A Note From the Editor Recently, I was honored to be chosen by the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore as one of its Phenomenal Women Under 40 for 2017. I feel incredibly humbled to be among the ten women from Ocean and Monmouth counties who were picked for this award. All these ladies are true role models for the younger generation, and I can’t wait to see what they will achieve in their bright futures. The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore organization is a class act, and the members went above and beyond to make us feel worthy of this special honor. The “Phenoms”, which is what they called us, were showcased at a reception at Park Pavilion in Seaside Park. Below, here I am with my mother, Dee Burtnick (left), and my dear friend, Carol Stillwell (right).

"RICHES ARE MADE IN NICHES" This quote above is becoming truer every day in America. In today’s INFORMATION RICH, connected world, in every industry and walk of philanthropy and life, from charities to music to physicians to finances, consumers are seeking specialists and experts at things. I am sure that you find yourself doing it, especially if it pertains to something important like your health, wealth, home, kids, etc. I suppose it’s always been true, but especially nowadays - every person is his/her own BRAND. Take the extreme example of celebrities and athletes. They are their brand, their name and reputation helps “market” people to get them to go see the movie, the concert or sporting event. Everyone is a celebrity, everyone has a brand, reputation and persona that gets outwardly broadcast to the circle – be that your family, your community or your world. When I was a management consultant at a prestigious firm, we managed the concept of “minimizing extinction” – both personal and business. Basically, what can we do better to improve a balance sheet, profitability, net worth or quality of life. In today’s world it’s a shifting paradigm for our youth, as not “marketing” oneself can affect “social extinction” or at some level, separation. Some say that being online, having “a page”, to “tweet”, is almost mandatory. Sixty years ago, when my grandfather was alive, if he had a problem like a broken bone or an earache, guess what? He only had one choice! He lived in a small town in Italy and he only had one place he could go. It was the little local town doctor who did everything. If it was something major, like some crazy pain or growth, they might ship him to the closest largest town that had a “specialist”. Back then, no one really specialized. The same thing with money - back in the “good old days“, you had your bank, and from there you got all your money services. And if you lived in a happening place, maybe you had a local insurance agent. But for the most part, it was just one person who did everything for you from insurance, planning, a will, and investing. But today, these financial people are everywhere (trust me I’m one of them)! These are examples of how we have morphed into a SERVICE economy; we as a country PRODUCE very little in terms of goods (possibly due to a waning work ethic or the cost of labor, but that’s a different article). Today, if you have a problem, you go to specialist. If you have a cancer, you’re not going to go to your family doctor. You’re going to go
12
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
to an oncologist. You’ll more likely go to a super subspecialist, an oncologist that specializes in X. And take a wild guess who gets paid the most? The more specialized and the more precise the niche as a physician, the more money you are going to make, and ironically, the smarter you will work and be. You might have to study a little bit more to get there and bust your butt to be an expert, but over time that is the best place to be. To reiterate as this is very important – The more expert you are and the smaller the niche you have, the more money you can potentially make – if you WORK at it. Whether you’re retired or working; own the business or work for “the company” - this is all about defining your SUP (Special Unique Proposition). This is crucial building block in defining your niche and most importantly clarifies who you can help (as a person or a business) and recognize those you CAN’T (hint: DON’T TRY TO HELP EVERYBODY!) Regardless of what your niche is, you really need to spend some time contemplating your SUP. Sure there is a subset that will say “I REALLY don’t care what other people think”, I get it. But really? Pretend for a minute you had to design a personal website for YOU or your family. What would the tone and the message be? This is your SUP. Be proud of it. The really interesting thing is - once you even somewhat define it, you will see people start magnetically attracting to you - study them, know how to help them and add value to them to create your own fulfillment. So give it some introspection, and go out there and create your niche because “riches (not just money) are made in the niches.”

QUOTE OF THE MONTH “If you don’t have a niche and you’re not an expert at something, then you’re basically nothing to everyone.” Throughout history, “The Table” symbolically represents a center of ideas, spirituality, discussion and education. Volleyball Tournament Raises Funds for At-Risk Youth
B
ig Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties (BBBSMMC) held its 11th Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament on September 17, 2017 in Manasquan. The event was presented by Starbucks, Surf Taco, and Gee Gee’s Pizzeria. “Our Volleyball Tournament has grown each year and we are grateful for the support of the community that helps us raise funds for our 1-to-1 mentoring programs. The event was a fun day on the beach and the result is more Big Brothers and Big Sisters being matched with children in our community,” said William A. Salcedo, Executive Director of BBBSMMC. The fundraiser’s goal was to raise money to continue to enhance the quality and expand the programs that BBBSMMC provides. Its mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Currently there are over 700 children ages 6-18 building relationships with their Bigs that will help them develop personally, socially and academically. The program is solely run on the support from the community through individual gifts, grants and special events. Eagle Project Beautifies the Community Garden
Story Cathy Padilla
As part of his Eagle Scout project for Boy Scouts of America, Colts Neck resident Caleb Sass has given his time and energy to spruce up the Community Garden at the Colts Neck Library. Originally started in 2001, the garden went through a rebirth in 2013 and then again in May of 2016 when it transformed from a ‘children’s garden’ to the Community Garden. Caleb contacted Janeen Yodakis at the Colts Neck Library to see if there were any projects that would be appropriate for his Eagle Scout requirements to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of the community. “I was reluctant to do the project,” Caleb admits. “But after speaking with Mrs. Yodakis and seeing how much this project would help the town, I was eager to start.” Caleb is interested in pursuing a career in either architecture or engineering and applied his aptitude for design in the garden. Not having a background in gardening posed a challenge the Colts Neck High School junior was excited to conquer. “I think it’s a good thing I have no background in gardening. The garden made me learn about, and organize, a project around a subject of which I had no prior knowledge. It was a really great learning experience. I learned about gardening, leadership, and organization,” Caleb shares. “After learning what materials I had available I tried to fill in the shapes that were already in the garden in a way I thought would be practical, possible, and look good.” When asked what the project required, Caleb is quick to sing the praises of those who helped him. “A lot of people helped me along the way, but planning and executing the project was my responsibility,” Caleb says. “I had to design the garden, make arrangements for supplies, plan work days, organize volunteers, and communicate with the library and local government. But I got to work with a bunch of great people who helped me a lot.”
18
A guitar player and skateboard enthusiast, Caleb will soon join the elite level of Eagle Scout. He has completed all necessary requirements, including his Eagle Project, and now awaits final confirmation. “I really value Scouting and think it’s something that everyone who has an opportunity to join should do,” Caleb says. “When I first started I wanted to be an Eagle Scout for the obvious reasons, mostly how good it looks on a resume or job application. But as I continued, and became more involved, I realized the importance of what I was learning. I learned life skills way beyond camping and fire starting and have made nearly all of my best friends through Scouting. Now, to me, the Eagle scout rank is proving I will continue using the skills and the morals I learned for the rest of my life.” Colts Neck Library is located at 1 Winthrop Drive in Colts Neck and can be reached at 732.431.5656. $2.5 Million Raised for CentraState’s Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis Center The rain from Hurricane Irma couldn’t stop the annual fundraiser, An Evening in the Vineyards, held on September 15, 2017 at CentraState’s Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus in Freehold. Nearly 500 guests attended this annual event which benefited the Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis Center. The evening opened with a National Anthem performance from “The 9/11 Singing Policeman and the Voice that Healed a Nation” tenor Opera singer, Daniel Rodriquez; a welcome from Rennie Rankin, one of the Wellness Program patients at the MS Center and a surprise honoree presentation to the hostess of the Gordon Stillwell Tasting Room and a Leading Lady in Monmouth County, Carol Stillwell. The merriment included seventy-nine wine samplings plus craft beers and spirits from a host of local distributors arranged by Max’s Beer Wine & Liquor. The exquisite fare accompanying the samplings was provided by local restauranteur Rob Kash and his staff at Metrolpolitan Café/On Location Catering Services, Great Restaurants, Inc. A gift auction, wine toss and serenading music provided entertainment for guests at this spectacular event. Sponsors of the event included Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Qualcare, VNA HealthGroup, CentraState’s Medical & Dental Staff, Biogen, BriovaRx, Freehold Radiology – A Princeton Radiology Practice, Laurita Winery, Liberty Pain Center, The Spano Family Charitable Foundation, Inc., and CentraState’s newest community partner Ashley Home Store of Central New Jersey and Staten Island. The event has raised $2.5 million for The Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis Center over the past sixteen years. The MS Center is the largest center of its kind in the metropolitan area and now sees over 2,000 patients annually and performs over 150 infusions monthly. The MS Center offers diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, patient and family support, a 12-week MS Wellness Program and a Graduate Wellness program for those living with Multiple Sclerosis.

Mark is a very patient, honest, knowledgable and friendly person. He goes out of his way to accommodate our needs and is always available to answer all of our questions or concerns. Being this is our first time as home buyers we are very thankful to have Mark by our side guiding us through what could of become a very stressful time. It really is a pleasure and blessing to have him as our agent and I would highly recommend him to all. Mark really is a great asset to his company.” R.K. – Monmouth County “Mark was one of two realtors we interviewed but opted for other realtor because of experience in our development. Although other units were selling, ours did not sell in more than six months. We then called Mark... Our townhouse was sold and closed within two months... Mark successfully negotiated close date other than desired by buyer based on our travel and family commitments. He facilitated all the necessary steps along the way and we trusted and enjoyed working with him. “ G.K. – Middlesex County

must inevitably keep pace. And so, as could be anticipated, on June 28, 2017, a Family Court judge was called to decide a dispute between exspouses over their sixteen year old child’s first name. The daughter that was born to them was transgender and wanted to legally change his name from Veronica, his birth name, to Trevor, the name he had been using for five years. Oak Hill Academy Uses Movie to Teach Children and PREPARATION FOR About Digital Age Dangers Parents OL & BEYOND Ask any parent of a tween or teenager and they will respond that they are concerned about their child’s dependence on technology. Their devices are with them at all times and it is affecting them physically, emotionally, and socially. It is with this in mind that Oak Hill Academy, an independent elementary school in Lincroft, decided to present “SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age, a documentary about the biggest parenting issue of our time.”
SCREENAGERS asks, “Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span?” Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how it might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance. 24

SCREENAGERS addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on—depicting teen struggles over social media, video games, and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to best navigate the digital world and provides practical resources to help them do it. It has been featured on Good Morning America, The Dr. Oz Show, The New York Times, and PBS Newshour. Oak Hill Academy realized how important this issue had become. Therefore, the school had two free showings: one for the students during the day on September 28, 2017 and one for its parents on that same day. Presentations were given in the school’s Scire Student Activities Center. Oak Hill Academy Headmaster Joseph Pacelli commented, “Our school’s responsibility to our students goes beyond teaching them how to read and write. We also need to equip them with the coping skills to grow up in an age when their attention is being demanded from many sources. Our presentation of SCREENAGERS is one means for us to cultivate smart, happy, and healthy children.”

Alexander Dunlop A Life Coach Who is a True Magician, reaches Amazon Best Seller List with his book, Play Your Cards Right: A Sacred Guide To Life On Earth
Alexander Dunlop reaches #1 in Amazon’s Hot New Releases Category with his book, Play Your Cards Right: A Sacred Guide To Life On Earth. Alexander is a Harvard graduate and former Wall Street consultant who went on a personal quest to find the meaning of his life. After attending Jesuit seminary, becoming a Swami in India, and apprenticing to Indigenous Shamans, he found the purpose of his life, much to his surprise, in an ordinary deck of 52 playing cards. “The deck of playing cards is actually a timeless book of knowledge that was hidden in plain sight,” says Alexander Dunlop. “It reveals the mathematical structure of the quantum field in which we live. And, it’s at least 7,000 years old.” “According to this timeless knowledge, based on our date of birth, each person has 13 cards to play for life. These cards form our Sacred Blueprint. And once we know this,” Alexander continues, “then we have the awareness to make clear, confident decisions in life. It offers us a direct pathway to more fulfilling work, happier relationships, and authentic self-expression.” Here’s what Peter Roth, Director of the Heart River Center, has to say, “In his soul-affirming book, Alexander beautifully describes our unique journeys… He has brought these cards to life, revealing their extraordinary truth.” And this is what some of Alexander’s clients had to say about the book. Kelly A. Connor, founder of LumiNation Magazine, writes, “In Play Your Cards Right, Alexander shares game-changing wisdom for mastering Cupid’s game.” “This book is a must-read for business leaders…” says Marty Katz, managing partner of the Stratist Group.

Lincroft School & Molzon's Annual Fall Festival BY SUSAN MURPHY
Lincroft School and Molzon's partnered once again to offer their fun-filled family fall festival on September 23, 2017 at Molzon Landscaping Nursery. It marked the 20th year for the annual event. About 300 people came to the four-hour event and enjoyed activities such as an inflatable obstacle course, pumpkin bowling, milk bottle bash, and ring toss. Crafts such as popcorn hands, sandy candy, and pumpkin painting along with a caricature artist, face painting, guess the pumpkin weight contest and candy corn guessing jar were also part of the event. Over 100 crafts were sold. New this year was a scarecrow decorating contest which was judged by Molzon's. Prizes were awarded to first, second and third place contest winners. After the festival, families were invited to display their scarecrows in front of Lincroft Elementary School where they will greet students as they enter the building. Some
food was donated by PTA members; hot foods were donated by Aleo’s and Luigi’s. Molzon’s offered a “Special of the Day,” featuring a fall decoration package that included a cornstalk, pumpkin, 9” mum, a bow and a hay bale. As in years past, Molzon generously donated 15% of the day’s proceeds to the Lincroft PTA. “We are happy to give back to Lincroft School. The PTA and Molzon have worked together for many years to make the Fall Festival a success,” said Paul Molzon. Co-chairs Heather McGrath and Holly Rohlf said the event was a tremendous success. “Holly and I would both like to thank Boy Scout Troop 110 for the continued support of our PTA events and the Lincroft families and student volunteers who donated their time to make our event a fun-filled day for all families,” said Heather.

Living Well ARE YOU WORKING IN THE DARK? Do you suffer from “karoshi” or death from overwork? If you live in Tokyo, the governor is doing something about it. Tokyo recently ordered municipal employees to finish work by 8:00 p.m. to reverse karoshi. Any worker found at his/her desk at 8:00 p.m. is sent home, as the lights are all turned off. Are you living in the dark toiling 24-7? Many of us are, either by design or deadline. Here are some simple tips to keep sunshine sourcing your long days:
Visit DonnaLynSpeaks.com to Learn More! Presentation Coaching , E xecutive Coaching , L eadership Workshops , Corporate S eminars , Conference Keynotes , B usines s Development
1. Mandatory massages. The days of treating yourself to overindulgent massages are long gone. For many of us, massages are life sustainers and longevity elixirs. If we’re going to fully participate in life mentally, physically and spiritually, massages are one healing and healthy way to recharge and rest our weary bones and bodies. One of my favorite treats is a Yoga Massage with A Kneaded Vacation in Red Bank. As a yoga enthusiast, this customized blend of muscle movement within the context of some challenging asanas (postures) has really allowed my practice to expand and my mind, body and spirit to flourish.
2. Meetings that Move. Literally, my colleagues and I are enjoying idea sessions and meetings while walking, talking and enjoying the great outdoors. Who says all meetings have to be long, boring and boarded up inside a corporate space? Some of our best initiatives have been created with the inspiration of mother earth supporting our trekking toes.
1 AGENT FOR THE LAST 12 YEARS
#
HOLMDEL-COLTS NECK SERVING OFFICE OVER $140 MILLION IN CLOSED BUSINESS
3. Cyber coffee connections. Some weeks are so pressing that traveling to have a really great cup of cappuccino is even out of the question. What we do instead is text to talk at a specific time with our respective drink choices at our office of the moment. We open our meetings in laughter over what we’re really drinking to keep the pace since we can’t see one another when we’re meeting virtually. The point is we’re still connecting but we’re prioritizing self-care by not burning out with too many triple booked travel-to engagements in one day. 4. Celebrating stillness. Who knew stopping to feel a fall breeze or watching the leaves drop to the ground could be so centering? Silly as it may sound, the science and the statistics reaffirm time and time again the power of pausing. Staying truly in the moment is the essence of enjoying life fully day by day. Know anyone that needs to put the brakes on a busy day? Start with one minute of stillness a day and try to enjoy watching the world go by. You just may consider slowing down. Companies and countries around the globe have been making marked changes to slow down the pace to prioritize talent wellness and full family functioning. If you lived in Germany, your manager would not be allowed to contact you during off hours, according to Germany’s employment ministry. Companies like Volkswagon and BMW follow this lead, while Daimler has automatically deleted emails sent to employees while on vacation since 2014. So, wherever you work or tirelessly toil, take the time to develop your own plan to kick “karoshi” to the curb to continue living well. Zumba Party in Pink Fundraiser To Benefit Breast Cancer Research
Holmdel resident Sandy Molon will once again host a Zumba Party in Pink on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Holmdel Recreation Center, located at 6 Crawfords Corner Road in Holmdel, in support of breast cancer research from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Last year, over 80 people from Middletown, Holmdel, Hazlet, Aberdeen, Jackson, Howell, Colts Neck, Keyport, Freehold, Old Bridge, Perth Amboy, Albany New York, and Pennsylvania attended – all ranging in ages. Sandy keeps sharing her story in the hopes that women will
take an active role in their care and regularly follow the self-check process. “I was first diagnosed in 2009. I was seven years cancer free when I found the lump myself for the second time. The chances of recurrence were less than 1% and even though I had a double mastectomy in my first diagnosis followed by hormonal therapy I still had a recurrence of the exact same cancer in the exact same place. This time around I had surgery again, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment – and I continued teaching my Zumba classes throughout this entire process. I refuse to let Cancer take my life and the things I enjoy away from me. I cannot stress how important it is for women to self-check on a regular basis. I found my cancer on both occasions.” For more information, email sandymolon@gmail.com. Tickets are $20 per person (survivors and warriors attend for free.) Tickets are also available at the door, but space is limited.

Unbroken Warriors Second Annual Touch a Truck Event BY SUSAN MURPHY
Unbroken Warriors held its second annual Touch a Truck event at Dearborn Market in Holmdel on September 23, 2017. Roughly 1800 people attended, filling the front, side and back lots just 45 minutes into the event! Last year about 1300 attended. There were 41 trucks available for the children to touch, sit on, and enjoy, including a John Deere tractor, Postal Service truck, an ambulance and a police car. The activities were free with paid admission. These included a scribble car (an actual car donated from a junkyard) that little ones could write and draw on; several activities with Yoga for Kids; a fun bus where kids played inside with the equipment; and a coloring table of truck pictures to color and keep. Pinot's Palette of Red Bank, allowed kids to paint an 8x8 canvas for $5 and donated all purchases back to Unbroken Warriors. PM Pediatrics had a child health information table. Dearborn had
free hayrides and handed out over 1,000 free ice cream samples. It also offered special coupons and give-aways for paid guests. “Unbroken Warriors is so fortunate to be surrounded by communities who care for our military veterans. Dearborn Market and their parent company have been more than gracious with offering their land and resources two years in a row. Without so many supportive businesses arriving with trucks and equipment, municipal departments, and county officials offering their time today, events like this wouldn’t be possible. We are all thrilled that we can help all of these companies and departments connect with our youngest New Jersey residents, while raising money and awareness for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex Post Traumatic Disorder,” shared Michael and Christine Dowens, founders of Unbroken Warriors, Holmdel.

Girl Scouts of Jersey Shore Award “Phenomenal Women Under 40” Honorees Ten outstanding young professionals have been honored as 2017 recipients of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore’s award for Phenomenal Women Under 40, sponsored by BlueClaws Charities. The award, better known as the Phenom Award, honors emerging, young, female leaders under the age of 40 from Monmouth and Ocean counties. It not only recognizes professional women for who they are, but also for the potential they might achieve in their futures. “When our Girl Scouts look to the community for role models, we want to show them young women professionals who are making a difference today,” said Susan H. McClure, chief executive officer, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. “Our Phenom Award recipients are fearless and daring leaders who set an example in everything they do. Their drive and determination make them excellent examples of women who aren’t afraid to try new things and who do whatever it takes to get the job done.” Girl Scouts offers girls a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage in leadership at the highest levels while addressing issues they feel passionately about. It is the only organization creating the female leadership pipeline for the next generation. Phenom Award recipients are examples of the gogetters, innovators, risk-takers, and leaders

We have recently witnessed the devastation of hurricanes in the South and the importance of providing updates to the community. In July, we provided a two-part training for our Senior community called S.T.O.R.M., Seniors Taking On Readiness Measures. This is a community preparedness program created, designed and delivered by the Monmouth County Sheriff’s office and Office of Emergency Management in an effort to strengthen community resiliency and sustainability and to expedite recovery during emergencies and disasters. I want to remind residents that if you have not already done so, I ask that you please log onto the Holmdel Township website and sign up to receive notifications. When you sign up you will receive important updates so you will be notified of all-important information regarding our community. Go to holmdeltownship-nj.com/list.aspx and click on the "notify me" link.
September saw the addition of national retailer Hobby Lobby to the Holmdel Town Center. The store officially opened in the former space once held by A&P. This hobby store, one of the largest in the state, has occupied all 42,000 square feet of the former supermarket. The ribbon cutting was a wonderful event, attended by store management as well as local officials. For those unfamiliar with this organization, Hobby Lobby is the largest privately owned arts-and-crafts retailer in the world with over 750 stores and 32,000 employees. The store has created over 50 new jobs in our community. September was also the month our community gathers to remember the victims and first responders from 9-11. This year at the 9-11 memorial in front of Town Hall we gathered to do just that with a ceremony of quiet ref lection and remembrance. Harvest Fest is returning to Holmdel on Saturday, October 7, 2017. Bring the entire family to Bayonet Farm from 12:00 to 9:00 p.m. for our annual Harvest Fest. This year’s festival features food vendors, craft vendors, live music, petting zoo, pony rides and wagon rides. The movie "It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" will be shown at 7:00 p.m. on the large screen, which will be followed by fireworks at 8:00 p.m.

Students G. Beitler, R. Gonzalez, C. DiMezza, S. Ciupinski, SJVHS Advancement Officer Mrs. Julie Pasquale, and SJVHS Employee Mr. Steve Giannios unload the items at Holmdel Fire & Rescue Company #2 facility.
Saint John Vianney High School (SJVHS) students, staff, and faculty participated in a Texas Hurricane Relief Drive along with the Holmdel Fire & Rescue Company #2 and the Holmdel OEM. The SJVHS community collected items, such as batteries, diapers, toiletries, cleaning supplies, buckets, work gloves, flashlights, first aid kits, laundry detergent, storage bins, blankets, and socks. These items were packed in an SJVHS school bus and brought to Holmdel Fire & Rescue Company #2, where they will be delivered to those in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey. SJVHS Advancement Officer, Mrs. Julie Pasquale, and SJVHS Principal Mr. Steven DiMezza organized this event, along with Holmdel Detective, Eric Hernando. Mrs. Pasquale states, “It’s not my nature to be a spectator, to stand by and watch. Stuff the Bus for Texas was a humbling experience for me. It directed me to refocus from the trivial, on to what matters. What matters is trying to provide comfort and relief to so many people in need.” Many students helped to transport the items that were collected. SJVHS junior Coleton DiMezza said, “Ever since I heard reports about Hurricane Harvey, I instantly thought about how Hurricane Sandy tremendously affected me in 2012. Sandy blew in and destroyed a big portion of certain parts of New Jersey, and I cannot imagine how Houston was going to prepare for a similar storm. There simply isn’t a way to prepare. This is why I felt the need to give back and possibly help the people of Houston. Even in small amounts, any donation to people in need can be helpful. I am glad the SJV community was able to contribute to this amazing cause”. “My heart swells thinking about the outpouring of support through the generous donations we received from our community. Everyone, in their own way, pitched in to aid those impacted by this disaster. I feel that it made deeper connections within our SJVHS Community as well as re-instilling gratitude in our hearts,” states Mrs. Pasquale. Coleton DiMezza shared, “My prayers go out to all the people affected by the storm.”

You’re not buying just one thing, you’re buying a piece of a heart, a piece of a soul…a small piece of someone else’s life.” - Unknown And with those words, you are invited to experience a local artist’s heart by attending the 18th Annual Colts Neck Friends of the Library Fine Art Show and Sale. Opening reception is Friday, October 13, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a Meet the Artists wine tasting featuring the local wines of 4JG’s Winery, and a suggested donation of $10.00 at the door. Gallery will be open in the lower level of the library for two consecutive weekends: Saturday, October 14th and Sunday, October 15th and October 21st and October 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. This is a cultural event highlighting the many talented artists who call Colts Neck home, with 20% of sales going to Friends of the Library Foundation to fund library programs and improvements. Decorate your home with art as original as yourself. Be sure to stop in and see the fall colors

The Kiwanis Club of Holmdel held its seventh annual Wine and Beer tasting on September 16, 2017 at the Dearborn Market Greenhouse. The wine and beer tasting, courtesy of Junction Liquors in Belford, was accompanied by a delicious barbecue and pig roast. Guests were entertained by the band ExpressWay, a 50/50 raffle rounded out the evening. Ted LaBarca, who co-chaired the event with Anu Khare noted that the 100 guests who attended included family and friends, Holmdel Kiwanis President Anthony Montagna, members of the Keyport Kiwanis and other local Kiwanis, friends from the Frances Foundation as well as Holmdel Mayor Gregory Buontempo, and Holmdel Police Captain Frank Allocco. “The band was great and everyone seemed to have a great time and enjoyed the event. We appreciate the support from everyone who attended. All of the Kiwanis members worked hard to make this a success,” said LaBarca. He explained that the Holmdel Kiwanis serves the Bayshore area of Monmouth and Ocean Counties and works with many non-profit organizations by holding fundraisers to support them or volunteering with them when needed. All of the proceeds go back to charities such as the Frances Foundation, Jason’s Dreams for Kids, the Rainbow Foundation, and many other local charities. Holmdel Kiwanis Club also has a Service Leadership Program that includes K-Kids from grammar schools, Builders Clubs from middle schools, Key Clubs from high schools, Circle K Clubs from colleges, as well as Aktion Clubs for adults living with disabilities. Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. For further information, visit www.holmdelkiwanis.org.

Expect to see these wonderful volunteers at the free day of dentistry in Lincroft on October 19th!
DENTISTRY FROM THE HEART, Newman Springs Dental Care’s gift of a free day of dentistry, will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2017. The dental volunteers will provide examinations, digital x-rays, blood pressure and Velscope (advanced oral cancer) screenings. A choice of an extraction, filling or cleaning will be provided to those 18 years and older who arrive at the Lincroft practice. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and is first come, first served. The first 120 adults are guaranteed to be seen. This year’s event will be the tenth annual Dentistry From The Heart event for Newman Springs Dental Care at 539 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. Last year, over $54,514 of free dental care was provided to 84 patients in a single day. Since 2007, that’s over $500,000 in care for more than 1300 grateful recipients in the greater Lincroft area. “One day may seem insignificant; however, we know it makes a difference in the lives of the people who come to us for help” said Dr. Mitchel Friedman. “Since bringing Dentistry From The Heart to New Jersey in 2007, we have helped other offices start their own events as well as volunteered to provide dental care with them. There is a large need and other generous dental teams have answered by serving their communities.” For additional Dentistry From The Heart events, visit DentistryFromTheHeart.org. Newman Springs Dental Care is located at 539 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. For more information about Dentistry From The Heart, call 732.978.4523 or visit NewmanSpringsDentalCare.com.

THE 12U COLTS NECK COUGARS recently returned from playing in the Cooperstown All-Star Village Baseball Tournament in Oneonta, New York. An accomplishment in itself to be a part of this tournament, the Cougars were one of 50 teams from 11 states, plus Canada, to play. The Cougars had 10 players hit a total of 22 homeruns in the eight games played (led by Andrew McDevitt with five, Tyler Mayerhoff and Ryan Johnson each with three), and even included nine in one game vs. Canada. The Cougars were the first team to represent Colts Neck in the tournament after several years, and only a few have been in it since 2000. Highlights of their trip included winning a playoff game, going to the Baseball Hall of Fame, meeting other players from around the country and from Canada, a team skills competition, team pin trading and visiting family fun centers in the area. The Cougars had 12 players attend - Chris Brown, Kris Bhatnagar, Nick Mavica, Ryan Johnson, Brandon Ladzinski, Eli Novario, Katie Finnegan, Andrew McDevitt, Chris Sasso, Christian Zito, Andrew Gonzales and Tyler Mayerhoff, including five coaches - CJ Brown, Scott Mavica, Mark Ladzinski, Joe Novario and Don Johnson.

The Retirement Challenge With the increase in life expectancy age, there is a very good chance that retirees will require income for longer than they anticipate, and many are unprepared for this. The median retirement savings for individuals ages 55-64 is just over $100,000, which translates to roughly $4,000 in annual spending (per the Government Accountability Office). The future of Social Security benefits is uncertain, and with fewer guaranteed pensions, the financial responsibility of saving for retirement has shifted to the individual. These issues have resulted in many employees being unable to retire on time.

Hominy Hill Farm & Golf Course Designated as Historic Landmark Subtle Changes Make the Woman
Left to right: Colts Neck Township Committeeman & Historical Preservation Liaison Frank Rizzuto; Colts Neck Mayor Russell Macnow; Monmouth County Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry; Chairman of the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee, Monmouth County Park System Chief, Acquisition & Design Department Gail Hunton; and Monmouth County Park System Director James Truncer
On September 26, 2017, Hominy Hill Farm & Golf Course was officially designated as a historic landmark with a bronze marker. Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry stated that the historic bronze marker is the continuation of a program that the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee initiated a number of years ago. The intent has been and continues to be the memorialization of historic sites and structures in the Township of Colts Neck. This particular marker is the thirteeth site. As the marker indicates, Hominy Hill Golf Course has an interesting history. Particularly meaningful today because the clubhouse, formerly the large dairy barn, will be completely renovated by the Monmouth County Parks System. Jim Truncer, Director of the Monmouth County Parks System, said, “The Monmouth County Park System is honored that Colts Neck Township has designated Hominy Hill Farm and Golf Course as a historic landmark, and we appreciate the township’s support for our county’s heritage.” The marker text reads: Hominy Hill Farm & Golf Course On this site in the 1940s, Henry Mercer bred prize-winning cattle; it was known as Hominy Hill Farm. Robert Trent Jones Sr., golf course architect, transformed the farm into a championship golf course. The large dairy barn became the club house. In 1976 purchased by Monmouth County.

There are two products available that reverse the signs of facial aging subtly so no one will know. If you’ve been thinking of “getting work done” but don’t want a drastic change to your look, these products may be right for you. Collagen is key to healthy looking skin. As we age, we produce less collagen. In addition, we lose about 1% of collagen a year after age 20. That’s when we start to see wrinkles and sunken areas. Sculptra® Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable that gradually replaces lost collagen, over time. It addresses nasolabial folds referred to as smile lines, marionette lines commonly known as laugh lines and chin wrinkles. 80% of patients were satisfied with their treatment results 25 months after their last injection when clinical trials ended. That is two years of steady collagen production to help you anti-age as naturally as you aged! Dysport®, is like Botox®. It is used to smooth moderate to severe glabellar lines or frown lines between the eyebrows. It can be used in the same places as Botox and can also diminish crows feet wrinkles around the eyes. It is quick as it only takes about 15 minutes to administer. Results begin to appear in 2-3 days as muscles relax. What’s the Dysport difference? The claim is that you will not look overdone or frozen after using Dysport. You will have a natural appearance without changing the look or movement of your face. Your lines disappear, not your expressions. Users claim results lasting for up to 4 months. Therefore, in 3 short visits a year, you can rid your pesky wrinkles! Both Sculptra® and Dysport® should only be injected by trained professionals such as board-certified plastic surgeons. Want to play before you pay? AGELESS is a mobile app visualizer. It can show you how you can age over 20 years and how you may look after an aesthetic treatment. Visit the App Store or Google Play to learn about AGELESS. Of f to London Town Joseph Brando Awarded Private Tour of The Crown Jewels
64
Joseph Brando of J. Vincent Jewelers in Colts Neck ranked as the number one retail diamond seller for Forevermark Diamonds US, a DeBeers owned company, earning him an incredible prize. The top ten retail diamond sellers were awarded a trip in September to London and Antwerp that included a private tour of The Crown Jewels housed in the Tower of London. When asked his secret for such an accomplishment, Brando replied, “Listening closely to what your clients are asking for in their diamond search, to be assured that their diamond will be the most beautiful, rare, and responsible sourced one they can find." Each of the ten Forevermark partners was flown to London from various regions of the United States and housed at The Corinthian Hotel. “The hotel is beautiful and classic in its design, the entire staff polished like a perfect diamond ready to please and pamper,” Brando shared. “The hotel is nested in the center of Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and of course Big Ben. That first evening, most of us in the group met and we feasted at the local Pub on local favorites like, Fish N’ Chips, Bangers & Mash and Yorkshire Pudding.” On the second day in London the group was treated to a trip to the Meiden Lane division of DeBeers London grading center for Forevermark. This is one of the locations DeBeers uses to test new technologies for detection of synthetic diamonds. Machinery is developed there to assure that every diamond mined is identifiable and tracked through a very rigorous process. The tour was followed by lunch at Windsor Castle. But it was the third day of the excursion that held a truly special honor. “We were driven to the Tower of London where our group had a private

tour of The Crown Jewels after closing hours,” Brando said. “After our tour we remained on site with our own private Beefeater guiding us to the Chambers of King Henry VIII, where a special dinner was prepared for us. This experience is extremely limited to a select few throughout the world. What an honor and privilege.” After dinner the retailers were moved to the Pouter Courts of the Tower. “We were able to see just how the passing of the keys from Her Majesty's Guard takes place,” Brando said. “It’s a tradition that has been done every evening for more than 700 years in order to protect and secure The Queen’s Castle and Tower.” once-in-a-lifetime trip The continued on to Antwerp, Belgium for a unique learning experience. Brando and the others toured the six various diamond grading labs at the Forevermark Diamond Institute and were instructed by some of the most educated gemologists and scientists in the industry. The tour concluded with a lecture from Brian Campbell, considered to be the go-to expert in the diamond industry.

to Host Couples’ Communication Workshop
ARE YOU AND YOUR PARTNER really listening to one another? Experience a more fulfilling relationship and enhance your communication at Lincroft Presbyterian Church’s workshop, “Couples’ Communication: Mastering the Art of Listening Seminar”, led by Performance Coach and Trainer Jeff Cartwright on Saturday, October 21, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the church, located at 270 Everett Road at the corner of West Front Street in Lincroft. A suggested donation of $20 per person includes seminar materials and a picnic box lunch. All committed couples are welcome and requested to kindly reserve a seat at http://bit.ly/ LPCCouples. “We hosted a highly successful session for couples earlier this year, and see a need in the community for committed couples to develop listening skills that will help their relationships with one another,” notes LPC Reverend Diane R. Ford. “After the session, we will discover new ways to expand the effectiveness of our listening, and how these can transform our relationships and ultimately expand the contribution we can be in the world.” With formal training in the areas of Psychology, Sociology, Functional Neurochemistry, and Evolutionary Biology, Jeff has been providing coaching and mentoring services for 25+ years, employing techniques from several dozen disciplines and influences. These influences range from world religions, traditional corporate courseware, current transformational techniques & methodologies, and emerging practices in continual development. “Most of us haven’t experienced much training or focus in the way we hear things. There is almost no training for being responsible for the way someone’s communication “lands” with us. We almost never get into a dialog about how to bring some effectiveness to our listening. Couples’ communication is especially vulnerable and riddled with breakdowns in our listening, causing considerable mischief between us and the spaces we share. This interactive program is designed to distinguish how we manage (or mismanage), those things that are said to us, or around us,” says Jeff Cartwright.

Holmdel Spur Helps Houston Houston Youth Soccer teams and found Houston Express SC and Michelle Romero. “When you lose everything, the last thing on your mind is soccer gear, but it would be an amazing thing,” Michelle wrote to Vic and Rosie in an e-mail. Initially the team was hoping for a few pairs of cleats and some balls to replace those they lost, but Vic knew they needed more. And the response has been overwhelming.
TWELVE-YEAR-OLD SOCCER PLAYER Victoria (Vic) Scholz, who plays for Holmdel’s Football Club NJX Spurs 04, is an example of an exceptional volunteer and a young woman helping where she can. Vic and her family live in Belford and were severely impacted by Hurricane Irene in 2011. Vic lost a large majority of her house, including all of her belongings in her playroom. Watching news coverage of Hurricane Harvey with her mom, the harsh memories of their ordeal came back to her. Vic decided to help. Vic and her mom, Rosie, searched
Vic and some other NJX players collected new and slightly used gear at Cross Farms one Sunday during soccer games. Rosie reached out to parents via e-mail. The Holmdel FC/NJX families came out in full force to donate items, including gift cards for the Houston players. “I am always so proud of all our group accomplishes on the field, but it is things like this that make me most proud to be associated with our club,” says Holmdel FC President Colleen Cook. “An outstanding group of players, coaches, and families provided an avenue and opportunity for a player to give back to our larger soccer community and the sport that she loves.”
Vic and Rosie reached out to the local women pro team, Sky Blue, and asked if Vic could put up a tent at their game against Washington to collect items. Sky Blue players got on board. “Make sure you get your new or used soccer gear to bring to our game tomorrow to send to Houston! Got mine all ready,” was tweeted out by player Kelly O’Hara with a picture of a dozen pair of brand new cleats. Rosie is a teacher in Union County where she shared fliers and has been receiving donations as well. The daunting task of getting a garage full of donations to Houston was answered by another NJX family that has a transportation company. They graciously offered to box and transport all of the items to Houston, free of charge. Holmdel’s Football Club (HFC)/NJX is comprised of dozens of volunteers, from the executive board to the coaches and team managers. Parents and siblings also help with goal moving, tournament parking, snack stands, and much more. But the Club finds it especially rewarding when a player steps up and makes such a big difference in the lives of strangers.

FCS Leading Lights Gala to Honor Docs of Rock, Former Board members Dolores Klein & Donald Bush
(FAMILY FCS & CHILDREN’S SERVICE), Monmouth County’s oldest, private, nonprofit social service agency, is proud to honor former FCS Board Chair Dolores Klein, long-time Board member Donald Bush and the philanthropic rock group, The Docs of Rock, at its 2017 FCS Leading Lights Gala, Saturday, October 14 at Navesink Country Club in Middletown. The honorees, who were announced during a special Gala Kick-Off reception at Navesink earlier this summer, are being recognized for their tireless advocacy on behalf of the agency, its Mission and those we serve. “Our honorees demonstrate the very best in our community;” explains FCS Board Chair Paul Stach. “They are individuals willing to commit their time and resources to improve the lives of others. We are honored to be the recipient of their longstanding generosity and enduring kindness.” Honoree Dolores Klein has been a part of the FCS family for 14 years. Dolores
first volunteered with the FCS Gala Committee in 2001 and quickly ascended to the agency’s Board of Directors where she served from 2002-2016, including two years as Board Chair. A gifted and talented event planner, Dolores chaired the FCS annual Gala three times, including its 100th Anniversary Gala Celebration in 2009. As Board Chair, she was also responsible for successfully shepherding FCS through difficult times in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, ensuring our 108-year-old agency would endure for years to come. Honoree Don Bush recently stepped down from the FCS Board of Directors after nearly 18-years of service. A retired executive with CHUBB insurance, Don brought his substantial professional experience to bear while on the Board, especially in matters of finance and Human Relations. Don served on the Board’s Finance, Program and Strategic Planning, and Personnel committees and could always be counted on to ask the key questions while responding to challenges with wisdom and insight. The Docs of Rock use their extraordinary talents to raise funds for many Monmouth County nonprofits. Made up entirely of doctors, band members include lead guitarist Lawrence Sykoff, Ed.D, headmaster emeritus at Ranney School, orthopedic
surgeon and bass guitarist Dr. David Lessing, M.D., dermatologist and drummer Dr. Kenneth Grossman, M.D., and pain management specialist and keyboardist Dr. Scott Woska, M.D. The four, along with several talented vocalists, perform exclusively at charitable events to raise money for non-profit organizations throughout Monmouth County, including The Parker Family Health Clinic, Oasis Autism, The Beauty Foundation, Lunch Break, and the Monmouth Day Care Center. Since forming in 2013, the band has helped raise more than $500,000 for community charities including more than $5,000 for FCS holiday-giving program Operation Sleighbells. The funds raised were used to support the program’s operations and to purchase toys, books, winter coats, hats and gloves, gift cards and infant necessities for approximately 2,000 vulnerable children and their families during the 2016 holiday season. This year’s Gala committee, led by co-chairs and FCS Board members Madonna Goss Robinson and Joanne Sadowsky, has put together an enjoyable evening of dinner and dancing to the music of New Life Crisis, as well as live and silent auctions. The Leading Lights Gala is FCS’s largest annual fundraiser, proceeds of which are used to support essential community programs and services including adult protective services, home care for the disabled and elderly, homeless prevention services, and literacy and nutrition programs for school children in underserved communities. Annual Gingerbread Ball Benefiting Fisher House Foundation
Raising Funds to help Wounded Military & Veterans SEVERAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS are hosting the Annual Gingerbread Ball on Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the beautifully renovated Ocean Place Resort and Spa, Long Branch. This premier holiday event will open with a social hour of delicious hors d’oeuvres followed by a lavish sit down dinner and open bar. Guests will enjoy Jersey Shore’s own Jazz Lobsters and dancing throughout the evening, along with holiday shopping at auction tables. Add to the memories of this festive evening with a custom photo by Joe Sharp, and of course, enjoying the quaintly delicious Gingerbread Village Display, comprised of entries in the Gingerbread House Competition, and judged by the New Jersey Baker’s Board of Trade! Meet and greet Miss New Jersey, Kaitlyn Shoeffel, who just recently was third runner up in the Miss America Pageant 2017. All funds raised will benefit the programs of the Fisher House Foundation. At the center of the evening, in honor of beloved service men and women, General Carter F. Ham, President and CEO of the Association of the United States Army and Brian Gawne, Vice President of Fisher House Foundation, will offer a tribute to our military heroes. The National Anthem will be performed by NJ Shore Native, Taylor Tote, a promising up and coming artist, whose “Fighter” video was the official selection of the Garden State Film Festival 2017. Fisher House Foundation is celebrating and commemorating 27 years of service to the military, veterans
and their families, providing comfort homes for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes provide a “home away from home” so military and veterans’ families can be close to their loved ones during a medical crisis. Today, there are 72 Fisher Houses across the country, in Germany and the United Kingdom. More than 305,000 families have been provided in excess of 7 million nights of lodging, saving them more than $350 million since the program began in 1990. Additionally, Fisher House Foundation’s Hero Miles program provides airline tickets that allow families to help heal together. More than $2 million in scholarships have been given to military and veteran family members and the Foundation has sponsored national and international wounded warrior athletic competitions to celebrate the return to health of disabled military and veterans. “The Fisher House program history is dedicated to those we are privileged to serve – our nation’s military, veterans and their families. Our service to them is a credit on a ledger we can never balance. We owe them literally more than we can ever repay,” said Ken Fisher, CEO and Chairman of The Fisher House Foundation. “But try we do. I remain humbled and awed every day by the generosity of those who have supported the Foundation. Because of their generosity, our military, veterans and their families know the nation is there for them.” For more information, visit www.ausa.org/monmouth.
Local Dental Center Raises Money for Parker Family Health Center & Children’s Charities DRS. MITCHEL FRIEDMAN, Aparna Menon and John Ding of Newman Springs Dental Care in Lincroft believe that having a whiter smile can do more than make you feel more confident; it can help sick and disadvantaged children get needed health care. The board of trustees accepted the check from Holmdel resident Dr. Mitchel Friedman, at the Parker Family Heather Center (PFHC) in Red Bank. Dr. Friedman, his staff and patients together raised $3,785 by whitening the donor’s smiles. The donation was shared equally between the Smiles For Life and Parker Family Health Center (PFHC). Check out the no-sugar swag that can still mark your house the best trick-or-treating spot on the block.

Photography Exhibit to Mark Five Year Sandy Anniversary A NEW EXHIBIT OF PHOTOGRAPHS titled “91 Days; Countless Nights” documents the aftermath and recovery from Superstorm Sandy. More than 60 photographs will go on display in Brookdale Community College’s Center for Visual Arts (CVA) Gallery on October 20, 2017 and will run through November 12. Featuring the work of Shark River Hills-based photographer Kevin R. Burkitt, the exhibit includes dozens of long-exposure photos taken throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties from November 2012 to April 2015. Photographer Kevin R. Burkitt
The images, captured exclusively between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., document the radical transformation of local communities in the wake of the storm, rather than the “iconic” images of destruction that appeared on the national news, said Burkitt. “Growing up where I did, I never appreciated the quality and the character of the structures where we lived. Within 48 hours, it was gone,” said Burkitt, a Manasquan native. “I’m hoping this exhibit will help people remember what it was like five years ago, and to appreciate both the power of nature and the beauty of the world around them. It can all change so quickly, and for many people, it will never be the same again.” The exhibit is funded in part by a grant from the Monmouth County Arts Council.
