ABOUT THE FEATURE
Our feature this month is on Holmdel resident and awardwinning artist Grace Modla. I always find people’s hobbies and interests fascinating, it’s like that thing that makes them tick. For Modla, that “thing” is art, and even though the realities of life, like career and motherhood took over, she has never strayed too long from it. Now, with her boys older, she is back at it full time. (More on page 32)

A LITTLE POLITICKING This is not news to anyone, but this presidential race has been definitely interesting to watch, to say the least. It takes a certain type of personality to be in that fast-paced and high-energy life of a political reporter. Meet Red Bank native Olivia Nuzzi, she knows all too well the life, and at 23, has already handled the good, the bad, and the ugly of politics. Whether you agree or disagree with her political beliefs, she has definitely accomplished a great deal at a very young age. (More on page 20)
SUMMER LOVIN' With summer on the horizon, events are not hard to find, it’s almost a task to chooose which one you want to go to on any given day. CM’s Local Events section is loaded with festivals, fairs, outdoor concerts – the list goes on. Our top picks for June are the 39th Annual Bayshore Greek Fest, the Free Sandy Hook Beach Concerts, Lincroft’s Inaugural Food Truck Fest and the Wine & Chocolate Festival at Monmouth Park (yes, we said wine and chocolate!) – you can learn more about these events and others on page 14 (Eventful) and 56 (Local Events section).

Maria Ricciardi and her son Joseph Zuppa in front of Monmouth University Library in West Long Branch, NJ – the Collegic Nav APP located them as seen by the blue dot on the map.
MONMOUTH COUNTY RESIDENTS Create APP for College Students Story Susan Murphy
Longtime Colts Neck residents Maria Ricciardi and her son Joseph Zuppa have created a Navigational Application that gives college students an easy and safe way to navigate around college campuses. Now, there is an answer to a student’s question, “How can I possibly find my way around this huge campus?” The answer is, “There’s an app for that!”
multiple campuses. Never get lost around your college campus again!
Twenty-year-old Joseph Zuppa, a 2013 graduate of Saint John Vianney High School in Holmdel, is attending Rutgers in New Brunswick as an IT major. Joseph was a transfer student to the college and had no idea how to get around the campus. One night he called his mother to say, This mother and son team created “I have a great idea. Let’s come up Collegic Nav, a friendly mobile applica- with an app for students that are tion that allows users to receive directions going to college that will show from their current location to their desired them how to get around campus destination, even destinations located on just by using their phone.” And,

as they say, the rest is history! The app took one year to create and Maria noted, “We came up with the name by relating it to college students and nav for directions to get them around campus.” Collegic Nav offers multiple features that include a search button with campus names and it provides the distance and estimated time of arrival. The pathway will highlight the travel route as well as food icons to restaurants and coffee shops, with hours of operation along the way. If you travel often to certain destinations, Collegic Nav stores multiple locations for frequent use and included along with the destination is a complete detailed description of the location. Additional benefits of this application include a blue light phone box locator, which is a safeguard feature for extra protection and emergencies that shows nearby blue light phone box locations. “As a parent of a student, I’m concerned for my son’s schooling and safety. I wanted to design an app that would be able to address both concerns and make it a desired tool for the students,” explained Maria. As the Collegic Nav website states, this app can be your personal tour guide to college campuses. It is user-friendly and will also assist parents or friends coming for a visit to easily locate the many great places on campus. It is also perfect for staff and faculty. Maria and Joseph said the feedback from students and parents has been fantastic. “Comments such as, ‘what a great idea’ and ‘when can I start using it’ are very common. Students love it since most college campuses are expansive and confusing. Now they will be able to find locations on their campuses in an easy and safe way. Even the staff loves it!” Currently, the featured school campuses for the Collegic Nav app are Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ; Hofstra University, Long Island, NY; Monmouth University, Monmouth County/West Long Branch, NJ; Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ; and James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA. A few of the many colleges listed as “coming soon” on the website include Princeton University; Kean University; Rowan University; and Montclair State University. “Schools are being worked on everyday and they will be out as soon as possible. We take requests to add schools directly on our website under ‘notify me now’,” said Maria. Collegic Nav is a valuable mobile application that is convenient and easy to use and it is easy to download from the Apple store on your phone, Android will be coming soon. Earth Day Festival
Story Susan Murphy
Holmdel’s 18th Annual Earth Day Festival was held at Bayonet Farm on April 30, 2016. Bayonet Farm is the former home of Laura Harding, an actress, heiress and philanthropist. Nearly 800 people attended this crowd-pleasing event, which was co-sponsored by Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU). Guided tours of the Harding Farmhouse were led by Dennis Henderson and James Murphy throughout the afternoon. Guided walks through the Bayonet Farm property were also offered to visitors. Children were able to enjoy the Farm Friends Petting Zoo, which for a nominal fee included feed for the animals and a readmission stamp. On the upper level of the Red Barn was the Music Hall, where coffee house rock was performed by Frank & Bill; quirky folk music by Lords of Liechtenstein; and classic rock by Late4Lunch. In the lower level area of the Red Barn was deemed the Art Space for kids where free crafts were offered all day. Hungry appetites were satisfied at the Red Barn Deli which featured sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and beverages. The Olde Fashioned Bake Shoppe had many homemade goodies for purchase. Bayonet Farm t-shirt sales at the Red Barn Deli will help to support future Earth Day Festivals. The Grey Star Barn was designated as the Children’s Theater where young children learned about bees and the interesting lives of mammals. Also in

the Grey Star Barn were posters made by Village and Indian Hill School’s resident artists which had been entered in the Earth Day Poster Contest. Under the Big Top were representatives from specific organizations such as NY/NJ Baykeepers; Citizens Climate Lobby; Citizens for Informed Land Use; Friends of Holmdel Open Space; Herbertsville Honey Company; the Holmdel Girl Scouts; the Holmdel Green Team; Holmdel High School ECO Club; Monmouth County Master Composters; Monmouth County Master Gardeners Sierra Club; and the Western Monmouth League of Women Voters. Earth Day Festival was started by CILU and began with just the Greenway Hike and free bagels served on the Harding House porch. CILU, the Holmdel Environmental Commission and JCP&L worked together to make this year a success. Special thanks to Holmdel Township Department of Public Works and Recreation; Holmdel First Aid Squad; Holmdel Venture Crew #10; and Dearborn Market for its 18th annual fresh fruit contribution. CILU Publicity Chair Carol Beckenstein said, “We work as a team but cover our positions very independently after all these years.” CILU Executive Board Member Regina Criscione said, “Unlike other events in Holmdel, the Earth Day Festival has been run on a shoestring budget and completely by volunteers for the past 18 years. We rely on donations from CILU members and other civic-minded residents along with proceeds received from past festivals. We strive to make most events in the festival free so that everyone can come and enjoy learning about the natural wonders of our planet. What better place to celebrate Earth Day than with a festival on beautiful Bayonet Farm?” The 2016 Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival Committee included Co-chairwomen Sede Spang and Karen Strickland; Carol Beckenstein; Janet Berk; Jenni Blumenthal; Margaret Cluskey; Regina Criscione; Cathy D’Orazio; Dina Hamwi; Janet Jackel; Music Coordinators Ted Myslinski and Mike Rauchwerk; and Greenway Hike Leaders Ralph Blumenthal and Hon. Larry Fink. If anyone is interested in joining the 2017 Earth Day Festival Committee, please email ksyvruds@comcast.net.

Welcome to The VIP Table LAST MONTH WE SPOKE ABOUT how sometimes life can be difficult. I received so many follow up emails I wanted to drive the point home. Life is a constant balancing act - balancing your blessings and your burdens. We all love when a dream comes - when we get the deal, move into the new house, meet the right person - but with every blessing comes a burden. Life is a contradiction. It’s a blessing to move into that bigger house, but a burden to have to clean it. It’s a blessing to have that baby, but a burden to get up in the middle of the night. The mistake we make is we want the blessings without the burden and that’s not reality, they come as a package. The key is to learn to enjoy the blessing while the burden is still there. I’m not being negative, but you’ll rarely get to a place where your life is problem free. If you’re always trying to pray away the burdens you’ll always be frustrated. You wouldn’t have been given the blessing if you couldn’t handle the burden. The issue becomes what we focus on - focus on the blessing, not the burden… YOU and ONLY YOU can change that perspective. Regular readers of The Table know we absorb motivational and success material and translate them into relevant parallels in business, investing and life. Many entrepreneurs have given up a life of certainty for a world of self-motivated opportunity. A world where one day you feel like the king/queen – to days bordering on depression wondering if you’re gonna lose it all. It’s the “Roller Coaster of Risk” and all successful people share this ride! Over the next few months, I will break down the keys to risk success which we will explore and parallel to family and finance. 1. Identify specific goals 2. Write step by step action plan 3. Have nonstop determination to reach your goal 4. Turn your goals into genuine service, which will help others 5. Follow an unfailing code of honesty & integrity 6. Be creative & have willingness to try the untried 7. Faith and an absolute belief
The College of Financial Planning recently updated the top mistakes families make, here they are in no specific order: • • • • • •
No current Will (and medical directives) Beneficiary designations (named in insurance and investment accounts – verify and update them) Emotional investing (establish a strategy, then don’t panic) DIY investing (almost always leads to costly mistakes/taxes) Under Insured (plan for life/health/long term care) No estate planning (why give more money than necessary to the government?)
TIP OF THE MONTH. To get money out of your taxable estate and assure your friends and family will love you when you are gone (not that they wouldn’t anyway), purchase an insurance policy that will guarantee your money multiplies like a rabbit on blue pills (rates have NEVER been cheaper!) – the sooner the better/cheaper. Regardless of your age, almost anyone can be insured for some dollar amount. Beneficiaries will receive proceeds income tax free and the premiums you pay will reduce your taxable estate (think of it as an investment in your dying, it’s one of the only 100% investing certainties). Just for kicks, price out a big term policy. Better yet, have the proceeds fund a what’s called an Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust that you set up inexpensively and dictate how they spend your fortune after you’re gone (and save them taxes). Speak to your financial advisor… brilliant! QUOTE OF THE MONTH: “If you are not at the table, you are on the menu” Each month, I attempt to serve you what I think is worthwhile words – life, business and fiscally motivational mindshare. Throughout history, “The Table” symbolically represents a center of ideas, spirit, discussion and education. Our “VIP Table” setting will follow this theme for friends and readers. THE CM INTERVIEW
NATIONAL POLITICAL REPORTER OLIVIA NUZZI AT A GLANCE Monmouth County native Olivia Nuzzi, a national political reporter, has weathered many a political storm and come through with both feet planted firmly on the ground.
STORY S U S A N M U R P H Y
In fact, at 23, Nuzzi has already handled “the good, the bad, and the ugly” of politics with an impressive determination to write what she sees.
“I

think to pursue any career where your work is for public consumption you have to be somewhat masochistic, because you will inevitably have critics. I assume psychologically healthy people would not be interested in laboring over something only to have it torn apart by people on Twitter, but political journalists seem to thrive on that sort of conflict,” said Nuzzi.
More Monmouth Musings, a news website. “I always liked to write and when I became obsessed with politics, after Governor McGreevey resigned, it seemed natural to write about politics. I thought perhaps I would become a speechwriter or work in political communications, but I think I was too skeptical for either of those professions. I could never be earnest enough to work for a candidate or political cause.”
Nuzzi grew up in Red Bank, NJ and attended River Plaza Elementary School, Thompson Middle School, and Middletown South High School. “I left Middletown South to study independently and graduated in 2012. While in high school, I mostly kept to myself. I read a lot and watched the news.” During high school, Nuzzi wrote for The TriCity News and for
While attending Fordham University, Nuzzi had been freelancing for New York Magazine and Politico Magazine, as well as what she termed “a vaguely satirical print publication called NSFWCorp.” She majored in political science but left after a few semesters to join The Daily Beast full time. “I didn’t much like attending college and I guess time will tell if

leaving to work as a journalist was a smart decision,” she noted. Nuzzi started freelancing for The Daily Beast in the winter of 2014, and joined them full time in March 2014. The Daily Beast is an American news reporting and opinion website focusing on politics and pop culture that started up in 2008. “I love magazine journalism, but I also have a high metabolism for news, so The Daily Beast is the ideal place to be able to write freely in my style on a daily basis about breaking political stories. I think it’s the ideal place to be for 2016, because we value honesty over faux objectivity, which makes us well-suited to cover Donald Trump, who is the biggest political story certainly of my lifetime. A lot of organizations seem to be struggling to cover him because they are trying to

treat his ideas like the ideas of any other candidate, and I don’t think you can pretend that’s true while still being fair and providing a public service.” Being able to cover a presidential campaign that is fastpaced and high-energy – and this is Nuzzi’s first one – takes preparation and the ability to focus. “I try to read as much as possible and not pay too much attention to stories that seem manufactured. On the trail, I try to make sure I sleep enough and I have some playlists ready for long drives to rallies and town halls,” said Nuzzi. She continued, “This is the first presidential campaign I’ve covered, and incidentally it’s the first presidential campaign where all of the people who are paid to know what they’re talking about--analysts, experts, political scientists, beltway pundits--have been revealed to know very little. So it’s been interesting to watch this entire industry of people who profit off the sport of politics sort of come crashing down, and I think it’s been very liberating for certain journalists like myself who have long suspected the folks in the TV studios in DC and New York don’t know anything and the only way to gain insight is to talk to voters on the ground.”

Outside of her political writing career, Nuzzi said she doesn’t have a lot of hobbies. “I pretty much either produce or consume journalism constantly.” She has thought of pursuing another type of writing at some point. “I’ve thought about writing for television – perhaps one day!” she said. As for what the future holds for Nuzzi, she said, “Assuming we’re not all living in Trump-branded camps come January, I plan to keep on covering politics. I would probably cover the camps, too, though.” Whether you agree or disagree with Olivia Nuzzi’s political beliefs*, she has definitely accomplished a great deal at a very young age. Nuzzi currently lives in Washington, D. C., where she moved in 2015 after leaving Monmouth County in New Jersey. *Community Magazine is a non-partisan publication and does not endorse any political party.

Letter To the Editor THROUGHOUT MY 30-PLUS YEARS in public life, no single issue has presented greater or more complex challenges than affordable housing. It’s indisputable that housing is expensive in New Jersey and that there is a need for housing that’s affordable to lower income families. While it’s true the New Jersey Supreme Court has ordered municipalities to zone for such housing, there are important questions being raised as to the appropriateness and even the legitimacy of that decision. Those are not the questions I want to address. Since I entered public life, one of my ongoing priorities has been the protection and preservation of our natural resources as they are the foundation on which our quality of life is built. Colts Neck is located on the watersheds of two important natural systems. One safeguards the pristine trout waters of Hockhockson Brook in the southeastern part of the township. The other protects the potable water supply of more than a quarter million people who rely on water from the Swimming River Reservoir. Both are recognized as Environmentally Sensitive in the State Plan and are so designated on the official State Plan Map. This is significant because, from the very beginning, the Supreme Court has relied on that map in determining where affordable housing should and should not be built. I recall the original State Development Guide Plan Map the court relied on, and how the legislature created the State Planning Commission to produce a better, more refined map to
guide future development. The court made it clear in the second Mt. Laurel decision that map should be closely followed. Colts Neck has always tried to adhere to that guidance. Now the court appears to have shifted its policies again. Initially, towns were supposed to zone for housing in appropriate locations within their borders. In the next round, towns like Colts Neck with no sewered areas to support high density housing were allowed to find partner communities with that capacity and transfer their obligation to them, allowing towns to protect environmentally sensitive resources. Now the court has done away with this option and we are faced with the prospect of having to accommodate an enormous number of housing units; almost 1,500 in total. This magnitude of development will not only overwhelm our public services and forever change the character of our community, but we are left with no place to build without placing vital resources in jeopardy. Housing is an important resource, but housing can be built anywhere. Simple logic dictates it be built where there are jobs and transportation to get people to those jobs, and a network of social service agencies to assist those with needs beyond employment. While housing can be moved, natural resources cannot. We must protect them - that is a responsibility that goes beyond our borders. It is an obligation to all who depend on these waters. This responsibility leaves us with no choice but to fight and urge every other town that relies on these resources to join the fight because we are all in this together. Sincerely, Lillian G. Burry Monmouth County Freeholder Former Colts Neck Mayor

Colts Neck High School’s 2nd Annual
COLOR RUN
28
PHOTOS RENE MOORE COLTS NECK HIGH SCHOOL held its 2nd Annual Color Run, Chase The Rainbow 5K on May 14, 2016 at Bucks Mill Park. Colts Neck High School’s National Honor Society, Naval Junior ROTC, and Free the Children jointly hosted the event. The proceeds went to the Lupus Foundation, the National Parkinson Foundation, and Free the Children. This year a portion of the proceeds raised from the color run will also be donated to a school in Nicaragua to cover the cost of some basic necessities intended to keep it safe and clean. “Our goal was to raise $10,000+ to donate to our charities and we reached that goal. Almost 500 folks participated in the run, mostly CNHS Students, and it was heartwarming to watch them have a great time working for a great cause. Next year, we hope to bring in more adults to make the run into a greater community event. Our goal for next year is to raise $15K,” noted Major Gregory J. Penczak, Senior Naval Science Instructor of Colts Neck High School Naval Junior ROTC.

Many of the volunteers include business professionals, home makers, high school and college age students, as well as some retirees. On the last day of April, the volunteer crew members took some time away from their busy schedules to prepare and serve up a pasta dinner at St. Catherine’s Church. Guests enjoyed an array of delicious, family-style meals that were prepared

by the first aid members and volunteers with meals consisting of meatballs, garlic bread, and a variety of salads and homemade pasta dishes. Desserts and soft drinks were also provided, and many guests were even allowed to bring their own beverages to the event. In addition to the dinner, there was also a 50-50 raffle with tables of prizes for children and families, where the proceeds from each raffle ticket purchase helped fund the first aid squad’s numerous volunteer programs, as well as their ongoing operations to give back to the community

Also in attendance to show their support for first aid squad was Freeholder Deputy Director Serena DiMaso (who is a Holmdel First Aid member) and Mike Sockol from The Holmdel Board of Education. Holmdel Artist Finds A New Way To Bring
the Ol d to Li gh t S tory Susan Murphy 12 x 25 acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas titled “Storm Indigo”
HOLMDEL RESIDENT GRACE MODLA has loved to draw and paint for as long as she can remember. “I was a quiet, worried, creative little kid and art was a saving outlet. As an adult, realities like career and new motherhood obviously took precedence, but as my two boys have gotten older I’ve been able to get back to it full time. Art doesn’t really let me stray for too long – my heart falls in love with it again and again,” she explained. Over the years, Modla has taken graduate art classes and workshops. “Luckily, I found my way to teachers over the years just when I needed them,” she noted. Modla, who is also a writer, said both art and writing are important to her. “Visual art and writing are really intertwined for me. I wouldn’t be able to choose one over the other. I love how language and words are so plastic and yet precise, and I love how finding your way to say just what you mean is always such a perilous but delicious challenge. And then painting lets me cut loose from my otherwise hyper-verbal life. On the canvas it’s all raw emotion and leaps of faith.” She explained how she finds ideas for her artwork. “I have certain preoccupations I come back to and explore again and again like the connections that tie us to family and home, that sense of place and belonging, balanced against the desire for flight and freedom, that constant push-pull. Love is a big theme for me - falling in love, being in love, the way that love offers madness and salvation all at once.” Modla is a mixed media artist who combines her unique design with a variety of materials to create some of her amazing artwork. She loves to put a new spin on an old idea. “I believe in second chances! And third, and fourth, and fifth chances, so I like to re-imagine and resurrect materials once their dictionary-defined use is over. In my ‘Bird’ series, for example, I start with acrylic paints because the saturation of color can be opaque and rich or transparent as a wash of watercolor. Then I layer fabrics from my old sewing days, dried leaves, onion bag netting,
old burlap, paint-soaked paper towels, pressed flowers and whatever else catches my eye. I like surfaces that have dimension and invite touch.” Colors are obviously key in her artwork and she chooses them carefully. “I love all color, anything vibrant and rich that has a kind of aliveness to it. I’m drawn to deep reds, deep magenta, indigo, and a very Tuscan orange-yellow. For me, color is a first language on the canvas. Rich and generous, acrylics allow me to keep pace with my instincts.” Once she has an idea, it becomes all encompassing for her. “For abstract works or the background to the ‘Bird’ works, I spray, splash, and tilt the paint around before I do any brushwork. What I like about this method is that it doesn’t allow for over thinking or revision and this forces me to live in the moment. The paint is moving, I’m moving, and I like the rush. To achieve rich saturation, I apply multiple layers of color over days or even weeks. Although it takes time, the result I like best is a spontaneous look of movement, energy, and passion.” The “Bird” artwork Modla refers to came about as a result of her seven-year-old niece’s birthday request for something original. Modla, whose work also includes “nude but not crude” paintings of women, had to design something different for her niece. “I cut out a little bird from some leftover paper and created a little branch and a bird family scene. It was so far outside anything I’d done before that I didn’t let anyone else see it for months! When I finally posted it to my Facebook page, the response was overwhelming. I mean, I was really shocked and very touched that so many people loved it. It’s been nothing but positive reception since then.” Modla, an award-winning artist, has shown her work both locally and online. Her first showing following many years’ absence was at the Bayonet Farm Arts & Music Festival where she won People’s Choice award. It was very affirming and encouraging, she said. “I actually won People’s Choice three years in a row.” The most recent award was from the Arts Society of Monmouth County Ruth Crown Memorial art exhibition. “It’s very gratifying and humbling to be recognized by one’s An artist at work - Grace Modla, a mixed media artist, concentrates on one of her creations.

peers,” said Modla. Additional places where her work has been shown include Linus Galleries in Los Angeles, California; Heaven Gallery in Asbury Park; and the “Women in Art” show for the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Kitchen in Red Bank. This past fall, her painting “Indigo Storm” was selected for the 29th Annual Juried Art Show at the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, which was judged by Adrienne Rooney of the Whitney Museum of Art in New York. Modla was thrilled, “That was a major highlight in my career so far.” Most recently, Modla participated in the Arts Festival at Thompson Park, Lincroft, on April 30 and May 1. Last year, she participated in the Monmouth County Parks System Spring Festival. “I received such overwhelming feedback! I’m always amazed by people’s reactions. The ‘Bird’ artwork seemed to make people happy and I usually sell out of the notecards. This year, sales and commissions were even better than last year. What’s nice about the notecards is that people can invest in an original work at a very modest cost. Then they contact me after the show is over to purchase one of the larger pieces. But more than that, I’ve met some wonderful people and made connections that have led to other opportunities and some solid new friendships.” Modla recently submitted work to Minted.com, a global online design community. They partnered with Pottery Barn who was looking for new designs for its Pottery Barn Kids division. Winners will be able to sell their designs in Pottery Barn stores and online. Modla said she has her fingers crossed. “It would be a pretty big deal to win. As of this date, they haven’t announced winners yet!”
“Bird: Family in the Garden”
“Bird: Bluebells”
The paintings Modla has done of women express her belief that females are powerful in mind, body and spirit. “For me, the female form is the fifth Element along with Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. At once it expresses power, gentleness, strength, vulnerability, and beauty in every way.” Modla is a member of Monmouth Arts, Red Bank; the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, Red Bank; and the Art Society of Monmouth County, Asbury Park; all in New Jersey. She has been a Holmdel resident for 20 years. Modla shared that she and her husband have two beautiful sons and one quirky Sheltie. “My art studio is in Holmdel and friends are always welcomed to drop for a visit- and to pick up a brush! I do have plans to hold open houses and special events for the public in 2017.” Learn more about this amazing artist at www.facebook.com/ GraceModlaStudios. OLTS NECK STUDENTS ruled the schools on May 3, 2016, as the Colts Neck School District celebrated the winners of the annual Superintendent/Principal of the Day contest, sponsored by the PTO. Four lucky students were chosen to take the helm - one at each of the three district schools and one as Superintendent. This year’s winners were first grader Amelia Thompson as Conover Road Primary School Principal, third grader Christian Radic as the Conover Road Elementary School Principal, eighth grader Taylor Benevento as Cedar Drive Middle School Principal, and fifth grader Alexander Marx, as the Superintendent of Schools. Students had the opportunity to participate in the daily functions of school administrators, learn how the schools are run, and make suggestions for improvements they would like to see in the schools. Two of the winning principals enacted an immediate “no homework” policy for the day. After making the rounds of the schools and visiting the bus depot, Superintendent of the Day Alexander Marx suggested painting one of the retired buses in the school colors, blue and gold, to serve as a spirit bus to transport school teams to events. Winners also received a special lunch with administrators and were able to choose their favorite menu items from a selection provided by the school’s food service vendor, Pomptonian. Their selections will be featured as the winner’s favorite lunch on the school menu in June. Winning students also received a commemorative plaque. “Our school principals and superintendent really make this a wonderful day for the student winners,” said Sharon Johnson, chairperson for the event, “Students love walking in their shoes for the day and learning how things are run.” This year’s contest received entries from over 160 students, and raised more than $1500 for the PTO.

K. HOVNANIAN CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL RAISES $140,000 AT
Superhero Soiree Celebration ABOVE: John K. Lloyd, FACHE, president and CEO of Meridian Health with Hometown Hero award recipient, Kyra Citron and Physician Hero award recipient, Charles K. Dadzie, M.D.
THE ANNUAL SUPERHERO SOIREE, hosted by K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, took place on April 29, 2016 at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, and raised $140,000 for pediatric palliative care. During the event, Kyra Citron, director of the Kid’s Corner at Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF), was presented with the Hometown Hero Award and Charles K. Dadzie, M.D. a pediatric pulmonologist at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, received the Physician Hero Award. The Hero awards are presented annually to honor philanthropists and leaders in the community for outstanding service to others in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Each year, proceeds from the Superhero Soiree benefit K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, ensuring the most advanced, compassionate care from birth. All funds raised at this year’s event will be dedicated to strengthening pediatric palliative care for children and their families with chronic illnesses and life-threatening medical conditions. The goal of the Pediatric Palliative Care Program at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is to add life to the child’s years, not simply years to the child’s life. “The Superhero Soiree provided an ideal opportunity to honor Kyra Citron and Dr. Charles Dadzie,” said Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, president of Jersey Shore University Medical Center. “Both honorees exemplify the definition of ‘hero’, selflessly giving of themselves to benefit others. We were delighted to present these well-deserved awards.”

EMPTY BOWLS EVENT Brought Community Together
Mil Wexler Kobrinski of Colts Neck stands with Jim Turnbull, owner of a ceramic supply company who donated all the clay for the bowls.
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
On May 14 and 15, 2016 at the JBJ Soul Kitchen on Monmouth Street in Red Bank, over 250 caring, giving individuals arrived to buy an Empty Bowl. Not just any empty bowl, but one that was lovingly made, creatively designed and on display for the purchase price of $20. Each bowl that was bought “paid it forward” for someone in need of a meal in the Soul Kitchen. The bowl is a reminder that there is someone somewhere who goes without food. At press time, a final tally for the event was not available. Event Coordinator Mil Wexler Kobrinski of Colts Neck did say, “At last count, we had approximately 300 meals that will be ‘paid forward’ as a result of this event.” Kobrinski noted that visitors came from all over the area. “A couple from England who were visiting came off the train, wandered to the event, and bought a bowl. Most of the sponsors came on May 14, such as Jim Turnbull from Ceramic Supply, Neil McDevitt from Holiday Express, and Alexa from Capital Lighting.” Several teens who made bowls at The Teen Festival came to the event. “Almost all of the people/artists glazing the bowls came and bought back the ones they had glazed!” she said. “The 620 bowls on display were really quite amazing and there was such a variety of shapes, styles and
38
sizes. One of the volunteer students from Brookdale put bowls in between the vegetables growing in the raised beds and they looked like flowers,” said Kobrinski. Although Jon Bon Jovi did not attend, Kobrinski said that according to the Soul Kitchen’s Manager Marylou, he was in constant contact to see how everything was going. The proceeds from the Empty Bowls two-day event were divided between the Soul Kitchen and The Art Alliance. The Art Alliance is a non-profit community art gallery and organization that is run by its members and through donations. “The members of the Art Alliance were most of the artists that glazed all the bowls for the event,” said Kobrinski. Mil Wexler Kobrinski, Monmouth Arts and The Art Alliance partnered with the Soul Kitchen in order to bring this event to the public and to raise awareness of hunger right in our own community. Laura Greenstone of The Art Alliance commented, “The mission of ‘Empty Bowls,’ of bringing a community of artists together to create public awareness about food insecurity, was realized with the success of the second annual fundraiser. The event proved that ‘art and soul’ can make a difference. We are already starting to develop plans for next year and appreciate the efforts
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
of so many volunteers, artists, and supporters who donated.” Arts Education Manager Manda Gorsegner of Monmouth Arts was unable to attend and sent coworker Danielle Accera. She said, “The atmosphere outdoors was relaxed and inviting. People were greeted with free healthy bites, which was really welcoming. There was a good turnout during the time I was there.” Kobrinski summed up the event. “It has been a very rewarding experience working with so many people creating pottery bowls and creating friendships along the way. The ‘pot parties’ where we made and glazed the pots, reminded me of quilters who would meet and take turns working on a quilt, each person making a small patch and then finally having a completed beautiful quilt. At the event itself, there were stories to tell about almost each bowl! I remembered the person who made or glazed the bowl and would tell the person buying the bowl about them. Each bowl went through at least three to four artists/ students. The staff at the Soul Kitchen was amazing, everyone was helpful, delicious appetizers were served and all in all – they were two great days!”

THE LADIES BIG AND FANCY HAT CONTEST PARTICIPANTS
COLTS NECK LIONS CLUB
Sponsored 10th Wine Tasting & Kentucky Derby Fundraiser STORY SUSAN MURPHY
COLTS NECK LIONS CLUB hosted its tenth Annual
Wine Tasting and Kentucky Derby Charity Fundraiser on May 7, 2016 at the Bucks Mill Park Community Center in Colts Neck. Over 40 wines were available for guests to sample during the walk-around wine tasting where they had the opportunity to speak with each of the wine representatives. Event Coordinator Jim Fitzpatrick said the representatives were coordinated by Joe Danek and Mihir Patel of Colts Neck Wine and Liquors. “Joe has been working with the Lions for 10 years on this event.” The Fundraiser also included a variety of food supplied by several local eateries and a silent auction featuring items donated by local businesses. The traditional Ladies Big and Fancy Hat Contest is one of the highlights of the event. There were nine participants this year. The first and second place winners were selected by the audience, said Fitzpatrick. First place went to two-year-old Emma French, daughter of David and Jamie Ann French of Colts Neck. Second place winner was Jennifer Nangano of Freehold. Colts Neck Lions Club members John Mezzasalma and Kevin Knecht worked with DirectTV so that guests could watch the 142nd Kentucky Derby live on a10-foot screen as 20 thoroughbreds raced to the finish line. Prior to the race, everyone had an opportunity to select their favorite horse and prizes were awarded.

Fitzpatrick, who has coordinated the Wine Tasting for two years now, said, “First of all, the support we received from the Colts Neck business community was exceptional - from printing promotional material and contributing gifts for auction, to the services needed to pull off such a big event. It really is a town community effort and the Lions Club appreciates everyone’s help. Second, it is an event that brings the community of Colts Neck together for an afternoon of fun and neighborly activity. For the children who attended, Clyde the donkey was on hand to pet and take pictures with. Many people who travel Heyers Mill Road are familiar with the sight of Clyde on his walks with owners, Tom and Veronica Sullivan.” Past President Andy Lotano said, “The wine tasting started as a way for our club to meet a goal of $25,000 over a five-year period to raise money for Sight First. Lions International raised millions of dollars to fight River Blindness in Africa. I'm happy to say we raised the $25,000 in only four years and met our commitment thanks to the generosity of the many people who come to sample our wines and watch the Derby.” Current President Justin Lotano said, “The event as a whole was a huge success. We want to thank all those who attended as well as sponsored the event and we look forward to building on it for many years to come.” Fitzpatrick and the Colts Neck Lions Club thanked the businesses in town that supported the event with financial funding, Silent Auction items, or their business services. A special thanks to Colts Neck Wine & Liquors, to the wine vendors, and to Thom Hennessey of the Colts Neck Recreation Department. Fitzpatrick noted that the proceeds from this event will be distributed to the more than 10 charities that the Lions support. The Colts Neck Lions Club appreciates everyone who attended and hope to see more of the community come out next year to support this fundraising event. It is always the same time every year – the first Saturday in May.

Ranney School’s Class of 2016 Garners Impressive List of College Acceptances
Ranney School’s Class of 2016 has garnered an exceptional list of college acceptances, including to six of the eight Ivy League institutions, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In fact, the 78-member class was admitted into 14 of the top 25 nationally ranked universities by U.S. News & World Report’s Carnegie classification and had three female Division 1 athletic recruitments. Beyond these impressive stats, Ranney’s pending graduates are thrilled to be attending colleges they know are the best fit for them. The school’s nationally acclaimed College Guidance Office takes pride in its individualized, family-based, “right fit” approach to college counseling—an approach that aligns with the independent school’s overall mission to value, nur-
ture and engage each and every child and his/ her unique self. When students enter the Upper School in ninth grade, faculty and college counselors get to know the students, as well as their families, deeply. They gain a solid sense of the types of colleges and universities in which students will thrive going forward, and they provide the advantage of helping students to begin college planning during their freshmen year. “We advise ninth-grade families on courses, extracurricular activity options, summer plans and standardized test preparation,” explains Dr. Nick Accrocco, Co-Director of the College Guidance Office. “Once our students become upperclassmen, we guide them and their parents through individualized college searches, and we offer programs that help them understand what to expect at each stage of the process.” For example, as part of its advising program, Ranney’s College Guidance Office provides chaperoned trips to half a dozen college campuses each year, a series of parent workshops on paying for college, a semester-long college seminar for juniors and seniors, an annual Mock Admissions Evening, an alumni panel on collegiate student life, and an annual on-campus college fair with representation from more than 80 admissions representatives. As a result of this approach, 100% of Ranney graduates attend four-year colleges and universities year after year, and between 70 and 80% are historically admitted to their first or second choice school. Kitchen Tour
Shines Despite the Rain
D
espite the gloomy forecast, close to 500 guests broke out their umbrellas to tour eight stunning homes and visit the tasting room of the beautiful 4JG’s Vineyards. Tour goers enjoyed an array of distinctive kitchens and home décor, while sampling delicious local cuisine from area chefs and restaurants. “Our event is so special because it offers such a wonderfully diverse mix of decor styles,” said Laurie Manhire, local interior designer and co-chair of the tour. “Guests can experience modern, streamlined spaces and elegant, old world inspired kitchens all on the same tour.” Highlights of the tour included a stunning whole house transformation, the latest in kitchen remodels, family friendly spaces, and exquisite design details. Wine cellars, bars and entertaining spaces were also featured on the tour. Many of the lovely outdoor spaces had to be viewed from indoors due to the inclement weather. Tour guests did not go hungry with the delicious culinary offerings in the tour homes. The feast began with delicious doughnuts from DOCO, the Donut & Coffee Company and coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts at the ticket pickup location and ended with a wine tasting at 4JG’s Vineyards. Along the route, guests could sample saucy shrimp over parmesan polenta from Chef Covas Catering, vegetable frittata from Via45, spring peas with lemon mint and guanciale from Ama Ristorante, Caesar salad in wonton cups from Gourmet Barbara, eggplant parmesan from Brioso Ristorante, carrot ginger soup from Restaurant Nicholas, beet hummus from Hello Chef, and a selection of Cuban and avocado tartines from Over Easy Kitchen. To satisfy their sweet craving, guests enjoyed an iced tea bar and scones from Sweet Tease Café and Bakery, coffee cake from Sweet Little Buttercups, decorated cookies from the Jersey Cookie Girl, tiramisu from Chef Covas Catering, and apple cider and doughnuts from Delicious Orchards. An added treat on the tour was meeting guest chef Lauren Van Liew of Chef Covas Catering, before she competed (and won!) the Food Network’s Chopped competition on May 10, 2016. Interior designers and florists decorated the dining tables in each home to complement the décor and create a festive atmosphere for guests. This year’s guest designers included the China Closet, Greenhouse Gallery Florist, Jo Malone, the Little Fish Company, Mulberry Market, Nancyanne Miklos Interior Design, Sayrewoods Floral and Event Design, Well-Designed Interiors, and West Elm. “Although the weather was not on our side, these beautiful kitchens and the fabulous food tastings certainly were,” noted PTO President Justine Buzzetta. “We were thrilled to have such a wonderful turnout on such an ugly day. Our homeowners took the weather in stride and we are so grateful they shared their beautiful homes with us.”

A cool, rainy day did not dampen
the spirits of the hardy home enthusiasts who turned out for the 2016 Colts Neck Kitchen Tour on May 6, 2016.
On behalf of the Colts Neck PTO and school community, Buzzetta thanked the Colts Neck families who graciously opened their homes for the day: Amplo Family, Bartolomeo Family, D’Eletto Family, Giunco Family, Hannan Family, Klein Family, Lucas Family, Mangold Family, and Papetti Family. Buzzetta also commended Pam Molloy and John Orrico for their support of the tour. “We appreciate each and every business who supported the tour by placing an ad or sponsoring a home,” added Buzzetta, recognizing tour sponsors Avalon Flooring, Clockworks Homes, Community Magazine, Design Line Kitchens, Design NJ, J. Costantin Architecture, JLC Management, The Journal NJ, Living In Media, PMI International Stone Importers, ShoreTV NJ, and Traffic Safety Service. The 2016 tour committee was led by Justine Buzzetta, who ran the advertising sales team; Laurie Manhire, who served as the homeowner liaison; Colleen Procyk, who led the marketing and PR effort; and Jessica Mangold and Amy Neff, who organized the culinary offerings. Sarah Pisani designed the fresh new logo for the tour. Stephanie Collura designed the beautiful color program, which was written by Colleen Procyk and featured photography by Jacki Kronstedt of Family Tree Photography. Josephine Agliata assisted with ad design. Tara Buss and Laurie Manhire worked with area designers to source tablescapes. Nancy Morin coordinated ticket sales. Danielle Gibson organized the advertising, and Patricia Pecoraro assisted with sales and event signage. Other dedicated committee members included Courtney McCormick, Marian Castner, and January Nicoletta. Special thanks goes out to Mulberry Market for handling in person ticket sales, Rachel Grant from Designer Greetings for ad design, and all the volunteers who served as tour guides for the day, including representatives from Coldwell Banker of Holmdel/Colts Neck, Robert DeFalco Realty, and Orrico Realty. Proceeds from the tour are expected to exceed $25,000 and will be used to fund PTO sponsored academic and cultural programs for the children of the Colts Neck Schools. PTO members will vote on these learning initiatives at the June Meeting. In the meantime, the kitchen tour committee is hard at work looking for ways to improve the experience for guests for the next Colts Neck Kitchen Tour, anticipated in 2018.

Village School Celebrates National Arbor Day
I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree … COLTS NECK HIGH SCHOOL BUSINESS STUDENTS SHINE AT DECA INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION IN NASHVILLE
DECA Nationals was held in Nashville, TN from April 23 through April 27, 2016 - with over 15,000 high school students competing from across the country and across the world. Colts Neck High School was able to advance 10 DECA members to the National Conference who had competed in Regional and State events this past year. Bree Parker, a junior at CNHS, was awarded top case study score and top role play score and placed top 8 while competing against a total of 135 finalists. Overall, all of the students received a great experience in presenting their business ideas to business professionals or by developing interview skills and all were able to show great pride in their accomplishment. DECA is an international association of high school and college students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and sales and service. Founded in 1945, DECA has impacted the lives of millions of students, educators, school administrators and business professionals and identifies a remarkable experience in the preparation of emerging leaders and entrepreneurs. DECA is organized into two unique student divisions each with programs designed to address the learning styles, interest and focus of its members. The High School Division includes 200,000 members in 3,500 schools in 12 countries. The Collegiate Division includes over 15,000 members in 275 colleges and universities. DECA organized around an ambitious goal: to improve education and career opportunities for students interested in careers in business and entrepreneurship - and from the results, it looks like they are off to a great start. Led by DECA advisor Cindy Bravaco, the students approached the conference as a serious professional development opportunity and they will reap the rewards of the skills learned in the future. Students obtained 21st Century Skills in the areas of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity while solving business issues or by creating new products. DECA would like to thank The Colts Neck Business Association for their support and generosity to Colts Neck High School and the DECA and Business program. They are great partners in this goal of producing great future leaders and look forward to that relationship, the program and the students growing.

The Village School Go-Green Committee, led by Assistant Vice Principal Jessica Vierschilling and PSA member Christine Bowden, work with students throughout the year to educate them about the benefits of recycling and protecting the Earth. On April 29, 2016 Village School hosted a special celebration in honor of Arbor Day where students showcased their talents and knowledge of this important occasion through artwork, poetry and music to parents and community leaders. Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholder and Holmdel resident Serena DiMaso, Holmdel Deputy Mayor Greg Buontempo, Holmdel Committee Member Pat Impreveduto and Board of Education member Victoria Flynn joined the students for a special tree planting ceremony at Village School. Principal Brian Schillaci notes how the trees planted each year at Village School creates a more welcoming environment for the school district and connects students to the benefits of contributing in a positive manner to the environment. Freeholder DiMaso read students the proclamation of the Board of Chosen Freeholders in honor of Arbor Day and explained to the students the benefits of Arbor Day events. “The value of planting trees isn’t always known. This simple act symbolizes faith that the tree will grow, provide a wildlife habitat, control erosion, and give shelter from the sun and wind. It is a pleasure to visit the schools and see the enthusiasm these students have for Arbor Day and protecting the environment.”

Lincroft Elementary School put on a great show, “The Pied Piper’s Wild West Show” at Middletown High School South. It was an entertaining and funny, where every student did an amazing job. Theater week is an event sponsored by Lincroft PTA, in which the 4th and 5th grade students can participate. Altogether there were 51 students who choose to participate in the annual show. The production company is Taubenslag Productions, which is the original creator of Theater Week for schools. All of the Theater Week shows are original musical productions written specifically to teach a valuable lesson while also being fun to perform: Lincroft Elementary School’s message was to always make good on your promises and to be kind to those who are kind to you. Each show is designed around life lessons such as anti-bulling, accepting each other’s differences, trying your best in life or how to be a good friend. Each musical show is written to include many characters; this ensures there is a role for every child who wants to participate and they can try out for any of the available roles. Everyone involved in the show takes home a positive message. Taubenslag produces a full-scale musical production in just five days. The students receive only the words and songs and they practice for two hours each day and by Friday they are able to present a musical production for all to watch. A special thanks goes out to Jennifer Abbes and Elizabeth Yeserski Co-Chairs of Theater Week, who did a great job of pulling this show together in one week. Jennifer Abbes said, “I was amazed at how dedicated the children were during Theater Week, they started the week not even knowing the story and with the help of Michael Taubenslag, they were able to learn their lines and all of the songs in only four days. The children worked so incredibly hard all week and were able to put on a fantastic performance both in school and at night for their families. It is truly a fun week and Elizabeth and I are grateful to be a part of it and watch the children come out of their shells and act their hearts out.”

St. Benedict Catholic School Helps Beautify Senior Living Center St. Benedict Catholic School (SBS) in Holmdel, participated in a beautification project at a local nursing home and assisted living facility, The Atrium Senior Living of Matawan. Several St. Benedict School students spent the day planting and sprucing up an outdoor patio area, which was in need of new planting for the residents who enjoy the outdoor space, and which will no doubt bring joy to them as they spend time on the patio throughout the spring and summer. In addition to planting,
the students presented the Atrium residents with a poster-size photograph in which all 455 SBS students and the faculty filled a heart shape as a sign of good wishes for the residents of Atrium, along with hand written cards from St. Benedict R.E. students. Already in the works for next years’ service day is an art project where SBS students will paint festive scenes on ceiling tiles that will be installed in the rooms of bedridden residents to create some cheer in their rooms.

The Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and surrounding areas held the final event for the calendar year at the lovely newly renovated Beach Tavern in the Channel Club Marina in Monmouth Beach. Members and guests enjoyed a four-course lunch. Kathy Miles of the Monmouth County SPCA was the guest speaker and she brought her therapy dog Taka. Ms. Miles explained to the women how to determine if one’s dog could qualify as a therapy dog. She said that temperament is very important along with an openness toward training. Therapy dogs are not the same as service dogs. Therapy dogs are used in nursing homes and hospitals to help cheer people up and are just petted and hugged. Not a bad job! Club President Sue Quincannon said that the women in the Club truly responded to the speaker and her therapy dog. “This was quite an interesting program. Not only are they using these dogs to visit nursing homes and hospitals but they are finding that the dogs are very good for children who are having problems reading. The kids are not intimidated by the dogs and they are able to read to them. There are a lot of positive things happening with this program. I was quite taken back with the program that they are offering at the ASPCA in Monmouth County.” It seems that Kathy Miles and Taka made quite an impression on the women of the Club. The Newcomers and Neighbors Club will resume general meetings in September, the club provides a social network for area residents and although it is not a charity organization, often donates to local Kathy Miles, from the Monmouth worthy groups such as the Food Bank.
