S

ummer is here and the livin’ is easy! What’s amazing about where we live is that there are so many fun things to do - it really is hard to pick and choose. One event every summer I attend, which is the grandest day of racing on the Jersey shore, is The $1,000,000 William Hill Haskell Invitational, held on July 27th at Monmouth Park. But if you don’t fancy horseracing, Community Magazine (CM) has compiled a slew of local events for you and your family this summer on page 36.

CAROLYN BURTNICK Editor-In-Chief

Pictured left to right are some of Community Magazine’s staff members: Shirley StClair, Kaitlyn Anness, Lori Donnelly, Carolyn Burtnick, Erica Parker and Kimberly Earl.

In our March 2014 edition of CM, we announced it was our 3rd year in business. So on June 12, 2014 – CM invited friends of the magazine to join us in celebrating our anniversary at Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro. It was an amazing event with so many people who have given us tremendous support throughout the years. We want to first thank Anthony Beshara, owner of Bella Vista Country Club, and his staff for accommodating us and our guests with a delicious spread and cocktails. We also want to thank everyone who attended, whether you are our advertisers & partners, and/or supporters – you are all our friends. Here are the many faces that we can’t show our gratitude enough to! Enjoy your summer!

A Day in Tribute

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

On May 26, Holmdel Recreation and Holmdel Veterans sponsored the Memorial Day Ceremony held at the Memorial Circle in front of the Town Hall.

O

ver 60 people attended including veterans and their families, Holmdel Township Mayor Patrick Impreveduto, Committeemen Gregory Buontempo and Joseph Ponisi, as well as Freeholder Serena DiMaso.

Master of Ceremonies Art Davey, former Holmdel Mayor and member of VFW 5918 (retired) noted that this year Veterans Day celebrated its 70-year Anniversary. Mayor Impreveduto acknowledged and thanked those who have given their all and to those who continue to serve every day. Holmdel High School Band, conducted by John Koryat, played selections before, during and at the closing of the ceremony. Recognition of Armed Services was made, and any person who had served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard, was asked to participate in the changing of the flag for that particular branch. The final flag was the POW-MIA flag. Former Marine Steve “Pops” Cittadino, who assisted on changing all of the flags, was joined this time by David Jensen, who

Operation Provide Comfort Presents Jacquie Lee in… “Two Towns | One Voice | One Mission” A Concert to Benefit Union Beach

C

olts Neck native and The Voice finalist Jacquie Lee will star in “Two Towns-One Voice-One Mission,” a concert hosted by Operation Provide Comfort to benefit the residents of Union Beach on August 23, 2014 at the Robert J. Collins Arena, Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey.

Ticket prices are $50, $75, $100 and $250 for the VIP package; available now by calling 800.514.3849 or visiting www.opcunionbeach.org/tickets. All proceeds will directly benefit the residents of Union Beach who are still struggling to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. 16-year-old vocal powerhouse Jacquie Lee steadfastly honed her songwriting and performances on Jersey’s local scene before striking a chord with America on the top-rated NBC show The Voice. Under the mentorship of pop superstar Christina Aguilera, Jacquie made an impressive showing as first runner up, signaling this young artist’s amazing talent. Jacquie’s debut single “Broken Ones” has over three million streams on Spotify and shot to the Top 20 on iTunes Pop Chart. Jacquie recently signed to Atlantic Records in joint partnership with 300 Entertainment. Jacquie is touring the country as part of the 31-date Voice Live Tour, which began in June.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Jacquie is donating her time, talent and energy to help her fellow New Jerseyans,” said OPC Founder Lt. Col. Jim Sfayer, USMC Ret. “We’re hoping this event raises awareness that the rebuilding effort is far from over, as well as the much needed funds to make it a reality.” Prior to The Voice, Jacquie was an aspiring singer/songwriter and performed with Rockit, a performance program run out of the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ. Even then, charitable events were close to her heart. Jacquie did not hesitate when asked to join Operation Provide Comfort in raising money to help the residents of Union Beach as they continue rebuilding their homes and their lives. “Being in a position to help a community in my home state is a privilege for me,” said Ms. Lee. “Knowing I can share my talent to help others and raise awareness is one of the incredible benefits of participating in The Voice show and summer tour.” Union Beach, NJ is a small borough of mostly single-family homes (which are the owners’ primary residences). It is on the Raritan Bay, nestled between Keyport and Keansburg. Union Beach sustained devastating damage from Super Storm Sandy. Nearly 200 homes needed to be demolished, another 500 took on 5’ of water, and another 1,000 had up to 3’ of water damage. Police, Fire, Emergency Services, and the school all sustained significant damage to buildings and equipment. Sadly, the task of rebuilding is not close to accomplished. OPC currently welcomes event sponsors and donations for gift baskets to be auctioned prior to the event. Interested parties may contact Diana Piotrowski, OPC administrator at 732.946.3474 or globalinfo1@verizon.net. For more information on Operation Provide Comfort, please visit www.opcunionbeach.org or https://www.facebook.com/OperationProvideComfortUnionBeach.

Colts Neck Friends of the Library Host 11th Annual Spelling Bee A ribbon was given to every speller and the final four each received a trophy. The top three spellers received a cash prize of $100, $75 and $50 respectively. James Pasquale emerged the winner; second place went to Brianna Johnson, third place to Ryan Whalen, and Presslie Mariner took home Honorable Mention.

The group of participants gather for a photo with teachers Mrs. Manners, Mrs. Desmond and Ms. Plumfield.

S

eventeen enthusiastic, supportive and confident fourth grade students and their families arrived at the Colts Neck Library on June 6, 2014 to take part in the 11th annual Spelling Bee hosted by the Friends of the Library (FOL). The students were excited to see Mrs. Manners, Mrs. Desmond and Ms. Plumfield, their teachers, in the audience.

14

The winners were, left to right: Brianna Johnson, Ryan Whalen, James Pasquale, Presslie Mariner

In keeping with tradition, every speller was ensured a successful first round - it consisted of spelling his or her first name. This allowed the students to practice using the microphone and to alleviate some of the anxiety. (A misspelled name would not disqualify the contestant!). The group spelled almost 200 words before the contest was over.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

The contest is open to all fourth graders residing in Colts Neck. The FOL Board was on hand to run the event. Co-president LiliAnn Paras chaired the event and urged the community to learn more about the FOL; treasurer Jeanne Heck read the words to the spellers, member Gauri Shah was the judge and co-president Michele Battista took the photographs. The group looks forward to meeting next year’s group of spellers. The Colts Neck Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization formed to support the CN Library and runs several programs for the community, including the Art and Photography Show, Book Sale, Spelling Bee, Garden, Book Club and more. It is always seeking new members and is a great way to serve in a friendly atmosphere. Please leave your contact information at the front desk of the Colts Neck Library.

SAINT LEO THE GREAT CARNIVAL OPENING NIGHT FUN STORY SUSAN MURPHY

S

aint Leo the Great Parish Community has held their annual Carnival for more years than anyone can remember. This year, opening night was June 16 and the Carnival ran through June 21. Yet, everyone agrees that this much-anticipated event has always been a favorite for local residents and their extended families. General Chairman Joseph Manzi said, “We were looking

for everyone to have a good time. We pride ourselves that we are a family-oriented carnival, and that there will be something for children of all ages from two to teens. There were also many added attractions that will complete your carnival experience.”

New this year was face painting and glitter tattoos. Manzi noted that the Carnival introduced an old time

photo booth, complete with costumes for dressing up. “The string of pictures captured this memorable event that you can look back on over the years.” Also new this year was a special novelty store that had glow sticks for the younger children. At least 13 rides and 16 game attractions, as well as fresh food cooked by Saint Leo the Great families completed the Carnival.

Super 50 raffles throughout each evening was a hit. “With 50% of the proceeds going to the winner and 50%

going to the Parish, we hope to raise over $100,000,” said Manzi. Prior to the Carnival sponsor programing was

From Saturday Night Live to Sailing the Seas

Holmdel Native Creates Business Into His Endless Summer STORY RUSSELL CARSTENS

Tracey Dell, a Holmdel resident, was a touring audio engineer during the eighties, when he worked the soundboards at clubs like Asbury Park’s Stone Pony.

I

n 1987, he received a call from NBC and took their offer to work on the set of Saturday Night Live. He mixed sound on the floor as an audio assistant while “putting mics on the talent,” and performing other sound-related tasks. He remained with SNL until 2003 and left NBC in 2005. Dell’s interest in sailing began in the early eighties when his friend Carl “Tinker” West took him for a casual sail. Tinker taught him the ropes and it became a hobby. After deciding to leave the lucrative but hectic pace of the television world behind, Dell decided to give the sailing business a try. His wife Kathleen books all reservations, and the company and Kathleen D catamaran are named after her. Located conveniently in Baker’s Marina on the Bay in Highlands, Kathleen D offers several types of sails. A private charter can be booked for up to twenty people. Although it is mostly couples they get their business from, they’re occasionally approached by an individual who wants to experience sailing. Private events are also held, consisting mostly of groups of friends or wine tasting groups, boat clubs or church congregations. More recently, memorial ash scattering services have become a regular part of their business. Dell occasionally takes friends from his television days out, who may bring along colleagues from the entertainment business. SNL actor Kenan Thompson and his wife have joined Dell for a sail. Sails set out at six thirty in the evening and return around nine o’clock. This leaves guests with time to get dinner and enjoy the night ahead. Although he doesn’t have a favorite type of sail, Dell particularly enjoys those that focus on sunsets, noting the “spectacular” displays seen from Sandy Hook Bay. During that time there are very few other boats on the water, making the experience more private. Dell likens sailing to “floating on air.” Dell says, “In our business you see the best side of humanity,” while guests on the boat are relaxing and enjoying themselves. Sailing is about relaxing and taking in the

overall experience. If customers wish, the boat is anchored and they can go for a swim in July and August when the water temperature is optimal. The company is open to offering new services in the future, and it has teamed up with the Monmouth County Park System for stargazing sails this summer. A representative from the parks department will be on board to lead the event and point out constellations and other treats in the sky. A deep thinker, Dell is looking forward to smoothly riding out the rest his life in contemplation on the water. He says, “Being in television and rock and roll are fun, but this is just like taking the fun business and turning it into the endless summer.”

Holmdel’s Girl Scout Troop 1248 visit Ronald McDonald House

E

very year the members of Girl Scout Troop 1248 make arrangements to visit the Ronald McDonald house in Long Branch. This wasn’t just an ordinary visit; they actually went to prepare a delicious cooked meal, from soup to nuts, for a few families residing in the residence. Ronald McDonald’s house goal is to provide a true “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children receiving care at nearby medical facilities. They welcome and support families

during a time of uncertainty and stress. Family members can stay together in a comfortable home with private rooms and many amenities, helping them to remain strong throughout the course of their child’s treatment. They also offer Family rooms and hospitality suites in the pediatric units of four hospitals in Monmouth and Middlesex County. The Girl Scout Cadette’s of Troop 1248 enjoyed their visit and are looking forward in returning soon.

But Schwartz said the venue isn’t just for kids and families, the Game Time Bar & Grill holds sports viewings on largerthan-life televisions and a menu for everyone. 20

“It’s a perfect date night,” Schwartz said. “There really is something for every age range.” Schwartz said since she joined the iPlay team, they have been thinking of different ways to market the 115,000 square foot event center. Since opening in 2012, iPlay has ditched their initial admission fees and lowered prices while offering more events, rides and games. All summer long, guests who visit after 3:00 p.m. and on the weekends can enjoy unlimited ride passes for just $19.95. Add go-kart passes and pay just $24.99. Every purchase brings guests 50 percent off their next visit.

O

n June 1, 2014 the elegant reception hall at The PNC Bank Arts Center was filled with buoyant good cheer as community leaders, family and friends arrived for Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel’s Inaugural Benefit Gala celebration, led by Rabbi Shmaya and Rochi Galperin. The exciting and meaningful evening began with an elaborate reception, setting the stage to recognize the community milestone of Chabad’s fifth anniversary in Holmdel, pay tribute to the supporters who have contributed to this success, and share a ‘L’chaim’ for the future. As country music fans got ready for a Luke Bryan concert in the performance space at PNC, guests of the gala were

ushered into the ballroom, including Colts Neck Mayor Russel Macnow, Holmdel Mayor Pat Impreduto, Assemblywoman Amy Handlin, community leaders, rabbis of various congregations, and more than 150 friends of Chabad.

Rabbi Boruch Chazanow, Director of Chabad of Western Monmouth County, offered prayers and words of inspiration in honor of Chabad’s five-year anniversary in Holmdel. A beautiful video showed the programs and events offered by Chabad over the past five years. The video also included interviews with members of the community, who were asked to describe “What is Chabad.” “Leadership, love, acceptance, family, a life-line for Judaism, all- inclusive,” were just a few of the answers.

“Chabad is a place that welcomes all Jewish individuals and families regardless of background, affiliation, observance, age or financial status,” said Rabbi Shmaya Galperin. The highlight of the evening was the awards presentation to the honorees. Harry and Mat Weisfeld received the Woman of Valor Award in loving memory of Sheila Weisfeld. A touching memorial tribute video was shown depicting Sheila’s love, admiration and active involvement with Chabad and the family’s endowment to The Chabad Hebrew School, which will

olts Neck Middle School held their annual Art Show on June 5, displaying the talented works of its student artists in grades sixth through eighth. Art teacher Ryan Walker said, “This was the first year that every student was represented.” He said it was nice because it was the first time this had happened in five years. Walker said there were around 400 pieces of art displayed in the show. Many of the students are in the Art Club after school which offers extra guidance in the various forms of art regularly studied during the year. “I try to expose them to as much as possible. Some say they really like doing sculpture, others like painting.” He tries to offer a variety so the students can find what works best for them. school for about a week. The only evening it was open to family and friends was June 5. Some of the types of artwork shown were collage self-portraits; paper mache’ masks; tooling wire sculptures; acrylics; watercolor; colored pencils; and chalk. Through a PTO grant, Walker was able to get the canvas on which the eighth grade completed their artwork. “The Art Show is a nice place for the students to shine, especially those students who are not interested in sports,” said Walker. He feels this gives them a chance to cultivate their talents and by combining this show with their after school Art Club activities, they can explore ways to express themselves. There are many talented students in Cedar Drive Middle School who are just beginning to find their niche thanks to a great Art teacher, generous PTO, and the unending support from parents and friends.

LINCROFT PTA

Sponsors Theater Week

Lincroft Elementary School put on an amazing show, “The Rotten Princess” at Thompson Middle School on June 6, 2014. It was a fantastic and funny production, where every actor did a wonderful job. Theater Week is an event sponsored by Lincroft PTA, in which 4th and 5th grade students can participate. The production company is Taubenslag Productions, which is the original creator of Theater Week for schools. When they designed this program, their main objective was to build children’s self-esteem and confidence using performance and theater arts as the conduit. They instill the motto, “When you try your best – you can do anything” into all of their Theater Week and Cultural Arts programs. Each student can try out for any of the lead parts if they wish and all students will have a part and be onstage throughout the show. It is an amazing week as the students receive only the words to the songs and all speaking parts without a script by the director. The students practice for two hours, three days a week and by Friday afternoon the students are able to put on a show for the school, followed by an evening performance for the parents. Kudos to the Travelers & Opera Singers, Granny & the Rugby Team, the Prime Ministers & the Suitors – who were all awesome, and the King, Queen, Wise Man, Peter the Beggar and Katrina were outstanding! A special thanks to Ellen Addario, Chair of Theater Week, who did an amazing job pulling it all together in one week.

Summer Safety Tips:

Keeping Your Kids Happy & Hydrated PROVIDED NOAH CARPENTER

The summer is a special time of year for all of us living along the Jersey Shore. For children, the summer represents so much more: freedom. Not only are children free from homework, classrooms and bus rides; they are free to play outside as long as they want. While they enjoy this time, it’s important to make sure your children stay hydrated in order to avoid illness due to dehydration. Marc Milano, M.D., Medical Director of Bayshore Community Hospital’s Emergency Department shares his expertise on keeping kids safe while having fun in the sun. “Water accounts for 60 percent of body weight,” Dr. Milano said. “It also plays a critical role in just about every bodily process.” Nearly everything you do during the day—typing, talking, walking, and even eating—requires energy. That energy, in turn, generates heat, which escapes the body through perspiration. Simply put, perspiration is how your body stays cool. Under normal conditions, we all lose water through perspiration, and other bodily functions. In a healthy person, this water is replaced by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. “When your children are playing outside for long periods

of time and not drinking enough water, dehydration occurs.” Dr. Milano said. Symptoms to look out for with dehydration include thirst, irritability, fatigue, dry mouth, and dizziness. “In cases of mild dehydration, I recommend my patients simply rehydrate by drinking fluids,” said Dr. Milano. If you have trouble getting your kids to drink water “Try mixing your child’s water 50/50 with their favorite juice - like apple, orange or grape.” Dehydration should be treated as soon as possible, to avoid further injury or complications. If your child is exhibiting any symptoms of dehydration and symptoms do not improve after drinking fluids, it may be time to consult a medical expert. The Pediatric Care Center at Bayshore, part of Meridian Pediatric Network, is here to help, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Pediatric Care Center provides enhanced pediatric services in an environment designed for kids. Additionally, the Center is staffed by in-house pediatricians, board certified emergency medicine physicians, and magnet-recognized pediatric nurses so parents can have peace of mind knowing their children are in the most capable hands.

Red Bank Veterinary Hospital At Home House Call Service

Have you ever had to catch a scared kitty cat from under the bed and place it in a carrier for a trip to the veterinarian? Has your dog ever drooled or vomited in the back of your car from a case of nerves? Has your beloved pet ever needed a checkup when you are unable to leave home or lack transportation? A veterinary house call may be the perfect solution. A home visit by a veterinarian can reduce stress to your pet by eliminating the foreign, unpleasant experience of the carrier, car ride and confronting new animals. They also offer low-stress veterinary care for nervous cats and dogs and pets with mobility problems, as well as decrease your pet’s exposure to illness and contagious illnesses. Since the doctor comes to you, nervous pets that may not get to the vet regularly, can receive more routine care and underlying disease can be “nipped in the bud”. If further diagnostics or surgery is needed, pets can be transferred to an established veterinary hospital. House calls are also stress-free for you, the pet owner! They allow for a more personalized experience. You receive more time with the veterinarian and multiple pets can be seen in a single visit. If there ever comes a time when your ability to leave the house is compromised, rest easy knowing your pets will continue to receive the preventive care they need. One of the greatest rewards of in-home care is the ability to offer hospice and end of life services. Many geriatric pets suffer from severe arthritis and other mobility problems that impact their quality of life. Animals have the ability to hide pain, which is a mechanism of survival, but this enables them to suffer in silence. The house call veterinarian can assess for pain at home and empower you to recognize and manage symptoms of pain. Without pain, you and your pet can enjoy more family time together. When the time comes to say goodbye to your beloved pet, a house call euthanasia appointment lets you and your pet be together for the last time in a familiar environment. This is one of the greatest gifts you can give your furry family member, and pet owners often find grieving in the privacy of their own home to be very comforting as well. If you think that you or your pet might benefit from an athome veterinary visit, consider a veterinary house call as a convenient, low-stress, and comfortable solution for routine care.

Colts Neck Senior Citizens Club Cruises Through Spring Twenty-five people from the Senior Citizens Club of Colts Neck went on a fun-filled cruise thanks to the diligent planning of President John Walsh. The trip was not funded by the Club in any way, but privately financed. The happy travelers went by bus to Bayonne, NJ where they embarked on the Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Sea. They spent 10 days and 9 nights visiting beautiful islands such as Bermuda, St. Martin, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Labadee in Haiti.

If you are over 55 and reside in Colts Neck, you are eligible to join this active and fun Club. For more information, call John Walsh at 732.946.0591.

Colts Neck Orthodontics and Invisalign Colts Neck Center for Orthodontics and Invisalign specializes in orthodontics for children and adults. Many adults and children are apprehensive when getting braces, so Dr. John Young, Jr. offers many solutions that will fit his patients’ needs. These may include traditional metal braces, clear braces, or Invisalign “invisible” aligners. He has created a child-friendly environment in both the Colts Neck and Brick offices, as well as fun incentive programs that help to keep children involved in their treatment programs. Dr. Young stays active in the local communities he serves and often visits local schools to talk with students about orthodontic care. Dr. Young is now treating many patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. He has previously suffered from sleep apnea (diagnosed ten years ago) and was unable to comply with CPAP therapy. The mask and nasal pillows were just too annoying, and the pressure of the air was unbearable. He heard the same from many other patients and now has found a solution to replace your CPAP and stop you from snoring. And best of all medical insurance will pay for it Some concerns of his adult patients include wondering if snoring is normal. “No. Snoring is more than just annoying to you and your sleep partner. It can be a symptom of a potentially dangerous condition, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA),” said Dr. Young. Another concern is what the symptoms of sleep apnea are; “Loud snoring, tiring easily during the day, trouble staying awake while driving, and waking multiple times during the night. The most dangerous symptom is when you stop breathing while asleep, so much so, that you have to wake up gasping for air,” he explained. Dr. Young elaborated on how an oral appliance can help a patient with sleep apnea. “With sleep apnea patients, their tongue and associated structures collapse in the oropharynx (back of the throat) to prevent airflow into the lungs either totally or partially.” He noted that most oral appliances work by positioning the lower jaw forward which opens the airway in the oropharynx. “The

34

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

appliance I personally use also opens the nasal passages to help the patient breath and eliminate snoring.” Asked if this oral appliance was as effective as CPAP therapy, Dr. Young replied, “CPAP therapy is the gold standard for the treatment of sleep apnea. However, many patients find the mask/apparatus uncomfortable and difficult to wear. If the CPAP is not worn, it is useless. Most patients find the oral appliance comfortable and easier to sleep with every night. In that case, the oral appliance can be just as effective as CPAP therapy.” The education of Dr. John Young, Jr., D.D.S. includes having ranked number one in his dental school class at Georgetown University School of Dentistry. He did his residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Young has had advanced training in the treatment of Pediatric Orthodontics, Cleft Palate and Craniofacial deformities, Sleep Apnea and TMJ patients, and Facial Cosmetics. He is on staff at Meridian and St. Barnabas Hospitals in the area. Dr. Young and his wife, Rosemarie, of 23 years, have a daughter Cassidy, 18, and identical triplets Jamie, Rebecca, and Courtney, 17. He moved from Holmdel to Colts Neck just after the birth of his triplets. There were two specific reasons that led Dr. Young to becoming an Orthodontist. “I was always interested in the human body and in the cosmetic aspect of medicine/ dentistry. Orthodontics allows me to work using these interests. Practicing orthodontics allows me, on a daily basis, to change people’s lives in a positive way by giving them a beautiful smile to last a lifetime. In the case of sleep dentistry, I can improve, and maybe save people’s lives by helping them breathe while sleeping, for a good night’s rest. And with no snoring!” Colts Neck Orthodontics and Invisalign is located at 273 Route 34, Suite 705, Colts Neck, New Jersey 07722. The office number is 732.761.9700.

If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

Daniela’s Wish presented its first annual “Art with Heart” fundraiser on May 22 at Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro. The Board was very pleased with the attendance at the event.

Close to 75 local residents and business owners enjoyed a light buffet, silent and gift auction during the threehour event. Gift items were donated by local businesses. The Board of Directors of Daniela’s Wish, many volunteers and Jeff Freidman of the Freehold Borough Arts Council planned the event. Daniela Olt is a young girl on a mission to continue helping children by granting wishes during their time of sadness, which in turn helps them feel like kids again. Daniela is just a kid who recently turned 12 on her birthday. She attends Cedar Drive Middle School in Colts Neck and has had firsthand experience on what kids need and wish for during difficult times. She began Daniela’s Wish at the age of seven, when she wanted to help the kids in Haiti and then those in New Jersey recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Sheila Olt, Daniela’s mother said this of her daughter. “Daniela has always had an old soul and a gift to always think of others and give back. This fundraiser was like all the others; she works

hard, gives her time during nights and weekends, and it makes her feel good to know that other children that were sad can be happy with a wish she can grant. This fundraiser was special to her because she was able to give back to two other local organizations.” Daniela has always had a passion to help others, said her mother. “She does not like to hear about anyone who is sad or sick. Her passion to help continues to grow.” Daniela’s older sister Briyonna has always been there for Daniela and for the organization every step of the way, said Mrs. Olt. “Briyonna is also involved herself in several local organizations. She is passionate about this and works with special needs children teaching them how to paint and bake.” The impact Daniela’s Wish has had on the children it has helped is amazing, said Mrs. Olt. “I feel elated about Daniela’s Wish. Going through our own tough times and understanding what children can go through during illness or any

times of sadness, it is good knowing an organization like Daniela’s Wish can truly help the child going through these tough times. Knowing a child can be uplifted with a gift, or that a child who has or is suffering with illness or tragedy can be helped through Daniela’s Wish and that we can give them and their family some hope or relief. The feeling of seeing a child that hasn’t smiled or laughed in weeks but does after something is given to them from Daniela’s Wish is a wonderful and warm feeling.” Daniela explained how she felt knowing the Art with Heart fundraiser would be helping so many more children. “I am very happy. I like to help kids that are sad or suffering and my heart feels warm when I can make other kids and their parents smile.” When asked if there was one child she has helped that stood out in her mind, she replied, “All the kids I help and have helped are

special. I love getting their letters and pictures of their smiles with the gift I am able to give them.” Daniela did share her thoughts on one young boy who attended this fundraiser and whom she had helped. “One special friend who I was very close with and granting a couple wishes for him and his family was my friend Daniel. He was three and he had the best smile and laugh. Unfortunately, we lost Daniel, and it was the toughest day of my life. But I promised him and his mom I would continue to help other kids like Daniel, who was a heart patient.” Granting wishes for little kids makes Daniela Olt happy. “I love Daniela’s Wish and all the work we have done. I have a great board, great volunteers and support from others. It is the best feeling to know I have helped children be happy when they have been sad. I hope to grow Daniela’s Wish and con-

tinue to help kids everywhere feel better by granting them a wish.” Daniela is a young girl who is wise beyond her twelve years; a caring and loving person who saw a need and found a way to fill that need. She has shown by example that a gentle touch, a kind smile, a special wish granted can and does bring happiness to everyone involved. Visit www.danielaswish.com for further information about Daniela, what she has accomplished so far, and what she hopes to do in the future. Proceeds from “Art with Heart” will benefit Daniela’s Wish, Ronald McDonald House in Long Branch, New Jersey, and Freehold Borough Arts Council. Now in the planning stages is a Softball Tournament to be held on August 13, 2014. Like Daniela’s Wish on her Facebook page for more details.

Oak Hill Academy Scores High in World Math and National Science Tests LEFT - OHA 7th Grader, Dylan Servilla, (pictured with his science teacher Noreen Billet) was one of only five students in the country to receive a perfect score on the Physical Science National Science League Test. RIGHT - Oak Hill students Michael Zhang, Harry Jain, and Thomas Wang all had perfect scores on the international mathematics test created by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study.

In the field of education, there is much debate regarding the aptitude of United States mathematics students versus children in other parts of the world. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) provides reliable and timely data on the mathematics and science achievement of US students compared to that of students in other countries. The math test is given internationally every four years with data now available for the 2011 testing. In this most recent administration, more than 60 countries including the United States participated. In May of this year, Joseph Pacelli, Headmaster at Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft, thought it would be of interest to see how the school’s eighth grade level math students would fair against the approximate 500,000 students who took the 2011 test across the world. The exam was taken and the results were very impressive. “We scored just below Singapore with an 81.3 average to our 78.4. We were just ahead of Chinese Taipei (76.5) and Japan (75.5). The United States’ average was 69,” states Pacelli. Oak Hill had 53 students participate with 29 scoring 80% or better. Three students, Harry Jain, Thomas Wang and Michael Zhang all achieved a perfect score.

“The TIMSS testing is an excellent measure of how students compare to other children internationally. The test is demanding and asks students to solve problems which are thought provoking using various methods of mathematical reasoning,” concludes Pacelli. On the science front, Oak Hill Academy seventh grade student, Dylan Servilla, was one of only five students nationally to correctly answer all 50 questions on the Physcial Science Test from the National Science League this May. This test is designed by science and math teachers with teaching experience from elementary to the college level. It is based on factual knowledge as well as the students understating of the scientific process. In addition to Dylan’s fabulous score the seventh grade team from Oak Hill Academy finished 2nd in NJ and 9th nationally with a total combined score of 461! The total score is calculated by combining the top ten scorers from that particular grade and equates to the team’s point value for the competition. The seventh grade team was Dylan Servilla, William Walsh, Mary Mahoney, Lucas Bruckmann, Anna Effenberger, Julianna Troccoli, Zach Basile, Jessica Abbott, Alex Klatsky, Hannah Gazdus and Jonathan Guiffre. The 8th grade team’s high scorers were Harry Jain and Megan Scafaria. Congratulations to OHA science teachers, Mrs. Billet and Mrs. Schroeter, and their students.

SJVHS Military Support Club Attends D-Day 70th Anniversary Commemoration On June 6, 2014, the SJVHS Military Support Club, along with Social Studies teacher and club moderator, Mrs. Diane Robb attended the 70th anniversary commemoration of D-Day at Brookdale Community College. The event was sponsored by the Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution, and was hosted by Assemblywoman Amy Handlin. Students were able to view soldier’s equipment from World War II and learn about the D-Day mission. “The looks on the faces of my son and my students as they came face to face with real heroes

from the Greatest Generation were priceless. In return, the looks on the faces of these amazing men will be remembered forever,” states Mrs. Diane Robb. The ceremony also included the awarding of the Distinguished Service Medal to Arthur Seltzer, Peter Logerfo, Bernard Friedenberg, Joseph Pisano, and Edward Gorman, all of whom reside in New Jersey and were part of the invasion force that stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy on June 6, 1944. The Military Support Club is always collecting items and trying to find new ways to support our troops and veterans. In the past they have collected Halloween candy to be sent to the troops and have sent holiday cards to local veterans. This year they collected several boxes of items for the Association of the United States Army Monmouth Chapter (AUSA). The AUSA assembles and ships care packages to our soldiers overseas.

atching NFL Hall-of-Famer Dan Marino line up his golf swing, the look on his face isn’t any less intense than when millions watched him line up his passes perfectly over and over again.

But a smile appears when you ask the NFL great, who spent his entire 17-year career as a quarterback with the Miami Dolphins, about the Dan Marino Foundation for autism. The now 22-year-old foundation has brought joy to Marino’s life, and the lives of those he has been able to help. “When you see a family who says what we’re doing has really helped them, I know we’re doing something right,” Marino said, in between swings at June’s charity outing held at Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro. The Dan Marino Foundation was founded in 1992, after Marino’s son was diagnosed with autism when he was 2-years-old. Now at 25-years-old, Marino’s son is a DJ in Florida and helping as much as possible with the foundation. As golfers lined up for a chance to play with Marino at the tenth hole, Marino said he’s most excited right now about a new program with the Dan Marino Foundation that fosters secondary education and job development for people 18-24 in all areas of the autism spectrum. “We wanted to do something to help kids have the same changes our son had in life,” Marino said. The golf outing was sponsored by Corporate Resource Services, a publicly

traded company that focuses on staffing needs of everything from Fortune 500 companies to small storefronts. Marino partnered with Corporate Resource Services two years ago, using his knowledge of business and sales to boost CRS credibility and revenue. The company’s CEO John Messina said it has definitely worked. “Things are going great with Dan,” Messina said. “He’s opening doors left and right. Now he’s working more with our sales force than he was in the past.” Marino said the relationship has worked well for everyone. “They have been big supporters, and I feel like I’ve helped them as well.” Corporate Resource Services now has 240 offices in more than 35 states, and over 1,000 direct employees. Messina said they continue to see revenue growth.

The Dan Marino Foundation sponsors yearlong and season programs for children and adults with autism, and helps fund long term autism research.

DIVORCE TALK

PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.

FAQs

Q: What are the grounds for divorce in New Jersey? A: There are several traditional fault grounds, but the most common ground is irreconcilable differences, which is considered a no-fault ground.

Q: Does fault matter? A: Except in the most egregious cases, like the attempted murder of a spouse, the Supreme Court has ruled that fault is irrelevant to economic issues. Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. For more information please see the firm’s website at www. par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.

Q: How long will it take to get a divorce? A: Although it varies, depending on the facts and complexity of each case, most divorces take ten to fourteen months from start to finish.

settle the case? A: Yes, several. Direct negotiations between the parties and their attorneys most often lead to settlements. However, several other opportunities exist – Matrimonial Early Settlement Panels (MESP), Economic Mediation (Court Ordered) and Mediation (by agreement of people who need more help to settle, because of the emotional, factual and/or legal complexity of the case).

Q: Must spouses live under the

same roof while going through a divorce? A: Yes or no. No law requires it. Often economics dictate, leaving both spouses to share one household.

Q: Can one spouse be forced to leave? A: Again, the answer is yes or no. Unless one spouse commits an act of domestic violence,

the person cannot be forced to leave.

Q: What is an act of domestic violence? A: There are several acts defined by the statute, among them are assault, harassment, stalking, and terroristic threats.

Q: Is it wise to file a domestic violence complaint against a spouse? A: It is if domestic violence has actually occurred and protection is needed. It is not if it is an attempt to gain leverage in the divorce or a reaction to a garden variety argument.

Q: How much does a divorce cost? A: It varies, depending on the facts and intricacy of the case and the experience and expertise of the lawyer. Cost is something that should be discussed during an initial consultation.

Q: How does divorce end? A: It ends with the entry of a Final Judgment of Divorce which is the document that actually dissolves the marriage. The Final Judgment will either incorporate the parties’ agreement if the case settled or it will incorporate the judge’s rulings if the case was tried.

throughout the summer, building towards Quarter and Semi-Final rounds in the fall, and the grand finale concert in the fall, where a winner will be crowned “Jersey Shore KARAOKE Idol 2014”. There are three ways contestants can enter to sing their way into the hearts of audiences and judges throughout the competition, and be part of history: · Open call auditions at theater locations, which will process applicants through elimination rounds throughout the summer. · Local New Jersey and select “out of town” clubs, bars and restaurant establishments will run 4 week summer competitions with each sending their finalist directly to the quarter finals. · An online competition will have fans vote to select winners to be entered into the Quarter-Final rounds. Quarter and Semi-Finals in October will introduce competitors to a new series of performance challenges such as themes, choreography and costuming. Quarter and Semi Final rounds will be held at theater venues as ticketed events, where a panel of judges will eliminate the group down to 12 hopefuls. Grand Finale: (November 2014) the final 12 will face even more challenges; audience participation, and special industry guests. If you have a restaurant or bar that has Karaoke and would like to have them participate, please feel free to pass this information along. illage School held their annual Carnival on May 30, hosted by the school’s parent group PSA. Originally scheduled for May 16, the carnival was rained out and the May 30 date chosen for the muchanticipated event. Carnival Co-chairs Debbie Brew and Lori Umbrino said over 500 were in attendance. Children tried their luck at the many different games and everyone walked away with a “good try” prize or a “WINNER” prize. The photo booth, hair beading and Sandy Candy were

big hits. Outside, DJ Skillz entertained with his dance moves that matched the awesome music he spun throughout the event. Principal Brian Schillaci is “the best principal ever” said Brew, as he took pies in the face from his giggling students and laughed along with them. She noted that Party Perfect Rentals offered a variety of rides for the children. “Dearborn Market brought their expert griller, delicious hamburgers, hot dogs and wraps all headed up by Vin Daniele and his son Chris, both of whom worked tirelessly to bring some delicious meals to the masses,” said Brew.

Four Grand Prizes and 36 class baskets were raffled off at the Carnival. Each basket was donated by the families contributing to their class basket which was purchased and assembled by a volunteer or class parent in the school. “Our Basket and Volunteer Coordinator, Vicki DiBlasi did a fantastic job as usual making sure there was a good variety of baskets. She also coordinated the 64 student and adult volunteers made up of Indian Hill, Satz and High School students as well as some hard working Boy Scouts and parents,” said Brew. The teachers are a great part of the support system

in the school, she noted, and added that 14 teachers volunteered to help with the Carnival, as did Principal Schillaci and Vice Principal Vierschilling. “Vicki created a full schedule for us to follow and Vanessa Merhi helped with the crazy rescheduling after we had to utilize our rain date for this event. It was definitely a big undertaking,” said Brew. Umbrino and Brew said they never worry about a thing when DiBlasi is involved. “She’s a unique and amazing

volunteer who stays behind the scenes but deserves as much accolades as all for the success of this day!” These two women have co-chaired the Carnival for two years but are now moving on to Indian Hill School. “We have had the time of our lives fundraising here at Village School. The Carnival is our biggest fundraiser and the appreciation and support we receive before, during and after means the world to us and keeps us going!” They wanted to thank everyone who helped make this

Carnival a huge success, especially Vicki DiBlasi, Vin Daniele, Vanessa Merhi, Dennis Pavlik, Paula Blalock, Darlene Kiss and the PSA Executive Board, as well as the excellent custodial staff and eager volunteers. “Thank you all!” said Umbino and Brew. Principal Schillaci said of the Carnival, “This was another great event by the PSA for our amazing school, where all that is raised goes right back to our school.”

Women’s Retreat

I

n May, 39 women from Colts Neck, neighboring towns, and areas as far as Livingston, met at the exquisite Eden Resort & Suites in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for Colts Neck Community Church’s 2nd Annual Women’s Retreat. Speaking to three generations of women was Deb Hinkel, a professor at Lancaster Bible College, who delivered empowering messages of purpose and hope, whilst journeying through the Book of Ruth. In Deb’s words, “The CNCC retreat focused on challenging women to reflect on their unique make-up and identity. This quality group of women engaged each session with interest and a desire to learn. The weekend was a great example of women supporting and encouraging one another. It was a great expression of care and community.” Women participated in a service project in support of the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, a non-profit organization

located in the Philadelphia area. In addition to providing shelter to the homeless for over 130 years, this ministry operates a transitional home for women as well as a longterm recovery program for men. Many needed items were donated by the women along with cards, handwritten with heartfelt words of encouragement and faith for hurting men committed to positive life-change. As the Mission does not receive government funding, they rely heavily on the contributions of individuals, families, churches, and businesses. Please consider visiting www.sundaybreakfast. org for more information on getting involved and/or giving. For more information about CNCC, visit their website at www.OurCNCC.org or call the Church Office at 732.462.2779. CNCC is located at 25 Merchants Way in Colts Neck.

Holmdel Department of Special Services Hosts a Sports Expo The Holmdel School District joined with Special Olympics of New Jersey to host a Sports Clinic Expo on June 3, 2013 at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel. Colts Neck, Keansburg, Middletown, Upper Freehold and Union Beach School Districts were invited as well, with over 350 Special Needs and General Education students who were involved in the event. All students enjoyed Yoga, Golf and multiple soccer skill stations. Attending as trainers were coaches and soccer players from Rutgers University, Brookdale Community College and Georgian Court University. The Holmdel soccer and golf teams also assisted with skills, as did Holmdel’s Team Unify and Unified Buddies. Holmdel Related Services professionals were on site to assist in modifying the skills. . The driving force behind the Sports Expo was a

collaborating effort between the Holmdel School District Department of Special Services, Special Olympics and a committee of stakeholders led by Fern Litwak-Lucash, a Holmdel Educational Consultant. The committee included Meryl Gill, Randy Westrol, Amy Clark, Andrea Mozo, Beth Semanchick, Geri Semenza, Susan Stanzione and Jean Thompson. They used Project Unify, a Special Olympics program designed to promote and develop understanding, acceptance and respect between young people. It motivates youth to become advocates for and together with all people, thus building a school community where all young people are agents of change. The Special Olympics Movement unlocks the joy of sports to inspire people to open their minds to accept, include and value people with intellectual and physical disabilities in all aspects of life.

The eighth grade students presented two Mock Trial animal rogue cases. The first case was about a person who believed the pet they purchased had a pre-existing disease that the seller did not disclose and the second case was about a dog attack on a human. The student audience was the jurors and they were given a sheet to fill in order to determine the verdict in favor of the plaintiff or the defendant. The members of the Mock Trial presented their cases in front of the audience with professionalism and confidence. All students who participated in Mock Trial had a speaking part. Mrs. Maureen Warshaw, Esq. stated, “This is a great opportunity for the children to acquire and reinforce writing skills, public speaking as well as critical and analytical thinking.”

The seventh graders, class 7B, of St. Benedict School in Holmdel, recently helped out an elementary school in need in Hopewell, Virginia for their service project. So what’s the connection between the two schools and classes? Two sisters who teach at each of the schools, and both are alumnae of St. Benedict School. While Ashley Mertz teaches the seventh grade (7B) class of St. Benedict School, her sister, Hannah Mertz, teaches fifth graders in DuPont elementary school in Hopewell, Virginia. When graduation rolled around, Miss Mertz’s SBS seventh grade students brainstormed a project to help make the end of the year extra special for her sister’s fifth grade graduates. The SBS students purchased supplies for “middle school survival kits” and packaged and sent them off to the graduating class in Virginia. The SBS seventh grade and DuPont school fifth grade students have been pen pals all year long, making the end of year gifts a sign and token of appreciation for the special friendships they’ve formed over the past school year. Hats off to two teaching sisters for making the connection and starting a memorable tradition for years to come!

On May 22, students from Saint Leo the Great School C.A.L.L. club (Community, Action, Leo, Lions) hosted “Bundles for Babies” dress down day to help support the local Birthright organization of Red Bank. Birthright is an international organization that provides a variety of services to assist pregnant women in need and to help support a woman’s decision not to terminate their pregnancy. These services include various medical, psychological and financial assistance to the women in need. The organization has over 300 chapters worldwide. Saint Leo the Great C.A.L.L. club students organized the donation campaign in their school whereby every participating donator would give an item of choice to a pregnant woman in need and in return the students were granted to dress down. Donations included the most needed items at Birthright, namely diapers and baby wipes, as well as monetary contributions. The campaign was a huge success among the students, and the response was overwhelming. The Director of Birthright of Red Bank, Karen Fitzgerald, along with volunteers Peggy Webb and Isabel Lopez, came and visited Saint Leo’s and spoke with all the members of the C.A.L.L. club. They personally thanked the students and the members of administration for making this day possible. C.A.L.L. club mentor and fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Rosemary Devine, stated, “It was amazing to witness the generosity of our students and their families. Our children helping children is such a powerful show of support in meeting the needs of our local community” The sponsored dress down day raised over 1,200 dollars, 100 packs of diapers, 250 packs of wipes and other babies items such as clothes, blankets and hats. It was indeed a day of pride and joy at Birthright and Saint Leo the Great school, as well as for the many women who were the recipients of those generous and heartfelt donations. For further information on Birthright or to donate, visit www.birthright. org or call 1.800.550.4900.

2014 Steering Committee, left to right: Sr. Debbie Drago, Ada Sabol, Karen Stackhouse, Robin Graham, Dianne Baccala, Eve DeCarlo, Angela Ricciuti, and Georgiana Ryan.

Despite a questionable forecast, nearly 200 guests joined together at the Navesink Country Club on May 16 to support Collier Youth Services Annual Gala, “An Opportunity to Change.” The proceeds from the event will benefit Collier’s educational, residential and recreational programs that focus on at-risk, vulnerable young people. The evening featured live and silent auctions, raffles and entertainment by Hoi Polloi. A special moment during the evening took place when the attendees were addressed by Jaime Reinwald, a former Collier student who told of how Collier changed her life. Collier was pleased to honor Provident Bank and St. Gabriel’s Parish, Marlboro for their years of support of the mission of Collier Youth Services. Through their unique, highly regarded educational programs, residential group homes for young women, and summer recreational programs for disadvantaged children, Collier helps young people to overcome the adversity in their lives and to grow toward their potential in an environment that promotes belonging, dignity and hope.
