Welcome

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

S

ummer is almost over, what a bittersweet time

– the disappointing goodbyes to the beach, pool and barbecues – children heading back to school.

Autumn is my favorite season, the

weather is just right and we all get back into the swing of things – not to mention the fall foliage, mums, pumpkins

and hay rides – Monmouth County is a gift this time of year. Late summer and early fall are the perfect back drop for outside events. Community Magazine (CM) has scouted out all these festivals, crafters’ markets, music concerts and street fairs for you to choose from on page 16 – so get out there and shop, stroll and unwind with the family, or keep it simple with a friend. Every September marks another anniversary of the September 11th attacks on our nation, this year is the 12th. It’s hard to believe it has been this long, and that day is one of those events in your life you will remember where you were and who you were with that fateful Tuesday morning in 2001. Monmouth County lost many friends that day, we must remember those who perished, and pray for peace and healing for their families. All my best,

Carolyn Burtnick

Colts Neck Twin Sisters

Embark On Charity Close To Their Hearts STORY VICKY VALET

P: E T S Y STEP B alk W / n u 5k R for EG! 2013 , 2 1 r e b Octo CNHS AM | 0 0 : 0 1

Caroline Harris (left) and Emily Harris of Colts Neck

F

or as long as they can recall, twin sisters Caroline and Emily Harris have shared everything. Clothing, memories, a secret twin language, playing in and producing music for their band Stealing Jade, vying for the coveted front seat of the car—nothing has ever been off limits for the now 17-year-old Colts Neck High School (CNHS) seniors. “There really are no words to adequately describe being a twin,” said Caroline Harris. “From birth you have explored and experienced everything with another person.” However, during the Harris girls’ freshmen year of high school, Caroline began experiencing something inexplicable and completely unique to her. She was constantly fatigued, suffered severe stomach pains, became alarmingly anemic and, despite maintaining a well-balanced diet, reached an exceedingly low protein level. By May 2010, Caroline’s health had deteriorated so much that she did not have the energy to lift an arm and brush her long hair. None of these symptoms could be explained by her severe allergy to nuts, Cold Urticaria—a rare allergy to cold temperatures—or asthma, and Caroline was referred to numerous health specialists for examinations and tests. Eventually, Dr. Jonathan E. Teitlebaum of the Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J. diagnosed her with Eosinophilic Gastritis, a gastrointestinal disease of which there are only 400 confirmed cases worldwide.

8

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Although the official diagnosis brought a sense of relief to Caroline and her family, the lack of research, treatment or cure for Eosinophilic Gastritis was concerning and has since made everyday life painful and anxiety-laden. “Eosinophilic Gastritis has made daily activities, such as walking or going out to dinner, beyond stressful. At one point, Caroline was so sick she was not even cleared to fly on an airplane,” said Emily. “While I love and will always support Caroline in any way I can, Eosinophilic Gastritis is a struggle our family deals with.” Despite the hurdles Caroline and Emily face as a consequence of Eosinophilic Gastritis, the disease’s presence in their lives has not prevented them from continuing to share experiences. In fact, in an unexpected way, it has facilitated a life-long dream: their desire to found a charity. “I have always contributed to [fundraisers and charities] and have volunteered, but I have never had a personal connection to the cause of any of them,” said Emily. “Junior year of high school rolled around, Caroline had already been diagnosed with Eosinophilic Gastritis…and it clicked. What better cause to benefit than the one sitting right next to you at the dinner table? It just made sense.” With their cause realized, the determined duo set forth and founded Step by Step: 5k Run/Walk for EG. “The fundraiser was a way for us to be directly involved in really making a difference

in finding a cure for Eosinophilic Gastritis,” said Caroline. “I did not want to find a cure just to benefit myself; I wanted to help, educate and reach out to others.” The mission of Step by Step, which will be held on October 12, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at CNHS, is to increase public awareness about the rare illness and raise funds to promote Eosinophilic Gastritis research. One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders and allocated specifically for Eosinophilic Gastritis research. According to Emily, “the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is one of the only clinics and locations that offer research for Eosinophilic Gastritis…Despite Eosinophilic Gastritis not being very well researched, it seems that this incredible medical team is willing to push past the obstacles created and find the cure.” In addition to the 5k run/walk portion of the Step by Step event, Caroline and Emily have been working to incorporate attractions such as complimentary goodie bags, food, live music, local vendors and a raffle to entertain attendees and keep the runners and walkers inspired. A variety of sponsors—including School Answers, Healy Chiropractics, ECL Fashions/Accessories, author Barbara Marro, the Red Bank Veterinarian Hospital, J. Vincent Jewelers and Mulberry Market—are assisting the Harris girls in making these attractions a reality. Although Step by Step is still a fundraiser in the works, it has received enormous support from CNHS administrators, Caroline

and Emily’s fellow National Honor Society (NHS) members and CNHS Supervisor of Extracurricular Activities Jeannette Bruno. According to Caroline, CNHS has even proposed that Step by Step become an annual school- and NHS-sponsored fundraiser. Just as CNHS is looking to expand Caroline and Emily’s charity in the years to come, the twins are seeking additional fundraising avenues for Eosinophilic Gastritis research, as well. In the spirit of the sisters’ shared enthusiasm for music, an open-mic night and concert for local bands have been discussed. Until the cause of Eosinophilic Gastritis is discovered and those living with the disease can finally receive answers, the Harris twins will undoubtedly continue to fight for their cause. Caroline, who hopes to be a physician specializing in pediatric allergy and immunology, and Emily, whose aspirations range from journalist to lawyer to musician, would like to stay close as they journey off to college so they can continue to support each other and pursue their mutual passions. “My sister and I are not afraid to go after something we want or hold dear to our hearts…Together, we are very strong and determined,” said Caroline. If you would like to register for Step by Step: 5K Run/ Walk for EG, you can go to the “quick link” online at www. raceforum.com/stepbystep. To become a sponsor of the walk, you can email stepbystep5krun@gmail.com. For more information about the Harris twins, you can visit them at stepbystep5krun.wix.com/stepbystep5k.

Come Celebrate the 10th Annual Bayonet Farm Arts and Music Festival

T

he Bayonet Farm Arts and Music Festival will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on Sunday, September 22, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., with cultural events and entertainment for the entire family to enjoy. In addition to the art events, musical performances, and activities of previous years, the festival will have many “firsts” for all ages. As in the past, there will be a Juried Art Show in the Red Barn of paintings, photographs, and ceramic works. The show will be judged by the distinguished James Yarosh of James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery, who will be joined for the first time this year by Avis H. Anderson, Executive Director and Curator of the Monmouth Museum and Cultural Center. Winning artists will receive a variety of cash prizes. An artist reception following the awards will be generously provided by Holmdel’s Dearborn Farms. Attendees will also have the unique opportunity of viewing plein air artists at work as they paint the scenic Bayonet Farm landscape. The art gallery pieces, as well as the plein air paintings, will be available for purchase. This year, in recognition of the 10-year anniversary of the festival, attendees may buy the art at a 15% discount. A coupon for the discount is available in local publications and will be provided at the festival entrance table. Very popular performers will be returning to the festival this year. They include the rhythmic salsa band, Los Mas Valientes, the talented Colts Neck Swing Band, and the foot-stomping Swampgrass Jug Band. The Holmdel Theatre Company will also be returning to present a scene from one of its upcoming local productions. New this year will be the HUCC Finn Group and a Holmdel student group, chime. A variety of special events and activities will also be available for children. The ever-popular Doodle Dude will

14

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

be returning to entertain and create art with the younger set. The Celadon Youth Group and the Goya Dance Group will also provide wonderful entertainment for the younger set, as well as adult attendees. Children will also have an opportunity to view and create art at a number of venues. They can choose from clay creations, the young artist drawing studio, mural painting, and the pottery wheel demonstration. Two new crafts this year will be paper mosaics and ribbon rhythm baton making. Finally, of special note, will be the Harding House tours of the historic home of the late, long-time resident, Laura Harding, a close friend of the late actress, Katherine Hepburn. This year there will be three separate tours, with sign-ups at the entrance table. Local violinist, Ed Beckenstein, will be playing outside the historic home before and after the tours. As you enjoy the events of the day, be sure to stop by the Food Court for lunch or a snack. Sunnyside Market and Deli will be offering a variety of specialty sandwiches, salads, snacks and desserts for purchase, or if you prefer, Holmdel Fire Company #1 will be selling hotdogs. With something for everyone, this special anniversary event should not be missed! The festival is supported by the Monmouth County Arts Council through funding from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the County Historical Commission, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/ Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts. Bayonet Farm is located at 41 Middletown Road in Holmdel. Admission is $5.00, attendees 12 and under are free, and parking is free. For more information, please visit www.bayonetfarmarts.org.

4th Annual

Walk the Walk with Kevin

Raises Funds for Middletown Resident STORY VICKY VALET

T

he fourth annual Walk the Walk with Kevin Kret fundraiser was held on Sunday, August 3, at Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) in Lincroft, N.J. In accordance with this year’s “Celebrate Life” theme, the event aimed to commemorate the life of honoree and CBA alumni Kevin Kret while raising funds to assist him on his road to recovery. On July 30, 2009, Kret—a Middletown resident studying at Villanova University—went for a casual spin on his skateboard before catching up with friends. An experienced skateboarder, he understood the importance of and consistently practiced helmet safety. On this particular morning, however, he did not sport his helmet, and when Kret’s board hit debris on the street littered from the prior evening’s storm, he lost his balance and hit his head on the pavement below. Following the accident, Kret thankfully received quick medical attention from friend and EMT technician Eric Van Schaack and the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, N.J. However, he sustained a traumatic brain injury to his brainstem and has since been in a state of minimal consciousness. Despite the severity of his diagnosis, the 23-year-old and his family have remained dedicated to Kret’s journey to regaining consciousness. According to his father, Michael Kret, “Kevin is quite unique. He injured his brainstem, but the rest of his brain is quite functional…It’s not easy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. He is a joy to us and we believe if we can keep him healthy, with God and scientific breakthroughs he will return to consciousness someday.” Walk the Walk traditionally attracts approximately 500 participants and begins at 6:00 p.m. with a walk around CBA’s

track. However, this year’s celebration began at 4:00 p.m. with carnival-style concessions, face painting, a moon bounce, music and helmet safety promotions from members of Helmets for Life and Drop Global, a New York City-based skateboarding team. These pre-walk attractions were the brainchild of co-chairs Nicole Ardito and Victoria Gemignani. “We wanted to give [the event] a fun twist with the smiley face balloons and the face painting. It gives it a happier theme,” said Gemignani. “Yes, something awful happened, but he’s still here.” Regardless of the event’s expansion, the overall mission of providing support to Kret has remained constant. Each year, participants are invited to donate to either Kevin’s Journey of Hope—which assists in covering medical expenses for equipment or therapy, such as Kret’s standing wheelchair—or the International Brain Research Foundation (IBRF) —a 501 c3 public charity which has treated Kret and involved him in clinical studies. While Kret’s journey through his disorder of consciousness has been, according to his father, “a real rollercoaster ride,” the support from Walk the Walk has assisted in facilitating important neurological breakthroughs. In reference to a recent accomplishment, Kret’s father said, “his therapist found a way for Kevin to answer yes or no questions. We are still in the process of validating his answers with the help of IBRF, but just being able to communicate in some small way is an answer to all our prayers.” This new advancement has been comforting to Ardito, as well, who noted that when asked, “Are you looking forward to the walk this week?” Kret was able to respond, “yes.” “It was very soothing to know that,” said Ardito. Although Walk the Walk is Kret’s main fundraiser, additional

events including concerts, dinners and golf outings are organized on his behalf, as well. Currently, Ardito is exploring the possibility of coordinating a Zumba-thon as an enjoyable avenue of supporting Kret and increasing awareness. “You have to make light of a situation like this,” said Ardito. “He is working as hard as he can possibly work, and that means I have to work as hard as I possibly can.” Walk the Walk’s charitable participants, volunteers and sponsors—such as Joseph Buzzanco Dentistry, Rita Heusel Photography and Sickles Market—have enabled Kret to receive the best equipment and therapy throughout his recovery. These medical aids, as well as the unconditional love and support from his family and friends, help Kret grow stronger with each passing day. “We are pursuing every avenue regarding Kevin’s recovery,” said Kret’s father. “His brother and sisters have also done their part, engaging in brain research at college and helping with his daily therapies. Ultimately, Kevin will return to us if it is God’s will. Until then, we hope and pray.”

Colts Neck Teen

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

INVITED TO PLAY ON NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM

Francesca “Frankie” Tagliaferri before she left for her trip to England.

C

olts Neck resident Francesca Tagliaferri has pursued her love of playing soccer for 11 years. Even more impressive is the fact that Frankie, as she prefers to be called, is only 14 years old. She currently plays with the club team Players Development Academy (PDA) on the U15 Arsenal team, which is an age group up from her actual age. “PDA is an amazing environment to be in, which has truly developed me into the player I am today,” she shared. Frankie was invited to her first National Team Camp in May, 2012. She explained what then led to an exciting opportunity. “Throughout the last year, I was invited to three other National Team Camps, one U14, and two U17. After my first U17 camp in July with 29 girls, I made the roster of 20 to play in England from August 19 through August 29. In England, we will have a 10-day camp with training sessions each day and two games against England’s national team.” On being chosen to play, Frankie emphasized, “This is a huge honor because most of the girls on the U17 National Team are two to two and a half years older than me!” She noted that growing up she always played up an age group or two. “I believe that helped my development tremendously. I also had great coaches and a great support system.” Frankie’s family and friends are all very proud and excited for her, and have been supportive every step of the way.

Frankie’s #1 fans and biggest supporters are her family, especially her younger brother and her cousins, who are seen in this photo with a message for her - “Achieve Your Dream Frankie, We Love You.” Clockwise starting from top is Matthew Liggio, Katie Liggio, Christina Liggio, Trey Tagliaferri (Frankie’s younger brother) and Tessa Liggio.

28

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

“We all have the passion for the game which helps us as a team play the way we do, and that’s what I want for the school team as well.”

At ages three and four, Frankie enjoyed gymnastics, soccer, and swimming, though she always loved playing soccer the most. “When it became too hard to attend all the practices, I chose soccer at the age of six. I also played softball and basketball growing up but soon had to pick one sport again, and of course I picked soccer.” Frankie said she has previously attended five sports camps located in California, Oregon, Ohio, and Connecticut. She also noted that throughout the year, National Team Scouts are present at games scouting, as well as critiquing players at camps. In September, Frankie will enter Colts Neck High School as a freshman, having attended Cedar Drive Middle School last year. As for sports in high school, she explained, “Since I have a high demand from soccer and it’s my first priority, I stopped playing basketball this year, I will hopefully run track in high school.” All of this could change due to attending the National Team Camp in England. Frankie explained, “When sports camps are held during the school year, I do miss school. If I continue with the U17’s, I will miss school in October and November to help the team qualify for the U17 World Cup Championships. The qualifying tournament will be October 30 through November 9 in Jamaica and then the World Cup will be in March in Costa Rica. So, if I keep going with this team, I will be missing school, but tutors are of course provided because the coaches know that academics come first.” The schedule Frankie will be following at camp is very demanding. “We usually train one and a half hours in the morning, then have lectures from trainers, nutritionists, meetings with the national team coaches, along with trainer treatments, then more training in the evening. And of course, we all look forward to eating after our sessions,” she said. This tough schedule and the fact that she is the youngest team member do not bother Frankie. “I have been to a couple of these camps before, and of course I am always excited to be a part of these tremendous opportunities, but I never get nervous because I am confident that I am prepared and ready to take on the challenges that are set in front of me.” When asked if she knew how long she would be traveling with the team, she answered, “I hope for a very long time!”

As for what Frankie wants to gain from this experience, she said, “I hope to bring the discipline and excitement back to my school team. At these camps, every one of these girls are disciplined in what they do, eat, drink and how they prepare for the sessions that follow. We all have the passion for the game which helps us as a team play the way we do, and that’s what I want for the school team as well.” Most importantly, how does this highly-motivated 14-yearold soccer player feel about being asked to play in such a prestigious group? “Very honored, and appreciative that I got the opportunity to show them what I can do and learn from an amazing group of the best U17 players in the nation, and best coaching staff. Just being a part of the environment they put me in is a huge honor. From the trainings, to stretching and foam rolling in between sessions, to ice baths and chocolate milk after sessions, it makes me very proud to say I am playing for my family, my team and PDA, myself, and my country.”

Congratulations Francesca Tagliaferri!

Help Lunch Break Feed the Hungry & Celebrate Their 30th Birthday at The Downtown in Red Bank

T

o kick off their October fundraising Gala and to continue celebrating 30 years of dedicated service to the community, Lunch Break is having a party at the Downtown in Red Bank, September 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and you’re invited. Bring your friends and join both the celebration and Lunch Break’s efforts to fight hunger on the home front. The evening will include drink specials and live music featuring The Haven with special guest Susan Haugenes. There is a $10 donation per person and a 50/50 raffle to raise funds for Lunch Break; the winner will be announced at the Gala on October 21, 2013. The Downtown is located at 10 West Front Street in Red Bank. Lunch Break was founded in 1983 as a soup kitchen and pantry by a group of concerned citizens who committed themselves to freely providing life’s basic necessities to community members in

need. Today, Executive Director Gwendolyn Love, her staff, and more than 2,000 volunteers continue that original commitment and so much more. In 2012, 56,487 hot meals were served; 7,624 emergency food pantry distributions went to families; and there were 8,879 distributions of clothing, including outfits for job seekers preparing for interviews and new found jobs. Lunch Break delivers daily meals to the homebound, has cooking classes for children, a summer Gardener’s Market, and a back-to-school distribution of backpacks and school supplies. There is a monthly “Dinner and a Classic Movie” night for the Boys and Girls Club; Thanksgiving and Christmas meals; special Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas food baskets; both toy distributions and and a senior gift program during the holidays; and a monthly dinner night for the community. Social service providers are hosted on site; there is an internet café for job searches and social services; and following Super Storm Sandy, Lunch Break is part of local disaster relief efforts. All this and more is free to Lunch Break guests and is accomplished with a small paid staff and the thousands of dedicated volunteers, and is supported through the generosity of residents and many organizations and businesses in the greater Red Bank area. So, join your friends at the pre-Gala party at the Downtown September 18, and mark your calendar for the October 21 Gala to be held at the Navesink County Club from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. To learn more about Lunch Break, its activities and events, go to www.lunchbreak.org. Lunch Break can also be followed on Facebook, Twitter, and can be reached at 732.747.8577 or info@lunchbreak.org.

Happy 12th Anniversary to my beautiful wife, Kerry. Every day I feel lucky to have you and the girls in my life. With Love, Bill With Love, Bill

Colts Neck businesses and local communities have also donated in many ways to help Union Beach through Operation Provide Comfort. At the recently held networking event of Colts Neck Business Association, OPC had a table and was very successful in getting donations from those in attendance. An idea of sharing a few extra Prom gowns evolved into 1200 Prom gowns when it was mentioned on Facebook. The gowns were shared

with Union Beach eighth graders, proms at Keyport High School and Red Bank Regional, as well as being taken to share in Staten Island and the Poconos. One idea helped to put a smile on the faces of many girls! An ongoing presentation for Union Beach residents has been put into place by OPC, and is called the Resilient Resident Award. First to receive the award was Jacquelyn Shipley, the police dispatcher for Union Beach. In a letter to the OPC Administrator, she described moving her pets and valuables to her parents’ home when the storm was getting closer. She then went to work and later learned that while she was fielding calls from frantic and displaced Union Beach residents, her own home and her parents’ home suffered damage from the storm. The award serves to remind people like Ms. Shipley that going above and beyond their jobs was appreciated. A current need that is at the top of the list for OPC is finding a location close to the Union Beach area for storage of flooring plywood, rebuilding supplies, and donated furniture. The size needed could be compared to the length and width of four to five garages. A facility to house the flooring, building supplies, and furniture donations waiting to be utilized is urgently needed. Anyone with any ideas of where to locate space or anyone who can offer a space, please contact the OPC Administrator as soon as possible. Future fundraising by OPC will include a fall dinner dance that is now in the planning stages.

DIVORCE TALK

PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.

DOMA Is Dead

n June 26, 2013, by a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that certain provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) were unconstitutional. Specifically, the statute’s denial of several significant federal rights to homosexual couples who were legally married in states that recognize same sex marriages was a denial of their right to equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment. Prior to the Court’s decision, same sex married couples could not file joint income tax returns. Divorced same sex couples could not claim a tax deduction for alimony paid. Joint bankruptcy petitions were also prohibited.

The Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor now makes it clear that all these federal rights apply to all married couples, whether heterosexual or homosexual. How does this decision impact New Jersey? That question currently has no answer. First, New Jersey does not recognize samesex marriages. The Supreme Court of New Jersey decided Lewis v. Harris in 2006. In that decision the Court concluded that whether New Jersey recognized same sex marriage was a decision that belonged to the legislature. The Court determined that certain state rights should apply to all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, but left it to the legislature to create the legal status and definition of those couples. In response to the decision, the legislature created civil unions which, under New Jersey state law, afforded the same rights to same sex couples as heterosexual married couples had. Do they have the same rights, however, as same sex married couples under federal law? The New Jersey legislature specifically pointed out that marriage was reserved for one man and one woman. It created civil unions for homosexual couples, granting them the same rights under state law as married couples. However, since the death of DOMA, does this

create a second class of citizens who, because they are not married under a state law, are now foreclosed from federal benefits? These questions – and many more – are currently the subject of litigation in New Jersey and other states that do not recognize same-sex marriage. Proponents of same-sex marriage argue that United States v. Windsor requires the enactment of same-sex marriage in all states. Opponents argue that it only applies to states that recognize same-sex marriage, but does not require states that do not to do so. In 2012, the New Jersey legislature passed a same-sex marriage bill, but Governor Christie vetoed it. He has vowed to do the same this year, arguing that the question of same-sex marriage should be put to a referendum and decided directly by the voters. It will be interesting to watch the issue wend its way through the legislature and the judiciary simultaneously and to see whether the outcomes are consistent. It promises to be a wild ride.

Holmdel FC Kicks Off Fall Season with Camp The 2013 Holmdel FC kicked off their Fall 2013 season with their annual Summer Camp. The camp was led by Matt Woolston (NJX), Robert Leather (Match Fit) and Malcolm Murphy (Match Fit) and it was a huge success setting all-time records with 283 players - that is a 45% and 90% increase over 2011 and 2012 attendance respectively! “We are thrilled with the continued growth and I could not be happier with the job performed by our 3 co-directors (Matt, Rob and Malcolm) before, during and after the camp.” said Colleen Cook, Holmdel FC President. The Holmdel FC offered a top quality program to all of their

campers. This year’s structure included a written curriculum set for all trainers prior to the camp and the on-site directors ensured a consistent quality throughout the camp. With daily rotation of trainers, campers were continually challenged and this structure proved to be very popular. Their home games will be held Sundays at Cross Farms and they welcome families to come out and cheer on the Holmdel FC players - opening day is September 7, 2013. For more information about Holmdel FC, visit them at www.holmdelstallions.org.

Holmdel Swim Team Holds Swim Marathon for Skin Cancer Awareness In July, Holmdel’s Swim Team continued their annual commitment to the American Cancer Society. For the past 15-years, the Holmdel Swim Team runs a swim marathon to raise money and increase awareness of skin cancer. This year’s fundraising event took place at the Holmdel Swim Club, and was a resounding success – 150 swimmers aged 6-18 completed 4,400 laps and raised $3,800. Following the marathon, swimmers enjoyed a breakfast buffet and received information from the American Cancer Society on the risks of skin cancer and how to better protect oneself from skin cancer.

Holmdel School Gave Used Sports Equipment a New Life

W.R. Satz School’s Parent Support Group “Go-Green Team” sponsored their first ever gently Used Sports Equipment drive. It was the perfect opportunity for families to clear out their closets and garages of all sports equipment that was no longer being used. It was a wonderful way to re-use such equipment rather than throwing it in the trash, which winds up in our landfills. They received a variety of sports equipment that included baseball bats, ice skates, baseball gloves, lacrosse sticks, skate boards, bike helmets and so much more. R

yan M. Singh, a Colts Neck resident, has joined an elite club that includes Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernake, and Twilight series author Stephanie Meyer. Singh has been named a winner in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Competition. The National Merit Scholarship is a prestigious award that is awarded to the top students across the country. This year’s competition for Scholarships began when approximately 1.5 million juniors took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. In September 2012, about 16,000 Semifinalists were named on a state representational basis in numbers proportional to each state’s percentage of the national total of graduating high school se-

niors. Semifinalists were the highest scoring program entrants in each state, and represented less the 1% of the nation’s seniors. To become a Finalist, each Semifinalist had to complete a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay, describing leadership positions and contributions in school and community activities, showing an outstanding academic record, and being endorsed and recommended by high school officials. Semifinalists also had to take the SAT and earn scores that confirmed their performance on the qualifying test. From the Semifinalist group, about 15,000 students were named Finalists. Only half of those Finalists were declared winners of National Merit Scholarships. Singh, a graduate of Biotechnology High School, also received a perfect score on the ACT college entrance exam. He will be attending The University of Chicago this fall.

h r o n i c nerve pain. M u s c l e Atrophy. Chronic fatigue. Depression. These are just some of the symptoms Ian Sullivan (age 38) deals with every day. Ian was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) when he was in his mid-20’s. The cause of MS is unknown, and there is no cure. The symptoms of the disease are numerous and vary from person to person. For Ian, it hit him fast and it hit him hard. Ian is housebound and has been on disability since 2007. He has lost 45 pounds since being diagnosed with MS, most of which is muscle. As time progresses, he is becoming weaker and losing more muscle mass. Traditional type physical therapy is not safe for Ian because of his lack of strength, poor balance, fatigue and chronic nerve pain. When Ian researched different types of therapy for MS, he discovered a great way to help him improve and/or maintain muscle mass, muscle function, balance and mobility – and that is the “Endless Pool”. It is a small therapy pool that provides resistance swimming, enabling the swimmer to swim in place. Since Ian cannot travel to physical therapy multiple times a week, it would be ideal for Ian to have an Endless Pool installed right in his home. With Ian unable to work, the thought of raising $30,000, the total projected cost to have the pool installed in his house and have an enclosure built around it, seemed possible, but not probable. However, Ian set up a website at www.msfight.org to try to do just that. Ian’s former classmates at St. John Vianney, through reconnecting on Facebook on their “Class of 1992” page, have been holding various fundraisers to help Ian reach his goal, such as a gift basket raffle at their 20 year reunion; auctioning paintings by a former classmate; forming “Team Ian” and running a 5K; holding a diamond earring raffle at a former classmate’s jewelry store and a Pampered Chef online fundraiser. Ian is getting closer every day to his goal, but there is still work to be done. If you would like to donate, please visit www.msfight.org and make a donation via credit card, debit card or PayPal.

T

he Ranney School Board of Trustees appointed Dr. John Griffith as Ranney School’s fourth Head of School. Dr. Griffith, former Head of School at Battle Ground Academy (BGA) in Franklin, Tennessee, assumed this responsibility on July 1.

Dr. Griffith attended Ranney School’s 49th graduation exercises and introduced himself to the Class of 2013, the school’s newest alumni. His wife, Dana, and their four-year-old daughter, Claire, recently relocated back to the Northeast and are looking forward to being closer to family and to Dr. Griffith’s New Jersey roots. “Dana and I could not be more excited about the move to a wonderful community and joining a school of the caliber of Ranney,” said Dr. Griffith. “I have been so impressed by the talented faculty, a strong administrative team, successful alumni, committed Trustees, supportive parent community, and, especially the school’s bright and engaging students.” In the spring of 2012, the Board of Trustees, led by President Jamie Price, commenced a five-month search process, which generated widespread global interest. “Dr. Griffith’s outstanding record of achievement and accomplishments combined with his superb academic preparation have made him the ideal candidate to uphold the vision for academic excellence established by our founder Russell G. Ranney, as well as the school’s mission, and embodies the perfect qualities to follow the great legacy of excellence created by Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff.” Dr. Sykoff retired as the Head of Ranney School at the end of the 2012-13 school year following a 20 year tenure. Dr. Sykoff will continue his relationship with Ranney School as Headmaster Emeritus. During his tenure at BGA, Dr. Griffith served in two different roles, first as Headmaster working with the President of the School and, for the past four years, in the traditional role of Head of School. At BGA, he managed a budget of approximately $15 million, an $8.5 million endowment, and a physical plant of 60 acres on two campuses (with total land holdings of 95 acres). He has led a capital campaign of $6

million for a visual arts center and athletic and wellness center. His programmatic accomplishments included the implementation of a new technology planning process, including redoing all campus infrastructure, movement from PC to Apple, and planning of a 1:1 iPad and MacBook K-12 program. Dr. Griffith’s passion for teaching is reflected in having been twice awarded “Most Influential Teacher” at Montgomery Bell Academy. He also taught an English Literature class at Battle Ground Academy. Dr. Griffith holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Middlebury College in English, a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in English (Modern British Literature) from Oxford University and a M.A. from Columbia University in Educational Leadership. His experience at BGA, a Kindergarten through 12th grade, coeducational day school similar to Ranney in size and structure, included campus expansion, program development, and the creation of new technologies in teaching and learning. Dr. Griffith also guided the school through two successful strategic plans. Before his role as Headmaster at BGA, Dr. Griffith’s experience was rooted in academic leadership as Upper School Head at the Miami Valley School in Dayton, Ohio. In addition to receiving the NAIS Fellowship for Aspiring Heads, National Endowment for the Humanities institutes and seminars, and a Fulbright Memorial Fund Fellowship, Dr. Griffith was selected for the Klingenstein Heads of Schools program for 2013. According to Mr. Price, “Dr. Griffith has a track record in creating environments that help young people flourish – in academics, the arts, and athletics. His own character and values are aligned with our school’s mission, and he has the desire to pursue our firm commitment to excellence.”

any people are often surprised when they first learn what I do for a living, I treat cancer in pets. Some of the more common comments I get are, “How many years did you have to go to school to do that?” and “What school did you go to?” Those are the easy questions. The harder questions are “People treat dogs and cats for cancer?” and “It must be a very depressing job?” The fact of the matter is dogs and cats (as well as many other livestock species) often receive similar healthcare to our own. When the family dog or cat gets sick, they are brought to your family veterinarian to see what is wrong. When your family veterinarian has a concern that something more serious may be the cause for your pet’s problems, they are referred to someone like me. In general, I offer many of the same treatment options to pets that are used to treat people with cancer. I use chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapeutics and immunotherapy to treat my patients for a wide variety of cancers. I go into each consultation with a new patient asking myself what I can offer to my new clients that will help their pet but still maintain the highest quality of life for the longest period of time. With that mantra in mind, sometimes I do not treat pets as aggressively as you or I would be treated for cancer. This is a choice made by the family of a patient in consultation with the doctor. While my patients are treated with many of the same chemotherapy drugs that people receive, our treatment protocols are adjusted such that we can treat the cancer but at the same time minimize potential side effects to your pet. The more common potential side effects of chemotherapy in pets include nausea, diarrhea and suppression of the immune system. These are only potential side effects and occur in a minority of patients. Often times we will treat your pet prophylactically to prevent these side effects from having the potential to occur in the first place. Some of the common side effects that are seen in people, such as hair loss, do not even occur in your pets. At the end of the day, our primary focus is on maintaining a good quality of life. So when people ask me those questions, yes; pets receive treatment for cancer on a routine basis. As to whether that job is depressing, some may think so. However, when you approach a job like mine from the perspective of trying to offer hope to families that are devastated with a cancer diagnosis in their family member, it can be a very rewarding experience.

Monmouth Gives Connects Foodies With Their Favorite Neighborhood Restaurants While Helping Local Charities

ntrepreneur, Gina Carlton, has developed an innovative economically driven program to help the restaurants in the community and local charities with her new website, Monmouth Gives. Over the past year, Carlton started to realize charities needed to get creative with their fundraising efforts. As volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters, Carlton could always count on the local restaurants to donate food for fundraisers and area events. “Restaurants are always so supportive of local charities. I was looking for a way to reciprocate. I wanted an outlet that was a thank you for their continued support” Carlton states. Noticing the rise of deal-of-day websites such as Groupon and Living Social, Carlton created Monmouth Gives. Monmouth Gives is a community based directory for restaurants to offer a discount to residents that support charities. Simply visit monmouthgives.com and purchase a

gift certificate to your favorite restaurant then pick from the list of charities you would like to donate to. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charity of your choice. Current charities involved are Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth and Middlesex Counties, Community Affairs & Resource Center of Monmouth County and Rose’s Fund. It is encouraged that all of Monmouth County based charities join Monmouth Gives. “Monmouth Gives is about supporting restaurants and charities in the community.” says Carlton. “If purchasing just two deals from Monmouth Gives sends a child back to school with proper supplies, helps save an animal’s life or assists an economically disadvantaged family and our community restaurants then it is a success.” For additional information, to purchase your gift certificate or get involved please visit www.monmouthgives.com or email gina@monmouthgives.com.

Community Gardener’s Market At Lunch Break Seeks Fresh Veggies

L

unch Break, the oldest and largest Red Bank soup kitchen and food pantry that is celebrating its 30th birthday this year, is dedicated to serving the ever increasing local population suffering food insufficiency. Included in their mission is a commitment to focus on healthy eating, including fresh vegetables and fruits. Once again Lunch Break is asking local gardeners to help with that commitment. If you find your garden harvest so bountiful that you have produce and herbs, as well as cut flowers, to spare and to share, Lunch Break would welcome your donations to their Community Gardener’s Market. Guests/clients who are served by Lunch Break are so grateful when they can take home fresh produce with the nonperishable emergency provisions they collect from the food pantry. The Gardener’s Market takes place each Tuesday in September between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. In 2012, Lunch Break served 56,487 hot meals; distributed free emergency provisions from the food pantry 7,128 times, and provided 8,879 clothing pickups. In addition Lunch Break invites job seekers to take part in a Suited for Success Program; distributes special food baskets for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas holidays; participates in disaster relief, as they did after Super Storm Sandy; and offers cooking classes for children, including nutrition lessons among many other things. These services are free to Lunch Break guests, and are accomplished with a small paid staff supported by more than 2,000 volunteers, as well as the generosity of residents and organizations in the greater Red Bank area. Gardeners from Red Bank and surrounding communities who wish to participate in the Community Gardener’s Market mark your calendar for Tuesdays between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., in September. The Market will be located inside Lunch Break at 121 Drs. James Parker Blvd. in Red Bank. Garden donations can be made Monday afternoons, if possible; otherwise they can be delivered Tuesday mornings. If you have any questions regarding your donations, please call Sharda Jetwani at 732.747.8577. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated. To learn more about Lunch Break, its activities and events, go to www.lunchbreak.org. They can also be followed on Facebook and reached at 732.747.8577 or info@lunchbreak.org.

HOLMDEL HELPS CONTINUES TO PARTNER

WITH KEANSBURG

Story Susan Murphy

Plants to Keansburg School

H

olmdel Helps began a partnership with Keansburg early in January of this year. The partnership was made in a goodwill gesture of neighbors helping neighbors, communities helping communities. Holmdel Mayor Patrick Impreveduto discussed with Keansburg Councilman Thomas Foley, who is also a police officer in Holmdel, and Keansburg Mayor George Hoff how Holmdel could help the Borough through the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and beyond. Before long, ideas and plans for fundraisers were formulated, and organizations from both Holmdel and Keansburg began to work together.

One of the first events was an incredible fundraising evening held on March 1 at The Gramercy at Lakeside Manor in Hazlet. Holmdel Township Committeeman Thomas Critelli thought this would be a great way to kick off the long term relief efforts for Keansburg. Numerous organizations and businesses were involved including T&M Associates, the town engineers for both Holmdel and Keansburg, Holmdel Kiwanis, parents’ groups in the Holmdel schools, who gathered items for the silent auction and raffle baskets. An impressive PSA was produced by Holmdel High School’s TV/ Film Society in which the students interviewed both Mayors, filmed areas in Keansburg to show the loss of homes, and spoke to Keansburg residents. With well over 1,000 homes damaged, some declared uninhabitable, many needing extensive repair, Keansburg residents were definitely in need to rebuild and restore their community. Holmdel Helps set a goal of raising $100,000 during the March 1 fundraising event that would be used to directly purchase core building materials for these residents. Thanks to the unbelievable generosity of Holmdel residents and businesses, the goal was reached!

Holmdel Community Day

Holmdel Community Day

On March 7 at the Holmdel Senior/Center, over 200 people attended a special fundraising luncheon sponsored by the Holmdel Recreation Wednesday Cooking Class. Under the guidance of Chef Antonietta Picascia, the class was given a recipe for Pastaefagioli and on the day of the event they brought in six crock pots filled with the soup. Local restaurants donated food and the menu included soup, salad, pasta and dessert. The luncheon was very successful and these funds were combined with those from the March 1 event for Keansburg.

On April 20, Holmdel Community Day offered another opportunity for fundraising, under the direction of Darlene Kiss, Appointed Board Liaison for Village School in Holmdel. Those who donated $1.00 could write or draw on a sticker that was placed on a small petunia and given to young students at Keansburg’s Port Monmouth Road School on May 8 for their mothers on Mother’s Day. Colts Neck Cub Scouts

Prepare for a New Year of Excitement

olts Neck’s Cub Scouts of Pack 90 are busy preparing for another exciting year. Will you be a part of it? In addition to regular den meetings with boys his own age, a scout will be able to participate in monthly Pack meetings where all the Cub Scouts get together for ceremonies, games and other fun activities. Do you like camping? The pack will be doing a camping demo with help from the Boy Scouts followed by not one, but two, overnight camping trips to a local state park. One will be in the fall and another in the spring. Older cub scouts in the fourth and fifth grade will also get camp overnight with the Boy Scouts. Do you like racing? Each year Pack 90 holds its annual pinewood derby where the boys race model cars that they built themselves for speed trophies and appearance awards. In a non-competitive race, the scouts build model boats and sail them down a water filled course using straws. Other highlights include Skate into Scouting, Cub Scout Spooky Trail, the water carnival, the annual picnic with sack races, water balloon toss and tug-of-war, and the Blue and Gold Banquet where the cub scouts celebrate the anniversary of scouting with a visit by the Boy Scout Order of the Arrow ceremonies team who assist the oldest cub scouts to cross over to Boy Scouting. These exciting, fun-filled activities will be used to help reinforce the twelve core values of Scouting - Cooperation, Responsibility, Citizenship, Respect, Positive Attitude, Resourcefulness, Compassion, Faith, Health and Fitness, Perseverance, Courage and Honesty. The monthly Pack meetings will also revolve around one of these values as well.

Cub Scouting is a year-round family-oriented part of the Boy Scouts of America program designed for boy who are in first through fifth grades (or are 7-10 years of age). Parents, leaders and organization work together to achieve the 10 purposes of Cub Scouting: Character Development, Spiritual Growth, Good Citizenship, Sportsmanship and Fitness, Family Understanding, Respectful Relationships, Personal Achievement, Friendly Service, Fun and Adventure, and finally, Preparation for Boy Scouts Signups for the Pack will be held on Friday, September 13th from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the cafeteria in the Conover Road Elementary School and Friday September 20th at the Conover Road Elementary School from7:30-8:30 p.m. during the regular monthly Pack meeting. Holmdel’s Go-Green Team Partners with ShoeBox Recycling

CareOne at King James is pleased to announce our specialized Cardiac Program.

William R. Satz Parent Support Group (“PSG”) GoGreen Team, in partnership with ShoeBox Recycling, introduced a school-wide shoe recycling program that will take place all through the year, with a focus on REUSE. Students, faculty, families, and community members are all encouraged to participate. Students may donate their gently used shoes and place them in a “ShoeBox Recycling” bin that will be located in the Satz School cafeteria. ShoeBox recycling is raising awareness and improving education at all levels about the need to participate regularly in shoe recycling. With over 300 million pairs of shoes hitting landfills each year, ShoeBox Recycling is looking to change the way people think about their shoes and the need for REUSE around the globe. All of the secondhand goods collected are destined for reuse within the United States and abroad. The PSG Go-Green Team will receive a check for every acceptable full box of usable shoes returned. All proceeds from this collection will go to towards educational enhancements for students. ShoeBox Recycling is headquartered in Fairless Hills, PA, and more information can be found at www.shoerecycling.com. The PSG Go-Green Team would like to thank you for your shoe donations. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the PSG Go-Green team at GoGreenSatz@yahoo.com.
