasville Home Furnishings of New Jersey; Stephanie Murray, Deputy Mayor of Middletown; Dan Coughlin and Dave Schiro of Coughlin Management; Lois Whittom, Steve Miller, Bill Bellars, Members of the Lincroft Senior Citizens Housing Corporation Board of Directors; Mary Ann Epps and Janice Ochs of Lincroft Senior Citizens Housing Corporation and Patty Forti, Director of Marketing for Thomasville Home Furnishings of New Jersey. Anyone wishing to learn more about the IN TIME OF NEED program can access the JAHMA website (www.jahma.org) and click on the IN TIME OF NEED icon or they can contact Dr. Bruce W. Johnson, the program administrator, at 215.262.4230.

Holmdel Village School Spring Carnival Mur

Susan ry

V

illage Elementary School held their annual PSA-sponsored Spring Carnival on May 17 for students of the school and their siblings. The four hour event was attended by over 500 people and is the major fundraiser of the year for the PSA and Village School. Event Chairs Debbie Brew and Lori Umbrino, along with their Committee members Vin Daniele, Dina D’Ambrosi, Vicki DiBlasi, Darlene Kiss, Dennis Pavlik, Keri Todisco, Laura Bachmann, Tammi Stanziale, Judie Donahue, Purvi Shah, and Lynn Saporito, worked non-stop before, during and after the event. Mrs. Brew, who is Vice President of Fundraising noted that her mother started this Carnival at Indian Hill School years ago. President of the then-known PTA, her mother held the small event in the school’s hallway. “I remember

And now, here I am at Village School in charge of the same Carnival. My mother told me it has improved so much from the arts and crafts event that it used to be,” shared Mrs. Brew. Assisting the Committee and PSA Executive Board members with the games and booths were many high school volunteers. A Karaoke booth was manned by Indian Hill and William R. tume as they performed parts of the play, Annie. A trackless train ride, hair beading and Sand Art were popular. Face Painting Designs by Anita, who grew up in the area returned for yet another year and put beautiful designs on the children’s faces. Booths included Spin to Win, Creature Crunch, and Hoop Shot. The Photo Booth had crazy props of inflatable guitars, oversized glasses, and silly hats. Lines for the outdoor inflatables were constant during the entire Carnival. Party Perfect Rentals, Freehold provided the games and rides, noted Mrs. Brew. Dearborn Markets and the PSA worked together with the food sold, and Dearborn employees stayed all day to cook. The Committee was grateful for their participation. Mrs. Brew said the carnival is constantly changing each year and one thing that has received positive feedback is that only one ticket is needed for food and rides. Pre-paid ticket sales were encouraged and 200 families complied. The Awesome Class Booklet Raffles and the Grand Prize Raffles, as well as the 50/50s always draw great ticket sales. The most highlighted portion of the Carnival had to be the PieThrow because the target was good-natured Principal Brian Schillaci. “All week long the students have been telling me how much they were looking forward to this!” laughed the Principal. “It’s all in fun and it helps the school, so I don’t mind,” he added. Mrs. Brew was pleased with the outcome of the day. “We are very happy it was a sunny day. And, everything goes to gifting the school and the students for whatever they need. We want to thank everyone for their support during the Carnival.”

Behind Joseph Vincent Brando

Story Susan Murphy

A

true “hidden treasure” of Monmouth County, J. Vincent Jewelers offers the finest, most unique jewels, spectacular jewelry art, and brilliant gemstones. A friendly staff will greet you and browsing is encouraged. Expertise, genuine concern, and making dreams come true are key factors at J. Vincent Jewelers. The owner, Joseph Vincent Brando, has been in the jewelry business since the early 1980s, and fulfilling dreams is what he does best. Dreams are not only for children, and they may change as we grow older, as shared by Mr. Brando. “When my son was eight years old, he asked me if being a jewelry designer is what I dreamed about when I was a young boy. I answered no, much to his dismay. I proceeded to explain to him that when I was a young boy I dreamed of being a professional basketball player. Remember, we are talking about dreams here. It was obvious at a very early stage in my life that my dream of becoming an NBA player was delusional at best.” He explained to his son how much he loved his job, and how being a jewelry designer is exciting and fulfilling. His job allows him to travel to places all around the world, places that at eight-years-old he never would have imagined he would see. “It also allows me to share in the excitement of other people’s lives, whether it be an engagement or wedding. Perhaps an important anniversary, birthday or the arrival of a newborn. Sometimes, I get to learn a little about a family’s history when I am asked to restore an heirloom or create a new design that will incorporate important memories from the past transformed to add meaning into ones present day lifestyle, clandestined to be a future heirloom with an even greater story to tell one day in the future,” he explained to his son. “My work is deeply fulfilling. The people that I have met and the opportunities I have had to share in their lives is the inspiration that makes me be the best I can be at jewelry design. My roots in the industry started in New York designing and manufacturing solely for the wholesale trade. In the late 80s, I fell in love with Monmouth County and moved to Middletown. For years I serviced many of the popular jewelry shops in the area and finally decided in 2006 to open up a fine jewelry boutique in Colts Neck,” shared Mr. Brando. J. Vincent Jewel-

ers is nestled next to Becker’s Hardware. “We have fine luxury watch brands that the most discretionary collector will appreciate. Our bridal designs are second to none. Capture her heart with a ring tailored just for her. Imagine a handmade design, exclusively hers, that will always remind her of how unique she is to you,” said Mr. Brando. “My experience since opening up my shop in November of 2006 has exceeded my most wild expectations! We are open seven days a week, however we do take some Sundays off during the summer months,” said Mr. Brando. He invites customers to “feel free to browse and feel the relaxing pleasure our magnificent shop will play upon each one of your senses! Make yourself at home, come meet our family. Whether you are in for a watch battery, a $25.00 Pandora charm, considering an engagement ring, or just looking around taking in the spectacular artwork, my staff and I are here to treat you with the kindness and respect you deserve. Jewelry is an artform, compelling and unique as is the individual who wears it. Our goal is to make you smile, maybe even feel like the celebrity/rock star you are!” Mr. Brando noted that after the conversation with his son, he reflected on how blessed and lucky he was to do what he does. “I explained to him that no matter what his dream or career may be, do it with pride and integrity. Find something that allows you to express yourself and makes you happy and you will never work another day in your life! And when given the opportunity, be charitable and help others around you achieve their goals and dreams, and try to find time each day to be thankful, grateful, and count your blessings.” Mr. Brando joked that his son never really asked him too many questions after that day. June is the month of Father’s Day, graduation, and wedding celebrations. These events are connected by love of family, commitment to self, and the exchange of that ultimate gift. What better place to find that gift than at J. Vincent Jewelers, located in the Colts Neck Shopping Center. J. Vincent Jewelers was recently selected by DeBeers to be an affiliate of the Forevermark Diamond Dealer Group. Visit their website at www. jvincent.com. They can also be reached at 732.256.4410.

Stop by and don’t miss your chance to see some of Colts Neck’s finest take the plunge. On Wednesday, May 8, the CNBA held their monthly meeting and were honored to have Pastor Chris Durkin of the Colts Neck Community Church speak to us about “Conflict Resolution”. Pastor Chris (an active member of the CNBA), explained the importance of the Three R’s: Relax, Reality, and Relationship. Conflict cannot be avoided, but rather we must figure out how we can grow in these moments. In general, people crave healthy and inspiring relationships in the workplace and we can bring peace through good communications and listening. “Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good!” stated Pastor Chris.

The Colts Neck Business Association welcomes all to our General Meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the Colts Neck Public Library (1 Winthrop Road behind Town Hall). The CNBA continues to grow and is led by; President Glen J. Dalakian of CSAV Systems, Vice Presidents Anna Appolonia of Heritage House Sotheby’s Realtors & Andrea Giannopoulos of Capital Paint Centers, Secretaries Carolyn Burtnick of Community Magazine & Monica Vermeulen of the Ashley Lauren Foundation and Treasurer Dave Sokoler of Merandex Technology Solutions. The group is advised by Colts Neck residents and CNBA Founders Sal Barbagallo and Silvan Lutkewitte. This Team has been working diligently to expand the group and focus its members on business matters and community service. Holmdel Girl Scout Troop 146 Beautify Their School

I

n November 2012, the 2nd grade Brownies of Girl Scout Troop 146 brainstormed ideas on how to fulfill their community service requirements. They all unanimously agreed they wanted to take action in their own community and collectively decided to do something for their school. The girls met with Principal Brian Schillachi and asked him what projects needed to be done at Village School. Mr. Schillaci said he would love for the girls to help the “Beautify Village School” initiative. The Brownie troop then decided to paint a colorful mural on one of the walls in the main hallway of the school. Each girl then drew her own vision of what the mural could look like, and then, taking a piece of each girls’ vision, they came up with a sketch. The girls also agreed to put inspiring words to live by, incorporating into the mural The Girl Scout Law – which reminds everyone to be fair and honest, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, responsible for what one says and does, and to respect themselves, others and authority. The girls worked under the leadership of Art teacher, Mrs. Jaime Montana, to sketch and paint the mural. The end result was amazing. They truly are a group of girls with tremendous ability to make a difference in their world!

Marnie is a small Chihuahua mix and a shy little girl who looks like a tiny little deer. Very good in the house, completely housebroken, and fully vaccinated. Marnie came from a hoarding situation and when she arrived her little ears were full of bite marks and she was petrified of people, movement, and other dogs. Today she is friendly, loves to snuggle and will curl up with the other dogs in the house. Marnie will come up and put her head on you when she wants attention. She is still very timid around new people and will need some time to adjust to her new surroundings, but once she does will be a very loyal, very loving companion. Castle of Dreams Animal Rescue is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to saving dogs from high kill shelters up and down the east coast and even as far away as California. They are always ready to help an animal in need and work hard to make sure every animal in their care is fully vetted, spayed, neutered and placed in a good forever home. If interested in adopting one of these dogs please go to our website and fill out an application; www. castle-of-dreams.com

Babie is an adult poodle rescued from a New York shelter. He has been neutered, vaccinated and cared for medically. Babie is the sweetest guy around. He loves to be petted and is extremely affectionate. He gets along great with other dogs. He had a rough start with some medical issues that have all been taken care of and is now looking for a wonderful family that will love him! If you want to give this wonderful guy a home please fill out an application! Adoption is easy and very rewarding. Mona, a 2 1/2 year-old, Pomeranian Chihuahua mix. She was kept in a crate for 2 years. Surprisingly, while she is still a little timid, she has come around and is ready for a family. She has never lived with children, but would be fine with older children. Good with cats and social with other dogs. Mona is perfectly potty trained, she uses the pet door. She is playful and kind and weighs about 12 lbs. Spayed and fully vaccinated, Mona is ready for her new home. Leena is an adorable 6 lb. Yorkie. Approximately 8 years old, Leena is wee pad trained, LOVES her doggy clothes, playing fetch, sitting on your lap, going for car rides & walking on the leash. This pup was obviously very loved & spoiled in her previous home & will make the perfect lap companion. We feel that Leena would do best in a home that doesn’t have small children or other dogs. Spayed & fully vaccinated, Leena is ready to be your new best friend.

Maverick is a

fully-vetted and neutered 5 year old Chow-Shepherd mix. He was surrendered by his Senior Owners due to lifestyle changes that included them moving into a home with their young grand-children..a situation that neither the family, nor the dog was prepared to accommodate. Maverick is a typical Chow personality: independent and aloof but at the same time, a very loyal and loving companion to his Foster family. Maverick needs time to warm up to strangers but overall Maverick has proven to be a very loving Companion. Maverick needs an owner that understands this dominant, loving but reserved breed and that is willing to work with Maverick at re-gaining trust with strangers & friends alike.

Corona is an 8 year old

Chihuahua mix rescued from a hoarding situation in the south. She’s a little shy at first but once she gets to know you, Corona will be your new best friend. Spayed, vaccinated and wee pad trained, she is working on house training skills. When she wants your attention, Corona will tap you with her paw and moan. Corona would do best in a quiet home. She gets along with other dogs and ignores cats.

Angelina is a 9 year old, senior Yorkie who loves people. Petite and sweet at around 5 pounds, she just loves to be by your side. Sadly, Angelina had been with her owner for 9 years till about 2 weeks ago when a family change caused her to be surrendered to rescue. She is now in foster care and coming out of her shell in her new surroundings. She is dog friendly, cat friendly and child friendly but due to her age would do best in a home where she can have a little peace and quiet. Spayed and up to date on vaccinations. 58

HONOR

“At Ranney School, we strive to instill in each student a sense of community and a commitment to service,” said Lower School Head and Associate Head of Academic Administration Patricia Lee Marshall. “When students reach out to others, our goal is that they learn to see service and social commitment as fundamental aspects of a purposeful life.” The visit to Kensington was just one of many community service projects that the club has carried out during the 2012-2013 school year. The group participated in a local beach cleanup in October— unfortunately, their hard work was done just before Hurricane Sandy hit the New Jersey shoreline. In response to the superstorm, club members and Lower School students spent November and December raising more than $2,000 through bake sales for Project Rebuild and Restore. The Red Bankbased nonprofit organization works directly with communities in need and was dedicated to helping families affected by the hurricane. With help from the Ranney School Parents’ Association, students also supported a food drive and holiday toy drive for New Jersey community members impacted by Sandy. In February, the group held a flower sale, raising more than $600 for the Ronald McDonald House. The May visit to Kensington went so well that Community Service Club leaders and Lower School teachers, Mrs. Moruzzi, Mrs. Fowlkes and Mrs. Cicco, are already planning a second program at the center for the fall. “One of our community service goals is for the children to learn from first-hand experience that our local community has needs for various types of assistance,” said Mrs. Fowlkes and Mrs. Moruzzi, who led the Kensington field trip. “The children have experienced feelings of empathy and compassion at an early age, and it is our hope that they continue to nurture these emotions with our club and in their private lives.”

ALL HANDS ON DECK

A Fundraiser to Support the Boondocks Fishery That Started With Three Men And An Idea On April 11, 2013, The Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank hosted the “All Hands on Deck” event, a charitable event for Kelly Ryan, owner of Boondocks Fishery Red Bank, whose popular lobster shack was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. It all started with three men who had an idea - Robert Lowe, Danny Murphy and Ken Scaggs of the community based Navesink Business Group in Red Bank, approached Kevin Barry, Operations Manager at The Oyster Point Hotel/Molly Pitcher Inn, about hosting the event. Then the Navesink Business Group and The Oyster Point Hotel asked The Red Bank Flavour Restaurants to assist Boondock’s owner, Kelly Ryan, rebuild her business.

The Red Bank Flavour restaurants quickly volunteered their support for this community effort and offered delicious menu samplings complimented by entertainment by Gary Philips and his Steel Drum Band with a special appearance by local musician Brian Kirk and Xplosive Entertainment. The popular Red Bank hotel attracted over 450 people and the event raised over $25,000.00. This event would not have been possible without the sponsorship of Flavour, a Red Bank Culinary Alliance, The Oyster Point Hotel, The Navesink Business Group, The Kerr Agency, Environmental Rail Solutions, and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.

Red Bank Flavour Restaurants who donated their time and food:

Teak, The Bistro, Danny’s Steakhouse, Dish, Front St. Trattoria, The Cheese Cave, Gaetano’s, Readies, Sugarrush, Red Bank Chocolate Shoppe, The Melting Pot, Taste, Molly Pitcher Inn & The Oyster Point Hotel, Blue Water Seafood, The Danish Café & Starbucks.

lose to 80 businesses were in attendance at the “Business Is Blooming” B2B and ‘Paint The Town Pink’ Celebration at the Middletown Arts Center (MAC) on April 30. Hosted by the Middletown Community Affairs Council, the B2B has been held annually for the last six years and has always been an effective and successful catalyst for bringing businesses together. This year, however, was really special, according to event organizer and B2B founder Lori Anne Oliwa, a member of the Community Affairs Council and owner of The Write Angles Public Relations & Event Planning LLC, who felt the event would also be a good way to build awareness and to promote Middletown’s first year of participation in ‘Paint The Town Pink,’ a Meridian Health initiative in effect from May 1 through June 1 which emphasized the importance of yearly mammograms in the fight against breast cancer. The strategy to incorporate a ‘pink’ celebration into the B2B clearly helped to create excitement, and most importantly, provided a new platinum catering sponsor for the event. Chiafullo’s, a sixty-year old Middletown business that recently opened a second location in Campbell’s Junction, Belford, agreed without hesitation to provide food for the celebration. Chiafullo’s has been an ardent and longtime support-

er of ‘Paint The Town Pink’ in multiple towns including Red Bank and Atlantic Highlands and welcomed the opportunity to get involved in Middletown, according to Chiafullo’s owner Meghan McLean. McLean could not think of a more appropriate and heartfelt way to continue the Chiafullo tradition of community service than by helping Middletown to celebrate something created to save lives. “Service is part of our legacy, and we believe in giving. Chiafullo’s will always support the people and causes important to the community. We care and in turn appreciate the support and loyalty that the community has given us,” McLean said emotionally. Chiafullo’s provided enough food for 150 people including fruit, cheese, vegetable, sandwich and even cookie platters which were artfully-arranged and decorated along with several different types of pasta and sauces. “Their catering was meticulous, and the food was just terrific,” noted event sponsor and Middletown resident Chris Mulvaney, owner of CMDS Marketing, who says he will be visiting Chiafullo’s in Campbell’s Junction in the near future. “It’s great. I have a place that’s close where I can run in and know I’ll get something really good,” he said. Mulvaney, who designed the event invitation, met several business ‘prospects’ during the evening and was positive about the variety of businesses in attendance. Many guests were impressed with both the business networking opportunities and the visual impact of the venue, including Linda Kramer, a member of the Middletown Lions Club who attends the B2B every year. “It’s good every year. People are always relaxed and happy at this event, and that makes meeting everyone easy. This year especially, the venue was breathtaking with the color pink exploding from everywhere,” Kramer said. Pink table linens donated by Steve Mamola of Jacques Reception Center and cascading floral arrangements featuring fuchsia roses and pink stargazer lilies were an attractive addition to the spring art exhibit at MAC. The exhibit, which had just been installed the day of the event, appropriately featured paintings with pink flowers and trees, even though that was “purely accidental but nice,” according to MAC Director Maggie O’Brien. Carol Kenney of Silver Tulip Florist, Lincroft, designed and donated the floral arrangements. Even the desserts of chocolate-covered strawberries and bananas provided by Suzi’s Sweet Shoppe were in keeping with the pink theme and sported pink icing and sugar! Most of the women in attendance also wore something pink, including members of Junior Girl Scout Troop 1701 from Nutswamp School, who were recognized at the event for creating a public service announcement which encourages women to get their annual mammograms. Sponsor Alyse Liebowitz from Three Chicks That Click Photography, the official photographer, captured the color of the night and made everyone feel important with her skills behind the lens.

Story Susan Murphy

R Hope, One Room At A Time

oom In Our Hearts (RIOHearts) is a New Jersey-based non-profit organization dedicated to helping families whose homes have been affected by crisis. Their mission is to redecorate one room in the home of these families at no cost to them. “Hurricane Sandy was the impetus to start this organization, but it was an idea I have had for a long time,” explained Executive Director Katharine Koehler, who founded RIOHearts in November, 2012. Although the crisis right now are the needs of families post Sandy, Mrs. Koehler said, “Other family disasters do occur, and we will be there to help for the long haul.”RIOHearts is contacted by different volunteer, government and relief agencies with names of those in need. A Project Manager and an assistant meet with the homeowner for a preliminary interview to discuss which room they would like decorated, in what style, and the colors to be used. “Our goal is to make it feel like it is their room, not ours,” said Mrs. Koehler. Follow up visits and phone calls are generally required. Families are also asked if there are any special pieces they have that can be incorporated into the room. Within a couple of weeks, RIOHearts has gathered the furniture, home décor and window treatments appropriate for each home The items used to redecorate a room are either donated, bought at garage sales, or flea markets. “I am an artist and am passionate about not adding everything to the landfill. Perfectly great things are often discarded that can be repurposed and reused,” said Mrs. Koehler. She noted that all of the volunteers who assist her have this same passion and belief. Mrs. Koehler added that as a teenager she designed the bedroom she shared with her sister by using recycled objects and their existing furniture.

Once everything is collected for the room, numerous volunteers arrive to get the work done. “We use high school boys to help load and carry, generous husbands to fix, hang with molly bolts and do miscellaneous tasks while other volunteers dedicate themselves to layout and design. We have had high school and college students interested in design help us set up. It is all about creatively giving back,” explained Mrs. Koehler. As for the companies who assist RIOHearts, Mrs. Koehler said Carpet Value Outlet in Middletown generously donates rugs; Thibaut Wallpaper and Fabric Company in Newark, New Jersey is their prime source for adding a professional design element to most rooms. “Outback Steakhouse in Middletown often times will treat our recipients to a meal as we set up the room. This way, they can walk in and be surprised. We cannot say enough about these company’s product quality and considerate spirit,” she emphasized. Although there is so much work to be done in Union Beach, Mrs. Koehler noted RIOHearts has worked in other towns. “We completed a lovely bedroom in Highlands and are currently working in Keansburg and Leonardo.” A couple in Union Beach, recent recipients of the generosity of Room In Our Hearts, excitedly shared the joy of seeing how their kitchenette/family room was transformed with a “seashore chic” look. “Room In Our Hearts was so willing to help us and just great to work with. Katharine (Koehler) and Denise (Trewhella) arrived on time and made the entire project so non-stressful. It is amazing what they did. Now I can sit and enjoy the room. This is such a wonderful organization and Katharine and Denise are two special ladies. We have been out of our home for seven months – it’s so nice to

Items purchased at flea market and garage sales is an additional expense. The rooms completed for the families affected by crisis are done at no cost to them. Having a room that is unique and special to them positively impacts their ability to rebuild and rediscover hope, emphasizes a statement on the website for RIOHearts. Oak Hill Academy 4th Graders Discover a Delicious Way to Study New Jersey

G

ood educators realize that learning is multisensory, but at Oak Hill Academy, even a student’s taste buds are included in the educational process. Fourth graders put their knowledge to the test by creating a cake in the shape of New Jersey. With the help of their three teachers and a lot of parental support, the children shaped individual cakes into the 21 counties of New Jersey. Then they assembled these cakes together and landscaped them with goodies to represent diverse geographic attributes of our fair state and showcase the varied uses of the land. For instance, crushed chocolate cookies and graham crackers were used to represent fertile and sandy soil respectively. Spearmint leaves modeled the Pine Barrens, while licorice formed the major roads that connect New Jersey to its surrounding states. Even important rivers, mountains, hills, buildings, and lighthouses were identified using a variety of sweet treasures. Of course, the experience would not have been complete without an official taste test by all of the students. What a delicious reward for all of their hard work! This is one important lesson that they will not soon forget!

Lincroft First Aid & Fire Company Pasta Dinner Fundraiser

T

hrough the joint efforts of the Lincroft First Aid and Lincroft Fire Company Station 10, an all-youcan-eat Pasta Dinner fundraiser was held on April 29, hosted by the Lincroft Inn. Members from both Lincroft First Aid and Fire Company cooked and served the meals. Lincroft Fire Company member Ryan Clarke and Lincroft First Aid member and Lincroft Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary member Bridget Matthews chaired the event. They noted that the Lincroft Inn graciously donated all the food and the use of the facility. “The proceeds from this event are split between the First Aid and Fire Company. We appreciate all of the support given to us by the Lincroft Inn and those who attend the pasta dinner,” said Mr. Clarke. “About 100 people were served,” said Mrs. Matthews. Larry and Gail Connors of Neptune City attended to support their son-in-law Anthony Russo, a firefighter and their daughter Aimee who is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. “We have attended the blood drives, the Hi-Lo Game Night, and this pasta dinner,” said Mrs. Connors. “It’s a nice time to meet new people and this is a very nice restaurant,” she added. Mr. Connor agreed and noted that the food was great.
