Creating Your Landscape Vision Starts Now

SWEATER WEATHER! evergreens a landscape design that will suit your needs.

Autumn has arrived, bringing with it that crisp and refreshing air I love so much. Forecast for me is happiness. October, hands down, is my favorite month of the year, the fall foliage will soon be at its peak, and we get to marvel at the magnificent canopies of color throughout our neighborhoods. What a sight! And let’s not forget the other nickname – football weather – how I missed Sunday Funday (and Thursday, and Monday).

My Name is My Reputation

There are 30 Monmouth County Parks and Lincroft resident Jennifer Bernabeo and her two sons, Hudson and Chase, spent their summer exploring all of them. From historic sites to the shores of the Navesink River, these explorers had a summer they won’t forget. CM wrote about their journey in this edition, check it out on page 42! A “SIT DOWN” WITH BOBBY CIASULLI Car Mogul, check. Firefighter, check. Actor, check. As CM Editor Shanna Polignone said, “he is one of the most inspiring people I’ve had the chance to get to know” – we couldn’t agree more! That’s why this month we called a sit down with Bobby Ciasulli at The Colts Neck General Store & Deli (his spot, or at least one of them). See page 36. Enjoy CM’s October issue, we appreciate your support. To our advertising partners and our readers, we thank you. Best,

COMMUNITY CHURCH HELD SPECIAL

SEPTEMBER 11TH

Memorial Service

e will never forget the day. day. forget the

On September 11, 2001 our nation was shaken to its very core. We all remember where we were, what we were doing, and who we were with when the World Trade Center towers went down. Yet what was meant for evil, our country has transformed into an emblem of solidarity and perseverance. On September 11, 2016, Colts Neck Community Church commemorated the 15-year anniversary of the tragic 9/11 attacks with a memorial service for the town of Colts Neck. The evening was highly attended with over 325 people present. This included the leaders of all the towns’ churches, Colts Neck Mayor Tom Orgo and township committee members,

Colts Neck’s First Responders, Monmouth County Freeholders Lillian Burry, Serena DiMaso, Tom Arnone, and Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden. Colts Neck Community Church’s Pastor, Chris Durkin, began the service by welcoming all the visitors and Reverend Scott Brown of Colts Neck Reformed Church offered a poignant and thoughtful opening prayer. The Colts Neck Boy Scouts raised the American flag as Captain Jay Steingold, Commander of Naval Weapons Station Earle, lead the pledge of allegiance. The national anthem was beautifully performed by John’s Crossing and Absolute Music and the service included inspiring music from the Atiles Sisters, a 9/11 testimony from Gilda Healy of Middletown, a Scripture reading from Colts Neck Community Church’s Associate Pastor Jim Quigley and a prayer of protection for

our first responders. Pastor Chris encouraged the audience during his message, “The cross standing in the heart of the devastation on 9/11 reminds us, even in the face of unspeakable violence, God’s grace is present.” The evening concluded with a beautiful candle lighting memorial. The crowd was invited to stand and process by Colts Neck’s 9/11 Memorial as they paid respect to those who lost their lives on that tragic day.

This memorial service was a reminder that we must never forget the lives that were lost and the heroic sacrifices that were made.

Holmdel Police Department Continues to Celebrate 50 Years of Service! The Holmdel Police Department will hold its 50th Anniversary Ball on November 4, 2016 at the Grand Marquis in Old Bridge. A true community event celebrating Holmdel’s men and women in blue, the night will include a cocktail hour, five-hour open bar, full course dinner and of course – music and dancing. Holmdel Mayor Eric Hinds shared, “We are grateful to have an extraordinary police force lead today by Chief John Mioduszewski. Let’s join in the celebration.” The Department hopes that many residents, former employees, Mayors, Administrators, and Committee Members will take the time to attend. To reserve tables or for more information, contact Mike Piggott at mpiggot@holmdelpolice.org or Mike Michalski at mmichalski@ holmdelpolice.org. The Holmdel Township Police Department was formally established by a Township Committee Ordinance in 1966. In that year, under the leadership of Chief Joseph Phillips, the Department answered 540 calls for service. In 2015, the Town has grown substantially and Police handle closer to 25,000 calls for service each year.

963 Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733

Current Holmdel Chief Mioduszewski had organized a committee to plan for the Department’s 50th Anniversary. Their first task was to design a “50th Anniversary Logo” which is displayed on commemorative pins and decals on the Patrol cars. In addition, officers have been wearing an “anniversary badge” throughout 2016 - all of which were obtained through donation. In March 2016, the Department took possession of a 1964 Ford Galaxie, a replica of the Department's first patrol car. The vehicle is displayed on the lawn at Town Hall and will be used for community programs.

Members modeling their “Sale treasures” at last year’s October meeting. It’s October, Halloween time! St. Mary’s Martha Mary Guild is not into “Trick or Treat” – they are offering a “Triple Treat” for the October 12, 2016 meeting. The first “treat” is the induction of new members and the recommitment of current members, with Deacon Vincent Rinaldi presiding – this ceremony will be held in the Spiritual Center chapel at 7:00 p.m. Immediately following the ceremony, everyone is invited to Madonna Hall for the “culinary treat”, which is a Potluck Supper. There will be a variety of wonderful dishes, which the members contribute. The third “treat” is always lots of fun – a Fashion Show of items that members purchased at the Guild’s Clothing Sale, which was held in September.

17 th Annual Library Fine Art Show D

ON’T MISS

the 17th Annual Colts Neck Friends of the Library Fine Art Show and Sale starting with the Meet the Artists wine tasting and opening reception on Friday, October 14, 2016 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. for a suggested $10.00 donation at the door. Come see the diversity of the many talented artists who call Colts Neck home. There is always a large variety of media and artistic styles, so you will be sure to find that unique piece to enhance your home décor! This annual show is a cultural event supporting the library with 20% of sales going to the Friends of the Library Foundation to fund library programs and improvements. The gallery will be open to the public for two consecutive weekends: Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, and Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will also be a free presentation by art historian, Fred Dixon, on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. focusing on “Matisse vs. Picasso: The Great I-Can-Do-Anything-Better-Than-You Rivalry.” Hear how the fascination with each other’s work became almost an obsession with the two giant figures of 20th century art. From the day they first met, each knew the other was doing something he could not do himself. One of the most intense rivalries in the history of art shows us how competition stimulates growth and flashes of genius. See how they bounced off each other, out did each other and honored each other. Dixon, also the author of the monumental work 700 Years of Art History: Pre-Renaissance to Modernism, will be signing discounted copies of his book after the presentation. He and his wife, Martha Dixon, were trained docents at the Barnes Foundation for a decade, and they have appreciated, studied, and collected art far longer. This program is free and there is no registration needed!

UNBROKEN WARRIORS Spreading PTSD Awareness with Local Events

STORY SUSAN MURHPHY

Christine and Michael Dowens (third and fourth from left) flanked by volunteers at the Inaugural Touch-a-Truck event held on September 10, 2016 at Dearborn Market.

O

N SEPTEMBER 10, 2016, Unbroken Warriors held its first annual Touch-a-Truck fundraiser in the fields behind Dearborn Market in Holmdel. The event was meant to bring continued awareness, as well as raise funds for veterans suffering

from PTSD. Michael Dowens, a Navy veteran who has PTSD and a Holmdel Police Officer, has been actively reaching out to the community to share his story. In June, he completed a three-day, 37-mile trek from the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel, New Jersey to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Dowens also revived a challenge started several years ago that consists of 22 push-ups for 22 days at $2.00 a day. “This symbolizes the 22 veterans who commit suicide a day. Doing 22 push-ups a day for 22 days is symbolizing a struggle and a challenge, just as many veterans face,” noted Dowens.

The Touch-a-Truck event brought an estimated 1,300 people, said Dowens’ wife

Christine, one of the Unbroken Warriors’ Board of Directors. She works closely with her husband in planning events, tracking donations, taking videos of the push-up challenges and posting them on Facebook. Events such as the family-friendly Touch-a-Truck bring the community together and give the Dowens’ family a chance to share their story. “We raised $8,336!” said Christine after the event. “It was an unreasonably hot day at 100+ degrees, but all the children had smiles on their faces and enjoyed meeting the real community workers who use these vehicles. It’s like meeting a celebrity to these young ones!”

Many local groups and officials who attended to show their support were Holmdel

Committeeman Michael Nikolis, Freeholder Serena DiMaso, Middletown Mayor Gary Scharfenberger, the entire Unbroken Warriors Board of Trustees, the Holmdel Police Explorers Unit, Holmdel PBA members #239, Holmdel Police Chief Mioduszewski, Holmdel Police Captain Allocco, Middletown PBA members #124, Middletown Chief Weber, Middletown Lt. Terefenko, Members of the Dennis Zilinksi Memorial Fund, Holmdel Mayor Hinds, many members of the Holmdel Rescue Squad and Holmdel Fire Department, Holmdel Department of Public Works, Monmouth County Highway Division, Monmouth County Sheriff’s office, high school volunteers from the Jackson wrestling team and from Holmdel High School, members of VFW post 133, and representatives from the Saker Group (owners of Dearborn Market).

Michael Dowens shared what the day meant to him. “For our first time running this

event, I think it went rather well! To make the kids happy, including our son and nieces, while making money for veterans is a win-win. We have already told Dearborn we’d love to have this event again if they’ll invite us back! They so generously donated their land to us, so none of this was possible without their flexibility and open-mindedness to our vision.”

They ended their walk about 11:45 p.m. September 17, 2016 at Tommy’s Tap and Tavern in Sea Bright. Dozens of people joined them and walked as long as they could throughout the Shore Walk. The Dowens handed out PTSD fact sheets all along their walk. “We would like to thank Jack’s Goal Line Stand Family Restaurant and Bar in Long Branch for not only donating $122, but for opening their doors to us during the early morning hours. They had coffee and waters waiting and made everyone breakfast sandwiches at no cost. They truly wanted to support our efforts. And thanks to Tommy’s Tap and Tavern for donating pizza to our guests,” said Christine. She noted that anyone who walked gave $22, and businesses, where they stopped for the push-up challenge videos, donated in advance at least $122 or more. Passers-by gave donations, as well as the walkers. Those donations reached $1,609. Christine added, “People who read about our efforts donated online as well and we raised roughly $2,000 online. That continues to rise!”

I am writing in support of Mayor Eric Hinds and Mike Nikolis running for re-election and election respectively. I have lived in Holmdel my entire life and am now raising my family here. I didn’t realize until I went to college how fortunate I was to be raised in such a wonderful place. As a child, we were afforded so many memorable experiences thanks to Ines Csulak and her recreation department that offered so many opportunities for families to get together with others in our community to celebrate our hometown. My husband and I attended all four schools here in Holmdel and our children are going through them now. I work very hard volunteering in all the schools, township, church and more trying to recreate the memories I had as a child for my family, trying to bring it all back yet also wanting our town to move forward and offer the best of the best. Eric Hinds saw this and knew me as he coached both of my sons when they were younger and our families became friendly. When he ran for Township Committee, I voted for him because of the experience I had with him as a leader and a coach for our teams and I could envision the success he’d have being a leader in our town. After he had some experience on Township Committee, he approached me and asked if I would help him. He knew I was connected to many families in town through my volunteerism. He knew I grew up here and how much I love Holmdel and he knew I had the history and the future of what could be in mind and we felt the same about keeping the Holmdel

momentum moving forward. So, we started working together, brainstorming, getting feedback from families, seniors, from all residents on what they would want in Holmdel; what the positives and negatives are; how we could collaborate with all…HE WANTED THIS and to this point I had never experienced anyone as excited about the possibilities nor anyone who wanted it bad enough that he would do all he could to make it happen. It’s been almost three years now since I accepted his offer to help. This man who has a full time paying job as a Senior VP at Merrill Lynch, who also coaches, who also sits on various charities and who as the Mayor of this town has paid me out of his own pocket for three years to help him make Holmdel GREAT-ER. It means that much to him and I am proud to work with him. Most have no idea the time and energy he gives to our town; some of it is visible, some not. He is ALWAYS working for Holmdel. His heart and soul is in this town, he grew up in Monmouth County, he knows what it was like too. He has created many successful programs already such as the Community Clean-up day, the monthly electronic Newsletter, the Networking Event which takes care of our own graduates. It’s time to get Holmdel going again, it’s happening, we are slowly coming back; Bell Works is big and it’s awesome and it’s a start. Now we need more and he wants it for us, for all of us. Mike Nikolis does too. Mike Nikolis is President of First Aid and has served on many committees in town for many years and he cares so much about this community where he is raising his two children who are in Village and Satz Schools now. His wife grew up here with me too. They get it…they know what it could become and Mike is one of the most honest and fair and upfront people I know. He is a perfect addition to our Township Committee. He is a dedicated first responder and he is everywhere; always volunteering and helping all in town from scouts to chaperoning Project Graduation. He’s here and wants to be a part of the solution, he has so much to contribute. Holmdel would truly benefit having Mike Nikolis as part of our leadership. I am not a political person. It’s not about politics, it’s about improving our community. I would not still be working for Eric if I thought he was anything but an honest, motivated leader with a huge heart who truly wants the best for all of the residents. Those who know me know this is true…I would walk away. I’m not going anywhere because these two men can lead us where we belong, we are well on our way because of them and I am so grateful. Please vote for Eric Hinds and Mike Nikolis on November 8th. DEBBIE BROWN | Holmdel

We are so pleased that Mrs. Chiung-yin Cheng Liu will be running again for the Holmdel Board of Education this coming November. Holmdel needs an advocate, with no personal agenda, who will sincerely listen and give a voice to all parents and students. Along with passion, we also need a candidate who has experience in education and a proven track record as a member of BOE. Mrs. Liu has served two terms as a Holmdel BOE member, and chaired the following committees: Curriculum and Instruction, Community Relation and Special Services. She is a certified Master Board Member by the New Jersey School Board Association, continued on page 28

a professionally trained and certified classroom teacher and college instructor. As demonstrated during her terms, she has successfully combined her experience, passion, with her ability to execute and follow through. Her advocacy for integrating STEM into our curriculum has resulted in new course offerings in the high school, such as Introduction to Research, and Introduction to Engineering. Other initiatives that Mrs. Liu was an ardent supporter of includes the high school rotating schedule and the 6th grade departmentalization, where each subject is taught by a teacher specialized in that subject. In addition, Mrs. Liu has also served as a trustee for the Holmdel Foundation of Education Excellence, which through the Chromebook initiative has made chromebooks available to every student from grades 2-6 to further enhance their classroom experience. Having known Mrs. Liu for close to twenty years, we can attest to her professionalism, integrity, and unwavering dedication and commitment to education. With Mrs. Liu’s professional training as a teacher, collaborative working style, organizational skills, and a keen mind to analyze the pros and cons of any issue, Mrs. Liu is an invaluable asset to Holmdel. Please join us in voting for Mrs. Chiung-yin Cheng Liu on Tuesday, November 8.

Dear Mayor Hinds, I am writing to express to you my utmost appreciation for creating and running the Networking Event at Bell Works on May 25, 2016. I am extremely impressed with how successful it was. It is truly impressive the number of companies that took part in the event and the overall prestige that they commanded. As a rising senior in the Engineering School at Rutgers University, I have gone out of my way to find every opportunity to broaden my social reach, learn what type of work I want to do, and find where my first job will be. It is without a doubt that your event was the most productive and helpful event I have attended in accomplishing those goals. During the event, I had friendly and meaningful conversations with all of the companies, which I felt, helped me build a strong networking connection with them. It also provided more insight into companies that I had not necessarily considered but became much more appealing to me. This is a drastic change for the methodical and scripted conversations I typically have at the other Career days and Networking Events. Again, thank you for setting it up and I look forward to attending it again next year!

Dear Mayor Hinds, I just wanted to take a brief moment of your time to personally thank you for the job fair Networking event at Bell Works. I was one of the many lucky students to successfully land an internship through the event. Though obtaining an internship is a task most college students undertake, I’m sure we are all aware of how competitive applying for one is. I currently attend the Jack Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University. Though my business school provides me with a vast amount of knowledge and experience, it lacks something that could give someone an edge in the job market. An extremely prestigious university name. Without a name like Harvard, Villanova, or Princeton on my application I am simply subject to be just a number in a pile of applications. Even though I am highly involved on campus, have straight A’s, and an active member in my community, I still felt that I was unable to really make a lasting impression through an application on a piece of paper. Luckily enough, I was granted the opportunity to make a lasting impression at the event you set up. Through the event, I was able to land an amazing internship through a company called Corporate Bailout. I personally feel that the sole reason I was able to obtain this internship was me being able to sell myself in a face to face environment and to ultimately stand out from a pile of applications. The job fair not only provided me an internship, but also will allow me to graduate on time. At the beginning of the summer I had originally had an internship lined up through a brokerage on Wall Street. Unfortunately, the brokerage started to see some financial difficulty, so they cut their internship program right before the beginning of the summer. Since my University requires me to undertake an internship, it seemed almost impossible to land a summer internship one month before the start of the summer. But as I mentioned before, I was fortunate enough to land the position I have with Corporate Bail Out and save my college career. Again thank you so much for providing me with the opportunity to succeed. I hope that the Net Working at Bell Works event will continue to be an annual event. I am confident that I can speak for the rest of the students and recent graduates that attended, that we all benefited from the event whether it be by landing a job, an internship, or simply even adding people to our personal networks. I can only imagine what future benefits and opportunities the event can provide myself as well as the rest of the Holmdel community while we all continue to gain valuable experience while building even more professional resumes. Thank you again.

(CNBA) hosted its 7th annual Pig Roast, “The Last Days of Summer” at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. The Community Center was to capacity and the room was filled with music, energy and tradition. The crowd, approximately 145 tickets sold, was attended by state dignitaries, local officials and businesses, as well as residents from various Monmouth County towns. Event organizer Mike Tormey and his team, who included - Anna Appolonia, Patty Vollherbst, Alison Antenuuci, Carolyn Burtnick, Rich Yaeger, David Sokoler, Sheila Olt, Ann and Dud Hager and Tom Corley - once again pulled off a wonderful community-based event.

Tormey noted, “The event is growing every year. And we couldn't

do it without Janice Rizzo who coordinates all the food and serving the food besides the pig!” This year’s pig roaster was John Merla and entertainment was provided by The Hashtags, a local Jersey Shore band. Special thanks to Ann and Dud Hager who donated the centerpieces, Tom Orgo for donating the ice and hay stacks. There are many patrons of this annual event who buy tables every year, and special recognition goes out to Glen Dalakian, Lisa Aldridge, DeFalco Realty, Investors Bank, Tom Corley, Mike Fitzpatrick, Sheila Olt, the Colts Neck Exchange, and NWS Earle. will be brought before the judge within two weeks when another brief hearing will occur. Depending on the facts and circumstances, the judge can send the non-payor back to jail again until he pays. Usually this process ends with payment, but it sometimes plays out several times before the non-payor realizes the seriousness of the issue. Non-payors, who the court finds do not have the financial ability to comply are released because no amount of jail time will force someone to pay what he doesn’t have or can’t get with a reasonable effort. Non-payors often boast that jail is “no big deal” and that they aren’t intimidated by the threat of incarceration. In most cases, this bravado quickly fades when the steel bars clang closed, the jail uniform is issued, and a cell is assigned. Complying with court orders, as unpleasant as it may sometimes seem, can be a lot less onerous than not complying.

obby Ciasulli, third generation of a family of car dealers, volunteer firefighter, reality TV star, and actor, is one of the most inspiring people I’ve had the chance to get to know. He is filled with a passion - fueled energy, and a charismatic style that pulls you in to get to know him and leaves you wanting to chase after your own dreams. While chatting with him at The Colts Neck General Store & Deli, I realized Bobby is living and creating a life that keeps him grounded in his roots but allows him to follow his heart, chase after his passions and be a part of something bigger than himself. Bobby is the Corporate Director and General Manager for two of the six dealerships owned by his family, Galaxy Toyota in Eatontown and Honda Universe in Lakewood. He began working for his family as a child, his first job was to keep the cars clean, then he

moved on to the parts department, the body shop, became the service advisor and ultimately to the position he holds now. The car industry is in his blood, his family has owned dealerships throughout New Jersey for over 50 years and it’s only natural that he is thriving in that environment. Outside of growing up with a focus in cars, one of Bobby’s passions as a child was to create home movies with friends. They would create short films “Mission Impossible” style; jumping off roofs and participating in other daring acts for the camera. As he talks about his memories, a smile crosses his face, confirming where his true Everyone has one thing in their life passion lies; in acting. ness was cars, it was just natural to think that was where his future would be focused, and although he will always be in the car business, he is walking through the doors of acting and film that are being opened for him. Bobby’s on-camera television debut was with the Ciasulli dealership commercials; however, his love of the screen and his current fame was sparked with his role in the monster Reality TV show, “Real Housewives of New Jersey”; where Bobby and his friends starred as the cast of Season 6 which aired on Bravo in 2014. However, it was a chance encounter with a couple he sat next to on a plane, that he wasn’t scheduled to be on, which opened the doors of fate and officially broke the ice into his current acting career. That couple saw a spark in Bobby and cast him in a Mob parody film called “Good Friday”. Since then

the acting opportunities seem to be snowballing into new roles and what seems to be fate-filled connections. While filming “Good Friday”, Bobby met and bonded with Actor/ Producer Paul Mormando. Excited by the energy between the two of them, Paul decided Bobby would be his next co-star, a script was written by Paul’s wife Anna, and the result was “Bound by Debt”, a film now currently in production. “Bound by Debt” features Paul and Bobby as brothers who are fighting to protect their family. Filled with action, martial arts and suspense, the script follows the style of film Bobby enjoyed making as a child. More projects he is involved in is “A Wound in Time” and very soon he will be filming “Up on Sugar Hill” – both projects take place in the Bronx. During the filming of “Bound by Debt”, a picture posted on social media would connect him and get him involved with writer, producer and film maker David Zucker, Bobby is now working with him on upcoming projects. Its exciting to see where each new step takes him and he is enjoying the ride, knowing that he is exactly where he is supposed to be; right in the middle of living a childhood dream that had sat dormant for so long, But acting and cars certainly isn’t all there is when it comes to Bobby. Bobby also stands as Second Lieutenant for the Colts Neck Fire Department #2. His desire to work more closely with members of the community began in 2012, when New Jersey was struck by Superstorm Sandy. The State and Colts Neck were in despair. Bobby was invited to spend the days after the storm at the Colts Neck Fire Department, where he would have access to all necessities for survival that he was at the time without; power, food, heat and running water. It was during that time that Bobby saw firsthand all the local fire department does for the community. He was reminded again of one of those things he always said he wanted to do as

a kid, but was sidetracked until that point. By the end of his stay at the firehouse, Bobby knew what he had to do, he took the steps to become a firefighter himself, and after 200+ hours of training; he became a member of the Colts Neck Fire Department. Being that Bobby has the ability to combine his career with his passion and his desire to give back, he has since created the First Responders Buying Program at his dealership. The First Responders Buying Program gives all first responders the best deal on their car purchases. He is proud to be able to make a difference and to support those who do the same for our community. When asked how he spends his spare time, he laughed and replied, “I’m always on call and always doing something”. He shared how he can be found at the gym and that he has been an avid collector of art with a great appreciation for it. He also enjoys riding his motorcycle, and of course spending time with his family and friends. Bobby stated, “Everyone has one thing in their life they are passionate about” – Bobby’s is “creating something and then being able to sit back and watch it happen”. He added, “once that light on the camera goes on, everything changes, it’s like filming those home movies, it pulls you back to the passion”. Creating and making this happen is what Bobby is doing and with all the topics we touched on, Bobby closed our conversation with his greatest accomplishment, his twin 16-year-old girls Vanessa and Brianna and his 15-yearold son Bobby. Passion is what Bobby Ciasulli is about, and how he is living, he is experiencing his dreams in full with family and friends by his side. With the car business as his roots, he is making sure to grab hold of the opportunities he has, to be part of something more. He is proving that childhood dreams can come true.

Regular readers of The Table know we absorb motivational and success material with relevant parallels in business, investing and life. This month we continue our series of the “7 Keys To Success” to explore effective habits with parallels to family, business and finance, (1) identify specific goals, (2) write down your action plan, (3) have nonstop determination to reach your goal, (4) turn your goals into genuine service which helps others, (5) follow an unfailing code of honesty and integrity, (6) be creative and have willingness to try the untried, (7) faith and an absolute belief that you will succeed. #4 TURN YOUR GOALS INTO A GENUINE SERVICE WHICH HELPS OTHERS This week we explore Habit #4 – Turning your goals into a GENUINE service that will help others. If you were realistic about your life, you’d probably recognize that you only achieve the majority of your worthwhile goals with the positive outcome and involvement of others. The best way to get what you want is to help others get what they want. The more your activities benefit others around you, the faster and more easily you will achieve your own goals. This is the absolute key to the classic Dale Carnegie “How to Win Friends and Influence People” - genuinely make others feel important, validated and understood and your relationships will reward you. There is a law of nature (and spirituality) that time has proved to be unfailing, what you sow is what you reap, and what you give is what you receive. This is true of every opportunity you’ll ever encounter no matter how important or how small it may seem at the time. Always give more than you expect to receive in return, when you look back at it, you’ll find you usually get back more than you bargained for. This is a good way to live, and the basis of true philanthropy and how all great advisors, leaders and professionals run their practices. Always turn your goals into a genuine service that will benefit others. TIP OF THE MONTH STRATEGIC PHILANTHROPY – SMART GIVING There are few things that make the human psyche feel better than making someone else happy and feeling generous. Philanthropic giving is on the rise in the U.S. - total giving in the U.S. now represents approximately 2% of gross domestic product and accounted for a staggering $358.38B (Billion with a

“B”!) - up 5.4% from 2013. However, it’s not always easy to know where to begin when it comes to setting up a philanthropic plan and there is NO shortage of worthwhile causes and places that want and need your generosity. The choices for giving vehicles are everywhere, ranging from community, religious, foundations and giving circles to direct gifts, private foundations and donor-advised funds. Each option also has unique characteristics, and if you get organized, you can reap the benefits of tax deductibility for you and your family. Strategic philanthropy requires as much of the giver’s intellect as it does the bank account. A careful and disciplined approach to philanthropic giving combines purpose, practicality and passion. It can help you increase the effectiveness of your giving, align that giving with what’s in your heart, reflect, and protect, our intent as donors, and respond to changing social and economic conditions. We are also starting to see families use an investing approach called “impact investing” to connect philanthropic vision with investing strategy. Increasingly, impact investing is attractive to and being driven by millennials, who tend to be more socially and environmentally conscious. According to the 2014 Deloitte Millennial Survey, nearly 30% of millennials believe the number one priority of both persons and business should be to improve community and society, believing business can and should do more to address society’s challenges of resource scarcity and income inequality. Speak to your trusted advisor to see how organizing your generosity and giving can benefit both you and your worthwhile causes.

Adventure in the Parks Lincroft Family Visits 30 Monmouth County Parks

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

Park 30 of 30: Left to right: Freeholder Lillian Burry and the Bernabeos (Hudson, Chase, Jennifer and Clay) at Mt Mitchill Scenic Overlook.

T

his past summer, Lincroft resident Jennifer Bernabeo combined fun, history, hiking, and family time into one amazing adventure for her two sons Hudson, 9 and Chase, 5. Though only living in Lincroft for four years, the Bernabeos have lived in several counties of New Jersey and New York before choosing to raise their family here. “Because of our travels, we know what Monmouth County has done through its park system and it is unmatched,” she said. So while visiting Shark River Park in Wall in June, she mentioned to her sons that since it was the beginning of summer, they could visit all the parks. “My nineyear-old took the idea literally and wanted to visit as many as we could. By the time we visited the Parks website and found out there were 30 parks, the idea was already planted in his head. We then decided to make it our goal. We listed the parks and checked them off after each visit.” Starting on June 26, 2016, when school

42

let out, Jennifer, Hudson, and Chase visited the following 30 Monmouth County Parks and posted their journey on Facebook. Beginning with fossiling at Shark River Park, Wall, they included visits to Turkey Swamp Park, Freehold; Tatum Park, Middletown; Big Brook Park, Marlboro; Holmdel Park, Holmdel; Historic Longstreet Farm, Holmdel; Hartshorne Woods Park, Highlands; Huber Woods Park, Middletown; Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth; Manasquan Reservoir, Howell; Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown; Wolf Hill Reception Area, Oceanport; Clayton Park, Freehold; Historic Walnford, Freehold; Crosswicks Creek Park, Freehold; Dorbrook Recreation Area, Colts Neck; Perrineville Lake Park, Millstone; Union Transportation Trail, Freehold; Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area, Manasquan; Fort Monmouth Recreation Center, Tinton Falls; Manasquan River Greenway, Howell; Henry Hudson Trail, Highlands; Swimming River Park, Red Bank; Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Long Branch;

Monmouth Cove Marina, Port Monmouth; Weltz Park, Oakhurst; Thompson Park, Lincroft; Metedeconk River Greenway, Brick; East Freehold Showgrounds, Freehold; and ended their journey at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, Atlantic Highlands on September 11, 2016, where they visited the Mt. Mitchill 9/11 Memorial. Jennifer said the Monmouth County Parks System website gave detailed information about each park including the address and specific activities available at each. Most of the time, she and the boys did their own exploring, such as skating/biking, fishing, hiking, and playing. “Sometimes the boys would tell the park staff about our goal while we were at a park and they were always very responsive and friendly. I can’t say enough about the park staff. They were always so helpful and full of information. You can tell when somebody loves their job, and that’s what I sensed when I talked with any of the park staff,” said Jennifer. She shared some of the highlights of their trip. “While visiting

Historic Walnford, a most patient Al of the park system opened up the family estate and gave us a private tour, teaching my eager boys about the life and times of the historic site. At Wolf Hill, we tried our hand at the 18-hole disc golf course. When bystander Josh from Good Karma Disc Golf saw my boys trying the sport for the first time, he rummaged through his equipment and gave my kids some of his starter discs, happy to see children learning a sport he so clearly enjoys. Some other highlights included finding four bald eagles on the Manasquan Reservoir boat tour, beachcombing at Bayshore, hiking at Tatum, camping at Turkey Swamp, and biking along Thompson’s 5-mile loop.” Aside from the genuine fun she and her boys had at each park, there were opportunities to revisit history, see firsthand how life was long ago, and learn important environmental lessons. “We learned about the significance of James Garfield and other presidents in Long Branch, the workings of a 19th century farm at Historic Longstreet in Holmdel, and the area’s Native American history at Huber Woods in Middletown. Besides our own findings of plants and animals along the way, we learned more through the parks environmental centers,” said Jennifer. Each park offered a different outdoor experience for the family. Jennifer shared, “My oldest son Hudson really loved all of the parks by water, especially kayaking in the Metedeconk River. He has a great eye for finding animals so he never misses a frog, crab or turtle that’s nearby.” The favorite park for younger son Chase was Seven Presidents Park. “Because to him a perfect day is spent on the beach and playground!” Jennifer couldn’t choose a favorite park. “I can’t pick just one because I loved them all for different reasons. It used to be that some of the parks held special memories for me, such as Chase’s first art and music classes, Hudson’s first day camp or our first family camping trip with the scouts. But now we’ve formed more memories in ALL of the parks, so they’re all special.” The boys shared their overall feelings about the summer-long adventure at the 30 parks. Hudson said, “I want to go back to all of them. It was so much fun. I brought my net with me and found crabs, frogs,

and other animals.” Chase said, “I was sad when we did the last park because it was so much fun and I didn’t want it to end. I learned how to hold a crab so he doesn’t pinch me and I got to kayak for the first time.” Jennifer enjoyed herself as much as her sons did. “This turned out to be so much better than I ever could have imagined. We played and explored all summer long, while learning about the different areas in Monmouth County. We learned about our local nature and history by going out and seeing it. I try to get my boys outside as much as possible, so we often go to our closest parks like Thompson, Holmdel and Tatum, but this park tour got us to go see the parks that we didn’t even know about and may not have visited. Monmouth County Parks System offers different activities and sites, so no matter what you are looking for (hiking, boating, walking, swimming, bird watching, etc) there’s a park for that, all within a short drive.” One of the highlights of the trip for Jennifer was a chance meeting with Freeholder Lillian Burry and members of the Monmouth Board of Recreation while visiting the Mt Mitchill 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at the last stop of their park tour. “Besides giving us an opportunity to thank our county representatives for taking care of our parks, it was a great way to introduce my boys to the concept that these parks are not here by happenstance. We have these parks because of people that care, people who have made it their mission to preserve the county’s open spaces and landscape. The more I think about it, that’s really the most important lesson our boys can take away from this. Maybe they don’t fully understand that yet, but I know a seed was planted and they had a lot of fun in the process.” Hudson and Chase will be sharing their parks trip with their teachers and fellow students. “We tracked our progress on Facebook and had such a great response from friends, family and our community. Wherever we went whether at the store or work or church, our friends would talk to us about our park tour. Everyone was following along and encouraging us to finish.”

Park 14 of 30: While walking the grounds of Historic Walnford, we met Al. He opened up the home (built 1773), gave us a private tour and taught the boys about life back in the day. Thank you Al!

Park 27 of 30: Thompson Park... I can’t say it’s my favorite because I love them all for different reasons but it’s definitely the one we visit the most. So much to do here... dog park, trails and tennis for us today.

Park 29 of 30: Metedeconk River. Monmouth County Park system preserves 423 acres along the river to protect the water quality and wildlife habitat. Gorgeous day on the water hanging with swans, egrets, osprey and turtles. If you want to kayak or stand-up paddleboarding go see Mike at Midstream Rentals.

Park 7 of 30: Hartshorne Woods. The batteries and bunkers that were built during WWII and used again during the Cold War still stand. Good park for hiking, biking and fishing. Perfect day for exploring along the Navesink! www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com OCTOBER 2016

EXCELLENCE, ENVIRONMENT ENRICHING EXPERIENCE

Science Grows PREPARATION FOR at Oak Hill Academy OL & BEYOND Children are not the only thing that have sprouted at Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft. The school’s hands-on approach to science allows students to learn by doing. This is the focus of the Lower School science curriculum being taught to grades PreK through 4 by former research scientist and elementary teacher, Mrs. Sue Cahalane. She creates her own curriculum and bases it on the Next Generation Science Standards. Lessons often integrate areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Beyond the laboratories, students make use of Oak Hill’s greenhouse and garden for their experiments. To begin the school year, OHA second graders planted “short n sweet” carrots in the outdoor garden which have a fast maturation time of approximately 57 days. If all goes well with their experiment,

44

then the students will be able to harvest their crop in November with the hopes of donating their carrots to a local food bank in Holmdel. Oak Hill’s greenhouse allows for more plant experiments at various times of the year. Back in the science labs, students as young as four are actively engaged in experiments that involve such concepts as engineering, robotics, genetics, chemistry, magnetism, and animal life. They are using various laboratory equipment, as well as a 3D printer, Lego robotics, and a green screen. Even the walk to the Science Center is a lesson in itself. On their journey over the school “boardwalk trail” to the building, students discover various plants, animals, and insects. Oak Hill students have learned that science is all around them and they are ready to see their minds blossom!

Botox 101 Everyone is offering Botox(R)! Who should I trust?

Bell Works?

The excitement is buzzing over Bell Works with the signing of iCIMS, a leading provider of human resources software who will be occupying at least 340,000 square feet of the building. Much progress has been made at Bell Works.

Do your research. Ask your friends. Read reviews. Look for someone with proven experience who can qualify you as a good candidate for the procedure and determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. We recommend seeing a board-certified physician.

What does Botox do? Cosmetically, it is an FDA approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of wrinkles in between the eyebrows and around the eyes.

How much does it cost? HOLMDEL MAYOR ERIC HINDS recently hosted over 50 members of the Holmdel Half Century Club, along with a few other tours. He will be conducting more tours this month. If you are a Holmdel resident and would like to arrange a group tour, please contact Deb Brew at 114htwp@gmail.com.

As little as $200. Typically, Botox is charged by the unit. The number of units you need will determine the total cost for the area you wish to treat.

How long does the procedure take? It’s a quick 10-minute procedure. No anesthesia is required. Pain is minimal. You may feel a pinch.

What are the usual side effects? Minimal redness, swelling and pain at the site of injection. Mild bruising or bleeding.

When will I see results? It will take about 24-48 hours to begin to notice results. Full affect is at two weeks.

How long does it last? Effects will last three to four months.

Can Botox be combined with other treatments for a more complete rejuvenation? Absolutely! Botox can be combined with fillers or skin treatments for a more complete affect. “Great spa! It’s the only spa in the area I will go to. I have had a massage, facial, Botox and lip injections here. The doctors are the best! They are very honest and modest about what you need done. I have been to two other doctors for Botox and they wanted to push me into getting more done than I needed. These doctors do not do that and I really appreciate it. The spa is extremely clean and well kept. These doctors are the only ones I trust with my face.”

FRANCIS FOUNDATION TO HOLD

12TH ANNUAL GALA

NOV 4

Lez Zeppelin

The 12th Annual Gala – “Glitter in Gold” – will be hosted by the Francis Foundation (FF) as they honor all of the FF warriors, angels and their families. The gala, named after the official color of pediatric cancer awareness month, will be held on October 22, 2016 at the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch. Francis Foundation founder Bob Huegle said, “Because of everyone’s continuing generosity, since last October’s Hawaiian Luau Gala, The Frances Foundation has compassionately gifted more than $235,000 to children fighting cancer and their families. These gifts have brought priceless smiles to critically ill children and desperately needed relief to financially devastated families. During the last year, the FF sent pediatric cancer warriors and their families to Florida, sent our warriors to sporting events and plays, purchased a puppy for a warrior, hosted a fun day event at IPlay America, held a hospital holiday party, a summer picnic, an ice cream party, and made countless financial donations including payments of rent bills, utility bills, medical treatment travel expenses, and uninsured medical bills. This is our mission which is only made possible because of our supporters.” For more information about the Gala or the Francis Foundation, visit www.francesfoundation.net, “Like” FF on Facebook or call 732.219.7711.

FL stars Boomer Esiason, Phil Simms and Bart Scott celebrated at Garmany with several hundred guests for an exciting game-changing inaugural fundraising event, “Garmany-Boom!”, celebrating life, fashion and raising awareness for Cystic Fibrosis through the Boomer Esiason Foundation on September 9, 2016. Artist, comedian, performer and New Jersey native Joe Piscopo was the Master of Ceremonies who also sang a few songs. $122,000.00 was raised during the evening, “An overwhelming success!”, cheers Boomer Esiason. “The Garmany team exceeded any and all expectations. You’d never know that this was the first event of its kind in their Red Bank store. It’s no wonder that they’ve had such success as a company. The guests were as gracious and supportive as could be. I can’t say enough, I thoroughy enjoyed the event and am truly grateful to all those that helped us raise significant funds for the cystic fibrosis community.” Guests were treated to a catered cocktail gathering by celebrity chef Diane Henderiks, roaming bar areas featuring themed drinks sponsored by DIAGEO, a live auction, and shopping opportunities for men and women with a percentage of sales benefitting the foundation. As an added bonus, Boomer is also being outfitted and styled by Garmany for the 20162017 NFL season as he hosts another successful year at Inside the NFL on Showtime, which is an incredible opportunity to bring national attention to the store. This is just the beginning of a meaningful and exciting collaboration between Boomer and Garmany. Johnell Garmany, owner of Garmany says, “September 9th was a groundbreaking gathering for a privately owned Red Bank establishment to host such star power. We’re proud to bring this event to our area and we can’t wait to plan for next year.”

J. VINCENT JEWELERS HELPS CUSTOMERS SEE THE LIGHT State-of-the Art Technology Shows Customers a Diamond’s Light Performance J. Vincent Jewelers in Colts Neck recently engaged in a special training on an instrument that helps customers see and understand light performance in a diamond. As a member of the prestigious American Gem Society - an elite group of retailers who meet and maintain the highest standards in the jewelry industry - J. Vincent has exclusive access to this state-of-the-art technology. A look inside a diamond, showing its light performance with color.

The ASET machine with tools and a set diamond ring. Customers can come in with their jewelry and view their diamonds light performance.

When it comes to the 4 C’s of a diamond—carat weight, color, clarity and cut - it is CUT that has the greatest impact on the beauty of a diamond. With the Presentation ASET (Angular Spectrum Evaluation Tool), customers can now see in real time how well a diamond is performing with light based on a color distribution seen through the instrument. “Here at J. Vincent, we have long understood the importance of cut to the beauty and sparkle of a diamond,” explains owner Joe Brando, “and now we can bring customers into our world through a compelling but nontechnical presentation.” Adds Brando, “We actually use the Presentation ASET to purchase diamonds as well, and ensuring that each gem we offer is exhibiting top light performance.”

The program, which builds bridges between people and communities, serves low-income people in the communities of Freehold, Red Bank, and Keyport. Bridges Director Kathy Logan said that the following items are needed by October 21, 2016. “New winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves for infants up to size 16.” Contact Kathy via email at lathy0731@aol.com to schedule a pick-up time for new items being donated. She noted that if you have lightly used winter items for donation, they may be dropped off in the shed behind the Holmdel Community Church, 40 Main Street, Holmdel. There will also be a collection for the holidays. “New toys and books for infants up to teens are needed by December 10, 2016. Suggested gifts for teens are gift cards to Target, Old Navy, and

So many helped, not only with the donations but also in packing the supplies,” she said. “We are an all-volunteer organization. We do not receive any grants or corporate help. Every penny of the donations given goes directly into the program. All the help we receive is greatly appreciated,” Kathy said. If anyone wishes to make a monetary donation, please make your check out to “HCC-Bridges” and send it to Kathy Logan, 8 Stagecoach Drive, Holmdel New Jersey 07733.

BUILDING CHARACTER EDUCATION INTO CURRICULUM RANNEY MIDDLE SCHOOL DEVELOPS INNOVATIVE G.R.I.T. PROGRAM AIMED AT PROBLEM SOLVING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION This fall, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders at Ranney School in Tinton Falls will be studying more than algebra, world history, and literature—they will be learning about values and conflict resolution. A new Middle School program called G.R.I.T. is bringing character education to the classroom. Standing for Guided expectations, Respectful communication, Identifying solutions, and Transferring solutions to the community, the G.R.I.T. approach will engage students, advisors, and faculty members in setting appropriate community standards for respectful communication and constructive problem solving while teaching students skills they will need for high school and beyond. “All Middle Schools are searching for ways to effectively have conversations around character development and leadership,” says Ranney Middle School Division Head Matt Hall. “The challenge is that no single program can work across all schools, so to best create one for the Ranney community, we decided to design one from scratch.” By integrating character education into the curriculum, G.R.I.T. aims to enrich student-teacher relationships—a hallmark of independent schools like Ranney—and classroom management. Each month, Middle School advisory groups will focus on a theme, such as communication, friendship, tolerance, accountability, trust, or respect. Using facultydirected questions, students will discuss the themes in small groups during their 25-minute daily advisory periods before diving deeper into the themes through role play and case studies. The program is meant to be non-judgmental and nondisciplinary. At the end of each month, advisory groups will have the opportunity to share what they learned—as well as any proposed strategies or solutions they developed—with the entire Middle School community at its Town Hall gatherings. The second, or follow-through, component of the program involves how students then act within the community with their peers and teachers.

A Great Place to Pick Your Own... Peaches • Nectarines (August into September)

“Our faculty is very excited about implementing character education this fall. Not only will teachers have a universal language for interacting with students on common topics that affect this unique age group, but our students will have an opportunity to add to the conversation and to take more ownership of their classroom experience. Our goal is that they will gain a sense of personal leadership while also learning to effectively communicate and collaborate in small groups as well as larger communities.”

ANIMAL ADVOCACY IMPROVING FOOD SAFETY & CONFINEMENT OF FARM ANIMALS PROVIDED BY K ATHLEEN SCHATZMANN NJ STATE COUNCIL DIRECTOR | THE HUMANE SOCIET Y OF THE UNITED STATES

If you had the opportunity to end the intensive confinement of farm animals in your state and improve food safety, wouldn’t you do it? That is what will be asked of Massachusetts voters in November on Question 3 – the statewide ballot measure that bans extreme cage confinement of veal calves, breeding sows, and laying hens, and also stipulates that selling certain products from immobilizing cages and crates won’t be allowed in the state, no matter where they originate. Who really can defend confinement so extreme that animals can barely move? The measure would simply ensure that certain farm animals are able to stand up, lie down, turn around and extend their limbs. The measure, in practical terms, means that certain animals – specifically veal calves, breeding pigs and egg-laying hens – will not spend their lives in cages barely larger than their bodies. This measure has won support from food safety advocates, because intensively confined animals often suffer from weakened immune systems, which allow dangerous bacteria to proliferate. For example, numerous studies show that egg operations confining hens in small battery cages have higher rates of Salmonella, the leading cause of food poisoning-related death in the United States.

And with 200 major food retailers pledging to cleanse cage confinement from their supply chains – from McDonald’s to Walmart to Dunkin’ Donuts to other low-cost food sellers – who can reasonably argue that welfare improvements like this are not practical? What’s more, it’s happening throughout the world, even in countries where people spend a larger share of their money on food. Our Humane Society International team announced with CMR, one of the leading restaurant operators in Mexico, that the company will switch to exclusively cage-free eggs in its entire supply chain by 2022. Forward-thinking companies like CMR take animal welfare seriously. We’re proud of the work we’re doing with food companies abroad, and the cascade of cage-free egg announcements we have helped generate in recent weeks and months. Last month, Compass Group, the largest food service company in the world, pledged to go cage-free in the 50 countries in which it operates. Sodexo, the second largest food service company, also did the same. There are naysayers out there, people who swim against even the strongest tides of decency and progress, but these voices cannot prevail in a world where we are now starting to honor basic standards of care for animals. Every day, major companies are voting in the United States and other parts of North America and throughout the world for more responsible treatment of animals in agriculture. If Massachusetts voters stand with animals and with nearly the whole of the food retail sector, they will become the fourth state to pass a ballot measure to ban cage confinement of farm animals. Voters overwhelmingly favor the reform we’re seeking and it would make one thing very clear: there’s simply no future in caging animals. That era is officially ending. New Jersey residents: You can help ensure this historic measure passes on November 8th! Please sign up to make calls to Massachusetts voters through the campaign’s easy, automated phone system at www.YesOn3.com/calls.

NEW JERSEY TECHNOLOGY FIRM LAUNCHES DIGITAL BUSINESS CARD Merandex Technology Solutions, LLC announces the launch of its new Digital Business Card, a product that uses mobile technology to take the traditional business card to a new level. The Merandex Digital Business Card can be fully customized by the card owner with images, logos and other branding, along with popular contact methods, such as phone numbers, email addresses and social media handles. It can also include live links to websites, videos, audio and other online content. With the tap of a button the Digital Business Card is easily sent by each Digital Card owner or by anyone they’ve shared their card with. The Digital Card is sent via SMS text message to a person’s mobile number. Recipients save it to their mobile device where it appears as a logo alongside other app icons. The patent pending refer technology is what sets the Merandex Digital Business Card apart from other digital card apps. Anyone can share any Digital Business Card that is stored on their mobile phone. Plus, card owners are notified when someone refers them and can immediately contact or follow up with each new person who receives their Digital Card. “Business professionals network for three reasons: to remind people about their business, to share information about what

they do, and to get referred to potential clients,” said Merandex founder David Sokoler. “The Merandex Digital Business card does all of that and more. A physical card can be in only one hand at a time. The Merandex Digital Business Card can be shared over and over by anyone who has it. Because of the refer technology, you can follow up with new contacts almost immediately.” The Merandex Digital Business Card is priced at $99.00 per card for a one-year subscription, which includes self-service access to all features. FRIENDS OF J J COLLECTING HALLOWEEN COSTUMES FOR CHILDREN AFFECTED BY PEDIATRIC DISEASES Friends of JJ, a Monmouth County-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of children and families affected by pediatric diseases, will be hosting two Halloween Parties for pediatric patients on October 25, 2016 at The Unterberg Children’s Hospital of Monmouth Medical Center and on October 27, 2016 at St. Peters University Hospital. The nonprofit is asking for donations of new Halloween costumes (newborn to 21-years-old) and/or accessories (with tags) and gift cards by October 16, 2016. The parties will be over-the-top with Disney Characters, sing-alongs, goodie bag stations and best of all, we will be giving out full costumes and toys to the pediatric patients and their families. The patients will be encouraged to come out of their hospital rooms to enjoy the parties. For more information about donating, email brenna. friendsofjj@gmail.com. If you would like to send gift cards, they can be mailed to Friends of JJ, PO Box 163, Lincroft, NJ 07738. Friends of JJ started in 2014 for Lincroft resident Jerry “JJ” Messana, who was diagnosed in 2006 at the age of 20 with neuroblastoma. At the time, he was a Monmouth University political science student, graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and Sigma Pi Fraternity Brother. He graduated, traveled, started his own booking agency – all while being treated for his disease for eight years. He met his wife Amanda while attending Monmouth

University, and they were married in 2012. Unfortunately, JJ lost his battle on January 27, 2014 at the age of 27. Through his battle he never gave up or asked why. He lived his life the best he could. Friends of JJ has donated over $35,000 to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the pediatric team that treated JJ, $5,000 to pediatric hospice, $10,000 to families for medical bills, supplied multiple character visits to hospitals, and best of all over 20,000 gifts to children in local pediatric hospitals. The Messana Family believes, “the best way to keep Jerry present in our lives is to help these children and families that are going through what we experienced for eight years. No matter what type of serious illness these children are fighting - a new toy, a visit from a Ninja Turtle or Disney Princess or even just a goodie bag always puts a smile on a child’s face. Even if for a short time, that smile is what counts to us.” Friends of JJ can be found on Facebook – Friends of JJ Inc and on Instagram – Friends of JJ.

HALLOWEEN CANDY BUY BACK IN LINCROFT TO BENEFIT ACTIVE DUTY HEROES OVERSEAS Newman Springs Dental Care is redefining the phrase “put your $$ where your mouth is”. This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to the Lincroft dental office and receive $1 per pound. Drs. Mitchel Friedman, Julia Cintron and Aparna Menon are leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars and glowing timer toothbrushes in exchange for cavity-provoking candy. This Lincroft family dental practice has sponsored this event since 2009 with Comcast Spotlight. They will also donate a tooth brush for every pound of candy collected. “On Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., give up the candy to make a difference; that’s what we’re saying. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, however doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost,” says Dr. Friedman from Newman Springs Dental Care. “Kids can still have all of the fun of trickor-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well. Plus, these FireFly glowing brushes we’re giving out are really cool - they light up for two minutes, the ideal time for brushing”, added Dr. Cintron. There will be snacks and the kids are encouraged to dress up. As a special bonus, there will be a drawing for several special prizes. Global sugar consumption for children increases by about 2% every year and is currently 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids’ teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children’s teeth, can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces. Candy will be collected at Newman Springs Dental Care, located at 539 Newman Springs Road Lincroft. The candy must be unopened. No bites PLEASE! It will then be shipped to our troops overseas thanks to Army Recreational Military Services (ARMS). ARMS’s goal for this year is to provide a care package for every tri-state area service member. Visit www.supportarms.org for more information on how to help ARMS achieve this goal or make a cash donation. For more information, call 732,978.4523, or visit www.NewmanSpringsDentalCare.com.

SAINT LEO THE GREAT SCHOOL STUDENTS WELCOMED BACK WITH OPEN ARMS All students were welcomed back with open arms by the administration and staff at Saint Leo the Great School on September 6, 2016 by Principal Cornelius Begley, Vice Principal Deirdre Senkewicz, Reverend John Folchetti, and newly appointed Dean of Middle School, Mr. G. The students were excited to start another exciting school year.

Eighth grader Daniel Hurley escorts Chase Deservo (1st grade) and Emily Rae Johnson (3rd grade) into the first day of school at Saint Leo the Great.

HOLMDEL NATIVE DISCOVERS MASSIVE HOLES ‘PUNCHED’ NEAR MILKY WAY

Researchers have detected two massive holes which have been ‘punched’ through a stream of stars just outside the Milky Way, and found that they were likely caused by clumps of dark matter, the invisible substance which holds galaxies together and makes up a quarter of all matter and energy in the universe. The scientists, Holmdel native Dr. Denis Erkal and Dr Vasily Belokurov, from the University of Cambridge, found the holes by studying the distribution of stars in the Milky Way. While the clumps of dark matter that likely made the holes are gigantic in comparison to our Solar System – with a mass between one million and 100 million times that of the Sun – they are actually the tiniest clumps of dark matter detected to date. The results, which have been submitted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, could help researchers understand the properties of dark matter, by inferring what type of particle this mysterious substance could be made of. According to their calculations and simulations, dark matter is likely made up of particles more massive and more sluggish than previously thought, although such a particle has yet to be discovered. “While we do not yet understand what dark matter is formed of, we know that it is everywhere,” said Dr. Denis Erkal from Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy, the paper’s lead author. “It permeates the universe and acts as scaffolding around which astrophysical objects made of ordinary matter – such as galaxies – are assembled.” Current theory on how the universe was formed predicts that many of these dark matter building blocks have been left unused,

and there are possibly tens of thousands of small clumps of dark matter swarming in and around the Milky Way. These small clumps, known as dark matter sub-haloes, are completely dark, and don’t contain any stars, gas or dust. Dark matter cannot be directly measured, and so its Holmdel native Dr. Denis Erkal of the University of existence is usually inferred Cambridge, discovered massive holes ‘punched’ through a stream of stars just outside the Milky Way, by the gravitational pull it likely caused by dark matter. exerts on other objects, such as by observing the movement of stars in a galaxy. But since subhaloes don’t contain any ordinary matter, researchers need to develop alternative techniques in order to observe them. The researchers used data from the stellar streams in the Palomar 5 globular cluster to look for evidence of a sub-halo flyby. Using a new modelling technique, they were able to observe the stream with greater precision than ever before. What they found was a pair of wrinkled tidal tails, with two gaps of different widths. By running thousands of computer simulations, the researchers determined that the gaps were consistent with a fly-by of a dark matter sub-halo. If confirmed, these would be the smallest dark matter clumps detected to date.
