“Summer sun, something’s begun...” Growing up here, there has always been something special about the month of June. Summer unofficially began Memorial Day Weekend and will be followed by three months of fun in the sun; days at the beach; parties by the pool; day trips to Great Adventure; twilight concerts at the Arts Center; and lazy nights of fireworks and lightning bugs. In Monmouth County we’ve added wineries and breweries, festivals and fairs, incredible golf courses, and every type of event imaginable! There’s always something fun and exciting to do in your neighborhood or the one next door. This month in our pages we bring you a smattering of those activities to enjoy. In this issue you’ll also find special pictures you won’t see anywhere else. We were fortunate to have front row seats to both the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival and The New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Both events took place in Asbury Park in May, and we were a proud sponsor. What an honor to support events that put a spotlight on the amazing talent that comes from our little, yet powerful, state of New Jersey! Highlights for me were meeting the one and only Buzz Aldren, and hearing Gloria Gaynor sing I Will Survive to a crowd on our feet and cheering! Watching Bruce Springsteen induct his friend Steven Van Zandt into the Hall of Fame was also a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we wanted to share that moment with you by placing it on our cover. Few things remind me of summer more than the E-Street Band and Asbury Park. One of our Meet Your Neighbor features this month allows us to give you an inside look into The Colts Neck StillHouse coming soon, where spirits will be distilled and served by Colts Neck resident Geoff Karch (page 22). It is sure to become a favorite destination. “Oh, those summer nights...” Enjoy them. They’ll go too fast and be gone too quickly. If the chance comes, take the afternoon off; eat the ice cream; try the yoga with the goats (you can read about that on page 68); call that friend you’ve been meaning to; and by all means get out in the sunshine and enjoy everything Monmouth County has to offer! Until next month,

Designer Handbag Event Raises Needed Funds for VNA’s Maternal Child Health Programs Over 260 women stepped out in their chicest cocktail attire to attend the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Children’s Auxiliary’s sixth bi-annual “The Power of the Purse” Ladies’ Night Out and Purse Auction on May 3. Hosted during one of the first beautiful nights of spring, the event raised over $55,000 for the VNA’s Children and Family Health Institute programs. Having raised $230,000 in total since its inception in 2008, the fundraiser has grown each year. Held at the scenic Riverhouse at Rumson Country Club, “The Power of the Purse” invited guests to take a chance and bid on more than 100 items includ-
ing purses, handbags, beauty packages, fitness classes, jewelry and more. The evening’s silent auction showcased luxury designer handbags, many of which are not readily available in stores or online. Before announcing the winners of the handbags, Bridget Murphy, the VNA’s Chief Philanthropy Officer, invited guests to watch a video featuring a patient family who receives case management and health care services from the organization. Featuring Neptune resident Laura Gaedt, and her VNA case manager Patricia Sciurba-Murphy, the video details Laura’s experience navigating the health

care services available for her son who has physical disabilities as well as the significant role that Patricia continues to play in the Gaedts’ lives. “To see everyone in attendance so captivated by the story of one family’s struggle to find healthcare for their child is remarkable,” said. Murphy. “We are grateful to all of the volunteers, attendees, sponsors and supporters of this year’s Power of the Purse — our most successful to date. It is their support that enables the VNA to continue making a difference for families like the Gaedts. Last year the VNA cared for over 53,000 patient families like the Gaedts.”
Launched in 2013, the VNA Children and Family Health Institute is a strategic initiative to strengthen, enhance and improve visibility and access to community-based care for at-risk children and their families. The Institute’s “no wrong front door” approach is comprised of 17 unique grantfunded programs that ensure the health and well-being of individuals and families. The Institute’s programs help families, regardless of their circumstances, connect to health care, as well as navigate the complexities of the public and private health services and assistance available to them.

DIVORCE TALK: GENDER EQUALITY BY PET E R C . PA R A S , E S Q.
Peter C. Paras
is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. Selected as "Super Lawyer" by NJ Monthly 2006 – 2018. Included in Best Lawyers in America 2015 – 2018 For more information please see the firm’s website at www.par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.
Fifty years ago divorce laws in New Jersey followed a much different social convention than they do now. Divorces were only granted if your spouse was “at fault”, having been guilty of desertion, extreme cruelty, or adultery. And if both spouses were at fault, the defense of condonation prevented either party from getting a divorce from the other, thereby sentencing the couple to life together, without parole. Now, a divorce can be based on irreconcilable differences, a ground which requires no finger pointing and which is considered a no-fault ground. And condonation no longer exists, thereby allowing each spouse to be divorced from the other. Although the change in the way divorces are granted is highly representative of changing social standards, perhaps the more significant reflections of changing social mores came with the advent of the women’s movement and the unabated forward march of women in the workplace and in society in general. In 1971 New Jersey adopted equitable distribution as a way to apportion assets and liabilities in divorce. Before that, assets (and liabilities) would belong to the spouse (usually the husband) in whose name the asset was titled. Equitable distribution was the state’s recognition that the non-working spouse (usually the wife in those days) may have contributed to the acquisition of the marital estate in non-economic ways, e.g., caring for the family and providing emotional support to the breadwinner. Over the years, our statutes have been revised to change gender stereotypical pronouns to more gender neutral language. For example, the child support statute refers to the parents’ obligations, not just the
father’s, as it used to. Alimony is now paid from one “party” to the other, not from the husband to the wife. Case law has followed suit. The “tender years presumption”, which assumed that a child six years old or younger was better off with his mother, no longer exists. And parents in custody disputes now start on equal footing, regardless of the child’s age. As fathers have become increasingly more involved in their children’s lives and upbringing, shared custody arrangements (frequently even 50/50) have become more commonplace, often resulting in more highly compensated mothers paying child support to less well paid fathers. This is a natural consequence of women’s march toward equal pay and equality in the workplace, but frequently requires an adjustment in thinking. An even more difficult pill to swallow, one that men have choked on for years, but with a sense of resigned acceptance, is the reality that more women find themselves compelled to pay alimony to their exhusbands. As women get ever closer to gender equality, they will share more of its benefits, but also more of its burdens. Although this makes sense to most people on an intellectual level, it can, quite understandably, require some getting used to on an emotional level. A recent survey of its members by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers found that 54% reported an increase in the number of mothers paying child support over the last three years, while 45% reported an increase in the number of women paying alimony. And 78% reported an increase in shared custody arrangements. It is clear that gender equality is here to stay - for better or for worse.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 310,444 breast augmentations were performed nationwide in 2016. This was second only to liposuction (414,335) and followed by tummy tuck surgery (181,540). Why are so many women seeking breast enhancement surgery? There is no one single reason. Each case is very personal and based on the individual’s body and self image. However, speaking generally, the most popular goals are to increase the size, change the shape of the woman’s breasts, or to improve symmetry between the breasts. Women who are interested in this procedure before pregnancy are typically looking to increase breast size or symmetry. Post-pregnancy, women are commonly seeking to restore shape or lost volume. After childbirth, the breasts can bear significant resemblance to the deflated appearance that results from weight loss. Breast implants can also be used to form an “hourglass” figure by creating balance between the chest and hips. No matter the situation, women who seek these procedures typically share a common desire to feel more confident about their appearance in and out of clothes. So, how do you go about getting breast implants? If you’ve been considering a breast augmentation, consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During your consultations, you’ll want to discuss your desires for the size, feel, and appearance of your breasts. A helpful tip is to bring magazine photos, printouts or screenshots on your phone with you to show what you’re hoping to look like when the procedure and recovery are finished. Your surgeon will also educate you on the various options you have for implants. Do you want them to be saline or silicone gel-filled, round or teardrop-shaped, or have a textured or smooth surface? He or she will discuss these options with you as well as different methods for performing the surgery and how implants can be placed above or below the muscle. The type of implants and their placement will be decided based on your existing proportions and how best to achieve your desired outcome. Choose a surgeon based on their reputation for safety and their results. Read from patient reviews and seek out “before” and “after” photos of their work. Make sure the pictures you brought in with you look like the “after” pictures in their portfolio. As for price, there are plenty of financing options available for this procedure and many are interest-free for a period of time. The surgery can be performed in an accredited, private surgery center or at an outpatient hospital facility. Most likely, you’ll be under general anesthesia and asleep the whole time and can return home same-day. The healing period requires wearing a compression bra. After approximately one week, you should be able to return to your job. Soreness and swelling are common for a few weeks after surgery, so get plenty of rest to ensure optimal healing. It will take several months for your implants to settle and to see a more complete result. For more information, contact Samra Plastic Surgery at 732.739.2100 or visit samraplasticsurgery.com

Monmouth County SPCA Dog Walk & Pet Fair Raises Over $110,000
We’re here if you need us this summer.
Proceeds to Benefit the Homeless Animals of Monmouth County
24-HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE Doctors on premises 24 hours a day Appointments available 7 days a week SPECIALTY CARE BY REFERRAL ONLY
The Monmouth County SPCA raised over $110,000 during its Annual Spring Dog Walk & Pet Fair on April 28 at Brookdale Community College. Celebrating 24 years of Paws Walking for a Cause, the event, held in conjunction with corporate partner Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, proved a monumental success for the organization. The funds raised will be allocated to treating the thousands of homeless animals that pass through the SPCA shelter every year. Over 1,000 people and their pets convened on the Brookdale Campus in the pristine spring weather to enjoy the festivities and support the mission of the MCSPCA. The Monmouth County SPCA welcomed back Jimmy Steal as the event emcee with The Wag as the musical guest. A new attraction this year was Merck, who offered onsite microchipping for dogs. VCA Animal Hospitals was another major sponsor this year and have locations all across New Jersey. Over 100 vendors displayed their unique products, with many donating 10% of their sales back to the shelter. One lucky Long Branch resident took over $9,000 home through the 50/50 Raffle, but the luckiest of all were the 8 dogs that found their forever homes at the event! Next year will be the 25th Anniversary for the event and there are already special plans in store to celebrate a quarter-century milestone.

Renovating your home is exciting, but it can also create plenty of chaos. Fortunately, taking a few simple steps can help reduce the overwhelming feelings of stress as you renovate, remodel, and redecorate.
Before the renovation:
• Create a binder – Renovations include plenty of paperwork from samples to estimates and invoices. Use a threering binder to keep everything in one place and organized. Use plastic pocket sheet protectors to hold loose papers and tab dividers to make categories such as “Flooring,” “Plumbing,” “Electric,” and/or “Furniture.” • Purge, purge, purge! – Everything will have to be moved out of the space to prepare for the renovation. Use this opportunity to clear out unneeded and unwanted items. Abide by the three simplest categories: Keep, Donate, Toss. • Box up the “Keeps” in clear bins – Use large clear plastic totes to hold the rooms contents during the renovations. Sort items into categories such as “Office Supplies,” “Bakeware,” or “Exercise Equipment.” Sorting this way makes it easy to find something when needed, and the lids help keep construction dust out.
During the renovation:
• Have contact info handy – Keep a list of all contractors and suppliers in the front of your renovation binder. You will have questions throughout the process and having this information readily available will be helpful. • Repurpose other spaces – If the kitchen is being redone, set up a kitchenette area in your dining room with a microwave, paper plates, and snacks on hand. If the family room or den is being redone, temporarily relocate movies and video games to the living room for entertainment. • Ugh! The dust! – Even minor home renovations create a large amount of construction dust. Attach plastic sheeting to doorways and walls near the work to help trap the dust. This isn’t foolproof, but it is better than leaving everything unprotected. Katie Tracy is a Certified Professional Organizer®, Simplicity Expert®, and owner of Simple Spaces Professional Home Organizers. She and her team help clients reclaim their spaces and bring simplicity back to their lives. Collier Youth Services Gala Honored Schoor Family Foundation
Honorees Howard Schoor and Bill Rubenstein photo credit: tom zapcic photography
collier youth services hosted its annual fundraising gala, “A Time and Place for Us,” on May 10 at Addison Park in Aberdeen. According to Sister Debbie Drago, executive director of Collier Youth Services, Honorees the Schoor Family Foundation and Bill Rubenstein have been long-time supporters of Collier’s initiatives. “Whether it be Collier High School, Collier Middle School, Kateri Day Camp, or our residential program for young women,” Sister Debbie shares, “They have recognized the life-changing impact of Collier’s services.” Upon his first visit to Collier High School, 2018 gala honoree Howard Schoor commented that a single word best expresses his initial impression... “dedication”- of the Sisters, the staff and the teachers to the children of Collier. Over time that single word is still appropriate.” Initially Schoor was asked to come to the school as a request for pro bono professional services in 1985. After a few visits to the facilities and a couple of meetings with the Sisters, Schoor, from a Jewish family, began his mutually rewarding journey with Collier Youth Services. Collier Youth Services Foundation was formed and Howard and Fran hosted the initial “A Chance to Grow” gala at their home. When asked about being honored Schoor responded, “Collier Youth Services is so profound and valuable. Accordingly, helping Collier is personally very rewarding.” Collier Youth Services is a non-profit organization that provides educational, residential, and recreational programs to young people in need. Newcomers & Neighbors Club Hosts Luncheon on the River
Holmdel Dentist Receives Monheim Service Award
The Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel, and surrounding areas held a luncheon at the beautiful Rum Runner Restaurant in Sea Bright this May. Members and guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, delicious buffet lunch, and old-fashioned desert ice cream bar. Entertainment was provided by Marion Grodin, the daughter of actor and comedian, Charles Grodin. She had the audience "in stitches" with her hilarious comedy skit! The views from the wall of windows were marvelous, the food was excellent and the afternoon with friends was priceless! The Newcomers and Neighbors Club’s general meetings will resume in September. The club was established 40 years ago to provide a social network for new residents of Colts Neck and Holmdel, but has morphed into a social club that includes new and longtime residents of both towns, as well as residents of the surrounding area. The Club also supports and donates to local groups such as the Ocean and Monmouth County Food Bank. For information on the club and to join, call 732.577.0875 or 732.530.9543.
The American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists awarded its Monheim Service Award to Dr. Lee Lichtenstein of Holmdel in May. A dentist anesthesiologist who has served on the executive board for nearly a quarter century, Lichtenstein has also participated in numerous committees within the organization. “It’s an honor to be the 2018 recipient of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists’ highest accolade,” said Lichtenstein. “The Leonard Monheim Service Award accords distinction to the chosen member who has given extensively of devotion, time, and commitment to the organization. I feel humbled to join the list of my esteemed, hardworking predecessors and grateful to be in their company.” The Monheim Service Award recognizes dentists who have benefited the dental profession by making outstanding contributions to the discipline of anesthesiology. This distinguished service award is named for Leonard M. Monheim, D.D.S. whose many contributions to the art and science of anesthesiology and visionary leadership helped lay the foundation for a specialty in anesthesiology for dentistry.

This month, Fulfill (formerly The FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties) will be participating in the 2018 Summer Food Service Program. The initiative provides free breakfasts and lunches to children from lowincome households who are attending summer recreational programs. Fulfill is sponsoring twenty programs located within Monmouth and Ocean Counties in places where children ages eighteen and younger can receive a meal in a safe, organized environment. Participating sites can include summer camp programs at schools, churches, and community centers where children are enrolled. There are also open sites where any child can go to receive a meal, regardless of enrollment. Free breakfasts and lunches are distributed daily to each site where the participating children will receive meals. Last summer, there were 59,000 meals distributed.

Wendi Cassidy, Fulfill’s Network Engagement Team Manager, said, “It’s such an important program because it really helps fill the gap between the school year and when children are used to getting their meals during the day.” This summer, Fulfill prepares to help provide meals to over one thousand children in the local community. These programs are critical for many of these children, as they would otherwise be struggling with food insecurity throughout the summer months.

Meet Your Neighbor
Chef David Burke Story: Cathy Padilla • Photos: Cody Cutter
Award-winning chef David Burke has become one of the most-recognized culinary experts in the world through hard work and cultivating an extensive professional background through working in kitchens across many cultures. His diverse career is filled with many exciting and unique experiences, including numerous television appearances, owning renowned restaurants, philanthropic work, creating patented inventions, and authoring cookbooks. This same renowned chef is the man behind the new Drifthouse Restaurant in Sea Bright. A Jersey boy since childhood, Burke grew up in Monmouth County eating pizza at the local Romeo’s Pizzeria in Hazlet. With soul of a true foodie, he has a playful flair for his dishes. He feels just as at home serving the President of the United States in his restaurant at Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. as he is serving his GourmetPops line of cheesecake lollipops. Drifthouse is Burke’s first oceanfront offering - a New American restaurant opened in April in partnership with the Stavola Family, owners of Driftwood Cabana Club. Open year-round to the public, Drifthouse serves dinner daily with happy hour promotions at the bar and lounge. Chef Robert Burke, David’s brother and colleague of 30 years, leads the kitchen. Burke has been featured on television, including appearances on two seasons of Bravo's Top Chef Masters, Iron Chef America, a guest spot on the Every Day with Rachael Ray show, NBC’s TODAY Show, Bloomberg's small-business television series The Mentor, and more. He is currently developing concepts for two more television shows.
A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a student at École Lenôtre Pastry School in Plaisir, France, Burke has worked with legendary chefs in France and New York. His mastery of French culinary technique and his unique American creativity were confirmed at an early age when he received Three Stars from the New York Times. Burke was then chosen by his peers to represent the USA at The International Culinary Competition and won France’s coveted Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Diplôme d’Honneur. He is the only American to ever achieve this honor. Burke also won the Nippon Award for Excellence from the government of Japan for his overall skill and technique. Burke is also actively involved in culinology, an approach to blending culinary arts and food technology. As a culinary pioneer, Burke’s innovations and revolutionizing techniques appear on menus all over the world. Burke owns the patent for the unique process by which he uses pink Himalayan salt to dry-age his steaks for up to 100 days. Always looking for a new culinary adventure, Burke was chosen to head food operations at Garden City Hotel in Garden City, New York this spring. He is also joining the Adelphi Hotel in Saratoga Springs as culinary director, overseeing the hotel’s restaurants. Here is our exclusive Meet Your Neighbor with Chef David Burke: Where I grew up: I was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Hazlet, Monmouth County. What I love about Monmouth County: The diversity of the people My favorite local restaurant as a kid: Romeo’s Pizzeria, on Union Avenue in Hazlet. How I first became interested in cooking: I worked as a dishwasher on Route 35 at a Holiday Inn. What it’s like to work with my brother: My brother and I have worked together in the past 30 years, on and off, we are like peas and carrots.
How I feel about having a restaurant at the Jersey Shore: I am very excited at the opportunity. I hope it will lead to other opportunities for this restaurant group. It’s a great layout and my parents are 10 miles away. I’m going to serve many local products, it’s a preferred location for fish and farms. How it feels to be the only American to ever win France’s coveted Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Diplome d’Honneur: I am exceptionally proud of the award. I represented the United States in an International culinary competition, we showed up and opened a can of Whoop-ass. I hold two patents in the culinary world: Creativity is my strength, patents protect my ideas. What’s coming next: I am developing two culinary shows for TV. They will feature plenty of travel, work, humor, and food drama. In 2016 you were named the New Jersey Red Cross Clara Barton Humanitarian of the Year: It’s not about the award, but the recognition is appreciated. I am in a position to help others, and it’s about caring for others in need. Favorite meal: Eggs & Peking Duck Favorite beverage non-alcoholic, and alcoholic: Coffee and Pisco Food I do not like: Anchovies
Chef Robert Burke (left) and Chef David Burke

Fabulous Forties Ball Raises Funds for Children with Cancer
O
n April 21, 2018, guests gathered at the Spring Lake Golf Club to enjoy The Ashley Lauren Foundation’s much anticipated 7th Annual Butterfly Ball “THE FABULOUS FORTIES” and raised funding and awareness for children suffering from cancer. Monica Vermeulen, Founder/CEO stated, “We are so grateful to all of our sponsors, auction donors, entertainers and guests for their incredible support. Guests enjoyed the Big Band sound of The Ed Conte Orchestra, our Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin impersonators and our Andrew Sisters singers along with a beautiful 1941 Cadillac Convertible that was on display. We had an amazing trio of honorees which included Jeremy Grunin (Hope Award), Joe Leone Introna (Humanitarian Award) and Lori Kirsch (Volunteer of the Year Award). It was our distinct pleasure to present all of their amazing accomplishments in our communities.” The goal of The Ashley Lauren Foundation is to ease the journey when pediatric cancer is diagnosed by providing direct financial assistance (household bills, medications not paid through medical insurance, traveling expenses to and from hospitals, funeral expenses, etc.); material assistance (food, clothing, household items); emotional support (for the entire family); seasonal parties for the children and their families (Spring Party at the Boardwalk, Summerfest, Harvest Party, and Holiday Party); advocacy; “Making Dreams Come True” Program; Birthday Brigade (gifts, cake, balloons delivered personally to each child); special outings; hospital parties; holiday gifts for the children and anything else that is needed to make their lives easier and bring smiles to their faces. COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
In the heart of Lincroft, a village nestled within Middletown Township, lies the Lincroft Village Green - a six-acre public park. Originally destined for commercial development, the Green was preserved as the result of six years of tireless work by local residents, township government, and county officials. The park officially opened in 2005. Today, it serves as a dedicated open space for public use and enjoyment. The Green was always intended to provide Lincroft area residents with a community gathering place. It features picnic tables, a walking path, park benches, a bocce court, and even a Little Free Library installed by a local Boy Scout as part of his Eagle project. Over the past 13 years, the Lincroft Village Green Association, a group of local residents, volunteer to steward the Green’s use and improvements. The organization has hosted events for the community such as Picnics in the Park, movie nights, Bocce Day, the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Clean the Green, and ice cream socials. In recent years, the LVGA board of directors realized that the Green is in need of repairs and improvements if the park and community events are to continue and flourish. To that end, the LVGA has launched a capital improvement campaign which they are calling “For the Greener Good.” The campaign’s goal is to upgrade the landscape, lawn, and utilities at the park. Many of the original plantings from 2005 are now overgrown or have died, the lawn is mostly weeds, and many people cannot see the park as they drive by on Newman Springs Road. The LVGA aims to start from the ground up, literally, by focusing on the care of the lawn and landscape. To keep the grass and plants thriving, phase one of the project is focusing on the installation of a well and sprinkler system in the park. In May of 2017, the Middletown Township Committee approved a resolution authorizing installation of the irrigation system. Then, in June of that same year, over $5,000 was raised by sponsors and attendees of the 2nd Annual Lincroft Food Truck Fest and Car Show. The festival’s proceeds and the money in the existing Park Fund (funded 100% by LVGA members’ donations) was
enough to cover the installation of the new well and part of the irrigation system. In early 2018, Pickwick Well Drilling of Farmingdale installed the well; the Middletown Township Department of Public Works added the needed electrical service for the well; the main lawn was thatched, seeded and fertilized; and Garden Irrigation of Morganville installed the first phase of the sprinkler system. “Now that we have the well installed, we have a water source and can finally move to the next phase and start revitalizing the raised beds that front Newman Springs Road,” said LVGA copresident Mary Grant. “We’ve enlisted the Monmouth County Master Gardeners to help us with landscaping ideas for the beds, and they are the perfect mix of knowledge, enthusiasm, and volunteerism. We are thrilled to have their help.” “The Green has proudly benefited from countless local volunteer hours over the years,” Grant continued. “From Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, and high school students in need of volunteer hours, to residents serving on the board, members helping to run the events, and so much more. We are so grateful for our volunteers, and to the Township Parks Department which provides regular maintenance.” Despite last year’s successes with fundraising and recruiting volunteer help, the LVGA lacks sufficient funds to cover the second phase of improvements to the park. These include the additional sprinklers, new landscaping and beautification efforts in the raised beds, and planting new trees. To meet capital needs, the LVGA launched the “For the Greener Good” capital campaign with a fundraising goal of $20,000. So far, just over $4,000 has been raised. They are now calling for help from the community to raise the funds needed to complete the park improvements. Any donation, great or small, is appreciated. Donations can be made easily online at lincroft.org (via PayPal), or by mailing a check to LVGA, PO Box 101, Lincroft, NJ 07738. The LVGA is also working to plan a fundraising event for later this year (details to come!). If you can help with the fundraising event, landscaping improvements, or other efforts, LVGA would love to hear from you. Local businesses interested in sponsoring a new tree or other plantings are also encouraged to reach out. Please email Mary Grant at directorLVGA@gmail. com for more information on how you can help. The Lincroft Village Green has always been an integral part of what the LVGA as a civic organization stands for: working together to save open space, improve quality of life for residents, and provide a safe and beautiful place for all to gather. All residents of Lincroft are welcome to join the LVGA. For more information about The Lincroft Village Green Association, to donate, or join as a member, visit lincroft.org.

Summer Sun Safety Story: Hope Daniels
Can you imagine having to break the news to all beach goers that the Jersey Shore sun is too damaging for their family’s skin? You probably had the same reaction I did: “I’d rather hide out in the witness protection program and hope an enraged drooling toddler doesn’t find me with a shovel and bucket in their hand.” Let’s face it, we all have heard about the sun’s dangerous effects. However, we also know those facts won’t prevent diehard beach lovers from enjoying the sun and the surf, and well, it shouldn’t. We at the Jersey Shore know that Summertime at the sea is too much fun to pass up. That’s why I reached out to Dr. Kristine Krever, a board certified family physician who specializes in aesthetic medicine at the Center for Aesthetic Medicine at Colts Neck. From sunscreen protection do’s and don’ts to product facts and myths, here are essential tips for dodging those dangerous rays while enjoying your beach days. CM: How is sunscreen supposed to work and why should we wear it? Dr. Krever: Sunscreens work in one of two ways. There are ones that protect from harmful UV radiation by reflecting the rays away from your skin - as in the case of mineral sunscreens. Others absorb the radiation before it can make it into your skin, which are chemical sunscreens. However, it should be noted that chemical sunscreens have a limit as to how much radiation they can absorb. This means that they stop working after about two hours of exposure, even if the product is still in place (not sweated or washed off). For that reason it is imperative that these be reapplied even if you haven’t been in the water or sweating.

CM: Do brand names and price of the lotion
matter?
Dr. Krever: As long as a sunscreen is rated at 30 SPF or higher, you should choose a sunscreen based on the conditions you will be using it under and for how it feels on your skin. I personally try to avoid any product that relies on oxybenzone, as it has some long-term safety concerns. I also stay away from products that contain parabenbased preservatives or retinyl palmitate for similar reasons. I also recommend that my patients try to find a sunscreen that they like the feel, smell and look of. It won’t matter how good the quality of a sunscreen is if you won’t actually end up using it. In my opinion, it's only worth spending extra on a higher end brand when you are purchasing a sunscreen for daily use. These products need to be elegant, pleasant to wear and not necessarily water resistant. Sunscreens that will be used for full body protection on the beach or other outdoor activities should be used liberally and there are many affordable choices available that provide good protection if you search for them. CM: There is a ton of information out there about SPF. What is SPF and what does it really measure? Is there such a thing as 75+? Is there a number that can be used for an entire family or do adults, kids and babies get their own number of protection? Dr. Krever: SPF 30, when applied appropriately, blocks the vast majority of UVB rays and is sufficient for all ages. It’s important to know that SPF doesn’t reveal anything about UVA exposure. Products are typically labeled “broad spectrum” to denote UVA coverage. Increasing the SPF rating to 50 or 70 only increases the protection
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
marginally. When choosing a sunscreen for babies and children, the bigger consideration should be the ingredients used and how it is applied. Mineral blockers such as zinc and titanium are generally considered safer for young children. CM: We see so many advertisements on
sunscreen bottles nowadays. With all of these labels saying “anti-aging, sensitive, eczema, etc.,” how can a family decide which is the best one for them? Dr. Krever: In general, I try to stick with products that only focus on a single purpose. I find when products are trying to do more than one thing at once they end up falling short on all counts. So products that are intending to also repel insects, or act as a self-tanner or makeup are usually not a great choice. CM: Spray vs. Lotion. I often hear this debate. Is one better than the other? Dr. Krever: Spray sunscreens are certainly convenient for applying with less mess and can be a good choice for people with hairbearing areas that need protection. They are however, frequently under-applied and a large amount of the product is wasted and dispersed into the environment. Spray sunscreens are also almost always chemical-based which may not be the best choice, especially for children. Lotionbased sunscreens have a wider selection of ingredient types and are often the best choice, as long as they get used in the proper amounts. A shot glass worth of sunscreen is necessary for most full body applications. That means if applied correctly, a 4oz. bottle will only last four applications. If your bottle of sunscreen is lasting longer than that, you're probably not using enough.

Local Winery Guide
Destination: Wine Country A MINI GUIDE TO LOCAL WINERIES Story: Gena Ansell-Lande | Photo: Fox Hollow Vineyards in Holmdel
Besides being known for fresh corn, tomatoes, and blueberries, New Jersey is also home to fabulous wineries. Whether you are interested in learning how the grapes are harvested, how the wine is blended, or perhaps how it tastes in comparison to what you normally enjoy, touring a winery offers a behind the scenes look at how a grape transforms into a delightful beverage. However, before you go on your first or next winery tour, it’s important to follow a few important rules to ensure you have the best visit possible: Designate a driver. Have someone in your group volunteer or plan to take a car
service home. You are going to taste quite a bit of wine and all of those “small” sips do add up. Avoid scheduling your tour for late in the day. This is especially true if you are
going on a weekend. Getting to know the folks behind the bar and the winemakers themselves will give you amazing insight into the process. You may miss this opportunity during more crowded time slots. Most winemakers enjoy discussing their passion with guests so don’t be shy about asking questions.
Expand your palette. If you favor a “dry white,” consider trying something sweeter.
In fact, there is no better time to discover a new favorite then when visiting a winery. Go beyond comfort zone and try everything! Eat something before going. Wine tasting on an empty stomach is a surefire way
to get drunk faster and possibly ruin the experience for your entire crew. Drink water in between the tastings to keep yourself hydrated. Remember, it’s called wine “tasting” for a reason. This is not the time to polish off an entire bottle.
Remember to smell what you taste. Besides tasting, smell is a huge part of the
experience. Try to avoid wearing too many fragrances that could interfere with the wine’s natural aroma.
It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Because you will taste a myriad of varieties, it’s important to pace yourself. You will find buckets on the table and although it may sound disgusting, spit buckets are there for a reason. Spitting is not only welcome, but also encouraged. Believe me, those “pours” add up and spitting is an ideal way to pace yourself as you go. That way you can taste the wine without having to necessarily ingest it.

Introducing The Count Basie Center for the Arts The Name of Jazz Legend and Red Bank Native William James “Count” Basie Ascends to Represent The Sum of the Nonprofit Organization’s Work in Arts, Education and Community With construction underway on its celebrated, $26 million expansion officials announced in May at the Count Basie Theatre – the top-selling nonprofit performing arts center in New Jersey and one of the top such venues in the U.S. and world – that a new name, the Count Basie Center for the Arts, will now represent all the organization stands for. “For 34 years, the ‘Count Basie Theatre’ name has been synonymous with the region’s very best in arts and entertainment,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “Today, we raise the Basie name to represent all that this regional center for the arts stands for: our nonprofit mission of arts and education, our work in schools and the community, and all of the excellence and excitement that comes from that. Today, we are the Count Basie Center for the Arts.”
command performances for Queen Elizabeth II and President John F. Kennedy. Basie never forgot his roots, returning here in 1983 to perform a benefit concert to support building an education center at the A.M.E. Zion Church in Shrewsbury. Basie would pass away several months later in April 1984, with the theater being named in his honor later that year.
The elevation of Basie’s name preserves the building’s legacy -- and that of William James “Count” Basie, the Red Bank native whose career in jazz crisscrossed the world and put him in front of millions, including
“‘The ‘Kid from Red Bank’ was more than just a musician,” Philipson told an audience gathered for Monday night’s unveiling. “He was a symbol of creativity and talent, born in our town and famous for his many contributions
to music and culture. Tonight, we embrace his legacy into a name that better suits us as an organization with a mission to entertain, educate and inspire.” “With our groundbreaking last fall, we began our expansion on the west end of our building,” said Tom Widener, Chairman, Count Basie Center Board of Trustees. “Building a creative campus in the heart of Red Bank, with multiple buildings and continuous activity, has long been a dream of our board. It is exciting to see this dream begin to materialize.”
A NEW ER A , A NEW LOGO With the name change comes the Basie’s first new logo in decades. Called “Energy,” the logo was created by Basie Creative Director Andrew Musser, who worked with Basie board member and seasoned marketing executive Bob Chandler to convene focus groups and work with organization leaders and personnel to create the new mark. The logo colors represent the organization’s color palate, meant to mimic the gold, blue and darker tones present upon entering the historic theater. “’ENERGY’ represents the movement of our organization from the four walls of a performance hall to the greater point of a center,” Musser says. “And within that center, performances, arts education, and a diversity of artforms synergize and foster a creative community.”
THE BASIE EXPANSION The Basie’s $26 million expansion is underway on the west end of the building, which will house the previously announced Jay and Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building, as well as the Basie’s as-yet-unnamed second performance space. Construction on the east end project, which will create an expanded lobby, new concessions and restroom facilities, a new Basie members lounge, the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion and a spacious outdoor plaza, will follow.

WHAT ARE RELAXING, SWEET, AND HAVE NO SMELL?
Goats Doing Yoga, of Course!
You’ve most likely seen the videos or pictures on one of your social media accounts. Take a room full of people doing yoga and add…goats. It’s a new trend that started two years ago when a recently divorced woman named Lainey Morse discovered the goats on her Oregon farm helped her fight depression. She started having “Goat Happy Hour” each day and inviting friends to join. Her friends found the soft, gentle animals comforting, and before long a friend who is also a yoga instructor had a great idea. Morse’s first year in the Goat Yoga business brought in more than $160,000. Wildly popular, local organizations such as OASIS tlc are now having Yoga with Goats bring in money to support their causes. OASIS tlc is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote inclusion and acceptance of autistic individuals into their local communities. By establishing environmentally exemplary farm centers, they provide meaningful work, peaceful and healthy residences, and community interaction. Interested in joining the fun while helping a great cause? Both Hot and Soul Yoga and Synergy Hot Yoga Studios provide classes on the Red Bank farm a couple days a week for $30 per person plus a small registration fee that goes directly to OASIS tlc. Reservations are required, contact LaurieMOASIS@ gmail.com for more information or visit www.oasistlc.org.

Summer Reading
THIS IS ME,
by Chrissy Metz (“Kate” on This Is Us) Story LiliAnn Paras Imagine going from living in a trailer park, to finding yourself in Oprah’s home enjoying a private lunch! Chrissy Metz was on stage at the Grunin Theater in Toms River where she described, with great humor, her life before and after her role as Kate on This Is Us. CM was invited to the special book launch event for Chrissy’s new memoir, This is Me, Loving the Person You Are Today. On stage in a living room setting, she was open and friendly and this casual approach is evident in her writing too. Everyone in the audience received a copy of the book which will likely be a popular choice for many readers on beaches this summer. Chrissy writes as if she is speaking directly to the reader, confiding about her joys and struggles, all with an overarching warm sense of humor. She explores her life philosophy and theme of her memoir:“We can change, and we can have the lives we want and deserve,” a mantra prominently influenced by a battle with weight and image issues over the years. As she recounts her life stories, she shares advice on changing perspectives and reaching greater self- acceptance. At Grunin, Chrissy described how her home life in Florida was nothing like the warm, loving one she now experiences as Kate Pearson on television. She credits her inner confidence for her ability to deal with the humiliations regarding her weight, heaped on her by her stepfather and so many others. She emphasized moving on and embracing even the remotest opportunities to get her to her acting goal. For Chrissy, an early opportunity came when she took her sister to a local audition and Chrissy was instead asked to sing. Although she did not get the role, she formed key connections that ultimately led to her leaving for Los Angeles to become a talent agent for nine years. However, Chrissy viewed being an agent “like watching your boyfriend take someone else out.” She knew that, after almost a decade in agency work, it was time to relaunch her own singing or acting career. Though she did not pass an American Idol audition, she did get a role on American

We can change, and we can have the lives we want and deserve” Horror Story, where in a crazy twist of fate, she was required to wear a “fat suit”. Her eventual path to This Is Us was a twelve year journey. Chrissy’s answers to questions from the audience were also a major highlight of the event. These included revelations that the musical theme for her life would be the Golden Girls song, that she would love to return to American Horror Story if asked, that her latex dress choice at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards caused a great deal of controversy, and of course, that there would be surprises on This Is Us. She also said she enjoys that the cast and crew are very close and there is a lot of love and support among them all. When asked about next season, a discernible twinkle appeared in her eye as she hesitated and teased, “Well, you saw Kevin is with a gorgeous girl...and I know where they’re going…” Chrissy Metz promised many unexpected storylines in the next season of This Is Us and the enthusiastic response from the audience reflected the general excitement for the series. In the meantime, readers can pick up This is Me and enjoy reading about the behind the scenes of the television show and one of its leading actresses.

Requests for financial aid rise each session. The mission of the SPUR Board of Directors is to ensure that no student is turned away from the programs due to financial need. This year the target is to raise more than $40,000 for the SPUR Scholarship Fund.

Former Casey Becomes an NFL Colt Quenton Nelson is fast becoming the most famous football player to have come from Holmdel, NJ or graduate from Red Bank Catholic High School (Class of 2014). The offensive guard was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2018 NFL Draft and has since garnered praise as not only one of the safest picks throughout the three-day event, but perhaps the best pick of 2018. Nelson, #56, is currently in training for the upcoming season and is expected to start at left guard for the Colts. Congratulations Quenton on your graduation from the University of Notre Dame and your draft into the NFL!
SJV Dedicates Baseball Field to Athletic Director Saint John Vianney High School (SJVHS) blessed its varsity baseball field and named it after long-time SJVHS Athletic Director, Ken Szyarto, on April 30. Syartzo held the Athletic Director position at SJVHS for over 40 years, dedicating his life’s work to the school as the architect of its current athletic program. For more than four decades, Ken Szyarto devoted his time and effort to shaping young men and women into fair-minded competitors who valued sportsmanship on and off the field. Ken also encouraged SJVHS student athletes in their academic work and guided them in their professional choices; knowing that sports could only be one part of their lives.
Clement Parish in Matawan both conducted the ceremony. Immediately following the field dedication, the SJVHS boys’ varsity baseball team played Matawan High School. Ken’s brother John threw out the ceremonial first pitch to start the game. “One would be hard-pressed to speak with alumni of Saint John Vianney High School who didn’t know and respect Kenny Szyarto,” Lambertson stated. “Having his name above the baseball field, and a monument erected in his honor is a testament to all of the hard work and dedication that he had served this institution and its community.”
Current SJVHS Athletic Director Rich Lamberson says, “Looking at the athletic history of Saint John Vianney High School, you can see Kenny Szyarto’s influence everywhere. He worked at SJV for 40 years, he transformed the athletic program, added different teams with multiple levels. He influenced many a coach and student’s life.” Ken’s love of his family and friends was also a hallmark of his life. In every way, Ken strived to live by the SJVHS motto: “Knowledge, Commitment, Involvement.” The entire school, including all students, teachers, and staff surrounded the varsity baseball field for the blessing and dedication. SJVHS School Chaplain Father JM Patilla and Father Tom Vala of St.

Town-Wide Garage Sale Funds Holmdel Educational Experience On April 29, the Holmdel High School Parent-Teacher-Student Organization hosted its first ever Town-Wide Garage Sale. Thirty-five families participated by either hosting a sale at their residence or bringing their sale to the high school parking lot. Other supporters also donated to the PTSO directly for sale. All proceeds went to enhancing the educational experience at Holmdel High School. Though springtime rain and cooler temperatures made hosting the event a more challenging task, the PTSO hoped everyone enjoyed it nonetheless and left with a good bargain or a few extra dollars in their pockets. Special thanks to event sponsors - PODS, Playa Bowls, The Empanada Guy, and Harbor Mechanical.

Mater Dei Prep Receives the Most Nominations at the 13th Annual Basie Awards The biggest night for high school theater in Monmouth County is the Annual Basie Awards Ceremony, this year held on Wednesday, May 23, at the newly renamed Count Basie Center for the Arts (formerly Count Basie Theatre). The Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players were honored to be nominated for 16 awards, ultimately winning 7. The 16 Basie Award nominations tied a Mater Dei Prep record, and the Seraph Players production of Les Miserables received the most nominations of any musical this year. The production of Les Miserables had an unforgettable run that included three sell out performances and the largest number of tickets sold in Mater Dei Prep history. Les Miserables was the first production under the recently established Performing Arts Institute at Mater Dei Prep. The Basie Awards began in 2005 as a way to honor and recognize high school-level actors, actresses, and productions in the Monmouth County area. This year, a record 22 dramas and 29 musical performances were evaluated by the Basie Awards nomination committee, which produced nominations for students, productions, and schools in various acting and production categories. In addition to recognizing high school talent, a Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Middletown’s Tom Bernard, co-founder and co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, a longtime Count Basie Theatre board member, and co-founder of the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival. This honor is presented to individuals who have dedicated their lives to making art happen and art that matters in our community. Winners of the Count Basie Theatre’s Arts Impacts Scholarships were also recognized: Erica Wu of Holmdel High School; Shelby Pickelny of Ocean Township High; Isabella Mingino of Middletown High School South; and Abigail Karl of Communications High School.

Care to Give Women’s Auxiliary Hosts Annual Signature Event On May 18, Care to Give, Riverview Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary, held its annual signature event, Reason to Party, at Navesink Country Club in Middletown. Over 300 physicians and members of the local community came out to support and celebrate a phenomenal year for this longstanding organization. The evening was punctuated by an award ceremony honoring three of Riverview’s most highly respected and highly accomplished physicians - Dr. Phillipa Woodriffe, Dr. Steven Lisser and Dr. John Royall - for their invaluable and enduring contributions to the Hospital, its patients and the greater community. These physicians exemplify the mission of Care to Give, and the art of healing, through their devotion to increasing awareness, enhancing the quality of Riverview’s services and improving the health and wellness of our community. In the past year, Care to Give has distinguished itself in Monmouth County through the provision of rich health-related educational and outreach programs to over 6,000 children, 211 teachers and 9,000+ residents of our local communities. different school districts, and partnered with various community organizations such as Horizons, Bloom Again and 180 Turning Lives Around. Beyond Care to Give’s already well-established Teddy Bear Clinics, this year it expanded enrichment experiences to include nutrition-focused, interactive cooking demonstrations for children and adults; design thinking programs for middle school students; and hospital-based hands on experiences for high schoolers who are interested in careers in medicine. On the cusp of its 90th year, Riverview Women’s Auxiliary has supported the hospital and the community since the very beginning in 1929. As community leaders and dedicated professionals, the women of Care to Give all generously share their passion and commitment to serving patients, supporting our community and fulfilling the mission of Riverview Medical Center. In the words of Dr. Joseph Reichman, Riverview’s Vice President of Clinical Effectiveness and Medical Affairs, “Care to Give is the bedrock of the Riverview Community. It supports our team, it supports our physicians, it seeks and supports our community’s greatest needs.”

At the Holmdel Community Center, girls in attendance enjoyed a photo booth, games, candy guessing, and crafts; ending with a dance party and event slideshow. Indian Hill School Honors Eileen Calvert Guidance Counselor Eileen Calvert, who is retiring after 25 years of service to the students and families at Indian Hill School, was surprised this spring with a tree dedication. A group including students, teachers, and staff—as well as members of the Calvert family—gathered on April 24th to plant a tree in her honor. A beautiful snow fountain weeping cherry tree from Holmdel Nurseries was planted in recognition of Mrs. Calvert’s 25 years of dedicated service. Distinguished guests for the celebration included Superintendent Robert McGarry, Indian Hill Principal Lisa Marino, and Board of Education President Vicky Flynn. Over the past 25 years, Mrs. Calvert has initiated many projects to increase empathy and decrease mean-spiritedness at Indian Hill. She has mentored and encouraged students, of course, and she has also worked to inform the larger Holmdel community about reducing bullying and other unkind behaviors. She has been instrumental in bringing Indian Hill its first “Buddy Benches,” simple tools designed to foster inclusion and reduce loneliness on the playground. Her latest successful campaign, the “Gratitude Wall,” helps to build a positive, mindful attitude among students. It has been such a hit that two additional “Gratitude Walls” have
