can’t believe it is August already, summer has gone by in a blink of an eye. I was thinking to myself the other day that I still haven’t been to the beach yet, I swear I used to be there all the time. But as we grow older, life seems to get in the way, and to be honest – just the thought of the beach on the weekends scare me. Those weekend warriors aka bennies that we all seem to dislike crowd the beach and the experience isn’t as relaxing as I would hope it would be – so I stay away until September (my favorite time) – and visit a friend’s pool or find an activity to do. Recently, I took up kayaking, literally just woke up one day and went to the store and bought myself one. I saw a couple kayakers the night before out on the Raritan Bay while I was walking my dogs and it looked so peaceful. So there you go, picked up a new hobby, why not?! I’ve gone out a handful of times already, and really am enjoying the scenery of the shoreline – plus the exercise is great. I wanted to share this photo with all my readers, I took this on a sandbar out in the bay, just parked my kayak and captured the moment.

Create Your Own Now let’s get to this issue of Community Magazine (CM). Some of you might be surprised at our front cover shot, as we always have a photo relating to the season, well this month we wanted to try something a little different. As you can see, we have two local ladies – twins to be precise – that are starring on Bravo TV’s hit show Real Housewives of New Jersey. We understand that sometimes reality TV isn’t all that “real”, so CM editor Michelle Tuchol sat down one afternoon with the new reality stars to talk about life, the show and family, check out our exclusive interview with “the Twins” on page 28. OPERATION PROVIDE COMFORT PRESENTS JACQUIE LEE IN…

A Concert to Benefit Union Beach

C

olts Neck native and The Voice finalist Jacquie Lee will star in “Two Towns-One Voice-One Mission,” a concert hosted by Operation Provide Comfort to benefit the residents of Union Beach on August 23, 2014 at the Robert J. Collins Arena, Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey. Ticket prices are $50, $75, $100 and $250 for the VIP package; available now by calling 800.514.3849 or visiting www.opcunionbeach.org/tickets. All proceeds will directly benefit the residents of Union Beach who are still struggling to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. 16-year-old vocal powerhouse Jacquie Lee steadfastly honed her songwriting and performances on Jersey’s local scene before striking a chord with America on the top-rated NBC show The Voice. Under the mentorship of pop superstar Christina Aguilera, Jacquie made an impressive showing as first runner up, signaling this young artist’s amazing talent. Jacquie’s debut single “Broken Ones” has over three million streams on Spotify and shot to the Top 20 on iTunes Pop Chart. Jacquie recently signed to Atlantic Records in joint partnership with 300 Entertainment. Jacquie is touring the country as part of the 31-date Voice Live Tour, which began in June. “We’re absolutely thrilled that Jacquie is donating her time, talent and energy to help her fellow New Jerseyans,” said OPC Founder Lt. Col. Jim Sfayer, USMC Ret. “We’re hoping this event raises awareness that the rebuilding effort is far from over, as well as the much needed funds to make it a reality.”

Two Towns One Voice One Mission 8

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Prior to The Voice, Jacquie was an aspiring singer/ songwriter and performed with Rockit, a performance program run out of the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ. Even then, charitable events were close to her heart. Jacquie did not hesitate when asked to join Operation Provide Comfort in raising money to help the residents of Union Beach as they continue rebuilding their homes and their lives. “Being in a position to help a community in my home state is a privilege for me,” said Ms. Lee. “Knowing I can share my talent to help others and raise awareness is one of the incredible benefits of participating in The Voice show and summer tour.” Union Beach, NJ is a small borough of mostly single-family homes (which are the owners’ primary residences). It is on the Raritan Bay, nestled between Keyport and Keansburg. Union Beach sustained devastating damage from Super Storm Sandy. Nearly 200 homes needed to be demolished, another 500 took on 5’ of water, and another 1,000 had up to 3’ of water damage. Police, Fire, Emergency Services, and the school all sustained significant damage to buildings and equipment. Sadly, the task of rebuilding is not close to accomplished. OPC currently welcomes event sponsors and donations for gift baskets to be auctioned prior to the event. Interested parties may contact Diana Piotrowski, OPC administrator at 732.946.3474 or globalinfo1@verizon. net. For more information on Operation Provide Comfort, please visit www.opcunionbeach.org or https://www. facebook.com/OperationProvideComfortUnionBeach.

Colts Neck Business Association Heats Up with Summer Gatherings In community happenings, a Business Roundtable was held on June 23 at the Colts Neck court house sponsored by the Monmouth County Freeholders and the Colts Neck Township Committee. The purpose of the evening and platform was to discuss existing conditions and ways to improve the brand and “experience” of one of the most admired towns in New Jersey – Colts Neck.

T

opics included ways to advance the business district, programs to support local residents and campaigns the CNBA can consider and play a key role in positively promoting the town for the benefit of both the businesses and inhabitants. As a result, the CNBA will be spearheading the effort with the Colts Neck Economic Development Committee to continue and further the groundwork set forth at the June 23 Roundtable. The Committee will meet the last Thursday of each month. Visit the Monmouth County website www.visitmonmouth.com and the CNBA website www.ColtsNeckBusiness.org for more information. The CNBA is a proud and continued supporter of Operation Provide Comfort (OPC), a non-profit organization developed to support NJ Shore communities still suffering from Hurricane Sandy. This month the CNBA is sponsoring Colts Neck’s own Jacquie Lee in concert benefitting OPC on August 23, 2014 at the Robin J. Collin Arena at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. The effects of Sandy are certainly still visible in Union Beach. Now, Jacquie Lee of NBC’s “The Voice,” will headline the “Two Towns-One Voice-One Mission”. Tickets are on sale now by calling 800.514.3849 and/or visiting www.opcunionbeach.org/tickets . Proceeds raised will benefit residents of Union Beach through the group Operation Provide Comfort, which is headed by former Marine and Colts Neck resident Jim Sfayer.

COLTS NECK MIDDLE SCHOOL

Advanced Chorus Performs In Washington D.C.

C

edar Drive Middle School (CDMS) Advanced Chorus is an amazing group of talented and dedicated students who love what they do. They perform throughout the year and have visited many exciting places. CDMS Music teacher Mrs. Krystyna Hubbard shared that at the annual Music in the Parks adjudication, the Chorus earned a Superior First Place Award. Her wonderful news did not end there. “The CDMS Advanced Chorus was fortunate to have been selected for the opportunity to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime event celebrating 200 years of the Star Spangled Banner held in Washington, D.C. on Flag Day, June 14.” The CDMS Advanced Chorus students held fundraising events prior to their trip in order to help offset expenses. These included selling fun pasta, poinsettia plants, and candy. Mrs. Hubbard said the Colts Neck PTO generously contributed a $1,500 mini grant toward the cost of the trip. Forty-five Advanced Chorus members went on the trip which was from June 13 through June 15. Although rehearsals were very intense said Mrs. Hubbard, the students did have the opportunity to do a walking tour of the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. “The tour guide explained each and the students were very impressed especially by the Vietnam Memorial. They were able to see a little bit of history and experience how others were impacted by these memorials. It was very touching.” On June 14, CDMS Advanced Chorus members were a part of “Anthem for America-Raise It Up!”, which featured

a 450-person choir representing 46 US States and was conducted by guest conductors Francisco Nunez, Eric Whitacre and Colonel Lang, the US Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants. It was sponsored by Chorus America, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Smithsonian Institution. Mrs. Hubbard noted that Francisco Nunez, conductor of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award, led the mass choir rehearsals Friday night and Saturday morning at the Kennedy Center, as well as the performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Eric Whitacre, Grammy-award winning composer and conductor of the Internationally renowned Virtual Choir, joined Mr. Nunez in rehearsals

Saturday morning, shared a questionand-answer time with the singers and directed “America the Beautiful.” Colonel Lang of the Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants, conducted several patriotic pieces including “The Star Spangled Banner.” The entire event was telecast live on YouTube and ESPN3 and can still be viewed on YouTube. “This was such a valuable experience for the students. They were participants in the historical event of bringing the Star-Spangled Banner and our flag together for the first time – so much more than merely seeing it. This was a rich experience for them as they were also interacting with other students and choirs from across the country. You can’t teach moments like that,” shared Mrs. Hubbard.

NJX Celtic

Capture State Cup Championship

T

he NJX Celtic U12G team captured the US Club NJ state cup championship on Sunday, May 11, 2014 with a resounding 2-0 win over PDA Storm. The first half was an evenly played game going into halftime tied 0-0. The Celtic came out strong to start the second half and then a clear from the PDA defense rolled out to left back Kate Cook who took a long shot that bounced over the PDA goalkeeper to score. Celtic took the lead 1-0 but PDA began to push forward. The Celtic defense anchored by center backs Angelina Rodriguez and Erin Gilfillan along with outside backs Morgan Hovan and Kate Cook held up against the attack. Key outstanding saves were made by goalkeeper Kelly Lambertson including a few scrambles inside the box. It was a true team effort with outstanding control of the midfield by Katherine Leturgez, Claudia Satzke, Ranya Senhaji and Lulu Lyle along with constant work up and down the field by forwards Bryonna Worthy, Carolina Fernandez, Sarah Letts, Bryn Radvanski and Kristen Battista. Jazmin Brown played thru a major injury up top to help will the

team to victory and spark some offense. The Celtic offense finished off the game on a quick counter attack. Attacking center midfielder Ranya Senhaji drove at the PDA defense and then slipped a perfectly placed through ball to center striker Bryonna Worthy. Bryonna sprinted behind the PDA defense and finished off the opportunity with a beautiful shot buried into the back of the net. NJX Celtic won 2-0 and captured their 2nd NJ Cup championship. They first won the championship back in 2010. The NJ Cup is a highly competitive, single elimination tournament open to all teams playing US Club soccer in the State of New Jersey. It is a six round event consisting of up to 64 teams in an age group. Early rounds of the games are played throughout March and April. The NJX Celtic won their early rounds 7-0 over Thistle Comets, 5-0 over Mercer Spurs, defeated NJ Force Imperials in a penalty kick shootout after double overtime in the quarterfinals and 3-0 over PDA Dragons in the semi-finals. The team outscored their opponents 18 goals for and only one against throughout the entire tournament. The team is coached by Steve DeMatteo, Matt Woolston and Colleen Cook.

If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

T

he twins,” as affectionately known on this season’s Real Housewives of New Jersey (RHONJ), are as real as they come: sweet, down-to-earth, and equipped with no holds bar attitudes.

“Double the trouble, double the fun!” says Teresa.

I sit waiting inside the Colts Neck Dunkin’ Donuts, an apparent hot-spot for a Sunday afternoon, with Bobby Ciasulli, Nicole’s boyfriend, watching the pair slowly but surely waltz in after a small gaggle has coerced (with very little convincing needed) the two to chat. The ladies wrapped up their first season of filming RHONJ in April and are anxiously awaiting the public’s opinion. This is the first time a set of twins is cast for the show, and they are excited to be a part of that milestone. Teresa and Nicole were raised in Brooklyn, NY, but now reside in Colts Neck, surrounded by loving friends and a close-knit Italian family. “Family is always the most important,” says Teresa, who believes that she and her sister are each other’s rock. They also seem to play off of one another the way you’d expect a pair of females who share similar DNA would. For those who haven’t seen the first couple episodes of Season 6, a brief history: Teresa remarried her ex-husband, Rino, after an 11-year divorce; they have Giovanni, 18, who will be starting his freshman year at Brookdale Community College in the fall. Teresa helps run the family’s restaurant, Ponte Vecchio, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, with Rino. The family also owns Angelo’s on Mulberry St. in NY.

If you know Nicole Napolitano Mauriello and Teresa Aprea - even if it has only been a short time - then you are more than likely to be friends for life.

Nicole has two sons, Joey, 14, and Anthony, 16, from a past marriage, who both attend Colts Neck High School. Currently, Nicole works for Jets.com as a Private Aviation Specialist, where she has become an asset to the firm in helping clients navigate the ins and outs of personal aviation transportation (You can reach her at Nicole@jets.com). She and Bobby have been dating for over a year. When I first met the twins, I could tell that they were not the type of women to turn down any opportunity. Both are very outgoing and opinionated; but after speaking with them, I also noticed that

They admitted, however, that crewmembers were extremely nice and helpful, and were able to make the transition smooth so the twins could pretend there were no cameras or crew filming every move. The objects of “The Twins” affection are their children, from left is Nicole with her two sons, Anthony and Joey, Teresa, and her son Giovanni at a family party.

Nicole recalls one filming sequence where she and Bobby were out to dinner…for four hours! Nothing out of the ordinary seemed to happen in their eyes, but at some point later in the evening, Bobby made a comment at the table about bread being sexy, and the only thing Nicole could do was roll her eyes. And that was the money shot.

Each of the twins feel blessed to have such prosperity in their lives, and have given back to their own community before fundraising during RHONJ filming. Nicole wants everyone to know about the organization that she’s involved in, Pietro’s Fight, to raise awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). You can visit the site here, at www.pietrosfight.org. The women are very active in the church community in Colts Neck, and enjoy volunteering at special events, and helping such causes as women’s shelters in neighboring areas. The twins seem to be experts at reinventing themselves. They have traveled to study and participated in international conferences to speak on personal development. They have run their own businesses. Teresa is even certified to assist in the OR! Just ask her about it! As women in their 40s—and no one’s really counting here—the possibilities of starting new ventures are still endless. Teresa hopes to start an organization or charity in honor of a dear friend who has recently passed away. She would also love to start a health and wellness business with Giovanni. Nicole sees a possible fashion line in her future, and wants to get back into tennis. Although they are still very athletic, both women were avid tennis players and very much involved with the Colts Neck Racquet Club. Nicole and Teresa agree that now is the time to sit down and talk about future plans. One thing is certain as the twin’s progress with their lives: every new venture will be together embracing each other’s support. I leave the twins as I had first met them: big hugs, kisses, and hope for the best of luck in the future.

Hazlet Farmers Market | Open Weekly

1 AGENT FOR THE LAST 9 YEARS

#

HOLMDEL-COLTS NECK

The Hazlet Business Owners Association recently introduced a weekly Farmers Market to Hazlet Township and the local community. Weather permitting, the Farmers Market is every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Airport Plaza in Hazlet until October. The Market opened on July 13, and with the summer upon us the HBOA Market offers consumers fresh produce, honey, plants, and more - straight from the farms. Adding to the variety of fresh produce at the Market are pickled products, fresh mozzarella, fresh breads, pierogis, stuffed cabbages, kielbasa, herbal remedies, gourmet nuts & dried fruits, homemade doggie treats, fresh pies and more. The Farmers Market is presented by the Hazlet Business Owners Association. Funds raised from the HBOA Market support the HBOA scholarship program, open to any Hazlet resident high school senior regardless of what high school they attend. Funds for this scholarship program are raised throughout the year through the Window Decorating Contest, HBOA networking events, and other HBOA events. Ted Koczon, the HBOA President states, “Not only does the Market help raise funds for a great cause such as the HBOA Scholarship Program, but it encourages the community to eat fresh and buy local.” (WIC & Senior FMNP vouchers accepted by some farmers at the HBOA Market.)

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Holmdel First Aid Squad (HFAS) is made up of dedicated volunteer responders who have already responded to over seven hundred 9-1-1 calls. HFAS has handled motor vehicle accidents with entrapment, CPR calls, a slew of broken bones, and medical emergencies. They are only able to respond to help the community due to the outpouring of financial support of Holmdel’s residents. For this they say, “Thank you!” Residents should have received the annual fund drive mailing at this time and HFAS is most grateful to all of those who have so kindly responded. For those who have not yet had a chance to contribute, please consider making a donation that will truly help HFAS to help you. Consider this: For an entity that neither has payroll expenditures nor provides benefits to its workers, HFAS manages a six-figure budget covering equipment purchases and maintenance, building repairs, education, disposable medical supplies and personal protection from communicable diseases. Yet 100% of their operating money comes from donations. This year, HFAS is in the process of acquiring two ambulances with much needed four wheel drive to upgrade their aging fleet. Half of the fleet is over 14 years old and is being nursed along as they are being regularly rotated out of service for ongoing repairs. Additionally, it becomes a time-consuming challenge to obtain discontinued or unavailable parts. With new four wheel drive ambulances, HFAS can overcome whatever Mother Nature throws at them, and with new suspension technology can provide the smoothest ride possible, (which is not a small item when dealing with broken bones), in a faster and more comfortable transport for their patients. A new ambulance equipped in the way HFAS believes to be essential costs over $200,000. Their ambulance drive goal this year is to be able to raise a substantial amount ($60,000) in order to start the manufacturing process. It could take a year to build, as it will be built to order. Remember that every little bit helps; please be as generous as you can. All donations are tax deductible. You can send your donation in with the annual fund drive mailer, or online PayPal donations can also be made by visiting their website at www. holmdelfirstaidsquad.org. HFAS is planning two upcoming events to further offset the cost of the ambulances. In September, the Squad will be hosting another wine tasting event at Bayonet Farms, and a 5K run at Vonage, both venues will be in Holmdel. For dates and details, check the HFAS website, or their Facebook page. Mark your calendars for these events—HFAS is counting on your support! Keep in mind that you can become a part of HFAS! Simply stop by their main building at 20 Crawford Corners Road on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. to get a guided tour, or submit a new member application on their website. Active membership stretches in age from 18-year-olds to those into their 70’s; and no prior medical training is necessary. It is never too late to start and join your neighbors in helping your community.

olts Neck Fire Company#1 held their annual Golf Classic and Barbecue at Pebble Creek Golf Club on July 11, 2014. The 80 golfers in attendance

included about 50 firemen as well as friends, family and residents of Colts Neck. The event was sponsored by Railroad Construction Companies. Unfortunately, no one won the $10,000 Hole in One Prize but the golfers did enjoy a game of “Beat the Pro,” during which they went against a golf pro to try winning extra money. It was great fun and a way for the Fire Company to receive additional funds. Some golfers were actually able to beat the pro golfer. DIVORCE TALK

PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.

Alimony Reform Q & A Last December I wrote about bills being considered by the legislature. It’s time for an update. Q: Has alimony reform progressed in the past year? A:

Q: Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. For more information please see the firm’s website at www. par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.

Actually it has and in a pretty big way.

What happened?

A: On June 30, 2014 a reform bill overwhelmingly passed both houses of the State legislature and was sent to the governor for signature. As of this writing he has not signed the bill into law.

Q:

Does it change current law?

A: It does in several ways. For example, the new bill eliminates “permanent” alimony (see Community Magazine, July 2013) and replaces it with “open durational” alimony.

The concept is less permanent and more indefinite.

Q: Does it create a formula for calculating the amount of alimony similar to the Child Support Guidelines? A: It does not. It leaves the calculation of the amount of alimony to the court’s discretion after considering fourteen enumerated factors. There is no formula for alimony.

Q: Does it create a formula for determining how long alimony will be paid? A: No, although it does limit the alimony term in marriages of less than twenty years. In those cases, alimony cannot be paid for a longer period than the length of the marriage. continued on next page >>

24th Annual

Colts Neck County Fair

Offered Four Days of Festivities for Locals STORY SUSAN MURPHY

V

olunteerism and the Colts Neck Country Fair go hand-in-hand. This year marked 24 years that the Fair has provided a family-friendly environment which benefits the community and the organizations that support it. The Fair opened July 10th at Bucks Mill Park and continued to entertain visitors through July 13th.

Dads and Moms were able try their hand at the games of chance

or take the Lions Club Hole-in-One Challenge; teens enjoyed Microsoft’s mix of X-Box games and their Dance Central, as well as testing their slapshot skills with the New Jersey Devils street team. The younger children were amazed by the 4H Rabbit Club, jumping aboard the awesome rides, and laughing with Vappo the Clown. The entire family was able to watch the Bayshore Companion Dog Club demonstrations, visit the CentraState Healthcare System mobile health van, enjoy a wide variety of vendors, and try out some of the delicious food in the food court area. Just some of the entertainment provided by numerous acts included Jazz, Acoustic, Student Showcases, music by The Moroccan Sheepherders, First to Friday (unplugged), Woodfish, and Upside, Slim Chance and the Gamblers. A plaque given yearly at the Fair for Volunteer of the Year was presented to Glen Dalakian.

Greeting guests was (left to right) Lois Cohen, Janice Sobieski and Steven Porzio

44

Deputy Mayor James Schatzle was pleased with this year’s Fair.

“On behalf of the Township Committee, we extend our thanks and appreciation to our Colts Neck Fair Committee – Larry and Karen Duffy, Anita and Emory Dedalis, and Janice and Ed Sobieski – for putting on a spectacular Fair. This year was a rebuilding year as we brought back Majestic Midways Rides and expanded back to four days. The entertainment was wonderful and the Clover Hill Coffee House was relaxing and inviting. Charlotte Clime and daughters Cindi and Debi did a wonderful job on the Colts Neck Women’s Club sponsored Great American Apple Pie Contest. What I like about the Fair is the opportunity to see your friends and neighbors in a great atmosphere and of course seeing the kids have such a great time. My boys, Jimmy and Jack were there all four days and had a blast. I cannot wait until next year!”

Every year, the Colts Neck Fair gives everyone the opportunity

to join in and bake their own version of an apple pie for the Great American Apple Pie Contest, which is sponsored by the Colts Neck Women’s Club. This year, the winners were: First place Mary Joffey of Morganville, second place Timothy Solisky of Marlboro (with bacon in pie!) and third place went to Kate & Ronnie Sullivan from Colts Neck.

Emma Engle of Colts Neck was a first-time pie contest judge at the Colts Neck Fair.

Fair Committee member Anita Dedalis shared, “I felt this

year’s fair was a lot of fun. Everyone had a great time. I hope everyone comes back to see us next year for our 25th anniversary, which should be a blast. The Fair Committee would like to thank everyone who made the 2014 Colts Neck Fair a success, from the entertainers to the vendors, and a big thanks to our Grand Sponsors - Delicious Orchards, Laird and Company, and CentraState Healthcare System.” She added that a four-year-old girl came up to her at the fair and said, “This Fair was awesome!” Seems like that best sums up the great Colts Neck Country Fair of 2014!

Holmdel Swim Team held their annual Swim Marathon on July 7 this year. This community team has swimmers from Holmdel, Middletown, Hazlet, Matawan, and Aberdeen who are all members of the Holmdel Swim Club. A high percentage of the swimmers are summer or recreational swimmers. Some are more competitive and swim year round. Event Coordinator Brian Healy has organized the Swim Marathon for the past two years. “Typically, the coaches choose a swimmer who has been on the team for a long time to have the honor of organizing the event. I have been swimming with the team since I was seven.” Healy attends Biotechnology High School in Freehold and will be a senior next year. Before heading off to college next summer, Healy would like to help raise a sizeable amount for the American Cancer Society (ACS). The Marathon has been held for over 15 years. “Swimmers get sponsors and then swim laps to raise money. Last year, the event raised $4,000. We always donate the money to the American Cancer Society,” explained Healy, who lost two of his grandparents to cancer. Almost everybody he knows has been touched in some way by cancer, either in their immediate family or extended family. The ACS is working on cancer research to help stop or find a cure for many of the most common types of cancers.

With 160 swimmers on the Holmdel Swim Team, representation for the Marathon was great, as about 130 swimmers participated. Together they swam over 5,000 laps and raised over $3,000 this year. Several of the older swimmers swam over 100 laps. After swimming, everyone enjoys a light breakfast donated by the parents. “A representative from the American Cancer Society usually attends to give out some prizes and talk to the swimmers about sun protection,” said Healy. This year, Crystal Figueroa was the ACS representative. On July 30, prizes that start at the $50 range will be awarded at the Swim Team party. Over 24 swim bags will go to swimmers who raised over $50. Over 16 t-shirts will be given to swimmers who raised over $100; and one visor will be given to the swimmer who raised over $300. “These are an amazing group of kids that show up and make this awesome event a priority every year,” said Healy.

Local Cadet Graduates from West Point Cadet Philip Alexander Kealy, son of Col. And Mrs. Luke Kealy of Holmdel, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on May 28, 2014. Kealy graduated from Holmdel High School in 2010. While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in Engineering Management. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Engineers branch and will report to Fort Bragg in North Carolina for his first assignment.

Colts Neck Troop 290

Enjoys Whitewater Rafting!

I

n June, Colts Neck Boy Scout Troop 290 went whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River in Jim Thorpe, PA. The Scouts also made a flag retirement box and properly retired the flags at the flag retirement ceremony on June 18. To start the month, the Scouts from Troop 290 made a box for retired American flags, led by Scout Coleby M. He planned the design of the collection box and organized the construction of the box by having other Scouts from the Troop gather at his home to do the work. The box was placed in the lower level of the Colts Neck Library for donations and will continue to remain there. At the Flag retirement ceremony, members of the Colts Neck High School Junior ROTC were the color guard and members of the troop gave the flags the respectful retiring they deserved. Many flags were supplied by the community using the collection box in the library. Later in the month, the Scouts went whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River, led by Peter S. and Mr. Mariner. The Troop spent the weekend camping, cooking and rafting in Jim Thorpe, PA. The Scouts were on their way to summer camp at Forestburgh, NY in July as this issue went to press and sailing in the Bahamas in August! Boy Scouts is for boys 11-17 years old. You can join at any time. Please send an email to Join@Troop290.com and the troop will respond back. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, check out their website, www.Pack90NJ.com, or send an email to Join@pack90nj.com. Holmdel Girl Scout Cadette Spreads the “Green” Word Julia Hamwi, a Girl Scout Cadette from Holmdel Troop 1248, spent an afternoon sharing some “Green tips” with Daisy Troop 862. Julia has chosen to make a difference in her community by informing and promoting enthusiasm among Holmdel Girl Scouts and students regarding recycling and other green initiatives. With much enthusiasm, she reviewed the basic steps of recycling,

as well as provided hands on display to all the girls. After the presentation, Julia assisted the children with a recycled picture frame craft made from cereal boxes and used tissue paper. Julia educated them on how they can make a big difference in their own homes and in the Holmdel community. The girls in Troop 862 were very grateful for the class and are looking forward to Julia’s return visit in the fall.

Oak Hill Academy Class Of 2014 Achieves And Moves Forward vision in the Monmouth County Intermediate School Soccer League. One Oak Hill team placed 2nd at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) jeopardy style academic competition. Eighth grader Harry Jain scored a perfect paper on the National Latin Exam. These are just a few of the highlights that the Class of 2014 brought to the table this year. It was due to their strength that they had so many options to continue their academic careers.

In June, the Class of 2014 graduated from Oak Hill Academy at the school’s annual graduation ceremony held in the Scire Student Activities Center. Their guest speaker, Mr. Douglas McKenzie, likened the years ahead of them to the canoe trip that they had taken together in September. He encouraged them to embrace the adventure ahead and continue their aspiration of lifelong learning as well as commitment to positively contributing to society. The Class of 2014 had many things to be proud of during this past year. The math team won their 5th consecutive title at the Brother Andrew CBA Math Contest in October including the top individual score in all private and public schools! They helped the school finish 1st in all Private/ Parochial schools at the nationally recognized Math Counts competition. In the fall the Varsity Soccer team won their di50

With a graduating class of 50, Oak Hill graduates will be going to 22 different high schools! This class was accepted to 28 different high schools; so there were some choices to be made. Oak Hill had nine acceptances into the very prestigious County Vocational Programs such as BioTech; High Tech, Allied Health, Communications and M.A.S.T., and another nine into the specialized program at public high schools such as law & public service in the Freehold Regional district, engineering, drama, and music at Red Bank Regional, and engineering at Wall High School. The largest acceptances were to the parochial schools that totaled 51! In fact, four of the boys received some academic scholarship to Christian Brothers Academy. Finally, in addition to their public school districts, students earned the right to attend private schools such as Lawrenceville, Phillips Exeter (NH), Peddie, Blair, and Ranney. Congratulations and here’s to a bright future ahead!
