Local High School Football Players Help to Clean-up Colts Neck On May 22, 2016, the Colts Neck High School Football team worked together with Colts Neck 5th Quarter Club (a non-profit organization) and Colts Neck Clean Communities program to remove trash and litter from Route 537. This was one of the first organized events of the 5th Quarter Club and it was a tremendous turn-out of volunteers despite the rainy weather. Teri Lombardo, one of the non-profit founders who took part in the event, noted, "The cleanup was a major success, it was great to see these football players volunteer their time and take pride in their community. Today was not about football, but about working together to make a positive impact in the community." A big thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help with the community cleanup. Special thanks to local Fire Police who were also there and helped keep the volunteers safe. Volunteer football players were Evan Smolski, Carmen Catena, Spencer Susino, Liam Abujawdeh, Chris Harrigan, Evan Imbesi, Griffin Mertha, Nick Giannattasio, Matt Volk, Hayden Volk, Danny Moldauer, Justin Dibsie, Dan O'Connor, Neal Patharkar, Joey Lombardo, Anthony Lombardo, Johny Lombardo, John Prus, Steven Barsky and Derek Victor. Volunteer adults were Jean Marie Abujawdeh, Teri Lombardo, Scott Shpilberg, David Fitzgerald, Kayla Victor, Ron Victor and Karen Victor. Volunteer Fire Police were Kevin Ketelsen and Ed Piotrowski.

ANIMAL ADVOCACY End Dog Meat Trade Campaign
The temporary emergency shelter was set up in partnership
with St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J., and the remaining dogs have been transported nationwide to Emergency Placement Partner shelters, as well as to foster families in Ottawa, Canada. We are lucky to have had our friends at the Monmouth County SPCA, Animal Alliance, Cumberland County SPCA, Humane Society of Atlantic County, and St Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center accept dogs into their facility to adopt out.
It’s an emotional, crushing industry to contemplate. But we’re
starting the process of unwinding it, and the second chance given to these innocent creatures is a cause for celebration. For more Dogs at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J. that were saved from the South Korea dog meat trade.

Colts Neck NJROTC Community Golf Outing
PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN
NJ State Council Director | The Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States global affiliate,
Humane Society International (HSI), has had a major campaign to end the dog meat trade in South Korea, the only nation that eats dog meat and raises dogs on farms for the plate. There, in the run-up to the 2018 Winter Olympics, HSI has been converting dog farmers to humane alternatives, and they have been rescuing dogs and bringing them back to the United States for an extraordinary second chance, while ratcheting up public awareness everywhere to phase out this industry.
Recently, dogs raised for the butcher block in Wonju, South
Korea received a stay of execution and were flown into the United States. HSI worked with the farmer in February to permanently shut down his farm and rescue all 250 dogs on the property. The farm in Wonju is the fifth dog meat operation to date that has been closed down in South Korea. The dogs were flown to shelters and rescues that are part of the HSUS Emergency Placement Partner program, and have been placed for adoption. A sharper turnaround in their fortunes would be hard to find.
The dogs we have rescued so far belong to many different
breeds: there are Jindo mixes, Huskies, Golden Retrievers, Mastiff mixes, and some small breeds, like Beagles, Chihuahuas, and Maltese mixes. In the United States, we have seen long lines at some of our partner shelters as people have greeted the dogs with great enthusiasm and open arms. Many people have ended up adopting local dogs as well, showing us that the attention that these dogs bring to shelters lifts all boats, boosting the chances of other homeless animals. At one of our Emergency Placement Partners, all of the dogs at the shelter, including the Korean rescues, were adopted out within two weeks.
Even more important, we expect that these rescued Korean
dogs now leading happy lives in American homes will serve as ambassadors of hope for the hundreds of thousands of dogs living lives of terror in thousands of dog meat farms in South Korea.

Recent Rutgers Graduate & Holmdel Resident Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Share her College Success Strategies
Sarah Waxman of Holmdel, a recent graduate from Rutgers University, is on a mission to share her time management strategies and tools to help other college students get the most out of their college experiences. She believes she has an approach to help improve performance for college students and is launching a Kickstarter campaign to bring her ideas to market. While many students struggle to complete the typical 120 credits required for graduation, Sarah completed over 187 credits and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rutgers University in May of 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree while triple majoring in food science research, nutritional science, and biology – all in four years. During her four years at Rutgers, Sarah also completed independent food science research and presented her findings at five different national and international conferences. She was a full time Resident Assistant on Rutgers Cook Campus and was president of the undergraduate food science club. As Sarah noted, “I had a very busy schedule and for me, time management was critical. An academic planner was crucial to my survival in col-

lege. The only problem was - I could never find a planner that worked for me as a busy college student.” Over the 2014 summer break, Sarah decided to work with her dad, a retired software executive, to design a student focused planner. They realized most planners are primarily designed to schedule and keep track of meetings. But a typical college student is in class for only 15 hours a week. So Sarah and her dad focused their design on a student’s ever expanding list of things to do - long term semester projects, short term week over week assignments, and even activities not related to academics, but necessary when living on your own. Sarah commented that, “We tested our design ideas with other students for over two years. Our “aha” moment came when we realized that any to do item could also be treated as a scheduled event.” And so their resulting design focused on a simple way to effectively connect to do lists with each daily schedule. Sarah and her dad decided to name their product the METIS Planner, named after the Greek Goddess of wisdom, planning, advice, and deep thought. In order to gauge interest in launching the product, they are

utilizing a crowd funding model using Kickstarter. Kickstarter allows a product designer to present an idea and solicit supporters who agree to fund the project in return for some reward. Of course, in Sarah’s case, the main reward would be a printed and bound copy of the 2016-2017 METIS Planner and access to the full METIS system which includes downloads providing academic helpers, financial helpers, and goal trackers. Sarah even noted that she really wants to see students start to use the planner and as described on their Kickstarter page, she will provide a free digital print at home version to anyone who helps spread the word on social media. The METIS Planner campaign has until July 15, 2016 to meet its funding target of $1,500. As Sarah noted, “by staying organized and keeping ahead of all assignments, students will not only be able to succeed in the classroom, they will have the time to do what they want to do and have an amazing college experience.” You can learn more about the METIS Planner at www.metisplanner.com.

HOLMDEL’S AL ALOISI, A MODERN DAY RENAISSANCE MAN STO RY S U S A N M U R P H Y
Living each day to its fullest can be challenging, yet one Holmdel resident has found a way to do just that. Al Aloisi stays active and maintains a positive outlook on life. Over the years a variety of talents have emerged and Aloisi now engages each one on a professional level. An accomplished pianist, Aloisi has never taken formal piano lessons. “I started playing songs by ear at age five. I learned a chord method and theory and how to read music when my older sister was taking lessons.” He has played for the three-hour brunches regularly at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa in Long Branch. On June 8, 2016 he headlined a concert at the Middletown Arts Center. His selections include standards, classical, Broadway musicals, ethnic and holiday songs. “I play at St. Ann’s Church in Keansburg and have recorded four CD’s on the keyboard and on a concert grand.” Aloisi said he can perform at weddings and private parties where an elegant sound is desired for special occasions. While he prefers playing on an acoustical grand piano, which he can tune

attained a singles ranking of tenth in the Northeast (New Jersey, New York and Southern Connecticut) at age 65.” He explained that as a PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) certified tennis instructor, private tennis lessons are available for students for ages 10 and over. Special attention is given to students playing on a team or planning to play tennis in high school. Aloisi shared that through a Visiting Tennis Pro organization in work/vacation eight-day contract arrangements, free tennis lessons are given to the guests at all-inclusive resorts on many islands in the Caribbean. “For the price of the flights and incidental fees, the only requirement is to teach two hours a day, otherwise there is coverage for the room, food and top-tier beverages. I have done this over 30 times since 1999.” As for playing tennis year round, he shared, “People jog and walk their dogs in all weather. I play with friends, year round outside in all temperatures, as long as it is not wet or icy. Each season offers a special challenge. In the fall, we use a leaf blower and brooms to clear the courts. On some occasions, we have chipped ice away and shoveled snow!” Three years ago, Aloisi took a Modeling course at Barbizon School in Red Bank. “With that background, I have been in a pharmaceutical print ad, acted in a short video production for an upcoming singer/performer and played the part of a grandfather in an ‘I Play America’ internet promotion.” Over 25 years ago, Aloisi made a mid-life career change and started Alfred Aloisi Associates. He did so after having been in the Information Technology field for 35 years as a mainframe computer programmer, systems analyst and consultant. “As an independent broker, focus is in providing life insurance and annuities, which provide a guaranteed income for life, and individual and group health insurance. Specifically certified, for consumer protection, I help seniors with their Medicare supplemental health needs. Some plans have a zero premium.” After noting all of the things he is involved in, Aloisi was asked if there is a specific way he unwinds or relaxes. He responded, “Actually, by engaging in different vocations and avocations, even switching from one activity to another and playing in Texas Holdem tournaments in Atlantic City is relaxing!” Aloisi also shared three things that keep him focused and able to accomplish everything he does. “Caring about clients and prospects, and listening to their needs; scheduling so as not to cause time conflicts; and total concentration in the present activity.” These tips are a great help to living life to its fullest! Aloisi has been married to his devoted wife Nancy for 42 years, and they have five children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Al Aloisi is 81 years old – yes, that’s right! onmouth County native Michael V. Benedetto decided what he wanted for his future at a very early age. In fact, he was in third grade when he decided that attending law school was exactly what he needed to do. “I always wanted to go to law school but I never wanted to practice law. I wanted to be involved in real estate.” Fast forward to the present, and Benedetto has fulfilled his childhood dream. As Managing Partner of Ansell, Grimm & Aaron, PC, located in Ocean, New Jersey, Benedetto said he now has the opportunity to do both. “This gives me a different perspective than many real estate and banking attorneys. Over the years, I have focused more on the law, particularly since taking over as Managing Partner six years ago.” he explained. Benedetto’s primary duty as Managing Partner is to chair the Management Committee, which is the Steering Committee for the law firm. “We oversee the strategic growth of the firm. I also handle the recruitment, development and retention of legal and administrative professionals in accordance with the strategic plan. I work closely with the practice group leaders to help insure the quality of legal services we provide and development of protocols and procedures for the various offices, practice groups and the firm.” Aside from these duties, Benedetto continues to maintain an active caseload of corporate, commercial real estate, and banking matters. “I truly enjoy the practice of law and would never want to give this up,” he shared. When not working, Benedetto, a Rumson resident, enjoys spending time with friends and family. That time is usually focused around food and wine. “I have two amazing children. Olivia, who attends Rumson-Fair Haven High School and Michael (whom we call Buddy), attends For-

Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Honor Lillian Burry as a Distinguished Community Leader
The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore raised more than $175,000 dollars during its Annual Women of Distinction and Community Partners Gala in spring of 2016 at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale. The annual event honors the personal and professional achievements of outstanding local individuals and organizations. During the black-tie affair, the Girl Scouts honored an amazing group of individuals – among them was Monmouth County Freeholder and former Colts Neck Mayor Lillian Burry – who is dedicated to bettering our community and embodies the leadership qualities represented by the Girl Scout organization. Burry is now on the distinguished list of community leaders and activities honored by the Girl Scouts through this annual event over the past 32 years. Burry emphasized the Girl Scouts mission, “Confidence, Courage, Character. These are three things that start growing in the heart of every girl from the day she is born. But just like muscles, these qualities must be exercised regularly if they’re to become strong and certain. Fortunately, life affords us regular chances.” Burry went on to ask, “Do we have enough confidence in ourselves to consider a more challenging option? Do we have enough courage to make a decision based on merit, without fearing the disapproval of others if our choices fail to coincide with their desires? And is character strong enough to make the right decision and stand by it? The only way to find the answers to the questions is for each of us to make choices and stand by them through our lives.” For more information about the Girl Scouts and upcoming events, visit www.girlscoutsjs.org/

HOLMDEL FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION EXCELLENCE HELD
2ND ANNUAL 5K AND KIDS FUN RUN The weather forecast had predicted an activity of severe weather on June 5, 2016. Thankfully, Holmdel Township’s 2nd Annual 5K and Kid’s Fun Run went on as scheduled at the historic Bell Works site, but under overcast skies. The event was organized once again by The Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence (H.F.E.E) and by dedicated member Lauren Podesta. Ms. Podesta also took part in the 5K with H.F.E.E President and co-chair Brian Kennedy, who expressed his gratitude to Ms. Podesta for her hard work and attention to detail for the last event of the school year. Mr. Kennedy also thanked a number of sponsors and volunteers, including Brooke O’Brien and Doreen Demarco of Gloria Nilson Realtors, Mayor Eric Hinds and The Hinds-Pearly Group at Merrill Lynch, and Serini Family
STORY CARRIE FALCONE
Dental for being the foundation’s mile marker sponsor for the second straight year. He also thanked Bell Works, who graciously hosted the event for the second year in a row, and hoped that the company would continue to host another similar event in the near future. The Kid’s Run began first, and was followed by the 5K Race. Snacks, bagels, and drinks were provided for each race while a DJ played a variety of upbeat songs, including the theme song from Rocky. Coffee was also provided at the end of each race by Rook Coffee, and medals were given to runners under the age of 11, but it should be noted that over 300 runners of all ages took part in both events, and did an exceptional job. The Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence is a non-profit organization that
has worked tirelessly since 1996 to enhance the educational experience of every Holmdel student through a number of different programs and projects throughout the school district. Many of the programs include sports, academics, and the arts. The H.F.E.E also works to provide donations from the Holmdel community and corporate sponsors for vital materials and equipment used in those programs by holding fundraisers throughout the year. For example, many of the raised funds were used in the past to provide the Holmdel High School auditorium with a state of the art lighting and audio system, a weather station at W.R. Satz Middle School, and an upgraded library at Indian Hill School. This year, the 5K and Kids Fun Run will help raise enough money to supply Google Chromebooks for students at Indian Hill School, and will also continue to provide grants to Holmdel students and hard-working teachers. Mr. Kennedy also pointed out that in addition to raising $6,000 for the schools, events like the 5K are all about bringing the township community together as it goes through a major renaissance. To learn more about the H.F.E.E, visit www. hfee.org, where you can make a donation, learn about how you can serve as a trustee member or take part in a number of fundraisers in the near future.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
This is true in investing, business and in life - you cannot reach any height and overcome mediocrity without setting goals for yourself and your money. The underlying message here is that your future is up to YOU. We are blessed to have the fate of living in a country where you can make anything happen - and you truly have a CHOICE as to what direction your life takes. Not all choices are easy, and not all your choices will feel or be correct – but you make dozens every day, thousands in a lifetime. The decisions you make direct your life. Decisiveness is a critical skill to success. The blueprint for your decisions begins by identifying your specific goals. This will help you make those many decisions, and direct your choices in both a micro (daily) and macro sense. Without a clear set of goals, you will almost certainly not succeed (as it makes those many decisions harder). You cannot simply “put your nose to the grindstone” and rely on HARD WORK (as many people do) as your choices and decisions must be in concert and in the direction of your goals – much like the underlying moral and ethical life rules that you follow in your life. Financially, in business and in life, we must seek quality relationships that help define and support these goals (and helps us stay away from relationships that do not support
YOUR goals). It is important to contemplate, articulate and share what is important to you and your family and define your priorities, guidelines and perhaps even your dreams in order to set expectations and goals and be successful in your personal and business relationships.
TIP OF THE MONTH
No one likes to think about death, let alone plan for it. In many families, discussing one’s mortality is an extremely uncomfortable topic. By pre-planning your services, you relieve your family of having to make important financial decisions during a period of great grief. Your funeral prearrangement does not prevent you or surviving family members from making changes. You may upgrade, reduce, transfer or even cancel the prearrangement. Also, prearranging with a specific funeral home does not mean you ultimately have to use that funeral home’s services. All monies paid for prearranged services are required by law to be placed in interest bearing (currently 1.35% in NJ) trust in a FDIC insured account. In a guaranteed price agreement, the funeral home agrees to provide the services you have selected for the amount in the prepaid account, regardless of whether the value of those services exceeds the amount at the time of demise. By pre-planning, you relieve your family of having to make important and financial decisions during a period of great stress and grief. Speak to your family and your financial advisor about doing this and updating your will… you will be amazed about how it makes you feel!
QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“Own Your Outcome” – take personal responsibility for your situation. Don’t blame the government, the economy, the “rigged” system or bad luck. This is America, enjoy and use your freedom. Each month, I attempt to serve you what I think is worthwhile words – life, business and fiscally motivational mindshare. Throughout history, “The Table” symbolically represents a center of ideas, spirit, discussion and education. Our “VIP Table” setting will follow this theme for friends and readers. REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE …. KEEP IT SAFE and KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Holmdel Held 2nd Annual Daddy/Daughter Campout ON JUNE 17, 2016, Holmdel fathers and their daughters were roughing it at picturesque Bayonet Farm for a fun night under the stars. Open to girls in third through sixth grades and their dads – 40 girls and 31 dads signed up for the overnight event. Everyone enjoyed a barbecue, which was provided by Reds of Keyport, karaoke, s’mores over an open fire, sundaes, outdoors games, an evening movie and a late night hike! This event is the brainchild of Mayor Eric Hinds, and in its second year, more than doubled the attendees. “It was truly a community event that brought together fathers and their daughters, and it was perfect for Father’s Day weekend,” remarked Hinds.

Local Monmouth County Jeweler Committed to Protecting the Natural World Joseph V. Brando Talks Sustainability & Responsibility in Sourcing Diamonds STORY S U S A N M U R P H Y
JOSEPH V. BRANDO, owner of J. Vincent Jewelers in Colts Neck, has been designing and manufacturing fine artful jewelry pieces for many years. He loves what he does and will create a custom piece of jewelry that is unique and priceless. Brando believes that jewelry is personal and he prides himself on showcasing the finest pieces available. Among them is a display of magnificent Forevermark diamonds – rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and pendants. “Diamonds are the universal symbol of love, commitment and eternity. We use them to celebrate important happy occasions in our life,” said Brando. What better way to make a dream come true than with a Forevermark diamond? In order for these rare and beautiful diamonds to reach their final journey, they must meet strict criteria, which only less than 1% of the world’s diamonds meet. Forevermark is part of The De Beers Group of Companies, which places responsibility and sustainability at the heart of its business strategy. A core value of the Forevermark brand is responsible sourcing. J. Vincent Jewelers is committed to protecting the natural world and the preservation of wildlife that The De Beers Group of Companies follows. Brando explained, “We drill and dig deep below the Earth’s surface to uncover these natural and rare precious gems more than a billion years old. The greatest appreciation of Forevermark and the DeBeers Group of Companies is the proactive and positive contribution they make to improve the lives of the people in these mining communities and the tremendous effort to maintain and enhance the surrounding ecosystem especially

wildlife … with great detail given to the protection of a variety of endangered species.” Forevermark, as part of The De Beers Group of Companies, notes that sourcing diamonds responsibly means that, throughout their journey from rough to polished diamond, particular care has been taken to ensure responsible business practices, support the advancement of women, and protect the natural world, which is the ultimate source of diamonds. “Diamonds benchmark important moments in our lives, past and present. It’s good to know when gazing down upon your diamond, enjoying its fiery brilliance and spectacular array of spectral colors that it was crafted from the Earth with great respect to the people, wildlife and land involved in the process. Our current ads would like to express our respect to wildlife!” said Joseph V. Brando. He is planning a trip to a mine in the very near future and hopes to share his journey with our readers. J. The Mosaic Garden: Going Beyond the White, Picket Fence!
Maya Salerno at the event “Hogwarts in the Garden” on June 14, 2016, hosted by the Colts Neck Community Garden.
Master Gardener and Colts Neck Friends of the Library member Arnold Kleeberg visited Brandywine Senior Living Reflections at Colts Neck on June 18, 2016 for an outreach program. He is pictured with senior living residents Margaret Cochran, Carmen Fernandez and Wilma Reece.
STORY J A N E E N YO D A K I S
WHEN YOU THINK OF a garden, flowers and vegetables typically come to mind. But what if I told you there was a garden full of lovely people, poetry, flowers, vegetables, magic, and hope? The Colts Neck Community Garden is a mosaic of amazing activity with a garden at its core. In the small, quaint town of Colts Neck, sits a lovely little garden alive with beautiful flora and fauna. Its whimsical white trellis beckons one to enter. Once inside, you will be delighted by the variety of colors, textures and sounds along with a timeless statue of a young child engrossed in a favorite book at its center. This is the gardening home of several wonderful people and families who have chosen a plot in which to grow their favorite variety of plants. What was once an overgrown and unkempt space has now been transformed into a beautiful, thriving garden through the hard work, love, dedication and devotion of its gardeners. Going beyond the picket fence, the Colts Neck Community Garden hosted its first “Hogwarts in the Garden” event. On June 14, 2016, several young ladies ages 12-15 enjoyed a magical journey as they passed through Station 9 ¾ and into “Hogwarts in the Garden.” These ladies magically felt right at home with one another as they were sorted into their Hogwart houses, designed their very own wand, created house ties, explored Herbology and laughed so hard it hurt! These ladies are very excited for our next adventure into the magical realm of Hogwarts, which will be on July 12, 2016. All who register for this event are encouraged to attend in
full Potter costume. Beware, I do believe there might be a snitch about; a Golden one at that! On June 18, 2016, our very own master Gardener and member of The Colts Neck Friends of the Library Arnold Kleeburg and garden volunteer Emma Tamburello appeared at Brandywine Senior Living Reflections at Colts Neck. Their visit was part of our “Bringing the Garden to You” outreach program. The lovely residents of Brandywine thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands dirty while engaged in conversation with Ms. Tamburello and Mr. Kleeburg. Beautiful flowers and herbs were planted by the residents, which were then placed in their outdoor garden. Whether inside the walls of the white picket fence or beyond; our mission is to bring generations together to sow seeds and relationships. When you hear the laughter of little children, watch a joy-filled senior citizen, hear a 92-year-old women quote Shakespeare from memory at one our “Poetry in the Garden” gatherings or watch the joy on the face of local business owner when he is offering a donation for the garden, we know we have hit the mark. The word “We” encompasses so many wonderful people; our gardeners, The Friends of the Library, local business owners such as Delicious Orchards, Brock Farms of Colts Neck, The Home Depot of Marlboro and the community! Please join us and become part of the beautiful mosaic of happenings at the garden. Visit and “like” the Colts Neck Community garden on Facebook – “coltsneckcommunitygarden”.

In May 2015, a new roundabout at the intersection of Dutch Lane, Crine Road and Heulitt Road opened for public use with the purpose of slowing and controlling traffic. The roads, as they were, had come together at an awkward alignment, and over the years was the site of traffic accidents, some near-fatal. This past May, the focal point of that roundabout was erected as the finishing touch to this county project. Standing over six feet tall and over nine feet wide, a beautiful bronze horse is now the centerpiece to the roundabout. Lillian Burry, former Colts Neck mayor and Monmouth County Freeholder said, “It’s absolutely spectacular, it’s beyond my wildest dreams The horse was bought at cost from Brock Farms Home and Garden World for $13,500. Overall, the entire project cost was about $1.3 million. Ed Brock Jr., who lives near the roundabout, presented the statue at cost. The purpose of the horse is to alert drivers not to drive straight through the intersection, as well as represents a nod to the farming heritage in Colts Neck.

Village School PSA Hosted Annual Carnival
ON MAY 20, 2016, Holmdel’s Village School PSA hosted its annual carnival. This was the group’s biggest fundraising event of year. The children of Village School played carnival games, bounced around in bounce houses and participated in many fun-filled crafts. The PSA would like to thank all the par-
ents of Village School who helped make this year’s Carnival one of the best ever. Everything the PSA accomplishes for the Village School community is made possible by the commitment, enthusiasm, and passion of the parents, teachers, and administrators who dedicate their time to making our children’s educational expe-
rience the best it can possibly be. And because of this commitment, the PSA was able to donate $20,000 for Village School to purchase two charging carts and 50 Chromebooks. The Village School PSA is looking forward to another great school year for 2016-2017.

helped to make Village Idol a success. “We have raised approximately $8,000 to date for this cause. This event shows how special the teachers and staff at Village School truly are. I would also like to personally thank our Village Idol committee, Dr. Christine Riso, Mrs. Kara Renfroe, Mrs. Christine Barbara, and Mrs. Ann Marie Barry for all that they did to make this a success. Carol Stillwell Donates $3 Million to Oncology Infusion Center at Riverview Medical Center During Meridian Health’s Annual Meeting on June 8, 2016, John Lloyd, FACHE, president and CEO of Meridian Health announced that Mrs. Carol Stillwell of Colts Neck, president of Stillwell-Hansen, Inc., has generously pledged to donate $3 million to Riverview Medical Center’s 29,000 square foot BuildingHOPE oncology expansion project. The $3 million donation will specifically support the newly renovated infusion center, featuring 20 new infusion areas lined with floor to ceiling windows that provide patients with a tranquil view of the Navesink River. The infusion area will officially be named the Larkin-Stillwell-Hansen Infusion Center. “It is an honor to be able to give back to Riverview Medical Center, as I truly consider Riverview to be at the root of my journey with the Meridian family,” explained Mrs. Stillwell. “I have spent many days at Riverview with precious family and friends while they were undergoing various treatments and it was in some of those most difficult hours that I witnessed firsthand the finest care and compassion that the Riverview family had to offer. It is with great pride and in keeping with my heartfelt belief in giving back, that I support this major expansion to assist Riverview in continuing to provide for the needs of the future patients of our community.” Scheduled to open this year, Riverview Medical Center’s 29,000 square foot addition will include a combination of visual and technical upgrades in order to meet the clinical and emotional needs of patients. Oak Hill Academy’s Boat Building Club Launches Successful Maiden Voyage THE OAK HILL ACADEMY Boat Building Club presented its boat, the U.S.S. Oak Hill on May 21, 2016 at Deal Lake in Asbury Park! Each student who helped in the construction process was able to take a turn riding in the canoe. This opportunity was initiated through Project U.S.E. This Project is presented through a long-term, on-site relationship with participating schools and agencies. Students of middleor high-school age explore the maritime history of their region
and learn the science and art involved in boat building. The Program combines standard curricula, (math, physics, history, etc.) with rigorous and exciting experiential learning—a hallmark of Project U.S.E.’s programs. The Program culminates in the building and launching of wooden canoes or sailboats constructed by the students. The Oak Hill students in the after school club had a lot of fun cutting, drilling, sanding, and painting the boat. Their boat was special in many ways. It took a lot of teamwork, dedication, and creativity to build it. The team learned so many new things. Their favorite part of boat building was when they got to use the jigsaw and cut out all the pieces of the boat. They were guided by club moderator and art teacher, Miss Cassie DiMaggio. Boat Building was such a wonderful experience for all of them and they were excited to see their boat hit the water! Anchors away!
Saint Leo the Great Participates in Day of Service school, enjoying refreshments and being taken back to the 50’s era while watching the students perform the spring play, “The Nifty Fifties”. Each grade was involved in the preparations for SLG’s special guests - Preschool students made a welcome banner, Kindergarten students made centerpieces, while 1st grade students made posters and 2nd grade students created thank you cards. The 3rd and 4th graders decorated CD’s of 50’s music and prepared gift bags for the guests, and the 5th and 6th grade students served refreshments and escorted SLG’s visitors to their seats to see the 7th and 8th grade students perform. Seventh Graders Built Boat from Scratch; Launch Canoe in Deal Lake RANNEY SCHOOL SEVENTH GRADERS launched a 14-foot canoe in Deal Lake on May 21, 2016 after spending four months building it out of two sheets of marine plywood. Known as the “Boat Builders,” these students collaborated with Art Teacher Madeleine McCarthy and the nonprofit organization Project U.S.E. to create what they named “Boaty the Whale.” This year’s boat builders included: Tatiana Lanfranchi of Lincroft, John Leventhal of Colts Neck, Elena Raccuia of FarmingdaPHOTO: Ranney School Boat Builders le, John Tager-Geffner of Toms River and Hubert Wang of Holmdel. a nonprofit educational organization that provides experiential learning opportunities to more than 6,000 young people and adults each year. The students kept a weekly journal about their experience, including what it was like to use power tools, draw blueprints and see their vision come to life. “It is a great pleasure to be partnering with Ranney School on another Project U.S.E. boat-building initiative,” adds Brendan Meehan, the nonprofit’s program director. “Project U.S.E.’s model of experiential learning serves as a great platform for creativity and character building. It was great to see how the students react with each step in the process of construction.”

Run Successful Company Together Air Trampoline Sports Owners Talk Triumphs and Challenges of Family and Business FATHER/SON TEAM KEN AND JUSTIN STONE give an inside perspective on what it’s like to run a successful company in the family. The duo shares details on their successes, challenges and how they make it work. Air Trampoline Sports has locations in Ronkonkoma, NY and Aberdeen, NJ and is the only Trampoline Park in Long Island that is not a national franchise. Ken Stone is the owner of Air Trampoline Sports and his son, Justin Stone, is the General Manager of Air Trampoline Sports Ronkonkoma and Operator of Air Trampoline Sports Aberdeen. “There is no doubt that there is an overwhelming sense of pride working and succeeding with my dad. We have built this company without the help of a national franchise. Creating this company and maintaining a local feel in our two locations has happened partly because of our father-son relationship,” Justin noted. The Ronkonkoma location opened in September of 2013 and they added their Aberdeen location in March of 2015. “The thing that allows us to work better than most partners is trust. We’ve built an incomparable trust with each other on a personal level and it mapped over perfectly in the operations of our two park,” Justin comments. Ken added, “What works so well is the ability to know that not only does Justin have the same values that I have but I would never have to worry about any financial issues. We are both on the same page with great customer service and a positive attitude
