CNBA Hosts Annual Polo Classic
The second annual Colts Neck Business Association (CNBA) Polo Classic was held last month with more than 500 people in attendance. Two local favorites were back for a rematch with Delicious Orchards defending its title against Huddy’s Inn. CNBA President Dino Nicoletta welcomed those present with committee woman Sue Fitzpatrick who led the committee that organized the event. The day included the presentation of the honor guard of colors by the Colts Neck High School ROTC; Captain Ed Callahan, commander Naval Weapon Station Earle, led the Pledge of Allegiance; Greg Penza sang the National Anthem; Pastor Chris Durkin of the Colts Neck Community Church offered an invocation. Carol Stillwell of Colts Neck rolled out the first ball to get the match started. Stillwell Stables was the VIP Event Sponsor. Other sponsors included World Jeep, Delicious Orchards, Huddy’s Inn, Heritage House Sotheby’s International Realty, Holmdel Funeral Home, Brock Farm, Investors Bank, Manasquan Bank, NJ Sinus Center, A-Norton Septic Contracting, Luongo CPA, and the NJ Office Systems. “I am so grateful for all the support from our community and our sponsors for making it a success,” said Sue Fitzpatrick. “I especially loved seeing the children so enthralled with the horses. The Tinicum Park Polo Team and the Colts Neck Trail Riders, who put on a special half-time show, were so attentive to those young spectators. It was a wonderful family event! And a very exciting finish.” Huddy’s had pulled ahead for most of the match but in the last chukker Delicious Orchards tied it up; Huddy’s scored two goals in the closing minutes to win 12-10. The hat contest was won by Agnes Duffy and Dawn Reinhardt. The tailgate contest was won by Fran Attardi and Tamara Woolley & friends for their speak-easy theme - “Prohibition & Polo”. Monies raised from the day will go to the grooming and maintenance of the walking and riding trails of Colts Neck and Colts Neck’s First Responders. Scott Belford Named Head Coach of Women’s Rowing at Monmouth University
Monmouth University announced that women’s rowing has been chosen as the school’s 24th NCAA Division I sport with regular season competition starting in Fall 2022. Scott Belford of Red Bank has been hired as the program’s first head coach and will begin his tenure at Monmouth immediately. “Scott elevated himself above a talented pool of candidates and is the right person to lead us through this new challenge,” said Director of Athletics Jeff Stapleton. Belford comes to Monmouth following an 18-year run as the head coach of varsity crew at nearby Christian Brothers Academy, where he started the program in 2004. Belford has built CBA into a rowing power and oversaw all aspects of the program, including budget, fundraising, scheduling, travel, equipment, and staff. “I am so pleased to be adding women’s rowing to our impressive roster of Division I sports at Monmouth,” said University President Patrick F. Leahy. “This is a strategic investment both in athletics and academic excellence, and will help to serve our growing number of women students enrolled at Monmouth. Newly hired head coach Scott Belford is an outstanding addition to our athletics coaching staff. His keen understanding of high school recruitment and deep knowledge of the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers will be a tremendous asset as we develop this significant new program.” In addition to his success at CBA, Belford has experience at all levels of the sport. He founded Monmouth Junior Rowing Club in 2017, has coached the United States Junior National Team on multiple occasions, and has spent time as an assistant coach in the Ivy League with Penn (2000-03) and Princeton (1999-00). Other coaching duties for Belford include his stint as the Head Coach of Women’s Rowing at Nike Sports Camps in Philadelphia for three summers, Master Coach at Northeast Rowing Center for two years, and the Junior Rowing Head Coach at Navesink River Rowing Club. Belford began his coaching career as the head coach at William & Mary in 1998 after his graduation from Rutgers, where he was a team captain and four-year member of the lightweight crew team. “I want to thank President Leahy, Jeff Stapleton and the search committee for placing their faith in me,” said Belford. “Building an NCAA Division I women’s rowing program from the ground up is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and one that I am extremely grateful for. I look forward to creating a program that lives up to the outstanding athletic and academic traditions here at Monmouth University and cannot wait to get started.”

Domestic Violence Domestic Violence has become an all too common phenomenon in American society. In response to this burgeoning problem, New Jersey enacted the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act in 1991. Since then it has been amended several times in an effort to better address the needs of victims for protection and the behavior of the perpetrators of the violence. Domestic violence is specifically defined in the statute and includes attempted murder, assault, harassment, stalking, kidnapping and terroristic threats. There are other offenses that may also constitute domestic violence under the statute. It is intended to protect spouses, ex-spouses, present or former household members, persons who have a child together and persons who had a dating relationship. If one of these predicate acts occurs, the victim may file a complaint in which he/she asks for a restraining order. If the judge agrees that the actions of the defendant constitute domestic violence, the judge will issue a temporary restraining order or TRO. Peter C. Paras
is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C.
If the incident occurs during normal business hours (i.e., 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday), the Complaint must be filed in the Superior Court. If the incident occurs after hours or on weekends, the restraining order may be requested of the municipal court judge in the town in which the incident occurred. The temporary restraining order will contain a date for a full hearing in the Superior Court at which the victim and the defendant may each testify under oath and may each offer the testimony of other witnesses. At the conclusion of the hearing, the judge will decide whether to make the TRO a Final Restraining Order (FRO) or to dismiss the complaint and the TRO altogether. The victim has the burden of proving that an act of domestic violence occurred and that the protection of a restraining order is needed. If a judge decides that a restraining order is justified by the facts, a variety of other issues in the Order may then be addressed.

Among them are possession of the residence, custody of the children, parenting time and support. The judge also has the authority to order the confiscation of firearms and other weapons by law enforcement officers. In these cases, a judge’s task can be particularly difficult. The stakes are high. The victim’s safety is paramount, but so is protecting the defendant’s constitutional right to due process. Often these cases come down to a “he said/she said” proposition. With relatively limited facts, a judge must decide the credibility of the victim’s and the defendant’s accounts. Domestic violence knows no ethnic, racial or economic boundaries. It affects, with nearly equal intensity, virtually every municipality in New Jersey. Although the Act is a tool for protecting victims, changing our culture and attacking the problem at its root causes is, in the long run, the approach that will create bigger benefits for our society.

The Pivot I want to share a truism that was planted and instilled in me early on by my parents, and later in life reinforced through my own experiences: “What you ‘expect’ in life has power to direct the course of your life.” This one raw gift that my mom and dad bestowed on me was the attitude that “you can do anything, be anything, and deserve everything you work for”. We didn’t grow up with money, but somehow, they always made us feel rich. They never burdened us three boys with how bad it got, only how good it could be… even though my dad would levy his post-war immigrant mindset to shut the “empty room” lights, adjust the thermostat, and save aluminum foil – a tradition that somehow pivoted and inadvertently carried on as I became the dad. Back to the point: our expectations about our relationships, work, finances, and every other area of life are almost always either positive or negative, rarely neutral. Positive expectations trigger optimistic anticipation, encouragement, and hope, (In fact, the absence of good expectations is a definition of hopelessness). Negative expectations such as, “This marriage is hopeless”, “I’m never gonna be able to ____”, “This day is gonna suck”, often lead to a downhill snowball of negative thoughts, anxiety, and ultimately, poor choices. Remember, if you think you can, or you think you can’t … you’re right! Of course in real life, bad things happen. No one is immune, but if you EXPECT THIS as a regular part of your life, you can almost guarantee it will be. On the other hand, if you choose to maintain an attitude of optimistic expectation, despite the problems and challenges you face, you will directionally be on the lookout for what you expect - and you will consistently find it! Forcing your mind to expect good things in your life will help quell thoughts and feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness and will open the door to greater self-directed peace and clearer decisions. Like a garden, weeds grow by default – if you want flowers and fruit, one must make an effort and prune. Consider the emotions of fear, worry, and anxiety. Whenever you experience these emotions, you are at that very moment creating a set of negative expectations. For instance, when you worry about something, you are at that moment expecting that something could or will go wrong. With this expectation at the forefront of your mind, you are now going to make decisions and take actions that meet that expectation. Of course, whatever you are worried about might just be a figment of your
imagination. In fact, think about it - most often our worries never come to fruition. However, we don’t tend to believe that at the time, and as a result, our negative expectations lead to certain behaviors, decisions and actions that skew or alter our course, our focus, and our attention. Expectations tend to create our reality, or at the very least our behavior. We all know people who have a dark cloud hanging over them; you can see it in their faces and mannerisms. On the other hand, it’s interesting to take a look at what factors potentially distinguish high achievers from the masses. High achievers often have very ambitious expectations and goals; they are big thinkers and visionaries. The late, great Steve Jobs once said, “Those who are crazy enough to think they change the world are the ones who actually do.” But it’s not just great ideas and vision – it’s having the drive and strength to execute as well as the work ethic to achieve these goals and objectives. They tend to set challenging deadlines that keep them motivated and don’t procrastinate. They live with a sense of urgency. They thrive on criticism and love to prove others wrong. What separates high achievers is they quickly pivot to manage expectations. This one thing prevents others from moving forward - “the pivot”. To them, like Apollo 13, FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. I personally believe that the power of good expectation comes from two key sources: (1) your natural ability and desire to direct your thoughts, feelings and actions toward a desired or “expected” outcome and, (2) the control you have to choose healthy thoughts. You may not be able to choose what pops into your mind, but you can choose which thoughts you allow to stay! Humor me. As you go about your day today, fill your mind with good and positive expectations, PIVOT, and then watch for the evidence of their existence everywhere you go.

A Message from the Holmdel Mayor Last month, the Holmdel community gathered to remember and mourn those neighbors who we lost on September 11, 2001. Our emergency service workers, residents, and 9/11 families met at the monument in front of Town Hall to pay tribute with a somber and patriotic ceremony. The attacks that occurred twenty years ago were a profound loss for New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and indeed the entire nation. But today we have much to look forward to and we have hope for a better tomorrow. In the years since 2001 we have seen our country come together in ways that were both unexpected and inspiriting. Let us continue to work together to ensure that the sacrifice our neighbors and friends made is never forgotten, that America continues to be a safe place to live, and that freedom is preserved here and throughout the world. Holmdel Township will never forget the people we lost on September 11th nor the sacrifices made on that day by first responders. We pray for the continued healing of their families, and we commit to live our lives in a way that honors them. As always, I thank you for everything you do to help move Holmdel Forward! Greg Buontempo, Mayor of Holmdel

Colts Neck Mayor Michael Viola with Theresa Furmato
Forty-seven people who were born in Monmouth County, raised in Monmouth County, or living in Monmouth County died on 9/11 as a result of the terrorist attacks that shook the nation on September 11, 2001. To honor the 20th anniversary, The National September 11 Memorial & Museum led the nation, and the world, in marking the passage of two decades. Colts Neck lost five of its own that day and honored the fallen with an evening ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance, the sight of the monument in town by internationally known sculptor Jim Gary.

After a Christian Brothers Academy Piper opened the ceremony with the bagpipes, Colts Neck High School NJROTC Color Guard presented the flag while Sheriff Shaun Golden led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Atiles Sisters Quartet sang the National Anthem, then Colts Neck Mayor Michael Viola offered a welcome before the Invocation by Rev. Scott Brown of the CN Reformed Church. on the somber day. Velardi spoke of memories of her father, Paul James Furmato, who she lost at the age of five. After the ringing of the bells and a moment of silence, Monmouth County Commissioner Lillian G. Burry read the poem We Remember Them. The Exultation Ringers of the Colts Neck Reformed Church played America the Beautiful followed by Pastor Chris Durkin of the Colts Neck Community Church offering the Benediction. First Responders presented a floral wreath, and NWS Earle provided Taps as the ROTC retired the colors.

A Whimsical Sanctuary with a Global Influence How a “Pandemic Project” Shaped a Locust Backyard
BY LILIANN PARAS PHOTO: CARMELA CARACAPPA PHOTOGRAPHY
Jennifer’s foray into the wider world began early as a young dancer with Broadway touring groups and later, in a wildly different capacity, as a researcher and consultant in the sphere of Gender Equality and Human Rights. She earned a Master’s Degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, U.K., and worked around the globe for various international non-governmental organizations with a particular focus on women in East and Southern Africa. Jennifer’s life abroad enabled her to experience various cultures, landscapes and climates. This opportunity, paired with her love of nature, allowed her to connect with people all across the planet through the shared sense of the importance and healing properties of plants.
J
ennifer Elle Lewis is truly a woman of the world. A self-described “Jersey Boomerang”, she grew up in Monmouth County, lived and worked in far-flung areas of the world, and returned to Locust fulltime seven years ago, where she and T.J. are raising their two young sons and enjoying the company of her mother. One common thread throughout her entire life and across her eclectic experiences is her passion for gardening. Jennifer’s gardening talents, global experiences, and artistic eye have combined and culminated in an enchanting garden in the backyard of her home. CM: Where are some of the places you have traveled to or lived in for your work with human rights? Jennifer: For work I’ve lived in New York, South Africa, The Dominican Republic, and Tanzania, but I’ve traveled for research projects or symposiums around the world, to places like Rwanda, Namibia, Morocco, Finland, and India. CM: Did you find time to garden while in these countries? Jennifer: I seem to garden everywhere I go. In my dingy NYC apartment, I had gardens rigged up to the fire escape and grew climbing moonflowers. In my first London flat, I installed window boxes to grow herbs. In Santo Domingo, there was a Ylang-Ylang Tree in the yard, and I would collect flowers to fragrance my bedroom every night. CM: Did you have the opportunity to garden with people you met while abroad? Jennifer: South Africa was paradise. I rented a cottage on a large property and my landlady/friend and I both loved gardening. The area around my cottage had been mainly utilitarian, but we pick-axed out some old concrete to create a vegetable garden with a “rondavel” covered in jasmine. Weekends were often spent at plant nurseries – and it was not uncommon for me to arrive back home in my vintage 1984 Mercedes Sedan with a spiky tree hanging out the rear-passenger window. Perhaps the most eye-opening experience was in rural Tanzania. I stayed at the home of an awe-inspiring woman aptly named
“Mama Jennifer,” who ran her own personal (off-grid) homestead and organized women in the community. She showed me what could be achieved with very little means, and a lot of determination. She grew edible and medicinal plants as well as having a lovely flower garden. Her village could only be reached by foot, a several miles walk from the end of a dirt road. CM: How has living abroad influenced you, and your present garden? Jennifer: While I’ve always been enchanted by nature, living across the globe has only solidified this magic for me. A dear friend in South Africa is a traditional “Sangoma” or healer, who taught me about the power of native plants and even the “souls” of trees. The garden was not just a space for her, but for her ancestors – which only added another dimension to my understanding of the “purpose” of a garden. But, of course, it makes sense. After all, don’t trees outlive us all? I also strive to repurpose and reuse natural and uncommon materials, like the ingenuity in Mama Jennifer’s garden in Tanzania. With this in mind, T.J. and I build fences out of fallen tree limbs instead of new lumber. We cut the tops off water jugs to turn them into planters. And we try to feed our family from what we grow. Since I studied in the U.K., I’m also a sucker for a classic English Garden, so elements of my style reflect that as well. CM: When did you first realize you loved gardening? Jennifer: I started gardening with my mother when I was three. I would help her plant annuals every year, and my favorite
thing was to spend the whole day outside, getting covered in dirt, then washing it all off later on. CM: How did you acquire your deeper understanding of plants and gardens? Jennifer: As a child, I read plant catalogues (instead of comics), and my mother would quiz me on plant names on long road trips – that were usually to places like Longwood Gardens (instead of Great Adventure!) At one point I took a course at Cooper Union in Landscape Design – but found it too “math based” - I always leaned toward a more organic process.
CM: What was the impetus behind the garden at your home? Jennifer: I wanted to create a whimsical sanctuary for my family-which has now grown exponentially since the pandemic. It was important for me that my children un-

derstand where food comes from, and the power of growing your own food, while also making a garden that was fun, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing. CM: What was involved in starting the garden? Jennifer: Since we found ourselves homebound due to COVID-19, we tried to occupy the time and create fun experiences for our kids. I think a lot of people turned to home improvement projects as a creative outlet during the pandemic; we just put most of our focus into our garden. Our first “pandemic-project” (March 2020), was to salvage an early 1900s greenhouse that had fallen into disrepair, and convert it into a French-style Potagér. We removed the old broken glass, power-washed, and gave it a fresh coat of paint – assembled a few raised planter boxes, re-purposed some teak patio furniture (found on recycling day in Fair Haven), and it became a walled vegetable garden. CM: How has the garden evolved? Jennifer: Usually, I come to T.J. with a crazy idea, and he figures out how we can make it happen. T.J. is a great sport – and an engineer – both of which have proven immensely helpful! I recently persuaded him to build me a six-foot tall strawberry pyramid on wheels, and a “fairy tale” style fence with the fallen branches of a neighbor’s tree. We have built grapevine orbs that hang from our trees; garden arches
32
made from statuesque tree limbs; trellising out of branches and twigs; and bean-covered tepees- all from materials that I would have otherwise discarded while cleaning up my yard. Many of these creations glow at night, using solar powered lights. CM: Your sons are very comfortable helping in the garden. Is there an aspect they particularly enjoy? Jennifer: As we have two active boys, I wanted to create a woodland playground. One day I saw five-foot in diameter hollowed out tree trunks on the side of the
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
road, and knew we had to get them home. After some persuading, I got someone to help me transport the “logs,” and then T.J used some ancient Egyptian building techniques to move them into position. Now they are the best jungle gym a kid could ask for. CM: You have unusual plants- what are some of your favorites? Jennifer: Right now, we have some tromboncino squashes ready - they are threefoot-long trombone shaped hanging zucchinis. I dare you to look at one and not laugh. Really. CM: What are some of the reactions from visitors? Jennifer: Friends have mentioned they feel transported to another world. Some even remark that time seems to move differently. Most people admire the creativity, and the sculptural aspects of the space. Others, like to see a bountiful garden filled with delicious things to eat. A family friend who was a child during World War 2, wrote me a letter to thank us for our ingenuity – it reminded her of her childhood during the War, and how her mother taught her that food and resources should be treated as precious. It meant a lot to her to see that same spirit in effect today. I cannot tell you how much it means to be able to share our world with others who enjoy it.

The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners, in conjunction with the 53 municipalities in Monmouth County, hosted “Light Up the Shore” in honor of the lives lost and the fearless display of heroism by rescue teams and citizens who responded to the tragedy on September 11, 2001. “It was truly awe-inspiring to see the turnout across the County to honor the lives lost during the 9/11 attacks and to recognize the bravery and courage of our first responders who ran toward danger at risk of their own personal safety,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “I want to personally thank Belmar resident Frank Mezel for suggesting this wonderful idea and I want to thank everyone who came out and participated in lighting up the shore.” “The ‘Light up the Shore’ event helped signify that even in the darkness of 9/11 that people’s genuine good shined a light on all of us,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley. “These lights are a symbol that we will never forget and will continue to support those affected by the terrorist attacks of 9/11.”

5 Fall Inspired Foods That Are Safe & Healthy for Your Pet With the holiday season almost upon us, we need to know what we can and cannot share with our four-legged friends. Here’s how you can treat your pet to healthy alternatives this season or better yet, all year ‘round! It is always important to keep in mind that calories from commercial treats and table foods should not make up more than 10% of a pet’s total caloric intake and calories from table foods can add up very quickly. Temptation is hard to resist when you look at that bag of leftover Halloween candy or the urge to get seconds during Thanksgiving dinner. While we eat well, we want our pets to take part in the delicious food as well, right? However, we do not want to feed our pets just any table scraps and leftovers in the fridge. Feeding them spicy or fatty goods, for example, can cause them to experience upset stomachs. Below is a list of fall-inspired foods that are not only healthy and nutritious for us humans but are also foods we can feel confident in feeding and sharing with our beloved pets!
#1 Carrots
Carrots contain Vitamin A and have added health benefits to keep your pet’s eyes, digestive system, coats, breath, and immune system in check. Additionally, it is best to slightly boil the carrots for your pets before serving them, as raw carrots are much harder to chew and digest.
#2 Pumpkin
Autumn season means pumpkin spice and everything nice. Pumpkin is a nutrient-rich food that is low in calories but packed with essential vitamins and minerals. In addition, canned pumpkin contains a good source of soluble and insoluble fiber to help with digestive health (diarrhea and constipation).
#3 Sweet Potatoes
‘Taters or yams, however you call them, sweet potatoes can be a great addition to your pet’s diet. Sweet potatoes are high in fiber, low in fat and a 10/10 on the taste meter. Fiber is a nutrient that all dogs should be getting in their diet, as it is instrumental in maintaining a healthy digestive system and managing a healthy weight.
#4 Peanut Butter
Peanut Butter is a healthy and safe treat for pets to eat in small moderate amounts. Containing both healthy (protein, Vitamins B, E and Niacin) & non-healthy nutrients (high in fat and calories), peanut butter should only be administered in a treat form as it can be easy to overfeed within diets. In addition, when buying peanut butter, make sure you choose regular, raw, unsalted, or unsweetened peanut butter that does NOT contain xylitol.
#5 Apples
Apples make a great addition to any grocery list, especially if it benefits your pet! Apples provide significant amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and can be given in multiple ways: mashed, sliced, mushed, or chopped. Always remember to remove the seeds before feeding your pet apples as they pose a choking hazard in smaller pets. While each of these food items can help your pet to live a more vibrant and healthy life, remember again that it is best to serve only small to moderate amounts of these foods and to monitor your beloved pet for any signs or symptoms of a reaction to foods not typically found in their diets. As always, if your pet experiences an emergency from any of the above foods, Red Bank Veterinary Hospital is there for you and them, 24/7/365.

Beyond the Brand | Meet Tom Paolella
By LiliAnn Paras
Enjoy the Process is a saying that applies to many events in our lives— for most people, shopping for a car or truck is not one of them. One common complaint is a lack of confidence that the dealer has offered the best price. (Remember the Seinfeld dealership episode and the line item for “additional overcharge”?) Others find it tedious, confusing, or time-consuming. Then there is Tom Paolella who embraces the process. Nine years ago, Tom founded Car Concierge Plus, a unique service to level the playing field between dealers and buyers. CM: What services does Car Concierge Plus offer? Tom: Our mission is to be a true advocate on behalf of our clients. We save our clients countless hours of shopping and the hassle of negotiating, and also take care of all the initial legwork involved, including test drives. Clients simply let us know the vehicle they want, and we negotiate with multiple dealerships until we get the lowest possible price (which we guarantee in writing or their money back). Some clients don’t know what they want, so we take the time to give our unbiased opinion and truly listen to their needs. We can also negotiate the value of their trade-in and save additional money by negotiating extended warranties, tire insurance, etc. CM: How do you differ from other similar companies? Tom: Car Concierge Plus is in a category of its own. We are not car “brokers” as we do not accept a penny from the dealership itself. Many of our clients come to us after they have tried other companies and experienced deals falling through at the very end, or the numbers changing at the time of signing papers. CM: Your testimonials are glowing endorsements. What surprises your clients the most about Car Concierge Plus? Tom: We are proud to have hundreds of 5-star reviews. Clients constantly mention just how drama-free the process is-- and that we should charge more! Most of our clients never knew a service like this existed but once they do, the word-of-mouth referrals are through the roof – we have one family who has used our services 14 times among the family! CM: Clients suggesting you should charge more is high praise! How are you compensated? Tom: Unlike others, our flat service fee is stated up front, with no sliding scale. Typically, clients can expect to pay within a range of $450 for
a pre-owned vehicle and $550 for a new one. Many other consultants charge a fluctuating percentage based upon the market, type of car, etc. CM: Are there any particular clients/stories that resonate? Tom: One that immediately comes to mind is the family who was in a terrible accident the morning they were supposed to leave for their dream Disney vacation. We used every resource at our disposal and the family was in their brand-new minivan ready for their road-trip in less than four hours after the initial call. Another is a wife who surprised her sick husband with his dream Corvette before he passed. These are just a few; there are countless first-time high school drivers, surprise anniversaries, and more. (Laughs) I could write a book that would have you in tears by the end of chapter one. It never ceases to amaze me how we can become part of a family’s life after helping them through a stressful time. My clients are THE most loyal folks I know and are nurses, plumbers, teachers, and Fortune 500 CEOs to name a few – all sharing the same car buying stress. CM: Favorite Quote/ Philosophy? Tom: “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” In nine years, I have more than 1000 clients across 48 states. I am so proud that the original philosophy of “putting the customer first” is still at the heart of every deal we do. We treat each and every client – those with the $5000 budget or the $500,000 budget- like they are all buying a Rolls Royce.

Camp Vienna Raises Funding for Library
Left to right: Teacher Nicky Raviele, Diane Wunderler Hubka (Denise’s sister), Dr. Denise Wunderler (Vienna’s mom, Founder/ President of Team Vienna), Maria George (owner of The Enchanted Treehouse Academy)
Camp Vienna was held in September for children two to eight years old at the Enchanted Treehouse Academy in Lincroft. A large portion of the proceeds were donated to Team Vienna 4 SUDC Awareness for Vienna’s Little Library at the school, creating a reading area in honor of Vienna Carly Savino, a toddler who suddenly passed with no known medical reason. The one-week summer camp was full of fun, reading, crafts, songs, dance, and other activities, that Vienna would have loved. “I wanted to help in some way that would be a lasting visible fixture at our childcare center where many would see it,” said the owner of Enchanted Treehouse Academy, Holmdel’s Maria George. “I was moved to tears,” shared Dr. Denise Wunderler, founder of Team Vienna and Vienna’s mother. “I never thought Camp Vienna would evolve so quickly and help more kids like this. Really amazing! It all started with remembering my little girl. We want Vienna to never be forgotten. She will always be a part of our family.”

A Red Carpet for RUSHED
The movie RUSHED premiered in Red Bank at the Basie Center Cinemas. Rumson’s own Siobhan Fallon Hogan wrote, produced, and starred in this suspenseful film which addresses the important and timely issue of fraternity hazing rituals. The movie focuses on the emotional issues experienced by a suburban mother who must deal with the aftermath of her son’s tragic fraternity hazing. A festive party of friends and supporters gathered at Dublin House before the premiere, eagerly awaiting the red-carpet rollout of the movie. Once inside the theater, the upbeat crowd transformed into a silent one, sitting at the edge of their seats as
they watched a broken-hearted mother seek revenge for her son after receiving only hollow promises from officials. Given Fallon Hogan’s comedy background at SNL and in numerous movies and sit-coms, there are some lighter moments, but mostly, Fallon Hogan delivers a believable, intense dramatic performance. Much of RUSHED was filmed in Monmouth County, and viewers are sure to recognize the area and even some local residents who appear in it. RUSHED can be viewed on Amazon, AppleTV, iTunes, vudu and other services.

SJV Welcomes Class of 2025
Ushers in Year of In-Person Learning
Saint John Vianney High School extended a hearty welcome to the Lancer Class of 2025! Last month, the private Catholic, co-educational high school welcomed more than 800 students back to its Holmdel campus, including nearly 200 freshmen, for the start of the 2021-22 school year. Grounded in more than 50 years of Catholic tradition, and rooted in its values of Knowledge, Commitment and Involvement, Saint John Vianney High School (SJV) serves families from Monmouth, Middlesex, and Ocean Counties, offering a challenging, well-rounded academic program to prepare students for success in college and life. “We are excited to have our students back in the classroom!” exclaimed SJV Principal Margaret Kane. “It is such a joy to watch them collaborating again, sharing their experiences, and gaining the benefit of a supportive and nurturing Catholic school education.” Ten new full and part-time teachers also joined the SJV family this year, bringing the total number of educators to 54 and giving SJV an impressive 15:1 student-teacher ratio. “Small class sizes enable our faculty to get to know each and every student,” Mrs. Kane explains. “We care about and are invested in student success. It’s what makes SJV such a special place to teach and to learn.” “Last year at this time, teachers, administrators and staff were charged with safely reopening our buildings to our students, while at the same time, educating students remotely,” Mr. DiMezza explained. “It was remarkable how quickly and dynamically we rose to the occasion, thanks in part to previous investments made to our technological infrastructure.” Students interested in learning more about SJV are encouraged to visit SJVHS.com or contact the Office of Enrollment Management at 732.739.0800 ext. 155. Interested students are invited to register and attend one of SJV’s Fall Open Houses, October 23 or October 28. Online virtual tours and in-person tours are also available.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Held 15th Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament
Recreational Division Winners - Seaview Orthopaedic (Photo Credit Charleen Cucci)
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Coastal & Northern New Jersey (BBBSCNNJ) held its 15th Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament on September 12 on Main Street beach in Manasquan. The tournament included 29 teams of 6-8 people who each raised at least $100 to participate. There were two divisions: competitive and recreational. Each division had its own set of prizes and trophies, including a $1,000 prize for the competitive division winner generously donated by Surf Taco. Tournament sponsor Keith P. Walsh & Sons Plumbing & Heating donated an additional $1,000 for the recreational division this year. New team, Sandy Pipes, won the competitive division and returning team Seaview Orthopaedic took home the recreational division prize. Additionally, tournament sponsor and first-time team, Fortune Flyers of Fortune Title Agency, took home the Highest Fundraising Team trophy; and longtime tournament competitor, Michael Weshnak, earned the Highest Fundraising Individual award. “Our volleyball tournament continues to grow each year, and we are grateful for the support and enthusiasm of the community that helps us raise funds for our one-to-one mentoring programs. This year we had more teams than ever before which results in more volunteers matched with children in our community for life-changing one-to-one mentoring,” said William A. Salcedo, Executive Director of BBBSCNNJ. “Thank you to everyone who sponsored, participated, and volunteered for this incredible event.” The event raised more than $35,000 this year and all proceeds will benefit the expansion of programs offered by BBBSCNNJ to fulfill its mission to create and support oneto-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
