ON OCTOBER 17, 2015, Weichert, Realtors Holmdel held a Pet Adoption Day with the Monmouth County SPCA. Adults and children had the opportunity to interact and play with a variety of cats and dogs. Volunteers from the MCSPCA were on site to answer questions regarding any animal, the animals’ history or the adoption process. Although the MCSPCA sees this as an

outreach for people to adopt (and animals did get adopted), people also come and fill out information that eventually leads to an adoption. Free hot dogs and popcorn were given out by Weichert, Realtors Holmdel agents to everyone who came. Weichert, Realtors Holmdel office will be sponsoring another Pet Adoption Day in spring 2016.

Village School PSA hosts 2ND ANNUAL WELCOME BACK FALL FESTIVAL THE VILLAGE SCHOOL hosted its Second Annual Welcome Back Fall Festival at Village School in Holmdel in September. More than 600 children attended this family-friendly event, allowing parents to commiserate about the first few weeks of school while students participated in the biggest play date in Holmdel! Parent volunteers started out the morning by unloading over 600 pumpkins to create "Farmer Schillaci Pumpkin Patch,” and decorated the school grounds in the spirit of a fall festival. The PSA also hosted a Scarecrow Contest, in which students created their very own scarecrow to be displayed throughout the festival. The Klobuchar Family won the most creative prize with its “Bee” a Bucket Filler Scarecrow and the Lavell Family won the Most Original Scarecrow as well as the silliest. Students were treated to donuts and apples as snacks from Dearborn Farms. Mr. Schillaci and Mrs. Vierschilling participated in the Mummy Wrapping event, where the children wrapped them up as mummies to get ready for Halloween. The festival committee chairperson Laura Lavell stated, “The Committee was thrilled

with the response to the event. More than 600 children spent time with their friends and families enjoying events such as the pumpkin patch, bowling with pumpkins, obstacle courses, fall tattoos and face painting. They were also treated to a soccer activities offered by Holmdel FC, dancing to the music of the DJ, and learning about ‘The Science of the Apple.’ Seeing families’ creative scarecrows around the playground was fun for everyone. Thank you to Tom Critelli and Colts Neck Reformed Church Nursery School for your support this year. Special thanks to Jessica Bresnick, Julieann DeMatteo, Susan Gordon, SySy Sidholm, and Debbie Traynor for all of your hard work to make the Fall Festival a successful event for Village School families.” Vicky Flynn, President of the Village School PSA, added, “The success of this event is directly attributable to the extraordinary volunteerism that is alive and well in Village School. The work for this event begins early in the summer. The PSA is also thankful for the generous donations made by people in the community which helped to defray the cost of this event.”

Air Trampoline Sports NJ hosting Thanksgiving Food Drive BRING NON-PERISHABLES AND RECEIVE $2 OFF JUMP PASS

AIR TRAMPOLINE SPORTS NJ , an indoor

trampoline park in Aberdeen is hosting a Thanksgiving Food Drive from now until November 19th. The trampoline park is pledging donations to the Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry, which will distribute the food items along with turkeys for Thanksgiving. The Keyport Food Pantry is taking Thanksgiving donations until November 20th. Ken Stone, owner of Air Trampoline Sports, is encouraging food donations. Each person who donates any food

item(s) will receive $2 off one jump admission. “In New Jersey alone, one in eight people face hunger,” remarked Stone. “Chances are your child goes to school with kids who face hunger daily. There are families that struggle to get enough food to eat. Their kids are malnourished. We want to do what we can to end this problem, starting with our own community. Thanksgiving is a time to be appreciative, but it’s so easy to take a hot meal shared with family for granted. There are folks among us who can’t enjoy Thanksgiving the way most of us are lucky to. Keep them in mind when you sit to eat. We’re about promoting the health of the community, and we’ll take every opportunity we can to do so.” Air Trampoline Sports and the Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry are graciously accepting contributions of stuffing, instant potatoes, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables (assorted – i.e. corn, etc.), canned yams (sweet potato),

muffin mix and canned fruit (assorted). The Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry (KMFP) Inc. was founded in 1983 to provide food to needy families in the Northern Bayshore Area of Monmouth County. The founder of the pantry, O.O. John Reed, saw a need within the communities and started providing the services to a small group of families. By 1992 the number had grown to twenty families and today the pantry provides food, clothing and other items to over 180 families a month. Due to the increase in the number of clients, the pantry saw a need to construct a building in which it could better serve the families that come for assistance. A new building fundraiser was initiated in 2005, which, along with the Community Block Grant and a lease with the Community Church of Keyport, allowed the pantry to officially open its new doors at 42 Elizabeth Street on January 2015.

A GROWING NUMBER OF WOMEN TODAY are choosing to be cancer “previvors,” which are individuals who are survivors of a predisposition to cancer but who haven’t had the disease. This group includes people who carry a hereditary mutation, a family history of cancer, or some other predisposing factor. For women who tested positive for the BRCA gene, there is a great deal to consider and those who choose to have a mastectomy most often decide upon breast reconstruction. That’s where Asaad H. Samra, MD, FACS, a Board Certified Surgeon at Samra Plastic Surgery in Holmdel as well as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Bayshore Community Hospital, comes in. He performed breast reconstruction surgery on Erin Hardifer, as well as her mother Kathleen Hannon. Their stories that follow, explain the incredible journey both mother and daughter have taken toward being cancer-free. Kathleen Hannon is 56 years old and was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999 at the age of 39. “I was in shock when my breast surgeon informed me that the lump was cancerous and needed to be removed. At this point in my family history, we had no breast cancer with my mother, aunts, or grandmothers. I was happily married and the mother of four beautiful children, ages 4 to 11, and I took pride in keeping myself in good physical shape and always eating healthy. I knew I had to fight this cancer and move forward for my family and myself.” Hannon continued to have yearly visits with her doctors. In 2006, she faced more difficult news – her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Stage 3. “At this time, my doctor wanted me to have the BRCA Comprehensive gene test. The results of the analysis came back BRCA2 positive. I met with my doctor and breast surgeon to discuss the outcome and they discussed the high risk of breast and ovarian cancer with the BRCA2 gene. I then made the decision to have a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I had the surgery in March of 2007. Then in 2008, Hannon’s gynecologist discussed the idea of removing her ovaries. Due to the fact that her mother had ovarian cancer and she had the BRCA2 gene, she thought it would be a good idea. Hannon had her ovaries removed in April of 2008. “When I tested positive for the BRCA2 gene, I was more concerned about the future of my children than myself.” In April, 2015, Hannon’s left breast implant ruptured. She

14

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

was in a lot of pain and the implant became distorted. “My daughter had used Dr. Asaad Samra for reconstruction after her mastectomies and I liked him a lot when I first met him. He presented all my options when dealing with radiated breast tissue, explained each procedure in full detail, and answered all my questions. He was very helpful in making my final decision and comforted me with his professional manner. Dr. Samra is an awesome surgeon with a wonderful bedside manner. I had some complications after the surgery; he met me in the emergency room late at night and spent many hours at the hospital making sure I was comfortable and under great care. I am very pleased with the final outcome of my reconstruction.” Hannon shared this about her recovery. “I feel surviving breast cancer and reconstructive surgery is a life long journey. For all the women who are fighting this dreaded disease, it is going to be a hard journey but in the end, you will be a survivor, capable of telling your own story. It is so important to stay positive, and the fight will go on – One Day at a Time!” Hannon’s daughter, Erin Hardifer started on her journey when she was 28 years old. “I am now 30 and coming to the end of this long road.” Her decision to get tested for the cancer gene was discussed with both her mother and her OBGYN. “We all thought it was a good idea to get tested since my mom was positive. I prepared myself that I was going to be positive. So by doing that, when I heard the results I was just hoping that if I was positive

I chose to be a ‘previvor’ because with all the new testing that is available I wanted to be proactive rather than reactive.

that my sister would be fortunate enough to be skipped over.” Hardifer’s decision to have a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery was a family decision. “While growing up, I saw the battle my mom had fighting for her life against cancer. Now that I have two young daughters, I didn’t want them to see me go through the same thing.”

NOV 5

NOV 22

In September, 2015 Hardifer had an oophorectomy which removed her ovaries and fallopian tubes. While researching surgeons recommended by her oncologist, Hardifer found Dr. Asaad Samra. “I went for my first consultation and after meeting him I knew he was the surgeon for me. Dr. Asaad Samra answered all my questions and explained each step we were going to take and why. He really made my husband and I feel at ease and fully understand what he was going to be doing throughout the whole process.”

Ailey II

Dr. Asaad Samra agreed that more women are choosing these surgeries once they test positive for the cancer gene. “It is becoming increasingly more common to see women who are choosing to have a mastectomy with reconstruction once they’ve tested positive for the BRCA gene (or the breast cancer gene). In addition to that, I am seeing an increased incidence of women having bilateral (or both) mastectomies even when the breast opposite of the cancer doesn’t “have to” be removed. It appears as if that gives women more peace of mind to know that the breast tissue is gone.” He noted that Erin Hardifer and her mother Kathleen Hannon are the first mother and daughter patients needing reconstruction in his practice to make this choice, but said there are more. “I recently met a family where the mother and two daughters dealt with either breast cancer or had prophylactic (preventative) treatment based upon the presence of the gene." For further information about Dr. Asaad Samra and his work, find him on Facebook, visit www. samraplasticsurgery.com or call 732.739.2100. Samra Plastic Surgery is located at 733 North Beers Street, Suite U-1 in Holmdel, NJ and at 300 Perrine Road, #333 in Old Bridge, NJ.

Hardifer made a difficult decision, but one she feels was necessary. “I chose to be a ‘previvor’ because with all the new testing that is available I wanted to be proactive rather than reactive.” Moving forward in life following her surgeries, Hardifer expressed these feelings. “Anything that changes your life can be scary, but I could not be any happier with the choices I have made. I’ve never felt comfortable walking into a doctor’s office or a hospital until I met Dr. Asaad Samra. Knowing that he had my best interests in mind and knowing that he had my back always made me feel comfortable. Looking forward, I get to take family vacations and trips; I get to watch my two daughters grow up and I get to watch them walk down the aisle. Most importantly, I get to say that I am cancer free!”

L ocal Band Recognized for Musical C ontributions LEFT TO RIGHT: Iron Bridge Band is a New Jersey-based rock band whose members include Stephen Walsh, Lanie Suky, Chandler Mogel (close up in middle), Scott Suky, and Amy Harnell.

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

IRON BRIDGE BAND (IBB) was formed in 2010 and has been on the rise ever since. The band members are New Jersey-based musicians. Colts Neck residents Scott Suky, (drums) and his wife Lanie (bass guitar) are joined by Stephen Walsh of Freehold (acoustic and electric guitar as well as writing lyrics), and Chandler Mogel of Union City (vocals and writes lyrics/melody). They started playing at local, iconic clubs in New York City and New Jersey, and have opened for national touring acts. The band plays rock/roots rock music with a classic feel, and it has hints of southern rock, Americana and blues. Their first full length album, “Road Not Taken,” was released on September 27, 2013. It was continually in the Top 50 albums for a period spanning nearly 40 weeks, and finished in the top 100 of the Roots Music Report. One of their songs from the album, “All Our Yesterdays” finished at #20 for 2014. According to Lanie, this song will be used in a new pilot TV series, “Surviving Sam.” Another song from the album, “Smokin’ Gun,” is being used in an internet TV movie,

18

“Thanksgiving Proposal” that is due to air sometime this fall. Iron Bridge Band’s album “Road Not Taken” was placed on the Grammy ballot in 2014 for consideration for the Best Rock Album category. “It’s rare for independent artists with their own label and self-management to do this the first time around,” said Lanie. One other song, “Thunder in a Sacred Place” was used on a compilation CD that was included as part of the June/July 2015 issue of Relix, a music magazine, explained Lanie. The beginnings of Iron Bridge Band started long before 2010. Stephen and Scott both became interested in music at a very young age. They became good friends in high school and began playing at school events, practicing in Scott’s basement, and dreaming of recording their own music one day. They always focused on original material, and as a result of their lifelong experimentation and mutual inf luences, they formed an exceptional musical connection. After college, they lost track of one another, but thanks to social media they reconnected after 20 years. Lanie, who was Scott’s high school sweetheart, joined the band as the bass guitarist.

Chandler Mogel began writing for IBB for their first EP “Unbroken” which was released in November, 2011. “To ensure a better representation of our music in a live format, we have added Amy Harnell, who is a background vocalist and percussionist,” said Lanie. As for the music, she noted that the band works collaboratively to pull together the songs and arrangements after the initial idea or concept is passed around. Each of the band members have “day jobs” so they juggle their time between the band and their everyday lives. Scott, the promoter and marketing guru, is an EVP at an advertising agency; Stephen, the unofficial band manager and “gig getter,” is a Strategy Consultant in IT, Healthcare and Government; Chandler, the great showman, sings with an entertainment company for corporate events and weddings; and Lanie, the chief cook whenever they have meetings or practices, is a stay-at-home mom. If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

SUCCESSFUL A PPR A ISA L EV ENT IN COLTS NECK

UNE A RTHED VA LUA BLE FINDS Toting paintings, vases, sculptures, family heirlooms, nostalgic memorabilia, and more, eager participants in Colts Neck’s first “Treasure Hunt Appraisal Event” learned more than their items’ value on September 26, 2015. Presented by the Colts Neck Historic Preservation Committee, the event, held at Firehouse #1 on Route 537, saw a steady stream of guests who paid $20 for the appraisal of up to three items. Determining the value of the wide range of “treasures” were four New Jersey experts – Rudy Valentino of the Antiques Emporium in Asbury Park, Jeffrey Zimmerman of the Time & Again auction house in Linden, local resident and model railroad connoisseur Bob Gassaway of Roundhouse Train Conservators, LLC, and Michael Calvello of Tinton Falls, a sports memorabilia and collectibles expert with an online Ebay store. From computers set up at their tables, the appraisers scoured the planet to provide a wealth of often surprising information.

Paintings of all sizes and styles were the most prevalent items. One woman was surprised to learn it was her painting’s frame that was the treasure; worth $200! Handcrafted benches and other Americana crafts and collectibles proliferated, as did impressive sculptures, including a rare one from early 1930s China that was identified by an Historic Preservation Committee member familiar with them through her Chinese father-in-law.

One Middletown woman’s small black and white etching of Don Quixote was valued at $600, while an original Abraham Lincoln print belonging to a local woman was valued at over $5,000. Another couple brought an ornate three-foot tall Persian vase one appraiser offered to buy, but the owners decided they liked too much to part with it…for now. Several guests, excited over their new-found treasures, went home and returned with additional items for appraisal. Committee Chairperson Lillian Burry, a Monmouth County Freeholder and former Colts Neck Mayor, brought her hand-painted 19th century clock and a signed duck decoy. “The most valuable item I appraised was a small bicycle made in the 1920s or 30s by the Pines Winterfront Company, a U.S. manufacturer of auto parts and farm equipment, valued at $500,” said Gassaway, who is also an expert in vintage transportation toys. “The most interesting items were three cast iron model motorcycles, including a Harley Davidson in pristine condition worth $250 to $300.” Calvello said that while he saw many items of value and interest, some of his “clients” left disappointed when their sports autographs turned out not to be authentic. He explained that before sports celebrities’ signatures became valuable, it was common practice for

Zimmerman consigned an antique scale in a glass and wooden box for his auction house, while one of the guests purchased items from another! All the appraisers stated the day was a worthwhile venture and agreed to return for future Treasure Hunt Appraisal events conducted by the committee. Visitors also enjoyed an impressive display of Colts Neck memorabilia and educational materials which is part of Monmouth County’s annual Archives Day presentation. “We were pleased at how this first-time event was received by the public and will be assessing continuing it in the future,” Chairperson Burry said. “Our committee wants to thank everyone involved, including Fire Company #1 for their generous hospitality.”

Cultural Event Impresses Patrons THE COLTS NECK LIBRARY was transformed into beautiful art

galleries for two weekends in October. Guests of the 16th annual Fine Art Show & Sale commented they had no idea so many professional artists are from Colts Neck and were impressed with the variety and beauty of the art displayed. The artists submitted original paintings in oil, water color, acrylics, pastels, and ink. There were ceramics and wood carvings and an amazing array of photography, including portraits, landscapes, and abstracts. There were also some high quality reprints available. Most items were for sale and the artists generously donated 20% of their sales to the Colts Neck Friends of the Library, which sponsors the show. Proceeds will be used to fund library programs and improvements. Past shows were held in December. This year, the show made its debut in October due to the expectation of more reliable weather and a less hectic time of the year. The traditional opening night reception was again an opportunity to meet the artists and sample local wine and food. The show continued for two consecutive weekends and was enjoyed by many from the surrounding area. Local artists who participated were: Marilyn Baldi, Lin Fong O’Neill, Carl Johnson, Paul Lenz, Catherine Love, Julie McGowan, Cathleen Mumford, Dennis Murphy, Ellen O’Dwyer, Carol O’Scanlon, Eileen Petruch, Harvey Phillips, John Rodeck, Muriel Rogers, Carole Rustako, Tony Rustako, Richard Salls, Bonnie Smith, Duk Soon Fwhang, Laura VanCleaf, Arianna Vig, Mil Wexler Kobrinski, Anna Zetkulic, and Emily Zetkulic. The Friends of the Library members are grateful for the time and commitment of artists Eileen Petruch and Mil Wexler-Kobrinski, who co-chaired the show, as well as for the participating artists, community volunteers and librarian, Stephanie Laurino and her staff. Original art enhances the home, and the fact that it is created by local artists makes it even more special. If you would like to learn more about the Colts Neck Friends of the Library, please leave your name at the front desk of the Colts Neck library.

DEA R BOR N M A R K E T celebrates fall with

Apple Festival D

EARBORN MARKET kicked off the start of the fall season with its fourth

annual Apple Festival. Bushels full of freshly picked McIntosh, Red Delicious, Gala, Winesap, Cortland, Macoun and many others were readily available for purchase. The Apple Festival was also the beginning of the great family events held every weekend in October.

A walk through the outdoor festival area offered a chance to taste samples of store-made apple delicacies such as apples turnovers, apple cider donuts, apple pies, apple loaves, and of course hot and cold apple cider. These items were also available for purchase. Little ones had fun getting their faces painted while a DJ kept the music going each day. The festivities were topped off by a ride on the Hay Wagon that went around the pumpkin patch and back to the main festival area. Dearborn Market offers many family-friendly events throughout November and December. Visit the website at www.dearbornmarket.com for more information.

DI VORCE TA LK : BU Y ER’S R EMOR SE

PR OV I DE D BY P E T E R C . PA R A S , E S Q.

BUYER’S REMORSE is a term most often encountered in real estate law. Wikipedia defines buyer’s remorse as “…the sense of regret after having made a purchase. It is frequently associated with the purchase of any expensive item such as a car or a house… . Buyer’s remorse is thought to stem from cognitive dissonance, specifically post-decision dissonance, that arises when a person must make a difficult decision… .” In other words people tend to second guess themselves after making a difficult decision. This often occurs after a person going through a divorce settles his case. Did I make the right decision? Could I have made a better deal? Why did she/he agree (seemingly) so easily? Would she/he have given more? In this context, buyer’s remorse can be allconsuming – even paralyzing. There are, however, several important concepts to keep in mind. First, settlements are compromises. You have to give to get. In fact, your spouse is undoubtedly having second thoughts, too. No one gets everything, although we all think we are entitled to everything. Second, in the give and take of the negotiations, various trades are made as the process unfolds. At the end you have a package deal. Some aspects will be more to your liking. Others, your spouse will like more. You’ll both view some components as objectionable. However, it is the package (with

the good and the bad) that you must evaluate. You should decide, on balance, whether accepting the complete package is better than rejecting it and facing all the consequences that comes with that. Some of those consequences may be prolonged litigation, continued stress, increased litigation costs, a lack of finality, and the uncertainty of how a judge will decide your case if you go to trial. Picking apart a settlement really is a walk on the wild side. For every issue you may want to renegotiate, your spouse will have one, two or more. His response may cause you to think about others you’d like to throw back on the table. Before you know it, you’re going in reverse and getting farther apart than when you started. It is important to keep in mind that most settlements come after months of litigation, negotiation and stress. They are often finalized after a marathon negotiating session. Remember how grueling the journey was, how your spouse fought hard on certain issues, and the dynamics of the give and take. They are very important considerations when you think about your settlement. Having second thoughts is natural. However, if you evaluate the agreement as a whole, resist the temptation to dwell on individual issues, and have confidence in your lawyer, you will probably conclude that the settlement is the best way to end this chapter so you can move on to the next one.

One of their efforts was the Zugel Family Matching Gift

Fund for Global Initiatives, established by now-former Board Chair Christian Zugel and his wife Sonia. Donors making qualifying gifts to work in New Jersey or to a global program applied the “Zugel Match” to the global programs of their choice, from coral reefs in the Caribbean to grasslands in Mongolia. Zugel’s wife, Sonia, along with their daughters Ashleigh Conroy-Zugel and Lucia Zugel, catalyzed the birth of the Junior Ambassador program, which educates youth about the importance of conservation, and engages them in promoting conservation messaging. Several participating local students, including some from the Ranney School in Tinton Falls, were personally honored for their dedication to and efforts on behalf of nature in New Jersey at the award ceremony. Christian Zugel said, “I feel very proud to receive this award. The award is mainly for past deeds, as I was on the Board for ten years and was Chairman the final three years. We feel very good about all of our accomplishments over the past ten years. We conserved over 5,000 acres of land; worked in Cape May restoring shorelines and marshes - and please note the area survived Sandy without any problems – and more recently our work with rain gardens and storm run-offs in Camden, plus all the land conservation in northwest New Jersey. Finally, I believe every concerned citizen should get to know the work of The Nature Conservancy, both locally and on a global scale. It is science-based and one of the last truly non-political organizations.” For detailed information on The Nature Conservancy, visit www.nature.org.

A Night of Inspiration

Turns into a Night to Remember

THE HOPE FOR CHILDREN’S 2015 WINE TASTING EVENT

of your hometown for an aerial view and photo of your property.

was not only a “Night of Inspiration,” but also a night to remember. Imagine stepping into a world where you are greeted by hula hooping stilt walkers. As you entered into the beautiful and historic Bell Works of Holmdel, you felt a sense of wonder and excitement. The night began by sampling exquisite wines from The Wine Academy Superstores, while David Ellis Events served delectable hors d’oeuvres and tapas. There were decadent selections that were pleasing to any palate.

Hinds believes that, “through our commitment to serving the children, tonight we will make an impactful difference in improving the lives of countless families, and we truly appreciate our donors and our community’s amazing support.” The evening’s guest of honor was Scott O’Neil. O’Neil is the Chief Executive Officer for the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA), the New Jersey Devils (NHL) and the Prudential Center. He is a beacon of light that helps team up charities with the sports world. In addition to being an integral part of Hope for Children, he serves on boards of the Regional Chapters of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Enter Eric Hinds, co-founder of Hope for Children and Mayor of Holmdel, acting as auctioneer. There were many elaborate raffles and auction items including a “Super Sunday” package where special guests are invited into the NFL Press Box for a day with legendary sports stars Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw and the Fox NFL Crew, VIP Passes to a 76ers game where the lucky winners join the team for a courtside warm-up session, and a memorable helicopter ride with breathtaking views of New York City plus a flyby

The sold-out venue hosted over 550 guests and raised more than $140,000. Proceeds from the night will be used to assist numerous recipients, including the McCann Family of Holmdel whose son Christopher has septo-optic dysplasia, a rare congenital disorder that causes blindness, low muscle tone, seizures and hormonal problems. 18TH ANNUAL

Molzon's Fall Festival

O

Story Dina Quintano

n September 26, the Lincroft PTA held the first major event of the new school year. The festival is an annual fun-filled event that ushers in the fall season and is held at Molzon’s Landscape Nursery. This is the first of many fundraisers organized by the Lincroft PTA. It was a beautiful day and everyone was happy with the large turnout. There were many Lincroft school families, as well as other members of the Lincroft community. There were many activities and crafts for the kids to enjoy during the day, pumpkin painting, face painting, caricature drawings, hay rides, pony rides, a petting zoo and for the first time, a bouncy house. Some of the many crafts included painting flower pots, painting mason jars with neon paint, the popcorn hand, and mummy mason jars. For the sweet tooth, there were cotton candy, snow cones, and sugar sticks. Every year the Lincroft Fire Company brings a fire truck and stays around to explain how the equipment works. The kids are always excited to climb in and on the truck. A new attraction this year was the beehive demonstration by the Todhunter Family. David Todhunter and his daughter Amanda have been beekeeping for over three years. They started with two colonies and now have six spread between Lincroft, Holmdel and Tinton Falls. Mr. Todhunter said, “Amanda and I both enjoyed the Molzon’s Festival. We gave people the opportunity to taste local honey (very local as we have a hive on the Molzon’s property) and to compare our local honey with honey that is bought from a store. People were really amazed at the difference.” Molzon’s generously donated 15% of all proceeds to the Lincroft PTA, as well as 100% of the proceeds from the “Not So Scary Hayride.” A “Special of the

38

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Day” featured a fall decoration bundle package offered by Molzon’s. The special included a cornstalk, mum, pumpkin, bow and a bale of hay. Proceeds from this event will be used towards the school year’s enrichment programs, technology purchases, and classroom supplies. The committee was co-chaired by Sue Cacoilo, Angela Brzyski and Roe Veglak of the Lincroft PTA. Sue Cacoilo said, “We would like to thank Paul Molzon and the entire staff at Molzon Landscape Nursery. Every year they become a true partner of the Lincroft PTA and we continue to be grateful for all they do on that day. In addition, we would also like to thank the Todhunter Family for generously donating their time and proceeds from their beehive demonstration. We were really excited by how the Todhunters brought their beloved hobby of beekeeping to life in front of their young audience. Just as in previous years, the Lincroft Community comes together in the true spirit of volunteerism. Myself, Angela and Roe continue to be humbled by this experience, considering we only had about 2 ½ weeks to get the word out and make it work. It goes without saying that we can always count on Lincroft’s support for the Fall Festival.” PTA President Siobhan Smith noted, “This was another successful fundraising event for Lincroft Elementary. Our chairs Sue Cacoilo, Roe Veglak and Angela Brzyski combined tireless efforts, implementing new crafts for the kids, and the gardening packages provided by our wonderful host Molzon’s Nursery - all contributed to our successful outcome. I want to thank all the teen volunteers that help run our stations and all the families that donated their time and goods to the event. I am very proud of our school. Hopefully, every year can be as great as the one we had this year.”

Lincroft Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary PLANS HI-LO GAME LINCROFT FIRE COMPANY Station 10 Ladies Auxiliary is planning its fall Ladies Night Out with a HiLo Game to be held on November 13, 2015 at the firehouse on Newman Springs Road. If you have never played Hi-Lo, now is the time to learn. No skills are required but you must be able to laugh and enjoy yourself! This much-anticipated night is serious business for those who attend. Tickets may be purchased for the gift auction which includes items from local businesses. Bringing in food such as party appetizers, cheese and crackers, fruit platters, and many beverages of choice, adds to the delight of everyone. Groups of friends share a table as well as their food and before long the firehouse is filled with laughter. Dessert, coffee and tea are also available. One of the best parts about Hi-Lo is that there are multiple winners in each game and guests select their prize from a basket of wrapped gifts. Doors usually open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is $10 per person. There is a limit to the amount of persons who can occupy the area of the firehouse where the game is held, so advance ticket purchases are a good idea. For ticket or event information, contact Maria Dunn at 732.345.9525.

40

The Ladies Auxiliary is a support group for the Lincroft Volunteer Fire Company and the women provide assistance with various functions, such as helping to coordinate fundraisers, as well as supply food/beverages to the volunteer firefighters who remain “on call at the firehouse when there is a state of emergency. They have also purchased warm socks and hoods for the firemen. It is important to note that most of the needs of each volunteer fire company in Middletown are met by contributions from the community. Any additional assistance given by the Ladies Auxiliary is truly appreciated. Ladies Auxiliary President Bridget Matthews encourages the ladies in the community to become members of the Lincroft Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. The fun is inevitable, the laughter contagious, and the reward of helping our firefighters is priceless!

Our motto is always Paying it Forward with Charity and Gratitude,” said Dr. Mitchel Friedman, the event sponsor. “Dr. Cintron is a native Spanish speaker as were several volunteers. This made the non-English speaking patients feel at ease to explain their dental issues. Our hope is that this continues to be an annual event and that by our efforts, others can be inspired to give back to benefit their community. We were the first to bring Dentistry From The Heart to New Jersey in 2007 and now there are several offices that have their own events to assist those in need. That is personally very gratifying to me.”

The students are leaders of a Ranney School team called “Team WHATEVER”. The team walks in support of Ranney students, five in all, including Kieran and Lindsay, who have Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Thanks to the incredible support of friends and family, Team WHATEVER won JDRF’s recent Team Challenge to earn a spot at the official ribbon-cutting line. Team WHATEVER was founded in 2010 after Kieran was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 3. He named the Team “WHATEVER” because he called his insulin shots “whatevers.” Lindsay was diagnosed in 2012 and the two Ranney students teamed up to raise awareness among their Ranney classmates and together, do WHATEVER it takes to

cure Type 1. Through the past two walks, Team WHATEVER raised $25,000 in support of research to treat, prevent and cure T1D. In addition to participating in the ONEWalk, a group of Ranney School second-graders in Lindsay’s class held a button and magnet sale in the Spring of 2014. The students made more than 600 buttons and donated their proceeds ($2,700) to JDRF. This year, Team WHATEVER raised more than $15,600 for the 2015 walk and expanded its team of walkers. ONEWalk is JDRF’s largest T1D event in the world; the event raises fund to “turn Type One into Type None.” Approximately 200,000 youth (under age 20) and more than 1 million adults live with Type 1 Diabetes. By the year 2050, JDRF estimates that nearly 600,000 youth may have the disease. Kieran shares the following advice to kids newly diagnosed with Type 1, “Diabetes is hard when you first get it. It’s getting a lot easier now that there are pumps and sensors. The main rule is that you can’t sneak food, but you can eat whatever you want. All you need to do is get insulin. I know it will hurt, but

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

you will get used to it after a while. And someday, I know there will be a cure for diabetes and you can be a normal kid again.” Lindsay shares, “My insulin pump and my constant glucose monitor let my mom follow my blood sugars on her phone wherever she is. These technologies let me be a part of normal activities, like playing ‘Fiona’ in my camp’s production of SHREK. I am looking forward to seeing my friends at the walk!” Thanks to the generosity of friends and families supporting Team WHATVER, there have already been significant improvements in the technology available to manage T1D and more breakthroughs are on the horizon. The Ranney School community participated in two additional fundraising and awareness walks in October as well, as part of its Panthers with a Purpose community service collaborative: American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Point Pleasant Boardwalk and Red Bank’s CROP Walk for Hunger.

CORPORATE HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING GUIDE

THE HOLIDAY SEASON provides the

perfect opportunity for companies to take corporate branding to the next level. Using gifts to show your customers how much you appreciate their business helps promote your brand, but can also be an effective tool for customer retention, as well as new business development. Now is the time of year when business owners and managers must start planning on the best holiday gifts for their customers and clients. Suzi’s Sweet Shoppe would like to help with some ideas and inspiration for planning the perfect corporate holiday gifts with our Corporate Holiday Gift Giving Guide. A BASKET OF CHEER WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED

When it comes to corporate holiday giving, a beautiful gift basket of chocolate and candy can provide your customer’s

office with much needed good cheer during the holidays. Custom corporate branded gift baskets are a number one choice when sending gifts to clients. By adding your company logo it will help your gift stand out from the competition. We recommend combining different selections, like fudge, peppermint bark and assorted chocolates so that your gift has variety. Gift baskets are perfect for individual or office gifts. A BOX OR TWO WILL DO

Stacked boxes of assorted chocolates provide for a variety of flavors, fillings and chocolates and can be the perfect gift for large offices or individuals. You can select any size box or candy weight that is appropriate and your custom logo can go outside, or on a chocolate bar inside! Your client’s staff will love the delicious assortment of chocolate and will be reminded of you and your company every time they open the box to enjoy another piece. ATTENDING A CLIENT HOLIDAY PARTY?

Don’t just bring a bottle of wine. Bring a bottle of wine or champagne dipped in

“A Family Reunion to Die For”

chocolate and you will no doubt have the best client gift at the party! By combining two great gifts into a uniquely memorable one, your creativity will shine throughout the holiday season. NOT YOUR TYPICAL BUSINESS CARD

Instead of handing out your business card at your customer’s holiday party, bring along some custom chocolate business cards or bars of chocolate with your corporate logo on the wrapper. This is a fun way to add to the branding of your company while gift giving. These can be handed out individually or added to a custom gift basket for an overall branded holiday gift. SUZI’S SWEET SHOPPE makes corporate gift giving easy. All of our chocolates are homemade in our store and we personally create each and every gift basket to order. It’s important to place your order early for custom branded gifts so that they will be ready before the holidays and shipping is available for all your out-of-area clients. Don’t forget we can do platters and favors for your corporate holiday party too. Stop by the store located at 1100 Highway 35 in Middletown or call us at 732.796.0115 today for more information on how we can help make your corporate holiday gift giving easier this year. ANIMAL A DVOCACY TURKEYS ON FA C T O RY FA R M S

The Colts Neck Business Association (CNBA) has unveiled the new Colts Neck Township Map. It includes popular locations along with historical facts and photos. It also includes a calendar of events and agricultural fall seasonal highlights, harvest and picking schedules, as well as farm and orchard locations. It is being distributed to local merchants for distribution to customers. Keep your eye out around town and grab one before all the fall visitors and tourists do. Four times per year, the CNBA coordinates local networking events hosted by one of the many businesses within Colts Neck. The fall event was held on October 13, 2015 at the prestigious Trump National Golf Club. Thank you to Heidi Brzyski and her staff for another great event and their hospitality. At October’s general meeting on October 14, the CNBA welcomed both Kathleen Capristo, Colts Neck’s new Township Administrator, and Christine Hanlon, the new Monmouth County Clerk. Christine shared and educated the attendees on the duties and responsibilities of her office and the vital role it plays in keeping Monmouth County the treasure that it has become. The CNBA presented its effort of a marketing and branding plan for the town of Colts Neck and its business district to township officials, it was well-received and commended. Committees have been formed and are focusing on a strategy to improve and protect the town’s brand and visibility while balancing the upscale rural demographic that makes the area special. Over the course of the next few months, the CNBA will continue to be working with the county and township on a blueprint to articulate the vision of The Crossroads at Colts Neck, forward these goals and focus on raising the stature and attractiveness of the treasure that is our lovely town. For more information, visit www.ColtsNeckBusiness.org and find us on Facebook – ColtsNeckBusinessAssociation.

PR OV I DE D BY K AT H L E E N S C H AT Z M A N N NJ S t a t e D i r e c t o r | T h e H u m a n e S o c i e t y of the United States As always, we will celebrate the idea of giving thanks this month. But given the table fare for the vast majority of people, we are less than enthusiastic about what we know happens to turkeys on factory farms in the run-up to our American holiday. Americans eat more meat than just about any nation in the world, second to Luxembourg only, and most of the turkey products are consumed in November and December. While the sheer volume of animal products consumed has enormous implications for animals, the environment and rural communities, the means of production also is an issue. Animals’ health, fitness, and welfare matter and among farm animals, there is no food-producing animal who has been more adversely manipulated from a breeding and genetics perspective than the turkey. As many of us have seen in our area, our wild turkeys are alert and fast-f lying, active during the day and perched in trees to sleep at night. But most industrially produced turkeys are crammed inside giant, overcrowded warehouses, and have been bred to grow so unnaturally large at such a quick pace that by the end of their lives, many have trouble even standing or walking. They have such massive chests that the birds are unable even to mate naturally anymore, meaning that nearly all farm-raised turkeys come about through artificial insemination. Some of these animals, just weeks old, die from heart attacks. So this holiday season, be grateful. But also be conscious and aware, especially for turkeys, since custom places them at the center of the plate and the American table. For those who will be eating turkey, there are more and more humane-minded farmers who select for healthier birds and keep the animals in better, more livable conditions. That’s a positive development, with farmers exhibiting some basic care and respect for their animals. And for those of you who want to reduce or abstain from meat consumption, it’s easier than ever to do. There are plant-based “meat” products that are hearty, healthy, and of a familiar form. These options give celebrants an opportunity to have Thanksgiving with all the fixings, minus the animals. HAPPY THANKSGIVING and visit www.humanesociety.org for more information.

Oak Hill Academy eighth grade student, Thomas Wang of Marlboro, was one of only 29 students nationwide, and the sole New Jersey student, named as a recipient of the prestigious Caroline D. Bradley scholarship. The Caroline D. Bradley scholarship is a full fouryear, merit-based high school scholarship. The scholarship can be used nationally toward any high school or approved alternative educational program that best fits the Scholar’s individual intellectual, academic and personal needs and goals. “Thomas is an exceptional example of a true Oak Hill student. His excellent academics are complemented by a desire to seek knowledge and challenge himself,” Headmaster, Joseph A. Pacelli stated. “He is involved in all aspects of the OHA community including Student Council, athletics, and academic teams. We are proud of his achievements and confident that he will contribute enormously to his chosen high school.” Founded in 2002 in California on the basis that gifted young students could reach their full potential in a learning environment suited to their individual needs, it is now a nationally recognized scholarship that not only provides the four year scholarship, but also the support and counsel needed in choosing the right high school, college and beyond through a strong community of intellectual peers and cross-generational support network. Thomas has not decided which high school he will attend to date, but, wherever he decides to pursue his education, he will embody a Caroline D. Bradley scholar as a student who “excels academically, displays a genuine quest for knowledge, thrives in the discovery process, is a leader among peers and embraces the ideals of integrity, service and honesty.” He has taken two Advanced Placement exams and is currently studying Variable Calculus as his math class this semester. “We appreciate all of the help that OHA provided to Thomas,” his father, David Wang, wrote in an email to Oak Hill. “This is impossible without OHA!” The Oak Hill Academy family would like to congratulate Thomas and his family on this spectacular achievement and opportunity.

At the center of the evening, in honor of our beloved service men and women, Brian Gawne, Vice President of The Fisher House Foundation will offer a tribute to our military heroes. Fisher House Foundation is celebrating and commemorating 25 years of service to our military, veterans and their families, providing comfort homes for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes provide a “home away from home” so military and veterans’ families can be close to their loved ones during a medical crisis. Today, there are 65 Fisher Houses across the country, in Germany and the United Kingdom. More than 250,000 families have been provided 5.8 million nights of lodging, saving them more than $282 million since the program began in 1990. Additionally, Fisher House Foundation’s Hero Miles program has provided more than 58,000 airline tickets that allow families to heal together. Scholarships in the amount of $15 million have been given to military and veteran family members. The Foundation has also sponsored national and international wounded warrior athletic competitions to celebrate the return to health of disabled military and veterans.

“L IGH T U P A MEMORY ”

Plans for the December “Memory Tree” are already underway. A $10.00 contribution signifies a light in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of a living recipient. His/her name will be inscribed in a special “Memory” book, which will be on display in the church gathering space. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a lovely card to send to the recipient or the family of a deceased honoree. The deadline for forms is November 29, 2015. All contributions will benefit St. Mary’s parish. Participants are also invited to the joyous tree lighting ceremony, with music by St. Mary’s choir and a reception, with delicious refreshments in the Gathering Space, after the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, December 12, 2015. For more information, call the office at 732.780.2666 or the co-chairs, Molly Aiello at 732.598.6808 and Freda O’Doherty at 732.577.9541. Information and forms are also available on St. Mary’s website at www.stmaryscoltsneck.org. All are invited to be a part of this lovely Christmas tradition. LET TER TO THE EDITOR As the fog disappeared and a gorgeous fall day unfolded, my family and I headed out to one of Monmouth County’s many parks for a day of planned festivities for our son and family with the Cub Scouts of Colts Neck. We had been looking forward to this day for some time as there is something special about the smell of smoke and the sound of whistling rockets as they launch almost 1,000 feet into the air, explode, and then f loat back to earth against a perfect backdrop of blue skies and drifting cirrus clouds. For days beforehand, like mad scientists over outlaid newspapers, my son and I had been assembling our rocket, which we aptly named “chocolate smash”, because of its color and its demeanor. This year is our second year as part of Colts Neck’s Cub Scouts Pack 90, which consists of over 30 kids at this stage and has been actively involved in Colts Neck for over 26 years. What attracted us to this organization is firstly, the fact that it is all volunteer run, and secondly, provides guidance in secular activities that focus on a strong set of moral values. An added benefit is that these events are often focused on the outdoors and educate them on how to be stewards of our environment. Closing out the “Rocket Launch” day under the shade of a large tree, the families of all the cub scouts gathered together as we shared charcoal grilled burgers and hotdogs for lunch that were served with an array of goodies provided by a number of parents enjoying the day. As we took home the remaining parts of our rocket, we ref lected on what a great day we had and how many new people we met. We realized too again, how special our town of Colts Neck is and with organizations like Pack 290, it will continue to be.

T R U N K O R T R E AT S T ORY D I N A Q U I N TA N O The Lincroft Elementary School PTA hosted a Family Fun Night on October 16, 2015 at Lincroft School. The PTA organized a fun-filled Trunk or Treat in the school’s courtyard. Approximately 100 families attended the event which was organized by co-chairs Christine Nolan, Regina Crosby and Maria Eboli. It was a perfect fall night and the courtyard was packed with students dressed up in wide variety of costumes. The Lincroft PTA organizes these events as a way to give back to the school families who volunteer and spend endless hours helping out on student-related projects and events. Including the Family Fun Night Committee trunk, there were approximately 14 cars that decorated their trunks and handed out candy. Everyone did an amazing job decorating their cars. There were many themes including: Shark Bloodbath, Tailgate Party, Candy Land, Beach Party, Nightmare Before Christmas and Despicable Me and Minions. The night started out with the students trick or treating followed by several contests, including best decorated trunk, best individual costume per grade and most original costume. The best decorated trunk went to Shark Bloodbath decorated by the Doughney Family, second place went to Nightmare Before Christmas decorated by Konefal Family, and third place went to Candy Land decorated by Girl Scout Troop 854. The most original costume went to second grader Madison Moran who was dressed up as a Gumball Machine. Co-chair Christine Nolan said, “The 2nd Annual Lincroft Elementary “Family Fun Night Trunk or Treat” event went off without a hitch. Great costumes, great trunk designs and of course great treating!”

HOLMDEL COMMUNITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST welcomed members of the community, family, and friends to their annual Country Bazaar on October 10, 2015. During the six-hour event, visitors were able to buy handmade holiday craft items, and visit the Trash and Treasure area which offered great buys such as books, kitchen items, toys, and jewelry. Other items available were homemade cookies, breads, and cupcakes, as well as a delicious lunch.

The wait staff consisted of the men, women and youth from the church, as well as Reverend Rusty Eidmann-Hicks who served some of the guests. The lunch took place in the main, older portion of the Fellowship Hall, which dates back to the late 1800s. It was remodeled to expose the original wood ceiling and the floors were brought back to their original beauty as well. The renovation of Fellowship Hall included additional rooms that are used for the many functions provided by the church. Items for the craft and bake sale were set up on tables in the newly renovated Fellowship Hall. In this new room, a tin ceiling was installed and hand buffed and details in the ceiling were hand painted by members of the church. This was done in order to have the new Hall blend well and keep the 1800s feel of the original Fellowship Hall. Reverend Rusty Eidmann-Hicks said of the renovation, “It’s been a solid ten years in the making. It has helped to open the Church to more people, and to new members.” The Fellowship Hall can now accommodate special gatherings such as birthday parties, wedding receptions, Memorial Services, meetings, or other special events. More information on utilizing this beautiful, newly renovated Fellowship Hall can be directed to Susan Davis at 732.946.8821. Many thanks to Sharon Wessel who chaired the Bazaar and ran the Trash and Treasure; the chefs and wait staff from the kitchen; and all of the members of the church who volunteered to set up and work the Bazaar as well as clean up afterward.

Harvest Home Festival at Historic Longstreet Farm PHOTOS JOSHUA REICH

Harvest Home Festival held at Longstreet Farm on September 27, 2015 was reminiscent of an 1890s old-fashioned country fair. The living historical farm, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offered a peek back in time to when neighbors worked together to harvest, make apple cider, or just have fun. Families enjoyed demonstrations by a blacksmith and woodworker, as well as watching a plowing demonstration. Wagon rides, old-fashioned games for the children, a corn husking competition, pie-eating contests, and musical entertainment were all a part of this event. Displays of beautiful needlework, as well as competitions for baked goods and home-grown vegetables offered a chance to win a prize ribbon. A fun opportunity for a prize was guessing the weight of a gigantic pumpkin. This event was definitely family-friendly and kid-approved!
