Trotting in Tutus for a Cause
5K Run/Walk turns footsteps into dollars for pediatric brain tumor research On June 12, just shy of 800 caring people laced up their sneakers, put on their tutus, and hit the pavement to raise money for children battling brain tumors. As tutu-donning men, women, and children of all ages gathered at the starting line, a sense of excitement and purpose could be felt in the air. The Infinite Love for Kids Fighting Cancer 7th annual Tutu Trot 5K Run/Walk raised money for the Children’s Brain Tumor Network, a global research effort based at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. It was a day filled with community, purpose, and a lot of love. The first Tutu Trot, held in Trumbull, CT in 2016, was inspired by kindergartener and cancer fighter Mia McCaffrey. Sadly, brave and charismatic Mia passed away at age 6, one year after her diagnosis. The race has continued on in her memory, an impactful annual tradition that brings the community together to drive awareness and raise money for critically-needed research. The success of those Tutu Trots led the Infinite Love team to expand the race to add a virtual option and a simultaneous race in a second location this year at Middletown High School South. “Throughout the last couple of years, we’ve been unable to gather with each other,” said Middletown Mayor Tony Perry. “And that makes it hard to raise money. But the mission of Infinite Love did not stop through that time. Today we’re standing together to start that fight back up, to raise that money back up, and to help each and every family

that gets the worst news possible, to give them that hope, to give them that love, and to make sure they know they are not alone in that fight. Today you are running for that cause. Today you are showing a unity that is unparalleled; today we are fighting it together, and today we will run for it together.” Although the Tutu Trot is new to Middletown, Infinite Love for Kids Fighting Cancer is not. The nonprofit was founded by Middletown resident Andrea Verdone Gorsegner after her daughter Natalie was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2; she is now a 12-year-old survivor. The foundation runs multiple fundraisers each year and all proceeds go directly to funding new pediatric cancer research or assisting families with a childhood cancer fighter. Since 2013, the small but mighty foundation, powered entirely by volunteers, has helped hundreds of families and given over $1.6 million to cancer researchers. Infinite Love is grateful for the many sponsors and donated services provided by local organizations. Volunteers from the Middletown Auxiliary Police helped with traffic and safety and the Middletown Fire Police freely lent equipment for the day to mark the course. The Middletown Board of Education provided the venue at no cost and Lincroft First Aid stayed at the race the whole time in case of an emergency. All donated time and goods meant money saved that could then go to the Children’s Brain Tumor Network based at CHOP.

Susan deBrigard has more than thirty years of experience educating children and advocating for children and families. Now, children ages two and a half through five years old will be the beneficiaries of Susan’s expertise in Early Childhood Education as she fills her new position as Director of Preschool Education and Ministry at St. Catharine Church in Holmdel. "It is an exciting time to be the Director of the well-loved St. Catharine Preschool and to reopen the school after it closed due to COVID. The school’s developmental philosophy and Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum is an important foundation for success in academics, self-confidence, and a lifelong love of school,” said Susan. The kind, experienced staff is dedicated to meeting the individual needs of each child in the areas of religious, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development in a loving and safe environment.
Age-appropriate activities in a multi-sensory rich environment encompass academic areas including language arts, mathematics, music, science, and social studies. The children also learn about faith, kindness and respect. “We want each child to develop a lifetime love for learning, good social skills, and a positive self-image,” Susan shared.
Susan holds an undergraduate degree and a NJ Director’s Certificate in Early Childhood Education and a master’s degree in Early Childhood Curriculum and Instruction. She spent almost twenty years in a director’s position at other Church-based preschools. Susan's other career highlights include Senior Development Specialist for the Child Welfare League of America located in Washington, D.C.; Director of Training for Foster and Adoptive Family Services; Court Appointed Special Advocate for children; preschool classroom teacher; and a Stephen Minister.

Drawing a sell-out crowd for the second consecutive year, The Jersey Shore Partnership Foundation hosted its 25th Annual Summer Celebration on June 13 at Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook to raise money for shore protection. “We’re so thrilled this event grows bigger and stronger each year, and so does the need to protect our beautiful beaches and coastal communities,” said Jersey Shore Partnership Board Chairman John Gagliano. “It’s gratifying to see so many friends, community leaders, and businesses from up and down the state come together every year to raise money for shore protection.” The highlight of the evening was an awards program honoring outstanding individuals/organizations that support the Partnership’s mission to preserve and protect our coastline and contribute to the economy and the quality of life at the Jersey Shore and the entire State. Guests were entertained by live music from Brian Kirk and the Jirks, who kept the crowd of over 500 dancing throughout the evening.

Hackensack Meridian Bayshore Medical Center Foundation will host its signature fundraising event on August 11 at Spring Valley Meadows in Morganville. The event will take place from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. and will feature a cocktail style, outdoor, tented reception. In 1972, the then-named Bayshore Community Hospital opened its doors to the public. In keeping with that spirit, the celebration will also feature music from the 70s to honor its founding decade while welcoming guests to raise vital funds for Hackensack Meridian Bayshore Medical Center, as it is known today. “Bayshore Medical Center was founded on philanthropy and the hard work of the community,” said Frank Citara, MBA, president and chief hospital executive, Bayshore Medical Center. “The medical center has grown exponentially since then and has expanded from a small, community hospital, to an award-winning medical center that is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and performs groundbreaking procedures thanks to a highly educated and compassionate care team. We must continue to grow in order to meet the increasingly complex needs of our community, and events such as this help to make our upward trajectory possible.” Community support funded the construction of the hospital 50 years ago, and has recently funded a variety of critical needs, including the construction of the new Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center, robotic surgery technology, imaging equipment such as CTs and 3D mammography, access to mammograms for uninsured patients, nursing scholarships, and much more. Proceeds from the signature celebration will support Bayshore Medical Center’s greatest needs, to provide the nonprofit medical center with critical dollars. With a history of philanthropy and fundraising for various causes, they raise awareness and rally support for LADACIN by promoting the fundraiser to restaurant patrons. In return for a donation of $25 or more to LADACIN, the Turning Point offered guests gift cards for free entrees on a future visit. LADACIN Network provides a continuum of care, including educational, therapeutic, social, residential, and support services to infants, children, and adults with complex physical and developmental disabilities or delays, including childcare and pre-school, early intervention, school programs, adult day programs, vocational training, supported employment, residential options, and respite programs. Today LADACIN serves over 3,500 individuals and families in 14 locations throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Lunch Break Kicks Off Back-to-School Drive Between now and August 20, Lunch Break is inviting the community to be part of its Back-to-School Drive. Each year during the annual Community Picnic in Red Bank, upwards of 600 backpacks containing school supplies are distributed to families without the financial means to adequately prepare their children for the upcoming school term. With 30 years of experience on Wall Street as an investment analyst and portfolio manager, Hilary Kramer has been described by Financial Times as “a one-woman financial investment powerhouse”. A frequent guest commentator providing investment insight and economic analysis on CNBC, CBS, Fox News, and Bloomberg, her investment insights are often quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and Reuters. With her many successes as an analyst, investment banker, certified fraud examiner (CFE), and best-selling author one could imagine a life of ease and opulence, but hers is instead a story of happiness in the face of heartache. This Ranney School graduate has deep connections to her roots in Red Bank, and credits Holmdel with helping her both heal and find peace both as a child and now as she deals with the recent loss of her 9/11-hero husband Timothy Coyne. Having been given the middle name Joy, Hilary exudes both a sense of purpose and a love for life. Insightful, wildly successful, and a woman of strength, here’s our CM interview with Hilary Joy Kramer. CM: You have a great love for Holmdel… Hilary Kramer (HK): I was six years old when we arrived at the farmland of Holmdel…it was 1970. I came from a family that has lived for three generations in Red Bank, and suddenly I’m in Holmdel with cows grazing in the pastures and I’m selling vegetables at Englishtown Flea Market on Saturday mornings. Bruce Springsteen was our closest neighbor and didn’t seem to have air conditioning, or even screens over at his place, because there was often the faint rhythm of live jamming music coming from his farmhouse. During the late summer nights, I could hear the finales of bands finishing their performances at the then Garden State Arts Center.
CM: That’s a long family history in Red Bank. How did life in Holmdel compare? HK: Holmdel was so different from my life in Red Bank where I first lived. Walking across the bridge to Broad Street and visiting my grandparents and aunts and uncles who loved their town and worked with pride at their businesses. They owned a butcher shop, some were tailors, and my grandfather’s business was Red Bank Window Cleaning. My grandfather had this heavy Romanian accent and was so popular and well-liked. Many of the aristocratic family members of Monmouth County’s elite in Rumson knew my grandfather was always there to secretly give them a loan and never charge interest and never tell a soul when they fell on tough times. In those days, there weren’t credit cards or lines of credit at banks and people sometimes got in temporary jams. My grandfather was so happy to be in America. He loved to help others and he proudly paid his taxes. He taught me Romanian and Yiddish and how to clean a window really well! CM: So why the move from Red Bank to Holmdel? HK: My mother played basketball, point guard, for Red Bank Regional. She came to know Holmdel because in her time, and all the way until the year we moved to Holmdel, the Holmdel students, who were mainly farmers, went to school in Red Bank. CM: My family was one of those Holmdel farm families. Do you have siblings? HK: I grew-up with two sisters. I was the youngest. My older sister suffered with a cognitive disability. The superintendent of the Holmdel school system sent her to a specialized school in Massachusetts and that changed her life. To this day, she works, brings dignity to the lives of others, and has carved a life for herself in Bay Head, New Jersey. My middle sister was ten years old when she and I were bicycling on a hot summer Sunday night. A car came too close to us and clipped her, sending her over her handlebars and fatally hitting her head on the curb. I was with her waiting for the ambulance that never
arrived. A policeman finally picked up her lifeless body and put her in the back seat of his squad car and took her to Riverview Hospital. I waited with the anxiety and fear that no fiveyear-old should ever experience. Ultimately, we were told that all the ambulances were down in Asbury Park given the unrest that was brewing in those final days of June 1970. To this day I support the River Plaza Fire and Rescue department. Many of the volunteers were my childhood friends and neighbors. That is why we moved from Red Bank, to escape the bad memories of my sister’s death. Holmdel healed Hilary Kramer with her daughter, Shia, in Asbury Park me. Without my husband, it is not so easy, but they keep us laughing and always remind us that things are only things as they chew a $1500 pair of shoes. The last two years have been full of loss for so many all over the world, and our sliver of New Jersey is no exception. But we are resilient, and we are bouncing back so quickly. Nothing can bend the spirit of those of us from New Jersey. And when nothing seems to help… there’s always Jersey Freeze! CM: Why did you choose finances as your passion? HK: Having come from a family that ran mom-and-pop companies, I love that you
can be an owner of a big company. This has never ceased to amaze me. I love everything about the workings of the stock and bond markets and the surprises that accompany every day. The beauty is that it isn’t gambling. The more you understand a company and study its government filings, as well as independent auditor reports, the more you can garner. I combine my eagle- eye and constant need to learn everything about the business. Then I combine my internal examinations with the macro view of the world, which is just as critical. Factors that influence a sector or total market’s behavior span many events: tax policy, geo-political changes that can bring jitters to even the calmest trader, demographic, and socioeconomic changes. For example, as baby boomers age, entire sectors have been created that have brought a boon to the investors that an-

I really wanted to go professional, but the draw of Morgan Stanley’s banking department was too appealing to give up. We were in the middle of a bull market and I jumped right into transactions that, if not for the timing, I would never have experienced. Helping companies in every space from public storage to fast food go public was thrilling and, to this day, I see the money that an initial equity offering brings to a company as a means for growth and development. After business school, I continued in investment banking until I was recruited to work for one of the wealthiest men in the world. I soon became the only women chief investment officer that I have ever come across. I hired a woman to run our flight department. I did find it ironic that a Latin American gave me the chance to manage more billions than any U.S. hedge fund would have allowed. But, then again, we are still waiting for there to be a woman U.S. President. CM: What types of financial services do you offer clients today? HK: In 2010, I launched GreenTech Research providing clients with in-depth future trend forecasting and actionable ‘ahead of the curve’ entry strategies for profiting from those growth areas. As my following has grown, and as talent within my firm continues to flourish, I ultimately launched subscription-based newsletters. My flagship newsletters are a value newsletter that provides income and growth, and the other one is called GameChangerStocks. I identify emerging industries as well as traditional companies that are transforming themselves into high growth businesses. A Community Touchdown for the Holmdel Hornets This spring, the Holmdel Hornets football team helped local senior citizens with outdoor clean-up projects raising its teamwork to a new level by taking it from the field into the community. One such project found several Hornets working at Marilyn Fortunato’s home in Holmdel. “As a team, they divided the work to be done, no easy task on more than an acre of wooded area full of fallen leaves,” said Marilyn
Fortunato. “The pile was reaching four feet high and 25 feet across before the job was finished. And, like a Santa on his sleigh, Head Coach Jeff Rainess arrived with a truck to haul it all away. He got right into it with his team, lifting tarps full of leaves and debris onto the truck. Hopefully it will become a tradition, and for me I will be cheering them on at their home games and volunteering to help them out as needed. After all, we are on the same team!”
Message from Holmdel Mayor, Greg Buontempo The time between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July turns our attention to our great nation, and particularly those who sacrificed to establish and then protect it. Holmdel was able to express our gratitude to those brave individuals and their families at our Memorial Day Ceremony at the end of last month. We were very fortunate to be joined by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Holmdel High School Band, and a representative from Naval Weapons Station Earle. It was truly a special event, and I am pleased that we were able to recognize our fellow Americans who, in the words of our 16th president, “gave the last full measure of devotion.” On the topic of military service, this month the Township will be dedicating a segment of Crawfords Corner Road in honor of US Army General John Tilelli, Jr. The general, who was raised in Holmdel, served as Vice Chief of Staff

of the United States Army, Commanding General of the United States Army Forces Command, and Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command. After retiring from active duty, General Tilelli served as the president of the United Services Organization (USO). We are thrilled to welcome home this proud son of Holmdel and to be able to recognize his life and his career by dedicating a portion of the street on which he grew up in his honor on July 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Holmdel Fire Station (12 Crawfords Corner Road, Holmdel). Now in the summer months, I look forward to seeing you all at our parks and events and being able to enjoy the outdoors in our beautiful Township. Keeping History Alive By Joseph Santoro, Colts Neck First Aid Squad Historian Summer is here and so is a special date in Colts Neck history. July 1st marked the date when the Colts Neck First Aid Squad started serving the community 55 years ago in 1967. (The incorporation was October 27, 1966; however, the squad did not actually start operations until July the following year.) Before its opening, Colts Neck did not have an ambulance service and relied on other towns to respond to emergencies. This, however, took a considerable amount of time as well as resources from other towns, which is why a group of concerned Colts Neck firefighters decided enough was enough; the town of Colts Neck deserved its own ambulance service to provide care to its residents. The township agreed with the group of men that the need was there, and leased part of the township’s old hall located on Route 537 to the newly formed first aid squad at a cost of $1 per year. The building was a one garage house with a white door and black lettering above reading Colts Neck First Aid Squad. The organization would then go on to purchase its first two ambulances: first a 1960 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Guardian and later on a 1966 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Volunteer ambulance. In its first year alone, the Colts Neck First Aid Squad would respond to 77 calls for help. From just two ambulances, the squad has grown with now four ambulances to keep up with the increasing population. The 77 calls from the first year have now risen to over 600 calls for help annually. Since its start, the Colts Neck First Aid Squad has remained
volunteer, allowing those in need to receive high quality, professional carefree of charge. This is done through donations but most importantly by our selfless volunteers, without whom the squad would not exist. Holmdel 11U Take USABL American East Championship The Holmdel 11U Baseball team defeated South Wall 13-3 on June 13 to win the USABL American East Championship. It was an outstanding performance all around from a team that is one of the few from Holmdel to ever win the title in this division. The team will move on to the USABL World Series in August. The team consists of Coach Gary Woodward, Coach Keith Murphy, Coach Jay Lauter (not pictured), Carter Muller, Chase Polivina, Greyson Crowther, Levi O’Connor, Chris Hendrickson, Charlie Murphy, Lucas Lauter, Scott Woodward, Logan Placca, Tyler Carri, Matthew Impreveduto, and Connor Quigley.
Holmdel’s Andrea Bell Wolff Stars in Adventures in Vegas Adventures in Vegas, a fun, true-life musical escapade, features Andrea Bell Wolff and opens at AMT Theater in New York City on July 30. A long-time Holmdel resident, Wolff appeared on Broadway in Hello Dolly and George M!. She has played roles in L’il Abner, Grease, Little Shop of Horrors and Funny Girl performing at such venues as St. James Theater, Goodspeed, The Papermill Playhouse, and Sacramento Music Circus. From age 16, petite dynamo Andrea Bell was cast in five productions of Hello Dolly beginning with the National Tour starring Carol Channing. She then transitioned to the show on Broadway, alternating in roles as either Ermengarde or Minnie Fay. At 19, she traded her high button shoes for the glitzy glamour of Las Vegas and a part in the legendary Bottoms Up Revue at Caesar’s Palace. Reading from her circa 1970 diary, Andrea re-enacts her thrilling year as a Las Vegas showgirl replete with feathers, sequins, and sex in Adventures in Vegas. The year starts out promisingly as she gains the interest of an influential producer, parties with stars, flirts with handsome men and forms a friendship with the inimitable Rusty Warren. But as is often the way in show business, her stellar year comes to an unexpected finale. Andrea underscores her Vegas adventures with a sexy

Student Talent Blossoms at RCDS Arts Festival
Nothing builds students’ self-confidence, focus, and perseverance quite like the arts. While many schools have cut back on their arts programs, creative expression at The Rumson Country Day School has never been stronger and that was celebrated this spring at the Annual Arts Festival. One of RCDS’s most widely attended events, the Arts Festival was inspired to elevate both the visual and performing arts. After two years of a virtual format, the event returned in-person and better than ever showcasing a broad scope of artwork and performances by students in Nursery through Grade Eight. “Seeing our students rise to the challenge is wonderful,” said Music Teacher Amanda Schottlander. “The Arts Festival is one of my favorite events because it is a culmination and a celebration of all the learning that happens throughout the year. There is so much hard work that goes into preparing for the event. The students take on new responsibilities, they dedicate themselves to practice, they step up as leaders, and they really shine.” Student talent blossomed this year as young artists excitedly led their guests to point out their masterpieces on display including sculptures, ceramics, woven patterns, mosaics, pop art, and more. Joyful voices of student songbirds resounded in the Blake Gymnasium. Meanwhile, the auditorium and little gym were staged for the Lower School band, keyboardist, and young soloists. Thundering applause reverberated the halls in response to all of the impressive performances. RCDS’s enriched arts curriculum includes five, full-time faculty for the visual arts, music, and drama. A robust schedule of art classes introduces students to a range of mediums and projects that often connect to content studied in the classroom. In addition, each Lower School class produces a class play, a beloved tradition where every student has a role. The plays not only provide opportunities for students to develop creative passions but also bolster public speaking skills, teamwork, and leadership.

FINANCIAL EXPERTS Often a spouse’s interest in a small business or a professional practice is an asset subject to equitable distribution. A restaurant, a software company, an architectural practice and a law firm are examples of assets that may have to be divided as part of the divorce. In order to equitably distribute this type asset, its value must first be established. Since there is usually no readily available comparable sales data to consult in reaching an estimate of value, other methodologies have been devised by accountants and courts to calculate value for divorce purposes. In nearly all such cases, a forensic accountant must be retained to scrutinize business records. Tax returns, payroll ledgers, checkbooks, and credit card statements are usually just the beginning. Frequently an onsite inspection of the business facility is included in the analysis. In this way, the forensic accountant works to establish the true
economic benefit the owners derive from the business. The economic benefit then supplies a key variable in the formulas that ultimately result in an estimate of value. Interest rates, discount rates, premiums, and tax calculations will also be considered when calculating the true economic benefit and, thus, the value of the business. Tangible assets like equipment, intangible assets like accounts receivable and good will are also among the factors that must be included in the analysis. Once the value of the owner spouse’s interest is determined, the discussion will turn to the other spouse’s fair share of that value and how best to pay it as part of the equitable distribution of marital assets and liabilities. Several diverse factors, set forth in statues and case law, are considered in determining the non-owner spouse’s equitable interest in the asset. His or her direct contribution to the acquisition, maintenance,

and growth of the asset are important elements. However, indirect contributions such as emotional support, efforts in connection with other assets, and attention to the home and the family are equally important. Practical economic considerations come into play to determine the best way for payment to be made. The value and distribution of other assets, the incomes of the parties, the availability of financing, interest rates, tax consequences, and the allocation of marital and non-marital debt are just a few. Each business has unique characteristics that make generalizations dangerous. Coming to a fair estimate of value and a workable plan for payment requires the involvement of an experienced financial professional. Although the professional’s task is often time intensive and expensive, it is indispensable and, therefore, well worth the investment.

What a crazy time we are living in. We are seeing inflation soar like a rocket as the price of everything we need and want rise beyond not just comprehension, but at levels that force us to change our habits, plans and expectations. We still have a war raging across the world and global economies struggling as they watch and hope the United States will orchestrate a turnaround to save the planet. Closer to home we have families opening their bills, 401k, IRA envelopes and shopping carts at the supermarket only to be further frustrated by precipitous changes there. Those less fortunate than our readers are really struggling with not only the complexities of distress “caused by others”, but with the inability to make ends meet, and provide basic necessities and quality of life for their families. Generally, an over-optimist, I try to understand and digest “what the heck is going on here”? In finance, the “greater fool theory” suggests that one can sometimes make money through the purchase of seemingly overvalued things/assets (an item with a purchase price exceeding its intrinsic or logical value); when and if that asset can later be sold at an even higher price. This is the fundamental mantra of growing money - buying low and selling high, be that a house, a stock, a collectible; basically any “investment”. In this construct, one “fool” might pay for a product or asset, hoping that he/she can sell it to an even “greater fool”, and make a profit or at least get it at a better price than the next fool. It is as simple as understanding supply and demand. This only works as long as there are enough new “Greater Fools” willing to pay higher and higher prices. This half explains our inflation dilemma (the definition of which is, too much money chasing too low supply of goods/services). There is too much money post-pandemic and demand in the economy after stay-at-home shutdowns (where people
couldn’t spend), canceled travel and entertainment along with government “stimulus”. This, coupled with postpandemic short supply of everything from baby formula, cars and eggs (too low supply). Eventually, investors and consumers can no longer deny that the price is out of touch with reality, at which point a sell-off or shutdown can cause the price (and demand) to drop significantly. This is loosely what we hear and read about, and “the fear of ” recession. Due to basic human behavior, conditioning and biases, some people are drawn to assets whose price they see increasing, however irrational it might be. This effect is often further exacerbated by herd mentality, whereby people hear stories of others who bought in early and made big profits, or the runaway price/availability of toilet paper - causing those who did not buy to feel a “fear of missing out” (FOMO). A “bubble” starts when any group of products, in this case those associated with the excitement of rising prices (be that of stock prices, milk eggs or toilet paper) begin to snowball. The updraft encourages more people to buy, which causes even more “exuberance” and media coverage, which further pushes even more people to buy (which creates big “profits” for early buyers – think about the crazy ride of Bitcoin). The self-proclaimed “successful” will tell you at cocktail parties how easy it is to get rich, which causes stuff, stocks and merchandise to rise further (especially if there is too much money out there thanks to the pandemic), which pulls in larger and larger groups of buyers. The whole mechanism starts to resemble a kind of Ponzi scheme where more and more buyers/investors must be found to buy the stuff and stock from the earlier investors. The question becomes – when do prices get to a point where we stop buying, or more appropriately, when do we run out of greater fools? The bottom line – this is all “normal” so hang in there. These valleys and behaviors are always cyclical (a fancy way of saying we’ve been here before and we will be here again). Historically speaking we tend to recover and trend even further upward (and we most certainly will recover). You see, a tiger doesn’t change its stripes – the proverbial tiger here being that the toilet paper seekers, the economy, the markets or the eternal optimists.

A special lemonade stand made a beautiful, sunny June day even more memorable and enjoyable at The Country Day School of Colts Neck (CDSCN). Surrounded by a sea of gold shirts, the Rytter family served lemonade to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a foundation dedicated to funding research for childhood cancer. Members of The Country Day School family since 2016, the Rytters were personally touched by cancer two years ago when Evie Rytter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at just 15 months old. “We want to extend our deepest thanks to everyone for all the kindness and generosity that helped make Evie’s lemonade stand a huge success,” said Evie’s mother, Katie Rytter. “We could not have asked for a more perfect morning to have our event and we absolutely crushed our goal for fundraising. On the morning of the lemonade stand, we raised over $2,300 and through CDSCN, we raised over $4,000. Those figures helped us to a grand total of over $14,000 that will go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand to help fund research for childhood cancer!” Since the first days of Evie’s battle with cancer, the families of The Country Day School have been supportive of the Rytter family. “We are so happy that Evie’s Lemonade Stand was such a great success!” shared Lori Ellis, owner of CDSCN. “Evie is the bravest girl we know and an inspiration to all of us. June 10th marked two years that Evie has been cancer-free! Dawn Marie Vetterl Turns an Opportunity into a Career By Cathy Padilla The name of the IBEW has always been a symbol of the electrical industry’s best, a standard that has been achieved through education, training, safety, and craftsmanship. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 400 was chartered into existence in 1917 in Asbury Park and has since offered individuals who are accepted into an apprenticeship the opportunity to “earn while they learn,” attending school in the evenings while working in the field during the day. Long-time Middletown resident Dawn Marie Vetterl took her son for such an opportunity and decided to jump in herself. Now she is an Electrician Foreman and was named IBEW Local 400 Apprentice of the Year. “I chose this type of work because I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands,” shared Dawn. “I became friendly with some of the guys from local 400. I loved the stories they would tell about their work and I found myself a bit jealous of all they accomplish.” With a background in teaching, Dawn thought education would be her passion. Her apprenticeship and subsequent career were unexpected, but something she finds more fulfilling than her past endeavors. “First off, I’m passionate about learning and in this industry there’s always something new to learn,” said Dawn. “I enjoy working side by side with brothers/sisters, there are a lot of amazing people in this industry. I also like how each job is different. I get to experience different aspects of electrical work and travel to different areas in New Jersey. I love that I can get up in the morning and actually enjoy going to work.” A bit older than the average apprentice, Dawn shrugged off the offer to enter the program when she took her son to the union hall to sign up. “I kind of laughed because I’m a bit older and a woman,” said Dawn. “I really thought about it over the next year and asked myself ‘why not?’ Like I said, I love working with my hands. Thanks to my Dad I know how to use tools. I always enjoyed putting my kids’ toys together, working on my car, and just tinkering around with different things. I finally decided to give it a try. It seemed like a big challenge, but at this point in my life I wanted more for myself. After taking the entrance exam, I was informed that I had passed and went for the interview. When I found out I was accepted, I was ecstatic and also extremely nervous. I really didn’t know what to expect.”

Five years of hard work both in the field and in the classroom has paid off, and with each year Dawn’s confidence grows. “I have found that, like with any challenge, you have to find a way to overcome,” shared Dawn. “I received the honor of Apprentice of the Year. That is based on grades over the five-year period. The different journeymen that I was teamed up with on numerous jobs each taught me different things to help me succeed, and I appreciate all the tricks of the trade and knowledge they bestowed on me. Now it’s my turn to pass on that knowledge.”
