Welcome

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

F

all has officially arrived, bringing with it crisp weather, harvest festivals, opportunities to visit local farms and pick-your-own apples or pumpkins. The fall foliage will soon be at its peak. Make some time to drive up north and marvel at the magnificent colors Mother Nature casts upon the leaves. It is bound to relax you! October is breast cancer awareness month. Everyone has in some way been affected by this insidious disease. Participate in the Breast Cancer Walk or wear pink to show your support. Be aware and be there for those struggling with breast cancer and remember those who have succumbed to it. Fight like a girl! The end of October brings us to one year post-Sandy. Homes were lost but close-knit communities were formed in the aftermath of Sandy. Many people did not know their true strength until Sandy; and the outpouring of love and commitment for those in need still has not diminished. Although pediatric cancer month was in September, this month we are sharing the story of an amazing fouryear-old cancer warrior whose special birthday wish was to raise $50,000, one dollar at a time, to help fund a clinical trial so other children will have better treatment options. So, sit back, take a bite of a freshly picked apple, and let Community Magazine take you on a visual and documented trip through this fall’s festivities! Best,

New Studio Helps Dancers Find Their Inner Voice Her vision for her studio has always remained focused on the technical building blocks to proper dance training that adds essential elements to students’ education as their bodies physically mature and their dance vocabulary grows.

SAMANTHA MAGUIRE ZALESKI, a local resident of Hazlet with her husband Tom and their children Harper and August, has more than 20 years of experience teaching dance in the community. She has always dreamed of having her own studio, so when the opportunity presented itself this past May, she was eager to get started. Essential Elements Dance Studio (EEDS) opened its doors late this summer and almost instantly has struck the right chord with the dance community. She believes, “Dance is an outlet of expression no matter what the level and every dancer will be encouraged to find her inner voice and strengths,” and the community seems to be responding. In a few short weeks, she has not only attracted a thriving student base of dancers, she has also attracted a highly credentialed teaching staff, who are trained and active in the NYC dance community. Amanda Esposito, who has trained at the Joffrey Ballet and presently with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, teaches ballet; Brandon M. Girouard, who works professionally as a dancer, choreographer, competition judge and convention facilitator throughout the country, teaches tap and jazz funk; and Stephanie Hueston-Paden, who is a mom of three little ones and the founder/president of Coping with Laryngomalacia Non-Profit Organization, teaches the beginning essentials to 3-5 year olds. Each member of the EEDS staff believes in the brand vision and will continue to empower each student with these values. One of the many things that makes EEDS unique is the incorporation of Progressions Classes which is a main focus in the curriculum and growth of the dancers through open level classes. They are designed to focus on strength and conditioning, understanding positioning of the body and increased flexibility of the

growing adolescent body, which is key to creating a well-educated student. Through her connections within the dance community, Samantha has also created a cooperative learning environment with NY/NJ area dance companies and surrounding studios through the Master Class Series. The Master Class Series has different dance professionals coming to the studio to teach classes to the EEDS students to maintain the students’ exposure to different teachers and different teaching styles. In the last month alone, EEDS has welcomed Candice Mancini and Sophia Marzocca from In the Spotlight, Waldwick, NJ. The complete Master Class schedule can be found on the studio’s website. Samantha has also reached out to the local community and is working with local schools’ Dance Teams – specifically the St. John Vianney Dance Team, under the leadership of Miss Evelyn Keehn. EEDS maintains an established dress code and environment to ensure the emphasis is on the dancer, her body positioning and her performance. The brand new facility is equipped with suspended Marley floors and designed around many eco-friendly elements such as a water filtration system, a beautiful reclaimed wooden ballet barre from Washington state and a paperless administration. Here the families can make payments or order EEDS dancewear from the comfort of their homes or from the convenience of smartphones & tablets. Registration for Master Classes may be done on the studio website – www.EssentialElementsDanceStudio.com. EEDS will be holding auditions for the Atticus Dance Company on November 24, 2013 for this premier season. Classes are filling up steadily and EEDS has the space available to expand as soon as it becomes necessary.

sixth annual

Colts Neck Rockfest

STORY VICKY VALET

Music, Vendors & Small-Town Company

Colts Neck Rockfest’s founder Steve Warendorf at the festival’s sixth annual event.

T

he sixth annual Colts Neck Rockfest was held on Saturday, September 14, at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. Music lovers from throughout the area donned Rockfest paraphernalia and gathered around a warm bon fire to enjoy a tailgate atmosphere, great local bands and small-town company on a brisk autumn day.

This year’s music and arts festival was hugely successful, attracting a crowd of approximately 300 people. However, according to Rockfest founder and Moroccan Sheepherders band member Steve Warendorf, impressive turnouts such as this have not always been the norm, with the event originating from humble beginnings. “It started out as a little picnic. We had two bands [one of which being the Moroccan Sheepherders] and just had our friends

16

and family join us,” said Warendorf. “We probably had 30 people.” Thanks to the support of Bucks Mill Park, a makeshift stage donation in the form of a flatbed truck from Sakoutis Brothers Disposal, Inc. and the assistance of Joe Bongiovi, Rob DiCarolis, Larry Duffy, Jack Lind, Glenn Taglieri and Michelle Warendorf, Rockfest has since grown from a simple backyard gig to the community-wide event it is today. Although the musical stylings of 3-Chord Symphony, Alex English, Bad Neighbors, Courtney McManus, Dave McCarthy, First to Friday, Moroccan Sheepherders, Pepperwine, Random Test, Red and the Roosters, Red Bank Blues Band, SMA Project, Strumberry Pie, The Billies, The Working Men, Two River Band, Xol Azul and Woodfish

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

were certainly the day’s main attraction, numerous local vendors—such as Breakthrough Wellness Center, Brookie’s Baby Berry Hats, Carolyn Roche Designs, Stella and Dot and a T-shirt airbrushing tent—provided equally enjoyable entertainment in between sets. Despite the vast popularity of Colts Neck Rockfest and the seemingly endless amount of possibilities for its future expansion, Warendorf insists that his goal is to keep it grounded in the community and simply about the music. “We don’t want it to be a fullblown Woodstock-type of festival where you have thousands of people,” said Warendorf. “The bands have fun, the people enjoy the music—they look forward to it all year long. If everyone can come out here for music, a drink and a little food, it’s all good.”

he three-hour performance held at Village Green Park in Lincroft was enjoyed by over 100 people. LVGA Director and Gloria Nilson Realtor Heather Colella noted, “LVGA members are here helping and bringing the community together to have some fun.”

Lori Bennett, a former LVGA Director and active member of the community, knows lead singer Kevin Mulvaney of THAT BAND, as well as many of the sponsors, and together with the current LVGA Directors she coordinated this great event. “It was a nice day for everyone to come and enjoy what was offered,” said Ms. Bennett. For those who missed the event, watch for another concert next summer, she noted. THAT BAND has been around for more than 30 years and performs classic rock and roll, blues, R&B and Soul, with something for everyone to enjoy. Mulvaney, who has been with them for 12 years, noted that proceeds from the concert would go to LVGA for the park. He was pleased with the concert and the response from the audience. “We love performing and have done many benefits in the area, especially to raise funds for those affected by Sandy.” He does the group’s bookings and writes the songs. They just released their first CD, “Leonardo,” in honor of the town where they grew up. THAT BAND members are Bruce Bentsen, guitar and vocals; Tim “Cozz” Paddack, bass and vo-

The Sikoras teach the puppies basic and socializing skills, which prepares them for further training as service dogs. Junior was at the event with his handler Nancy, who was in a wheelchair, relies daily on the help given by Junior. Attending the concert was Dan Gorsegner, his wife Andrea, six-year-old Hannah, and soon-to-be-fouryear-old Natalie Grace of Middletown. They were requesting donations for “Infinite Love for Natalie Grace,” which Andrea started for her daughter. She notes on her flyer that Natalie Grace has been kicking cancer’s butt one day at a time since being diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on August 16, 2012. On September 28, Natalie Grace celebrated her fourth birthday. This strong little cancer warrior wanted to raise $50,000 by that date, so other children can benefit from pediatric cancer research. Luigi’s Famous Pizza-Ristorante & Catering of Lincroft donated pizzas for the event. Other Lincroft businesses who supported this event as sponsors were Bryan Voetsch of Master Electrical Systems; Brad’s Lawn & Landscape, Frost Heating & Air-Conditioning; Gloria Nilson Realtor Heather Colella, and party designers Cindy Hubeny and Kathy Limyansky. Several sponsors included private contributor Steve and Kim Grillon and family; Dr. Lawrence M. Stankovits of Atlantic Pediatric Orthopedics, Shrewsbury; Bethany Auto, Hazlet; and Leslie Auto Sales, Red Bank. Independent representative for Silpada Denise Wisniewski displayed fine jewelry and her sons Nicholas and Tyler sold rubber band bracelets, the newest craze for kids. Oak Hill Academy

Introduces Latin to its Younger Students

I

sn’t Latin a dead language? Not in the hallways of Oak Hill Academy! Latin has been a staple subject taught to the school’s seventh and eighth graders since the school’s inception. This classic language has many practical applications. Knowledge of Latin increases a student’s English vocabulary and aids in the understanding of grammar. Since about 80% of modern Romance languages take their vocabulary from Latin, its study helps in the learning of other languages. In addition, Latin students perform exceptionally well on standardized tests as a result of their increased vocabulary. What is new at Oak Hill Academy is a Latin course specifically designed for younger students in grades 1-4. Students are learning about Latin and the Roman culture through the “Minimus” series. Minimus is a mouse who lives with a Roman family and introduces children to the Latin language in a very child-friendly way. Basic Latin grammar and vocabulary is taught with an engaging curriculum. It even introduces some Roman myths and legends.

Oak Hill Academy Latin Teacher, Teresa Burke, uses her mouse friend, Minimus, to introduce the Latin language to these 1st grade students.

Friends of the Library Junior Trustees Awaken Children’s Garden at Colts Neck Library Friends of the Library (FOL), six dedicated high school students (Radhika Shah, Julianna Heck, Jillian Villany, Josh Knox, Michael Mazzucco, and Robert Cappelleri) formed the FOL Junior Board of Trustees to complete the challenging mission known as the Garden Project. Two of their friends, Henry Aufiero and Brieanna Rothrock, also volunteered their time to the Garden Project.. Along the way, the FOL Junior Trustees graciously received the help of Master Gardener Arnold Kleeberg and Master Gardener Marilyn Boak in identifying plants, including weeds, measuring soil pH, and other tasks. Since Mr. Kleeberg and Mrs. Boak were two of the founding gardeners, they found it very gratifying to witness the rebirth of the Children’s Garden.

I

n 2001, a team of dedicated leaders sought to improve their community. Together, they conceived the idea of designing and bringing to life a beautiful children’s garden next to the Colts Neck Library. The project was completed with hard work and persistence, and soon enough, a grand opening and dedication ceremony were conducted. Many programs, designed by Kelly Taylor, were geared to children such as growing herbs for pizza, making stepping stones and decorating birdhouses were completed to enhance the garden. Several Master Gardeners donated their time and cuttings to beautify the area. However, after twelve years and a multitude of storms, what remained was only a weathered area of weeds and unruly plants. What was once an oasis of lush, colorful life now seemed to have no hope of returning to such a state-at least, not without hours of manual labor and some inspiration. This spring, the Friends of the Library group (“FOL”) were faced with the difficult question of whether they should close the garden or find a group of people who would take over the maintenance completely. Thankfully, some of the officers, Jeanne Heck and Gauri Shah, enlisted their children, plus a core group of dedicated teenagers. With their parents, this core group of students evaluated the garden’s state of disrepair and, understanding that no such gift of public dedication should be wasted, made a commitment to take on the mission of completely revamping the former garden. With the help of each other, their parents, two of the original Master Gardeners, and board members of the Colts Neck

At the beginning of the project, the Junior Trustees and their parents met and discussed initial objectives. These included removing the weeds and overgrown plants and applying weed killer to deter future weeds; buying new wood and replacing the rotted planks in the surrounding fence; and sanding and repainting the entire fence. The students found their plans challenged by Mother Nature with a super rainy summer and periods of intense heat. The weeds seemed to double every time they looked! As of now, most of the weeds have been destroyed and the fence’s sanding and painting is almost finished. With the help of Daisy Troop 696 and Girl Scout Troops 891 and 1605, the garden will soon be filled with fall flowers and bulbs for spring in the newly loosened soil. The Garden Project began in May of 2013. The Junior Trustees plan to work on it until the fall of their senior year (fall 2014), after which they will pass the project on to a new set of young, responsible students. The young leaders and their parents are extremely excited for their hard work to pay off; after it does, they will perform a re-dedication and grand re-opening of the garden on Saturday, October 19 at 1:00 p.m. Every small accomplishment achieved throughout the project so far—clearing the soil of its weeds, trimming bushes, painting the fence a beautiful white—is deeply gratifying to its members. It is simply the desire to improve their community that fuels the enthusiasm and drive of these students and their parents. They would like to thank Bob Bowden, Colts Neck town administrator, for providing mulch; and Public Works for its planned removal of weeds and branches. Stay tuned for the re-dedication, picture updates, plans for a community herb garden, opportunities for small groups, and a way to donate plants.

A BIG NIGHT FOR THE MARTHA MARY GUILD Now that the Clothing/Linen Sale is over, the Martha Mary Guild of St. Mary’s Church in Colts Neck can relax and enjoy the October meeting. Many exciting things are planned for Wednesday, October 8 - with the Rosary in church at 6:00 p.m., followed by the induction of new members with the pastor, Rev. Jeffrey Lee presiding, at 6:30 p.m. After the ceremony, they will proceed to Madonna Hall for their annual “Pot Luck Supper”, which is always delicious! Everyone

ine-year-old Nicholas DiBlasi is an active fourth grader who attends Indian Hill School. He enjoys playing soccer and baseball. His hobbies include acting, modeling and singing, which he has been doing since he was five-years-old. This year, as a result of his work, Nicholas was offered two awesome opportunities. Both were introduced in September. I couldn’t wait to tell him who he was going to work with!” Nicholas was thrilled. “It felt amazing being on the set. Nicholas was chosen to be an extra on the set after the studio saw his picture; he did not have to audition. Mrs. DiBlasi noted, “When I received the call asking if Nicholas was available to shoot the episode, I was so excited to hear that it was for Michael J. Fox’s return to television pilot episode. My husband and I had just introduced Nicholas to his “Back to the Future” movies so

There are many pros and cons to acting in commercials or on TV. Nicholas shared his thoughts on both. “Acting is hard work because sometimes you have to get up really early in the morning and sometimes it takes a long time to get to the set. I also don’t like to wait months sometimes before I get another audition. But the best part is working on the sets and meeting and hanging out with different people.” Nicholas’ seven-year-old sister Nicole, who attends second grade at Village School, has followed her brother’s path.

Vicki and Matt make sure their children remain grounded and focused on what is important. “Nicholas knows he is doing some pretty cool things. He loves going into Manhattan, being on the set, and sometimes meeting celebrities,” said Mrs. DiBlasi. “But, he knows that this is all secondary to school. For now, Nicholas wants to go to Harvard and either be a General Manager for a sports franchise or a WWE Wrestler! So, he is still just a typical nine-year-old.” When Vicki and Matt were asked if they did anything special to ensure that their children continue to have fun yet still be allowed to experience the thrill of acting, Mrs. DiBlasi replied, “We just enjoy spending time together as a family, so we just do what feels right.”

Nine-year-old Nicholas DiBlasi holds the EDU Science Microscope box with his picture on it that is now being sold at Toys "R" Us.

End of Summer Harvest Dance

F

Friends Of Holmdel Open Space Welcome Guests To Harvest Dance

riends of Holmdel Open Space (FOHOS) held their seventh annual Harvest Dance on September 22 in the restored Gray Star Barn at Historic Bayonet Farm. Fifty guests enjoyed an evening that included casual fine dining, wine and beer. The Mountain Heritage Boys Band with Caller Howard Richmann provided the music and plenty of opportunities to enjoy some country dancing. President Janet Jackel noted there was a wonderful selection of donated items for the silent auction. These included numerous gift certificates from local businesses, a private Eco-Cruise and Gourmet Lunch on the Hackensack River, a ride in an antique car through the Colts Neck countryside, tickets for concerts by the Monmouth Civic Chorus, homemade soups delivered to your door, a handmade baby quilt, and much more. All proceeds from the evening’s tickets, 50/50 raffle, and the silent auction will enable FOHOS to continue their work to preserve, protect, restore and maintain the open spaces in Holmdel.

Elissa Cahill Events coordinated the event, which was catered by Falco Brothers Caterers with Chefs Stephen and Joey Falco. Elissa Cahill noted that this event has become more like a family party, as most of the same people attend year to year. “I can imagine this is what it was like back when Ms. Harding lived here. They had end of summer harvest time just like this event,” she said. Event sponsors were Daniel and Isabelle Hertz and John and Sarah Lawser.

CILU News • • • • • Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) invites you to a presentation by Donna Vieiro, Holmdel Township Administrator, who will explain her role in the Township. The talk will be at the Holmdel Community Center on Crawford’s Corner Road, at 7:30 p.m. on October 21.

Celebrate Lunch Break’s 30 Years of Service at the Fourth Annual Gala You are cordially invited to Lunch Break’s fourth annual Gala and Fundraiser on Monday, October 21 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Navesink Country Club, located at 50 Luffburrow Lane in Middletown. Tickets are $150 each; $106.50 of that amount is tax deductible. The evening will include passed hors d’oeuvres, carving stations, a cash bar, a silent auction as well as a live auction, and a 50/50 raffle at $30 a chance. Entertainment will be provided by the Pat Karwan Trio, whose music it is said is best described as uniquely “American,” and Pat will be joined by Desi Norman on vibes and Tom Labella on saxophone. Steve Trevelise of New Jersey 101.5 will be the MC as well as the auctioneer. There will be presentations of the “Norma K. Todd Award” to Myron and Judith Kaller, the “Heart to Hand Award” to First Presbyterian Church (Tower Hill Church), the “Future Charitable Leaders Award” to Ranney School, and the “Beacon of Service Award” to the Red Bank Rotary Club. One doesn’t have to look far to see the impact of the lingering economic downturn on the hungry and working poor among us. In fact, the New Jersey Poverty Research Institute concludes in a recent report that 25 percent of New Jerseyans are living in poverty. In Lunch Break’s 30-year history of alleviating hunger and providing life’s basic necessities, they are seeing record numbers of people struggling to make ends meet. No wonder the demand for Lunch Break’s services has grown dramatically. In 2012, 56,487 hot meals were served (a 68 percent increase since 2008); 7,624 emergency food pantry distributions went to families (a 65 percent increase since 2008); and there were 8,879 distributions of every day clothing (476 percent increase since 2008), plus outfits for job seekers preparing for interviews and new found jobs. Lunch Break delivers daily meals to the homebound, has cooking classes for children, a summer Community Gardener’s Market, and a back-to-school distribution of backpacks and school supplies. There is a monthly “Dinner and a Classic Movie” night for the Boys and Girls Club; Thanksgiving and Christmas meals; special Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas food baskets; both toy distributions and a senior gift program during the holidays; and a monthly dinner night for the community. Social service providers are hosted on site; there is an internet café for job searches and job seekers are invited to take part in the Suited for Success program; and following Super Storm Sandy, Lunch Break has become an integral part of local disaster relief efforts. All this, and more, is provided under the direction of the Board of Trustees along with the Executive Director, Gwendolyn Love, her small staff, and an army of more than 2,000 devoted volunteers, and is supported through the generosity of residents and many organizations and businesses throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. So, please gather your friends and family and come to Lunch Break’s celebration and fundraising Gala. Our communities need Lunch Break and Lunch Break needs you. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.lunchbreak.org and clicking on the Gala section on the opening page. If you have any questions about tickets, contact Petra Vanderven at 732.383.8005, extension 8, or e-mail at pvanderven@lunchbreak.org. Once you’ve made your purchase, your name(s) will be placed on a list to be checked when you arrive at the Gala.

Natalie Grace Gorsegner

has just completed an

unbelievable third year in her young life.

She was diagnosed with highrisk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on August 16, 2012–just one month and 12 days before her third birthday.

Four-Year-Old Cancer Warrior

Natalie Grace Gorsegner STORY SUSAN MURPHY

W

Now Wants To Help Other Children

hat should have been a year filled with a birthday celebration, trips to the park, romping with friends during play dates, and vacationing with her family, turned into hospital/clinic visits, chemotherapy treatments, and the family’s realization that their entire world would be forever changed.

Andrea and her husband Dan did not know much about ALL but were determined to find out more. “I saw The Truth 365 documentary, learned all the facts, and then researched more on my own. The documentary opened my eyes,” said Andrea. In researching pediatric cancer, she learned that it was the leading cause of death by disease in children and adolescents in the United States; that the National Cancer Institute only allocates 4% of its funding to pediatric research; and that in 20 years the FDA has initially approved only one drug for any childhood cancer.

36

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Fundraising for research seemed the best way to go. Andrea reached out to Dena Sherwood, the founder of Arms Wide Open/The Truth 365, and discovered that with their foundation, 100% of funds goes to research. “Right then and there I decided that I needed to start my own fundraiser as well. That’s when I came up with the idea of renting a post office box and having Natalie and I hold up a sign asking her Facebook followers to simply send a dollar for research, plus to help spread the word,” said Andrea. Natalie’s wish was to raise $50,000 by her fourth birthday on September 28, 2013. “Between the post office box and the online donation site, we did it! We have raised $85,000!” reported an ecstatic Andrea. That was the amount a week before Natalie’s birthday, with donations still coming in. “If I had to guess, I’d say that we’ll likely be in the $90,000 range when all is said and done,” she said.

Andrea said the family plans on keeping the donation page open, and the post office box address, as they will be holding their fundraiser again next year. Any donations received now will be held to jump start next year’s goal. “The next dollar fundraiser will begin on April 1, 2014 and end on Natalie’s birthday, September 28 of that year. This time we are looking to raise $100,000!” shared Andrea. The fundraiser helped the Gorsegner’s feel they had a little bit of control against the cancer. She noted that the money raised will fund a clinical trial which in turn will give children with cancer a less painful treatment option, and perhaps even save a child’s life. “That is my way of kicking cancer to the curb, so it’s been an empowering experience. My Natalie, and these kids are NOT alone, we’re fighting right alongside of them.” Andrea and Dan Gorsegner and their daughters Hannah and Natalie Grace regularly spend quality family time together. Dan is co-owner of the family flooring business Gorsegner Brothers Hardwood Floors. His father is Middletown Fire Chief John Gorsegner. Andrea was photo editor at Women’s Health Magazine but needed to take a leave of absence to care for Natalie following her diagnosis. Natalie’s older sister, six-year-old Hannah, has had to adjust to a lot of changes in the family’s day-to-day life during this past year. Yet, Andrea said, “Natalie’s diagnosis brought us closer together as a family. As cliché as it might sound, when something this scary happens to your child, it puts life in perspective big time!” She emphasized that now, “The big picture is crystal clear, and that picture is family and love.”

“Natalie’s diagnosis brought us closer together as a family. As cliché as it might sound, when something this scary happens to your child, it puts life in perspective big time!”

Four-year-old cancer warrior—Natalie Grace today; taken on September 4, 2013.

As for finding the right words to say or how to help a family who has just learned their child has cancer, Andrea offered these suggestions. Don’t ask if you can help, simply act on your offer to help by starting a gas card drive to help with the travel expense to and from the hospital. Or start a grocery card drive. Set up a fundraising page for them and enlist the help of their friends, family, the community, even their children’s school. It only takes a few minutes on a site such as http://www.donationto.com. Organize a food train which will make sure the family always has a hot meal; visit http://www. mealtrain.com. “One last simple thing you can do is support them! If they share something on their Facebook page, be a voice, share it too. Like their posts, tell your friends as well and help raise awareness. Don’t just sit back and feel sorry for them. Drop them a note from time to time. Even if you have no idea what to say simply say that you are thinking of them every day.” To other parents who have a child with pediatric cancer, Andrea hopes they will share their story as a means by which to educate others. “Allow people to help you because you are going to need it. And, never let go of hope, as all children’s cancers are different.” Natalie Grace Gorsegner is now in the maintenance phase of her treatment and is expected to be cancer-free in November of 2014. MONMOUTH COUNTY

TOWNHALL MEETING Community, Business and Government will converge on Colts Neck High School in October at a Town Hall meeting where people from throughout Monmouth County will have an opportunity to speak and interact with their State representatives. All are welcome to bring questions and ideas as the Colts Neck Business Association (CNBA) hosts a distinguished slate of guests, including Senator Jennifer Beck, Assemblywomen Mary Pat Angelini, Caroline Casagrande, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden and Colts Neck Mayor Mike Fitzgerald. This public forum format will discuss current issues of importance, followed by some informal time to meet and greet the panelists and other attendees. This event will provide local businesses and residents of Monmouth County to directly interact with those they have elected to represent them. “Laws are usually passed by legislators who want to know what their constituents are thinking. Meeting directly with our representatives and sharing with them our thoughts and ideas can be a good way to see progress made in government. It’s not enough to just pull a lever on Election Day. If we want to be well represented we also need to speak-up and open a dialogue with them,” says CNBA President Glen J. Dalakian.

n Sunday, October 20, 2013 the Friends of the Monmouth County Parks System will be holding their Annual Doggie Costume Contest and Pet Fair sponsored by Garden State Veterinary Specialists. This annual event is an opportunity to bring your dog to Thompson Park dressed in a Halloween costume and possibly win a prize in one of several categories, including: the Best Canine/Human Combo, Most Original, Scariest, Funniest, and Prettiest. Winners in each category will be selected during the pet parades held at 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m. Pet product vendors will be offering unique items for your pet and the pet lover in all of us during the Pet Fair which runs from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Pet Fair is a great experience for true animal lovers. You can take your dog to the park; enjoy the Pet Fair with them and even dress up for Halloween. While enjoying your day, you and your dog can support the Monmouth County Parks system including the offleash dog areas. The importance of off-leash dog areas in an urban environment has been established in research studies. A community which has an off-leash dog area provides a place for both dogs and humans to socialize with each other. Play is an important activity for a dog and is pretty important for humans as well. Having a designated space for dogs and their owners reduces the likelihood that dogs will be let loose in other areas where they could adversely affect the rights of other park users. Dogs often help people break the ice, getting people who share similar interests to socialize while exercising their dogs. The opportunity to socialize builds a sense of community which benefits everyone. The Monmouth County Parks System has designated two offleash dog areas for Monmouth County, one located in Thompson Park on Newman Springs Road in Lincroft and a second one at the Wolf Hill Recreation Area in Oceanport. The Thompson Park location offers a 1.5 acre space for larger dogs and a ¼ acre “small dog area”. This location offers water to both humans and canines. At the Wolf Hill Recreation Area there are concrete patios with sheltered picnic tables. Both off-leash dog areas are open 7 days a week during regular park hours. Every dollar raised during this event goes to the Friends of the Parks and supports the programs and facilities of the Monmouth County Park System that made the Off-Leash Recreation Areas for Dogs possible. We urge everyone to come out and support this event. Bring your dog on a leash and enjoy the day in the park together while you browse among the pet related displays at the Pet Fair or participate in the Costume Contest. If you would like to enter your dog (or you and your dog) in the Costume Contest you can register ahead of time or at the Fair, for more information on the event call the Friends at 732.975.9735 or visit their website at www.friendsofmonmouthcountyparks.com. Ranney School Honored by Two Local Charities for Community Service Efforts This October, the Ranney School community will be honored by two local organizations for its efforts to support Family and Children’s Service of Monmouth and Lunch Break. Family and Children’s Service Ranney School and the Parents’ Association have been selected as one of three honorees at this year’s Family and Children’s Service Gala, An Evening of Southern Elegance, on October 5 at Navesink Country Club. For the past two years, RSPA has hosted a clothing and accessories drive in conjunction with the annual “Rock the Runway” fashion show. This past winter’s clothing drive helped to restock FCS’s Thrift Shop, one of the organizations major sources of revenue, which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Thanks to the efforts of the Ranney Community, the Thrift Shop was able to reopen, and the funds raised were able to support the programs FCS provides to those in Monmouth County. For more information on FCS, please visit their website.

Holmdel Native Cast In Clint Eastwood’s Film Adaptation Of

Jersey Boys B

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

rooklyn-born. Holmdel-raised. Los Angeles-famous. Johnny Cannizzaro – remember his name. He discovered a passion for acting early in life and followed its call with amazing intensity. Today, that drive and desire to touch his audiences has brought him to a defining moment in his career. Cannizzaro was chosen for a supporting role in the film adaptation of the Broadway play, “Jersey Boys,” being directed by Oscar winning actor, director and producer Clint Eastwood.

new musicals called “A Ring In Brooklyn” and “Wartime Romance.” He shared that many teachers and directors have influenced him along the way. “My Holmdel High School English teacher Marianne Maltese (Connelly), Holmdel High School Drama Director Joe Clores, Brookdale Community College Theater Director John Bukovec, and my Music teacher from Hazlet Sal Catapano are just a few from back home who were integral in guiding me on the path I currently pursue.

With a strong background in the performing arts, Cannizzaro was well prepared for his role. “My first audition for ‘Jersey Boys’ was in November and I’ve been back four times since. The part I was offered wasn’t even one they had originally seen me for. I play Nick DeVito, brother of Tommy DeVito who is a founding member of the Four Seasons,” he said. Finding out he was cast in the film released some strong emotions. “My reaction was that of excitement and gratitude mixed with some anxiety knowing the legends involved. From Clint Eastwood to Frankie Valli to Christopher Walken, I could not be more excited to be a part of this.”

The Cannizzaro family moved from Brooklyn, New York to Holmdel in 1988. Their three children, daughter Michelle and twin boys Johnny and Michael, attended Holmdel schools from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Michael said his brother was always an entertainer. Going back to their years at William R. Satz Middle School, Michael noted, “If you asked some of our classmates they would tell you that Johnny always had a magic trick for you if you wanted to see it. He used to carry around a deck of cards or a fake thumb, anything he could use to perform. He always loved entertaining people. He would do karaoke competitions in high school where he would perform Frank Sinatra or some other popular rock songs. I remember one performance in particular where he actually climbed through the crowd at the Holmdel High School auditorium and everyone went wild.” Michael said his brother always embraced the character he was playing and continuously captured the attention of his audience.

Cannizzaro, who is a 2001 graduate of Holmdel High School, recalls, “I always had an interest in performing. I liked the idea of playing other people. I think the passion for it grew the more I did it.” He joked that his breakout performances as a tree in “The Wizard of Oz” and a drunk in “Anything Goes” at Holmdel High School was when he knew that would be his career path. Cannizzaro has also performed for several theater companies, both locally and in Los Angeles. He was in “West Side Story” and “Grease” at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank; “Into the Woods” with Johnny shown as a construction General Hospital’s Anthony Geary; worker in “Top of the Rock.” and recently he originated roles in Photo credit Char Beck.

Johnny explained what he and his brother have shared throughout their lives. “When we were very young, my brother and I used to pretend we were everything from pro wrestlers to mafia hitmen in our basement. Now, we couldn’t be more different, but being twins, we still have a unique connection. He always helps me rehearse my lines

“... My whole family has been nothing but supportive which I think is an important ingredient to being successful in anything you do.” - Johnny Cannizzaro before auditions, while on the phone from New Jersey. My whole family has been nothing but supportive which I think is an important ingredient to being successful in anything you do.” Michael noted that his brother left for Los Angeles in September, 2005 with little money, no real plan, but holding tightly to the belief that this was where he needed to be to follow his dreams. “As Johnny’s twin brother, I could not be more proud of his accomplishments thus far. I am always impressed with his acting because he has a passion for it like no one I’ve ever seen. It has not been easy for him by any stretch. He would only come home around Christmas for a couple weeks and all the other holidays he was out there by himself. I will never forget the first Thanksgiving he was out there. There were no iPhones or Facetime yet and he was feeling a little homesick so he managed to find a web cam on Hollywood Boulevard where my family was able to at least see him from home in New Jersey, and he ate his turkey while he was on the phone with us. It was kind of funny at the time.” This once-struggling actor now trains several times a week at CM Studios with acting coach and director Max Decker while continuing to pursue a television and film career. He has a co-starring role on the series premier of the 1940s Gangster drama, “Mob City,” which is directed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) and will air on TNT on December 4. Having

worked in both film and television, Cannizzaro said, “I enjoy both. Film is somewhat uncharted waters for me. I might even prefer being on stage because you can experience a character’s journey from beginning to end as opposed to Film where you’ll likely be shooting more than one take and out of sequence.” Whether he performs on television, film or stage, his family loves to hear of his experiences, said his brother Michael. “Growing up, our parents John and Michelle always loved Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons so we were raised on that type of music. We both would listen to the oldies even before pop music, so to fast forward 20 years later and my brother having the opportunity to have a part in this movie, it is something we’re all looking forward to.” Johnny Cannizzaro shared what it was like filming “Jersey Boys” and working with Clint Eastwood. “I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Eastwood in rehearsals and he was very kind and warm to all of us. During my first day of shooting, it felt like a dream come true. I’d look up every few minutes to see him right in front of me or watching me in the monitor and had to ask myself – ‘is this really happening?’ He works very quickly and there is little time for mistakes. But so far it’s been a pleasure to work with the entire cast and crew. Getting to watch Clint Eastwood direct is an education in itself, and I’m just grateful for the opportunity!”

Visit www.johnnycannizzaro.com for more information and updates on the release date for “Jersey Boys,” which is tentatively scheduled for late 2014. The website offers details of the career path of Johnny Cannizzaro, a Jersey boy from Holmdel who is following his dream.

An Evening of Nicholas Marchese Films: Holmdel Resident Uses Flair for Filmmaking to Support Historic Duncan Smith Theater STORY VICKY VALET

On Saturday, August 31, the Holmdel Theatre Company (HTC) hosted An Evening of Nicholas Marchese Films at the Duncan Smith Theater in Holmdel. In the wake of recent damages to the structural integrity of the historic barn theater, the film screening aimed to raise support and funds for HTC and the non-profit’s beloved home, while simultaneously providing a local filmmaker with a platform. The event drew approximately 65 film and theater enthusiasts to its 7:30 p.m. show time, and was the third in a series of fundraising efforts to assist HTC in paying off a recent debt. The owed balance, which amounts to around $25,000, was required to fumigate the 125-year-old theater for an infestation of woodhungry powderpost beetles that was slowly deteriorating the building. Although HTC fundraising was at the event’s core, the evening’s true focus was on Holmdel resident, Montclair State University film student and HTC regular Nicholas Marchese and the screening of films he produced as a Holmdel High School (HHS) senior. According to HTC Vice President of Production and Education Geoff Shields, “[HTC members] were all looking around for ways to pay [the debt] off. Nick, who has worked on stage and behind the scenes with HTC since his freshmen year…had been asking me if he could arrange a screening…And then it occurred to me that because so many people have gotten to know and love Nick over the years with us, we could probably make an event out of it to raise money.”

The 125-year-old Duncan Smith Theater in Holmdel. Marchese, who described the Duncan Smith as his “home away from home,” saw this opportunity to give back as an honor. “A part of me lives in that theater…Each time you walk through the doors of the theater you feel an energy, a positive force of all the vibrant actors who have been there before you! The theater is a hidden gem,” he said. The screening showcased four films produced by Marchese’s brainchild, LampPost Productions, the first being “A Walk In The Park,” which won third place at the 2013 HHS Film Festival and highlights scenic visions of Holmdel Park and Historic Longstreet Farm set to the tune of Simon and Garfunkel’s “April Come She Will.” Following this relaxing, visual stroll was the premiere of “Lock Down,” a documentary exploring the threat of school intrusions and the importance of safety procedures through interviews with students, educators, administrators and security experts. Of the film, which Marchese mentioned was unfortunately inspired by the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, he said, “these incidents can and have occurred throughout the country, and we must be prepared…It is my hope that after viewing this documentary everyone will view the importance of our drills and safety of our

schools through refreshed and informed eyes.” A brief intermission passed and Marchese presented “Locker Doom,” a fantastical, comedy-sci-fi hybrid that depicts a high school student’s seemingly cursed existence after standing up his gothic classmate. Although the film had been previously screened at the 2013 HHS Film Festival, where it took home the first place prize, Marchese utilized this event to premiere an alternative ending that will eventually give way to a sequel. “I wanted to leave the film somewhere where I could make the audience wonder who it is, where they are going and what’s going on,” he said during the proceeding Q&A session. After several hours of entertainment, HTC wrapped up the evening with Marchese’s “Holmdel High School Lip Dub,” which features all HHS has to offer through means of students—and select faculty—dancing and lip singing to pop music. Despite being a fundraiser, HTC did not charge attendees an admission fee, opting instead to offer guests a suggested $5 donation. In the end, this technique yielded positive results. “We did really well,” said Shields. “Because the event had a suggested

donation…I really didn’t have anything to base an expectation upon. So I guess the lesson is, it pays to have a little faith!” Additional funds were raised through the sale of candy, soda and Marchese family homemade treats. Generous local vendors, including Bethany Cleaners, Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant, Carousel Bakery, Cold Stone Creamery, Dearborn Farms, Liu’s Garden, Luxury Nail and Spa, McDonald’s, Moo-A-Lisa’s Ice Cream Parlor and Old Time Bagels, contributed gift certificates to be raffled off, and Bow Tie Strathmore Cinemas donated a substantial supply of popcorn. Though An Evening of Nicholas Marchese Films proved successful, HTC will continue their fundraising efforts in the coming months with attractions such as a John Astin—of Gomez on “The Addams Family” fame—event, which is scheduled for October 18. While HTC strives to pay off monetary losses, the Duncan Smith Theater will remain open for business, as it should be. “This old barn has been a home for theater artists of all ages for 25 years now,” said Shields. “The kids that pass through here go on to study elsewhere, and then come back to pay it forward… It really is a living theater. That’s a precious thing.”

Domestic Violence

omestic Violence has become an all too common phenomenon in American society. In response to this burgeoning problem, New Jersey enacted the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act in 1991. Since then it has been amended several times in an effort to better address the needs of victims for protection and the behavior of the perpetrators of the violence. Domestic violence is specifically defined in the statute and includes attempted murder, assault, harassment, stalking, kidnapping and terroristic threats. There are other offenses that may also constitute domestic violence under the statute. It is intended to protect spouses, ex-spouses, present or former household members, persons who have a child together and persons who had a dating relationship. If one of these predicate acts occurs, the victim may file a complaint in which he/ she asks for a restraining order. If the judge agrees that the actions of the defendant constitute domestic violence, the judge will issue a temporary restraining order or TRO.

If the incident occurs during normal business hours (i.e., 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday), the Complaint must be filed in the Superior Court. If the incident occurs after hours or on weekends, the restraining order may be requested of the municipal court judge in the town in which the incident occurred. The temporary restraining order will contain a date for a full hearing in the Superior Court at which the victim and the defendant may each testify under oath and may each offer the testimony of other witnesses. At the conclusion of the hearing, the judge will decide whether to make the TRO a Final Restraining Order (FRO) or to dismiss the complaint and the TRO altogether. The victim has the burden of proving that an act of domestic violence occurred and that the protection of a restraining order is needed. If a judge decides that a restraining order is justified by the facts, a variety of other issues may then be addressed. Among them are possession of the residence, custody of the children, parenting time and support. The

NE judge also has the authority to order the confiscation of firearms and other weapons by law enforcement officers. In these cases, a judge’s task can be particularly difficult. The stakes are high. The victim’s safety is paramount, but so is protecting the defendant’s constitutional right to due process. Often these cases come down to a “he said/she said” proposition. With relatively limited facts, a judge must decide the credibility of the victim’s and the defendant’s accounts. Domestic violence knows no ethnic, racial or economic boundaries. It affects, with nearly equal intensity, virtually every municipality in New Jersey. Although the Act is a tool for protecting victims, changing our culture and attacking the problem at its root causes is, in the long run, the approach that will create bigger benefits for our society.

10th Annual

Bayonet Farm Arts & Music Festival

Provides Engaging Cultural Experience

STORY VICKY VALET

On Sunday, September 22, the 10th annual Bayonet Farm Arts and Music Festival was held on Bayonet Farm’s historic grounds in Holmdel. Keeping with decade-old festival’s original mission, the event sought to “create an enjoyable cultural experience that [engaged] students, artists and the public while increasing public awareness of serene open fields and historical significance of Bayonet Farm.”

A

ccording to festival committee volunteer Phyllis Ameduri, “[the festival] was originally started by people in the community who had an interest in bringing the beauty of Bayonet Farm to public awareness.” Thanks to the dedication of festival committee board members Janet Berk, Caroline Masco, Zabel Miracle, Vicktoria Scotto-Lavino and Sede Spang—as well as a multitude of volunteers, such as Ameduri—the Bayonet Farm Arts and Music Festival has since blossomed, annually attracting upwards of 500 people from the local community and greater nation, and inspiring the appreciation and creation of multiple artistic mediums. “The variety of art that’s part of the festival now has really expanded,” said festival committee volunteer Karen Strickland of the event’s evolution. “Every medium of art is included and it has become more eclectic.” This year’s festival included various children’s crafts, including community mural painting and pottery wheel demonstrations; food and drink provided by Sunnyside Market and Deli and Holmdel Fire Company #1; historical tours of the property’s Harding House; performances by Celadon Youth Group, Chime, Colts Neck Swing Band, Doodle Dude, Ed Beckenstein, Frank

Patrouch, Goya Dance Group, Holmdel Theatre Company, HUCC Finn Group, Los Mas Valientes and Swamp Grass Jug Band and the traditional juried art show, sale and award presentation for artists and En Plein Air painters. While the 2013 Bayonet Farm Arts and Music Festival was an undeniable success, the committee board members are unwilling to rest on their laurels and are devoted to the event’s continual growth. “It’s difficult, but to have more different mediums, like sculptures, would be wonderful,” said Scotto-Lavino. No matter what the future holds, however, Miracle insists the festival’s intentions and atmosphere will remain constant. “To me, that’s one of the beauties of the event—the simplicity,” she said. “It’s low-key and relaxing. It’s stepping back in time and enjoying the beauty in nature and around us.”

Newman Springs Dental Care Raises Money for Parker Family Health Center Dr. Mitchel Friedman of Newman Springs Dental Care in Lincroft believes that having a whiter smile can do more than make you feel more confident; it can help sick and disadvantaged children get needed health care. Dr Gail Reilly and Jim Holley accepted the check from Dr. Mitchel 5/12Friedman at a recent Trustees meeting for the Parker Family Heather Center in Red Bank. Dr. Friedman is also a dentist volunteer at the health center. Dr. Friedman, his staff and patients together raised $3,500 by whitening the donor’s smiles. The donation was shared equally between St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Parker Family Health Center. SmilesForLife.org is a charity organization that raises funds for the benefit of children. The Crown Council is pleased to announce another incredible campaign for the Smiles for Life Foundation, which raised $1.5 million for underprivileged children this year. Financial Expert Peter Grandich Launches New Business STORY SUSAN MURPHY

P

eter Grandich is a recognized financial expert and a regular keynote speaker at major investment conferences. He has been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Forbes, CNBC, and Fox News. His website notes that “Confessions of a Wall Street Whiz Kid,” Grandich’s autobiography, received excellent reviews by financial gurus, athletes, entertainers, and the nation’s top accountant, former U.S. Comptroller General David M. Walker. Throughout his business career, Grandich has met and worked with numerous executives and professional athletes. He explained how his newest business came to be. “After 30 years in the business world and almost half of that working with professional athletes both financially and spiritually, I literally was at a networking event that happened to have had a few athletes there as a draw. I thought, why isn’t there a way senior executives from the corporate world and significant business owners could network with professional athletes and visa-versa on a grand scale? I started conceiving the idea in my head, spoke with some sports marketing executives, athletes and business owners who gave me their input and ‘Athletes and Business Alliance’ was formed in early 2013.” Grandich explained what the Athletes and Business Alliance (ABA) offers. “The ABA gives business executives a distinctive new weapon in their marketing arsenal. The newly-formed network of professional athletes and executives enables members to exchange ideas and build relationships to capitalize on the talents of all involved. A symbiotic organization, the group provides accomplished individuals an environment where one can develop personal associations within a structured and supportive system of giving and receiving business.” He added, “Unlike some booking agencies whose main goal is to book an athlete for an appearance and profit from that (which the ABA can do without adding any fees or cost for ourselves, and making the costs substantially less), the ABA goes way beyond that and is a vehicle that brings business executives and professional athletes under one roof to take advantage of each other’s skills and expertise.” He noted, “This is a one-of-a-kind organization. No place else will you find such a large group of well-known athletes who make themselves available to business leaders to help them recruit talent, close a deal, or give their marketing a competitive advantage. Through one of my businesses, I have seen first-hand how the public is mesmerized by and responds to athletes. I knew that harnessing the star power of athletes is a real score for business.” The select membership for ABA includes a diverse group of senior-level executives, high-net-worth business owners, and professional athletes, said Grandich. He noted that the group provides opportunities for these two distinct and highly sought-after groups to intermingle and establish business relationships, as well as the chance to participate in activities that serve the community. According to Grandich, over 50 current and retired professional athletes are members. Some of the current players include NY Giants

68

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Kevin Boothe, Antrel Rolle and Steve Weatherford, NY Rangers Michael Del Zotto, NJ Devils Mark Fayne, Jacob Josefson and Dainius Zunrus, AZ Cardinals Jay Feely, and Panthers Domenik Hixon. Former stars include NY Giants Mark Bavaro and David Tyree, NY Jets Joe Klecko, Ray Lucas and Marty Lyons, Boxing great Gerry Cooney, NJ Devils Ken Daneyko, Bruce Driver and Grant Marshall, NY Rangers Ron Duguay, Ron Greschner and Nick Fotiu, Philadelphia Flyers Bob “The Hound” Kelly and Joe Watson, and Dallas Cowboys Danny White. Grandich emphasized, “From the locker rooms to the board rooms, professional athletes maintain the passion, discipline, and fortitude to thrive in the sport of business and competition is the common bond between the athlete and business executive. The uniforms may be different, but the objectives are the same. For professionals who believe like I do that your network is your most powerful asset—affecting your income and career success—the ABA will help you meet and exceed your strategic business goals. In addition to the opportunity for one-on-one meetings and business lunches, ABA will sponsor a series of unique business/social events where the elite performance athletes and business executives will share proven success techniques to achieve greatness on and off the field.” He would like ABA to be the go-to link that connects businesses with athletes. “I believe professional athletes are a greatly underutilized tool for businesses and corporations of all shapes and sizes and while having them for appearances is something we can do, I hope this leads to much more in-depth usage by both the business community and professional athletes seeking to gain access into the business world.” Visit www.ScoreForBusiness.com or email Peter Grandich at peter@ScoreForBusiness.com. He can also be reached by mail at Athletes & Business Alliance, 2431 Atlantic Avenue, Manasquan, New Jersey 08736; or by phone at 732.642.3992. Peter Grandich also founded Trinity Financial Sports & Entertainment Management Company (TFSEM), a firm with a Christian perspective that provides insurance and estate planning services to professional athletes, entertainers, and the general public. He started the firm in 2001 with former NY Giant and two-time Super Bowl champion Lee Rouson. Grandich is a member of the National Association of Christian Financial Consultants, and is very active in Christian sports ministries. “I serve on the board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Athletes in Action, where I do bible study and chapel services with the NY Giants and NY Yankees. I have served as a board member of Catholic Athletes for Christ. Trinity Financial Sports & Entertainment Management Company helps financially support these sports ministries.”
