THYROID: AN ORGAN SUPERPOWER! As the body’s “thermostat,” the thyroid gland is involved in almost every function our body uses to stay in balance. Thyroid hormones are responsible for producing energy from food, hormone production that other organ systems need to thrive, nervous system tasks, metabolizing the foods we eat, and temperature regulation. The thyroid gland is one of the body’s organ superpowers.

Made of small cavities of follicles, this butterfly-shaped organ sits just below the Adam's Apple of the neck. To stay in balance, the small cavities in the thyroid gland fill with thyroglobulin material to make the number one ingredient needed to make thyroid hormones: the amino acid tyrosine.

To effectively use tyrosine, the body has to turn iodide that is absorbed into the body to iodine. Using thyroid peroxidase (TPO) as an enzyme the body can “iodinate” or activate the iodide into iodine to bind to the tyrosine. The two biological active iodines in the body are T3 (thyroglobulin plus three iodine) or T4 (thyroglobulin plus four iodine). T4 is known as a pro hormone and is much less able to perform superpowers, whereas T3 is 300 percent more active and can truly kick butt! Visit our blog at delnegrointegrativehealth.com/blog/ to read even more on thyroid health and overall wellbeing! Robyn C. Del Negro, MD, is a board-certified physician. I was the oldest of three boys, now two. Growing up in New York City we had an escape that my parents were both lucky and adventurous enough to create for us down the Jersey Shore in a small two-bedroom house steps from the beach in Lavallette. Back then, the Garden State Parkway was two or three lanes (no local and express). I have memories of sticking my head out the un-airconditioned wood paneled station wagon grasping for a breeze sitting in traffic for hours on a hot summer Saturday like a herd of sheep pushing towards the beach as we prayed for the sight of the waves, and to get our toes in the sand. My dad was a “road less traveled” guy, and a horse person. When I say that, I mean to say an OTB/Aqueduct/Belmont kinda guy having grown up in what he always called “East NY” (picture “The Bronx Tale” in Brooklyn). On one hot traffic-ridden July day (we would head south when school ended) we ventured off the parkway and found the “road less traveled” - basically Route 34, the backway to the beach, and he would tell us we would be “looking for brown eggs”. Delicious Orchards was a mere oversized roadside stand back then, but we would stop for a cider that we all would share and even pick up a pie or doughnuts if dad were in a good mood. We would pull uninvited into farms and stables to stop and “see the horses” (which at the time annoyed us, as all my brothers and I wanted to see was the beach), and after a few visits, it was a regular side-trip. I remember driving down in the off season as the stable hands would let us know when the foals were being born, and we would take the ride “across the river to the Jersey side” without traffic for what became for me one of my fondest memories of childhood – the sight of a newborn horse taking their first steps. Years later, when I started my own family and finally had made enough money, we would buy a house here, and raise our three wonderful kids in this Shangri-La. I suppose I never felt as lucky as to when I could string all these thoughts together. As I get older and listen to those much wiser than me, I realize that throughout times in our lives we are both sheep and shepherds, followers, and leaders. Our family is our first and forever flock. Our parents shepherd us

18

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

and try to show us the way – the best they know how. As soon, we will become shepherds. In our own families, in our businesses, in our community. We desperately need shepherds in this world – in families, in companies, in our country; those that lead us and show us the way. The interesting dichotomy to me, is that we must balance being sheep and shepherd. We are all part of a larger picture and purpose, and we must show compassion for both those we lead as parents, grandparents, friends, and leaders as those in the flock rely on our shepherding. There will always be “black sheep” in our flocks. In our families, in our businesses, in our community and in our world. There is line in a song somewhere that says, “if you want to lead you have to learn how to kneel.” As we become older and wiser, we must balance our roles of shepherd and sheep taking care of our flock as we compassionately appreciate and respect the other flocks and sheep on the proverbial mountainside (trying to create a visual here). Compassion (from the Greek “with-heart”) and acceptance of others and their faults (we are all imperfect and “black sheep” on some level), is key to the flock moving forward and with purpose. We are all shepherds, regardless of our life’s job or journey as parents, grandparents, workers, business, and community leaders willing to both lead and follow. Solidifying, organizing, and moving our loved ones and purpose forward. It is the shepherd’s job to be the light, carry the lamp and make the flock feel safe and abundant - not to seek blessings, but to move forward towards blessings that will find us.

The question then becomes, as a shepherd and a sheep - what or who moves us? Who are our shepherds? Who are our sheep? Embrace them both. Protect, respect, and adore the flock, which at times is difficult. Care for them, for there is nothing more important and simpler – do it compassionately. For we are all at times both sheep and shepherd. 1002-1004 A Street, Belmar

The Jersey Shore Partnership Foundation Raised Funds for

Shore Protection Photos by Tom Zapcic Photography

The Jersey Shore Partnership Foundation kicked off its 23rd Annual Summer Celebration on June 28 at Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook with a sold-out crowd. The huge open-tent event featured shore restaurants’ favorite cuisines and seafood donated by coastal fisheries. Live music by Brian Kirk and the Jirks kept the party lively for the 600 guests. The highlight of the evening was an awards program honoring outstanding individuals/organizations that support the Partnership’s mission to preserve and protect our coastline and contribute to the economy and the quality of life at the Jersey Shore and the entire State. This year’s Dinner Chairs were Valerie and Frank Montecalvo of the Bayshore Family of Companies, a major sponsor of the event. The Partnership honored AtlantiCare with the Leadership Award for Building Healthy Communities Together; Colliers Engineering & Design with the Innovative Partnership Award for Advancement of the Engineering Industry; OceanFirst Bank with the Industry Award for Community-Focused Financial Services; and Suez with the Industry Award as a World Leader in Sustainable Resource Management. “Our shore communities generate an annual $20 billion tourism economy,” said Grace Hanlon, Event Chair and Partnership Board member. “The Summer Celebration is a strong reminder of our responsibility to protect our coast, our most valuable environmental and economic asset.”

NAPA Comes to New Jersey to Raise Funds for Local Families United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties (UWMOC) held a “Napa Comes to New Jersey” wine tasting event at Patricia’s in Holmdel in June. Napa Valley vintner Fleury Estate Winery offered a variety of exquisite wines that nearly 140 guests sampled with food provided by the host restaurant. The event raised more than $100,000 to advance United Way’s mission to bridge the gaps to education, financial stability, and health for every person in our community. Special thanks to the inaugural event’s top supporters for making it such a success: Carol Stillwell; Stillwell-Hansen Inc.; Grunin Foundation; Hackensack Meridian Health; Industrial Cooling Corp.; New Jersey Natural Gas; Count Basie Center for

the Arts; Phil and Marilyn Perricone; The Roselle Family; Dr. Sig and Candy Sattenspiel; Elizabeth Von Ziegesar; Privetera’s Florist and Landscape Nursery; and Patricia’s of Holmdel. “Napa Valley is one of my favorite places to visit, so when working with United Way on concepts for a fundraiser, this was a natural fit,” said Carol Stillwell, UWMOC Advisory Board member and CEO of Stillwell-Hansen, Inc. “We are so grateful to Patricia’s of Holmdel for accommodating us during the ever-changing planning process, and to Brian and Claudia Fleury of Fleury Estate Winery for truly bringing Napa to New Jersey by joining us to present the wine in-person. We’d also like to thank Brian Hans of Brennan’s Delicatessen for lend-

Back to School - Now What? Next month the children will return to school after a long, hot summer. Camps, vacations, and just having the children home all the time is enough for any parent to worry about. Having the children around all day, all summer, no matter their ages, is time consuming and requires your full attention. But what happens when they go back to school? You have more time to focus on the state of your marriage. Is it worth saving? Does she want to save it? Does he want to save it? What do we have to do to save it? Or, conversely, if you conclude that divorce is inevitable, what do I do now? What am I facing? Will I survive? Will the children survive? Most family lawyers will tell you that they see an increase in new clients within a month or so after Labor Day for just this reason. The children are back to school and the adults have more time to focus on their very real personal concerns. So, what should you do if the state of your marriage has you preoccupied or even causes you to lose sleep at night? The threshold Peter C. Paras

is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C.

decision to be made is whether you think the marriage is worth saving and whether your spouse agrees. If so, counselling is required because a relationship that reaches this point will require professional help if it is to have a chance of being salvaged. And, of course, this requires the unqualified commitment of both spouses to do the hard work that counselling requires. Without it, any attempt to reconcile is doomed to fail. And if you conclude that your marriage isn’t worth saving or can’t be saved, what do you do? First, don’t panic. You may need to consider individual counselling to help you get through the emotional rough spots or to navigate the bumpy stressful road ahead. Second, try to put aside emotion (easy to say, hard to do) to realistically consider life (the children’s, your spouse’s and yours) after divorce. Which parent should the children primarily live with? Think about what makes sense for them, not about an emotional need to win or to get revenge. How much support is needed? How much can be afforded? Every

need and desire can’t always be met. Two people have to live – in separate households – after the divorce. That adds expenses with generally no increase in income. These are just a few examples of the plethora of issues that intersect divorce. Divorce affects every family member and every family member’s needs must be considered when trying to reach a resolution. You’ll need the guidance of an experienced family lawyer to help you answer these questions, to make sure you haven’t forgotten important issues, and to set reasonable expectations for you. Thinking about a broken relationship and the possibility of ending a marriage is daunting. It isn’t pleasant, but ignoring it doesn’t change the fact that you are unhappy. So once the children go back to school and you have time to think – THINK! And then engage professionals to help you down the path you choose. Life is too short to live in a broken marriage. You can either work to fix it or work to end it, but ignoring it doesn’t work at all.

realm of education brings to our lives and our children, we are focusing on some extraordinary local student athletes who are using that same passion to take their skills to the national and international playing fields.

That same drive, determination, sacrifice, and hard work that has enabled Jessica to become one of the very best in her sport is something we all admire and aspire to in our own chosen endeavors. And as part of our Back to School issue, celebrating all that the

Athletics and the principles needed to make a champion have always gone hand-inhand with book learning. Whether in gym class, on the playground at recess, or on the Friday night football field, sports and academics are the two cornerstones of any school. As everyone prepares for the back to school experience, meet these student athletes who, like Jessica, are making dreams come true on the National and/or International level: Megha Ganne, Shane Panzini, Ava DeHanes, and five members of the Holmdel High School (HHS) Varsity Track Team.

hen CM last featured Jessica Springsteen in 2018, LiliAnn Paras, Director of Marketing & Features, concluded their interview by asking if we would see Jessica competing in Japan on the U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team in 2020. Already one of the best female riders in the world and a show jumping champion, Jessica answered, “I hope so!” And now in Tokyo, a year later than expected, the world watches as her lifelong dream of competing in the Olympics has become a reality. As we prepared this issue for press, we had no idea how Jessica would finish since the games are scheduled from July 23 to August 8. She could win a medal, her event could be delayed due to more COVID outbreaks, the games themselves (not having officially started) could suffer another postponement. But no matter the outcome, Jessica Springsteen of Colts Neck, a graduate of Ranney School in Rumson, is officially an Olympian.

MEGHA GANNE She smiled, signed autographs, interacted with the crowd, and cemented her future as a star in the game of golf. Megha Ganne, a rising senior at Holmdel High School, competed as an amateur in her second U.S. Women’s Open Championship this summer at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA. She ended the first day just two shots off the lead of Yuka Saso who would go on to win. Ranked #25 in the world for amateurs, Megha has accepted a place on the golf team at Stanford University where she will enroll for the fall of 2022.

CM: What is your goal for the next Open? MEGHA: To prepare as well, and make sure to enjoy myself the whole week, just like I did at the Olympic Club.

CM: How do you manage your time with CM: Megha, you had a lot of fun with the

crowd at the Open, how did it feel doing so incredibly well at such a high level event? MEGHA: It felt like a dream come true, because it’s an event I grew up watching on TV, and wished one day I could compete in, and maybe even contend in. I felt so lucky to be on that stage, and having the crowds there made the week extremely special. CM: Going into the second day you

ranked almost at the top, what was that experience like and how did you manage all that pressure? MEGHA: I was just enjoying the good golf, the course, and the environment, not really thinking too much about my positioning on the leaderboard. There was definitely a pressure I felt, but pressure is what makes everything more exciting.

practice and school? MEGHA: Managing school and golf is something I’ve been having to do since middle school, so it feels more natural to me now. But time management is definitely difficult, so having a good group of friends is really important as well as good communication with my teachers. I’m really grateful for the support I’ve received from Holmdel High School, because not a lot of players get that. CM: How did you get started in golf? MEGHA: I got started at age 7 when my

dad, Hari, brought me to a driving range. He enrolled me in the First Tee Program as well as Girls Golf.

CM: What do you most love about the

sport? What do you find most challenging? MEGHA: I love that every day is a new challenge, and you constantly get to play a new golf course with brand new condi-

tions. I find just about everything in the game of golf to be challenging, but that’s what makes it worth it for me. CM: What are you interested in outside

of golf?

MEGHA: On the rare occasion I’m not golfing, you’ll probably find me doing something outside. I love anything like biking, swimming, or playing tennis. I also make sure to spend time with my family and friends. (Megha lives in Holmdel with her father, Hari, her mother, Sudha, and her younger sister, Sirina.)

CM: Do you have a favorite quote or man-

tra?

MEGHA: Pressure is a privilege.

CM: What inspires you? MEGHA: The idea of playing against the best players in the world makes me want to work harder. Having an experience like the Women’s Open was eye opening to the possibilities I have, and how far I have to go. I just know how much I loved the feeling of contending so I’m going to do everything in my power to be there again.

SHANE PANZINI When you turn the channel to a Major League Baseball game this fall you may be watching Shane Panzini pitch for the Kansas City Royals. A member of the Red Bank Catholic (RBC) Class of 2021, the right-hander was drafted in the fourth round as the 108th overall selection. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 220 pounds, Shane’s pitch has been clocked at 98 miles-per-hour in bullpen sessions. He broke the single-season strikeout record at RBC with 115 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of 108 that was posted by his coach, Buddy Hausmann, in 1998. “Shane left our program better than when he came in,” shared Coach Hausmann. “He was a good teammate and always thought about the team first. He made all his teammates feel that they were very important and always made it about the team, not himself. He has worked really hard to get to this point to pursue his dream and now it’s becoming a reality. I’m really proud of him.” On June 16, Shane’s last time on the mound for RBC, he pitched a 14-strikeout game against Christian Brothers Academy. He was 9-0 with a 0.91 ERA and only 26 hits and 22 walks allowed in 61 2/3 innings during his senior season. Shane was named the 2021 Player of the Year by both Shore Sports Network and the Asbury Park Press, Pitcher of the Year by Shore Sports Network, and was a First Team All-State selection and named to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-American Team.

AVA DEHANES Beginning her high school career next month in Holmdel, Ava DeHanes has been honing her skills at gymnastics since the age of three. When she took a liking to the sport at a local recreational program, her parents enrolled her in gymnastics school where she learned skills on the balance beam, floor, uneven bars, and vault. Her mother came across the Elite Trampoline Academy in Middletown, and once enrolled, Ava quickly developed her love for trampoline and tumbling. Ava’s weekly training regime consists of 18 - 24 hours of hardcore training under 2021 U.S. Olympic team coach Tatiana Kovaleva, former 2012 Olympian Steven Gluckstein, and Double Mini coach Viachaslau (Slava) Marozau. Her hard work is paying off, and this year Ava qualified and was selected in two disciplines for the USAG Jr National Team and WAGC Team (World Age Group Competition) where she will travel to compete in Baku, Azerbaijan this coming November.

Ava has won gold medals at several National Championships in multiple disciplines and has traveled to compete on the international level with her first experience in St Petersburgh, Russia in 2018 at the age of 10 (turning 11). She also competed in Loule, Portugal in the 2019 Loule Cup and won her 1st international Gold Medal in the Women’s Individual Trampoline Division in her age group. Ava has aspirations of one day representing the U.S. at the Olympics. She has set her sights on the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France as her first eligible event and in 2028 in Los Angeles, CA.

HOLMDEL GIRLS’ VARSITY TRACK TEAM Five members of the Holmdel High School (HHS) Girls Varsity Track Team traveled to Hayward Field at the University of Oregon to compete in the Outdoor Nationals High School Championship: Arianna Bartholomew, attending Bryant this fall and on the track team there for jumping; Margaret “Maggie” Wojie, attending St. Joseph University this fall and on the track team there for sprints and hurdles; Alexandra “Lexie” Wojie, rising senior at HHS and on the Varsity Track Team for sprints and hurdles; Sydney Goldson, attending Columbia University this fall and on the track team there for sprints; Katie Vassilakos, rising senior at HHS and on the Varsity Track Team for sprints and javelin. In their four team relays they placed 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. Maggie also ran the 400 Hurdle. “It was an incredible privilege to end our season at Nationals,” shared Sydney. “And for the seniors, it meant being able to race together one last time. Running at Hay-

ward was truly an amazing experience for all of us, and we were proud to represent both the Holmdel Track Team and New Jersey. None of this could have happened without our parents, teammates, and coaches.” Both Katie and Lexie are also members of the HHS Varsity Soccer Team and traveled to Denver, CO for the Nationals this summer in soccer with their travel team. “I am extremely proud of what our entire program accomplished this year,” said

HHS Head Track Coach Jonathan Cole. “The trip to Nationals was an amazing crowning performance. For our three seniors, Sydney, Maggie, and Arianna, I cannot think of a better way to finish off what has already been a remarkable four years for all of them. I am so happy and excited to see what they will do at the collegiate level! And for our Katie and Lexie, I know they will tell the rest of the team about this experience, and I am sure it will inspire our next generation of athletes. Four All-American performances and four new school records! Simply incredible!”

Trinity Hall Holds Fifth Commencement Exercises

Trinity Hall celebrated the accomplishments of the class of 2021 with a graduation ceremony on campus. “The class of 2021 leaves a legacy of faith, respect, leadership, and most importantly, the ability to persevere,” remarked Mary Mahon Sciarrillo, former Head of School. The 68 members of the Trinity Hall Class of 2021 were offered admission to nearly 150 different colleges and universities. The impressive class also received more than $16 million in academic merit-based scholarships. Salutatorian Leighton Van Wagner of Monmouth Beach, who will attend the University of Michigan, opened the ceremony with a prayer. The graduates were then called to the stage to receive their diplomas ahead of speeches and recognitions. This year, two members of the graduating class were named co-valedictorians and shared remarks during the ceremony. Caitlin Ramos of Rumson, who will attend Stanford University, challenged her classmates to “appreciate the little moments, because they are what make life truly special. Enjoy every smile, every laugh,

every small victory, and never take life too seriously. Go out and be a light to the world, using the skills and values that Trinity Hall has instilled within every one of us since day one.” Charlotte Walsh of Fair Haven, who will attend Princeton University, recalled memories that the graduates have shared since their first days together. “The knowledge and experience that we’ve gained at Trinity Hall are no doubt thanks to the dedicated teachers and college counselors with whom we have formed strong relationships. Over the last four years, we have had the blessing...of learning a lot.” The ceremony concluded with the presentation of Trinity Hall’s fifth Founders Award to retiring head of school Mrs. Sciarrillo in appreciation of her service to and impact on the community. The Founders Award serves to recognize members of the Trinity Hall community whose commitment to the success of Trinity Hall mirrors the dedication of the founders – Mairead and Sean Clifford and Victoria and Justin Gmelich.

Trinity Hall Welcomes Mary Kate Blaine as Second Head of School Mary Kate Blaine began her tenure on July 1 as the second head of school for Trinity Hall, an independent, all-girls college preparatory school. Blaine was appointed by the Trinity Hall Board of Trustees in December 2020 after a comprehensive national search conducted over the course of sixteen months with the support of Wickenden Associates, a leading national education-focused executive search firm. The search effort was led by Miriam Tort, board of trustees vice chair, and involved the entire school community. Blaine succeeds Mary R. Mahon Sciarrillo, founding head of school, who retired in June. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to join this remarkable community at this exciting time,” said Blaine. “I especially look forward to meeting our studentst, hearing what they love most about Trinity Hall, and helping them grow as young women rooted in faith who are unafraid to question and learn, collaborate and lead.” Blaine served as the principal at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, an all-girls Catholic high school in Washington, D.C., from 2013 until taking office at Trinity Hall. She previously held the role of chief of staff to the superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of New York. Blaine began her career in education as a social studies teacher at the Notre Dame School of Manhattan, an all-girls Catholic high school in New York City, where she later served as social studies department chair and director of curriculum development. She earned her B.A. in American studies from Fordham University and holds two graduate degrees from Columbia University, an Ed.M. in private school leadership and an M.A. in history and education.

Lily Shapiro Commits to the University of North Carolina

Following a junior campaign in which Lily Shapiro dominated the distance running field in each of the fall, winter, and spring seasons, the Colts Neck standout has chosen the University of North Carolina as her intended college at the NCAA level starting in the fall of 2022. Visiting the Chapel Hill campus on a road trip with her middle school travel soccer team, Shapiro said she envisioned a future at the university, but it wasn’t until her freshman year at Colts Neck and her surprising prowess for middle and long-distance track races that a collegiate career with the Tarheels began to take shape. “I played competitive soccer into my freshman year of high school and decided to run indoor track as a way to maintain and improve my fitness, and I just fell in love with it,” Shapiro said. “I only really started running the summer before my sophomore year and as I improved, University of North Carolina started to seem more and more like a possibility for me.” In Shapiro, the Tarheels have received a commitment from one of the most coveted recruits in the country, after she became the first female in New Jersey state history to run better than 2:10 in the 800-meter event, and below 4:50 in the 1600. “I’m excited to work toward the goals I’ve set for the immediate future and those I have at the collegiate level,” Shapiro said. “I’m excited to someday be competing for national championships. I love what the (University of North Carolina) coaches are doing. I trust them and their plan and want to be part of that atmosphere and team culture.” By Jeanne Wall Publisher and Editor, TAPinto Holmdel, Colts Neck & Middletown Sign-up for free daily online news for Holmdel & Colts Neck at TAPinto.net/enews.

In May, Shapiro clocked the fastest outdoor 1600-meter time on record in the state of New Jersey, crossing the line in 4:40.15 at the Holmdel Twilight’s Royal Rumble event. At the time, it was the second fastest mark in the nation, and a state record previously held by Tenafly High School star Josette Norris, who registered a 4:41.16 at the 2013 Meet of Champions. After pacing the Cougars to a sectional cross-country championship in the fall with a first place finish, adding an individual 1600 title at the winter indoor Shore Conference meet, and capturing multiple individual gold medals in the spring at the County, Sectional and Group Championship events, Shapiro capped her stellar year with 2:13.05 in the 800-meter event at the Meet of Champions. The victory was a crowning moment in her racing career but served as a redemption following a setback in the 1600, where Shapiro settled for second behind Westfield High School senior Katie Hamilton by a margin of less than a second. “I think, even after all the success I’ve experienced, I felt the pressure. Katie ran an incredible race, but I was upset about it. I felt like it was there for me to win and it slipped away,” Shaprio said. “But later on, an opportunity to run the 800 presented itself; an opportunity to turn tears into motivation. It was chance to prove myself, that I did belong racing at that level. It was a tactical race that came down to the last 100 (meters), and I pulled it out.” With another year still to race with Colts Neck, Shapiro said her second place finish will be a driving factor in her training, for both her senior season and beyond. “The ultimate goal is to keep pushing myself, continue to get better, and be part of a great team,” shared Shapiro. “I’m excited for what the future holds at the next level, but there’s still work to be done.”

Oak Hill Academy Class of 2021 to Attend Top Schools In June, the Class of 2021 graduated from Oak Hill Academy (OHA) at the annual graduation ceremony held on Panetti Field. Dr. Patrick Leahy, President of Monmouth University, was the guest speaker whose message of “Be Your Own Person” resonated with graduates and families alike. Oak Hill Academy prides itself on the preparation of its graduates for not only high school and college, but also the ever-changing landscape and challenges of their lives ahead. With a graduating class of 25, Oak Hill Academy graduates will be going to 13 different high schools. Oak Hill had 7 acceptances into the very prestigious County Vocational Programs including 1 into High Technology (the #1 Ranked STEM school by US News & World Report), as well as Biotechnology, Allied Health, Communications, and M.A.S.T. Similarly many received acceptance into the Freehold Regional Specialized Programs such as Law & Public Service, Business, and Culinary and Hospitality Management. The school’s largest acceptances were to the parochial schools in the area and that totaled 16. Finally, in addition to their public school districts, students earned the privilege to attend the following private schools: The Peddie School, The Hun School of Princeton, St. Edwards, St. Thomas Moore, as well as the Ranney School. CBA Graduate Andrew Liskowitz Participates in U.S. Olympic Trials Andrew Liskowitz, a 2015 CBA graduate, traveled to Eugene, Oregon in early June to participate in the Olympic Trials in track & field for men’s shot put. He qualified in the spring of 2019 in an event at the University of Michigan, where he became a sixtime All American. Liskowitz had hit the Olympic standard, which is just over 69 feet, prior to arriving in Oregon. This gave him an advantage because qualifiers who have already hit the Olympic standard need only to finish in the top-three in the Trials, rather than hitting a certain distance throw. Liskowitz easily advanced from the preliminary round to the final round, throwing 20.2 meters. “Ironically, I technically qualified for the Olympics, but seeing as the U.S. is so competitive, you still need to get top three among those Olympic standard throwers,” he said. “All seven of us were really talented, so it was a tough competition.” Ultimately, Liskowitz fell just short of qualifying for the Olympic Games, throwing 20.9 meters in the finals which was good for sixth place. The third-place finisher threw just one meter more than he did, evidencing how tight the competition was. Liskowitz does not rule out trying to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. As for his efforts at the recent Trials, he knows he put forth his best among world-class competition. “Going into the final round, I reminded myself about all the work I had put in up to that point and told myself to leave it all out there. The more I competed at the highest level, the more respect I gained for all these talented throwers. It was an amazing experience.”

Matt’s leadership skills were particularly impressive given the challenges presented by the Coronavirus pandemic over the last year,” said School Board President Vicky Flynn following the board vote. “He brings a new level of energy and competence to this position and we are confident that Mr. Kukoda will continue to meet our high expectations.” Interim Superintendent Lee Seitz reviewed resumes of dozens of interested candidates for this position, but was continually drawn back to Mr. Kukoda’s integrity, intelligence and energy, and his established reputation as a leader within the Holmdel school community who knows and is respected by our students, staff, and community. “I’ve hired dozens of principals over the years, and rarely do you see someone so prepared to take the next step in his or her career,” said Dr. Seitz. “His strong grasp of educational issues, his experience working in Holmdel, and his willingness to make tough decisions made Matt the right candidate to lead the high school into its next half century of existence.” “I’m excited to have this opportunity to give back to the Holmdel School community in a meaningful way, as principal of our high school,” said Matt Kukoda. “I thank the Board for their faith and confidence in my ability to lead this school, especially during this critical time as we emerge from this pandemic. I look forward to getting to work immediately and to start preparing our school for a successful 2021-22 school year.”

Forever CBA Construction Begins, Goal Raised to $14 Million

With summer construction beginning on multiple facilities, the Forever CBA: Securing Our Mission capital campaign has more big news. The campaign’s goal has been raised from $12 million to $14 million as enthusiasm from CBA supporters remains high. The Forever CBA campaign identified two areas for fundraising: campus facilities and school endowment. To date, the campaign has raised more than $11.6 million towards that $14 million goal. “The response to the Forever CBA capital campaign has been overwhelmingly positive,” said campaign chairman Don Norkus ’67. “Our parents, alumni, and friends can see the important nature of the campaign, upgrading the campus and adding to our endowment. While our goal was originally $12 million, we understood that the need was greater.” With the proposed facilities, the Academy has always made it a priority to continually upgrade the campus in order to match CBA’s academic and athletic prowess. In fact, multiple construction projects started immediately after the school year concluded. The first project to get underway is the relocation of soccer and lacrosse fields to the front of campus. In place of the former track & field, the new complex will be visible from Newman Springs Road. Artificial turf will provide a field that can handle most weather conditions and the facility will include accessible spectator bleachers, as well as a new scoreboard and sound system. The new site of the Sheehan Track & Field Complex has been prepped behind the existing baseball field. The complex will feature an eight-lane track, a natural grass infield, the most up-to-date safety and performance technology, and accessible spectator bleachers. A new scoreboard, sound system and equipment shed will complete the facility, which will match the success of the 24-time outdoor state champions. Later this summer, the Round Barn will be demolished to make way for a rebuilt version, named after legendary running coach Tom Heath. The Sullivan Tennis Courts will undergo an expansion, including adding the O’Shea-Martin Tennis Pavilion to the facility. The additional construction will include a reimagined McKenna Hall for multipurpose academic and extracurricular use, an expanded student cafeteria, the Benilde Hall office building and more. As the campaign strengthens the CBA endowment, the school will be able to fund more student scholarships and invest in faculty development, as well as enhance service programs, extracurricular activities, and athletics. “With the help of our enthusiastic CBA community, we will reach our new goal of $14 million in the coming year and enhance the excellent Lasallian education here at the Academy,” Norkus said.
