A Season for Gratitude
A
ndy Williams sang about how it’s the most wonderful time of the year – and I couldn’t agree with him more. The holiday season is just around the corner with Thanksgiving kicking it off on November 27! To be honest with you, I started listening to Christmas music in October. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I get excited, and it’s definitely not for the gifts. As most of you will agree, presents for us adults are a thing of the past, but it’s more about the gatherings with family and friends that I look forward to. Sure, when you get a bunch of people in the same room who share similar DNA, things can get a little touchy, but the one thing we need to remember is that in the end, all we have is each other.
Let us use our 30+ years of experience, education and knowledge of plants and landscape construction to enhance your outdoor oasis today.

As we celebrate with family gatherings, festive meals and laughter – let’s not forget to reflect on the needs of those who may be less fortunate than us. There are many local non-profits and charities that need our help, whether it be volunteering or a monetary donation. The staff at Community Magazine (CM) and myself would like to wish you and your family a happy and healthy Thanksgiving and holiday season! All my best,

olmdel Football Association (HFA) hosted their first annual Poker Night at the North Centerville Volunteer Fire Company in Hazlet on September 26, 2014. Fifty players registered but close to 50 more people showed up to give their support through the purchase of tickets. Organizer of the event Yilan Lazarou said that the fundraiser not only helped the HFA but it also helped to bring the community together. HFA Board President Joe Hernando said, “Thank you to all the parents, volunteers, and members of the community who are here to support us. Your participation at events like this one help make this organization special.” Flag Football Commissioner Joe Todisco

noted that this was a great night for the parents to get together and enjoy a social evening. The funds raised will go toward new equipment and uniforms for the 2014 season of youth football and cheer. As stated on their website, HFA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enable the children and young adults of Holmdel to actively participate in football and cheerleading in a safe, structured and positive environment, which will enable them to learn fundamental values, skills, and knowledge that will be useful throughout their lives.

earborn Market held its third annual Apple Festival on September 27 and 28, 2014 in celebration of the beginning of autumn. Visiting and enjoying the two-day event were families and those who regularly shop at Dearborn. Tempting them were the sight of many bushels filled with freshly picked and delivered apples from New York State, such as Mackintosh, Red Delicious, Gala, Winesap, Cortland, and many more. The outdoor festival area offered some samples of store-made apple pies, turnovers, loaves, apple cider donuts, candy and caramel coated apples, and of course, apple cider. And the weekend would not be complete without a roundtrip ride on the Hay Wagon that took families to the pumpkin patch; the Corn Maze and Hale Bale Maze; Hay Bale Pyramid; Hay Bale Tunnel; and the use of the colorful Harvest back drop photo set. All this could be topped off with a special pony ride. Dearborn Market will be offering many familyfriendly events through November and December. PTA President Siobhan Smith noted there was a great turnout for the school by the Lincroft community. “Between the perfect autumn day, the games and crafts, and the gardening packages provided by our gracious host Molzon’s Nursery, the PTA Board would like to say ‘Thank you!’ to all who contributed to a successful outcome. I especially want to congratulate our committee chairs Sue Cacoilo and Angela Brzyski, the parent and teen volunteers, for running a very well-organized fundraiser. This was my first official fundraiser as PTA President and I hope they all go as smoothly as this.” Co-chair Sue Cacoilo said of the event, “Every year there is so much that goes into planning every little aspect of this event. I think that Angela and I become truly humbled by how everyone in our community steps up to make it happen and to make it a truly successful event. In the end, their help and support is instrumental in making Molzon’s Fall Festival the success that it was and has always been.” Co-chair Angela Brzyski said, “The Fall Festival is really a great way to kick-off the year for our school. It’s the first fundraiser but it is always a beautiful day for families to get together

As one of only five women in the Electrical Engineering program at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), Red Bank Catholic 2014 graduate Karley Hilden is deep in her studies and excited to be there. “The engineering program at TCNJ is both challenging and rewarding and I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.” Karley recalls how she discovered her interest in engineering while she was a student at RBC, primarily because of what she learned from one her teachers. “One of my favorite teachers was Mr. Lutz. He played a very important role in my decision to study engineering.” As she looks back, Karley realizes that the most important decision she made during high school was “to take the engineering class offered by RBC. I knew from early on that I really enjoyed math, but it was not until I took that class that I became interested in applying math to reallife situations. Mrs. Walas and Mr. Lutz did an excellent job of introducing us to the fundamentals of engineering, which ultimately led me to choose it as my major.” The Pre-Engineering class at Red Bank Catholic is team taught by Mr. Timothy Lutz and Mrs. Angela Walas. The two teachers developed the college level course curriculum, dedicating the first semester to mechanical engineering taught by Mrs. Walas, and the second semester to electrical engineering taught by Mr. Lutz. In the state-of-the-art engineering classroom, students learn how to apply principles of physics and math to design, build and operate. As RBC Vice-Principal Mrs. Karen Falco points out, “In the process of this learning, students see the possibilities there are for them if they decide to pursue a career in engineering. They gain practical experience as to what they would be learning as engineering students in college.” So far, Karley is enjoying the challenges presented by the TCNJ program. “It allows us, as students, to learn through hands-on experiments, and to work with professors who are truly passionate about the field. I find myself becoming more and more interested in my classes every day.”

O
n October 11, 2014, the Village School PSA organized its first Trunk or Treat to start off the Halloween season. About 21 families decorated their cars in the spirit of Halloween and Village School students did some trick or treating right at their school with their friends and families! More
than 200 ghosts, goblins, witches, princesses and Teenage Ninja Turtles attended the event and had a good time. Even Mother Nature is a supporter of the children of Village School, having stopped the rain just in time to allow the kids to enjoy this event! The PSA is thankful to Village School PSA member Suzanne Serini and her Trunk or Treat committee who put this event together for the first time, as it was a resounding success due to their hard work and effort.

Heart Healthy HOLIDAY TIPS
The most wonderful time of the year is upon us and we all know what that means; five weeks of family, festivities and FOOD! But, while holiday traditions can make it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle, they don’t have to throw your progress completely off track.
BY JULIANNE DODS, VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS
“S
ocial and family obligations during the holidays place a great deal of emphasis on ‘feasting’ which means serious temptations to the novice or even expert health enthusiast,” says Kerri Miano Group Fitness Instructor at Meridian Fitness & Wellness in Hazlet. “That’s why our team of health and wellness experts put together these quick tips to guiltlessly enjoy the holiday season.” Plan, schedule and follow through. From office parties to family gatherings, the holidays are action packed. “Draft a schedule that accommodates holiday commitments while also allowing you to complete normal activities such as meal planning and exercise,” says Erin Walsh, Meridian Fitness & Wellness Personal Training Director. While you may not have an hour a day to devote to a workout session, some exercise is better than none as our bodies respond to the challenge of exercise, not the amount of time we spend doing it. “High Intensity Interval Training is a great way to optimize your workouts during the holidays,” says Walsh. “Completed in only 20-30 minutes a day, HIIT utilizes repeated bouts of short duration, high intensity exercise intervals quickly followed by longer duration, lower intensity rounds of active recovery to maximize caloric expenditure.” The physiological benefits for this type of training include increased Resting Metabolic Rate, which means you burn more calories even when you aren’t working out; perfect for the holiday season!
Nutritious and Delicious. Rest assured most holiday gatherings you attend this season will be centered on one thing: food. “Spacing meals throughout the day and planning low calorie snacks will help to curtail junk food temptations and the desire to overindulge during the holiday season,” says Miano. If you are attending a party, be sure to grab a quick, nutritious snack on the way or bring one with you to share. If you are throwing the party, prepare hearty and healthy foods full of locally grown produce and lean meats that are chock full of protein, fiber, Vitamin C and beta carotene. But, food is not the only culprit to calorie overload. While current dietary guidelines recommend a maximum of one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, alcohol tends to comprise plenty of empty calories consumed throughout the holiday season. “Be careful with your beverages,” says Miano. “The average glass of wine or beer has between 100-150 calories each.” While that may not seem like much, alcohol decreases inhibitions which induce over-eating and over-drinking. A tricky combination when you are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So, while you may be busy and, sure, it’s cold outside, Meridian Fitness & Wellness challenges you to make your health a priority this holiday season. Acknowledge that your normal fitness routine and eating habits will be affected. Make a plan and follow through. From our family to yours, we wish you a happy, healthy holiday season! Visit us online at www.MeridianFitnessandWellness.com or call 732.335.4200 today!

WALL STREET BY DAY, LITTLE LEAGUE PRESIDENT BY NIGHT History Made with Lincroft Little League’s First Female President Deborah O’Connor
L
incroft Little League was founded in 1960 and 54 years later Deborah O’Connor was chosen as the first female President of its Board of Directors. Mrs. O’Connor, who was raised in the Locust section of Middletown, moved to Lincroft with her husband in 1997. “We always have MLB on at home when the Yankees play, but I can’t say that I’ve ever watched an entire game! When my son took an interest, he started at Lincroft Little League (LLL) playing in the Junior division, so my involvement with the league and baseball was really more about him than my love of the sport. I support him in any athletic endeavor and do what I can to help him succeed – that’s what we want for all the kids that play at LLL, hence my involvement on the board.” In 2012-2013, Mrs. O’Connor was Board Secretary for LLL. She explained how that changed to her new role of President. “The role of Secretary provided me with an opportunity to work very closely with the President, which enabled me to work up the learning curve very quickly. The business skills I’ve acquired from my “day job” enabled to keep a finger on the pulse of all of the league initiatives. Last year’s President, Don O’Rourke, has been a tremendous mentor as well, so it seemed like a natural fit for me to take over the reins this year.” As far as the transition from Secretary to President for the Board, Mrs. O’Connor said, “I believe it was a relatively smooth transition, in that I had been so heavily involved in the league activities, everyone knows who I am or has heard of me. In my prior role I was able to prove my abilities, which
28
helped the transition.” Mrs. O’Connor has been at her “day job” on Wall Street in New York City for 16 years. “I’ve worked my way through a number of positions, however, currently I am a Business Analyst and provide Executive Reporting to the company’s Executive Committee. I also run a Private Investigations business with my husband – we received our license in August 2013, and have to say that it’s been a great “Plan B” for my husband now that he is retired.” The LLL Board has been extremely productive this fall, said Mrs. O’Connor. She shared some of the ideas and noted that a number of initiatives are already in motion. With respect to Recreational vs. Travel sports, “Much of the feedback I have received from parents with children that don’t play travel sports, is how intimidated they feel on recreation teams with travel players, and have heard a few stories of kids dropping out because of it. This year I’d like to encourage these players by setting up a type of “open practice” which could provide coaching and training by “professionals” – high school/college players and trainers providing mini-clinics at night through the week.” With fundraising, “We are looking into a number of new activities and have put together a committee to help facilitate them. We are also taking advantage of a District initiative, and have invited the representative to our board meeting in November.” And with income and expenses, “We have a new treasurer this year who has started a complete analysis of what’s coming in and out, so that we can provide more thorough accounting on the financials for the league. Every $1 counts
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
towards a repair or new project, so we are taking that to a new level this year.” Most of the Executive Committee positions on the Board are year round. She said that at end of the spring season there are a few quiet weeks before the fall season starts for the LYAA teams. Currently, she noted, the entire board is meeting to plan for the spring. The term for Board President is two years. “In the past we have had Presidents stay in the position longer. I know a number of board members that would do very well in this position, so I’d be happy to step down when my term is up.” When asked what major accomplishment she would want to happen during her term as Board President, Mrs. O’Connor replied, “I would love to see our registration numbers increase with players that dropped out or had minimal interest because they felt intimidated or didn’t have the confidence in their abilities to play the sport. If we can get just one player to think differently about him/ herself, than we have won as a board.”

BRIDGES AT THE SHORE COLLECTING TOYS FOR THOSE IN NEED The BRIDGES at the Shore is a community program that provides direct help every month to those in need. Volunteers distribute clothing, blankets, bag suppers and toiletries in Keansburg, Red Bank, and Freehold. Meeting face-to-face with families in these areas, volunteers are able to offer help and give encouragement. Holiday time is especially difficult for these families. BRIDGES Director Kathy Logan is now collecting items for Christmas for distribution to the children of these families. Unwrapped gifts for toddlers through teens are
being accepted. Aside from the usual toys, other suggestions include crayons, coloring books, reading books, and gift cards. Anyone wishing to donate can put the items in a plastic bag marked BRIDGES and leave it in the unlocked shed behind the Holmdel Community Church at 40 Main Street, Route 520, in Holmdel. If you would like the items picked up, please contact Kathy Logan at 732.706.9467. All donations for the Christmas holiday must be received no later than December 6, 2014. Holmdel resident Nicholas DiBlasi stands beside film director Steven Spielberg during a break in filming a scene in the upcoming film, “St. James Place.”
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
HOLMDEL STUDENT AUDITIONS FOR UPCOMING FILM DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERG
O
n September 15th and 18th of this year, ten-yearold Nicholas DiBlasi of Holmdel traveled to Astoria, Queens to film scenes for the possible inclusion in an upcoming film, “St. James Place” being directed by Steven Spielberg, one of the most influential film personalities in the history of film. Tom Hanks and Alan Alada are just two of the stars in the movie which takes place in the late 1950s and 1960s. The film is based on the 1960 U-2 incident in which a lawyer is thrust into the center of the Cold War when he must negotiate the release of a pilot whose plane was shot down in the Soviet Union. Nicholas filmed scenes set in the 1950s in which he plays the classmate of one of the main characters. The film is due for release in October, 2015. Nicholas, a fifth grader at Indian Hill School, enjoys playing sports, singing and playing bass guitar in the school band. He has been acting, singing and modeling for five years and has enjoyed the success of being in a 2012 Hess Christmas commercial, auditioning for a scene in the 2013 Michael J. Fox television premier episode, and having his picture displayed on the EDU Science Microscope toy box sold at Toys "R" Us. When asked if he does anything specific in order to coordinate school, sports, and friends, Nicholas answered, “No, I don’t do anything special to fit all these activities in. I just feel lucky that I get to do everything I enjoy. I actually play basketball, baseball and sing too! It’s not like I film stuff every day. I only participate in projects that don’t interfere with school too much.” Vicki DiBlasi, Nicholas’ mother commented on her son’s

busy schedule. “Nicholas really does participate in a lot. He enjoys his school and sports functions. And as long as he maintains his grades, then he is able to pursue acting. As soon as it becomes too much, then we would keep it to only summer work. He is so well-rounded and just a typical tenyear-old. We really don’t film that much, he has just been afforded a couple of really cool opportunities.” Nicholas enjoys everything to do with acting. He explained, “It is so much fun acting and it is really amazing meeting all the actors. Some are famous and some aren’t as well-known but it is still just as cool. Working at different locations with different sets in different places is really cool too, and it is awesome how well the sets describe the movie scenes. I just love acting so much. It is great working on films, meeting new people and seeing different types of sets. I can’t wait to get a speaking part one day.” Nicholas found it fascinating to be a part of the Spielberg film and shared why. “It was a fabulous experience to be in this 1950s movie. It was pretty cool to see all of the old cars and to be in a classroom that looked so much different from what it is today. One of my favorite scenes was when we were filming under a bridge on a waterfront, kind of like a boardwalk. It was a park scene so I was playing and running in the scene, and then I saw an old ice cream truck. All of these scenes were very unique and different and cool because it was before this time, when there were no cell phones or Apple electronics. Kids were actually playing outside all day and it was simple.” Mrs. DiBlasi said her son especially loved working on this period piece

because the clothing was so different. She added, “He follows direction very well and stays focused and loves experiencing new things. One of his favorite parts of working on films is getting to eat all day long, as there is never a shortage of candy, cakes and cookies readily available.” As for Steven Spielberg, Mrs. DiBlasi said he set an excellent example for her son and the others on the set. “He treated all of the children in the scenes with respect and as he shook their hands, he thanked each of them for being a part of the film. He let them all know how important their parts were and he took the time to take pictures with them. He was very approachable and kind to everyone.” Nicholas was thrilled to meet the director. “It was an honor to shake hands with Steven Spielberg. He is my favorite director and I love all of his old and new movies. I even read a book about his life. It was great to take a picture with him as well. He was so cool to meet.” Mrs. DiBlasi said that it is an early start on the days Nicholas has to film, so she is leaving the decision to continue acting up to her son. “As long as Nicholas keeps waking up with a smile at 4:30 a.m. and looking forward to his day, we will continue to pursue this. Whenever we are done with a project I always ask him, ‘Buddy, are you still having fun?’ and as long as the answer is yes we will keep at it.”

Ward commended everyone who worked together for the Holmdel Harvest Fest. “It was a great community event. It took the cooperation of a lot of different departments to make this successful. Thanks to all of the departments for their help.” He added that the DPW worked before, during, and after the event to set up, maintain and clean up. And that the help of the police and fire departments, who helped handle different aspects of the event was greatly appreciated. This was truly a community event.

It’s Still a “Shore” Thing All About Former News 12 Anchor Janine Strafaci’s Newest Business Endeavor STORY MICHELLE TUCHOL
She wants you to know that she’s a Jersey Girl—born and raised. A two-time Emmy award winning journalist, Janine Strafaci has spent over 20 years perfecting her craft as a broadcast journalist, speaker, and writer.
A
s a life-long New Jersey resident, Janine has a help me help you attitude, noting that during her 16 ½ year span as a main news anchor for News 12 New Jersey, there were countless feature stories that had to get passed up simply because there were too many. “I would get hundreds of emails a week from people wanting their stories to be told,” she recalls. “Out of those hundreds of emails, only a few we could actually cover,” said Strafaci.
It seemed like a difficult position for Janine to be in: people from around the state reached out to her to cover their features—some very note-worthy—but the reality was hard news always came first. Regardless of the stories she could and could not cover, Janine always loved it. From her years as a college student at Boston University, reporting was a huge part of life. It included numerous summer internships; writing

for the Ocean County Observer; acquiring a radio news spot on WOBM-FM; transitioning to a local cable anchor position at then-Adelphia Channel 8; and eventually landing the full-time job at News 12 that would not only give her an opportunity to bring folks the news every day, but also challenge her in a way that many viewers might not see or initially think about. She produced and reported on an award-winning weeklong series documenting the lives of a group of emergency workers from NorthSTAR, New Jersey’s air medical trauma team. Janine witnessed some of the most gruesome accidents; the team was responsible for recovering and transporting patients to the nearest trauma unit. During the month spent working on the news series, Janine and her photographer developed a relationship with the group, as they traveled in close quarters with the pilot, nurse, and paramedic in a helicopter.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s something I so wholeheartedly believe in, and it’s my own.”
In March 2014, Janine Strafaci, who is a two-time Emmy award winning journalist, was invited back to the awards to be a presenter.
Janine Strafaci spent nearly 17 years at News 12 anchoring the news in New Jersey.
“I spent 13 hours straight on the anchor desk on 9/11,” Janine says about working with News 12 during another memorable experience. “We kept the phone lines open, we had people calling in telling their stories, trying to get in touch with their family members.”

O
n October 19 at Red Bank Regional High School, the Oak Hill Academy Student Council and their families and friends came out to support the Red Bank CROP Walk. This was the 34th year of the Red Bank CROP Walk. CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) was created by Church World Services in an effort to end hunger throughout the world. The Red Bank CROP Hunger Walk is a 5-mile Walk/Run to help raise funds to fight hunger in Monmouth County as well as around the world. It is a cause that the Oak Hill Academy community has been supporting for the past 26 years.

The Oak Hill Academy Student Council Executive Board and Project Coordinators led by their Student Council Advisors, Mrs. Linda Vacca and Mr. Matt Goldfarb, have been working in conjunction with Janie Schlidge, the CROP walk coordinator, to get the word out. On Wednesday, October 8, Mrs. Vacca’s group put on a school wide assembly to promote the event and get the OHA community excited to help this great cause. Oak Hill Student Council President, Kaila Domanski (Colts Neck), and Project Coordinator, Zach Basile (Middletown) were the anchors of the CWN (Church World Network) and hosted an informational “show” about how the Church World Service through the C.R.O.P. Walk help people all over the world. Other student council members made posters and acted as field correspondents. Seventh grader, Aron Wiener performed on piano to an accompanying PowerPoint presentation. Mrs. Schlidge and Oak Hill Alum, Mr. Bill Gleason (’02), spoke about the walk and thanked the Oak Hill Student Council and students for their support. Those that were unable to join Oak Hill Academy at the Red Bank CROP walk were still able to help join the fight against hunger by sponsoring a walker or donating rice; beans or peanut butter. In 1994, Jim established TEAM LIFE, INC., a training and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) sales company in Colts Neck. With additional locations now in Middlesex and Cherry Hill, TEAM LIFE proudly commences its 20th year in business. To commemorate this event, TEAM LIFE invites its customers and the community for an afternoon of hors d’oeuvres, raffles and giveaways on Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at their Colts Neck office, located

With the new laws in New Jersey requiring AEDs in schools and requiring students to be trained in CPR, the need for Jim’s services is in high demand. TEAM LIFE offers options for training and getting your facility compliant with these laws. To date, TEAM LIFE has already worked with schools statewide, as well as local and national businesses to create the best possible environment should an individual experience cardiac arrest. Statistically, the average response time for first responders once 911 is called is 8 to 12 minutes. For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival is reduced approximately 10% (American Heart Association). Having an AED onsite is the best way to increase survival. If you are interested in learning how to become CPR certified or to help your business become heart safe, contact Jim at jim@teamlife.com to set up an appointment.

Drs. Mitchel Friedman and Julia Cintron of Newman Springs Dental Care in Lincroft believe that having a whiter smile can do more than make you feel more confident; it can help sick and disadvantaged children get needed health care. Mrs. Shirley Parker accepted the check from Dr. Mitchel Friedman at the dental clinic in the Parker Family Health Center in Red Bank. Dr. Friedman is also a dentist volunteer at the health center. Dr. Friedman, his staff and patients together raised $4,166 by whitening the donor’s smiles. The donation was shared equally between St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Parker Family Health Center. SmilesForLife.org is a charity organization that raises funds for the benefit of children. The Crown Council is pleased to announce another incredible campaign for the Smiles for Life Foundation, which raised $1.5 million for underprivileged children this year. The Smiles for Life Campaign, made possible by Ultradent and Crown Council dentists, is dedicated to children in need in North America. HARVEST HOME FESTIVAL AT HISTORIC LONGSTREET FARM
H
arvest Home Festival held at Longstreet Farm on September 28, 2014 was reminiscent of an 1890s old-fashioned country fair. The living historical farm, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offered a peek back in time to when neighbors worked together to harvest, make apple cider, or just have fun. Families enjoyed demonstrations by a blacksmith and woodworker, as well as watching a plowing
demonstration. Wagon rides, old-fashioned games for the children, a corn husking competition, pie-eating contests, and musical entertainment were all a part of this event. Displays of beautiful needlework, as well as competitions for baked goods and home-grown vegetables offered a chance to win a prize ribbon. A fun opportunity for a prize was guessing the weight of a gigantic pumpkin. This event was definitely familyfriendly and kid-approved!

DIVORCE TALK
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.
DID THEY REALLY DO THAT?
C
riminal lawyers deal with some of the worst people on their best behavior. Family lawyers deal with some of the best people on their worst behavior. The stresses and strains of divorce often contribute to some very bizarre, but unproductive, behavior.
Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. For more information please see the firm’s website at www. par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.
In the mid-1970s, shortly after New Jersey enacted its equitable distribution law, a man in Middlesex County decided that if the judge was going to divide the marital assets, he’d help him. He got his extension ladder and his chain saw, climbed onto the roof, and literally cut the house in half – through the entire roof and down both sides of the house. The judge ordered him to pay to repair the $60,000.00 in structural damage he caused. He did, however, receive fifteen minutes of
fame – Esquire Magazine conferred one of its Dubious Achievement Awards on him and his “achievement” was prominently noted in the magazine’s year-end issue. A South Jersey couple, who lived on a lagoon, got divorced after having two children together. A few years later, in an unfortunate miscalculation, they remarried each other and had two more children. Then things got really bad. After an argument, the wife unplugged the bildge pump that was keeping the husband’s boat afloat. Two days later, the boat was at the bottom of the lagoon. Not to be outdone for sheer lunacy, the husband stole the ten year old daughter’s eyeglasses during his next visit and wouldn’t give them back. Why he thought hurting his daughter constituted revenge on his wife is continued on next page >>

open to speculation. The wife got the last pungent word in this dispute, however. She unplugged the freezer that contained the husband’s fishing chum (bait, not his fishing buddy). We can only imagine what happened next. A North Jersey man returned home several hours after an argument with his wife over the telephone about infidelity. When he opened his closet he found the left sleeve of every garment he owned laying on the floor. Nearby was his wife’s scissor. A prodigious party guy returned home in a stupor from a night of carousing at about 3:00 a.m. Since he had lost his keys, he rang the doorbell, waking his very perturbed wife. When she opened the door, there he was standing on the front porch, wearing only his belt, his shoes and a dopey grin. These are extreme examples of bad behavior. Maintain your dignity. No one can take it away from you, but you can give it away. It is impossible to take emotion completely out of divorce, but it’s worth the effort to keep your behavior from reaching these depths. It’s important to you, your children and your sanity.

If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

Stuffing . . .
Heat 1 oz oil in large sauce pan, big enough to fit all chops in. Add onions, garlic, pepper, and celery. Season with salt and pepper. Saute 2-3 min. until soft. Add Craisins, Raisins, Apricots, diced apples and 1/8 t. cinnamon. Cook until apples become soft, remove from heat and add 1 oz. Apple Jack Brandy. Place back on heat, reduce till almost dry. Add cubed bread and 1 teaspoon Thyme, stir to combine everything. Stuffing will be a little dry. Remove stuffing from pan into a bowl. To stuff pork chop, make a slit in the middle of the side of the chop 1 inch wide. Insert small knife and cut inside the chop to ¼ inch from the ends, to form a pocket. Place even amounts of stuffing inside each chop.
Chops . . .
Heat rest of oil to medium temp in the pan. In separate bowl mix flour with salt, pepper, and ½ t. cumin. Dredge each chop in flour mix, shaking off all excess flour. Place chops in pan making sure not to stick to pan. When chops are brown turn over, again making sure they do not stick to pan. Add sliced onion, stir to coat with oil and cook 2 minutes. Add apple slices, salt, pepper, rest of cinnamon and cumin and stir so everything is even in pan. Cook until apples become soft. Remove pan from heat and add 1 oz. Apple Jack Brandy. Stir, let reduce half way, add beef stock and bring to boil. Reduce heat to simmer. Cook 7 minutes, turn chops over and cook another 7 min. Remove chops from pan, stir sauce, adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Spoon sauce over chops.
SHARE THE JOY OF THE SEASON
and Create Happy Holiday for Less Fortunate Children
Catherine “Catrina” Erkal... Always Going the Extra Mile Your Resident Beau Ridge Specialist J
Each holiday season Lunch Break, Monmouth County’s first soup kitchen and pantry, and so much more, experiences a transformation and becomes Santa’s Workshop by undertaking a huge holiday operation to provide gifts for hundreds of the neediest children from both Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Through their Adopt-A-Family program, new and age-appropriate gifts are distributed to kids—from newborn to 15 years of age. All of this is possible because of the generosity and kindness of Lunch Break’s good friends and neighbors who, in 2013, brought smiles to the faces of over 1,500 children, and the hope this year is that the wishes of even more children can be fulfilled. Beginning now, you can visit Lunch Break to select your family to adopt. Sponsors will find each child’s wish list of three gifts or, especially in the case of the older children, gift cards for a variety of retailers, movie theaters, and restaurants. Sponsors can shop for the gifts and bring them unwrapped to Lunch Break to be given to the family or provide Lunch Break elves with the funds to purchase the gifts on your behalf. And, to be sure, you don’t have to adopt a whole family. Lunch Break gladly accepts donated gifts or gift cards (pre-teens and teens love those gift cards), not attached to any particular child or family; these gifts will be used to fill or complete holiday bags for the children. If you are shopping for your adopted family(s), the unwrapped gifts must be returned to Lunch Break by Friday, December 5, 2014, at their Tinton Falls warehouse. (Turn down the access road just off Shrewsbury Avenue, next to the Armed Services recruiting center, behind the WOW gym, and continue to the end of that road.) Drop off times are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Saturday, December 13, the parents and guardians will gather at Tower Hill Church and those happy Lunch Break elves will distribute the gifts donated by all the kind and generous Secret Santas who have participated in this year’s efforts to make happy holiday memories for the children of Lunch Break. The holiday season seems a long way off, but it will be here sooner than you think. Lunch Break is asking their friends and supporters to share the joy of the season again this year through their Adopt-A-Family program, or by donating gifts and/or gift cards. If you want to participate or have any questions, please contact Sharda Jetwani, Program Director, at 732.784.7360 or online at sjetwani@lunchbreak.org. Lincroft Presbyterian Church Offers Free Seminars on Financial Planning
Investing 101 and IRAs , Social Security Planning, and Preparing a Tax Return
D
oes looking at your financial statements feel like a giant alphabet soup brimming with gobbleygook? Do you feel stressed determining what selections to make in your 401k options? Do you want to file your own tax return but not confident you’ll do it correctly?
Lincroft Presbyterian Church is offering a three-part free series of seminars designed to demystify investing, taxes and more on Thursday, November 13, 2014; Thursday, December 11, 2014; and Thursday, January 15, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the church, located at 270 Everett Road in Lincroft (at the corner of West Front Street and Everett Road). Light refreshments will be served. Kindly please RSVP through the church office at 732.741.8921. Doug Irwin will be hosting financial planning seminars at the Lincroft Presbyterian Church in November, December and January.
“After the series we hosted for church members and friends, we heard that people throughout our community would appreciate sessions to help them sift through all the information in a casual atmosphere that didn’t try to sell a particular company or service,” notes Doug Irwin, a member of Lincroft Presbyterian Church and retired CPA, who created the seminars and shares his 40+ years of accounting experience.
Each session will include specific topics that cover IRAs and Investing basics, calculating Social Security benefits including spousal and survivor benefits, and how to file your own tax return with computer software: Thursday, November 13, 2014 MANAGING YOUR IRA and INVESTING 101 will cover basic investing for the individual. Most individuals have an Individual Retirement Account and will one day have to manage their 401k monies. n September 26, 2014, while most of Monmouth County’s residents slept in their beds, more than 100 people slept in Cardboard Box City on the grounds of Monmouth Church of Christ in Tinton Falls. Forty Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) students participated in this night of solidarity for the homeless, which raised more than $14,000 for Family Promise of Monmouth County – the only non-profit organization specifically helping shelter homeless families. The night, which began at 5:00 p.m. with set up, a soup and bread line for dinner, featured guest speakers, live music, kids activities, and concluded with breakfast the following morning at 6:00 a.m. Family Promise of Monmouth County awarded prizes to Holmdel United Church of Christ for the organization that displayed the most creative dwelling and to CBA for the group that raised the most funds. CBA Senior Connor Foor of Manchester participated in the event as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. He recalled, “No other community service opportunity in my time at CBA has provided such an incredible experience so close to home. This event really causes the participants to take a step back, and to realize the true fortunes we individually possess.”

Family & Children’s Service Seeking Donations for Operation Sleighbells
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
W
ith the holidays fast approaching, Family & Children’s Service (FCS), Monmouth County’s oldest nonprofit social service agency, is asking help granting the holiday wishes of area children whose families are struggling financially and might not otherwise afford a holiday. The agency is seeking donations of toys, books and clothes, as well as volunteers to help with its annual holiday giving drive, Operation Sleighbells, which this year expects to assist more than 500 area families.
“The holidays are a stressful time for a lot of families,” says Samantha White, FCS Manager of Volunteer Services. “Many are struggling to make ends meet and simply don’t have the resources to provide the extras. We want to alleviate some of that stress. Simple things, such as a grocery store card for a family meal, or a gift for a small child, can go a long way toward making the holidays a special time for everyone, especially children.” Operation Sleighbells is different than other holiday drives in that it addresses the specific wishes of every child. Participating families are interviewed by staff and asked to provide the ages, sizes and needs of each child. Donors are then asked to fulfill the requests. The thousands of donated items are then collected, sorted and distributed off site in a space generously donated each year by Monmouth Medical Center (MMC). If you are interested in helping with Operation Sleighbells this year, there are several ways to participate: 1. Adopt a Family - Provide toys, gifts, coats and even a supermarket gift card enabling an entire family to have a “holiday of a lifetime.” 2. Host a collection drive at your work, school, or organization. FCS will provide tags listing the first name of a participating child with his or her age, size and holiday wishes. Employees or group members can then select a tag and buy a gift for that particular child. 3. Donate gifts - FCS gladly accepts new, unwrapped toys and clothes and will sort and distribute them based on the needs of those registered for the program. (A complete list of suggested items can be found on the agency’s website www. fcsmonmouth.org ) 4. Donate money to purchase gift cards for older teens – Donations can be made online at or mailed to the agency. 5. Volunteer – Volunteer to help sort and pack gifts in December. In addition, FCS will be conducting a holiday coat drive. Donations of coats in good condition of all sizes for men, women and children are appreciated. The coats will be available to families to select from when they come to pick up their gifts. Donations can be dropped off from Thursday, December 4, 2014 through Friday, December 12, 2014 at Operation Sleighbells headquarters at 295 Third Avenue in Long Branch. All donations must be received by Friday, December 12, 2014 to ensure delivery. For more information about Operation Sleighbells and how you can help, visit the FCS website at http://fcsmonmouth.org/our-services/operation-sleighbells/ or contact the agency at 732.222.9111.
Colts Neck’s Troop 290 Enjoys Fall Camping in Local Park
Colts Neck Trop 290 volunteered at the “Open Pace Race” at Freehold Raceway for a service project.
Colts Neck Troop 290 went camping in their backyard the local natural reserve in Colts Neck! This large reserve is surrounded by thick forest, with no running water or electricity – a true camping experience, not too far from home. The scouts found setting up camp and tents rather easy since the park has a flat mild terrain and the soft grass makes it comfortable for sleeping. The weather remained good, since it only rained one night after scouts were comfortably asleep in their tents. Webelos Cub Scouts from Pack 90 also joined the camping trip to experience camping with the older boy scouts. The scouts also did a service project for “Open Space Pace” at Freehold Raceway and assisted the town with the horse parade. The volunteer service was to make sure the horses were safe from traffic by blocking the roads while the parade was taking place. The horses were a sight to see, as some were dressed up during the parade. The scouts also learned that Colts Neck does a lot to help set up events to benefit everyone. Overall, the camping trip was a wonderful and true camping experience for Troop 290 with a service project to help the community and mentoring younger scouts in camping. The Troop has more exciting trips planned for coming months, such as camping at Zombie Camporee at Quail Hill, NJ, Navy Camporee & Football in Maryland, day trip to Philadelphia to see Liberty Bell, and the Winterburg ski trip. Boy Scouts is for boys 11-17 years old. You can join at any time. Please send an email to Join@Troop290.com and the troop will respond back. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, check out their website, www.Pack90NJ.com, or send an email to Join@pack90nj.com. For information on venture Crew 290, for young men and women from ninth grade through age 20, please contact Vicki Sherman at 732.308.9820 or Sherman_05@yahoo.com.

METLIFE DONATES TO UNION BEACH THROUGH OPERATION PROVIDE COMFORT ing contributions to their communities through volunteerism and a $2,500 donation is made. Engel, a life member of the Colts Neck First Aid Squad, received the award from MetLife five times totaling $12,500, which was contributed to the Colts Neck First Aid Squad.
Left to right: Colts Neck Committeeman Jarrett Engel holds the check recently presented to Union Beach Administrator Jennifer Maier from MetLife for use in their rebuilding effort.
Colts Neck resident Jarrett Engel, former Mayor and current Township Committeeman, is a Director with MetLife and is responsible for strategic operations of 13 firms over multiple states. Engel recently brought his managers to MetLife Stadium for a business planning meeting focused on the past two years of successful growth following a large reorganization project. Also two years ago, during his company’s reorganization and during his time as Mayor, Hurricane Sandy hit Colts Neck and the Jersey Shore with full force. Engel recalled, “As we were rebuilding at MetLife, so were many of the Shore towns in New Jersey following Sandy, including Union Beach.” Engel partnered with Lt. Col. Jim Sfayer two years ago to launch Operation Provide Comfort, an organization whose purpose is to help collect and coordinate donations of money, physical goods, and services to aid in the rebuilding effort. Their website is www.opcunionbeach.org. As Engel was planning for his MetLife meeting, he recalled receiving the MetLife Volunteer Service award for his volunteer work with the Colts Neck First Aid Squad. These awards recognize MetLife Associates nationwide who have made outstand-
Engel approached MetLife about his work done with Operation Provide Comfort and MetLife awarded Union Beach with a $2,500 check towards their continued rebuilding. Engel thought it would be great to award this check at MetLife Stadium, during his business meeting, to Union Beach Administrator Jennifer Maier, Lt. Col. Jim Sfayer from Operation Provide Comfort, and some Union Beach residents. At the check presentation, MetLife associates had the opportunity to hear the incredible story of struggle, rebirth, growth, and the continuing challenges of Union Beach. Following the presentation, Engel arranged for everyone to share in a cake made by the Cake Boss, which had the actual Union Beach sign and a 12-inch construction crane made out of modeling chocolate. Engel saved this in a display box to give to Union Beach for their town hall. The message Engel wants to get out to all communities is that everyone should inquire if the corporation they work for has similar program such as the MetLife Foundation. “Some corporations have a Gift of Life or Matching Donation program. We can all come up with creative ways to help others through programs within our corporations. I am fortunate to work for such a great company as MetLife that works with their associates to create a culture of volunteerism.” He added, “The check presentation was somewhat celebratory in nature as it is still an ongoing battle for Union Beach residents, but things are also moving forward. Significant changes are being made. I couldn’t have done this without MetLife. Operation Provide Comfort has made a long term commitment to continue helping Union Beach with its rebuilding. Engel hopes other community members will reach out to their corporations and find a way to help those in need.

Red Bank Catholic High School Celebrates One of Their Own

“The lived life…” that phrase aptly describes the all too short life of Kelly Anne Gordon. Kelly, a 2010 graduate of Red Bank Catholic, is hard to capture in words. Her own words best describe her, “Be extraordinary at everything you do.” Kelly lived an extraordinary life and she was an extraordinary person. The Boston College student was slated to receive her diploma from the Carroll School of Business just one month after she was killed in a tragic accident in New York City on April 10, 2014. Kelly’s family and friends gathered to celebrate her at an event held on September 28, 2014 at the Manhattan Sailing Club. The event was organized by Kelly’s Red Bank Catholic classmate and friend, Kelley Ford, her stepsister, Ali Axt, and her friend, Samantha Berardo. It sold out quickly and the capacity crowd enjoyed spectacular weather, good food, special memories and the chance to win amazing auction
items. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Kelly Anne Gordon Memorial Fund at Red Bank Catholic which will fund an annual scholarship for an incoming freshman and “inspire grants” which will provide Red Bank Catholic teachers with funding to launch new programs, add innovations to their classrooms or study something that will impact their students. The funds will inspire the extraordinary - a fitting tribute to Kelly. Kelley Ford said that they hope to host the event annually. Anyone interested in supporting the Kelly Anne Gordon Memorial Fund at Red Bank Catholic can mail a check to the Red Bank Catholic Office of Advancement at 112 Broad Street, Red Bank NJ 07701. Checks should be made out to Red Bank Catholic. Please indicate on the donation that it is for Kelly’s Fund.

Holmdel First Aid Run for the Rig STORY KATHARINE FRIEDMAN
Holmdel First Aid Squad needs help to purchase a 4X4 ambulance, so they can get to Holmdel residents faster during the winter seasons in case of snowstorms, but the cost for an ambulance is $185,000. Kyle McCartney, a senior from Quinnipiac University, earning a three credit internship, wanted to help his community. His plan with the Holmdel First Aid Squad’s approval - a 5K run to raise funds necessary for the purchase. Residents from Holmdel came to support, run and spread the
word about the need for an ambulance on October 12, 2014. The event raised around 6,000 dollars, which will be used for a down payment on the ambulance. The First Aid Squad is one step closer to buying the ambulance thanks to Mr. McCartney. “It’s the first time I ever planned a major event; to bring together what I’ve learned in class has been a really great experience.” said McCartney.
