Trick-or-Treating Tips 1.

Swords, knives, and other costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

2. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. 3. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. 4.

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

5. Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don’t run from house to house.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.

8. Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses. 9. Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. 10. Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

BEING HUMAN More Than Shy: How to Identify Anxiety in Children WE ALL WANT OUR CHILDREN TO BE HAPPY, social, and successful people. The truth is, while making new friends and trying new things is exciting for a lot of kids, many feel a great deal of anxiety when put in these situations. Often, children who experience anxiety are misunderstood as shy, or worse: stubborn, rude, or just plain “difficult.” Before you use one of these labels to describe a child in your life, it might be important to assess whether anxiety is the underlying cause. Here are 8 signs that your child may be experiencing significant levels of anxiety: 1 . Always worrying. The minds of children with anxiety are always racing. It may take them longer than most to answer a simple question, or they may demonstrate their worry with a constant barrage of “what if’s.” 2. Difficulty with new situations. While some children will be excited to make a new friend or take a trip to a new place, children with anxiety will react very differently. At a birthday party, they may hang back away from the crowd, or they may altogether refuse to attend.

14

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

3. Doesn’t do well with surprises. You might notice that your child does not do well with changes in routine. If children lose their cool when confronted with a schedule change, it may be due to anxiety. 4. School refusal. This is a common symptom of anxiety in children. Be careful not to label your children as “difficult” or “lazy” if they are refusing to attend school. Talk to your child’s teacher about how he or she is behaving in school to see if you can identify any triggers. 5. Physical symptoms that are unexplained by illness. Often, stress manifests itself in physical symptoms. Muscle tension, headaches, and stomach aches are all common among children with anxiety. If you have been to the doctor and can’t identify a cause, the trouble may be stress-related. 6. Sleep problems. Due to constant worry and physical ailments, children may be unable to sleep. Alternatively, they may be so exhausted from the stress of the day, that when they are finally in a safe, familiar environment, all they seem to do is sleep. Children 7-12 years old should be getting 10-11 hours of sleep per night. Those ages 12-18 should aim for 8-10 hours. 7. Eating issues. Children with significant levels of anxiety will often have difficulty eating regular meals, particularly in

environments they feel are stressful, such as school. Talk to your environments they feel are stressful, such as school. ABOUT COLTS NECK PTO All families of students enrolled in the Colts Neck Public School District are invited to join the Colts Neck PTO. Registered members of the Colts Neck PTO provide assistance directly in the classroom, as well as promote many programs through which our children grow and learn. Many of our programs are educational in nature and many are just plain fun. To foster a feeling of community and create a safe social setting for our children, we also organize student activities for all grades, beginning in second grade. The Colts Neck PTO is extremely active with more than 700 families as members. In the past few years, the PTO has raised more than $100,000. This money is used to fund all of our standing committees, in addition to fulfilling various school-wide requests. Some past requests included school signs at Conover Primary and Elementary, an automatic curtain for the stage at the Primary School, partial funding for a basketball court at the Elementary School, and gym equipment. And the Colts Neck PTO was instrumental in providing funding for the Primary School playground. The Colts Neck PTO is only as good as its members. It is the hard work and devotion of many that make the organization such a huge success.

OAK HILL ACADEMY STUDENTS IN THE LOWER SCHOOL TECH CENTER

Oak Hill Academy introduces its Lower School Technology Center Over the summer, Oak Hill Academy, a private Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school in Lincroft, renovated a section of a former classroom / library to make it a state-of-the-art Technology Center for its Lower school students as well as some Upper school language classes. The Lower School Tech center is located off the Upper school technology center and boasts 18 new desktop computers all newly wired for internet and network transfers, as well as an interactive Mimeo-board used in conjunction with the computers to host the Middlebury Interactive Spanish Program. Middlebury Interactive Spanish is an on-line distance learning program that begins in Kindergarten and utilizes the principles of the “immersive language pedagogy and teaching methodology used at the Middlebury College’s renowned Language Schools to help students gain a stronger base of comprehension and to accelerate learning.” The curriculum is filled with diverse, multimedia language activities that focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Foreign language teacher, Mrs. Ginger Koar, uses the program and its flexible implementation in her blended learning environment programs through eighth grade either as a primary or supplemental Spanish program. Spanish language program is not the only language being taught in this new facility. The Lower School Technology center is used for French language classes as well. In addition to foreign language instruction, the supplemental classroom may be used by Lower School teachers as an additional way to provide an enriching experience for students from their normal classroom environment. Teachers may use it for cross curricular or other cooperative learning lessons to enhance their curriculum of academic excellence.

Halloween Candy Buy Back in Lincroft to Benefit Our Active Duty Heroes Overseas NEWMAN SPRINGS DENTAL CARE is redefining the phrase “put your money where your mouth is”. This Halloween, trick-ortreaters can bring their excess candy to the Lincroft dental office and receive $1 per pound. Drs. Mitchel Friedman and Julia Cintron are leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars and glowing timer toothbrushes in exchange for cavity-provoking candy. This Lincroft family dental practice has sponsored this event since 2009 with Comcast Spotlight. They will also donate a tooth brush for every pound of candy collected. “On Monday, November 2nd from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., give up the candy to make a difference; that’s what we’re saying. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, however doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost,” says Dr. Friedman from Newman Springs Dental Care. “Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well. Plus, these FireFly glowing brushes we’re giving out are really cool - they light up for two minutes, the ideal time for brushing”, added Dr. Cintron. There will be snacks and the kids are encouraged to dress up. As a special bonus, there will be a drawing for several special prizes. Global sugar consumption for children increases by about 2% every year and is currently 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids’ teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children’s teeth, can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces. Candy will be collected at Newman Springs Dental Care, located at 539 Newman Springs Road Lincroft on the Monday after Halloween from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The candy must be unopened. No bites PLEASE! It will then be shipped to our troops overseas thanks to Army Recreational Military Services (ARMS). ARMS’s goal for this year is to provide a care package for every tri-state area service member. Visit www.supportarms. org for more information on how to help ARMS achieve this goal or make a cash donation. Newman Springs Dental Care emphasizes general family dental care as well as cosmetic procedures. Both Drs. Cintron & Friedman as well as two dental hygienists are available Thursdays from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. to allow families to be treated at the same time after school and work. They offer several sedation options for the phobic dental patient. For more information, please call 732.741.6444, or visit them online at www.NewmanSpringsDentalCare.com.

Holmdel First Aid Squad (HFAS) will hold its second annual 5k race on the Bell Works Property, located at 101 Crawfords Corner Road in Holmdel on October 17, 2015 with a start time of 9:30 a.m. “Our goal this year is to duplicate last year’s event, but make it even better,” said Holmdel First Aid Squad’s President Michael Nikolis. “This year we were able to secure Bell Works as our venue, and excited for the local population to get a preview of what this landmark has the potential to be.” The 5k will kick-off at 9:00 a.m. and run until 11:00 a.m. Participants and supporters should arrive at least a half hour early to prep and find parking. Those interested are strongly urged to pre-register for the race. Registration information for the 5k can be found at www. holmdelfirstaidsquad.org. Onsite registration will be available as well. Runner’s registration fee is $25. Event timing will be conducted by Viper Timing. citizens or nonprofit organizations perform that service. • Decreasing municipal costs of housing and euthanizing community cats. • Decreasing public safety concerns because TNR programs vaccinate cats against rabies.

MANAGING COMMUNITY CATS (feral and stray) can be a complex issue that concerns many municipal leaders and agencies mandated to serve and protect the public. Decades of trapping and removing these cats, with an almost guaranteed lethal outcome, have failed to reduce their numbers or improve the quality of life for cats or citizens. In addition, these strategies are costly to sustain and enforce, and they are generally unpopular with citizens. Policies intended to regulate pet cats and their owners do not work to reduce community cat populations who already exist outdoors and do not have “owners” in the traditional sense. Likewise, reactive, punitive strategies such as feeding bans have proven ineffective at managing community cats time and time again because it is impractical to think we can eliminate other sources of food – dumpsters, garbage cans, and rodents – which may have originally attracted cats to the area; enforcement is costly, difficult, and unpopular with the majority of citizens; and nothing is harder than trying to stop caring people from feeding cats in need. Instead, the HSUS supports strategic, nonlethal management of community cats who already exist outdoors through sterilization and vaccination efforts such as Trap-NeuterReturn (TNR). The goal of TNR is to reduce and eventually eliminate the number of community cats, as well as the nuisance behaviors and public health concerns associated with them. When TNR is conducted strategically and supported by municipal leaders and organizations, caring individuals who feed hungry cats can be mobilized to go beyond feeding to providing intervention services such as sterilization and vaccination. TNR programs have many benefits, including: • Decreasing municipal costs incurred by trapping community cats because private

20

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

• Decreasing nuisance complaints because spayed and neutered cats are less likely to fight over mates, food, and territory. Neutering also eliminates the pungent odor of male cat urine and decreases cat roaming. • Reducing or eliminating continued reproduction, which decreases the population of unowned outdoor cats and the transmission of feline diseases, which are largely spread through mating behavior and mating-related fighting. • Reducing predation on wildlife. Our publication, “Managing Community Cats: A Guide for Municipal Leaders,” as well as the many other resources on community cat management, provide information to give communities a roadmap and tool set for achieving joint goals. In addition to managing community cats, it is important to share information with pet owners about: spaying and neutering pet cats before they can reproduce at five months of age; keeping pet cats indoors, safely confined to their property, or walked on a harness and leash; and providing visible identification, so if pet cats go missing they can be reunited with their owners. These actions will help stem the tide of community cat overpopulation at its source. There are many free resources online, including studies and data about the effectiveness of TNR, as well as model ordinance language and other information. We hope you will consider reaching out to your town administrators to ensure your community is a healthier and safer place for people, cats, and wildlife. Our organization would welcome the opportunity to help create an effective and fiscally-responsible strategy for a community cat management program in your neighborhood. Visit www.humanesociety.org/ outdoorcats or www.animalsheltering.org/ communitycatsguide for more information.

his year, Holmdel voters have the opportunity to elect highly qualified Karen Strickland to the Holmdel Township Committee. A 17-year resident, Karen cares deeply about Holmdel and its future, has an impressive record of dedicated volunteer service, and would make an excellent Township Committeewoman. Karen is very concerned about the current Township Committee’s quiet rezoning of land – done without adequate public input and discussion – for inappropriate development on farmland in southern Holmdel (huge soccer/retail complex) and in a flood plain area in northern Holmdel (high-density housing). She believes that land development in Holmdel needs to be more carefully controlled to ensure that the unique beauty and environment of Holmdel is protected to maintain our quality of life with less traffic, less pollution, and lower taxes. As a six-year member of the Holmdel Board of Education, Karen worked with Township officials to develop a cost-effective plan for renovating Roggy Stadium with a durable, low-maintenance synthetic turf field. Previously restricted to limited single-sport/ single season use, the field is now used by multiple school and community sports teams year-round. As a mother of four children, Karen was active in the Village, Indian Hill, Satz and High School parent groups as well as in the

Incumbent Township Committeeman Thomas Critelli's mailer in last spring's primary said he'll work to change the zoning on Rt. 34 to entice more commercial development. In 2013, Critelli voted to replace all the Route 35 commercial zones, which were earlier planned for compatibility with the many nearby residences, with a much higher-intensity commercial zone that's likely to degrade the quality of life and property values of those residents. Then in 2014 he voted to even further intensify commercial zoning along Route 35, and he also introduced and voted for a rezoning ordinance to inject commercial zoning throughout the Route 34 corridor and even included a professional soccer complex. Mr. Critelli together with all current Township Committee members have been clear in their preferential treatment of development interests, as well as in their thinly veiled disdain for those residents whose quality of life and property values they eagerly sacrifice for the benefit of favored commercial developers. Since 2013, Thomas Critelli has strongly supported rezoning WITHOUT giving prior certified mail notice to those impacted homeowners living within 200 feet of the property to be rezoned – the aptly named “sneak rezoning”. It's easy to see that most large-scale commercial developments adversely impact the value of nearby residential properties, as towns with more commercial developments typically have higher tax rates. The overall result of intensified commercial development is lower home values for the nearby residents, and a higher property tax rate for all of a town's residents. Mr. Critelli's term on the Holmdel Township Committee has been a regrettable disservice to the interests of Holmdel's residents. I urge you to join me in voting for Reform Candidate Karen Strickland on November 3. ANTHONY COOPER | Holmdel

Three years ago we sincerely asked for your support to re-elect Mrs. Chiung-yin Cheng Liu to the Holmdel Board of Education. For this coming election, we couldn’t be happier or more confident to urge you once again to vote for Chiung-yin Cheng Liu. Since Mrs. Liu joined the BOE in 2009, she has worked diligently on behalf of Holmdel’s children and parents, advocating her 5 E’s of educational excellence (Empower, Enrich, Ensure, Enhance, and Enjoy) for the school district. Mrs. Liu continues to go above and beyond our expectations, addresses all our questions with patience, and assists us in finding the appropriate channels to express our concerns. Mrs. Liu has a

warm heart, and she genuinely cares about our children. She listens, she understands, and she voices our needs and concerns. Our friends have been expressing the same great comments about her as well. To better serve our school district with up-to-date knowledge and information, Mrs. Liu became a certified Master Board Member (awarded by the New Jersey School Board Association) in May after attending countless workshops and training sessions. Aside from her board of education duties, Mrs. Liu also volunteers her time serving as a Trustee for the Holmdel Foundation of Education Excellence. Having known Mrs. Liu for more than ten years, we have witnessed Mrs. Liu’s unwavering passion and commitment to education. With Mrs. Liu’s professional training as a teacher, collaborative working style, organizational skills, and a keen mind to analyze the pros and cons of any issue, Mrs. Liu is an invaluable asset to Holmdel. Please vote for Mrs. Chiung-yin Cheng Liu on Tuesday, November 3. LINDA LIN AND LAWRENCE TSAI Holmdel Residents

On Tuesday, November 3rd, registered voters in Holmdel have the opportunity to reelect Mrs. Chiung-Yin Cheng Liu to the Board of Education – an opportunity to continue the excellent work that Chiung-Yin has done for Holmdel’s school district. Her tireless commitment to Holmdel’s public schools speaks for itself, but I’d like to share my view, as a former board member, as to why ChiungYin deserves your vote. One of Chiung-Yin’s major strengths is her experience. She has been on the Board of Education for two terms – six years of dedicated service during which she has served on each of the standing committees. She is currently the chairperson of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee, the committee responsible for all of the academic initiatives, from pre-K through 12th grade, undertaken by the Holmdel school system. She is a strong advocate for academic programs that have the capacity to challenge all of Holmdel’s students, yet the flexibility to meet each of their individual academic needs. She is also a strong advocate for the arts, which comes from her

personal experience as a music teacher. She understands that education is enhanced when the arts are given their proper place in school. Chiung-Yin embraces education on a very personal level, as well. Since she started on the board, she not only earned her certification from the New Jersey School Boards Association, she also earned the 20 additional credits required to be designated a Master Board Member. She made the investment of her time and effort to become the most effective board member that she can be. Finally, you will always see Chiung-Yin at school events and meetings. As a mother of two children, a current Holmdel High School freshman and a college sophomore, she understands that her involvement is important to discover and address parental concerns. And, as a trustee of the Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence, she has a special understanding of the role the district’s volunteer community plays in its success. Chiung-Yin has a proven track-record – she will continue to provide the vision for Holmdel’s school district, continue to be the voice of reason. I cordially invite all Holmdel voters to, on November 3rd, choose the one candidate who stands above the rest – Chiung-Yin Cheng Liu. ROBIN WETMORE | Holmdel

It would be easy to simply rest upon the laurels of one of the best school districts in the country. But Holmdel School Board member Chiung-Yin Cheng Liu believes that a great school system must continually improve its curriculum and programing to prepare students for success in a dynamic and challenging world. That’s why she has been such a strong advocate behind a wide

array of initiatives within the district during her six-year tenure on the School Board— from putting more technology in the hands of our students to improvements in our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs to expanding Visual and Performing Arts offerings. She was also an early supporter of the High School’s new rotating schedule, because she understands that a 20th century approach to organizing a school day no longer meets the demands of the 21st century classroom. I’ve been consistently impressed by Chiung-Yin’s commitment, dedication and energy. She has been designated as a Master Board Member by the New Jersey School Boards Association, which recognizes the extensive outside training she has taken to become familiar with the complex issues facing school districts in New Jersey today. On top of that, Chiung-Yin has served as a trustee on the Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence (HFEE) while running her own business teaching music to local students. I’ve worked side by side with ChiungYin on several board committees that she chaired, including Curriculum & Instruction, Special Services and Community Relations. She balances a strong working relationship with our school administrators while never backing down from asking tough questions or pushing an issue that’s important to the interests of the community. Holmdel is fortunate to have a tireless and experienced volunteer and educator like Chiung-Yin working to protect the interests of our children. She deserves your vote on November 3rd for a new term on the Holmdel Township School Board. MIKE SOCKOL | Holmdel

The trampoline park’s Aberdeen location is pledging a portion of its October sales to Breast Intentions NJ, supporting their national mission to provide health education and crisis intervention for women facing breast cancer. “A big part of our philosophy at Air Trampoline Sports is promoting the health and well-being of our community,” said owner Ken Stone. “Breast Intentions does a tremendous amount of work fighting breast cancer. They make a huge difference in the lives of so many patients and families affected by the disease. Along with the satisfaction of supporting a great cause, you’ll receive a pink Breast Cancer Awareness bracelet for any additional contribution of $1 or more. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in the US, other than skin cancer. There are an estimated 231,840 new invasive cases in women in 2015 alone. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death among women after lung cancer. The ACS also reports that being overweight or obese is linked with an increased risk of cancers of the breast (among women after menopause). They also report that people who get moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity are at a lower risk of developing several cancers, including those of the breast. Along with diet, exercise and limited alcohol and tobacco consumption, regular screenings can often find breast cancer early when treatments are more likely to be successful.

HOLMDEL KIWANIS

5TH ANNUAL WINE TASTING AND PIG ROAST STORY SUSAN MURPHY

Kiwanis Club of Holmdel held its Fifth annual Wine

and Beer Tasting, Barbecue and Pig Roast on September 12, 2015 at the Dearborn Market Greenhouse in Holmdel.

There were 100 people in attendance, noted Holmdel

Kiwanis President Anu Khare, who co-chaired the event

with Treasurer Ted LaBarca. Kiwanis Club members from

Keyport, Marlboro, and Asbury Park also attended to show their support.

“We raffled off a wine basket and two round-trip

SeaStreak passes to New York,” said President Khare. “The passes were won by Anthony Affatati and the wine basket was won by Lauren Herchkowski. The gift raffle brought

in $435 and the 50/50 brought in $590,” she added. Food was provided by Dearborn Market. As in previous years at

this event, guests were encouraged to participate in the fun of karaoke. One of the newest additions this year was the

performance of a live band, Express Way, who entertained guests during the evening.

Funds raised from this event will help the community

and families in need. “As always, I am thrilled that the event

was a success and I find that very rewarding,” said President Khare. “To see our guests try out various wines and beers,

enjoy the spread provided, enjoy the live band, and have a great time while raising funds for the community makes the event a win-win for everyone.”

DIVORCE TALK

PROPERTY FAQs

PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ. Q: What property is subject to division in a divorce? A: New Jersey law requires an equitable distribution of all assets, whether real or personal, acquired during the marriage. In other words, assets acquired between the date of the marriage and the date on which the complaint for divorce was filed are generally subject to division. Q: Are there exceptions? A: The statutory exceptions are gifts from third parties (i.e., someone not your spouse) and inheritances. The legislature reasoned that dividing these assets would (1) bestow a windfall on the spouse who was not the recipient of the gift or inheritance since no effort was involved in the acquisition and (2) would defeat the intention of the gift giver or the decedent who clearly intended the asset to go to the designated spouse and not the other. Q: What is real and personal property? A: Real property is real estate – the house, commercial

real estate, vacant land, a condominium, etc. Personal property is everything else – cash, stock, pots and pans, cars, furniture, etc. Q: Is a house owned by one spouse prior to the marriage separate property and, thus, not subject to distribution? A: It depends. Almost certainly, the value of the house at the date of the marriage and any market appreciation on that value is separate property. However, various factors may create a marital asset in a portion of the increased equity that accumulated during the marriage. For example, paying down the mortgage with funds earned during the marriage may create a partial marital estate. Improvements (e.g., an addition, a swimming pool, etc.) may also create a partial marital asset. As in most areas of family law, the answer depends on the specific facts in each case. Q: Is a mutual fund that was owned prior to the marriage separate property?

A: If that mutual fund remained separate during the marriage, no marital funds were comingled with it, and no income generated by the fund was relied on to support the family or the marital lifestyle, it probably is. Comingling the fund with marital assets or relying on the income to support the marital lifestyle may change the answer. Q: Is an engagement ring a marital asset? A: Generally, no. New Jersey case law has pretty clearly concluded that an engagement ring (if given in advance of the marriage as they traditionally are) is a premarital, conditional gift. The condition is the marriage. Once the marriage takes place, the condition is met and the gift becomes the recipient’s premarital asset and not subject to the equitable distribution.

Bell Works – The Vision of the Future

MODERN TECHNOLOGY was born at Bell Labs. This hallowed ground was home to ingenious minds that contributed to some of the greatest technological advancements of the twentieth century – eight Nobel Prizes won. In 1959, world-renowned architect Eero Saarinen began designs for a work environment like the world had never seen, he was ahead of his time. The facility’s unique open plan enabled brilliant minds to roam, collaborate and converse - fostered by the seamless interplay between design and nature. This was the magnet that attracted many people to come work and live in our area. The foundation of Holmdel’s school system was being built and Newsweek’s most recent high school ranking placed Holmdel High School 41st in the United States.

Holmdel resident and Broker of Record, Owner at Maximillion LAVIN Realty, Jim Lavin, just signed a lease to move his business over to Bell Works, said, “This is going to be an amazing town center! It’s a dream come true, from seven years ago being on the first Holmdel Township's Lucent’s Advisory committee and seeing the vision of this project unfold.” He added, “With Sloan Kettering Medical Center close by, which will bring many jobs, the growth will pole vault our economy and help rebuild our depressed real estate values. It is going to be a win win for all.” Ralph Zucker, President of Somerset Developmet, is transforming a historic building into a community, teeming with culture, collaboration, and vitality. ORDER IN THE COURT! The chair acknowledges a local up and coming United Nations Delegate, Tiffany Kumar, who proved her worth by snatching the title of New Jersey Spokesmodel for the largest pageantry system in the country, the National American Miss Program. All areas of the harsh competition encourage unrelenting self-confidence, and emphasize endless important life skills like interviews and large scale public speaking. This eighth grader and aspiring diplomat currently attends school at Holmdel’s William R. Satz Middle School, where she claims the prestigious position of student council president, PR (Public Relations) of their school’s builder’s club (a volunteering community service program), and was honored to be awarded premier delegate for New Jersey’s top debate program last spring, Model United Nations. As well as taking the crown as New Jersey’s spokesmodel, she also won top 6th overall for Miss New Jersey herself, and won Miss Personality for the Pre-Teen division. She started off this campaign by vindicating herself at Miss All-American Monmouth County. Besides the lucrative cash awards and the famed golden ticket invitation to Hollywood to compete in the final National All-American Miss, Tiffany also will represent the State of New Jersey as Spokesmodel at the national finals in California this November. However, when she isn’t debating or speaking to a crowd, this Carnegie Hall pianist is either playing her favorite instrument or performing famous musicals onstage. She is thrilled to represent the county and state that she loves. Case closed!

It was truly a special evening highlighted by guest speaker, Nila Luccarelli of Dearborn Market in Holmdel. Nila shared an extraordinary personal story about her recent sudden and unexpected cardiac event which resulted in a frantic rush to the hospital and life-saving treatment. “We are so lucky to have Bayshore in our backyard,” Nila shared. “It is a wonderful hospital and I will forever be grateful for everyone who works there.” This year’s event, co-chaired once again by Fern and Peter Esposito, who have so generously dedicated their time to the event’s success since its inception, featured premium wines from around the globe, as well as international beers and spirits, an extensive array of hors d’oeuvres and a very special silent auction.

STRIKE A POSE Story Susan Murphy

Sophia is shown in the catalog of MonnaLisa, an Italian children’s clothing line for which she modeled in 2013.

Sophia Quintano, Lincroft Student,

M O D E L S I N N E W Y O R K FA S H I O N W E E K

Nine-year-old Sophia Quintano already knows how to prioritize and make the best of every day.

40

THE LINCROFT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL fourth grader not only loves school, especially reading and writing, but plans to participate in all the school activities she can, including chorus and band. Add this to the fact that Sophia has an impressive dance and gymnastic background, completing three years of tumbling and six years of jazz, tap, ballet, and lyrical, which she has been competing in for three years. She is entering her seventh year at L.A. Dance Center of the Arts in Lincroft and is also a Girl Scout in Troop 601. During the summer, Sophia is on a swim team and loves to surf. As full as her schedule is, Sophia still pursues something unique, enjoyable and exciting. “I started modeling three years ago when I was asked to model for Danskin. They came to our dance studio, and picked a few girls to do a shoot. My mom submitted some of the pictures to an agency in New York and my modeling career started. I am current-

ly signed with Product Model Management in New York,” she explains. How does Sophia fit modeling in with school, homework, and hobbies? “I love school and dance and if there's an important event I can’t or don’t want to miss, my Mom books me out for modeling. I keep up with my school work by doing my homework in the car.” Sophia’s mother, Dina, explains how she is able to handle all of these activities. “Sophia and her brother Alexander have busy schedules and with the help of many friends, I'm able to coordinate everything. Everyone is very understanding when she misses a class or is late to dance. The modeling moms are also very helpful; we help each other when we can and it is a very tight community. Sophia has made friends with many models and even though they go to the same casting, they all support each other.”

Most of Sophia’s modeling jobs are in New York, but she has traveled to Boston to do a shoot. Her favorite part of modeling is meeting new friends and many interesting people. She adds, “It is always exciting to meet celebrities. I also like seeing my pictures in magazines and in stores.” Sophia’s picture has been in Osh Kosh and JoAnn stores, as well as in Kids Wear, Vogue Bambini, Fashion Fusion and Mozi magazines. Some of the brand name clothing she has modeled for includes: Danskin, dance wear; MonnaLisa, Italian kids clothing line; Cuddl Duds, American PJs; Crazy Art, cover of packaging; McCall’s Pattern & Buttericks, cover of sewing patterns; Timberland Fall 2015, kids boots and clothing; Saks, ad for Saks 5th Avenue; and LittleMissMatched, which will be in stores and in catalogs this holiday. Sophia received the title of East Coast USA’s National Supermodel Supreme on July 26, 2015. “The East Coast USA Pageant is a fun event. There is no make-up permitted and they swab your face before you go on stage to be sure you are not wearing any,” she says. The combined scores from the beauty competition and the highest scoring three optional events are added up and models are then placed. “I was really surprised and excited to be chosen for this title. You know you won something big when you aren't called up in your age division.” Sophia’s mother, Dina, says of the pageant, “I was very excited for Sophia. She really loves this pageant. She competed with many of her friends and it was amazing watching them all have fun and support each other. She will keep the title until next year when she crowns her successor. Meanwhile, Sophia will participate in several fundraisers and attend the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the reigning title holders. East Coast USA is a big supporter of CDMF, a foundation established in memory of Christopher DeCrescito, who was killed by a drunk driver on February 27, 2013.” Another highlight for Sophia was participating in New York Fashion Week! “To participate in New York Fashion Week, you usually have to go to a casting and then when you are picked to walk, you go for a fitting and practice the walk. This year, I walked for Bound by The Crown Couture (BBTC). BBTC was formed by celebrity designer Susanna Paliotta.” Being in the heart of New York Fashion Week is amazing, and to be a part of it at the age of nine is unbelievable! “It was a really exciting experience,” says Sophia, “and I got to walk with all my model friends,

which made it more special.” Sophia walked during New York Fashion Week on September 13, 2015; and also last fall for Betty Tran. Sophia hadn't planned to pursue a career in modeling before the Danskin photo shoot three years ago. “I never thought I would be a model, it just happened.” For other young girls interested in modeling, Sophia explains how it was in the beginning. “It was a rough start, with many trips to New York, and lots of rejection. Just persevere and keep on trying, and in the end it can be really fulfilling and fun.” Sophia’s mother shares how Sophia was before modeling and how she is now. “When she started modeling, she was very, very shy. Now, she's more confident and outgoing. She learned how to accept rejection and move on to the next opportunity.” When asked if there were any special people in her life who keep her focused and guided, Sophia didn't hesitate to answer, “My Mom and my Dad! Dina and Steven.” The busy life of this young girl has been ongoing for several years. Two years ago, Sophia was an extra in two films, Keep in Touch and A Most Violent Year. She was an extra, along with her older brother Alexander, in the television series Blue Bloods and Blacklist; as well as Billions which will air this fall. Sophia has starred in various videos, most recently hair style tutorials for Cozy Hair. She walked the Atlantic City Fashion Week last fall and this spring for Lainy Gold Kids. Sophia walked four times in the Vogue Bambini Petite Parade; twice in 2013 and twice in 2014, during the spring and falls shows. As far as her future in modeling, Sophia was not certain. “I would like to continue, but it will be difficult as school gets harder and more important. Most of the shoots take place during the day.” On where she feels Sophia is headed in her future, her mother responds, “I’m not sure. As long as she likes modeling she will continue, but as soon as she is ready to stop, we will. Sophia likes school, dance, and playing with her friends, so it's always a balancing act. It's been a great journey so far and she's participated in some amazing shoots and events.

Sophia gets to experience the glamour of New York and still be a regular girl in New Jersey.”

Sophia is calm and radiant as she walks the runway on September 13, 2015 during New York Fashion Week. PHOTO CREDIT: MARTELLI PHOTOGRAPHY

J. Vincent Jewelers Announces MAJOR INVENTORY LIQUIDATION SALE

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT J. VINCENT JEWELERS, VISIT WWW.JVINCENT. COM. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE INVENTORY LIQUIDATION, CONTACT JACKIE BROOKS AT JACKIE@ BOTTOMLINEBLACK.COM OR 303.658.0019 OR KENDALL KENNEDY AT KENDALL@ BOTTOMLINEBLACK.COM OR 561.791.6295.

Anyone living in Monmouth County knows that J. Vincent Jewelers is the area’s “hometown” jeweler. J. Vincent is famous for its stunning and unique pieces. Unfortunately, that, combined with Joseph Brando’s incredible love for jewelry and designing, has created an excess inventory situation. Due to that fact, along with the speculation of an uncertain upcoming holiday season, this month Joseph Vincent Brando is happy to announce a brief multi-million Dollar Inventory Liquidation Sale, which will include a tremendous collection of fine jewelry and designer gems. The event is currently open to the public. Brando, a product of Queens, N.Y., entered the jewelry industry decades ago as an independent salesman for a fine diamond and gold jewelry importer from Italy. After moving to Colts Neck, he was inspired to open up his own store to do what he loves to do on a daily basis: create unique jewelry, in a personal manner, in hopes of making dreams come true. Brando has seen the business thrive in his many years operating J. Vincent Jewelers, however, through those years an inventory of incredible size, diversity and interest has been accumulated. Brando went on to say in speaking of this matter, “Regretfully, that means we have a huge excess inventory. To make matters worse, our aggressive purchases of new merchandise at this year’s jewelry shows have compounded the problem. In order to solve it, we have decided to conduct a relatively

brief, but huge, inventory liquidation sale. The sale will help to solidify our financial position, as well as make room for new and exciting pieces, for the years to come.” Brando and his dedicated staff have reviewed the company’s vaults to locate the multi-million dollar collection of quality diamonds, diamond engagement rings, colored gemstone jewelry and designer gems to be offered in the sale. During this spectacular sale, everything in the J. Vincent inventory will be offered at sacrifice prices – as much as 60% off original ticketed prices. Everything must be sold. With regard to this oncein-a-lifetime event, Brando remarked, “I am going to give the people I love, in the area I love, the savings they deserve! I guarantee they have never seen discounts like this or a business this serious about clearing inventory.” J. Vincent Jewelers is an independent jeweler owned and operated by Joseph Brando. J. Vincent is proud to represent fine diamond, jewelry and watch brands like Forevermark, Edward Mirell, Chrysalis, Bronzllure, Belle-etoie, Michele, Daniel Wellington, Luminox, Nixon, Perrelet, and TW Steel. “This is the type of event that only comes along once-in-a-lifetime. I am liquidating the same, highquality, fine jewelry that I see all year long. I just can’t wait any longer to clear this old inventory to get all my new designs on the shelves for the holidays!”

Lincroft resident Lisa Miele is no stranger to marathons. In 2014, she ran her first marathon in Napa Valley, California on March 2, 2014 and her second in New York City on November 2, 2014. Her third was in Boston on April 20, 2015. She will be running her fourth marathon this month when she participates in the 40th U.S. Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, Virginia on October 25, 2015. “I am running and fundraising on behalf of Massachusetts Fallen Heroes. Headquartered in Boston, MassachusettsFallen Heroes was established in 2010 by Boston firefighters, local Veterans, Gold Star Families, Police Officers, and other patriotic citizens,” Miele Lincroft resident Lisa Miele nears the end of her run in the April 20, 2015 Boston Marathon. explained. She noted that Massachusetts Fallen Heroes is comprised of a group of Veterans and Gold Star family members who have experienced the hardships of war firsthand and understand that its impact does not end upon a service member’s return home. Massachusetts Fallen Heroes understands the enduring impact on those families who did not have a loved one return home. Miele said that Massachusetts Fallen Heroes proudly partners with a network of Massachusetts civilian organizations, veterans organizations, non-profits, and private corporations who kindly donate their professional services to assist in the process of providing local veterans and their families with specialized assistance. More information can be found at https://www.massfallenheroes.org/. When Miele ran the Boston Marathon in April, 2015 on behalf of One Mission, she raised just under $14,000 for children with cancer. Once Miele decides on who she will run for, it is literally full speed ahead in her mind, body, and especially her heart. Although she only started running in July, 2010, Miele trains extensively for each marathon and totally devotes herself to the specific cause. “I am running this marathon to help honor the memories of the Massachusetts men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and gave their lives for our nation. A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. I am humbled to run in honor of our U.S. Marine Corps,” said Miele. Donations that will help our heroes can be made at https://www.crowdrise.com/MFHMCM/fundraiser/lisamiele. Collaborating for the Greater Community Ranney School Students Team Up to Give Back Community service has always been something Ranney School students take pride in doing. From our elementary aged students collecting Halloween costumes for their peers in need and sweeping the local beaches for trash, to the high school students spending their free time at local hospitals, tutoring centers and soup kitchens, the Ranney student does not shy away from contributing to make their world a better place. This year, Ranney, an Age 3-Grade 12 independent school located in Tinton Falls, has launched a new community service collaborative called “Panthers with a Purpose.” The name was inspired by the school’s mascot and the goal of the collaborative is to make an even larger impact throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties by streamlining students’ various efforts to focus on three major campus initiatives. “The community service collaborative came together at the opportune moment,” said Tracy Mutchiga, Ranney’s Director of Community Engagement. “The three ideals in the school’s new mission statement (Lead Honorably, Think Creatively and Contribute Meaningfully) are at the heart of the new program. By coordinating school-wide community service initiatives, every student, every family and every faculty member will be able to participate in some way and our students in all three divisions (Lower, Middle and Upper School) will have opportunities to take on leadership roles on campus and out in the greater community.” The first Panthers with a Purpose project includes multiple opportunities for the community to get involved. Starting October 1 and culminating with the school’s Homecoming Weekend (October 16-18), the school will hold a food drive to benefit the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The school is hoping to collect at least 5,600 pounds of food for its 56th anniversary. In addition to collecting items, students will participate in fun activities related to the drive (such as guessing the total weight of the donated items) and have a chance to learn more about hunger-related issues in the area. In addition, the school community will join two major awareness walks happening this fall– the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Point Pleasant, and the CROP Walk for Hunger in Red Bank, both taking place Sunday, October 18. Students and teachers from across the Ranney’s Lower, Middle and Upper Schools will head up the school’s teams. For more information on Ranney School what students are doing to make a difference, please visit the school’s website at www.ranneyschool.org.

Warrick Dunn Charities Partners With Aaron’s, Monmouth County Habitat for Humanity to Surprise Displaced Sandy Victim Warrick Dunn Charities (WDC) partnered with Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County and Aaron’s Inc. to surprise Hurricane Sandy victim and grandmother, Ana Henn with necessities for a new start in life. Ana lost her home to Hurricane Sandy in October 2012; it was deemed unsafe and unlivable. This was a tragic blow after losing her husband earlier in the year. Ana Henn received the ultimate surprise in September, as she walked into a re-established life with her grandchild in tow. Warrick Dunn Charities and volunteers spent days filling the Henn home, a Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County rebuild. The surprise was held in front of dozens of volunteers, friends and family. Program partner, Aaron’s, Inc provided furniture for the Henn family. In addition, Ana Henn also received $5,000 as home reconstruction assistance, a benefit of WDC’s Homes for the Holidays program. Fully stocking and furnishing the home was also made possible thanks to donor and friends of Warrick Dunn Charities. The Homes for the Holidays (HFTH) program founded in 1997 by Warrick Dunn, former National Football League (NFL) all-pro running back and philanthropist supports single parents that are first-time homebuyers. The program has served 144 single parents and over 380 dependents in 14 markets across the country. Homes for the Holidays was created in honor of Dunn’s late mother, Betty Smothers, a Baton Rouge police officer who was killed during an after-hours security shift, in pursuit of her dream of homeownership. “This is the moment that we have been hoping to celebrate for years...a Hurricane Sandy Survivor. That is what Ana Henn is to us. She has overcome extremely tough situations and never gave up. We are privileged to assist her with this new beginning. Thanks to great partners like Aaron’s Inc. and our Habitat for Humanity family; together, we were able to provide a comfortable home, beyond tragedy, for the Henn family,” said Warrick Dunn, Founder of Warrick Dunn Charities. Despite her misfortunes, Ana generates enthusiasm and has been a wonderful partner for Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County.

Morro Castle Author Program & Sandy Benefit at Old First Church in October IMAGINE THE TERROR onboard the luxury cruise ship Morro Castle as flames engulfed it in the early morning hours of September 8, 1934. Passengers had to make a choice – burn alive or jump into raging nor’easter seas off the New Jersey coast. Many took that plunge and perished; bodies washed up on local beaches for days. It was a horrific experience for those who had booked a pleasure cruise from New York to Havana, Cuba to escape the grip of the Great Depression. In the aftermath, thousands of sightseers viewed the smoldering wreck of the great ship which drifted and grounded itself just off Convention Hall in Asbury Park. For over eighty years, mystery has surrounded the Morro Castle tragedy – the sudden death of its captain, the unknown cause of the fire and the loss of 137 lives. The Morro Castle program with Deborah Whitcraft and Gretchen Coyle, co-authors of Inferno at Sea, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Old First Church, located at 69 Kings Highway in Middletown, will relive one of the greatest NJ maritime disasters. There are stories of death and survival, with rescue efforts by Jersey Shore people standing as hallmarks to heroism. Extensive research by the authors presents a fresh perspective on the Morro Castle tragedy. The program will be followed by a reception brunch and book signing. Copies of the co-authors’ 2012 large folio book, Inferno at Sea, Stories of Death and Survival Aboard the Morro Castle, will be available. Deborah C. Whitcraft, twice mayor of Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, NJ, is the founder and president of the NJ Maritime Museum in Beach Haven. Gretchen F. All proceeds from the program and brunch will benefit the purchase of building materials for Churches Accomplishing Long Term Recovery (CALTR), a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization of volunteer construction workers dedicated to home reconstruction for Jersey Shore victims of Superstorm Sandy. Your attendance at this event will help put Sandy victims back into their homes! Advance reservations for the Morro Castle program and brunch are encouraged. To make your reservation, please send a check payable to CALTR for

$20.00 to: Old First Church, 69 Kings Highway, Middletown, NJ, 07748. Please note: the deadline for advance reservations is Tuesday, October 20. Door admission on October 24, the day of the program, will be $25.00. Call 732.758.8144 for more information. About CALTR Churches Accomplishing Long-term Recovery (CALTR) is mobilizing a new sector of volunteers to assist in repairing storm-damaged houses at the Jersey shore. Unemployed people who want to learn construction skills are being paired with high-skilled volunteers who work beside and teach them on the job. In the past two months, eight more properties

have been improved, bringing to 114 the number of homes restored through the classis-wide efforts of CALTR. Unemployed volunteers who previously thought they were in no position to help are now enjoying teamwork and doing good to others, restoring homes for grateful families while adding skills to their resume. They completed a roofing job in Middletown, constructed a shed in Union Beach, removed a deck from a foundation in Clifton Beach to prepare for elevating the house ten feet, and did demolition of a house beyond repair in Keansburg so the homeowner could construct a new dwelling. When worksites are not too far away, CALTR utilizes Community Church of Keyport to warm up and eat lunch, thanks to the church’s lunchtime feeding program. Consistory is active in identifying houses for CALTR to repair and in offering CALTR’s help to homeowners. Middlebush Reformed Church recently provided a work team of pastor and congregants to construct the rafters for roofing a house in Union Beach, and has organized a drywall team to contribute their skills periodically. Metuchen Reformed Church is set to accommodate and provide meals to a weeklong team that will be arriving from an out-of-state church. Colts Neck Reformed Church sent seven volunteers to the Interfaith Day of Service CALTR held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, joined by two Muslim volunteers from a local Turkish community, five members of Reformed Church of Highland Park, and two volunteers through WorkFirst NJ. With teamwork among our churches, leadership by CALTR’s staff and steering committee, and administrative support from our CDC, CALTR takes our Classis of New Brunswick to new heights of giving neighborly love to those who can use it. Email caltr2015@gmail.com to participate.

Lincroft Fire Company Station 10 Ladies Auxiliary is planning their fall Ladies Night Out with a Hi-Lo Game to be held on November 11, 2015 at the firehouse on Newman Springs Road. If you have never played Hi-Lo, now is the time to learn. No skills are required but you must be able to laugh and enjoy yourself! This much-anticipated night is serious business for those who attend. Tickets may be purchased for the gift auction which includes items from local businesses. Bringing in food such as party appetizers, cheese and crackers, fruit platters, and many beverages of choice, adds to the delight of everyone. Groups of friends share a table as well as their food and before long the firehouse is filled with laughter. Dessert, coffee and tea are also available. One of the best parts about Hi-Lo is that there are multiple winners in each game and guests select their prize from a basket of wrapped gifts. Doors usually open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is $10 per person. There is a limit to the number of persons who can occupy the area of the firehouse where the game is held, so advance ticket purchases are a good idea. For ticket or event information, contact Maria Dunn at 732.345.9525. The Ladies Auxiliary is a support group for the Lincroft Volunteer Fire Company and the women provide assistance with various functions, such as helping to coordinate fundraisers, as well as supply food/beverages to the volunteer firefighters who remain “on call” at the firehouse when there is a state of emergency. The have also purchased warm socks and hoods for the firemen. It is important to note that most of the needs of each volunteer fire company in Middletown are met by contributions from the community. Any additional assistance given by the Ladies Auxiliary is truly appreciated. Ladies Auxiliary President Bridget Matthews encourages the ladies in the community to become members of the Lincroft Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. The fun is inevitable, the laughter contagious, and the reward of helping our firefighters is priceless!

Colts Neck Business Association OCTOBER UPDATE THE CNBA CONTINUES ITS EFFORT to formulate a marketing and branding plan for the town of Colts Neck and its business district. Committees have been formed and will focus on a strategy to improve and protect the town’s brand and visibility while balancing the upscale rural demographic that makes the area special. Over the course of the next few months, The CNBA will be working with the county and township on a blueprint to articulate the vision, forward these goals and focus on raising the stature and attractiveness of the treasure that is The Crossroads at Colts Neck. The CNBA will be meeting with local officials and residents to communicate the developments and milestones as they look forward to a refreshing and forward moving improvement of this jewel we call Colts Neck. On September 19 and 20, the CNBA supported the 8th annual Colts Neck Rockfest. This ultra-popular community event drew audience and bands from throughout the state and highlights talent from teenage bands to world class professional and renowned musicians. The shows promote live music and the arts for children and adults alike - we look forward to seeing you there next year. CNBA will be holding their next local networking event at the prestigious Trump National Golf Club on October 13, 2015. These events are free to members and all are welcome. Over 120 ticket holders toured four farms, which included Wellspring Stables, Colts Neck Stables, Yellowbrook Farm/Helen Goddard LLC and Stillwell Stables as well as a tour of the beautiful Four JGs Vineyards. The tour began with coffee and apple cider donuts donated by Delicious Orchards and ended with an old-fashioned BBQ plus entertainment by Jilly Sentino at Stillwell Stables. Sponsors of the 2015 Colts Neck Barn Tour included Investors Bank along with Carol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin of Stillwell Stables. An Historic Evening with Anne Frank’s Stepsister Jewish organizations, schools, and Chabad Centers in the greater

Monmouth area are set to host an historic evening with Mrs. Eva Schloss of London, UK on October 13, 2015 at Marlboro Middle School Auditorium in Marlboro, NJ. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with the program starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18.00 per person for adults, $10 for teens and students and $90.00 for VIP seats including a ‘meet and greet”. Mrs. Schloss will share her experiences as a childhood friend of Anne Frank, including accounts of the publishing of Anne's most

famed diary: The Diary of Anne Frank. The presentation will be suitable for teenagers and families of all faiths.

This is a unique and special opportunity to hear a first-hand account from someone whose life intersected with one of the most

widely read and compelling figures in modern history. To learn more

about Anne Frank’s childhood before the Holocaust as well as what

happened to her father, Mrs. Schloss’ stepfather, after the Holocaust, please join us for this important presentation.

In 1938, Germany invaded Austria, causing many Jewish families

Eva survived her concentration camp experience and made

her way to England, where she married Zvi Schloss and raised three daughters. She worked as a studio photographer and ran an antique shop.

Her stepsister perished after she was shipped from Auschwitz

to Bergen Belsen. Yet, the diary she kept survived and has become

one of the most widely read holocaust stories. Her name was Anne Frank.

Since 1985, Eva Schloss has devoted herself to holocaust

education and global peace. She has recounted her wartime experiences in more than one thousand speaking engagements.

She has written three books and has had a play written about her

life. In 1999 Eva signed the Anne Frank Peace Declaration along

with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and the niece of Raul Wallenberg, a legendary figure who rescued thousands of Jews in Budapest.

Eva joins many courageous individuals who work tirelessly to

end the violence and bigotry that continue to plague our world.

Eva’s story is sensational and difficult to imagine, yet her insightful

message reminds us that life is precious and fragile, that the creative spirit is stronger than fear, that the power of good is immeasurable, and that love makes a difference.

Comedy Night with The Clergy

A minister, a priest and a rabbi walk into a bar… On Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. a real local priest, minister, and rabbi will be sharing these jokes, and lots of others poking fun at each of our traditions. This is in the spirit of fun and unity, an evening to bring together various congregations to enjoy an evening of laughter. Rabbi Larry Malinger, Rev. Matt Thiringer, and Rev. Rusty Eidmann-Hicks are the three clergy, coming from Temple Shalom in Aberdeen, Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Keyport, and Holmdel Community Church in Holmdel. The comedy night will be held in the newly renovated hall at the Holmdel Community Church, located at 40 W. Main Street (Route 520) in Holmdel. All are welcome. A small donation is requested to help cover light refreshments, and any funds left over will be donated to the Keyport Food Pantry.

To participate in the Math-A-Thon, students obtained financial sponsors and completed grade-level math problems both online and in booklet form. “Students were able to use the Math-a-Thon problems to review math concepts and skills they learned earlier in the school year while raising funds for a cause. The students also generously donated their fundraising prizes back to the children of St. Jude’s,” said Mrs. Laura Goodrow. The education-based fundraiser was coordinated by Ranney Upper School teacher Laura Goodrow and Middle School teachers Jane Guadagno, Judy Kelly and Carol Ann Rofrano.

Hundreds of Jewish women from around Monmouth County are expected to join a Mega Challah Bake on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the Radisson Hotel, located at 50 Gibson Place in Freehold. Registration is at 6:00 pm, doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7:00 p.m. The event is jointly hosted by the Chabad of Western Monmouth County, Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel and the Friendship Circle of Central Jersey. The ‘Mega Challah Bake’ event has been held in major cities around the world in the past few months, drawing thousands of women together. Last year's event in Freehold was a huge success, with more than 360 women and girls from all walks of life, backgrounds and affiliations in attendance. This year's Mega Challah Bake promises to be even bigger and better. “This type of event empowers women in the sense that we can feel that we are part of something much bigger, united with Jewish women in our city and Jewish women throughout the world,” said Tova Chazanow, co-director of Chabad of Western Monmouth County. “It’s a beautiful show of unity for all sections of the Jewish community to come together, drawing women from all affiliations.” For tickets and for reservations for the event, go to www.challahbakenj.com or call Chabad at 732.972.3687.
