Note from the Editor

Back to school - how could it be August already? The days are getting shorter and before we know it Local’s Summer will be upon us. College students are packing up, getting ready for new adventures, while kids under 18 are shopping for everything they need to have a successful year. The great news is there is still time to bring this copy of CM to the beach and enjoy the sun, surf, and sand while we help you prepare for the coming school year.

This SUMMER!

Create Your Own Private Oasis!

We will custom design with flowering shrubs and evergreens a landscape design that will suit your needs. Stone Walls | Pool Settings | Total Landscape Designs | Renovations

Make your property a place of beauty and seclusion and a daily place of tranquility.

We are the oldest landscape firm in Colts Neck.

In this issue we take a playful approach to Back to School by bringing you a cover feature on what was once only for children, but now sometimes exclusively for adults - cartoons. Now called animated series, there are many on during primetime hours. Our feature, To Know Her is to Love Him, introduces you to John Roberts who lives locally and voices one of the most well-known animated characters on TV today Linda Belcher of Fox’s Bob’s Burgers. The show has once again been nominated for an Emmy Award, having already won two, and John hopes to bring his talents to this month’s Monmouth Film Festival.

This month our Beyond Features put the spotlight on two very different careers. In Beyond the Blackboard we focus on Mandy Galante, a teacher who works at Mater Dei Prep and is a long-time resident of Little Silver. And in Beyond the Brand we bring you the trio of partners behind two very popular local restaurants, Rosalita’s Roadside Cantina and TRE. Find out, in their own words, why they have found success in their chosen fields. Our News from the Schools & Afterschool Programs will give you a look at what’s new and exciting in education in Monmouth County, while our story on page 60 will help you avoid the over-scheduled calendar of a new school year. On page 63 we tackle the question of whether or not to join the PTO, and on page 55 we talk kids and cell phones. All in all, a packed issue! As the dog star, Sirius, enjoys its place in the heavens this month, we at CM hope you too enjoy the Dog Days of Summer. All my best,

Local Pediatric Cancer Foundation Draws Crowd of 500 for Annual Picnic & Softball Tournament BY SUSAN MURPHY Over 500 people gathered at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel on July 14, 2018 for a day of clear skies, warm weather, and baseball as the Frances Foundation held its 12th annual Daniel R. Shalloo Sr. Memorial Picnic and Softball Tournament. Players, fans, pediatric cancer families, Frances Foundation volunteers, and guests were among those in attendance. Frances Foundation President Bob Heugle noted, “In total, this event, inclusive of the raffle, raised about $35,000. These proceeds contribute to our mission of delivering smiles to treating pediatric cancer warriors, as well as providing financial assistance and comfort to their families as compassionately and as personally as possible.” Approximately 75 volunteers worked the event to ensure that the day was a special occasion for attendees. Pediatric cancer survivors Daphne Neshay and Cody Schick participated as volunteers as well.

The 2018 Frances Foundation Softball Champs played as Team Mya, in honor of Angel Mya Lin Terry.

“Softball Commissioner Trustee Chris Heugle and his softball committee did an excellent job with the exciting tournament won by Team Mya, who defeated the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department team in the championship game,” said Heugle. “Thanks to all the teams and players.” Some of the other teams that participated included Holmdel Police, Howell Police Department, Union Beach Fire Department, Centerville Fire Department, IFF, Vonage, Access Systems, and teams playing in honor of Warriors and Angels. Trustee Melissa Heugle captured the event’s activities in the included photos.

Far right: Frances Foundation President Bob Heugle holding granddaughter Emma is joined by Trustee Donna Woodside, Arts and Crafts volunteers, Junior Trustees Cali and Taylor Woodside and guests.

Protecting Our Nation for 75 Years Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck Celebrates Anniversary BY JEANNE WALL Publisher and Editor, TAPinto Holmdel & Colts Neck Sign-up for free daily online news for Holmdel & Colts Neck at TAPinto.net/enews.

The weather was sunny and warm, a perfect day for a grand red, white and blue 75th Anniversary celebration for Naval Weapons Station Earle (NWSE), located in Colts Neck. NWSE was established in 1943, the original name was Naval Ammunition Depot Earle. According to a press release, NWSE provided most of the ammunition and ordnance used by American troops during the Allied invasion of Normandy in WWII, and since its founding "has ensured that our armed forces have the means to take the fight to America’s enemies around the world." The station’s mainside section is located in Colts Neck and the waterfront portion is located on Sandy Hook Bay, in the Leonardo section of Middletown. The two areas are connected by a private government owned roadway. The 75th Anniversary celebration event offered the community a rare opportunity to come onto the base. Due to high security and space, the event was limited to the first 500 guests who arrived. The gates opened at noon for cars and many motorcycles to enter.

2.9 miles into the Sandy Hook Bay. Sandy Hook Bay was chosen because it featured a safe, sheltered, and nearby port where ships could take on ammunition brought in by rail from the west, and the rural area meant few local residents would be affected. Earle continued to develop after World War II, keeping pace with the changing needs of the navy. In 1974, the depot’s name was changed to Naval Weapons Station Earle. On this auspicious occasion, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders joins with the personnel and staff of NWS Earle in celebrating the 75th anniversary by proclaiming this day, June 8, 2018 to be known as: “Naval Weapons Station Earle Day” The celebration included informational booths and displays from a variety of military branches and public service organizations. One display was the contents of a time capsule that was buried 25 years prior when NWSE celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 1993. The contents of the capsule contained mementos from the NWSE 50th Anniversary celebration. A new time capsule relative to the 75th celebration was created to be buried, and planned to resurface for the 100th Anniversary. Later in the day there was a carnival held for all to enjoy with boardwalk style games, face painting, a petting zoo, inflatables, and so much more. The carnival was free to military personnel and the Department of Defense card holders. All were welcome to join in the fun.

The formal ceremony began with every United States Military branch represented. Also attending were members of Rolling Thunder, a U.S. advocacy group that seeks to bring full accountability for prisoners of war (POW’s) and those missing in action (MIA’S). There were many local, county and state officials in attendance, to honor and show gratitude to NWSE. The National Anthem was performed by the United Service Organization singers. Earle’s Commanding Officer Captain Pierre Fuller gave a welcome address and thanked all for coming to the 75th Anniversary celebration. The Colts Neck High School Junior ROTC Cadets were participants in a military drill and ceremony display. Congressman Chris Smith, provided a certification letter and a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of the 75th Anniversary of NWST. A congratulatory letter from Congressman Chris Smith was read by a member of his staff on his behalf. Freeholder Assistant Director Lillian Burry had a special proclamation prepared on behalf of the Monmouth County Freeholders that read: "This certificate is presented on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of Naval Weapons Station Earle (NWS Earle). The Naval Ammunition Depot Earle was named after Rear Admiral Ralph Earle, the chief of the Bureau of Ordnance during World War I. The depot was commissioned on December 13, 1943, and construction began on August 2, 1943. Naval Weapons Station Earle is a waterfront complex and pier which stretches

Welcome to The Table

Three Things to Avoid Blowing Up Your Life Not long ago I was sitting in a Starbucks after meeting with a client and organizing my notes and starting to put some puzzle pieces together to formulate a plan and approach for his family, when someone I’d known for a few years saw me and sat down. Our paths have crossed many times and he knows me as a finance and technology guy. At one point, he’d been in a similar place – running his own business, consulting, balancing small kids with business, happily married - but over time he’d lost his way. His marriage was failing, his business sinking, he didn’t look good. I spent an hour listening to him and hoping to bring him some encouragement which hopefully I did. As I left, I couldn’t help but think about the key differences in our lives and how much I don’t want to be where he is. As the caffeine kicked in, I thought of three things I think are imperative to avoid blowing up our lives: 1. Know Who You Are. No one lives out of his or her true identity all of the time. We make decisions that go against who we are from time to time without reminding ourselves of our values and what’s important. It’s easy to take baby steps away from how you want to live. I think it’s important to stop periodically and reflect on our core values – call it prayer, meditation, happy hour... whatever. It helps re-clarify a clear view of who we are (or want to be). Find your moral compass. Someone, somewhere or something that keeps you true to yourself, your family, yourself and others. 2. Surround Yourself with Good People. I have a good circle of friends and people that I work with who don’t pull punches when it comes to telling me

18

what’s going on. While my family, employees and clients are increasingly more comfortable being honest with me, they aren’t the only people I’m spending time with. I have deliberately sought out friendships with people who are like-minded, bold and not afraid to press into my life and my weaknesses. Accountability is key to staying on the right path. Complacency is a killer. Always look for ways of disrupting yourself and ask yourself …”What’s next?” Optimism is good, cynicism is draining, but being constructively honest with yourself, while brutal, is the elixir of growth. 3. Experiment with New Ideas, BUT Always Do The Work. I love hacks, clever shortcuts and finding new ways to do old things. But ultimately, the true test is to get the work done well (know what finished work looks like and ONLY produce finished work). Shortcuts and hacks are only valuable if our ethics stay in place and the outcome is the same or better – but don’t compromise morality. This is the crossroads of blowing up your life – bad decisions. The world is full of good ideas and opportunity, but it is those who act with morality and execute who forge forward.

Forevermark is built on the promise that each diamond must be beautiful, rare, and responsibly sourced. The Exceptional Diamond Collection represents the pinnacle of that promise, containing some of the most exquisite diamonds in the world. Every year, only a select number of Exceptional Diamonds are discovered. They are kept separate from other diamonds from the very first moment – their carat weight and singular beauty instantly marking them out as truly remarkable. Each diamond must be at least three carats – though many are much larger – and is accompanied by its own book which documents key milestones and photography of the diamond’s journey. Only select Forevermark Jewelers have been chosen to showcase the Exceptional Diamond Collection, and J.Vincent Jewelers is one of only 23 stores. An Exceptional Diamond may be purchased as a loose diamond or in a finished piece of jewelry. Come view from our Exceptional selection and see why these diamonds stand in a class of their own.

The Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) held its 43rd annual Garden Party on the evening of June 24, 2018 at the celebrated Riverside Estate on Navesink River Road in Locust. Riverside has been a treasured Monmouth County property for over a century. It was designed in 1904 by renowned architect William Welles Bosworth. Bosworth is most well-known for designing the Cambridge Campus of MIT and overseeing the restoration of the Palace of Versailles.

wide variety of silent auction items, including ‘skip the line’ privileges at a popular local restaurant, tickets to sporting events and artwork from Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol. Nicholas Dawes, expert appraiser for the PBS favorite ‘Antiques Roadshow,’ conducted spirited live bidding for several exciting treats such as a diamond necklace, access to coveted beach club membership and a day of lunch and antiques in Manhattan with Mr. Dawes himself,” shared Trustee Kathy Jones.

Nearly 400 history lovers joined members of the MCHA in this exquisite setting, as they enjoyed hors d’oeuvres passed by young volunteer servers, some representing the second generation to count the Garden Party as their first introduction to the MCHA and service to the community.

With close to 15 percent of MCHA’s operating budget raised at this event, all proceeds from the evening will benefit the mission to preserve and celebrate the history of Monmouth County for all.

As is the Garden Party tradition, two honorees were acknowledged. Trustee and MCHA past-President Suzy Post and Former Trustee and Garden Party co-Chair Daren Hutchinson. “Guests appreciated the gift of traditional commemorative fans as they leisurely sipped cocktails and mingled against the backdrop of the early 1900’s era columned manor. As the sun set over the sparkling water and the strains of the quartet A Song for You floated through the air, partygoers good-naturedly vied for a

“It was a joy to see so many friends and MCHA enthusiasts join us in recognizing Daren and Suzy for their unwavering support of the Association and their heartfelt commitment to preserving the rich legacy of Monmouth County,” said MCHA Board of Trustees President Linda Bricker. “For over three decades, the tireless efforts of Daren and Suzy have been instrumental in the growth and success of MCHA and allowed for the preservation of countless historical treasures. In addition, we are so grateful for their enthusiasm and friendship that have enhanced all the lives they have touched.”

This was a special year, in a special town, with a special purpose in bringing community together. The annual Great American Apple Pie Contest began over 11 years ago. At first, we thought let’s organize a pie “baking” contest in place of the pie “eating” contest that had been a tradition at the old Colts Neck Fair. When Charlotte Clime brought the idea to the Women’s Club of Colts Neck, they were more than happy to support her endeavors. The Women’s Club has been instrumental ever since in making sure the word gets out to inspiring bakers, and the public, securing prizes for the winners and encouraging members to attend. This year the Club agreed to change the name to Grandma Charlottes Great American Apple Pie Contest, in memory of Charlotte and her passion for this yearly event. It was once again a great success, with the judges table filling quickly with twelve volunteers. Each judge tasted the pies, one by one, and gave them scores based on appearance, taste and creativity. Thank you to these esteemed tasters, many who had been willing to taste many pies for many years in a row. Our winners were quickly discovered. Vera Santucci took First Place with her caramel apple recipe. She is a long-time entrant so this win was particularly sweet. Second Place went to Jenny Barreiro, also one of our steadfast participants. And finally, Third Place went to Addison Blumenthal, a newer participant. All bakers were Colts Neck natives and fun was had by everyone. Especially when we shared samples of all the pies with the awaiting crowd. I am proud to be part of this Colts Neck tradition and look forward to next year already!

HEART OF THE HOME KITCHENS

30 NIXON LANE, EDISON, NJ 08837 732-650-0600

TOP 3 KITCHEN DESIGN CONCEPTS THE LAYOUT This is your kitchen's overall shape. It is the arrangement of the countertop, major appliances, and storage areas in your kitchen. Your layout will dictate the work flow in your space. This floor plan creates the kitchen's work triangle - the path that you make when moving from the refrigerator, to the sink, to the range to prepare a meal. A kitchen designer can show you the work triangle in your space and which layout is best.

FUNCTIONALITY Kitchen storage is a must-have in order to keep your cabinets, drawers, and pantry in order. A messy kitchen is a kitchen that no one can enjoy! Make use of new cabinetry options - both upper and base cabinet pullouts are great advantages to a functional kitchen space. Looking for some seasonal storage? Get creative with a kitchen island or wall pantry cabinet.

LIGHTING Kitchen light fixtures create the ambiance in your space. More than just a decorative touch, fixtures fulfill a variety of needs. Pendants are perfect over bars and islands. Ceiling lights are great for overall illumination, while under cabinet lighting illuminates work spaces throughout the room. Even in the smallest of kitchens great lighting can make your kitchen feel open and inviting.

DESIGNING YOUR KITCHEN By Rachael Buck, Kitchen Expert

Do you have a master chef in the house? A beginner baker? Eight children and a puppy? Each home and every kitchen is unique, just as the family who lives there. Therefore, there is no one size fits all when it comes to kitchen design. First you'll want to figure out your objective - are you selling the house in five years or is this your dream home for generations to come? Next you'll want to choose the right company to put your trust in to accomplish this goal. A great kitchen designer is a must! Work one-onone with a kitchen designer to get every detail just right. Although this may take longer at the start of the project, it will be well-worth the extra time in the long run. Establish a budget to turn your kitchen dreams into reality and be realistic. You'd like an open concept but have a limited budget? See if taking down one wall, instead of three, can accomplish that same goal. It's important to prioritize function and allow the kitchen designer to show you all the different forms the space can become - you did hire an expert for a reason! If you're ready to design your kitchen but don't know where to start, we've got you covered. Heart of The Home Kitchens is a full service kitchen remodel company that specializes in Monmouth County kitchen remodels. We proudly do it all - cabinetry, countertops, flooring, backsplashes, custom crown molding, design and more. The Constitution of Peace, Love & Horses I declare that everyone at Peace, Love & Horses is safe, happy and accepted for who they are and feel love. Everyone has the opportunity to do the right thing and feel calm. We take care of animals and each other.

Hope for Children Foundation Brings ‘Peace, Love & Horses’ to Holmdel School District with Middletown Farm BY JEANNE WALL

The Holmdel Board of Education (BOE) accepted funding from Hope For Children Foundation (HFCF) to support participation of students from Holmdel’s W.R. Satz School (7th and 8th grades), in the nonprofit Peace, Love & Horses (PLH), Farm Academy Program, at Lucky Star Farm in Middletown. Peace, Love & Horses is a nonprofit organization, ‘dedicated to providing special individuals with an opportunity to

PLH began piloting a program with Middletown High Schools and recently due to HFCF’s gifting, Holmdel W.R. Satz School students with special needs now also have the opportunity to participate in a six-week program with PLH. This program designed to provide a structured learning experience with vocational training, barn care and horsemanship. Hope for Children Co-founder MaryBeth Walz Pritzlaff comments, “From the first time I visited Lucky Star I just knew it was a special place of healing and nurturing. I heard testimonials from parents of children with special needs who had witnessed amazing life changing experiences in the Peace, Love & Horses program. I knew this was an initiative totally in line with the mission of HFCF. You can truly feel the peace and love here as soon Dominic Tobacco (right), trustee and as you pull up to the farm. It’s a volunteer of Peace Love and Horses place where everyone has mutual with Thomas DeAngelis from Oasis respect for one another and the TLC. language spoken is love.” The origin of the Lucky Star’s Peace, Love & Horses mission began when Jacqueline’s son Dustin, who has autism, showed true comfort, happiness, and confidence, specifically when caring for farm animals. Jacqueline says, “Dustin kept saying, ‘We need our own farm,’ and we literally just followed his needs for a special place where everyone feels loved, accepted and competent.” The family knew that they had to make a huge change for their son, and the sons and daughters of so many. So, the Tobaccos sold their home and purchased the farm. Lucky Star Farm became their new home and then they founded the non-profit Peace, Love & Horses program soon after that. Their son Dustin became the operating Barn Manager. “Lucky Star Farm is our family’s home and our dream for our son--a place for him to feel accepted and competent. We are overwhelmed by the encouragement and support for our Peace Love & Horses program from other families and schools in our community and throughout the county. We are very thankful to organizations like Hope for Children Foundation who make a decision to help children whom they may never know, to experience a life changing opportunity,” says Tobacco. All of the animals at Lucky Star Farm are rescues or donations. Every animal eats organic or non-GMO feed. The horse manure is used for fertilizer. There are vegetable gardens on the property and the farm is kept as chemical free as possible using natural fly sprays, no chemical fertilizers or weed killers. Currently, Lucky Star is serving over 60 individuals a week in the community, in small groups of six to seven at a session. Doreen Riegal says, “Peace, Love & Horses offers a special learning experience, allowing children with special needs an opportunity to learn by interacting and caring for animals. The farm offers a special recipe for learning involving hands-on and multi-sensory activities along with heavy doses of love and passion. Everyone who experiences the farm leaves feeling at peace and empowered. It is truly a special place run by special people.” TAPinto also had a chance to speak with a couple of the parents who live in Middletown and provide great testimony to the PLH program. One mom, Virna Broderick whose son is on the autism spectrum, and is an 8th grader at Thompson Middle School says, “Lucky Star Farm has been life changing to our whole family. I now manage all the volunteers here and my son volunteers and the experience here is so calm and so peaceful and my son loves and looks forward to coming to the farm every week. He knows how to care for the horses and has learned to care for the farm and the animals. He has learned all the chores and loves checking them off. He’s been coming since the fall and he gets so much out of it. We all do.” Co-founders of Hope for Children Eric Hinds with his wife and founding board member, Karen at Mix, Mingle and Jingle at Bell Works in December, 2017. They helped raise funds for the program.

school and is in the PLH six-week program said, “I am thrilled that Reece has something he is so excited about doing. He loves going to Lucky Star Farm and telling people about ‘his horse.’ I can’t thank HFCF and Holmdel Schools enough for this program. I swear I saw a positive difference in Reece after just one session at the Farm. Now he carries around pictures of the horses and before he was afraid of animals and now he loves them. Each child gets their own horse to care for and learn about. I’m so happy to see Reece loving something so much as he does Peace, Love & Horses.” The President and Co-founder of Hope for Children Foundation, Eric Hinds, comments, “Our nonprofit all volunteer organization Hope for Children Foundation is about helping the children of Monmouth County to better reach their full potential in life. It is programs like Peace, Love & Horses that make our community thrive for everyone. When our HFCF board sees something positive that will help the community, especially our youth, we make the decision and it happens quickly. I want to thank our HFCF board for identifying Lucky Star and moving the idea to a reality for so many children and their families. HFCF has also pledged funding for PLH to complete an indoor area for their students during the fall and winter seasons, so they have a heated learning room. Making great things happen is so easy with HFCF supporters and an effective HFCF board. Thank you to our HFCF supporters, you can see your donations at work with Lucky Star Farm.” TAPinto visited Lucky Star Farm recently when Hope for Children Foundation met at the Farm with members of the Holmdel Township School District, and parents of participating students from Holmdel and Middletown schools. There is a special woman in the Holmdel School District who has a deep passion and constant commitment to the needs of all children in Holmdel Schools. Her care goes beyond their school years and into care and concern for their job placement after graduation. Her name is Doreen Riegal, and she is the Transition Coordinator for Holmdel Schools. Riegal assists children with special needs transition from school to the workplace, and has implemented opportunities for them in partnership with businesses, most recently with companies in Holmdel’s Bell Works. Riegal is always looking for opportunities for children with special needs. If you have a business interested in offering internship/employment opportunities, you may contact Riegal directly at driegal@holmdelschools.org.

Susan Lonnie has 17-year-old twin boys Sean and Michael, who are severely autistic and attend PLH, through Middletown. “Our boys were never around farm animals and I thought they would be afraid. My husband and I are amazed at how our boys have embraced the animals and they love to work here, following the directions, pushing the wheelbarrows, the desire to want to do the chores, want to participate in caring for the animals. The educators were non-familiar to our boys at first and yet they were able to engage and re-direct our boys to stay on track and that is very impressive to me because they aren’t used to taking directions from unfamiliar educators. They learned to collect eggs, ‘feed the littles,’ which is feeding the smaller animals. It’s great socially for the our boys and also for the parents to meet one another. One day our boys came home from the farm with two big bags of tomatoes they had picked while at Lucky Star. I told them I wanted to make sauce and they got so excited to help. We made the sauce together as a family project, and it was really special. They were happy making the sauce from the tomatoes they picked on the farm and that learning experience of picking the tomatoes turned into an enjoyable family event.” Also visiting the farm with Holmdel and Middletown parents was President and Founder of Oasis Farms in Middletown, Mai Cleary. Oasis, founded in 2007, is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote acceptance and inclusion of autistic adults. The center has a post high school transitional program for autistic adults 18-26 who are looking to grow more independent and gain meaningful work experience on an organic farmstead community, located at the facility. Oasis has day and residential programs available to teach independent living skills. For more information on Oasis Farms, visit oasistlc.org. Lucky for Oasis, they too are recipients of funding from Hope for Children Foundation, to bring a group of their young adult members who are autistic, to experience the Peace, Love & Horses Farm Academy Program. Cleary says, “We are so thankful to Hope for Children Foundation for enabling us to have our group experience Peace, Love & Horses, The Lucky Star Farm and Oasis Farms share the same mission and it’s wonderful that Mary Beth from HFCF has brought our groups together to support one another’s programs.” The Co-founder of HFCF Mary Beth Walz Priztzlaff comments, “It’s truly a joy to bring wonderful groups of nonprofits together, all sharing the common goal of helping one another. Isn’t that why we are here? Loving, caring and nurturing one another is what it is all about.” For more information on The Lucky Star Farm or to make a donation to Peace, Love & Horses, visit luckystarfarm.org.

DI VORCE TA L K

BY PE T ER C . PA R A S, E SQ.

BACK TO SCHOOL CHILDREN OF ALL AGES will be returning to school in the next few weeks. Many high school students will soon be taking the PSAT, SAT, or even submitting college applications. In New Jersey divorced or separated parents can be required to contribute to their children’s post-high school educational expenses. That not only applies to four year college programs, but to junior colleges, trade schools, and vocational schools. Each case is fact specific, taking into account the unique circumstances of each family. Among them is the child’s aptitude. Is he a serious student? Are her grades and test scores high enough for admittance by the schools of her choice?

Also important are the family’s finances. Does the divorce, which usually spawns two households with the expenses that go along with each, have enough family income to contribute to college? And, in what proportions? Are there savings that were earmarked for college? Are there savings that were not, but can be used for college? Is financial aid available – scholarships, grants, and loans – and have the student and the parents cooperated in applying for it and submitting all required financial documents (e.g., income tax returns)? If loans are available, are they taken in the parents’ or the student’s name and who will repay those loans, regardless of whose name they’re in?

These are some of the factors to consider when the time comes to think about college. There are many more. This is one area divorced parents have in common with parents who aren’t divorced. Post-high school education is expensive. It is almost always an extraordinary expense that goes well beyond the monthly family budget. Prudent parents plan for these expenditures well in advance. Often divorced parents are at odds. They have competing interests, each trying to safeguard as much of the available income for himself or herself as possible. Cooperation is never more important than when a child’s future is at stake. College

Highlighted here are two classes given by Antonietta Picascia, who teaches a cooking class once a month, as well as a workout class for anyone 50 years and above. Senior Workout, an exercise class to be held this fall on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. runs from September to December. “The class is for anyone who feels they need a bit more instruction with their work out. We have weights and a ball and encourage you to do what you can

Cooking with Antonietta is a once-a-month cooking class held on the second Thursday of each month from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., tentatively starting on September 13. Antonietta will be starting her 14th year as the cooking instructor this fall. “We follow three recipes in each class, such as a salad, entrée, and dessert. During the first fall class, we will be utilizing those end-of-summer vegetables and making a delicious meal,” shared Antonietta. She noted that the cooking class has been welcoming many young mothers who want to learn something new, as well as the women who have been attending for many years. Again, this class offers a great chance for socializing and having fun. For specific start dates and fees on these two classes, as well as others offered by Holmdel Recreation, visit https://www.holmdeltownship-nj.com or call 732.946.2820 x 1225.

Colts Neck Power Couple Overcomes Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Sharing an Important Lifesaving Message

It only takes a few seconds for something unexpected to strike suddenly and without warning. Something that changes the course of life, in the blink of an eye. Too often, there is only a short window of time where knowledge, training, fast thinking and quick action can mean the difference between life or death. For Colts Neck couple Abbey Feiler Kober and Tom Kober, that small window was the wee early morning hours of November 1, 2017. The couple is very well known socially in Colts Neck and surrounding communities, especially for their hospitality and support with regard to many charitable organizations and important causes. They had been out the evening before, enjoying Halloween together on the town, just like any typical night out for them. Their home and property were being prepped for an upcoming charity event and the busy couple had so much to look forward to. Life was good. Things took a very unexpected turn and Abbey and Tom want to share their story and their road to recovery, to raise awareness of

34

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com

the importance of healthy lifestyle habits as well as lifesaving methods of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AED’s). Abbey says, “I fell asleep before Tommy that night and I remember awakening suddenly on November 1st, around 4:30 a.m. and finding Tommy next to me with his arms and legs in the air. He was foaming at the mouth with his eyes rolled back in his head. I immediately started screaming his name, called 911 and pulled him off the bed to the floor.” Abbey somehow at that terrifying moment went back in time over 30 years ago. Abbey says, “I remembered the basic instructions for CPR from a gym class I was in when I was a kid attending Rumson Country Day School in Rumson. From that class, I gathered the basics I remembered, and I started CPR on him. The 911 operator helped me to continue. Then, in what seemed like an eternity but was really only a few

minutes, the Colts Neck police arrived, and I had to listen for the landline phone to ring to press the button to open my electronic gate. Then, I had to run to open my front door and continue up ahead of them to continue the CPR.” Tommy had suffered sudden cardiac arrest, something different from a heart attack, and very often fatal. He had no sign of a pulse. According to the American Heart Association, “A heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked (think plumbing), while sudden cardiac arrest is when the heart malfunctions and suddenly stops beating unexpectedly (electrical). A heart attack is a ‘circulation’ problem while sudden cardiac arrest is an ‘electrical’ problem.” TAPinto spoke with the first responder on the scene, a Colts Neck Police Officer of 25 years, Officer Brian Matthews who arrived only three minutes after Abbey dialed 911. Matthews said, “It was a very intense scene. Abbey was screaming, understandably so. She was totally in action doing compressions on a very lifeless looking Tom who was laying on the floor. I immediately assessed the situation finding no breathing and no pulse. I quickly prepped him with the patches for the AED while the second officer on the scene Gabe Campan, immediately continued doing the compressions Abbey had started, as I prepared the AED and we then shocked him. Nothing happened to change his condition, so we tried again, and it was after three to four attempts that we were finally able to get a pulse. Abbey was pleading with Tom to come back. We were so fortunate to get a pulse back and First Aid arrived and all of us kept working on Tom and prepping him to get into the ambulance. Tom was very lucky and as we all know this is not always the case.” Abbey continues, “As they were loading Tom into the ambulance in front of our home he had to be shocked several more times, seven total AED shocks that evening I think. Of course they wouldn’t let me drive so I jumped in a car following the ambulance. You could tell that no one thought Tommy was going to make it. Everyone except me was really quiet. I questioned the police officer I was with on the ride over and his eyes were filled with tears... and I found out later that on

the way there they changed his condition to viable rather than the original call made of bringing in a dead on arrival (DOA). Just thinking about him being brought in as a DOA makes me shudder. We were headed to CentraState Medical Center. Our whole world was falling apart in an instant. When we got there, it was a whirlwind of activity and lifesaving techniques, getting Tommy loaded on the helicopter awaiting us to go to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital (RWJ). Tommy was in very critical condition and I didn’t know if I would ever see him alive again when we parted.” The second day at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Abbey took her first food break away from Tommy’s hospital room, and in that short window of time his heart stopped again. She ran back into the hospital room as he was being revived with CPR and an AED. Abbey says, “I went to get a quick bite to eat leaving him for the first time and he technically died again, totally flat lined with no pulse. They were working on him frantically and by some miracle, and yes I believe in those now, he made it through again.” Now he was the man who had died multiple times in the last 48 hours and there was a strong chance that he may never make it home. Abbey, her family and friends held vigil at the hospital for days and then weeks. Tommy was incubated on a ventilator and respirator for over two weeks. When Tommy could communicate he told Abbey that on day two when he coded his father who had passed came to him and told him it wasn’t his time and to go back and to fight. Abbey said, “Tommy’s father died two years ago. He had diabetes and was a double amputee. Tommy told me he saw his father, only looking younger, healthy and walking with both legs and telling him to go back and fight to live and that it wasn’t his time.” Abbey continues, “Previously, Tommy and I never really believed in a lot of what we were now experiencing. I kept thinking something beyond this earth was helping us. How did I wake up at the right time to see him dying and actually recall the CPR I learned as a child? Tommy saw his dad who was frantically telling him to go back and fight? He had died so many times and still was brought back to us. I was

very thankful and grateful and also started realizing that if all of the chain of events did not occur as they had, if one link was missing, Tommy would already be gone. The links working together from the time I woke up, started CPR, the 911 call, the Police and First Aid, CentraState Medical Center, the Advanced Life Support, Robert Wood Johnson... every vital link saved his life. I began to feel eternally grateful to the Colts Neck Police, First Aid, CentraState, Advanced Life Support, and RWJ...all of the first responders, doctors, nurses...all of the support from our family and friends. So many people together saved my husband. We are eternally grateful. I started feeling like I needed to tell everyone that I saw to make sure they take a CPR class if they haven’t already.” Recently, Abbey along with her parents and their housekeeper took a CPR class at TeamLife in Colts Neck. Abbey says, “I have an important message I need to share. I feel I need to keep telling everyone I know and meet: If you do not know CPR, please take a class and bring your family members, friends, babysitters... you never know when you can save the life of a loved one or a stranger. Those first few moments are truly life or death. Just like the TeamLife slogan says, ‘Anyone Can Be A Hero’, I agree, everyone can be.” Team Life President and Founder Jim Schatzle says, “In America, every 90 seconds someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest. That equates to about 1000 people a day, out of that 1000 people only 5% will survive. The reason for that low survival rate is that very few of them will receive CPR performed on them prior to the ambulance arriving and even less of them will have an AED applied to them. So every minute that goes by without CPR and the use of an AED you have a 10 percent less chance of survival. Average time for an ambulance to arrive in this country is 8 to 12 minutes, you can see the problem here... and the importance of someone starting CPR immediately.” The next two and a half weeks at RWJ were full of ups and downs, twists and turns for Tommy, with Abbey at his side, often just sitting next to him and staring at him, crying, hoping and praying. Finally, he was stable enough

for surgery... Tommy says, “I don’t remember much about my stay there, but I remember that I knew my best friend and the love of my life Abbey was there for me by my side through it all, and she made me feel calm. I can’t thank my doctors at RWJ enough. How do you properly thank the doctors and nurses who saved your life? I’m eternally grateful. I left RWJ with an internal defibrillator and pacemaker. The doctors are amazing. They saved my life and gave me the best care possible.” Tom is under the care of cardiologists from RWJ Barnabas Health; Dr. Ted Gutowski and Dr. Ashish Shukla. The cardiologist nurse practitioner handling the Kober case post-surgery, Heather Reenstra commented, “Tom is doing really well. We shared a lot of time going over his medication, talking with him about what happened to his body and why it happened and how to prevent the same thing from occurring again. We went over a healthy diet, his cardio rehab... He’s very lucky to be alive and very fortunate that his wife knew CPR and began the compressions when she did. He would not be alive otherwise.” TAPinto joined Tom and Abbey on a cardiologist visit and to the Cardiac Rehab Center at CentraState. Cardiologist Dr. Ted Gutowski, said, “Tom is very fortunate to be doing so well and that CPR was started on him in those critical moments.” Dr Gutowski then told everyone a brief story about a case he was just working with where his young patient only in his 30’s suffered sudden cardiac arrest. The patient was in a public place and was saved by a bystander performing CPR and administering the use of an AED with a 911 operator giving them instructions. Gutowski said that patient just went home. Abbey comments, “When Tommy was finally able to go home, I was so thankful and also very scared. We had both been through trauma. Me mentally, him both physically and mentally... I was worried I wouldn’t be able to care for him. Tommy and I are both very independent and Tom was very set in his ways. I almost lost him, I mean 36

he died! I knew what it felt like to lose ‘my everything’ and I was so scared. We were so fortunate that RWJ put us in the caring hands of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at CentraState. The team at the rehab center gave Tommy the confidence, guidance and care needed and it became a routine he looked forward to. Every session built his strength a little more. When he graduated from the program in April we both cried. I think the tears were because we had become so attached to the lovely team there but even more from deep emotional gratitude.” Tom added, “When I first started at the Cardiac Rehab Center I was a disaster and they immediately gave me hope and confidence. I cherish this place, I really do. I was desperate, they knew how to relax me and get me focused and every session I grew stronger and felt healthier. You wear a heart monitor and they can track everything from their computer screens, tracking progress every session. For me it wasn’t just about healing my heart and recovering from the surgery. It’s about a new lifestyle and the nurses in the cardiac rehab helped me immeasurably.” Tom continues, “Abbey always wants to help others but wow, I know first-hand how she reacts in a crisis situation, she sprang into action like a pro. She saved my life in those first critical minutes. I get emotional talking about it now all these months later. Tom’s eyes are filled with tears and as they roll off his cheeks he continues, “Abbey is my world and without her I wouldn’t be here. She saved me. She’s my real hero. There’s no one like Abbey. She’s always on me to take care of myself, and I complain but I know how lucky I am. She’s making sure I take all of my medications and take them on time. She’s always encouraging me to eat healthy, exercise and enjoy life and live in the moment deeply. I returned to my job as a lead master plumber for A.J. Perri and I feel like I have so much energy during work, after work, I don’t tire as easily as I did before. My new lifestyle makes me feel like I have the energy I did decades ago.”

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com

TOM AND ABBEY were married in 2012 at Eagle Oaks Golf Club, and recently had an opportunity to renew their wedding vows in a community ceremony with Colts Neck Mayor JP Bartolomeo. Tom says, “The ceremony was very casual, and the Mayor made it fun for everyone. However, I became so emotional during the ceremony holding Abbey’s hands and looking into her eyes. Everything raced through my mind; our history together, our recent battle we won, the privilege of holding her hands at that moment, and our amazing future I see. I’m filled with love for my best friend.” As for the couples’ favorite date night scenario: Abbey comments, “We both have a passion for hosting and attending a lot of charity events. We just attended the 2nd Annual ‘Fashion is Art’, a Larry Garmany Legacy Event honoring the life of Dr. Steven Berkowitz. Recently we had the privilege to give back to CentraState Medical Hospital at our Abbey Farms, hosting an event for their board members. We love lowkey time together too. A perfect date night for us is ordering food in or going out to dinner at my favorite restaurant, Bistro in Red Bank, then come home and hang out with our three dogs Dozer, Mel and Mo. We both appreciate the simple things in life and never take them for granted. Life is good again. Actually… life is great!” When TAPinto asked Abbey what she loves most about Tommy she said, “Ironically, what I have always loved most about Tommy is his big loving heart. It’s why I married him. You better believe I’m going to make sure he takes care of it!”

Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate to Host Blood Drive Please join Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate in Holmdel for a blood drive in memory of Ava Pellicone on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. The Pellicones of Middletown realized the importance of donating blood years ago when their family required numerous blood transfusions after experiencing complications with birth. The transfusions saved the lives of both Gail Pellicone and her daughter Mia. Sadly, they lost their beautiful daughter Ava, but were given the gift of extra time with her due to the generosity of those who donated blood. They realized at that time that someone, somewhere took time out of his or her day to donate blood and, in doing so, changed their lives. Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate agents will be onsite serving up Ralph’s Italian Ices, as well as holding a drawing for all who donate. The prizes will be a six-hour limo service from All Occasion Limousine or a $500 gift card to Jersey Shore Outlets, donated by Prosperity Home Mortgage. Kristin DeNicola-Vitolo, a Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate agent, said “The Holmdel Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate

Annual Sale to Benefit Women & Children Organizations

Pictured are some of the many “worker bees” who faithfully help to run the annual Clothing/Linen Sale.

Senior Citizens Group Gambles on a Good Time The Colts Neck Senior Citizens Club packed the bus in July for a trip to the Tropicana in Atlantic City, where each ‘senior’ received a $15 gambling card, voucher to Carmines, and a ticket to “Kevin & Caruso’s” Magique: the Grand Illusions – where the entertaining mixture of magic, stunning special effects and a bevy of beautiful showgirls had them thinking they were in Vegas! Another recent trip took the seniors south again, this time to Long Beach Island, where they enjoyed a performance of “Nice Work If You Can Get It” at the Surflight Theatre, and ended the day at The Engleside Restaurant sharing food and laughs. Do you know Linda Belcher?

You may have bumped into a version of her without realizing at the Colts Neck Pharmacy, or you may “see” her at the Monmouth Film Festival later this month. She’s an upbeat, and often wacky, mother of three and devoted wife to Bob Belcher. She and her family presumably live in New Jersey and run a little burger joint that often leaves them in financial trouble. Her passions include singing, dinner theater, Tom Selleck, romance novels about the sea, porcelain baby figurines, prenatal yoga, and a penchant for bursting into song. Next month, at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 17, Linda and her family will be among those honored as television’s best for the past year at a live ceremony in Los Angeles. But Linda may or may not make an appearance. Instead, sitting in her seat in the audience will be the man who provides her voice on film and shares his life with her. His name is John Roberts, and the nominated show is Bob’s Burgers on Fox. John now makes his home in Monmouth County, after being born in Brooklyn, raised in Edison, and an inhabitant of both Manhattan and LA. He’s been nominated himself for an Emmy, but this year he’s rooting for the series in which he co-stars to win its third statue for Best Animated Series. “I was hoping the show would get nominated for the Emmy’s again,” said John. “I was nominated a few years ago and it was just such a

42

crazy surprise. I didn’t expect it at all; it’s such a bucket list thing, a truly surreal experience. And then I lost to Hank Azaria, so he’s so talented it’s like, of course I lost to him. I took my mom and we had a great weekend. It was really special. Bob’s won last year and I’m hoping it will again.” Playing Linda through his voice on the show is more than a great TV job. For John, it is a part of him that came to life years ago in his stand-up routines now captured on animated film. “Bob’s is like the best thing that ever happened to me,” said John. “It was just something that came about for me. I started off with a live show where I created all these characters, and my Mom character was one, and she was really, really popular. I was able to get all these characters down in front of 30 or 40 people once a week. Then YouTube came along, and I picked the best characters from my show for my YouTube videos. This was when YouTube first started, so it was all fresh and new and got passed around a lot.” John has appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and Comedy Bang Bang, as well as having guest-voiced on Archer. He has cowritten a cable pilot with Bob Odenkirk of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, and performed on two national tours with actress and comedian Margaret Cho. He is also working on a new liveaction sitcom, Edison, with Amy Poehler and John Benjamin through Amy’s company Paper

Kite in which he stars. But what first made this funny-man famous? YouTube and his mother, Marge. John’s first viral videos, The Christmas Tree, My Son is Gay, and Jackie & Debra, earned him a broadband Emmy nod and more than 40 million combined views. His vast array of characters got him many Hollywood meetings, including one with Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels. But it was his imitation of his Brooklyn-born mother that caught the attention of Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard who turned John’s characters into Linda Belcher with her trademark red glasses. “We have several mutual friends, and someone gave Loren Bouchard my YouTube videos,” said John. “The character of Linda was created around my Mom character. I didn’t even have to audition or anything. It was the absolute best way to get a showbiz job. I hate auditioning, but I love creating and putting stuff out there. I audition because I have to for things, it’s a love/hate relationship, but it’s really a weird, unnatural process.” John performs his stand-up comedy live at various venues around the country, in addition to performing as a part of Bob’s Burgers Live. And for John it’s all about creating and performing live. Whether it be a new character for his shows or YouTube channel, writing a song, or putting together an album or TV show. “I enjoy having the freedom to work on other

projects thanks to Bob’s,” shared John. “The show is going on its ninth season, so all the pressure to make the show super successful has fallen away. So it’s really manageable. After going to LA and experiencing the vibe out there, it just made more sense to move back home and go at my own pace. Which is something I’ve always done. Bob’s is a great gift in that sense because it gives me time to work on other stuff and be creative.” Much of what John works on outside of his stand-up and characters is music. He wrote and recorded vocals on the new Blondie album, Pollinator, and has signed a publishing deal for his own music with producer Big Black Delta and the band Scissor Sisters. “I have a dance EP coming out in August called Looking,” said John. “I’m really proud of it. I’ll be going on tour and putting together a live show. And hopefully I’ll be writing some more music, maybe with Debbie Harry, we have such a great relationship in that sense. But I really want to put together a live act, it’s really exciting to do. Being on Blondie’s last album was an incredible honor, and also kind of surreal. I still don’t believe it happened. It’s a great album, such good company, so much talent on that album.” John and Debbie co-star in several of John’s videos and share a deep friendship. So much so that when Debbie was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame this past May, John was

asked to present her with the award. “I met Debbie early on with my band Optigrab. We were a little tongue in cheek, a drop of Weird Al and a little Beastie Boys, it was fun. Opti-grab is what Steve Martin invents in the movie The Jerk,” explained John. “So we had this fun, kind of downtown band, and we would go to this club SqueezeBox in New York and Debbie would go there a lot. We had our first show at a punk rock party and we got introduced, and then we went on tour and opened for Blondie. That was where our friendship kicked off and that was in 2002 or 2003.” Recently engaged, John is looking toward the future and adding children to his current threedog fur family. He wants to be more involved in local Monmouth life and make a home for his fledgling family. Asked to be a panelist at the Monmouth Film Festival this month, he is trying to do just that. “I’m going to raise my kids here, so I want to be part of these towns,” shares John. “My friend AnnMarie (Cioffi, who is co-owner of the Colts Neck Pharmacy with her husband Rob,) joined the area just a little while after I did. And I’ve been hanging out here for years with Debbie. Being raised over in Edison, this feels right for me. My sister is here, and now that my mother has moved to Florida, I have a room for her to come and stay. New York and LA were fun, but New Jersey is home.”

Beyond the Blackboard

Meet your neighbor, teacher Mandy Galante. Town where I live: Our family has lived in Little Silver for 32 years, very happily raising our three kids in this friendly community. Where I teach: Mater Dei Prep High School since 2002. Subjects I teach: A set of courses about computer technology - hardware, networking, cybersecurity and digital forensics. Or another way to say it is “how to fix a computer, how to connect, how to secure against the bad guys, and how to find the evidence on a computer.”

home mom, eventually getting certified as a Network Admin. When my local high school lost its networking teacher, they recruited me out of tech and into the classroom - and 16 years later I’m still loving every minute. What I love most about my position in education: Helping students find their path and then watching that path turn into gold for them. Cyber has opportunities for scholarships, internships, and really wellpaying jobs. So I have enjoyed being able to point students in that direction and then have them come back years later to tell me

Best tip to share with other teachers: Take a chance to breathe! Teachers care so much about their students that they often burn out, so remember to take breaks for yourself. Just like the saying “happy wife, happy life”, in schools it’s “happy teacher, happy classroom”. Best tip to share with students: Listen to your teacher, you’ll learn something! My favorite quote: The day before something becomes a breakthrough, it’s a crazy idea.

My favorite subject: Cybersecurity because that’s when the cool stuff opens up and my students really start enjoying learning every single day. To get there they have to pay their dues learning how PCs and networks work, but the payoff is huge as they hit the challenging topics, fun labs, and cool cybercontests - which they often win because of what we learn in class. What sets me apart from others doing what I do: Teachers - especially techie teachers - are a super bunch, so I don’t want to be set apart! In fact, I am working to bring more teachers into teaching cybersecurity and computer science by holding workshops and mentoring. Many teachers are intimidated by the subjects, but math, science and foreign language teachers often have a natural aptitude once I get them started in cyber. Why I chose my profession: It chose me. Out of college I worked on Wall Street, and it was one of the first industries using PCs. That started me on the techie path which I kept exploring even in my years as a stay-at-

they love what they do and they are free of student debt. Huge win for them as they start out their careers! What I find most challenging about teaching: I’m not the best teacher for every one of my students, but I really want to be. It can be hard to know that I haven’t found the right way to reach one of my students and help them achieve his or her best.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

My favorite movie: I think War Games is the best cybersecurity movie ever! My favorite food: Diet Coke, it’s my form of caffeine. Ask my students - no one wants to talk too loud until Mrs. G has her first Diet Coke in the morning. My favorite hobby outside work: Playing with my grandchild.

News from Our Schools & After-school Programs Christian Brothers Academy Lincroft, cbalincroftnj.org For the 10th time in the 15-year history of the award, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) announced that Christian Brothers Academy has won the 2018 ShopRite Cup for best non-public athletics program. It is the fourth consecutive year that the Colts have topped the standings, marking the longest consecutive streak in the history of the nonpublic division. CBA had previously won the Cup three times in a row on two different occasions (2004-2006, 2011-2013). “Through tremendous work and determination, the CBA studentathletes and coaches have once again proven to be the best athletic program in the state of New Jersey,” said Director of Athletics Vito Chiaravalloti. “I could not be more proud to be a part of this remarkable achievement. Although we are not motivated by winning awards, this symbolizes our coaches and athletes commitment to strive for excellence in all that they do and recognizes them for their countless hours of hard-work and preparation.”

The Seraphs of Mater Dei Prep are adding girls’ volleyball this fall, bringing their total number of girls sports teams to twelve. “Approximately eighty-five percent (85%) of the student body participates in shore conference athletics. With another incoming class exceeding our targets, it is natural to respond to increasing enrollment and expressed interest by adding this popular sport.” said President Don Galante. “Extracurricular activities like sports, dance, music, and drama are important in developing self-confidence, team work and problem solving and being humble in victory and graceful in defeat,” Galante added. In addition to the five new Mater Dei Institutes, Chinese and Sign Language have been added as course offerings. The high school also welcomes Debra J. Serafin as its new principal as of August 1. Serafin brings a diverse and accomplished career to her role as principal. She received a Bachelor of Science in education from Rutgers University and an MBA from Monmouth University.

RCDS Welcomes Tracey Wetmore, New Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management

Back to School Cell-utions By Hope Daniels

A

ll parents want to provide support and safety for their children. So, when my daughter asked me to buy her a cell phone for her first day of middle school, my belief system was challenged. Yes, knowing she had a phone would give me relief knowing she could always call me if ever in danger, BUT these days if children mishandle their cell phones it can lead them directly into danger. I knew I had to do my research before I said yes or no and had to reach my own decision without the influence from parental peer pressure, social media or FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). From educating myself on setting up private accounts to dealing with potential bullying to how to stay plugged in to her life I came up with what I like to call, “The Three Cell-utions” to dealing with this phone puzzle. Own Responsibility: I always knew there would be a time she would want a phone, but I figured I would be able to delay the conversation just like my husband does every time I talk about

buying a Porsche. Somehow, I figured the decision would be made for me based upon her age. She can’t drive until she is 17. She can’t vote until 18 and can’t legally have a drink until 21, but there is no age requirement when it comes to using a phone. As a matter of fact, an article published in USA Today had this to report. “Kids are getting their first smartphone at younger ages. A 2016 study from research firm Influence Central found the average age for getting a first smartphone is 10.3 years old, down from 12 in 2012.” Gulp! My daughter isn’t too far away from double digits. But maybe instead of focusing on age I need to focus on her maturity level. As she gets older she has proven to me to be a responsible child with common sense and street smarts. If she continues to stay on this path then maybe a phone shouldn’t be too far behind. Treat With Respect: Kids can easily test their limits, but should also know when to call it quits. Owning a phone should be considered a reward for good behavior, good values and good decisions most of the time. If a child continuously shows a lack of respect for his or her belongings, misbehaves in social settings and doesn’t understand the gravity of hurtful language then maybe he or she is not prepared

The Rumson Country Day School (RCDS) is pleased to announce that Tracey Wetmore has been named the Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management at RCDS. Wetmore began her new role on August 1 and will be responsible for overseeing all admissions activities of the school — develop longterm goals and policies and implement strategies to attract and welcome new RCDS families. “We are delighted that Mrs. Wetmore has accepted the position of Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management,” said Head of School Jayne Geiger. “She understands firsthand the benefits of an independent school education. Not only is she extremely experienced in admissions, she is also highly regarded in the field. Her regard for an excellent educational experience and passion for building lasting relationships supports the mission of The Rumson Country Day School and ensures that she will be an exceptional addition to RCDS.” Wetmore comes to RCDS with an extensive understanding of independent school education and administration. She graduated from The Peddie School in Mercer County and has a degree from Lafayette College in English and Psychology. Upon graduating she accepted her first teaching position at the Millbrook School in New York, where she taught English, was an advisor and eventually accepted the position of Admissions Associate. After moving to New Jersey, Tracey worked at the Morristown Beard School as the Associate Director of Admissions until she rose to Director of Admissions. She also served one year as Interim Director of the Upper School before relocating to Monmouth County. Wetmore cites her time as a student at the Peddie School as her initial inspiration to work in independent school education. “I am eager to join the RCDS community,” Wetmore said. “My educational experience at an independent school changed the trajectory of my life. I feel compelled to be a part of a community that will give that transformative experience to other children. The core values of RCDS and the school’s commitment to academic excellence while educating the whole child resonated with me. I am excited to work closely with the internal advancement team and serve RCDS as its new Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management.” Wetmore recently served as President of the Education Foundation of Little Silver and will join the Peddie Board of Trustees in the fall. She lives in Little Silver with her husband and three children who are active in athletics and in the community. Make Reasonable Rules: I hate to admit this, but my little girl is growing up and I’m having a difficult time not micromanaging and speaking to her like she is still a baby. I just started working on not quizzing her if she has to go to the bathroom. However, I still need to learn how to manage her screen time and navigate the always-changing social media trends. But that’s my problem not hers. If I continue to stay educated and involved, then the rules we set together will be a reasonable request to follow. No matter what decision is made in the end, I know she will be safe.

Trinity Hall Breaks Ground on New School Building Addition Trinity Hall, an all-girls college preparatory high school, began construction on a 20,000 square foot addition to the existing school building on Corregidor Road in Tinton Falls. The campus project, collaboratively designed by Trinity Hall’s founding board of trustees, the board construction committee and Studio Hillier of Princeton, built by Sweetwater Construction of Cranbury with sitework by The Earle Companies of Wall, will double the square footage of the current building, formerly the Childhood Development Center on the decommissioned Fort Monmouth Army base. The school opened in 2013 with 30 ninth-grade students and has grown to a student population of approximately 250 students for the 2018-2019 school year. Trinity Hall’s board of trustees knew they would need to build in order to accommodate the growing student body and made fundraising for the capital campaign a high priority since moving to Tinton Falls from the temporary campus in Leonardo used in the school’s earliest years. The new addition is on track to be completed later in 2018. “Opening the school in 2013 was a triumph of teamwork and the teamwork continues,” said Mairead Clifford, Trinity Hall board secretary, co-founder and co-chair of the construction committee. “Countless hours have been spent developing this project, with so many individuals and agencies working together to make it happen. Bob Egan, my co-chair and fellow board member, and I are extremely grateful to work with such committed and focused people, in partnership with the Borough of Tinton Falls. Bob’s generous contributions have been invaluable due to his experience as the president and founder of Statewide Conditioning Inc. Watching the construction progress and the campus transformation is just incredible.” “Our growth over the past five years has proven that we are filling a void that has existed for a long time,” said Victoria Gmelich, Trinity Hall board chair and co-founder. “It is with great pride that we are doubling the

Our students are well-rounded and independent, because we give them the tools they need to succeed as individuals, inlcuding a formal and challenging academic curriculum, the latest technological resources, creative self-assessment strategies, and most importantly, love and understanding through prayer and the teachings of Jesus. We have certainly come a long way from our days at Croydon Hall in Leonardo.” “We are excited Trinity Hall will have more space to meet the academic needs of our growing student body from Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean counties,” said Mary Sciarrillo, Head of School. “The breadth of our academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs give each student the opportunity to develop completely and fully into her best self. Trinity Hall students are the leaders of tomorrow.” Trinity Hall, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), is an independent all-girls college preparatory high school, educating and empowering young women in the Catholic tradition. I love teaching and forming beginning students, and I try to instill in them every day a love of learning and a love of God.” Graduates of the Holy Cross School Class of 2018 were accepted to the best high schools in Monmouth County, including Christian Brothers Academy, Trinity Hall, Marine Academy of Science and Technology, (M.A.S.T.), Communications High School; and the Colts Neck High School Law and Public Service Academy. Additional honors included a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Mater Dei Prep, a four-year, partial tuition scholarship to Red Bank Catholic, and a Merit Award from Trinity Hall. LoriAnn and Frank Nolan say of their daughter Orianna’s education, “Holy Cross has helped prepare our oldest daughter to get into M.A.S.T. It has been challenging academically for both our girls, but we see it paying off.” Marie and William Bertsch say of daughter Elizabeth’s full-tuition scholarship to Mater Dei Prep, “We are so very proud of Elizabeth, her hard work and determination. We are truly blessed and want to thank Holy Cross School for the excellent education she has received over the past nine years and for the outstanding faculty and staff that have given Elizabeth the best education.” For more information, or to schedule a personal tour, please visit holycrossschoolrumson.org or call 732842-0348. Oak Hill Academy Class of 2018 Accepted to Attend Top Schools In June, the Class of 2018 graduated from Oak Hill Academy at the annual graduation ceremony held in the Scire Student Activities Center. The guest speaker, Mr. Dave Calloway, is a Monmouth University alum and member of the Athletic Hall of Fame (Men’s Basketball Player & Coach). He spoke about how the students have been prepared for the future during their time at Oak Hill and of all the wonderful opportunities in front of them. This was certainly true based on the number of acceptances and choices the Class of 2018 had after a very productive and fulfilling school year. With a graduating class of 43, Oak Hill Academy graduates will be going to over 15 different high schools! This class was accepted into many different high schools, so there were some choices to be made. Oak Hill had 12 acceptances to the very prestigious County Vocational Programs including six to High Technology (the #1 Ranked STEM school by US News & World Report), and Biotechnology, Allied Health, and M.A.S.T., and another six to the Freehold Regional Specialized Programs such as Law & Public Service, Culinary & Hospitality Management, and Science & Engineering; Red Bank Regional Academies accepted six students to the Engineering, Finance, Information Technology and Visual and Performing Arts programs. The school’s largest acceptances were to the parochial schools in the area and that totaled 38! Finally, in addition to the public school districts, students earned the privilege to attend the following private schools: Lawrenceville, Phillips Andover Academy, Peddie, Pingry, Rutgers Prep, Princeton Day School, Blair Academy, the Hun School of Princeton, as well as the Ranney School. Congratulations to all these fine graduates!

Slide Into the School Year with Ease

S

eptember comes in hot with its dizzying array of back to school events, practices, homework, and games. Not to mention the ubiquitous requests of parents to volunteer for school parties, donate to fundraisers, and the return of making lunch. Every. Day. Calling it a busy time of year is an understatement. Ironically, the conversations among parents about next year’s activities start in the summer over downtime at the beach. Chatter about this travel soccer team or that new dance studio fill the air as the hypothetical calendars are filled and plans made for each child. Some would argue that the priority for kids during this time should be about acclimating their minds (and bodies) to the school schedule. After a summer of chilling out out by the beach, late bedtimes and wakeups, it can take kids a minute to get back on track. Besides overscheduling being counterproductive to a child’s personal development, it can also hamper grades. Low-pressure activities are a good way to start off the year, especially for younger children. In fact, there are plenty of arguments that say kids need a whole lot more down

60

time to just play in an unstructured environment. Eatontown children’s therapist Christian Bellissimo, MSW, LCSW, RPT has strong opinions on the topic. He explains, “While there are a number of reasons mental health professionals advise against overscheduling children, the greatest concern to me as a play therapist is that it reduces opportunities for free, unstructured play with parents and other children. Unstructured play fosters creativity, problem solving, cognitive development, and the development of social skills. Further, when parents engage in free play with their child, the attachment relationship is strengthened. No structured activity can replace that, particularly for younger children.” Parents with the very best intentions try to expose their children to a variety of sports and extra-curriculars to see what will stick. Children have different thresholds for what is too much; and it’s important to take your cues from them. Research for both sides of the argument can be found so parents can be left feeling confused and torn over what is right. In the end it’s all about balance and watching your children closely for cues. Pay attention to what they are is passionate about and how they spend their “free” time. What

are they doing when they don’t have to be somewhere? Are they outside playing baseball or drawing indoors? The answer could be all you need to know. Alex Skove, a Rumson mom of four who is the CEO and Co-Founder of her own business, KidGooRoo, has this to say on the topic, “When the kids are young, it’s a pretty easy balance. Activities are fairly limited in terms of time commitment, meeting once or twice per week. As they get older, not only do the after-school activity commitments increase, but also school becomes significantly more intense. That’s when parents have to step in and help make the hard decisions. As my kids have gotten older, I’ve tried to listen to them and be flexible. My daughter has asked to take 17 hours of dance a week this school year. I’ve registered her for those classes, but only after she agreed to reassess two weeks into the new schedule. We don’t know how much work the new school year will bring and if she can handle school plus dance without becoming a self-contained stress ball, then GREAT. But if not, we’re going to be dropping some dance.” For working parents, the struggle is real. Needing to drive the kids to a myriad of activities leaves little time for decompressing from their own stressful day. Children learn what they live so if the environment is stressful and in a constant state of panic about being on time, that’s bound to have a negative impact on them. Additionally, every family has its non-negotiable’s, those things they are not willing to sacrifice whether it is family dinner or quality time reading together before bed. If the schedule is starting to interfere with those activities, then it may be time to reset and make necessary adjustments. However, some families may be on a different track and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Grabbing a quick bite in the car and calling it dinner is normal. The point is, everyone’s normal is different. Find your family’s version and stay true to it.

PTO - Yes! Or PTO - No? By Hope Daniels A good night’s sleep – a healthy breakfast and clean underwear. Those are the three bullet points I aim for to ensure my kids will have the best day when they return to the classroom. However, this laid-back approach is rarely used behind-thescenes when dealing with my own mental transition from summer to school. Secretly, I dwell on my own mommy issues like, “Did I buy them all the right desk supplies?” “Did I get enough pictures of them on their first day?” “Should I email the teacher to alert him my daughter received my bad sense of direction gene and confirm she found the correct homeroom?” And, by the way “Do I really want to join the PTO?” Suddenly, shadows of guilt and uncertainty can cloud a confident mommy’s judgment. We’ve all read and seen comic relief about this very passionate parent group, the PTO. The movie, Bad Moms comes to mind and after weighing the pros and cons – the final decision becomes the length of a college thesis. Will my valuable volunteer hours be looked upon as a helpful donation or selfdenigration? Becoming part of a new committee for an adult can be as intimidating as entering a new school or grade for a young student. Once put into perspective, it’s obvious why our children may deal with some stress when taking their first steps in the hallways. But I’ve learned choosing how you want to represent yourself and your child doesn’t have to be so complicated. Whether you are a stay-at-home dad, working mom, Mr. Perfect or Mrs. Mistakeshere are some helpful tips that can help you form a position on becoming a member of the PTO.

62

Do You Have the Extra Time? We are all busy! But, contrary to what many believe, just an hour or less of volunteer service is critical to improving the school landscape. Moms or Dads DO NOT need to sign their lives away once they become members. Offering a hand whenever free should be good enough.

Are You More of a Follower Than a Leader? Guess what, it doesn’t matter which category you fall into. If you are more comfortable delegating responsibility and running the show, then you may want to seek a position on the board or chair a specific event. However, if you prefer to stay in the background, signing up for set up or clean-up crew still keeps you involved in your child’s affairs and an active member in the group.

Have a Special Skill? Don’t keep your talent a top secret. Good at sales? Offer to make some calls to businesses for sponsorships. A tech wiz? Coach others on how to use the PTO site or help the group network through social media. An amazing baker? Home-baked products are huge money-makers for sporting events, school dances and charity events.

Want to Connect More with Your Child? Need an excuse to bond with your children without letting them know? Hook yourself up with this parent network in order to stay alert about after-school activities, meet other parents and teachers and most importantly get a few extra moments to strengthen your relationship with your kids. You never know, they may even appreciate you more now than ever for doing their laundry.

Ranney School Graduates Well-Rounded & Passion-Driven Class of 2018

R

anney School’s 84-member Class of 2018 celebrated its commencement at OceanFirst Bank Center of Monmouth University in West Long Branch in May. Twenty-seven of the seniors, known as “Ranney Lifers,” had attended the school for 10 or more years, including both the Valedictorian Ankur Govil and the Salutatorian Paul Jensen III. Next fall, the entire group will head off to attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities across the country, including Yale, Columbia, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Emory, Wake Forest, Michigan, and NYU. The Class of 2018 demonstrates how Ranney students are encouraged to discover and engage all of their unique talents and interests through robust student life programs and a nurturing learning community. For example: Varun Sikand of Colts Neck was a semifinalist in the US

64

History Bee and has an article that will be published next month in The Concord Review (Varun will be attending Yale); Carmine Mastrokostas of Tinton Falls was recognized with a Count Basie award (Carmine will be attending NYU); Michael Bussey of Wall won a “Best Senator” award in the Harvard Model Congress (Michael will be attending Bentley); Abigail Granata of Wall and Alec Taffin of Rumson both

received Scholastic Art and Writing Gold Keys (Abigail will be attending Baylor and Alec will be attending DePaul); and four seniors have signed to play athletics at the collegiate level: Abigail Boyan of Spring Lake will play soccer at Georgia; Ryan Pongrac of Freehold will play golf at Delaware; Savior Akuwovo of Jersey City will play basketball at Howard; and Maxwell Bonevento will play lacrosse at Queens University of Charlotte. Ten seniors qualified to compete in the 2018 VEX Robotics Competition. The class also raised awareness and supported multiple charitable causes, including Carlie Taurosa of Allenwood (Chapman University) founding Beneath the Surface and Charlotte Kaye of West Allenhurst (Fairfield University) founding Charlotte’s Dance for a Chance. Academically, the Class of 2018 is exceptional: Katherine Bibilouri of Englishtown is a National Merit Commended Scholar (Katherine will be attending Sciences Po-Columbia University); and 11 seniors were recognized

as AP Scholars, six as AP Scholars with Honor, and three as AP Scholars with Distinction. Among the class of 84, 56 are National Honor Society members and 17 were inducted into Cum Laude Society. “Beyond earning acceptances to many of the finest colleges and universities across the nation, what struck all of us at Ranney is how cohesive and close you came to be as a class and how much you deeply believed in the idea of service to your school and your community,” said Adam Materasso, Ranney School Dean of College Counseling. “The Class of 2018 represents the best ideal of what we hope for in our graduates – fully realized citizens, ready for whatever is next, ready to make the world a better place as they have made our school a better place.” In his commencement speech, Valedictorian Ankur Govil of Manalapan said, “Yes, it is true that this is an accomplished group of individuals, with talents and intellect that will serve as assets in college and beyond. However, these outstanding young men and women you see before you today should be most celebrated for their outstanding character and values.” “This is an exciting time of great innovation and discovery,” continued Ankur. “In this age, breakthroughs in the arts, sciences, medicine, and technology are commonplace; it seems as though the world cannot evolve fast enough to keep up. The best part of all of this is that we are about to add to it. Every graduate sitting before you today is more than capable of contributing to this wave of change.” This fall, Ankur will be studying at Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering. He served as Student Council Vice President, earned many academic accolades, and participated in the brass section of the Ranney School Band. Added Salutatorian Paul Jensen III of Colts Neck, “Be proud of your achievements but show humility when discussing them. Lead effectively but considerately. Create spectacularly but plausibly. Contribute definitively but astutely. Most of all, thank those along the way who aid you on your journey of life-fulfillment.” Paul, an accomplished musician, is a member of the Ranney School Orchestra, as well as a member of the tennis and basketball teams. Paul will be studying at the Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame this fall.

“Plant a Row” Garden Grows Fresh Produce for Monmouth County Food Pantries The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders recently visited and toured the Monmouth County Plant a Row for the Hungry Garden, which has donated 29,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food pantries since 2006. Monmouth County’s Plant a Row (PAR) garden was created by the Master Gardeners of Monmouth County and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension in 2006 in response to a national initiative by the Association for Garden Communicators, which encouraged all gardeners to dedicate a row of their garden to produce for local food banks and food pantries.

Burry. “The produce from the garden is grown by Monmouth County residents enrolled in our County’s Master Gardener program and distributed to local food pantries. The Food pantries do not usually receive donations of fresh produce so they rely heavily on what they receive from the Plant a Row garden.” The PAR garden, located Agriculture Building at 4000 Kozloski Road in Freehold, is maintained by the County’s Master Gardener program, which trains 30 adults each year to be garden experts who can provide horticultural and gardening information to the Monmouth County community.

“Monmouth County’s Plant a Row Garden is completely devoted to producing produce for local food pantries and educating the public on the needs of our community,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone. “It has been amazing to Children from Monmouth County’s Junior Master Gardener program The Freeholders were also given a see how much the garden has grown show Freeholder Director Thomas A. THE TASTE OF SUCCESS CentraState Healthcare Foundation to host event to benefit The Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center CentraState Healthcare Foundation will host a Taste of the Harvest (formerly referred to as the MS Wine Tasting – An Evening in the Vineyard) on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CentraState Medical Center, Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus, located at 901 West Main Street in Freehold. Proceeds from this event will support the Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center. The Linda E. Cardinale MS Center has grown substantially since its beginning and it is rather remarkable to think of the impact the MS Center has had on the lives of MS patients and their families in the tristate region. The MS Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive, high quality care through accurate diagnosis, education, the establishment of appropriate care plans, and individualized treatment, with a special emphasis on various support systems. Over 70 wines from around the world will be poured by the distributors of Max’s Beer Wine and Liquor along with delicious cuisine provided

by The Metropolitan Café and Great Restaurants Catering, both of Freehold. In addition, guests can upgrade to the Gordon Stillwell Tasting Room, hosted by Carol Stillwell, which offers tastings of some rare and unique wines of the Napa Valley. The event generally attracts approximately 600 people and last year raised $200,000 for the Linda E. Cardinale MS Center at CentraState. For more information, visit the Foundation at centrastatefoundation.org.

CILU Donates Tree for 20th Anniversary Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) celebrated its 20th anniversary by donating a tree to Holmdel Township. The tree, a Kousa dogwood, was recently planted in front of Town Hall and a commemorative plaque will be placed by it soon. This tree will remind all visitors to Town Hall of nature’s beauty and the importance of protecting our open space. CILU is a Holmdel-based grass-roots organization founded in 1998 to prevent rezoning in southern Holmdel which would have led to massive overdevelopment of the Swimming River Reservoir watershed. CILU members have been working since then on protecting Holmdel’s open space and preserving the quality of life that all residents enjoy. To date they have played a role in preserving more than 600 acres of open space, parks and farmland. CILU promotes informed and thoughtful land CILU Board members by the dogwood tree donated to Holmdel use, and the protection of our natural resources. To learn about CILU, visit Township. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, re-stores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. It differs from liposuction. Lipo removes fat. A tummy tuck addresses lax skin. A tummy tuck can help optimize your appearance and boost your confidence. Many people strive for a flat and toned abdomen and try to achieve this through diet and exercise. Sometimes, even at optimal weight, the belly protrudes with sagging skin. Loose skin can be caused by a variety of factors including aging, heredity, pregnancy, prior surgery or fluctuations in weight. “Every tummy tuck is tailored to the individual as every ‘body’ is different and requires a unique plan. Some patients just need a little nip and tuck. While others, require a combination of skin removal and liposuction to sculpt up from the mid-section and contour down through the thighs to produce a smoother, more natural line. It’s truly an art and the patient is the beautiful canvas,” says Dr. Samra. A tummy tuck is typically a one and done procedure as long as you maintain healthy eating habits and aren’t planning a future pregnancy. There are several types of tummy tucks ranging from mini to extended. A tummy tuck with liposuction is called a lipoabdominoplasty. A tummy tuck with liposuction and breast surgery is referred to as a mommy makeover. The national average for surgeon’s fees are around $6,000. This does not include anesthesia or operating room facilities. The procedure can take two to five hours depending upon the case. Return to work can be two to four weeks depending upon the type of job you have. When choosing a doctor to perform a tummy tuck on you, make sure you are talking with board-certified plastic surgeons. Review their before and after photos to see that their aesthetic style appeals to you. You’ll want to choose a physician that regularly per-forms abdominoplasty, so they are familiar with the procedure.
