RANNEY SCHOOL TINTON FALLS, NJ
In 1963, Andy Williams first sang his famous Christmas
song, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” – and I couldn’t agree with him more over 50 years later. The excitement of this season can’t be denied, I absolutely love hunting for the perfect Christmas tree and decorating my house obnoxiously – inside and out – something Clark Griswold would be proud of. And when all that is set up, the best part for me is spending time with my family and friends. The traditions still remain - everyone heads to my parent’s house; the kids anxiously wait for all their aunts, uncles and cousins to arrive (Holiday Rule #1: everyone has to be present before any gift is opened); myself and mom running around making sure all the food is prepped and appetizers are out; a few laughs and some debates may ensue; our neighbors we grew up with will stop by (since they are visiting their parents);C “A Christmas Story” is definitely on one of the TV’s (gotta loveM the leg lamp); and then a feast to feed an army is served with tooY much dessert to follow. There is so much more that happens, but I am sure you get the point – chaos and pure happiness.

ANIMAL ADVOCACY: Holiday Shoppers Beware PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN NJ State Director | The Humane Society of the United States

any Americans reject animal fur apparel and accessories, knowing of the exposés that have documented inhumane conditions of raccoon dogs, mink, and foxes in tiny wire cages, and bobcats, coyotes, and domestic dogs caught and killed in indiscriminate steel traps set on our public lands. But even consumers who seek to make the more compassionate choice of faux fur may find themselves being duped by unscrupulous or negligent manufacturers and retailers, including some of the biggest names in fashion.
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Holmdel/Colts Neck COLLECTS “TOYS FOR TOTS” & THE FOODBANK
6
Year after year, The HSUS has exposed retailers selling real animal fur – from rabbits, raccoon dogs and others – as “faux fur.” We even recently found domestic dog fur for sale by a New York retailer. Persistent misrepresentation of animal fur led to the passage of fur labeling laws in New Jersey and New York, and the passage of the federal Truth in Fur Labeling Act.
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in
In 2013, the Federal Trade Commission handed down an enforcement action against major retailers, including Neiman Marcus, for selling animal fur as faux. Thumbing its nose at the public and the FTC however, Neiman Marcus was found selling animal fur as “faux” again, in late 2014 and early 2015, even after the FTC ordered the company to stop the misrepresentation.
8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays
Other companies the HSUS has discovered selling animal fur as fake fur in the last several years include Kohl’s, DrJays.com, Amazon.com, and NYC-area retailer Century 21. With numerous retailers being named in HSUS petitions filed before the FTC and national news outlets giving these stories in-depth coverage, and with cruelty and death to wildlife and pets so well known, one has to wonder why retailers refuse to drop animal fur, and implement more robust quality control programs.
Holmdel/Colts Neck is hosting a Toys for Tots collection now through December 11,
2015. New, unwrapped toys and games can be dropped off Monday through Friday from
and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage office lobby, which is located at 998 Holmdel Road in Holmdel.
Additionally, the office is a drop off site for The FOODBANK of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

As compassionate consumers, we deserve not to have our strong moral positions undermined by false advertising and labeling, and to have our consumer protection laws fully enforced. Until that time, let the buyer beware – and double check the “faux” fur.

Luckily, there are a few techniques that consumers can use to determine whether the fur on a product is from an animal, or fake. First, push the hairs apart and look at the material from which they emerge: animal hairs grow out of skin, whereas the base of fake fur is a grid or mesh of threadwork. Second, look at the tips of individual hairs: unless they have been sheared off, animal hairs will taper to a point like a sewing needle or sharpened pencil. The tips of fake fur fibers are cut straight across. Finally, if you already own the item, and are a very careful adult, you can pluck a few of the hairs, and holding them in tweezers away from anything flammable (including the item itself), ignite them with a cigarette lighter: animal hair has a very distinct smell when burning (which you will recognize if you’ve ever used a hot hair iron or blow dryer), whereas fake fur will smell quite different, depending on the type of plastic it’s made from.

Jumpers Leap at Opportunity to Support Trampoline Park’s Thanksgiving Food Drive Air Trampoline Sports Aberdeen and their guests made sure families were full for Thanksgiving
Justin Stone (left) of Air Trampoline dropped off over 400+ pounds of donated food on November 21, 2015 to Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry from the Thanksgiving Food Drive held at the Aberdeen trampoline park. Natalie Smith of Keyport, a volunteer, accepted the donation on behalf of the pantry. PATRONS TO A trampoline park in Aberdeen came in with more than an urge to elevate, they jumped at the chance to donate to the park’s inaugural Thanksgiving food drive. Air Trampoline Sports held its drive through the first three weeks of November, collecting donations on behalf of the Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry. Ken Stone, owner of Air Trampoline Sports, was in the giving spirit as well, offering a $2 discount to park admission for patrons who donated to the drive. “We had an incredible turnout,” remarked Mr. Stone. “It was warming to see our jumpers give the amount of food they did. We offered incentive to donate at least one item because every contribution helps. Our jumpers could’ve gotten reduced admission for giving a single can of corn, but they came in carrying bags full of food.” The Keyport Food Pantry holds a Thanksgiving Food Drive

at the start of every fall, distributing the collected non-perishable food items - along with turkeys - to disadvantaged families in the area. “The Pantry and the families receiving the donated food really have our jumpers to thank. Sure, we put a collection box in our lobby and offered a discount to donors, but our jumpers are the ones who made this possible.” Air Trampoline Sports has recently enjoyed organizing a number of philanthropic efforts, giving discounts to donors to their Back to School Supply Drive, and promoting Childhood Obesity Awareness Month through September. The trampoline park also has a Good Grades program, offering reduced admission for students who come in and show A or B marks on their report cards. Air Trampoline Sports donated $400 to Breast Intentions, a local charitable fundraising organization supporting cancer patients and survivors, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The trampoline park also gave back to the men, women and family of the armed forces with Military Families Week in light of Veteran’s Day, offering a 25% discount to family admission along with complimentary ice cream. “We make it a point here to give back,” said Mr. Stone. “I believe businesses have the potential to make positive changes in their communities. We’re taking it upon ourselves to do so and lead by example.” Air Trampoline Sports must be doing something right, because in November, a young boy celebrating his tenth birthday at the trampoline park decided to donate all his presents to charity. “Although we set the precedent to be philanthropic, what’s truly inspiring is seeing how active our jumpers are in giving back,” said Mr. Stone. Country Western Dance
Fundraiser a Success For The Colts Neck Lions PHOTOS JOSHUA REICH ON NOVEMBER 14, 2015, the Colts Neck Recreation Center at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck, was once again the setting for one of the community’s most enjoyable events of the year – a Country Western Dance sponsored by the Colts Neck Lions Club and the Fireside Grill of Marlboro. The Lions hosted another one in April of this year and received a strong interest to do it again in the fall. And so they did. Returning to provide the music was the Tom Baz and the Bullzeye Band. The line dancers did not waste any time generating energy on the dance floor as they kicked up their boots to one great song after another. New additions to this event were a big bon fire and a mechanical bull. The bon fire provided a comforting warmth to the folks who wanted a little night air while the mechanical bull offered a challenge to all the thrill seekers. The Fireside Grill provided a delicious meal for everyone and the Lions made sure no one went home hungry or thirsty – maybe a little tired. The evening was a big hit as a fundraising event for the Colts Neck Lions Club and they will plan to host another Country Western Dance next year. The Lions hope the word about the dance will continue to spread and bring more people out to this community-building social event. The proceeds for this event will go to the various charities that the Colts Neck Lions Club supports.

A CHILD BORN when the mother is married or within 300 days of the end of the marriage (either by death or divorce) is presumed to be the child of the husband. The presumption can be challenged, but the challenger must prove that he is not the father by clear and convincing evidence. A child born to an unmarried woman enjoys no such presumption. In those cases any man who had sexual intercourse with the mother within 300 days of the child’s birth may find himself in a paternity action. In cases to establish paternity and in cases in which a husband disputes paternity, science comes into play. The science of paternity has gone from very rudimentary to quite sophisticated during the past two hundred years. In the 1800s eye color was used as a form of paternity testing. The paternity of a child whose eye color differed from the father’s was questioned. This was obviously not a very reliable indicator. By the 1920s blood type testing became the scientific norm. Geneticists had discovered
that blood types were inherited. Thus, a man whose blood type was not consistent with the child’s was eliminated as the father. A blood type consistent with the child’s, however, did not establish his paternity. It simply did not eliminate him. In the 1970s, HLA testing became the gold standard. This test, which compared proteins in the blood, was much more accurate in eliminating possible fathers. It often produced probabilities of between 80% and 90% that a man was not the father. Conversely, a man not eliminated was, to an 80% to 90% probability, the likely father. Because this test required large blood samples, testing small children and babies was problematic. This often required delaying the test until the child was two years or older. DNA testing is now the scientific norm. It requires specimens that are collected painlessly with a swab. Results are produced more quickly and they are far more accurate. They often exceed 99%. Since genetic material can be collected in so many ways, a small amount of amniotic f luid can be used to

test for paternity even before the child is born. DNA test results are so accurate that, unless the test was improperly administered or a stand-in provided the sample, they are virtually impossible to refute. DNA testing can sometimes yield unexpected results. In a child support case in Passaic County earlier this year, DNA testing revealed that the father of one twin was not the father of the other. The exceedingly fertile mother gave birth to twin girls of different fathers with whom she had had intercourse in the same week. He only had to pay child support for one. The paternity of the other twin is still not established. Science and law are inextricably related. As science advances, the law must change. This is one area in which the law has kept pace with science.

Dr. Julia Cintron with the 208 pounds of candy that were donated by 28 children through the Halloween Candy Buy Back program at Newman Springs Dental Care in Lincroft. IT’S RARE THAT CHILDREN would let their dentist see them with their arms full of candy. But youngsters lined up on November 2 at Newman Springs Dental Care carrying sugary treats in boxes and bags. To help prevent cavities and other unpleasantries associated with excess sugar consumption, the dental office offered its 5th annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, a few days after “trick or treat” day. Children brought their excess spoils in exchange for $1 per pound turned in, flashing toothbrushes and snacks. “All collected candy was boxed up and sent to troops overseas,” said Dr. Julia Cintron. The children also wrote letters to the soldiers to include with the packages. “Most youngsters were willing to part with their candy, with some even turning down the money.” The event yielded 208 pounds of candy. Ronnie Miccuilla of American Recreational Military Services (ARMS.org) will make sure that the candy gets to our troops in individualized packages. The employees of this Lincroft practice donated toothbrushes and floss so the candy could be enjoyed without guilt. The event was cosponsored by Comcast Spotlight.

WWE® Hall of Famer Ric Flair & WWE® Diva Charlotte TO APPEAR AT IPLAY AMERICA FOR MEET & GREET WITH FANS DECEMBER 18
MEMBERS OF THE “WOOOOOOOO!” Nation and hardcore WWE® fans must not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to meet the original, the unmistakable, the legendary 16time World Champion and Hall of Famer, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair! Lightning does strike twice as Ric appears alongside his incredible daughter, up-and-coming WWE Diva Charlotte, at 6:00 p.m. on December 18 at iPlay America. “Ric Flair is considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. He is full of charisma and charm,” said iPlay America Director of Marketing Jessica Schwartz. “He is the embodiment of energy and excellence — exactly the atmosphere of iPlay America.” Ric Flair is the most decorated World Champion in history. His robe, trunks, and boots worn at Wrestlemania XXIV are permanently exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington DC. Flair has never strayed from being “The Man” who most young sports-entertainers — WWE Superstars included — idolize. Flair, whose body has been insured by Lloyd’s of London, made his name by wrestling hour-long marathon matches. Taking part in two influential and historical wrestling factions, The Four Horsemen and Evolution, “Slick Ric” maintains that the party he started four decades ago is far from over. He is as important and vital today as when he began his career in the ‘70s! Joining the legendary Ric Flair at iPlay America is a name to be reckoned with in the wrestling industry! Charlotte has already made a name for herself in the WWE. She first captured the attention of the NXT Universe with her intense level of athleticism during her July 2015 debut as a full-time Diva in the WWE, when she joined forces with Paige and Becky Lynch to form PCB. Ric Flair has always known who he is — “a Limousine-ridin’, Jet-flyin’, Kiss-stealin’, Wheelin’-dealin’, Son-of-a-Gun.” Now iPlay America gives fans the chance to get to know him even better!

TROOP 601 OF LINCROFT HELD BRIDGING CEREMONY Most locals cross the bridge in Thompson Park by bike, running or walking on their exercise routines, or even bringing the pooch out for some fresh air - but on a recent fall day, this part of the trail was instrumental in Troop 601 of Lincroft’s “Bridging Ceremony”. The girls, all from Lincroft and in the fourth grade, walked over the bridge to symbolize the crossing of one level of Girls Scouts to another and removed their Brownie vest and received a Junior Sash. Troop 601 of Lincroft members are Lillian Becker, Megan Molloy, Reilly Feder, Stephanie Percello, Morgan Tashjian, Mia Maiorano, Jennifer Schuster, Maddie Hussey, Kylie Ryser, Isabella Funari, Sabrina Kirk, Julia Costello, Jullianna Hooks, Kelly Todhunter, Sophia Quintano and Piper Wyman. Troop 601 is led by Kelly Becker and Shannon Molloy. Most of the girls have been in the Troop since the Daisy Level and a few are new to this year. Along with having fun, doing crafts and going on trips, the girls are very active in the community. They focus on giving back, they have collected donations for the Popcorn Zoo, brought meals to Lunch Break during the Holiday season, and have written letters of appreciation and encouragement to the Troops - along with making care packages to be sent to them for the holidays.

LINCROFT FIRE COMPANY LADIES AUXILIARY HI-LO GAME A SUCCESS S T ORY S U S A N M U R P H Y
Every fall and spring the Ladies Auxiliary holds a Hi-Lo card game fundraiser that in turn helps out the firefighters of the Lincroft Fire Company Station 10. This year, approximately 45 guests attended the Hi-Lo game on November 13, 2015 at the firehouse. Ladies Auxiliary President Bridget Matthews said, “I am thankful to all who showed up to support us. Men and women attended and everyone had a great time. The Hi-Lo wouldn’t be a success without the help of the local businesses and the support of the people in our community. The funds raised will be used to help with social functions for the Ladies Auxiliary and the firemen, and to purchase items needed by the men.” Prizes donated by local businesses included gift certificates for food, a florist donation, jewelry, childrens’ baskets, mens’ baskets, some holiday items, and lottery tickets. There were 36 baskets in all. The 50/50 came to $200. The guests enjoyed socializing, snacking, and winning great prizes.

Holmdel First Aid Squad Explorers Hosted 3rd Annual
R I G OR TR E A T CELEBRATIO N P H OTO S J O S H U A R E I C H
ON OCTOBER 31ST, APPROXIMATELY 400 AREA RESIDENTS were able to attend the 3rd annual “Rig or Treat” and Blood Drive at the Holmdel First Aid Squad building, an event made possible by its members, but run by the high school student volunteers of the Holmdel First Aid Squad Explorer Program. There were a number of activities for children, including: Holmdel First Aid’s new Ford F-450 Super Duty Horton 4x4 ambulance tours, basic first aid techniques, mummy wrapping, Nerf Gun archery, arts & crafts, a kid appropriate “morgue” and so much more! Christopher Trischitta, Captain of Holmdel First Aid and Explorer Program Coordinator and Advisor, explained how he got the idea for “Rig-or-Treat”. “While attending Rutgers University, I was part of a group known as Recreation Activities Crew, which every year put on an event called “Special Friends Day” where 100 children with various disabilities are

paired up with 200 volunteer Rutgers University students and spend the day with their buddies. Their recreation center is transformed into a fun-themed playroom where the buddies can play various games and activities throughout the entire building. I wanted to bring my experiences from Rutgers back to my hometown of Holmdel to organize a themed event for all the children in our area, utilizing the 30 volunteer high school students of Holmdel First Aid Explorer Program,” said Trischitta. Mr. Trischitta also wanted to give a special thanks to the dedicated Life & Active Members of the Holmdel First Aid Squad that were behind the scenes making this event possible. The Holmdel First Aid Explorer Program provides 30 carefully selected high school students with the opportunity to give back to their community by allowing them to aid township residents during any situation

in the township that requires emergency medical services. They are each chosen to be a part of this elite group of high school students because they demonstrate number of qualities of an effective first responder. They respond to several different emergency situations alongside the adult EMTs, including bleeding control, heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and traumatic injuries caused by falls and motor vehicle collisions. They are assigned to a four-hour duty time in which they stay at the squad building. Parent Social Chair Tara Buss brought back the popular tasting format of the evening. “We were excited to host this event again. It’s such a great atmosphere for people to mix and mingle and just have a good time,” explained Buss. “We were thrilled to have so many new faces join us for the party this year.” Buss worked with Neil Patel, owner of Colts Neck Wine and Liquor, to bring the event together. Patel sourced the various vendors, who offered over 100 different beverages to sample. Each guest received a tasting glass to sample the variety of beverages and a souvenir Octoberfest bottle opener, courtesy of Oxford Insurance Brokers. The Itch, a popular local cover band, donated their talents to entertain the crowd. “The Itch really made this party rock,” said Buss. “We were so excited and grateful to have them back with us again.” The band features Colts Neck’s own Jeff Mundy on bass and Michael Pisani on vocals/guitar, joined by Greg Messina on vocals/ keyboard, Scott Borbely on lead guitar, and Jeff Amorosi on drums. Bucks Mill Community Center was dressed up for the event with beautiful seasonal florals by Greenhouse Gallery Florist and fall harvest décor from Slopebrook Farm. Event lighting, courtesy of Raymond Raya, Esq. through “Lighting the Shows,” and cocktail tables donated by the Benevento Family created a party ambiance. In addition to the tasting, the evening featured appetizers and a buffet dinner by Livotti’s Old World Market, a popcorn bar donated by the Panico family, and sweet treats by Abbate Bakery of Matawan, Chef Steph of Colts Neck and Sempre Cannoli of Red Bank. Guests could participate in a cork pull raffle to win some spirits to take home. Janine Pinguelo of Colts Neck won the beautiful wine glasses and cheese platter gift basket donated by Folio Art Glass and the Willis family won the 50/50 raffle. “We are so grateful to our chair Tara Buss for her tireless efforts for making this evening such a success year after year,” said PTO President Justine Buzzetta. “She knows how to throw a party.” Buss was joined by a dedicated committee of volunteers including Carrie Benevento, Elizabeth Besculides, Victoria Cantalupo, Marian Castner, Stephanie Collura, Danielle Gibson, Tracy Hagger, Marci Klein, Nancy Loureiro, Jessica Mangold, Virginia Marshall, Jennifer Mayrose, Katie Weiss, Nancy Morin, January Nicoletta, Sheila Olt, Courtney McCormick, Colleen Panico, Patricia Pecoraro, Sarah Pisani, Colleen Procyk, and Patricia Ronca. Buzzetta also recognized the generosity of Abbate Bakery, the Benevento family, Chef Steph, Colts Neck Greenhouse Gallery Florist, Colts Neck Wine & Liquor, Folio Art Glass, The Itch Band, Oxford Insurance Brokers, the Panico family, Raymond Raya, Esq., Sempre Cannoli, Slopebrook Farm, and all the families that donated items and supplies to event. “We are so appreciative of the many Colts Neck businesses that partner with us on this event,” added Buss. “We love events that bring our community together.”

this season in the finals. On October 29, the Oak Hill Academy Mustang girls’ soccer team came into the MCISSL Liberty Conference finals at Cross Farms Park in Holmdel. In the finals, Oak Hill played a previously undefeated Shrewsbury team, and went up 1-0 on a goal by the team “Jim Carrigan MVP” and 8th grade All-Star, Abigail Cieri in the 8th minute. 6th grader Brooke Tackett put them up 2-0 on a terrific cross from 8th grade winger, Alexa Kulawiak ten minutes later. This turned out to be the game-winner as Shrewsbury was able to score once in the second half, but OHA’s defense led by 8th grade MCISSL All-Star, Erin Gilfillan, played tough to preserve the girls’ first title since 1991! It was a tremendous season by all members of the teams. Each girl played a role in the 9-1 season, and it was a storybook ending for the 8th graders who have worked so hard for four years. The boys’ team played St. James following the girls’ game. After a slow start and going down 5-0, the boys team lead by “Richard Hartman Sportsmanship” award winner, Christopher Misson (two goals), and a goal from 8th grader, Ethan Ferraiola, battled back to make it 5-3 before they ran out of time. Despite losing in the final, the boys showed that “never say die” attitude and finished a fantastic season with an 8-2 record and as Liberty “F” Conference Champions and Runner-up for the overall Liberty Conference title.

Colts Neck Lions Club held its annual Pancake Breakfast on October 24, 2015 at Colts Neck Reformed Church. This was the twentieth year for the event, according to Event Chair Dave Heck. The Lions serve about 350 to 400 breakfasts during their four-hour event. “This is a great event for us and a great time for the community to come together,” said Heck. He added that the Lions Club helps out local charities throughout the year with
the funds raised at this and other events. Heck also noted that the Lions would like the community to associate certain annual events with their organization, such as the Pancake Breakfast, the Kentucky Derby & Wine Tasting, and the newest event, a Country & Western Dance. With the admission fee for the breakfast, each person received a ticket for a raff le that included great gift items donated by local businesses. Heck mentioned that some of the
sponsors who generously donated to the Pancake Breakfast were Dunkin’ Donuts, Saker ShopRite, Colts Neck Perkins Restaurant, the Fireside Grill & Bar, as well as Tom Orgo and Ed Brock. Guests were also able to have a free glucose screening by Stewart Snyder who is affiliated with CentraState Hospital. A delicious breakfast of eggs, sausage, donuts, and blueberry, chocolate chip or plain pancakes was available.

The book also has a good underlying moral tone where the main character, Smitty, learns valuable life's lessons as he journeys through his cave adventures. At the young age of 83, Barbara lives at the beautiful assisted living center, The Solona in Marlboro, and is not slowing down. Barbara has always been very active and involved with her eight grandchildren, often reciting stories that she has made up. With encouragement from them, Barbara put her pen to paper and created a wonderful childrens-young adult, fictional action-adventure that has been published entitled, Smitty's Cave Adventures. Robotics Students GEAR UP FOR 2 0 1 5 -1 6 S E AS O N COMPETITIONS ROBOTICS HAS BECOME a regular part
of student life at Ranney School in Tinton Falls. The independent school’s robotics program began in 2010, and participating students have already qualified for and attended three VEX World Championships. In fact, Ranney students and teams hold multiple state, national and world records in robotics programming and driving, including the 2014 VEX Robotics Create U.S. Open Championship and the 2015 New Jersey State VEX Robotics Championship. Since 2014, students as young as age 9 (fourth grade) have been able to take Robotics electives as part of the school’s curriculum, and both elementary and middle schoolers regularly compete at the state and regional level. Nearly 100 students across the school are actively engaged in the program. Students engage in coding, engineering and program-
ming VEX and VEX IQ robots through courses, activity periods and after-school clubs. As a partner with Garden State Robotics—New Jersey’s VEX event manager, Ranney School hosted a VEX IQ competition for students in grades 5-8 across the state on November 14 (our elementary team came in 1st, qualifying for states, and our middle school team earned a 3rd place) and will host a high school competition on January 16, 2016. In December, the younger division will take part in the state tournament. During these events, teams participate in multiple skill challenges, such as the “Bank Shot.” In this particular challenge, students must program and drive their robots to drop as many as 44 balls into a score zone. The competition field includes a ramp and slots to catch the balls, making maneuvering more difficult. Students spend between 8 and 20 hours a month, depending on their grade level, working on and with their robots.
“In addition to gaining a valuable experience in team-building and strategy, our students are growing core engineering, computer science, problem-solving and mathematics skills that they can apply to their everyday coursework and future careers,” says Robotics Advisor Chiara Shah. The school plans to host a robotics demonstration at its January 23, 2016 Open House (view details at www.ranneyschool.org/visitus) and is also collaborating with the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore to hold a robotics workshop for young girls interested in coding and robotics in March 2016. Ranney’s Upper School students take pride in lending their expertise to younger robotics students by serving as mentors as well as event referees and scoring volunteers. Learn more at www.ranneyschool.org/ robotics.
St. Mary’s Martha Mary Guild to Host a Special Christmas Program
ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, St. Mary’s Martha Mary Guild will be holding a special Christmas meeting with a heartwarming program to be presented by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties (BBBSMMC). The mission of BBBSMMC is “to provide children facing adversity with strong, enduring and professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better forever”. It’s a donor supported, volunteer agency
48
that is currently serving over 650 children and is funded through individual gifts, grants and special events. Unfortunately, 40 children, mostly boys, are waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. Perhaps there is someone out there who may be interested in performing this beautiful outreach. Marybeth Bull, Director of Development for BBBMMC, presenter, will include a video entitled “The Big Impact”, which will most certainly impact its viewers. Another very moving moment will be the testimonial of a Big Sister and Little Sister. (Bring your tissues!) There will be a Christmas box for interested attendees to donate $15 to $25

gift cards to restaurants, clothing & toy stores, bowling alleys, indoor amusement parks, movie theaters, craft shops, etc. for BBBSMMC. This is in addition to the Guild’s annual Christmas collection of baby clothes (0-18 months), towels, crib sheets (no blankets) and diapers (up to size 4 – no size 2 needed) for Birthright of Red Bank. Embracing the Christmas spirit of charitable giving, members may choose to donate to either one or both deserving organizations. Join us in St. Mary’s Spiritual Center Chapel at 7:00 p.m. for the rosary, followed by delicious holiday desserts and this wonderful Christmas program in Madonna Hall.

Village School’s 2nd Annual “Not So Scary” Trunk or Treat
The Sottile Family trunk
The Rodgers Family trunk
The Smigelsky Family trunk
CHILDREN OF HOLMDEL were provided an opportunity to begin their trick or treating early on Halloween by visiting the second annual "Not So Scary" Trunk or Treat hosted by the Village School PSA. The Village School parking lot in Holmdel was filled with vehicles that were decorated in various themes to provide children with a spooktacular experience. Parents volunteered to transform their minivans and SUVs into “front porches” for the children to visit on Halloween morning to pick up candy, treats and
toys. The first trunk children visited was reminiscent of the “Little Mermaid’s Grotto” to pick up an under the sea treat, followed by many festive trunks that celebrated the Halloween holiday, including a minivan disguised as a mummy. Children also were able to pick up treats at trunks decked out as Disney World, Star Wars, the mines of the Seven Dwarfs, the Bat Cave – one trunk even featured the stars from the new movie Inside Out! Leslie Marotta organized the event on behalf of the Village School PSA. She noted that while the event is great for
the kids, “the parents end up having just as much fun by decorating their trunks.” When children were done with their trunk or treating, they were provided an opportunity to vote for their favorite trunk. The winners were the Sottile Family, the Rodgers Family and the Smigelsky Family. More than 275 children attended this event, which allowed Holmdel residents a brief reprieve before the kids returned to their neighbors to begin their trick or treating.

dance on a Wednesday night, many families came together to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Ron Wiley said, “As an Air Force veteran 19601964 I was appreciative of the blessings given me and my wife and daughter by the members of Colts Neck Community Church at the Veteran’s Day dinner and celebration.” The Chorus of the Atlantic, a barbershop harmony group, sang patriotic songs beautifully and with lots of energy. There was also a humorous and uplifting message given from a fellow veteran representing the organization “Hearts for Heroes.” Colts Neck Mayor Jim Schatzle and Captain Jay Steingold, Commander of Naval Base Earle, were in attendance. Colts Neck Community Church Pastor Chris Durkin told the assembly, “The Bible says ‘Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:13).’ Thank you for your willingness to lay down your life for your country.” Pastor Chris Durkin added, “Although one night will never be enough to thank these men and women, we pray that it was enough to show them that we appreciate them and that their service will never be in vain.”

On September 22, 2015, Andrew Guaragno achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Andrew, of Holmdel Troop 331, was introduced to Scouting at the tender age of 4 ½, when his older brother joined Cub Scouts, and it was love at first sight. HE LOVED EVERYTHING he saw: the uniforms, the patch-

es, the special guests at the Pack meetings, the outings and camping trips, and perhaps most of all, the Pinewood Derby and Raingutter Regatta trophies. When the day finally came that Andrew could put on his very own Scout uniform, he was thrilled and so proud. At this point, Andrew had no idea where the Scouting Trail would lead, but he was excited to get started. With his dad as cubmaster and his mom as den leader and committee chair, Andrew was a very active Cub Scout, participating in each and every Pack and Den activity. His favorites were camping, snowboarding, Summer Camp at Quail Hill, hosting Donut Sundays at St. Catharine’s, and building and racing winning Pinewood Derby cars and Raingutter Regatta boats. Andrew also discovered a talent for tying knots and soon impressed everyone with his Turk’s Head knots,
also known as Woggles. In 5th grade, Andrew earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award bestowed upon a Cub Scout, and he crossed over into Boy Scout Troop 331. Andrew could now hear the Eagle trail beckoning. Andrew’s first year as a Boy Scout was filled with rank advancement, merit badges, and fun adventures. History has a way of repeating itself, and Dad was now Scoutmaster, while Mom became the Chartered Organization Representative. Declaring that he would earn Eagle earlier than his brother did, Andrew set out on the Eagle Trail in earnest. He served as Patrol Leader for Kamo, but soon discovered he could put his computer skills to good use as a member of the Website Team. He took the leadership position of Scribe, where he creates and manages Eventbrite sites for the Troop. Andrew earned 31 merit badges, has done countless hours of community service (really, we lost count!), and participated in just about every Troop activity offered. Some of his favorites are climbing and zip lining at Adirondack Extreme, kayaking, white water rafting, camping, and snowboarding. Andrew’s still tying Woggles, and he presents one to every Webelo II who crosses over into our Troop.
Wishing you the Joy of Family, the Happiness of Friends, and the Wonder of the Holiday Season. ss
House of the Month
For his Eagle project, Andrew led a group in designing, building, and installing a Little Free Library for Lunch Break in Red Bank. To pay for the building materials, Andrew ran a very successful car wash. He used extra money from his fundraiser to purchase Spanish adult and children’s books to fill the library. Andrew’s Little Free Library has been very well received by the community, and it has put books, free of charge, into the hands of many citizens who, otherwise, may not have access to them. Feel free to stop by, browse a little, and take a book or leave a book. Andrew is an 8th grade honor student at the W R Satz School, where he volunteers as a Tech Helper. He was a member of the Satz Cross Country team last year, participates in Shot Put and Long Jump events in Winter Track, and is on the Satz Track and Field team, participating in the Discus, Shot Put, and Long Jump events. Andrew loves volleyball and has been playing competitively for four years. He’s currently a member of the Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club team. He plans to continue on the Scouting Trail by heading to Philmont in 2016, the National Scout Jamboree in 2017, and being a Counsellor in Training at Forestburg Scout Reservation this coming summer, with plans to work as a Camp Counsellor in future years. By passing his Eagle Board of Review in September, Andrew did, in fact, achieve his goal of earning Eagle earlier than his brother!

Colts Neck Trunk or Treat a Spooktacular Success! GHOSTS AND GOBLINS of all ages came out on a beautiful Halloween day for a fun-filled Trunk or Treat at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. The Colts Neck PTO and Sports Foundation teamed up to host the safe and free trick-or-treating event for the children of the community. Cars were decorated in a variety of themes ranging from Despicable Me and The Incredibles, to the more traditional spooky Halloween décor. Over two dozen families handed out candy to the nearly two hundred children who came out for treats. Joining in on the fun
were members of the Colts Neck Police Department, who assisted with the safety and security of the event, as well as handing out some treats of their own. In addition to all of the candy being distributed, the PTO and Sports Foundation offered cider, hot chocolate and cookies to those coming out for the festivities. The fun-filled community event was organized by Maria Thompson of the Colts Neck Sports Foundation and Justine Buzzetta of the PTO. “Everyone did such and amazing job of decorating their trunks and getting into
the spirit that we had a hard time selecting the best one,” explained Buzzetta. Several families were recognized for their creative and festive trunks. Winners included the Adamcyzk family, Agliata family, Panico family, Rizzuto family, and Willis family. The PTO and Sports Foundation would like to thank Delicious Orchards, Asbury Circle Car Wash, and the Pizza and Pasta Factory of Marlboro for their generous support of the event.

Teens for Israel at Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel OUR BRETHREN IN ISRAEL are currently going through a difficult time—attacks are taking place daily in all cities across Israel. Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel has partnered with an organization in Israel, which helps victims of terror as well as wounded soldiers and soldiers on the front lines. The local teens got together and enjoyed an Israeli style dinner while discussing and learning about The Holy Land. Teens also wrote letters to the brave soldiers and created Prayer Tags (Dog Tags) for each soldier to wear while they recovered. The prayer also asks G-D to keep them safe when they return to their units. Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel launched a new program this year called

Once upon a Christmastime, there was a magical place, not very far, where you could see Christmas lights - maybe even a star! A magnificent house with dazzling lights that sparkle and twinkle all through the nights. A fairytale for all, a time you will recall, with memories to share through the year! So, get ready for those nights, when the Gress House is bright, raising money for charity again this year! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls - the Gress Family of Union Beach, once again invites you to celebrate the magic, wonder and excitement of the holiday season with their 6th annual Holiday Light Spectacular benefitting the Children’s Miracle Network of Mountainside, New Jersey. Join everyone from around the Bayshore at 14 Johnson Avenue (off of Broadway) in Union Beach every night from now through early January from dusk to 12:00 midnight, as they celebrate the season in style, including thousands of festive lights, holiday figures, dazzling special effects, music, and complimentary candy canes!
In October, several of the Colts Neck Senior Citizens enjoyed an educational and fun trip to Scranton, PA, the urban and cultural center of Northeastern PA. The industrial boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought about a thriving Scranton, which includes attractions like The Electric City Trolley Station & Museum, The Anthracite Coal Museum, Lackawanna County Coal Mines and the Houdini Museum. Along with visiting these interesting sites, a train ride was enjoyed by all.
Once again, The Gress’ will be raising money for the Mountainside chapter of the Children’s Miracle Network through their “Decorations for Donations” program. Cash donations and/or checks made payable to the Children’s Miracle Network are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off in the Santa train donation box alongside the family mailbox. Last year, through the generous donations given, they raised a little over $4,000! It is their hope, this year, to raise the same, if not more for this wonderful cause. Also, back by popular demand, the Gress House will partner with My Fairytale Dream character entertainment company to bring some of your favorite characters to visit select nights in December for The Gress’ Very Merry Christmas Block Parties. Check out, and be sure to “Like” “The Gress House Holiday Light Spectacular” on Facebook for character show times and appearances through the winter months. You’ll also find festive pictures, updates, and other holiday happenings on their page. As a reminder, during nights of inclement or wet weather conditions, the display may not be lit. The display is meant to be seen up close, so feel free to take as many pictures as you would like and walk around their yard. However, as a courtesy to the neighbors, please do not park in front of their driveways or walk on their properties. The Gress Family looks forward to seeing everyone and wishes you the “brightest” holiday greetings from their overly decorated home to yours!
If you are a Colts Neck resident, age 55 or over, you too can enjoy days like this by joining this vital organization. For more information, call President John Walsh at 732.946.0591.

A GLIMPSE OF LI V ING W ELL Gloria Nilson & Co. Event Offers Interested Buyers a Preview of Luxury Living on Colts Neck Equestrian Estate
More than 150 VIP guests turned out in Colts Neck, N.J., on November 8 for an exclusive preview of Grey Oaks, a 45-acre equestrian estate in Farmland Preservation located at 45 Cross Road, hosted by Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate. After passing through the property’s wrought iron gates and its idyllic tree-lined driveway, guests were welcomed by several newmodel luxury vehicles on display in the circular driveway from Contemporary Motors in Shrewsbury. Exclusive art pieces were on loan from Beauregard Fine Art in Rumson. The wine was provided by Grapes N’ Barrels in Sayreville. The reception hall, with its grand open staircase and marble f loors, welcomed visitors to the 10,000 square foot, three-story colonial listed by Gloria Nilson & Co. for $9.9 million. Tours of the grand ballroom and stately dining room featuring hardwood f loors, soaring coffered ceilings and hand carved marble fireplaces seemed most popular among those in attendance. The home also features an estatequality bar, family room and ample-sized breakfast room. The staff ’s kitchen has workspace adjacent to rear stairs leading to the staff ’s quarters. Realtors from Gloria Nilson & Co. were on hand throughout the entire property to guide visitors to key experience destinations on the property, including the spacious master bedroom with
its eye-catching fireplace, and a large walk-in closet and marble bath with whirlpool tub that completes the modern luxury of the master suite. Eight additional bedrooms and four additional full baths and two partial baths were just some of the home’s remarkable attractions. “Only a garden party or VIP preview event can offer one the opportunity to fully appreciate the beauty and character of Grey Oaks,” explained Donna Bennett, a sales associate with Gloria Nilson & Co. and the listing agent for the property. “Attending the event, seeing the art work and luxury vehicles offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of living and entertaining on an estate property. It allows interested buyers to more completely imagine life at Grey Oaks, and the feedback from prospective buyers as well as other real estate brokers has been tremendous.” The estate also boasts a 75-foot concrete pool with pool house, tennis court, eight-stall barn with f ly misting system, riding arena and jumping area. A caretaker’s cottage is also located on the property as well as a separate 3,000 square foot guest residence. For more information or listing price inquiries about the property contact Donna Bennett at dbennett@glorianilson.com or 908.770.3516. Gloria Nilson & Co., Holmdel Office, 732.946.3200.
Homeless Dogs Looking for their Forever Family Below are some of the many animals that need to find their forever home from Castle of Dreams. SPENCER Spencer is a super sweet 30 pound, six-month-old boxer mix. He is up to date on shots, micro-chipped and neutered. He is a total love bug and loves to cuddle. He walks great on a leash but can get startled at loud noises. Spencer LOVES to play and loves being outside. He is well-behaved overall, but still a puppy so he needs some training. He is dog friendly, but is a bit submissive with bigger dogs until he is comfortable. He is not a fan of the crate but will tolerate a crate for short periods. His house training is going well, he is a smart boy and already knows the “sit” command. He is good with kids, but he can jump, so older children would be better for him. Spencer will make an amazing family pup!
ROSCOE Roscoe is a one-year-old, 65 pound mixed breed. He is calm and laid back and very friendly. Roscoe loves the dog park! He likes most other dogs and is good with children. Roscoe is up to date on vaccines, neutered and micro chipped. He’s waiting for his forever family to take him home.
MADDIE Maddie is a sweet, gentle, and smart puppy who is eager to please and on her way to being housebroken. Maddie is food motivated and is learning tricks; she can give her paw and is working on “stay”. She is a fun, loving girl who gets along with other dogs and kids and loves to be by your side. Maddie walks well on a leash, is crate trained and sleeps through the night. She will make a wonderful addition to her lucky, forever family.
