Meet your neighbor from Rumson, Dr. Robyn Del Negro. CM: You opened your functional medicine practice one year ago. How’s it going? Dr. Del Negro: Lots of firsts for me, after a 30-year career as a hospital-based physician, running a small business has been challenging and exhilarating at the same time. Like all the other small business owners who have opened their doors during the COVID pandemic, we’ve had a unique set of challenges. Don’t laugh, but the most challenging thing has been the tech component. It’s just not in my DNA. CM: Any upside to opening during the pandemic? Dr. Del Negro: People are more motivated to invest in their health and be proactive and preventative. Early on many of us had an opportunity to slow down a bit, cook at home, be curious about supplements and herbs to ward off the virus and enjoy more snooze time which is key to your immune health. Yes, the pandemic has opened all of our eyes to caring for ourselves just a little bit more than before. CM: What’s your focus these days? Dr. Del Negro: I am really excited about sharing the functional medicine blueprint to aging well. It’s a series of steps that we need to take today to help us continue to be vibrant, healthy, connected, and filled with purpose as we age. Functional medicine views all the different organ systems of the body together and interconnected. Traditional medicine views all of these organ systems in isolated silos. Functional medicine treats the whole system not just the symptoms. Your health at the present moment is determined by genetics, inflammation, nutrition, gut health, stress, toxin load, movement, sleep, and connection. We try to remove things that cause imbalance and provide things that can restore balance.

CM: What would I expect in terms of a patient experience if I came to see you? Dr. Del Negro: Our office looks more like a cool, funky NYC studio apartment than a traditional doctor’s office. We were fortunate enough to be able to move into the newly renovated Anderson Building, now known as the new Sickles Building on Monmouth Street in Red Bank. We wanted to be in a location that felt upbeat and filled with energy. We spend about 90 minutes with our patients on our first meeting. I have already spoken to the new patient by phone prior and reviewed his or her health story through our intake forms. I want our time together spent filling in the blanks. I complete a physical exam along with bio impedance imaging on our scale and then we collaborate on the next steps. It could be a trial with a specialty food plan, breathing exercises for stress management, techniques with our health coach Jeanne Blodi, specialty labs that may look at hormones, microbiome gut imbalances, micronutrient deficiencies, or heavy metal testing. There is nothing cookie cutter about our approach.


The patients that benefit the most are those that are motivated to make a change in nutrition, sleep, stress management, purpose, and movement.

CM: Who would benefit from seeing you? Dr. Del Negro: I am a conventionally trained, board-certified MD who has practiced medicine for 30 years with specialty training in functional medicine and integrative medicine. I can offer all of my patients a unique approach to wellness. Dr. Mark Hyman speaks about chronic disease such as obesity, diabetes, dementia, and autoimmune disease to name a few as a gradual decline in energy, function, and wellness. You just don’t wake up one morning 20 pounds overweight. It’s looking at, and exploring, the root cause of disease with the entire body as one integrated system. It’s also being open to taking the steps now to feel better and create health going forward. The patients that benefit the most are those that are motivated to make a change in nutrition, sleep, stress management, purpose, and movement. Obviously we don’t change everything at once. It’s truly a domino effect. We are realistic in our goals but “gently accountable” I like to say. There is no magic pill given out here. CM: I know that you don’t accept insurance. Dr. Del Negro: The current insurance model and approach to medicine is based on disease. I think that we are going to see a paradigm shift toward preventative care

and healthy aging, but presently the insurance companies value the conventional model that relies on prescription meds and surgical procedures. We are committed to the functional medicine model that addresses the underlying causes of your symptoms with specific nutritional and lifestyle recommendations. We can’t provide the same time-intensive well researched personalized approach within the current insurance model. I am sensitive to patient’s financial stressors so I welcome and encourage that conversation as well. Spending 90 minutes with my patients gives us time to get on the same page. I also have information on our blog page about health topics that anyone can visit. We have a free rediscover series event where we invite other local health providers to share their expertise. My mission is to empower our community to embrace healthy behaviors and optimal wellness. CM: Anything else you would like to share? Dr. Del Negro: I love that my patients challenge me to think outside the box. I am just a science geek with a crazy curiosity and I love sharing all I have learned.

The Monmouth County SPCA held its 2021 Fur Ball Gala in October at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank. The sold-out, outdoor event brought together 300 of the shelter’s supporters and friends to celebrate 75 years of existence as the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This year’s theme celebrated the organization’s 75th anniversary and featured an entire history exhibit with photos, news clippings, videos, and literature dating back to 1945. The success of the event would not have been possible without the support of sponsors, The Hesse Companies, Fran & Paul Turner, Kaseya and the Cooper Voccola Family Foundation. The Holmdel Township School Board recently voted to approve the appointment of Alicia Farese as Principal of Indian Hill Elementary School. She assumed her new responsibility on October 1. Farese, who served as Supervisor of Humanities in Holmdel, brings extensive administrative and classroom experience to the position. She worked briefly in publishing before realizing that her true passion was working with students. She began as Head PreK teacher and Assistant Director at the Goddard School in Hazlet. After some years, Farese became an English teacher, Dean of Discipline, and Interim Principal in the Sayerville School District. Prior to becoming a supervisor in Holmdel, Farese was Assistant Principal in the Plumsted New Egypt School District where, in addition to her other responsibilities, she was the district HIB coordinator. Ms. Farese earned a B.A. from NYU. She has earned two master’s degrees: Education and Educational Leadership. “Since joining the district, Alicia Farese has distinguished herself by demonstrating highly effective leadership and professionalism. Ms. Farese’s leadership skills were particularly impressive given the challenges presented by the Coronavirus pandemic over the last year,” said School Board President Vicky Flynn following the board vote. Interim Superintendent Lee Seitz reviewed resumes of dozens of interested candidates for this position but was continually drawn back to Farese’s integrity, intelligence, and energy, and her established reputation as a leader within the Holmdel school community who knows and is respected by the students, staff, and community. “I’ve hired dozens of principals over the years, and I am confident that Ms. Farese is prepared to take the next step in her career,” said Dr. Seitz. “Her strong grasp of educational issues, her experience working in Holmdel, and her willingness to make tough decisions made her the right candidate to lead Indian Hill Elementary School.” “I'm excited to have this opportunity to give back to the Holmdel School community in a meaningful way, as principal of Indian Hill. I thank the Board for their faith and confidence in my ability to lead this school, especially during this critical time as we emerge from this pandemic. I look forward to getting to work immediately to address the needs of our students and the Indian Hill staff,” said Alicia Farese. Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence Hosts Night Out in Support of Students The Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence (HFEE) held a fundraising event in September at the Roof Deck at Bell Works. The event, with more than 300 guests decked out in Holmdel blue and white, raised $20,000 to support the organization and its annual gift to the Holmdel school district. “The return of events is a welcomed one as it allows us to accomplish our important fundraising goals, while bringing the community together in the spirit of fun and giving back,” said event co-chair Sandra Zarraga. “Historically we’ve held several key events throughout the year, but living through a pandemic meant lots of cancelled events like our annual gala, Battle of the Faculties, and 5K run at Bell Works, which we will bring back in 2022-23.” To learn more about the HFEE or donate, visit hfee.org.

“Hops, Bees, and Christmas Trees” is how brothers Bob and Mickey Clark refer to the business. The 23-acre Fir Farm in Colts Neck has been selling Christmas trees for nearly 40 years, but the brothers are also beekeepers and harvesters of hops, running an all- organic farm free of any pesticides. “Every year we have families coming back to The Fir Farm telling us that they visited as kids,” said Bob. “Now they’re returning with their children to the farm and continuing their Christmas tradition.” The farm provides locals with the option of purchasing a pre-cut Christmas tree or cutting down the tree of choice, and in recent years the brothers have regularly supplied towns like Red Bank and Asbury Park with massive Frasier Firs to be lit up for holiday events. The Clark brothers agree, however, that no tradition has meant more to their family business than the trees they give away. For the past eight years, The Fir Farm has participated in a program known as Trees for Troops, an initiative founded in 2005 by the National Christmas Tree Association and its offshoot, the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation. Annually Trees for Troops delivers thousands of Christmas trees to families and individuals stationed at domestic military bases, as well as those located abroad in active war zones. “Trees for Troops delivers real Christmas trees, joy, and happiness to families living on military bases around the country during the holiday season and we are happy to be part of the program!” shared Bob. To date, the Trees for Troops program has delivered more than 157,000 trees to military families in the U.S. and to troops stationed overseas. “We started with Trees for Troops in

2014,” said Bob. “Our dad was in the Navy and we have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for those who serve our country. Everyone should have a real Christmas tree for the holiday season and we are happy to help trees get to families living on military bases.” This year, Trees for Troops Weekend is December 3rd through December 5th, and the farm is accepting tree donations now in person and online at their e-store. Beyond trees, one can also find hops, honey, and grapes on the farm. “2021 was our seventh year harvesting hops and most likely was the biggest hop harvest ever in the state of NJ,” said Bob. “We celebrated Hop Harvest Fest on three Saturdays in August with live music, BBQ, and of course hop picking, all done by hand. We had a great time picking for Alternate Ending Brewery, Ship Bottom Brewery, 3BR Distillery, Toms River Brewing, and Twin Lights Brewing and they all made delicious beverages with our hops.” The Fir Farm also delivered freshly

picked hops to The Bent Spoon in Princeton and Amici Gelato & Caffe in Asbury Park. Both locations made sorbets with the hops. Next, the farm is looking to its vineyard for a growing harvest. “In 2020 we planted special grapes developed by the Cornell no-spray program and established a small vineyard here on the farm,” shared Bob. “We had a nice grape harvest this year and look forward to an even bigger and better harvest next year.” Fir Farm Honey is another local favorite, with the brothers keeping all of their hives located on the farm. The honey is raw, all natural, and never heated. A member of both the Jersey Fresh and Grown in Monmouth programs and also a member of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce and the Colts Neck Business Association, the brothers take their commitment to local and community seriously. Work Redefined I am the very proud father of two daughters and a son. While raising them in a relatively affluent bubble where school-aged gifts were Louis Vuitton and BMWs, we struggled to frame a value system that rewarded hard work and good decisions. When my son turned 16, I thought it would be a good idea to “make” him go work on a working farm. So I made a phone call, and lined it up. We both got more than we bargained for. He was put to a physical and resourcefulness test that was beyond his capacity bordering on dangerous. Michael ended up writing his college essays on that experiment as it impacted him (possibly traumatized him) for years, perhaps still does. He learned what manual work is, and made a life decision that he would pursue academics to make his fortunes in business, and not with physical endeavors. Americans are quitting their jobs at a record pace. Frustrated employers were assured the labor shortage would ease when the extra “incentives” expired as mass return to work would let business staff up, supply chains thaw, and inflation cool. That isn’t what happened. Millions who left the workforce during the pandemic have yet to return. Economists say Covid-19 is the culprit, but there may be more going on than meets the eye. Increased travel trends examined by Barron’s magazine suggest otherwise with travel demand skyrocketing, which raises questions about why workers are staying home and whether they will come back to the traditional workplace. Employees now seem to be in the driver’s seat and want to see organizations put a greater emphasis on flexibility, competitive compensation, and overall well-being once the pandemic is over, according to a report from McKinsey. Companies around the world are reassessing their policies and working arrangements after the pandemic tore up traditional working practices. Work-life balance, flexibility, and overall quality of life are front-of-mind for employees as they look to their employers for certainty about the future. Postpandemic, most employees want to work from home three days a week the report shows. More than 25% said that they would consider switching employers if their organization returns to fully on-site work. An overwhelming number said mental health is their top priority. My youngest daughter works for a prestigious Wall Street firm. She has been going to work an average of 2.5 days per week for the last year. Management is frozen, enforcing them in fear they may lose their investment in top tier talent. The pandemic has changed attitudes and priorities around work, shuffled where people choose to both work and live. The newest


generation of employees to the workforce enter into a Twilight Zone of work structures, policies, and environments. It stands to reason that a person avoiding work to avoid infection would probably avoid mass transit, but why then is “human mobility” up in travel, sports, entertainment, and retail? The answer is the work paradigm has changed thanks to technology and the ability to execute business from almost anywhere. The pandemic gave Americans a reality check on work life balance almost eliminating the proverbial “9-5”, five-day work week. Just like our mobile smart phone allowed us to “stay connected” pre-pandemic. This paradigm has now shifted to the workplace and our personal and professional lives have merged into an “always on” connected blur. No more separation from the stresses of work during and after a commute home. Years ago, I had 250 employees and always working to maximize their productivity we dreaded when they were out of the office as we couldn’t see what they were doing. I suppose we didn’t trust them on some level. But technology has proven that mindset wrong as good workers are responsible and can be trusted to work remotely. Even productivity, when you give them freedoms and latitude, actually increases as they are always accessible and “plugged in” in this new work-life post pandemic, technology filled existence. On the positive side, the pandemic also prompted a record number of new businesses. It is possible that either by necessity or entrepreneurial energy that more people appreciated working for themselves as litmus tested with the “working from home” autonomously. This also subtracts from the pool of available workers as we falsely wait for employment levels to return to pre-pandemic levels. Also, vaccine mandates may be backfiring in some cases, spurring some people to quit or job hunt in order to avoid the shots. If healthcare workers, teachers, and basketball players are willing to quit instead of get vaccinated, can we really expect them to return soon? It’s time to start asking smarter questions and find ways to recognize this pandemic ignited work-life balance mind shift or suffer the consequences. Can you go to a retail or any business that doesn’t have a Help Wanted sign posted? Successful people do what unsuccessful people won’t – work! I honestly believe we are put on this earth for a purpose. The difference between contentment and frustration is your ability to seek and find your purpose. My opinion is that the pandemic almost forced us to redefine priorities and purpose. And the silver lining in all of this is that it is quality of life, time with friends and family spawned a new “selfishness” trying to have your (work) cake and eat it (life) too. Maybe we all need to spend a little time working on the farm like Michael to figure this out. Life is short. Three's A Crowd When you think of divorce you most commonly conjure an image of two adults getting divorced and working out or fighting over custody, support, the division of property and dozens of other issues. However, it is not uncommon for divorces to involve more than two adults. Parents who loaned money to the couple may intervene in the case to collect the debt. Was it a loan or a gift? Often there is no documentation. It’s family! Gifts have a way of becoming “loans” when the marriage breaks up. Loans often mutate into “gifts.” Small businesses that are subject to equitable distribution or provide reported or unreported income may involve other partners or shareholders who aren’t too comfortable with a partner’s spouse going through business books and records. They sometimes intervene to protect the business and their privacy. Grandparents who are at odds with both divorcing parties may petition the family

court for visitation with their grandchildren. Although the law gives them the avenue to pursue visitation over the couple’s objections, they have a steep legal hill to climb to achieve their goal. In extreme cases the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) may intervene in a divorce to protect children from abuse or neglect. In the most egregious cases the state may actually try to terminate parental rights and place the children for adoption. Recently, the New Jersey Law Journal ran a story on “throuples”, one of the newest permutations of the modern family. Throuples are multi-person polyamorous relationships in which more than two adults engage in more than one romantic or sexual relationship at a time. Although people in these types of relationships lack the legal rights and protections of married couples (except for those in the throuple who are actually married to each other), there may still be arguments and potentially le-

gal battles over custody, support, and property. This is an evolving concept. As the holidays approach, I am reminded of the wealthy client who bought a beautiful diamond necklace at Harry Winston for his girlfriend for Christmas. Unfortunately for him, Harry Winston mistakenly delivered it to his wife – complete with his note to his girlfriend. Predictably, the girlfriend became the third adult in the case. There are countless other scenarios in which others may become immersed in a couple’s divorce. The point is that a divorce doesn’t only affect the couple. It affects their children and, potentially, extended family members, business associates, personal acquaintances, and even the state or federal governments. Be prepared to face these possibilities by discussing possible third party involvement at the initial consultation with your lawyer. Anticipating, planning, and strategizing will help to resolve these ancillary issues. Ignoring them won’t!

David not only pursues new possibilities, he does them incredibly well. His first Broadway show, Memphis, won four Tony awards. He also is the composer and co-lyricist for Diana The Musical, that recently reopened on Broadway after last year’s shutdown, and has another musical in the wings. Even with all this, he makes time to do good works in the community.


David’s three children, twins Colton and Gabby, and Arty grew up in Colts Neck. He and Lexi, his wife, enjoy life there, along with Edie, their much loved “ten-pound Jack Russell terrorist.” He is a true local, listening to Brookdale radio and reading CM each month. David took time from the busy Diana rehearsal schedule to explain his journey from a seven-year-old pianist to international rock star and award-winning composer/lyricist. CM: When did you first realize you loved music? David: When I was five, my father taught me trumpet, but I wasn’t that good. There was a piano teacher, Emery Hack, a Julliard graduate who led the NBC orchestra and radio for 16 years who had retired and was giving lessons. I had to audition, and when I was seven years old, I heard him playing Mozart and Beethoven and Brahms and Bach and Shubert. I just couldn’t believe this piece of wood was making that much beautiful music and I thought, ‘I need to do that.’ And so, from age seven, I studied with him every Wednesday for 15 years.

up late and I remember I saw it on the black and white TV. I ran outside and could see the moon and I could not believe that people could do that. It showed me that a human being can do anything, anything you put your mind to. CM: When did you join a band?

CM: I notice you have many references to the moon in your songs and writings. Is that significant?

David: Jon Bon Jovi had a cover band called the Atlantic City Expressway and I joined that in my junior year of high school in 1979, when Jon and I were both Credit: David Bergman 17 years old. David: (Laughs) I was here first, Bruce moved into my town. Yes, it is funny that we had that kind of band. It was a 10-piece horn band and it was fun doing all those great Springsteen and Asbury Jukes songs we loved. We then did those blue-eyed soul Memphis songs and I really fell in love with that kind of music. Jon left the band and we played for a little bit longer, and then I went to Rutgers to study pre-med and music.

David: At the time there was no Bon Jovi band, just us going into New York really late to record songs. That’s when Runaway came out and where I came up with that song’s riff. I knew we were going to make a record deal. I was still going to Rutgers, and then I thought, ‘I want to go to Julliard.’ So, I dropped the medicine part at Rutgers, stayed with the music part, auditioned for Julliard… and then we got a record deal. CM: You have been with Bon Jovi for about 38 years, toured the world, and sold more than 150 million records. What is the secret to this longevity? David: Even as young humans we always cared to be ‘that great live band.’

We wanted to kick ass. We just go out there and when we hit that stage, we play our hearts out. CM: What led you to venture from rock to musical theater? David: Right around 1990, I decided to write songs with some other songwriters. At the end of the 90s, Curtis Stigers (jazz singer) actually sang one of my songs called This Time. Clive Davis said it was the best song he heard all year. My publisher at the time suggested I write musicals, and I said, ‘What are musicals?’ When he said he could get me 18 songs covered 18 times a week, I said, ‘I’m interested.’ CM: Had you seen many shows? David: I didn’t really. It’s funny, I saw Fiddler On The Roof in 1975, a Bar Mitzvah present from my parents. It was with Zero Mostel, it was great. CM: How did writing musicals go from a suggestion to reality? David: In 1998 I wrote a musical based on Sweet Valley High (books). It never sold. It was a little too early for rock and roll and musicals. People were saying,

There was no music, no melody, no anything. It was in that vein of music I had done for Atlantic City Expressway with all those great Memphis songs. Joe said to get back to him with a song. That was about 1:00 in the afternoon. At that time the internet wasn’t so strong and I knew the FedEx pick up in Colts Neck was 6:30 pm. I ran down to my studio, I wrote some stuff, I added some lyrics. Then I got a drum machine, I put the piano down, the bass down, the organ down, the horn parts, and I sang the lead, I sang all the backgrounds, I mixed it, burned it to a CD and got it to FedEx by 6:30 and it was on his doorstep the next morning.

for me. Which is kind of crazy because I never went to theater school. I’m the outsider in one way but yet I bring a fresh perspective. CM: What was your reaction when Joe DiPietro suggested Diana?

Diana is rock of the 80s; the Queen is very regal with snare drums and horns; Charles is a string quartet but still in a rock format; Camilla is like light FM, a little acoustic guitar... ‘It’s too loud!’ and ‘Why do you keep repeating that part?’ and I was like, ‘Umm it’s called a chorus; it’s called a rock song…’ Then in 2001, I got a script for Memphis The Musical, written by Joe DiPietro who is now my collaborator. Joe was looking for a rock composer.

David: I was like, ‘What?!’ But then I thought it was a great idea. It has no winners and losers, or heroes and victims. We just wrote it as a human story which happens to be about royals. The subtext title would be Trapped in the Kingdom. I had the idea to make all the characters have a voice: Diana is rock of the 80s; the Queen is very regal with snare drums and horns; Charles is a string quartet but still in a rock format; Camilla is like light FM, a little acoustic guitar; and the paparazzi are like punk and ugly. CM: How does the fulfillment you get from Bon Jovi differ from that of musicals? David: It’s funny, they’re different and the same. In Bon Jovi, I’m the master


of my own destiny. I get up on stage, I play those songs- it’s up to me to make it happen. There is no independent thinking with Broadway. All the words and music come from the composer and lyricist. I take my rock and roll energy and put it into those actors. As a singer I can give them that example. CM: It sounds like you are very hands-on in the productions. David: I always say I’m the first person to put on the lights and the last guy to turn off the lights. The thing I really love about it is it is the most difficult algorithm you could ever look at. One little change here effects a change there. CM: Has there been a downside to fame for you? David: I never felt any real downside. I’m not the lead singer so I get to fly under the radar a little bit. I think that was probably a little better for my kids too. If anyone asks me for a picture or an autograph I’m always, ‘Of course!’ It’s a nice thing and I remember getting a picture from one of my heroes made me feel great. CM: Is there someone you would like to meet or play music with? David: I’m lucky to have met so many of my heroes. But if I could go back in time and play with the Beatles, or the Stones, Zeppelin, or Yes- I would love to do that. CM: As busy as you are you take the time to do good works: using your voice to restore music education for millions of students; donating a piano to the US State Dept; working with organizations including VH1 Save the Music, Only Make Believe, Best Buddies; Bon Jovi band donating one million dollars for Katrina relief; and much more. David: I think when you’re blessed, you have to help others. I like to quietly do it. I do a lot with bringing music education back into the schools. I went to Trenton

explaining to the lawmakers, ‘You’re cutting music education from the programs to save money but music is math, music is band after school and involves team building…It gives people confidence, a career.’ We ran a pilot program in NJ. It brought music back into the curriculum and started going nationwide because of that day. CM: IF you have spare time, what do you enjoy doing? David: I have a lot of spare time with this pandemic. It’s the most time off I’ve had since I’m zero to seven. My wife rides horses. She does dressage and it’s really cool to watch. I’m too afraid to get up on a horse but I love to watch it. CM: What is your next project? David: Joe and I have another musical we wrote about seven years ago and put on pause. It is about 95% done now, called Chasing the Song, a fictional story

about the first woman song publisher in 1960. CM: Looking back, how would you describe your original plan for pursuing music as a career? David: I figured I’d give it a year. I was 21 years old in 1983 when we got the record deal. In 1984 I left my house for my one-year trial. I created a “gap year”— I’m still on my gap year!

Monmouth Conservation Foundation Hosts Cocktail Fundraiser

Funds raised will ensure a permanent legacy of open space and natural habitat throughout Monmouth County

Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF) held its premier outdoor event of the season on September 25. The event was hosted by Vikki and Bill Marraccini at their Dogwood Hills Farm in Locust, where they welcomed 178 guests. Funds raised at the event will be used toward several projects on which MCF is currently working. “We were really pleased to be able to gather outdoors with so many friends of MCF,” said Executive Director of Monmouth Conservation Foundation William D. Kastning. “A high point of our evening was a celebration of the two largest gifts in Monmouth Conservation Foundation’s history: a $2 million contribution to support the creation of a city park for underserved members of our community; and a $1 million

On a September afternoon, the large private event tenting behind the Red Barn at Bayonet Farm in Holmdel was full of nearly 300 people, all gathered for a memorial ceremony to honor their loved ones who had passed over the last year and a half. The special event, which culminated with a butterfly release, was hosted by Holmdel Funeral Home. It is an event Holmdel Funeral Home traditionally hosts annually for the families they serve and care for. This year was even more special as it provided a gathering venue for many families who were unable to socialize due to pandemic restrictions during the passing of their loved ones. Owners of Holmdel Funeral Home; Bill Boglioli, his wife Denise and their son Scott, were at the entrance of the tent greeting guests as they arrived. It was an emotional time for most with many hugs, tears, smiles and laughter shared. “My father Sergio Gangi, passed in May and the whole orchestration of his funeral as well as this beautiful event here today speaks very well of the Boglioli family,” said Holmdel resident Janine Jhanjee. “It gives us a lot of peace to have people who care so much. We felt from the funeral home to the church to the cemetery, and now here today, is such a special way to say goodbye to our father. To know how much the owners of Holmdel Funeral Home care is comforting and makes a world of difference. Bill Boglioli knows what you need before you even know what you need. It was a great honor to have my father’s service done so well. Today’s event was just beautiful.”

The evening began with an inspiring invocation by Deacon Tom DiCanio from St. Catherine’s in Holmdel, who also serves as the current President of The Holmdel Kiwanis Foundation, Inc. The Frances Foundation proudly recognized a few of its warriors, including warrior McKenzy Hupke as its 2021 Warrior of the Year; Trustee Cathy Shalloo as 2021 Volunteer of the Year; and Obi Wand as 2021 Jr. Trustee of the Year. A special recognition award was given to AmWins Brokerage of New Jersey and the Ciccarelli Family from Holmdel. The Super 50/50 cash raffle was a sell-out with the sale of all 1,000 tickets, which created three prizes totaling $50,000. A NJFOAShore Conference High School Football Officiating Crew won the first-place prize of $30,000; second and third place winners won prizes of $15,000 and $5,000. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, and the dedication and commitment of its trustees, the Frances Foundation has personally delivered more than $600,000 in assistance during the last two years, explained Frances Foundation President Bob Heugle. “The Frances Foundation is looking forward to bringing joy, comfort and happiness to children hurting in our local hospitals on Thanksgiving, as well as holding its usual fun-filled Children’s Holiday Party. Shari LaRosa Publishes Ring Tail Raffi – Mindfulness in Madagascar Children’s Book Helps Address Anxiety in Children, Reinforces Mindfulness Skills Who did you write your book for? Shari LaRosa (SL): I wrote this book because children can learn skills through the impact of a story which allows them to connect with the message in a deeper, more meaningful way. Ring Tail Raffi is primarily written for children, introducing the main character, a lemur who is experiencing anxiety, something so prevalent right now in our society across all ages. Without giving too much of the story away, the lemur Raffi is on a life-changing journey, ultimately learning the benefits of practicing mindfulness techniques to help calm his anxiety. Why is Mindfulness important? SL: Normal life is stressful, and with the added stress of the last 19 months, there has been a great increase in anxiety and the need for taking better care of our “whole” selves. That coupled with the fact that in recent years, there has been an increase in the research between the connection of practicing mindfulness and academic success, only points to mindfulness benefiting everyone who practices it. In fact, many schools are incorporating mindfulness into their curriculums due to many positive effects shown in the mental health and well-being of children who practice these techniques. Research has shown that children engaging in mindfulness skills experience reduced stress, anxiety and reactivity. What inspired you to write Ring Tail Raffi? SL: In 2020, at the point in time I was restricted to working with clients and treating anxiety via telehealth, I was looking for a way to help out in a more macro sense. In addition, I have always had the goal of writing a children’s book since I was very young and loved art, poetry and being creative. Everything aligned after I partook in an educational interactive lemur experience and I learned about lemurs and their native habitat. This would be my future character of choice! Local author, Shari LaRosa, recently launched Ring Tail Raffi – Mindfulness in Madagascar - a purposeful rhyming story that will provide an opportunity for parents to address the topic of anxiety with their children, as well as reinforce mindfulness skills. LaRosa is a licensed clinical therapist with a private practice in Lincroft. Her additional degree in early childhood education provides LaRosa with a unique foundation for communicating well with children and having a deeper understanding of teaching and learning through adventurous fun.

An Evening with Eden Espinosa, November 13 at 8:00 pm, is the next installment of the Holmdel Theatre Company’s 2021 Broadway at the Barn series. Most recognized for her critically acclaimed portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked (Broadway, LA, and San Francisco), Broadway icon Espinosa makes her Holmdel debut in what promises to be an intimate, laid back, and playful event. Inspired by the energy of the new decade and post pandemic – Espinosa has decided to shake things up and try things she’s never done before. Espinosa will be taking requests and encouraging spontaneous moments and off-the-cuff stories. Audiences can be sure to experience something different. Featuring songs from both of her albums, Broadway songs, pop and rock covers, songs she’s never sung before and more... Eden’s show is a conversation in her living room with the added value of a concert experience. In addition to Wicked, Espinosa is also known for originating the title role in Brooklyn (Drama League Award nomination), playing Maureen in the closing Broadway cast of RENT, and playing Trina in the most recent Broadway national tour of The Falsettos. She recently originated the role of Tamara in the world premiere of Lempicka at Williamstown Theatre Festival, directed by Tony winner Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown). “I am over the moon to share such a phenomenal talent such as Eden with Holmdel audiences,” said Holmdel Theatre Company Executive Director Colleen Cook. “This evening of entertainment will be a true one-of-a-kind experience and I’m so grateful Eden has chosen Holmdel to present it.” This performance will be a live, in-person full capacity event INSIDE the Duncan Smith Theatre. Holiday Express Sunset Benefit Clambake Raises $90,000

Mother Nature once again provided Holiday Express with a picture-perfect day for the 14th annual Holiday Express Sunset Benefit Clambake on the beach at McLoone’s Pier House. The September 19 evening was a huge success thanks to generous corporate sponsors, individual supporters, and exceptional volunteers, who helped raise more than $90,000 to support the Holiday Express mission, which is to deliver music, food, gifts, financial support, and friendship to those with the greatest need for the gift of human kindness during the holiday season and throughout the year. About 300 guests were treated to an evening of ocean breezes, a brilliant moon-rise, a lavish buffet, and dancing. Live entertainment was provided by the Holiday Express Band. There was also a silent auction that was a success thanks to the generous donations of many local businesses. This year Holiday Express will be visiting 100 locations during the holiday season with a mix of live and virtual performances. Proceeds from the Clambake will improve the quality of life for the 27,000 adults and children being served by Holiday Express during the 2021 holiday season. Holiday Express visits the mentally and physically challenged, the isolated, individuals in addiction and recovery programs, the poor and the homeless and children with serious illnesses. Established by Tim McLoone in 1993, Holiday Express is a non-profit organization comprised of 2,500 volunteers, including 150 professional rock, jazz, folk, gospel, and pop musicians. On October 19, Colts Neck Business Association (CNBA) hosted its 12th annual Pig Roast at Huddy’s Inn. Community and business members came dressed in their cowboy hats, boots, and fall flannels. With more than 100 people in attendance, live music, and a ton of delicious food it was the perfect fall evening to celebrate Colts Neck business. “It’s great to see the community coming together and enjoying each other’s company!” said Dino Nicoletta, President of the CNBA.
