This SUMMER!
Create Your Own Private Oasis!
Fireworks and flags, BBQs, movies on the beach, frozen cocktails, and homemade lemonade on the boardwalk - it’s July at the Jersey Shore! Along with the sights and sounds of summer, the Fourth of July reminds us of the spirit of our great nation. It’s a time to pause and reflect on freedom, unity, and all it means to be Americans. This month at CM, we’re honoring that spirit and taking that intangible essence in some new directions. Our cover story, A Place Where Sand, Surf & Song Bring Healing, shares the story of two local women who have taken a spirit of compassion, coupled it with inspiration, and created a refuge for women battling cancer. Singer, songwriter Sarah McLachlan, a force for philanthropy for women and children, admired the women of Mary’s Place so much, she is lending her voice to support their mission. Our story, on page 33, explains how and why, and gives a glimpse into the heart of a world-renowned performer.

A new feature, called Beyond the Brand, similar to our Meet Your Neighbor features, will introduce you, our readers, to local companies with true entrepreneurial spirit. This month we caught up with the owners behind one of Monmouth County’s most decorated food trucks, Jonnie G’s. Our Meet Your Neighbor feature on Nancy Alario–Beliveau of the Holistic Healing Center, page 54, introduces you to a doctor of physical therapy who works with the whole person, including the spirit, to restore optimal health. A spirit of giving back permeated Eagle Oaks Country Club’s Honor Day. Our story and pictures on page 26, share how $275,000 was raised for local military families as they were provided a wonderful day of fun, education, and relaxation. As ever, the staff at CM thank our military and first responders for all they do. Finally we honor the spirit of bringing joy to others. The Monmouth County Film Festival takes place August 10th through 12th at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, but this month is packed with events leading up to the big weekend. We’re proud to sponsor the event and keep you up to date on all that’s happening on our social media sites, website, and on page 56. At CM, we strive to offer a mix of ultra local news combined with exciting features that bring the outside world into Monmouth County. We thank you for your loyalty and wish you a fun, safe, and spirited July! All my best,

Local Brokerage House Gives Back
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Holmdel/Colts Neck office recently partnered with It’s a Ruff Life Rescue, Pet ResQ Inc. and Home Free Animal Rescue to hold a pet adoption event and free paper shredding for the community. A steady stream of residents showed up throughout the day with files needed to be shredded – and some left with a furry new family member!
Jonathan Keates, Branch Vice President said, “I am pleased to say that thanks to our agents, our shredding event and pet adoption were a success! Area residents really look forward to this event, and find it to be a valuable opportunity to help protect their personal information. By tying it in with our pet adoption event, it provides an opportunity for everyone involved to help those in need of a home.”
Letter to the Editor Iam thrilled to be one of Holmdel’s six new County Committee Members. Enormous thanks to all who helped spread the word and voted Column 3 in the Republican Party. The 15 of us who ran in our individual districts really are an exceptional group of people who want forward motion and positive improvements for our town. Earlier this year, we had stepped forward to get involved and help change the status quo. County Committee is a position that most of us never knew existed in this town, and it’s time that this Committee better represents Holmdel in 2018. County Committee is the first elected position offered to an American citizen, and it holds a two-year term. 1 male and 1 female are elected from each district, and there are 10 districts in Holmdel. Responsibilities of a County Committee member include helping the Holmdel and Monmouth County Republican Committees secure election votes from the local township committee all the way up to a seat for the US Senate. In addition, we are to provide information to residents in our district on topics such as road issues or building plans that are under consideration. The County Committee also selects the best Township Committee candidate to be a representative of the Republican Party. As a lifelong Republican, I want to bring forth capable candidates for Township Committee who understand fiscal responsibilities, desire to maintain the beauty of Holmdel through much-needed improvements, and want to be on par with similar towns in our state. County Committee does not dictate nor vote on township policy or any issues, but they do vote as a group on who to put forward to Township Committee. It’s time that more residents are involved in this critical selection process.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com
The Holmdel County Committee has experienced little change in the 11 years I have lived here. Bringing ‘new blood’ into our town’s political process is vitally important to us. In fact, the Colts Neck County Committee also just welcomed many new members who were encouraged to become involved and endorsed by the established Republican Party. I look forward to building on this long overdue change in the near-future. We ran an honest campaign staying respectful of our neighbor opponents, did not spend a dime, and did not use any social media. Although we faced many obstacles, we still won six seats. We are thrilled with the great start of 6 new members out of the 15 that we ran in Column 3. None of these members were endorsed by the Republican Party, the Monmouth County Republican Party, Chairman Shaun Golden, or Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso who also sits on this County Committee. The other elected County Committee members are Rick Guarnaccia, also District 7, Mary Vassilakos and Matt Kline in District 6, and Joe Hernando and Valerie Marchiano in District 2. Finally, thanks must go to Debbie Brew and Eric Hinds for introducing helpful insight and providing valuable leadership. They have the absolute best interest of Holmdel and its residents at heart. Many thanks, Christine Schmitt, Holmdel Member of the County Committee, Monmouth County Republican Party The views and opinions expressed are solely those of the original authors.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com
The Colts Neck PBA hosted its fourth annual Steak and Smoke fundraiser on June 7, 2018 at Colts Neck Fire Company No. 1. The four hour event was held in order to help the PBA raise funds that are used to support their numerous community endeavors. The PBA sponsors in-town school scholarships, seven awards at present; youth sporting events within the Township; events within the local school district; and many other charities that Local 333 supports. This year, attendance topped 425 guests! The night included steak and cigars, adult and non-adult beverages and offered the opportunity for members of the Colts Neck community, the event sponsors and the PBA membership to get together and have fun while helping support the PBA fundraising efforts. The event committee included Rich Zarrillo, Morgan Savage, Todd Mayer and Brian Caswell. Along with the members of the committee, PBA President Rich Zarrillo noted, “We had the support of our entire local to help make the event a success.” He added, “We are very fortunate to have the support of the Colts Neck residents and local businesses as well as a number of outside supporters that help make the event the success that it is and was. We look forward to planning our next event.”

Dr. Salem Samra Travels to the Middle East in Humanitarian Mission
Performs 20 Surgeries in One Week
BY JEANNE WALL Publisher and Editor, TAPintoColtsNeck.net | TAPintoHolmdel.net
There are heroes among us.
Every day men and women do extraordinary things with grace, modesty and an inner strength that is a model for current and future generations. Worldwide crises, striking close to home, beckon action from those who possess the talent to help and the passion to make a difference. That is this story. For seven years we have heard and read about the decimation of the Syrian people. Nearly half a million lives lost since the civil war began in 2011. According to the UN High Commissioner, since the war began in 2011, over 5.6 million Syrians have fled the country as refugees, and 6.1 million are displaced internally. Imagine being removed suddenly from your home, maybe with a suitcase of belongings, maybe carrying your children on your back and not knowing how you are going to feed them. These are families who were once living very similar lives to those in the U.S. Many in Syria were living regular middle-class lives, educated, working, taking care of their families with high aspirations... We hear about the bloodshed, see it on the news, think about it, maybe we wish we could do something, maybe we stop and say a prayer. Maybe we think we are helpless beyond that. There is one person who takes it way beyond a thought and a prayer and that man of action is Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Salem ‘Sal’ Samra of Holmdel. Dr. Samra recently traveled to Amman, Jordan, with 50 volunteers from the U.S. and many other countries, as part of a humanitarian effort with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS). According to its website, “SAMS is a nonpolitical, nonprofit medical relief organization that is working on the front lines of crisis relief in Syria and neighboring countries to alleviate suffering and save lives. SAMS provides medical care and treatment to every patient in need who they come across. In 2016, SAMS provided medical service to over 3 million individuals.” The Samra family has a plastic surgery practice in Holmdel, Samra Plastic Surgery, founded in 1982, by Dr. Sal Samra’s father, Dr. Said Samra, who moved to the United States from Syria in the late 70’s. Samra Plastic Surgery specializes in cosmetic, reconstructive, and hand surgery. Dr. Sal Samra’s brother, Dr. Fares Samra, a resident in plastic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, also joined the surgical mission to Amman, Jordan in April. For Dr. Sal Samra, this was his third surgical mission to Amman. He first volunteered as a surgeon with SAMS, in 2013, and again in 2015, and most recently in early April of 2018. Dr. Sal Samra comments, “We were there with an amazing team of volunteers working together to perform 20 surgeries in one week. It is so rewarding for us to go to Syria and feel like we are making an impact. As a Syrian American watching the conflict you feel helpless. It’s a drop in the ocean but it is something, and something is better than nothing.”

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com
Dr. Salem Samra with Dr. Fares Samra holding a baby they performed surgery on to correct a cleft lip.
Dr. Sal Samra and his brother Dr. Fares Samra, along with other plastic surgeons from various countries who were part of the SAMS volunteer team performed 20 surgeries, including cleft lip corrections on babies, and on one teenager, who post-surgery is now able to eat and swallow his food properly, which is something previously he could never do. The more intense surgeries included reconstructive surgery for a woman who had a double mastectomy. There were significant surgeries performed on children who had suffered burns. Dr. Sal Samra comments, “When I first participated in the surgical mission in 2013 I was treating acute trauma, war injuries, children who had limbs blown off. There was much of the same in 2015, but in 2018 Jordan has closed its doors to more refugees, so acute traumas are not coming over the border to Jordan anymore, they are going to Turkey instead. So, this most recent mission was what I would call ‘refugee healthcare’. There was one little boy who had been badly burned on his arms, which made it difficult for him to use his arms normally. A few years ago, the burns I treated on children were from war injuries. This child’s burns came from a fire that was started in a refugee camp from a malfunctioning heater. We now have children growing up in refugee camps.” When asked if he would be returning to work again as a volunteer with SAMS, Dr. Sal Samra comments, “The devastation is so significant in Syria, I feel this SAMS mission is going to be a lifelong commitment for me. We have four plastic surgeons in our family, so I’m hoping every year a couple of us can go to help out.” For more information on the Syrian American Medical Society or to make a donation to SAMS, visit sams-usa.net.

The Holmdel FC Soccer Club (HFC) presented four scholarships to former players Abbey and Kailey Flynn, Gabrielle Cipriano, and Matt Lionette on June 12 - recognizing their accomplishments on and off the field. Abbey and Kailey Flynn played for eight years with one of HFC’s championship teams. They then played two years of varsity soccer at Holmdel High School where they are members of the National Honor Society, achieving Honor Roll with distinction every year of high school. Abbey and Kailey also volunteer extensively in the community. Their activities include serving as certified referees with HFC and volunteering time at countless soccer camps, clinics and tryouts. Next fall, Abbey will be attending the University of Texas at Austin and Kailey will be attending the University of California, Davis. Gabrielle Cipriano also played eight years of soccer on one of HFC’s championship teams. She has volunteered extensively for both HFC and for HYAA, including serving as a referee. She continued on to a successful high school career – receiving a varsity letter all four years and earning the team captaincy her junior and senior years. She was a key contributor of the Holmdel HS 2014 New Jersey State Championship team, and is also a National Honor Society member, achieving Honor Roll with distinction every year of high school. Her commitment to excellence and dedication on the field and in the classroom has led her to becoming a member of the Haverford College Women’s soccer team. Matt Lionette is the recipient of the Russell Drone scholarship. Matt played his entire youth career with HFC and has been a key component to the Holmdel HS boys soccer team’s success over the past four years, including a New Jersey State Championship. He was named first team all-state, all-shore and all-division, and also served as captain of the Holmdel HS varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. He has continuously given back to Holmdel FC and HYAA soccer over the years, serving as a referee and tryout volunteer. The Holmdel FC Soccer Club would like to congratulate all scholarship recipients and thank them for their dedication to the game as well as their commitment to helping make Holmdel FC/NJX a great place for youth players to enjoy the game. No Pet is Too Unusual for RBVH a mass removal on a goldfish, spay surgery in a gecko, bladder stone removal from a tortoise, CT scan on a rabbit, fracture repair surgery on a turkey, infectious disease testing on a honey bee hive, vaccination in a pot-bellied pig – there is never a dull moment in the Avian and Exotics Department at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital’s (RBVH) Tinton Falls location. We see a multitude of species from pet tarantulas to wallaby! On any given day, we may treat rabbits, parrots, chickens, ferrets, turtles, frogs, goldfish, rodents, and lizards. We are proud to be the only hospital in the area with two exotic animal specialists providing care seven days a week. While the term “avian and exotics” may suggest exotic pets only, our specialists are trained in the broader discipline of zoological medicine, which encompasses exotic pets, zoo collection animals, and wildlife. We strive to provide the highest level of care to exotic species by working collaboratively within the exotics department, as well as with other specialists in the hospital to elevate the options and care available to our patients. The Avian & Exotics Department also provides an internship program for graduate veterinarians starting their specialty training in exotic and zoological medicine. This supports the education mission of RBVH by creating future exotics specialists and assists in the advancement of the field of exotic and zoological medicine. Our specialists have over 20 years of combined experience with exotic pets, zoo animals, and wildlife. Dr. Brynn McCleery and Dr. Emi Knafo are both residency trained in exotic animal medicine, have additional training in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures, and are experienced with exotic animal surgery and anesthesia. Dr. McCleery is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice, and Dr. Knafo is a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine. Our team also consists of four extraordinarily talented and caring veterinary technicians and one veterinary assistant. The Avian & Exotics technicians and assistant are specially trained in the husbandry, handling, and medical care of exotic animals. At Red Bank Veterinary Hospital (Tinton Falls), we offer advanced diagnostics and treatments, primary care, grooming, and medical boarding for your exotic pet. Dr. McCleery and Dr. Knafo are also available to consult with private collections, zoos, aquaria, apiaries (honey bee yards and beekeepers), and aviaries. House calls are available on a case-by-case basis to help reduce the stress of travel and a hospital visit for your pet. House calls are also useful for koi ponds, large collections of animals, or large animals that may not easily travel to the hospital (kangaroo, exotic large cats). We recognize that the species is irrelevant to the bond that exists between you and your pet, and that’s why we strive to offer the highest level of care to all animals. Appointments are available Sunday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In addition, our emergency department is open 24 hours a day for exotics emergencies.
Fur, feathers, scales and wings— these are a few of our favorite things!
Best friends come in all shapes, sizes—and species. And RBVH’s Avian & Exotics Department is here to give each and every one of them the very best care. Emergency, General, Specialty Care— we’ve got your pet covered. Also treating pot-bellied pigs and honey bee colonies!

Monmouth Museum Hosted
Fashionable Luncheon By Susan Murphy Early in June, the Monmouth Museum welcomed 130 guests to a Fashionable Luncheon at the Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury. The fundraiser, which included a fashion show presented by Ann Marie Elia of 606, located in Fair Haven, was organized by The Friends of the Monmouth Museum in order to benefit the arts and education programs of the Museum. The Friends consist of a group of volunteers who support the Museum’s educational and exhibition offerings by organizing a fundraiser in the spring, summer and fall. The Friends have become life-long friends through the camaraderie they develop by planning fundraisers for the Museum and when hosting several of the opening receptions for the art exhibitions. The time, energy and enthusiasm the Friends contribute are greatly appreciated by the Board of Directors and Staff of the Museum. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the Museum, contact Helen Brown at 732.224.1993 or by email at info@monmouthmuseum.org.

Giving Hope to Heroes: Eagle Oaks Raises $275,000 Photo Credit: Tom Zapcic Photography Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club held its 10th Annual Honor Day Military Event in support of the courageous men and women who stand in defense of our country’s freedom. The event raised more than $275,000 for Hope For The Warriors, a national non-profit that provides a full cycle of care through its programs to restore self, family, and hope to post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen across the country. The day included helicopters landing on the driving range, followed by a special afternoon appearance by the West Point Parachute Team featuring four members jumping into cheering crowds. The event culminated with a dinner for all guests, with Lieutenant General Michael Flynn as keynote speaker. Lieutenant General Flynn is known for his key role in shaping US counterterrorism strategy and dismantling insurgent networks in Afghanistan and Iraq. Brian F. McCauley was honored as a distinguished guest for his decades of service to the United States including the United States Marine Corps, United States Secret Service, and the FBI. “We know that freedom is not free,” said Domenic Gatto, Chairman and President of Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club. “It is our privilege and honor to host a well-deserved day of fun and relaxation for these courageous and brave men and women who so valiantly and selflessly serve our country. Our members are proud and honored to share their club for the day.” 2018 Honor Day hosted more than 350 active duty service personnel representing all five branches of the military, and produced educational activities for more than 300 local school children. Military personnel were treated to a day of country club living, relaxing in a world class clubhouse and playing golf on a championship caliber golf course designed by Johnny Miller & Jack Nicklaus. Invited school children toured military displays highlighting various state of the art military technologies, interacting with military personnel, and learning about the practical application of the equipment and technologies. Eagle Oaks Honor Day, a New York Fleet Week tradition, is held annually on the Thursday before Memorial Day. Brookdale Foundation Scholarship Ball
Raised Over $186,000
Brookdale Foundation Scholarship Ball Co-Chairs Carol Stillwell, Candy LanganSattenspiel and Karen Escobedo.
Community members helped the Brookdale Community College Foundation raise a record amount for local students while honoring Warren Diamond and Maureen Lloyd at the Brookdale Foundation’s 2018 Scholarship Ball, held on May 18 at Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club in Farmingdale. The event raised over $173,000 with net proceeds of $145,000 for student scholarships and support services at Brookdale. Proceeds from the event will support the “Building Minds, Building Futures” Scholarship Fund, which will provide nearly $600,000 in scholarships and grants to more than 600 Brookdale students this academic year.
Latonya Brennan, Carl Guzzo, Jr., College President David Stout and Les Richens. Brennan, Guzzo and Richens are College Trustees.
Diamond, CEO of American Real Estate Management, lifelong Rumson resident, and avid supporter of local causes including Monmouth Medical Foundation, the Beauty Foundation for Cancer Care, K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, The ARC of Monmouth County, Hackensack Meridian Health, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Environmental Cleanup, the American Cancer Society, the Where Angels Play Foundation, the Women’s Philanthropic Fund, the Visiting Nurses Association, and the Brookdale Community College Foundation, said “education is not such a good deal if we only teach the students to make a living; teach our children how to make a life,” before noting, “it is incredible, the array of classes that Brookdale offers.”
Honorees Maureen Lloyd and Warren Diamond
Lloyd has served as President of the Monmouth County Park Charity Fund (MPCF) -- which has distributed over $9,400,000 to nonprofit agencies and healthcare facilities that serve Monmouth County residents, including the Brookdale Foundation -- for the last nine years, co-chair of the Meridian Health Gala, the Rumson Country Day Gala, and currently serves as Chair of the MPCF Kentucky Derby Celebration. Lloyd, who has been honored by Pacific Opera, The ARC of Monmouth County, The Jersey Shore Council of the Girls Scouts, and The Tigger House Foundation for her philanthropic work, began her speech by thanking the crowd, “not for me, but for all of you supporting Brookdale.” She said that being honored is not as important as the actual meaning of the work being done. “Brookdale is not only a stepping stone but a seamless stepping stone” for students to continue learning, and praised the college for transfer opportunities. “I commend Brookdale for being able to do everything they do.”
Tim Zeiss, Executive Director Foundation & Alumni Affairs
Since 2001, the Brookdale Foundation has provided over $5 million in scholarships and grants to nearly 7,000 students. For more information on the foundation and its scholarship programs, visit brookdalecc.edu/foundation.

Holmdel’s 2018 Special Olympics Torch Run Group
Local Law Enforcement Passes the Torch for Special Olympics BY JEANNE WALL PUBLISHER AND EDITOR, TAPINTO HOLMDEL & COLTS NECK TAPINTOCOLTSNECK.NET | TAPINTOHOLMDEL.NET
Local law enforcement officers swapped their uniforms for running gear to participate in the Annual Torch Run for Special Olympics on June 8. Multiple police departments throughout Monmouth County and the rest of New Jersey carried a torch called the “Flame of Hope” throughout the state as a welcome for the Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games Opening Ceremony. After traveling more than 750 miles statewide, the flame arrived to light the cauldron and signal the official start of the
Summer Games - the largest competition event of the year. The runners headed along Route 35 North in Middletown towards Holmdel with members of law enforcement carrying the torch. Middletown arrived at the municipal border near Target and successfully passed the torch to Holmdel. Holmdel Police, Fire and First Aid staged to support and help pass the torch. Local businesses, such as Exxon, Dunkin Donuts, and Title Boxing’s Holmdel location, were present alongside law enforcement and
residents to express enthusiasm and support. The torch continued its journey through Holmdel where it was then passed to Hazlet law enforcement. With the torch leading the way, the Special Olympics and the significance it brings to so many were in first place along the entire route. Learn more about the Torch Run at sonj. org/partners/law-enforcement-torch-run/ special-events/annual-torch-run/.

A PLACE WHERE
Sand, Surf & Song BRING HEALING BY CATHY PADILL A
Sarah McLachlan will host sold-out benefit concert for Mary's Place in Asbury Park.
The ocean
has long inspired songs and verse of the soothing power of the sand and salty air. Two local women went beyond the words and found a way to use the healing nature of the surf to help other women in need of peace. Nestled on the quiet beach of Ocean Grove, Mary’s Place by the Sea is assisting women from all over the country who are receiving treatment for cancer. In the three-story Victorian home, visitors find rest and a place to regroup and regain strength. CONTINUED ON NEX T PAGE
On July 28, sand and surf will once again inspire song as Sarah McLachlan, the three-time Grammywinning singer and songwriter, brings her emotional ballads and hauntingly beautiful voice to Monmouth County to support and encourage the nonprofit. In partnership with Grammy-winner Patty Griffin, the two will give a sold-out benefit concert at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. The Canadian singer, who founded the Lilith Fair tour and has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, is no stranger to the pain cancer can cause. “I’ve actually lost my mom, my dad, and my brother to cancer, so I know the pain of watching someone you care about become so sick and the relentlessness of it all,” shared McLachlan. “Caregivers can often feel helpless, and any respite is wonderful. Mary’s Place offers that, a calm moment in a very tough struggle, and I applaud the work they are doing.” When the idea for Mary’s Place came to Michele Gannon, she and co-founder Maria McKeon shared their vision by reaching out to oncology offices and groups supporting women with cancer. The response was immediate. The need for a place for women with cancer to go and be surrounded by love and understanding was real; a place where cancer was a common denominator, but not the defining attribute; a place where taking a deep breath, sharing challenges and experiences, and recognizing the needs of the whole person was the focal point. “We are thrilled to have these two incredibly talented, Grammy Award winning artists dedicate their time and musical talents to benefit women with cancer,” said Gannon, President and Co-Founder. “This concert represents exactly what Mary’s Place by the Sea is all about: women helping women in their time of profound need.” In June of 2016, Mary’s Place opened the doors to a new, custom-built, state-of-the-art home just a block from the Ocean on Main Avenue in Ocean Grove. Since its founding, Mary’s Place has welcomed more than 8,000 women, and continues to be a safe haven for women with cancer. Mary’s Place provides services that complement medical treatment, including oncology massages, nutrition education, individual counseling, expressive writing, reflexology, Reiki, guided meditation, prayer, and yoga at no cost to the guests. “A friend is involved with Mary’s Place and asked me if I might come and help out, and it was an easy yes after hearing about their services,” says McLachlan. “I love New Jersey, having spent some time there a few years back at the beach. The people are great, the water is warm, and there is surf!” ARROW-ALT-CIRCLE-RIGHT For more information, or to donate your time or treasure, visit marysplacebythesea.org. THE STRENGTH OF LILITH AND MARY
Women Inspiring Women In 1996, when Sarah McLachlan was organizing her festival of all-female artists, she needed a name. A friend told her the story from Hebrew mythology of Adam’s first wife before Eve. Her name was Lilith. Known as a cautionary tale because she had insisted on equality and then left the Garden, McLachlan found Lilith to be the perfect protagonist. Lilith Fair was born. In 2009, when co-founders Michele Gannon and Maria McKeon first started their non-profit, they rented two rooms at a bed and breakfast in Ocean Grove. The idea for the retreat had come to Gannon one night after she had been sick in bed with the flu. A mother of three, she experienced how challenging it was on the household for the ‘mom’ to be sick. She realized how much harder that struggle must be for women with an on-going illness like cancer. When Gannon shared her idea with her friend Maria McKeon, she found not only a sympathetic ear but a willing partner. Being prayerful women, Gannon and McKeon welcomed their first guests by asking themselves what Mary, the Mother of Jesus, would do. They looked to Mary as a symbol of faith, hope, kindness, humility, and most of all unconditional love. These were the virtues that would shape their organization. Mary’s Place by the Sea was born.
In the 1990s women musicians found it challenging to get air time on the radio, and touring slots were nearly impossible to find. Young female music stars like Jewel, Tracy Chapman, Sarah McLachlan, and Sheryl Crow had to fight for their spots, as unspoken quotas would not allow too many female singers in a row. In 1996, McLachlan organized a mini festival that would ultimately turn into Lilith Fair, the exclusively female festival of singers that would revolutionize music for female artists and raise millions of dollars for charity. For every ticket sold, $1 was donated to a women’s shelter. McLachlan was 28 at the time. McLachlan is a celebrated singer and songwriter with more than 40 million albums sold worldwide. She has received three Grammy Awards and twelve Juno Awards over her career and was recently inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. McLachlan is known for her philanthropic efforts and has raised millions of dollars for women’s charities. In 2002 she opened The Sarah McLachlan School of Music, providing top quality music instruction to at-risk and underserved children at no cost. When announcing the benefit concert, McLachlan said of Mary’s Place by the Sea, “It’s a wonderful place for women to go when they’re healing from cancer. I hope you can join us!” For more on McLachlan, visit SarahMcLachlan.com

NESTING NESTING IS A CONCEPT that has become popular in the age of collaborative approaches to divorce cases. Divorcing parties agree that the children will remain in the marital residence and the parents will rotate in (for their parenting time) and out (for the other party’s parenting time). This is seen as a way to give stability to the children during a period of upheaval in the family. Although the parents are separating and the family, as the child knows it, is falling apart, nesting is viewed by some as softening the blow for children by providing them with the stability of the house they know, even as the family they know undergoes a sea change. Although the supposed benefits of nesting
are highly questionable, even if nesting does provide some benefits, its costs (both monetary and emotional) are great and almost always outweigh its benefits. First, it requires both parents to have somewhere else to live when not exercising parenting time in the marital home. This means that the already financially stretched family budget will somehow have to support two additional residences. This is an extremely high price to pay. And even in those cases in which the parents are cooperative enough to share one additional residence for non-parenting time days, thereby reducing the number of households to support, both parties sacrifice privacy.

Neither can call either place home because both are being shared with an estranged spouse. Instead of severing personal ties and moving on with life after a failed marriage, nesting actually requires divorcing parents to create new entanglements by sharing two residences. And what about the mixed signals this sends to children? They no longer see their parents together but the family home is still occupied by them on a rotating basis. Instead of getting used to the idea that their parents are not getting back together by having two separate residences (even if one happens to be the marital home), the false hope, that the parents may reconcile and the family will be

reconstituted in its former form, is perpetuated. In highly acrimonious cases in which there is a significant economic disparity between the parties, nesting can create a tactical advantage for the economically advantaged spouse. This may unfairly cause the disadvantaged spouse to make economic (or other) concessions just to end the misery. An economically advantaged spouse can often afford a much larger, better appointed, and better located alternate residence, thereby, creating a higher degree of comfort on non-parenting days than the disadvantaged spouse can afford. The ages of the children and their psychological adjustment to the changes in the family also have to be considered in deciding whether nesting should be tried. Although their psychological well-being must be considered, a child’s penchant for manipulation may also be a factor. Nesting offers a child a significant measure of control that he may be ill-equipped to exercise. Perhaps the better plan for a child is to get him acclimated to the changing family dynamic by introducing him to the idea that his parents will live apart permanently and that he will maintain his strong bond with both in their respective residences. This helps him cope with the reality of his future. Isn’t this actually what’s best for him?

Colts Neck Library ‘Friends’ Fourth Grade Spelling Bee Tradition Continues Last month twenty-one enthusiastic, supportive and confident fourth grade students arrived at the Colts Neck Library to take part in the 15th Annual Fourth Grade Spelling Bee. Every speller received a ribbon and the final four were each rewarded with a trophy. The top three spellers also received a cash prize of $100, $75 and $50 respectively. Matthew Anderson won first place, second place was awarded to Ricky Ecklord, the third place prize went to Ricky Schibell, and Samantha Farrugia took home honorable mention. Every speller is guaranteed to succeed in the first round. Each contestant spells his or her first name and, even in the rare case where the student stumbles from first round jitters, there is no elimination. This allows the students to practice using the microphone and to alleviate anxiety. Ms. Nancy Plumfield, the science teacher at Conover Elementary School, once again read the words and sentences to the spellers, and “science” was the deciding word. The Friends of the Library Board was on hand to run the event with Vice President LiliAnn Paras chairing and President Michele Battista taking photographs and keeping the line moving. Colts Neck Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization that supports the Library and runs several programs for the community, including the Art and Photography Show, Book Sale, Spelling Bee, Garden, Book Club, and more. New members are always welcome. Interested potential new members can leave their contact information at the front desk of the Colts Neck Library.

Ten Years of Championship Sailing at CBA On June 2, Christian Brothers Academy celebrated 10 years of sailing as a school sport with an Anniversary Regatta at Toms River Yacht Club. Gathered there, where we use the Ocean County College fleet of 420 sailboats for our practices and regattas, were a mix of passionate alumni, current and past parents, and our current varsity sailors and coaching staff including my father, Jody Lutz, who has coached the team all ten years. Watching the events of the day, I couldn’t help but smile as I thought about what we have built over the past decade. Ten years ago I was a student at Christian Brothers Academy with a passion for the sport of sailing. It became my singular mission to connect the two and add sailing to the list of outstanding athletics at CBA. For several months I sat in CBA administrators’ offices trying to convince them a sailing team would be a slam dunk, using a basketball reference since the Academy had a championship hoops
48
program. Eventually, then-associate principal Ross Fales conceded to my persistence and gave us temporary club-team status. We impressed the Academy administration enough to be promoted to a varsity sport, and although it was scheduled for the year after I graduated, I achieved my goal and the program has prospered. High school sailing throughout the state has taken off in the last 10 years, with CBA being at the forefront of the sport’s development at the scholastic level. When the CBA administration gave the program the green light, there were fewer than eight other high schools with formalized teams. Today, there are upwards of 26 schools registered with the New Jersey Interscholastic Sailing Association (NJISA), which was incorporated in 2010 to govern high school sailing in New Jersey. CBA has cemented ourselves as the premier program in the state over the past decade.

Our team has won two state championships, multiple NJISA league titles, qualified for three Singlehanded National Championships, and qualified for the overall United States High School National Championship in 2017. We’ve also sailed in the most Mid-Atlantic District Championships of any New Jersey school since 2008 and have not been ranked outside of the state’s top-three in the past six years. We have had alumni go on to sail at some of the best sailing colleges in the nation. Our senior captain this school year, Michael Ehnot ’18, summed it up best at our varsity awards convocation at the end of May. He noted how, setting aside any championships won, CBA Sailing is a program with one-ofa-kind character. And that was never more evident than at our anniversary event. Our current team is very close, our alumni remain good friends, and our parents are super supportive. That is the definition of a successful program.

Yoga...with Goats! You’ve most likely seen the videos or pictures on one of your social media accounts. Take a room full of people doing yoga and add…goats. It’s a new trend that started two years ago when a recently divorced woman named Lainey Morse discovered the goats on her Oregon farm helped her fight depression. She started having “Goat Happy Hour” each day and inviting friends to join. Her friends found the soft, gentle animals comforting, and before long a friend who is also a yoga instructor had a great idea. Morse’s first year in the Goat Yoga business brought in more than $160,000. Wildly popular, local organizations such as OASIS tlc are now having Yoga with Goats bring in money to support their causes. OASIS tlc is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote inclusion and acceptance of autistic individuals into their local communities. By establishing environmentally exemplary farm centers, they provide meaningful work, peaceful and healthy residences, and community interaction. Interested in joining the fun while helping a great cause? Both Hot and Soul Yoga and Synergy Hot Yoga Studios provide classes on the Red Bank farm a couple days a week for $30 per person plus a small registration fee that goes directly to OASIS tlc. Reservations are required, contact LaurieMOASIS@gmail.com for more information or visit www.oasistlc.org. Upcoming Dates: 7/7, 7/24, 8/14, 8/25, 9/11, 9/22 & 10/6.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR
Dr. Nancy Alario-Beliveau, PT, DPT Dr. Nancy Alario-Beliveau resides in Holmdel with her husband Ryan, and son, Michael (“Mikey”). She opened the Holistic Healing Center (HHC) in Colts Neck in 2016. The HHC is moving to its new location in the Colts Neck Shopping Center at 420 Route 34. CM learned more about the popular HHC and its dynamic leader.
How did you become involved with Physical Therapy (PT)? I have always been intrigued by the human body and passionate about maximizing one’s health. I have been in the field of PT since 2005. I graduated from Villanova and received a doctorate of physical therapy in 2010 from Thomas Jefferson University. What is a "Holistic" approach? Holistic medicine refers to treating the whole person, mind, body, and spirit and not just the physical health aspect. It goes beyond zoning in on a compartmentalized "problem". How did you shape your HHC practice? I envisioned HHC when I was 14 years old and noticed the evolution of the grocery store, where everything you needed for your home and life was in one store. I created a similar movement in healthcare where all needs are met in one place. I complement traditional PT with acupuncture, chiropractic medicine, therapeutic massage, and cupping all at the HHC facility. Patients tell me they no longer feel like a "full-time patient" having to find time to go to separate offices every single week. I also selected the best clinicians and we are proud not only of our skills, but of the family-like atmosphere.
54
How is HHC different from other clinical providers? I love helping patients from infants to the elderly. Our youngest patient to date was 2 weeks old, and our oldest 101. My team and I take very seriously our mission to use a multidisciplinary approach and to listen and adapt to each patient’s unique needs. For example, our massages include manual lymphatic drainage, sports and deep-tissue massage, and medical massage. I offer holistic health nutritional coaching that focuses on whole-food, plant-based interventions. I also have Thermographic Diagnostic Imaging which is a totally safe, non– radiologic, non–invasive, painless breast health test. What is one of your most notable cases? One of my favorite patients has a complex history and she is very dear to me. She is a middle-aged grandma from Cuba and told us about all of her ailments which included severe allergies, fibromyalgia, widespread rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, obesity, and the list goes on... We brought her into HHC and started with a plant-based, elimination food program, therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, adjustments of her spine, and in one month her physician cut her medications in half, she lost 15 pounds, and her spirits were lifted. She came here from another country and
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
over the years of adopting a Standard American Diet (SAD) and unfortunate family dynamics, she developed several health issues. She now stands 50 pounds lighter, is on 1-2 medications, and is in good spirits on a regular basis. She still comes to our HHC family and we continue helping her to “Feel Whole Again".* What do you love about being in practice? I love being able to do what I'm passionate about, which is functional medicine, which means we get to the root of a problem instead of masking the symptoms. I like helping a variety of people~ an injured athlete who needs meditation guidance for better performance for his race, or a stressed CEO who needs help to decrease neck pain and tension, My team and I love helping everyone to perform at optimal functioning. What’s All the Buzz About Liposuction? According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), liposuction was the #1 surgical procedure in 2016 with 414,335 procedures performed. It was also the most popular surgical procedure among both women and men. So, why are so many men and women getting liposuction? Liposuction is fat removal surgery. In fact, it’s the most common cosmetic surgical procedure among men and women ages 3564 and it’s one of the best procedures to refine body shape. Sometimes, even at your goal weight, you may have bulges in places you’re not fond of. Those fat pockets can make you look out of proportion and your clothes not fit well. If these lumps and bumps bother you, liposuction may be right for you. Liposuction can better balance out these problem areas. In addition to getting tailored results, lipo covers the big concerns people have when it comes to cosmetic plastic surgery. It’s relatively quick, less invasive for fast recovery and more affordable. The national average physician’s surgical fee for liposuction is $3,347. Facility fees, anesthesia and other surgical costs are added to this figure. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, meaning, you’ll go home the same day. It can be safely performed using local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A thin tube will be inserted through a small incision and fat will be suctioned out. The procedure takes between 45 minutes to two hours depending upon the amount of areas being treated. Based upon the type of work you do, your return to work can be as soon as a few days after surgery. You’ll most likely only need over-the-counter pain tablets to manage post-operative soreness. You’ll wear a compression garment for a while to minimize swelling and encourage skin contracture. Scars should fade to barely visible. It’s typically a "one and done" cosmetic surgery. Lipo removes fat cells from the body. Fat cells do not multiply so they won’t grow back. The remaining fat cells and fat in other locations can still get bigger or smaller based on diet. So, you’ll want to maintain eating habits based on your desired weight and look. When choosing a doctor to perform liposuction on you, make sure you are talking with board-certified plastic surgeons. Review their before and after photos to see that their aesthetic style appeals to you. You’ll want to choose a physician who regularly perform liposuction so they are familiar with the tools and how to use them. For more information, contact Samra Plastic Surgery at 732.739.2100 or visit samraplasticsurgery.com.

Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Recognize Holmdel Girls with Girl Scout Gold Award
T
he Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore honored 26 exceptional young women with the Girl Scout Gold Award on June 12. Four of the honorees, Emily Chang, Julia Hamwi, Anika Patel, and Ashley Yu are from Holmdel. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive and the most difficult award to earn in all scouting. For more than a century, award recipients have reported significantly higher levels of general success and achievement than their peers. The Girl Scout Gold Award, gives girls in 9th through 12th grades an opportunity to engage in community leadership at the highest levels while addressing issues they are passionate about. The honor is earned by less than six percent of Girl Scouts annually. It requires girls to demonstrate their leadership skills by tackling a community or global issue in a tangible way with a minimum of 80 hours of community service required for each project. Many universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award Girl Scouts and girls who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank in recognition of their achievements.
Emily Chang Holmdel Skating Promotes Fitness and Good Health Obesity is a growing health concern that has become a global pandemic. To address this issue, Emily organized a National Skating Month event at the Howell Ice Arena where she offered free half-hour lessons and recruited skaters to participate in an exhibition. Emily wanted to use her knowledge of fitness from her experience as a figure skater to raise awareness for obesity, promote skating, and increase interest in the sport as an aerobic workout that improves balance and flexibility. After the event, she scheduled a public skate session for families to enjoy a fun activity. The event enabled Emily to promote her topic and spread awareness to her community.
Anika Patel Holmdel A Day of Beauty
Anika believes people can accomplish more when they look and feel their best. This is why she hosted a “Day of Beauty” event that provided nail, hair, and makeup services for students with disabilities. Anika and her peers hosted the event to help others feel beautiful and more confident and to promote better mental health. Due to the everyday struggles faced, these students don’t always have the opportunity to be pampered. This can lead to low self-esteem and worsening of mental health. As a result of the event, students enjoyed a makeover, and Anika was able to raise greater awareness for self-care and mental well-being.

On May 20, 2018, the sun was shining as over 150 guests gathered at Rumson Country Club to celebrate the 7th Annual ‘Beacon of Hope’ fundraising event benefitting Shore House. Shore House was recently recognized as New Jersey’s first Accredited Clubhouse, joining the ranks of over 320 Accredited Clubhouses worldwide providing resources and support for those diagnosed with chronic mental illness
Among the guests was Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling, who re-affirmed his commitment
and support of Shore House and presented Resolutions recognizing event honorees Monmouth University, CPC Behavioral Healthcare, as well as the Shore House Founding Board Members who have worked so hard to get Shore House to this important milestone. Members of the Clubhouse mingled with supporters as Dr. Ralph Aquila, Medical Director at Fountain House in New York and one of the world’s leading community psychiatrists and mental health advocates, spoke about the significance of Shore House attaining accreditation status as the only Clubhouse serving the entire state of New Jersey, and the benefits this will have for Clubhouse members, and the whole community.
Shore House is so grateful for the generous support of all those who attended, sponsored
and contributed to make this important annual fundraiser such a resounding success. The event raised over $65,000, it was a wonderful celebration of a milestone achievement, and most importantly, an effective way to raise awareness for the important work of Shore House in empowering and enabling Clubhouse Members living with mental illness to see their strengths past their diagnoses. For general information and information about joining or volunteering at Shore House, Dr. Ralph Aquila and Cathy Smith

732.431.2299 The Woman’s Club of Colts Neck is pleased to announce member Jennifer Beck received the New Jersey Women of Achievement Award during the 124th Convention of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City this past May. The Colts Neck Club nominated Beck for her contributions to survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, as well as the protection of individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness. A delegation of officers, both past and present, were delighted to watch their own nominee and member receive her award. Created in 1981, the New Jersey Women of Achievement Award is a partnership between the Federation and Douglas College to acknowledge the extraordinary accomplishments of New Jersey women. The award recognizes the impact these women have made on the lifestyle of our state. Since its inception, more than 150 New Jersey women have received this award for their tremendous contribution to their communities. Contributions include both professional activities and volunteer work. The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Club is the largest volunteer women's service organization in the state and a member of the GFWC. The organization provides opportunities for education, leadership training, and community service through its local clubs, while enabling members to make a difference in the lives of others, one project at a time. The Woman’s Club of Colts Neck is an extremely active group which contributes annually to the community. Activities like the Veteran’s Day Luncheon, perpetual care to the 9/11 memorial, and planting pinwheels at the library are just a few causes dear to this group. Any woman seeking more information about the club or membership should visit womansclubofcoltsn. wixsite.com/mysite, visit its page on Facebook, or email womansclubcoltsneck@yahoo.com.
