DON'T LEAVE YOUR PET IN A PARKED CAR Provided by Kathleen Schatzmann NJ State Director | The Humane Society of the United States
IT IS THAT TIME of year when we want to remind people about the dangers of leaving their pets in parked cars. Leaving a pet inside a car for a few minutes while you run out for a quick errand might seem harmless enough, but when the weather gets warmer it can be deadly. Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. It is important to note that rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car. It takes only minutes to save a life. Here is how you can help a pet left in a hot car. Take down the car’s make, model and license-plate num• ber. If there are businesses nearby, notify their managers or • security guards and ask them to make an announcement to find the car’s owner. If the owner can’t be found, call the non-emergency num• ber of the local police or animal control and wait by the car for them to arrive. You never know where you may see a pet in potential distress, so you will need to be ready to call for help. Gather essential telephone numbers and have them on hand. You’ll want to have your local animal control agency’s number and the police department’s non-emergency number so you can quickly report the situation. Keep these numbers in your car’s glove compartment or programmed into your phone. There are other ways to help too. Know the law. NJ state statutes 4:22-17a.3 and 4:22-26c state that you cannot “leave an animal unattended in a vehicle under inhumane conditions adverse to the health or welfare of the living animal or creature”. There are even some municipalities in NJ that have strengthened their local ordinances to include specific temperatures. Get informed by learning if your town has a specific law about referring to unattended pets in cars. If your town does not have a stronger ordinance than the state law prohibiting leaving pets in parked cars, contact your local representatives or attend a town hall meeting to start lobbying for one. You can also get involved by asking local store managers, shopping malls, restaurants and other businesses to post signs asking customers not to leave their pets in their cars while shopping or dining. The Humane Society of the United States’ hot car flyer can be distributed, which spells out the dangers of leaving pets in parked cars on their website. Another way to stay committed and aware is to sign our pledge that you will not leave your dog or other pet in a parked car. Then, share it with friends, along with tips on what to do if you see a pet in a parked car. Practice basic summer safety- never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time. PRE-PROM PROJECT
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Held at Colts Neck High School is a Reality Check
Colts Neck Police Officers perform a field sobriety test while Colts Neck First Aid and Fire help the victims in the crash.
PROM IS A SPECIAL TIME IN A STUDENT’S LIFE. It most often is a frightening time for parents. Although discussing the evils of drinking and driving is necessary between parents and their children, the words spoken may not be strong enough. Sergeant Kristian DeVito of the Colts Neck Police Department found a way to show students what actually can happen and all too often does to students who drink and drive. Enlisting the help of the Colts Neck First Aid, Fire and Police, several Colts Neck High School students and local residents, Sgt. DeVito presented the Pre-Prom Project on May 29, 2015 at the Colts Neck High School football field. She explained, “We attempted to make the scene as real as possible while making sure that the safety of all actors and participants was the top priority. It is important for the students to understand that one bad decision such as drinking and driving can end lives and destroy countless others.” Sgt. DeVito noted that all of the vehicles and actors were covered when the students arrived and sat in the bleachers. “I gave a quick introduction and set the stage for the crash. When the tarps were pulled back you could hear the students gasp and begin talking to each other about what they observed.” Sgt. DeVito said that Colts Neck Township police officers, first aid squad members, and fire department members rushed to the scene with lights and sirens and began treating patients and extricating patients that were trapped in the vehicles. A helicopter was called along with paramedics, but unfortunately there was a real life emergency in Jackson that required the helicopter and they were not able to participate. “The female prom queen, portrayed by Gigi Garrity, who was killed during the crash was placed into a body bag and put into the rear of a hearse that was provided by Holmdel Funeral Home. We then were able to have the driver of the vehicle wear special goggles that create the illusion of being under the influence of alcohol,” he further explained. The Prom car participants included Prom King Billy Berry; Prom Queen Gigi Garrity; and back seat passengers Tommy Brennan and Raeann Giannattasio. The family car participants who were a part of the mock crash demonstration included Faith O’Horo; Colts Neck Community Church Pastor Chris Durkin; James Pridmore; and Mark O’Horo. “Unfortunately, in town we have had to deal with many fatal accidents involving teen drivers and that is why this agency along with the emergency services puts so much time into providing as much information to the young drivers as possible,” shared Sgt. DeVito. “After the crash, we had a debriefing in the gym. I worked along with First Aid Members Captain Mike Spinella and Alex
Pridmore, and Fire Department Chief Mike Burke in setting up this presentation.” Members of the Emergency Response Teams who responded and assisted with this presentation included Colts Neck Police Sgt. K. DeVito; Sgt. B. Caswell; and Ptl. R. Goodspeed. First Aid members included Captain Mike Spinella; President Debbie Evankow; Steve Alaimo; Matt Alaimo; Emory Dedalis; Frank Delle Donne; Lauren Delle Donne; Heather Evankow; Chuck Fredda; Elaine Hempstead; Denise Horneck; Michal Kalisz; Jon Kopko; Nick Nuzzo; Dan Petrillo; Alex Pridmore; and Greg Williams. Firemen included Mike Burke; Jamie Jacoby; Mike Romano; Bob Zander; Bobby Ciasulli; Pat Kelly; and Joe Panetta. Special thanks to the following people who assisted in this presentation. M.A.D.D. State Program Director Brandon English; L & M Towing; Holmdel Funeral Home; Monoc, (even though the helicopter didn’t get to us, they did a huge amount of work for us behind the scenes!); Dawn from the Monmouth County Radio Room Field com; Anita and Emory Dedalis from the Colts Neck Drug and Alcohol Alliance; Colts Neck High School personnel Mr. Simon; Mr. Donahue; and Mr. Styler, Building Supervisor. Also, Video camera operator Jessi Pridmore; Makeup artist Sam Alagin; and Stills photographer Michael Kalisz. Colts Neck Community Church Pastor Chris Durkin, who was in the family car used for the presentation, said, “The Pre-Prom Project at Colts Neck High School was a great opportunity to make our students aware of the very important life decisions they make every single day, but especially around prom time. We wanted to encourage them to not only think about the fun they would have that night, but also how the decisions they make that night could rob them of all of the great decisions they could be making for the rest of their lives. We wanted them to think long term - and sometimes dramatic examples are necessary to do that.” Sgt. DeVito hopes to make the Pre-Prom Project a yearly event. “If not, we will make sure it is done every other year so that every student will have the opportunity to witness this mock crash demonstration.” Colts Neck High School Juniors and Seniors watch the Pre-Prom Project unfold before their eyes.

OVER 50 YEARS Colts Neck Mayor Jim Schatzle (left) and Northeast Planning Corporation’s CEO Steven Ferrara cutting the ribbon along with many of the Colts Neck branch office advisors on June 12, 2015.
N
ortheast Planning Corporation began 50 years ago as a small neighborhood insurance agency in Newark, New Jersey, and was designed to serve the Ironbound community. “The business was started by my father Al Ferrara in 1964. I joined him in 1974 to help him build the business, and we grew from four people in 1974 to approximately 120 people today,” explained CEO Steven Ferrara. He noted that the business grew from insurance to investments to a full service planning firm for individuals and their families and business needs. The Corporate Headquarters is located at 1150 Raritan Road in Cranford, New Jersey. Ferrara has opened a new branch office for Northeast Planning in Colts Neck, which is located at 293 Route 34. “Our newest branch that is being opened in Colts Neck has special meaning because it is like we are coming back home. My family and I lived here for almost 20 years, my kids grew up here. My children Christopher, Danielle, and Alexandria attended Colts Neck schools. We have many friends and many clients in Colts Neck and Monmouth County and are very happy to now have a branch in this great location to serve the community even better,” said Ferrara.

Northeast Planning Corporation Opens New Branch in Colts Neck STORY SUSAN MURPHY
The Colts Neck branch office has a special meaning for Ferrara and his family. “The building is The Christopher Building, which is named for my son Christopher who was the third generation of our family in the business. He played an integral role in our continued development until his untimely death. We are honored that his name lives on through Awards and Scholarships in his memory; and now he has a building named after him in the town that he grew up in and loved,” shared Ferrara. Northeast Planning Corporation is designed to help families and small/medium sized businesses with all of their Insurance/Retirement/ Planning needs. They primarily work with individuals and families with their college planning, insurance planning, savings, retirement and estate planning needs. They work with businesses to help owners and employees understand their Employee Benefits, whether they are Medical, 401k, or other Retirement benefits, as well as business planning for Succession, Buy-Sell, and Business Insurance Planning. They have 75 Advisors trained in all of these various areas and supported by Specialists in all areas of Investment and Insurance and Financial Planning. “We are in an accelerated growth mode and hiring advisors to service

our clients and develop new clients,” said Ferrara. The business has over 30,000 clients in the Tri-State area and approximately 25% of them are in the Monmouth County area. He explained, “We look for people with interpersonal and strong communication/people skills, as well as someone looking to build a practice for themselves. We offer a comprehensive training program that goes for three years and includes being a member of a proven and successful team specializing in specific markets. After five years, a financial advisor can qualify for their own detached (franchise) office.” Ferrara stressed that Northeast Planning is still a family business, even with all of its growth. “We offer someone who works with us a balance of large corporate level support and expertise along with the high touch and close knit feel of a family business. Our clients are each provided high level service and are valued as a preferred client no matter their size. Our only asset is our clients and our advisors and all of our many support personnel to them.” Today, Northeast Planning Corporation continues to serve its clients in Colts Neck, Monmouth County, and throughout New Jersey by offering the same strong support, understanding, and integrity that was its foundation in 1964.

LINCROFT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HELD
Fun Day
STORY DINA QUINTANO
ON A BEAUTIFUL AND SUNNY SPRING DAY, Lincroft Elementary School held its annual Fun Day event. Fun Day, held on May 29, 2015, is the most-anticipated day of the year for the students. The classes are all divided equally into four teams - yellow, green, blue and red. They all compete in events such as the Spartan Race, Over-Under, Scuba Race, Wheelbarrow Relay, Madden Chicken Throw, Bean Bag Toss and the Obstacle Course. The Scuba Race was a new event, where they had to run a race wearing flippers, a tube and googles, which created many laughs among the students. The kids got to throw balls at the Dunk Tank, dropping many of the student’s Dads into the tank. The DJ played music throughout the day in the courtyard, allowing the students a chance to dance while waiting for their next event. The PTA treated the students to a pizza lunch and ice pops. The day culminated with the 5th grade Tug of War, which was won by Mrs. Frazee’s Class. The co-chairs of the event were Jen Donovan and Deirdre Blasucci, who shared, “Fun Day 2015 was a huge success! It was a beautiful day and all of the students, staff and volunteers enjoyed the many events. What an amazing day for the students at Lincroft School!”

The Monmouth County SPCA (MCSPCA) recently announced it has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Banfield Charitable Trust to support the shelter’s Pet Pantry Program. This grant will provide funds for the purchase of pet food and cat litter to be distributed to pet owners experiencing difficult financial times who cannot afford to feed and care for their pets without assistance. The Monmouth County SPCA Pet Pantry helps people in Monmouth County struggling financially by providing food and other pet care items, as well as financial support for spay/ neuter surgeries, vaccinations, microchips and preventable illness treatments. During economic hardship, families often must choose between feeding and caring for their pets and paying household bills or purchasing human food. The Pet Pantry initiative, which began after Hurricane Sandy to help impacted individuals and families care for their pets, quickly grew into a program that helps pet owners experiencing difficult financial times keep their beloved pets at home and cared for rather than surrendered to our shelter. With a strong support structure and access to food and supplies, pet owners are less likely to surrender their pet to a shelter, preventing shelters from becoming overcrowded. MCSPCA is currently supporting more than 1,000 families/3,000 pets through their Pet Pantry program. With the momentum seen in 2014, that number is expected to increase to 4,000 pets in 2015. “During 2014, the number of animals surrendered to the MCSPCA dropped by 15% due largely to the impact of our Pet Pantry Program. We are grateful to the Banfield Charitable Trust for their support in helping us expand this vital program to the community”, said Jerry Rosenthal, CEO & President of the Monmouth County SPCA.
About the Monmouth County SPCA The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 1945 to care for the community’s homeless, neglected and abused animals. Their mission is to protect and advocate for all animals. They are dedicated to enforcing animal cruelty laws; providing a safe haven for homeless, abused and abandoned pets while they await adoption; reducing pet over-population through spay/neutering; and cultivating their humane treatment through education and service . In 2013 they cared for more than 4,000 animals. The Monmouth County SPCA relies solely on private donations to fund these important initiatives. They provide services to the community including pet adoptions, low cost spay/neuter services, a weekly vaccine clinic, dog training and behavior, humane law enforcement, lost and found, trap neuter and return for free-roaming cats, humane education, pet therapy, a pet food pantry for low-income families as well as the Pittie Project, a proactive program to help keep Bully Breeds out of the shelter and improve their lives in the community.
TWO RIVER THEATER’S 5th annual Crossing Borders festival of new plays by Latino writers will take place this summer from August 5th through August 9th, 2015. Over the course of the festival, Two River will present readings of plays by Cuban and Cuban-American playwrights. The festival will also include live music, an outdoor neighborhood party, and conversations with artists. Two River Theater launched the Crossing Borders festival in 2011 to create opportunities for Latino theater artists and foster a stronger relationship between the theater and Red Bank’s Latino community. In addition to developing new plays that have gone on to full productions at Two River and elsewhere, the festival has helped spark other audience engagement initiatives, including Nosotros, an ongoing series of conversations and storytelling workshops created and led by playwright Tanya Saracho (whose work has been part of all four festivals) and curator/director Jerry Ruiz. A company of writers, directors, and actors will be in residence at Two River throughout this year’s five-day festival. All readings will take place in Two River’s Marion Huber Theater. Each reading will be followed by a reception in Two River’s Victoria J. Mastrobuono Library.

Holmdel’s Village School Annual
Carnival Fundraiser On May 29, 2015 - the PSA sponsored its annual carnival fundraiser at Village School. The weather could not be more perfect – the sun in the sky was as bright as the happy faces of all the children who attended the carnival. As students were dismissed from school, they found the school grounds were transformed into a carnival. There were many attractions to be enjoyed – while the DJ played, students and their family could enjoy the comedy and skills of the Village School stilt walker; singing karaoke; enjoying games and rides; having their faces transformed into wild animals, super heroes or princesses; and, having a unique balloon animal designed by the balloon artists. Many other kids participated in sack racing, crafts donated by Learning Express, and having their hair beaded. And, Cracked Olive was on the scene cooking up special treats for all to enjoy. Kids also were treated to popcorn and cotton candy. The carnival included a successful raffle of baskets donated by each class. This year, the grand prizes were spectacular – a $500 Gift Certificate to Gary Michaels Fine Jewelry; Disney Hopper Passes; Yankee Tickets for four; a Jenkinson Fun Basket; and, an iPad mini. This was the first year that the two cochairs of this event, Paula Blalock and Suzanne Serini, organized the carnival. They both worked tirelessly to try to work within a strict budget, while also increasing the amount of attractions and put their own twist on the event. Their efforts did not go unnoticed as many parents commented on what a great time they had. Both co-chairs were pleased with the event. “This event was not possible without all the support
and help of the Village School parents, as well as the students from Satz and the High School who volunteered to help us with the attractions on the day of the event.” A highlight of the day was the Principal Pie Toss. Some children waited on line way in advance of this event to get a shot at hitting Mr. Brian Schillaci square in the face! The PSA Executive Board thanks all of the parents of Village School who contributed to the success of the carnival. A large number of parents contributed food and drink to the event, which helped to defray the costs. “Everything that the PSA accomplishes for the Village School community is made possible by the commitment, enthusiasm and passion of the parents, teachers and administrators who dedicate their time to making our children’s educational experience the best it can be,” said Vice President of Communications Danielle Impreveduto. The event was such a success that the PSA Executive Board is looking forward to making a substantial gift of technology to the District. PSA President Vicky Flynn noted that she has discussions all year with Mr. Schillaci regarding the needs of the school to assist the PSA in its fundraising goals, and noted that the success of this year’s carnival has made that gift possible. “I cannot thank enough my fellow executive board members for doing all they can to contribute to this event. Danielle, Tammi, Paula, Suzanne, Michelle and Ann Marie can be counted on to make sure any event that the PSA sponsors goes off without a hitch.” The PSA is already in the planning stages for next year!

Inaugural HFEE 5k at Bell Works is a Great Success!
The HFEE hosted its first ever 5k and kids fun run held at Bell Works on May 31, 2015, and it was a huge success. The event attracted more than 300 participants, ranging in age from four to 72, and several young stroller passengers! The warm and sunny Sunday morning started with a one mile fun run for kids. One hundred children lined up for Mayor Eric Hinds to kick off the race. Everyone ran and walked their hearts out before receiving medals at the finish line from the Mayor and other volunteers. After the fun run, it was time for the opening ceremony. HFEE Co-President Brian Kennedy took a few minutes to welcome everyone and thank Bell Works and the many generous sponsors (see HFEE.org for a complete list of sponsors!). The 5K race was run in honor of the late Eric Hausser. Señor Hausser was a beloved Spanish teacher at Satz School and a favorite among his students. A picture of his reknowned red sneakers adorned the signage and race t-shirts. Mr. Sean Dowd, a veteran teacher in the Holmdel District, spoke about Señor Hausser: “I was lucky enough to work alongside Eric for eight years at Satz School. We all remember him on this special day as a dedicated teacher with a heart of gold”. HFEE donated a portion of the event proceeds to the Eric Scott Hausser Scholarship Fund. Several members of Señor Hausser’s family, including his
22
parents, sister, brother-in-law and niece, were on hand to accept a plaque commemorating the event, a duplicate of which will be displayed at Satz School. Mayor Hinds welcomed the runners to the starting line, spoke a few words about the Bell Works site and officially started the race. The crowd of runners and walkers traversed the pathways and greenery of the property with the backdrop of the former Bell Labs building gleaming in the sun. Supporters lined the route and handed out water to refresh the runners in the heat. Local photographer Jack Hipschman, a 7th grader at Satz, captured the spirit of the race and shared photos online afterwards. Everyone was applauded as they crossed the finish line and grabbed water and snacks, courtesy of generous sponsors. The top runners in each age category were given a trophy but the overall winner was the Holmdel community. Afterwards, runners were asked what they thought of the course. Overall race winner Thomas Hunt, who finished in 19 minutes, 48 seconds, said, “It was a good open course and very scenic”. Ashley Guarnaccia “I enjoyed running the race with my mom and friends, but I need to train more for the next one!” Mayor Hinds was excited about the event: “These are the kinds of events that I love to see. Thank you to the HFEE for putting this event together.” Brian Jackman, HFEE trustee and race organizer said, “Thank you to all participants sponsors and the many volunteers – this could not have happened without all your help.” Lead race organizer and HFEE trustee Lauren Podesta was delighted with the success, “For our first event, we expected around 100 people but ended up with more than 350 participants, family members and volunteers. We have plenty to learn from the race and received excellent suggestions from everyone to make our 2016 event even better!”

HOLMDEL-COLTS NECK

Ready for the cameras! Holmdel student Nicole DiBlasi on the set of Showtime’s “Happyish”.
NINE-YEAR-OLD NICOLE DIBLASI graduated from third grade at Holmdel Village School early in June. This exciting time in her life was parallel to another memorable moment. Miss Nicole DiBlasi was chosen for a principal role in “Happyish,” Showtime’s new TV series! On Father’s Day, June 21, 2015, Nicole portrayed a student in a Hebrew school, and was joined by other students as they sang several songs. Nicole, who was wearing a blue top and sitting next to the teacher, was smiling and relaxed. What a great Father’s Day gift for her Dad! This was Nicole’s first principal role, stated Mrs. Vicki DiBlasi. “She finally got her big break and she is so excited!” This young Holmdel resident is a six-year-veteran of auditioning and modeling, and is quite comfortable being in front of a camera. Beginning at age three and up to the present, Nicole’s impressive portfolio consists of being a showroom model for J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, and The Monet Group; as well as background work in a commercial for Jennie-O, and background work in a TV series, "Flesh and Bone." This busy young girl enjoys dance and gymnastics classes; and takes acting and vocal lessons. Nicole shared her thoughts on auditioning and described what her behind-the-scenes experience was like. “I love to make new friends and meet people from different places. Being on set is so much fun. There is a lot of awesome food and snacks all day long. It is so much fun getting my hair done and working with the crew!”
Congratulations, Nicole!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR LAST SUMMER, the Holmdel Township Committee introduced and then unanimously passed an ordinance that changed zoning in southern Holmdel to allow for a commercial mega-sports complex to be built on Route 520. For months, Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) took action against the Committee’s plan, as did the newly formed Save Holmdel Village (SHV) and Concerned Citizens for Stable Development (CCSD), a group of Colts Neck residents who instituted litigation against
32
Holmdel. On May 19th, as a result of the pressure exerted by these local citizens, the Township Committee formally rescinded their zoning change and fortunately the developer walked away. While we are thankful for the good outcome, we realize that this was a stressful, time-consuming and expensive circumstance created by a Township Committee that tried to make a significant change to the character of our town without obtaining adequate input from community residents.

End of the Sports Complex for Holmdel/Colts Neck/Marlboro CILU has been Holmdel’s community and environmental watchdog since 1998. Completely volunteer and bi-partisan, our mission is to maintain the semi-rural character of our town, protect our watershed and promote government transparency. We will work with government officials of both parties who sincerely strive to fulfill those goals. If they don’t, we will not be shy about voicing our opinion. We now urge residents who were involved with the sports complex controver-
sy to stay engaged in local township affairs. Please also consider joining CILU (www.cilu-holmdel.org) as we look to the future of this magnificent 90-acre property and explore outside funding sources for preserving it in perpetuity.

DIVORCE TALK For most people going through a divorce, it is their first experience with the legal system and with a lawyer. So, what can you expect? Indeed, what should you expect?
CANDOR You should expect to be candid with your lawyer. Your lawyer can only help you and protect your legal rights if you tell him everything. Holding back puts him at a disadvantage, which puts you at a disadvantage. The last place your lawyer wants to learn something about you is from your spouse’s lawyer. Conversely, you should expect candor from your lawyer. The reason you hired a lawyer is because you need a professional with knowledge of the law and experience in navigating the legal system to help you get through the process. Your lawyer is required to give you his honest, objective assessment. Sometimes that means telling you what you want to hear. But, sometimes it means telling you what you might not like to hear. Only when you tell your lawyer everything and he objectively assesses your case with the knowledge you have shared, can you and he devise the strategy most calculated to achieve your goals. You’re not hiring a “yes man”. You’re hiring someone who is trained to deal with the negatives in your case in the most effective way possible. DILIGENCE You should expect your lawyer to know you and to know your case. Only through preparation and hard work can your lawyer know the case better than anyone else in the room – whether it’s
EXPECTATIONS EXPECTATIONS a conference room or a courtroom. There is no substitute for preparation. Knowing the case puts you in a position of strength which becomes apparent early on and gives your spouse and your spouse’s lawyer a clear message. Diligence also allows your lawyer to properly assess the strengths and weaknesses of the case (no case is perfect – they all have weaknesses to some degree) so that strengths can be exploited and weaknesses can be strategically minimized. COMMUNICATION This is your lawyer’s case, but it’s your life. You should expect to be informed regularly about developments in your case. You should receive copies of everything that comes into or goes out of your lawyer’s office about your case. When you are informed, you don’t have to imagine what is going on. You can deal with reality, not fantasy. When you are informed, you can make better decisions. Your goals can be more intelligently formed and you can participate more fully as a member of your team (your lawyer, his staff and you). The lawyer should put himself in the client’s position and imagine how he would feel if it were his divorce and he was kept in the dark. He probably wouldn’t like it. You shouldn’t either. PAYMENT Family lawyers work hard in a field fraught with emotion, emergencies, and real issues gravely important to real people and families. Most are committed to advocating zealously and fairly for their clients and to achieving their clients’ reasonable goals. As you are entitled and expect to be paid for the work you do, family lawyers are entitled and expect to be paid for the work

they do. Therefore, you should expect to pay your lawyer in a timely manner for the services rendered to you. You should expect to receive, review and sign a retainer agreement which clearly outlines the financial arrangement for representation. Your lawyer should sign it, too. This is your contract. It is an important legal document required by the Supreme Court of New Jersey in all divorce cases. You should also expect to regularly receive itemized bills so you will know what specific services have been rendered and what you are paying for. You, as the client, should have certain expectations when it comes to candor, communication, diligence, and payment of fees. Equally important, however, is the fact that, in each category there are expectations for the client to fulfill. It’s a two way street which, when accepted equally by the client and the lawyer, sets a course for success. PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ. Peter C. Colts Neck Resident Crowned Mrs. New Jersey America Story Susan Murphy
Thirty-one year-old Colts Neck resident Erin Molinaro was crowned Mrs. New Jersey America 2015 on May 9, 2015.
THIS HONOR was even more exciting due to the fact that Mrs. Molinaro was previously crowned Miss Teen New Jersey USA 2001 and Miss New Jersey USA 2007. She is now a Triple Crown title holder in the state of New Jersey and as far as she knows, the only person in New Jersey history to ever win all three of these honors! Mrs. Molinaro participated in her first pageant at the age of seven in White Plains, New York. It was her only pageant as a young girl. “From a young age I have
My parents saw talent in me at a young age and they encouraged me to participate in many different arenas to share and showcase my talent, and to never give up. Pageants are an incredible way to not only do so but also to give back to your state and local communities. With my background as a singer I was able to share my talent with many different organizations and help raise awareness and funds,” she explained. At the age of 17, Mrs. Molinaro won the title of Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2001.
month in Texas.” Winning the title for Miss New Jersey USA 2007 led her to the Miss USA competition in Los Angeles, California for a month. “I have always watched pageants from a young age and was inspired and empowered by the young women and women who represented their states. I thought it was an incredible opportunity and accomplishment to do so. My mother Patricia has also been my biggest fan and encourager to shoot for the stars.” Studying and acting since the age of eight, Mrs. Molina-

ro has been on such television shows as Boston Public, 30 Rock, and Nip Tuck. “After the Miss USA pageant,
I had made great contacts in Los Angeles with agents and managers to help pursue my career in the entertainment industry.” After the pageant, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue this dream and had the opportunity to guest star on these shows along with many modeling print ads. When she returned to New Jersey, Mrs. Molinaro appeared on QVC. Her singing has been nurtured from a young age when she recalls singing in church, nursing homes, musical productions, and for family and friends at events. “Over my life I have had the opportunity to record and collaborate with many different songwriters in New York City, Los Angeles, and more recently Nashville. When living in Los Angeles I had the opportunity to go to Nashville and record and work with Stephen Allen Davis. During the time we worked together, we had one of the singles hit

the radio in Nashville, which was an incredible accomplishment and feeling.” Unfortunately, Mrs. Molinaro had to take a break from singing to have vocal cord surgery to remove polyps that were affecting her singing voice. She took a break to do this and retrained her voice. Each crown Mrs. Molinaro won came at a different stage in her life; each one giving her unique experiences. “Miss New Jersey Teen allowed me to experience what representing the state would be like and allowed me to help and be a part of so many organizations and great causes.” Named the first Teen D.A.R.E. spokesperson in the state of New Jersey, she was able to spread drug awareness at schools. “Miss New Jersey was a goal I had because my experience as Miss New Jersey Teen was so incredible I wanted to represent the state yet again, but this time as a young adult to empower and inspire other women and young girls.” It also opened many doors to her career which led to success on many different levels. “Mrs. New Jersey America was my final turn in the pageant world and my Triple Crown win! This has marked a chapter in my life that has allowed me to do so many incredible things and experience so much that it is hard to put into words. I am able to reflect back and be proud of all I have done. Mrs. New Jersey America is that much more special to me because not only is it an accomplish-
ment to represent this great state once again, but I get to share it with my best friend and soul mate Anthony. Life has brought me much success, but also much adversity which I have overcome, and I do believe that my experiences and the people I have met over the years has made me the strong woman I am today. As a modern married woman, I feel I have so much to share and give to other women to inspire and empower them to believe in themselves. I hope to touch people’s lives through this final year as Mrs. New Jersey America.” An important part of Mrs. Molinaro’s life has been volunteer work. “Everyone is touched by something in their life that may change their perspective on things. Whether it is knowing a loved one with cancer or autism, or someone battling MS or diabetes, it is important to support a cause that you feel a connection with or have been touched by because you never know if one day you may need a volunteer helping your cause. It’s a type of “pay it forward” mentality I have when it comes to volunteering. When I am asked or have been asked to help at an event, I do so, I support all causes because they are all equally important and all deserve a voice and awareness all around.” Mrs. Molinaro and her husband Anthony also sell pound cakes locally. A portion of the proceeds go to The American Cancer Society. “Local Colts Neck residents may see the
Tony’s Pound Cakes (Cakes for cancer) sign. We sell these famous pound cakes in honor of his father Anthony James Molinaro who passed away of cancer. It is a secret family recipe and custom pans that make people come back for more!” When there is time to relax, Mrs. Molinaro enjoys cooking, golfing, gardening, working out, boating, Stand Up paddle boarding, and singing. She and her husband enjoy spending time with their three dogs. Two Great Pyrenees dogs that are 150 pounds, named Bentley and Georgia; and a Beagle named Gia. One of her
favorite ways to spend a day is with family, friends and her husband at their home cooking and sitting on the back patio. “Family and friends to us is our most precious gift of all and we cherish our time together with them. Without their continuous love and support I would not have been able to accomplish what I have,” she shared. Looking forward to the year ahead as Mrs. New Jersey America 2015, Mrs. Molinaro said, “The next step for me is to win Mrs. America this year and be able to share these experiences with women all over the country!”

Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

Colts Neck Library Spelling Bee Hits 12-Year Mark
Left to right: Mrs. Desmond, Sophia Dietrich (winner of the Spelling Bee) and Mrs. Plumfield
IT MAY NOT RESEMBLE the Scripp’s National Spelling Bee in intensity, but fourth grade students in Colts Neck provided plenty of entertainment in the annual Colts Neck Friends of the Library (FOL) Spelling Bee. The enthusiastic fourth grade students and their families arrived at the Colts Neck Library on June 5, 2015 to take part in the 12th annual Spelling Bee. Their science teacher, Mrs. Plumfield, volunteered to read the words to the spellers. Although each student was serious about wanting to win, it was gratifying to see the fourth graders cheer their classmates on. In keeping with tradition, the spellers were ensured a successful first round – they only had to spell their first names.
This allowed the students to practice using the microphone and to alleviate some of the anxiety. (A misspelled name would not disqualify the contestant!). The group spelled almost 200 words before the final showdown between Sophia Deitrich and Lauren Alagna. The winning word was “usually” and Sophia took first place, Lauren finished in second place, Joseph DiFoglia was third and honorable mention was awarded to Jack D’Eletto. Every speller received a ribbon and the final four each received a trophy. The top three spellers also were given a cash prize of $100, $75 and $50 respectively. The contest is open to all fourth graders residing in Colts Neck. The FOL Board was on hand to run the event.

Co-president LiliAnn Paras chaired the event and invited the community to learn more about the FOL and co-president Michele Battista served as judge and photographer. The board looks forward to meeting next year’s group of spellers. The Colts Neck Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization formed to support the Colts Neck Library and runs several programs for the community, including the Art and Photography Show, Book Sale, Spelling Bee, Garden, Book Club and more. It is always seeking new members and is a great way to serve in a friendly atmosphere. Please leave your contact information at the front desk of the Colts Neck Library.

COLTS NECK BASED FOUNDATION Daniela’s Wish granted a wish to Lincroft resident Jack Esposito on June 18, 2015. Jack was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in August 2014. His original wish was to have an Ice Cream Social for the Lincroft School 5th grade to celebrate his return to school this year, but because of his compromised immune system, he has not been able to return. Jack still wanted to celebrate with his class so he decided to treat the 5th grade to an Ice Cream Social at the end of the school year. Jack could have wished for anything, but he said, “I asked for the ice cream party so I could celebrate feeling better with all of my friends.” Tasty Treats Ice Cream truck, owned by Shawn Thomas, arrived at 12:00 noon and all the 5th grad-

ers gathered in the all purpose room. They each got to pick their favorite ice cream because of Jack’s wish! Daniela Olt is an amazing young girl from Colts Neck who is a true inspiration and is on a mission to help others. At the age of seven, she began Daniela’s Wish because she wanted to help children during their time of sadness or need. Daniela met Jack last year at Monmouth Medical; he has become a very special friend now. Sheila Olt, Daniela’s mom said this of Daniela, “She feels they connect because like her, Jack thinks of others and not just a wish for himself. She thought that his wish was noble and fantastic to include all his friends. She holds a special place in her heart for her friend Jack, who never stops smiling.”

LINCROFT SCHOOL HOSTS 2K COLOR RUN FOR STUDENT STORY DINA QUINTANO
LINCROFT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL hosted a 2K Color Run at the school on June 12, 2015. The Colors for Courage Run was organized to benefit the Esposito Family. Jack Esposito is a 5th grade student at Lincroft who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in August 2014. Jack has not been able to attend classes due to the intense treatment he has been receiving, but he does attend many of the 5th grade events that have taken place this past school year. It was a hot and humid afternoon but that did not deter the 550 friends, families and Lincroft staff from

running and showing their support for Jack. All the participants gathered in the courtyard where Mr. Graziano, the principal of Lincroft Elementary School, presented the Esposito family with a check. Jack’s Mom, Colleen, said, “We continue to be overwhelmed by the love and support of our Lincroft friends. We are touched by the kindness shown and we are happy to have all of them on ‘Team Jack’.” The DJ played some great tunes and after a quick stretch everyone preceded to the starting line. The starting line was under an arch of balloons and the race continued for

three laps around the back of the school. The participants ran past three stations and were doused with colored powder. The Color Run in general is not about speed; it is about having fun and spending time with friends and family. This Color Run was even more special because it was for a great cause. After the run, the participants enjoyed some water, fruit and granola bars, all donated by Wegman’s of Ocean Township. Acme of Lincroft gave the family a gift card and the Daly Family from JDGrafx gave the school a great discount on the t-shirts and the family a donation.

SAINT LEO THE GREAT SUPPORTS STUDENT IN CAUSE The community of Saint Leo the Great “Walked with Stanley”, a 5th grade student at the school, in support of the May 31st NYC flagship walk for Cystic Fibrosis. The picture says it all! Although the community may not have been able to walk in New York City, the student body of Saint Leo the Great School “WALKED” with Stanley on May 21, 2015 as they dressed down and made a voluntary donation to this important cause. Although the donation was voluntary, the school raised a few thousand dollars in donations for the much needed scientific research for the disease. Even though Stanley, who has Cystic Fibrosis, was not able to be in attendance at school during this time, he felt the tremendous support from his community. Stanley has been ‘schooling from home’ due to a needed intense IV home therapy, which entailed a PICC line for a few weeks. The Zolek family is beyond thankful and overwhelmed by the support they have received by their Saint Leo the Great School. The family states, “We are so fortunate to be a part of this remarkable and supportive community. You have truly made an impact in Stanley’s life. THANK YOU for not only helping Stanley but also for instilling the proper values, faith, compassion and education in all the kids!” Cystic Fibrosis is a devastating disease that effects the lungs, pancreas and leads to life threatening lung infections. There is no cure. The Zolek’s have been fighting CF and working very closely with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since Stanley’s birth 11 years ago. Stanley is the poster child for the Foundation and has played a key role in the annual Great Strides event in NYC since he was 9 months old. To date, the Zolek family, their friends and community have raised over a half million dollars for the disease. The Zolek family and the CF Foundation are extremely thankful for the support they receive from our community and they attribute their son’s physical and mental strength to their family, friends and community’s support. NJX/MADRID U-14 SOCCER TEAMS PREPARES FOR TRIP OF A LIFETIME THIS SUMMER, THE NJX/MADRID U-14 TRAVEL SOCCER TEAM is taking the trip of a lifetime. In August, the boys will travel to Europe to play against European youth soccer leagues and experience soccer on different levels and in different countries. Along with their families, they will also have the opportunity to attend a number of professional matches and see soccer excitement and enthusiasm firsthand. The planned stops are Belgium, Amsterdam and Paris. This NJX Madrid U-14 team has been together for a long time – and the core of this group has been with me since they were 6 years old. Formerly known as the Broncos, we have had a great run, not only with memorable soccer experiences, but also with a true positive team environment. Just this past year we won the Columbus Day EDP Cup Tournament, and are currently ranked 4th in the state. But our successes are truly built by the young men I have had the honor of watch grow— as gentlemen and as soccer players. Of course the team has added a few players each year, but the transitions have been seamless and the team has actually grown stronger. (Ironically, five of our newer players were actually children of past head coaches – so I also have a very seasoned parent group!) As a past player at Villanova, I have always been passionate about teaching my kids the right way to play soccer. I joined my oldest son’s travel group and was the primary trainer for the first five years. I then brought in a former teammate and highly successful coach Kenny Santos, who trained the boys for two years. Currently, the boys are under the direction of trainer Nick Barron, who previously worked in the Birmingham City FC Academy and the Premier League as a regional Player Scout & Player Recruitment Officer. That expertise, coupled with the help of Assistant Coach (and Team Doctor) Frank Costa, ensures that we remain a strong and competitive team. The boys have had a variety of guest trainers including Division 1 Head Coaches Rob McCourt (Monmouth), Tom Carlin

STORY ERIC HINDS, HEAD COACH
(Villanova) Dennis Bohn (Lafayette) and even a few sessions with Red Bull coach Mike Petke. The boys love getting this exposure and it promotes their love of the game. One or two sessions with these guys are not going to alter their game but it can inspire and make them believe. We want them to become better players but we believe strongly that this is up to them! No coach or trainer can make you great…only YOU make YOU great! We also believe that the actual game of soccer is the best trainer of all and that the more kids play, the better they will get! Back to Europe - this trip is something I have wanted to do for quite some time. About 18 years ago, I took a group of 15 year old boys to Italy and Holland, and the experience for many of the kids is still talked about today. It was an awesome time filled with great soccer and for most of the kids, a real chance of a lifetime. Soccer in Europe is still by far the dominant sport, so for kids to feel the passion and see the culture there is priceless. Now, I want my team to enjoy this experience, and see a few great cities. I personally chose these three primarily because I wanted to take the team to Belgium. Not only is it the country where my Mother is from, but also currently has one of the best youth programs and has really become a World Power. Since the country is so small, it was easy to visit Amsterdam and then finally end in Paris. We will have plenty of soccer, but we also felt with all the money and planning that we wanted to visit places that had great culture…and amazing food! Finally, a big thank you to our sponsors!! We could not have made this trip available for all the boys without the help of our sponsors!! I am very proud to say that the sponsors and other fund raising allowed all our boys to go for free!! So big thanks to D’Amico Construction, Frantastix Cleaning LLC, Merrill Lynch, Noah’s Ark Construction, Progress Capital Advisors, Saturn Overhead Equipment, Sea Coast Family Chiropractic, Total Financial Concepts and Wall Stadium Speedway.

The fundraising activities the scouts do allows the Troop to organize different activities so they can learn valuable skills, like how to support their community, communication and respect. The Troop participated in a Webelos Woods event at a nature stall to expose them to scouting and teach them nature skills. This once-a-year opportunity is a very enjoyable learning experience for both Weblos and scouts. The scouts learn the skill to teach and mentor young Cub Scouts about nature. Finally, the Troop took a day trip to the Delaware Water Gap for a 10-mile long canoe trip down the Delaware River. They started in the morning and stopped mid-day to take a lunch break at a campsite on the river. The scouts swam in the river and learned how to create a bonfire. The scouts and their families had fun canoeing and watching the natural scenery. The whole camping trip was an enriching experience for everyone and was a wonderful way to spend the weekend. On each trip, the scouts learn leadership and life skills in a fun and responsible way. Next camping trips include a fishing trip on Miss Belmar and Forestburgh Summer Camp. Boy Scouts is a non-profit organization and is for boys 1117 years old. You can join at any time. Please send an email to Join@Troop290.com and the troop will respond back. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, check out their website, www.Pack90NJ. com, or send an email to Join@pack90nj.com. For information on Venture Crew 290, for young men and women from ninth grade through age 20, please contact Vicki Sherman at 732.308.9820 or Sherman_05@yahoo.com.

RBC 2015 Graduate Heading to London to Pursue Passion for Shakespeare Ellie Moonan, 2015 RBC graduate, has been accepted to attend Shakespeare’s Globe Summer School in London. She is one of about 20 students from around the world who will be spending two weeks this summer at the famous Globe Theater working with leading actors, directors and scholars. Ellie shared her excitement about the experience, saying how she is “completely honored and humbled by this life changing experience.” She added that “everyday it becomes a little more real that I am actually going to be standing at
SINGERS INVITED TO MONMOUTH CIVIC CHORUS The Monmouth Civic Chorus invites singers to a Summer Sing of lovely Requiem settings by Gabriel Fauré and John Rutter on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at the air-conditioned Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 112 Middletown Road, Holmdel. The admission fee of $5 at the door includes refreshments and score loan. No advance reservations needed. The Fauré Requiem is a hauntingly beautiful piece, written in Paris in 1902. It has been called “a lullaby of death” because the composer envisioned paradise as a haven for the soul. The Rutter Requiem, written in 1985, is known for its ethereal soprano solo, Pie Jesu (Merciful Jesus). The composer is renowned as the conductor of the Cambridge Singers, one of Britain’s best-loved choirs. The Sing is an opportunity to get to know the awardwinning Monmouth Civic Chorus and its Artistic Director, Dr. Ryan Brandau. Dr. Brandau holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the Yale School of Music, an MPhil in historical musicology from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), and a BA in Music from Princeton University. Dr. Brandau is Artistic Director of Princeton Pro Musica and Amor Artis, and works with the Symphonic Choir of Westminster Choir College. Singers are invited to audition for the Monmouth Civic Chorus 2015-16 season. Audition appointments are available on Wednesday evenings in Red Bank beginning in September. For membership information or an audition appointment, visit monmouthcivicchorus.org, e-mail membership@monmouthcivicchorus.org or call 732.933.9333.
