I’m IMPORTANT
I have always made my mammogram a priority. After fifteen years of working for the same company I lost my job and my health insurance. I was devastated because my annual mammogram is one of the most important ways I take care of “Me.”
The Women’s Center at Bayshore helped me find a way. As the matriarch of my family, people depend on me, and I depend on the team at Bayshore. Their approach makes me feel cared for and their new equipment makes me confident in the accuracy of my results. It is incredibly reassuring to know that I can take care of my health by getting my annual mammogram – no matter what. I am devoted. I am loved. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your annual mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Bayshore, please call 732.962.7230. Or visit www.BayshoreHospital.org/WomensCenter

A
utumn has officially arrived, bringing with it crisp weather, harvest festivals, opportunities to visit local farms to pick-your-own apples or pumpkins. The fall foliage will soon be at its peak, and I am making it a priority to drive up north, perhaps upstate New York, to marvel at the magnificent colors Mother Nature casts upon the leaves - and perhaps visit a quaint town or two for some shopping and fresh air. If you didn’t attend Colts Neck Rockfest this year, I am suggesting you do next year. On one of the first cool days of the season, locals from all over gathered for a tailgate atmosphere, complete with a bonfire at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. The lineup of bands were incredible, and this year had over 1,000 to 1,500 people come and go throughout the 12-hour music and arts festival. Check out our photo montage on page 36 and 37 of this issue of Community Magazine (CM). October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, everyone has in some way been affected by this disease. I know so many women who have fought like hell and survived, and unfortunately know ladies who have lost the fight. In this issue, CM had the pleasure of meeting Linda Grant, who shared with us one part of her breast cancer journey (page 26).

PSA OF VILLAGE SCHOOL SPONSORS
WELCOME BACK FAMILY FALL FESTIVAL STORY SUSAN MURPHY PHOTOS LAURA SHAY
V
illage School PSA held a special Welcome Back to School Festival for preschool through third grade students and their families on September 19. In attendance were about 525 children which included students and their siblings. Each year the PSA sponsors a fun back-to-school event and this year they chose to have a festival. This would allow more families to attend in a social setting so parents and students have an opportunity to catch up with familiar faces from the summer and meet new ones. Over 45 parents from Village rallied together Friday morning to unload 600 pumpkins, donuts, and apples as well as setup each station. Each grade decorated an area for the festival and the students were asked to show their Village pride by wearing their specific grade level’s color. Preschool wore white; Kindergarten wore green;
12
First grade wore red; Second grade wore blue; and Third grade wore black. The family admission fee included picka-pumpkin from Farmer Schillaci’s Pumpkin Patch for each child, as well as the enjoyment of donuts, snacks and apple juice. Dearborn Market donated the apples, as well as provided bags for all the children to take home their pumpkins. The two-hour event also offered music by Incredible Soundz, hay bale obstacle courses, face painting, pumpkin mask making donated by The Colts Neck Reformed Church Nursery School, a coloring station and slime making. The Xcel Club from Eatontown, which is a youth performance facility focusing on a holistic approach to healthy life styles, life skills and fitness training, organized soccer and kickball games, tug of wars and a hula hoop contest for the students. The highlight of the festival was a special Mummy Wrapping with Principal Brian Schillaci and Assistant

Principal Jessica Vierschilling. Jeff Chen, whose children Preeya and Justin attend Village School, said, “This was the best ‘back to school’ event! The kids got to have two hours of fun with friends - and see the Principal wrapped up in toilet paper!” The Holmdel Girl Scouts, Boy Scout Troop 131, as well as students from Saint Benedict’s, Saint Catharine’s and Holmdel Satz Middle School volunteered to cover each event station so the parents could enjoy time with their children. There were 68 outstanding student volunteers. Laura Shay, Festival Committee Chair, shared, “The Administration at Village, the PSA Executive Board, Festival Committee, parents and community did an outstanding job coming together to show these students that we are all cheering them on for an amazing and successful school year!”

EARLY DETECTION: The Best Defense against Breast cancer PROVIDED BY MERIDIAN HEALTH
The thought of having breast cancer is frightening to everyone. However, ignoring the possibility that you may develop breast cancer can be dangerous. As women, as well as breast experts, Sunita Nankoo M.D., and Catherine Campo, D.O., of the Women’s Center at Bayshore Community Hospital have a wealth of experience to share on the topic of breast health as we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent breast cancer, but early detection provides the greatest possibility of successful treatment. The simplest method of early detection for women ages 20 to 40 is breast selfexamination. The purpose of a regular self-examination is to familiarize yourself with your breasts so you will more readily detect any change. When performing selfexamination, it’s important to look out for any sign of development of a lump, swelling of the breast or skin irritation. After the age of 40, the risk of breast cancer increases and requires a more thorough method of checking for abnormalities. Mammography is a low-dose X-ray of the breasts to find changes or irregularities in the breast tissue. “Digital mammography is considered the standard for
mammograms today,” says Dr. Nankoo. Bayshore utilizes a new form of mammogram called tomosynthesis, but commonly referred to as “3D mammography.” The latest in breast cancer screening, 3D mammography produces three-dimensional images of each individual layer of the breast, making abnormal tissue more visible, and highlighting suspicious masses. “This all-inclusive view dramatically enhances our ability to detect and diagnose small cancers,” says Dr. Campo. 3D mammography also rules out irregularities that would have raised concern in 2D mammograms, reducing the need to call women back for additional imaging. The imaging capability of this technology is particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue. According to Dr. Nankoo, “Now, women who visit the Women’s Center at Bayshore Community Hospital can have peace of mind knowing their mammography was as comprehensive as possible.” The Women’s Center at Bayshore is a place where women have access to the best health care in a spa-like setting, close to home. Designed by women for women, the Center offers exceptional quality care in an environment of caring. To learn more about the Women’s Center at Bayshore, visit bayshorehospital.org.

AP Mauro says about his upbringing, “I was fortunate to be born and raised in a small town that had a simple nature created by ordinary working people. It was honest living, and in spite of hardships, life seemed uncomplicated. These values run deep and will always have a place in my music.”
AP continues, “I asked Steve Jankowski to co-produce, engineer, and arrange the music. Steve has a bio as long as my arm, including being musical director for Blood, Sweat and Tears, and now touring with multiple Grammy award winner Niles Rodgers.”
The songs on “The Rebel In Us” (distributed by Independent Record Label Lamon Records Nashville) cover wide ranging themes. “River Leave me Alone” is about his father’s dealing with the extensive flooding of his home caused by second-costliest hurricane in United States history. “The Dragon Chasing You” relates the concern for a loved one’s addiction. “Miami” is the name of a girl with a secret love, and “Cry and Cry” is about a person’s difficulty trying to solve one of life’s problems, with the title being the last resort.
Today, AP performs his music primarily in the northeast and is rapidly increasing his fan base there, with plans to travel throughout the south, and beyond, in the near future. His songwriting themes include many experiences ranging from adversity and love to the grandeur of the outdoors.
AP was honored by the talent gathered to make the new CD. He explains, “I wanted to make sure “The Rebel in Us” was a quality production, so we assembled a Who’s Who of talent in the music industry. They have toured or recorded alongside such prominent country artists as: Shania Twain, Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, Don Henley, Linda Ronstadt, Loggins and Messina, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, and the list goes on and on.”

He’s very appreciative of his fans, and they tell him how much they enjoy his unique country style. In fact, AP honored his supporters, and their willingness to sidestep the crowd to blaze their own country music trail, by titling the CD, “The Rebel in Us.” The new single “Unfaithfully” is at Radio Now and the new CD release is being distributed by Lamon Records Nashville. FREE DENTAL CARE AT LINCROFT PRACTICE ON OCTOBER 23RD!
dentistry from the heart
Newman Springs Dental Care’s 8th Annual Free Day of Dentistry
D
entistry From The Heart, Newman Springs Dental Care’s gift of a free day of dentistry, will be held on Thursday, October 23. The dental volunteers will provide examinations, digital x-rays, blood pressure and Velscope (advanced oral cancer) screenings. A choice of an extraction, filling or cleaning will be provided to those 18 years and older who arrive at the Lincroft practice. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and is first come, first served. The first 140 adults are guaranteed to be seen. This year’s event will be the eighth annual Dentistry From The Heart event for Newman Springs Dental Care at 539 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. Last year over $48,237 of free dental care was provided to 108 patients in a single day. Since 2007, that’s over $350,000 in care for more than 1000 grateful recipients in Lincroft.
“One day is only a drop in the bucket, however we know it makes a difference in the lives of the people who come to us for help,” said Dr. Mitchel Friedman. “Since bringing Dentistry From The Heart to New Jersey in 2007, several other dental offices have started their own events. There is a large need and other generous dental teams have answered by serving their communities.” For additional Dentistry From The Heart events, visit www.DentistryFromTheHeart.org. Dr. Julia Cintron along with Dr. Friedman, and their team of volunteers will do whatever they can on Dentistry From The Heart day to relieve dental pain and fix dental problems. Drs. Allan Ruda, Beth DeAngelis, Kayvon Haghighi, Randy Davis, Gary Brousell and Jeffrey Zatzkin will also be donating their skills and time to help. Patients who need ongoing care or who have problems that cannot be fixed in one day are referred to community clinics, where they can receive ongoing treatment at low or no cost.

Harkness Method Comes to
OAK HILL ACADEMY
A true and successful method of teaching students has come to Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft. The main feature of this style of instruction is the Harkness table which is a large oval table wherein students and their teacher can see each other at all times. This allows the teacher to encourage students to come up with ideas of their own and learn good reasoning and discussion skills.
a point, and feeling free to ask follow-up questions for clarification. Students work together rather than taking notes dictated by the teacher. Discussion is lively while being equally respectful. Students indicate that seeing everyone’s face and seeing their reactions makes everyone feel more a part of what is happening and being at the Harkness table makes topics more interesting.
According to Oak Hill Headmaster, Joseph Pacelli, utilizing this approach requires students to think rather than just memorize and regurgitate information. “Our intention is to use the Harkness method with our middle school students in their social science and literature classes. We will have this type of atmosphere also for our younger children’s reading classes,” stated Pacelli. Twenty-first century learning skills such as being creative and fostering collaboration are also by-products of this method.
This method and table are nothing new. Both were born in the 1930’s when philanthropist Edward Stephen Harkness challenged the faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire to create a way of teaching using his vision of students sitting at a table where teachers talk with them and each student has an equal chance to speak. Something old is now something new as many elementary, middle, and high schools across our nation are adopting the Harkness method as a powerful means to engage students to think deeply about the issues being studied.
Students are also encouraged to take charge of the discussions by posing their own questions, debating

Holmdel Needs to Oust Incumbents We are witnessing how one-party Township Committee rule can eradicate Holmdel’s character, overnight. This Republican administration is legendary for their brief Township Committee meetings, where differing views from constituents are ridiculed. This non-inclusive approach has led to several major blunders. The worst of these is the decimation of the magnificent 425-acre Lucent property.

The brilliant landscape design that currently replenishes Holmdel’s drinking supply (among 250,000 users) will soon be bulldozed.
Where family farmers would have grown their famous white corn a few more generations, forty McMansions will sprout with forty families to fill them and our schools.
The majestic entrance road will be lined with unsuitably designed and priced senior housing; if enough seniors do not want to spend their life-savings on them, a resulting re-zoning to single family can occur – bringing even more children.

With the PILOT tax program, Lucent building proceeds will go into the Township’s coffer, without benefit to our schools; residents will either incur higher taxes or have Holmdel’s school district quality plummet, along with our property values. The impacts of new COAH housing have not yet been revealed.
On November 4, this mayor and one member are running, again. Please use your vote to keep them from doing further harm. Mind. Body. Fitness. Reformer Pilates. PROVIDED BY JULIANNE DODS VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS
W
hether you are a seasoned athlete, casual exerciser or patient undergoing rehabilitation, each of us are working towards the same goal: to meet the physical demands of daily life. But, despite the varied techniques or training principles we use to accomplish individual fitness goals, many of us forget to incorporate one key element into our processes: mindful movement.
“The key to living a healthier lifestyle and achieving optimal wellness lies in finding a successful balance between physical exercise and inward focus,” says Kerri Miano, Meridian Fitness & Wellness’ Group Fitness Director in Hazlet. “In addition to traditional strength and cardiovascular training, Pilates can improve how your body functions from day to day.” A gentle yet challenging mind-body workout, Pilates is a total wellness approach to fitness that focuses on engaging the mind and strengthening the body through controlled, fluid movements. Safe and effective for everybody, Pilates may be the missing link in your current fitness regime. “In Pilates, the quality of the movement being performed takes precedence over the quantity of repetitions completed,”
says Miano. “By emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal alignment and mindful movement, you learn how to control your body’s movement.” One of the most common apparatuses used in Pilates is the Reformer which provides finely tuned resistance that allows you to work precisely and efficiently. “Reformer Pilates allows for the controlled, continuous use of several muscle groups simultaneously with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core,” says Miano. Invented by Pilates founder Joseph Pilates, the Universal Reformer facilitates hundreds of exercises for every part of the body using a bed like frame with a flat platform on it, called the carriage, which glides back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs which can increase or decrease the resistance as the carriage is pushed or pulled along the frame. Offering many of the same benefits as Mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates offers more variations to the classic exercises and a more functional approach to movement that benefits your daily life activities, and generally provides more specialized attention.
Daniela’s Wish
Focusing on synchronizing breathing patterns with movement, Reformer Pilates is proven to maximize power and efficiency as well as reduce stress. Originally developed for use in Physical Therapy facilities to rehabilitate injuries, Pilates is a gentle, low impact exercise that is both physically and mentally demanding. If you are looking to develop a strong “powerhouse” core, build long, lean muscles, and create an evenly conditioned body, than Reformer Pilates is for you. For more information regarding Private or Semi-Private Reformer Pilates classes at Meridian Fitness & Wellness in Hazlet, please contact Kerri at 732.335.4200 or visit www.MeridianFitnessandWellness.com, today!

“While versatile, the Reformer is probably the most intimidating piece of Pilates equipment in any health and wellness center,” says Miano. “That is why the private Pilates Studio at Meridian Fitness & Wellness is the perfect retreat for those looking to strengthen both their bodies and their minds with Reformer Pilates.”

ROAD TO RECOVERY FROM
Breast Cancer Samra Plastic Surgery Supports Breast Cancer Patients on Their Journey by Offering State-ofthe-Art Breast Reconstructiion Close to Home STORY SUSAN MURPHY
S
amra Plastic Surgery, located in Holmdel and Old Bridge is comprised of highly skilled Board-Certified surgeons specializing in procedures such as General and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, Facial Surgery and Skin Resurfacing, Body Contouring, and Breast Augmentation. Building and upholding a mutual trust between patient and surgeon is extremely important to them. Asaad H. Samra, MD, FACS and Parlin resident Linda Grant developed this trust as they worked through the many steps of her breast cancer journey. Grant’s story began when her routine mammogram showed calcifications and had to be redone. Following the second mammogram, she was told she had cancer in her right breast. She found out that she had Stage 2B breast cancer and would need chemotherapy and surgery. Grant said she did not attend any support group or tell anyone at work except her boss. She continued working every day and maintained her positive outlook on life. “I kept focused on my everyday routine. I treated this as an illness and I took my medicine and just did what I had to do. That’s how I handled it. I am a very strong person and I manage pain well. I just stayed focused and wouldn’t let this interfere with living my life. I told myself I would get through this.” Grant had a mastectomy on February 14, 2013. Prior to this surgery, she had been referred to Dr. Asaad Samra with whom she discussed her options for reconstructive surgery. She chose to have implant-based reconstruction, which Dr. Samra performed at Riverview Medical Center on the same day of her mastectomy. After this initial surgery, Grant went on to have radiation therapy as part of the cancer treatment. Unfortunately, the incision above her implant opened and Dr. Samra had to replace the implant with a smaller version. Grant’s previous radiation treatments had affected her skin and negatively affected
26
the healing process. Frustratingly, the incision opened again several weeks later and Dr. Samra had to remove the second implant. In an effort to salvage the reconstruction, Dr. Samra offered Grant another option called free TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous) flap breast reconstruction. He explained, “Options for breast reconstruction include using implants or using the patient’s own tissue. The choice is a very personal one with no clear better one. There are circumstances when using one’s own tissue may be preferred, such as after radiation therapy or if an implant-based reconstruction failed. At Samra Plastic Surgery, we offer all types of breast reconstruction including the latest advances in implants as well as stateof-the art autologous reconstruction (own tissue) transplanting tissue from one area of the body to create a breast.” Grant decided on this procedure. “I knew I had to give it another try. It was very important for me to feel whole again and through the surgery, Dr. Samra gave me back a part of my body that I had lost. He was very reassuring and explained everything. I was scared but he got me through it.” Dr. Samra finds most women are concerned about being whole again as well as what their appearance will be after the surgeries. “Breast cancer patients are some of the strongest people I know, but even they can use help. I do my best to assure them and give them as clear of an idea of what things will look like,” said Dr. Samra. In January, 2014, Dr. Asaad Samra and the Samra Plastic Surgery team performed the reconstruction of Grant’s right breast using a free TRAM flap. She shared, “I was in the Intensive Care Unit for four days and Dr. Samra came twice a day. The nurses who cared for me were wonderful. He told them what to watch for and he was right there to see that everything was going well. I was discharged

in four days and am very fortunate that it all worked out so well. It was a long road to recovery but using my own tissues meant my body would not reject it. It is all natural, all me.” Grant said she made the right choice with this procedure and the right choice in choosing Dr. Asaad Samra as her surgeon. “He listened when I talked and was very respectful. He was right there with me every step of the way and took great care of me. I don’t think I could have done this without him. I would recommend Dr. Samra to any woman needing breast reconstruction or plastic surgery. He is a wonderful, highly skilled surgeon. If any woman can benefit from all that I went through and if my story helps women realize there are wonderful doctors such as Dr. Asaad Samra who can help you, then I am happy to have shared my journey to recovery.” Linda Grant’s surgery was elaborate and marked the first time this kind of breast reconstruction was done in Bayshore Community Hospital, said Dr. Samra. “My colleagues and I at Samra Plastic Surgery can offer our services to those who need reconstructive surgery and it can all be done right here in Holmdel at Bayshore Community Hospital.” As for Linda Grant’s surgery, Dr. Asaad Samra said, “I feel Linda’s journey highlights the resilience of the human spirit and demonstrates how together my patients and I, with perseverance, can accomplish great things.” The Holmdel office of Assad H. Samra, MD, FACS, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, is located at 733 North Beers Street, Suite U-1, Holmdel, New Jersey. If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

PROCEDURE In a 2 qt. pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add onions, celery, garlic, bay leave, thyme and sprinkle in a little salt and pepper. Using a whisk, stir and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. When vegetables are tender, add 1/2 cup of beer and let cook 1 minute, any longer may cause the soup to become bitter. Stir in flour to make a smooth consistency and cook 1 minute. Add the chicken broth and stir till smooth. Raise the heat a little to come to a boil, making sure you continually stir the soup until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat back to medium, stir occasionally for 15 minutes. Stir in cheddar cheese until all is melted. Raise the heat a little, add heavy cream, stir and bring back up to a boil. Gently pour, you want to keep the bubbles, the rest of the beer into the soup, stir and bring to a boil. Turn off stove and remove from the heat. Adjust seasoning with salt & pepper. Strain into a 1 1/2 qt. container. Serve with croutons on top. CROUTONS Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Using a regular crouton, sprinkle with a little cayenne pepper and toss. Lay croutons out on cookie tray and sprinkle cheese over top. Place in oven until cheese browns a little. Remove from oven. While croutons are still hot, remove them from the cookie sheet. *This original recipe was provided to our readers from David’s Culinary Delights – check out his services on page 47.

olts Neck Rockfest 2014 brought together over 20 phenomenal local bands who performed at Bucks Mill Park on September 20. The event, which was supported by the Colts Neck Business Association, drew a crowd of about 1,000 to 1,500 people from toddlers to senior citizens - throughout its 12-hour run. T-shirts and hoodies commemorating the event were sold and at the end of the night inventory was down to the bare minimum. Vendors selling hand-crafted goods and services, as well as food vendors were available to those who attended. Colts Neck Rockfest organizer and founder Steve Warendorf said the musical acts ranged from Reggae to Latin to Classic Rock to Original music. Those who performed were Santa Ray, Poppa John, Taylor Tote, Chasing Emm, Chris D and the Baby Seals, Dave McCarthy, Darren Panelli Band, SMA Project, Mood Ring, Xol Azul, Scott Elk, Bad Neighbors, Three Little Birds, 3-Chord Symphony, Random Test, Lisa and Wendy, The Working Men, Woodfish, Santa Ray and Fred the Elf, Moroccan Sheepherders, Upside, Strumberry Pie, and The Matt O’Ree Band. Comments heard from the audience included words such as Epic, Great, Perfect Day, and Organized. “It all worked out great! I wish I would have had the time to enjoy the day as a

We also may have outgrown the location,” said Warendorf. He highlighted the following volunteers who assisted him with the event. His wife Michelle who was in charge of the vendors; Jack Lind who built the bonfire and Rob DeCarolis who put it out; Martha Leonhart helped with parking and set-up; Glenn Taglieri, Joe Bongiovi, and Larry Duffy who also helped with set-up and cleanup; and Lisa Schlesinger who helped out with the merchandise table. “A huge thanks to Realtree Tree Service for donating all the wood for the fire; as well as a huge thanks to Sakoutis Brothers Disposal for once again letting us use the flatbed trailer as a stage,” said Warendorf. He added, “Another huge thank you to the Colts Neck Business Association for supporting Colts Neck Rockfest 2014! It was such a great day for everyone.”

X Celebrate Lunch Break’s 31 Years of Service at its Fifth Annual Gala
L
l
unch Break will host its fifth annual Gala, “Hope Happens Here,” celebrating 31 years of dedicated service to the community on Monday, October 20 at the Navesink Country Club, in Middletown. The evening will honor the steadfast commitment to the mission of Lunch Break by several individuals. Specifically, there will be presentations of the “Norma Todd Service Award” to Paul and Margo Hooker, the “Heart to Hand Award” to Inice Hennessy and Pamela Elam, the “Beacon of Service Award” to Carol Ingaro and Leigh Stoecker of Fringe Marketing, and the “Future Charitable Leaders Award” to Katie and Taylor Gill.
The evening will also include a spirited dinner reception, live and silent auctions, and a 50/50 raffle, with the entertainment provided by Brian Kirk and the Jirks. Formed in the early 1990s, Brian Kirk & The Jirks are one of the only bands in the East Coast circuit who can boast an impressive career spanning almost 2 decades! The secret of this success lies within 2 basic characteristics: 1) an amazing roster of musicians and 2) Brian’s ideals of having fun with the audience instead of performing to the audience.
38
As other bands come and go, Brian Kirk & The Jirks continually set the standard with tons of experience while thinking outside of the box. Brian will also serve as the master of ceremonies for the evening.
All net proceeds from the Hope Happens Here Gala will directly support Lunch Break’s critical programs. One
doesn’t have to look far to see the impact of the lingering economic downturn on the hungry and working poor among us. In fact, the New Jersey Poverty Research Institute concludes in a 2013 report that 25 percent of New Jersey residents are living in poverty. No wonder the demand

for Lunch Break’s services has grown dramatically. In fact, to respond to that increasing demand and better serve the community, Lunch Break launched “Step Up To The Plate,” its $5 million capital campaign in March to enlarge the size and increase the functionality of its facility. When the two-story addition is completed, the seating capacity in the dining room will be nearly doubled and there will be a new, larger, and more functional kitchen to serve the growing number of clients. The expansion will also provide space for a clothing “boutique,” a “choice food pantry,” reception and waiting areas, private social service and intake offices, a donation drop-off area, administrative offices, a conference and meeting room, data stations, a maintenance office, and restrooms. Tickets are $160 and may be purchased by visiting www. lunchbreak.org/gala. DIVORCE TALK
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.
NEW ALIMONY LAW On September 10, 2014 the governor signed the new alimony bill into law. It is effective immediately and makes several changes to our prior alimony laws. 1. Permanent alimony was eliminated and replaced with open durational alimony.
Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. For more information please see the firm’s website at www. par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.
2. In marriages of less than twenty years, alimony cannot be paid for a term longer than the marriage (except in exceptional circumstances). 3. Alimony may be modified upon the prospective retirement of the payor. In the past, only the actual retirement was considered. 4. When the payor reaches full retirement age, alimony is presumed to the end, unless good cause not to end
alimony is proven by the recipient. 5. A payor who wants to retire early must prove that the early retirement is reasonable and in good faith (e.g., not just to financially harm the recipient). 6. Full retirement age is defined as the age at which a person may receive full Social Security retirement benefits. 7. A comprehensive list of ten factors must be considered by the court when a non-self-employed person asks to modify his/her alimony obligation due to changed circumstances. 8. No request can be filed with the court until the period of unemployment and the inability to attain gainful employment exceeds 90 days. continued on next page >>

9. A separate set of factors must be considered when a self-employed party asks for a modification. 10. Alimony may be suspended or terminated if the recipient cohabits with another person in “… a mutually supportive, intimate personal relationship in which the couple has undertaken duties and privileges that are commonly associated with marriage…” 11. Living together on a fulltime basis is not an essential element of cohabitation. In fact, the court is prohibited from finding that a couple is not cohabitating just because they don’t live together on a fulltime basis! This new statute turns alimony law on its head. It affects couples who are getting divorced now, couples who will get divorced in the future, people presently paying alimony and people presently receiving alimony. How it affects each will ultimately depend on the facts of each case. What is clear is that nearly every case involving alimony will be affected.

Light Up a Memory This Christmas at St. Mary’s in Colts Neck `“Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s Church in Colts Neck, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. A special tree has been planted at St. Mary’s and its hundreds of lights will sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in St. Mary’s Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation. There will be a tree lighting ceremony on Saturday, December 13, after the 5:00 p.m. mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow all during the Christmas season, until the feast of “Little Christmas” on January 6, 2015. Holmdel First Aid & Friends Gather For Oktoberfest Event STORY SUSAN MURPHY
H
olmdel First Aid held their third Oktoberfest Wine and Beer Tasting fundraiser in the Red Barn located at Bayonet Farm in Holmdel on September 20. It was their first year utilizing the Red Barn which was spacious enough to accommodate 140 guests and over 20 walk-ins.
Wine Academy Superstores offered a large variety of wines for guests to taste. Christina Lenahan, Manager of the Hazlet Wine Academy Superstore who served the wine and answered questions about the various types said, “It is going well. There are some great wines and guests seem to be enjoying them.” Assisting the First Aid in this successful event were Dearborn Market, Casola Farms and Cabot (cheeses). Delicious hors d’oeuvres were set up buffet-style and were the perfect addition to the wine and beer tasting event. Guests were encouraged to purchase tickets for the chance to possibly win one of the 32 gift baskets available. These included gift cards from local business, baby items, Halloween décor, a Coach purse, Mikasa vase, candles and much more. Holmdel First Aid President Mike Nikolis expressed his gratitude to all of the volunteers who helped with donations, wrapped gift baskets, set up, made certain everything arrived on time and that all the loose ends were tied up before the event started. “It was a great turnout. Although the Squad is made up of individuals, we will come together when the need arises to help others. And as a group, we are capable of amazing things. The Holmdel First Aid Squad does not exist without the dedication of its members.”

First Annual Colts Neck Pet Fair Exceeds Expectations PHOTO CREDIT: ALL PAWS PET PHOTOGRAPHY
T
he first annual Colts Neck Pet Fair was held over Labor Day Weekend at the Bucks Mill Recreation Area. It was a great family event hosted by Performance Canine Association. Dogs of all breeds came with their owners to enjoy a family-friendly pet fair that showcased dozens of rescue groups, exciting canine-friendly activities, great entertainment and wonderful food.
Thousands of spectators and animal enthusiasts took part in lure coursing and box racing introductory practices sponsored by the Performance Canine Association. The Ultimate Air Dogs held their dock diving competition splashes and during non-competition sessions the public was permitted the opportunity to try their dogs at dog diving. Also showcased at this event were agility demonstrations by the Monmouth County 4-H Paw Pals Club who opened up their course to the public to introduce dogs to agility. The Wall Township Police K9 Unit gave an awesome demonstration. The Silver Knights Jousting Troupe wowed the crowd with their skills, speed and showmanship. They also met with the crowd for meet and greets and photo-ops. Bill’s Exotic Bird Show had birds performing various tricks, and Wolf Visions educated guests about wolf ownership in addition to allowing people opportunity to actually see a wolf up close. But most importantly, the main goal of the Colts Neck Pet Fair was to find loving homes for adoptable pets. And this goal was accomplished! One rescue alone, The Animal Welfare Fund of the Hamptons, had sixteen adoptions! A huge success! And other rescues like Castle of Dreams and Tails to Tale Rescue had a great number of applications for adoptions filled out by interested parties with the hope that these will turn into dozens and dozens of animals finding their forever homes. Nylabone donated a full size bag of Nylabone dog treats for each dog that attended this pet fair. The public paid a nominal fee for their dogs to try their paws at the other activities, dock diving, agility, lure coursing which is a fast-paced chase sport, and box racing in which dogs run out of a state-of-the-art starting box and chase a lure down a straight course 200 years long. Jo Wymer provided musical entertainment and Magic 98.3, FUN 107.1 and NJ 101.5 broadcasted live from the fair. Fireside Family Grill and Bar was the main food vendor, providing delicious pulled pork sandwiches. As guests were leaving they had an opportunity to give blood at the Central Jersey Blood Bank mobile unit just outside the entrance. Special thanks to the Colts Neck Volunteer Fire Department who used their tankers to rinse and refill all the doggie cool down pools, direct traffic, and fill the 40 foot pool for the Ultimate Air Dogs. A thanks to the Colts Neck Lions Club and many other volunteer organizations that assisted during this two-day fair. Thanks also to Yasenia of All Paws Pet Photography who was our Pet Fair photographer and did a phenomenal job. The Colts Neck Pet Fair was a huge success and the Colts Neck Community really helped to make this event absolutely wonderful for everyone attending, whether two feet or four paws. The Colts Neck Pet Fair will be back at Bucks Mill Recreation Area weekend of May 16, 2015 and we hope to see you and your four-legged friend there!

Village School PSA Sponsors Preschool and Kindergarten Event STORY SUSAN MURPHY | PHOTOS LAURA SHAY
V
illage School PSA sponsored a Preschool and Kindergarten Meet and Greet event on September 17. It was the first year for the Preschool and Kindergarten to have this event held at Village. There were 200 children in attendance. The Meet and Greet was specifically geared for the families of these students to get acquainted in a fun-filled social atmosphere. In order to make it easier for the young students to find other children in
their grades, preschoolers wore white shirts while kindergarteners wore green. A special concert was given by The Little Rockers Band, who performed a live, interactive and acoustic rock and roll show. The two band leads, Jessie and Chris, led the students in movement and music activities involving sticks, drums, scarves, eggs, and bells during the show. Alison Dailey, who is the mother of two Kindergarten children said, “This was a
warm and inviting atmosphere for the little ones to meet, greet and play! Thank you Village School PSA!” Snacks and playground fun topped off the two-hour event. Overall, the entire event was a huge success. “The large turnout was fantastic. It was a great reflection of the parent support at Village and seeing the smiles on the children’s faces was the best part,” said Kindergarten Committee Chair Laura Shay.

Holiday Express Clambake Raises $100,000 PHOTOS JOHN POSODA
The Holiday Express board takes a moment at the Clambake held at McCloone’s Pier House.
More than 300 people attended the 7th annual Holiday Express Clambake, sponsored by Shore Point Distributing Company, on September 14, 2014 on the beach at McLoone’s Pier House. An estimated $100,000 was raised to support Holiday Express’ mission, which is to deliver music, food, gifts, financial support, and friendship to those with the greatest need for the gift of human kindness during the holiday season and throughout the year. Attendees were treated to an evening of ocean breezes, a lavish buffet, dancing, and entertainment. The night was a huge success made possible by generous individuals and companies who donated money, time, and auction items. Established by Tim McLoone in 1993, Holiday Express is a non-profit organization, comprised of more than 1,500 volunteers, including 100 professional rock, jazz, folk,
gospel and pop musicians. Holiday Express visits, performs, and throws an interactive holiday party for more than 60 private charity programs from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. St. Benedict School Honors
International day of Peace in a BIG Way!
O
n September 19, 2014, the entire St. Benedict School in Holmdel, grades K-8, assembled outside their school for a special prayer service and song in honor of the International Day of Peace on September 21st. Led by Ms. Lilly, school principal, and orchestrated by Mrs. Mertz, the art teacher, the entire school gathered around a giant peace sign outlined in 475 pinwheels, each one made by a student in the school. All of the school recited the peace prayer of St. Francis and the ceremony concluded with a peace song, “I’ve Got Peace Like A River,” a touching close to a beautiful ceremony to send a message of peace and harmony in one little corner of the world to another. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two Art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their
feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first year, groups in over 1,325 locations throughout the world were spinning pinwheels on September 21st - there were approximately 500,000 pinwheels spinning throughout the world. Last year (year 9), 2013, over 4.5 million pinwheels were spinning in over 3,500 locations, including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South America. This project is non-political – peace doesn’t necessarily have to be associated with the conflict of war, it can be related to violence/intolerance in our daily lives, to peace of mind. To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning, but, in the end, it all comes down to a simple definition: “a state of calm and serenity, with no anxiety, the absence of violence, freedom from conflict or disagreement among people or groups of people.”

Mitchel Friedman and Julia Cintron are leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars and glowing timer toothbrushes in exchange for cavityprovoking candy. This Lincroft family dental practice has sponsored this event since 2009 with Comcast Spotlight. “On November 3, 2014 from 3:00-5:00pm, give up the candy to make a difference; that’s what we’re saying. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, however doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost,” says Dr. Friedman from Newman Springs Dental Care. “Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-ortreating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well. Plus, these FireFly glowing brushes we’re giving out are really cool—they light up for two minutes, the ideal time for brushing”, added Dr. Cintron. There will be snacks and the kids are encouraged to dress up. As a special bonus, there will be a drawing for several special prizes. Global sugar consumption for children increases by about 2% every year and is currently 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids’ teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children’s teeth, can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces.
Candy will be collected at Newman Springs Dental Care, 539 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft on the Monday after Halloween from 3:00 to 5:00pm. The candy must be unopened. Please no bites. It will then be shipped to our troops overseas thanks to Army Recreational Military Services (ARMS). ARMS’s goal for this year is to provide a care package for every tri-state area service member. Visit www.supportarms.org for more information on how to help ARMS achieve this goal or make a cash donation. Newman Springs Dental Care emphasizes general family dental care as well as cosmetic procedures. Both Drs. Cintron & Friedman as well as two dental hygienists are available Thursdays from 3:30 to 7:30 allow families to be treated at the same time after school and work. They offer several sedation options for the phobic dental patient. For more information please call 732.741.6444, or visit them on-line at www.NewmanSpringsDentalCare. com.

Services ranging from addiction treatment, transitional housing and counseling for those challenged by emotional and behavioral difficulties, to disaster response for survivors of Super-storm Sandy, are available through various Catholic Charities’ programs. Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Transitions from a Regional Chamber to a County Chamber The Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) is pleased to announce effective September 1, 2014, they transitioned from a Regional Chamber to a County Chamber under the new name, Monmouth County Chamber of Commerce. Over the upcoming months, the Chamber will launch a new brand identity including a new logo, slogan, website and a renewed focus as a valued resource for local businesses, organizations and fellow chambers. The decision to transition from a Regional Chamber to a County Chamber was based upon input from the Chamber’s Board of Directors and members to accommodate their expanding demographics and to position themselves to better support their civic and charitable endeavors throughout Monmouth County. The name change came after seeing success of their philanthropic efforts through their Beacon of Hope initiative. Beacon of Hope was formed in direct response to aide in relief of Hurricane Sandy. NMCC willingly and eagerly partnered with other organizations to assemble and operate a distribution center which was over 80,000 square feet located in Keyport. Beacon of Hope provided tangible resources to families, businesses, and organizations affected by Hurricane Sandy in Monmouth County and other regions of New Jersey.

Enjoys Adventurous Summer Troop 290 in the Bahamas, before boarding their campsite, the Ciganka sailboat!
Troop 290 practicing archery at Forestburgh Scout Reservation in NY this past summer.
T
his summer, BSA Troop 290 of Colts Neck went to Forestburgh Scout Reservation in NY, a year round camp owned and operated by Monmouth Council in NJ, and sailing in the Bahamas on Ciganka; a 30 foot sailboat! For many Scouts, this was their first time away from home without their parents. At Forestburgh, Scouts camped, cooked and participated in several merit badges like, swimming, first aid, lifesaving, environmental sciences, wilderness survival, finger printing, basketry, leatherwork, chess, woodwork, art, computers, etc. They made a lot of friends who were creative and thought of a lot of neat things to build, like the gateway entrances to the campsites. Troop 290’s scoutmaster, Mr. Daniels, taught the scouts many outdoor skills. Everybody put in a lot of effort into this camping trip, including the parents, and taught the scouts that if they really try hard, they can succeed in anything! The troop’s trip to Bahamas was a completely different learning experience. The scouts flew to the Bahamas and camped on the Ciganka sailboat for seven days, sailing the Caribbean seas each morning to see a new island, and snorkeling every day to explore the colorful marine life! Some scouts caught conch shells and brought them on the boat. The Scouts also caught fish off the back of the boat and the Captain showed them how to clean the fish for cooking. Ciganka was a one-of-a-kind experience which the scouts will cherish for a lifetime. Troop 290 had a very enriching summer with camping at Forestburgh and Bahamas. They have more exciting trips planned for coming months such as camping at Zombie Camporee at Quail Hill, NJ, Navy Camporee & Football in Maryland, day trip to Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell, Winterburg, ski trip and more. Boy Scouts is for boys 11-17 years old. You can join at any time. Please send an email to Join@Troop290.com and the troop will respond back. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, check out their website, www.Pack90NJ.com, or send an email to Join@pack90nj.com. Gives Central Jersey Businesses New Buying Power in a Sluggish Economy
What can be done? When the economic landscape changes, it’s time to adapt. More businesses have embraced the use of barter exchanges to supplement to their cash sales. For service businesses, barter turns idle time into productive time. For retailers, barter moves excess inventory. Barter conserves cash and boosts sales. For those looking to attract new customers, barter is a referral-magnet. BarterPays! is Central Jersey’s largest business-to-business barter exchange. Operating out of a quaint building that it owns on Route 9 in Western Monmouth, its friendly, family-like atmosphere belies its multi-million dollar transactional volume and broad geographic territory. Its members are disbursed throughout Monmouth, Middlesex, Ocean, Mercer, Union and Hudson counties. In 1993, Faye Alba, a one-time graphic designer, was encouraged by her friends to start a barter exchange in the Central Jersey area. With virtually no start-up capital and an unusual mix of abject fear and steely determination, Faye went to work. After more than 20 years, BarterPays! has far exceeded her expectations. Her company has grown to hundreds of local New Jersey businesses offering a wide array of goods and services. In a barter exchange, member businesses earn trade credits or “barter dollars” by providing goods and services to other members. Members can exchange their barter dollars if not satisfied. No other barter exchange offers such a guarantee of satisfaction. Said Alba, “What separates us from most other barter networks is our supervision in overseeing trades. Our active eye maintains the high level of quality and service that our members expect. BarterPays! is big enough for its members to enjoy the benefits of a large membership base, yet small enough for our team to work with each of our members. We work hard to drum up business for our members. If someone wants to inform others about an expanded services being offered, a limited-time special, or just generate some buzz, we spread the word.” Businesses know that they must market themselves to stay competitive. BarterPays! allows businesses that would have otherwise cut their marketing and advertising budget to continue building their business. Alba adds, “Members often generate cash business as well because of referrals made outside of the network. For many of our members, BarterPays! has become their indispensable tool to grow their business. I’m proud of that.” For more information about BarterPays! or to apply for membership, please call 732.364.4614 or visit www.barterpays.com.
Why join a barter exchange? BarterPays! members won 11 categories in 2014 Best of Monmouth!

f cash is king, barter is queen. Businesses are joining professional barter exchanges in droves, from entrepreneurial start-ups to established A-list businesses. The number of businesses participating in barter exchanges is at an all-time high fueled in no small part by changes in our economy. Today, virtually every business has excess capacity. It shows up in a variety of forms from professionals booking fewer billable hours to idle equipment to restaurants with open tables to retailers sitting on too much inventory.

membership cards to barter at retailers and restaurants. BarterPays! takes care of printing and distribution of new members’ advertising at no cost. Frequently, the staff calls and emails existing members to let them know there is someone new in the BarterPays! family. When you are a member, you have a powerful team, marketing and promoting the company. As a member generates barter dollars, they begin to offset current cash expenses, spending BarterPays! dollars instead. Often, new members use their new revenue stream for immediate, ongoing purchases, such as advertising, daycare, or water delivery. Others save to pay for a wedding or their child’s orthodontia, and some spend on the pleasures of life, including massage, fine jewelry, pizza, limousines, and sushi. BarterPays! dollars can be exchanged for other forms of barter currency upon request. We offer a 90-day money-back guarantee, if not delighted.
THE #1 REASON A BUSINESS ought to participate in a barter network is because they want more customers. If a company has capacity to accept additional business, whether it’s an attorney with open billable hours in their day, a hotel with unsold room nights, or open tables at a restaurant, gaining additional market share is the primary purpose and advantage to buy and sell in a barter exchange. If you’ve bartered on your own, you’ll find that belonging to a barter network gives you the chance to make additional exchanges more easily, and allows for more equitable trades, since you get to barter with lots of members in the Network, not just one-on-one. Being active in a barter network gives you a competitive edge. Members patronize participating businesses, because they save cash when they hire someone in their club. They pay for products and services with barter dollars, and spend their U.S. dollars for Happiness mortgage and taxes. Guaranteed! When a member joins the barter network, they receive a manual filled 732-364-4614 with barter info, membarterpays.com bers-only online access, invitations to exclusive, USE CODE #CM32014 for complimentary business FREE monthly service fees networking events, and for three months!
