The old pun, time flies, is fitting as our season of beaches and barbecue is coming to her end yet again. With only a few weeks left to savor our local’s summer, our September issue of CM reminds us: look back, remember, and use what you learn to move forward. Our cover story on page 42 is all about the music…from 50 years ago and today. Rockfest at the Track 2019, a local festival in its twelfth year, is dedicated to the sounds of Woodstock, bringing together some of the best local bands in our area. Rockfest honors the sounds of the late 60s, as well as some new, while supporting HABcore and raising money to house the homeless of Monmouth County. Mark your calendar for October 5th at Monmouth Park Racetrack and buy your tickets today! On page 53 you’ll find the story of David and Sean Goldman. David’s struggle to regain custody of his son, Sean, made national news a decade ago. Because of their ordeal, an important piece of legislature was signed into law five years ago with the help of David’s attorney, Patricia Apy of Paras, Apy & Reiss (Red Bank), and U.S. Congressman Chris Smith. But there’s more that needs to be done so the other Monmouth County families experiencing what the Goldmans have are reunited. This compelling story will both educate and alarm you. We at CM hope you had an amazing Labor Day weekend and that the rest of September reminds you to savor the last sips of summer rather than the first whiff of pumpkin spice and fall! Or maybe, we can all do both.

Holmdel residents were invited to join the police department at the Township building on Crawfords Corner Road for games, food, police K-9 and drone demonstrations, face painting, and fellowship. Holmdel police said the goal of their inaugural National Night Out participation was to “light up Memorial Circle” at the Holmdel Township building. Families were given luminary bags to decorate and place around the circle.

Why I started: My daughter was diagnosed with high risk stage 4 neuroblastoma at 3 ½-years-old. I was just getting out of a domestic violence divorce, and my life already felt out of control, so this diagnosis sent me reeling. Drawing on my background in childhood theater, improv, and a decade long career in leadership and personal development I chose to regain my control the only way I could, I chose to make it fun. Favorite part of my job: The amazing families I get to meet. The moms I get to talk to. It’s the people that make it meaningful. Biggest professional challenge: There are two currently. The first is finding the families who are going through childhood cancer. Because of HIPPA laws you can’t just get a list of families. So far, it’s mostly been word of mouth. The second is finding companies who would want to sponsor books for various non-profits. I have a list of non-profits that would love to provide this book to their families, either in welcome bags, gifts boxes, etc. It’s always about finding the funding. What’s great about partnering with non-profits is that a company gets a 501(c)3 tax deduction because they give directly to the non-profit and then the non-profit can get the books from our company at a bulk rate discount so it’s a win-win for everyone.
ME ET YOU R N EIGHBOR:
Tara Geraghty by Cathy Padilla
Who I am: President & Founder of Minipoka Publishing and author of Making Cancer Fun; A Parent’s Guide (MCF) published in March 2019 as a resource for families facing childhood cancer. What I do: Receiving a childhood cancer diagnosis is one of the most devastating things a family can face. Cancer can terrify anyone, and when it’s your child it’s even worse. Parents experience a tidal wave of emotions from being overwhelmed, terrified, and angry to feeling helpless, out of control, and depressed. Studies show PTSD runs high in parents after childhood cancer, even higher than in the patient themselves. Studies also show, when a person feels more in control it can lower their rate of PTSD. MCF’s goal is to empower parents to regain a sense of control through FUN. There are more than 2,200 studies proving the power of laughter in health care. Providing support, ideas, tools, and tips, families can choose how they want to face cancer - and fun is a powerful tool to add to their tool belt! Fun distracts us from pain. Since both physical pain and emotional pain are a daily part of childhood cancer, shouldn’t fun be also? What sets me apart: There’s a current push in pediatrics to make medical experiences less scary for children. With a wonderful growing field of child life specialists, we realize lowering a child’s anxiety can make a huge difference in their medical experience. MCF takes it a step further - to not just make medical experiences less scary, but to actually make them fun whenever possible. There is also a growing awareness that a childhood cancer diagnosis is not a “patient diagnosis”, but a family diagnosis. The whole family is affected, even siblings. MCF is focused on supporting the family unit as a whole - from self-care for parents to engaging siblings in a positive way.

My biggest inf luence: My daughter. She saved my life. After she was born, the abuse in my marriage was getting worse and worse. Which is super common when it comes to domestic violence. I sunk into a depression. I knew something was seriously wrong when I didn’t want to get out of bed and stopped caring about my business and my goals. My daughter is what kept me going. I knew I had to be there to take care of her and to keep her safe. I was in court for six years fighting to keep her safe and during that time childhood cancer was thrown into the mix. I look back and sometimes wonder how I had the energy to keep going! Now she is a cancer survivor and my miracle kid. My favorite quote: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say I used everything you gave me” - Emma Bombeck Tara lives in Monmouth County with her daughter Emily Grace, who is now 13, and their Chi-weenie Elinor, who is Emily’s emotional support dog.

Parental Alienation Parental alienation comes in all forms – from the most extreme cases of overt brainwashing, parental abduction and even false allegations of sexual abuse to more subtle forms that might not even be perceptible to the perpetrator. It is, however, in all its forms, child abuse. Our children are born to two parents. Under New Jersey law there is a presumption that children are entitled to the love, affection, and guidance of both parents. Of course, if circumstances suggest that that is not in a child’s best interests, court is the forum in which to air those claims. An impartial factfinder – a judge – is empowered by law to make sure that a child’s best interests are protected and has the authority to enter an order best suited to balance the child’s right to know both parents with the child’s need for protection. All too often a divorcing parent decides that self-help is the best way to insulate the child from the perceived danger the other parent presents. Just as often the motivation is less about protecting the child and more about punishing a spouse
he or she has grown to hate. What about the effect of alienation on the child? Many angry divorcing spouses don’t even think about it, but ultimately it is the child who suffers. For an extreme example of the insidious nature of parental alienation and its effect on the child, read Finding Hope in Chaos on page 53 of this month’s magazine, the story of Sean Goldman’s abduction to Brazil and his father’s five year battle to get him back. An alienated child can develop insecurities through a false sense of abandonment. An emotional response can be manifested as anger at the perceived abandoning parent. And, often, when the truth comes out and the child realizes that it was the parent he trusted who was the author of the false narrative about the other parent, there is often a backlash against that parent. Divorcing parents, for the sake of their children, should recognize the importance of the other parent in the child’s life. In the best of all worlds, each should encourage the child’s love and affection for the other parent, no matter now difficult
that may seem. In fact, that is required by New Jersey Law. In the real world, however, that can be difficult or even impossible. At a minimum, though, divorcing parents should assiduously guard against doing or saying things or behaving in a manner that tells the child the other parent is untrustworthy, unsafe, or dangerous, or that that parent doesn’t love the child. Although alienation is painful to the alienated parent, it is toxic to the child. A now retired judge used to say that if you tell a child he comes from junk, pretty soon he’ll think he’s junk. Think about it. There’s a ring of common sense to that. For your child’s sake, sublimate your animus for your spouse. After all, the spouses are divorcing each other, not their children. Many people are terrible spouses, but, at the same time, are great parents. And some people become better parents after divorce. Don’t mix the apple of your anger at your spouse with the orange of your children’s right to know and love both parents. It’s not fair to them.

BEHIND THE BRAND:

Source Brewery at
BY: LILIANN PARAS | PHOTOGRAPHY: LORI DONNELLY Phil and Keri Petracca and Greg Taylor recently opened Source Brewery in Colts Neck and are grateful for the overwhelming positive response from the community. Set in a restored historic farmhouse, the owners emphasized Source is more than a business, it is their home. Visitors are welcomed in to experience what Phil calls the beer drinking trifecta: great beer, great environment and a great staff. Scaling up from five-gallon batches in Phil’s garage to brewing more than 300 gallons at a time is an impressive accomplishment. Source is fulfilling the goal to deliver an unforgettable beer drinking experience. CM was invited into this farmhouse and following is an excerpt of our meeting with Phil and Greg.
WHERE THEY LIVE Phil: I live with my family in Howell. I have three wonderful kids. My daughter Bella is 16, and I have 8-year-old Enzo and 5-year-old Cruz. My wife Keri is expecting, so we have something else brewing here at Source. Greg: I’ve been a resident of Asbury Park for just over three years.
LIFE BEFORE SOURCE
20
Greg: I was fortunate enough to do some traveling throughout Europe in my late teens and then again while studying abroad in college. I got a taste of some world class beer that shocked my senses and opened my eyes to the possibilities of what beer could be. I was instantly bitten by the curiosity bug that ended up sending me down the craft beer and brewing rabbit hole that I am still delving deeper into each passing day. I studied business management at Penn State then decided to enroll in the oldest brewing school in the US, the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago. I went on to get my master brewers degree at the Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany and began brewing at Weyerbacher Brewing company in Easton, PA shortly thereafter. (Greg is an advanced level beer “Cicerone”; comparable to a wine sommelier). Phil: I have an untraditional path to brewery ownership. I spent twenty years in tech, and while Chief Product Officer for a global biometrics company, I developed and successfully commercialized a technology that focused on beer dispensing at home or on the go called Fizzics. In the beginning, there was a lot of socializing
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
the technology directly with consumers at beer festivals and trade shows. During those days at Fizzics, I also visited a lot of breweries to introduce Fizzics and Greg was the brewer at one of them, Weyerbacher Brewing in Easton, PA. Shortly after my meeting Greg, he called and asked to join me on my Fizzics journey, and we’ve been coworkers ever since. We also immediately started brewing in the office, I think subconsciously I wanted a professional brewer in the office (laughs). Greg: I’m glad I was working that day!
THE SHARK TANK EXPERIENCE Phil: Shark Tank had strong interest in Fizzics because we were a key example of how you could democratize innovation and bring products to market. Fizzics had raised over 1.5 million dollars through crowdfunding platforms Indiegogo and Kickstarter, and successfully scaled sales to national retailers Target, Best Buy and Amazon in one short year in business. It was an amazing success story under my leadership. We ended up facing all six sharks and received a two-milliondollar deal from Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner. Lori was influential in getting Fizzics into Bed Bath and Beyond and

we appeared together on QVC several times. In minutes we would sell out of all the product we had. Lori was an amazing Shark and businessperson to work with, and I’m grateful for her support and friendship. But, as internal struggles with my partner grew, it was decided that I would follow my true passion, the beer, and focus my efforts on making Source a reality. On my exit from Fizzics, I asked Greg to join me, and as you can see, he was right behind me.
THE BREWERY IDEA Greg: We were deeply embedded in the New Jersey craft beer scene and wondered, “What is this area missing?” We noticed there were no breweries in this area and most breweries in the state are located in industrial warehouses or strip malls. Only a few were kid friendly, and fewer had any accommodations for dogs. Family and balance are a focus at Source. The first floor taproom welcomes families with kids, the second floor mezzanine and rooftop terrace are reserved for adults, and the beer garden and grounds are open to all, including dogs. Phil: We have visited amazing breweries not only in the US, but around the world. The lasting impressions had common denominators; they focused on “beer first”, community and they all sourced ingredients locally. Colts Neck was at the top of our list based on the strong agriculture backbone and access to local farmers in close proximity for sourcing ingredients to incorporate into our beers. We also have the ability to donate our spent grains to local farmers for a completely sustainable business. We found this 130-year-old barn and it looked like it would fall down. But we fell in love with it and are proud of what it is
The shape of the glass aids in holding a head stand, emitting an aroma and concentrating the flavors.
today.
UNIQUE ASPECTS Greg: We focus each day to deliver a truly one-of-a-kind drinking experience at Source. Beer to us isn’t just flavor and aroma in a vacuum. I can’t separate my favorite beer drinking memories from the places and details of the surroundings of where I was when I was drinking them. Phil: The design of our draft system and overall curated experience was influenced from our past study of the way the body perceives texture, aroma and flavor. Every single beer is poured in its own curated glassware, at its designated temperature, carbonation level, and most importantly the ideal amount and density of foam. Although we are in a 19th century barn, we are brewing on an oversized ten-barrel automated brewhouse with rakes, and the cold side of the brewhouse features 120 barrels of fermentation with dedicated lagering tanks, serving tanks, and an American Oak Foeder. We are state-of-the-art.
THE BEER Phil: At one time Keri and I were big wine drinkers and for the most part wine is a single ingredient—a grape. The focus was on the region of the grape growth, the terroir had a big factor on the finished product. I shifted from wine to craft beer for the infinite amount of flavor profiles. Al l st yles ar e broken down into two categories: ales and lagers, but within those categories, there are hundreds of different styles and ways to produce the beers and use locally sourced ingredients. Source is showcasing the essence of Colts Neck, the terroir in our beers, from our filtered well water, working with local farmers for ingredients, and the historic farmhouse our beers are crafted in. Greg: When designing a beer, I typically envision the flavor profile I’m looking for in the finished product and then work backwards to put all the pieces together. We focus on four main categories of beer at Source: Lagers, IPAs, Farmhouse styles, and Stouts. There are many people trading up from mass produced, commoditized beer to local craft beer
CM’s Feature Editor LiliAnn Paras interviewing “The Source”
every day, and we want our community’s first experience at Source to be positive to help encourage that trend. We want all of the other breweries in the area to do well so we can all collectively elevate the craft in New Jersey. Phil: (laughs) We live beer. We put people and beer before profits; if we do a good job, the latter will come. So far, the support has been amazing and we are truly grateful.
The best beer drinking experience is had at the Source.

The Community YMCA and YMCA of Western Monmouth County will celebrate coming together as the newly united YMCA of Greater Monmouth County and honor influential community leaders at their Stronger Together Gala on September 27 from 6:00 to 11:00 pm at The Addison Park in Aberdeen. “The Stronger Together Gala will be the highlight of an exciting and historic year for the YMCAs of Monmouth County as we join forces as one Y to strengthen the foundation of our community,” said Laurie Goganzer, president & CEO of The Community YMCA. “We are looking forward to honoring five dedicated volunteers who’ve been instrumental in helping the Y increase its impact.” The two YMCAs have been transforming lives in Monmouth County for 145 years and officially merged on September 1, to become the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County, the second largest YMCA in New Jersey with Goganzer serving as president and CEO. The celebratory gala will recognize volunteer leaders and friends of the Y as follows: • Marti and Bruce Huber, Red Bank, will be presented the Legacy Award for their significant impact on the community throughout the lifetime of their involvement with the Y. Y scholarships, and were influential in fundraising for the Red Bank YMCA in the 1980s and establishing The Community YMCA Foundation. Bruce Huber served as a board member of The Community YMCA in the 1960s and as a trustee from 2009-2017. • David Hernandez, Old Bridge, will be presented the Distinguished Citizen Service Award for his outstanding community service. Hernandez is the owner of Old Bridge Funeral Home, incoming president of the Old Bridge, Sayreville & South Amboy Chamber of Commerce, and a board member of Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge.
Proceeds from the gala will support the Y’s financial assistance scholarship program that gives kids, teens and families in need access to affordable childcare, swim lessons, summer camp, therapeutic counseling, college readiness and other life-changing programs. The benefit will feature music by The Infernos Band, which has performed for President Barack Obama, New Jersey governors and for audiences across New Jersey and around the world. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, dancing, gift auctions and inspiring stories about the Y’s impact. Individual tickets, sponsorships and digital ads are available and can be purchased at bidpal.net/strongertogether.
• Jennifer Lakefield, Colts Neck, will receive the Visionary Award for her ongoing commitment to strengthening communities and planning for the future of the Y. As chief volunteer officer for The Community YMCA, Lakefield helped guide the successful merger of the two Ys. She learned to swim at the Y and participated in many youth development programs. She has served as a Y board member since 2012 and has been appointed chief volunteer officer of the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County. • Stacey DeAlmeida, Marlboro, will receive the Volunteer of the Year Award for her outstanding service to the Y. DeAlmeida served on the board of the YMCA of Western Monmouth County for six years, and as board chairperson since 2017.

What’s Your MO? Did you ever open an invitation and the first thought that enters your mind is, “Do I need to go to this?” As human beings we have a constant BALANCE between OBLIGATION and DESIRE. Perhaps we were raised in a household of structure, religious or cultural, that espoused these “rules”. It seems that society is somewhat shifting toward a mindset of “do what feels right and don’t let others define your rules.” When my kids were young, we used to sit and constantly watch Disney movies - mostly of the princess genre. Then The Lion King came out, and as I was contemplating the “bigger picture” (as I have a nasty habit of doing), I was taken by the scene where the clouds part and Mufasa’s spirit appears to his son, Simba. Mufasa’s fatherly voice booms, “Remember who you are. You are more than what you have become.” Wow! I knew I was more than what I had become. Like Simba, perhaps I needed to dig deeper to find my true purpose, go inside myself to find the answers. So, I asked myself three questions: What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail? What would I do even if nobody paid me to do it? What makes me come alive? If you have ever watched any cop or crime series on TV (ever wonder what there are so many?), the root of all episodes is motive. What were the perps reason for acting? Their MO. Modis Operandi (mode of operating) is our reason, and underlying psyche of what drives us. So, I return to the question of obligation vs. desire. Perhaps we can seek clues, and a better balance to understand why we do what we do. What is your MO? Stop and contemplate what (and who) is important to you. There is no doubt that our lives are full of obligation as a result of a series of decisions we make like having a family or having a job or business that you want to perform well at.
26
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
1. Ask - Ask yourself, how can I use my MO to improve my life and to make a difference in others? 2. Seek - Actively look for answers. Once you’ve opened your mind and heart (past the stage of obligation) to the possibilities afforded to us in this GREAT country, pay close attention to the people who show up. They are there to either teach you a lesson, challenge you, or help you – you will NEED others to accomplish bigger things. 3. Knock - And keep knocking. When you come upon a door of opportunity or desire that you intuitively believe is for you, you must knock. If you want to find out what’s on the other side of the door, you must push it open and step through. Every single day take one small step that moves you in the direction of your purpose. Make the decisions and choices that will bring into your life the things to help you fulfill your purpose. There will be times when you lose your footing or take a wrong step, and that’s OK. Each step, whether right or wrong, teaches us something, and leads us closer to our purpose. Listen and pay attention to each mistake. In my business as a Financial Advisor, I see economic parallels that also apply. Therefore, it is important to spend time to plan and find “purposeful” investments and money priorities in your life. I have also learned that it is also important to understand that “purpose” does not discriminate by age. The older you get, especially as your kids grow, the MORE IMPORTANT it is to find (and possibly rebalance) your purpose, priorities and MO. Life is hopefully a long movie YOU get to direct. Follow your MO purposefully and consciously every day, day in and day out. You will wake up one day and your life will be completely transformed—because you’ll be living your purpose – Modus Operandi.

DO YOU KNOW PEOPLE WHO AVOID DENTAL TREATMENT BECAUSE OF SERIOUS OBSTACLES? • Fear and anxiety
• ADD/ADHD
• Difficulty Getting numb
• Alzheimer’s disease
• Down Syndrome or other developmental disabilities
• Acute gag reflex
• Parkinson’ disease, cerebral Palsy or other conditions that cause involuntary shaking • Autism, autism-spectrum disorders
• Dental phobias of all kinds • Inability to communicate or to understand and follow simple instructions
• The need for extensive treatment or restoration that might take many appointments and cause undue stress and anxiety
A significant part of our practice involves treating patients with special needs. This includes people who are extremely anxious and phobic. Individuals with mental and physical challenges, such as neurological disorders like Parkinson’s or epilepsy, can experience tremors or seizures. Individuals on the autism spectrum, or those with Down Syndrome, may not understand the dentist means to help and to take care of them. Sedation helps to calm their fears and give them an easier and more comfortable experience. Similarly, with Alzheimer’s and dementia, decreased reasoning capacity can keep the patient from cooperating. When the patient is asleep, the dentist can do the work that the patient needs.

Denise and Bill Boglioli with Holmdel Funeral Home's unofficial greeter, Stella, and son, Scott Boglioli (standing) in their newly renovated space.
Meet Your Neighbors:
Bill & Denise Boglioli BY LILIANN PARAS It is said that the prettiest home on the block is often a funeral home. This adage is true enough in the case of Holmdel Funeral Home, which recently underwent an elegant renovation. Bill and Denise grew up in Monmouth County and moved to Holmdel four years ago (residing in the home space above the services area.) They have two sons: Scott, who has joined the family business, and Chris, a local attorney. Their dog Stella is definitely part of the family too. They have embraced the area and noted with warmth that they are developing more and more friendships all the time. They serve on several boards and give generously to local fundraisers for police, fire, first aid, churches, schools, local sports...donating money, needed itemsand golf balls. We spent a most enjoyable afternoon learning more about the profession and the people behind it all. How did you get started in the funeral profession? Bill: I was seventeen years old. I went to Woolley Funeral Home and asked for a job and I never left. My grandfather had died a year prior and the people at Woolley’s were so nice to everyone. It seemed like something I would want to do. I was always fascinated by the business. (Note: They also own the WoolleyBoglioli Funeral Home). Holmdel Funeral Home is a true family operation. How did the two of you meet? Bill: We grew up together in Long Branch. Denise is related to the Woolleys and after college we worked there together. How do people react when they find out your occupation? Bill: A million questions! The “6 feet under” questions, the jokes right away. 32
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
The renovation is so elegant. What did this entail? Bill: We hired designers and worked for eleven months in preparation, and this July, two 18 wheelers arrived filled with furniture. Denise: We wanted a more relaxing environment. Bill: The colors and everything else were designed to create a comforting environment, and a bright one to encourage conversation, as opposed to just rows of chairs. We always noticed people moved the chairs and tried to create conversation areas. What is the most satisfying part of the funeral profession? Bill: Truly the helping, being there when someone has a major catastrophe in his or her life, and every death is a catastrophe. Whether the person is 90 or unfortunately young, every loss is important. When you lose someone elderly they may have been with you 60 years of your own life- that’s a challenge. Being there, helping them clear their thoughts and honor their family member’s existence in this world is very gratifying. What are the challenges? Bill: It is always the emotions. There are people you know, or a young person, or a tragic situation. They call me for guidance, support and trust. I can’t be emotional myself. We have to be there to help them and when it’s over, it’s our time to let it go. We have to figure out how to do that and that’s a tough trick. What do you do outside of business to relieve the stress? Bill: Golf! And travel to B&Bs. We have dinners out a lot with this schedule. Denise: I like to read, and travel but I do not play golf. I like to walk. Bill: Don’t walk with her- you will be running, her walking pace is a run.

County Walking Trail Dedicated to late Alexis Mason Plaque placed at Sunnyside Recreation Center trail The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders attended the balloon launch and plaque dedication, organized by the Mason family of Middletown, honoring the late Alexis “Lexi” Mason at the Sunnyside Recreation Area walking trail, which is located on the opposite side of Sunnyside Equestrian Center. Mason was a young Middletown resident who passed away unexpectedly during a run with her soccer team at the recreation area in 2013. The Monmouth County Park System named the walking trail in Lexi’s honor. “It is truly amazing to witness the love of the Mason family through their annual celebrations of Lexi’s life and I am humbled to be a part of this dedication ceremony this year,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the Monmouth County Park System. “This plaque at the trailhead will serve as a commemoration for her family, friends, and the Middletown and Monmouth County communities.” Each year, the Mason family hosts a balloon launch at Sunnyside on the anniversary of Lexi’s passing, which is July 23. “It is never easy losing someone from your community, especially when that resident is so young,” said Freeholder Gerry P. Scharfenberger, Ph.D., former Middletown Mayor. “This remarkable family was able to channel their grief into charitable work in Lexi’s honor. I would like to thank the Mason family for including the Freeholders in this tribute to their daughter.” In their daughter’s honor, the Mason family created the Alexis Mason Foundation in 2013 to celebrate Lexi’s life, inspiration, and kindness. According to its website, the Alexis Mason Foundation awards scholarships to children for sports, arts and academics so that they can follow their passion and dreams. The Foundation also makes a monetary donation to both the American Heart Association and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for their continued work in heart research. For more information about the Alexis Mason Foundation, visit alexismasonfoundation.com. Left to right: Freeholder Gerry P. Scharfenberger, Ph.D., Freeholder Susan M. The band plays both originals & covers and features first class musicians including: Kyle Ward, a virtuoso guitarist and production genius who recently graduated Berklee College of Music; Dimitris Kulaga, life-long percussionist in Latin, rock, and folk music styles; Aaron Manzo, a well-versed bass player, guitar player and songwriter with natural rhythmic flow; Pongsapak Kiatpreecha, a Berklee graduate and highly skilled drummer in various styles; Emily Grant, a passionate saxophonist, who adds tasteful color and energy to the group.

Current line-up is by time in the band: Dave Sorber, lead guitar & vocals; Tom Tibaldi, keys & rhythm guitars; Ray Jandura, bass & vocals; Bob Moat, lead guitar; Dave Sweet, drums. XOL AZUL BAND Xol Azul Band (XAB) is a five-piece band formed in 2002 with its original lineup lead by singer and bassist Gidalthi Guillen, guitarist Gil Cruz, keyboardist Fabian Rojas, drummer Fabian Gomez, and percussionist Javier Medel. Their sounds represents the new Latin rock breed singing in Spanish/English, with their CD capturing American and Hispanic music lovers of all sorts.
MATT O'REE BAND The band takes their fans on a ride that hasn’t been heard or seen at this level since the ‘70s. Their live show is like revisiting a Zeppelin concert at the Garden, and with Lex Lehman on bass, John Hummel on drums, Layonne Holmes and Eryn Shewell laying down angelically gutsy backing vocals, Matt and company have built a foundation that can hold up the biggest house on the block. After years of honing their craft, the Matt O’Ree Band has become an overnight success. Get M.O.B.’d up with New Jersey’s next great export.
WOODFISH Band members: Steve Kalorin, bass & lead vocals; Chris Macock, guitar & back vocals; Dominic Kalorin, Drums. Visit the band at: woodfishmusic.com. “Rockfest is one of our favorite festivals to perform at every year. Each year the festival gets better and always features extremely talented bands for fans who are truly diehard live performance music lovers. Rockfest has never failed to provide fans with a great time and Woodfish is proud to be a part of it.”
DECADE COLOSSAL STREET JAM Mix the gritty, soulful vocals of Gene Potts with the guitar fire of Sal Marra, the pulsing bass of Anthony Flora, the war-hammer drums of Dave Halpern, and the one-man festival that is Eric Safka on keys, and you get Colossal Street Jam (CSJ). A 5-piece band based out of Red Bank, that plays a 70s style brand of infectious and melodic rock and roll.
In a year that has seen John Hathaway’s Neil Young tribute band, Decade, grow exponentially, playing Rockfest is definitely another highlight for the band. The high energy vibe of the show is what Decade most looks forward to, and with that in mind, a high energy tribute is what you can expect from them. Decade’s lineup for this show features Hathaway on lead vocals and guitar, Steve Cunniff on keys and backing vocals, Bunker Strout on guitar and backing vocals, Joe Napolitano on pedal steel, Aaron Manzo on bass, and Dmitris Kulaga on drums.

Colts Neck Lions Break Ground on New Sensory Den at Dorbrook Park BY SUSAN MURPHY MUCH-ANTICIPATED Lions Sensory Den will soon be a reality. On August 22, the official ground-breaking ceremony for this specially designed playground in Dorbrook Park took place. In attendance were Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, President of the Colts Neck Lions Club Justin Lotano, Colts Neck Mayor Thomas Orgo, and members of the Monmouth County Parks System.
THE
Club President Lotano said his wife, Christina, came up with the idea for the Sensory Den and together with Club members they explored types of equipment, costs, and how to raise the funds. All of the members of the Club, especially long-time Lions member Andrew Lotano, were eager to begin the planning and fundraising for this project. Donations came from several local organizations. With the Lions Club support, the generosity of the businesses, and the Monmouth County Parks System, this project became a true community effort. The Lions Sensory Den will be an extension to the current Challenger playground located at Dorbrook Park. Although the Den is open to all children, the equipment and features are geared toward children who are blind, visually impaired, and autistic. Freeholder Lillian G. Burry said, “This groundbreaking is the culmination of a cooperative effort to see this unique project executed. The Lotanos and other Lions presented the idea to our Monmouth County

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR
Douglas Eagles BY SUSAN MURPHY DOUGLAS EAGLES has been the Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monmouth County (BGCM) since 2012. He oversees the Asbury Park and Red Bank Units, which serve more than 1,900 youth in the county each year. He has developed and implemented a three-year strategic plan focused on producing life-changing outcomes for the youth in this county. Under his guidance, BGCM has thus far experienced sustained financial growth, strengthened board relations, and enhanced donor engagement. Eagles has more than 15 years of experience working within the youth non-profit sector and retains a longstanding commitment to the children of Monmouth County. He began his career with Aslan Youth Ministries, a non-profit organization serving at-risk children in Red Bank, Asbury Park, and Long Branch. Eagles holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Philosophy from Eastern University in Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts in International Relations with a concentration on Conflict Resolution from the New School in New York City. Eagles grew up in Middletown and currently lives in Lincroft with his wife and two sons.
Monmouth County. When they are in our clubs, they are given opportunities to play, develop healthy relationships with their peers, explore the world, discover their skills and talents, and have fun in a safe and welcoming environment.”
When did you begin working with Aslan Youth Ministries?
Is there a special moment that truly stands out during the time you have spent at BGCM?
“At a very young age, I had the opportunity to travel the world. I spent my summer breaks backpacking on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, running a summer camp in the Ukraine, and building churches in Russia. These experiences opened my eyes to a level of poverty that I rarely encountered growing up in Monmouth County and ignited a passion in me to use the skills and talents that I have to empower those less fortunate than I. When I graduated college in 2000 and the opportunity to join the team at Aslan presented itself, I knew that I would be able to channel my passion and energy into something that would make a real and lasting difference in the lives of kids who were growing up in some very challenging circumstances.” What key quality do you have that works well in handling your role as Executive Director? “I think passion for the work, combined with the determination to do it well, is what drives me to ensure that my club is a place that empowers every child to dream big and strive for greatness.” What motivates and inspires you to continue providing a positive environment for the children of BGCM? “What motivates me to continue each day is knowing that every moment kids are in the club they are surrounded by caring adults who invest their time and energy in building up and inspiring our members to thrive in life. A lot of our kids come from some of the most challenging environments in

“A few years ago, one of our younger members – she was seven years old – was grazed by a stray bullet across her forehead while she was sitting in her apartment watching a movie. I remember when I got the call that Mary (not her real name) had been shot. My heart dropped and I raced to the emergency room. When I got there, my staff was in the room with Mary, surrounding her hospital bed. Mary was looking up at the staff, bandages across her forehead where the bullet grazed her, smiling at my staff as they presented her with a large teddy bear. That image stuck with me because that captures the essence of what we do at the club. We surround our club kids with love and support and help guide them through whatever life throws at them. We do whatever it takes to empower them to thrive in life.” What activities do you enjoy? “I love training for marathons. The discipline required to train your body and mind to push beyond the edge of what you think is possible is tremendously gratifying and teaches me new things about myself, about life, and about the world we live in. I also love taking my two boys on hikes in the numerous parks throughout Monmouth County.” What is your vision for BGCM in 2020? “My vision for the club is to continue to expand our operations to serve more kids and to ensure that every member has access to a high-quality, technology-rich, afterschool experience, regardless of who they are or where they come from.”

U.S. Congressman Chris Smith, Sean Goldman, and David Goldman
Ten Years After... David and Sean Goldman Discuss Life After an Abduction BY LILIANN PARAS | PHOTOGRAPHY: CATHY PADILLA
“OUR LOVE AFFAIR IS OVER.” Imagine being blindsided by those words, on Father’s Day, from your spouse. And then imagine the spouse is across the world in Brazil, with your four-yearold son, and announces by telephone that she is never returning. David Goldman did not imagine this - he lived it fifteen years ago. And so began the long, agonizing, entangled quest to reunite with his son, Sean. This was an important national case with international implications and it was the impetus behind the passage of federal legislation. The plight of David and Sean humanized an all too common, but mind-boggling concept - Parental Abduction. The case magnified the effect of
abduction on the left behind spouse, but what about the perspective of the abducted child and the psychological effects? Sean was only four when he was taken to Brazil, and almost ten when he boarded a plane back to America on Christmas Eve a decade ago. He was leaving behind relatives and friends, and now facing a language barrier, a home he didn’t remember, a new school, and a man he hardly knew as his father. To make matters even more difficult, his mother had remarried while in Brazil and a year before Sean’s repatriation to America, she died while giving birth to a daughter. Sean’s maternal grandparents and his stepfather took over and vigorously continued the fight to deprive David of his son.

refused access to Sean. All the while, the family engaged in “parental alienation,” repeatedly lying to Sean, telling him that his father did not want to see him. When father and son finally did get to visit, David was devastated by Sean’s inquiries about why he never came to see him. It speaks volumes about a parent’s love for his son that David did not retaliate or resort to saying negative things about the Brazilian family.

It was painfully apparent the legal system alone was not equipped to resolve these issues. Apy knew she had to attack the case from many angles. David summed up the collaborative efforts. “Ultimately, it happened, with attorney Tricia and an attorney in Brazil, with government help, with media help, walking the halls of Congress, with rallys (the Bring Home Sean group was started by his friend Mark DeAngelis), every way possible to finally get a Brazilian court order to return him.” This was truly a nonpartisan issue and effort with many legislators working behind the scenes. Rep. Smith continued his advocacy and flew to Brazil with David to bring Sean home. The story, not surprisingly, does not end there. In a heartbreaking twist, shortly after David arrived, the Brazilian Supreme Court suspended the decision to return Sean. It ruled Sean must testify and remain in Brazil until the case settled - which would not be soon as a twomonth recess was set to begin that very day! They were up against tremendous odds. David said at the time, “To demand a 9-year-old, innocent, psychologically damaged child to speak in court is beyond cruel.” And David had every reason to believe Sean was being expertly manipulated by his ex-wife’s family. His stepfather and step-grandfather were family lawyers in Brazil. David explained, “[They] gave lectures on how the abducting parent will use the child as an attack missile against the left behind parent. So they pretty much wrote the textbook on these things.” Sean reflected, “When a child is brought over to another country, the other parent is going to tell the child a lot of bad things about the parent they are not in contact with. That is going to skew the perception of the other parent and may influence the decision on where to live. No one is telling you exactly what is going on. As I got older I was able to see how they tried to skew my perception. It’s crazy what people will do to win.”

Congratulations to New Jersey Natural Gas, who returned home with the coveted Lunch Break Softball Classic Tournament Trophy. New Jersey Natural Gas was the overall victor in the 2019 Community Picnic Softball Classic lineup, which included teams from Manasquan Bank, Morgan Stanley, NJ Shore Law Offices, Two River Community Bank, and Lunch Break. Mike Adamson was the umpire for the series. “Everyone was a winner at this year’s Community Picnic, especially Lunch Break,” says Director of Administration and Special Events Millie Jeter, who organized the day’s festivities and softball tournament. “We couldn’t have done it without the tremendous help from volunteers and support of our donors, local businesses and corporations who helped to bring smiles to the faces of our families.” The highlight of the afternoon was the Back to School Drive, where more than 200 children received school supplies and backpacks donated by generous community members. Carol Stillwell and the Red Bank River Center also presented donations to Board President John Klein and Executive Director Gwendolyn Love.
MRT’s Gan Mazon “Garden of Plenty” and Rutgers Master Gardeners Partner to Feed the Hungry FOR T WELVE YEARS precious garden space on the Monmouth Reform Temple (MRT) campus has produced and delivered thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables to local, non-sectarian pantries in Monmouth County. On a humid day in August, master gardeners and volunteers were busy, culling bright red tomatoes off the vines, weighing cucumbers and peppers, and sorting squash and beets for delivery to Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Greater Monmouth County (JFCS) in Asbury Park. Led by long-time temple member and past religious school principal David Levinsky, also a master gardener, volunteers meet every Thursday and other days as needed during the growing season.
“Gan Mazon,” which Levinsky explains, loosely translates into Hebrew as “Garden of Plenty,” was begun as a joint project between MRT and the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Monmouth County in 2009, then under the auspices of Master Gardener Howard Bodner. Over the years, the garden has tripled in size to its current 3,000 square feet, improving production through crop rotation and succession planting. David Levinsky of Morganville took over the leadership of the garden in 2012 and was joined by fellow master gardener Gloria Gross of Lincroft a few years ago as co-director. Gan Mazon donates 100% of its harvests to local non-sectarian pantries. Last season alone, 1,700 lbs. of fresh produce were delivered to the JFCS food pantry, with an additional 400 lbs. sent to the Open Door pantry in Freehold. An estimated 8,000 lbs. have been delivered since 2012 when Levinsky began keeping records. 68

Holmdel U19 NJX Madrid Ranked #1 in the Country
Back row, left to right: Coach Eric Hinds, Santieno Harding, Anthony Arena, Eric Hinds, Shane McBride, Ryan Brodeur, Torre Avitabile, Zach Sintic; front row, left to right: Luke Yates, Jason Tango, Jack Russo, Ki Costa, Joseph Arena, Charlie Daly, Leo Montesinos; not pictured: Coach Colin Schmetzer, Mark McStay, Danny Paolillo, Jack Giunta, Ethan Kilmnick, Andrew Schweizer, James Schutz, Jack Hempstead, Team Manager Marianne Murray THE HOLMDEL BOYS U19 NJX Madrid team finished the
spring season winning the USYS National League U19 title and the U19 NJ Cup Super Group State Championship. Even more impressive, this group of boys finished with a final ranking of #1 in New Jersey, #1 in the region and #1 in the country for the U19 age group. Coach Eric Hinds had the pleasure of coaching many of this core group of boys for the past 13 years. He attributes the success of the team to keeping most of the boys together throughout their youth. In the spring of 2019, Coach Eric collaborated with Coach Jim Sintic from the Ocean travel team to combine forces to create what ultimately was a winning formula. Coach Collin Schmetzer was able to take this group of boys who were once fierce rivals and mold them into one incredible team. For both of these coaches, it was a bittersweet end to many years of working with these fine young men. It was a memorable last season during one incredible soccer journey. In total, 13 players are going on to play at the college level.
